Hi everyone, I'm having issues here. I just replaced my engine oil cooler, thermostat and radiator on my 2018 Jeep compass limited. I'm not having any engine issues. Oil does not have coolant or ar anything and after replacing all of that I'm finding my coolant is turning dark again like it did previously. Any have experience with this issue?

Ok this is slightly embarrassing but I figured Reddit has never steered me wrong. I can’t get the right blade size for rear wiper for my wife’s Kia listed above. All manuals say 12” blade and I’ve bought three different 12” blades with the same looking attachment and nothing fits. Someone please help.

2023.05.28 18:00 Mindandhand Help with a 2017 rear wiper blade
Ok, so I’ve rebuilt engines, replaced suspension systems, and have rewired cars but I cannot find a rear wiper blade that fits my (new to me) 2017 Niro. I’ve purchased 3 of them which have claimed to fit and have had to return all of them. Does anyone have a link to a known good rear wiper blade?

2023.05.28 06:00 InfernoAA God Made the World in Six Days, I’ll Perfect New Japan's on the Seventh Part Four: Ring o' Roses
In Part Three, Shingo Takagi confronted both his duties as World Heavyweight Champion and member of Los Ingobernables de Japon, proceeding to right the wrongs of his first reign by winning the January 4 main event against Tetsuya Naito to squash their beef and become co-leaders. With PAC shockingly joining the group after having gone on a crusade against them, they seemed stronger than ever, all except for Shingo's neck. Feeling the weight of CHAOS crushing it, it took both Kazuchika Okada and
Hiroshi Tanahashi to bring him to his knees, the Ace of the Universe back to his rightful spot after 5 years, restoring CHAOS’s purist regime. Ending off on keeping the riches from blood rival Katsuyori Shibata yet again, he now awaits the arrival of the 2024 New Japan Cup Winner...
New Japan Cup Finals (March 28, 2024)
“ZACK SABRE JR. HAS PAC IN HYPERNORMALISATION! PAC SUBMITS! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, FOR THE THIRD TIME IN HISTORY OUR NEW JAPAN CUP WINNER IS ZSJ!” After two failed attempts to translate his cup success into gold, the Bone Master has another chance to fulfil his career’s greatest goal. And out walks the man he beat in the 2018 Finals for his first win, the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, Hiroshi Tanahashi! One of Zack’s biggest rivals since coming to Japan, and one that’s had his number more time than he’s had theirs, he must beat the godly Ace of the Universe if he wishes to claim his first piece of IWGP-commissioned singles gold!
The stage set for Sakura Genesis, Sabre makes sure to rub in everyone’s faces the premonition he laid down at New Year’s Dash. He said to LIJ he’d be back for the title, and after beating one of their men, he’s made good on his claims. And now, he’s going to make ‘God’ bow to him, whether he wants to or not. When asked for his opinion on the challenger, Tanahashi says he’s amused by how earnestly the Windy Man’s tried to become a New Japan guy, moving his entire life to Japan in pursuit of the top prize. Whilst that dedication may be admirable, it’ll be for nought, Zack just another visitor to his grand kingdom, CHAOS remaining Sabre’s white whale at the end of every NJC journey.

Hiroshi Tanahashi (c) vs Zack Sabre Jr. XI - IWGP World Heavyweight Championship
They say third time’s the charm, but that remains to be seen in Sabre’s case. Sabre-Gun with mixed successes throughout the night, El Desperado coming up short whilst TMDK kept their gold, it’s up to their leader to set an example for his group. Popping his collar, he steels his gaze on the championship as Tanahashi makes his entrance, Zack blocking out the surrounding world. Despite channelling the controversial words of the polarising Okada for the past year, Hiroshi still has Ryogoku in the palm of his hands, remaining the people’s favourite no matter the shade of grey he envelops himself in. Back to his pomp and circumstance, he gives ZSJ the full show of what a true star looks like, ready to bring Sabre back down to reality.
It's a methodical opening from the two talented grapplers, Tanahashi standing toe-to-toe with the best technical wrestler in the world with merely his sheer aura. Sabre shoots for an early Article 50, but Tana sidesteps him into the ropes, before condescendingly patting him on the cheek! Zack retaliates with a forearm, knocking Tana to the mat, a deluge of stomps raining down on his face as the Hiroshi tries to cover up!
Escaping to the ropes, Sabre charges at him with a EUROPEAN UPPERCUT! Tana evades, connecting a DRAGON-STYLE HARITE, slapping respect into the challenger! Incensed, Sabre leaves a mark with a stinging slap of his own, before nailing a chain of Uppercuts! Tana fights back for a TWIST AND SHOUT, though Sabre counters with a FLATLINER! A High-Angle German is stuffed, Zack decked with an ALL OUT and a MIDDLE-ROPE SENTON BOMB! ONE! TWO! THR-KICK OUT!
Tana guns for the leg like he did Shibata, but a Feint Roundhouse into a Legsweep from ZSJ floors him! AND A NECK TWIST!!! With Hiroshi distracted by his neck, Sabre immediately switches for the legs, applying SUNDAY RAIL ENGINEERING WORKS REPLACEMENT BUS SERVICE!!! Tana’s quick to make the ropes, though has to physically pull himself to the apron when Sabre doesn’t release! No breather for him, Zack hooks his leg in the ropes and connects a DRAGON SCREW!
Tana receiving a taste of his own medicine, Sabre slides out and scores one directly on the apron, bashing Hiroshi’s leg into the hardest part of the ring! He attempts to Irish Whip Tanahashi into the ring post, but the Once in a Century Talent nails a SLING BLADE ON THE APRON! DRAGON SUPLEX TO THE FLOOR!!! Playing the starpower card, Tana poses with a grin as the cameras catch a shot of Sabre beneath him. He doesn’t notice Zack’s little twitches though, committing to a HIGH FLY FLOW TO THE OUTSIDE!!! A POSSUM SABRE PUSHES HIM MID-AIR ONTO THE BARRICADE!!!
As Tokyo gasps, it’s academic from Sabre as he threads Tana’s leg through a steel chair, PILMANISING IT!!! Evidence long discarded by the time the referee walks over, he wraps Hiroshi’s leg around the steel post, using it to apply a SASORI-GATAME!!! Tana lets out shouts of agony, Zack milking the suffering as Hiroshi begs the referee to get the challenger to stop. Eventually letting go, he forces Tanahashi to walk himself back into the spider’s web, a SPRINGBOARD ENZUIGIRI awaiting! BRIDGING NORTHERN LIGHTS SUPLEX! ONE! TWO! THR-KICK OUT!
Swivelling into a KNEEBAR now, he rolls around with Tana’s leg in his grasp, countering Hiroshi’s each attempts at escape, before going for the SELECTED TECHNICAL WORKS VOL. 2 combination, but Tana stacks his shoulders up! ONE! TWO! THR-NO LUCK! Forced to release to kick out, he scrambles to his feet to batter Hiroshi with a elbows, a DISCUS ELBOW SMASH staggering him, but a Pele Kick is caught, Tana nailing his own DRAGON SCREW!!!
A TWIST AND SHOUT follows, before Tana wraps on the DRAGON SWING! Wrenching on the neck, he makes a good few rotations before suddenly dropping to a knee, his leg unable to hold up for too long. Going for a DRAGON SUPLEX, it’s blocked by a barrage of back elbows, though Hiroshi nails the DARUMA-SHIKI GERMAN INSTEAD!!! ONE! TWO! THR-SABRE KICKS OUT! Nursing his neck, Sabre gets no reprieve as a HASE URANAGE spikes him, and a HIGH FLY ATTACK… IS CAUGHT IN AN ANKLE LOCK!!!
Tana rolls through but Sabre rolls with him, though he can’t get the grapevine, Tana booting him off with the other leg! TWIST AND SHOUT! Sabre subdued, a SLING BLADE takes him down, a HIGH FLY FLOW FOLLOWING SUIT!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Tana rushes for a TEXAS CLOVERLEAF, putting the hurt on Zack’s legs now! The Submission Master searches for escapes yet Hiroshi commits his everything to this move, not letting him free for the life of him! That is, until his own leg gives way! Grounded, he can’t stop a PENALTY KICK!!! AND A ZACK DRIVER!!! ONE! TWO! THR-TANA STAYS ALIVE!!!
Ragdolling Hiroshi with a pair of Double Underhook Suplexes, Zack puts Tana in a prone position to stomp the insides of the knees, before applying a CALF SLICER!!! Yet again, the Ace of the Universe is in trouble, his condition deteriorating with each submission. Knowing he needs to change that and fast… HE GRABS ZACK’S SKULL AND RAMS IT INTO THE MAT REPEATEDLY TO BREAK!!! Gears turning in his mind from Sabre’s tribute, HE GETS HIM UP FOR A STYLES CLASH!!! ONE! TWO! THR-SABRE SURVIVES!!!
Connecting a SLING BLADE, he dumps Zack with a DRAGON SUPLEX! ZACK RESPONDS WITH ONE OF HIS OWN! Open palm strikes from Tana light up Zack, only for him to wring out the arm for a PELE KICK!!! Sabre teases a Legsweep, but Hiroshi hops over this time and nails a GROUNDED HIGH FLY FLOW!!! Air driven out of ZSJ’s lungs, Tana hoists him up… AND NAILS A TOMBSTONE PILEDRIVER!!! SHADES OF OKADA!!! The CHAOS Leader beating him like this both past Sakura Geneses, it’s going to happen again!
Scaling the ropes, Tana crashes down with a HIGH FLY FLOWWWWWWWWWW!!! But he’s not done! Wanting to make an example out of Sabre, he takes his time posing atop the world like the star he is… BUT IT ALLOWS ZACK TO RECOVER, GRABBING HIS LEG!!! Hammering the knee before Tana has a chance to respond, he yanks him off… RUNNING LIGER BOMB!!! ONE! TWO! THR-KICK OUT!!! STRAIGHT INTO CLARKY CAT BAD BALLOON REMIX!!! Folding Tana’s leg over his shoulder, he utterly destroys the geriatric knees over the champion, who wails in agony, doing anything he can to break free… BUT HE’S TOO FAR FROM THE ROPES!!! TANAHASHI TAPS OUT!!! THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM – ZSJ’S THE NEW KING OF NEW JAPAN!!!
Zack Sabre Jr. def. Hiroshi Tanahashi (c) to win the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (30:23)
Cutting Tanahashi’s reign brutally short, Sabre-Gun has claimed its spot on the throne! Raising up both his trophy and championship, he’s lifted onto TMDK’s shoulders, the three men flaunting their gold to the world as the remainder of the stable joins them! Tana shell-shocked, he hangs his head in shame and despair as he limps off, Ryogoku the first of many dark days for NJPW…
As the new monarch, Sabre’s first order of business is simple – kill off his counterpart. And by that he means the man who successfully defended the title against him last year, Will Ospreay. Though he may hold the title, jealousy courses through ZSJ’s veins knowing the Commonwealth Kingpin’s considered the company’s top gaijin despite Zack’s superior record over him. Wanting to change that, he calls out Ospreay, who’s fresh off dropping the NEVER 6-Man Titles to Just6Guys, having had quite the identity crisis since having the WK main event taken from him. Eager at the chance at a do-over, he accepts without hesitation.
Wrestling Hinokuni (April 27, 2024)
Sabre-Gun (Zack Sabre Jr. & TMDK) vs United Empire (Will Ospreay & Aussie Open)
Whilst Sabre and Ospreay have kept their distance since their Royal Quest match, the same can’t be said about the greater stables. World Tag League Winners TMDK taking Aussie Open’s IWGP Tag Team Championship at Wrestle Kingdom and United Empire successfully defending the NEVER Titles against Sabre-Gun at the Anniversary Show, this conclusion was only inevitable. Aussie Open also wanting a chance to get their titles back, they team with Ospreay here against the champion unit, the Commonwealth Nations going to war for supremacy.
Unlike Royal Quest, Sabre’s notably a lot surer of himself against Will here, no longer compensating by matching his striking game, rather trying to make Ospreay play his game instead. However, even with Zack being in his best possible form, SG falters against UE once more, the Coriolis to Mikey Nicholls setting the stage for Wrestling Dontaku! Zack grits his teeth as much like Tanahashi, Ospreay looks down on him.

Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs Will Ospreay XVII - IWGP World Heavyweight Championship
A rivalry extending back an entire decade to the UK Indies, the spot for best British wrestler in the world has long been contested between these two. Back at it again, it’s time they settle the score once more. Ospreay strides out comfortably, having been in this position plenty of times by now as a potentially soon-to-be 3x World Champion, this his domain. As for Sabre, it’s his first time defending a title of this magnitude, pressure clearly weighing on his shoulders, but taking a deep breath, he prepares himself for victory just like TMDK earlier in the night.
As the bell rings… Ospreay explodes for a DROPKICK right away – shades of NJC 2021! Zack fishes the leg out the air and applies an ANKLE LOCK, LOOKING TO TAP HIM OUT WITHIN THE FIRST FEW SECONDS OF THE MATCH! Alarmed, Ospreay thrashes with kicks from his free leg to force Sabre off, rolling to the outside to recollect himself! Sabre doesn’t let him though, nailing a Baseball Slide Dropkick, before tossing him back in and wrangling the leg again!
A roll shakes him off, a HOOK KICK following, AND AN OSCUTTER! Sabre stops it though, countering with a SNAP DRAGON SUPLEX! Will rotates through to his feet and soars for a STANDING SHOOTING STAR PRESS, but again Zack dodges! BOW & ARROW ATTEMPT! Will flips into a cover, Zack kicking out instantly! Ospreay handsprings off the ropes, teasing his signature Enzuigiri, Sabre grasping the leg mid-air, but another follows, wrapping around his neck to twist through into a CROSS ARMBREAKER FROM WILL!
Sabre gets the monkey grip, preventing full extension, BUT WILL BITES THE FINGERS TO FORCE HIM OFF, now getting the full stretch, yelling at the referee to ask Zack if he submits! Sabre refuses however, rolling onto his stomach to turn the hold over and stand up, getting his legs around Will’s neck to score a NECK TWIST, getting him to release!
Zack knowing it to be a sore spot, he gets rallying with European Uppercuts to rock it like a bobblehead, before leaping into a GUILLOTINE CHOKE! Zack tightens his grip around Will’s neck, but a BUCKLE EXPLODER SUPLEX loosens it again as Sabre’s left dangling in a Tree of Woe! Ospreay sits cross-legged in front of him and SMASHES HIS NOSE WITH FOREARMS, busting a defenceless Zack open! Fish-hooking the nose, Will shakes his head about and lets crimson droplets paint the surroundings like a psychopathic Bob Ross, before letting go, cackling.
He heads to the top rope, but Zack meets him there, pulling himself up using his core strength and crotching Will on the neighbouring rope! The two face-to-face again, Zack sitting on the turnbuckle and Will on the rope, they trade forearms, blood continuing to leak down Sabre’s face, but he doesn’t care, INSTEAD GRABBING WILL’S LEG TO SUSPEND HIM UPSIDE-DOWN WITH A HANGING SUNDAY RAIL ENGINEERING WORKS REPLACEMENT BUS SERVICE!!!
Will’s in sheer agony as Sabre contorts his limb, but he’s saved by the referee’s count, Sabre forced to let go, Ospreay slumping to the apron. Zack turns to face the apron as he collects his wits and catches his breath, whilst Will nurses his leg, being checked on by the referee to make sure he’s good to continue, hopping to his base. Sabre settles down on the apron behind Will, grabbing him from behind, TESTING AN APRON TIGER SUPLEX!
Ospreay smashes the nose with a rear headbutt to ward him off! AND HE SPRINGS OFF ONE LEG TO DROP SABRE WITH AN APRON OSCUTTER, BOTH MEN SPILLING TO THE FLOOR!!! The referee starts their count as both lay still, no sign of movement as the 10 count nears. Reaching 12 now, they finally begin to stir, getting on all fours… 13… 14… 15… OSPREAY’S LEG GIVES OUT! 16… 17… 18… BOTH MEN MAKE ONE LAST PUSH, SABRE SHOVING HIMSELF INSIDE THE RING BY 19, WHILST OSPREAY PULLS HIMSELF UP ONTO THE APRON AND SPRINGS OFF ONE LEG ON THE ROPES FOR A PIP PIP CHEERIO!!! ONE! TWO! THR-KICK OUT!!!
Coming down hard on the leg though, Ospreay writhes in pain, but with Zack down, he pulls himself up with every last bit of energy he has up for STORM BREAKER… ZACK WITH AN OCTOPUS HOLD!!! Will immediately rams him into the turnbuckle until he lets up, Sabre instead sliding down his back like a bird hitting a window, OSPREAY COLLECTING HIM TO NAIL A HITODENASHI DRIVER!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOO!!!
Will shouts in frustration, having jammed the leg on the landing. Feeling victory nigh though, he preps the HIDDEN BLADE!!! SABRE SPINS AROUND AND COUNTERS WITH A ZACK DRIVER!!! ONE! TWO! THR-NO DICE!!! PENTALTY KICK! ANOTHER COVER!!! ONE! TWO! THR-STILL NO LUCK!!! NOW A NUMERO DOS A LA DESPERADO!!! Ospreay screams as Sabre tears the leg in half, Will dancing around in search of reprieve, until a FRANKENSTEINER stands ZSJ on his dome! BRAINBUSTER FOLLOWS!
Sabre rocked, Ospreay cracks the CHELSEA GRIN against his neck, before connecting the HIDDEN BLADE!!! ONE! TWO! THR-ZACK’S STILL IN IT!!! Will’s leg is falling apart as he stumbles back into the corner to try for seconds, losing balance and collapsing before he can reach his target! EUROPEAN CLUTCH FROM ZACK!!! ONE! TWO! THR-OSPREAY SURVIVES!!! BUT A PENALTY KICK TO THE SKULL! AND STRAIGHT INTO ORIENTEERING WITH NAPALM DEATH!!! OSPREAY THRASHES LIKE A MADMAN, FEELING HIS LIGAMENTS ON THE VERGE OF TEARING… AND HE TAPS!!!
Zack Sabre Jr. (c) def. Will Ospreay to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (34:18)
One more for the bad guys. Commonwealth Kingpin at his mercy, Ospreay a mess as he scrambles off, Zack’s the new Top Gaijin in town. Raising his title high from the turnbuckles, he juices every last drop out his victory, this moment perfect to him…
or not. OH MY GOD IT’S MINORU SUZUKI!!! Any bit of colour that remains on ZSJ’s pale face drains off as the King’s music rings through Fukuoka, but there’s no sign of the man- WAIT, SABRE’S SPUN AROUND! KICK TO THE GUT – GOTCH-STYLE PILEDRIVER!!! HE’S HERE!!! Placing a boot on Zack’s chest, Suzuki holds the World Title high over his former stablemate’s body!
The ending of Dontaku has Japan buzzing as they question the true motive of Suzuki’s attack, and after an extended silence, the King sets the record straight. 1 ½ years ago, Suzuki-Gun was dissolved, and ever since, Sabre’s been writing checks with his mouth that he can’t cash. He walks around with the World Title like
he’s the reason he even received recognition in NJPW in the first place. Suzuki gave him a home beside him, and as rapidly as he elevated Sabre, he can take it all away from him just as fast. He’s getting old and is still missing the final piece to the Japanese Triple Crown, so he plans to take that from Zack.
Sabre doesn’t take too kindly to these words, letting his actions speak for himself as he ASSAULTS SUZUKI on a Road To Dontaku show! Bringing Sabre-Gun with him, they brutalise the legend, before Zack plants his group’s flag on Suzuki’s chest! Mocking him for having no allies the next night, declaring Suzuki’s era of relevance to be long gone…
this plays. SUZUKI’S HERE, AND HE’S NOT ALONE! IT’S JUST6GUYS!!! Racing to the ring, the two factions erupt in a massive brawl, bodies flying left and right! Sabre tries for a quick getaway but he’s stopped by Minoru, who gives him a devilish snarl before clobbering him with forearms until Sabre-Gun’s sent packing through the crowd, Zack yelling expletives at Suzuki as he retreats!
Back to Yokohama Arena (May 16, 2024)
Sabre-Gun (Zack Sabre Jr., El Desperado & TMDK) vs Minoru Suzuki & Just3Guys (Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, DOUKI)
With Sabre-Gun and Just6Guys feuding ever since their respective formations, switching between silent competitive warfare of racking up belts to fighting each other, notably the Sabre/Taichi saga, it all fully comes to a head in Suzuki’s home of Yokohama! With full freedom to destroy each other however they please, the two factions don’t hold back one bit, with Suzuki especially targeting ZSJ. He’s unable to give him grief the way he wishes to though, Zack tactfully hiding behind his partners until he can blindside Minoru, before scramming again. Ultimately, it’s Minoru putting Desperado away with the GOTCH PILEDRIVER, before signalling to Sabre that time’s running out for him, Suzuki to get his hands on him too soon enough!
Minoru Suzuki & J6G def. Sabre-Gun (15:03)
As much as Sabre tries to deny it, that day only speeds closer with each accusation of cowardice against the prideful champion’s name, the world questioning whether he’s afraid of Suzuki. Adamant to silence his doubters, he finally accepts Suzuki’s title challenge, setting the stage for Dominion, though promising he won’t have a career to go back to when Sabre’s done with him!

With Sabre-Gun beating Just6Guys earlier in the night, this war’s already at its boiling point by the time the main event arrives, Suzuki opting to enter second as Zack steps out- CRACK! STEEL CHAIR TO SABRE’S SPINE!!! Suzuki isn’t wasting even a second here, tearing the jacket off Sabre’s back before bending the steel over his spine! The Windy Man desperately tries to crawl away to the ring, but Suzuki steps on his ankle to stop him! Turning him around to meet his maker, MINORU GOES FOR A GOTCH PILEDRIVER ON THE CHAIR!!! LOW BLOW FROM SABRE TO COUNTER!!!
Suzuki drops to his knees as Osaka boos the smarmy champion, ZSJ now battering the King’s back, before finally sliding him in to get the match started! PENALTY KICK RIGHT AWAY!!! ONE! TWO! THR-KICK OUT!!! Sabre wrenches in a CLARKY CAT, working the arm as Suzuki writhes under him, but it’s not long before Minoru stands up out of it, hurling ZSJ to the mat! Booting him in the jaw, Suzuki backs him into the corner and tears into him with open palm strikes! He winds up a CORNER DROPKICK, but Sabre evades, blasting him with a rapid barrage of European Uppercuts against the turnbuckle!
Zack taking the run-up now, Suzuki bucks him over the ropes to the apron, SABRE BLASTING A THUMB IN HIS EYE! Minoru blinded, Zack leaps up for a SPRINGBOARD ENZUIGIRI- SUZUKI BLOCKS WITH A WILD SLAP TO THE CHEEK!!! Sabre stiffed, Suzuki applies a HANGING JUJI-GATAME FROM THE ROPES!!! Zack screams in agony as Minoru damn near rips his arm out the socket, the referee’s count the only thing keeping him from going!
Releasing, Sabre crumples to the floor, getting as far as he possibly can from Suzuki, though he’s not fast enough, Suzuki nailing a GOAL KICK to his skull from the apron! Grabbing Sabre, he HURLS him into the guardrail with it shoulder-first, the velocity sending Zack through! As he goes to collect his prey though, SABRE TOSSES A CHAIR AT HIS SKULL!!! Threading Suzuki’s arm through it, SABRE STOMPS THE ELBOW!!! AND AN ARTICLE 50!!!
Sabre abuses the legend, but he forgets about the other arm, Suzuki slapping his head in with it until Zack releases! Shaking off the arm, a BACK BODY DROP sends Sabre crashing back to ringside, Minoru following after him as ZSJ slinks inside the ring. Zack beats him to his feet though, stomping a hole through the mat with Suzuki’s skull, dribbling it! He cracks a ROLLING ELBOW off the skull, but Minoru walks through it, glaring at Sabre! Throwing an elbow of his own, it gets caught, Zack scoring the PELE KICK to the arm!
AND A KIMURA LOCK!!! Sabre brutally rips at the arm, bringing Suzuki to his knees from the pain even, but Minoru pins his shoulders to the mat! ONE! TWO! THR-SABRE RELEASES TO KICK OUT! As Zack rolls to his feet, a SHOTGUN DROPKICK awaits him! Suzuki clobbers him with slaps to the face, Sabre seeing stars as one knocks him clean off his feet! Turning to the turnbuckle… SUZUKI RIPS IT OFF!!! Steel exposed, he teases a SNAP SUPLEX INTO THE CORNER!!! SABRE COUNTERS WITH A BRAINBUSTER ON THE MAT!!! GUILLOTINE CHOKE!!!
Draining the life out of Suzuki, Sabre presses on the carotid artery, Minoru is deep trouble! BUT NOW THE KING BITES ON ZSJ’S FINGERS!!! Zack yelps and releases, allowing Suzuki to secure his wrists and STOMP HIS HEAD IN!!! Sabre catches a boot and applies SUNDAY RAIL ENGINEERING WORKS REPLACEMENT BUS SERVICE!!! ZSJ tortures Suzuki’s leg, though in doing so leaves his arm exposed, Minoru yanking off his grip and countering into HIS OWN HEEL HOOK!!!
Sabre desperately tries the same counter, but Suzuki’s grip is too tight to break, forcing Zack to roll to the ropes! SUZUKI ISN’T LETTING GO! Crawling on his hands, Sabre pulls himself to the floor and WHIPLASHES MINORU’S NECK OFF THE BOTTOM ROPE!!! Staggering about ringside on one foot, he grabs his title and rolls back in! Suzuki struggling up, Sabre tries to deck him with the belt… but the referee grabs it from behind! A tug-of-war ends in SUZUKI KNOCKING THE BELT INTO THE REF WITH AN ENZUIGIRI!
Both men hitting the deck, Minoru rocks ZSJ with a Dropkick! GOTCH PILEDRIVER ONTO THE TITLE!!! But there’s no one to count! Pissed, Suzuki limps out and abuses a couple young lions, before picking one out the crowd to toss in the ring, ripping the referee’s shirt off and telling the lion to put it on! SUZUKI COVERS! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Even more livid, HE DECKS THIS LION TOO! Turning back to Zack, he notices the champion feebly reaching for the belt! Kicking it out the ring, Suzuki goes for another GOTCH PILEDRIVER!!! BACK BODY DROP COUNTER!!!
Still hurting, Sabre struggles to get a rally of strikes going, Suzuki meeting him blow for blow! BUT SABRE WHIPS THE SHOULDER INTO THE MAT! Minoru stunned, sadistic thoughts run through Sabre’s mind… TIGER SUPLEX INTO THE EXPOSED STEEL!!! AND A RUNNING LIGER BOMB – ONE OF SUZUKI’S RIVALS MOVES!!! THE REFEREE’S BACK TO CONSCIOUSNESS! NOT LIKE THIS! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Sabre’s exasperated, thinking he had it! Running out of options, he teases a ZACK DRIVER, but Suzuki slips behind and applies the SLEEPER HOLD!!! Sabre’s quickly fading, frantically trying to tear the bad arm off, but Minoru doesn’t budge, shoving ZSJ to the mat for the PENALTY KICK!!! ONE! TWO! THR-ZACK KICKS OUT!!! Suzuki grabs Sabre by the chin, demanding him to strike Minoru if he thinks he’s so tough, ZSJ doing his best, but Suzuki eats it and returns a HARD SLAP! SLEEPER SUPLEX!!!
Tossing Sabre to the apron, Minoru steps onto the middle rope and cinches in an ELEVATED SLEEPER!!! Zack dangles in the air, unable to find his footing to escape, Suzuki lifting him higher and higher! Blood rushing to his legs, he needs to act fast, attacking the elbow again until the hold is finally slightly loosened! Leaning forwards, he pulls Suzuki his direction, allowing him to lower his feet onto the apron… YANKING SUZUKI INTO AN APRON ZACK DRIVER!!!
Sabre coughs up a lung as he kicks Minoru’s corpse back in, before lining up a PENALTY KICK!!! ONE! TWO! THR-SUZUKI’S ALIVE!!! Zack’s stunned as he comes face-to-face with Suzuki’s sneer, Minoru still having enough in him to throw slaps! Sabre returning Uppercuts, they go blow-for-blow until Zack collapses first, though he’s playing possum, HEADBUTTING THE SHOULDER as the King tries to grab him! He goes for YOU CAN’T PLAY CONKERS IN ENGLAND, though he’s immediately tossed down, SUZUKI NAILING A PENALTY KICK!!!
Winding up, Minoru goes for one more… ZACK SLAPS HIS HEAD OFF HIS SHOULDERS!!! Putting the head between his legs, HE NAILS A GOTCH PILEDRIVER!!! Suzuki collapses in position for a PENALTY KICK!!! AND NOW SABRE CINCHES IT IN – HURRAH! ANOTHER YEAR, SURELY THIS ONE WILL BE BETTER THAN THE LAST; THE INEXORABLE MARCH OF PROGRESS WILL LEAD US ALL TO HAPPINESS!!! Suzuki grits his teeth, trying to fight through it, Sabre keeping his eyes on his hands to see the tap… NOWHERE TO GO, MINORU FLIPS HIM OFF WITH BOTH HANDS AND VERBALLY SUBMITS!!!
Zack Sabre Jr. (c) def. Minoru Suzuki to retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship (32:50)
Surviving one of the toughest matches of his career, Zack’s kingdom still lives, though barely. As he’s handed his title though, he chucks it aside, this about far more than the gold to him! SABRE STOMPS OUT SUZUKI!!! Signalling to the back, out rush Sabre-Gun, coming to Sabre’s aid to conduct a mugging on the legend! SUDDEN DEATH FROM ELP! PINCHE LOCO FROM DESPERADO! THUNDER VALLEY FROM TMDK! TANDEM JEEP FLIP/DROPKICK FROM BLAKE, CONNORS AND FUJITA! And now, it's Zack’s turn. Dragging him to the concrete… HE’S GOING FOR THE GOTCH PILEDRIVER!!! HE WANTS TO RETIRE SUZUKI FOR GOOD!!!
BUT HERE COMES J6G!!! AND LANCE ARCHER TOO!!! Sabre tosses Suzuki aside to deal with the oncoming traffic, Taichi and co. putting up an honourable fight, but they’re still down a man, Sabre-Gun managing to retain their upper-hand,
until… OH MY GOD, IT’S SUZUKI’S OLD TAG PARTNER NAOMICHI MARUFUJI!!! Sabre can’t even get a curse out before a KO-OH SMACKS HIM IN THE FACE!!! Marufuji beats on Zack to turn the tide, going for the POLE SHIFT, but Sabre manages to escape in the nick of time, Sabre-Gun once again sent on the retreat, the show closing on Marufuji helping Suzuki up!
NJPW/AJPW/NOAH All Together Again (June 7, 2024)
Zack Sabre Jr. vs Naomichi Marufuji
After the events of Dominion, it’s only natural these two fight, long, long overdue a one-on-one since their NOAH days together! Fighting in Suzuki’s honour, Marufuji steps to the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion and it’s like 2016 all over again the way he utterly humbles Sabre to start like he’s facing Okada! A match of two halves, it goes from Naomichi giving ZSJ the biggest whooping of his life to Sabre brutally breaking down the legend, reminding him he’s 8 years too old to still be winning these sorts of matches. Though Maru gives Zack grief one more than one occasion, he meets his demise at the hands of a CREMATION LILY, Sabre spitting on Naomichi as he leaves, declaring himself untouchable!
Zack Sabre Jr. def. Naomichi Marufuji (25:37)
With his war on J6G and friends officially behind him, Sabre sets his sights on a show he has quite some history with. Losing to Claudio Castagnoli at the first Forbidden Door, before beating Katsuyori Shibata at the second to take both the NJPW TV and ROH Pure Titles to ALL IN to submit Danielson, there’s naturally only one direction for him to head…
Dynamite (June 12, 2024)
Racking another AEW International Championship defence under his belt, Wheeler YUTA is on top of the world, and as he’s approached by Tony Schiavone for a post-match comment… WHACK! IWGP WORLD TITLE TO THE BACK OF HIS HEAD!!! SABRE-GUN’S HERE!!! Mugging Blackpool Combat Club’s young gun like they did Suzuki, a SABRE DRIVER leaves him broken on the mat as Zack yells down the camera that he wants Moxley’s head at Forbidden Door, scurrying away before BCC can make the save!
Collision (June 15, 2024)
Zack Sabre Jr. vs Wheeler YUTA
Off the back of Sabre’s assault on YUTA, a match is made between the two technically-gifted champions in a massive Collision main event! Though ZSJ’s far out his paygrade, an arrogant Wheeler does his best to knock off the Technical Wizard, impressing with a display of submissions he’s picked up from Danielson, before employing some of Claudio’s marquee athleticism and Mox’s grittiness. Never a fair match to begin with though, a TESCO MEAL DEAL cruelly silences YUTA!
Zack Sabre Jr. def. Wheeler YUTA (10:12)
Grabbing a mic, Zack runs down Moxley, reminding him how they were supposed to fight 4 years ago until the pandemic ruined that, Jon ducking him ever since. Now though, he’s the last member of BCC he needs to get through before he can shut up those babies too, so all he needs to know is if Jon is still afraid of him or not. And as Sabre awaits his response… HE RECEIVES IT IN THE FORM OF A PARADIGM SHIFT!!! Mox holds Zack’s title over his body, gaining some retribution for YUTA!
AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door (June 23, 2024)
Also on the show:
The Lucha Brothers (c) vs La Faccion Ingobernable (RUSH & Dralistico) - IWGP Tag Team Championship PAC (c) vs Swerve Strickland - IWGP United States Championship Tetsuya Naito vs Andrade El Idolo
Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs Jon Moxley - IWGP World Heavyweight Championship
The final showdown of a lengthy saga, Sabre makes his third defence against New Japan’s Ace, and it’s quite literally a bloody clinic, Mox showing zero fear in the face of the Top Gaijin, who looks to plant his flag over another territory. From a Paradigm Shift to the floor to a Zack Driver through a table, both men are busted open by the surroundings, the blood loss only helping Sabre’s case when he locks in the HYPERNORMALISATION, causing Mox to pass out! Alas, ZSJ stands atop BCC, but perhaps a more personal challenge yet awaits him…

2023.05.27 17:03 Negative-Pen-8504 Windscreen Wipers
I’m on the brink of purchasing yet another set of windscreen wiper blades for my 2018 VW Polo, as both the front and back wipers make a horrible scraping / squeaking sound and don’t effectively clear the windscreen. They were only replaced a few months ago for the same reasons.
I don’t buy cheap wiper blades either. My most recent set were expensive Bosch ones. However they only worked perfectly for a month or two.
I travel around 6,000 miles a year - so below average. And most of the time it isn’t even raining so don’t use them too often. Just to clarify, I do not have my wipers on when my windscreen is dry.
Is it normal to go through so many sets of windscreen wipers in such a short space of time? How often do you have to change your wiper blades? Can you think of an underlying issue?
Do you have any recommendations for high quality, long lasting wiper blades?

2023.05.27 04:48 mostreliablebottle If Best Picture was decided by Critics Polls (1940-2021)
Roughly 7 years ago
u/TheGreatZiegfeld did an experiment of a post to determine what the best films of each year would be from 1940 to 2011 (before the 2012 S&S polls).
With the recently updated TSPDT and the 2022 S&S list, I decided to do the same from 1940 to 2021 regarding what critics thought were the best of each year.
Keep in mind this is all from a critics' poll, not from one specific critic's list. Also no short films or miniseries (meaning no Twin Peaks or Meshes of the Afternoon), as well as those from 2022 and beyond because of the last S&S poll.

We created a
quick reference including character summaries and some plot reminders to help you along.
Maps
With narrow exceptions, Toll the Hounds takes place on
Genabackis.
Darujhistan itself is absolutely central, though we will also visit the new Andii home in
Black Coral, wander
the territory of the former Pannion Domin, and follow the route Tool, Toc, etc. took across
the Lamatath Plain. There is also one location, the Reach of Woe, that hasn't been pinned down on any world map and may or may not be on Genebackis at all.
Summaries
It's about 18 hours later than I'd intended, but let's wrap this thing out.
Chapter 22
Des'Ban of Nemil gives us an epigraph about, to be trite, living in the moment. You can no more fight your past than rail against your future and must deal with yourself in the now. While the attribution makes this about soldiers, it would seem to address one character's motivations above all others. But that's getting well ahead of ourselves.
Samar rides behind Karsa on Havok, following Traveller towards Darujhistan. The closer they get the more clear it becomes that the city is under extreme duress. As is Traveller, who seems drawn, perhaps even compelled, to march on.
Eventually even Havok can't take the tension and Karsa lets him run free. The Toblakai plans to follow Traveller, to guard his back. Samar reluctantly agrees to join him. The ancient bear god is still trailing them as well. They set out on the last leg of their journey. Samar makes explicit something that has already bothered several characters: the moon is missing.
Kallor is also on his final approach. He ponders convergence as he walks. As an immortal human, he has a broader view of the phenomenon than his kin:
But Kallor understood that the events they described and pored over after the fact were but concentrated expressions of something far vaster. Entire ages converged, in chaos and tumult, in the anarchy of Nature itself. And more often than not, very few comprehended the disaster erupting all around them. No, they simply went on day after day with their pathetic tasks, eyes to the ground, pretending that everything was just fine.
And apparently I'm going to quote Kallor at length since his own take on compassion is worth at least considering:
Compassion is not a replacement for stupidity. Tearful concern cannot stand in the stead of cold recognition. Sympathy does not cancel out the hard facts of brutal, unwavering observation. It was too easy, too cheap, to fret and wring one’s hands, moaning with heartfelt empathy – it was damned self-indulgent, in fact, providing the perfect excuse for doing precisely nothing while assuming a pious pose.
The High King comes to a crossroads where torches light each approach and knows something is wrong. Spinnock Durav greets him and tells him he cannot go to Darujhistan.
Kallor is incandescent with rage, not at being waylaid, but at Spinnock's hopeless stand in Rake's name. He doesn't want to kill Spinnock, but he knows that's where the night is heading. In fact, he likes Spinnock and has nothing against any of the Andii. He even regrets killing Whiskeyjack:
‘Did you think it was my intention to murder Whiskeyjack? Do you think I just cut down honourable men and loyal soldiers out of spite? You weren’t even there! It was Silverfox who needed to die, and that is a failure we shall all one day come to rue. Mark my words. Ah, gods, Spinnock. _They got in my way, damn you! Just as you’re doing now!_’
....
‘Does it occur, to any of you, what these things do to me? No, of course not. The High King is cursed to fail, but never to fall. The High King is but…what? Oh, the physical manifestation of ambition. Walking proof of its inevitable price. Fine.’ He readied his two-handed weapon. ‘Fuck you, too.’
And so they begin their fight.
Across the bay from Coral, Clip has found enough remnants of Kurald Galain to open a gate to the city. Nimander waits, feeling exhausted by the ordeal of hiding his intentions, by the need to wait and plan without saying anything to anyone. Clip is winning this exchange and Nimander feels trapped. He has to trust that he will know the time to act and that his companions will follow his lead.[1]
Suddenly, Clip succeeds and darts into his gate. Nenanda is the first to follow and gets stabbed for his trouble. Clip taunts Nimander over his fallen kin. The god inside him can't allow the other Andii to follow too closely. It knows that they know and will try to stop it.
Nimander is trapped in utter darkness as Clip's laughter recedes. He can't see or hear anyone else, but suddenly Phaed's long-quiescent voice appears. She calls him pathetic and taunts him, but she does help, urging Nimander to reach deep inside himself for the blood of dragons.
Out of nowhere -- everything around him is nowhere, so that's not a shock -- Aranatha appears. She pulls Nimander forward into the darkness.
In the spiritual world, Salind prepares to attack the Redeemer, to bring him perfect faith.[2] Her body is in Gradithan's hut, overflowing with saemankelyk. Monkrat looks on, disgusted. Gradithan also has a Kadaspala moment[3] as he pours more saemankelyk into he mouth:
‘Time,’ he muttered, ‘and time, time, time, the time. Is now.’
Monkrat watches and reflects on the nature of belief and... I'm just going to quote a lot this time around (emphasis mine for a change):
Everyone needed a god. Slapped together and shaped with frantic hands, a thing of clay and sticks. Built up of wants and all those unanswerable questions that plagued the mortal soul. Neuroses carved in stone. Malign obsessions given a hard, judgemental face – he had seen them, all the variations, in city after city, on the long campaigns of the Malazan Empire. They lined the friezes in temples; they leered down from balustrades. Ten thousand gods, one for every damned mood, it seemed. A pantheon of exaggerated flaws.[4]
Monkrat slips out and Spindle tells him they have to get the children out of the camp. Monkrat is aghast; he didn't mean to actually commit to help. Spindle absolutely insists and refers back to their time in the army. We get a slightly-too-on-the-nose argument from Dassem back when he was First Sword:
‘Do what’s right,’ Dassem told us. Gods, even after all this time he still remembered the First Sword’s words. ‘That’s a higher law than the command of any officer. Higher even than the Emperor’s own words. You are in a damned uniform but that’s not a licence to deliver terror to everyone – just the enemy soldier you happen to be facing. Do what is right, for that armour you wear doesn’t just protect your flesh and bone. It defends honour. It defends integrity. It defends justice. Soldiers, heed me well. That armour defends humanity. And when I look upon my soldiers, when I see these uniforms, I see compassion and truth. The moment those virtues fail, then the gods help you, for no armour is strong enough to save you.’[5]
Monkrat agrees to help Spindle (and we get the first of several instances of Spindle mangling Gradithan's name). He leads Spindle to where the children hide from the rain.
Inside the barrow, Segda Travos watches Itkovian grapple with the situation. The Redeemer concludes that the Dying God might need his help. Segda is shocked.
Salind is growing arms, readying her attack. Itkovian tells Seerdomin to find Salind deep inside the apparition. Segda should fight not for Itkovian but for Spinnock. Segda sobs, but he agrees to try. For his friend, not for a god he doesn't believe is worth saving.
Picker, meanwhile, is falling through a different spiritual space.[6] As she senses the ground approaching she wills herself upright and slows, landing on bedrock littered with bones and snail shells. It smells like the den of a predator.
She finds a series of gourds, each filled with blood. She sees a drawing on the wall of a carriage. But the drawing is moving, the carriage approaching. She just stares.
In Black Coral, Endest Silann prepares to defend his people. He wonders if it's worth it, thinking back on the destruction of the forests of Kharkanas and the search for someone to blame. Mother Dark turned away and left them to the fates they created leaving only her people to blame themselves. The people, the Tiste Andii, did not rise to the occasion; they ducked.
Except for Anomander Rake. He did what no one else did and stood tall:
Is his own burden not enough? Why must he carry ours? Why have we done this to him? Why, because it’s easier that way, and we so cherish the easy paths, do we not? The least of effort defines our virtues. Trouble us not, for we dislike being troubled.
The children are hungry. The forests are dead, the rivers poisoned. Calamity descends again and again. Diseases flower like mushrooms on corpses. And soon we will war over what’s left. As we did in Kharkanas.
He will take this burden, but what does that mean? That we are freed to stay unchanging? Freed to continue doing nothing?
And yes, this is how Endest Silann prepares. He's a dour one.
Silanah still watches, ready to intervene, but Endest is the last non-nuclear option. He waits.
Traveller is still plodding towards Darujhistan, Karsa and Samar Dev in tow. Samar can barely stay upright, overwhelmed by the pressure (presumably Hood's arrival plus Dragnipur unveiled) emanating from the city. Karsa urges her to concentrate and build walls in her mind so they can continue. The pressure is less when Karsa stands between her and the city but it's not enough.
She manages her walls and they continue. A mob of people clamors out of the city. Samar turns around to see the bear god framed by a rising shattered moon, which now casts bright light over the city. They continue on.
Chillbais observes Traveller's arrival and wings off to Baruk. He wants nothing to do with the entire situation.
Inside the gates, Karsa and Samar watch from a distance as Cotillion, flanked by Hounds, approaches Traveller. They exchange words. Karsa holds the witch back from hearing; the words are not for them (and, Samar admits, she couldn't keep her mouth shut if she could hear).
Whatever Cotillion has to say hits Traveller and he winces but he makes some kind of choice. He cries out and Cotillion steps aside. As Traveller moves on, Cotillion clearly feels the weight of the exchange. The Rope disappears and his Hounds wander off.
Samar and Karsa continue to follow Traveller as she realizes that they are approaching the nexus of power in the city.
Inside Dragnipur, Ditch speaks with the newly-born god, who is railing at the injustice of its existence. But everything is born to die, as Ditch offers. Ditch isn't impressed; the godling isn't much more than a miniature Kadaspala.[7]
Pearl is making peace as it softly weeps and awaits its destruction. It doesn't hate Tayschrenn, who bound it, or Quick Ben, who unleashed it against impossible odds, or Anomander Rake, who bound it to Dragnipur.
Draconus appears and apologizes to Pearl for making Dragnipur in the first place. Pearl says it is sorry to see the end of so many enemies working together, forced to join hands. Draconus is speechless.
Meanwhile, Apsal'ara makes her way towards the gate under the wagon. A pattern is steaming out of the gate. She steels herself and throws her chain into the unfathomable cold.[8]
Draconus leaves Pearl. He knows that Kadaspala's godling was a failure. It was a desperate gambit anyhow; what they really needed was for Rake to kill a few powerful entities to keep the wagon in motion. But Draconus also forgives Rake, though perhaps for the wrong reasons as he sees Rake's refusal as a sort of nihilism.
Suddenly, and with overwhelming force, Hood arrives. Draconus rapidly reconsiders his forgiveness of Rake. Hood's arrival pushes back Chaos, but it's not enough.
Draconus confronts Hood, but Hood hasn't arrived alone. The legions of the dead follow him into Dragnipur.
Draconus still can't get his head around Hood's arrival. What will happen to the dead without Hood?
‘So who will claim the dead?’
‘Let the gods see to their own.’
The coldness of that response staggered Draconus. ‘And what of those who worship no gods?’
‘Yes, what of them?’
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’
‘After this,’ Hood said, still studying the wagon, ‘the dead will not be my concern. Ever again.’[9]
The dead assemble before Hood and Draconus. The Second is cantankerous as usual, but Hood tells the Seguleh that he will not lead the dead into battle. For him, there is another task.
Iskar Jarak -- yes, Whiskeyjack, in case the chapter 14 epigraph wasn't enough to drive that home -- will lead the dead. Around him, the Grey Swords, Wickans, and fallen Seguleh will reinforce the core. Beyond that, the army of the dead isn't much to brag about. Hood orders the wagon to turn around to face the forces of Chaos.
Chapter 23
Fisher gives us a brief meditation on death, which certainly fits, as the ox finds himself trying to avoid just that. The city stinks of blood and echoes with screams and the poor beast isn't having it, careening through streets and alleys.
It's not alone, either. Everyone is running around, trying to flee the Hounds. Or at least everyone who doesn't know what's happening; Iskaral Pust is preparing to ride out on his trusty mule, surrounded by his hoard of bhokarala and swarmed by spiders.[10]
Across the city, Baran ambushes Pallid, throwing the Hound of Light into a fortified building surrounded by (now dead) guards: the city jail. They crash into Barathol's cell, releasing him but bringing the ceiling down on one leg. Pallid prepares to attack the human when someone charges into it: Chaur.
Chaur throws Barathol his axe and collects a giant rock. Barathol can see where this is going and desperately scrambles free, tearing his leg. Chaur's throw hits Pallid, but the Hound throws him into a wall. Baran returns and drives Pallid off in time for Barathol to scramble out and find Chaur unmoving but still alive.
Antsy, also freed from the jail's destruction, finds them. The Bridgeburner isn't optimistic; Chaur is bleeding into his brain. Barathol is determined to find a healer even if it means carrying Chaur, but just then the ox and his cart arrive. The beast is more than happy to resume a set role, carrying a body as a man guides them somewhere.
Rallick and Torvald watch the city from Vorcan's roof.[11] Studlock drags the unconscious Seguleh guards to the courtyard and starts ministering healing. Tor is consciously avoiding looking at, or even thinking about, the shattered moon. Rallick leaves with Vorcan to join Baruk.
Scorch and Leff are still patrolling the streets and alleys around the compound looking for a Hound to kill. They may have proven competent, but they're still not smart. Leff wants teeth to make a necklace and a paw as... a club? It's not clear. Scorch wants a skull with which to make a boat.
A Hound of Shadow appears and the pair trains crossbows on it. The Hound decides it has better things to do and disappears.
‘Next time,’ muttered Leff. ‘We shoot first and argue later.’
‘Good idea. Next time. We’ll do it right the next time.’
Somehow these two live.
Cutter rides from the docks into the city carrying the metal lance. The Hounds make him think of Apsalar, of the night she left and the morning he found out. He believes that she made him into what he is, into the man who could match blades with Rallick Nom.[12]
He knows the Hounds and supposes they won't attack him, but he hates the destruction they bring to his city. He blames Shadowthrone or Cotillion, which... yeah, that checks out.
Cutter resolves, not for bad reasons, to leave in the morning after telling Challice he killed Gorlas:
Cutter knew now that he had – since her – taken into his arms two women as if they were capable of punishing him, each in turn. Only one had succeeded, and he rode towards her now, to stand before her and tell her that he had murdered her husband. Not because she had asked him to, because, in truth, she did not have that sort of hold over him, and never would.
But that won't end up happening. Challice, snow globe in hand, ponders her life from the top of the abandoned tower. She knows the globe for what it is:
She looked down once more at the imprisoned moon cupped in her hands. And here, she realized, was her childhood in all its innocence. Frozen, timeless, and for ever beyond her reach. She need only let her gaze sink in, to find all that she had once been. Cursed with beauty, blessed with health and vigour, the glow of promise—
She jumps, finally free. She and the globe shatter on the ground.[13]
Kruppe leaves the Phoenix Inn and saddles his mule as it lashes out at him. He rides out into the city to provide "a blunt barrier" after offering commentary on Rake and his moment of vulnerability:
What sort of man is this? This white-maned Tiste Andii whose hands remain stained with a brother’s blood, a people’s vast loss?
Ah, but look closely. The core burns still, hot and pure, and it gathers unto itself, bound by indomitable will. He will take the wounds of the heart, for Anomander Rake is the sort of man who sees no other choice, who accepts no other choice.
Still. For now, grant him a few more moments of peace.
"No struggle to vast, no odds too overwhelming," etc. The sense of impending doom is palpable.
Antsy leads the ox to Baruk's estate and pulls the cord. The High Alchemist is indeed home, but he's on his way out and can't heal Chaur. Barathol is crushed, but Antsy gets one more idea. They head further into the Estates District.
Chaur, meanwhile, is dying. We get a touching look inside his mind as a series of disconnected sparks slowly being extinguished. But in that extremity, the sparks find something new: mutual recognition.
Barathol weeps as they arrive behind Coll's estate. Antsy stops to pick something up off the street and they continue on to the Finnest House. They carry Chaur to the door and Raest answers. He's happily ensconced in his prison, oblivious to the night around him. He does note that earlier in the night a T'lan Imass came to visit but the House took him (and yes, that's Dev'ad Anan Tol, Harrlo's friend from so many chapters ago it feels like a different book).
Raest is disinclined to help since Antsy has already reneged on their last bargain; Raest still wants his dead cat. Luckily, that's exactly what Antsy paused to pick up. Raest acquiesces and names the cat Tufty.[14]
They get Chaur inside the Azath and he stops dying. His mind sets off on a journey of self-discovery.
Spite and Envy stop in the middle of trying to destroy one another. They sense Dragnipur and both want it, the sword that is their father's legacy. Together, Anomander can't oppose them, weakened as he his. They set out to kill Rake (all while plotting against each other; Eleint sisters apparently just do that).
For once, Karsa's stubborn certainty has shaken. He and Samar follow Traveller at some distance. They are there to witness, not to interfere.
Traveller comes before Rake. Traveller -- Dassem, as Rake addresses him -- can sense Hood close, but Rake won't stand aside to let the First Sword fulfill his vengeance.[15] The cult of Dessembrae emerges to witness their god and Great Ravens alight on every building.
Stricken with grief, Dassem Ultor attacks. Karsa is struck absolutely numb; he finally found warriors he's not sure he can oppose.
Suddenly, the fight is over. Even Samar can tell something went wrong. Dragnipur ended up embedded in Rake's face, killing him. Dassem screams in anguish and the Ravens take flight. Karsa knows Rake cheated, that he chose to be killed and sorely used Dassem.
All over the city, forces can sense Rake's death and Dragnipur's... availability. Light streams in. The rest of the Hounds of Light join Pallid and Lock, ten in total. They are here for the sword of perfect justice. Overhead, Tulas Shorn is less than pleased.
Pust and his menagerie ride -- slowly -- towards the sword he plans to claim in his own name. He somehow stares down three Hounds of Light, but eventually he meets his match: Kruppe himself.
There's no way I'm summarizing this. They clash, Kruppe escapes, the end. It's a fun passage but you should reread it if you want a blow by blow.
Forces converge on Rake's corpse. Spite and Envy emerge and the Hounds of Shadow prowl towards them. Baruk sets out in his carriage, weeping. He has lost a friend and the world has lost a power for good.
Cutter rides in. He sees Rake's corpse and has an entirely reasonable response: "We are in trouble." Samar tells him that Dassem Ultor killed Rake and Cutter doesn't put things together until she mentions the name Traveller.
Karsa urges Cutter to help defend Rake's body. He also wants Samar to get Dassem on his feet for the defense. And again, this is Karsa Orlong deciding he's not enough.
Karsa introduces himself and Cutter answers:
The giant glanced at him. ‘Yes,’ he said with a sharp nod. ‘I am Karsa Orlong of the Teblor. Toblakai. And you?’
‘Crokus. Crokus Younghand.’ He hesitated, then said, ‘I was once a thief.’
‘Be one again,’ said Karsa, teeth bared, ‘and steal me a Hound’s life this night.’
Shit. ‘I’ll try.’
‘That will do,’ the Toblakai replied.[16]
The Hounds of Light charge just as a gate opens and someone takes Crokus's lance.
Spinnock is losing. Kallor has hammered him with blows and his armor is coming apart. He lost his helmet and still Kallor keeps coming. All he can do is block and dodge, but finally his sword shatters. Kallor catches him across the chest, throwing the Andii to the ground. Spinnock smiles up at the High King.
‘What,’ Kallor asked softly, ‘was the point, Spinnock Durav?’
But the fallen warrior did not answer.
‘You could never win. You could never do anything but die here. Tell me, damn you, _what was the fucking point?_’
Kallor tells Spinnock that Rake doesn't deserve him. Spinnock apologizes to Kallor, offers him condolences for how driven he is, how blinded he is, how irredeemable he is in the eyes of the world. Kallor damn near loses it but calms down. Spinnock did what he came to do: not hurt Kallor, but delay him, prevent him from reaching Darujhistan in time.
Kallor realizes that Rake is dead. He understands the plan and chooses to let Spinnock bleed out peacefully.
As Kallor walks off, Crone and her kin descend along with two dragons. One, Orfantal, follows Kallor and scoops him up. The other, Korlat, helps Crone tend to Spinnock's wounds. They go to leave and Spinnock leaves his broken sword behind.
But Kallor isn't quite done yet. He manages to pull loose his sword and put it in the dragon's neck. They fall to the ground and Orfantal sembles, bleeding from a deep wound, and falls to the ground.[17]
Notes
[1]: Again, contrast how Nimander thinks of himself here and how everyone else sees him. He's worn down and he dwells in failure. Meanwhile, his kin will follow him into death if need be.
[2]: Note that this is (ambiguously) a Kruppe interlude. In Black Coral. The very structure of the book is breaking down.
[3]: I don't think there's anything more than thematic connection to read into this, but it is interesting that we now have a third character adopting madness coding in the exact same speech pattern.
[4]: This dichotomy of questions and answers continues to play out. It's another case where I don't know how deliberate Erikson was but it's clearly central to the exploration of faith around which this plot pivots.
[5]: tGiNW: Anyone who thinks the marines' response to Teblor refugees was out of character should come back to this passage. Is it, like I said, too direct for my taste? Sure. Is it consistent? Absolutely.
[6]: DoD: Interestingly, we get Picker reflecting on the eyes of a dying goat here. Her thoughts, while not as detailed, track somewhat with Deadsmell's observations from DoD 9. Just in much less detail. But I get ahead of myself; I'll probably end up spending an entire summary just on that passage.
[7]: Kadaspala count: four.
[8]: There's a somewhat interesting thermodynamic aside here. The way Darkness is portrayed here is the manifestation of absence of all energy, a zone of absolute zero temperature. Opposing this with Chaos -- entropy -- is an odd concept given our understanding of thermodynamics.
[9]: And with that we get the first hint of Hood's purpose here.
[10]: We'll just leave off the fact that he apparently managed to woo Sordiko Qualm.
[11]: It's quite sweet how much they both clearly like Tiserra, each in their own way.
[12]: He's painfully close here, but still very wrong. He'll get there.
[13]: I've had my say on Challice elsewhere. She's both awful and profoundly tragic at the same time. She didn't deserve to be punished with Gorlas, but she and Cutter weren't badly matched here, both searching for identities and feelings of freedom that were never coming back to them.
[14]: The cat will always be Tufty to me. I know the name apparently shifts to Fluffy in OST, but Tufty is still canon.
[15]: I'd be utterly remiss not to bring up Dassem's sword here. Andarist told Cutter it was named both Vengeance and Grief; Dassem seems to hold both simultaneously. Oh, and as will be pointed out shortly: it's Rake's sword. The two men really do understand one another on absolutely tragic levels.
[16]: And so Crokus finally reclaims himself. He's not Cutter, he's not someone that Apsalar made in her image, he's not Murillio, and he's not Challice's toy. Unlike Challice, he finds a way to balance being himself ("Crokus. Crokus Younghand") while still allowing himself to change ("I was once a thief"). I don't entirely like Crokus, but this moment always gets me. He has found a way to live in the world as it is.
[17]: tKT: I want Orfantal to end up in the coyote from chapter 21 but I'm increasingly convinced he's dead.

| Been looking for a DCSB Tacoma for a bit. 4x4 preferred. Came across one in Dallas, I live in Houston, for a decent price with everything I would like to have. They dropped the price and while texting with the sales man he drops they have a service performed withe each vehicle. Told him to provide me all of the details for each line and got nothing back. I shouldn’t be surprised. Told him I wouldn’t pay over the advertised priced. submitted by Dlargo1 to ToyotaTacoma [link] [comments] |

Considering buying one of these. Reliability issues look not so great. If you can provide any professional advice on how these cars are, I'd appreciate it.
I can fix most things on cars myself. My wheelhouse is 70's British cars I.e. MG, Triumph.. I'm not afraid to tackle most things on new cars.
Is there anything bad about these that would result in catastrophic failure without warning?

2023.05.25 22:35 EpicErsatz New Jeep Owner, stereo question.
Hey all,
Long story short I just got a 2018 Jeep Compass Sport 2wd because my previous vehicles engine blew and wanted to lower my payment anyway so got a base model compass. It has the 5inch screen I think without carplay, only has bluetooth. I wanted to install a bigger aftermarket stereo on it. I know i will need to get a new dash trim for it but I had read something about having the flash the computer or something. Can I just get an aftermarket stereo and install or is there something special i need to do? What's the biggest screen size I can get and put in, 7inch?

| After two years it finally happened. Can’t be happier. AD came through. As much as I want to shit on the experience, it was 100% worth it. Seeing the reps excited for me was pretty damn cool too. Daughter got to see the whole experience. 9/10 would recommend. Next time hopefully a little quicker. submitted by bobthedrummerva to rolex [link] [comments] |

All feedback on tunes is appreciated - good or bad. Specially when tunes are bad. At the end of the day I am just the mechanic and you guys are the racers. Do not hesitate irrespective of your tuning knowledge or racing skills!
Tuning method: 1.
Stock look - stock wheel rims, default wheel rim sizes, no aero (unless absolutely necessary for handling and stability) 2. Max performance with max handling possible 3. All cars
tuned vs. Unbeatable AI on championship tracks in seasonal weather.
However! Unbeatable AI is broken and bugged. Not every car can win 7/10 random races vs Unbeatable AI without abusing rewind/restart. Very few cars can beat it consistently. Hope it gets fixed
soon one day... 4. Bodykit only used if it does not ruin performance

2023.05.24 20:32 Express_Ad_6664 A Morphing Universe Chapter 6 (The Nature of Predators/Animorphs Crossover)
Dear Readers,
I wish to apologise for the noticeable drop in quality in my most recent chaptepost. I have been somewhat short on time recently, and was feeling the sting of keeping you, my beloved fans, waiting. Admittedly, I should have given Chapter 6 a bit more work, some rewording, a better proof read, and not attempted to post it after being awake for about 18 hours straight!
Please consider this version to be canon, and the other to be a belated April Fools joke!
[Previous] Arxur Farming World 57, 8th September 2136 The proximity alarms shrieked as the invaders entered the system. Running from his chambers as fast as he could, Chief Hunter Isif stumbled onto the bridge. Around him, the crew hurried to ready the ship for battle, their body-language unusually apprehensive. They were scared. This was it, the moment of truth. The unimaginable. The unthinkable. A system of the Arxur Dominion was being invaded. And even with the reinforcements from Shaza and three other Chief Hunters, Isif was not convinced that they could withstand what was coming. Nearly a thousand ships were arrayed around the system’s sole habitable planet, but given what they could be facing, Isif had no way of knowing if it would be enough.
It had all started about a month ago. A routine raid on one of the systems inhabited by the prey species known as ‘Venlil’. A half-squadron of bombers, dispatched to weaken defences, sow terror, and maybe grab a few cattle from the orbital stations. One of a thousand such attacks he had ordered over the years, presenting the image of a loyal and ruthless Arxur. A perfectly routine move to appease Betterment. Until it wasn’t. According to their last transmissions, they had been torn from hyperspace almost a lightyear away from their target, with strange ships waiting for them. No further messages had been received, and the entire unit was believed dead. If they had reported an overwhelming prey fleet, Isif could have dismissed it as bad luck and dispatched a larger fleet to ‘prevent the leaf-lickers from getting inflated egos’, as Betterment would have put it. But unidentified ships, ones clearly not belonging to any known prey… that was concerning.
So, Isif had held his forces back, and waited for further intelligence. Then spy ships had intercepted chatter and hyperspace trails that showed Gojid forces disappearing, sudden redeployments, and trails from civilian ships heading deeper into prey space. It was almost like the typical reaction to one of the Arxur’s larger raids, but Isif knew that no Chief Hunter had dispatched forces into Gojid territory, never mind a fleet large enough to rile the prey up
this much. When it became clear that some sort of major catastrophe had struck the homeworld of this particularly belligerent prey, Isif knew he had to find out exactly what was going on. So, he had ordered a fleet of several hundred ships, including cattle-ships and bombers, to be mustered and despatched into the heart of Gojid space.
Officially, the fleet was sent to raid this ‘Cradle’ following intelligence reports indicating weakened defences. Unofficially, Isif had sent them to find out if the prey were fighting amongst themselves, or if, as the rumour mill had it, another species of meat-eating sapients had graced the galactic stage. Isif had hoped that that was the case. Another predator species would provide a genuine challenge to Betterment, something to truly demand their attention, if the newcomers competed with the Dominion for resources and cattle. And if they managed to form peaceful relations, and inter-species relationships and agreements were to form, the Dissident movement could potentially gain friends…
The result had been a
massacre. Of the two hundred and thirty ships dispatched, barely eleven returned. Those that did sported holes bored straight through them, some with entire sections of the outer hull seemingly abraded away like flayed meat, leaving whole decks and compartments open to the void of space. Many of the crews had been shaking like Venlil pups, babbling incessantly. From what could be discerned, the fleet had arrived in the Cradle system and found the planet surrounded by an attacking fleet. This fleet was comprised of multiple styles of ship, but all were aimed at the planet. It had been assumed by the crew that this was indeed a new predator species, and the commanding Hunter had begun to open communications, when the alien fleet hailed them. A frail, four-eyed, blue prey beast lacking even the most rudimentary mouth had introduced themselves as a ‘War Prince’ of the ‘ISU’ and declared the Cradle theirs by ‘right of conquest’. Naturally, the Hunter had ordered his ships to open fire and drive the interfering prey from the system. Instead, their fire had sputtered impotently against the prey fleets’ shields, and then beams of unnameable energies had annihilated the Arxur forces. The few survivors had turned and fled.
Which was why Isif was now standing on the bridge of his flagship, waiting for the inevitable attack. In the last two days, three other farming worlds had gone silent, their last transmissions mentioning ships appearing out of nowhere and laying waste to the defenders. It was believed that the planets had been glassed, either by this new prey or by the Federation. So, here he was, trying to halt the advance at the next farming world in the enemy’s path with as many ships as he could spare from other garrisons. Isif cursed Shaza under his breath. If the egg-addled defective had sent more ships, they might have had a chance of surviving this, but the other Chief Hunter had argued that she needed to protect her own territory, ‘in case Isif’s entire sector falls’. Bitch. Could no one else see that if this threat gained a foothold in Arxur space, they would lose more than a single sector? Every farming world between here and Wriss was at stake!
The enemy ships came into view. Fewer than Isif had expected, maybe one hundred and fifty. Four different styles were represented, each more different than the last. The first three were of roughly even numbers. One was comprised of cruiser-sized vessels shaped like ornate, almost gaudy buildings with several double and single-edged blades running along and through them, surrounding one with a more aircraft-like core, at least three times the size of the others. Isif could see flattened pyramid-like bumps lining the ‘blades’ at regular intervals. Weapons, perhaps? But there was nothing for the missile or plasma to come out of. The level of decoration was bizarre, silver hulls with bronze and gold patterns.
How could glorified pleasure craft have devastated three Arxur fleets? There was something about the patterns, they looked almost like animals, and not meek herd beasts either.
The next style of ship was far more intimidating. Pitch black like obsidian, or the void itself, a shoal of predatory forward-raked crescents, led by an arrow-shaped vessel with two curved blade-wings that was at least two-thirds the size of Isif’s flagship. Yet again, there were no visible weapons. Maybe this was a different new-starfaring-species to that one that had destroyed the farming worlds? Unlikely. But if these were the ships of the ‘ISU’, it cast doubts on the initial report: those were not the ships of some meek prey species. The third group looked almost aquatic, forward pointing fish-like ovoids with two to four wings jutting from the rear third section. Several shallow, evenly spaced turrets lined the cerulean hull, showing that these sleek craft were most definitely warships. Not that there was any doubt, seeing as they had entered Arxur space and destroyed several defence fleets. Given their ‘elegant’ design, Isif could easily believe that they, at least, were prey vessels. Still, the exact shape of the ships reminded him of some streamlined aquatic predator, something no prey species would have allowed.
These three groups were arranged around the fourth type of ship, and it was this one that drew Isif’s gaze. Numbering at least twice as many as the other types, the majority were gunmetal-grey flattened arrowheads with wide sweeping wings, like massive atmospheric craft. The central hull had a hexagonal cross-section, with what looked like a large gun protruding from the tip of the ‘nose’, the closest to a conventional warship Isif could see amongst the attacking fleet. Four larger vessels spread throughout the fleet, however, were the strangest thus far. They had no engines, seeming to move without any visible propulsion. The core was comprised of two flattened four-sided pyramids fused together at the base, with elongated hoops protruding from the corners. What possible reason could there be for those? Were they engines, weapon batteries, decoration? Isif stopped staring, calmed his breathing, and focused on what mattered, devising a plan. And to do that, he needed to understand his enemy.
Multiple style of ship suggested that this was not a single species, so they must be with the Federation. Yet the only new species to appear recently, the blue prey ‘ISU’, were seemingly arrayed
against the Federation. And these ships looked too different from Federation designs to belong to prey. In fact, some looked almost like what his people would build, if they cared more about form than function. Particularly the black vessel that looked like an axe. Which suggested something Isif had previously only dreamed of: a predatory counterpart to the Federation. Such a union of species would have a multitude of cultures, unless all predators had their own ‘Betterments’, and people like him truly were aberrant. And if fellow predators could offer something other than Betterments’ lies, something other than life as an animal…
So, who could these apparent predators be? And why were they attacking the Arxur? Isif was desperately trying to formulate a plan. He had expected a larger fleet, a swarm of unknown enemies, not an insignificant handful of vessels. It was possible that the invaders had simply left forces to hold the systems they had captured, but then why continue to attack with such reduced numbers? He needed to understand, was there some secret weapon concealed within those ships…? A junior officer spoke up.
“Incoming hail, Chief Hunter. It seems to be coming from the largest of the ‘pyramid’ ships.”
Isif paused. Prey never
talked. If they opened communications with the Arxur, it was only to beg for mercy. These must be fellow predators, but then why attack his sector? Why not continue to focus their efforts on the Federation, assuming that the blue creatures were indeed just misidentified predators? He made a decision. If these were fellow predators, then it was possible that an agreement could be made. Maybe they had some non-sapient cattle they could trade, reducing dependency on the Federation prey. Ideas could also flow into the Dominion, providing an alternative to Betterments’ insane rhetoric. That would allow the dissidents to gain influence, paving the road for reform.
“Accept the hail. Maybe we can convince them to back down…”
The link opened. Isif felt his spirits lift at the sight. The creature staring at him from the screen had purple-grey fur with black blotches evenly spaced across its face. Two forward-facing eyes, yellow-green with slitted pupils, looked into his above a short muzzle that ended in a small black nose. A pair of pointed ears stuck out from the upper half of the head, twitching sporadically. The lower jaw had two protrusions like folds seeming to extend down from either side for about a claw’s length, with what looked like a ridge of bone running down from the upper lip. The eyes narrowed, seeming to signal the same thoughts that now rushed through Isif’s head.
There are other predators! At last, potential allies against the mindless horde of the Federation! These people must have been assaulted by the prey, and attacked Arxur system believing that they too were belligerent xenophobes. Indeed, as the furry sapient opened its mouth to speak, revealing a pair of dagger-like incisors on both jaws and two curved blade-teeth that were sheathed in the protrusions, Isif could see the future unfolding before his eyes. With these allies, he would be able to overthrow Betterment and force the Federation to leave his people alone…
Then Isif noticed the creature’s eyes. They did not look at him with excitement or the joy of meeting another sapient race. They held nothing but simmering rage. And in the background, Isif saw not only members of this species, but several others. Some of whom were most definitely prey. Before he could react, the creature spoke.
“Attention, Arxur Fleet. I am Praetor Tollene of the Nimthyl Command, commanding this fleet of the Inter-Species Union. We are here to liberate the unfortunate souls imprisoned here, and return them to civilised space. In accordance with the dictates of the 2034 Convention Against Slavery and Genocide, I am authorised to employ military force to ensure the rescue of captured civilians, up to and including orbital bombardment. You have twenty minutes to withdraw or be destroyed.” Isif was stunned.
Inter-Species Union. That confirmed his suspicions, but several members of the crew were clearly prey-beasts, and conventional wisdom showed that prey attempted to exterminate predators unless the predators dominated them. These prey were certainly not cattle, perhaps slaves or indentured workers? No, even if Isif had prey amongst his crew, he would never have allowed them to serve on the bridge. Then it hit him.
Liberate. Unfortunate souls. Return to civilised space. This was not a mistake. This new faction of predators and their subject races had come to take the cattle! But Isif could not imagine why. Surely a space-faring species should have cattle of their own already, even non-sapient food if the Federation hadn’t gotten to them. There had to be a way of convincing them to stand down and negotiate. Isif cleared his throat.
“I am Chief Hunter Isif of the Arxur Dominion, commander of this sector. I greet you in the name of cooperation and …”
The opposing commander, this ‘Praetor Tollene’, interrupted him.
“Be silent, beast. I did not come here to trade words with a mindless savage. Your forces have nineteen minutes to withdraw from this system, or we will annihilate you. Any members of your degenerate species who remain on the planet will be seized and tried for Crimes Against Sapience.” Isif stiffened. This commander was insane! His forces were vastly outnumbered, their weapons couldn’t possibly be that much better than the Arxur forces. But what did he want? He’d referred to Isif as a ‘savage’, had accused the farm-worlds’ population of ‘Crimes Against Sapience’. And referring to the Arxur as ‘degenerate’… what had he meant by that? Perhaps this new faction was not after the cattle at all. If Isif could just keep him talking, maybe they could find some common ground. Of course, he had to frame it in a way acceptable to Betterment.
“Praetor, you have not even explained why your forces are here. If it is territory that you desire, I assure you that there are better targets directly behind you. If it is cattle, or food that you need, I am afraid that my government will not allow you to take what is ours. I am certain, however, that if some sort of trade could be arranged, perhaps in exchange for technology, then they would prove amenable. Though a military alliance would likely be best, as it would allow us to capture enough cattle to feed both of our respective…”
The furred creature interrupted him again.
“Enough! I will not allow a walking affront to sapience to impugn the honour of the Nimthyl, and the entire Union, by suggesting that we are the same. Your species have done nothing but terrorise this sector of the galaxy since you received space-flight. You destroy planets, you maliciously target civilians and use chemical weapons indiscriminately, in blatant disregard of all Laws of Warfare. But that is not the worst part. You abduct fellow sapients and eat them. You torture and abuse them, you use them as cattle. If I had my way, your entire vile species would be wiped from the universe.” Isif was rapidly coming to understand that these ‘Nimthyl’ were not like his people. As he had hoped, other sapient predators found the practice of taking cattle repugnant. Perhaps the Federation had not succeeded in destroying their non-sapient livestock, that would certainly remove the need to raid prey worlds. They certainly could not support their population through
hunting. But that still didn’t explain why they were attacking the Arxur. He needed to steer the conversation in that direction, without saying anything that would get him purged.
“Praetor, I do not understand what you mean. The prey that make up the so-called Federation are just that: prey. They are mindless beasts who ape civilisation and technology, nothing more. As true sapients, beings higher on the food chain than those cowardly animals, we have the right to take them for our sustenance. And if you have met the Federation, then you know what they think of predators. Those warmongering lunatics are a threat to all true sapients, and any measures required to keep them from overrunning the galaxy are justified! You must know what they did, when they came to our world…”
The praetor growled at Isif.
“What they did, Arxur, was give you advanced technology that allowed you to leave your homeworld and bring an end to the horrific war you were embroiled in. With your planet united, you could have joined the Federation and become key members of a thriving galactic community, as we did eighty-seven years ago. You could have helped the Federation to overcome their innate fear of predators, ushered in an age of ecological understanding, and helped to bring an end to their destructive practices. But instead, you embarked on the kind of expansionist warfare that all civilised species abandon before achieving space flight. And as for your deriding of fellow sapients as nothing more than cattle…” His stomach clenched. The Nimthyl had no idea what the Federation had done to his people, the destruction of their food supply and all but handing Betterment the keys to the kingdom. He had to explain, make them see, and hopefully gather more information on exactly what these people wanted. All without tipping off Betterment.
“Do you seriously think that those leaf-lickers came to us with
benevolence? Their actions resulted in the death of entire swathes of our population, the destruction of our society! If the Prophet and the philosophy of Betterment had not intervened, we would have gone extinct! The Federation despise all predators! They are using you, trying to turn you to their own vile needs. And what, exactly, is this ‘Inter-Species Union’?”
The praetor snarled at him.
“The ISU is a collection of species, both carnivore and herbivore, working together to maintain peace in this galaxy. And we know what the Federation are, Arxur. We have witnessed the ecological devastation their deviant ideology causes on Venlil Prime, whose people are so terrified of predators that they almost killed our First Contact team, though the blame mostly lies with you. One of their primitive races, the Gojid, plotted to exterminate one of our member species, the Humans. At this moment, a fleet of our warships is disciplining them for their transgression. We have dispatched ambassadors to explain to the Federation why it is best to consider the matter settled.” Now that, that was surprising. Suddenly it all fell into place. These predators with access to non-sapient cattle, had met fiercer, more-reasonable-than-average prey, and decided to work together, for mutual benefit. Now, if only he could convince them to focus their fury on the Federation…
“Then you understand that they are nothing but mindless beasts. It is the natural order for those species with higher reasoning, free of the degenerate impulses that are empathy and compassion, to dominate the lesser species. Simply because the prey you have encountered are not as weak as…”
The look in the praetors’ eyes stopped Isif mid-sentence. What had he said to elicit such a reaction?
“Enough! The Federation’s diet has nothing to do with their qualification for sapience, and I find it disturbing that your people consider empathy and compassion to be weaknesses, even amongst yourselves. War Prince Dalar of the Andalites leads the assault upon the Gojid and he is one of the finest officers in the galaxy. In the ISU, there is no distinction between ‘predator’ and ‘prey’. All sapients have the right to be free from fear and violence. My forces are here to free your enslaved ‘cattle’ from their unlawful imprisonment, and return them to their own people. Hopefully, that will convince the Federation that not all carnivores are murderous deviants. Your twenty minutes are up.”
With that, the link terminated. Isif had only a moment to realise what that meant, before alarms began shrieking like frightened Dossur. As one, the ‘ISU’ fleet advanced. The void-black ships struck first, lances of searing red light spearing from barbed arrow-heads dotted like thorns along their hulls. As Isif watched, one of his crusiers was sliced in half lengthways by a beam from the ‘axe-ship’, the two halves rocketing away from each other on jets of vaporising metal before exploding. Smaller ships caught by the beam simply flared like miniature suns and vanished.
From that display of firepower, it was clear that the attacking fleet carried weaponry far more powerful, proportionately, than Isif’s forces. Though what those weapons were, Isif could not say. The closest thing he could think of were defence lasers, and they were far too big to be mounted on ships that small. And besides, his ships’ sensor suite had reacted… strangely, when the weapons had first fired. Gritting his teeth, Isif gave the order.
“All ships, attack! Drive the invaders and their prey lackeys from our system! And send all sensor data to my ship! We must understand what freakish technology these prey-loving weaklings employ. For the Glory of The Prophet!”
All around him, the assembled Arxur ships fought desperately to hold the line, raining enough plasma upon the enemy to glass a continent. To Isif’s horror, it was not enough. One of the streamlined ‘fish’ ships lost its’ shields, hull quickly developing a handful of glowing holes. Any one of those should have crippled the vessel, instead of only breaching a single compartment. Its fellows immediately reacted, turning their turrets against the cruiser squadron responsible. Isif saw beams of purple light, a mix of focused bosons and gamma rays if the sensors he had pointed in that direction were correct, strike each of the ships and gut them like Venlil pups. A veritable swarm of missiles streaked from the largest of the enemy vessels and annihilated a bomber that had been moving into attack range.
Looking at the big picture, Isif could see that each of the constituent fleets had their own unique style of fighting, and weaponry that was starkly different from their ‘allies’. The bladed ‘pleasure craft’ unleashed beams of golden energy from their flattened pyramids, destroying or coring any ship that got too close. Which, to Isif, seemed to be one third again the effective range of most of his fleets’ primary weapons. They moved in a loose formation, seeming to guard the central ship. The vast, fighter-like bulk moved with a grace Isif would not have believed, if he was not seeing it for himself. When its weapons fired, not even debris was left. Isif saw the largest of its ‘pyramids’ fire a spread of burning rays, reducing seven of his bombers to glowing golden motes.
The black crescents seemed to slide through space, like nocturnal predators stalking some herd of prey beasts. When they struck, each ship would target a different part of an Arxur cruiser, carving into the hull with the burning red light before darting away to the next target, leaving another member of their contingent to finish it off. The ‘axe-ship’, accompanied by an alternating escort of ‘crescents’, dove into Isif’s fleet, turning its full firepower upon any bomber it encountered. Isif paused.
All of them are focusing on the bombers. Now that was interesting. Bombers were not ships of the line, they focused on orbital emplacements and planetary targets. Their guns lacked the power of cruisers and true attack-ships, so why focus on them specifically? His attention was suddenly drawn to the vessels of the ‘Nimthyl’, particularly the bizarre ships without identifiable engines. They were driving deeper and deeper into the Arxur formation, weapons firing without ceasing as Isif lost a cruiser every few seconds. What was most shocking was what the Nimthyl guns were ripping his fleet apart with. Thus far, the attackers had used particle beams of some description, though Isif could not understand the different colours being produced. Purely theoretical until now, but comprehensible, like lasers fifty times as powerful as they should be. But not the Nimthyl weapons. The turrets lining the flanks and ‘hoops’ of the two classes of ship were emitting focused beams of gravity. Artificial gravitic fields focused on the Arxur hulls, ripping and tearing away like invisible drills, sending hyper-dense compacted shrapnel flying across the engagement zone. The nose-guns of the ‘fighter’ ships spat beams of pure blackness that caused entire sections of their target to just boil away, when they weren’t firing miniature black holes that left trails of spaghettified metal in their wake. The guns on the central ‘pyramid’ hulls spat out lightning bolts of what the sensors insisted was anti-matter, utterly obliterating their targets.
He cursed the unfathomable technology of the ISU. Every other species used lasers and plasma, kinetic munitions and explosive missiles. But these… anomalies, insisted on using weapons that broke the very laws of physics, weapons beyond the ability of any other, sensible species to construct. By the Prophet, the only part of their arsenal that was in any way relatable were the damnable anti-matter bolts… He stopped.
Anti-matter. Bombers. Targeting with extreme prejudice. They were hitting the bombers particularly hard because the anti-matter bombs could hurt them. Thus far, only concentrated fire from multiple cruisers had succeeded in breaking their shields, but a reasonably strong anti-matter bomb should also do the trick. He opened up a fleet-wide broadcast.
“Chief Hunter Isif to all bombers! Target the largest enemy ships you can reach. Use your anti-matter munitions to take down their shields, then open up with all weapons!”
His captains immediately moved to comply. Isif turned to the tactical overview, grimacing as the losses mounted. At least a third of the Arxur forces had been destroyed, almost eclipsing the reinforcements he’d received from the other Chief Hunters. At least ten more bombers were lost as he watched the screen. And then the first round of anti-matter missiles struck the ‘axe-ship’. Even as half were vapourised by point-defence beams, nine of the heaviest munitions the Arxur Dominion could produce hit home. The shields lit in in a blaze of light, and then broke. Another three bombs, trailing behind the first volley, blew off the port-side wing and shattered the engines, and a continuous stream of plasma from a good twenty cruisers and about six heavier vessels ripped a gaping wound in the flank. Three of the blade-buildings rushed to provide aid, and the bombers struck again. This time, two of the enemy lost their shields, one detonating in a coruscating burst of light. Isif grinned. Across the tactical display, the ISU found their defences less impregnable than they had thought. It would seem that the tides were indeed turning.
A message came through from one of the bomber crews. As he listened, Isif realised his mistake. While the ISU were indeed finally losing ships, his own losses were still higher than theirs. It seemed as if every time an enemy vessel was destroyed or crippled, it took twenty of his own vessels with it. If he’d drawn more ships from other garrison fleets, if his peers had been a bit more… selfless, he would have been able to maintain this rate of casualties. But as it stood, he would run out of vessels before the enemy did. And according to the captain of the bomber…
“Chief Hunter, our anti-matter munitions are depleted. We’ve got a handful of crude hydrogen bombs, but nothing with the same yield. Most other crews aren’t much better off. And with the enemy pressing us…”
More alarms sounded. Isif looked at the display in horror as another fleet appeared in the system, between his forces and the planet. More black crescents and axes, with a few massive vessels like black arthropods. Ships like massive trees and fungi, and even more of the gold and silver buildings. Nestled amongst them were ships baring the clear signs of Venlil construction. Beams of incomprehensible energies and missiles that generated singularities blasted out, striking his diminishing fleet from an unexpected direction. Isif took one look at the screen, and made a decision he had never imagined making.
“All forces, retreat. We must preserve what forces we can and take word of this to the rest of the Dominion.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few hours later, Isif stood before a hologram of Prophet Descendant Giznel. The situation was even more dire now than it had been when Isif first gave the order to retreat. Another six of his cattle worlds had been lost to the ISU, the forces Isif had left to guard them wiped out much as his personal fleet had almost been. A few stragglers had managed to escape the battles, but nothing of any meaningful power or in sufficient numbers. His master looked at him dispassionately.
“Ten cattle worlds lost, Isif. This is not welcome news.” Isif looked down.
“My deepest regrets for failing the Dominion, Cruel One. We were unprepared for the enemy’s weapons and tactics, but…”
The Prophet-Descendant held up a clawed hand.
“Shaza would be laughing, and calling for your head, Isif, if she had not suffered similar losses. It would seem that some prey-beasts called the ‘Andalites’ simply swooped in and obliterated her entire front-line defences” Isif had not known this. It was good to hear that Shaza had indeed been humbled, but the fact that the ISU had been able to strike both his territory and hers made the size of their forces clear. The Prophet Descendant continued.
“Your report shows that we are facing an unnatural alliance of predators and prey, armed with technologies beyond anything we can bring to bear. And if the videos you received from the cattle-tenders you left behind are true, their combat power is equally formidable on the ground. Even if they are weaklings, tainted by the deviancies of empathy and compassion, they have been able to hurt us as not even the Federation could. What is your assessment of what our next steps should be? You have, after all, actually spoken with them.” Isif considered his next words. The ground forces abandoned on Farming World 57 had sent transmissions showing what the ISU were doing. It proved the vehemence of what the Praetor had said, when it came to the ISU’s thoughts on sentient cattle. Shuttles and fighters had descended from the invading fleet and headed straight for the farms. Any defences were destroyed by smaller weapons to those used by their combat vessels, and then troops had been deposited. The fish-ships had proven to belong to blue-grey prey creatures covered in spines, muscular brutes who battered the guards into submission, if they didn’t simply blow them apart with purple energy weapons. The Nimthyl, it transpired, were not as tall as the Arxur, barely coming up to their shoulder. But when they bit down, it was invariably fatal for the Arxur. Every one of the six or seven species assaulting the farms wielded handheld beam weapons that reduced the guards to piles of ash in an instant. There were also reports of major settlements being bombarded from orbit until the local leaders signalled their surrender. In all, Isif estimated it had taken half a local day for the Farming World to fall.
But it was what happened afterwards that made what the Dominion was facing perfectly clear. Shortly after the first of the farms had been taken, the last remaining pockets of resistance had intercepted an enemy transmission.
“Captain, we’ve secured the prison camp where they’re keeping the Fed civies. Fuck, they really are eating them, there’s bodies everywhere. The prisoners are just trembling, won’t come out of their cages. Some just start screaming when they look at us. And the guards… Fucking psychos are grinning at us, asking us if we want a taste. Some of the bodies are kids, by the looks of it. Oh god. What do you want us to do? The way some of the men are looking at them…” The reply had come back.
“The High Tribunal has authorised use of the Auschwitz Protocol, and Praetor Tollene concurs. Do what you will, sergeant.” Isif had soon found what that meant. Arxur soldiers and displaced civilians had caught most of it on camera. Farm workers had been tied up and tossed into cattle pens, along with several knifes and blunt instruments. What had followed needed no explanation. Guards had been lined up against nearby walls, wrestled into position by either the blue-grey spiny prey or a green species with blades along their limbs. The guards had then been shot with beams of fiery energy, burning holes straight through them. Some had simply burst into flames, screaming in agony.
There were other images, other scenes of Arxur being slaughtered. But all remaining forces had reported the same thing. Groups of Venlil, and even some other Federation species, escorting the cattle to waiting shuttles, which then left. Clearly, what the Praetor had said about returning the cattle to their own people was true.
Isif looked straight at Giznel. He knew that the next words he spoke could well be considered treason. But right now, he didn’t care. They were facing an enemy that did not care about predator-prey relations, that had stronger weapons and ships, and who would punish anything they saw as wrongdoing with an almost hypocritical cruelty. And who, if his hunch was correct, outnumbered them by a not insignificant margin.
All that Betterment, and people like Giznel and Shaza, wanted was to continue dragging the Arxur down the path of ruin. Everything that his people could have been had been lost, their culture, their civilisation, their
morals, their very empathy. All discarded by the Prophet and his lackeys in their efforts to produce their perfect warrior. And now, their fellow predators saw them as nothing but beasts.
Things needed to change.
“What I believe, Your Savageness, is that we may have to reconsider how we do things.”
Another cliffhanger! Next time, we'll get another multi-POV chapter, as we see what life is like on the occupied Cradle. Will the Gojid throw of the shackles of predator oppression? What dark secrets will the Federation observers find? What exactly is the Howler Protocol? Tune in next time!

2023.05.24 17:58 Iniamyen 2018 SE - worst windshield wipers I have ever experienced
I bought a CPO 2018 Camry SE. 30k miles, great shape. I love the car with the exception of the wipers. Initially when I bought the car, the wipers were very worn out (the rubber blade itself was mostly gone), so I figured I would get some OEM blades and the issue would be fixed.
It turns out that this car's wipers are just absolutely terrible. Even with brand new OEM blades, the driver's side wiper has gaps during the downswing where the blade isn't making full contact with the windshield. As far as I can tell this is due to how hard the wiper arm is pushing down -- if it were a little less pressure, I think the blade wouldn't be deformed and would make full contact all the way across the arm's reach and wouldn't leave gaps. Is this a known issue with known fixes or did I just get boned with a bad one?
Aside from this issue, the car is great, but this is something that even my 1990 Toyota Truck didn't have.
