2023.05.29 00:45 AutoModerator Weekly Q&A Megathread. Please post any questions about visiting, tourism, living, working, budgeting, housing here!

Hello, welcome to London!

Visiting us? Moving to study or work? Brief layover? Moving to a new part of London? Any small questions about life here, if you're new or been here your whole life, this is the place!
We get a lot of posts asking very similar questions so this post aims to address some of our most Frequently Asked Questions, and give you a place to ask for assistance.
Your first port of call should be

the london wiki

It includes sections on:
What should I see and where are the non-touristy stuff and hidden gems? We've written about the big must-sees here and we highly recommend TfL's Experiences site. We've listed some of our favourite lesser-known stuff here And the cheap/free stuff here
How do I pay for the Tube/bus, and what's an Oyster card? You don't pay cash. You can use a number of contactless payments systems such as your Contactless bankcard (which is widespread in the UK, but maybe not so much elsewhere), Apple Pay, Android Pay, or you can buy an Oyster card and top it up with credit. See here for more.
Where should I live? What's x area like? Have a look here It includes recommended sites to find places to live and rent, and has a section on what particular areas are like.
How do I get from this place to that place? Use Citymapper. Honestly, we're not shills for them; it's just a really good app and is used by most of the locals on this sub.
Is x area safe? Yes. Bad stuff can happen in any large city, but London is generally very safe. There aren't any no-go zones. Even under the shadow of terrorist attacks, most Londoners feel safe. See our safety page here for more.
Where can I watch the baseball/basketball/football/handegg match? A comprehensive guide to all London football matches in all leagues can be found at tlfg.uk. Use Fanzo to find pubs showing a variety of sports and see our list of other places here
How do I get a UK SIM card for my phone? Advice on networks and how to get a SIM card is covered here. It also includes suggestions of cafés and other places where you can get free wifi and do a bit of work.
Is the London Pass worth it? Probably not
Other subs that you may find helpful:
  • /LondonSocialClub - Meeting new people for events, activities and/or pints.
  • /IWantOut & /UKvisa - Check if you need a visa and how to get one if you want to work here.
  • /LegalAdviceUK - Good for all sorts, especially for questions about landlords and contracts.
  • /UKPersonalFinance - Another goldmine of sage advice.
  • /AskUK - Great for general questions about UK life that aren't specific to London.
Tips for posting:
Tell us about you - If you want us to suggest things for you to do then you need to give us a good idea of what you enjoy. Don't just say "I like music", say what type of music. Don't just say you want "somewhere nice to eat", say what type of cuisine you like (or don't like). The more specific you are the better, otherwise you'll just get pointed back to the generic guidebooks, blogs and our wiki.
Tell us your budget - If you're on a budget then tell us what it is and we can bear that in mind when making recommendations. There's no point in us coming up with ideas for things to do and places to eat if they'll clean out your wallet within the first 5 minutes. Saying you want something "cheap" isn't really helpful because what's cheap is entirely subjective.
Tell us where you'll be based - Let us know where you'll be staying so that we can give local recommendations.
Asking about hotels or hostels - We have homes here so know very little about what the hotels are like. Look on review websites such as TripAdvisor. However, if you say "I've been looking at these three hotels. Which do you think is the better location?" then that's the sort of thing we can answer.
Non-touristy stuff - There are no secret corners where we hide the good stuff from outsiders! This is one of the most written about cities in the world, so when we want to go to a museum, or gallery, go window shopping, or whatever, we look at the same sources as tourists (listings sites, blogs, etc - see front page of the wiki).
These weekly posts are scheduled to post each Monday at 00:01. If it's late in the week you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us [ModMail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Flondon with any suggested improvements!)

2023.05.29 00:39 digitalnomadgoal Can you travel Central and South America with around 11K for 6 months? Is it a realistic budget?

I'm planning to travel through some countries in Central and South America (Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala) for 6 months, starting October.
I can spend around 11000€ ($11800) on this without blowing through emergency savings for my (then likely jobless...) return. I know that Chile will burn the budget more than the other countries, but I do plan to see all of the country, particularly because it looks so gorgeous and is one of the "safer" ones in the region for female solo travellers.
I usually stay in hostels, but also cheap hotel rooms once a week to get some decent sleep in because I can't really sleep in hostels. I eat as cheaply as possible. I take public transport wherever it's reasonably safe. The one thing I don't save on are tours into nature / organized treks (vs. not doing them), because I love nature and don't drive.
In your opinion or experience, is this a realistic budget in 2023?
Thank you for your input!

2023.05.29 00:34 wizard7865 My friend won’t pay me back, what do I do?

Last year I (21F) decided I was going to EDC Las Vegas, so i bought a ticket and was going to camp with my friend Laura. Well, a couple months later Laura decided she wasn’t going anymore, so I was left not knowing where I was staying. Last minute, probably like 4 months before the festival, my friend Jay (25M) said one of his friends Derick (25M) needed someone to stay with. I had met Derick before (actually used to work with him) and he was always nice and super chill so I thought it’d be fine to stay with him. Derick didn’t really help me plan, he just mentioned he wanted to save money and stay somewhere cheap. So I sent him the hotel I found and let him know the price ($800) and booked it. Since it was last minute the price was up there and I didn’t have the money on me immediately to pay it right then, so I did a payment plan on it. After months of giving Derick time to pay me for the hotel I asked him two weeks before we left when he’d pay me and he said he’d give me the money the day we left for Vegas. I also want to mention we took my car and I drove. I had to get new tires and some maintenance on my car for the trip as well and that wasn’t cheap. Before we left I grabbed some snacks and drinks for us on the car ride and asked Derick if he wanted anything and he gave me a whole list of snacks he wanted so I told him I’d get them and we can split the cost. The day of, I pick him up and asked if he just wants to pay for gas instead of groceries as it would’ve been the same price. He does and we make our way to Vegas. On the car ride I mention the hotel and how it was so expensive so I did a payment plan. I regret telling him this because then he asked me if he’d be able to pay for half of it then and the rest when he gets paid again. I was a bit annoyed because he had months to save up to pay me but I understand money can be tight and didn’t want to stress him out. I’d also like to mention Derick works 50 hour weeks as a Nurse and I’m a barista at starbucks in college. Derick makes probably 5x more money than me. On the way there I tried talking to him and was excited to get to know him better but it didn’t seem like he was interested in talking very much. This was the whole trip honestly. He was such a downer and super negative and complaining the whole trip. I tried my best to be a good friend to him and cater to him and all his needs but he was so ungrateful and didn’t thank me at all. I did try to make the best of and still had fun but it definitely put a damper on our whole groups vibe. My friends have a theory that he wants to be Jays favorite who I mentioned earlier and ever since I got closer with Jay they think Derick is jealous of me. It’s just a theory and could totally not be true but I do think it’s interesting. Anyways, I texted Derick after the trip asking when he would pay me for gas and all the food I bought him and the rest of the hotel and he said “i get paid next week so i can most likely get it to you by then”. I feel extremely disrespected and am now upset because not only did he make the trip not fun but he can’t pay me the $300 he owes me. I’m not sure what to do, if I should wait and give him a week or press him about it? I have talked to Jay and he said he’d talk to him about it but I don’t think he has. I’d like to stop bothering Derick and move on but I also need the money he owes me as Im moving in a couple weeks.

*THIS HAUL WAS DONE ONLY FOR MY FRIENDS (apart from the ralph lauren zip up)*
Hi, my name is yahboyyah and this is my second haul. I got all my items from this dope reddit and Pandabuy discord, and had to think of my friends interests lol - make sure to join for guidance!
These are my best friends and I have known them since I was around 5 years old lol - thought I'd surprise them with some stuff. They did already know about pandabuy and so they knew they were reps - still greatly appreciated it. I felt very good inside lol cant explain.

Budget: £150
Prior to my 1st haul, I have learnt much more and for future hauls coming, I am prepared much better - I have decided to get more quality less quantity (although there is still lots). I have 3 more hauls coming within the next 4 weeks.

2023.05.28 23:20 Best_Club_In_America USVI amended allegations: J.P. Morgan's own due diligence reports on Epstein included that he "purchased" a 14-year-old European girl who lived at his home and had a $600,000 account with them; J.P. Morgan insists that that's not necessarily any indication of anything weird going on

USVI amended allegations: J.P. Morgan's own due diligence reports on Epstein included that he

https://preview.redd.it/y4s7btzo2n2b1.png?width=2100&format=png&auto=webp&s=34213ec0ae4002b4648a57d56142140b63cc7bee
tl;dr: J.P. Morgan basically maintains that setting up a non-relative teenager from another continent (and who was listed as living at Epstein's address) with an account worth over half a million dollars is not necessarily any indication that something fishy was going on, and so J.P. Morgan shouldn't be held liable.
https://www.insideedition.com/jeffrey-epstein-jp-morgan-lawsuit-bought-girl-14
The complaint, filed in connection with a lawsuit against JP Morgan by the attorney general of the U.S. Virgin Islands, alleges that "at least 20 individuals paid through JP Morgan accounts were victims of trafficking and sexual assault."
News articles about Jeffrey Epstein purchasing a 14-year-old girl from Europe were allegedly included in J.P. Morgan's due diligence reports about the pedophile, according to an amended complaint filed in connection with a lawsuit against the bank by lawyers for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The complaint alleges that executives at J.P. Morgan should have known that the girl lived in a property owned by the pedophile.
It then further alleges that the largest bank in the country transferred over $600,000 from accounts controlled by Epstein into the girl's own personal J.P. Morgan account.
"Like other women who received payments from Epstein, Jane Doe 1 listed Epstein’s apartments on 66th Street in New York City as her address, which should have been a red flag to JP Morgan," reads the complaint obtained by Inside Edition Digital.
Lawyers for the U.S. Virgin Islands filed the civil lawsuit against J.P. Morgan last year, writing in their initial complaint that the company "turned a blind eye to evidence of human trafficking over more than a decade because of Epstein’s own financial footprint, and because of the deals and clients that Epstein brought and promised to bring to the bank."
The recently filed amended complaint says that despite news reports identifying this woman as a possible victim of sex trafficking, executives at J.P. Morgan allegedly referred to her in an internal document as Epstein's "assistant or young lady he brought over from Prague (or some place like that)."
That same internal document allegedly "describes charges in New York, Palm Beach, and St. Thomas for lingerie and other sexually explicit material," according to the complaint.
"Elsewhere, J.P. Morgan describes media reports referring to the fact that Epstein purchased her at age 14," says the complaint. "She remained a customer of J.P. Morgan, and Epstein paid her more than $600,000, from his accounts at J.P. Morgan, including more than $165,000 after Epstein’s plea."
In court documents, J.P. Morgan, says that it "lacks knowledge or information sufficient to form a belief as to the truth of the allegations," and therefore denies the allegations, including that any knowledge of the alleged victim residing at an apartment owned by Epstein "should have been a red flag."
In response to the $600,000 payment, a lawyer for J.P. Morgan states that the allegation "characterize[s] the contents of documents" and "respectfully refers the Court to those documents for a complete and accurate recitation of their contents."
The complaint also alleges that top executives at the company were aware that Epstein had been convicted of soliciting an underage girl
"Concerns about the risks that Epstein posed were well known enough that numerous JP Morgan senior executives... met in various groupings in July and October 2008, January 2011, August 2011, and July 2013," the complaint claims.
The complaint identifies several executives by name, but does not elaborate on what each individual allegedly knew or discussed in the meetings mentioned.
GOVERNMENT OF THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS VS J.P. MORGAN: SECOND AMENDED COMPLAINT
The newly amended complaint further alleges that members of the firm “facilitated or participated in, directly or indirectly, the trafficking enterprise Epstein helmed. The investigation revealed that J.P. Morgan knowingly, negligently, and unlawfully provided and pulled the levers through which recruiters and victims were paid and was indispensable to the operation and concealment of the Epstein trafficking enterprise.”
More specifically, the complaint alleges that Epstein paid large sums of money to a number of female victims and enablers through his J.P. Morgan accounts.
The complaint alleges that "at least 20 individuals paid through J.P. Morgan accounts were victims of trafficking and sexual assault in Little St. James, New York, and/or other Epstein properties."
The complaint does not name any of these alleged victims or the alleged enablers who received payments, with the exception of Ghislaine Maxwell, who the complaint claims received $23 million in the span of just four years from1999 and 2002.
Another woman, identified only as a "recruiter given immunity through Epstein’s non-prosecution agreement," received "more than $728,000 from Epstein’s J.P. Morgan accounts," according to the complaint.
J.P. Morgan began doing business with Epstein as early as 1998, according to the complaint, managing approximately 55 accounts for him, which were worth hundreds of millions of dollars. J.P. Morgan parted ways with Epstein in 2013, keeping him on as a client for five years after he pleaded guilty to soliciting a minor in the state of Florida, according to the complaint.
Epstein was arrested in 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking minors in Florida and New York. He was found dead in a jail cell one month after his arrest. A medical examiner ruled his death a suicide.
J.P. MORGAN ANSWER TO SECOND AMENDED COMPLAINT AND STATEMENT OF AFFIRMATIVE DEFENSES
"J.P. Morgan facilitated and concealed wire and cash transactions that raised suspicion of—and were in fact part of—a criminal enterprise whose currency was the sexual servitude of dozens of women and girls in and beyond the Virgin Islands," the lawsuit filed by the U.S. Virgin Islands alleges. "Human trafficking was the principal business of the accounts Epstein maintained at JP Morgan."
J.P. Morgan did not respond to Inside Edition Digital's requests for comment, but it has denied any wrongdoing and in an answer to the lawsuit the bank says it "did not have knowledge, constructive or otherwise, that a person under the age of 18 would be caused to engage in a commercial sex act."
That filing also states that J.P. Morgan "did not have knowledge, constructive or otherwise, that means of force, threats of force, fraud, coercion, or any combination of such means would be used to cause any person to engage in a commercial sex act."

Canadian woman barred from Cuba over Facebook posts
My cousin want to go to L:as Vagas, as they found really cheap flights and hotel package. They were trying to convince me to go and said they were not going for the gambling as there were lots of other things you can do. (Las Vagas is the last place I would want to spend money).
I told them that with the same money I could go to Cuba. They said they are not going back to Cuba again because of the Human right issues. (type of people who just generally follow what they hear or the loudest people). I told them that most of the protesters that were taken to jail was released. Yes I know that dictatorship types of government sometimes have people followed ect.
I try to see both sides of an issue and have been looking for articles on treatment of Cubans by the Government in recent years
But I see this video today in my feed on Youtube from only a month ago. This is shocking and eye opening and just wrong. I'm sort of speechless now.

2023.05.28 22:08 yakkitygiraffe Where to spend a fat week on the Pacific coast of Mexico

Help! All I want for my next trip is natural beauty and quiet relaxation - I'm zeroing in on this part of Mexico because it's new territory and I've heard good things....and we have a ton of points that are easy to redeem on flights to MX.
Ideal would be a small resort or boutique hotel, on the beach, with some kind of gym/spa/wellness type of option.
Just me and my spouse, no kids, hoping to spend a romantic and relaxing week together. We don't mind some hassle to get someplace wonderful. Thanks for any advice.

2023.05.28 21:52 OfficialJaneDoe Read a lot, but still have doubts about our itinerary, please help

Going on honeymoon to Iceland in September this year, 17-27th. Spent a lot of time reading other people’s itinerary’s, but nothing matches with my ideas so far. We are not used to driving long distances, so we would like to limit driving time a day to max 4-4,5 hours (less is better). That’s why we chose not to do the ring road. So here’s what I came up with instead. Please tell me where I screwed up or could do better!
17th: arrive by plane 8pm. Rent a car, drive to Reykjavik, stay there.
18th: discover Reykjavik. Drive to Selfoss at the end of the day. Stay in hotel there.
19th: start the day early by visiting Kerid, Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir parc. Sleep in Selfoss again
20th: Seljalandsfoss, Gljufrabui, Kvernufoss, Skogafoss (hike around there). Stay in Vik.
21th: walk around Fjadrarglufur caves, sleep in hotel in Hofn.
22th: Vestrahorn/Stokness. Sleep in Hofn again.
23th: Jokulsarlon, diamond beach, svartifoss (hike around there). Sleep in Vik.
24th: visit black sand beach. Drive to Stykkisholmur on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Stay in hotel there.
25th: explore stykkisholmur, kirkjufell, sleep in stykkisholmur again.
26th: drive through grundarfjordeur to svortuluft lighthouse, to budir, to borgarnes (to make a loop on the peninsula), sleep in Reykjavik (or borgarnes?)
27th: Blue lagoon. Fly back at 7pm.
Some days feel cramped and others too empty. However we want to have some space to be able to be a bit flexible regarding the weather. And we will probably be a bit tired from the wedding so some relaxing days won’t hurt us. But we also want to make the most out of this trip. So please advice us! What did we miss, what should we change?

2023.05.28 21:42 kotajones Golden Behavior Advice

Hi 👋🏼 I have a golden retriever who is a 3 year old female. She’s my first golden ever but I have had labs before and I have an older Australian shepherd. I’ve never had a dog quite this energetic or stubborn. I got her as a puppy during covid, so she is one pampered spoiled pooch. Lol she was with me all the time during lockdown and got whatever she wanted. I got her right after my grandmother passed away. I was so depressed I just needed a reason to keep going, and taking care of her really gave me that reason.
She is a good dog for the most part. She’s friendly with people and other animals, but she harasses anyone that will tolerate her with her favorite ball. She wants to chase the ball 24/7, and she constantly puts it in my lap. Over and over and over. (She thinks my full time job should be throwing that ball for her 😂)
Her biggest problem is her destructive behavior in the yard. My husbands grandmother lives with us and gardens and my dog is constantly digging it all up. We’ve bordered the yard in river rock trying to keep her from digging out, but she digs right through that too. She hasn’t gotten out of the yard yet but she’s dug some huge holes at the fence line within minutes, so I’m worried to leave her out for more than five minutes without watching her. We live in Florida and she loves chasing the lizards, so I don’t know how to stop her with this.
She also is horrible with her recall. Unless she sees that she will get a treat, she will just sit in the yard and stare at me as I call her back. If I try to go get her, she does zoomies running from me. She’s like a kid constantly pushing boundaries.
Have any of you had this problem with your golden? Do they ever calm down? Lol 😅 I thought maybe if I could exhaust her it would curb these behaviors, but nothing like that has worked. I can spend all day taking her on jogs, to the beach, swimming, throwing the ball, and wrestling with my other dog, and she will still dig or get in the trash if I don’t have my eye on her constantly.
I love her to death, but sometimes I want to pull my hair out. Any positive advice is appreciated.

2023.05.28 21:29 Business_Candidate16 Oahu and Maui June Babymoon - Itinerary check!

Aloha!
My Wife and I will be going to Maui and Oahu for our babymoon from June 1st to June 12 (was supposed to be a honeymoon full of drinks and raw fish for both of us but alas!)
Wife will be 22 weeks pregnant when we arrive. We want to keep it chill and relaxed. Of course, we will play things by ear or switch things up (rain, beach conditions, reservations, etc). Some days are less planned (Days 9 and 12) as such.
Wife is a pretty strong swimmer, I am less so. We probably won't do any boat tours due to the pregnancy, but we did want to try snorkeling off the beach (neither of us ever snorkeled).
Appreciate any feedback on our itinerary below, obvious mistakes, and any tips for an enjoyable babymoon and/or beginner snorkeling!
Mahalo!
Maui (June 1 - June 6th)
Day 1 - Montreal/Kahului
Day 2 - Kahului
Day 3 - Lahaina
Day 4 - Lahaina
Day 5 - Lahaina
Day 6 - Lahaina/Honolulu/Waikiki
Day 7 - Waikiki
Day 8 - Waikiki

2023.05.28 21:29 dunxd Chromecast with Google TV for hotel rooms

I help with the tech side of a small hotel in the UK. They recently bought four Chromecasts (4th generation - Google TV) to make some TVs smart.
I realise that the basic setup means that anyone connected to the same network would be able to cast content onto any of the TVs, which is a bit risky. To prevent this, I've put the chromecasts on a separate network from the guest wifi - meaning that the remote controls are the only way guests can control the Chromecast in their room. However, some guests may want to cast from their device.
Is there a way to configure the Chromecast so that it can only be cast to after scanning a QR code or similar displayed on the attached TV screen, or similar?
Also, is there a quick way to remove any accounts that guests may have set up during their stay so the next guests can't use them?
I've seen this sort of thing in large hotels I have stayed in - but this is a tiny hotel that doesn't have resources to set up a server or pay for a cloud service. Is there a cheap/free way?
