This September, Tan Dun takes part in three days of performances and lectures in Beijing, exploring the reinvention of the classical music institution and method as well as the legacy of Toru Takemitsu.
On September 21, Tan Dun hosts a lecture at his alma mater, the Central Conservatory of Music, on the mission and methodology of art with special guests Wang Liguang and Li Xiujun. The discussion will focus on the future of classical music, and particularly on the contributions of the East and the responsibilities of the next generation of composers.
At the Beijing Center for the Arts Tan Dun hosts In Memory of Toru Takemitsu: Music Film, Film Music on September 23, commemorating the 20th anniversary of his mentor’s passing. The program includes a lecture, illuminating how listeners might connect to 20th-Century and Contemporary music through visual elements, as well as performances of Takemitsu’s Viola Concerto, Air, All in Twilight, Toward the Sea, plus And then I knew ’twas wind alongside Tan Dun’s Bassrain: In Memory of Toru Takemitsu and music by The Beatles.
September 25 sees Tan Dun lead the China National Symphony Orchestra in a concert spotlighting the interplay of music and visuals, presented in memory of Toru Takemitsu at the China National Center for the Performing Arts. The first part of the performance features images and animation by students of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, commissioned by Tan Dun to accompany Britten’s Four Sea Interludes and Takemitsu’s A String Around Autumn. Tan Dun also leads his Symphonic Poem on Three Notes.
In the second half of the performance, Tan Dun conducts a program of film music including selections from the scores of his Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Banquet; Takemitsu’s Training and Rest, Black Rain and The Face of Another; John Williams’s Memoirs of a Geisha; Gustavo Dudamel’s The Liberator; and Du Wei’s I am not Madame Bovary.
