This week Tan Dun takes the podium in Hannover conducting the NDR Radiophilharmonie to kick off his five-city tour in Germany. Sharing the stage with the dynamic percussionist Alexej Gerassimez, Tan Dun’s program features Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and his own Percussion Concerto: Tears of Nature. Tan Dun describes the pieces as “visual symphonies”, music that tells a story and helps audiences visualize the imagery from the composer’s point of view. Tan Dun’s Percussion Concerto is divided into three movements, each one representing a different color of nature “the color of nature’s thunder, the color of nature’s passion and the color of nature’s energy – each united with the human spirit” and was inspired by the natural disasters in Sichuan, Fukushima and New York – the earthquake, tsunami and hurricane.
