2023.06.03 16:59 Chazzyphant Fun with apps: Acloset AI suggestions: do they work? Let's investigate
I started a contest with my husband where every day that passes, starting on June 1, is $1--for him no YouTube and for me no clothing shopping. Whoever cracks first has to pay the other person the accumulated dollars when/if they crack. Well I cannot be the first one to crack, especially since he's so convinced it's going to be me!
Therefore it's time to find other ways to enjoy fashion and style without shopping. I downloaded a new closet app, Acloset, after watching a Youtube video (heh) about it. I've downsized my wardrobe in the recent past--about 200 items total (including special occasion wear, winter sweaters, summer linens, etc) so it only took a couple hours to upload and detail all the items.
I suspect the "AI" is a tool that works like the front end of Whering's paper doll function, where it simply loads your items on a carousel and uses tags to combine them, which is fine. It's fun to see what they come up with.
The AI outfit suggestions are amusing and inspirational (to a point), there's multiple categories:
Outfit based on occasion: I really like this. When setting up one's wardrobe, there are tags to specify the occasion (work, party, daily, etc). So the AI presumably pulls from those tags to make suggestions. The options are casual, smart casual, and formal.
How about we add a pop of [color]? This is the most amusing to me as they include white, beige, gray, and black. Is there such as thing as a "pop of beige", Acloset? At any rate, the app choses 1-2 items in that color and makes an outfit.
Just right for the weather: this is based on your location. It's typically rather bland business-casual or smart casual suggestions with either sweaters and boots or dresses and sandals type thing.
[Specific garment] outfit ideas: I like this--it basically wardrobes your one item with multiple suggestions.
Features: this I
really like: you can instruct the AI not to pair certain items as mismatched categories. For example, the system kept pairing a bulky, boxy sweatshirt with a slim, narrow, lightweight coated canvas jacket. It also kept pairing a dress with a shirt (?) and a sweater or similar. It's easy to instruct the AI to cut that out.
Like this this really irritates me as who is going to wear a full length dress marked formal, a dress shirt, a blazer, and sneakers. I actually love the sneakers + formal dress but come on. That's the type of thing you mark "mismatched categories".
You can save outfits and add to them (similar to other apps) or delete items.
Pros: I really like the multiple approaches--occasion, weather, wardrobing an item. I always enjoy building outfits and seeing how AI combines clothing. It gives me tons of new ideas.
Cons: The outfits feel random--much more random than OpenWardrobe.
The app does not consider weight or texture of them item or comfort--for example, it paired a snug, sheer skirt with over the knee boots (one of the single most uncomfortable outfits I've ever tried on) because the skirt is cream and black and the boots are black (or that's my guess at least). Urg.
The app seems very focused on a few items to the exclusion of others. For example, I have a
single sweatshirt loaded, a "Grailed"-style item I found in a vintage store. It's a paint splattered Sherman Williams sweatshirt that I cut the cuffs off of and hardly ever wear as it's not conventionally flattering, but it's a hella cool item. For whatever reason, Acloset has made
dozens of suggestions with this damn thing, to the point I'm tempted to tell the app to exclude it from suggestions. My guess is that I didn't upload many casual tops and therefore whenever the outfit calls for a casual top, that gets picked. But come ON.
The app makes outfits without shoes. It includes bags on the reg but not shoes. I mean...
Shoes are often the most difficult part of an outfit to me, so much so that I've built outfits "shoes up" rather than adding shoes last. So a full outfit
with shoes is a valuable function of the app. So much so that I'm tempted to remove or forbid bags and see if the app will put in shoes instead.
Okay the best part: outfit examples:
Flatlay 01: Banana Republic silk camisole, Lilith blazer, FP pants, Donna Karan Collection bag, no shoes suggested Result in person okay I don't hate it. The top handle bag + camisole and blazer feels a little mumsy to me, despite the funkiness of the blazer and the artsy details on the bag. These FP pants I had the hem lowered and they are still really hard to pair shoes other than sandals with. A B+ outfit.
Flatlay: the sweatshirt, By Marlene Birger skirt, Tory Burch boots an adorable idea, SUPER uncomfortable outfit. It can be styled two ways
Style option 01 Style option 02, which I prefer you can tell by the look on my face I find this a little ridiculous.
Would not wear in real life, so a fail. I will say I did put the boots on over bare legs/feet which was a very unpleasant experience, and one I wouldn't do in real life. So the idea of a shorter skirt, OTK boots and a boxy, oversized top is not misplaced. Just not for a warm, humid late spring day after a full day of work.
Flatlay 03 Universal Standard dress, Prada mules, Target clutch. Wow do I love this. The app stumbled on exactly what works about all three of these items--the sleek yet artistic / interesting minimalism of them all. I would love to find an occasion to which to wear this.
In person I just love this. I look very "over it" in the pictures but that's just my face, heh. Totally chic and interesting outfit, A+.
Flatlay 04 Madewell shoes, Target clutch, That Freaking Sweatshirt, Wit and Wisdom jeans
It's cute I mean, it's not reinventing any wheels and it's not something I wouldn't come up with on my own, but I do love the idea of a clutch with casual clothing. A- because LET IT GO on the sweatshirt, app.
Flatlay 05 Anine Bing tee, Lilith blazer, Vince pants, Donna Karan bag, no shoes suggested
It's...fine it's a business casual inoffensive outfit. I paired it with loafers because that seemed like the best bet. So the thing is...that tee shirt is not a layering piece. It's oversized and draped and it doesn't fit under the snug arms of the coated canvas jacket. B+
Unrelated to the app, I'm also questioning the Donna Karan bag, as it seems really mumsy and staid and 'St. John Knits' with these outfits? Maybe it's the pin + paracord, which I added. Maybe not? Anyhoo, it's in purgatory because it's not quite working for me and I have MANY bags.
I'm also iffy on the Vince pants, which makes me REAL sad. They're lightweight and long enough for me, which never happens. But they wrinkle so severely at the slightest touch, which makes them look cheap and sloppy. They were an outlet find so they weren't that pricey but do I need them? I dunno. I'm wary of getting rid of items during a time I can't replace them, so maybe "purgatory" while I figure it out.
Alright, so there you have it, Acloset review! Do you use Acloset or other apps? Share to us!

You know what they call me in the ancient legends on the Dalek home world? The Oncoming Storm.
You might have removed all your emotions, but I reckon right down deep in your DNA there’s one little spark left... and that’s fear. Doesn’t it just burn when you face me?"

Doctor started his life anew. Though he reclaimed his name after it was disowned by his War incarnation, he tried to distance himself from his past as the last remaining Time Lord in existence. He continued fighting injustice throughout time and space with steely determination while also remaining detached and brooding over his trauma. This incarnation may not have been among the longest in the totality of the Doctor's regeneration cycle, but marked a crucial period in the Doctor's life.

- Travels 100 years in the future, then 10,000 and finally 5,000,000,000 years.
- Rose claims she can go on countless journeys and arrive back in 10 seconds, but didn't either because the TARDIS malfunctioned or she just forget.
- Along with twelve of his past and future incarnations, he uses the TARDIS to freeze Gallifrey in time and seal it in a pocket dimension.
- Certain points in time are in flux, meaning somebody's existence in the future does not always ensure that undesirable outcomes will not happen.
- Means to take Rose home 12 hours after her departure, but messes up and takes her 12 months after she left.
- Takes Rose back to witness her father's death, then takes her back again thereby creating two sets of the Doctor and Rose in the same place in time. When Rose prevents her father's demise, the original pair disappear. This violation of time brings upon the Reapers to devour anyone in sight and turns the TARDIS into an empty shell. All of this is reversed when Rose's father follows out his death and lets himself get run over by the same car which had been forced into a perpetual loop by Rose's actions. Though the timeline is restored, miner changes from its first iteration remain.
- Chases a spacecraft to Earth and ends up weeks behind it when they land.

2023.06.03 16:33 ZukovG Affordable Fragrances
| Earlier today, I had the opportunity to visit a fragrance boutique called Glow Secret. It is located at two locations: Jamia Mall, 1st floor, shop F100, and Jubilee Exchange on Kaunda Street, shop #8. I have no connection with this shop and wanted to take a moment to recommend other perfume stores that offer excellent options at affordable prices. At Glow Secret, you'll find a wide range of perfumes that are clones, inspired by both niche and designer fragrances. Lattafa Khamrah Ksh.6,000. Great presentation. This is a gourmand and boozy fragrance. Totally unisex. My wife and I will enjoy this. Oud for Glory Ksh.3,500. This is a clone of Oud for greatness, and sauvage elixir. I have sauvage elixir and the similarities are very very close on the drydown. It is just linear. Afnan 9pm Ksh.5,500. Clone of JPG Ultra male. A bubble gum, and vanilla scent. Very sweet. This is amazing. Asad Ksh.3,500. This is a straight clone of sauvage elixir for the young man. Armaf Club de Nuit urban elixir Ksh. 7,200. This is a clone of dior sauvage edt. Fresh, soapy, airy fragrance. A fragrance for the fresh man. If you can find these else where at an even lower price go for them. 2023.06.03 16:27 Jeezir Issues looping through [EXCEL] data range when blank rows/cells are introduced. [VISIO]
I'm sure alot of users say this as well, but I do not mess with VBA/coding very much. I am writing code which will:
- Take entries from a spreadsheet and populate Visio Shapes in a specific x,y location
- Then connect the shapes with dynamic connectors based on info filled out by the user
The code that I have does accomplish this, however there is a specific scenario that seems to break it when I loop through the excel data.
After the shapes have been dropped into Visio, I then look at columns L (source connection) and B (destination connection) to see where I should glue the ends of the dynamic connector in Visio. This does work when the data is consistent (no gaps/blanks) between the start and end of the populated range. However, if there is a blank cell/row anywhere in the middle, I get an "Unexpected end of file" error.
Sub VisioNetworkAutomation() Dim ws As Worksheet Dim visApp As Visio.Application Dim visDoc As Visio.Document Dim visPage As Visio.Page Dim visStencil As Visio.Document Dim visShape As Visio.Shape Dim visConnector As Visio.Shape Dim boundingBox As Object Dim numberOfPages As Long Dim i As Long Dim deviceCountColumn As Long Dim lastDeviceRow As Long Dim endCell As Range Set ws = ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Network Architecture") ' Set your worksheet and the column number you want to check numberOfPages = ws.Range("B9") ' Determines number of pages entered by user ' Create a new Visio document Set visApp = New Visio.Application Set visDoc = visApp.Documents.Open("C:\_EAA Network Automation\EAA Network_Blank.vsdm") For i = 1 To numberOfPages ' Create Visio pages, then sets the name and background Set visPage = visDoc.Pages.Add visPage.Name = "Page-" & i visPage.BackPage = "Background-1" Next i Set visStencil = visApp.Documents.OpenEx("EAA.VSSX", visOpenDocked) ' Open the Basic Shapes stencil deviceCountColumn = 10 ' Column to check = J, Change this to the desired column number (1 for Column A, 2 for Column B, etc.) lastDeviceRow = ws.Cells(ws.Rows.Count, deviceCountColumn).End(xlUp).Row ' Find the last non-empty row in the column Set endCell = ws.Cells(lastDeviceRow, deviceCountColumn) ' Set end cell ranges Dim dataRange As Range Dim cell As Range Dim xCoord As Variant Dim yCoord As Variant Dim connectionTemplate Dim idMatch As Range Set dataRange = ws.Range(Range("J12"), Range(endCell.Address(0, 0))) 'Sets the range from J12 to last populated cell in J column ' Loop through the range and store the cell values in the array For Each cell In dataRange connectionTemplate = cell.Value ' Grabs the Connection Template of the current cell row xCoord = cell.Offset(0, 4).Value ' Grabs the x-coordinate of the current cell row yCoord = cell.Offset(0, 5).Value ' Grabs the y-coordinate of the current cell row If IsEmpty(cell) = False Then Set visShape = visDoc.Pages("Page-" & cell.Offset(0, 3).Value).Drop(visStencil.Masters(connectionTemplate), xCoord, yCoord) ' Drops current shape on current page visShape.Name = cell.Offset(0, -8).Value ' Write into Shapesheet data of shape visShape.Cells("Prop.Name.Value").FormulaU = Chr(34) & cell.Offset(0, -6) & Chr(34) 'Writes C4 to shapedata visShape.Cells("Prop.Model.Value").FormulaU = Chr(34) & cell.Offset(0, -5) & Chr(34) 'Writes D4 to shapedata visShape.Cells("Prop.IP.Value").FormulaU = Chr(34) & cell.Offset(0, -4) & Chr(34) 'Writes E4 to shapedata visShape.Cells("Prop.Subnet.Value").FormulaU = Chr(34) & cell.Offset(0, -3) & Chr(34) 'Writes F4 to shapedata visShape.Cells("Prop.Gateway.Value").FormulaU = Chr(34) & cell.Offset(0, -2) & Chr(34) 'Writes G4 to shapedata End If Next cell Set idRange = Range("L12:L51") For Each cell In idRange.SpecialCells(Type:=xlCellTypeConstants, Value:=xlNumbers) Set visConnector = visDoc.Pages("Page-" & cell.Offset(0, 1).Value).Drop(visApp.ConnectorToolDataObject, 0, 0) ' Connect the shapes (ID to Source) visConnector.Cells("BeginX").GlueTo visDoc.Pages("Page-" & cell.Offset(0, 4).Value).Shapes(cell.Offset(0, -10).Value).Cells("Connections.Left") visConnector.Cells("EndX").GlueTo visDoc.Pages("Page-" & cell.Offset(0, 1).Value).Shapes(cell.Value).Cells("Connections.Right") Next cell End Sub
The piece in question is the last For loop which checks all populated cells in idRange (column L).
Set idRange = Range("L12:L51") For Each cell In idRange.SpecialCells(Type:=xlCellTypeConstants, Value:=xlNumbers) Set visConnector = visDoc.Pages("Page-" & cell.Offset(0, 1).Value).Drop(visApp.ConnectorToolDataObject, 0, 0) ' Connect the shapes (ID to Source) visConnector.Cells("BeginX").GlueTo visDoc.Pages("Page-" & cell.Offset(0, 4).Value).Shapes(cell.Offset(0, -10).Value).Cells("Connections.Left") visConnector.Cells("EndX").GlueTo visDoc.Pages("Page-" & cell.Offset(0, 1).Value).Shapes(cell.Value).Cells("Connections.Right") Next cell
Again, when there are no breaks in data from cell to cell, the code runs fine. As soon as I introduce a blank, it fails.
I have added watches and troubleshot this extensively, and I can see after a blank cell, it cannot determine the id columns in excel (column L and B).
The files can be found here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1a_dJUVhRV8hTlQHQiDSxDoSd_pYYGiDU?usp=sharing The current state of the files will error out, as I have left row 19 blank. To see the file work, simply copy the contents of row 18 or 20, to row 19. Thanks for any assistance here.

2023.06.03 15:53 Maleficent-Act-4066 How to give up one’s life for another.
About 1year and 6 months ago, my Sister lost her 41 yr old daughter to cancer. Location Puerto Rico. She called for a family conference call. At the time she was taking care of my 90 yr old mother who is suffering with dementia. The call was to talk to the other 10 siblings to see if someone can go live with our mother for 6 months then after 6 months we were to move mom to the states to one of my sisters house. She needed to time away from mom to tend to the surviving family. At the time there were 2 sisters that were single and unemployed. But they refused to go to our mother and live with her. Seeing how it was for only 6 months I reluctantly volunteered. Which meant for me to give up my job and sell my two beater vehicles and all my possessions to be stored in a shipping container. What ever was left that did not fit I gave away. I left a job that only paid $45,000 a year but I was going to get a promotion that would raise my income to $55,000 a year. I talked to my boss he said he would hold position for the 6 months. Turns out after being with my mother for 2 months I gave a sigh of relief to my sister that I only had 4 more months to go. Which in response she tells me that mom can never fly due to her heart condition. This statement shattered any hope of me leaving and getting my life back. So she lied to me. Problem with being here with my mother, she can’t be left alone for more than 4 hours. Thus hurting my chances of getting a job. So here I am no income. After selling both of my vehicles the first one I go a lump sum but I used the money for tools. The second one I sold to my brother but he paid me in installments so to but a car here was out of the question. For 7 months I had no car, until that same brother who paid me in installments came to puerto Rico and bought a used car for the same price I sold him mine in cash and after two months he gave me the keys to use it while I am here. Sound good but the car he bought was a four door sedan Mitsubishi gallant it’s know for its break downs. The family pays me $25 a month and $140 to cut the grass. This is what they promised to pay me but only 4 out of the 10 honor our agreement. The work I used to do prepared me for the work that was needed to be done here at my mothers house which was building maintenance. Believe me after 9 years of no work being done at her house the knowledge came in handy. I have dealt with power outages that was caused by a truck and major repairs needed to be done to regain power. Which the family had no money to repair. I had to dip into my XRP savings to fix the problem I sold 4000 xrp to fix the damages. Mind you I have no way to replenish. Any ways I write this just to put it out there and a way not to fall into depression. Which there is lots more that I can not post but because I am a man no one cares. Every day I do something or create something to gain my sanity. I thought my self how to weld. I build things for escape. I raise chicken and build coops to escape as well. But the worry on how I will get the money for the feed worries me. I gave up my life and holding on to it by a thread. Lord God help me achieve what I need to.

2023.06.03 15:41 DeltaDerp Would it be okay to apply to the same location again after no job offer was given after the interview. One year passed.
Sometime April in 2022 I applied and interviewed at a nearby Chipotle. I had an open schedule but I think I did pretty bad because I stuttered a lot, wasn't prepared, and had no work experience. They said they would let me know in 24-48 hrs if I would be hired and if they didn't contact me that would mean I didn't get the job. I wasn't ever contacted, but wasn't explicitly denied either.
Oddly, on the taleo website thing with job opportunities, I was automatically being applied every month to the same location for like 5 months until June 2022, but I never got called in again. Eventually the automatic applications stopped.
Anyway, I kinda want to try to apply again, I don't really want to be on the line or have a customer facing role because social anxiety and I can't speak Spanish (there are a lot of Spanish speaking customers here), but I would really like to prep and cook, though I would try to cope as much as possible even if I was put on the line. Is it ok to apply again since its been over a year since I first applied?
It was an apprentice who interviewed me, and it would be pretty embarrassing to have him interview me again, so I'm wondering if apprentices move to other stores often. The store was relatively new, built sometime 2020-2021

2023.06.03 15:36 wibbleswibble Table design and access question (resampling)
Hello. I'm new to the field and am trying to understand the pros/cons of trade offs around a table structure I'm working on.
I am building infrastructure for storing wind speed measurements from custom made devices. Each time a device submits a meaurement, it contains data from two separte sensors A and B, the table structure looks (somewhat simplified) like this:
devices(id, name, location) measurements(id, device_id, measurement_a, measurement_b, measured_at)
Because of the variance in time between measurements, I resample the measurements into averages in 5 minute windows.
resampled_measurements(id, device_id, avg_measurement_a, avg_measurement_b, measured_at_5m)
In rough terms, I populate the resampled_measurements table by querying the measurements table for each 5 minute interval since last resample:
SELECT device_id, ROUND(AVG(measurement_a)::numeric, 2) as avg_measurement_a, ROUND(AVG(measurement_b)::numeric, 2) as avg_measurement_b, timestamp 'epoch' + CEIL(EXTRACT(epoch FROM measured_at)::decimal / (5 * 60)) * (5 * 60) * interval '1 second' as measured_at_5m FROM measurements WHERE measured_at > '2023-06-01 16:00:00' AND measured_at <= '2023-06-01 16:05:00' GROUP BY device_id, measured_at_5m ORDER BY measured_at_5m ASC
This finally brings me to the question:
In cases there are no measurements in the interval, then I'm not getting a record in the resampled_measurements table.
Is it better to:
A. Insert a row with zero values for the measurements in that case (for each of the potentially thousands of devices), or
B. Leave the table empty for that interval and join against a virtual table (think generate_series) when querying the table?
I guess the answer is "it depends", but I'm wondering if there are any general guidelines for how to think about this kind of thing and what people comfortable with the field would do.
Thanks for any input!

2023.06.03 15:02 GameraSpitfire Help noob build color grading/gaming pc
Hello, i would like to buy a computer, don't know much about it...
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I'll edit and do color grading on davinci resolve mainly, watch movies, playing games also.
Programs : Davinci Resolve, Adobe Lightroom
Games : Path of exile 2, xcom 2, wasteland 2, Elden Ring, Death Stranding, MTGA, Valorant, CS GO, Apex legends and a bunch of indies (darkest dungeon 2, dead cells, hades, hollow knight, binding of isaac, ftl...). A lot of games...
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
1500€, less if possible, can go up if needed. Was wondering about the 1250$ workstation (=1050€ in belgium) on the thread april best buy.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Whenever I can, not in a hurry. But the sooner the better
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower, keyboard, monitor (need one with good colors, not really high res or fps needed, can go up in my budget for good monitor)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Belgium
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Mouse (motospeed v18 hero leopard. Did get it cheap and never broke) Can consider buying a better one
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Not if not needed, really noob about computers...
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Would like a secondary internal disk to store rushes from movies i'm working on. ( A big one if possible)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
No, functional computer
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I have a copy of w10 on my 8 years old laptop, i don't know if i can go with this on the new computer... If not, i would like to have a copy, no preferences
Extra info or particulars:
Not doing 3d work on movies, but superposing video sources on davinci resolve can crash my actual computer... Is it possible to stream with a computer like I ask or is it a different build needed? I don't know much in computer... Maybe you can advice me on the "april best buy" that suits me... Will the computer be upgradable/future proof?
Thanks in advance for your consideration

Could anyone advice me what I am doing wrong with me code? It looks like my code blurs original image, however when it is ran in check50, nothing comes back as correct, and all the values are very irrelevant from what is expected.

2023.06.03 14:56 TiffanyBlue0ABAB5 Sometimes the right brush helps (journey from dry brittle hair to pretty darn decent hair)
Like many of you here on this sub, and other hair care subs, I had an issue with my hair and couldn't resolve it. I tried multiple solutions and finally found one that worked for me and I hope this can help you.
My hair: Type 1B or 1C when it's shorter and 2B when it's longer (past shoulder length). It is greying around the temples and underneath. I had some wonderful highlights done which were screwed up when my colorist called out sick and the salon felt comfortable allowing someone else to do my next session. My hair felt like doll's hair - super stiff and plasticky. They tried to fix it in house, but couldn't. All my money was refunded and then the salon asked me to not return after they screwed it up so bad. I had to cut off over 10 inches. Found out later they allowed the receptionist to apply and rinse out my toner and hair treatment while the colorist took a trip to Starbucks for a Frappuccino, I didn't know at the time, but found out after the damage was done. Right now it finally made it passed 'bob' length and almost to my shoulders.
Covering the grey: After cutting off all my hair after that disaster of a color mishaps, I decided to go back to my natural hair color while growing out, grey hair and all. As it grew, I would get trimmed off what remained of the hair dye/colored part and really tried to take care of it. When it finally got to bob length I decided to go back in to get the roots/grey covered up. After two different sessions of the colorist 'warming up' my color, which I never asked for, I decided to just do my grey areas at home on with a Demi permanent color about every 2 months on my roots and just the grey area.
Problem with the ends: I was still having a LOT of issues with the ends of my hair though - despite all the deep conditioning masks, using hair oils, etc, it just was SO brittle and dry on the ends only. I've always had a super oily scalp and dry ends. I made the mistake of listening to advice from a hairstyling YouTuber and spent a waste of money on Redken's Volume Injecting Shampoo (seriously, if you have medium or thick hair, avoid....this guy said to use it on medium hair). Same stylist said to use a leave-in condition, which actually did help, but not the brand he recommended. My ends were just SO tangled and dry.
How I tested and failed and solved this issue: - I have oily roots. As much hate as there is for sulfates, my roots need sulfates. I always always shampoo twice. I started to use a sulfate shampoo first to really clean my scalp and shampoo with a non-sulfate shampoo second. If my hair is really greasy or oily, I'll shampoo twice with the sulfate shampoo.
- Condition in the shower but I also use a spray leave in conditioner after it's towel dried. I found less is more for my hair overall, BUT I do spray extra on the part of my ends that tangle. I found using a gentle vent brush to go through my hair afterwards helps distribute.
- Blow dry spray is key - again, I found out through trial and error that I don't need a lot, just a good light mist. I used to air dry my hair ALL the time, but it got thicker and more tangled when I did this and I could tell my hair shaft was swelling up and staying that way. I found it was more damaged - plus it takes over two hours to air dry and I cannot show up to work with sopping wet hair. If I shower at night, I find this is okay, but I try not to wash my hair at night. There are some of these combined with leave-in conditioners that work well for my hair too.
-
THE BIGGEST CHANGE - using the right brush to blow dry. I used to just use a flat vented brush or a paddle brush while blowdrying my hair. It looked just fine, but it didn't have a lot of movement and still felt stiff regardless of what products I put in my hair. Shifting back to a rounded blow dry brush was the biggest game changer. I HATE using it and I'm going to state that. My arms get tired, I start sweating while using it because my hair is thick and it takes effort, I have to work in sections, but damn it makes my hair smoother and shinier and my hair moves! I can run my fingers through my hair without tangles and it feels good. I only blow dry and style on the day I shampoo and wash my hair. I don't use heat on the other days, I just adjust how I wear my hair that day.
Caveat - I don't like that massive one-step hair dryeround brush that is all the rage a few years ago. I found that particular tool did way too much damage to my hair because it seems to be hotter. Just a plain hand-held round brush in the largest barrel for your hair if I plan to wear it close to straight. There are a few smaller barrel ones that are meant for styling only in a lower heat setting, I use those at the end only, not for drying my hair.
- Hair oil - Using hair oil on my ends after blowdrying and using what little bit is left on my ends to go over my baby hairs up front has made a difference. I also put a bit of hair oil on my ends only about an hour before bed. I don't use a lot, just enough to prevent drying out.
- Hair oil before shampooing or overnight. I've read this on this sub and others and it actually works wonders. I use the OGX extra strength coconut miracle oil for this, but I'm sure there are others. I've used the Kerasate and even Argan oil. I prefer the coconut one for the price point. Either 2 hours before shampooing, best over the weekend, or the night before, put a lot of oil in your hair on the mids and ends. If doing the night before, either be prepared to change your pillowcase in the morning, or sleep with a sleep cap. When shampooing out, you do need a sulfate shampoo or clarifying shampoo to help wash off the excess oils for the first shampoo. Doing this once a week has really helped.
- Slumber cap. This has helped tremendously. There are loads on Etsy and amazon. I have a favorite I found off
Etsy (as an example only) because I like it's adjustable. You can look and choose one for your head and hair length. I cannot speak enough how much a silk or satin bonnet for sleeping has helped with my hair health.
- Limit dry shampoo. Since I have oily roots, I can maybe go three days before I have to shampoo again, even using dry shampoo.
My favorite products that have worked for me during all this. They do range in price point and I use drugstore and higher end.
Shampoo: Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two
John Frieda Blue Crush for Brunettes <- only when my hair starts getting brassy
Kristen Ess Signature Shampoo
Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle
Redken Hair Cleansing Cream <- omg, HG. I bought the mini size to try and a month later I still have product in it, you DON'T need a lot. Worth it.
L'Oreal Ever Pure Bond Strengthening Shampoo <- new find, very happy with this so far
Kerastase Bain Satin 2 <- I use this mostly in the winter
Conditioner: Matching conditioners to John Frieda products
Kerastase Nutritive Masquintese irisome <- have purchased for over 6 years. You only need a half walnut size glop even with longer hair. Less is more.
Hask conditioners in those packets you get at CVS/Walgreen. I can usually get two uses out of each packet
Nexxus conditioners in those packets, I like those too. Basically any deep conditioning drug store packets, even the keratin ones I find are good for a once a week or once a month deep conditioner
Dry shampoo: Eva NYC Freshen Up <- have repurchased for years. I have brown hair and it doesn't leave white marks
Not Your Mother's Clean Freak
Leave in conditioneblow dry spray: It's a 10 Miracle Silk Leave in
L'Oreal Ever Pure 21-in-1 color caring spray <- new find, I love this one
Hair Oils: Verb Ghost Oil
Olaplex No.7
OGX coconut miracle oil
Kerastase Elixir Ultime <- lasts forever HG
Paul Mitchell Smoothing super skinny serum
Hask Argan Oil
Hair Cream: Olaplex No. 6 (I mix this with the Paul Mitchell skinny serum sometimes, it's fabulous)
Brushes: Honestly, they are all Conair brand from Target. My oldest one is hitting 6 years.
Round brush with hot air tool (doesn't get super hot for styling only): Conair Infiniti Pro
Covering up those grey hairs without resorting to box dye: Moroconnoil Color Conditioner in Cocoa (there are other shades) - use a hair color brush to apply to grey. Leave on about 15 minutes then add more to the rest of the hair to even out the color. The grey turns more of a light blondish color, but blends well.
Christophe Robin Shade Mask in Ash Brown - this does ashy brown SO well, but damn it's expensive.
John Frida's Brilliant Brunette Collection. Great if you want to go a bit deeper. Again, apply to the roots first and wait, then work through the rest of the hair.
Color Wow Root Cover Up - okay, I made fun of this at first but it's become a favorite now. If I pull my hair back and got some grey poking through around where my hair meets the top of my ears or want to tidy up the part in my hair, this stuff works great. AND it sticks around if you don't shampoo the next day. Once you get the hang of how to apply it, you can do it fast and it honestly does look pretty natural.
Hope all this help you on your hair journey. My goal is to grow it back to bra strap length. Since we're going to be moving in a few months I'm putting off going to a salon for color touch up and wait until we get to our new location.

2023.06.03 14:41 X_Marcie_X Beware the Birchwood-Creeper
I grew up within a small village on the edge of a relatively small but still thick and often dark forest under the hand of my late grandfather. For the sake of privacy, I wont share neither his name nor my own. The exact location of where we live also sadly does not matter for reasons that will hopefully be apparent later as I go on.
After my supposed "father" left us behind and my mother died during childbirth, my grandfather took me in and raised me. I've known him my entire life because of this and I came to know him as a strict, reclusive but fair man who cares more than he would like to let on to.
At night, he would often call me to the warm fireplace within our livingroom to tell me a new horror story. He did this ever since I was a small child and while, for some, this may Sound questionable, I'm certain that this is where my love and interest for all things creepy originates from.
As a child, his stories would terrify me and haunt my dreams, centering around strange and malicious entities that stalk you from within the darkness around you until it is time for them to make their move and drag you to wherever they came from. My grandfather would often tell me the same collection of stories, but always adding more details as I got older and older. As a child, I sometimes tried to avoid listening to his stories, but he insisted that I would have to hear them. Later, I began to doubt his stories but he insisted that they where true, much to my annoyance. Back then, I did not know how right he truly was.
The story I remember the most vividly is that of an entity called the "Birchwood-Creeper". For some context on the name, we unofficially refer to our local forest as the "Birchwoods" due to the abundance of beautiful birchtrees that make up most of the forest. The "Birchwood-Creeper" is an ancient local folktale, speaking of an entity residing in our forest.
According to my grandfather, the Birchwood-Creeper is a tall, lanky humanoid creature with leathery skin as pale as chalk draped tightly around long, thin bones. It's arms and legs are almost as long as an average person can be tall, and it's fingers end in razorsharp claws. It's feet end in sharp talons and upon it's neck sits the featherless head of an owl, complete with soulless, black eyes as dark as the deepest void. It blends in with the sorrounding birchtrees and can move at unseen speed and nearly without just the slightest sound as it stalks it's chosen prey throughout the months to come before finally dragging them into the deepest parts of the forest.
Admittedly, the details for his story are oddly specific and precise, which is why I first started to doubt my grandfather's stories when I got older. But he promised he would reveal everything to me once, in his own words, the time was right. I did not know what He meant by that and I doubt i'll ever learn, as he died three years ago due to a heart-failure while I was away for the weekend. He died and his secrets died with him.
After his death, I stayed in the Village for a few years to follow, beginning to drown my grief from his loss within criminology research, with cases of disappearances especially peeking my interest. And as I learned during my research, there where a lot of known disappearances, both recent and decades ago, within and around Birchwood and my village.
Growing curious, I started to notice that I never actually went into the woods and decided that it would be a fun adventure to just go into the forest and explore. Of course, I wasnt really expecting to encounter or find any missing people or paranormal entities within. Planning to be back by daylight, I only took a small backpack with me, carrying a small knife, a flashlight, some food and some water. I also decided to leave my phone at home, as I wanted to retreat, still griefing, and didnt really want to be disturbed during my trip. And with everything packed up, I ventured into the woods as soon as sun began to set.
I wandered for hours, coming across various areas within the Birchwoods that seemed almost totally undisturbed by humans, almost making me question wether I was the first person to venture to them. The most interesting sight for me thus far, however, was a large boulder with deep scratchmarks within it. At the time, I simply chalked it up to a deer attempting to either sharpen or shorten their antlers.
For most of my time, I was undisturbed. The cries of owls nearby keeping me company as I ventured forward, enjoying the trip more than I honestly thought I would. As I kept walking, I couldnt help myself but joke about how the supposed owls may just be the faint cries of the Birchwood-Creeper my grandfather told me about. And although I almost laughed out loud a few times, these jokes brought valuable memories back to me.
Sadly, all the joy was interrupted when I came across a disemboweled deer that, somehow, was hanging on a taller tree by it's antlers. I will spare you the gruesome details, but the animal was half-eaten and almost left there as a trophy of some sort. It first, I was horrified, then more confused. There where no animals in these woods that could have done this, and even for a human this would have been hard to position!
Ultimately, I decided to make a report to a local wildlife protection service once I got home, and continued onward for the time being. I was slightly on edge now, confused as I tried to wrap my head around how what I found would be possible. It was almost like a silent jumpscare to me and now that im writing this, im left to wonder why I didnt see it sooner from afar.
Seeing a deer, even if dead, however calmed my nerves when I started to hear fallen branches break and plants move into another around me as I continues my path forward. The deer was the prove that there are animals in this forest, and so where the constant cries of the owls, and that put me at ease when the sorrounding sounds startled me. And suddenly, the noises found an end.
It was silent. There was nothing. No insects chirping in the grass, no branches cracking, not even a squirrel jumping between trees. It was as if everything but me either died in an instant or hid itself as best as possible to avoid such a fate. Then, again, the silence was broken by the cry of an owl. An owl, that sounded though as if it was sitting right next to me! Yet when I looked around, I saw nothing but a thick cluster of trees around me. And, besides the occasional cry of the owl, the silence persisted. I grabbed my knife, even if just for comfort, and continued onward. I do not know why, but continueing deeper into the forst felt both right and wrong at the same time, as if something wanted me to go further and further while something made me feel like as if I should have run home long ago. The cries of the owls persisted, feeling as if following me. I did no longer feel alone. I felt watched, I felt followed. And I was hoping it was just the owl. And to some extend, I was right.
My adventure came to an end as I came across a large, thick tree unlike any other I came across within this forest. It was taller than anything else within these woods, thicker than any birchtree I've come across. And for a lack of a better description, it felt wrong. There was something off about this tree, something foul and dark. Something sinister and malicious.
The cries of the owls fell silent, leaving me alone with what I came across. I do not know what compelled me to do so, but I looked at the knife within my hands and began to cut off a tiny piece of bark from the tree. It came off easily, as if rotten away, and smelled terrible. And I learned where the smell came from. Within the tree, somehow, a decomposing human hand was sitting within a tiny hole. The hand appeared loose, yet almost as if this hole was made specifically for it! I turned my gaze away and almost vomited, unable to handle what I just came across as the knife dropped out of my hands. The feeling of being watched grew more intensely as I trembled in shock, before finally gaining my composure. I took a deep breath, the foul smell entering my nostrils, and turned around to once again face what I came across. What I saw was right. A severed and decomposing human hand within the giant, rotting birchtree, somehow beneath it's bark. Then, the familiar cries of the owls came onto me again, sounding as if sitting right above me on the tree. I looked up, somehow hoping for answers or comfort from the bird. But all I received was shock.
Within the branches of the tree, looking directly at me, the creature my grandfather described to me so often, sat gently nesting above me. It was almost positioned like a spider of sorts, it's long limbs all grabbing onto a different branch. It's head moved in all sorts of positions as the creature slowly crawled around the branches above me, approaching me. I was in shock. I couldnt move, couldnt scream. The creature my grandfather told me about, warned me about, was despite my doubts real and it's black, empty eyes where staring directly at me!
Finally breaking my fear, I started to run deep into the forest and back the way I came from! Looking over my shoulder for just a second, I could see the creature stare at me, then leap off of the rotten tree and land onto the floor several feet away on all fours before jumping up into the other trees, following me from above. I ran as fast as I could, almost tripping over roots and rocks as I kept my eyes forward. I attempted to avoid gazing upwards, scared of seeing the creature jump at me at any moment if I do. But I didnt have to look up just to see it. It was faster than me, far more agile. And it got past me. I almost ran straight into it as I made my way through the birchtrees, the creature's stature and skin camouflaging it almost perfectly. I quickly turned sideways, narrowly avoiding it's grasp as I heard it make the familiar cry of an owl once more. The chase had not ended, for neither of us.
I do not know how I made it, but somehow I got out of the forest and back to the village. I dared to turn around one more time as I came into the light of a street lamp, glaring in fear at the edge of the forest I ran out of just mere seconds ago. It was standing there. The Birchwood-Creeper was standing there, almost hidden within the trees and the shadows but barely visible. It stared at me, the dark and empty eyes bleeding shadows darker than the darkness of the night itself. For a second, I thought myself safe underneath the streetlight. Then, I remembered the disappearances and how they werent limited to just the forest itself. I slowly stepped backwards, attempting to catch my breath before running home as fast as I can. The creature slowly stepped out of the darkness shrouding it and I began to run once more.
I made it home, unlocked my door, threw myself in and locked it as fast as I could. I ran around the house, making sure to lock every door and every window on both levels. While doing so, I caught glimpses of the creature through my windows every now and then. Finally, when I was done, I retreated myself into by bedroom on the upper level and, much like I did as a child, hid myself under my blanket. Everything grew silent and, after a while, I decided to take a slow look out of my window. The creature was standing there, looking directly at me. Then, it slowly dissappeared back into the woods. I sighed in relief, thinking I escaped it, but did not dare to sleep the following three days.
I decided to not share this story with any locals as of yet, due to not having any evidence. I dont expect they'll believe me when I tell them that a local folktale is actually true. So I just sat around, feeling helpless and useless. Occasionally, I would catch glimpses of the Birchwood-Creeper again. I would see it standing at the edge of the forest, observing me. Another time, while getting a few things from my local grocery store, I could see it staring at me within a dark alleyway. One time, I even awoke at the middle of the night to see it hang on my bedroom window, staring through it directly at me!
I would find scratchmarks on the outside if my walls, windows and doors and occasionally hear the familiar cry of what I just assumed to be a regular owl. I plan on moving out of my area as soon as I can afford it, but I do not know how much this will help. I feel that any area that has birchtrees and forests may be within this being's territory. If there even is just one of them. I do not know how far I actually have to run to be safe, nor do I know if I can ever feel comfort at the howls of an owl ever again. What is worse is that it doesnt just have one victim at any given time. Local news reported last week about a school a few miles away that was enclosed within a thick metal fence. Apparently, someone or something slashed itself through that fence and since then, two children have gone missing.
I am sorry for ever doubting my grandfather and I deeply hope that no one who is reading this has to suffer at the hands of this creature.

2023.06.03 14:14 cowdungeater Repost: Successful isolation of Claviceps purpurea/Ergot
| I am reposting here as I have some troubles with TheeHive's spam filter. Hope it works best! As announced in a previous comment, here is how I isolated mycelium from ergot/Claviceps purpurea. So! Onto the process. First of all, I want to say that this was realised thanks to my access to a commercial laboratoray, with a laminar flowhood and antibiotic containing agar plates. However, I do not believe it to be impossible to do it in a more amateur setting. I had begun to do that, but got access to this marvel of microbiology, so I figured I might as well spare myself the hassle. The sclerotia were harvested in 2021 and 2022 on 6 different locations. I ended up using only 2 strains collected in 2022, but whatever. They were stored in the refrigerator for later use. The outside of the sclerotia was cleaned with 5% bleach and a few drops of tween20 (any detergent will do) for 5 minutes in order to limit the amount of contamination brought onto agar, the detergent helping to reach small crevices. The sclerotia where then soaked in distilled water for 3 hours and then cut in disks with a sterile scalpel blade. At first, I placed this disks on YEB medium, but that didn't prove very effective, ergot doesn't like this medium that much (as can be seen on first photo) so I then switched to PDA, which yielded the beautiful fluffy mycelium that you can see on the 2 last photos. The plates you can see on these photos are the result of the third transfer of clean mycelium onto fresh plate, in order to get any bacteria/spores out of the culture. All medium contained Rifampicin and Streptomycin at a concentration of 100 µM both. I still got a few contamination by molds, strangely mostly penicillium. So there it is, this was my personal experiment. Both plates were identified by 18S rRNA sequencing and were confirmed as C. purpurea. Any questions, remarks? Feel free to interact! Photo 1: Initial culture on YEB medium. You can kinda see the black fragments of sclerotia Photo 2: Clean mycelium on Potato Dextrose agar Photo 3: Again, other plate of PDA and mycelium. submitted by cowdungeater to bizzybees [link] [comments] |
