2023.05.28 23:12 SnooTomatoes8935 9km runs with 5km Plan by coach Jeff

Im currently through a bit more than half the 5km plan with coach jeff. my goal is first to run 5k in a certain time, then build up to running 5k in a shorter time and then, i will see.
my plan was for 13 weeks and im not at week seven. on week 5 the long run was a bit over 6km. i was suprised because thats more than the 5km goal, but well, why not. week 6 then proposed a 8km run and next sunday i will face a 9km run according to my plan. but why? my goal for now is 5km. why does the plan tell me to run 9km. i get, that its probably good to be able to run a little more than 5km, but 9km? why does the plan suggest such runs?

2023.05.28 21:17 Worried_Reality_9045 This Season lacked catharsis

The season definitely needed 10 episodes and all of the survivors of the crash having actual breakdowns like Tai but more tailored to their situations. This could have been done with flashbacks or interactions with one another. They should have been grappling with their secrets at the cult compound. Some of them should have admitted they loved it when they only had to worry about hunting for their next meal. A discussion contrasting their current lives with that of the wilderness was warranted.
The writers really wasted the therapy and Russian roulette drink scenes. It could have been a direct catalyst for the hunt as they got in touch with their emotions and traded stories like war vets. Shauna’s goat storyline was a good starter but everyone else didn’t have much to do. Tai and Nat the most compelling characters were left to the wayside. The audience wasn’t even sure if Tai was disassociating at times or not. Nat essentially became meeker with few exceptions.
Nat should have proved why she was Antler Queen by taking the reins. Nat should have pushed back on Lottie’s spiral with some light violence and gotten them to confess and relive their trauma. Lottie should have been gotten revenge for her beating in the wilderness. It should have been a visceral and animalistic episode.
Shauna’s chop shop scene and Tai causing the car accident that put her wife on life support were good examples for where the show should have been heading: the documentation of the downward spirals of all these traumatized women. Unfortunately filler storylines of characters like Lisa, Callie, and Jeff really dampened the audience’s ability to relate and empathize to these flawed damaged women. For example Van in her youth began as a fan favorite. Her adult version offered nothing to temper the hate young Van eventually gets as she becomes more jaded and ruthless in the wilderness. Adult Van could have given the audience an explanation for how the woods changed her by stealing her innocence and how she pushed people away when they returned to civilization. Adult Van could have enlightened us on how she felt drained caring for another person while her needs and wants went neglected. She could blame Tai for not going to college herself and express jealousy at her success.
This season should have upped the ante emotionally but it fell flat after some good highs in storytelling: Shauna’s pregnancy fever dream and death of her baby, Crystal’s fall, and Javi’s death. But was it the acting in some episodes and scenes that failed or the writing? For instance if we really dissect the chop shop scene with Shauna it’s still kind of weak because she did seem more afraid than excited. (Nat/ Juliette definitely would have pulled that off better.) Directly after her getting her van at gun point what happens to Shauna? Not a thing really. She lies to her spouse Jeff who seems more fleshed out and funny than her. Unfortunately there were too many scenes with Shauna and the other adults that go no where, didn’t further the plot, or give us any insight on their head space.
The youth timeline is superior but it was also rushed in the last three episodes skimping on the quandaries of choosing to hunt down and actually kill and eat another person. Coach Ben as an adult among children should have always been the voice of reason but they made him a coward. If he did indeed burned down the cabin with the team in it he’ll deserve no sympathy because he made himself a threat. That would be a shame because he’s the last human being among them.

Ball State has been pretty consistent, with 26 of their 40 seasons since 1983 having 5+ wins. 4 conference titles is also not bad—3 came between 1989-96, arguably Ball State’s peak with 7 of those 8 years falling into the top 13 seasons in the chart above. It took them 46 years to win their first bowl game, failing on the first 7 tries before finally winning in 2020! Ball State’s 2 consensus All-Americans? 1 person—Brad Maynard, punter. Maynard averaged 46.5 and 45.8 yards per punt in 1995 and 1996, respectively. He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1997 NFL Draft, and would go on to be the Bears’ punter from 2001-10.

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 1999 (0-11 overall, 0-8 MAC)
While the world worried about the Y2K meltdown, Ball State worried about their program melting down. Going just 1-21 from 1998-99, 2 of their 3 worst seasons on this list, the program reached lows it had never seen. Coach Bill Lynch was an Indiana die-hard—he was born in Indianapolis, went to Butler, and since starting his coaching career in 1977, has only spent 2 years coaching outside the state of Indiana. This was Lynch’s 5th season with Ball State. While they weren’t getting manhandled (only one 30+ point loss) like some winless teams have, they weren’t particularly close to getting a win either (only 1 one-possession loss). They averaged 14.3 PPG while giving up 32.8 PPG, and were my 2nd worst team in the nation. Kicker Thomas Pucke was impressively inept, hitting just 2 of 8 FGs. He managed to hang around for 2 more years and convert 6 of 15 for a 4 year total of 12/31 on FGs for a 38.7 FG%.
5. 2012 (9-4 overall, 6-2 MAC)
The Ball State Football youtube channel put out a fantastic 15 minute recap of the 2012 season. Coming off a 6-6 year, there was momentum heading into 2012, but uncertainty with losing their top 2 WRs and an unproven defense. The year started with a bang, recording a school record 36 first downs against Eastern Michigan in a season-opening 37-26 win. Indiana took a 39-38 lead with 50 seconds to go in week 3—just enough time for QB Keith Wenning and kicker Steven Schott, who hit a 42 yard FG as time expired for the 41-39 Ball State win. Ball State got their second win over a Power 6 opponent the following week, beating South Florida 31-27 on another late win, this time Wenning to WR Willie Snead. After going back and forth with MAC competition, 6-3 Ball State headed to the Glass Bowl on election night to face #23 Toledo. Ball State rose to the occasion with another last minute TD to win 34-27. A 52-27 win over formerly-ranked Ohio, who had beaten Penn State to start the year, proved even more impressive. Ball State finished the regular season 9-3, with a loss to C-USA runner-up Blake Bortles and UCF in the bowl.
Ball State led the MAC with 15 all-conference selections. QB Keith Wenning threw for 3095 yards, with 24 TD and 10 INT, earning 2nd Team All-MAC. RB Jahwan Edwards had a monster year with 1410 rushing yards and 14 TD on 6.1 YPC, but only made 3rd team in a stacked MAC RB class. WRs Willie Snead, Jamill Smith, and TE Zane Fakes were all 1st Team MAC. Kicker Steven Schott was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist, going 25/32 on FGs, and punter Scott Kovanda was a Ray Guy Award finalist.
4. 1988 (8-3 overall, 5-3 MAC)
While 2012 was an offensive explosion, 1988 was about defense, boasting one of the best in the country. 1988 Ball State gave up just 15.5 PPG, while scoring 26.0 PPG. After a 7-1 (5-1 MAC) start, Ball State played Western Michigan (7-1, 5-0) for first place in the conference. Western Michigan took it in a 16-13 dogfight, and it wouldn’t matter much anyway, as Ball State dropped their last conference game 25-27 to Ohio. Back then, Ball State had an annual rivalry against Indiana State for the Blue Key Victory Bell, and the Cardinals got revenge for ISU’s 24-23 upset the year prior, winning 24-10. The most points Ball State gave up all season was just 27, and held opponents to 20 or less in every other game.
3. 2013 (10-3 overall, 7-1 MAC)
Picking up where we left off in 2012, Ball State returned Wenning, Edwards, Snead, Fakes, so this team had a lot of potential. Early wins included 31-24 over traditional MAC power Toledo, and 48-27 over Virginia, who had given up just 16 points or less in 3 of their first 4 games. Ball State lived up to the hype—and then some. Blowout wins over Western Michigan, Akron, and Central Michigan took them all the way to 8-1, setting up a matchup with 9-0 #20 Northern Illinois in the premier MAC game of the season. The winner would clinch a spot in the MAC title game, Ball State looking for their first title in 17 years. They went back and forth—deadlocked at 27-27 with 6 minutes left, NIU QB Jordan Lynch fired a 36 yard TD to take the lead, and a few garbage time scores gave NIU a nice looking 48-27 victory that was much closer than the score suggested. Ball State took out their anger on a hapless 0-11 Miami (OH) team to end the year, winning 55-14. Still looking for their first bowl win ever, they came as close as they’ve ever come, giving up a TD with 30 seconds left to lose 23-20 to Arkansas State. Still—an insane year for Ball State, winning 10+ games for just the 3rd time in school history. QB Keith Wenning threw for 4148 yards 35 TD 7 INT, ranking 6th in the nation in passing yards and TDs. RB Jahwan Edwards had his 2nd of 3 1000+ yard seasons, going for 1110 and 14 TD. He’d finish his career as Ball State’s all-time leading rusher a year later with 4558 yards and 51 TD. WR Willie Snead had the capstone of his college career with 106 catches for 1516 yards and 15 TD, ranking 3rd in the NCAA in receiving yards and TD. The 6’3 228 lb Jordan Williams proved to be a very good WR2 with 1000+ receiving yards, and would go on to have 200 catches for 2723 yards and 23 TD in his career, top 6 in school history in all of those categories. Wenning was a 6th round NFL Draft selection, and Snead went on to have a solid NFL career.
2. 2008 (12-2 overall, 8-0 MAC)
The 2008 team took the nation by storm. Ball State returned their all-conference QB, WR, TE, and 8 starters on defense from a 7 win team the previous season. Right away, with a week 2 35-23 win over Navy, they proved the prevous season’s win over them wasn’t a fluke. 2 weeks later, they’d make history, beating Indiana 42-20 in the program’s first ever win over a BCS team. Did they stop there? Nope. 3 weeks later they were 7-0, and #22 in the country. This was a great year for non-BCS teams, with Boise State and Utah also going unbeaten in the regular season. The beatings continued, as Ball State kept surprising everyone—38-16 over Eastern Michigan, 45-14 over NIU. Late in the year, #16 9-0 Ball State faced their toughest test of the season, heading north to play 8-2 preseason conference favorite Central Michigan. Down 7 points in the 4th quarter, QB Nate Davis guided the Cardinals back to a 31-24 lead, and a late interception sealed the deal. Ball State still hadn’t secured the MAC title game until the final week, where they beat 9-2 Western Michigan 45-22. Into the MAC championship we go. #12 Ball State was an overwhelming 15 point favorite over 7-5 Buffalo, who was just happy to be there. Ball State’s dream matchup quickly turned into a nightmare. Buffalo had 92 and 74 yard fumble returns for TDs, cruising to a 42-24 upset victory in which they were outgained by 200+ yards. Brady Hoke took the job at San Diego State, and a dejected interim-coached team got blown out 45-14 by Tulsa in the bowl.
QB Nate Davis, the original 2-gloved QB before Teddy “2 glove” Bridgewater was a thing, completed his illustrious college career, throwing for 3591 yards 26 TD 8 INT, leading the MAC in passer rating for the 3rd straight year, and winning 2008 MAC OPOTY. The 5’6 184 lb RB MiQuale Lewis was pound-for-pound one of the best players in college football, rushing for 1736 yards and 22 TD on 5.4 YPC, also racking up 325 receiving yards, ranking 2nd in the nation in yards from scrimmage and 1st in TDs. TE Darius Hill completed his career as one of the best TEs in MAC history, catching 40 passes for 670 yards and 7 TD to finish his career with 2473 yards and 31 TD. Unfortunately, WR Dante Love’s career came to an end 4 games into the season, one of Ball State’s best ever wideouts who caught 100 passes for 1398 yards and 10 TD in 2007. It was an amazing year for Ball State—but no hardware to show for it.
1. 2020 (7-1 overall, 5-1 MAC)
2008, or 2020 Ball State, who was better? The Ball State youtube channel(s) seriously make some of the best season recap videos of any school. After an opening 31-38 loss at Miami (OH), they were perfect the rest of the way. A 1-yard rushing TD with 6 seconds left secured a 38-31 win over Eastern Michigan to improve to 1-1. 2 weeks later, a 27-24 upset over Toledo improved them to 3-1. It was still a long season ahead with just a MAC schedule in a covid-shortened season, with the toughest games yet to come. A 45-20 road win over 3-1 Central Michigan thanks to 5 TD from QB Drew Plitt improved Ball State to 4-1, with 1 regular season game to go. This is where the 2020 team separated themselves from all other Ball State teams. Facing 4-1 Western Michigan with the winner going to the MAC championship game, Ball State was down 27-13 at the start of the 4th. After a 17-0 point 4th quarter, they had the lead with just seconds to go. Western Michigan tossing laterals around…OH THE ENTIRE BALL STATE TEAM IS ON THE FIELD!! And Western Michigan scores for the win!! Unbelievable!! It turns out though, one of the laterals was forward, and the refs award Ball State the victory. They go to the MAC championship game at 5-1!
Remember how 2008 Ball State came into the game 15 point favorites against Buffalo and lost? This time, the roles were reversed. Ball State came into the 2020 championship as 13 point underdogs to 5-0 Buffalo. And just like 2008, David slaid Goliath. Ball State took the MAC Championship 38-28, their first since 1996. But still, people hadn’t caught on. Ball State entered the Arizona Bowl as 6.5 point underdogs to #23 San Jose State. 35 minutes of game time later, and Ball State was up 34-0. When the final whistle sounded on a 34-13 bowl victory, it was the FIRST BOWL WIN IN BALL STATE HISTORY! While 2008 was a great year, 2020 takes the cake because they completed the quest of winning a conference title and bowl game. LB Brandon Martin was the MAC DPOTY, leading the conference in tackles with 90.

5th Quarter

Agree with Ball State’s ranking, ahead of in-state rival Indiana? What do you think of their program? Do you remember their 2008 and 2020 seasons?

2023.05.28 19:39 j1gs4vv Do you guys have anything youre hoping to see explored more in the coming seasons?:)

Personally, I would really like to see what home life was like while the girls were lost in the wild. What were the search efforts like? Did anyones parents ever give up hope on finding them? What about Akilah’s nephew and Coach Ben’s boyfriend! And Lottie’s parents especially, but everyone elses families as well! Did any of them keep searching and hoping? I just hope this kind of stuff is explored more in the future, even if just briefly. The only parents of the teens we have really gotten to see are Jackie’s in the dinner scenes with adult Shauna and Jeff.

2023.05.28 19:31 clayfu [Holmes] 'The most underrated player in the league': How Celtics star Derrick White ascended to Game 6 savior

https://www.espn.com/nba/insidestory/_/id/37746432/the-most-underrated-player-league-how-celtics-star-derrick-white-ascended-game-6-savior
IN APRIL 2012, a man by the name of Jeff Culver changed the course of White's life. Culver had previously recruited the guard to an NAIA school, Johnson & Wales, and had then become the head coach at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, a Division II program. And he asked White to join him.
But there was a catch: Culver's offer came late in the recruiting process, so all he could give White was a partial scholarship with a $3,000 room stipend toward housing; White and his father took out a $17,000 loan to cover the rest. White wore No. 14, a reference to all the schools in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference that didn't recruit him, and, before games, he'd remind himself why he wore it: "They said I wasn't good enough."
Even then, his prospects seemed uncertain, and on the night of the 2017 NBA draft, White's parents held what they deemed a "graduation party" at a friend's house, just in case White wasn't selected. The Spurs drafted him 29th overall in the first round, making him the first former Division II player drafted since Ronald Murray in 2002 and the first in the league since Ben Wallace retired in 2012. One Western Conference front-office executive noted the Spurs were likely the only team in the past 25 years to draft a player who would come into the NBA with student loan debt.
White was just one role-player addition who has paid dividends. Before acquiring White, the Celtics had traded for veteran big man Al Horford In June 2021. After trading for White, Stevens acquired another veteran guard, Malcolm Brogdon, in July 2022. Both Brogdon and Horford have been integral. "Derrick is by far the best acquisition of all those," the Western Conference executive said. "He is an unheralded star on the Celtics team this year."
Stevens, the architect of last year's Finals team, and this year's squad that hopes to join it, and the coach who tried to make it work with so many additions that never quite added up, finally has the player the franchise has spent the better part of a decade looking for.
Derrick White, he says, is a "perfect fit."

2023.05.28 19:01 Able_Possession8736 A Comprehensive Guide to Pro Football Video Game Covers

Another Madden $70 re-skin is upon us, so let's take a moment to explore the history of all the people who have been featured on the cover of an pro football video game.
While the selection of the Madden cover athlete is now an event, there was a wild wild west period of football games from the 80s to the mid-2000s where anybody with a computer could and would build football games, with the selection of the cover being all over the place. Roger Craig was the first cover athlete in 1985 on NFL Challenge for MS-DOS. Madden's first game was in 1988, then by the mid-90s getting a cover athlete or spokesman for your football game was pretty standard.
I wanted to compile those games and covers based on this Wiki article (and a few that it was missing from that list) and see who was on the main cover of all of those games (some games were almost completely irrelevant, so I left them off this list). Some of these may have more alternates with other people, but I'll stick with the main cover.

Covers by Position

https://preview.redd.it/1dzua4o2hl2b1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=023c573335e64d21fccc937a44db0ae995510db6
*These are heavily boosted by John Madden being on 10 Madden covers
Obviously QBs dominate here, but I didn't realize how little defensive players have been on football game covers (9%), with none being on a cover since Richard Sherman in 2014. I'd love to see more defensive players on the Madden cover. Who would be the most likely defensive guy in the near future? Aaron Donald, TJ Watt, Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, or Sauce Gardner?

Covers by Team

https://preview.redd.it/8f29df4ygl2b1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=3b93f8a4ddb26b2cee1f6abd74652f44b7fbfdcb
If a team's player was not a lead on the cover or was not any identifiable player, I gave them a *
The Re-skins/Commanders?, Jags, Panthers, and Bills have appeared on a cover but never with an athlete as the lead or with a real person. Only the Texans have never appeared at all on the cover of any football video game. I'd say the Bills are most likely to get one next (Josh Allen), then the Jags (Trevor Lawrence), then the Panthers/Texans if either hits a home run with Young or Stroud. The Commanders have a long road ahead to getting a feature cover athlete, unless you ask Sam Howell who thinks he should be this year's Madden cover athlete.

Most Prolific Cover People

Kordell Stewart, Daunte Culpepper, and Donovan McNabb (and possibly Lamar Jackson, still too early for him) are the only players with multiple appearances that are either not or are unlikely to make the Hall of Fame. McNabb is the only guy to appear in multiple covers in the same year. Also of note, 7 athletes were on a cover without ever making a pro bowl in their careers: Brad Muster, Pat Terrell, Gordon Laro, Chris Zorich, Albert Fontenot, William Floyd, and Peyton Hillis (Hillis was the only one to be the primary cover athlete).
I'll list all the games and their respective covers by their era below. I'll also attach some of my favorite covers from each era. If the cover person was a Hall of Famer, I'll mark them with a \). If they're very likely to make the HoF but they're not yet eligible, I'll mark them with a +

Covers by Era

Decade # of Games # of Games w/Cover Athletes # of Cover Athletes
60s 1 0 0
70s 4 0 0
80s 11 2 (18%) 2
90s 36 32 (89%) 21
00s 40 38 (95%) 36
10s 14 10 (71%) 12
20s 8 4 (50%) 5
Total 114 86 (75%) 76
We didn't see the first cover athlete until 1985 with Roger Craig. They didn't really become standard until the early to mid-90s after Madden became a big selling point for the early Madden games. The dip in the last 2 decades is because there's just less games, so any generic football games will have a large effect.

The Early Days: 1965-1982

1978: Football! for the Magnavox Odyssey 2 was the first football video game with a cover, but obviously the cover athletes are generic.
Year Game Cover Athlete Team Position
1965 FTBALL NA NA NA
1972 Football (Magnavox) NA NA NA
1978 Football! Generic players NA NA
1978 Football (Atari) Generic players NA NA
1979 NFL Football Generic players NA NA
1982 Realsports: Football Generic players NA NA

The 2D Era: 1983-1996

1985: NFL Challenge was the first football game with a real cover athlete (Roger Craig). This was the original bar for realism in football simulation, to where it was used in a 1988 ESPN Program \"NFL Dream Season\" where they simulated the greatest teams of all time against each other.

The Parity Era: 1997-2004

1997: NFL Blitz came from Midway studios and was a breath of fresh air for football games. They had mostly been stagnant trying to hone in on realistic simulation in 2D form, whereas Blitz came out in 3D and threw realism out the window. I definitely spent too much money on the arcade version of this game.
2000: Madden 2001 started the tradition of having their games feature a cover athlete in this format, which consolidated into nearly everyone following this trend.
2001: Backyard Football 2002 was a more kid-friendly version of a football video game, and they also had other games for other professional sports. I definitely played this a lot on my old Windows Me computer, and Pablo Sanchez is a god.
2002: NFL Fever was Microsoft's foray into football video games on the original Xbox. All 3 of their games featured Peyton Manning as the cover athlete.
2002: NFL GameDay 2003 was 989 Sports' exclusive for Sony on the PlayStation platform.
2004: ESPN NFL 2K5 was the last great football game before the NFL exclusively gave their license to the EA. It was this game that definitely led to NFL's decision though, as they slashed their release price to an unheard of $20, which forced Madden 2004 to release at $30 instead of the typical $50. This pissed off the NFL, who decided to have less competition instead.

This game received praise for its mechanics, but poor sales showed that a non-NFL licensed game would always struggle to make it.

2019: Doug Flutie's Maximum Football was a mix of american and CFL football as another attempt at making a football game without the NFL license to poor results. They have announced a new game as a free to play title on new platforms, but no games in this franchise have released since 2020.
2020: Retro Bowl is a mobile game more in the style of Tecmo Super Bowl than Madden. It's probably the most successful non-Madden game since ESPN NFL 2K5, and it's pretty fun. People should definitely give this one a try since it's free to play on any mobile platform.
2022: Madden 23 gave the cover back to Madden for the first time since 1999 to honor the passing of the legend John Madden. Unfortunately the game inside the cover was crap, has been the style of Madden games for over a decade.

2023.05.28 18:22 chadowan A Comprehensive Guide to Pro Football Video Game Covers

Covers by Position

https://preview.redd.it/1dzua4o2hl2b1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=79174425f34c9090dacddd78d3679923182d5f3a
*These are heavily boosted by John Madden being on 10 Madden covers
Obviously QBs dominate here, but I didn't realize how little defensive players have been on football game covers (9%), with none being on a cover since Richard Sherman in 2014. I'd love to see more defensive players on the Madden cover. Who would be the most likely defensive guy in the near future? Aaron Donald, TJ Watt, Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, or Sauce Gardner?

Covers by Team

https://preview.redd.it/8f29df4ygl2b1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=cfa6fba341321f2fb7be68a4be1d0e89404f9e40

2023.05.28 15:32 stayclassypeople the 1976-77 Bowl Season

This is the 3rd post in a series going over the bowl seasons from 1974-1997. Each year I'm examining the bowls with national title implications and the teams competing for the #1 ranking. If you want to catch up on prior seasons, check out the link to the master post as well!
Editors note: I'm changing the title from "Bowls and the Race for the Mythical National Championship to "The (insert year) Bowl Season" for simplicity.

Setting the Stage
Bowls with National title implications Sugar and Rose
Teams with national title hopes Pittsburgh, Michigan, USC
Darkhorses Maryland and Georgia

Pre-Bowl rankings (1st place votes in parentheses)
Teams Record AP Coaches
Pittsburgh 11-0 1( 45) 1
Michigan 10-1 2 (8) 2
USC 10-1 3 (3) 3
Maryland 11-0 4 (2) 5
Georgia 10-1 5 4
Three teams (4 if you count Maryland) entered the season with dream of a championship. Pitt controlled its own destiny, but if they slipped up, the Rose bowl winner between #2 Michigan and #3 USC was waiting in the wings. Maryland probably didn't have a snowballs chance in hell, but we'll give them some love anyway. As for Georgia, scoring a win over #1 Pitt would certainly give them some love, but would it be enough to leapfrog them to #1?
Sugar Bowl: #1 Pittsburgh vs #5/4 Georgia (Jan 1st noon EST)
The path was clear and the stage was set for #1 Pitt. Take down SEC champ UGA and none of the other bowl games would matter as they would assuredly be a unanimous #1 in each poll. Lose and the Rose bowl, which kicked off 5 hours later, would become a de facto national title. I also wouldn't rule out Georgia getting some first place love in either poll as well. Suffice it to say, the Panthers made it simple for the voters. They jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half and cruised to a 27-3 win, out gaining the Dawgs 480 to 181. The race for #1 was all over but the crying.

Cotton Bowl: #4/5 Maryland vs #6/7 Houston (Jan 1st, 4PM EST)
Like Arizona St the year before, I doubt Maryland had a real chance to claim a #1 spot in either poll with a win, even if Pitt lost. The voters most likely would crown one of the Rose Bowl blue bloods #1, but, a perfect season was a lot to play for. Unfortunately for them, Houston had other plans. The Cougars pounced on them and led 21-0 after 1 quarter. Maryland cut the lead to 27-21 mid 4th, but Houston iced the game with a late field goal to win 30-21.

Rose Bowl #2 Michigan vs #3 USC (Jan 1st 5PM)
It was a highly anticipated match up between the Big 10 and Pac 8 champions. The only thing that could make things more climactic was Pitt losing earlier in the day, opening the door for Michigan or USC to claim #1. Unfortunately by kick off, both teams knew they'd be playing for 2nd place. Michigan struck first in the 2nd to lead 6-0, but wouldn't score again. USC took a 7-6 lead before the half and another in the 4th to win 14-6.

Post Bowl rankings (1st place votes in parentheses)
*only includes teams receiving 1st place votes
Teams record AP Coaches
Pittsburgh 12-0 1 (59) 1 (39)
USC 11-1 2 (3) 2 (3)
Once in a blue moon, things work out pretty cleanly. As the nations lone unbeaten, 12-0 Pitt was an overwhelming #1 in both polls. No disrespect to USC, but its kind of an insult to Pitt that USC siphoned off 3 1st place votes in each poll. Props to USC for the 11 wins and Rose Bowl crown, but losing by 3 touchdowns to a bad Missouri team should have been enough to change those voters minds. Guess not.
Finally shout out to Rutgers. They went 11-0 as an independent but didn't get a bowl invite. They played an exceptionally light schedule, with 7 opponents that would eventually become IAA/FCS teams at the time (the FBS/FCS split didn't occur until 1978) and only 1 opponent finishing with a winning record. They finished the year #17 in each poll.

2023.05.28 06:50 Dai_Tian-Ci 2023 Football Player Breakdown: Kris Jenkins

Kris Jenkins is 6'3" 285lb senior defensive tackle. He was a 3 star prospect from Olney Maryland back in the 2020 class, he chose us over offers from Penn State, Virginia Tech, Iowa and Sparty among others. He played tight end and defensive end in HS making plenty of highlights, but Michigan saw a lot of potential in him as a run stuffer and moved him to DT.
He is one of the special dudes Harbaugh refers to as a "football guy", you can always see how genuinely happy and excited playing football makes Kris, he's living his best life!
He certainly had the opportunity to go to the NFL, but chose to return for 2023 for "unfinished business". His dad, Kris Jenkins SR, was a really good player in the NFL for a long time, same goes for his uncle Cullen Jenkins. Our guy clearly comes from a football family and now he is getting talked about as a potential first round pick for next year!
"At the end of the day, this place feels home to me. The culture we have here with the coaches, my teammates the players, the fans even, this whole place feels like home to me. It didn't feel like anything was wrong with coming back here for one last time. Continuing to grind with my boys and get after it, we love what we do here. They make me really love being here, I just love being here." @ kjj_18 on IG, give the man a follow!
He made his first appearance in 2020, but it would be the 2021 and 2022 seasons where Kris would really make a name for himself as an immovable object plugging up rushing lanes. I have slimmed down his logs from mgoblue to give you just the highlights:
Sophomore (2021) • Appeared in all 14 games with four starts along the defensive line; made 22 tackles including a shared tackle for loss, and one quarterback hurry to earn his second varsity letter • Played along the defensive line against Western Michigan (Sept. 4) • Against Washington (Sept. 11), made five tackles (one solo) with a shared tackle for loss playing along the defensive line • Made his first career start against Northern Illinois (Sept. 18) and was credited with one assisted tackle • Started at the end spot against Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game (Dec. 4) and contributed four tackles • Credited with seven tackles playing along the defensive line against Georgia in the Capital One Orange Bowl/CFP Semifinal (Dec. 31)
Junior (2022) • Started all 14 games at defensive tackle; led all defensive linemen with 54 tackles and added 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and two quarterback hurries to earn his third varsity letter • All-Big Ten selection (honorable mention, coaches and media) • On five occasions, shared Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performances against UConn, Penn State, Michigan State, at Iowa, Illinois • Made two solo tackles, including a sack, in a start against Colorado State (Sept. 3) • Started at end against UConn (Sept. 17) and led the defense with five tackles (three solo) • Had a five-tackle day starting along the interior against Maryland (Sept. 24) • Contributed three stops starting at Iowa (Oct. 1) • Started against Penn State (Oct. 15) and made four tackles (one solo) from the interior • Registered one TFL among five stops in a start against Michigan State (Oct. 29) • Delivered three solo tackles inclduing a five-yard sack at Rutgers (Nov. 5) • Notched five tackles starting on the interior against Illinois (Nov. 19) • Led all defensive linemen with five tackles (three solo) at Ohio State (Nov. 26) • Made two tackles against Purdue in the Big Ten Championship (Dec. 3) • Notched four tackles against TCU in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl/CFP Semifinal (Dec. 31)
As you can see, Kris was a huge contributor to our success last year, dude had multiple run stuffs in literally every single game so I had to do some editing lmao! You can find the full logs in the first link.
So, where do things go from here for Kris? The former Academic All-Big Ten honoree ('21) wants to get his degree, win his 3rd Big Ten Championship and capture that elusive National Title!
A couple things you may not know about Kris, he's one of five players who are featured on our new NBC intro for games on their network (along w Corum, Edwards, McCarthy, Sainristil), and he also featured in the super bowl commercial for Mike Morse (along w Morris, Colson, Oluwatimi, Keegan).
This is part of a series breaking down Michigan players for 2023, if you want to check out the previous post about Alex Orji you can at the link here.

Title
Derrick White (born July 2, 1994)[1] is an American professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played three years of college basketball in Division II for the UCCS Mountain Lions before transferring to the Division I Colorado Buffaloes for his final season.
White was selected 29th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2017 NBA draft. In February 2022, he was traded to the Celtics & became a key contributor for the team when they reached the NBA Finals.
White was the first graduating class of his high school, as it was brand new. As a result, there were no upper classmen on the basketball team when he was a freshman.[3] A 2012 graduate of Legend High School in Parker, Colorado, White was a six-foot combo guard at the time of his graduation. On 2/17/2023 Legend High School retired Derrick White's High School Number
White was lightly recruited out of high school, receiving no scholarship offers from any four-year institutions. At the time of his high school graduation, which fell about two months before his 18th birthday, he was barely 6 feet tall—after growing two inches during his senior year.[4] The only head coach at a four-year school who showed sustained interest in White was Jeff Culver, then the head coach at the Denver campus of Johnson & Wales University, a non-scholarship NAIA member better known for its culinary program. By the time White was preparing to make his college decision, Culver was hired as head coach at NCAA Division II UCCS, and offered White a room and board stipend for his freshman season.[5] Culver was only expecting White to become a starter late in his college career. He was aware that White's father had a late growth spurt in college, and also knew that doctors had projected White to potentially reach 6'5".[5] As it turned out, White reached that potential height by the time he enrolled at Colorado–Colorado Springs.[4] With his newfound size and athleticism, White became a star at UCCS, starting every game of his three-year career and left as the school's career leader in points (1,912) and assists (343). In his junior season, he averaged 25.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.2 assists for the Mountain Lions, leading the team to the 2015 NCAA tournament.[6] He was named an All-American.
Following this season, White opted to transfer to Division I Colorado to play for Tad Boyle and to test his skills in the Pac-12 Conference, one of the top college leagues in the country.[7] After sitting out the 2015–16 season per NCAA rules, White excelled in his lone season with the Buffaloes, averaging 18.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. He was named first-team All-Pac-12 and a member of the five-man All-Defensive team.[8]
White was one of 60 NBA prospects invited to the 2017 NBA Draft Combine.[9] He was one of only 15 combine invitees who had not been Rivals top-150 prospects in high school, and one of only three who did not sign with Division I programs out of high school. In addition, according to Yahoo! Sports writer Jeff Eisenberg, he was also "the only one who will use part of his first NBA contract to pay off student loans he accumulated paying for tuition at UCCS as a freshman."[5]
The San Antonio Spurs drafted White with the 29th pick of the 2017 NBA draft.[10] White was later included in the Spurs' 2017 NBA Summer League roster.[11] On July 6, White signed with the Spurs.[12]
On October 18, 2017, White made his NBA debut, coming off the bench in a 107–99 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.[13] On October 31, 2017, he was sent along with Dāvis Bertāns to the Austin Spurs of the NBA G League.[14] White suffered a fractured right wrist during a G League game against the Texas Legends. He was then recalled to San Antonio several days later.[15][16] On March 12, 2018, White scored a career-high 14 points along with four rebounds, one assist, and a block in a 93-109 loss to the Houston Rockets.[17]
On April 14, 2018, White made his NBA playoffs debut, coming off the bench with seven points, an assist, a steal, and a block in a 92–113 loss to the Golden State Warriors in game 1 of the series.[18]
On October 12, 2018, White was revealed to have a left plantar fascia tear.[19] On November 7, White made his season debut recording one rebound and three assists in a 95–88 loss to the Miami Heat.[20] On December 31, White scored his career-high 22 points with three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal in a 120–111 win over the Boston Celtics.[21] On January 10, 2019, White scored another career-high 23 points with eight assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block in a double-overtime 154–147 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.[22] On January 30, 2019 against the Brooklyn Nets, White then recorded a then career-high 26 points.[23] On April 18, 2019 against the Denver Nuggets, White recorded another career-high of 36 points to give San Antonio a 2–1 lead in the first round of the 2019 playoffs.
On December 21, 2020, the Spurs announced that they had signed White to a reported four-year, $73 million rookie scale extension.[24][25] On April 1, 2021, White hit a career-high 7 three-pointers in a 129–134 double overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks.[26]
Boston Celtics: Flourishing off-the-bench role (2022–present) Edit On February 10, 2022, White was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, a 2022 first-round pick and the rights to swap 2028 first-round picks.[27] White played his first game with the Celtics a day later and finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
In Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat, White scored 22 points on 7-for-14 shooting, alongside 5 assists and 3 steals, in a 111–103 loss.[28] The Celtics would go on to eliminate the Heat, earning White his first Finals appearance in his career.[29] In Game 1 of the Finals, he logged 21 points and three assists in a 120–108 win over the Golden State Warriors.[30] The Celtics went on to lose the series in six games.
On February 13, 2023, White was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week, after averaging 24.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists as a starter in place of the injured Marcus Smart.[31] At the end of the season, White was named for the first time to the NBA All-Defensive Second team.[32]
On May 27, 2023, in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals, White made a buzzer-beating tip-in shot as time expired to beat the Miami Heat 104–103 to force a Game 7, saving the Celtics from elimination.[33][34]
On August 24, 2019, White was included in the US national team's final roster for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.[35]

2023.05.28 04:10 PestyAssassin33WU93 Take a flyer on Zach Edey for our 50th pick?

Zach Edey is a 7'4, 285lbs Toronto-born center coming out of Purdue, and he isn't even projected to be drafted in this year's draft.
He is a dominant post up player with a big body, averaging 22 points a game this year on 60% fg shooting. He is also a good offensive rebounder, generating almost 6 offensive rebounds a game.
The problem with Zach's game is that he isn't a very good defender despite his large frame and size. I think if we were to draft him, having him at the 5 with Chet at the 4 would compliment both his and Chet's games and could potentially generate decent synergy amongst both players. Chet at the 4 enables him to be the shot-blocking defensive roaming anchor (similar to AD's role), while Zach at the 5 becomes the big body enforcer that slows down bigger bigs that Chet's frame can't handle.
Zach has good IQ for a big man, noticing double teams coming and can quickly make the outlet pass to the open man. He is relatively coordinated and also has good hands and touch around the basket in general. He is a fine free throw shooter at 74% (7fta).
Here is a short Pro Day workout from DraftExpress of him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbZVq79g8yc&ab_channel=DraftExpress
Yes it is a workout in an empty-ish gym, but his shooting form looks promising and having an acceptable free throw percentage gives me optimism that he may eventually start knocking down threes at a very low rate (with the coaching of Chip Engelland).

2023.05.27 20:18 jimbobbypaul Ranking the Top 131 FBS Programs of the Last 40 Years: 90. Indiana

Main hub thread with the full 131 rankings
Hoosier Daddy? Indiana finally comes in at 90 after weeks of clamoring from their fans. The Hoosiers don’t have a lot of historical success, with just 2 AP top 10 finishes since 1936, when the poll originated. What they do have, is a loyal and passionate fanbase. I can’t imagine they’ll continue to struggle forever, as each of their last 3 coaches have gotten them to a bowl game, and they have a strong alumni base. Still, they come in as the 4th worst Power 5 team on this list and the last placed team in the Big Ten.

Indiana: 0-11 (-57.235) Overall Score: 8059 (90th)
Woof. The only reason Indiana’s this high is because of strength of schedule being a Power 5 team. Other than that it’s been rough, with no top 20 finishes in 40 years according to the JB Rankings. One thing Indiana’s been underrated at? Producing a few extremely good RBs. All 4 of their consensus All-Americans are shared between 3 RBs (Anthony Thompson 1988 and ‘89, Vaughn Dunbar 1991, Tevin Coleman 2014). Tevin Coleman ran for 2036 yards and 15 TD on 7.5 YPC, finishing 7th in Heisman voting in 2014 for just a 4-8 team. Notable NFL players include Coleman, QB Trent Green, OL Roger Saffold, WR Antwaan Randle El, and CB Tracy Porter.

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 1984 (0-11 overall, 0-9 Big Ten)
1984 Indiana wouldn’t have even been the best team in their state if they went down a level—Indiana State was ranked atop the Division 1-AA polls for most of the year after a 9-0 start. Still, the theme of the season for the 1984 Hoosiers was “growing pains”. Led by first year head coach Bill Mallory, Mallory would go on to become the school’s winningest coach with a record of 69-77-3 from 1984-96, making 6 bowls and appearing in the AP Top 25 in 6 separate years. So for the 1984 season, it was about laying the foundation to break a losing culture that had lasted over 3 decades. After starting the season losing 24-31 to (eventual) 2-9 Duke and 14-48 to Kentucky, Indiana slowly improved throughout the year, losing 6 Big Ten games by one possession. QB Steve Bradley threw for 2544 yards 10 TD 20 INT, but somehow was drafted in the 12th round of the 1986 NFL Draft despite never posting a single season with more TDs than INTs. OT Kevin Allen was by far the most talented player on the team, picked with the 9th overall selection by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1985 NFL Draft, but would go on to be a collasal bust and despised in Philly. Allen was ranked as the 4th worst player in NFL history by Deadspin in 2011.
5. 1991 (7-4-1 overall, 5-3 Big Ten)
We’ll see 4 seasons from coach Mallory in this top 5. After a great 1987 and ‘88, Indiana had fallen back into their old ways in ‘89-90, going 11-11-1 and 6-9-1 in the Big Ten. Mallory brought Indiana back to the Big Ten’s top 4 in 1991, mostly thanks to the consensus All-American season by RB Vaughn Dunbar, but also because of the emergence of QB Trent Green. Dunbar finished 6th in Heisman voting, amassing 2068 yards and 12 TD from scrimmage. He set the school record for rushing yards with 1805, unbroken until Tevin Coleman in 2014. Green led the Big Ten in TDs with 25, completing 59% of passes for 2627 yards and 12 TD 14 INT, while rushing for 202 yards and 13 TD. Indiana mostly beat up on teams that finished with losing records (but are known today as solid programs) like Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. One possession losses to #4 Michigan and #19 Ohio State showed they could compete with the big boys too. The season came down to 5-4-1 Indiana vs 4-6 Purdue for the Old Oaken Bucket and a bowl appearance for Indiana. Purdue lined up for the winning 36 yard FG with 30 seconds left…and sailed it wide right. Indiana took the Bucket, made the Copper Bowl, and trounced Baylor 24-0 to finish 7-4-1 and 32nd in my rankings.
4. 1993 (8-4 overall, 5-3 Big Ten)
This was the last great Mallory-coached team, and the last Indiana team to make a bowl game until 2007. The run game was much weaker than usual, but this was easily the best defense in the Mallory era, giving up just 16.4 PPG with 9 players that played in the NFL. Indiana jumped out to a 5-1 start, giving up just 12.3 PPG, then shut out Northwestern 24-0 and #22 Michigan State 10-0. Indiana was ranked #17, at 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, and had one of the best defenses in the country giving up just 9.3 PPG. A pivotal game against #19 Penn State was one of the biggest “prove it” games in recent memory for Indiana, and they nearly delivered, losing just 31-38. Indiana would also put up a great fight against #5 Ohio State, losing 17-24, before finishing 8-3 with a win over Purdue for the 5th time in 7 years. #21 Indiana lost 20-45 to #22 Virginia Tech in the Independence Bowl to finish the year 8-4, 4th place in the Big Ten, and #27 in my rankings.
3. 1987 (8-4 overall, 6-2 Big Ten)
This Indiana team was subtly stacked. This was Mallory’s 4th year as head coach, going from 0-11 to 4-7 to 6-6 the previous 3 years. 1987 was when they put the Big Ten on notice for the first time, and was in serious contention for the Big Ten title. After starting 3-1, Indiana headed to #9 Ohio State, who was coming off 8 straight years of AP top 15 finishes. The game wasn’t close—and not for the team you think. Indiana held Ohio State to just 10 rushing yards in the 2nd half of a 31-10 win, which Buckeyes coach Earle Bruce called “The darkest day in Ohio State football since I have been associated with it,” dating back to 1979. After a win over Minnesota, #15 Indiana hosted #20 Michigan in front of a nearly sold out crowd of 51,000, and caused delays on Michigan’s drives in the 2nd quarter because of crowd noise. The Indiana defense dominated yet again, winning 14-10, and this was the last time Indiana would beat Michigan until 2020.
The Big Ten was suddenly an unexpected 2-horse race between Indiana and Michigan State. #11 Indiana, their highest ranking in 18 years, made the trek to Kinnick Stadium, where dreams go to die, and Iowa beat the Hoosiers 29-21. Following up with a win over Illinois—Indiana controlled their destiny: Beat Michigan State and Purdue, and you’re Big Ten champions. Playing on national TV, #13 Michigan State dominated #16 Indiana 27-3, and the Spartans won the conference title. Purdue kicked the (old oaken) bucket in the rivalry game, and Indiana rolled to a 35-14 win and a 3rd place finish in the B1G. A close loss to Tennessee in the bowl and they finished 8-4.
The team was subtly stacked as I mentioned. RB Anthony Thompson ran for 1000+ yards and would go on to become a 2x consensus All-American. WR Ernie Jones caught 66 passes for 1265 yards and 13 TD, and was the Big Ten co-Player of the Year and a 1st Team All-American. OT Eric Moore was 2nd Team All-Big Ten and a top 10 NFL Draft pick in 1988. LB Van Waiters was 3rd Team All-American. Coach Mallory won Big Ten Coach of the Year. This has a real claim as the “best” Indiana team due to the wins over Ohio State/Michigan.
2. 2020 (6-2 overall, 6-1 Big Ten)
One of the darlings of 2020. The Penix → Fryfogle connection took the Big Ten by storm first in name, then in production. Indiana was coming off an 8-5 year in which they nearly missed out on 9WINDIANA status, and brought momentum into 2020. It seemed like everyone else overlooked them, though. The turning point in the season came immediately—week 1 against #8 Penn State. Down 35-28 in OT, Indiana scored on a 9 yard TD and elected to go for 2. Going for the left corner, Penix DIVED from the 5 yard line, reaching for the pylon…GOT IT! INDIANA WINS 36-35! 2 weeks later they’d beat #23 Michigan 38-21, their first win against the Wolverines since 1987. 1 week later Indiana would beat Michigan State 24-0 thanks to a standout defensive effort and a breakout 200 yard receiving performance from WR Ty Fryfogle.
That set up #9 Indiana at #3 Ohio State, the top 10 matchup we all saw coming. And boy, Indiana came to PLAY. Ohio State narrowly escaped with a 42-35 win, with Justin Fields throwing 3 INTs and Fryfogle going for 7 catches, 218 yards, and 3 TD. This Indiana team was legitimately a really good team, and they even beat #16 Wisconsin 14-6 to finish off the regular season. They’d lose the Outback Bowl in an upset to 4-5 Ole Miss, but finished #12 in the AP Poll, the highest in over 50 years. Penix finished 2nd Team All-Big Ten with 1645 passing yards 14 TD 4 INT. Fryfogle won the Big Ten WR of the Year, catching 37 balls for 721 yards and 7 TD. A whopping 4 defensive players finished 1st Team All-Big Ten, with the entire secondary making the 1st-3rd Team. Even special teams had no weaknesses, with kicker Charles Campbell going 10/11 on FGs. Penix has since transferred to Washington and continues to live up to his potential, finishing 8th in Heisman voting in 2022.
1. 1988 (8-3-1 overall, 5-3 Big Ten)
2020 was good…but 1988 was dominant. They opened with 41-14 and 35-16 wins over Rice and Kentucky. After tying Missouri and blowing out Northwestern, Indiana hosted Ohio State a year after the “darkest day” in Ohio State history. This was arguably worse. Indiana scored on 4 of their first 5 possessions, held a 28-0 lead at halftime, and big brother’d the Buckeyes 41-7. An unthinkable result today. Fast forward a few weeks later, 5-2 Indiana hosted 4-2-2 (their record, not a soccer formation) Iowa. Iowa QB Chuck Hartlieb would set the single game school record with an insane 558 passing yards, and Indiana RB Anthony Thompson broke a school record with 47 carries. Indiana won 45-34, after Iowa nearly came back from a 35-3 deficit. In the last week of the regular season, Indiana blew out Purdue 52-7 on their home turf, in one of the greatest performances in the rivalry’s history. Even the bowl game was a wipe, beating 8-3 South Carolina 34-10.
Indiana scored 33.0 PPG while giving up just 19.6 PPG. 7 wins were by 20+ points, and 4 by 30+. QB Dave Schnell, former 1985 high school player of the year, was 2nd Team All-Big Ten, leading the conference in yards per attempt. RB Anthony Thompson won his 1st of 2 Big Ten POTYs, rushing for 1686 yards and 26(!) TD on 4.7 YPC. 9 players total were 1st/2nd Team All-Big Ten. Kicker Pete Stoyanovich was 1st Team All-B1G, and went on to be Dan Marino’s kicker on the Miami Dolphins for 7 years from 1989-95. He also served as a kicking double in Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (1994).

5th Quarter

Will Indiana ever surpass Purdue as a football program? Why hasn’t Indiana been as good in football as they’ve been in basketball? Did Penix score that 2 point conversion against Penn State in 2020? Who was really the best Indiana squad between 2020 and the 1980’s teams? And where do you think Indiana stands as a program going forward?
If you appreciate the effort, please consider subscribing on substack!

2023.05.27 18:08 mexbesa So I failed the 5k training plan for beginners

Sorry coach Jeff, I failed you. Stuck to the training plan, never skipped anything and today was the final day. After about 4k I gave up because I felt dizzy and light headed and walked the last kilometer. Measured BP at home and it was at 126/64, which is dangerously low on the diastolic side. Before the run I thought I'd push through no matter what but I think if I kept going I would have passed out. Which is strange, because last time I ran I made 4k easily and felt like I could go the full 5k or beyond there and then, I felt great. I had enough rest between runs too so I thought finishing 5k now wouldn't be a problem but maybe I underestimated the weather. It was 21 degrees celsius which doesn't sound like much but felt way hotter than that, probably because I was running. Still, kind of of disappointed I couldn't do this even after 11 weeks of training.
Final time was 38:37, pace 7:43 /km. Average HF at 187 which is probably way too high too. Anyway, just needed to vent, thanks for listening :)

2023.05.27 00:30 ManicMarie30 Cadence question

I have a Garmin instinct, and I am currently doing a 14 week 10k training plan with coach Jeff. I had stride repeats a couple days ago, and I wanted to keep track of my cadence while I was running but I didn’t see a way to do that.
I have to do that again next week, and I would love to be able to see my cadence while running if that’s possible. Is there a way to do that?

2023.05.26 23:52 GonzoJackOfAllTrades Let’s Not Panic, People

So much wringing of hands, rending of garments, and general wails for the death of the show. Let’s take a deep breath and consider the many positives that this finale has given us, often riding on the back of some of those moments that weren’t satisfying.
For starters, the ‘96 timeline is doing just fine. Yeah, Lottie stepping down feels like a disappointment, but who was ever going to truly challenge her?
Now we have Nat thrust into the leadership role, which she did not seem to want but which seemed to grow on her with each silent oath of fealty. What happens between now and the rescue that turns that smiling young woman into the hot mess of the modern timeline?
I imagine that part of it will be the conflict between her and Shauna that seemed to bleed across 25 years to the moment they meet again in Nat’s motel room.
And yeah, Shauna tearfully scrawling in her diary about how unfair the world is was hilarious but that unfinished sentence about what she realized could have finished in wildly different ways. Based on the respect she commands in the present timeline (at least at the beginning, yeah the power dynamics seem a bit fluid/sloppy), but based on what we see I don’t think that sentence was going to end in a bunch of emo navel-gazing.
Just a couple of weeks ago I was personally rooting for Coach Ben to hop the Crystal Express to Flavortown and put us all out of his misery. Now it would seem that he’s gone the crazed homicidal hermit route. Good times.
Add to that the upping of the difficulty with the loss of the cabin and President Nat’s first 100 days are looking very shaky.
So, yeah. Then there’s the modern timeline. Yes, it feels like the writers suddenly had to clean up their room and decided to shove a lot of shit in the closet, BUT! clean the room they did.
Was Walter’s solution to the Adam Martin situation absolute clownshoes? Yes! Is it a damn shame that Kevyn died while Pornstache lived? Hell to the Yes!
But, have they made Walter seem like the kind of guy who could create the needed digital paper trail to pull it off and made Pornstache seem like the kind of scumbag who would take the offer for professional gain? You know it!
Final result, the Adam Martin plot can be relegated to the dustbin of history. In its wake we have a strange new dynamic between Callie and Shauna and I can’t wait to see how out of his depth Jeff will be with those two.
And yes, the decision to have Jeff and Callie lead the Starsky and Schmuck to the compound was an odd choice, but that moment when Lottie met Callie? Totally worth the forced bottle episode structure.
Nat is gone. Bummer. Without her, how will we find out what really happened to Travis? Guess what. Lottie is not some cunning big bad. She’s a deeply traumatized woman with unreliable brain chemistry just barely keeping her l self in check. Count me among those who think Travis’ death was as dumb and pointless as she said it was.
So Nat’s death sucks. The character was done dirty. But now we get to see what a truly grief stricken Misty looks like as she seeks comfort in the arms of a quietly homicidal lunatic. Yeah, Walter was an absurd deus ex machina, but his calm methodology suggests some absolute madness in the near future.
Some feel Van was done dirty as she loses her laid back charm. RIP chill and quirky Van. Long live desperate manipulator Van.
Yes, Simone and Sammy are somewhere in the depths of New Jersey ready to potentially blow up Tai (and the other YJ’s) world. If she lives, she and pictures of Tai’s altar go to the press. Interesting times.
So, yeah. The pacing was weird (so much ground to cover). We didn’t get everything we wanted. The show has evolved in some ways that weren’t always logical.
Still the stage has been set for some good stuff moving forward. It almost feels like a soft reset on some of the more questionable choices this season.
I,for one, am going to trust the writers.

2023.05.26 23:33 Southern_Plastic_120 Thoughts

I'll keep watching cause I watch shows until the end, but I am not sure it will be a priority like it is now. When season 1 ended I told all my friends. I could not wait! Now... Idk some of my issues...
Tai- I get it's only been a few days, but yeah She took that lady's car!! Then LEFT it But she also left Sammy and Simone and Steve and even her style. ( all start w S) Is she famous or not? No one knew her at the crime scene but the trucker did. The whole Senate thing was just gone like...ok... All her storylines are gone except Van.
Nat- love Sophie, love Juliette but idc really about Sophie in the Wilderness because well Juliette is dead. That was too much of a trope for Natalie to be all forgiving and loving to just die. Come on. Also why did the others act shocked she was so messed up.
The Sadeki's - I could probably watch a Santa Clarita x Ozark x whatever type show about them like crazy parents that involve the kids. I LOVE JEFF THE TRUE RIDE OR DIE!! and Callie's Apple did not fall far from the psychopathic fucked up man-eating tree. Shauna is a freaking crazy unhinged VILLIAN
Misty and Walter - who is watching the parrot? Besides being likable actors they have no redeemable qualities REALLY they kill w ZERO conscience. They give zero fucks.
The police that are fucked, I loved Kevyn and I liked Matt too. That's just tied up now cause Matt realized he was in way over his head at least, so basically there are NO good guys now only a show of villains..wow.
Ben- good as dead. I mean if the girls don't kill him. Then how does he get rescued, hiding in a tree???
Lottie- so anti-climatic so what the compound is over?? Lisa can't take over more loose ends.
Van - is she dying, not dying whatever don't care.
Mari -dont care if she is rude she is starving in the wilderness and that that's peoples biggest character flaw with the show LMAO
Travis - we obviously DGAF how he really died now.. Or who drained his account...
Javi had to die because he would age or they would change actors.
The redshirts don't care, why are they still around...
Akilah and her nephew's stories are possibly the only likable ones and she is dead.
Crystal no idea if she was real no one ever spoke to her that was not from Mistys POV but idk no one gives AF Coach is missing maybe they think Coach is still in his room. They would rather KILL Javi than find Crystal sooo is she fake...
So now what we wait a year or more to see them what rebuild a shelter and eat more people until they get rescued??

2023.05.26 20:19 steel510rain Walter sent the postcards? Post finale theory

So the whole “moriarty” thing, and how we now know how well Walter can orchestrate a framing of police officers, did he send the postcards? 1- moriarty comment: he could be orchestrating the whole thing - nothing new but further evidenced in ep9. And now we know for sure he is on the side of crime 2- how there was a post in the show about “are any Yellowjackets single?” Narrowed him in to Nat and Misty probably 3 - I’m going to skip all the other obvious stuff about Walter (hacker, detective, probably a “superfan”, it’s all been said a million times, so lump all that in here 4 - in ep 9 when he fake calls from Kevyn’s phone, Jeff asks if he thought it worked and Walter says”he’s definitely panicking!” THIS is what made me think he sent the postcards: to send the Yellowjackets into panic mode and make them act out so he could swoop in and make himself useful. To me, this parallels coach Ben setting fire to the cabin. These guys that have basically been on the sidelines “kicked the hive” and threw the Yellowjackets into a frenzy

2023.05.26 18:57 ally-cat-04 MANY SPOILERS s2e9: half of this episode reaction is about nat and lottie oops (with sprinklings my reactions to other characters)

this episode was messy. i’m finally getting a little more invested in the adult timeline because it’s getting more chaotic. thank god that the adam storyline was wrapped up. my little brother (middle school aged) started watching with me even though he hasn’t seen a single episode and made me explain who each of the characters are. he wouldn’t stop talking about how pretty courtney eaton is (and i can’t blame him cause i’m dumb and gay and pretty women are my weakness).
nat’s death didn’t really hit me emotionally until the plane scene with javi and young lottienat… shows nat had a lot of survivors guilt. when misty got her with the syringe i was more in shock than sad. nat is one of my faves too…
walter and callie carried the chaos in this episode! walter baby talking jeff to try and get him to move kevyn was comedy.
i hate hate hate that i was right about the first leadepotential aq being nat. after last weeks episode i was ranting on here about “lottie def doesn’t want to be the leader so what if nat becomes the leader because she survived the hunt wouldn’t that be wild”. i definitely think the 96 timeline is going to give a lot more lottienat relationship development in the future.
tai needs to go to the mental hospital. and van needs to chill the hell out.
also young lottie is my favorite on this show. my girl is a victim. the yjs took her schizophrenia and turned it into a whole religion and then blamed her for everything happening. lottie didn’t do anything (thus far) except smack her head on a window, cut her hands to try and protect the others, and lose her shit when on shrooms. all her visions are more important to the other girls because they can use them to validate their cannibalism shit show. i was so pissed after lottie was telling misty that she didn’t want anyone else to die and that she didn’t want to be in charge, then misty straight up lied to the girls and said lottie approved javi’s sacrifice.
adult lottie on the other hand…girl really needs to go back on her meds. she’s really into the hunt. van was right about one thing and it’s that lottie may be schizophrenic but that doesn’t mean all the girls are super traumatized because they went through the same thing. locking lottie in a psych ward AGAIN isn’t going to do anything, it’ll just make her stir crazy and she’ll lose it even more.
coach ben is now public enemy #1 to the girls, but i could see him starting the divided factions. if anyone went to ben’s side i’d think it would be lottie, travis, and (maybe) nat when she gets out of being the leader. i kinda hope ben makes it out alive even though i def thought he was dinner…
season one was a lot better than season two imo, but i’m still excited to see where this goes and if season three can bring it back to the same level of chaos as season one.

2023.05.26 18:54 Sad-Principle-8023 Theory - Adam and Van?

Sorry for the novel.
Full disclosure: I understand why folks are disappointed in the writing, but there’s so many storylines and plot points that I don’t mind because it’s impossible to make them all make total sense and still tell a story. I will sacrifice my where is Steve curiosity and how tf does Walter do any of this with a TBI (or why didn’t anybody have an idea of Lottie being around when she wasn’t under the radar in any way, or…) in exchange for the way the show is an examination of trauma and how it alters and bends reality for the survivors. And how it becomes intergenerational (Callie, Sam)? And impacts the bystanders (Jeff, Simone)? I’m obsessed (and obviously team trauma > supernatural)
So! On to my theory of tying together some other theories/notes others have shared!
Main thing: Whole present day story line is instigated by Van being the puppet master and her cancer. In ep9, we can see the way Van manipulated everybody into making the hunt actually happen at Lottie’s campsite (canceling the crisis unit, drawing cards), but I think she has been planning/manipulating this for much longer. In this episode they make a point of teen Van saying she will never feel guilt or shame around doing anything to survive. This made me reflect on the way she made herself seem fatalistic about her cancer.
I read a post about Van and the postcards being retro as a theory of her being the sender. Theory: For Shauna, who doesn’t really believe in “the wilderness,” Van sent her friend Adam Martin, who had previously donated his bone marrow to her, to somehow get her on board. Adam was Van’s Jeff, a person who would do literally anything for her. When Adam disappeared, she backed off either: because she felt he might have been the hunt victim that spared her, or she needed to re-work her plans to make the formal hunt happen again, or she was just patient? Idk.
The way she interacted so differently with Dark Tai vs. daytime Tai and doesn’t want daytime Tai to know about her cancer until after they get to Lottie’s cult says a lot.
Adult Lottie had run out of meds and couldn’t get in touch with her psychiatrist? How did that happen? Maybe Van was involved somehow. Maybe Van was involved in Lottie’s campsite having the symbol built in somehow. Lottie may have been partially or totally in on it, or just intuited it through Van’s actions by the end of the night. The way she attributes the YJ’s depravity to the wilderness, she may think “the wilderness” is driving Van rather than a sick, traumatized version of “I will trade anybody’s life to save my own.” Lottie had a vision of the AQ encouraging a violent hunt, and we know now the AQ was Nat. By the end of the night, she might feel that Nat wanted it this way too.
Lottie kidnapping Nat and then Misty following might be something Van was somehow aware of too? I don’t know how to explain that part, but if you bring Nat to the campsite, Misty will follow.
So basically I’m doing a lot of mental gymnastics to try and figure out wtf is up with Adam’s role in this story other than him having been fridged for the plot to re-awaken Shauna’s bloodlust and add the police investigation to incite some pushes for the second season plot to move forward. We know the show runners planned the series and expected Van to die, but maybe when they kept her they just gave her a storyline that was part of the original plan but intended for a different character?
Also, some general reactions: Misty now has her Jeff in Walter: a ride or die (literally, cuz Misty) who knows her and is perfect for her! Where tf is Lisa and will they juxtapose her role with Ben’s as a threat to the hive? Also knowing Nat was AQ, I need to go back to the beehive talk with that info! Also lol at send in the clowns while Walter is making poison cocoa for the cops. And young Nat repeating Coach’s fantasy saying “you don’t belong here,” did he connect her to the phone call ripping away his fantasy? Nat coping with why she let Javi freeze by giving herself over to everybody seeing her as AQ makes sense to me as a sick trauma response, tearing away her hold on being above murder and the supernatural fantasy washing away her guilt, and she ends her life re-embracing that humanity to prevent Lisa’s murder
If you read all this, thank you for tolerating my ramblings and giving me endless theories 😂

Junior: I was sick for 3 months (2 months being in a row and another month being later), between the end of 1st semester and the whole beginning of this semester so my grades got ruined. I am saving my grades as much as possible currently even if some of my teachers arent being the nicest about the situation.

  11. Captain of a Competitive Coding Team (we did *cough* mid asf *cough*)
  12. Varsity Track: I didn't have a leadership position but I am participating in a bunch of national competitions and I am trying to maybe get recruited if I can. Either way I love hammer throw + weight throw (my events) and I plan to walk on if I can.

  1. My Computer Science Teacher: I have been taking his classes for 4 years (8th - 9th summer CS program) and we both have talked ALOTTT. He has seen me develop as a coder and person, and hopefully he doesn't secretly hate me.
  2. Vice Principle / Track Coach (still debating): We didn't have an actual coach my entire track season, we got coached by the varsity coach. When we went to meets and had home meets, a lot of the time there wouldn't be anyone that understood how to run it or anything. So I got up and decided to run it as best as I could, I ran it the best I could under the vice principle saw me and was pretty happy by what I was doing and he convinced my coach to make me captain of the team. I just don't know exactly who I should ask.

I understand my GPA is pretty low and I shouldn't be aiming too high. But it kind of sucks to have had hella hopes and dreams for college and just mess it all up because of my stupidity. Either way, I'm not gonna let this bum me out, hopefully I can go crazy wherever I go!
Just to repeat again, I would very much appreciate if people could drop some target / easy reaches I should try for!

2023.05.26 03:06 ricuhgee The Wilderness Doesn’t Care About “Good or Bad” and Neither Should We.

Hey Fellowjackets! This is my first post and I’m admittedly a bit nervous, but I need to put these all of these thoughts somewhere. So…here goes nothing lol. [Contains spoilers up to and including S2E08 with a TLDR at the bottom.]
Since being introduced to the characters, there’s been countless debates about which ones are “good” and which are “bad.” This makes sense because we’ve been conditioned to classify archetypes to better understand the purpose a character inhabits for a story. However, a key character, one that isn’t discussed as much, is the Wilderness.
Fruitful and providing when it’s summery, barren and unforgiving when it’s frigid, the Wilderness holds all of the options the characters have and facilitates the actions they perform as a result of their decisions. It homes any and everything that is possible for them. As a character, the Wilderness is the embodiment of both the teens’ dwindling hope and their growing desperation. This season, the teens begin to recognize the Wilderness as a Being, submitting to and worshiping it, doing this more frequently in times of high desperation. They also more commonly refer to the Wilderness by name, despite It always being present in the story.
One of the more central mysteries of the show is the idea of SPILL. My current theory is that “spill” is a euphemism for the blood that is required to survive. This does not exclusively mean human blood. The Wilderness provided the first deer and the second sick deer (which shows all spills don’t yield reward), but the group doesn’t attribute these offerings to It. As the Wilderness changes, the group becomes more desperate and begin to appreciate what It provides (the bear). The Wilderness then transforms into snowcapped emptiness and the offerings are more scarce and wary (Jackie’s body and the birds). Then, there’s nothing.
Here, “spill” becomes equated to their will to survive, requiring them to fully accept their cruel circumstances and submit to what the Wilderness has to offer, because it now refers to the blood of a peer. The answer to the question of “does a hunt that has no violence feed anyone?” is no, but this includes the hunting of animals as well. Thus, the references of “spill” we see in the present day timeline are a direct reflection of the trauma they bear for the roles they played in the morbid events the Wilderness facilitated, rewarding those who did whatever was necessary to survive. With this is mind, we also see the Wilderness transform from a symbol of faith to the “willing decider” of the tragic actions the teens believe are necessary to survive.
Going back to the idea of “good or bad,” I strongly believe the known survivors will be seen as “bad” to those viewers committed to this dichotomy. This is simply because of what it will take to survive, at least from the characters’ perspectives. Also, this explains why the writers intentionally share information that paint the survivors in a morally gray light.
Here is my rundown of the survivors and how their characteristics and circumstances pre- and post-crash that contribute to their survival.
In contrast, the characters we’ve lost to “natural” causes up until this point fail to sever their ties with life outside of the Wilderness and evolve in a self-preserving manner that fully considered their new, dreadful circumstances.
Though we’ve been only been introduced to 7 survivors in the present day timeline, the ritual scene in the pilot suggests there is another survivor unknown to viewers at this time. There have also been quick screenshots of other potential survivors boarding the plane as well.
And for almost completely opposite reasons, it brings me great dread to share that I am absolutely terrified for my sweet Akilah. This season, she happily speaks about her sister and nephew several times. She also gives Nugget (still processing this one…R.I.P.) a detailed account of all the wonderful things they’d do at the fair. This is an overt sign that she’s failing to fully submit to the circumstances of the Wilderness (note that no one besides Ben even mentions someone outside of the cabin crew this season). To make matters worse, she is the only person in the hunt who is noticeably empty-handed. And if that wasn’t enough, she’s the one to tell the group, “we can still get him out of there,” highlighting that she still hasn’t completely converted.
As we continue to watch this story unfold, the Wilderness reminds us to not look for “good” or “bad” but for examples that magnify a character’s will to survive. It underscores that in the end, this has always been a story about survival. The present day timeline is a tale of unspoken trauma and how if left untreated it can ruin the lives of the survivors and those who love them most. With each episode, the Yellowjackets writers will continue to test the limits to which we can extend empathy and I am truly thrilled and grateful to be on this ride!
---
TLDR: As a character, the Wilderness has always been present in the story. It signifies their dwindling hope and their growing desperation. Eventually, It becomes reduced to being the willing decider responsible for the actions the cabin crew must commit to survive. Because of this, the teens don’t view their actions through a “good or bad” lens more so than a required one. In that case, our girls are the “bad” ones. “Spill” symbolizes the blood needed to spill for survival. This doesn’t always have to mean human blood. The known survivors all have pre- and post-crash characteristics/experiences that play a distinct role in their survival. The teens lost to “natural” causes either fail to truly understand the gravity of their circumstances or evolve in a way that suggests they do. Dark Tai is the embodiment of Tai’s ego. Mari and/or Coach Ben may live. Akilah might unfortunately be the next YJ on the chopping block.
