How to Pay Hulu Outside in USA
2023.06.01 03:34 harry-jg How to Pay Hulu Outside in USA
Can't access Hulu outside the United States? It's as if the universe has conspired against you, demanding you provide a US credit card and asking you to physically be in the country. This becomes particularly vexing when you're on a vacation in, say, Paris, and all you want is to binge-watch your favourite show while munching on a croissant. Turns out, renewing your subscription can be as complicated as explaining the plot of a time-travel movie to your grandmother.
So here's the trick: You need a VPN. Hulu, being the sly fox that it is, looks at your IP address to see if you're within the good ol' USA. But a VPN, with its digital cloak of invisibility, lets you masquerade as a Yank, regardless of your actual whereabouts. Meaning, you could be sipping sake in Tokyo or riding a camel in Egypt, but Hulu will think you're eating apple pie in the heartland.
Through diligent labour, my team and I scrutinized over 60 VPNs designed to finagle Hulu's geoblocks. And standing tall among the crowd, we have ExpressVPN. It's the Brad Pitt of VPNs, offering multiple US servers and lightning-fast speeds to let you access Hulu without as much as a hiccup. And just to sweeten the deal, you can take ExpressVPN for a spin without any risk, as it's protected by a 30-day money-back guarantee. If it doesn't tickle your fancy, getting your money back is as easy as pie.
Getting Cozy with Hulu Globally: A VPN's Role in Your Streaming Escapades
Ever tried to access Hulu outside the United States? It's like attempting to communicate with a mime—nearly impossible and often met with an unamused silence. Hulu, with its treasure trove of binge-worthy content, unfortunately, dons an armor of licensing restrictions that keep it securely tethered to the Land of the Free. Its digital gatekeepers, aptly called geoblocks, detect the non-US IP address and give you a digital cold shoulder. And if you thought that's the end of your woes, there's more! Setting up a new Hulu account would need a US credit card, a hurdle that's hard to leap.
In these dire times, one can count on the prowess of a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Picture a VPN as a savvy undercover agent, masterfully disguising your IP address as if you're lounging on a couch somewhere in New York, even when you're actually sunbathing in Barcelona. A VPN juggles your internet traffic, directing it through a server of your choice, thereby replacing your original IP address with a shiny new one from the chosen location. This high-tech sleight of hand can bamboozle streaming platforms into thinking you're within their allowed borders.
In layman's terms, pick a VPN server located in the US and voila! You get a US IP address. When Hulu gazes upon this borrowed IP, it believes you're a proud dweller of Uncle Sam's land, lifting the barriers. Suddenly, signing up, renewing subscriptions, and accessing your beloved Hulu shows become a cakewalk, no matter where on the globe you're perched.
ExpressVPN
Imagine you're trying to sprint a marathon on stilts - pretty inconvenient and unstable, right? Now swap those stilts with a pair of world-class running shoes, and suddenly you're Usain Bolt. That's precisely the upgrade ExpressVPN offers when you're trying to subscribe to Hulu or streaming in Ultra High Definition.
In a test of virtual athleticism, ExpressVPN's New York, Dallas, and Chicago servers gave a stunning performance. Clocking in at an average speed of 91 Mbps, they fell only a hair short of my prime 100 Mbps connection. It’s like running a race and placing a close second to a cheetah. Given that you need merely a humble 25 Mbps to stream in UHD, this VPN crosses the finish line with excessive energy to spare. Even when I indulged in a hair-raising episode of American Horror Story, buffering was a foreign concept.
In addition to its impressive speed, ExpressVPN offers a roster of 24 US locations, akin to a digital buffet of options for connecting to Hulu on your world travels. Even from the other side of the world (9,153 km away, to be exact), my New Jersey server stood like a steadfast guard, ensuring my connection remained unbroken.
What's more, ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer acts as a secret decoder ring, enabling you to watch Hulu on devices that usually don't shake hands with VPNs. PlayStation, Xbox, or even that one smart TV you got at a Black Friday sale years ago; all can be brought into the fold. The setup process was quicker than making a microwave popcorn bag. Simply jot down a code from your ExpressVPN account dashboard, feed it into your smart TV’s network settings, and voila! I found myself catching up on Hulu shows on my antiquated Samsung Tizen TV with no hiccups.
While ExpressVPN might ask for a few more pennies than its fellow VPN services, the sheer performance justifies the price tag. It's like paying extra for a VIP concert ticket - you're assured of the best experience. And with a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can test drive it on Hulu, no strings attached. And if you decide it's not your cup of tea, their customer support is there to process your refund without quibble. They’re rather nice about it, really.
CyberGhostVPN
Picture CyberGhost as the highly competent butler of your digital mansion, ensuring a seamless Hulu streaming experience. This ace up the VPN sleeve not only provides fast and reliable connections but serves them with a silver platter specifically designed for Hulu. Imagine a world where buffering is as extinct as dial-up internet, all thanks to CyberGhost’s Hulu-optimized servers. I frolicked in this paradise while renewing my subscription using their Miami server.
Using CyberGhost's Hulu-optimized servers is like walking through an automatic door; it's a breeze. The interface is as user-friendly as a Labrador puppy. A simple peck on your keyboard typing "Hulu" in the search bar under the "For streaming" tab, and you're given a list of servers that are specially designed to work magic on Hulu. Better still, some of these servers have undergone a digital personal training regimen to optimize their performance for Fire Stick and Android TV specifically.
While CyberGhost may not be as predictably consistent as ExpressVPN, akin to a weather forecast, its connections still hold strong. Think of it like a relay race with the US, UK, and Australia servers, each passing the baton without letting the speed dip below an 82 Mbps average. I was treated to uninterrupted feasts of "Santa Evita" and "House of the Dragon" in Ultra High Definition, without so much as a single awkward pause or hiccup.
Private Internet Access
Imagine a scenario where you have a myriad of IP addresses at your disposal for streaming Hulu like a monarch, that's exactly what PIA offers. This VPN is a playground teeming with server options in the US, reducing your chances of being in the middle of an overcrowded digital mosh pit. Trust me, you'd prefer your own breathing room when renewing your Hulu subscription, which I did with as much ease as butter sliding off a hot knife. With such an extensive server network, you have a buffet of alternative routes should Hulu unexpectedly pull the roadblock on one.
What sets PIA apart from the crowd is its penchant for personalization. Think of it as the bespoke suit of VPN apps. This little wonder comes with an array of widgets that are as flexible as a yoga instructor, ready to twist and bend to suit your interface aesthetic. Additionally, it hands you the reins of encryption, allowing you to choose between the Fort Knox of security - the AES 256-bit encryption, or the slightly more fleet-footed but still quite secure AES 128-bit encryption.
Now, this plethora of customization options could be a bit like being lost in a tech version of Narnia for the newly initiated. It's a lot to take in. But give it a little time, a few exploratory clicks and swipes, and you'll find the app's interface becomes as familiar and easy to navigate as your favorite neighborhood bistro.
Five Secret Passages to Hulu Land Without a US Credit Card in 2023
Juggling through the nuances of signing up for Hulu, especially without a US credit card, can make your head spin faster than a hamster on a wheel. So let's pop the lid off Pandora's box and unveil the five undercover methods to bring Hulu to your fingertips.
Before you sprint into action, let's cross off a couple of quick checks:
Make sure to equip yourself with a VPN. Any VPN on my coveted shortlist should do the trick, but I would tilt my hat towards ExpressVPN. It zips along at breakneck speeds and boasts a generous offering of US servers to select from
Now you're in the right gear, but you need to be in the right place. As Hulu only pays house visits to those who reside in the US (virtually, of course), that's where you should connect.
With these quick checks done and dusted, you're ready to proceed. Brace yourself as we unveil the five secret scrolls to gain access to the tantalizing world of Hulu.
MyGiftCardSupply: Your Key to Unlock Hulu's Magic Box
A Hulu gift card from MyGiftCardSupply is your golden ticket to the land of unlimited entertainment.
Step 1: Buying a ticket. Venture into the online bazaar of MyGiftCardSupply, and procure a Hulu gift card ranging from $25 to $100. The amount depends on how deep you want to dive into the ocean of Hulu content. Be sure to sign up if you haven't already - think of it as a friendly handshake.
Step 2: Sniff out the code. Once the gift card purchase is complete, you'll receive an email with the precious code. Open it, and gently copy the code.
Step 3: Claim your prize. Stride confidently to Hulu's redemption page, type in your hard-earned code, and create your account. Do remember to use a US address and zip code when signing up – they are quite particular about that.
Step 4: Let the show begin. Slide into Hulu's log-in page and gently type in your shiny new credentials.
Step 5: The Grand Finale. Now it's time to sit back, relax, and bask in the glory of endless entertainment on Hulu. Step into your personal streaming universe and enjoy the show!
Hitching a Ride on iTunes US: Your Unconventional Route to Hulu
Now, let's stroll down a different route, this time, a path known as 'iTunes US.'
Step 1: Set up camp in the Land of Apple. Visit Apple's website and pitch your digital tent by creating a new account. Consider this your personal American outpost in the universe of iTunes.
Step 2: Stock up on provisions. Replenish your digital coffers either directly through iTunes or via a US iTunes gift card, which is akin to your secret stash of apple cider in the cellar.
Step 3: Summon Hulu. Type "Hulu" into the search bar and download the app. Much like calling a pet, it'll come running and install itself onto your device.
Step 4: Enter the realm of Hulu. Use your iTunes funds to either get a shiny new plan or renew an existing subscription, and then log into your Hulu account. This is you officially checking into the grand Hulu Hotel.
Step 5: Savour the spectacle. With all these steps complete, you're now in a position to pay for and enjoy your Hulu account. It's time to kick back and indulge in the smorgasbord of entertainment that Hulu has to offer.
Hopping onto the Hulu Train with a Prepaid US Card: A Thrifty Globetrotter's Guide
Let's now venture down a pragmatic avenue, namely the 'Prepaid US Card' route.
The first station is "Prepaid US Card Central". You'll need to navigate your way to VISA or MasterCard, where you can choose your ticket – the prepaid card.
Next, we arrive at "Funds Station". Here, you need to fuel up your prepaid card. This can be done directly or by transferring money from your bank account, given that your card of choice supports such cheery transfers.
Having acquired your ticket and made sure it's packed with funds, it's time to board the Hulu Express at the "Hulu Account Terminal". Here, you'll need to check-in, select a subscription plan, and jot down the necessary particulars.
We're almost there. The last stop before you start your entertainment journey is "Registration Point". Here, you pay for the service using your shiny new prepaid card. Now, if this doesn't work for some reason, perhaps the ticket machine is being obstinate, don't fret – just try the gift card method instead.
With the ticketing process complete, you're all set to start watching. It's time to sit back, kick off your shoes, and let the Hulu Express whisk you away into a world of non-stop entertainment, right outside of the USA.
PayPal Your Way to Hulu Paradise: A Modern Maverick's Approach
Welcome to the "PayPal method", a trail favored by modern mavericks, digital nomads, and online shopping aficionados.
Begin this journey by constructing your own digital finance fortress – a PayPal account. You'll need to swing by PayPal and ensure you're setting up a US account. Now, it's imperative that you get this right, because Hulu can be a bit snobbish when it comes to foreign PayPal accounts. If setting up a US PayPal account starts to feel like trying to lasso a greased pig, simply revert to our old reliable – the gift card method.
Having established your PayPal account, you're now ready for the next leg of the journey. Head on over to Hulu, strut your stuff, and log in using your credentials.
Next up, it's time to pay the piper... or rather, the subscription. If your account is a newborn, fresh out of the internet womb, you can also kick off a free trial.
With these steps accomplished, it's time to kick back and start watching. Dive headlong into the ocean of your favorite Hulu shows, and swim around in the thrill of it all.
StatesCard: Your Magic Carpet Ride to Hulu Bingeing
Behold, the wonders of StatesCard, the 21st-century magic carpet ride to the land of Hulu bingeing!
Your journey starts at the port of StatesCard, where you'll need to carve out your digital presence by clicking the "Sign Up" button. Having successfully become a part of the club, add a little bit of that digital money to make it official.
Your next stop is Hulu. Log in with your carefully crafted credentials or take a bold step and create a whole new identity for yourself (strictly on Hulu, of course).
Once settled in, it's time to pay the virtual ferryman. Use the card information you secured from your new friend, StatesCard, to pay for or renew your Hulu subscription. If you do this right, you'll have successfully purchased your ticket to endless entertainment.
Having accomplished these milestones, you're now fully armed and ready to embark on the Hulu adventure. Sit back, relax, and let the world of your favorite Hulu shows envelop you.

FULL ARTICLE NeoVolta Poised for California’s NEM Incentives to Pair Solar with Battery Storage - Additional $630 Million in California State Funding Set Aside to Support Residential Low-Income Solar Plus Storage Adopters
- NeoVolta Poised for California’s NEM Incentives to Pair Solar with Battery Storage
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 26, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NeoVolta Inc. (NASDAQ: NEOV) – NeoVolta Inc., manufacturer of Smart Energy Storage Solutions, announced today that it expects California’s recently updated Net Energy Metering (NEM) program to drive increased demand for energy storage systems.
On December 15, 2022, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) issued a decision to update the NEM tariff to promote consumer adoption of solar and battery storage. The program will go into effect on April 13, 2023. According to the CPUC, the move was designed to financially incentivize Californians to install both battery and solar systems.
The CPUC stated that the current NEM 2.0 program was not aligned with California’s grid reliability and climate goals, noting that the increased use of electricity between 4 and 9 p.m. causes dependence on fossil fuel gas plants to meet the demand. With the battery storage incentive, the CPUC hopes to see an increased adoption of residential energy storage that will better support the needs of the grid, with customers saving self-generated solar energy for use in the evening hours.
An additional $630 million in state funding has been set aside by the California State Legislature for residential low-income solar plus battery storage adopters. The decision bolsters federal incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act for solar and battery storage.
It’s important to note that NEM 3.0 is not retroactive. Rooftop solar systems installed under NEM 2.0 will remain under that policy for a 20-year grandfathering period. This means existing rooftop solar owners who add a battery after the April 13 deadline will not be subject to NEM 3.0.
“We expect that NEM 3.0 will make Californians more aware of their energy consumption, encouraging them to conserve energy and pair rooftop solar systems with battery storage,” said NeoVolta CEO Brent Willson. “Californians who adopt this strategy will dramatically reduce their electrical bills while increasing their energy resiliency during periods of prolonged blackouts, fires, and flooding.”
California’s vast solar plus storage market has a dramatic impact on the grid. California has about 12 GW of distributed solar generation already installed, equal to nearly 25% of peak demand statewide. California also has more than 80,000 customer-owned batteries connected to the grid, with a storage potential of 900 MW, according to a September 2022 study by the California Solar & Storage Association.

Recent News NeoVolta’s Backup System Saves MDX Labs’ Lifesaving Medications During Multiple Grid Outages - Commercial Battery Backup System Has Prevented the Loss of MDX’s Critical Functions and Thousands of Dollars in Inventory During Numerous Power Failures
SAN DIEGO, May 09, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NeoVolta Inc. (NASDAQ: NEOV) – NeoVolta Inc., manufacturer of Smart Energy Storage Solutions, has kept MDX Labs protected during multiple grid outages with reliable battery backup. Thanks to NeoVolta, the laboratory’s critical functions (refrigeration, server, and lights) have kept running, saving thousands of dollars while sustaining lifesaving medications and vaccines.
Founded in 2020, Henderson-based MDX Labs is the top privately held molecular and clinical diagnostic laboratory in the state of Nevada. MDX provides on-site testing services to a range of manufacturers, casinos, entertainers, restaurants, and nonprofit organizations, and it is the official overflow laboratory for the Southern Nevada Health District.

MDX Labs houses large quantities of vaccines, patient samples, and medications that require refrigeration. When grid outages occurred in the past, MDX would often lose tens of thousands of dollars in product and face periods of product unavailability while awaiting restock. In late 2021, MDX began searching for a battery backup system and discovered NeoVolta, which features a clean lithium iron phosphate battery and a hybrid inverter that can accept 208-volt power connections. NeoVolta can also charge from the power grid, eliminating the need for solar installation. In March 2022, MDX Labs installed NeoVolta’s NV14 Energy Storage System.
“Being able to support commercial facilities that are powered with 208-volt electricity is an amazing capability. Transformers are not required, which saves customers thousands of dollars and eliminates loud equipment that gives off radiant heat,” said Brent Willson, CEO of NeoVolta. “Our energy storage solutions are a very smart investment, especially considering the cost and consequence of an outage that would result in the loss of vital medical supplies and medications. We are thrilled to be partnering with MDX, a world-class clinical diagnostic laboratory.”

This person was a mess.
Me being the younger sibling only fueled his fragile ego. He sought someone he could "raise", help grow into a man of his image; and a punching bag, someone he could walk all over with no consequence. Always called himself "grown" when challenged, always came to me to vent. Anything I was suffering with was met with long patronizing lectures.
I was "supposed" to allow it because he's "grown". I had to "take it for what it is."
All of this contradictory, abusive behavior; yet preached endlessly about being a man and taking accountability. Can threaten to beat, fuck over or at worst, kill you at his angriest; but God forbid you give a perceived slight.
Has never given a hint of true remorse. Only "pseudo-reflection", followed by an "apology." He will act as if nothing's ever happened, as if he's never said or did anything so awful. Will get angry at you for wanting a distance. It's like you're less than a subhuman to him and your his property because of relation.
Valued "respect" more than being a respectable person. I gave so much energy, trust and money because he was my brother. I cared too fucking much. He constantly talked about how he needed support and was trying to get his life in order and I hate myself for entertaining it, cause that's what he wanted..
I genuinely believed I had a brother to confide in. I really did and really tried to see past it all but he's far too unstable and uncaring to be dealt with.
This "man" violated my right to be a fucking human.
Always stigmatized me as the "lesser man", "beta" whatever. I was weak because of my different upbringing, my mental illness, I didn't have "real life experience", I didn't talk about sex with women or my dealing with them in general so something was "wrong with me." Guess what he would watch on YouTube though. Alpha male videos, dealing with women. Dude, this is so real.
Since age 13, he instilled whatever he could to have me depend on him and put him in such a pedestal. The most tragic and saddest part for me was how he would claim to love me, wanted what was best and wanted me to be better than him despite the true nature of it. Like he's deluded himself.
Hurtfully paradoxical. I've never hated this strong. These were only bits of how he was. These being towards myself. He was a monster to others as well.
I could write a novel on this low vibrant human. The pain and mental toll is too great. We don't talk and never will. This may be cruel to say but I wouldn't in the slightest be phased by his passing.

2023.05.31 08:09 Holiday-Possible29 The Armored Terran 5
Hey everyone! I had a lot of things going on for the past couple of days, so sorry this came out a bit later than I was expecting. In this one, we get more worldbuilding. I hope that you enjoy!
First Previous Next
---------------
Aeva
“By all the stars in the universe this thing is heavy!” I practically shouted as I tried to lug the Terran’s ‘mech’ back to his room. “What is even in here? Stones used for combat rituals?”
I heard Alex chuckle on my shoulder. “Well, if you want to know, there’s a water filtration system, an air filtration system, the ocular system, enough rations to survive a month or so, the moving parts that actually make the mech move, some extremely proprietary technology that I’m not supposed to even know about, the power generator and its various backups, and the batteries that run the thing.” I took a brief break as I leaned against a wall and looked at Alex. “Oh! That actually reminds me! You remember when we were talking, and I mentioned methane?” I nodded. “Well, like I said earlier, we don’t breathe it. But, the batteries and power generator on this bad boy actually runs on methane, which is why you see it being put into the suits every now and again. These things may run forever, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t require fuel every so often.”
I grunted in surprise. “Really? You actually use methane? And how is it that you are able to fit so much into such a small package? If we tried to fit everything you just mentioned it would probably be half the size of the ship!”
“Yeah, we actually use methane. I don’t really understand the science behind it, but something about it is a kind of super fuel for some kind of chain reaction or another. But as to why we can fit so much into so little space, it really has to do with size being the main factor. Us humans, being so small, make things so small and efficient that when you build on a scale like the mech, it’s kind of hard not to follow that design philosophy. This case, like all cases in human history, results in each system except for a couple being so redundant that it never sees use. But, like I said, humans don’t really like empty space in their creations, hence the redundancies in the first place. Does that make sense?”
“I suppose it does,” I said as I tried to pick the mech back up. “But couldn’t you have made it lighter?”
That got a loud laugh out of tiny human. “Well, there’s only so much that the research and development department can do to make it this lightweight.”
“THIS is lightweight? I can barely carry this thing!” I shouted as I rounded the final corner.
The goal is in sight. Just a bit longer. “Well, compared to the first generation mechs that were made when humans still fought wars against each other about half a century ago, this is a feather in comparison,” he said as we finally got to the door. He thought for a moment as I punched in the commands for the door to open. “Come to think of it though, mechs really didn’t have a military advantage to them because all it would take to destroy one is a single dickhead with a way to call a stonk on your position.”
I stopped. “A stonk?” I asked slowly.
“Yeah, a concentrated artillery bombardment. Do you guys not have those?”
“No, we do,” I said defensively. “We just don’t call them that.”
“Well, what do you call them?” Alex asked.
“Just concentrated artillery bombardments, I guess. We don’t really have a term for it.” I said, finally having gotten the door open.
“Well, that’s boring” said Alex with a snort.
“Oh wow!” I said as I looked around the room. It looked like the workshop of a tiny creature that just happened to live in this space as well. Considering Alex, that assumption wasn’t all that far off. In the corner nearest to the bed was a stand that had hooks on it. I immediately registered this as where he must have put his mech whenever he wasn’t using it. Next to the stand was what looked like a tiny elevator that not only serviced the mech stand but the bed as well. And since these Terrans seemed keen on having redundancy after redundancy in their systems and objects in general, right next to the elevator was no less than three sets of ladders that ran the height of the tiny structures. My eyes were then drawn to the rest of the room. The closet was almost completely empty except for some boxes that were clearly meant to be openable by someone of Alex’s height. The desk, on the other hand was a completely different story. It had the same elevator ladder situation as the bed did. It was also absolutely covered from end to end in various tiny machines and gadgets that I didn’t even begin to understand what they were. The bed was the only thing that looked normal in the entire room.
“I like what you did with the place,” I said, slowly taking it all in. “You’ve got a lot of stuff going on here.”
Alex shuffled around nervously. “Well, it’s not like I have very many visitors here. And considering with how bad at cleaning I am, this is extremely clean for me!”
“Riiiiight.” I said making my voice drip with as much sarcasm as I can. “Sure, I believe you. Oh, by the way, where do you want this?” I asked as I hefted up the mech and tried not to drop it, for fear of denting the floor of the ship.
“The mech you can leave on the stand.” Alex said. “It should automatically connect with the diagnostic system that I have on the desk to give me a more accurate diagnosis of the problem than the onboard computer will.”
I didn’t even bother answering him as I strained and struggled to get the machine onto the hooks along the various parts of the stand. After a couple of minutes of struggling with that, I finally managed to get it to stand on its own. With that out of the way, I collapsed onto the bed with a groan, accidentally throwing Alex off my shoulder only for him to land harmlessly on the pillow. “Remind me to never do a favor for you ever again! My muscles are on fire!” I groaned. I looked over to see Alex still trying to regain his footing on the unstable pillow.
“Well, I’m not going to apologize for you being too nice to say no!” he retorted with a laugh. As soon as he got his balance, he made his way over to the elevator and made his way down to the floor. I couldn’t help but look down at him as he slowly made his way to the desk, up the elevator, and finally to what appeared to be a central computer sitting on the desk. He started to furiously type as he closed various programs just as quickly as he opened them again. I started to dose off for a couple of minutes when he clapped his hands rather loudly and said “Aha! That’s the issue! This shouldn’t take much time to fix at all!”
“What?” I asked, jolting awake while not fully processing what he said.
He quickly turned around and looked a bit shocked that I spoke up. “To be honest, I kind of forgot that you were here. But I was just saying that I figured out the problem. Like I was saying before, the battery got hit, and that’s not very good because it kind of needs those to run. In any case that should be easy to fix, it shouldn’t take any more time than it would to just fabricate a whole new battery. The tricky part, however, is the movement matrix for the lower half of the mech was damaged a lot, and I don’t have the schematics to fabricate another.”
“Couldn’t you just get the schematics?” I asked.
He thought for a moment. “Well, I could, but that would take jumping through more legal loopholes than I would care to go through.” He paused for a moment before continuing. “I mean, at this point it would probably be a lot faster and cheaper to just fabricate a wheelchair or something like that so that I can stay mobile without the lower half of the mech working.”
I thought for a moment. “Getting a wheelchair will be a bit difficult because medicine has gotten so good that needing one is kind of a thing of the past. But I’m sure that the fabricator can cook something up for your needs.”
“Yeah, your probably right. I wonder if-“ Alex was cut off by the sound of his personal communicator going off.
I sat up and looked at him curiously as all the color in his face seemed to drain away, leaving him whiter than fresh snow on a mountain. “What’s wrong?” I asked.
“It’s a message from the United Terran Security Council. It says, ‘Due to a confirmed Scenario 7, effective immediately, all nonessential Terrans not in Terran space are required to report to their nearest embassy.’” He looked up at me. “This is bad, very bad.”

2023.05.31 02:14 svet_sedov China SVET Review and Analysis
The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the world’s emerging superpower. However, it is also a country facing a growing number of economical, social, and ecological issues.
China’s GDP exceeds $11 trillion dollars, making it the second largest in the world after the US. Despite this, its rate of economic growth has sharply dropped to 6% in 2016 from 9% in 2013. The PRC has a highly centralized and government-managed economy, along with strictly regulated political life. Notwithstanding, some Chinese provinces are allowed to pursue independent economic policies.
China officially has a multi-party political system. However, in practice, there is only one party that holds significant power — the Communist Party of China (CPC), which was founded on July 1, 1921. The CPC’s ideology is based on the Marxist-Leninist doctrine introduced by Karl Marx (a Prussian economist) and Friedrich Engels (a German philosopher and businessman) in the 1880s. This doctrine was later supplemented by the theory of Socialism by Vladimir Ulyanov-Lenin (a Russian politician and revolutionary).
The doctrine postulates that society is composed of two major economic classes — the working people (exploited) and the bourgeoisie (exploiters). According to this theory, a global economic crisis will lead to a revolution, with the working class taking control of the world and the bourgeoisie being eliminated. Ultimately, capitalism will cease to exist, and communism (where goods are freely available and nobody works) will prevail. Mao Zedong, the founder of the CPC, adapted this theory to the Chinese context by including Chinese farmers in the definition of the working class.
The PRC government plays a central role in both the political and economic aspects of China. The CPC governs China through an administrative pyramid, with the Central Committee (Politburo) and the National Congress at the top.
The National Congress is comprised of over 2000 delegates who are elected mainly from local CPC committee members. This assembly convenes for a two-week session in Beijing once a year. The 22 Chinese provinces are managed by regional governors appointed by the Central Committee, and their primary objective is to fulfill the CPC’s goal of achieving GDP growth. The government operates based on five-year plans.
The list of other political parties in China includes:
Revolutionary Committee of the Kuomintang (53,000 members, representing Taiwan residents in China); China Democratic League (130,000 members, mainly composed of the middle class); China Democratic National Construction Association (69,000 members, consisting of entrepreneurs); China Association for Promoting Democracy (64,000 members, primarily intellectuals); Chinese Peasants’ and Workers’ Democratic Party (65,000 members, representing government employees); Zhigongdang of China (15,000 members, representing overseas Chinese); Jiusan Society (68,000 members, comprising individual professionals); Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League (1,600 members, including prominent Chinese celebrities). All of these parties are aligned with and support the CPC in its major initiatives and policies. Opposition to the CPC is not tolerated.
Economic Review
Administratively China consists of 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities directly under the central government, and 2 special administrative regions.
China’s main economic regions:
Eastern Coastal Region: This region includes provinces like Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, as well as Shanghai. It has been a major driver of China’s economic growth due to its proximity to international trade routes and its well-developed infrastructure. The Eastern Coastal Region contributes approximately 45–50% to China’s GDP. Western Region: The Western Region comprises provinces such as Sichuan, Chongqing, and Yunnan, as well as the Tibet Autonomous Region. This region is known for its rich natural resources, including minerals, energy, and agricultural products. The Western Region contributes around 15–20% to China’s GDP. Central Region: The Central Region includes provinces such as Henan, Hubei, and Hunan. It is characterized by a mix of industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, and services. The Central Region contributes roughly 15–20% to China’s GDP. Northeastern Region: The Northeastern Region consists of provinces like Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang. Historically, this region was a vital industrial base for heavy machinery, mining, and manufacturing. However, it has faced economic challenges in recent years. The Northeastern Region contributes approximately 7–10% to China’s GDP. Pearl River Delta: The Pearl River Delta is a highly urbanized and economically dynamic region located in Guangdong Province. It encompasses cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Dongguan. Known as a manufacturing and export hub, it has played a pivotal role in China’s economic growth. The Pearl River Delta contributes around 10–15% to China’s GDP. Yangtze River Delta: The Yangtze River Delta region covers Shanghai and the surrounding provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. It is one of the most economically developed and prosperous regions in China. With a strong focus on finance, manufacturing, and services, the Yangtze River Delta contributes approximately 20–25% to China’s GDP. China’s Latest Economic Updates
Stock Market
The Shanghai Composite rose from 2892 in November 2022 to 3284 (as of May 17, 2023).
Currency
Yuan rose from 6.7 in Jan 2023 to 7.0 as of May 17, 2023
Employment
In March 2023, China’s surveyed urban unemployment rate decreased to 5.3%, the lowest in seven months, from February’s 5.6%. Those aged 25–59 saw their jobless rate drop to 4.3% from 4.8% in February, while those aged 16–24 increased to 19.6% from 18.1%. The unemployment rate in 31 large cities and towns also declined to 5.5% from 5.7%.
Employees’ average weekly working hours across China increased to 48.7 in March from 47.9 in February. In the first quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate slightly declined to 5.5% from 5.6% in Q4 2022. The government has set a target of around 5.5% for the year, with the creation of approximately 12 million new urban jobs. China has also set a 2023 GDP growth target of about 5%.
GDP
China’s economy grew by 2.2% (SA) in Q1–2023, the third consecutive quarter of expansion following the removal of travel restrictions in Dec-2022 and a three-year crackdown on tech firms and property. However, the uneven recovery showed that while consumption, services, and infrastructure spending picked up, slowing inflation and rising bank savings led to doubts about demand.
In Mar-2023, the central bank cut lenders’ reserve requirements for the first time in 2023 and Beijing promised more fiscal stimulus.
Inflation
In April of 2023, China’s inflation rate declined to 0.1% from the previous month’s 0.7%, which was lower than anticipated. The decrease in prices for both food and non-food items was due to an unstable economic recovery after the enclosure policy was lifted. Food prices fell notably due to lower prices of pork and fresh vegetables, while non-food prices fell due to lower prices for transportation and housing. Inflation for health remained steady, while education costs increased.
Trade
Country’s exports rose unexpectedly by 14.8% YoY to a high of USD 315.59B in March 2023, rebounding sharply from a 6.8% drop in January-February combined and beating market consensus of a 7% fall. It was the first advance in shipments since September 2022 as Beijing boosts trade with developed countries and emerging economies. Steel products (53.2%) and refined products (35.1%) were the largest contributors. Exports to China’s largest partner, ASEAN, rose 35.43%, while those to the EU (3.38%) and Russia (136.43%) also increased. Conversely, exports fell to Japan (-4.8%), Taiwan (-27.6%), and the US (-7.68%), while they expanded to Australia (23.7%) and South Korea (11.3%).
SVET Analysis Space (A-):
Advantages:
Strategic location: China is located in the heart of Asia, which gives it a strategic location to engage in trade and diplomacy with neighboring countries. China also has access to the Pacific Ocean, which allows it to trade with countries in the Americas and Oceania. Natural resources: China has significant reserves of coal, iron ore, and other minerals. The country is also the world’s largest producer of rare earth elements, which are essential in the manufacturing of high-tech products. This resource base has fueled China’s economic growth over the past few decades. Agricultural productivity: China has a large and fertile agricultural base, which allows it to produce significant amounts of food. The country is the world’s largest producer of rice and wheat, and it has made significant advances in crop yields through the use of technology and modern farming practices. Disadvantages:
Natural disasters: China is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and typhoons, which can cause significant damage to infrastructure and disrupt the economy. Resource depletion: China’s rapid economic growth has led to the depletion of some of its natural resources, such as water and arable land. This depletion can lead to environmental degradation and food insecurity in the future. Energy dependence: Despite having significant reserves of coal, China is also heavily dependent on imported oil and gas to meet its energy needs. This dependence makes the country vulnerable to supply disruptions and price fluctuations on the global market. Voice (C):
Pluses:
Stability: The Chinese government prioritizes maintaining stability and order in the country, which has helped to ensure social cohesion and economic growth. Economic development: China’s political system has enabled it to pursue policies that have led to rapid economic growth and development over the past few decades. Nationalism: The Chinese government emphasizes the importance of national unity and pride, which has helped to foster a strong sense of identity among Chinese citizens. Strategic planning: The government’s focus on long-term planning has enabled China to achieve its ambitious economic and geopolitical goals. Minuses:
Lack of political freedom: The Chinese government tightly controls political expression and restricts freedom of speech, assembly, and association, which has led to criticism from human rights groups. State control: The government’s control over the economy and key industries can stifle innovation and limit the potential for private sector growth. Lack of transparency: The Chinese government is known for being opaque in its decision-making processes, which can lead to uncertainty for businesses and investors. Human rights violations: The government’s policies towards ethnic minorities, such as the Uighur population in Xinjiang, have been criticized by the international community for alleged human rights abuses. Ethos (B-):
Han Chinese: The Han Chinese are the largest ethnic group in China, accounting for over 90% of the population. They enjoy the most favorable treatment from the government and have access to the best jobs, education, and healthcare. However, this has led to some resentment from minority groups who feel marginalized. Ethnic minorities: There are 55 recognized ethnic minority groups in China, including Tibetans, Uighurs, Mongolians, and others. They often face discrimination and limited opportunities for advancement. Some minority groups, such as the Uighurs in Xinjiang, have also been subject to government repression. Rural residents: China’s rural population is around 40% of the total population. They often have limited access to education, healthcare, and job opportunities compared to urban residents. However, the government has implemented policies to try to bridge this gap, such as investing in rural infrastructure and offering subsidies to farmers. Urban residents: China’s urban population is growing rapidly and has access to more job opportunities, education, and healthcare than rural residents. However, this has also led to increased competition for resources and rising income inequality. Time (B-):
Positive scenarios:
Continued economic growth: China’s economy has been growing rapidly over the past few decades, and it is likely to continue. This could result in increased prosperity and an improved standard of living for many Chinese citizens. Technological advancement: China has made significant strides in technology and innovation, and this trend is likely to continue. This could result in China becoming a global leader in technology, creating new industries and high-paying jobs. Improved infrastructure: China has been investing heavily in infrastructure, such as high-speed rail and new airports, which can improve transportation and connectivity and stimulate economic growth. Increased global influence: As China’s economy and political influence continue to grow, it could become a dominant player on the global stage, shaping international politics and economics. Negative scenarios:
Environmental degradation: China’s rapid economic growth has resulted in severe environmental problems, such as air and water pollution. If this trend continues, it could have severe consequences for public health and the environment. Social inequality: China’s economic growth has also created significant social inequalities, with a wealthy urban elite and a poorer rural population. This could result in social unrest and instability. Political repression: The Chinese government’s increasing control over the media and the internet, and its crackdowns on dissent, could result in greater political repression. Economic slowdown: China’s economic growth has already slowed in recent years, and if this trend continues, it could result in job losses and economic instability, which could have global consequences. Overall
The Chinese reforms were initiated by Deng Xiaoping (1978–1992) in the late 1970s. These reforms aimed to open up China to foreign investment, encourage private enterprise, and modernize various sectors of the economy. As part of these reforms, the number of directly controlled industries was drastically reduced. Additionally, the number of price-controlled goods decreased from approximately 300 to around 20.
With that said, the government still exercises strict regulatory oversight and establishes guidelines and policies that private businesses must adhere to. State-owned enterprises (SOEs) continue to play a significant role in the Chinese economy and frequently receive preferential treatment and support from the government.
Those policies were continued under Jiang Zemin (1993–2003), during which China was accepted into the World Trade Organization (WTO) on December 11, 2001, and also under Hu Jintao (2003–2013). However, when Xi Jinping (2013-present) assumed power, there was a gradual shift towards increased direct control over the economy and the establishment of a more centralized system. This change was accompanied by the active implementation of mass-surveillance technologies.
That happened synchronously with the end of the world’s latest 80-year-long generational cycle, which began in the 1940s and 1950s. This cycle was characterized by massive political decentralization, resulting in the emergence of several dozen new states between 1940 and 2000. After the 2007–2008 debts debacle, this cycle of economic expansion, driven by the exploitation of readily available resources, came to a close. However, it was artificially extended for the next 15 years through the easing of monetary policies pursued simultaneously by central banks worldwide.
That led to an unprecedented growth of private businesses worldwide. It was accompanied by increased prosperity and a rising level of education across all segments of the population. Small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, particularly in the high-tech industry, began to assume leading positions in the economic landscape. However, this economic progress was not accompanied by significant political reforms.
The old class of hereditary, mostly populist politicians, who often lacked education, managed to stay in power throughout that period, largely due to the outdated electoral system based on indirect political representation. However, when blockchain technologies were utilized to establish algorithmic consensus and enable effective direct governance, this new system faced resistance from entrenched political clans in all countries, resulting in its suppression.
China is currently at the forefront of this trend, with its political class focused on leveraging high-tech advancements to achieve both economic efficiency and comprehensive political control. However, there are two significant obstacles that China faces along this path.
Firstly, China is confronted with a shrinking population. In recent years, the country has undergone a substantial demographic shift characterized by an aging population and a decline in the working-age population. This is partially attributed to the one-child policy that was enforced from 1979 to 2016, resulting in a diminished labor force and a growing proportion of elderly individuals.
Secondly, there is a culmination of the resource-exploration and expansionist phase of global economic growth, accompanied by escalating political and military tensions worldwide. This situation is likely to result in a reduction of China’s import markets and an increased dependence on a less-competitive domestic market. Consequently, this could potentially lead to a scenario of stagflation, characterized by stagnant economic growth coupled with high inflationary pressures.
Faced with these fundamental challenges, it is highly probable that China will resort to aggressive and militaristic policies in an attempt to expand its territory directly or enforce its economic dominance in the Asian region through alternative means.
China is expected to continue on its trajectory towards increased global dominance through local conflicts and enhanced technological control over the economy and population over the next 15–20 years. However, this trend could be altered by a new wave of decentralization, which would require a significant deviation from current policies.
Such a shift may occur when not only the current generation of older politicians, but also the subsequent one (which is likely to further reinforce the existing trend), is replaced by “enlightened” technocrats who advocate for a return to decentralized approaches in both politics and economics.

2023.05.30 01:40 NorthStar2801 I (17m) tried to kill myself when I was 13 and I am trying to be a better human being (I'm so sorry for the damn essay)
Before I type anything, I must say that I know that my family loves me, and that no matter what happens, they'll probably always be there for me, I love my aunt and our tiny age gap means we share similar interests in anime and what not, she's a fun human being, I just don't feel comfortable around her anymore
I live with my mom, grandma and my mother, my dad died when I was 13 in August, I have a working mother and a now properly working aunt who is going for masters this year
It was back in 2019, (yea lol I'm a child), it was mid may and my school had it's halfyearly exams, where everything from the past 6 months is on the tests and it was around this time that my Aunt got her first internship, she's 14 years older than me and is one of my legal guardians.
The exams were spread out in a span of 2 weeks with 11 exams, most of my exams beforehand were with horrid marks so I wanted to study properly and try to get better this time, but my Aunt didn't think so
She would always scold me (rightfully so) because I didn't study but this time she didn't give me a chance to prove myself, because of her internship she would leave very early and come home at 7/8 and be very stressed out, I'd always open the door because my mom comes home at 11 and my grandma sleeps early
One thing I now realise is that when she gets stressed, she gets a very short fuse, for days on end, I'd wake-up early, study for hours and would open the door to her coming home, but no matter how much I studied, no matter how much I worked hard for it, she always ALWAYS yelled at me for "Why aren't you studying?!","Why did you open the door so fast!","Why don't you show me what you written?! No not this this is probably old" and things like that.
But one day she ended it with "Well, if you're not gonna study, do you want to take a break from school?!?", I went to my room to study but then I fell apart, I couldn't stop crying, I had a hard time breathing.
I then found the sharpest knife in the kitchen and went to the bathroom to try and cut open my vein on my neck for a painless death, the knife fell from my hand as I looked into the mirror and I fell apart, then I collected myself and went into my aunt's room to ask for a break, she didn't understand but the moment she realised what I meant I almost fell apart again and ran into my room, I ran past my mom who came home from a long day at work and I couldn't look at her but I could tell, she was scared, furious and extremely sad.
I cried so much that I genuinely couldn't breath for a few seconds, my mom tried to comfort me but she left the room and screamed at my aunt who then apologised to her for pushing me to this state.
After that day everytime I tried to bring up that situation (minus the suicide attempt, no one knows that), she would scold me for bringing it up, saying things like "You keep bringing it up again and again, try to complain about something else for once", I only ever brought it up 3 times, once at the hospital after I fainted mid class and fell on the floor and the other times before the next big exams.
Everytime I would cry after she scolded me, she'd say "Stop crying, you're overreacting","You'll never survive in the real world" and "Stop crying, you're making me feel like the villian", even though I was bare a teenager and it stayed till I was 14
She's a good person, she had been saving up her money to buy me a PS4, this will come up later
Since 2017, my mom and dad had bee arguing and fighting, ALOT, this led to my dad's poor mental stability and health to turn to being abusive, and instead of people trying to stop him, they shunned him out, which just added to his poor mental health, however, no matter how bad his health got, he ALWAYS avoided showing it Infront of me, I was scared of my dad, not because he was unstable, because I was scared of being too emotional and and turning out like him
When he died in August of 2019, his birth month, my aunt took me out and bought me the PS4 the same day, the following month all I would do is play videogames and miss a few classes and tests, that's because I was depressed and lost my dad, my aunt didn't realise that (even though her dad also died when she was 13).
She blamed my PS4 for my worsening grades and missed classes, even when I told her why I missed classes, she didn't really care and probably thought I was making excuses, everytime I tried to open up to her it was used as fuel for the next time she scolds me.
By the time I was 14, I realised that if I didn't cry... I wouldn't get yelled at for crying (genius), so I tried it the next time she yelled at me, it just stopped there, it didn't extend to an extra 15 minutes of yelling, I haven't properly cried ever since and my eyes hurt when I even slightly cry now.
I can't even tell my mom because she's a very overprotective mother who would verbally beat my aunt to a bloody pulp, and everytime I did try and tell her my aunt would just scodl me again
By the end of 2020, I found healthier coping mechanisms, things like using humor, drawing, just getting lost in thought, finding catharsis in characters like Guts, Peter Parker, Clark Kent, Barry Allen, Luffy, Thorfinn and so much more
The only living being to know how I really feel... Is my cat, she sees me cry and comes up to me and lays on my lap while meowing loudly, but he's getting old and I'm scared of losing her, no I'm terrified.
My aunt is still just as bad but I am trying to be stronger now, since my IGCSE exams are here I have to be stronger, I forced myself to try and grow up when I was 14 and my friends even realised that I never really changed after 2020.
My aunt is an amazing human being, she raised me like a 3rd mother, the 2nd being my grandmother, I love my aunt, she just has very low empathy, and that's not her fault.
I promised myself to not be like her and be the kindest, and the most gentle human being I can ever possibly become and I'm well on my on that yellow brick road.
If anyone actually stuck around and read the whole thing, thank you so so much and it genuinely means so much to me, and if for some reason this gets out on YouTube or tiktok by the AI voice accounts, that's just plain hilarious lmao, but also thank you

2023.05.29 19:15 witchlapis I think Shiv's concerns were completely sincere
I don't know why I don't see more people celebrating this, because it's something I thought people wanted from Shiv for a long time - for her to make a decision in line with her values, not her ambition.
And I think that's exactly what happened.
Tom and Matson both fucked Shiv over far more than Kendall ever did, but she still chose to give it to them. And for people saying that Tom being her husband gives her some power - well Ken is her brother, and he promised her the exact same kind of "I'll take care of you" deal. She was never going to be happier with her husband in charge than her brother. Because it's not her in power, even if they treat her nicely or give her an informal position of influence. It's the same shit, and she arguably has more reason to hate Tom and Matson at this point.
But none of her personal ambitions were the focus of that scene. Because when Shiv knows she can't win, she does actually care about other things, too. The REAL focus was her seeing who Kendall was becoming, and being horrified by what she saw. Seeing him bark about how he deserved it because he's the eldest boy. Seeing him abuse Roman. Seeing him desperately plead like it's his life purpose.
That's what made her walk out. Not strategy. For once, she actually did something based on her feelings and values, not ambition. Doing, not the "right" thing, but the better thing.
I think she made her decision because she saw exactly what everyone else saw. She saw how badly Kendall wanted to be Logan. She saw how unstable and dangerous he could be. And she decided, as a judge of character, that as much as she may hate Tom, Kendall just shouldn't be CEO. I think it's honestly that simple. She's still kept in a cage, it's just Tom's rather than Kendall's.
I'm not saying Shiv "won" morally, because she's only ever going to choose her heart when she can't win. And I'm not saying Shiv won in actuality, because nobody did. I don't even think Tom did, considering how there's already whispering about killing him in the cradle. The game always goes on. It's the systems and the interests of the wealthy and powerful that win, and you're only on top as long as your interests align with theirs. So nobody wins.
All I'm saying is, I think Shiv for once made a real choice that wasn't fueled by herself winning or not. And I think she's maybe arrived at a similar conclusion to Roman, that all of this just isn't worth losing themselves over. Whereas Kendall has already lost himself to it.

2023.05.29 00:20 vandalimism Guide to Synthetic Fude (Cruelty-Free, Vegan Makeup Brushes)
| Guide to Synthetic Fude by vandalimism All links are non-affiliated and are included for citing references. I created this guide because I couldn’t find a comprehensive overview of synthetic fude (which refers to, in this context, artisanal makeup brushes)—a proper niche within a niche. Thus, I have compiled a list of makeup brush lines that are from OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers make products for other brands) and are 100% synthetic. The consensus is that synthetics are for liquids/creams, while animal hairs are for powders. Brush lines with natural and synthetic fibers typically reserve a pure or blended mix of synthetic fibers for lip, eyeliner, eyebrow, and liquid/cream face brushes. Consequently, drugstore synthetic brushes may be satisfactory for these use cases. However, the smoothness and stiffness of synthetic fibers result in poor performance with powder cosmetics and scratchiness on a sensitive face respectively. By exploring a selection of fude that use the latest synthetic fiber technology, I intend to guide readers seeking a better experience from their current synthetic brushes. In addition, I hope to see more fude enthusiasts create posts or videos dedicated to reviewing their synthetic fude collection since there’s a lack of such content on the internet. Information from My Blush Betty, Jackson's Art, Kingyin, etc. is used as preliminary research on synthetic makeup brushes' history and current landscape. The lack of cuticles in synthetic fibers means that they don't retain as much powder but also bacteria as animal hair; the resiliency of synthetic fibers also means that they can withstand frequent washings, leading to a more hygienic makeup routine. The primary goals in development are better powder absorption by texturizing and crimping synthetic fiber and to be more eco-friendly by relying less on fossil fuels. The unstable supply of fur and customer ethical concerns has dramatically increased the demand for synthetic alternatives to natural hair. In addition, the availability sections were written from an American perspective, which might have excluded some international options. Review of Uyeda Bisyodo Shiori Eye Brushes (CDJapan) It took 11 business days for me to receive my brushes (purchased with my own money) from CDJapan. The website was easy to navigate, but there was no option to filter for all makeup brushes in a synthetic material. I used an approximately $3 off coupon, and the threshold for free shipping was around $90. Fude Beauty and Fude Japan also carried the Uyeda Bisyodo Shiori series; however, their minimums for free shipping were too high i.e. at least $300 for my budget. Beautylish did not have the brand in its inventory. I also attempted to make an account for CDJapan but never received an email verification in my inbox or spam folder. So, I had to use the guest checkout and forwent points that I could have used in a future purchase for a discount. I still received shipping and invoice emails, so I knew I didn't mistype my email address. If I felt strongly about the points, I would've contacted their customer service but honestly didn't mind. The brushes also came with CDJapan's 1-year warranty on makeup brushes, which signaled confidence in quality. Description of UB Shiori Brushes Name | Shape | General Use | S-504 | Large Angled | Contour eye and nose | S-505 | Pencil | Precisely apply eyeshadow on the inner corner, uppelower lashlines, etc. | S-507 (the bigger version of S-508) | Large Shader | Quickly apply a wash of eyeshadow all over the eyelid | S-508 (the smaller version of S-507) | Small Shader | Apply eyeshadow below the eyelid crease, deepen the outer thirds, etc. | S-509 | Smudge | Apply eyeshadow as diffused eyeliner from the inner corner to the wing | Visual Comparison of UB Shiori Brushes to Similar Brushes Comparison of UB Shiori Brushes to RT Brushes UB's Characteristic | Result | Comments | More precisely bundled | More precise application of eyeshadow, which is helpful near the lashlines | The quality control from being hand-made by skilled artisans sets synthetic fude apart from drugstore options and is the primary reason for the cost. There are fewer stray hairs to accidentally poke the eye. | Denser | Absorb more powder, which means fewer re-applications of pigment to get desired opacities | People with difficulty getting colors to show on their skin tone may find that denser brushes can apply eyeshadow in a much more reasonable time. | More flexible fibers | Less "pokey" experience i.e. less pushback when using more pressure, which means less irritation for sensitive skin | The use of flexible fibers is apparent in shorter bristles. For example, I find the longer-haired RT 402 to be soft but any of the RT eye brushes to be pokey. I need to be mindful of holding RT eye brushes at certain angles and pressure to use them on my eyelids. To offset the stiffness of synthetic fibers, drugstore brushes are sometimes bundled in a tapered shape e.g. RT 402 so that as many of the finer-tipped ends can contact the face; but this can also limit the brush shapes that give a soft experience. | Brass ferrule | Brass is less prone to rust than aluminum, which may result in longer brush life | My decade-old aluminum-ferruled RT brushes haven't developed rust anyway. Brass feels more hefty and luxurious than aluminum. | After testing on my eyelids and fingertips, these are the softest brushes that I've ever used. Even with pressure, UB brushes don't feel as rough and exfoliating as RT brushes i.e. there is less audible "bristle" noise during use. Despite being denser than the RT brushes, UB brushes still feel softer due to having more flexible bristles. In comparison to my natural-haired BB Eyeshadow brush, UB brushes feel slightly slicker (but still much less slick than RT brushes). BB's and UB's fiber densities and flex feel similar. My assessment of these brushes may be hindered by my relatively small collection of brushes. As a result, I can only compare expensive synthetic fude to mostly drugstore synthetic brushes. In addition, my RT and BB brushes are more than a decade old, and I have used my UB brushes for only two months (at the time of writing). I don't intend to purchase natural hair brushes, so I won't be able to compare natural hair to synthetic fude in the future. I will also update the guide as I collect more synthetic fude and if readers suggest any corrections or give additional information. Feel free to discuss your experiences, good or bad, with synthetic fude in the replies! submitted by vandalimism to Fude [link] [comments] |

Wow!
Another fantastic read! Aaaahhh! I’m loving this story! The drama! The scheming! The politics! The absolute TERROR you face at the beginning of every chapter because anything could happen and if there is one thing I’ve learned so far, good things very rarely happen in this world! And even on the rare occasion something good does happen and you feel safe and happy, BANG! Something worse happens! My stress levels increase tenfold and my short-lived happiness becomes a distant memory! Which is a very new sensation for me. Because, call me crazy, but up until now, I’ve enjoyed stories were nice things could actually happen! Do you remember that concept? Nice things happening? Yeah, the memory is growing faint for me too….
Anyway, my blood pressure is hitting all time records but other than that, I can’t wait to continue this series! I’m sure I’ll be fine...…HAHAHAHAHA……
Now, let’s get into this! The prologue!
We finally meet Stannis Baratheon and wow! George really went out of his way to make him appear as unpleasant and dry as humanly possible! But I think I’ll leave my evaluation of him until I get to Davos. Instead, much like the prologue itself, I think I’ll focus my attentions on Cressen and the pussy-shadow maker herself, Melisandre.
I’m intrigued and terrified of her in equal measures. I think she has to be one of the most dangerously mysterious characters in this book because both her actions and motivations remain largely unknown to the reader, of course, you could say the same for Varys and Littlefinger, but, idk about you, but I find an all powerful zealot much more menacing!
Being a religious fanatic, I knew she wasn’t going to bring anything remotely positive to the picture, so I completely sympathised with Cressen and believed, (and continue to believe) he was justified in his concerns but this is ASOIAF, I knew things weren’t going to run smoothly but it’s incredibly unfortunate the poor man had to lose his life to try to protect the man he raised.
I remember being so disgusted with Stannis in his treatment of Cressen, this man raised you and loved you when apparently nobody else did, and you couldn’t even treat him with common decency! Ooooohhhh boy was I annoyed. Especially because I was so looking forward to finally meeting Roberts formidable brother, thinking this is the Baratheon I could root for and then had such a negative introduction to him! My opinion of him has certainly improved, but my initial impression was decidedly negative. Props again to George! He has a gift for understanding and portraying how subjective a characters perception can be, leaving the reader, to a certain extent, take the information we are given with a pinch of salt.
We also get a glimpse of Dragonstone! I must say, I wasn’t expecting it to be quite so, grim. Of course, the occupants are definitely a factor, looking at you Selyse, but the castle and island itself, it does not sound pleasant. It got me thinking about what Daenerys would think of it? I don’t really see this blending well with the beautiful, flowery aesthetic she is dreaming of. But then again, it’s built on a volcano, being the blood of the dragon and her fondness for heat, this could be the Valyrian equivalent of a cosy little cottage for her, who knows?
Also, that jester, Patchface creeps me the hell out! Why would you allow this crazy person near your child, Stannis??? Didn’t Cressen say he was the sole survivor of the wreck? So they really have no idea who this crazy person was? Yeah, that’s comforting…..
Now, lets get to the characters! Like before, I think I’ll just go in no particular order:
CATELYN: Remember when I said I had high hopes for this motheson team? Yeah, now I am extremely worried about this motheson team! I’m optimistic they will triumph in the long term but, presently, I’m certain more hurdles are going to be thrust in their direction! But, at the same time, what else could possibly go wrong for them at this point? Granted, Robb has won every battle, but everything outside of the battlefield has gone completely pear shaped! It’s extremely unfortunate that they’re doing everything right but that circumstance is getting in the way of their success!
It frustrated me in AGOT and continues to frustrate me in this book, that the Lannisters seem to have an unlimited supply of luck! Seriously! How tf are they succeeding??? Aaaahhhhh! Don’t get me wrong, I love Tyrion, and I continue to root for him, but the rest of this family needs to be taken out, immediately! Uuuuuggghhhh! I’m praying their rapid rise will soon come crashing down! We saw with Daenerys, George likes to strip his characters of everything before building them back up and I believe this is what he is doing with the Starks!
In the case of the Starks, however, it’s believing they’ve lost everything, in regards to Bran and Rickon, at least. But poor Catelyn! Discovering your children have been killed is horrendous enough, but believing their heads have been mounted on your castle walls? I just can’t even comprehend the levels of emotions she must be feeling!
I must say, I was not expecting the way Catelyns storyline played out in this book but I enjoyed it nonetheless! I thought she would become more of a leading figure in Robbs court but she seems to have taken a back seat and I’m very uncomfortable with that. I truly believe Robb will become a great ruler but age is not on his side. He needs the guidance and counsel only a parent can give their child, not that of a subject to their sovereign. There are things a ruler needs to be told that their followers wouldn’t be as forthcoming with as I believe Catelyn would be! Of course, I can understand, from Robbs perspective, asserting his leadership is challenge enough, given his young age, without his mother by his side, so I can understand his reluctance to have Catelyn close to him, but still, it frustrates me!
That reminds me, don’t ask me how, but I forgot to talk about Robb in my first post, it goes without saying, I love him and am rooting for him! But what I wanted to talk about was him being proclaimed King in the North! I’ll admit, it was a powerful, goosebump inducing scene but omg how tf did the Northerners and Rivermen/Riverlanders? think that was a good idea? Talk about adding fuel to the fire! But anyway, I just wanted to mention that before getting back to Catelyn.
I really admired her attempts at forming a truce between the Baratheon brothers, alas, to no avail, but still, good effort! I really don’t understand Renlys thought process though? Seriously, what sort of precedent are you setting here? Do you expect the realm to bleed after the death of every King? Each claimant fighting for their right to rule? He is/was, the embodiment of style over substance. Like Cressen mentions, it’s just a childs game to him and like a child, I don’t imagine him playing too long before growing bored and then Westeros would’ve been left with a Robert 2.0.!
I also have to talk about Brienne of Tarth! What a character! Of course she couldn’t be a badass knight, she had to be accused of murder and treason! She is a kind hearted character after all! Imagine nice things happening for her? If I didn’t laugh, I’d cry! Honestly! But at least her circumstances led her to Catelyn! I am fully on board for this partnership and I look forward to seeing where they go from here.
I should talk about where they left off. They didn’t kill Jaime. I know that because that’s what I would want them to do and since when do I get what I want in this series? But why ask for Briennes sword if not? Didn’t Brienne pick up Renlys sword when they fled the camp? Does this sword have some magical element from Renlys death or something? I’m definitely overthinking it. Most likely it was used to whack him with the handle or something haha.
TYRION: If AGOT was Neds book, ACOK certainly has to be Tyrions. What a journey we’ve had with Tyrion. Beginning as Hand of the King and ending as…..what is he now? Tywin has resumed his position as Hand, is Tyrion going to be shipped back to Casterly Rock? I can’t see that happening. Ooooohhhh, wait, maybe that’s how he could reunite with Catelyn? If he is left with nothing after everything he has done, perhaps this is the tipping point for him to finally abandon this screwed up family and join with the Starks? Perhaps turning the tide in the war? Yeah, now that I’ve written it out, it sounds too convenient for this series but I’m hoping some variation of the above isn’t beyond the realms of possibility?
I was extremely impressed with Tyrion in many ways in this book and extremely disappointed in him in others. Of course, on the politic side of events, he was in his element! Oh those chapters were a beauty to behold! Watching him outmanoeuvre Cersei and putting the little toad Joffrey (screw you) in his place! Beautiful! Puts a smile on my face even thinking about it.
Let’s start with Janos Slyntt, I think that’s how you spell it but I’m not taking the time to check because he deserves no such attention! Ha! Coy Tyrion. Very coy. Although I wish he had just gone on and killed him, rather than burdening the watch with him! But alas, I can’t have my cake and expect to eat it all, now can I? I’ll take the wins when I can!
Then the deception to lure Cerseis informant out in the open. I had no idea who it could’ve been but once it was revealed as Pycelle, I was not at all surprised! I’m guessing Tyrion already knew and used the ploy to confirm his suspicions, seeing as he went ahead with sending Myrcella to Dorne?
I really enjoyed Tyrion and Varys’…..I want to say friendship? But I think partnership would be more fitting, as I don’t think either would blink an eye at turning on each other. It truly was beautiful to read though, their interactions I mean. The dialogue! A constant duel of words, equally matched and equally prodding for weaknesses. Both walking on a continuous line of thin ice but boy did they glid through! Ah, I loved it!
I do agree with Cersei though, and I shudder at that, but Tyrion did rely heavily on Varys. In my first post I think I said Varys could be trustworthy, but now, I don’t think so. He was certainly helpful, but he is playing his own game and so far, I have no idea what that could be, but I feel like Varys is helpful because he wants to be but could very easily switch sides should he ever choose to do so. That said, he is certainly not as ruthless as he must outwardly appear. We’ve seen after all, his efforts to protect Ned, Roberts bastards, etc. So, despite public opinion, he's really quite a softy. Well, maybe not a softy, but has a certain level of humanity, which, imo, classifies as a softy in this world!
Tyrions relationship with Baelish was much more confusing for me. He knows Petyr was behind his arrest and seemingly does nothing? I understand, in uncertain times, maintaining the treasury is an essential service, but I expected more from Tyrion than, “haha, you thought you were getting Harrenhal, you’ll think twice about backstabbing me now!.” It’s even more frustrating that he actually acquired the castle regardless! Again, I must begrudgingly give props to Littlefinger for playing the game flawlessly, but man, is it annoying!
Tyrions relationship with Cersei, aside from the political intrigue, must have been one of the more intriguing aspects of his chapters. Clearly, they’re not close, at all, but there is a certain, idk, its not affection but perhaps there was a certain level of respect between them. I think I must have been as shocked as Tyrion when Cersei hugged him when they received the news of Stannis marching on Storms End. But I was just as shocked when Tyrion poisoned his sister. I legit thought he just killed Cersei for a second. Turns out it was just diarrhoea, lol.
I don’t understand why he antagonised her so much though? I don’t understand why it was necessary for him to kidnap Tommen, unless I missed something? I feel like that was just unnecessarily hostile. Then threaten her with Tommens safety, idk, I just don’t think it was necessary. I felt it would have been more beneficial for him to reassure Cersei rather than threaten her. I get that his authority was being challenged but I can’t help but think he shot himself in the foot with that. I really don’t see their relationship recovering from this. Obviously, they didn’t have much of a bond before, but I feel like, before, there was at least a small glimpse of comradery between them but with this, I think he cut all ties with her and that troubles me. Cersei doesn’t hold back when it comes to her enemies. Especially those who threaten her children!
Don’t get me wrong, I want Tyrion to abandon this family, so I know it sounds hypocritical of me to say he should be nice to his sister but that’s so long as they’re playing on the same team but I really am hoping Tyrion eventually abandons Team Lannister! I’m feeling less sure of this outcome than I did at the end of AGOT but I’m still optimistic it’s going to happen, ideally sooner rather than later!
I should also mention Shae. It’s clear she only wants his gold but for whatever reason, Tyrion has fallen in love with his own made up version of her and I don’t see this relationship ending well, for either of them…..
ARYA: There were three characters I was immensely nervous for, going into this book, Jon, Sansa and Arya. I KNEW Arya wasn’t going to reach the North but I was hoping she would at least reach Riverrun! I knew that was an optimistic belief but I wanted to dream!
On the flip side I was terrified she was going to be captured by the Lannisters. My fears came somewhat true as she was captured, fortunately the Lannisters captured Weasel rather than Arya Stark!
I swear, my heart was in my mouth going into each of her early chapters, as they were travelling up the Kingsroad, each chapter more unnerving than the last because nothing bad had happened but I KNEW that wasn’t going to last! RIP Yoren btw, you smelled sour but your heart was sweet!
Arya was really our eyes on the ground with the ongoing conflict in the Riverlands and boy was it gruesome! George really didn’t hold back with the brutality of war! Her chapters were an interesting study on the morality of the conflict. I understand that it’s the Lannisters sacking and pillaging the Riverlands, but Robb fought fire with fire and I don’t believe his actions caused any less destruction in the Westerlands. The commons suffer, regardless of how honourable the intent may be!
Despite the ordeals she went through, I’m somewhat relieved she got through it relatively unscathed. But can we please sign this girl up for some therapy sessions? Seriously! I’m really starting to worry for Aryas mental health. It is not healthy for a 9/10 year old to have a list of people they wish to kill and repeat it obsessively each night, just saying….
Also, What THE ACTUAL F is going on with Jaqen H’Aghar? What’s the significance of the coin? And wtf does “Valar Morghulis” mean? Soooo many questions! I’m conflicted. On one hand, I’m slightly disappointed Arya didn’t go off with whoever that was. Of course, I understand her wanting to return to her family but imagine returning as a badass magical face changing assassin? That would’ve been epic! But I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing Jaqen again!
Yet, on the other hand, I’m not sure that’s really what Arya needs right now, given her current thirst for vengeance. I think she’s approaching a slippery slope. Of course, I want Arya to become a badass knight, but her progressively cavalier attitude towards killing is certainly unsettling, to say the least!
Also, Arya. YOU HAD THREE LIVES IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND. THREE. WHHHHHYYYYYYY????? GEORGE. SERIOUSLY???? Granted, she’s 10 but come on Arya! Bigger picture and all! Tywin. The Mountain. Joffrey. You could have ended it all!!!!! O.M.G!!!!!
I want to scream at somebody.
Seriously.
Now that I’ve come to the end, I leave this book feeling no less anxious for her safety than I did at the end of AGOT! From the little we’ve seen of Lord Bolton, he doesn’t seem like the forgiving type and I dread to think what would happen should they get caught! So she enters the next book, on the run. Again. Arya, what are you doing to my blood pressure???
JON: I am shocked! Shocked, people! Shocked that the Watch hasn’t been completely annihilated by the dead people roaming about! Not that I don’t believe that is still a valid concern, but I’m honestly amazed they’ve gotten this far without so much as a glimpse of them! I don’t think we’ve seen them at all in this novel? That in itself came as a huge surprise!
But my god, that march sounded absolutely miserable! It would’ve been horrible putting up with the cold, but constant rain on top of that? Hell to the no! Grim. Just kill me now. I could never!
We are introduced to the charming Craster in this book. What a delight he is! Honestly, I gagged. He marries his daughters and they give him more daughters. What? Wtf is it with incest in this series? No more. Please. We have sufficient incest George. Enough!
I am baffled as to Mormonts cavalier attitude towards Craster “sacrificing” his sons, though. He’s offering them to the gods, aka the ice zombies? What do they do with the sons? Wouldn’t that be an important question to ask? Do they eat them or recruit them? Can dead babies grow? Hahaha, I’m sorry, I just got an image in my head of what Dolorous Edd would say about getting taken out by a dead baby. Ha! Sorry. I love that man with all my heart btw.
I have a feeling though that Crasters daughter, Gilly, managed to sneak away and followed the Nights Watch, I feel like we’ll be seeing her again, why single her out otherwise?
I’m curious what the significance of Ghosts little discovery will be. Dragonglass? Is this used against the dead? Oooooohhhhh. I’m so f**king stupid. Dragons. Daenerys is going to play a big role in the fight against the dead isn’t she? Well that’s embarrassing that it took me this long to realise that. Lets draw a veil over that embarrassingly late epiphany, shall we?
Anyway, dragonglass, aka obsidian, a real world property, I understand the usefulness of fire breathing dragons but I’m not sure what makes dragonglass more powerful than normal steel? Unless this obsidian was formed by dragon fire? Perhaps. I shall wait and see!
So Jon has now become a double agent. Interesting indeed. I’m nervous for him. It’ll be interesting to see how he can convince Mance and the rest of the wildlings of his loyalty. I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume, as a son of Eddard Stark, forsaking his sworn word to the Nights Watch isn’t going to be an easy task for him…..
I honestly have no idea how he is going to come back from this, especially with nobody left to corroborate his story. Not to mention he was the one to kill the Halfhand. I feel like Mormont will believe him, but with this series? I can’t be too sure! I guess I’ll just have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Again. I’m leaving Jon in another stressful position!
SANSA: How tf has nobody slaughtered Joffrey yet? Seriously. This is book two and he is still King? What the actual F**K??? SCREW YOU TO THE EXTREME, YOU LITTLE TOAD! FFS, I just want him to die slowly, screaming in agony. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for?! Oh, it was a beauty to behold when the little toad cut himself on the Iron Throne, crying for his mommy in front of the entire court, HA! Loved it. Peak literature, George! Thank you!
Unsurprisingly, Sansas position remains just as, if not more, precarious, as it did at the end of AGOT, now that her betrothal has been annulled.
I’m honestly surprised the marriage didn’t go ahead tbh. Going in to this book, I was certain I was going to watch Sansa being forced to marry this little c**t and I’m a little disappointed this didn’t happen. OK. OK. Let me explain. Obviously it would’ve put Sansa in a horrific position as Joffreys wife but she would have been Queen and a decent one at that, I’d bet! Playing her cards right, she could have amassed a certain level of influence.
I know that was a highly ambitious dream, as I doubt Cersei or Tyrion would have allowed her the opportunity and it certainly didn’t take into account the level of abuse she would have been forced to endure with Joffrey, but I wanted to dream.
So now she is no longer destined to be Queen, I’m really anxious for her future in Kings Landing, and I’m really hoping Dontos will finally get his act together and GET HER TF OUT OF THIS GODFORSAKEN CITY!
Also, can I just take a moment here to vent?
Dontos? Seriously? All the knights in the city and we’re given Dontos? Don’t get me wrong, I admire him for wanting to help Sansa but come on, Dontos??? His intent may be honourable but his capabilities are….lacking. He’s more likely to get her killed than rescued and as someone who wants to see Sansa safe, this stresses me tf out!
I have to say, I was very impressed with Sansa in this book. Saving Dontos being a prime example. Deftly done, I must say. This is what I’m saying when I think she would’ve been a good Queen, soothing the brutality of the King where she could.
I don’t think I mentioned it when discussing Tyrion, but the Blackwater battle was so well written! That entire sequence of chapters were my all time favourites of the series thus far! The back and forth between the battle outside and those seeking refuge within the castle walls, it made for gripping reading! I loved it! Which is quite surprising, as I’m usually not a fan of reading battle sequences, idk, my eyes just start glazing over when I’m reading pages of “my sword hit hard, I stumbled back, I raise another arm, I get hit in the back of the head, I lunge at my opponent, etc”, idk, it just never appealed to me before and I’d usually skip through all that to reach the outcome, but I was hooked!
I’m conflicted on how I feel about the Hound leaving without Sansa. Because I know for a fact her situation isn’t going to remotely improve until she gets the hell away from the Lannisters and the sooner, the better! But I don’t trust the Hound around her. I also think he would be too conspicuous for her to make a successful escape. I have no doubt he would die to protect her, but there is only so many opponents one man could take on before ultimately falling and then Sansa would be left to face untold misery.
That being said, I’m deeply troubled that with the Hound gone, Sansa has lost a valuable, if not somewhat unstable, ally. Aaaahhhhhh! Again, my blood pressure cannot handle this stress!
Theon: Serves me right for trying to give someone the benefit of the doubt! I think I described Theon as “a dick but somewhat good intentioned”. Yeah. He’s just a dick. What an utter idiot.
I can’t even be angry with him, now, that is. I was furious with him when he captured Winterfell, but in the end, I only felt pity for him. It’s never a nice thing, to realise what you are is so far removed from what you thought you could be, but add that on top of your imminent demise, it left Theons final days full of shame and melancholy.
I do feel a certain level of empathy for him. It couldn’t have been easy, growing up not really belonging and to return to what he considered his home, only to find it just as alien and void of any affection. I can certainly see the conflict of loyalty he felt between his foster family and his true family but omfg he made the absolute worst decision ever!
The Starks raised him, taught him everything he knows, he even pledged himself to Robb but of course, his inferior complex took over, blinding him and look where it got him!
I honestly don’t understand what his plan was though? In what world did he imagine he could hold Winterfell, regardless of how many men his sister left him? Did he honestly think Robb would just bend over and allow the Ironborn to keep the North? Aaaaaahhhhh!!!! The stupidity! I just can’t fathom it! I honestly can’t!
Can I just take this opportunity to shit talk the Ironborn? Because how tf have Westeros put up with these people for so long? Do they have any redeeming qualities? As far as I can tell, they’re Westeros’ equivalent of the Dothraki. Lawless pirates who have, for some reason or other, been allowed to rape, raid and pillage to their hearts content. Yuck.
I will say though, putting the whole, allowing her brother to feel her up part aside, I quite enjoyed Asha, and not only because she knew exactly how to push Theons buttons, ha! She’s everything Theon believed himself to be, and more! If she wasn’t so loyal to her father and undermining the Starks, I think I could like her!
Something I’m confused by however, Roose Boltons bastard is Ramsey Snow, but who was Reek and why did they think Ramsey was him to begin with? I’ll have to go back and reread because I either missed or forgot the explanation, but nevertheless, I hate him. He sounds disgusting, and I don’t mean the smell. It broke my heart to find out Lady Hornwood died such a tragic death, she seemed so sweet! Omg there is so much added misery in this series, we have enough sorrow going on with the main characters George, I don’t need to cry over the minors too!
Ramsey appears to be insane but tactful and that my friends is what I call a terrifying combination! I’m honestly unsure of what his goal is? Everyone believes him to be dead, why return to Winterfell once Theon freed him and kill the besieging army, only to then betray Theon in turn? Why tf does every single character have a scheme up their sleeves? Enough!
BRAN: I’m conflicted. I’m happy to see Bran finally getting the chance to head out into the wild in search for answers but it stinks that Winterfell had to be wiped out in order for this to be achievable. I honestly can’t see a scenario where Maester Luwin, Ser Rodrick etc would have allowed Bran the opportunity had Winterfell remained strong.
So, while I detest the actions of Theon and Ramsey as it significantly damaged Robbs position and led to untold misery for the castles inhabitants, it appears as though they actually inadvertently aided Brans progression in “How to Warg 101”. That’s if they actually succeed in their mission though! I’m still confused as to what exactly they will find or how they will manage to find it but I’m certain this will be significant, not just for Bran but for the Starks in general.
We finally find out the significance of Brans wolf “dreams”! Bran is actually a warg! But apparently Jon is too? And there are suggestions so is Robb? Perhaps even Rickon? Interesting. Very interesting. And very cool too! Damn, imagine how awesome it would be to be able to possess the body of a wolf!
It's deeply upsetting to me though that Sansa and Arya apparently are left out of this beyond incredible magical family trait! I’m assuming it’s because they have lost their wolfs? Another thing I can thank the f**king Lannisters for! Aaaahhhhh!
I’m curious though, Aryas direwolf is still alive and apparently leading an army of common wolfs in the Riverlands? Which is utterly badass in and of itself but if they’re reunited, does this mean Arya could potentially control an army of wolves? Or has their connection been broken? Oh, I hope not! I refuse to believe Nymeria is out there amassing a large force of wolfs only for it to lead nowhere! Oooohhhh, wait, will they be reunited now that Arya has fled Harrenhal? Oh that would be incredible! Imagine her rocking up to Riverrun with an army of wolves at her back!
On a sad note, does that leave Sansa as the only Stark sibling without magical abilities? Boo! I hate that!
I must say, after all they’ve been through, I feel for Rickon the most. Poor baby! He just wants his family back and I have no idea how he is going to process the loss of his last remaining family member. He wasn’t handling the situation too well to begin with, but now? That child is gonna need a hell of a lot of therapy and can we please sign Shaggydog up for some anger management classes too? That wolf troubles me!
I’m very intrigued to learn more about the Reeds! As crannogmen, they appear to be somewhat disconnected from the rest of the North, with their own unique traits and customs. Seemingly more in touch with the environment around them, there are claims they are descended from the children of the forest. I have a feeling they will prove invaluable on the expedition North!
I should probably be concerned that they’re essentially a small group of children on a journey through a divided and hostile land but I’m feeling naively optimistic of their chances. I know that this has backfired on me in the past but I can’t give up hope! I refuse!
DAENERYS (DAY-EN-AIR-E-US?): I must say, the pace of Daenerys’ chapters took quite a slow turn in this book, didn’t they? Perhaps there were times I felt the story moved a little too slow for my liking but I knew going into this book, things weren’t going to fall onto her lap overnight
Although her dragons hatched, when we left Daenerys in AGOT, she was pretty much sitting at rock bottom, her husband and child dead, the vast majority of her people gone, along with all of Drogos wealth I imagine too! I knew it would take time for her to get back on her feet and that was essentially what her ACOK journey was.
We start off the book with the red comet and, although every character appears to take it as a sign of their coming, I feel like Daenerys was the obvious recipient. Heralding in the new era of dragons! They sounded adorable btw! “Who’s going to grow up to be big weapons of mass destruction? You are! Yes you are! Yes you are!!!” Cute but they’re gonna do some damage! I can’t wait to see Joffreys face when he gets burned to a crisp! Hehe, I can’t wait!
I’m surprised by the names she chose for them though. Drogon makes sense, he was her moon and stars after all, but I’m surprised she named the other two after her brothers, both of which don’t really have the greatest of reputations?
Sent by the comet, Daenerys spent most of her time in Qarth seeking out its leaders to fund her conquest of Westeros, frustratingly, to no avail. Even more frustratingly is that she had to sell all of her newly acquired wealth to fund her ultimately worthless bribes.
The only thing of note was her trip to the House of the Undying and it instantly humbled me of any belief that I was in any way wise because there is no way in hell I would’ve made it out of that maze alive!
I’m assuming these were hallucinations brought on by whatever it was she drank but obviously with some element of magic?
There were a lot of visions but the two that stood out to me were:
The wolf head with the Iron crown is obviously Robb. The feast with corpses, I’m guessing this is depicting the savagery of the war? Perhaps it signifies the walking dead? From my earlier embarrassingly late realisation, I’m guessing this references the need for Daenerys’ help against the dead?
Secondly, what Daenerys made out to be her brother Rhaegar with his wife and newborn son, “his is the song of ice and fire”, “there must be one more……the dragon has three heads”, Daenerys has three dragons, I’m assuming Rhaegar believed his son to be “the Prince that was promised”, but I’m guessing instead it’s Daenerys? My brain hurts trying to process this! In reality, I have absolutely no idea what the hell was going on but those are the only takes I could come up with! Like Daenerys, this sequence has left me with far more questions than answers!
My blood pressure is not having a good time with all of this, which is not helped with the knowledge that Daenerys has made a powerful enemy with regards to the warlocks! Especially now that their powers are getting stronger! That’s just perfect!
I’m glad to see her leaving Qarth, the further away the better, I say! But I’m honestly surprised Illyrio found her so quickly! Hopefully once she reaches Pentos she can gather forces and enhance her position while waiting for her dragons to grow bigger and stronger! Thinking about it, I’m pretty sure Daenerys is the only character leaving this book on a high lol!
DAVOS We have new players entering the game ladies and gents! I really liked Davos and I’m hoping we haven’t seen the last of him? I don’t think we have but I’m not sure how the man could possibly survive!
I really felt for him! To watch the man you serve fall into the arms (figuratively or perhaps literally) of a religious fanatic! I mean, come on George, zealots are bad enough without giving them magical powers!
Davos himself is an interesting character. He appears to be a decent, kind hearted man which took me a while to get used to as we’ve met so few of them in this series so far! Turning from a smuggler to a knight and right hand man to Stannis Baratheon, he is in quite a unique position within Westeros, as well as Stannis’ Court. I can’t imagine many commoners are given such a meteoric rise in fortunes! Stannis himself sees his true worth but he must endure the snobbery of his Lords bannermen, God forbid they had to listen to wisdom from a commoner! Gasp! The horror!
We got a glimpse of his backstory, apparently he smuggled onions into Storms End during Roberts Rebellion, making all the difference to the besieged, but it’s unclear as to how he was put in that position to begin with? I imagine he had some sort of relationship with Stannis beforehand in order for him to take such a risk? Especially when he allowed Stannis to mutilate him in return for his service? I get he was granted a keep and lands and everything, but my god, no wonder nobody ran to fight for Stannis!
Let’s actually talk about Stannis. I’m not sure how I feel about him. There are instances, mainly his interactions with Davos and his relationship with Devan, that I really like him and I can certainly see why a man like Davos supports him, but then there are aspects of his personality that I find grating. The grinding teeth habit aside, I just can’t get past the sulkiness. I swear, he remembers every single slight given it him since he was born and refuses to forgot or forgive! Perhaps I could overlook this aspect of his personality, had he not aligned himself with such a fanatic. I mean, from as far as I can tell, he has more or less sold his soul to the devil.
I can’t help but make the comparison here to Macbeth. They share many similarities and I can very well see them sharing the same fate because there is no way in hell Stannis is this "Azor Ahai”! I mean, it was a cool little trick and sounds like an amazing sword but that whole spectacle of retrieving it from the flames was an absolute farce!
Besides, Stannis has already been defeated. Alive, but backed into a corner! I don’t see him giving up, though! That man will fight until the bitter end! I admire him for that but allowing himself to so overtly ingratiate himself with this religious cult, I can’t say I’ll be sad to see him lose, which I believe, ultimately, he will, but with Melisandre by his side, I can see him causing a lot of damage before he falls. So long as that damage is contained solely towards the Lannisters though, I’ll be satisfied.
I will say, his assault on Kings Landing made for an unsettling array of emotions. Who tf was I supposed to root for??? Its no secret that I want Joffrey and Cersei to die, ideally painfully, but I was rooting for Tyrion to succeed!
At the same time, I really like Davos and I wouldn’t have an issue with Stannis as ruler but for Melisandre! In the end I gave up on choosing a side and just prayed my favourite characters survived!
I’m curious to see, should he survive, where Davos’ story goes from here. I have a feeling he has become a Lannister prisoner!
As for Stannis? “Double, double, toil and trouble.”

2023.05.28 21:17 TheShadow420Blazeit AN EXCERPT FROM WOJAK MCLEOD; WOJAK'S LUCID DREAM
Authors note: This is fiction inspired by my real personal life events. The following takes place during the prologue, Wojak has a lucid dream. It's hella messed up hahaha
INSIDE WOJAK’S HEAD, A LUCID DREAM “Daddy, tell us a story!” she said, and Gina nodded her head in sympathetic valence to Vikki’s high-pitched request for a tale; her lips red from the wine and en bon point from her own Romanian-genetics. Gina -lithe and blonde- danced around eager for his words to lay upon her soul. She loved his words.
He laughed and agreed to tell an honest to God absolutely true tale or two for his girls.
Their dinner was strewn about and bottles of wine were overturned in the sink and the Stargazer Lilies had dropped red stamen and white & pink petals on his grey concrete slab of countertop. The curry powder paint on the walls seemed to breathe as Wojak took another sip of wine. The music played over the integrated speakers and
Moby sang of the Natural Blues “Ok, fuck these dishes, let’s go to bed,” he said as they waited for his decision, and once they had it they screamed and giggled and ran about like feral cats. He shook his head and tried to cobble together each move in life that had brought him to this spot; but it was too variegated, and he had been going too fast to take notes , he thought. This is just where he was, and now he ought to, he thought, tell his girls a bedtime story for Christ-fucking-sake.
They waited in silence now, as daddy was in charge, they thought, and anything said now would only ruin what was to come. He followed them into the bedroom.
“Ladies, did I ever tell you about the story of the Little Jackass Bunny?” he asked, and they grinned, and he now saw that they had glitter -and a little bit of arousal in their faces. They loved the way he talked about work , it was like warto him; and they saw his war-stories as grand; saw it all as love, and poetry and ancient masculinity on display. Wojak was a chad who was now providing Orange Kush Mints Weed of the highest quality
They passed the pipe and held their knees; they blew smoke into the air above them. The sheets were stained with amorous effluvium from weeks of him wearing our their most soft parts; and they tried to make space for him in the middle of the bed by moving pillows and blankets.
“Jesus,” he said as he spied the sex-stained sheets, “you can make out the face of Donald Trump on these things. How much fucking do we do; exactly?”
“A lot,” Gina said. “Tell us about the Jackass Bunny!”
“Ah yes… Isaiah Lobsterbusch… AKA the Little Jackass Bunny!” Wojak laughed in contempt for mentioning the name of the Jackass Bunny and out of amusement for the story he was about to tell Vikki and Gina. “I met this stupid fucker four days after a Deftones concert I went to while I was still in college, and he noticed me wearing a Deftones t-shirt I bought from a stand at the tour!”
“Fuckin’ Deftones baby…” Vikki said, biting her lip in a soft, seductive, horny manner as she gently scratched Wojak’s chest with her nails. “Wait, why is he the Jackass Bunny?”
“You’ve seen Disney’s Alice In Wonderland?” Wojak asked as Vikki and Gina both nodded. “Isaiah strongly resembles that one character who sits at the table with the Mad Hatter… the March Hare! His face and this look he had in his eyes!”
“And his personality was that of a jack-ass too?” Vikki asked as Gina giggled.
“Indeed… well anyways, we got along initially because of Deftones as well as other bands such as Metallica and Soundgarden... When I was twenty-three, that was when I moved into a house with ten other people…” said Wojak. “Isaiah was actually one of those ten roommates. And believe me… he was fine at first, but he began going down a bizarre downward spiral where he was paranoid and accusing everyone of being passive aggressive to him… when it was the other way around!”
“Like… he was legit unstable?” asked Gina.
“He was such a cuck! GOD, he was always such an insufferable person who always found reasons to complain! “Oh my God, a spider is in my shoe!? Someone put it there! Why is there a sock on my jacket!? Personal attack!!!” Wojak laughed. “But man… he was always complaining about people from the skate park always coming up and vandalizing his car, just non-stop bitching!”
“Oh… so he’s paranoid…” said Vikki. “How did he get kicked out?”
“The final straw was when after the first roommate was kicked out, a person named Joe Ludwigson. Joe got replaced by Terry. Terry was a recovering meth addict trying to get his shit together, and everyone was trying to help Terry, but Isaiah was just harassing him and accusing him of stealing and doing meth in the house.” said Wojak. “After I kept sticking up for Terry, as did my other roommates… Isaiah decided to retaliate against me by stealing my weed, which was not ok…”
“Bastard!” Gina exclaimed in sympathy. “So did you beat him up?!”
“I yelled at him, and Isaiah did nothing but give excuses!” Wojak laughed. “Because you’re a little punk! Because you’re a child!”
“You’re more of a man than this little fuckboy hun…” Vikki whispered into Wojak’s ear loud enough for Gina to hear and elicit a warm smile out of her. “Continue…”
“I even said that it was my weed and stealing was not ok, if the little bastard had asked beforehand, I would have been ok. And he just kept downplaying everything; “Wojak, it was less than a gram, you make yourself sound like such a kingpin!” said Wojak. “And then Terry called him out on all his bullshit which resulted in Isaiah literally spitting on him!”
“Eww! Spitting!? GROSS!” Vikki said with shock.
“Did he get arrested!?” asked Gina.
“Yes, but not right away; here’s the good part; I yelled at him and told him he needed to get the fuck out, and he began saying he didn’t need us because we were all gay and that we could go fuck each other!” said Wojak. “His constant homophobia was also getting old, and always revolved around seventh grade insults, so I told him to shut up. After he yelled “what did you just say!?” Terry called him a festering cum-bubble on a dead f-----’s ass!”
Vikki and Gina both guffawed as Wojak gleefully smiled at this.
“And it was then that he pulled a knife on Terry, so I punched Isaiah in the sternum. Then Terry threw Isaiah out the window!” Wojak laughed. “This is the part where Isaiah’s got arrested; he drove over to his brother's house asking for help, but his father who he always complained about attempted to intervene.”
“Oh?” asked Gina.
“Yeah, Isaiah became paranoid and he accused his father of pulling the strings behind everything! He actually accused his own father of reaching out to David and Elliott to find Terry so Terry could be a spy for him!” laughed Wojak. “And fuckin’ Isaiah assaulted his dad as he screamed the lyrics to Master of Puppets by Metallica and the cops came!”
“That’s one hell of a story, daddy…” Gina seductively whispered into Wojak’s ear as Vikki began digging her nails into Wojak’s chest, eliciting a horny growl from Wojak that sounded much like a male grizzly bear having settled to take a nap near the river bank.
Given that this is the life of Wojak McLeod, a Doomer, none of this would be real. Just a lucid dream. As Wojak was prepared to have a threesome with two fictitious women inside his own head, the sound of his Alexa went off. Wojak McLeod was awake… And what was once orgasmic bliss slowly transmuted into a chthonic anger that was daily fuel for him. Another day in the sad reality that is clown world was waiting for Wojak…

2023.05.28 19:12 CedarRain Operation: Phantom Dawn
The moment my boots sank into the soft sand of the unnamed island, a chill ran down my spine. As a seasoned Marine, I've been trained to trust my instincts, but this was different. There was an eerie stillness that hung over the island like a shroud, a sense of foreboding that was hard to shake off.
We were a squad of seven, sent on a reconnaissance mission, assigned the task of scouting the island for any signs of enemy activity. Satellite imagery had shown suspicious structures in the dense vegetation, and it was our job to check it out. But as we made our way towards the interior, the unease grew.
On our first night, Corporal Jameson vanished. He was on watch duty and when it was time to switch, he was gone. No signs of struggle, no footprints leading into the jungle. Just his rifle lying in the sand. We combed the island for any trace of him, but it was like he'd vanished into thin air.
His disappearance shook us to the core. The island was supposed to be uninhabited, yet here we were, down a man and with no plausible explanation. Fear had a new grip on us, but we had a job to do, and we pressed on.
The following nights were no different. Private Martinez, then Sergeant Mills, they all started disappearing one by one. Each morning, we would wake up to find an empty cot, a missing comrade, and no clues.
With every disappearance, a cold dread settled in. The island was silent except for the occasional rustling of leaves, and the regular hum of the ocean waves. The once comforting sound of nature now only served as a grim reminder of our predicament.
Soon, it was just me and Private Lewis. He was a young recruit, fresh out of boot camp. I could see the fear in his eyes, mirroring my own. We decided to stay awake, to watch out for whatever was taking us.
And then I saw it. A spectral entity, barely visible in the moonlight. It was ethereal, like a wisp of smoke, but with a menacing aura. It moved silently, blending with the shadows, making its way towards us.
As it approached, a cold wind blew, and I felt a chill that reached into my soul. The entity paused, its form flickering like a flame in the wind, before it moved again, this time towards Lewis.
Paralyzed by fear, I could only watch as the spectral entity advanced towards Private Lewis. His eyes widened as he saw the apparition, but before he could react, it was upon him. It seemed to consume him, its form swirling around him, a dance of shadows and dread. And then, with a gust of icy wind, they were both gone.
I was alone. Alone on an island that swallowed men whole, with a spectral entity that seemed straight out of a horror tale. I had faced enemy fire, survived grueling combat, but this...this was something else entirely.
Days turned into nights and nights into days. I lost track of time. I was running on instinct, surviving on fear. I made my camp near the beach, hoping the proximity to the ocean would offer some safety.
Every night, the entity would appear. It would circle my camp, a spectral predator stalking its prey. I could feel its malevolent presence, a chilling dread that seeped into my bones. But it never attacked, never came close. It was like it was toying with me, savoring its hunt.
I tried to communicate with the base, to call for extraction, but my communications gear was dead. I was cut off, trapped on this haunted island with no way out.
Every day, I would explore the island, searching for a way to escape. I found the structures we were sent to investigate, but they were abandoned, reclaimed by the island's vegetation. There were no signs of enemy activity, no signs of life at all. Just me and the entity.
The isolation, the fear, the anticipation of the nightly visits from the spectral entity, it was all driving me to the brink of madness. I could feel myself losing grip on reality, the lines between the waking world and my nightmares blurring.
And then, on what I assumed was the twelfth day, I found it. Hidden in the depths of the island, a cave. A cave with markings, symbols that seemed to depict the spectral entity. It showed figures, much like us Marines, being consumed by the entity, their forms disappearing into its spectral body.
But it also showed something else. A figure standing up to the entity, a figure holding a torch, its light seeming to repel the entity. It was a long shot, but it was the only hope I had.
Armed with the new information, I set about making a torch. It was a crude contraption, made from a sturdy branch and some cloth torn from my uniform, doused with the last of my emergency fuel. As night descended on the island, I was ready.
The entity made its appearance as usual, a horrifying spectacle of shadow and dread. I could feel its cold presence, see its form swirling on the periphery of my camp. But tonight, I had a plan.
I lit the torch, the flames catching quickly, casting a warm glow around me. The entity seemed to hesitate, its form flickering as if unsettled.
I stepped towards it, torch held out in front of me. The entity retreated, its form swirling and shifting, repelled by the light. For the first time since I landed on this godforsaken island, I felt a flicker of hope.
I pursued it, driving it back with the light of the torch. It retreated towards the cave, its form becoming increasingly unstable. As I followed it into the cave, I saw something that gave me pause.
Inside the cave, the spectral entity seemed to change. Its form became more solid, more defined. It was no longer just a mass of swirling shadows. It looked almost human.
Standing there, in the dim light of the torch, I realized the horrifying truth. The spectral entity, the horror that had been stalking me, was Private Lewis.
It seemed the island didn't just swallow men. It changed them, turned them into something otherworldly. As I stood there, facing the spectral form of my comrade, I made a choice.
I dropped the torch, extinguishing the flame. The spectral form of Lewis advanced, a sigh seeming to echo through the cave. I closed my eyes, ready to join my comrade.
But instead of the cold dread I was expecting, I felt a warmth. A comforting presence. When I opened my eyes, the spectral form of Lewis was gone. In its place stood Private Lewis, human and very much alive.
"Thank you, Sarge," he said, his voice echoing in the cave. "You freed me."
As the sun rose, we were extracted from the island. The spectral entity, the horror of the island, was gone. Private Lewis was back. The island was just an island again.
But the memory of that spectral entity, of what the island did to us, will forever haunt us. It's a reminder of the horrors that can lurk in the most unexpected places, and of the strength it takes to face them.
