2023.05.28 04:45 sapristi_cilantro Names related to fiber arts
I looked up the meaning of the name Penelope, and it's "weaver," which got me thinking: what other names are related to the fiber arts? Spinning, dyeing wool, etc?
I've heard that the name Walker comes from the job of walking on cloth to mix it with lye or mordants for dyeing. Any other ideas?
Full explanation of Penelope from Nameberry for those who are curious: Penelope is a name from Greek mythology; she was the wife of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. It has two possible origin stories—Penelope was either derived from the Greek pēnē, meaning "thread of a bobbin," or penelops, a type of duck. Mythological Penelope was cared for by a duck as an infant, and later was known for delaying her suiters by pretending to weave a garment while her husband was at sea.

2023.05.22 16:55 JohannesAr Are names in the Gen ch. 5 genealogy derivative of names in the Gen ch. 4 genealogy or viceversa?
The Gen ch. 5 genealogy seems to have been built from the Gen ch. 4 genealogy by repeating the pair (Adam - Cain) as (Enosh - Kenan), slightly changing 3 names, and then switching the positions of Enoch and Mahalalel. My question to users who are familiar with Biblical Hebrew is: is the case in any of the 3 pairs of similar names (Irad, Jared), (Mehujael, Mahalalel), (Methusael, Methuselah) that one name seems more "natural" and the other seems to have been constructed from it?
E.g., in contemporary English both "Edward" and "Edgar" are "natural" names, but
"Eddard" is clearly constructed from "Edward".
(This question has been crossposted to the /AskBibleScholars subreddit. If doing that is not well regarded here, please tell me.)

2023.05.20 00:01 evelyn_marie the top baby name of 2023 is Luxury
this is according to nameberry.com, not 100% sure if it’s accurate or not
thoughts on this? it’s pretty crazy to me, especially because most of the other names up there are perfectly normal
EDIT: looked into the name berry algorithm, they track what’s ‘top’ based off of the amount of likes the name has. so it’s not necessarily the most used so far, but the most popular!

2023.05.06 06:11 hugemessanon If you were a *modern* Puritan, what unusual name would you give your kid(s)?
One thing Puritans are remembered for--besides witch hunts!--is their unusual and/or over-the-top virtue names, such as Humiliation, Pride, or even
Nicholas If-Jesus-Christ-Had-Not-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned Barbon. While only a minority of Puritans gave their children
such extreme names, I thought it might be fun to take a page out of their book and make up our own extreme virtue names for the modern day.
I realize this might be kind of hard (I'm struggling to think of some lol), so feel free to share anything that feels relevant, like your favorite funny naming stories, or favorite Puritan names.
Here's a list of Puritan names I found if you're curious.
I do want to clarify that this is not meant to make fun of the concept of virtue names, or to mock anyone with an unusual name! So let's be funny, but kind.

2023.04.24 05:41 Apprehensive_Hat_144 Names related to Elysium
So, I was listening to a playlist of soundtracks and
Elysium from Gladiator came on which somehow got me to go down a rabbit hole into the concept of Elysium, and wondering if there were names derived from it. While I would never name a person
Elysium, according to Nameberry some people did start using it as a name about a year after Gladiator came out. Do any of you know if there are any good baby names derived from the mythological place name Elysium?

2023.04.19 04:50 Old-Initiative4665 Another Initials Question
My partner is due with our first child (a boy) in
June and we are thinking of names.
Our top choice name is currently
Asher Finn. There is a good chance he will go by
Finn. Switching the name order isn’t an option since our last name starts with G.
We’ve been discussing whether the AF initials would be problematic or not and if we should place a second middle name in there to break up the A and F, though it seems even more complicated to have our child go by their second middle name.
Asher is an honor name that we feel strongly about using in the first name spot and
Finn is one of the only names we both agree on.
So opinions needed, would AF as first/middle initials be a deal breaker?
Or are we overthinking it?
