I hear plenty saying that if Apollo has to shut down then they’ll say goodbye to Reddit and that it will be no bad thing to spend less time scrolling on their phone.
Whilst I understand the sentiment, here’s a different perspective. Some people need the outlet. Yes there are many negatives associated with social media, but there are also many positives and the default position shouldn’t always be that spending less time scrolling on your phone is a good thing.
I only started using Reddit as a result of Apollo. For so many reasons (which others have expressed in numerous posts so I won’t repeat here), the official Reddit app is a terrible experience and a real struggle to use.
Back in January when El Musko suddenly blocked third-party apps accessing the Twitter API, I lost my one other indispensable app, Tweetbot, which I’d been using for years. The official Twitter app is, like the Reddit app, flawed in so many ways. As a result, my use of Twitter dropped off dramatically which contributed to a dip in my mental health.
That’s my experience and others may feel differently. To now face losing Apollo isn’t good. Christian has created a wonderful app and community.
I’ve paid for ultra lifetime and personally would happily pay a subscription to keep using Apollo.

I checked this album out for the first time about a month ago and it's been on HEAVY repeat since. It recently came to my attention that the last 2 songs have backwards narratives and that the album should be played backwards conceptually, so I did just that. Here is my dissection of the story from what I picked up:
At the end of the Spring interlude, you can hear a kid ask "who's up?" which soon transitions into the arcade machine noises at the start of They Resurrect Over New. Throughout the song, there are video game references as well as bars like "trapped in a game were the trap is the game" which allude to the idea that the body of the album takes place within a metaphorical (or physical?) video game.
I had a hard time dissecting Adoration Of The Magi, but the chorus and the third verse make it seem like it's about exposure to a sinful life being common in poor areas. Kids "playing in the streets" and having teardrop tattoos (symbolic of catching bodies) is a real plague, and the third verse talking about "Can't be eyes closed when you side scroll" followed by lines about the reflection of said character's life from birth up until the present contributes to this "life is a video game" concept. Madonna is a storytelling song from the perspective of a kid trying to help his drug-addicted single mother live a better life. He unfortunately gets locked up "working" which implies his work isn't legal. Deliver is pretty self-explanatory, about how Chicago has gotten so bad that even pizza delivery men don't want to step foot into the ghetto. "Too much dough" in the chorus is also pretty dope wordplay. I didn't completely get the concept of Chopper, but there are plenty of lines about people from the hood wandering around in cheap white tees and loaded guns while struggling to afford food and other amenities in life. The chorus also helps this idea.
Winter is completely different lyrically and sonically, perhaps our character's next chapter of life: adulthood, where he has made it out of the ghetto but now has issues with others in his life. No Scratches is about getting out of a bad situation before it is escalated to a point of no return, specifically a relationship. The chorus lines "before we hit a wall, heartbreak, and it crashes, just walk away, no scratches" solidify this, although I had trouble deciphering the verses outside of some lines. Body Of Work seems to be about, in short, Hip-Hop being embedded within Lupe as a part of his "anatomy". As for Little Death, I watched an interview the other day where Lupe said the song has like 5 different narratives running through it, but I really just couldn't pick anything up from the track. I did notice that the chorus was slightly different each time and kinda related to the verse it followed, such as the second chorus saying "howl at the prey" following the verse with animal wordplay.
Now, Prisoner 1 & 2 is a very hefty song lyrically. It starts with a character getting arrested and charged with a double-life sentence while his wife escaped. The second verse takes place ten years into his sentence, where he has studied law books inside of prison and has grown accustomed to the wardens' corrupt ways. His last resort is praying to god for freedom and justice to no avail. He even starts to question religion by "tryna find dinosaurs in the Bible". The third verse shows him much further into his sentence where he is losing his mind. He banged on the glass and fantasized escaping by getting lifted by a helicopter, digging a tunnel out, quite literally everything. The line "when your life is just a number and release date" ties this to Lupe's relationship with his label, who had held this album hostage until they were forced to announce a release date. After a phone call-like interlude from Ayesha Jaco, a HARD synth kicks in with one verse from the perspective of a prisoner mocking the guards for essentially being prisoners to their workplace during their shift, and a second verse from the perspective of a brainwashed prisoner who sides with his overseers and has come to believe that he is being done right by the system. This song is fucking hard and probably my favorite on the album.
After that behemoth of a song comes the Fall interlude where you can hear a menacing violin on top of the sound of kids playing in leaves, which could be the album's main character's life coming full circle and starting from childhood again? This makes sense to me since Dots & Lines has such a cheery sound as well as bars about drawing simple shapes: something kids do at the very beginning of their academic journey. "Go straight, don't sine" is an awesome double entendre, meaning both going straight rather than the direction of a sine wave as well as "don't sign" to a label: a big mistake that Lupe definitely regretted. I was completely lost on Blur My Hands so I'm not even gonna try dissecting that song.
Finally, we get to Mural: an 8-minute-long bar fest. Throughout this track, Lupe paints metaphorical images of many ideas that he wants to see visualized within his lifetime. The "girls reign all over the world"/rain scheme was incredible, and so was the whole "treat your vocal chords like a fortress" rhyme scheme. I picked up a ton of intricate rhyming and imagery throughout the song, but I don't think I should sit here and type out every single detail unless I want to spend the next 5 hours doing so.
Long story short, the album follows a character played in a 2D side-scrolling video game. It starts out from the character's rough childhood surrounded by guns, crime, and drugs. It continues through his adulthood where he has troubles with relationships, sees his friends get locked up, and fights for social issues. The final stretch of the album feels like a new beginning, where our character revisits his childhood in an alternate timeline where he didn't have to suffer through a crime-ridden atmosphere. Mural closes the album by painting a beautiful picture of a seemingly utopian society.
It's 3AM and I doubt any of this is even right, but I needed to write this down somewhere or else I would go insane. What do you guys think?

2023.06.03 02:34 BurkesRevenge My thoughts playing Pokémon Shield for the first time 4ish years after release
So I'm a little bit of a late adopter and cheapskate when it comes to gaming; There's enough published material out there to keep anyone busy for a lifetime already, and more often than not games underwhelm me anyhow. I finally broke down and bought a copy of Shield on eBay for $30. These are my thoughts so far:
Story beats: To be honest, I don't mind the plot in Shield. It's un-intrusive and feels like the narrative takes a backseat to gameplay; I like that. Hop is an annoying sht, but your rival is kinda supposed to be. I dig the "mythology covering up an alien invasion" plot device as well. I loved Stargate back in the day so that plays well with me, although they should have borrowed more from the Arthurian cycle or the Mabinogion. Team Yell is a cool riff on football hooligans with a dumb name; I'm fine with them. My other big complaint is that you just get handed so many things: You don't really earn the champion's endorsement, sky taxis, bikes, dynamax, etc. Everything basically gets handed to you and it feels cheap and shallow, as well as reducing quests. *B+
Gyms: Honestly I've never been satisfied with gyms in Pokémon. Considering how linear the routes are, I wish more effort had been put into the gym layout. On the other hand, the additional structure to the gym challenge is cool and the designs and teams for the leaders are fun enough considering Gamefreak/TPC insists on monotypes and partial teams. Flat C
Mon Design: The new monsters mostly have that Pokémon feel instead of feeling like digimon, and there's some cool shoutouts to English heritage (Tower Ravens and Danelaw, Punk Rock, Corgis, etc). Would have liked to see a few more monsters based on British flora (thistles, currants, roses) and some more Welsh and Scottish inspired monsters (Red and White dragon mythics, red deer, reivers, woad-painted warriors, etc). A Pokémon line with subtle references to the Compleat Angler would have been comfy. Corviknight and Galarian Ponyta line are new favorites. I was pretty disappointed by the starters however; Final forms are either too humanoid or don't match the British theming at all. The Sobble line in particular was a missed opportunity to do a watedragon literal Francis "Drake". B+
Atmosphere: I'm a massive Anglophile so I'm pretty biased, but I was sold the moment the starting area looked like a little slice of the Cotswolds or Yorkshire Dales. Each area had its own vibe and felt English, with the little linguistic tics adding to that feel. That said, gamefreak missed out on a chance to consistently use appropriate prefixes and suffixes from Saxon place names to make the town names feel really English (e.g Hulbury ought to have been Hulport or Hulchester while Hammerlocke should have been Hammerbury, but Postwick was appropriately named). Which fits the general trend for the atmosphere: It was very pretty, but only an inch deep. The sheer shallowness of it all is a major letdown for me because I really want to enjoy this region, but it doesn't have the Sinnoh-tier lore it deserves. Also the music would have been better served imo from borrowing a few more motifs from English folk instead of every town having bad generic rock tracks. Disappointing lack of hedges. B+
Exploration: Outside the wild area it basically doesn't exist. Where are the dungeons? Where are the secrets? I want to frolic in a heather and explore dales and moors, but I got a hallway simulator. My understanding is the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra fix this, but DLC is not in this month's budget so we'll see. D
Difficulty: Auto EXP share out the gate is absurd, but that said it might be on me for not trying enough new Pokémon on my team. I think it's cool that you're able to do so without being punished with a lot of grinding. Mid battles aren't balanced out by challenging dungeons and puzzles. I know it's a game that kids should be able to enjoy, but give kids a modicum of credit. F
Quality of life/Gameplay improvements: Early "fly" in the form of Taxis is a Godsend (if somewhat redundant with trains), no HMs in general is great. As is being able to pick which Pokémon to send to the PC. I also don't mind being reminded with subscripts which moves are super effective and ineffective for mons in my dex. Pokémon roaming the over world is a step up and makes shiny chaining easier (but not faster lol). A
Overall grade: C+ Pokémon Shield is like the brunette cheerleader I had a crush on in High School, really pretty and appealing, I'd have a great time at prom, but she's not that deep and not a great match for me. I was so hyped to try the "UK Pokémon" so I'm definitely more disappointed than if it were just another Japan themed region, and that might make me a bit harsh on what feels like a proof of concept for home console based Pokémon. Maybe when I'm in my 40s I'll get to revisit a more fleshed out Galar.

2023.06.02 23:58 bakariwolf Saga of the Professional DM! Part 4 The end.
The week went by and everyone kind of just forgot the last session until we all met outside the game shop and saw Barbarian and Druid waiting for us. Seems the weight of the last session had just come crashing back down on them and they were debating on going in at all. Bard and Paladin were already there chatting it up with DM and seeming to have fun. A little talking and we all decided to see where this lead.
Of course as we traveled DM insisted that we roleplay our actions to the extreme as if she wanted a reward for what she did last time. None of us really were in the mood and each explained in their own diplomatic way that we would like to skip to the next town. However Paladin was all up for roleplay. After all we had gotten to explain our backstory so he should get a turn. We agreed thinking it wouldn't take long for him to get on the same page as the rest of us.
Two hours later I have pulled out my laptop to work on some writing, and everyone else is looking at their phones or books while Paladin is still talking. He apparently loves the intense roleplay of describing in great detail all his actions with a hammy over the top way of speaking. His backstory is a line of adventures stolen from his favorite video games. Defeating evil Barron Von Bowser to save Princess Peaches, taking the head of the arch wizard Gannon to lift the curse on a sleeping princess, slaying the evil dragon of the north known as Seath the scalesess to save a blind holy woman, and riding off into the sunset on an axe beak with a young maiden after beating an evil lord named Sephiroth. Just to name a few. This kept on to the point I wanted to remind him he was level two but DM was loving it and on the edge of her seat.
Our saving grace was Bard who spoke up and said that we would break for camp. The next town was two nights away so might as well get one night behind us. Again we got a random encounter roll and again "Oh my this never happens you are all just so lucky, no encounter isn't that great?" The rest of us are angry but we remain diplomatic. Asking, pleading that we have an encounter so we can level up. Everyone wanted to fight the dragons and we needed levels but nope. She had played for FIFTEEN YEARS and THIS WAS THE RULES.
Another hour of stolen game cut scenes from Paladin and we made camp once more. Once again lucky us, no encounter. We begged offering to even roleplay with the enemies having banter and what not. No dice, it was the rules after all and you can't bend the rules... A bit more and we make it to town. At this point we hush Paladin, everyone is ravenous. We are rolling social skills, stopping people, asking questions, anything to get us our next job in hopes that we can level up, anything to further the story. Forget being nice, we were the rudest people you had ever met grabbing any NPC the DM said existed and ganging up on them venomously shouting. "What problems do you have in town?! Anything we don't care even if it's minor. Tell us, we'll even kill rats, got a goblin problem? Kobolds? Seen an undead? Do you just not like someone? GIVE US ANYTHING!"
Barbarian was so desperate he even asked the DM if starting a fight would be survivable and get us XP. She explained that everyone in the entire fishing city was either our level or lower and harming them wouldn't give us any XP what so ever. She went on to say that we didn't find any job hirings, the only thing people were talking about was how the fishing had dried up.
The moment we heard that Wizard, Cleric, and I in unison turned and said "DRUID! You're up. lets get you to the docks." We rushed everyone to the docks, and wanted to hire a ship. The only ship available was a war ship that was docked for resupply. We talked to the captain and paid him nearly every bit of gold we had to rent his ship. So we were out on the ocean and the druid was doing his thing in a small boat while we waited. Calling forth some fish and using a ritual speak with animals to get the information. All of us were very proud of Druid, he came back and we had the answer. Seems some creature had entered into the bay, druid pointed to a sunken single man sailing ship that we could see the mast sticking ten feet out of the water. So fairly shallow water, this is important.
Whatever had scared the fish was there. We sailed over to it and DM goes into her description. Talking about from the ship comes a massive shadow that dwarfs the ship we are on, so large it makes it look like a bath toy. The shadow swims under the ship and it takes half a minute before it is past. As it moves large tentacles are seen breaking the surface of the water.
Druid rolled nature and all of us aided him. He got a fairly high roll and DM informed us that we had just seen a Kraken. I was dumbfounded, how the heck was a Kraken living in a small sail boat when it dwarfed a war ship, and how the heck was it in this shallow of water!? So I asked "We know what it is can I look up the information?" She said ok and I asked what one she was using 3.5 or 5e it was the 5e one so I turned to it and pointed asking "You mean this?" She confirmed the CR 23 monster as the one we had just seen.
Barbarian who only looked at the picture. "Awesome!" Druid "Bet we can take that." Wizard "no we can't. It's CR 23." Barbarian "Cap!" Druid "Does this mean we have to run away again?" DM All smiles "Yep now you have an important second goal! You're so lucky."
Now I will say here I know I am in the wrong for what I did. It is always important to have good communication and talk things out, however we had tried that, I was frustrated, and I wasn't thinking straight. So I became that guy.
DM " When when you run away you have a couple of options you can go to..." Me "Nope we aren't running away. We're gunna fight it." DM "What? You can't." Me "Sure we can, it's here, we're here, we're going to fight it I know everything about them you said so lets see what we can do. Captain how many guns on this ship? Do you have harpoons big ones? It was amazing, a moment of depression turned to a slight moment of confusion and then everyone was on board even Paladin who didn't get what was going on. Everyone was suddenly excited. Barbarian looked for the harpoons, took three of them and said he was rolling strength to bend them, didn't even wait for the DM to say if he could just rolled and explained how he was making a giant fish hook as his weapon of choice. Taking out rations and spearing them on as bait. Druid Rushed down asking how many barrels of gun powder he could find. Cleric was talking to the crew asking for anything that burned, wood, lamp oil, explosives of any kind. I went about telling everyone this was our ship and we were headed back to town why settle for what the ship had, we were going to raid the town for supplies. Druid pointed out we spent all our gold and I told him. "We are doing this for the good of the kingdom, we'll steal what we need and pay them back later. Lets get this thing!"
DM tried to gain control of her game back as we were going at a pace she couldn't handle, she said the captain was demanding we leave his ship alone and since it was the only ship he was sailing away and leaving us in the city, we couldn't have his ship.
The party was invested now though. Everyone was excited and having more fun then we had since the start. We reminded her that she stated no one was over our level so we would fight the captain and take his ship if we had to. Threatening him that if he didn't get off and leave the ship he would be dead. She relented and had the captain and crew leave. Cleric and I agreed we'd stay to guard the ship and get things ready on it while the party went to gather more things to kill the Kraken. People were looking at skills, abilities, and items. Looking through the book for anything that could help us and asking the DM if the city had it. Shop after shop the blood thirsty adventurers went demanding goods to fight off the threat. Never really telling the people why we needed it or what it was for but insisting there was a danger that would destroy the city, maybe the kingdom if they didn't cooperate. The DM wasn't given a break to process, when one question was answered another was asked. If we couldn't get something we got the next best thing. If we couldn't find a finished product we took the stuff to make it. She was having to improve on the fly and I could see it was taking a tole on her, where since the start she had a look of absolute authority and command, now she was a frazzled mess.
I would have felt bad, I should have felt bad, however from the rest of the players I heard something that I hadn't heard since day one, laugher and excitement. They didn't care I had told them it was impossible. They didn't care I had pointed out we would die and be on character generation. They now had a chance. Even if it was an impossible chance it was a chance to do something and try.
DM "Look if you do this you're all going to end up dead. You can't bet it at your level." She was trying to get us back to just running away and for a moment things stopped. Me "I hope my character doesn't die. I have a cousin in this down, he's a warlock too and he'd be so upset I think he'd go after the thing as well." Wizard laughed and joined in. "Oh yeah my sister has a shop here, if I died without saying hi to her she'd make that thing burn."
Druid and Barbarian got the message, we had all played video games. If we couldn't beat it with these characters we had a city with a population of 6000 possible back up characters to zerg rush it. So plans kept on going, players kept searching for a way to give us the best possible chance of doing this or surviving a couple of rounds because that would be an accomplishment in itself. We were making bombs, alchemical items, improvised weapons. Getting ready every spell and ability we had to try this. When gaming was called the DM and Bard left while the rest of us stayed around for probably a half hour more talking about the plan, joking, and just having fun. All of us left with a smile on our faces.
When I got home I had a message on my answering machine from DM informing me that I wasn't the DM and how dare I highjack her game. That I was a horrible player and I better fall in line because I had her crying. She made some threats about hurting herself if I didn't stop which I hope were lies meant to make me feel bad, and ended the message telling me if I called her back she would call the cops on me. A threat I wasn't going to test. I saved the message for proof later if I needed it and the week passed. When we all met at the shop the next week Bard said DM would be late. We were all still joking and having fun talking about our big plan for the TPK and making joke bets like "If we last three rounds your new character owes mine five gold." It was great.
Time passed though and no DM so we asked Bard what was up. He informed us then that she had texted. Said I ruined her game and she wasn't going to play with people who didn't understand the rules of dungeons and dragons. We broke out magic the gathering cards and played a few hands before heading home all a little disappointed that we couldn't see how far we would have gotten. A little while later I think a couple of months I was telling the story at the shop and Wizard kept making hand motions at me. I asked what was up and he face palmed saying "That's her older brother." Well I had already put my foot in my mouth voicing my displeasure so I figured one more question wouldn't hurt. "Sorry, but it was a bit of a mess of a game. This is my opinion as a player. I know she's family and all so hate me if you like but I am honest. I will ask though, how long has she actually been DMing."
The brother didn't mind and informed me that she had DMed 2 games for him, his younger brother, and their father when she was a child. That was it and they were both one shot things with their father doing most of the work. She never came back to the game shop and I think she moved states, I've never seen her since.

Of course as we traveled DM insisted that we roleplay our actions to the extreme as if she wanted a reward for what she did last time. None of us really were in the mood and each explained in their own diplomatic way that we would like to skip to the next town. However Paladin was all up for roleplay. After all we had gotten to explain our backstory so he should get a turn. We agreed thinking it wouldn't take long for him to get on the same page as the rest of us.
Two hours later I have pulled out my laptop to work on some writing, and everyone else is looking at their phones or books while Paladin is still talking. He apparently loves the intense roleplay of describing in great detail all his actions with a hammy over the top way of speaking. His backstory is a line of adventures stolen from his favorite video games. Defeating evil Barron Von Bowser to save Princess Peaches, taking the head of the arch wizard Gannon to lift the curse on a sleeping princess, slaying the evil dragon of the north known as Seath the scalesess to save a blind holy woman, and riding off into the sunset on an axe beak with a young maiden after beating an evil lord named Sephiroth. Just to name a few. This kept on to the point I wanted to remind him he was level two but DM was loving it and on the edge of her seat.
Our saving grace was Bard who spoke up and said that we would break for camp. The next town was two nights away so might as well get one night behind us. Again we got a random encounter roll and again "Oh my this never happens you are all just so lucky, no encounter isn't that great?" The rest of us are angry but we remain diplomatic. Asking, pleading that we have an encounter so we can level up. Everyone wanted to fight the dragons and we needed levels but nope. She had played for FIFTEEN YEARS and THIS WAS THE RULES.
Another hour of stolen game cut scenes from Paladin and we made camp once more. Once again lucky us, no encounter. We begged offering to even roleplay with the enemies having banter and what not. No dice, it was the rules after all and you can't bend the rules... A bit more and we make it to town. At this point we hush Paladin, everyone is ravenous. We are rolling social skills, stopping people, asking questions, anything to get us our next job in hopes that we can level up, anything to further the story. Forget being nice, we were the rudest people you had ever met grabbing any NPC the DM said existed and ganging up on them venomously shouting. "What problems do you have in town?! Anything we don't care even if it's minor. Tell us, we'll even kill rats, got a goblin problem? Kobolds? Seen an undead? Do you just not like someone? GIVE US ANYTHING!"
Barbarian was so desperate he even asked the DM if starting a fight would be survivable and get us XP. She explained that everyone in the entire fishing city was either our level or lower and harming them wouldn't give us any XP what so ever. She went on to say that we didn't find any job hirings, the only thing people were talking about was how the fishing had dried up.
The moment we heard that Wizard, Cleric, and I in unison turned and said "DRUID! You're up. lets get you to the docks." We rushed everyone to the docks, and wanted to hire a ship. The only ship available was a war ship that was docked for resupply. We talked to the captain and paid him nearly every bit of gold we had to rent his ship. So we were out on the ocean and the druid was doing his thing in a small boat while we waited. Calling forth some fish and using a ritual speak with animals to get the information. All of us were very proud of Druid, he came back and we had the answer. Seems some creature had entered into the bay, druid pointed to a sunken single man sailing ship that we could see the mast sticking ten feet out of the water. So fairly shallow water, this is important.
Whatever had scared the fish was there. We sailed over to it and DM goes into her description. Talking about from the ship comes a massive shadow that dwarfs the ship we are on, so large it makes it look like a bath toy. The shadow swims under the ship and it takes half a minute before it is past. As it moves large tentacles are seen breaking the surface of the water.
Druid rolled nature and all of us aided him. He got a fairly high roll and DM informed us that we had just seen a Kraken. I was dumbfounded, how the heck was a Kraken living in a small sail boat when it dwarfed a war ship, and how the heck was it in this shallow of water!? So I asked "We know what it is can I look up the information?" She said ok and I asked what one she was using 3.5 or 5e it was the 5e one so I turned to it and pointed asking "You mean this?" She confirmed the CR 23 monster as the one we had just seen.
Barbarian who only looked at the picture. "Awesome!" Druid "Bet we can take that." Wizard "no we can't. It's CR 23." Barbarian "Cap!" Druid "Does this mean we have to run away again?" DM All smiles "Yep now you have an important second goal! You're so lucky."
Now I will say here I know I am in the wrong for what I did. It is always important to have good communication and talk things out, however we had tried that, I was frustrated, and I wasn't thinking straight. So I became that guy.

I have chosen five races at Belmont Park and 2 races at Woodbine on Saturday June 3, 2023 that I am willing to take a shot at and hopefully find my next nice score. I will not be betting the last race at Belmont individually, but it is the last race of the late P5 which I will take a couple of small shots at. I have always preferred to get as many shots as I can to hit some type of exotics in one or two races but believe spreading in any pick type sequences is not the best use of my money. Much prefer using a few dollars every race and get more opportunities every day compared to putting all my eggs in one sequence and watching them all break when one horse or race does not go as expected.

Belmont Park 4th Race: Maiden Special Weight --- Purse $75,000 --- 3 YOs & Up NY Bred Fillies & Mares --- 7 Furlongs Turf:
1)Ace Up Her Sleeve (12-1) Has 10 lifetime starts with 4 starts and 3 thirds since the beginning of this year. In her last three starts she was tried twice on the AWT in sprints against open company and then shipped back to NY to face state breds in a turf sprint, but race was moved to a muddy dirt track where she was well beaten but managed to get up for third. One slow work since at Delaware Park. Dialed In - Clearly Cheating by Broken Vow. 3x3 to Storm Cat, 4(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Blushing Groom, 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Secretariat. As usual, most interested in her broodmare sire, Broken Vow, to figure out what distance is best for this runner, and I believe turf sprinting is the answer for this one. Broken Vow as a G2 SW on dirt but plenty of his progeny has won on grass up to a mile and he has a daughter (Broken Dreams) similar bred to this one's dam that won 3 stakes turf sprints including 2 of them G3 stakes and banked just shy of $400K. Fits with these.
6)La Chance (50-1) Has started 10 times in her career and has one second in 4 starts this year as her only board finish in her first ten starts. She will need her best effort yet but has the bloodlines to upset this field at a huge price. Her last two races and her recent works gives a clue that improvement is on the way after getting a trainer that acts like he knows what he is trying to achieve and gets her first real chance on grass. Looking At Lucky - One Wise Cowgirl by Wiseman's Ferry. 4x5 to Clever Trick. Her sire, Looking at Lucky, was a Champion 2 YO and Champion 3 YO on dirt in the U.S. and broodmare sire, Wiseman's Ferry, won a couple of G3 dirt stakes at 9 furlongs but is best remembered as sire of Wise Dan, who was good on dirt to begin his career but took his popularity to an entirely different level by winning 14 of his last 15 starts on grass with 1 second and 15 of 17 overall, with every grass start against either G1 or G2 competition. La Chance's dam, One Wise Cowgirl, has also produced a G1 sprint SW on dirt (Haveyougoneaway).
4)Cerretta (8-1) has started once this year finishing 3rd in a grass sprint but also started 7 times last year with a second and a third her other two board finishes. Has four decent to useful works since her last start which should move her forward. Midnight Lute - Lift by Pulpit. 5x4 to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Raise A Native & Secretariat.
7)Souffle (2-1) started twice last year, finishing second in her first start on grass as the favorite before returning as an odds-on heavy favorite and finished 4th after getting beaten to the early lead and then coming up empty late. This is her first start this year and trainer Clement is good at hiding which one of his trainees is ready to win first back or may need a race or two but normally uses Rosario when he thinks one is live and he does so here also. Will also race with lasix for the first time. Candy Ride - Portmagee by Hard Spun. 5x4 to Mr. Prospector. Both Candy Ride and Hard Spun are known for their high speed in mid-distance races especially but dam, Portmagee, won one 6 furlongs grass sprint in her career but falter both times when asked to go just slightly further.

Returned in March in a G3 stakes and sat close up early behind a crawling pace and faded after a half mile on grass. Cut back to 6 furlongs in her next start, she sat just behind the two early leaders in third, was sent after a half after the front runner had put only early challenger away but could not get by and hung in deep stretch to lose 2nd nearing the wire in this class and conditions. She has 4 more works in typical Brown style but should be getting close to her best effort. Tornado - Ivory Style by Desert Style. 4(C)x5(F)x5(F)x5(F) to Northern Dancer, 5x4 to Danzig, 5x5 to Special. Anna Karenine's 4th dam, Ivory Wand, is also 2nd dam of Elusive Quality, and this dam line flows back through Frizette, an important member of family #13.
9) Redifined (5-1) has one start this year where she tracked a fast early pace but came up empty in the stretch run in an O/C allowance race. However, she broke her maiden in the first start of her career, then competed in 3 stakes races, 2 of them listed and the other a G3 stakes where she placed in all three. She has recorded 3 very good works since her last race and is the one to beat. More Than Ready - Mrs. Boss by Wild Event. 4x5 to Northern Dancer, 5x5 to Nearctic.
5) Dekanter (12-1) has started twice this year which was also her first two starts of her career and finished 3rd on dirt, then won a maiden special weight race on grass in fairly fast time but it was during a small period when Aqueduct's grass course was blistering fast. Has 4 more works since her last start, none that are eye catching but all done on a 7-day then 6-day splits which is what you (or at least I) want to see from grass runners instead of fast works. Kantharos - Morning Rush by Unbridled's Song. 4x4 to Storm Cat, 5(C)x5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Mr Prospector.
8) Michele M. (15-1) started twice last year, both time on the AWT, breaking her maiden in her first start before finishing unplaced in a Canadian listed stake. She will be making her first start of this year, first start on grass in her career and first start for a new trainer that wins often on grass but tends to struggle with trainees first start on grass. West Coast - Juliamarie by Mizzen Mast. 4x4 to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Secretariat, 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Raise A Native. Dam line traces back to Penelope/Prunella and the most influential family #1 in bloodlines history, without a doubt.

8)Redistricting (3-1) is a first-time starter. It looks like his training started under another barn, then was a private purchase by current owner (private or purchases away from sales are not reported in most cases), then has a consistent work pattern for current trainer Brown with only one small break in his training that lasted 10 days until the day after the Ky Derby (likely concentrating on runners already entered to race). None of his works are eye catching but his last 9 works have all been at 4 furlongs officially, which is the normal Brown pattern. Kingman - Cascata by Montjeu. 4x4 to Kris, 5x4 to Northern Dancer.
1)Certified Loverboy (20-1) has started once this year where he tracked the early pace for 6 furlongs, then faded near the rail as the slow early pace quicken in a maiden race at 1 1/8 mile on grass, which is likely a little further than he is bred to excel at. Now cuts back 1/16 mile, which fits his bloodlines better and has one useful work since that start and returns to jockey who likely knows him better than others. Mendelsohn - Tasha's Moon by Malibu Moon. 4x4 to Mr. Prospector. Dam family traces back to family #3 which is the family of Sister One To True Blue, a daughter of a Byerley Turk mare who, along with her full brother Young True Blue, is most responsible for the formation of the 2nd X-factor gene family.
6)Ohana Honor (8-1) has two starts this year, the first on GP speed favoring dirt track where he tried to impact the race from well off the pace but had no real opportunity to do so. Next out, he was shipped to Aqueduct and moved to grass for the first grass start of his career where he was rolling in the stretch to just miss winning but also encountered enough trouble to make him late arriving to compete. Trainer Shug has put 6 more works in him since that effort, the first 4 useful works and then 2 easy works just to let him stretch his legs until a spot could be found to race him. Has the look of a trainer who is serious about breaking this one's maiden. Honor Code - Spacy Tracy by Awesome Again. 4x5 to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Bold Ruler, 5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Northern Dancer. Dam has already produced 3 stakes winners from 6 known foals to race, including this one.
7)Fly Right (6-1) is making his first start of the year after making three starts last year and drew near the rail in every start, thereby forcing jockey to send him early for the lead to avoid being trapped (at least perceived by most). He has 10 works for his return, including last 9 at Belmont Park, but his last 4 works should have him fit and ready. Also goes first-time lasix. Astern - Fly By by Johar. 4x5 to Sadler's Wells, 5x5 to Danzig. 6th dam, Where You Lead, is an important and influential broodmare.

Will find these fits his current ability much better and looks like a solid key in the pick exotics. Has 6 works since his last start and most of them shows he still has a desire to be competitive. 9) Miramichi (15-1) has one start on the AWT at 4 1/2 furlongs, but drew outside on a rainy track which is usually the worst place to be, and the one just inside her got better break and she chased them throughout as they pull away while closest to the rail and she lost third at the wire to a late runner. Returns in two weeks but has another good 4 furlongs work since that start.

2) Bay Storm (3-1) has three starts this year with 2 seconds and one third. She has been an ultra-consistent runner throughout her career, missing a placing once in her 14 lifetime starts. While this looks like a step up for her into G2 company, it is actually a step down in class as she has missed twice to odds-on G1 winning fillies in her last 5 starts while 2nd both times, including beaten a nose by one of them. She will be going back on lasix for the first time in a while. 4x4 to Storm Cat.
8) Baby No Worries (12-1) has started four times this year, winning her first start in an allowance race on the AWT at TP with a good late kick to get up in time, then finishing 2nd in a small stakes race at same track in her third start using a good late kick again to just miss before finishing 3rd in her last start against the probable favorite in here in a G3 stakes race at this track with another good late kick. She has the look of finally putting it all together as she gets more racing experience and is also moving back to grass. 5x5 to Hoist The Flag & My Charmer.
5) Our Flash Drive (9-5) has started once this year and made it a winning effort in a G3 stakes race on the AWT at her home track here. She switches back to turf here where if she has a weakness, it is on grass as only one of her stake wins have come on that surface. However, all her grass tries have been in the U.S. where the competition is usually much tougher and since she is back on her home turf, so she deserves to be the favorite. One useful work since her last start. Outcross in her first 5 generations but has Nasrullah influences on both sides.
6) Sweet Enough (20-1) has started 3 times this year in two G3 stakes and a listed stakes race in the U.S. and has not placed. However, in all three starts, she was beaten by horses that would be vying for favoritism in here and her last indicated she is near to regaining her best form. Trainer is one of Canada's best and he has put 5 more works in her, the last three very good and indicates this filly is still moving forward. She will be racing on lasix for the first time this year. 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector.

Belmont Park 4th Race: Maiden Special Weight --- Purse $75,000 --- 3 YOs & Up NY Bred Fillies & Mares --- 7 Furlongs Turf:
1)Ace Up Her Sleeve (12-1) Has 10 lifetime starts with 4 starts and 3 thirds since the beginning of this year. In her last three starts she was tried twice on the AWT in sprints against open company and then shipped back to NY to face state breds in a turf sprint, but race was moved to a muddy dirt track where she was well beaten but managed to get up for third. One slow work since at Delaware Park. Dialed In - Clearly Cheating by Broken Vow. 3x3 to Storm Cat, 4(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Blushing Groom, 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Secretariat. As usual, most interested in her broodmare sire, Broken Vow, to figure out what distance is best for this runner, and I believe turf sprinting is the answer for this one. Broken Vow as a G2 SW on dirt but plenty of his progeny has won on grass up to a mile and he has a daughter (Broken Dreams) similar bred to this one's dam that won 3 stakes turf sprints including 2 of them G3 stakes and banked just shy of $400K. Fits with these.
6)La Chance (50-1) Has started 10 times in her career and has one second in 4 starts this year as her only board finish in her first ten starts. She will need her best effort yet but has the bloodlines to upset this field at a huge price. Her last two races and her recent works gives a clue that improvement is on the way after getting a trainer that acts like he knows what he is trying to achieve and gets her first real chance on grass. Looking At Lucky - One Wise Cowgirl by Wiseman's Ferry. 4x5 to Clever Trick. Her sire, Looking at Lucky, was a Champion 2 YO and Champion 3 YO on dirt in the U.S. and broodmare sire, Wiseman's Ferry, won a couple of G3 dirt stakes at 9 furlongs but is best remembered as sire of Wise Dan, who was good on dirt to begin his career but took his popularity to an entirely different level by winning 14 of his last 15 starts on grass with 1 second and 15 of 17 overall, with every grass start against either G1 or G2 competition. 5) Our Flash Drive (9-5) has started once this year and made it a winning effort in a G3 stakes race on the AWT at her home track here. She switches back to turf here where if she has a weakness, it is on grass as only one of her stake wins have come on that surface. However, all her grass tries have been in the U.S. where the competition is usually much tougher and since she is back on her home turf, so she deserves to be the favorite. One useful work since her last start. Outcross in her first 5 generations but has Nasrullah influences on both sides.
6) Sweet Enough (20-1) has started 3 times this year in two G3 stakes and a listed stakes race in the U.S. and has not placed. However, in all three starts, she was beaten by horses that would be vying for favoritism in here and her last indicated she is near to regaining her best form. Trainer is one of Canada's best and he has put 5 more works in her, the last three very good and indicates this filly is still moving forward. She will be racing on lasix for the first time this year. 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector.

Hi! This is my first post on Reddit of this type, but I’ve had enough and just need to get this off my chest. I’ll try to be as short as possible.
Edit: I am adding this after finishing writing the post, close to the end I became an absolute mess, apologies in advance.
Anyways, to better understand the title and whole situation, I need to go back to the start. At the very beginning of the story I (F19) was 17 years old. We had just returned to attend school after the whole covid fiasco. We had to spend all the time in one classroom including breaks etc. as we were not allowed to go out, unless it’s the end of the classes for the day. I had a friend (F16), we were close, but nothing deep (she’s not that important, just a school assignment), we were sitting in the same row. In front of us was sitting a boy (M16), whose name I barely knew and… that was all I actually knew. Due to covid, we never got to hear him, or talk to him and so on. But, what I noticed is that he didn’t have any interactions with other classmates, he was always on his phone, barely spoke to teachers, you get the picture.
As the universe likes to play, we got assigned to do a project for the year (the three of us), so naturally we were forced to get in contact. At first it was just me making a group chat, and telling him he’s assigned to do a project with us (as he was absent that day). When he returned to school he was again, sitting, mentally isolated from the world. But I began to make small talk with him for a few days. At first, it was because I kinda felt sad for him, but after just one -not small talk- conversation I realized that he was an incredibly intelligent and genuinely interesting person. So, as I was and still am a very curious person, I knew immediately that I wanted to know more about him. I started texting him, talking with him and so on. For months I was the first one to text, to set up conversations, but it didn’t bother me, ‘cause he was showing interest in everything I was saying, so I felt comfortable.
As time went on, I grew more comfortable, but so did he. We were texting 24/7, had discord nights, up until very late (or rather early). Few times when I fell asleep in those calls he would either play me lullabies or just keep doing whatever while still staying in the call in case I woke up. He’s also a gamer, and every free second he had either during the game or in the pauses he’d be texting me. I still didn’t know much about him, despite everything, he still wasn’t big of a talker, but he knew almost everything about me. Also to mention he’s only a few months younger than me.
In order to continue with the story I have to tell you a little bit about myself. I had a very hard childhood, and perhaps even harder teen years. I am on a spectrum of anxiety and depression. I have attachment issues and I have extremely hard time connecting with people, out of fear that I’ll get heartbroken. I also feel 90% of the time as a burden. It’s not something I can really control, it’s just there. I have set walls around me, and I am faking what I’m really feeling most of the time. For years I haven’t really attached to anyone, but my years lasting friends that make me feel safe and comfortable. And also, I am highly uncomfortable around men.
So this boy getting to know me that much was a really big milestone for me. I can’t explain with words what a shock was to finally open up to someone after so long, to be that comfortable and it was a male person. One thing though, we never actually went out. We were hanging in school, and in the summer we were just online.
So, the year has gone by and we were great as never. I got to know him a little more. Still he wasn’t really the type of person to talk about what he did that day, details about his everyday life, I barely knew his problems, but I had a feeling I knew him.
Over the summer I got close to another classmate (F18). So at the beginning of the new school year he’s 18, she’s 18 and I’m soon to be 19. I started connecting those two friendships. I’ll call her Sasha and I’ll call him Jason. Sasha, Jason and I started hanging out in school, on breaks (we were now allowed to go out of the school building for breaks). They were a little uncomfortable with each other as they didn’t know one another well. Sasha was privately amazing with me, talkative, and interesting. She was the kind of girl friend I needed. Jason was also amazing privately, talkative, humorous, just as always. One day as we were playing some question games I learned that I was the person who knew the most stuff about Jason, and I was in his top 5 favorite people. You couldn’t imagine how I felt. Also to note, he knew my love language is words of affirmation and he used that knowledge well.
For my 19th birthday he wrote me a beautiful birthday message, I won’t post it all, but one line was: “You were just existing and it was enough.” I was literally sobbing and shaking in my room after reading that message. On multiple occasions he told Sasha and me that he doesn’t know what would’ve been with him if I never decided to speak with him when I did. He was also saying that I changed him for the better, that he was thankful and so on. It made me so proud I never gave up on him and now had this beautiful friendship. I was literally writing notes in my phone of his most memorable sayings so I never forget them (serious and funny ones).
With time Sasha and Jason started talking more with me present, but still had troubles when going back home (as they live on the same side of town, and I’m on the other one). But, few of my school absences, few of those rides home, they began talking, having topics etc. Sasha began asking me if I liked him, and telling me he definitely did like me, but as I generally have troubles in differentiating platonic from romantic love, I always claimed I loved him platonically. She would sometimes hint to pay attention when we’re with him, but to be honest it made me a little uncomfortable since I really valued our friendship and didn’t want to potentially ruin it, as I am a terrible lover, but great friend.
Now, I know we all choose what stuff we will tell to whom. We don’t tell everything to the same person. But I noticed that some banal stuff was hidden from me, hence the convo in math class:
Sasha (to Jason): When did you get back from the cinema?
Jason (in shock): Noo why did you tell her?
Me (I was about to say something but just shut up instantly after that)
Sasha: What do you mean?
Jason: I told you not to tell herrr
Sasha (laughing): Why would you say that out loud, it could’ve looked like you forgot to mention it
When I tell you, I cannot even describe the emotions that went through my body. I was on the verge of tears. And from that day it just went downhill. We had this healthy bickering/roasting friendship where we mutually all called out each other, but in the upcoming days it seemed as if ALL the jokes were targeted towards me. I cannot translate them word for word, but they all were in conclusion that I’m worthless, that I should go home, etc. And worst of it all was when he made a joke about something about me that he shouldn’t, and I wouldn’t expect he’d do that to me ever. I was literally crying at that point and they just laughed. I really wanted to go home that day, and when I did, I didn't speak to either one for the rest of the day. But as I mentioned, I was faking my feelings and bottling up my troubles, and tomorrow I tried acting like nothing ever happened. It didn’t exactly work out since for the first time I had to act okay in front of someone who meant so much to me, and knew so much about me. They knew something was off and I was getting on their nerves because I was silent.
I forgot to mention that since Sasha and Jason started talking more in those rides, Jason and mine conversations reduced to minimum and then nothing. I cannot explain how much I miss our talks, jokes. How much I miss interacting with him, and how much is this hurting me.
After a few days of my tragedies and finally starting to pick myself up, Sasha told me she thinks she might have a crush on Jason. Boom. All the subtle flirting I saw between them now had confirmation I wasn’t tripping.
I need to also add that I really, really longed and wanted them to start talking to each other, but never thought that them talking would ruin my relationship with Jason to this point. In one of the recent question games I learned that for him Sasha was easier to talk to and that she understood people more. Yes, he explicitly said this with those exact words. There were so many situations in the past two months that got me to tears, I cannot mention them all, this is already long enough. I also noticed they were chatting 24/7 and that he was sending her photos and videos (which happened only 4 times in almost two years of our friendship). He was always telling her about his everyday things, his other friends etc. That was probably my last cue that “us” doesn’t exist anymore.
So now, the situation is. Sasha is turning 19 soon, and Jason and I are 19. The school year has ended, all we have left is prom night. There has been some tension between me and Sasha lately.
I did have conversations with both of them. Actually multiple with Sasha, and one with Jason. Sasha said that her trust in me is a little broken because I was hiding all of my emotions, but we could maybe work it out.
As for Jason, that conversation absolutely broke me. Again, I cannot mention everything that was said, but one of the things he said was that he never felt that he was nowhere near important to me as I was to him. At first, I thought that was on me for not showing my love more. But as much as my capabilities with all my fears go, I did try my best. He knew about my problems, and was always the one to most understand my mental health. He also said he thinks we will never be the way we were, he doesn’t want to lose contact completely, but that’s it.
But neither one of them wanted to tell me if I was the issue. Neither one wanted to tell me if I messed up, and if yes, how? Somehow it turned out as if I am the one at fault here. I apologized to both, but didn’t get my deserved apology.
On one hand I try to find it positive and great that he’s found someone he’s comfortable enough with to talk about all the stuff, on the other hand I am utterly destroyed. I lost a bunch of weight, I was constantly crying for days, I have a gag reflex when food is mentioned, I am spiraling down in my depression, and my therapist appointment is still two weeks away.
My mother assumes that Sasha started up some talks about me in the sense that I didn’t care about him, maybe even unintentionally. I don’t know what to think about it, and honestly I don’t. I want prom to be over and to heal.
I still miss our talks. The fact that we won’t end watching the show we did on discord also broke me, it was something ours, something special. We will never finish playing that mobile game. I still have urges to text him about things that happened to me, I have other friends of course, but I valued him more than everyone, and that backfired. We became strangers within one month and I cannot wrap my head around that fact.
What am I supposed to do here… What should I do… I really try to feel happy for them, but am simultaneously losing two really important friendships at the same time. My fear of getting attached again grew even bigger and stronger, I don’t know when I will feel comfortable with someone again. My thoughts are wrapped around him, I even stopped listening to my favorite artists in order to not associate songs with this pain in the future. I don’t know what to do anymore, and I am so desperate.
Missing him has become my habit, my routine. For his birthday I wrote him a letter in which I wrote something along the lines “If only we fought so I could hate you. But I cannot hate you, I am unable to hate you.” And really it is the way it is, I cannot hate him. He was more than a friend, less than a lover. I also cannot forget him that easily, he was something really big and important in my life, and… I hope that in another universe I am not grieving our friendship or whatever we had.

She wanted to go no contact out of the gate,
"If we keep talking, I'm worried I'll want to get back together with you."
And a few other lines stuck with me, including:
"You were the perfect boyfriend." "I want to live with you so bad."
And even ending off the call with two, "I love yous" with tear filled eyes. At the end I asked her not to forget about me, and then that was the last time I heard her voice for 2 years.
I will embarrassingly admit I did text her, and even write a letter very early on in the breakup. But after about a week or two from that April 7th date, I respected her wishes and didn't reach out any more.
I never blocked her, removed her off of anything. She randomly just removed me about a month after on most platforms.
Jump forward to what would've been our third anniversary, December 8th. She reaches out just to talk and check in. I now know after the most recent events that she was looking for more out of it, but was overwhelmed emotionally and ghosted me again.

Maybe that's largely in part to how I know myself and my feelings for her, but I have no interest in jeopardizing something good for her.
Conversation continued:
"Angela, I'm deeply sorry for any pressure I may have put onto you when I said I could see us getting married one day."
"And I'm sorry I didn't fight more to keep us going."
At this point she initially denied crying, but back tracked and owned up to sobbing.
There is so much more that was said, and I can type it out if you guys want.
Our call ended after four hours and some change, with: Me: "Do realize Angela, that this is likely the last time we'll talk for a while. I've really enjoyed this though, and hearing your voice has been a trip. I hope we'll get to talk again soon. I wish we could just keep talking."

So I've gotten myself into a situation where I have both an AirVPN and Mullvad subscription and I thought to myself, why not get the best out of both worlds: the battle-tested privacy of Mullvad along with the features of AirVPN (port-forwarding)
Specifically I've made it so that by default I connect to the internet via Mullvad. However I can set specific applications to use AirVPN. Additionally the connection to AirVPN goes trough Mullvad meaning that AirVPN never gets to see my real IP.
This method should work for all wireguard based VPNs, but I'll use Mullvad and AirVPN here. And like the title says this is Linux specific.
To do that here's a script:
Run the script as root. If it didn't produce any warnings/errors you are good.
Now you can access the network namespace. Do that by running ip netns exec air-ns bash as root. This should open a shell.
Verify that you are connected to Mullvad inside the shell. Run curl icanhazip.com. It should return the IP of your Mullvad connection.
As a sanity check, run ip route. You should see something like
Now try pinging 8.8.8.8. It should work. Next try pinging google.com. If it fails then most likely the DNS-server you are using is a local mullvad one. To verify this run cat /etc/resolv.conf. If it contains a local IP then this is the case.
To solve this you can either bypass AirVPN for this address (using ip rule) or you can simply go to Mullvad settings and select your favorite public DNS.
With that out of the way now if you run curl icanhazip.com it should return an AirVPN IP.
To launch an application inside AirVPN you can use
sudo ip netns exec air-ns sudo -u yourUsername command
You should have a working "kill switch". You can verify this by running ip rule, either inside or outside of the namespace. There should be a line like 32765: not from all fwmark XXXXX lookup YYYYY. But of course it never hurts to bind your torrent client to an interface.
Also if you want to route all traffic trough AirVPN you might get away with a single wireguard configuration file, though I've not tested this.

First make sure you are connected to Mullvad. Theoretically it shouldn't matter too much what kind of connection you are using, though I haven't tested this.2
Next download the wireguard config files from AirVPN. Open the files in a text editor and set the MTU value to (at least) 60 below the MTU value of the Mullvad connection. You can set the MTU value of Mullvad in the GUI. Then move the files to /etc/wireguard/3
Now we create a network namespace. A network namespace is basically a network configuration that is completely independent from your main networking. Essentially it's a separate network. To connect the networks we add a virtual Ethernet cable between the two and configure the main network to act like a router.To do that here's a script:

Not sure if this has been addressed, but the text size and spacing of the chat bubbles on Android is horrible. I love the app and this is really the only thing that's a big QOL issue. When typing, the keyboard takes up 1/3 or 1/4 of the screen on an average phone. With the keyboard up you can only see your last message and perhaps one line from SL. Is is there anything coming down the pipe to modify the text size or the chat bubble size? I basically have to go to Private Mode to see more than 1 message while typing.

2023.06.02 18:47 _Mini_Hulk_ I cut all ties with a suicidal "friend" after discovering what he's been lying about for the entirety of our friendship?
This happened roughly 2 years ago but still gives me nightmares.
TW: suicide, mental health
Background info relevant dor the story:
I am an Arab and expat living in Europe and studying medicine. I speak and write Arabic fluently. At the time of this story, I was still in the beginning of my medical carreer. I have Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, an Anxiety Disorder and had multiple suicidal periods, but I am getting medicated for it.
Now the story:
I (23 - now 25 F - ) and a group of friends once went to a bar. As we started socialising, we met a person who we will call James (fake name for the sake of privacy). James (19M) says he is from Scottland and despite his mother being Egyptian, does not speak a word of Arabic. Little by little, James becomes a part of our friends group.
Fast forward a few months later, October 1st, it's James birthday. We decide to all go hang out at the local park and have a few drinks. On the way to the park, we stop at a small shop to get our drinks. I notice James taking some sort of pills and, being the curious medstudent that I am, could not help asking what they were for, if he didn't mind sharing. He says that it's some sort of pre-chemotherapy treatment he has to take. I was shocked cz I wasn't expecting that, I thought it would be something way less serious. I apologised for asking because I felt like I breached his privacy but he assured me it was okay and it's not like he "could've hid it from us since he only has a few months to live anyway" (he said he had until april to live). During his birthday party, we were all pretty perplexed because this meant that this could be his last birthday party... We would all take turns in excusing ourselves to get ourselves together and "be strong" for him. He was the one needing support, not us. At some point, James comes to me and asks me to go talk somewhere away from the others. He tells me he feels like he is about to have a seizure. Without hesitating, I ask him to lay on the floor so that he doesn't fall and hurt himself and I ask him if there is something particular I should do to make sure he is safe. He told me to time the seizure and try to limit his movement if it becomes intense. Also, he asked me not to call an ambulance. I didn't question him at the time for why he didn't want it, I just assumed he simply didn't need more medical attention and I could tell when it would be really necessary. The seizure happened, I took care of him and it went okay, in the sense that it didn't last too long. Also, it was my first time witnessing a seizure but I thought I handled it well.
A few months later, James tells us that he is having medical exams done to see the progression of his chemotherapy treatment. When the results came in, he tells us that they are not looking good and he might even have less time than we tought. To preserve his privacy and knowing how difficult it is to deal with such a thing, I obviously did not ask to look at the test results. I have, however, prior to this, asked if he wanted me to accompany him to chemotherapy sessions because he lives away from his family and thought he could use the support and he doesn't have to face it all alone. He politely declined and I never asked again because I didn't want to be so insistant on something so private. But i digress. Test results. After hearing the news, I rush to his place with a friend of ours and we bring some food and decide to cook all together so that he doesn't feel alone in this tough moment and to change the mood. It went as well as it could go considering what was going on.
Here's where things start getting strange...
Some time passes and a friend of ours tells us that James said he had slept with Maya (who is my best friend and I would know if something had happened between them). When Maya hears this, she is very weirded out as this is not at all true. That day, there was a party at James' place that his roomates were throwing and had invited me and Maya. Being weirded out by what James said, we decided to still show up to the party but limit our interactions with him until we're in the right head space to do so. It wasn't that hard actually as he decided not to come out of his room. I eventually get worried about him because that is unlike him, so I go to his room to see what's going on. He sits me down and tells me about his plans to off himself, shows me the kitchen knife he had and a couple red marks on his neck. My mind goes blank our of fear because I too was suicidal at some point and that just gave me flashbacks. I tell him exactly what I wish someone told me in moments like this, I take away the knife and I sit by him and ask him to fight this at least a little longer and to sleep it off for now and that I will be back the next day after I get my covid vaccine shot that was booked for me by my university and i could not move.
So it's the next day and I'm in line waiting to get vaccinated. I had recognised that yesterday was a cry for help otherwise he wouldn't have talked about it or even allowed me in. So I started thinking of ways to help him. I also needed to get my mind to calm down a little so I opened Instagram and to my surprise, he had posted stories. It was a sequence of photos of him with friends and after the sequence of photos, a quote. The quote insinuated that this is goodbye. I freaked out and called him immediately. He didn't answer to my million calls so I texted and he answered. He said he is not feeling well and that he has had enough and basically all the things that someone would be saying when they are on the verge of unaliving themselves. I got terrified and texted his roomates about the situation and asked them to spend time with him or to check on him just to make sure he will be okay before I arrive. While his roomates are taking care of him, I call my psychologist and update her on what's going on and I ask her for advice. She tells me to inform the "police" or "equivalent of 911" so that they can send help his way. I make the call, give out his information, name, surname, date of birth, country of origin, and address. The "police" shows up at his place and his roomates tell me that he was very angry when he knew I sent them to take care of him. I, then recieve a call from the "policeman" who was with him, he puts me on speaker and asks me to confirm to him and James that I did in fact send them and to confirm the data I gave them about James (name surname...). I found it odd but thought nothing of it. They ended up taking him to the ER for an emergency appointment with the psychiatrist and a possibility to be recovered.
I was relieved. Finally, he was getting the help he needs.
Then I get a call from the hospital, that I missed because I was still getting vaccinated. When I finish, I call immediately and they inform me that if I received a call, it means that it's about an in-patient so they asked the name and I gave it only to hear back "I'm sorry but we have no records of someone under that name". That was super strange but okay? Then James calls me and it was the doctor on the phone telling me that they are dismissing him but they are putting him on antidepressants and anxiolitics. I wasn't all that happy with this because theg should have admitted him if he is a harm to himself or others and in that case he could be a harm to himself. But I went with it.
I picked him up and on the way home, I glance at his phone as he was texting someone. It was in arabic. I was surprised as he told me when we first met that he doesn't speak the language, let alone write it. So I tell him that I saw that, he then comes up with a half assed excuse that he knows a few letters of the arabic alphabet and can only write his name. I obviously don't buy it but decide not to dig too deep into this.
Something wasn't clicking anymore... He lied about sleeping with Maya, he lied about not speaking Arabic (and for what?) and the hospital didn't have his name on record? Something wasn't right. I deduced that the hospital didn't have his name on record because he lied about his name to me. Why would anyone lie about their name? Maybe to hide an identity? Or to move on from a terrible past and start over? I got scared. So i dropped him off at home and went to my own place.
I bawled my eyes out and I decided to tell Maya everything. We both got creeped out and I decided, after consulting my psychologist and psychiatrist, that it would be most beneficial for my own mental health to protect myself and so I blocked him on all platforms... I forgot telegram though so when he noticed, he begged me to explain to him why so I did and i told him I think he lied about his identity to which he said the classic "I can explain". I didn't want to hear anything anymore because I didn't feel safe to see him or talk to him even. I cut him off...
From that day on, I was terrified of leaving my house because he knew where I live and I didn't know what to expect anymore from someone who hid his identity from me and others. I was scared.
A year later, a friend of mine saw him on the streets. So he is very much alive and not dead by april. So he lied about the cancer too? I'm not so sure... I don't know...
I still feel like crap though for having "abandoned" a person who is in clear need of help... I just felt like I needed to protect myself...

After hearing the news, I rush to his place with a friend of ours and we bring some food and decide to cook all together so that he doesn't feel alone in this tough moment and to change the mood. It went as well as it could go considering what was going on.
Here's where things start getting strange...
Some time passes and a friend of ours tells us that James said he had slept with Maya (who is my best friend and I would know if something had happened between them). When Maya hears this, she is very weirded out as this is not at all true. That day, there was a party at James' place that his roomates were throwing and had invited me and Maya. Being weirded out by what James said, we decided to still show up to the party but limit our interactions with him until we're in the right head space to do so. It wasn't that hard actually as he decided not to come out of his room. I eventually get worried about him because that is unlike him, so I go to his room to see what's going on. He sits me down and tells me about his plans to off himself, shows me the kitchen knife he had and a couple red marks on his neck. My mind goes blank our of fear because I too was suicidal at some point and that just gave me flashbacks. I tell him exactly what I wish someone told me in moments like this, I take away the knife and I sit by him and ask him to fight this at least a little longer and to sleep it off for now and that I will be back the next day after I get my covid vaccine shot that was booked for me by my university and i could not move.
So it's the next day and I'm in line waiting to get vaccinated. I had recognised that yesterday was a cry for help otherwise he wouldn't have talked about it or even allowed me in. So I started thinking of ways to help him. I also needed to get my mind to calm down a little so I opened Instagram and to my surprise, he had posted stories. It was a sequence of photos of him with friends and after the sequence of photos, a quote. The quote insinuated that this is goodbye. I freaked out and called him immediately. He didn't answer to my million calls so I texted and he answered. He said he is not feeling well and that he has had enough and basically all the things that someone would be saying when they are on the verge of unaliving themselves. I got terrified and texted his roomates about the situation and asked them to spend time with him or to check on him just to make sure he will be okay before I arrive. While his roomates are taking care of him, I call my psychologist and update her on what's going on and I ask her for advice. She tells me to inform the "police" or "equivalent of 911" so that they can send help his way. I make the call, give out his information, name, surname, date of birth, country of origin, and address. The "police" shows up at his place and his roomates tell me that he was very angry when he knew I sent them to take care of him. I, then recieve a call from the "policeman" who was with him, he puts me on speaker and asks me to confirm to him and James that I did in fact send them and to confirm the data I gave them about James (name surname...). I found it odd but thought nothing of it. They ended up taking him to the ER for an emergency appointment with the psychiatrist and a possibility to be recovered.
I was relieved. Finally, he was getting the help he needs.
Then I get a call from the hospital, that I missed because I was still getting vaccinated. When I finish, I call immediately and they inform me that if I received a call, it means that it's about an in-patient so they asked the name and I gave it only to hear back "I'm sorry but we have no records of someone under that name". That was super strange but okay? Then James calls me and it was the doctor on the phone telling me that they are dismissing him but they are putting him on antidepressants and anxiolitics. I wasn't all that happy with this because theg should have admitted him if he is a harm to himself or others and in that case he could be a harm to himself. But I went with it.
I picked him up and on the way home, I glance at his phone as he was texting someone. It was in arabic. I was surprised as he told me when we first met that he doesn't speak the language, let alone write it. So I tell him that I saw that, he then comes up with a half assed excuse that he knows a few letters of the arabic alphabet and can only write his name. I obviously don't buy it but decide not to dig too deep into this.
Something wasn't clicking anymore... He lied about sleeping with Maya, he lied about not speaking Arabic (and for what?) and the hospital didn't have his name on record? Something wasn't right. I deduced that the hospital didn't have his name on record because he lied about his name to me. Why would anyone lie about their name? Maybe to hide an identity? Or to move on from a terrible past and start over? I got scared. So i dropped him off at home and went to my own place.
I bawled my eyes out and I decided to tell Maya everything. We both got creeped out and I decided, after consulting my psychologist and psychiatrist, that it would be most beneficial for my own mental health to protect myself and so I blocked him on all platforms... I forgot telegram though so when he noticed, he begged me to explain to him why so I did and i told him I think he lied about his identity to which he said the classic "I can explain". I didn't want to hear anything anymore because I didn't feel safe to see him or talk to him even. I cut him off...
From that day on, I was terrified of leaving my house because he knew where I live and I didn't know what to expect anymore from someone who hid his identity from me and others. I was scared.
A year later, a friend of mine saw him on the streets. So he is very much alive and not dead by april. So he lied about the cancer too? I'm not so sure... I don't know...
I still feel like crap though for having "abandoned" a person who is in clear need of help... I just felt like I needed to protect myself...

Netflix will ask anyone using an account on a streaming device that isn’t associated with the account owner’s household to enter a four-digit verification code that will be sent to the primary email address or phone number associated with the account. Netflix will also ask devices to “check in” periodically in the home location around once a month. If Netflix detects that someone outside of the household is sharing the password, it will block the device and give them the option to add their own account. Under Netflix’s password-sharing rules it’s fine for multiple people to use and share one account, provided they all live together. So if you’re a family or a friendship group that lives together in the same home you’re golden; you can keep sharing your account as one Household. However, if you’re part of a group that’s sharing a Netflix account and you don’t all live together then you’re no longer going to be allowed to do this. Well, not for free. Some background:
*30's, single, doesn't currently travel much (maybe 1-2x per year, domestically), but wants to travel more. My goal is to travel at least 2x per year, both domestically and internationally. *I live near BWI, so that will be my main depature airport. *I am open to the higher AF cards, as long as the fee is easily recouped (I already have TSA PreCheck through my employer, but I'd be interested in Global Entry). *I may be purchasing tour packages through tour companies for my international travel, if that makes a difference in what a company consideres a form of travel for points accural. That would let it offer Prime members wireless plans for $10 a month or possibly for free and bolster loyalty among its biggest spending customers, the people said, who requested anonymity to discuss a private matter.
The talks have been going on for six to eight weeks and have also included AT&T Inc. at times, but the plan may take several more months to launch and could be scrapped, one person said. Dish shares jumped 14% Friday in New York since a deal with the retail giant could help the struggling satellite-TV company as it transitions to become a national wireless carrier. Meanwhile, T-Mobile fell 8.4%, AT&T dropped 5% and Verizon slid 3.5.%. The big three national carriers could see their own subscribers flee to a cheaper option at Amazon.
