2023.06.02 16:27 Critteranne666 AITA for Ejecting a Girl into Outer Space?

I am Barton, a pilot of an Emergency Dispatch Ship (everyone calls them an EDS). My job is to pilot tiny EDS vessels from our main ship (the Stardust) to the frontier planets in emergencies. Usually, serums that can cure dreadful diseases.

The ships are small and compact, and they use rocket fuel. The trouble is that all the margins are very very tight. We calculate for everything -- from the weight of the pilot to the weight of the serum.

So if somebody sneaks on board, their weight will change everything. Once the ship gets to the planet, the ship will crash, and the serum will be destroyed -- so the people who need the medicine will die.

That's why, if a stowaway sneaks on board, the law says I must eject them into outer space.

But this time, it turned out to be a girl. Marilyn (18F). In white sandals. She didn't know about the law, and she was so upset. She snuck onboard so she could visit her brother on the planet I was headed to.

I contacted the Stardust, but they said there was nothing I could do. I had to jettison her into outer space. There was nothing I could do. Even though she weighed just 110 pounds.

I'm not a total jerk. I let her write letters to her parents. I even radioed her brother on the planet's surface so she could talk to him for a few minutes. And say goodbye. But he knew the law, too.

Then, she went into the airlock and said "I'm ready." It's not like I forced her or anything.

So I shut her in the airlock. Where it was pitch black. And I pushed the red lever that ejected her into outer space.

I felt something bump against my ship, and I knew it had to be her body, and I try not to think about it.

And I still feel really bad about it. But it's the frontier. Bad things happen.

The regulations say I am not the asshole. Even her brother understood. But I'm feeling torn about this.

After it happened, some other pilots told me I should have tried something else first. Like removing the seat and the closet door and ejecting them to compensate for her added weight. Some lady pilot suggested we could cut off our legs and eject them to make up the difference!

So am I the asshole for ejecting Marilyn into outer space?

2023.06.02 16:14 Nido64 If Vermintide 3 ever happens part 2

If Vermintide 3 ever happens part 2
Since people really liked the last post (https://www.reddit.com/Vermintide/comments/13x7qbg/if_vermintide_3_ever_happens/) I decided to let my mind go to places it shouldn't have and wrote down some more ideas.
Chaos Gods: Including every single creature in the chaos god roster would be a monumental and unrealistic task so I decided to go with something more achievable. Take a base enemy that already exists like, the Mauler
Don't notice that my man's levitating.
And add variations. Here are some ideas: Khorne: Better in melee, maybe hit harder, faster, bigger weapon, armored etc, but become very easy to kill if riposted. They can be very dangerous if left unchecked or if they get a backstab but precise timing of your mechanics should let them take massive damage, maybe with some audio or visual feedback to notify the player "hey stab him and he will die." Visually, they should look red and have a nice khorne helmet maybe.
\"if this guy parries me again I will kill myself.\"
Nurgle: More health and if damaged they cause nurgle rot damage around them like when breaking buboes. Should be highly resistant to flames if Sienna is to be believed, but not to explosions and bludgeoning weapons like hammers or cannonballs. Visually green with pustules and shit all over them.
\"Father why am I so low res\"
Slaaneesh: Extra tentacles/limbs make these ones immune to pushing and reposting but weapons that can slash fast like Viktor's rapier or Kerrilians sword/dagger would cut those limbs easily and stagger them. Visually red/pink with slooty armor maybe.
\"Sign up to serve slaanesh they said.\"
Tzeench: Being around one of these completely blocks your ability cooldown, but killing one drops an orb that gives you a little bit of cooldown back. Visually blue/pink with scintillating colors.
\"we do a little trolling\"

Next up: Vampires.
In my personal opinion, while I love vampires, I don't think they should be a full enemy type. Here's a concept that I think would work however.
\"Make fun of my baldness again, see what happens.

Taking inspiration with how vampiric corruption works in the CA games, before you start a mission you would see a modifier in it that would say "vampiric corruption present in the area."
In the mission, you could have a side objective of "Eliminate the vampiric corruption". An area of the map would have a different hue and it would spawn a minor vampire lord with their skeleton army that are infesting the area. Killing the lord would cause the rest of their creatures to crumble and fall.
Specifics:
Trash mobs: Skeleton warriors, Zombies, Dire Wolves. They speak for themselves. They are plentiful and easily destroyed and there can be variations of them with different weapons but they should fall plenty fine with just a swing of a greathammer.
\"Nyaaaaaaaaaaaaa!\"
Elites: Grave guard. Undead warriors with swords and shields, would be funny if they could riposte the player a small amount or push them back, they are generally harder to kill but vulnerable to backstabs.
\"Your flesh privilege has been rescinded.\"
Specials: The Leech sorcerer already exists but I would also like to propose an undead knight on horse type enemy that charges very fast through the battlefield and has to be tripped or something, I think it would be funny. Vargulls, Crypt horros, Mourngulls also qualify as candidates but at this point this would be a full enemy type added to the game, so they should probably only add one of these. The easiest and most logical answer would be Vargulls as they already behave somewhat like rat ogres.
\"Fear me for I am tiny.\"
Monsters: The minor vampire lords should definitely be their own enemy with a healthbar where if they die everyone else in their side takes massive damage and withers, leading to "Vampiric corruption cleansed" for the objective. While alive, they would cast spells that drain health, revive their fallen skeletons, try to immobilize the players to bite them etc.
If they ever decide to do a full vampire focused level, then the main antagonist could be a Lord riding a zombie dragon. Generally, flying enemies are currently non-existent in vermintide so it would be a new thing to program and mess with.

When you hear there's going to be 'umie meat at the function tonight
Up next: Orks with more detail.
If orks are ever to be added they need to be added as a full enemy type. As fellow orkhead ExtraLongArseCrack pointed out (great name btw, Gork and Mork approve) they should be hostile towards everyone. Going through a level and hearing a massive WAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH in the background should be terrifying and it would add a new layer to the fight as the players can use the green horde to buffer some of the other hordes and let them kill each other.
Specifics: Trash mobs: Goblins, Night goblins, Squigs. They swarm and charge in trying to overwhelm the enemy in numbers. Night goblins might carry shields but they are tiny and fragile, especially to heavy attacks. Squigs are very fast and mobile but also generally fragile.
\"This is not worth the teef they are paying me.\"
Elites: The regular orc boy should be in this category. If they are wearing armor, then that armor should be breakable as they assemble it from scrap and orcish engineering is....... a thing. One or two hits should be able to break that armor or shield and after that, it's free real estate. Savage Orcs could exist as a lesser Elite where they still have plenty of health but no armor and could show up in slightly bigger numbers. Goblin fanatics would look out specifically to flank players and get backstabs in but they are very obvious about it.
\"Woah\" Orcwen Wilson
Specials: Spellcaster of Gork would summon a massive circular target on the ground where the players would have to quickly run away from and after a while, the massive foot of Gork would slam down, dealing damage and pushback. Spellcaster of Mork would summon a massive line on the ground that would target one specific player and at one point it would stop and launch the Fist of Mork towards him, that can be dodged with a timely dash and can damage any other player on the way. They both need to be quickly discovered and killed, similarly to a storm sorcerer. Fanatics could also be placed in this category as stealth type enemies that disappear but you can see their footsteps on the ground as they walk (this is already a thing in Winds of Magic levels with concealed enemies).
\"Gork, should I invest in this new thing called cryptoteef?\"
Monsters: Black orcs. They deserve nothing else. These guys are powerhouses of muscle and stupidity and need to be taken seriously. Also, Giants. that one is pretty self explanatory. Arachnarok spiders would also be fun, especially if they could walk on the ceiling.
\"No joke 'ere 'umie. Youse losing this run.\"

Thanks for reading.

2023.06.02 16:02 Diligent_Pen_281 A poetic prophesy

If you recognize this poem, don’t read past it.
Down in The Land, in the bay of the Thunder, A tribe from the depths, their peace torn asunder. An old man of heaven, who yet casts the line, Found deep ‘neath the waves, a tree smothered in brine.
Enter in through, with the key from The Mask, The doorman lies leery, sealed tight in the cask. Breathing is hard, where water’s a grave, Yet gifts from the past, from gasping can save.
Once underground, with the sun bright on both sides, Find you The Widow, with tears in her eyes. Give then my word, which I spoke long ago, She’ll send you away, to the land of the snow.
A man of metal and stone, whose heart melts as glass, Has given the way, by breathing his last. Through the shadows and smoke, from the man of them both, Fight your way through, but beware ye the growth.
The puzzle is easy, when know you the key, The key is my friend, the one you set free. In vaulted cathedral with roof deep below, The sovereigns lie buried, with eyes yet aglow.
Turn, turn, Turner again, One for the sinner, two for the sin. If you have heeded, and gaze cast is straight, Follow his vision to find you the gate.
A Coils, a Kiss had no will of their own, But cast free from the shackles, they fled with dark, evil stone. Now these stones that they carry, like deep seated mistrust, Are now themselves keys to halls coated in dust.
Touch not a goblet, sit not on the throne, Or wake you the ire of beast naught but bone. Yet wake him you must, for beneath is the way, Enter with haste, if you wish see the day.
A path made of gold, swathed all in linen, Fled down at great speed, by gnashing teeth driven. Traverse it yet careful, or find it your last, But when dawn has come, the trouble has passed.
Fear ye The Father, the Herald of Swarms, For guards he the way, with The Brother of Storms. Separate from me, you must defeat or persuade, Or so ends it here, your righteous crusade.
There ‘round the light, your prize binds them true, Yet releasing them now, you cannot undo. The risk, the reward, the chaos set free, The God to combine, the final decree. ————————————————————
I am running a high level (19, will go into epic boons), high fantasy (flying islands and all) campaign for a high number of players(seven). This poem is part prophecy, part road map to aid the heroes in putting back together the shattered pieces of god. It’s a big deal.
Now I do know what most of this means already but I was looking for ideas on what the other bits could be alluding to. Here’s what I have nailed down: * “The bay of the Thunder” refers to a location called Thunderbay Ocean. * “The key from The Mask” is a pendant that a PC carries, it was his father’s, his father was “The Mask. * “Gifts from the past” I intend that whichever item they pull out that I forgot an npc had given them can suddenly help keep from drowning in some way, if it’s entertaining and makes sense. * The entire stanza about the sun on both sides, The Widow, the word, and the snow I have nailed down. * The next stanza is wholly referring to NPCs, the “man of metal and stone” is a warforged general, who will sacrifice himself if he is rehabilitated, or else must be killed. The “man of shadows and smoke” is the Fey Lord of smoke, mist, and shadows, and “the growth” is a remnant from an ancient arch Druid sloth-guy. Ideas about how these last two could have left “barriers” and such would be cool. * The Warforged name is Glaive, in order to get through a door they must insert a Glaive into a slot and turn it. In a long forgotten cathedral, the ancients have been awoken and reanimated, I don’t know who these ancients were, but I know the villain who brought them back. * Next stanza refers to a statue of someone named Turner needing to be rotated. Your guess is as good as mine. * “Coils” refers to a PC (his title was The Constrictor’s Coils) and “Kiss” refers to an NPC (her title was The Kiss of the Cobra King). They then fled their society and have pieces of the body of Merrshaulk, the former god of the yuan-ti who was turned into a massive dark statue that encircled the earth. The statue has broken (because in my world the earth has shattered due to a mad geomancer, causing tectonic plates to rise, creating floating islands and continents) the yuan-ti seek to reconstruct the statue of Merrshaulk to free him from his stone prison. These shards are somehow a key I guess. * Whenever they get through, they need to be careful not to wake something I’m thinking undead tarrasque. But it slumbers on top of the way out so they must wake it. * They flew down a massive ornate tunnel chased by the undead something and other undead from earlier in the dungeon. There are tons of traps, it will be difficult. But at dawn they escape. * The last two paragraphs I kinda got, “The Father” is a PC’s lost dad, diametrically opposed to the players, same as “The Brother” the PC’s brother. They need to get past them to access the final piece. * The final piece is a piece of the shattered god, a chain that binds all the true forms of dragons. Since the event I call “The Great Cataclysm” there have been no dragons, but we know that’s because they have been bound to their humanoid forms. Removing this chain will grant them an immensely powerful piece of god ti use to fix him, but will also allow the dragons to access their true forms once again. There are some twists here, the mounts of The Harbingers of the Apocalypse are dragons. This will release them. And they can choose to release only metallics or chromatics, if they want, but a PC is a chromatic so they know they aren’t all evil…. Either way if they take the chain the Mounts are released.
Okay ideas, feedback, and clarifying questions would be so appreciated!!

2023.06.02 15:59 Valha28 EWW: The Lesson

Hello and welcome to episode 64 in a series inspired by u/kamikazeb0y and CinemaSins, where I'll be sinning each and every episode of Gumball.
Quick Disclaimer: I know this is just a children's cartoon and isn't meant to be taken seriously. This, like the show itself, is not at all meant to be taken seriously or considered an actual critique of the show. It is all in good fun.
With that out of the way I present you, Everything Wrong With: The Lesson!

The episode begins with Gumball and Darwin reading math books, attempting to study for an upcoming math test. Honestly, I'm surprised Gumball is studying in the first place. I mean I could see Darwin doing so but Gumball? Studying seems like such an un-Gumball thing for him to do. +1
Gumball: Noooooo! Activates "bomb" Gumball and Darwin: It's gonna explooooooode! Explosion sound Snaps out of it Gumball: Oh, come on. Concentrate a little, man. We'll never be ready for the math test. Darwin sighs, and they go back to reading Gumball: Strange voice while reading] If zhe square of zhe hypotenuse equals zhe sum of zhe square of the other two sides, vhat is the length of side A Darwin: Strange voice while acting like Igor I know not, master. Gumball: Throws down book You failed me for the last time. "Zaps" Darwin, who starts yelling. Then snaps out of it once again Oh, come on, we're supposed to be studying. Both start reading again, but then Gumball starts playing music with his ruler, and Darwin starts slamming his book in harmony until Gumball interferes again Gumball: Dude, stop distracting me! Reads book again Alright, let's get some work done. After the first time Gumball called Darwin out for distracting them, despite it being Gumball doing so, I'm surprised Darwin didn't just get up and move somewhere else to study or ignore Gumball's antics, rather than continuing to go along with them and then get continuously blamed for distracting them over and over. +1
Darwin: Unless.... Gumball: What? Darwin: We could Whistles Gumball: What? Darwin: You know, we could Makes a noise with his tongue Gumball: Shrugs Darwin: You know, we could Darwin makes more noises Gumball: Gasps What?! You mean— Firstly, how did Gumball realize Darwin meant cheating by all those random various sounds? +1
Secondly, it's surprising to see Darwin be the one to suggest something like this for once. Usually he's the morally high one and would be completely against doing something like this. +1
Nigel Brown: Cheating?! Did you really think you could get away with this?! Turns to Gumball and Darwin, with writings including math solutions all over Darwin's body Gumball: To be honest, yeah. I thought we could. I have no idea what went wrong. They expected this to not be noticed by anyone. +1
Nigel Brown: Well, maybe you'll figure it out during spring break which you're spending in detention! An entire weeks worth of detention for cheating on a test? That seems a liiitle harsh. Especially when those detentions are lasting the entire day. +1
Darwin: Ha ha! Especially the cupcake. She looks like she was made out of rotten eggs, and foot fungus. Rotten Cupcake: I'm a boy, dork bag. He says this but in The Potion she's shown to be female and going out with Scythe. Does...this mean Gumball canonically has a trans character?
...Scythe and the Gumball writers say trans rights! Hell yeah! -5
Gumball: Ugh! Even her voice is gross. Wait, hang on. How can she hear our secret thoughts? Gumball continues calling him 'her' despite him stating that he's a boy. +1
Gumball: It's not what it looks like. W-we accidentally slipped, and-and fell. T-t-the door went whoosh, and this went whoosh and we-let me start again. There was an eagle, and it came through the window and tried to steal-uh-I mean...it was totally like this when we got here. He expected them to believe this. +1
Mister Small: Brings out super thick book The first is an epic life story written from the perspective of a shoe. Clears throat Part one of eighty-seven: Birth... dark... factory... noise. The smell of polish... souls fitting soles soullessly, dolefully. Gumball and Darwin cringe in boredom. They bang on the office door's window Gumball: Let us out!!! This is cruel, and unusual!! Oh god, and I thought the week's detention was harsh. This is straight-up evil in comparison! +1
In yet another line, Darwin comes through a metal detector Darwin: I've done a lot of bad things, as freedom went away. I've seen a lot of sad things, and it gets worse everyday Principal Brown somehow doesn't see Darwin's unusually large and bulky foot. +1
Scythe's rakes are taken. He suspects Gumball who has the rake hidden in his head, but Gumball points to the rotten cupcake. Scythe attacks the cupcake instead And Scythe believes Gumball blaming Rotten Cupcake despite it being obvious he has the rake. +1
Gumball: I think we've been here so long we've lost our taste for freedom. But...they've only been here a few hours, which is no more than they would have been there on a normal school day. +1
Rotten Cupcake: No, no, NO! Mowdown brutally attacks him, and pops his cherry. The cherry juice splats on the classroom door's window in front of the boys] Gumball: Looking terrified Did you see what that bear just did to that guy's cherry?PFFFFFFFFFT, okay, i completely forgot about this joke. These subtle adult jokes are great! -1
Gumball considers this. Then it skips to him climbing the noisy ventilation shaft. He talks, but the shaft drowns his voice out. I'm surprised he has the strength to do this considering how weak he's been shown, and is later shown, to be. +1
While Julius makes up insults, Gumball takes Darwin and takes cover out of the compartment while Julius's fuse shortens. Julius notices, but it is too late Julius: You double-crossing ner— Explodes He somehow survives his head literally being blown up. +1
Gumball: Uh, no. Sees approaching van Grabs Darwin's fin Never get caught! They jump off the roof. Principal Brown barges in Nigel Brown: SURRENDER NOW and you'll only— Gasps Nooooo! In slow-motion, Gumball and Darwin fall down. They slowly come nearer the roof of the van. Then no longer in slow-motion, the van speeds off and the boys instead hit the ground. and they somehow survive this. +1
Gumball: See you never! Darwin: See you never, Principal Brown! They celebrate as they walk off. The principal watches them from the rooftop Nigel Brown: I don't know why they're so happy. They still have to come back here tomorrow. Why did they even break out in the first place? Not only do they have to go back the next day like Principal Brown just said, but things are gonna be 100x worse at home than at school when Nicole finds out they not only cheated on their maths tests and got detention for it, but also broke out of said detention and jumped off a roof. +1

2023.06.02 15:34 _SmoothCriminal The ballad of a fallen DPS during progging

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and disgusting websites that I explored,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my basement door,
"'Tis some scrub," I muttered, "tapping at my basement door,
Only this and nothing more."

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak of December;
And my dying gaming chair wrought its ghost upon the floor,
Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow,
From my smartphones surcease of sorrow, sorrow for the lost score,
For the rare and radiant parse whom Yoshi-P wanted more,
Purple parse here, forevermore.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each blackout curtain,
Thrilled me-filled me with fantastic terrors I never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating,
"'Tis some scrub entreating entrance at my basement door,
Some scrub entreating entrance at my basement door;
This it is and nothing more."

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
"Mother," said I, "or Father, truly your nuggies I implore;
But the fact is that I was progging, and you gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my basement door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you." Here I opened wide the door;
Darkness there and nothing more.

Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken and the stillness gave no token,
And the only words spoken was the whispered phrase, “Purple parse score?”
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back, “Parse score!”
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the basement turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
“Surely,” said I, “surely there is something at my windowsill;
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore,
Let my chins be still for a moment and this mystery ignored;
’Tis a scrub and nothing more!”

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flitter and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my basement door,
Perched upon a bust of Sokken just above my basement door,
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
“Though thy DPS be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Fanfest encore,
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Mogstation store!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

Much I marveled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning—little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living, sweaty neckbeard,
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his basement door,
Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his basement door,
With such a name as “Nevermore.”

But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only,
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing farther then he uttered—not a feather then he fluttered,
Till I scarcely more than muttered “Other PFs have flown before,
On the morrow he will leave me, as other PFs have flown before.”
Then the bird said “Nevermore.”

Startled at the stillness broken by a reply so aptly spoken,
“Doubtless,” said I, “what it utters is only spam and nothing more,
Caught from some unhappy master, released to an unmerciful disaster,
Just like the bluebird whom the stars she explored,
Followed fast and followed faster 'till her songs did burden bore,
Of ‘Never—never, more’.”

But the Raven still beguiling all my fancy into smiling,
Straight, I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird, bust and door;
Then, upon the waifu figurines and used stockings, I betook myself to thinking,
As if he embodied the despair from wipes in his very core,
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore,
Meant in croaking “Nevermore.”

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing,
To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core;
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease, reclining
On the pillow's crusty lining that the lamp-light gloated o’er,
But whose crusty-smelly lining with the lamp-light gloating o’er,
He shall press, ah, nevermore!

Then, methought, the air growing denser, perfumed from an unseen censer,
Swung by cat girls whose footfalls tinkled on the tufted floor.
“Scrub,” I cried, “thy God, Yoshi-P, hath lent thee—by these cat girls he hath sent thee,
Respite—respite and despair from thy memories of the grey parse score;
Quaff, oh quaff these wipes and forget this grey parse score!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

“Role-player!” said I, “thing of evil—prophet still, if bird or devil!,
Whether WoW sent thee, or whether venue tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted,
On this home by Horror haunted—tell me truly, I implore,
Is there—is there balm in the Quicksands? Tell me—tell me, I implore!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

“Role-player!” said I, “thing of evil—prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us—by Yoshi-P we both adore,
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, as a poor and edgy Eorzean,
It shall clasp a sainted DPS number whom the devs name the purple parse score,
Clasp a rare and radiant DPS number whom the devs name purple parse score.”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

“Be those words our sign of parting, troll!” I shrieked, upstarting,
“Get thee back to twitter and tiktok, I implore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! Quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting,
On the pallid bust of Sokken just above my basement door;
And his eyes like the all-seeing Zuckerberg that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor,
Shall be lifted—nevermore!

Chapter 41
Subject: Ship-Head Uleena
Species: Urakari
Description: Reptilian humanoid, no tail. 5'3" (1.6 m) avg height. 135 lbs (61 kg) avg weight. 105 year life expectancy.
Ship: RSV Lowelana {Fights with Honor}
Location: Sol

"It's been more than three hours, ship-head. When can we stand down?" asked Kriin.
"We'll be able to stand down when they tell us to stand down, sister," replied Kraan in my stead.
Kriin made a face and hissed softly at him. This playful exchange did a lot to ease the tension that had settled over the bridge as time had dragged on. It even got a smile out of Liwna.
It was still unnerving to be on standby so long after the battle had ended, though. I'd asked for an explanation but received no response, which indicated something was happening or had happened. The OU had consistently increased their numbers with each wave, so I desperately hoped it wasn't going to be another attack. Maybe we'd received orders from the Republic to go home. One could dream.
A soft bing from my terminal nearly made me jump. All heads turned to me as I opened the message, desperate to know if we were in the clear. I nibbled my tongue as I softly pressed the notification to open the message.
--
Ship-Head Uleena
RSV Lowelana and her crew are to stand down but remain in a state of readiness. You are summoned to meet with Admiral Heckett and myself. A guide will meet you in the bay.
Fleet Leader Onaya
--
I looked around at the faces of my bridge crew. They were all hoping I would be giving the order to stand down, to tell them we were in the clear. The anticipation was brutal, and I found myself considering a little prank. If I were to simply say that the message was nothing, the looks of disappointment would be pretty great. Although, the fleet leader wouldn't appreciate waiting...
"Stand down, but stay ready," I said and then sighed audibly, "I'm off to meet with command."
"You have my sympathies, sir," Liwna said.
"I'm sure it won't be that bad, ship-head. Maybe they want to give you a medal," Kraan said cheerily.
"Don't get your hopes up, sir. We didn't really do anything medal-worthy. But maybe we'll get to see one of the planets we've been protecting," Kriin said excitedly.
"That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is 'one of the planets we put at risk'," Kraan replied with air quotes.
"That's rich, coming from the cloaca that put the planets at risk in the first place!"
"Hey! I was following procedure! Why don't you..."
"That's enough," I interrupted, trying to keep a straight face. "I'll go find out what they want. You just stay ready for our next move."
I stood and left as the two siblings began whispering insults at each other. As I exited the ship, I wondered how long I'd have to wait for the guide. To my surprise, the guide was actually waiting for me. A seven foot tall human wearing olive drab armor and carrying a rifle that was the size of my leg. That's a bad sign.
"Ship-head Uleena. This way please," the marine gestured.
"Of course," I said as I began to follow.
We walked past a crew of gont engineers and one of them waved at me. I waved back. Must be Plinas, but it's hard to tell them apart at a distance. We continued into a corridor and I began to have questions. I worked up my nerve to ask the giant death machine that was guiding me to my destination.
"So, why isn't Tim guiding me this time?" I finally asked.
"I don't know, sir," he replied.
"Do you know Corporal Simmons and Lance Corporal Johnson?"
"I know a few Corporals named Simmons and a few lances named Johnson, sir."
"They're the ones who were assigned to our rescue detail."
"Oh. Then they're probably part of a ship crew. Or maybe MARSOC," he said. "So I probably don't know them."
"What's MARSOC?"
"Marine Special Operations Command. It's special forces. They get assigned to whatever needs a specially trained marine, and usually whatever's closest to wherever they happen to be."
"So they probably wouldn't still be on the Thanatos, then?"
"Sir, I'm not qualified to even begin to wager a guess," the marine said with a chuckle. "There's plenty of MARSOC marines aboard, but I'm not one of 'em. Just a home-grown, corn-fed grunt, at your service."
"Corn?" I asked. "What's corn?"
"Huh?" He stopped to look at me. "Oh, right. It's a type of vegetable that's kinda sweet. Small yellow kernels that grow on a cob are the edible part, but some people use the leaves to store their food for some added flavor."
"I see... So you eat a lot of corn?"
"Yes, sir. It's good for muscles if you have it with meat," he said as he began to guide me again. "The phrase corn-fed refers to someone who's normal, though. Like, there's nothing special about them."
"But aren't you one of those... um..." I said as I struggled to remember the term.
"A gen-alt? Nope," the marine replied with laugh. "Believe it or not, some of us humans naturally get this big."
"Really?" I asked, my eyes widening in shock.
"Oh yeah. The genetic augmentation just swaps around certain genomes that we all already have, or something like that," the marine said. "Technically, every human has a chance to be born with all the benefits of being a gen-alt. It's a pretty low chance though."
It was with this shocking information that we boarded a bus. The ride was spent in silence as I digested what I had just learned. Humans were odd, to be sure. Despite their soft skin and disarming features (which I'm pretty sure has a lot to do with how much of their face actually moves), they were a warrior race.
I remembered how nervous I had been to meet my first Isolan. Now THEY look the part of a warrior race. Muscles that ripple and bulge with every movement, a natural scowl, and elongated canines that can definitely tear into most throats with little to no effort. Their military was very disciplined as well, to the point that horror stories about disciplinary action have spread throughout the fleet. Still, the Republic would have been able to handle the Isolan without much problem if they went rogue.
I can't say the same about humanity, though. Maybe if the Republic had found them early on in their development, we could have taken them. On the other hand, I get the dreadful feeling that we would have lost a lot of people in the attempt. I couldn't help but imagine what life would have been like if humanity had joined the Republic without a fight, though. We'd have a lot more in the way of technology, that's for sure.
They like to give a lot of credit to the knuknu and the gont for their current level of tech, but it's obvious that the majority of it comes from humans. The other species likely sped things along, but humanity would have gotten to the point they are now on their own eventually, and still much faster than us. Although I wonder how much of that is due to their bloody history, and how that history would have changed as part of the Republic.
"We've arrived, sir. Just inside those doors is where the debrief is," the marine gestured.
"Understood, thanks," I replied.
I stepped towards the doors and they opened with a slight hiss. Inside the room was a table with plenty of chairs and several US and Republic officers. I immediately recognized Reynolds and Wong, as well as fleet-leader Onaya. I snapped to attention.
"Ship-head Uleena reporting as ordered, sirs!"
"Sit down, Uleena," Onaya said with smiling eyes.
I took my seat as introductions went around the table. Most of the people here were higher officers of the fleets protecting Sol, but there were also a couple of diplomats from both sides. Not my sister, though. Thank the sun. I'm sure she tried to be here, but I'm willing to bet that our father blocked her attempts. Far too dangerous.
"There's one more that we need to introduce, but he's been delayed somewhat," Admiral Heckett said as the doors hissed.
I turned to look and saw a short human in the black directorate armor with two marines flanking it. It took me a second to realize that the human looked short because the marines were so damned tall. I'll never get used to that.
"What impeccable timing," Heckett said with a grin. "Everyone, meet Director 3. I'm sure he already knows who you are."
"Correct," Director 3 said as he took a seat. "Ship-head Uleena, pleasure to see you again."
"Likewise," I replied.
"Oh, hey Uleena!" one of the marines said with a familiar voice. "Good to see you again."
"Simmons, we're on duty. We can say hi later," the other marine said.
I smiled and replied, "Hi Corporal Simmons and Lance Corporal Johnson. Good to see you too."
I was glad to see the two of them alive and well. So glad that I almost didn't notice the rest of the Republic officers giving me a sideways glance. As I deflated slightly under their gaze, I noticed that the human officers were doing the same to the two marines. I guess we're more alike than I thought.
"Okay. Well, with all of the pleasantries out of the way, I'm going to turn things over to Director 3," Admiral Heckett said.
"Thank you, Admiral," Director 3 said with a nod before turning to look at the Republic side of the table. "The invasion of the Omni-Union stronghold was a success."
Clapping and some light cheering erupted from both sides of the table, but Director 3 quickly held up a hand to quiet things down.
"That's the only good news, I'm afraid. What I am about to tell you has already been relayed to the Republic's senior leadership, and they will be communicating with you in regards to whether they consider the information classified or not. Until they do so, I recommend treating it as classified," he said.
After a round of nods, he continued, "First, some of you may already know this, but we have a superweapon called the USSS Nidhogg. It's a dreadnought class ship that has the capacity to destroy a solar system by causing a star to go supernova."
"What?" one of our officers asked in shock. Several senior officer's eyes immediately darted towards the offending individual, who quickly quieted down.
"Your shock is understandable. To clarify, the Nidhogg was built in response to our conflict with the Daluran, as a deterrence to any further xenocidal action taken against the United Systems and its member species. Frankly, many of us hoped to never use it. But we were forced to use it against the Omni-Union during the invasion."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was like the room got smaller somehow. A superweapon that can destroy an entire solar system, something the likes of which the Republic would likely never get close to. And they USED it. Wait hold on, did he say...
"Apologies, Director, but what do you mean you were forced to use it?" Fleet-Leader Onaya asked.
"Exactly that. One of our AI infiltrated their planetary systems, as planned, and retrieved mission critical intelligence. The next step of the plan would have been to cripple the OU's planetary activities by any means possible and move on to the next planet," Director 3 said. "However, it turned out that the planet wasn't actually a planet at all. It was a massive machine containing an Artificial Intelligence of unknown origin. And it was heavily armed."
Silence filled the room as images taken from US ships began to display. A planet filled our view. It looked like any other planet, but something was off about it. The images scrolled until they reached a short video of the planet firing, and two US ships exploding. My blood ran cold. Two US ships, ships with the most advanced shielding and hulls that I've ever seen, with one shot.
As much as I hated to admit it, I was grateful that they had that superweapon. The Republic was pursuing an offensive war against the Omni-Union even now, and if we would have run into this thing... Sun preserve us.
"This AI was called Prime 29 and the machine itself is a Mobile Prime Platform. During the confrontation with our AI, Prime two-niner was able to extract actionable intelligence from the AI. Thankfully, prior to this confrontation our AI managed to disable their communications which prevented Prime two-niner from being able to communicate said information with the Omni-Union. We were able to keep it trapped in the system using our own warp-jamming technology," Director 3 said. "The reason that we used the Nidhogg was to make certain that it didn't have enough time to eliminate the warp-jammers or escape their range."
"If we had tried to eliminate that thing with standard tactics, our casualties would have been in the tens of thousands," Admiral Heckett said. "As it stands, we lost 2,316 ships and more than one million marines."
"The Republic's casualties would have easily exceeded one hundred thousand ships. If we were even able to take it out at all," Fleet-Leader Onaya said, looking somewhat deflated.
"Was this the only Mobile Prime Platform, sir?" I asked, knowing damned well what the answer would be.
"No," Omega said, his avatar appearing where the images were previously. "We found intelligence in the form of a list that shows a total of 114 Mobile Prime Platforms. The intel indicated that at least one was damaged beyond repair prior to Prime 29's destruction, and that one is currently being built. Since we couldn't confirm if the other four planets in the stronghold system were MPPs or not, we will go on the assumption that there are now 111."
"Why don't we know if the other four planets are MPPs?" Onaya asked. "They didn't attack, so isn't it likely that they weren't?
"I suspect that the platforms require immense amounts of power, and so they stay in a sort of hibernation until something forces them out of it. Since the OU didn't awaken the MPP, it's reasonable to assume that they might not be able to. Prime 29 also had its communications cut, so it wouldn't have been able to wake them up, either," Omega said. "We had to go on the assumption that the other four planets were also MPPs, which is why we utilized the Nidhogg."
"So what's the plan to deal with them?" I asked.
"We're working on that," Director 3 interjected. "Obviously, we don't want to be running around causing supernovas everywhere."
"I guess it's time to come up with another 'bigger gun', eh?" Tim asked.
"Or a lot of little ones," John replied, appearing next to Omega.
A lot of our officers began to look nervous. Until very recently, AI was seen as the enemy and it's hard to kill old habits. They all looked to fleet leader Onaya to judge what their reactions should be. He didn't react, so they didn't either.
A bigger gun, or even a lot of little ones, would probably take quite a while to come up with. The US has amazing manufacturing procedures, but not nearly as many shipyards as the Republic. It was arguable whose engineers were better. The US had come up with some amazing things, but they had the benefit of necessity driving their creativity. Our engineers came up with what they created out of pure speculation. If the two worked together...
"Omega, if I may ask, how long would it take the US to create a new fleet?"
"One of ours or one of yours," the AI asked with a hint of smugness.
"One of yours," I replied.
"Factoring in material procurement, at least a year and a half. Assuming everyone working at capacity and nothing went wrong, which isn't a very realistic assumption," Omega said.
"What about us, fleet leader? How long to manufacture five million ships?" I asked.
"Or primary delay would be material procurement, but we managed to do eight million in seven months at the beginning of the OU war," Onaya replied.
All of the US officers eyebrows rose at this. I took a little pleasure at being able to surprise them, for once. Our manufacturing capability was borne from nearly every species already having at least one shipyard prior to joining the Republic, and maintaining those shipyards even now. If we were able to apply US manufacturing standards to those shipyards, the OU wouldn't stand a chance.
"We have a lot more shipyards than the US does," I began. "If the US were to make use of those shipyards, both sides would benefit massively."
"While that may be true, there's always the risk of us turning on each other after the OU is dealt with," Omega said.
"That's a bit pessimistic," John said.
"But historically accurate!" Tim cheerily exclaimed.
"That may be the case, but there are ways to prevent that. Bolstering the US fleet and shipyards to meet the same size as the Republic's, for instance. It would take quite a while for the US to catch up to the Republic's ship count on its own, and we've got barely any chance of catching up to your tech on our own," I said, holding my hands up to quiet the AI.
"This is true," Onaya began, "and your corporations would even fall in line. Greed is their primary motivator, and this deal would require a lot of trade and chance for profits."
Director 3 looked deep in thought before he finally spoke up, "Is this something that the Republic would agree to?"
"Probably," I said. "I'm not an official diplomat so I can't say with 100% certainty, but the US is more likely to say no than we are."
"I'll bring it to the Directorate, and we'll convince the senate of the necessity," Director 3 said with a nod.
"And I'll get have the diplomatic corps draw up an official agreement, and I'll push the proper buttons to get the votes on our end," Onaya said with smiling eyes. "Also, Uleena, you actually are an official diplomat now. The RSV Lowelana is our first armed diplomatic vessel. The decision came down yesterday."
"What?" I asked in shock.
"Your temporary post as liaison has become a permanent one. You'll be starting your training as soon as we can spare you. Same with your crew," Onaya said, the smiling eyes turning ever so slightly malicious.
Ah, I see. The Sun has forsaken me for some grave, unknown sin. Woe be unto me.

2023.06.02 15:16 magnolia_unfurling Hello! Does anyone knowwhich chapter in Priests of Mars the following excerpt is from:

I have listened through the audiobook and would like to go back to it.
Priests of Mars by Graham McNeill Context: An Eldar ship is pursing Archmagos Lexell Kotov's fleet in the Halo Scar. The ships are being damaged and risk being pulled into the gravational anamolies that would crush any ship that strays too close. The Eldar have already destroyed the Retribution Class Battleship the Cardinal Boras and killed Kul-Gilad, Reclusiarch of the Black Templars. Excerpt: The flanks of the Speranza shuddered as a weapon system built into its superstructure ground upwards on heavy duty rails. A vast gun tube rose from the angled planes of the Ark Mechanicus like the great menhir of some tribal place of worship being lifted into place. Power readouts, the likes of which had rarely been seen in the Imperium since before the wars of Unity, bloomed within the weapon and a pair of circling tori described twisting arcs around the tapered end of the unveiled barrel. Elements of the technology that had gone into their construction would have been familiar to some of the more esoteric branches of black hole research and relativistic temporal arcana, but their assembled complexity would have baffled even the Fabricator General on Mars. Pulsing streams of purple-hued anti-matter and graviton pumps combined in unknowable ways in the heart of a reactor that drew its power from the dark matter that lurked in the spaces between the stars. It was a gun designed to crack open the stately leviathans of ancient void war, a starship killer that delivered the ultimate coup de grace Without any command authority from the bridge of the Speranza, the weapon unleashed a silent pulse that covered the distance to the Starblade at the speed of light. But even that wasn’t fast enough to catch a ship as nimble as one built by the bonesingers of BielTan and guided by the prescient sight of a farseer. The pulse of dark energy coalesced a hundred kilometres off the vessel’s stern and a miniature black hole exploded into life, dragging in everything within its reach with howling force. Stellar matter, light and gravity were crushed as they were drawn in and destroyed, and even the Starblade’s speed and manoeuvrability weren’t enough to save it completely as the secondary effect of the weapon’s deadly energies brushed over its solar sail. Chronoweaponry shifted its target a nanosecond into the past, by which time the subatomic reactions within every molecule had shifted microscopically and forced identical neutrons into the same quantum space. Such a state of being was untenable on a fundamental level, and the resultant release of energy was catastrophic for the vast majority of objects hit by such a weapon. Though on the periphery of the streaming waves of chronometric energy, the Starblade’s solar mast detonated as though its internal structure had been threaded with explosive charges. The sail tore free of the ship, ghost images of its previous existence flickering as the psycho-conductive wraithbone screamed in its death throes. Blue flame geysered from the topside of the eldar vessel and the craft lurched away from the force of the blast. Its previously distorted and fragmentary outline became solid, and the circling captains of the Kotov Fleet wasted no time in loosing salvo after salvo of torpedoes at the newly revealed warship Mortis Voss let fly first, with a thirty-strong battery of warheads aimed in a spreading net that would make escape virtually impossible. Wrathchild and Moonchild followed, firing bracketing spreads of torpedoes before both vessels heeled over to present their flank batteries of lances. Stabbing beams of high energy blazed at the Starblade and had this engagement been fought in open space, the eldar vessel would have been reduced to a rapidly expanding bloom of shattered wraithbone, combusting oxygen and white-hot debris. The gravitational vagaries of the Halo Scar made for an unforgiving battleground and only a handful of torpedoes punched through its starboard hull to tear out great chunks of its guts in raging firestorms of detonation. Even with the clarity provided by the roused machine heart of the Speranza it was impossible to tell what, if anything, had survived the storm of lances, torpedoes and the crushing power of the temporary black hole. It was collapsing in on itself in a cannibalistic storm of self-immolation, and by the time its raging furies had faded into the background radiation of the Scar, there was nothing to indicate the presence of the Starblade. Every shipmaster knew the eldar ship had likely survived the punishing assault, but their decks echoed with the cheers of jubilant ratings, many of whom had not expected to live through the battle. The electromagnetic hash of the void engagement would remain lousy with spikes of dirty radiation for years to come, painting a vivid picture of the battle for anyone that cared to look. The chrono-weapon lowered from its firing position with majestic grace until it was once again flush and secure within the body of the Speranza, invisible and indistinguishable from the surrounding superstructure, no doubt as its builders had intended. The Starblade was still out there somewhere, but for now its threat had been neutralised, its boarders repelled and its captain given a valuable lesson in humility. And with its retreat, the Kotov Fleet pressed on.

2023.06.02 15:07 Mythos_Industries Papa Bones: Time II

I’ve spent the last couple of days helping repair the damage to the town from the attack. The events of that day keep replaying in my mind. I’m convinced something was off but I can’t but my finger on it. As I think about this, I lay down a sheet of singles. I make the nails hover above it and slam down. Securing the sheet to the wood.
“Papa Bones.” A woman named Elizabeth calls out.
I straighten up and wipe my forehead with a rag. “Yes?”
Elizabeth wands me a glass of water. “It is absolutely hot out here. Thought you could use this.”
I take the glass. “Thank you. I take a drink and say. “I should be done here in a hour.”
“Thank you for helping us…it’s just…”
“Just what?” I ask.
“It’s just…you’re not abusing your powers helping us. Are you?”
I give her a warm smile. “I can see where you are coming from but no. I’m protector of Ayzian. I use my powers to protect and help. Even if I’m just putting shingles on. So no. I’m not abusing my powers.
Elizabeth smiles back. “I just wanted to make sure that you wouldn’t displease the Loa by helping like this.”
“I appreciate your concern.”
I finish the water and hand the glass back. “If it makes you feel better. I’m repairing a chicken coop after this. It’s a smaller project so I will be using a hammer.” I teases.
“Sounds good.” Elizabeth says before becoming serious. “If you need anything, just ask.”
“I will. Thank you.”
Elizabeth nods and climbs down the ladder. I look around. By the looks of it, I will need two more sheets of singles. I look down and two more sheets float out of the bag and up to me. I secure them and true to my word, I was done with the repairs in about a hour. I clean up the area and say my goodbyes. Like usual, the afternoon was hot as hell and I decide to cool down at Pops’s restaurant. I walk to the restaurant and when I walk in I close my eyes.
“Your black ass going to stand there all day and block the customers from coming in?”
I open my eyes and look at Pops. “I happen to be a customer.”
“What do you want?” Pops asks.
“Ice tea. Large.” I ask.
Pops points to the ice tea dispenser. “You know where it is.” Then he walks into the kitchen.
I grab a glass and fill it with ice and pour the tea. I sit down as Marcus walks out of the kitchen. “Julian!”
I take a sip and nod. “Hey, Marcus. Working the lunch rush?”
He stands behind the counter. “Yeah. My shift is almost over.”
It’s been a bit since we talked. “How are things?” I ask.
“Good. Good. I’m learning a lot from Pops. He says I will be able to contact a Loa soon.”
I lean back and smile. “Excellent. How is the cooking lessons going?”
Marcus smiles. “Even better. Pops says I got talent and here in a few years. My gumbo will be as half as good as his.”
I chuckle. “You know what that means, right?”
“No. What?”
“You are very good.” I say.
“Really? How come he don’t say that?”
“Compliments from Pops is rarely given out. To be your age and for him to say that means you are very good. You just got to know how Pops works.”
“Cool.”
“The ultimate judge is my friend Faust. She loves Pops’s gumbo. You get a thumbs up from her, you got something special.”
“I’ll have to cook for her one day.” Marcus says.
“Oh, she would love that.”
“Hey, can I ask you a question?”
I take another sip. “Sure.”
“I made a dish. Blackened chicken on some fettuccine alfredo. I like it. My mom likes it.”
“Pops is giving you static.” I add.
“Yeah. He says it’s not a good fit for the restaurant because it’s not traditional Cajun cooking. But I think it will do good here.”
I take another sip before answering. “Pops is old as hell and set in his ways but there is a way.”
“How?” Asks Marcus.
“Faust. Her word goes a long way with Pops. Impress her and her word will almost guarantee it will be sold here.”
“Ok. How do I do that? When is she coming here?”
I finish my iced tea. “I’ll tell you what. You make it and some gumbo and I will take it to her.”
“You will?” Asks Marcus.
“Sure. I always support young entrepreneurs.”I say.
“Sweet!”
I hold a hand up. “Easy there. I’m busy right now. Here in a few days when the town is squared away. I’ll do it.”
“Thanks Julian.”
“No problem.” I say.
Pops walks out of the kitchen. “Boy, you done corrupting my worker?”
“Almost. Word on the street is that Marcus’s gumbo is as good as yours.” I say.
Pops hurumphs. “Huh. I don’t know about all of that. He is a better dishwasher than you.”
Me and Marcus share a smile.
“Sir, I cleaned the tables. Can I go now?” Marcus asks.
“Yeah, I saw you prepared the okra.”
“I sure did.” Marcus says.
“Sure. Can you swing by and help at dinner?”
“I sure can, sir.”
Pops looks at me. “I don’t know why people complain about todays youth. He works harder than your lazy ass.”
“That’s my cue to leave.” I say as I stand. I look at Marcus. “Walk you home?”
“Sure.”
We leave Pops and enter the heat of the early afternoon.
“I can’t wait to make my blackened chicken for Faust.”
“I’m sure it will be a hit.” I say.
“Hey, Julian. What was that thing in the sky the other day? My mom was scared.”
“I don’t blame her. I was kinda scared myself.”
“You were scared?” Asks Marcus.
“Sure. Why wouldn’t I be? As far as what it was. I couldn’t tell you what it was. It was odd. I hope it won’t happen again.”
“What if it does?”
“Then Papa Bones will protect the town again.”
We walk another few steps before I speak again.
“No matter what. The Loa help us. My situation is more condensed than the standard practitioner of Voodoo. For example, Marionette of the dry arms.”
“What about her?” Asks Marcus.
“She loathes enslavement. She has helped us break our chains both metaphorically and literally. That’s why Ayzian is the way it is. All are welcome here.”
“I see.”
“That is why there are so many Loa. We have many needs. From gardening to love.”
“Is there a Loa for homework?” Marcus asks.
I chuckle. The question every young person asks. Myself included once upon a time. “While there are some Loa that can help. They can only help not do the work for you.”
“Are you sure?”
I put a hand on his shoulder. “Yes.”
“Damn it.”
I chuckle a little harder now.
As we walk through the town park, I see a group of children sitting around Vincent.
“What’s going on?” Asks Marcus.
“Well, his name is Vincent. He’s new to town. He seems quite skilled and helped during the attack.”
We walk and stand next to a tree and watch. Vincent seems to be telling a story. The children are enraptured.
“The wind was howling.” Vincent’s says as he spreads his hands.
“Wasn’t the hurricane? Asks a child.
Vincent points to them. “Yes but it was the worst hurricane ever seen. And just like that…BOOM,”
The group gasps.
“Two eyes appeared in the storm. The eyes spoke with a powerful voice that shook the ground. Papa Bones came to me and you know what he said? He said he didn’t know if he could do this. You know what I told him?”
Many of the children shake their heads no.
“I told Papa Bones. I said, Papa Bones. You are the champion of the Loa and maybe the world. You can defeat this evil.”
Children stay quiet. Vincent continues.
“He said to me. I don’t know if I’m strong enough. Will you help me?”
“Is that how it happened?” Marcus asks me.
I lean against the tree. “It most certainly not the way it happened.”
Vincent starts walking around. Looking at each child as he passes them. “Then I said. It would be my honor Papa Bones. Fly, fly to the sky and I will distract it. Papa Bones held my shoulders and said Vincent, you are a good friend to me and the Loa.”
Marcus looks at me and I say. “Those words were never spoken.”
Vincent continues his tall tale. “So there we were. Papa Bones and I. Papa Bones took to the air and started throwing fireballs, which did nothing.”
That part angers me.
“As the one sided fight continued. The Loa touched me…”
Vincent takes a pregnant pause.
“Do you know what they said to me?”
The children shake their head no.
“They said, Vincent. Perhaps we have need for a second champion. Then…then I felt a great power enter me.”
“This is bullshit.” I mumble.
“I was also given the knowledge of what to do. I called up to Papa Bones and I said. Papa! Stand aside! The Loa are with us and they are here to help through me. Can you guess what happened next?”
Many of the children shake their head no.
“With my new found knowledge. I knew what to do. During the fight the Loa had opened a hole in the clouds. I knew where the sunbeam was going to land so I got into position and reflected it back to the monster. The reflected sun greatly hurt the monster.”
Vincent takes a pause.
“It is now when Papa Bones’s little fireballs could hurt the monster. Together we raised the winds and tore the cloud monster apart.”
The children cheer.
“That’s right. When the clouds disappeared and the sun returned. Papa Bones flew down to me and said. Thank you Vincent. I couldn’t save Ayzian without you. I said to him. It was my pleasure Papa Bones. We are both children of the Loa. Your fight is my fight.”
I’ve had about enough of this. I take a step forward. “An interesting story.”
Vincent looks up and sees me. “It is. Children. That will be enough stories for today.”
The children get up. Many pass me and I smile and say hi to them as they pass. When the children are gone, I walk towards Vincent. “Telling lies to children?”
Vincent smiles at me. “Every story need’s embellishment.”
“Embellishment maybe but not lies.” I counter.
“Come now, Papa Bones. Is your ego so fragile, you can not stand thinking you may have needed help?”
“I believe that story reflected your ego. Not mine.”
“There is no harm in what I said.” Vincent states.
“Yes. There was. Most of that was fabrication. I will not allow you to lie to the children.”
“A good story does not rely on only the truth.”
I step towards Vincent. “Let’s see if the Loa agree. I can take us to the crossroads and Legba can give us his opinion.”
Vincent smile fades. “There’s no need for such an extreme response.”
I take one more step towards Vincent. “Oh, it’s no problem. We can go right now.”
“Like I said. It was only a harmless story. I must be going. Good day.”
Vincent walks away and Marcus walks up to me. “You don’t like him. Do you?”
I watch Vincent as he walks. “No. I don’t believe I do.”

2023.06.02 15:01 Charcharbinks98 A Literary Beast

Ellith Kensington, the famous horror author of the 1600's, was synonymous with controversy. Previously exiled from several communities, he now dwelled amongst the Plymouth Colony. The townsfolk were wary of him and his abhorrent writing. They fearfully pondered the rumors of his past, the stories of his creatures, and the inevitable disasters that seemed to always follow in his wake.
Kensington's publisher's deadlines encroached ever so closely onto him, in this, the hour of an impossible decision. Write the story so he can afford to eat and run from the life he's made for himself once again, or suffer in starvation and welcome death.
He wet his quill with ink. Flames leapt in the nearby fire, illuminating the vacant parchment that lie before him, along with his gaunt and slender face. Perspiration clung to his brow as he gripped his writing quill.
Food came at a cost and his writing brought the only chance of attaining what he so desperately needed. He was strapped for means of purchasing food due to the length of time since his last story. His publishers grew impatient and angry. He had waited as long as he could without eating, the hunger was killing him. Living in fear of his own writing and the certain doom that follows was no longer an option.
The hungered pains and shrieks of his stomach prodded along his relent. In a moment of weakness, He decided to abandon his morality altogether.
Fear grasped and tightened it's cold fingers round his shoulders as he pressed quill to paper. Once more, he breathed life into the macabre.
It's happening.
A portal blacker than the ink on his quill, stained the night sky cracking the dimensions between time and space.
Black liquid spilled through, splattering out a limp and lifeless creature onto the cobblestone street.
The creatures eyes open.
Its claws sheathe out of its massive paws and the creature's legs twitch. It stands tall and shakes off the inky afterbirth onto the nearing houses and rooftops. Towering over the town, the creature lifts its head and lets out a deafening shriek.
Inside, a startled Kensington fearfully fumbles, overturning his ink.
The creature scans the streets and targets a young woman desperately seeking shelter from its fury.
THE CREATURE POUNCES.
Kensington rushes to the front door and flings it ajar, stumbling back in terror. No more than three yards before him lay a woman in the street, pressed against the cobblestone by another of his cryptid creations. Its claws had pierced her lifeless body all the way through, curling into the dirt below.
It devoured the woman and triumphantly roared with a wicked delight, echoing amongst the screams and shouts of the nearby townspeople.
Kensington's guilt tore at his very soul. He scampered to back to his writing desk and, through his writing, directs the beast to his front door.
The massive beast fills the doorway, splintering the wooden beams and decimating the stone walls. as Kensington lifts his arms, accepting defeat. He Embraces death, so as to spawn evil in this world no longer.
The Beast clamps down on him. It's incredibly sharp sets of teeth serating his midsection to mush, accepting his offer and claiming the both of their existences.
An eerie silence danced amongst the town, the stars and the moon above; as the flame lighting the wick on his writing desk burnt out.
Kensington and his cryptids are no more.
