Cincinnati lab rescue |

Trying to figure out if pet insurance is worth it for big procedures. I have two 3 year old lab dog mixes that are in good health, but I worry we fixed the boy too early (the rescue demanded it) and he is big/tall and might require hip dysplasia surgery/care in his lifetime. I have no problem paying for routine checkups and even accidents they’ve had, but a surprise $15k+ operation is daunting.
He is a 3 year old lab mix over 70 lbs (we also have his litter mate, a female about 69lbs) living in the greater New Orleans area. Both in good health at the moment.

I am owned by a 17 y/o neutered DSH male cat who has been marking my walls for years. His vet has referred him to an internal medicine specialist who is not available until July; but I wanted to see if anyone else had thoughts in the meantime. He is currently on: 5 mg of Amitriptylline and Cosequin with 1 packet of Calming Care sprinkles daily. He also gets Onsior 6 mg weekly. He gets a urinary care GAG supplement chew treat twice daily. He was on Solencia injections monthly but his vet wasn’t as familiar with it and wanted to just use Onsior to simplify the treatment plan.
He eats Royal Canin urinary diet wet food at least two cans a day (he weighs 9.8 lbs); he lives with a 6 year old DSH neutered feline male idiot. His labs are normal, no dental issues as of Jan 2023, ultrasound was completed in May without stones, UA with gross hematuria. He has a choice of a Petlibro fountain or KittySpring gravity fed water dishes. The walls of the house are dedicated to vertical space and scratching posts.
I have three litter boxes (using Dr. Elsey’s cat attract)cleaned daily, I am using Rescue wipes and Zero Odor spray to clean spray areas and the litter boxes. He is indoor except if he is out on our catio and he will walk on a leash. He is wearing a Comfort Zone collar and I have Feliway diffusers where he is marking the most.

this post is about my cat Miko… here’s some stats- he’s a yr old domestic long hair cat. i rescued him as a kitten from a pop-up event that our local shelter held.
Miko just went to the emergency vet this past Thursday bc he was chronically constipated and struggling to use the bathroom. his lab showed he was so backed up that he had to receive not one but THREE enemas. the vet recommended a new diet for Miko but i am having some trouble w what to buy him. she said that high fibelow fat foods have actually been shown to increase constipation and told me to stop using pumpkin in his food all together. she recommended a brand named Eukanuba(?) but i could not find it anywhere. she noted it needs to have high moisture and low fiber count.
i’ve been feeding him the Kindfull dry food (mornings) and the Kindfull wet digestive canned food from Target at night and adding in salmon oil and native probiotic powder, but now i have to transition him over to wet food morning and night.
i’ve been looking at a few options like the Royal Canin digestive wet food and the Wellness Core digestive wet food but it’s super overwhelming and the reviews are making me feel like every brand sucks lol. any advice would be super duper helpful! thank you (:

Paid work experience: clinical research project coordinator for stroke research studies [I don’t know whether to classify this as clinical experience or research experience; I’m leaning toward clinical since there’s a lot of patient interaction and I’m working with neurologists] (full-time position for 2 years; I currently have over 1,800 hours). Writing tutor at my university’s writing center (6 semesters, 3-4 hours/week). Chemistry tutor for gen chem and orgo (1 semester, 4 hours/week)

Hi, my rat passed away a little bit ago and we're looking to adopt more asap, so my other ear doesn't get depressed. I love in the Cincinnati area. Does anyone know any rescues or breeders who currently have rats for sale?

This is our new rescue pup. To me he looks like lab and some kind of shepherd. He's a little over 7 months old and was in a rescue shelter from very shortly after being born. We've had him for three weeks now. He's a very good, very sweet boy, but only to me - at least when we're in the house. Other family members he either shies away from with his tail tucked or occasionally growls at, which obviously isn't cool. He hasn't shown the slightest hint at being a biter but I'm definitely keeping a close eye on that and fortunately the kids are all of an age where they respect his growl and don't try to force themselves on him. He can usually be convinced to very reluctantly take a treat from someone else. He's also good with his crates, loves to lay down in them for naps when I'm working or in bed. Also he's being treated for asymptomatic Giardia - or at least he's got energy and his poop looks like dog poop usually does - I don't know how he feels though. That one's kind of a bummer as he is very friendly toward other dogs and I have to keep him away from them until he's cured.
Here are a couple observations I've made that have me curious: first, when he's in the car he's very different. He loves being in the car and tolerates the rest of the family being in there with him. If I have to leave him in the car for a few minutes (when it's cool out obviously) he's fine - he curls up around his chew-toy and contents himself with it until I return. Second, he seems more fearful around females than males. This is pretty weird to me as dogs I've known in the past who had a gender dislike usually didn't like males.
So the two questions I have, and they're probably different sides of the same coin are: how do I safely work with him on his separation anxiety, and how do I address his fear-based reaction towards other family members when in the home?

Here's what I've managed to piece together given what I've seen (which is mostly the first five or six seasons of the show, up to Crisis, give or take a few YouTube clips here and there).
Thawne-A (Thawne-as-Wells) travels back in time looking for the Flash. In the Season 2 episode "Reverse-Flash Returns," he learns that Flash is indigenous to the early 21st century, and is associated with Star Labs, Harrison Wells, and Cisco Ramon.
At some point Thawne learns Barry's identity (do we ever see this take place?), and travels back in time to try and kill him as a child. Young Barry is rescued by Season 9 Barry, however, so Thawne kills his mom instead, gets stranded in 2000, kills Earth-1 Harrison Wells and uses futuristic DNA-mimicking technology to take his place.
At some point Thawne-as-Wells creates a timeline remnant of himself, even though his powers are weak and his whole thing is that he's not supposed to be able to travel through time. Presumably this version of TaW is the one who appears frequently in later seasons of the show.
TA is erased from existence, at least from 2015 forward (and excepting his appearance as a timeline remnant in "R-F Returns") when Eddie Thawne shoots himself.
Thawne-B is created when Season 2 Barry stops Thawne from killing his mom and briefly imprisons him in the present day of the Flashpoint timeline. This Thawne later travels back and kills Barry's mom, at Barry's instigation; then learns he's been (mostly) erased from the timeline, prompting him to begin searching for the Spear of Destiny, etc.
TB is erased from existence by the Black Racer at the end of Legends Season 2. (But apparently resurrected by the time wraiths at some point and turned into a watch dog for a fixed point in time related to World War II?)
Thawne-C (Thawne as Wells, timeline variant) first appears during the events of "Crisis on Earth-X." This version is presumably the one who at some point travels forward to 2034, gets incarcerated until 2049, and becomes Nora West-Allen's mentor.
After (?) being set free, TC sets in motion a series of events which moves the timeline of Crisis forward by five years, thus negating Original Nora's existence. At some point this iteration of Thawne is killed and/or erased from existence as well.
Thawne-D (TaW, yet another timeline variant) is created by Barry in order to help him defeat Godspeed at the end of Season 7. It's this Thawne who switches destinies with Barry during the crossover event at the beginning of Season 8.
Season 8 also establishes that Original Thawne first met the Flash at some point in the future. TD tells Barry that his future self stole Thawne's thunder by saving a crowd of people Thawne was "meant" to save (do we ever get further elaboration on this?), but we *see* OG Thawne encounter Flash for the first time as a scientist working with... a female scientist that he was in love with. (Can't remember her name). Thawne first gets his speedster abilities from her. (The imprisoned version of Thawne-D doesn't seem to know who she is, however... do his and Thawne-A's origins differ?)
I'm assuming it's this version of OG Thawne/Thawne-A who eventually (finally) travels back in time to kill Barry during Season 9, thus setting this whole sorrowful string of events into motion. Thawne-D is the one finally, ultimately defeated in the series finale.
So what am I missing?

Hi everyone!
We adopted a puppy (rescued more or less). Mixed breed (we suspect black lab x pit bull) around 3 months old now.
While playing she wants to bite a lot, which I understand is completely normal. I think we have it quite under “control” with correcting and redirecting her. So that’ll probably pass over time.
While playing she can bite quite hard sometimes (like play biting), here’s were we always try to redirect. But sometimes, not in a play session, she kind of nibbles very softly and gently on my fingers.
Should i allow this? Is also redirect?

Looking for advice from any vets/dog nutrition experts who have experience or knowledge of the brand Open Farm. I want what's best for my two rescues, one is a 3yr old pit/lab/boxesuper mutt and the other is a new family member, 15wk old mutt (unsure of DNA yet, test pending) but thinks he's definitely got some pit/shepherd in him. Not sure if breeds matter.
But anyway... Considering switching food to Open Farm (kibble puppy food for puppy and the ancient grains kibble raw mix for the other pup).
I know, or at least I think I know, grain free food is BS and there are credible reports linking it to heart disease. I also know, or at least think I know, a raw diet is also mostly BS and should not be fed to dogs. Is the freeze dried raw kibble mix a viable option so long as it is made with grains?
Overall opinion of Open Farm? Am I being tricked by a fancy marketing campaign that they're doing good for the planet and for our beloved pets?

Greetings everyone.
I am a 26 year old ORM male that is starting is medical school applications. I am trying to make this my only cycle, but we will see how it goes. I am trying to figure out what schools I should Apply to, and have the following stats.
uGPA/SGPA, 2.71/2.71. I know I screwed up in college because I didn’t know how to study and it took me a year to get my footing after determining what I did Freshman year wasn’t going to work. I attended the College of William and Mary, and graduated with my BS in neuroscience with a minor in biochemistry. I had a strong upward trend as undergrad progressed.
Due to my poor Grades, I applied for SMP programs on the advice of my pre-med advisor, due to the factor my undergrad degree was very science heavy, meaning an undergrad post-bacc didn’t benefit me as it would take a massive amount of credits to get somewhat competitive. I recently completed my masters of science in Medical Physiology from Case Western Reserve University, finishing my Degree with a 3.906 GPA, a remarkable improvement.
Regarding MCAT, I am studying for it now, but this is my third attempt. I foolishly thought I could take it while working 50 hours a week in primary care in peak COVID times (2020 to early 2021) and took it twice. I got a 499-> 502. My current initial diagnostic is a 505 without reviewing, and I am shooting for mid 5-teens (514-518) or higher. I am taking the exam 08/19/2023.
Regarding extracurriculars I am listing below, I am using an asterisk for a couple of them due to discrepancies and unusual circumstances.
Paid clinical hours ~5000-5500 hours as a Medical scribe during my gap years
Volunteer medical hours- ~1500 hours* as an EMT during college. I am still certified, and plan to run again once I get my bearings with the MCAT. I ran on average 40-60 hours a month
Shadowing hours: 24 OR 144\*- shadowed my pediatrician for 24 hours. I have additional shadowing hours that I will outline below.
Extra activities:
Rowing for 3.5 years, 4-5 days per week 3 hours a day, also acted as the team medic when present.
General chemistry Lab I TA for 3 fall semesters- 5-6 hours per week on average, more if students scheduled time outside of lab for extra help
Organic Chemistry Lab I TA for 3 Spring Semesters- 5-6 hours per week on average, more if students scheduled time outside of lab for extra help
Regarding the unusual circumstances:
As you can see, I do not have much non clinical volunteering, which is mostly due to the fact I was (and still am) passionate about volunteering using my clinical skills as an EMT. I have spoken directly with a couple adcoms, and both have made the point the argument can be made that the EMS experience can be used for community volunteering, as I a) ran on a volunteer fire department, and b) I have so much clinical experience without the EMS that it would not “impact” my clinical hours (i.e, by considering them community volunteering only, I am not left with next to no clinical hours). I did a lot of hospital volunteer work in high school, but I do not think I can use that on my application. If something has changed, please let me know, as I am more than willing to dig up old paperwork.
Regarding the shadowing, I spent 120 hours shadowing a neurosurgeon in my senior year of high school. I know that high school experiences are not usually considered. However, this situation is unique, as this particular neurosurgeon operated on me and quite literally saved my life when I was 3 months old (corrected hydrocephalus and reversed before the brain damage could be severe). It is quite rare to require medical intervention when young, especially something as severe and urgent as hydrocephalus. It is even rarer to be able to shadow that same neurosurgeon 18 years later. There are not many people that get to shadow the same doctor that saved their life, and without a doubt is one of the most significant meaningful medical experiences I could ever have.
In the same vein as above, in discussion with a couple of schools’ adcoms, they both said that a situation such as this, it would be a detriment to leave out of my application, even if it was in high school, especially since it was at the end of my high school career, and not the start. If there is an argument to be made against this, I am willing to listen.
I also do not have a lot of research experience, about 50 hours, no pubs. I plan on doing medical research in my gap year while I wait to hear back from medical schools.
With these stats in mind, I have a few questions.
First of all, I know that taking the MCAT so late is very risky. I understand that. I am taking a Princeton review class, as it is hard to focus without structure of the class. Due to this, the earliest I can take it is the 19th of August, with the return date around September 15th.
However, One of the Adcoms told me that I can submit my application to medical school early ( think like mid June), and “ear mark” my future MCAT date. Doing this will allow all the processing to occur and verify the information. After the information is verified, they told me that my application would be put “on hold.” And would be processed as soon as my newest scores are released, at which point my application would be complete and awaiting review. This would save me a month on the tail end being complete in September , as I wouldn’t have to submit in September to have everything verified, which would make it complete in October.
If this information is incorrect please let me know.
Now for the list of schools I am looking at applying to. Critique and comments are very welcome and encouraged. For reference, I am marking as in-state for Ohio as I have lived here for a year and a half and qualify as in-state, but I lived in Virginia up until I was 5 days shy of 25, so the argument could be made that I could be in-state, at least tuition wise, for VA schools.
For reference as well, I know it is a bit forward thinking to know what you want to do prior to medical school, but I know I would like to be a pediatric neurosurgeon, as nothing interests me like neurosurgery does, and my personal ties to the field. Due to this, Obviously MD will be preferred over DO, due to the unfortunate bias against DO’s in certain competitive specialties. I know that there are Neurosurgeons that are DO’s but they are extremely rare.

These are my current school lists. I also qualify for FAP with AAMC, so I would like to maximize my primary apps with it because why not? I believe I get to send my primary once to 20 schools with the few waived.
Also I self identified as disadvantaged due to having a physical disability. It is mild, but still present, and it has caused increased hardships in my life. I believe there is a box for this as well.
I also have access to the MSAR, but the problem is that I am not sure what to put my GPA as, since my Graduate GPA is far superior over my undergrad GPA. Any advice would be appreciated.
