Shingles Vaccine?

2023.06.02 23:37 BabbleMabble Shingles Vaccine?

Hi All! My mother who is 71 has severe RA (she’s on Humira but it’s not working, and unfortunately insurance isn’t paying for better options). She’s thinking about getting the shingles vaccine. Is there anything she should be aware of regarding the vaccine or the vaccine side effects? She heard the vaccine can be very painful.

2023.06.02 22:04 Swimming_Gas5746 Q Pharmacist

I got my Covid booster at a major chain drug store The pharmacist before giving me the Covid booster shot told me that she wanted me to be aware of the possible side effects before I took the vaccine.
She proceeded to read from some sheets of paper that she had printed. The web address on the printouts said they were from a website called openvaers.com. She quoted various statistics about the vaccine killing over 30,000 people, over 100,000 hospitalizations, 60,000 people permanently disabled.
She also told me a bunch of other anti-vax talking points such as the vaccine has caused 15,000 cases of shingles because it shuts down your immune system and that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine was never tested on humans(just 8 and 10 mice)
I have a Sister who is deep in Q so I knew exactly where this garbage was coming from. I considered just walking out and getting my shot elsewhere but I feared that this would empower her to continue this behavior.
I reported this incident to both the drug store and to the board of pharmacy in the state I live in.

2023.06.02 18:40 InOtterNews Does Gastroparesis ever go away?

Female, age 38 5’7”, 145lbs Current meds: Keppra and Lamictal for epilepsy For context, I do not have diabetes. I believe my gastroparesis was possibly caused by a slew of stomach viruses that went through our home in the last year or so. I also previously began taking antidepressants/anti-anxiety meds (but have since stopped). From what I understand, gastroparesis has to do with the vagus nerve. I have epilepsy and had Ramsey Hunt Syndrome twice in the last 4 years. I received the shingles vaccine with no other flare ups. Could Ramsey hunt have damaged my vagus nerve? Or epilepsy? RHS caused facial paralysis, vertigo, and nerve pain. Is the VN related to any of those conditions? Either way, my main question is will ever go away? The constant nausea and vomiting has made my seizures get worse because of stress and dehydration. I’ve lost 12lbs in the last 4 weeks. I have generalized epilepsy, tonic clinic seizures, so they’re scary and ever since my gastro issues, I’m scared to do anything or go anywhere for the obvious fear of vomiting, but more importantly having a seizure because of it. I just feel like I’m going in circles and haven’t been able to get any real answers from my doctors on if this will ever go away.

2023.06.02 04:51 Fearless_Nope i think life would’ve been different if my mom had vaccinated me

i’m 21 and came from an “anti-vax” family, im just now learning about all of the different vaccines… i had mono, shingles, and a fever of 104° F that lasted three days at only 18months old (1.5 years)
is it possible that my nerve damage is a direct result of my mom refusing vaccination when i was born?? i’m conflicted and wish i understood this better..

2023.06.01 21:19 mallorn_hugger Rheum won't treat my mother because my mother is afraid of vaccines

Does this sound normal? I myself have now been diagnosed with arthritis and I have spoken to two different rheums about my mom and they both thought it was unusual.
To be clear, she is not an antivaxxer and has had vaccines many times in the past but her inflammation is out of control and vaccines cause more inflammation so she is afraid she will be completely bed ridden from them. Recommended vax are: shingles, hepatitis, covid. That is a lot to be expecting her body to handle, even spaced out.
Mom is 76 (no health insurance for first 15 years of the disease) and has never had proper treatment so she is in a very very bad way.
Am waiting in an appointment with her right now, and trying to figure out what to say. Have kept my dx from mom for various reasons.

2023.06.01 03:05 itsaprocessss Should I get a second opinion?

Was diagnosed with Shingles however I’ve never had Chickenpox and have had the vaccine.
Rash is located right below my rib cage, has been there for 4 days, more itchy bumps started developing on my stomach yesterday. They itch and burn and are much worse when I rub them. Tried Benadryl and hydrocortisone but neither have helped.

King County COVID Report (5/31)
New since last update
7-Day Totals and Averages (5/27)
Vaccination Metrics (Updated on Tuesdays, and covers the total population)
The 368 "new since last update" cases are a little above the 347 reported last week. Unfortunately, there's an issue with this week's download data, so I'm unable to update the graphs and tables. That said, COVID metrics continue to either plateau or trend slightly downwards. There continue to be no signs of any new wave, and metrics are low across the board.
As always, please stay healthy and safe! Great job getting vaccinated, and please get your booster if you're eligible!
Fun fact: Best known to his many fans for one of his most memorable screen incarnations—San Francisco Police Inspector “Dirty” Harry Callahan—the actor and Oscar-winning filmmaker Clint Eastwood is born on May 31, 1930, in San Francisco, California. 2023.05.30 19:34 isanomad Update: I was told I can't get a shingles vaccine as a transplant patient.

Here is a link to my post from two days ago.
First of all, I appreciate the advice I received in my other post. I even got a few messages which meant a lot as I know many of you are busy. So, thanks.
After I messaged my old liver team, they had someone from the ID department reach out to schedule an appointment for my shingles vaccine. I had that appointment this morning and told the nurse administering it that I had been through it to get this thing. She asked me to elaborate and when I did, she said it happens a lot... which is depressing. She said a lot of NPs just flat out refuse to do things like order a vaccine.
I figured I was done but a doctor came in the room after the nurse and started talking to me. We had a great conversation and she took the time to go over my vaccine history so we could make a plan to fill in some of the gaps my pre transplant workup didn't cover. I got those taken care of and before she left the room, she asked if I had any other questions whatsoever.
I asked her about switching from the GI NP to an MD. She hopped on the computer and had a conversation with a doc from the liver team + a recommendation for new MD for me to see within two minutes. So, yay! I will schedule that appointment ASAP.
She also gave me advice for leaving the NP. She said she would personally want to know why a patient decided to switch so she could understand and learn. I said I will do that but I'm not optimistic it will be well received, heh.
So that's that. Thank you again for your input and advice!

2023.05.30 16:17 HSVNYC Holding Off!

Im going to hold off on getting my Sadbe prescription filled for the following reason. I received the Shingles vaccine days before my diagnosis. Within a week of me receiving the Shingles vaccines it woke the virus out of its dormant state. I have been to several doctors and none feel the shingles vaccine id causing my symptoms. I’m going to look into going to a infectious disease specialist. I fear that Sadbe will not work for me. I don’t want to make my situation any worse. I honestly don’t know what to do. Because I’m tired of not knowing what’s causing my nerve pain and outbreaks.
Any input would be greatly appreciated! Today is not a good day for me 🙏🏽❤️!

Female, white, 50 years old, 5’9”, 210 lbs, no special meds.
I had my second Shingles vaccine over three weeks ago and I still have lingering pain at the injection site. If I stretch out my left arm to reach something or maybe roll over on my side while in bed, the sharp ache is significant. Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

Two podcasts I have enjoyed recently, First, The Social Radars, headed by Jessica Livingston and Carolynn Levy, co-founder and managing director of Y Combinator respectively. Jessica and Carolynn bring a lot of experience and trust with them so the entrepreneurs they interview open up about the realities of startups. Here is a great interview with David Lieb, creator of Google Photos and before that the highly successful failure, Bump.
I’ve also enjoyed the physician brothers Daniel and Mitch Belkin at The External Medicine Podcast. Here’s a superb primer on drug development from the great Derek Lowe.

2023.05.28 21:58 Spidey808imakilla 4x and 5x back on everything with visa prepaid debit cards

I have the Amex gold which gets me 4x at grocery stores. If I buy a visa prepaid debit card at Jewel-Osco for example to use for utility purchases, gas, etc, can I continue reloading it at the grocery store every time I run out of money on it so I get 4x each time?
Same example can be Chase Business Ink which gets 5x at Staples. Can buying a visa prepaid debit from there be reloaded in store to get the 5x?
I’d prefer prepaid debit cards over gift cards because cards like Walmart MoneyCard can be connected to budgeting apps like mint to make it easy to budget, whereas a gift card will have to be manually entered as cash and limited to one vendor. Plus some prepaid debit cards give you ADDITIONAL cashback on top of your credit card cash back.
Thank you

2023.05.28 19:46 isanomad I was told I can't get a shingles vaccine as a transplant patient.

I hope I'm not posting this to the wrong community...
So I'm almost 16 months post liver transplant. At one year post transplant, my hospital pushes healthy patients out to a GI located at one of their campuses. I have lost my beloved "team" of doctors who are focused on the transplant itself and then the first year of aftercare.
I am now being seen by a GI NP.
Last fall I got a message from my liver team advising anyone over the age of 19 should get the shingles vaccine series. I didn't heed that message soon enough and wound up with fucking shingles the month of April. Fortunately, it wasn't bad. My PCP gave me meds for it and it healed after a few weeks.
I decided to pursue the vaccine at this point. I am just 35 and don't want to pay out of pocket so I asked my NP to prescribe it. NP tells me I'm too young to get it and that I won't need it until I'm 50. I replied explaining I had gotten a message from the liver team saying that I should get it and reminded her I had already had shingles and do not want to keep getting it.
She stood her ground!!
I was dumbfounded. To me she might as well have said, "Enjoy [possibly] getting shingles for the next 15 years." I went and found the message I had received recommending all transplant patients have the vaccine and she said, "Okay, take that to your pharmacy and show them the message." Showing them a message won't do anything and I still have to pay $185 per shot.
I didn't know what to do. I know this isn't going to be well received but I messaged my previous provider with the liver team. I explained I was unable to get the vaccine and asked for guidance. Previous provider is amazing and contacted the ID department at the hospital so I now have an appointment for the vaccine and it's covered by insurance.
That was way too long, I know. I had to get it off my chest. It took more than a week of back and forth and she just ignored my last message entirely. I don't know if all of this is worth any recourse but at the end of the day a NP who works with transplant patients just told a transplant patient they don't need a shingles vaccine until they're 50. Yikes.

2023.05.28 14:21 Significant-Notice- Identify a Market Failure and Win Prizes!

The University of Chicago’s Market Shaping Accelerator, led by Rachel Glennerster, Michael Kremer, and Chris Snyder, is offering up to two million dollars in prizes for new pull mechanisms and applications.
Our inaugural MSA Innovation Challenge 2023 will award up to $2,000,000 in total prizes for ideas that identify areas where a pull mechanism would help spur innovation in biosecurity, pandemic preparedness, and climate change, and for teams to design that incentive mechanism from ideation to contract signing.
Participating teams will have access to the world’s leading experts in market shaping and technical support from domain specialists to compete for their part of up to $2 million prize during multiple phases. Top ideas will also gain the MSA’s support in fundraising for the multi-millions or billions of dollars needed to back their pull mechanism.
…Pull mechanisms are policy tools that create incentives for private sector entities to invest in research and development (R&D) and bring solutions to market. Whereas “push” funding pays for inputs (e.g. research grants), “pull” funding pays for outputs and outcomes (i.e. prizes and milestone contracts). These mechanisms “pull” innovation by creating a demand for a specific product or service, which drives private sector investment and efforts towards developing and delivering that product or technological solution.
One example of a pull mechanism is an Advance Market Commitment (AMC), which is a type of contract where a buyer, such as a government or philanthropic organization, commits to purchasing (or subsidizing) a product or service at a certain price and quantity once it becomes available. This commitment creates a market for the product or service, providing a financial incentive for innovators to invest in R&D and develop solutions to meet that demand.
The first round of prizes are $4,000 for an idea!
The submission template asks applicants to identify a market failure where the social value exceeds private incentives and where we know the measurable outcome we want to encourage (e.g. the development of a vaccine, capturing carbon out of the air, etc.). Submissions are accepted from individuals 18 years and older and organizations around the globe whose participation and receipt of funding will not violate applicable law.
See here for more.
