2023.06.02 16:35 Draakonys Let's have a talk - Guide to Choosing the Best Plex Server for You

Introduction:

I'm writing this tutorial to accommodate beginners and experienced users alike. If you would like to skip the introductory part and get right to the point, just look for the chapter entitled “My list of the best Plex Server devices”.
Next, I ask the subreddit admins not to remove this post and move it to the Builds megatread; have mercy.
Note: further down the line, I will refer to Plex Media Server as Plex Server and Plex Client Apps as Plex Client(s).

Plex Server vs Plex Client Overview:

When we talk about Plex, we cannot talk about the Plex Server without also talking about the Plex Clients. Both sides are equally important. However, they serve different purposes.
  1. Plex Server: This is the server component of Plex. It organizes and streams your videos, audio files, and photos from your computer or online sources to your client applications. The server software is available on various platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, certain models of NAS devices; heck, even Raspberry Pi can run Plex Server. Once installed, it catalogs your media, fetches metadata from the internet to provide additional information about your media such as cover art, summaries, ratings, etc. It also has the capability to transcode (convert on-the-fly) your media to a format that is compatible with the client device you're streaming to, making it very versatile. Finally, what makes a good Plex server is its ability to hardware transcode media content in as many streams as possible. That's what we're trying to do as cheaply as possible. Find more about the transcoding process here and know it by heart, it will be important later.
  2. Plex Clients: These are the applications you use to access your Plex Media Server. They can be installed on various devices like smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming devices (AppleTV, Nvidia Shield Pro, Roku, Amazon Fire TV Cube, etc.), gaming consoles, web browsers, and even desktop PCs. These clients fetch the content from the Plex Media Server and display it to the user. They allow you to stream your content, browse your libraries, create playlists, etc. Each Plex Client has a different set of supported video/audio codecs (formats). Why different set? Codec support depends on the underlying hardware, for example, the Nvidia Shield Pro will have a different set of supported video/audio codecs than the Amazon Fire TV Stick or LG Smart TV
To illustrate, if you install Plex Media Server on your home computer, and then install the Plex app on your smartphone, you could stream movies stored on your computer to your smartphone. The computer with the server software would be considered the Plex Server, and the smartphone with the app would be the Plex Client. The Plex Server does the heavy lifting (like file conversion) so the Plex Client(s) can have an optimized viewing or listening experience. To summarize, when we talk about Plex Clients, we are primarily talking about price and supported video/audio codecs (formats). The logic here is that the more expensive the client, the more audio/video codecs it supports. On the other hand, when we talk about the Plex servers, we talk primarily about price and performance (power). Similar to Plex Clients, the more expensive the Plex Server, the more powerful it will typically be. This relationship is not always straight forward and we will talk more about this later.

Simple Plex Setup

The simplest Plex setup would be one Plex Server and one Plex client. The simplest Plex setup is also a perfect Plex setup. If you only have one Plex Client, you can customize your audio/video media to perfectly match the codec(s) supported by that Plex Client. In such a setup, Plex Server will never need to do any transcoding because Plex Client will also play fully supported media formats. If your Plex server is never used for transcoding, then a Raspberry Pi can also be used as a good Plex server. If this is the case, why is hardly anyone talking about using Raspberry Pi as a Plex Server at all? Because what I call a simple and perfect Plex setup is just wishful thinking. We, end users, we always connect more then one Plex Client.

Realistic Plex Setup

A more realistic setup may include many different Plex Clients, like Plex Web Client, Plex TV Client, Plex Mobile/Table Client, and more frequently, Plex clients for the streaming box devices. Now remember, even if your current Plex Client device fully supports your media content, if you add another Plex Client device, it may or may not have the same codec (video/audio) support. Thus you may encounter the need for transcoding. This is no longer a simply process and devices like Raspberyy Pi will not be able to handle transcoding tasks.
This is the root of our problem and the main reason for this article. You should expect that some of your media files will require transcoding, and for video transcoding you need a machine capable enough of handling this process. More importantly, you want a machine that can hardware transcode your content, which means your Plex Server must have a dedicated hardware transcoding component. Likewise, there's a software transcoding process that requires pure CPU power, but you would be lucky to get 1-2 4K transcoding streams with modern Intel i7 or i9 CPUs. We want to avoid software transcoding, as hardware transcoding can do much more for a fraction of the power of software transcoding. For example, a 10th generation Intel i7 CPU can handle one 4K software transcoding task or 10+ 4K hardware transcoding tasks; that’s a huge difference. And before anyone comments, yes, we could make sure we only stream video/audio files that are fully (mostly) supported by all Plex Clients, but that would limit us in size, quality, and most importantly, the time it takes to make sure all the files meet the exact video/audio requirements.

Understanding Plex Server Requirements

Okay, so we've got a good handle on the importance of Plex Servers, what Plex HW transcoding is and why it's important. But now you might be asking, 'What do I need to make sure my Plex server can handle all this HW transcoding business?' Great question! Let's dive into that.Remember, your Plex server is the heart of your Plex ecosystem. It's where all your media lives, and it's the place that's doing all the hard work when it comes to streaming to your devices. When it comes to Plex server requirements, there are four main things to consider: CPU, GPU, power consumption, and storage.
To summarize, we’re looking for:

Desktop PC vs Mini PC vs NAS

My list of the best Plex Server devices:

Keep in mind that this is my list, and as such it is completely subjective. If you know of another device, mention it in the comments and I may add it to this list. Even better if you elaborate your view.
Note: Below links do not hold any tracking numbers or references.
  1. Intel NUC Mini PCs:Intel NUC mini PCs are often favored as Plex servers for several reasons. First, they offer relatively high-performance processors and support for more RAM compared to less expensive mini PCs like Beelink, allowing for smoother streaming and transcoding on Plex. Second, the build quality and reliability of Intel NUCs are generally regarded as superior. Third, Intel NUCs have good support for various operating systems, including those commonly used for servers. While other mini PCs can be cheaper, they may not offer the same level of performance and compatibility, which can affect the smooth running of a Plex server.Intel Nuc 11 NUC11ATKC4 - $208 (11th gen Celeron N5105 with 8GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD)Intel Nuc NUC11PAHi5 - $449 (11th gen i5 with 16GB DDR4 and 512 SSD)
  2. Beelink/Minisforum Mini PCs:To put it bluntly, when compared to Intel NUC, Beelink or MINISFORUM Mini PCs provide a similar performance at a potentially lower price point, yet still somewhat superior in quality to other cheap mini PCs from China. I'm a little split on recommending these devices; while I've never had any problems, I know some people who have. Personally I would go with Intel NUC just based on its reliability, but cheaper is cheaper.Last piece of advice, both Beelink or Minisforum come with pretty mediocre SSDs/NVMEs and RAM, and it's better (and even cheaper) to buy everything separately (barebone).Beelink N100 - $189 (12th gen Celeron N100 with 16GB DDR4 and 500GB SSD)Beelink Sei12 - $449 (12th gen i5 with 16GB DDR4 and 500GB NVME)Minisforum TH80 - $384 (11th gen i7 with 16GB of DDR4 and )
  3. Dell Optiplex Desktop PC:Any Dell Optiplex with at least 7th gen Intel CPU. I can say that many users often choose Dell Optiplex computers due to their robustness, reliability, and most important affordability. They come with a variety of configurations that can be customized to suit the needs of a Plex server, such as good processing power, ample memory, and storage. Additionally, their size makes them a practical choice for Plex.Refurbished DELL Optiplex 7060 - $179 (8th gen i5-8500 with 16GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD)Refurbished DELL Optiplex 5060 - $299 (8th gen i7-8700 with 16GB DDR4 and 500GB SSD)
  4. Synology DS423+, Synology DS920+, QNAP TS-453be NAS’Intel-based NAS devices are also preferred as good Plex servers for several reasons. You get all-in-one package with power-efficient 4K HW transcoding, built-in storage, and Linux-based OS.Synology DS423 - $370 (Intel J4125 Celeron with 2GB DDR4)Synology DS920 - Deprecated but still a fan-favorite. DS923+ switched to AMD-based CPU without iGPU so it should not be considered as a Plex Server.QNAP TS-464 - $589 (Intel N5105 Celeron + 11th gen iGPU with 8GB DDR4)
  5. Any custom-made Desktop PCWhile custom-made desktop PCs are not my favorite option, I cannot justify not giving them a shout out here. Yes, they are big, noisy, and power hungry, but when it comes down to it, they can serve as a Plex server just as well as any mini PC. Just make sure you’re either running at least Intel 7th gen CPU (although some modern AMD CPUs will also do) or older CPU paired with at least Nvidia RTX 1050 GPU or newer. Here's a benchmark for Nvidia GPU transcoding capabilities.
  6. Mac Mini (Intel or Arm-based)Mac has always been known to handle Plex Server very well.Older Intel-based Mac Minis are on the same level as Mini PCs, so what applies to Mini PCs also applies to Intel-based Mac Minis. On the other hand, even though M1 and M2 Macs are Arm-based, they offer excellent value for HW transcoding tasks. Both M1 and M2 are overkill for a Plex server and the only reason they are not higher on this chart is their price.Mac Mini 2018 - $402 (8th gen i5 with 8GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD)Mac Mini M1 - $430 (8GB memory and 256GG SSD)

Good Day! How are you doing? Did you have a pleasant day or night? Tell me about it! I'll make a cup of tea now. Would you like to have a tea, too? Or coffee? I moved on Friday so everything is still a bit chaotic, haha. I'm thinking about how to best organize things in my new apartment, maybe you'd like to help me?
I enjoy travel and have been to thirteen different countries so far. Lately I mostly travel to different cities that are close by! I love taking public transport and listening to music during it - then again, I pretty much always listen to music. Exploring is another great thing and my biggest passion is probably photography (especially when combining all these things).
I read a lot and enjoy writing, too, as well as editing photos I take. I am a bit of a creative person and am also very much into self-improvement! I am learning French, cook and bake and like to cycle a lot. There are lots of other topics that interest me, like urban planning, technology, history, horror, politics and... Just a whole lot more. I also have a fable for fancy lighting and radios!
So... If any of that sounds interesting to you, why not reach out? We might have a pleasant conversation or might even become friends! We could share stories, photos that we took, just talk about our days, jobs, studies, life... I am open to many things! All I ask for is for you to not be inappropriate and to put in a little bit of effort! I am looking forward to meeting you. :)

2023.06.02 16:31 LazySumo Poor little Michael, died alone in the desert crying not for his mommy, but for a joint... So sad. Anyways, I've been waiting for my very own RW story!

Owned the game (+ expansions) for a while now but it never really sank in... until last week.
Solid colony, 30+ hours into it, I'm handling most all challenges pretty well. For a nice moodlet boost, I have the leader speech at them. My leader gives an outstanding Leader Speech and a new colonist drops in. Michael, 5yo and the son of another colonist!! Excellent, let's do this.
So I assign Michael the same work/food/clothing assignments as everyone else and let him run around drawing on the floor. Not even 5 real world minutes later I see that, "Michael has a severe smokeweed addiction".
What.
Either the little bastard walked in with the addiction, or my pawns are growing some banging weed.
Argh. So I spent about thirty minutes trying to limit Mike's access to the devil's dancing lettuce and also prevent him from beating the absolute crap out of everything during tantrums. Two pawns ended up in medical because of his tantrums! Finally, I read up on how to handle addictions: Send 'em on a caravan to Detox-ville. Yay.
So that's how he died out there. Apparently he went on an eating binge or something but starvation in the desert is a bitch. Fuck 5 year olds, stay outta my weed little man.
Mom's neg moodlet was mostly run out by the time she stepped out of the biosculpting pod, just over a year younger, healthier and (I assume) nicely tanned.
This game rocks!!

2023.06.02 16:29 caughtatdeepfineleg A Crazy Mission to Create My Own Folk Record - One Man on the Line

Hi All,
Back in 2019 I was enjoying singing karaoke in pubs around London. It was all a bit of fun, but I decided one day to take some singing lessons to see if I could take things a little more seriously. In the course of taking lessons with my coach he asked me if I had ever considered doing some songwriting. I said, ‘but I don’t play an instrument’. ‘No problem’ he said, just come back with some ideas and I can work out the chords with you.
What to write about? I love 60s folk, particularly Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton, and country rock like the Byrds, but I am just a surveyor in London living a pretty normal life. I couldn’t write anything like that could I? That said, being out on the road and on the trains every day means I get to meet lots of people and know London like the back of my hand. So I started writing about that…
I came back the next week with a couple of songs in my head and some lyrics. Together we gradually put together a dozen songs over the course of the next few months. The next logical step was to try and record them…
With Ian, my producers help, we got some studio time and a handful of session musicians from his local area down in Hastings on the south coast. Negotiating the pandemic and the logistics of recording bits and pieces remotely, and then finally meeting to finalise the record, we had 10 songs all recorded and ready to go.
And here it is. In all, we have 12 different musicians on the record. Many from Hastings but also with some overdubs from a fiddler from Texas and a backing singer from Virginia. The project has been frustrating and expensive, but also really enjoyable and an example of what you can do with a bit of passion and perseverance.
As a vinyl fanatic I wanted to get this pressed. As you will probably be aware, this is no easy task with the lack of capacity at pressing plants, but I now have a small run of records pressed on some cool marble red vinyl. Many of the guys on the record have never been on a record before, so this is just as cool for them as it is for me.
I am selling these on my Bandcamp page for the cost price of £12 per record in the UK (A little more to cover postage elsewhere). If you take a listen and enjoy what you hear, I would be very grateful for your patronage. The record is also available on all your usual streaming platforms and for download.

2023.06.02 16:27 equilarian SMART Terminal / AXIS Logistics Park Update

Hi All -- it's been a hot minute. I've been super busy but wanted to check in and post an update. This is the email that was just sent out:

We are on social media!! Please like, share, and follow us on Instagram and Facebook. We have been to posting content. If you have any photos or videos you'd like us to share, please send them our way.
We've also started posting yard signs around town. If you see one, be sure to scan the QR code and follow the links to email the entire city council.

Here are some upcoming dates. Please be sure to mark your calendars to join us!

SMTX City Council Meeting
SMART/AXIS Is not on the agenda, but we will be there to speak during public comment. We invite you to join us either virtually or in person. Council will be discussing if they want to change the rules to Council Committees, which was prompted by the way the SMART Council Committee was handled.

Community Town Hall 1
What does bringing a massive Heavy Industrial Park to San Marcos mean for our community and neighbors? Join us for a brief presentation and discussion / Q&A about where we've been, where we are, and what Heavy Industrial looks like for taxpayers, property owners, the river, Reedville, Maxwell, and Martindale. (posting a graphic in the comments)

Community Town Hall 2
2nd Community Town Hall with similar topic to 1st meeting. We will be going into more detail about what you can do to help at the July 3rd Council Meeting and signing up for Public Comment.

SMTX City Council Meeting - 1st reading of Heavy Industrial Zoning
City Council will be voting on the 1st reading of zoning the SMART / AXIS land to Heavy Industrial. We need AS MANY people as we can get to SHOW UP for our community and the river to speak during public comment. This is not a public hearing, so the only opportunity we have to speak is during Public Comment. Details on how to sign up will be provided once the timing is closer. (posting a graphic in the comments)

SMTX City Council Meeting - 2nd reading of Annexation and HI Zoning. BOTH PUBLIC HEARINGS
City Council will be voting on the 2nd reading of annexation and zoning the SMART / AXIS land to Heavy Industrial (if not delayed for whatever reason). Both readings are PUBLIC HEARINGS, so we each get a total of NINE MINUTES to speak like the April 18th meeting. The more people we can get to show up, the better. The more we can get to speak during public comment and both hearings, even better!
The April 18th meeting went for a little over FIVE HOURS. Let's make it last longer than that and truly show council how much we care and don't want this zoning to pass.

Other things.... We have given away all 100 of our signs! Thank you to everyone who has one in their yard. We are hoping to get some larger signs out into the wild. If you have a solid and visible location please let us know. Some of you have already reached out but a reminder is always appreciated. If there are more folks who want smaller signs we will need to make another order as well. Please reach out if you'd like a small sign.

We are seriously considering getting an attorney but need people to commit to join a board to represent the community. If you'd like to donate to hire an attorney, the retainer fee is $5000. Please reach out if you'd like to donate or are interested in learning more about what being on a board looks like. The purpose of an attorney is because the Development Agreement has a contingency clause in it that takes the city's voting power away through contract zoning. It states that if the land is not zoned HI, then the city cannot annex. However, annexation MUST happen

We Need Help Spreading the Word We printed out A TON of flyers and still have A TON left. If you'd like to pass out flyers please reach out.

2023.06.02 16:24 EventideGamesStudio How Do Solo Game Developers Make Video Games?

Hello Everyone!
How Do Solo Game Developers Make Video Games?
TL;DR
The process solo developers go through to build a game breaks down into 6 phases: Idea, Prototype, Iteration, Polish, Release, and Post-Release. Each phase impacts the game in a specific way.
  1. Idea: Have an idea for a game to create.
  2. Prototype: Build a small, quick, playable version of the game that reflects the game’s core idea.
  3. Iteration: Assemble and expand on the game’s core gameplay loop.
  4. Polish: Integrate extra details that make the game pop and stand out.
  5. Release: Share the game for others to play.
  6. Post-Release: Expand, Maintain, or leave the game as is.
This post is a direct copy from my website here.
Let’s jump right into it!
How do solo game developers make video games? Game development is a large topic to cover with many nuances. Today, we’ll walk through the process that solo game developers go through to develop the game itself.
Why is this important for solo game developers to understand this process?
Like the gaming industry, you have limited resources. Your time. Your money. Your effort. Your skills. Unlike the industry though, you are the driving force behind your game. You are responsible for everything. Marketing. Business. Art. Engineering. Building the game itself is a tiny part of the process. But, it is the core of the entire process.
How does the gaming industry build games? It breaks down into 6 phases:
Where does the game fit into each of these phases? Which ones are specific to the game themselves? These are vague and we can do better. Let’s break it down further.
Here’s how each of the 6 game industry phases relate to the game itself:
  1. Idea -> Idea
  2. Pre-Production -> Prototype
  3. Production -> Iteration
  4. Post-Production -> Polish
  5. Release -> Release
  6. Post-Release -> Post-Release
Let’s walk through each one of these game phases.

Idea

The idea is the thought or scenario for a game. This is the backbone and vision for the game. The more catchy, fun, and original it is, the better. The goal of this phase is to have an idea that you build a game off of.
It can come from anywhere: video game, board game, personal background, an experience, your brain, random idea generator, AI, players, friends, a team, group of people, family, etc.
The game idea we are going to use throughout this blog is for a survival crafting game.

Prototype

A prototype is the smallest, quickest, playable version of the game that reflects the game’s core idea. The goal of this phase is two fold: Build the prototype and decide whether this prototype is worth growing into a full game.
Let’s elaborate on the definition of what makes up the prototype.
Smallest
Smallest meaning you only want the core game elements present in the prototype.
How do you do this?
Start by disassembling the game idea into its core gameplay loop. A gameplay loop contains the main tasks that the player will be doing throughout the game.
In a survival crafting game, the core gameplay loop would look like this: gather resources, craft items and weapons, defeating enemies, and repeat.
The next step is to break down each task into systems that make the task possible. Then, you build those systems.
For example, to gather a wood resource, what systems do you need to get wood? Here’s a few you would need:
  1. To get wood from a tree, you need a tree to exist. Build a tree.
  2. How do you interact with the tree? You need to hit it. Need a system to contain a way to trigger actions with the keyboard and mouse. Then, you need to use that system to trigger actions like hit. You need a system on a tree to recognize the hits from you.
  3. How does the tree know when to turn into wood? When it’s destroyed, after 3 hits. Then, you’ll need the tree to have a health system.
  4. How do you get to the tree? You need to move to it. Need a player controller for the player to move around.
  5. Once you get the wood, how do you pick it up? Need a pick up system to pick up nearby resources.
  6. Once you pick up the wood, where is it stored? Need an inventory system to track the wood you’ve picked up.
You continue this process with each task until you have gone through each one.
Quick & Playable
We want a fast way to play and test out these tasks and the game itself. The two ways to do this are with a physical prototype or with a digital prototype.
The physical prototype is building the pieces and components that make up the game. Then, using them to interact with rules (which are in your head) and the environment. This method is quick and tangible. Unfortunately, it doesn’t scale well. It doesn’t work for all games (like our survival crafting game). You’ll need to convert it into a digital format anyway for the rules, systems, etc.. It’s hard to share and get feedback. For these reasons, solo developers favor the digital prototype.
The quickest way to create a playable digital prototype is with a game engine.
What is a game engine?
It’s a software tool embedded with many features and functionality that you build your game on top of. A good way to think about it is with an analogy: a game engine to a game is what a foundation is to a house. They are convenient, powerful, and ready to use (little to no setup required).
If you are new to game development, use a game engine. Picking one is a whole topic in itself. Depends on:
  1. What matters to you (e.g. support, tutorials, asset store, open source)
  2. What kind of game you’re building (e.g. 2D vs. 3D, pixel art vs realistic)
  3. Your skills and experience you have (e.g. programming).
Do your research and pick one. Don’t think about it too long.
Reflects the game’s core idea
Are you building systems related to the game idea and the game you want to make? If so, keep it. Else, drop it.
Using our survival crafting game example, a system to transition from day to night and back is nice. But, the game doesn’t depend on it.
This also includes the art. Use simple images for 2D and basic shapes, like spheres, capsules and cubes, for 3D. Remember we want small, quick and playable. This also avoids scope creep, a process of adding features until the game it’s too big and too complex to finish.
When you finish the prototype, it’s going to feel underwhelming to play.
Why is that? We have expectations.
First, we have expectations of ourselves. We know we can do better.
Second, we have expectations based on the games we’ve played. We’ve had great experiences and memories playing these amazing feeling and looking games. This prototype is not that.
This is 100% normal.
Remember the end goal of the prototype phase: decide whether to transform this prototype into a full game.
Deciding this is up to you and your goals. Is it fun? Does it offer a different and unique experience? Play around with it. Explore the space of the game idea. Don’t be afraid to experiment. This is when you should share it with people and get their thoughts with a playtest. As this blog relates to development of the game itself, we are going to skip it right now and move on to the iteration phase.

Iteration

This is when you start to build up the game. You will spend a majority of your time here assembling and expanding the core gameplay loop. You’ll work on elements of the game that not only add breath but also depth.
For our survival crafting game example, during this phase you might do the following:
  1. Make more enemies (Zombies, Raiders, Mercenaries)
  2. Add more resources to gather (rock, metal)
  3. Make more weapons (swords, throwing knives, guns)
  4. Create more items (first aid kits, pickaxe, torch)
  5. Expand crafting to make interesting weapons and items (bottle + gas + cloth = molotov cocktail)
  6. Create puzzles to complete (Need key to unlock safe, solve riddle to find rare resources)
  7. Start a progression system or skill tree (Learn to craft more items, enhance melee abilities)
  8. Make more levels (dense green forest, snowy mountain, dry arid desert)
  9. Incorporate art assets (rocks, trees, buildings, first aid kits, swords, guns, zombies, birds, bears, etc.)
  10. Create a menu with settings (audio, video, gameplay)
  11. In-Game UI
  12. Day and Night Cycle
  13. Hunger, Stamina & Hydration system
  14. Interesting enemy AI (enemies maneuver in groups, find cover, attack with different weapons, reposition themselves)
  15. Narrative (why are you trying to survive?)
  16. Vehicles (Cars, motorcycles)
A key part of this phase (as the title suggests) is to iterate. Build. Test. Analyze. Repeat.
Build a system or improve an aspect of the game. Test to make sure it works. Analyze if it improves the game and aligns with the game’s idea. If it does, great! Move to the next thing. If not, why not? Was it not fun? Hard to use? Decide whether to improve it, shelve it or drop it.
With your time, effort and dedicated focus, the game will grow. It will morph into the game you are expecting. The game may scratch the itch but is not satisfying. It’s missing that extra umph that makes it special and impactful. This is where polish comes in.

Polish

Polish is the process of making the game look pretty, feel good to play, and elevate it to the next level. An important step before beginning the polish phase is that the game should be close to finished. Adding more content, systems and assets into the game puts you back into the iteration phase. Polish can be a distraction if done too early.
What do you do during this phase then? Integrate those extra details that make the game pop.
Using our survival crafting game example, this could include but is not limited to:
  1. Ambient sounds (water flowing, birds chirping)
  2. Music (tense music when an animal chases you, cheerful music when walking through a meadow, creepy music when walking around in the dark)
  3. Sound effects (firing a gun, chopping a tree, walking on rocky terrain, “oof” and “uggs” when taking damage)
  4. Particles (gun’s muzzle flash, wood chunks fly off of trees when hit, smoke rising from a fire)
  5. Post-processing (red bloody outline on screen when getting hit, chromatic aberration when feeling woozy)
  6. Screen shake (gentle sway when running, violent shake when taking damage)
  7. Visual effects (grenade explosions, x-ray vision)
  8. Animations (squash & stretch, player running, UI Transitions)
At this point, the game should look, feel and play like the game idea you had to begin with. If it doesn’t, that’s ok. Go back to the iteration phase to add content or keep adding polish. It’s rare to get it right the first time. Take a few passes through the iteration and polish phase to get it where you want it and are happy with it. Don’t be afraid to get feedback from others too.
Once you feel it’s ready, the next step is to put it into the player’s hands. Releasing it.

Release

Congrats, you’ve made it to the end! 🥳 Time to let the game shine and let your players play it. Releasing your game means to share it online for players to access it by put it on a marketplace.
For PC, a few locations are Steam, itch.io and Epic Games. For Mobile, there is the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. For consoles, there is Sony’s Playstation Store, Microsoft’s Xbox Store and Nintendo’s Store & eShop.

Post-Release

You finished the game. Where do you go from here? There are three options: Expand it, Maintain it, or Leave it as-is.
You can expand the game using updates or Downloadable Content (or DLC). This could be adding more to the game that you couldn’t fit or didn’t have time to put in before release.
Examples for our survival crafting game could be:
  1. Additional guns
  2. Cosmetic upgrades
  3. More game modes (like playing as an animal and hunting the player)
  4. A level editor
  5. Mod support
  6. New levels (like an abandoned metropolitan area.
You can maintain the game through bug fixes to improve the current player’s experience.
Examples could be:
  1. Prevent visual glitches
  2. Stopping enemies running through walls
  3. Fix the save system
  4. Prevent item duplication
  5. Fix the inventory
You could leave it as-is. The game is what it is. You get what you get and that’s it. No planned updates, fixes or DLC.
It depends on you, your goals and your time. It’s up to you on what to do next.

Summary

I hope this provided a sneak peek behind the curtain of game development.

Nobody is LAUGHING at you. Get over yourself. People are waking up that you are malignant abusive narcissist who at this point in her life needs residential treatment.
Believe us, for every person that wants to share old photos of you on this snark, there are 10 other people behind the scenes telling us of the stories of abuse YOU have perpetrated. We haven’t posted 1/2 the things we know about you.
So who can we believe??? Certainly not you. If you are having mental health symptoms you should seek treatment. Stop flying all over the world and maybe use that money on a 90 day treatment facility for the dually diagnosed. You seem to be hitting your rock bottom. Best wishes on your recovery.

2023.06.02 16:07 theoccurrence I want to start oral Minoxidil but I‘m scared of shedding because I have really long hair

Hi guys 👋
I‘m about to start trying oral minoxidil as Fin helped me to hold my hair over the last years and maybe even gave me a little regrowth but it‘s hard to tell because I have much longer hair now.
Long story short, my hair is about 30cm long (for Americans: about the diameter of your typical small Pizza) and it‘s barely alright with the right lighting and without wind. That‘s why I‘m wearing a man bun most of the time. I‘m afraid that it could become absolutely unpresentable after a Minoxidil shedding.
I‘m wavering, because I‘m not sure if I should risk it, that‘s why I mainly have two questions:
  1. How big is the chance to get a shed anyway (approximately)?
  2. Can I just stop when I get a shed?

2023.06.02 16:05 theverywetbanana Answers to Transport Portfolio Questions in Holyrood

I apologise to those who I have let down by not answering these questions. I have been rather busy, as some may have figured by my resignation as First Minister of Wales. I am now able to answer, and will do my best below.
Would the minister address whether this Government has plans for supporting the transition to greener shipping?
While I do not currently have plans to do this, I can of course work with the member to do so. Shipping as of now relies on fossil fuels, but i’m sure that scotland can work on this with the other members of the government
Would the minister support the introduction of licensing for carriers transporting fuels within Scottish ports?
I would support this and would be happy to work with the honourable member in doing so
Would the Government work to adopt similar global emission caps on vessels registered and partaking in activities in Scotland?
I am sure that we will be able to achieve this, as reducing emissions is always at the forefront of my policies
Does the government have plans to improve the regulatory framework surrounding the operations of ports in Scotland?
At this moment in time, I do not have such plans. Should this matter need a response, I will provide one
Could the Minister confirm whether this Government would support increased high speed rail connections between Scotland and the rest of the UK?
Personally, I would support this project, however this would come at a great cost to the taxpayer. I of course reside over Transport issues in Westminster also, and so have had a look at this before
As the Cabinet Secretary will no doubt be aware, the entirety of Scotland's trunk road system is the responsibility of the Scottish Government. The M8 through Glasgow is due to have a temporary 40mph speed reductions brought in between junction 25 & 25a and given that the M8 at this point is going through a built up area, would the Secretary consider making this speed restriction permanent, in the interest of promoting better urban air quality?
A review will be made into the feasibility of keeping these restrictions, however they will remain temporary for the time being
I asked the First Minister what he is doing about arranging a temporary provision for the currently out-of-action Corran Ferry which is essential to keeping local businesses running. Lacking an answer from them, I will direct the same question to the Transport Secretary. What are they doing to resolve this problem, and have they considered approaching the MoD for military assistance?
Military assistance will not be needed in this case. A replacement for the ferry would be far more suitable, and I can provide this in due course
Will the infrastructure strategy proposed in the PfG be completed this term?
It is likely that not all parts of the expected progress in my department will be made this term. Time constraints and other issues have led to this. They will of course be completed as soon as I am able
Does the Cabinet Secretary support the expansion of the Railways (Electrification) Act to Scotland?
Yes, I do. Electrification is our best way forward
How will the government improve transport access for rural and island communities?
As I have done in Wales, I will be encouraging the expansion of local transport networks, such as buses and small rail lines
Does the government have any prevailing plans in relation to the extension of high speed rail to Scotland?
Please see my answer above. This would be a great cost as of now, but I will continue to assess the feasibility
I would like to raise a crucial issue in Scotland to the Cabinet Secretary. In Scotland, on the A93, landslides can occur and block crucial access to roads and transport links. How will the government resolve to reach a solution to this evident ecological and isolationary issue?
This is not an ideal situation to face, however a more permanent solution must be found. I will be assessing the possibility of creating a new route for vehicles to use in the event of such incidents on the A93
Would the transport secretary agree with me that there is a case for a car ferry service between Helensburgh and Greenock, avoiding a 50 minute, 33 mile car journey?
I would agree with the member. Cutting journey lengths also cuts emissions, and so I would be happy to work with the member on rectifying this
What new projects are being developed to support commuter towns like Bathgate, in particular young professionals who commute into Edinburgh or Glasgow?
The expansion of scottish bus networks is something I would like to see, and so an increased investment into public transport will be my solution for this
The new government has continued to make promises regarding introducing cheaper fares for public transport across the country. In the Programme for Government, a general term of 'reform' is used, alongside discussions of free travel for under 18s and smartcard access. To ask the Secretary what those reform plans mean in detail?
These plans have since been released, and so the member can refer to the new legislation put forward by the First Minister
I would like to draw members attention to the dire state of road quality and safety in Scotland. In Edinburgh as an example, roads have deteriorated to such a state that not even pedestrian areas remain stable. It is imperative that the issue of potholes and other hazards are properly handled. So I therefore ask, how will this government ensure local governments properly manage this?
I will be increasing funding for the repaving and fixing of roads that are deemed to be unsafe for either road users or pedestrians. Local governments will receive a chunk of money to use specifically for fixing their lowest quality roads.
How much is the Government’s plans for lower fares and price caps costing the Scottish Treasury please, do they believe that money is being spent well?
I would like to remind the member that I am not the finance minister and so do not have the specific costings. This money is of course being spent well, as with all of this government’s projects
Has the Government recently assessed the suitability of the bus network across Scotland, and if so what are they doing about it? Have they been working with local authorities, and if so which ones?
I have assessed this issue. Bus networks need expanding and at a rapid rate, both to reduce emissions and to take more cars off of the road. I can update the member on the full details on a later date
What steps has the Transport Minister taken this term to increase the speed of our transition to a wholly green transport network?
As i have in Wales, I will be ensuring the full transition to electric buses and vehicles in the next 20 years. I hope this answer satisfies the member
Has the Transport Minister undertaken any work on coast paths and cycle routes this term, to support our move to a low carbon nation? If so, what exactly has been done?
I have not currently done so, however I can promise the member that work will be made on this
A major factor in accessibility to rail services especially in rural areas is the ability to access a bus link to the rail station, with a timetable that meets the train services. For many of my constituents, and of course many across Scotland, whether there is a suitable bus link to their nearest station can make the difference between using the train or driving their car and contributing to congestion and pollution. To ask the Secretary what steps they are taking to ensure as many residents as possible are linked with appropriate bus connections to their nearest train service? Most people in Scotland already have this connection available. If the member would like to inform me of the places where this is not possible, please reach out to me and I will find a solution with the local authority
Would Transport Scotland/Còmhdhail Alba consider a trial of new transport technologies such as responsive transport in rural and island communities like mine?
I would be happy to trail such technologies, as they will eventually be the future of rural transport
To ask the Secretary what they see the future of the port at Cairnryan and how it fits in with the rest of Scotland's transport network?
As of now, I have no plans for adapting or changing this port
Does the Cabinet Secretary agree that the Edinburgh Suburban Line should be reopened, potentially as a tram-train, to serve the good people of Gorgie, Craiglockhart, Morningside, Blackford, Newington, Duddingston, Craigmillar, Brunstane, Portobello, Piershill, and Abbeyhill, and to allow them to avoid the traffic of central Edinburgh?
I can certainly see why the member wishes to reopen the Edinburgh Suburban Line. I will support this while in office
Does the Cabinet Secretary agree that we should explore turning Scotland's urban motorways into boulevards, or perhaps even axe them?
No. This would make traffic far worse and would benefit almost nobody
What has this government done, and what will it do, for active travel?
Please see the latest legislation submitted by First Minister
What has the Minister done to reduce rail fares this term, if anything?
Please see my answer above
As mentioned by other members the motorways through the heart of the Glasgow city centre have had extreme speed restrictions placed on them. Walking through Glasgow around Charing Cross, you can see traffic backed up for as far as you can see. Obviously this is not how a motorway should function. To ask the Secretary if they consider the extension of motorways through Glasgow centre decades ago, in hindsight, a failure and mis-step in planning?
Perhaps it was. Traffic congestion is a severe issue in Scotland, and this government will work to fix this
To ask the Secretary how they believe links to the Islands, including via ferries, can be improved?
The islands are a unique situation, where not much else other than more ferries can fix transport links. The only thing I would be able to do is increase the frequency in ferry services through subsidies
The West Highland Line is at risk of disruption from rock fall due to its position in the terrain. Furthermore, indication of such an event is only provided by a decades old wiring system that is maintained by bodges upon bodges. To ask the Secretary if they will commit to improving safety on the line by looking into new technologies in this area?
New technologies will not fix this issue. Scotland has a rugged terrain, and there is little this government can do about it.

2023.06.02 16:04 RipMcStudly Rifftrax's MST3K DOTW Buyer's Guide: Future War (Season 10 Episode 4)

Try not to have a Dino Crisis during this week's action adjacent picture about dinosaurs and the men they stalk, Future War! Aliens in times past kidnapped humans to do their bidding, and now one of them has escaped. So we follow The Runaway (Daniel Bernhardt, Santa's Summer House, but also good movies and with a ton of behind the scenes credits as a fitness guru) as he bible quotes and kick boxes away from his pursuers in a movie that's going to constantly have you in utter disbelief that they made this thing. Together with former crackhead turned nearly nun Sister Ann (Travis Brooks Stewart, basically no film career), our hero must evade cyborg trackers and their dinosaur hounds to find safety. But the dinosaurs don't care who they have to kill to reach their goal, so a confrontation is inevitable.
But screw that, here's the good stuff. This is an awfully poorly made film from the guy who did the special dino effects in Carnosaur, giving him a direct link to Roger Corman. It stars Daniel Bernhardt, who has acted regularly over the years, including Santa's Summer House, but is now better known as a stuntman, trainer, and so forth. It also has a touch of Robert Z'Dar, whom we've seen in Soultaker and Samurai Cop, and if that's not enough for you, the "special appearance" actor listed in the credits, Mel Novak? He's in Samurai Cop 2, and has done multiple projects with Gerald Okamura from Samurai Cop. In other words, the cast is the most interesting thing about the film. The movie itself is poorly written, poorly acted, and does not quite Bert I Gordon level forced perspective work with its dino puppets. It's a rough one, though some people can find some charm in its earnest ineptitude. Not the director, though, he quit the movie before it was completed.
They don't quit the riff, early, thank goodness, though there's definitely a sense of irritation to it. Crow sets the bar pretty high during the opening credit roll when he refuses to acknowledge a credit, and to be fair, he wasn't out of line. This is a riff where they have to hold back their contempt for the movie, and for the most part they do, though this is one of those riffs where anyone who gets turned off by "fat guy" jokes may be unhappy. That aside, though, there's some really good stuff here. Bernhardt gives them the chance to make Van Damme jokes and accent jokes, and the whole nun angle gives the boys plenty of ammo as well. But whenever possible, they favor cracking on problems with the movie, like problems with the set, audio, or effects. I know some people would rather them aim for less obvious things, but there's at least one riff about a background door that had me rewinding to see what exactly there was to see about it, something that was kinda neat. In the end, you're pretty likely to be laughing regularly with this one, and that's before we count the things that happen outside the theater.
On the SOL, we start off by determining the nature of Ladyhood, before Pearl offers up psychedelic snacktime. After we witness the chilling effects of drugs on Bots, and the far more chilling attempts at Grateful Dead style synth rock by Bobo and Brain Dude, we're off to the theater. Next up, Servo channels ZZ Top to upgrade himself, only to invite hell onto himself via Gypsy. But on our next time through the SOL we slow down and somber up a bit, and take a little time to say thanks, even though it may not be necessary. Then, of course, we screw that nonsense, and take a pleasant diversion into the world of water with Corbett Crow's finest feature, his insanity and hyper fixation on ridiculous characters. Can't blame him, though, as Mike seems a little nutty in the final host segment, trying to get some laughs from strongly disapproving Bots with a novelty prosthetic, while Pearl has to end the episode by curtailing Bobo and Observer's musical dreams. A fitting end.
Combine some wacky outside of the theater stuff to some solid though mildly peeved riffing in it, and this is a GOOD episode of MST3K, and bound to rank higher with many fans, I'm sure.
Buy Future War if you're into: some notable riffed actors, a hilarious final fight with a great continuity issue, or some serious "man, there's no way they had permission to be in this building" vibes.
Skip Future War if you're not into: telling vs showing, some rough filmmaking, worse plot development, or dinosaurs that just don't dino very well.

2023.06.02 16:04 SauzaPaul Return of the Weekly Watch Report 2: Reddit's Revenge - June 2, 2023

Hey everybody, after a brief hiatus, the WWR is back. Drop your recent watches here, all are welcome.
Stray Cat Rock: Machine Animal (1970) 500 tabs of LSD, which the proceeds were intended to fund an American’s defection from the Vietnam War, are stolen back and forth between a girl gang on motorcycles and a boy gang on motorcycles in this, the 4th, and best so far entry in the Pinky series. Though the SCR movies is still a bit tame in comparison to the Pinky titles that would come in a few years, this was fun, and the lovely Meiko Kaji was cool as fuck in her trademark hat.
The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs – Season 5 Episode 4
The Babadook (2014) A single mom with a badly misbehaved child unintentionally releases an evil presence into her home when she reads a mysterious and sinister pop-up book called the Babadook. The boy insists the Babadook is in the house and promises his mother that he will protect her from it, but she thinks he’s using it as an excuse to misbehave. That is until she feels the presence herself and begins her decent into madness. Slow and scary with a very sympathetic lead and the creature never gets overexposed. I’m not sure I liked the ending, but nonetheless a standout debut from Aussie writer-director Jennifer Kent. (that’s my write-up from 10 years ago, I’ll keep it)
The Muthers (1974) Two ass-kicking female pirates infiltrate a prison camp to rescue their sister, and have a hell of a time escaping in this fun, Filipino Blaxploitation/WIP from Cirio Santiago. Starring Jeannie Bell (who provides most of the nudity), Roseanne Katon, Trina Parks, and Jayne Kennedy.
Mother’s Day episode, no guests. Muthers was a first-timer for me.
The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs – Season 5 Episode 5
The Mutilator aka Fall Break (1984) As a boy, Little Ed accidentally shot and killed his mom while cleaning Big Ed’s rifle collection, and was never forgiven. Now as a college student, Ed Jr is requested to do some chores at dad’s beach condo, and he invites his girlfriend and two other couples to join. Bad news is that Big Ed is waiting in the wings and wants to murder them all. Some nudity, good gore, and lots of North Carolina accents! A horrible and out of place song called “Fall Break” is played over the opening and closing credits, what a bad title for a slasher.
Possession (1981) Isabelle Adjani and San Neil's toxic marriage leads to gory murder, milk and blood secretion, and the most top-of-your-lungs screaming I've ever heard in a movie. Pretty difficult to describe what's going on here, but this should be seen at least once.
Another straight forward episode, I wasn’t looking forward to a re-watch of Possession, having seen it pretty recently, but JBB and Darcy always make it more enjoyable, even though Possession itself was in a 3 hour and 10 minute presentation!

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As
Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie.)
“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting.Maybe 'resetting' wasn't a good term.only
one can claim to be the most powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise
. "By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful.
There's nothing so wrong with “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.
It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie " could be retitled 'You're a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length.
In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.
“They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Movie Wakanda Forever (2022) FULLMOVIE ONLINE
