Do you think it's appropriate for athletes to use their social media platforms to promote political or social causes? Why or why not?
2023.06.03 10:28 ShadesOfRomeo Do you think it's appropriate for athletes to use their social media platforms to promote political or social causes? Why or why not?
| Sell your Selfies - Droll Pics media social app The appropriateness of athletes using their social media platforms to promote political or social causes is subjective and can depend on various factors. Here are a few perspectives to consider: Freedom of Expression: Athletes, like any other individuals, have the right to express their opinions and engage in discussions on political and social issues. Social media provides them with a powerful platform to reach a wide audience and share their perspectives. By using their influence, athletes can raise awareness, inspire change, and contribute to important conversations. A platform for Change: Athletes often have a significant following and influence, which gives them the potential to bring attention to social causes and effect positive change. By utilizing their social media platforms, they can shed light on issues such as inequality, discrimination, and injustice. Athletes can use their platforms to amplify marginalized voices and advocate for meaningful reforms. Responsibility and Impact: Athletes must recognize the impact and reach of their social media platforms. While expressing their views, it's important for them to consider the potential consequences, engage in respectful dialogue, and ensure they are well informed about the issues they are promoting. They should strive to maintain a balanced approach and promote inclusivity, understanding that their words and actions can have far-reaching effects. Personal Brand and Fanbase: Athletes often have a personal brand that extends beyond their athletic abilities. Some fans may follow athletes primarily for their athletic prowess and may prefer to separate sports from politics or social issues. Athletes should be mindful of their fanbase's diverse perspectives and carefully consider how their activism may affect their personal brand and relationships with fans, sponsors, or teams. Impact on Sports: The intersection of sports and politics can be complex. Some argue that sports should remain an apolitical space, focused solely on competition and entertainment value. Others believe that athletes have a responsibility to use their platforms to address social issues and advocate for change. The appropriateness of athletes promoting political or social causes on social media can depend on the specific context and the impact it has on the sports community. Ultimately, whether it is appropriate for athletes to use their social media platforms for promoting political or social causes is a personal decision for each athlete to make. It's important for them to carefully consider the potential impact, be knowledgeable about the issues they support, and engage in respectful dialogue while recognizing the influence they hold. 2023.06.03 07:55 TheLegendKeithDeroux The Indus Connection (Part 1 - India/Brahmin History): The Relationship Queen Victoria II has to Early Sikh Canadian Settler, Kesur Singh - Pierre Elliot Trudeau's Close Relationship to Indian President Indira Ghandi Before her Assassination & Operation Bluestar, Strengthened Indus Bonds (1897-1985)
| Disclaimer: The point of these stories is to uncover missed and hidden tales that many new generation Canadians are unaware of and overlook. The storied histories of people, ethnicities, neighborhoods are never told and for good reason. The information presented will be sourced and open to full discussion. This 3 Part series will uncover The Indus Connection - The Bind that Punjab (Informally Khalistan), India and Sri Lanka have to the Canadian Government, RCMP & CSIS. I've done my best to piece the significant information together in a timeline that allows the reader to understand these events clearer. (Information is cited; avoiding going full in depth) Kesur Singh was a Sikh officer of the 5th Cavalry who represented his regiment at Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee celebrations in London in 1897. This photo of him featured in The Navy and Army Illustrated of 10th Dec 1897. The description says 'He has on many occasions earned the praise of his superiors. He wears the medal and clasp for the Jowaki Expedition of 1877-78 and the medal with two clasps for Afghanistan (1878-80) where he was specially commended for devotion and courage on several occasions, and received the Order of Merit, and a special certificate from lord Roberts for his work at Sherpur. Kesur Singh & The First Sikh Canadian Settlers in Canada - Ties to the British Raj & How the Queen Elizabeth II Awarded him for his Valor in the British Indian Cavalry (1897) Kesur Singh, a Risaldar Major in the British India Army, is credited with being the first Sikh settler in Canada. He was amongst a group of Sikh officers who arrived in Vancouver on board Empress of India in 1897. They were on the way to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Sikhs found employment in laying the tracks of the Canadian Pacific Railway, in lumber mills and mines. Though they earned less than white workers, they made enough money to send some of it to India and make it possible for their relatives to immigrate to Canada. Indian Cavalry Passing the House of Parliament for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (1897) A notable moment in early Sikh history in Canada was in 1902 when settlers first arrived in Golden, British Columbia to work at the Columbia River Lumber Company. This was a theme amongst most early Punjabi Sikh settlers in Canada to find work in the agricultural and forestry sectors in British Columbia. Punjabi Sikhs became a prominent ethnic group within the sawmill workforce in British Columbia almost immediately after initial arrival to Canada. Punjabi Sikhs in Whitehorse, Yukon (April,1906) The early settlers in Golden built the first Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) in Canada and North America in 1905, which would later be destroyed by fire in 1926. The second Gurdwara to be built in Canada was in 1908 in Kitsilano (Vancouver), aimed at serving a growing number of Punjabi Sikh settlers who worked at nearby sawmills along False Creek at the time. The Gurdwara would later close and be demolished in 1970, with the temple society relocating to the newly built Gurdwara on Ross Street, in South Vancouver. As a result, the oldest existing Gurdwara in Canada today is the Gur Sikh Temple, located in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Built in 1911, the temple was designated as a national historic site of Canada in 2002 and is the third-oldest Gurdwara in the country. Later, the fourth Gurdwara to be built Canada was established in 1912 in Victoria on Topaz Avenue, while the fifth soon was built at the Fraser Mills (Coquitlam) settlement in 1913, followed a few years later by the sixth at the Queensborough (New Westminster) settlement in 1919, and the seventh at the Paldi (Vancouver Island) settlement, also in 1919. Early Sikh pioneers also settled in the Abbotsford area in 1905 and originally worked on farms and in the lumber industry. By 1906, there were about 1,500 Sikh workers living in Canada, among about 5,000 East Indians in total. Although most of the immigrants from South Asia at the time were Sikhs, local ignorance of Eastern religions led to them frequently being assumed to be Hindus. About 90% of these Sikhs lived in British Columbia. While Canadian politicians, missionaries, unions and the press were opposed to Asian workers. British Columbia industrialists were short of labor and thus Sikhs were able to get an early foothold at the turn of the 20th century in British Columbia. As with the large numbers of Chinese workers already present in Canada, many white workers resented those immigrants and directed their ill-will toward the Sikhs, who were easily recognized by their beards and turbans. Punjabis were accused of having a caste system, an idea that goes against the foundations of Sikhism. They were portrayed as being riddled with trachoma and as being unclean in general. To strengthen these racist characterizations, a song called White Canada Forever was created. All this eventually led to a boat of Sikhs arriving in Vancouver being sent to Victoria. In 1907, the year that Buckam Singh came to British Columbia from Punjab at the age of fourteen, Punjabis were forced to avoid the Anti-Oriental Riots of 1907 by staying indoors. Punjabi & Canadian Boy Drinking Soda (1972) Most of the Sikhs in Canada in 1907 were retired British army veterans and their families. These Punjabis had proved themselves as loyal soldiers in the British colonies in Asia and Africa. However, the Canadian Government did not prevent the use of the illegal scare tactics being used to monitor immigration and prevent Sikhs from seeking employment, and this soon resulted in the cessation of all Indian immigration to Canada. The Canadian Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier claimed that Indians were unsuited to life in the Canadian climate. However, in a letter to the viceroy, The Earl of Minto, Sir Wilfred voiced a different opinion, stating that the Chinese were the least adaptable to Canadian ways, whereas Sikhs, which he mistakenly referred to as Hindus, were the most adaptable. This sentiment changed after Buckam Singh's role in World War 1, which enabled more Sikhs to migrate to Canada. Takeaways During this Period: - The Immigration Act, 1910 came under scrutiny when a party of 39 Indians, mostly Sikhs, arriving on a Japanese ship, the Komagata Maru, succeeded in obtaining habeas corpus against the immigration department's order of deportation. The Canadian Government then passed a law intended to keep labourers and artisans, whether skilled or unskilled, out of Canada by preventing them from landing at any dock in British Columbia. As Canadian immigration became stricter, more Indians, most of them Sikhs, travelled south to the United States of America.
- The Komagata Maru Incident involved the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru, on which a group of people from British India attempted to immigrate to Canada in April 1914, but most were denied entry and forced to return to Budge Budge, Calcutta (present-day Kolkata). There, the Indian Imperial Police attempted to arrest the group leaders. A riot ensued, and they were fired upon by the police, resulting in the deaths of 22 people.
- Buckam Singh - Buckam Singh enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the spring of 1915. Buckam Singh was one of the earliest known Sikhs living in Ontario at the time as well as one of only 9 Sikhs known to have served with Canadian troops in the First World War. Private Buckam Singh served with the 20th Canadian Infantry Battalion in the battlefields of Flanders during 1916. Here, Buckam Singh was wounded twice in battle and later received treatment at a hospital run by one of Canada's most famous soldier poets the Doctor Lt. Colonel John McCrae. While recovering from his wounds in England, Private Buckam Singh contracted tuberculosis and spent his final days in a Kitchener, Ontario military hospital, dying at age 25 in 1919. His grave in Kitchener is the only known First World War Sikh Canadian soldier's grave in Canada. Despite being forgotten for ninety years and never getting to see his family again, Buckam Singh is now being celebrated as not only a Sikh hero, but a Canadian hero.
Legacy of Buckam Singh (1972) The Events Leading Up To an Independent Punjab State Precursor to Operation Bluestar - Post Independence Period of India (1956) Punjabi Suba Speeches (1956) The Punjabi Suba Movement After Independence from British Rule (1956) The Punjabi Suba movement was a long-drawn political agitation, launched by Punjabi speaking people (mostly Sikhs) demanding the creation of autonomous Punjabi Suba, or Punjabi-speaking state, in the post-independence Indian state of East Punjab. The movement is defined as the forerunner of Khalistan movement. Borrowing from the pre-partition demands for a Sikh country, this movement demanded a fundamental constitutional autonomous state within India. Led by the Akali Dal (a centre-right Sikh-centric state political party in Punjab, India. The party is the second-oldest in India, after Congress, being founded in 1920.), it resulted in the formation of the state of Punjab. The state of Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh were also created and some Pahari-majority parts of the East Punjab were also merged with Himachal Pradesh following the movement. The result of the movement failed to satisfy its leaders due to regions in Northern Haryana with Punjabi speaking and Sikh populations like Jind, Karnal, Ambala, Fatehabad and Sirsa being left out of Punjab. Many Sikh leaders saw this as falling short of the promise of a fully autonomous Sikh State that they felt was promised to them by Nehru and Gandhi in exchange for joining the Indian Union. In the 1950s the Punjabi Suba movement for linguistic reorganization of the state of Punjab and status for the Punjabi language took place, which the government finally agreed to in 1966 after protests and recommendation of the States Reorganization commission. The state of East Punjab was later split into the states of Himachal Pradesh, the new state Haryana and current day Punjab. The process of Sikh alienation from the national mainstream was set in motion shortly after Independence due to the communalism of national and regional parties and organization including the RSS, Jan Sangh, and the Arya Samaj, exacerbated by Congress mishandling and local politicians and factions. According to Indian general Afsir Karim, many observers believed that separatist sentiments began in 1951 when Punjabi Hindus disowned the Punjabi language under the influence of radical elements, and "doubts on the concepts of a Punjabi Suba" created mutual suspicion, bitterness, and further misunderstanding between the two communities. The 1966 reorganization left the Sikhs highly dissatisfied, with the unresolved status of Chandigarh and the distribution of river waters intensifying bitter feelings. While the Green Revolution in Punjab had several positive impacts, the introduction of the mechanized agricultural techniques led to uneven distribution of wealth. The industrial development was not done at the same pace of agricultural development, the Indian government had been reluctant to set up heavy industries in Punjab due to its status as a high-risk border state with Pakistan. The rapid increase in the higher education opportunities without adequate rise in the jobs resulted in the increase in the unemployment of educated youth. The resulting unemployed rural Sikh youth were drawn to the militant groups, and formed the backbone of the militancy. After being routed in 1972 Punjab election, the Akali Dal put forward the Anandpur Sahib Resolution in 1973 to address these and other grievances, and demand more autonomy to Punjab. The resolution included both religious and political issues. It asked for recognizing Sikhism as a religion It also demanded that power be generally devaluated from the Central to state governments. The Anandpur Resolution was rejected by the government as a secessionist document. Thousands of people joined the movement, feeling that it represented a real solution to demands such as a larger share of water for irrigation and the return of Chandigarh to Punjab. The 1978 Sikh-Nirankari clashes had been within the Sikh community, but the pro-Sant Nirankari stance of some Hindus in Punjab and Delhi had led to further division, including Jan Sangh members like Harbans Lal Khanna joining the fray, who, in a protest against holy city status for Amritsar, raising inflammatory slogans like "Kachha, kara, kirpan, bhejo inko Pakistan" ("those who wear the 5Ks (Sikhs), send them to Pakistan"), led to aggressive counter demonstrations. Prime Minister of Canada, Pierre Elliot Trudeau Visits India; Prime Minister of India, Indira Ghandi Visits Canada - The India-Canada Bonds Stay in Tact (1971) Indira Gandhi of India and Pierre Trudeau of Canada-walk through the lobby of the new $3 million Shaw festival Theatre at Niagar-on-the-Lake last night during intermission. After the play; Mrs. Gandhi joined Trudeau and his wife; Margaret; on state for presentation of a plaque. Prime minister Pierre Trudeau touched down in India. For five days in January, 1971, Pierre Elliott Trudeau toured the country, rode a camel, petted a bullock, went up the Ganges and into a locomotive factory, visited the tombs of Indian notables, saw the Taj Mahal and wore a hat that would have made a Rajput proud. He then sat down with the emerging, redoubtable Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to discuss the state of the world and the sorry state of Canada’s economic relationship with India. Even nuclear weapons were discussed in 1971 with the Canadian prime minister in a press conference opining “there is no expressed desire on (the Indian) part to explode such a (nuclear) device nor I believe the technological ability to do so.” Three years later, in May 1974, the Indians did explode such a device – cheekily codenamed Smiling Buddha – in the Rajasthan desert, using plutonium from the research reactor Canada had built for it in 1956 for peaceful purposes. The bilateral relationship dropped into a diplomatic pit with every leader since expressing sorrowful but hopeful words that things would improve. The one issue not on Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s agenda was anything to do with the Punjab and Sikhs. At the time, both were good news stories. The Punjab, home to most Sikhs, was the centre of an agricultural Green Revolution with new strains of wheat moving India from a food-deficient country to one of self sufficiency, with exports contemplated. Economically, Sikhs were the main beneficiaries and their biggest political problem was whether or not their beards met the requirements of flying fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. The emergence of India as a legitimate and serious geopolitical counterweight to China, not only in Asia but globally, has dramatically changed the bilateral agenda. Over the years, very little energy was expended by either India or Canada to put the relationship on a footing reflective of this changed status. There have been large and small bumps on that road since. Sikhs have been a significant part of the Canadian mosaic since the late 19th century. Their numbers increased dramatically with the mid-1970s changes to the Immigration Act and today they represent close to half of the 1.2 million Canadians with ancestry from the subcontinent. Their wealth, energy and self-deprecating humour, along with a monotheistic theology, were dominant features and over time the use of Sardar and Sardarji became terms of appreciation for the community as a whole. Towards the end of European colonial dominance, they were a military mainstay of the British Raj. As one Indian researcher wrote, “the success-story of the Sikh community as a whole has taken the form of a deep-rooted anxiety in the collective minds of the non-Sikh majorities especially the Hindus of India.” The present prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, has achieved political success exploiting this and other anxieties alongside the promotion of Hindu ascendency. IMPORTANT EXCERPT BY CSE AFTER AIR INDIA BOMBING (1985):India’s government knows more of what goes on in the Canadian Sikh community than the combined forces of the RCMP, CSIS and CSE. This was evident in the aftermath of the 1985 Air India bombings and it was rare if a visit by the Indian High Commissioner (he a Sikh) to the Department of Foreign Affairs did not provide details on some nefarious action within the community. The Path to Operation Bluestar: How the Assassination of Indira Ghandi led to the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots (Black November) Deceased Sikhs - Result of the Clashes The Sikh-Nirankari clashes - Precursor to Operation Bluestar (1978) The 1978 Sikh-Nirankari clash occurred between the Sant Nirankari Mission (An Indian backed Sikh Organization) and Sikhs of Damdami Taksal and Akal Kirtani Jatha on 13 April 1978 at Amritsar, Punjab, India. Sixteen people—thirteen traditional Sikhs and three Nirankari followers—were killed in the ensuing violence, occurring when some Akhand Kirtani Jatha and Damdami Taksal members led by Fauja Singh protested against and tried to stop a convention of Sant Nirankari Mission followers. This incident is considered to be a starting point in the events leading to Operation Blue Star and the 1980s insurgency in Punjab. Operation Bluestar - Indhira Ghandi's Plot to Eliminate Akhan Kirtani Jatha & Damdami Taksal Leaders (1984) Visual Depiction of Operation Bluestar (Preliminary Footage - AP News) Operation Blue Star was an Indian military operation carried out between 1 and 8 June 1984, ordered by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to remove religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers from the buildings of the Harmandir Sahib complex in Amritsar, Punjab. In July 1983, the Sikh political party Akali Dal's President Harcharan Singh Longowal had invited Bhindranwale to take up residence in Golden Temple Complex. Bhindranwale later on made the sacred temple complex an armoury and headquarters. In the violent events leading up to the Operation Blue Star, the militants had killed 165 Nirankaris, Hindus and Nirankaris, even 39 Sikhs opposed to Bhindranwale were killed. The total number of deaths was 410 in violent incidents and riots while 1,180 people were injured. Counterintelligence reports of the Indian agencies had reported that three prominent figures in the operation, Shabeg Singh, Balbir Singh and Amrik Singh had made at least six trips each to Pakistan between the years 1981 and 1983. Intelligence Bureau reported that weapons training was being provided at gurdwaras in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Soviet intelligence agency KGB reportedly tipped off the Indian agency RAW about the CIA and ISI working together on a Plan for Punjab with a code name "Gibraltar". RAW from its interrogation of a Pakistani Army officer received information that over a thousand trained Special Service Group commandos of the Pakistan Army had been dispatched by Pakistan into the Indian Punjab to assist Bhindranwale in his fight against the government. A large number of Pakistani agents also took the smuggling routes in the Kashmir and Kutch n for three days ending on 8 June. A clean-up operation codenamed as Operation Woodrose was also initiated throughout Punjab. The army had underestimated the firepower possessed by the militants. Militants had Chinese made rocket-propelled grenade launchers with armor piercing capabilities. Tanks and heavy artillery were used to attack the militants using anti-tank and machine-gun fire from the heavily fortified Akal Takht. After a 24-hour firefight, the army finally wrested control of the temple complex. Casualty figures for the Army were 83 dead and 249 injured. According to the official estimate presented by the Indian government, 1592 were apprehended and there were 493 combined militant and civilian casualties. High civilian casualties were attributed by the state to militants using pilgrims trapped inside the temple as human shields. According to Indian army generals, it was "doubtful" that Bhindranwale had any assurance of help or promise of asylum from Pakistan, as he made no attempt to escape with any associates, in additions to traditions of martyrdom. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale (Damdami Taksal Leader - Killed) Assassination of Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi By Her Sikh Bodyguards (1984) Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated at 9:30 a.m. on 31 October 1984 at her residence in Safdarjung Road, New Delhi. She was killed by her bodyguards. Satwant Singh and Beant Singh in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star, an Indian military action carried out between 1 and 8 June 1984 ordered by Indira Gandhi to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from the Golden Temple of Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab. The collateral damage included the death of many pilgrims, as well as damage to the Akal Takht. The military action on the sacred temple was criticized both inside and outside India. https://preview.redd.it/x3ee2xdzrq3b1.jpg?width=440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=438619a4afceb2005ca06799dc057de538203653 The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots (Sikh Genocide/Black November) in Response to Indian Prime Minister Indira Ghandi's Assasination - 17,000 Sikhs Dead [This Event Gave Rise to the Punjabi Insurgency Movement, Babar Khalsa & Flight Air India 182 Bombing in Canada] The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots - Resulted in 17,000 Deceased Sikhs The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, also known as the 1984 Sikh Genocide, 1984 Sikh Massacre or Black November, was a series of organized pogroms against Sikhs in India following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Government estimates project that about 2,800 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and 3,350 nationwide, whilst independent sources estimate the number of deaths at about 8,000–17,000. The assassination of Indira Gandhi itself had taken place shortly after she had ordered Operation Blue Star, a military action to secure the Harmandir Sahib Sikh temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab, in June 1984. The operation had resulted in a deadly battle with armed Sikh groups who were demanding greater rights and autonomy for Punjab and the deaths of many pilgrims. Sikhs worldwide had criticized the army action and many saw it as an assault on their religion and identity. In the aftermath of the pogroms, the government reported that 20,000 had fled the city; the People's Union for Civil Liberties reported "at least" 1,000 displaced persons. The most-affected regions were the Sikh neighborhoods of Delhi. Human rights organizations and newspapers across India believed that the massacre was organized. The collusion of political officials connected to the Indian National Congress in the violence and judicial failure to penalize the perpetrators alienated Sikhs and increased support for the Khalistan movement. The Akal Takht, Sikhism's governing body, considers the killings a genocide. In 2011, Human Rights Watch reported that the Government of India had "yet to prosecute those responsible for the mass killings".According to the 2011 WikiLeaks cable leaks, the United States was convinced of Indian National Congress' complicity in the riots and called it "opportunism" and "hatred" by the Congress government, of Sikhs. Although the U.S. has not identified the riots as genocide, it acknowledged that "grave human rights violations" occurred. In 2011, the burned sites of multiple Sikh killings from 1984, were discovered in Hondh-Chillar and Pataudi areas of Haryana. The Central Bureau of Investigation, the main Indian investigative agency, believes that the violence was organized with support from the Delhi police and some central-government officials. After 34 years of delay, in December 2018, the first high-profile conviction for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots took place with the arrest of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court. Very few convictions have taken place in the pending 1984 cases, with only one death penalty conviction for an accused, Yashpal in the case of murdering Sikhs in the Mahipalpur area of Delhi. 2023.06.03 05:22 Swimming-Reality3294 Should i apologize?
Two things-
First - I decided to go back to school in my 30s and yake some classes at a community College and started working through some long ignored life and emotional issues. However, one day i was in the school bathroom and was there all day thinking i was going to die because i had been having physical issues with using the restroom.
So i was in the stall all day. (Found out later i was lactose intolerant and had been not drinking enough water for months.)And then the door kept getting hit by other students telling me to leave and i had no idea why i couldn't be done. So i randomly picked a guy to look at me to show im busy in here as i cleaned myself up which is revolting and embarrassing..as i was doing it but i was frozen with embarrassment..as was he. And he ran out. And i fresked out after what i had done. I saw the guy later and realized i knew him from a class. We both were in shock and ran the other way. I always wished i could apologize that day but everything was so out of character i didn't know where to begin..plus were both musicians, so chances are well work together at some point...
This was 8 years ago. Ive been considering finding this guy and pouring my heart out to apologize in some way.
I dont know if i even should..it was so gross and weird and embarrassing.
Im lost.
Two- I helped out a photo buddy on a senior picture shoot...were both in our 30s This girl was very attractive and afterwards everyone had a crush but obviously not interested or available.
Well i found her again during this above period to create more havoc i guess. I told her everything and she was Disgusted with me.
I want to apologize to her now but idk how.
What should i do with both of these?

2023.06.03 04:59 PSSD_Kara Dear Fired NEDA Helpline Workers: NEDA was never about helping people as the priority. It's to prop up the for-profit eating disorder therapy industry...
I saw this blog, and I just had to comment because my PTSD that required significant self-paid additional therapy to recover from, is from a therapist and a psychiatrist at an eating disorder program (that is considered reputable). I was also recklessly put on multidrug cocktails of psychiatric drugs that resulted in long term sexual dysfunction and additional (diagnosed and proven) PTSD. The truth is that that organizations like NEDA were never truly about helping people (same for NAMI, Autism Speaks, etc). Their real purpose is astroturfing so that the maximum number of people are funneled into the for-profit eating disorder residential, PHP and IOP programs as possible. These programs are upwards of a THOUSAND dollars a DAY which is covered by some insurances no questions asked, some with prior authorization and some insurances will deny these programs. NEDA receives significant donations and funding from these programs, which is a publicly accessible fact and on their website.
The social media culture around eating disorders also tends to glorify this for-profit industry as a badge of legitimacy and for those emotionally neglected in childhood, all of the "attention" is intoxicating and subconsciously can fuel some women "staying sick" as a way of holding on to that attention and caring which we are all pre-programmed as infants to seek from a caregiver figure. Additionally, eating disorders are primarily caused by social factors (dysfunctional families, toxic relationships, porn/sex obsessed culture, etc) which NEDA doesn't do anything to fundamentally solve. Eating disorders can be medically serious and on a medical level, the issue is not wisely DIY, people should have a competent doctor that can take the risks associated with B/P and "refeeding" as well as complications seriously. That being said, the psychological aspect of recovery is unfairly dominated by the eating disorder industry. What they don't tell people is how many eating disorder sufferers cycle in and out of programs, sometimes on a WORSENING trend due to the toxic and poisonous narratives that the eating disorder industry likes to push such as the idea from Life After Ed (if it works for the author, cool, but it's a disempowering idea) that the "Ed" is like a separate voice in someone's head and the only solution is to give eating disorder professionals all your money forever. Oh and you don't just get one, you are supposed to maintain a relationship with a nutritionist, a therapist AND a psychiatrist... for years and years (that's like $2000 a month billed in appointments alone). Anecdotally, people find psychological and spiritual recovery in many ways. Some find support in things that are actively damaging to others (for example, some people really resonate with yoga, going vegan, religion/spirituality etc, while others find this actually fuels their eating disorder and obsessions.
Most women I met in these programs had been systematically brainwashed to act like helpless children and believe that they had no power over changing their lives, other than to depend on the therapist to inform what they were allowed to think, feel, do, say, eat and believe. Due to the possible medical danger of eating disorders, this is evil and causes deaths when some women understandably spiral and relapse after leaving the structure of the program. Some go to programs over and over again. Anti-science philosophies are pushed in these programs as well (the idea that there are "no bad foods", when other eating support programs like Eating Disorders/Overeaters Anonymous recognize the known "trigger" element of white flour and sugar to kick off the urge to binge and/or purge).
I could really go on and on, because this is a pet topic for me. I might post a book list later. Nowadays I do eat regularly and healthfully! I recovered in spite of the ED industry, not because of it. -Mod Kara
A Union Busting Chatbot? Eating Disorders Nonprofit Puts the 'AI' in Retaliation Labor Notes A Union Busting Chatbot? Eating Disorders Nonprofit Puts the 'AI' in Retaliation
May 04, 2023 / Abbie Harper. Picured: Four members of Helpline Associates United on Zoom.
Two weeks after they voted to unionize, workers at the National Eating Disorders Association were told their jobs were being replaced by a chatbot. Photo courtesy of author
Is artificial intelligence a new union-busting tool? For the leadership at the National Eating Disorders Association, it would seem the answer is yes.
Two weeks after the Helpline Associates at the NEDA won our vote to unionize and join Communications Workers (CWA) Local 1101, NEDA interim CEO Elizabeth Thompson made a surprise announcement: the Helpline was being eliminated and replaced with a chatbot. Every newly unionized employee would be jobless as of June 1.
The National Eating Disorders Association is the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to eating disorders. Its programs and services raise awareness, build communities of support and recovery, fund research, and put essential resources into the hands of those in need. The NEDA Helpline, the organization’s only direct service arm, provides hundreds of thousands of people every year with person-to-person support via phone, online chat, and text, staffed by a small team of full-time associates with the help of hundreds of volunteers.
Three out of four of us in Helpline Associates United are former NEDA Helpline volunteers. Some of us have personally recovered from eating disorders and bring that invaluable experience to our work. All of us came to this job because of our passion for eating disorders and mental health advocacy and our desire to make a difference. Our primary responsibility as Helpline Associates is training and supervising Helpline volunteers, in addition to interacting with contacts ourselves. This includes monitoring every emergency situation that arises on the Helpline, and taking over the conversation if needed.
ONE EVERY 52 MINUTES
Thirty million people in the United States have an eating disorder, and 10,200 people a year will die as a direct result of an eating disorder; one person every 52 minutes. The Covid-19 pandemic had a devastating impact: the number of new diagnoses and the severity of symptoms experienced increase at alarming rates. Since the start of the pandemic, the Helpline has reported a 107 percent increase in contacts. Suicidal, self-harm and child protective services calls nearly tripled.
That’s why the Helpline and the humans who staff it are so important.
While NEDA has informed its staff and volunteers of their decision to end the Helpline program, they have yet to make a public announcement that they are shuttering this vital service. Unfortunately, the specifics have not been shared with us, but operations have started winding down, and it looks like service will be eliminated beginning June 1. Our Helpline volunteers, to whom this work was extremely meaningful, have been presented with other opportunities to volunteer with NEDA, including being “testers” for their chatbot replacement (Tessa, a “wellness chatbot”), but not with an opportunity to provide one-on-one peer support.
NEDA claims this was a long-anticipated change and that AI can better serve those with eating disorders. But do not be fooled—this isn’t really about a chatbot. This is about union busting, plain and simple.
RETALIATION
Prior to winning union recognition and affiliation with CWA, we petitioned NEDA management last summer for a more equitable, dignified, and psychologically safe workplace. We asked for adequate staffing and ongoing training to keep up with our changing and growing Helpline, and opportunities for promotion to grow within NEDA. We didn’t even ask for more money.
After NEDA refused to make meaningful changes, we collected a super-majority of signed authorization cards and asked for voluntary recognition of our union around Thanksgiving. When NEDA refused, we filed for an election with the National Labor Relations Board and won on March 17. Then, four days after our election results were certified, all four of us were told we were being let go and replaced by a chatbot
Helpline Associates United has filed unfair labor practice charges at the National Labor Relations Board over NEDA management’s refusal to engage in good faith bargaining and their retaliation against workers looking to form a union. We plan to keep fighting. While we can think of many instances where technology could benefit us in our work on the Helpline, we’re not going to let our bosses use a chatbot to get rid of our union and our jobs. The support that comes from empathy and understanding can only come from people.
Abbie Harper is a member of Helpline Associates United.

2023.06.03 04:27 Jaime_Horn_Official Why Do Some Leftists Defend Antitheism?
I am being completely genuine when I ask; antitheism is to me utterly antithetical to leftism. Consider the most prominent antitheists on the planet: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, etc... All are ardent capitalists who have advocated lustfully for war in the Muslim World because they have all been quite open about the fact that they want to see as many Muslims slaughtered as possible, with Harris attempting to back-track in recent years, but Hitchens defending the Iraq War to his dying breath—his death being one that I certainly did not mourn for the record. Yet, everytime I describe antitheism as an inherently evil, genocidal ideology, I always receive criticism from at least one leftist who derides me for engaging in "identity politics". I don't understand why it is so difficult for people to grasp that the demonization of religious people serves as a catalyst for violence.
Some of the most prominent leftists in the community from Noam Chomsky, to Hasan Piker, to the late, great Michael Brooks have all expressed a similar sentiment to me on the subject and I thus feel vindicated in my position. Going back further, Marx and Lenin were unapologetic in their support for religious liberty despite their own disbelief in a higher power. Even Kyle Kulinski has distanced himself from the so-called "New Atheist" movement in recent years. I actually unsubscribed from the Humanist Report simply because he described himself as an antitheist on his podcast and it is the one ideology I refuse to tolerate.
To be clear, I have no problem whatsoever with atheists. In fact, many of my personal friends and comrades alike are irreligious but we maintain our relationships because they also express opposition to the persecution of people of faith. I also concur that organized religious institutions are by no means above criticism or even disdain. Antitheism or antagonism towards religious people on the other hand is not only a vile worldview, but one that is without merit, considering that some of the greatest socialist heroes have followed a particular faith, including Malcolm X, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Chris Hedges. It is my sincere hope that the ostracization of antithiests becomes a top priority for the left as these people are not allies and should be as shunned from the movement as national socialists (nazbols).
TL;DR: Atheists are acceptable, antithiests at bare minimum serve as useful idiots for war and the interests of industry. I would highly recommend reading "When Atheism Becomes Religion" by Rev. Hedges for those who would like to learn more on the topic.

Photo from: vskrynia.com.ua We've written several posts about different facets of Ukrainian traditional attire, with perhaps the most iconic garment being the Vyshyvanka (here and here) which are crafted with such a respect for beautiful symbolic patterns. As one of the artisans featured in a previous post said (paraphrasing), “Our people always like to look good”. Well, we've never talked about where all these garments would be stored (before IKEA) but there's an interesting piece of culture there, too. The furniture of regular folk in the past, just like today, needed to be as easy to use as it was multifunctional. The "closet" in the traditional Ukrainian home (we wrote about the home, Khata, in this series: Part I Part II) was usually either hung over beams... or it was kept in the Skrynya. Skrynya, the chest, has long been an indispensable element in the decoration of a traditional Ukrainian home. It served as a place to store clothes, Rushnyky, etc. Sometimes it was used as a table and - if the chest was on the bigger side - it could even serve as a bed! My closet is... not as organized. Skrynya, it must be said, were also a part of wedding culture. It's not my favorite aspect of them. Similar to the "dowry chest" in other European cultures, and the "hope chest" concept in America, they were often given to young women so they could assemble items that would supposedly be useful to them during their married life. And so Skrynya were very popular for a wide range of uses, and they were always in demand. An old Ukrainian folk saying plainly indicates their feelings on the matter: "Without a chest there's nothing, because everything's in the chest." Very masterful craftspeople could make a living just making the chests, but of course it was also widespread for people to just make them because they are useful and beautiful even if painted by a non-professional. That means there is a wide variety of intricacy in the examples you'll find in museums, which to me adds a lot of charm and intrigue to this furniture! Before we get into the details, I just want to point out that Radomyshl Castle, the museum we wrote about yesterday, has a fantastic large collection of antique Skrynya. Another reason to visit. _______________________________ Patterns The chests were painted in truly vivid shades, and each region is known for their own preferences (like most folk crafts in Ukraine). There were also types of Skrynya that had no paint; instead they were either decorated with burned-in patterns, or with intricate and delicate carving. Here's a little tour around Ukraine via Skrynya! A 19th century Skrynya from Western Ukraine, Hutsulshchyna and Pokuttya Folk Art Museum. Early 20th century, Ivano-Frankivsk. Photo: Vskrynia.com.ua Detail of Early 20th century, Ivano-Frankivsk. Photo: Vskrynia.com.ua 1920's, Chernivtsi region. Early 20th century, Poltava region. Early 20th century, Kyiv. Early 20th century, Dnipro region. 19th century, Kropyvnytskyi. _______________________________ Community Chest They are pretty big! Mannequins for scale. Most often, chests were painted by the same carpenters who built them. Deciduous trees like oak, maple, or linden were primarily used as the source material for crafting these chests, as their wooden planks were the most ideal blend of pliant and tough. In some areas, though, beech and sycamore were popular. These most richly-ornamented chests could carry quite a hefty price tag, often making them a luxury only the affluent could indulge in. And it was not only a matter of painting, but iron-clad chests were pretty ubiquitous too. They were reinforced with iron bindings, adorned with a variety of hand-wrought details - and were able to be locked. The lock was important because there was generally a smaller box inside the Skrynya that would be used to store highly-valued possessions like jewelry, money, and important family heirlooms. Forged handles embellishing the sides were an integral design feature, making this hefty and sizeable piece of furniture somewhat easier to move, which was important because if there was ever a fire, the Skrynya would be the first thing carried out! Typically, a Rushnyk is draped over the chest as a stylish finishing touch. _______________________________ Sadly, many of the examples you'll see in this post are not in the best of shape. However, it's easy to imagine how unreal and bursting with color these would have been when they were still be used (and cherished) daily. If you've been reading this series since the beginning, it will probably not surprise you that by the 1950s and 1960s, the widespread craftsmanship of Ukrainian chest making had nearly completely disappeared. Nowadays, other than in the workshops of modern folk craftspeople who are reviving the tradition, chests are usually seen only in museums or in the lucky homes that managed to preserve them through the dark times. _______________________________ The 465th day of a nine year invasion that has been going on for centuries. 2023.06.03 03:47 The_Arab_Hoe SUBREDDIT RULES (UPDATE)
Alright Gorls, here's a list of the subreddit rules.
But first...
At the time of posting this,
ambbabies has hit over
14k subscribers. Thank you for making the sub what it is!
u/dry_comedian2732 and I have enjoyed being mods and could not have done it without all your help.
We like to think of this place as a close community. Somewhere for us to escape for a little while, have some fun and laugh.
Here is a list of the updated rules. Please keep in mind, rules can change and in certain situations leniency will be granted. That is up to our discretion but we aim to be fair and transparent with you all.
────────
Subreddit Rules
1. Avoid Harassment and Bullying While discussion and criticism are allowed, be mindful to avoid comments and posts that are body shaming, insults, wishing harm and death, and overly critical of her physical attributes or considered derogatory towards others in her orbit. Please use your discretion when considering this rule as not all rules are black and white.
2. No Cow Tipping Don't touch the poo. No Cow Tipping. Don't come here to share, brag or show off that you have been blocked by Amber on IG. This goes for anyone in the Amberverse. We're here for a bit of snark and a bit of fun - not to get involved in anyone's personal life. This will earn a straight ban.
It is against Reddit site-wide policy to directly harass, threaten, intimidate, incite, or brigade/set up a brigade against a person on Reddit or across platforms.
3. Hate Speech WILL NOT be tolerated Comments or Posts containing implicit hate speech will be removed. This includes racism, anti-LGBTQIA2S+, and anti-Semitism, and any pejorative or derogatory towards protected classes such as sexual identity, gender, sexual preferences, religion etc. There is zero tolerance for this here.
4. No unrelated/repeated posts This includes posting threads completely unrelated to the Amberverse and saying 'Reminded me of our girl'. Please do not do this. It cloggs up the sub and is usually a repeated post. Posting a photo of a cherry and saying 'Guess who came to mind?' is funny the first time but that's about it. These posts will be removed.
Please check before you post. There have been a lot of repeated posts, particularly when someone from the Amberverse posts a new video. Please sort by new and check there isn't already a thread. It only takes a couple seconds of your time and will help us keep the sub unclogged.
5. No Doxxing Please don't try and be FBI Frank - Absolutely no attempts to gain or share, investigate, doxx or reveal any personal identifying information. This includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, locations or any content that could be used to 'hunt' or 'investigate' someone.
Posting someone's personal information will get you banned. When posting screenshots, be sure to blur out any personal information or names.
Again, this rule applies to everyone in the Amberverse.
6. Be Civil Do not devolve into personal attacks against other posters on the subreddit and in private messages including Modmail. We're here to snark on the Pookieverse, not each other.
7. Avoid Personal Soapboxing. This is not the place for posting about your life, your weight loss, your pets etc. There are other communities for this so please keep everything related directly to the Amberverse.
8. No Direct Links to ALR Please do not post any direct links to ALR's Youtube, Instagram, or any other social media accounts. If you don't want to support Amber directly (which is strongly encouraged) you can watch ALL of her videos here
YEWTUBE - using this site will not give Pookie any support or money.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- We have an automoderator that blocks new accounts. If the account is younger than 30 days old and/or has less than 100 comment karma - that account will not be able to post new threads. We are currently working to add the same thing for commenting.
- In the event of someone breaking one these rules - please report it. If it's urgent or requires quick action, please send a personal message to a mod or tag us in the thread. This has worked great recently and we appreciate all your efforts.
I hope we have covered everything clearly enough. We are always open to suggestions and feedback. If you have any questions at all feel free to ask away.
Both of us would like to thank you all again. We are very appreciatve of your help in keeping the subreddit alive. And we are immensely proud of you guys for bringing it back to what it was!

2023.06.03 02:50 TheBonesOfAutumn In the 1970’s, two unrelated deaths occurred within the confines of a small home that once stood along Lawrence County, Indiana’s Ramsey Ridge Road. Referred to by locals as “The Mysteries of Skin Ridge,” this is the story of the unusual deaths of Dennis McArthur, and Gerry Lee.
Nestled in northern Lawrence County, Indiana, just six miles from Bedford, lies Ramsey Ridge Road. Just under three miles in length, the rural pathway once referred to as “Skin Ridge'' winds through the sparsely populated area’s dense woods atop a hill overlooking Little Salt Creek and nearby Bartlettsville. In the 1970’s, two completely unrelated deaths occurred within the confines of a modest green house that once stood along the ridge. Referred to by locals as “The Mysteries of Skin Ridge,” this is the story of the unusual deaths of Dennis McArthur, and Gerry Lee.
Dennis McArthur
On April 11, 1976, 44-year-old Pearl McArthur returned home after a lengthy stay at Madison State Hospital. Pearl, who would later be diagnosed with schizophrenia, had committed herself to the hospital in early December, leaving her 18-year-old son, Dennis, to care for the house in her absence. Accompanied by her 23-year-old daughter, April, who lived in nearby Bedford with her husband Gary, Pearl made her way inside the small two-story farmhouse.
Inside, Pearl and April found the home in complete disarray. Trash laid strewed about, lamps and furniture were overturned, and the stove was caved in, its exhaust pipe torn from the wall. It was unusually cold inside as though no heat had been recently used, and a strange smell permeated the air.
Alarmed, Pearl and April began to frantically search for Dennis. As they made their way over to a small couch located in a bedroom on the second floor, they noticed a pile of blankets lying on the sofa. As Pearl peeled back the layer of quilts, she was met with a horrific scene; Dennis’s decomposed body lay beneath the bedding. They immediately summoned police.
Dennis was found in a fetal position on the couch, facing inwards. Although covered by quilts, he was nude from the waist down. The coroner estimated he had died one to two months prior, however the cold weather had, in part, delayed the decomposition process making it difficult to give an exact time of death. During an autopsy, it was discovered that Dennis was severely emaciated, to the point of starvation. No evidence of external or internal injuries were found.
Police discovered several bottles of pills in the home; vitamins used for energy, an antidepressant, and a drug used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. All of the pills were prescribed to Pearl, and were still relatively full. A toxicology test was conducted and proved negative, however the state pathologist who performed the test admitted that the test was incapable of detecting substances such as LSD. He also explained due to the amount of time that had passed since his death, the tests might not be one hundred percent accurate. Dennis’ cause of death was listed as malnutrition and exposure.
Investigators found several clues at the scene that struck them as odd. Although the cabin appeared ransacked, nothing seemed to be missing, including a small amount of money that was found within the disheveled home. Along with money, a small amount of, now spoiled, food was found in the cabinets and refrigerator. An upstairs window was found to be broken from the inside. Also upstairs, investigators discovered several large pools of blood, including one beside the couch where Dennis’ body was found. They also found blood on the backside of the couch, on a rug, and on the kitchen door frame, along with splatter on a wall. Testing confirmed the blood to be human.
Dennis was well known to both police and the county’s social workers. His mother, Pearl, was frequently in and out of mental institutions leaving Dennis and his two siblings to fend for themselves. The children’s father, Walter, had abandoned the family and moved to Georgia years prior. In 1972, Dennis was arrested for theft and truancy. That same year, he was expelled from school and never returned.
He was again arrested in 1973, this time for driving without a license, fleeing from police, possession of alcohol, and curfew violation. After his release, Dennis was sent to live with a man named Al Hagopian, a case worker for the Youth Services Bureau. Al was quoted as saying; “Finding him a place to stay was hard. The house where he had been staying was pretty grubby, and the state thought he was too young to live alone. His mother was in and out of hospitals a lot and he worried about her constantly. He didn’t want to return home, but said he had to go back to help care for his mother.”
Al discovered that Dennis “read and wrote backwards,” and was “practically illiterate.” After reviewing Dennis’ school records, he found multiple instances where teachers labeled Dennis as having disciplinary problems when it came to schoolwork, however not once did they mention he had a clear learning disability. Al further explained that attempts to secure employment for Dennis were nearly never successful. Aside from being unable to read or write, he had no vehicle. He also had no stable address or phone number and was oftentimes dirty and dressed in near rags.
Dennis’ unfair hand he had been dealt did not stop him from trying to act like an average kid most of the time, Al added. He explained that Dennis had an interest in cars, enjoyed hanging out with his friends, and was always chasing girls. He had also told Al he wanted to someday save up enough money for a new guitar, as he loved to play music. Al admitted that Dennis was also into the “street scene” and had dabbled in drugs and alcohol. Dennis returned home after two months of living with Al.
In 1974, after another arrest and his subsequent release from a youth detention center, Dennis went to live with his father for a short time. Dennis’ arrest had made headlines when it was learned the young man had been kept with adult men for a long period before being transferred to the youth detention center. Dennis and Walter reportedly couldn’t get along, however, and Dennis ran away to Florida. He lived there for a few months, washing cars to make money, before returning to the home on Ramsey Ridge in Indiana in 1975. He was again arrested, this time in Bloomington, Indiana for carrying a concealed weapon, alcohol consumption, and curfew violation. At the time of Dennis’ death, the charges against him were still pending.
According to his sister, April, she had gone to visit Dennis at the home on Ramsey Ridge on Christmas Eve. April said Dennis was sitting on the couch, playing his guitar. He also showed her a new rug he had purchased for the home. According to her, he seemed his usual self and the home was clean. April offered him some money, however Dennis refused claiming he had enough to get by.
Lucy Lively, an aunt of Dennis’ who lived “within hollering distance,” claimed she entered the home on February 1st to turn off a lamp that had been left burning. While she did not see Dennis, she claimed the home's interior was in normal order. Joe McArthur, Dennis’ paternal grandfather who also lived nearby, said it was not unusual for Dennis to disappear for long periods, so he thought nothing of the youths' absence as of late.
When Walter, Dennis’ father, was informed of his son's death, he informed police that Dennis, along with two male friends, had come to visit him in Georgia in mid December. He gave a description of the two teens and told police they had been introduced to him as “John Boy'' and “Blonde John.”
Police were able to track down “Blonde John” who was identified as 18-year-old John Fonk of Bloomington, Indiana. John told investigators that he and Dennis had driven to Florida together in October, not December, as Walter had stated. John explained they had stopped by Walter’s home in Georgia on their way back home. He was confident in the date as he had joined the Air Force in December. He also explained that “John Boy” had been a hitchhiker they had picked up along the way. According to John, “John Boy” rode back to Indiana with the pair, but he had not seen him, or Dennis since. He described him as being in his mid 20’s. After learning of the discrepancy in Walter’s story, police again tried to contact him, however phone calls and letters went unanswered. Unfortunately, they were never able to identify “John Boy.”
Further questioning of social services showed that Pearl had filled several grocery orders provided by state services, however the orders ceased when she had been again hospitalized. Eventually the Lawrence County Welfare Office had taken control and promised to look in on Dennis, however they could provide no evidence they had followed up on the case. They suggested that Dennis, overwhelmed with his impoverished lifestyle, had simply starved himself to the point of being comatose, before succumbing to the harsh cold of winter. They were quoted as saying “We were aware of him of course, but he never came to us. We don’t go looking for people if they don’t come to us for help. Now if he had, we would have done something.”
The local sheriff as well as members of Dennis’ family were unsatisfied with Dennis’ listed cause of death and continued to pursue the investigation for several months. Unfortunately due to a lack of funds, more elaborate tests that may have presented some clue as to how Dennis died could not be conducted. Sheriff Robbins was quoted as saying, “This is a very disturbing mystery, because even if someone confessed to killing him, I doubt we would have the evidence to prove it. But it sure is hard to believe he could kill himself like that, by just laying down and dying. We aren’t closing the case, it will remain open. But until we have something more to go on, there’s not much more we can do at this point.”
Dennis was laid to rest at Heltonville’s Gilgal Cemetery. Few attended the modest closed casket funeral and subsequent burial. One journalist gave a last description of Dennis’ final resting place,
“The dogwood trees are in full bloom on the hillsides of Gilgal Cemetery, and though Dennis’ body now rests peacefully beneath a carpet of fallen petals, his soul will surely never rest until the reasons behind his death are discovered.”
Pearl, Dennis’ mother, passed away in 2000 at the age of 67. Walter, Dennis’ father, died in 1988. His sister, April, passed away suddenly in 2006 at the age of 53. Dennis also had an older brother, Gordon, who passed away in 1994 at the age of 42.
Gerry Lee
On the evening of May 28, 1978, police were again summoned to the little green house on Ramsey Ridge. The home was now occupied by 27-year-old Gerry Lee, a divorced self employed carpenter, and his roommate, 25-year-old Michael Davis. When police arrived, Michael informed them that Gerry had committed suicide.
Gerry was found hanging from a maple tree located 20 feet from the home's front porch. The rope had been tied off to a branch approximately 10 feet above the ground and fashioned into a noose. His feet were found to be touching the ground, and his knees were bent. Blood was discovered on Gerry’s hands and pants, despite having suffered no visible wounds. An autopsy would reveal that Gerry had died of asphyxiation as a result of a fracture to his cricoid cartilage located at the base of his larynx. The coroner stated this was not an injury normally associated with suicidal hangings, but instead blunt force trauma to the throat. Inside, more blood was found on a television set, the phone, and on the kitchen floor. A window on the home's back door had been broken from the outside, leaving shards of glass lying on the kitchen floor.
When questioned, Michael gave an explanation for the unusual findings. He claimed that he, Gerry, and two other friends, Mike Oakly and Roberta Chandler, had spent the day in nearby Bedford before the foursome returned to the home on Ramsey Ridge. There, Michael told police that he and Gerry got into a “friendly scuffle” that resulted in Michael falling into the window in the kitchen. He suffered a deep laceration to his forehead that left him bleeding profusely.
According to Michael, Roberta and Mike accompanied him to seek medical treatment in Bedford, while Gerry stayed behind at home. Michael returned home alone from the hospital, having left Roberta and Mike in town. It was then he discovered Gerry’s body and summoned police. He added that that evening Gerry had threatened to shoot himself multiple times with one of the loaded guns kept in the home.
When Roberta and Mike were taken in for questioning, they gave similar accounts of the night's events. Both were released. Aside from having a visible wound, medical staff confirmed Michael had been to the hospital that evening, having sought treatment for a laceration to his forehead.
Still, both the prosecutor and the county coroner stated they were not entirely satisfied with a verdict of suicide. The coroner stated “Some things have not fallen into place like they should with a suicide case. Although it looks as though it could be a suicide, there are so many angles that do not fit in with the suicide verdict.” The prosecutor agreed, “I’m not satisfied with how the investigation was handled,” he said, “and there are still a lot of unanswered questions. Several months later, Gerry’s case was brought before a grand jury who ultimately returned a verdict of “probable suicide.”
Gerry was laid to rest in Bedford’s Breckenridge Cemetery. Despite his death being declared a suicide, many locals, including Gerry’s friends and neighbors, continued to believe that something more sinister may have happened that evening, and the suicide was in fact staged. The community’s more superstitious elders shared a similar belief, however adding that a “strange ethereal force” inhabited the room where Gerry once slept, and where two years prior the body of Dennis had been discovered.
Whatever your opinion may be, it seems for some the books will never fully be closed on “The Mysteries of Skin Ridge.”

2023.06.03 02:21 christg91 Need Advice on Door Handle Latch Finishing - Encountering Friction
| Hello renovation community, I'm currently facing an issue with a door handle latch in my home and am looking for some guidance and innovative ideas to help solve it. As you can see in the first attached photo, the latch seems to rub against the door frame before it can fully engage into its closed position. This friction not only affects the door's closing and latching mechanism but also causes a wear on both the latch and the frame over time. It's clearly not ideal, and I'm hoping to address this issue before it escalates further. Does anyone have any suggestions on the type of finish I could use or any specific methods for applying it? Thanks in advance for your help and advice! submitted by christg91 to Renovations [link] [comments] |
