2023.06.08 17:44 theguitarhero898 East Coast Smog Affecting Riding

Hey everyone, just checking in to say this crazy smog caused by the Canadian Wildfires is definitely affecting the (what would be) beautiful riding weather.
Just a PSA to be mindful that if you’re in an area with high levels of smog or bad air quality it may not be the best idea to ride right now. The visibility is also worse right now, at least In the NJ/NY area and many of the other east cost states.
I still may ride before it dissipates, but maybe breathing that in directly through the helmet isn’t the best idea right now….
Stay safe, everyone.

2023.06.07 16:24 gambl0r82 CDPHP Bike Share update

I had been wondering why the bikes weren't out yet this year... CDPHP Cycle just sent out this update and I thought others here might be interested (emphasis mine)
-----
Dear Valued CDPHP Cycle! Members –
As you know, we have experienced delays in getting season seven up and running. We have made several innovative and important improvements to make this season our best yet, including the addition of electric bikes and upgraded pedal bike technology. As we have been making those upgrades, we have run into implementation delays, which has unfortunately delayed the start of season seven.
We are happy to let you know that e-bikes will be the newest bikes to hit the road first. We expect to have those up and running in the next two weeks. Pedal bikes will follow shortly after that. We want you to know, we will keep the bikes out as long as possible this season, weather permitting, and CDPHP Cycle! will hit the road at the start of the season in 2024 which is in April. We also want to assure you; seasonal memberships will be prorated this season. Be on the lookout for our new website www.cdphpcycle.org and upgraded app (available in both the App Store and Google Play stores) both available this week for updated information and access to memberships.
Stay tuned to our social media channels for the latest information on the program. We appreciate your continued patience and your membership and look forward to seeing you riding soon!

2023.06.07 16:15 Becca4130 Help with new Tire choice please??

My tires on my 2015 A4 Quattro sedan mine are almost shot at this point even though I never go anywhere. Anyway I’m trying to decide between the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or the new Michelin CrossClimate2. I haven’t seen much about the cross climate yet for reviews but I live in NJ so we do encounter some snow and the typical lovely Northeast rain, ice and weather changes so I want and all weather that is also decent in snow and a lot of them are not. Any advice on this? Thanks

2023.06.07 01:26 njsullyalex Why is Los Angeles so cold right now?

I’m visiting Los Angeles this weekend with some friends and checked the forecast, the highs are not expected to break 70 degrees F which seems unusually cold for June for a city in the Southwest US. I’m from North NJ (close to NYC) and it’s solidly in the 70s at this point and I’m currently living in Tucson AZ, not ridiculously far from LA, and temps are in the 90s every day and we’ve already had a few days exceed triple digits.
I’ve been to LA once before in March 2017 and it was in the 50s/60s then so this seems really unusual. Can someone from LA or a weather expert explain?

2023.06.06 18:40 little_BonBon Fun things to do with your dog?

Hi! I live in Warren County NJ and am looking for fun things to do with your dog this weekend. I'm not opposed to driving as we have the whole day Saturday to kill. We typically do hikes, so hiking suggestions are welcome. Really anything fun that is dog friendly is appreciated. This nice weather has her constantly wanting to do stuff and her guilt tripping faces are a real thing😂

[8.6] UN climate official warns world at "tipping point" in climate crisis — The Guardian
The world is at a "tipping point" in the climate crisis that requires all countries to put aside their national interests to fight for the common good, the UN's top climate official has warned. Simon Stiell, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, pointed to recent findings from scientists that temperatures were likely to exceed the threshold of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels within the next five years. Stiell was addressing representatives from nearly 200 countries gathered in Bonn, the UN's climate headquarters, to discuss how to forge a "course correction" that would put the world on track to meet the aspirations of the 2015 Paris climate agreement, and limit global heating to 1.5C.
[7.5] Binance faces investor exodus following SEC lawsuit, crypto value impacted — Reuters
Investors have withdrawn approximately $790 million from cryptocurrency exchange Binance, in the last 24 hours, following a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC accuses Binance of evading U.S. laws through deceptive practices, such as inflating trading volumes and diverting customer funds. Binance, in response, insists it has cooperated with the SEC and will defend its platform vigorously. This legal action, coupled with previous lawsuits, contributes to a shaky period for Binance and has had a noticeable effect on the value of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Binance's own BNB.
[7.4] Mycorrhizal fungi play larger role in carbon storage than previously thought — The Conversation
New research suggests that mycorrhizal fungi, which live in symbiosis with plants, could play a significant role in storing carbon, helping to offset carbon emissions. The fungiform vast underground networks, exchanging nutrients and water for carbon-rich sugars from plants. It's estimated that these fungi absorb around 36% of the world’s annual carbon emissions from fossil fuels. Although the fungi also naturally release some carbon back into the atmosphere, their net contribution to soil carbon storage is substantial. Despite the lack of data from certain ecosystems and regions, the findings indicate the importance of these fungal networks in the carbon cycle. Preserving these networks, particularly in the face of deforestation and land-clearing, could offer an additional avenue for tackling climate change.
[7.4] Rich industrialized countries could owe $170tn in climate reparations by 2050 — The Guardian
A new study published in the journal Nature Sustainability has calculated that rich industrialised countries responsible for excessive levels of greenhouse gas emissions could be liable to pay $170tn in climate reparations by 2050 to ensure targets to curtail climate breakdown are met. The proposed compensation, which amounts to almost $6tn annually, would be paid to historically low-polluting developing countries that must transition away from fossil fuels despite not having yet used their “fair share” of the global carbon budget. The compensation system is based on the idea that the atmosphere is a commons, a natural resource for everyone which has not been used equitably.
[7.4] Canada faces unprecedented wildfire season — Toronto Star
Canada is facing an unprecedented wildfire season, with officials warning that by the end of August, the country could have more scorched forest than ever before. The situation is the result of a convergence of factors, including climate change, which is delivering conditions conducive to more frequent and severe wildfires, and large-scale weather patterns that are fanning the flames. There are significant fires burning in every single province and territory. Already this year, there have been 2,214 wildfires that have blackened more than 3.3 million hectares of Canadian wildland, more than five million football fields’ worth.
[7.2] Dam destruction in Ukraine prompts mass evacuations and potential large-scale devastation — CNN
The Nova Kakhova dam on the Dnipro River in Kherson, southern Ukraine, was destroyed, prompting mass evacuations and fears of large-scale devastation. Ukraine accused Moscow’s forces of committing an act of “ecocide.” The critical dam spans the Dnipro River, a major waterway running through southeastern Ukraine, and there are multiple towns and cities downstream, including Kherson, a city of some 300,000 people before Moscow’s invasion of its neighbour. The dam is a critical piece of infrastructure, holding around 18 cubic kilometres in the Kakhovka Reservoir, about equal to the Great Salt Lake in the US state of Utah. It also supplies water for the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which lies upstream and is also under Russian control.
[7.1] Reserve Bank of Australia raises interest rates to 11-year high to tackle inflation — news.com.au
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised interest rates to an 11-year high of 4.10%, up 0.25 percentage points, in a bid to tackle inflation. The move means that the average borrower with a $500,000 home loan could now be paying $1,134, or 49%, more a month. Economists were split on whether the RBA would raise rates, with some citing the decision to lift the minimum wage as a cause for concern. The RBA's governor, Philip Lowe, defended the increases at a parliamentary hearing last week.

2023.06.05 23:11 FISHING_100000000000 Accuracy of weather a week out currently?

I’m taking a trip to Cape May, NJ Sunday, June 11 to Friday, June 16th.
I see there’s a lot of commotion in terms of weather right now. Apple weather app shows thunderstorms. I read a few articles saying the northeast area is gonna flip around and be cool compared to the last while of heat.
So I guess my question is this:
With how crazy the weather is looking currently, Is the weather a week out that accurate? I know distant forecasts get more and more guess-y, but is it even more-so that now? should I expect T-Storms and rain during my trip with how the jet stream is going?

2023.06.05 22:06 QuiGonJosh 36 [M4R] TN/USA

I've moved back to TN from NJ last year, and have been trying to get out more and meet new people again. Work doesn't make that easy, especially with long overnight shifts, but it never hurts to try anyway. I'm into live music, biking/hiking/sports, exploring the city, and going out for drinks/food.
I have cats and plants, love black coffee and whisky, and binging streaming shows during bad weather. Music is my #1 though, and I'm always listening to something wherever I am. Trading playlists and finding new bands are a great way to get to know someone new. I’m looking for someone to talk to about my day and vice versa. New friends, casual chats, or any kind of consistent conversation helps pass the time and makes the days much better.

2023.06.05 18:27 Engr_C Moving to Maryland from the Philippines. What should I expect?

Hello! I'm a 29-year old Filipino guy who is about to move to Maryland in a few weeks. As an introduction, I was born in NJ, but our family moved back to Philippines when I was about 3, and I've been here pretty much all my life. All I've known about America is what I see TV and the internet.
I grew up in Manila, so in a nutshell, here's what I've experienced here growing up: concrete jungle, hot and humid weather year-round, everything important is within a 5-minute walk or ride from home, poor traffic, existent but imperfect public transport.
I've been planning to move out of the Philippines for a while now because of the lack of decent opportunities for people in my profession; the US being my top country of choice since I happen to be a citizen by being born there. Why Maryland? Two things: first, I work for an international company, so I applied for an opening in my company's Columbia office and was accepted. Second, I happened to have family there. Once I got the job, they were initally supposed to help me find a place to live, but my aunt was able to convince her landlord to let me stay with her, so now I'm renting a place with her for 600$/month.
I'll be moving to Fort Washington, but I'll be working from home, so I don't need to worry about the commute to the office all the way in Columbia. So far, here's what I'm expecting from the area based on my research: relatively rural, lots of green space, not much public transportation, and everything you need might take a bit of a drive to get there. Basically quite the opposite of Manila.
Is that an accurate assessment? If so, then I'm excited for cooler, cleaner environments, but a bit worried about how to get around. As an introvert, I do love staying at home, but introverts like me do need some sun every now and then. Will I need to drive if I wanna get around?
Also, what kinds of things are there to do around the Fort Washington area? So far I'm aware of National Harbor and Tanger Outlets, but other than that, the stores seem to be dotted all over the place. As a geek who's into video games and tabletop games, are there any places within the area that would encourage my hobbies?

2023.06.04 23:22 SoftwareHot6940 How to break in?

Is there any way into a commercial diving career without schooling? I’m 28 years old and have had advanced open water certification since the age of 13. I’m nitrox and dry suit certified with somewhere between 55-70 dives under my belt. My max depth in saltwater has been 150 and 100 in a quarry, I’ve dove in cold weather as well. Outside of diving I work in shipyard as a fitter and welder. I considered a dove school in Erial, NJ after college but I quickly found out that “job placement programs” fresh out of schools are not what they seem kn the slightest. Any info helps, im happy with my life but I’ve dreamt of diving for a living since I was a child. Thank you!!!

[8.5] Earth's energy imbalance due to human activity causing global warming and climate change — JARA News
The Earth's energy imbalance, caused by human activity through the emission of greenhouse gases, is leading to global warming and climate change, according to a recent report from the World Meteorological Organization. The excess energy accumulates in the different components of the climate system, with the ocean storing 89% of the excess heat, leading to coral bleaching events and other negative impacts on marine ecosystems. The imbalance also has negative impacts on humanity and ecosystems, with between 3.3 and 3.6 billion people living in contexts vulnerable to global warming. The solution is to reduce emissions to zero, with individuals able to contribute by using active transportation, consuming less meat and dairy products, reducing food waste, and improving the energy efficiency of homes.
[8.2] Draft for first international treaty on plastic pollution to be produced by November — FRANCE 24 English
Negotiators at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for Plastics have agreed to produce an initial draft of the first international, legally binding treaty on plastic pollution, on land and at sea, before their next meeting in Kenya in November. The treaty aims to end plastic pollution altogether by 2040 by slashing production and limiting some chemicals used in making plastics. However, countries with big petroleum industries like the US, China and Saudi Arabia are focusing instead on plastic recycling, and want country-by-country rules instead of across-the-board limits. Humanity produces more than 430 million tons of plastic annually, two-thirds of which are short-lived products that soon become waste, filling the ocean and, often, working their way into the human food chain.
[8.2] Human-made climate change causing Earth's surface to warm and upper atmosphere to cool dramatically — Innovation Origins
Researchers have confirmed that human-made climate change is causing the Earth's surface to warm, while the upper atmosphere cools significantly. This phenomenon, called an atmospheric paradox, impacts orbiting satellite, the ozone layer, and potentially alters Earth's weather patterns. Increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere are affecting these layers differently, warming the lower atmosphere (troposphere) but cooling the upper ones (mesosphere and thermosphere). If CO2 levels continue to rise, these trends are likely to intensify, posing increasing risks to satellites and delaying the recovery of the ozone layer. Further research is needed to fully understand these long-term effects on the climate system.
[7.7] Superbugs pose significant threat to modern medicine and human life expectancy — Sydney Morning Herald
Superbugs, or organisms that have evolved to become resistant to medicine, are on the rise and pose a significant threat to modern medicine. Microbes evolve quickly because they multiply so rapidly, and only those with the best defences against evolutionary pressures survive. Superbugs can be resistant before they infect someone, develop resistance inside a person who is taking antibiotics, or be resistant before they infect someone, swirling around in the world with inbuilt protection against the drugs we would usually throw at them. A drug-resistant form of golden staph, or staphylococcus aureas, is the most dominant superbug in Australia, and a drug-resistant form of extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) E. coli, an enzyme made by bacteria in the gut, is the second-most common superbug. The World Health Organisation has warned that returning to a pre-antibiotic era would lead to the average human life expectancy plummeting from 70 years to 50 and could undermine developments in cancer treatment.
[7.0] Strikes increase in Russia's Belgorod region as Ukrainian forces prepare for counteroffensive — Newsweek
Strikes have increased in Russia's Belgorod region as Ukrainian forces prepare for a major counteroffensive. The governor of the region claimed that around 850 missiles and other projectiles were launched at Shebekino, injuring 16 people and killing two women. The shelling has also caused damage to numerous buildings in the region, leaving Shebekino without food or water. Pro-Ukraine Russian rebel groups are reportedly still active in Belgorod, despite previous claims from the Kremlin that they had been successfully repelled.

2023.06.04 03:47 burner-needcathelp My older cat is not eating

So I was a recent college student, just finally graduated and came home around the 20th in May. I had not been home in a while, but had tried to keep updates on my two cats (one male one female) with my mother. My mother had just said that one of them (male) seemed to be under the weather and that the other (female) would eat his food. This was after earlier in the year when I had a scare about our female cat undereating, while the other sometimes ate her food, so I was thinking she may have finally gotten her appetite back after we gave her antibiotics back in January/February.
What I came home to though, was my cat almost always ignoring his food, not the other one stealing it. He was also so much bonier than what I saw months ago during winter break. He's able to walk, but I notice he has a slight limp to his back legs. I've checked his paws to make sure nothing was caught in them, or if there was any injury I could discern. I've been monitoring him when I can to make sure he eats something, but most times he's skipping meals rather than eating. It really scared me today when he just completely ignored his wet food, and never came around for dry food. I checked his mouth to see his teeth, but they look the same as usual. I haven't seen him go to the litter boxes directly, but I believe he must be still going since there's still a lot of poop and urine when I clean every other day. There was an incident a few days ago where he snuck into another room and ate a rose petal that had fallen, and I didn't catch him in time. Thankfully he did throw it up, but I'm sure that if he's having digestive or some other type of eating issue that's causing this, that incident certainly did not help and I'm worried it might have given some toxicity. One thing I did try recently is putting some Churu in his food. I tried mixing it over both of their dry food bowls last week, and they both ate it up, dry included. I tried a similar strategy today with my male cat and his wet food, but he really only licked around the food and just ate the Churu. It's something at least, but it's still bad if that's the only thing he'll eat.
I really want to help him, but the local vet we go to has no availability until the 12th. I'm really scared to hold out to that long, but I'm not sure what to do. These are just the things I've noticed recently, so who knows what may have happened over the last few months while I was at college. I've had both of these cats for roughly 14 years, and I know that they're fairly old for their lifespan. But if there's something I can do to help him or even both of them, I really want to act now before something critical happens. The fact that my other cat was having some issues before while he was completely fine, only for this to happen now has completely taken me by surprise. Any help or advice is appreciated, even if it's just short-term solutions on encouraging him to eat more.

Do you guys recommend moving to Columbus Ohio from NJ
My info 1. Spouse - stay at home mom for now and might find a job later for may be 100-150k 2. One 3month old daughter and 2 year old mini aussie dog 3. Planning for 1 more kid after 3-4 years. 4. Income - 300k from software job and no other income 5. NW - 200k (non retirement) and 200k retirement 6. H1-B for life as I am Indian and will stay in USA till kicked out, I will wait for my 3 month old US citizen daughter to grow up and sponser me. 7. No property in USA but I got some ancestral non income generating homes in India.
Probs with NJ I don't want to pay like 700k or 800k for a home which I am don't like or barely like and 6.5-7 % interest for 30 years(may be less rate in future) and high property taxes to go to public schools while I want private schools (for political reasons and my preference on schools). NJ New homes is only for families with close to a million dollars in bank for a cash offer or for families earning 500k+ yearly income to easily afford 160k down payment with good backup cash and 5-8k monthly payment on property which I am neither. I think I can only do either a small, old, ugly or far away home in NJ for 600k or less which I don't want.
Pros of Columbus I can get a big good looking home for less amount with low property taxes. The home will look better than any other friend's home I had seen in NJ with similar income. Decent private schools for 8-15k per year. (Just need to keep my remote job and future job changes might be hard, also social life needs to be restarted).
Would Christian private schools in Columbus take non christians ?, We are atheists and our family are Hindus.
Requirements
  1. City with good safety where my wife/daughter can walk at night
  2. City where I can afford private schools for 10-15k per year
  3. City with somewhat less state income tax and less property tax
  4. City where I can buy a big home 2k -3k square feet with 4-5 bedroom and 3 bathrooms and backyard for my dog to play for a total price of 600k or less, preferably 400-500k.
  5. I love the cold NJ/NY weather, my favorite outside is 50-60f (I can live with 40f but hard to tolerate 70f + ) and I can't stand the heat as I came from super hot Indian city.
  6. I would like free space of 0.5 -2 acres around but not a requirement
  7. I would like a single floor home but that's mostly in Texas like area right. So I think I can live with two stories. (Updated)
  8. I work in software but permanent remote job. If there are some software in person jobs in the city it would be good as I can get the in person job if I am fired from remote job.
  9. I mostly stay at home but I want some accessibility for music classes, self defense classes, gym, warehouse clubs,

2023.06.03 01:36 wbradford00 Jeep WJ rumble when braking

Hello all. Had a hot day here in NJ, and i just came across a random issue with my 04 WJ. I was coming down a slight grade and i began to hear a low rumbling noise, then noticed that it felt like i was being engine braked despite not being in a low gear or being on the brake pedal. I pulled over immediately, and didn't notice any signs of, well, anything. I decided I could limp home (less than a mile) and noted that, when braking, the noise would get louder, and was only there when rolling. Is it safe to say that I have a stuck caliper? I think my front right wheel was pretty hot, but im not sure if that was just because of the weather or what. Thanks for any tips

2023.05.31 17:13 JW9403 Home Depot WeatherShield Board vs Local Pressure Treated?

Hey guys

Looking to build some wood fences at my backyard. I live in the NY/NJ region and Id like to source some pressure treated lumber. I need 5/4 deck boards for my system and Im stuck between either using Home Depot's WeatherShield decking board or Pressure treated boards from a local supplier (Kuiken Brothers). They call their SYP (Southern Yellow Pine?) Pressure Treated Select Premium.
I know theres bunch of memes and jokes/stories about how people stay away from HD lumber because they dont want to deal with getting boards that look like curly fries, but the price from HD is arguably 20% cheaper than the local supplier surprisingly so Im trying to weigh out my options.
Additionally, if I were to buy this, Id be buying it online and by the 100s so im not sure how much this would influence the quality/buy. If anyone has any input on this that can help me determine which material to go with that would be great

2023.05.30 04:14 jcubwf56 2017 hardtop jcw clutch sticking

Apologizes if this has been discussed, I searched and couldn’t mind much info. The clutch pedal in my JCW occasionally sticks to the floor for a half second or so. Usually after hard driving. It’s happened maybe a dozen times over the past couple months, pretty infrequent. At first I thought it was getting hung up on the floor mat for just a moment but that wasn’t it. I’m not the most mechanically inclined, but I’m wondering if it could be something to do with transmission fluid? I’ve owned the car since October in NJ so I’m only just starting to see how the car deals in warmer weather. Any thoughts? Thanks!!
