2023.06.01 04:11 dewybitch [IWantOut] 21F USA -> France

I’ve wanted to move to Paris for ages, and after visiting for the first time recently, it’s sealed the deal. My two options are getting a job or getting into a masters program (mostly English, I assume, as I’m nowhere near C1.) I have my bachelors in public health, and am interested in the French public health system.
I’m considering doing freelance remote work in medical writing, but I don’t know how freelance work factors into tax reporting (so I have proof of taxes for apartments and eventual citizenship.) I’m not fluent yet, but I know enough to get around and feel comfortable with the general culture.

2023.06.01 03:42 darthfyer The Clone Wars Complete Series Idea - 30th Anniversary Special Edition #CompleteTheCloneWars Spoilers

Disclaimer - I realise these ideas are probably thrown around time after time, but I wanted to voice my opinion on the potential future of The Clone Wars.
The Clone Wars 30th Anniversary [Star Wars 50th] - The animation is fully re-worked for the entire series to be uniform and be on par with season 7 or Bad Batch.
I realise that re-animating The Clone Wars in its entirety is more of a dream for me and would be an incredibly tall task. It’ll likely never happen. Along the lines of the original trilogy being re-released as special editions, this too could serve as a ‘special edition’ of The Clone Wars as the technology wasn’t available at the time - similar reason to why George updated the OT. No plot points would be changed in existing episodes ala Han and Greedo, just an upgraded visual appearance across the series. Maybe additional details added to the background, like characters or species that have been created since. This could also allow for additional stories to be included in earlier seasons and still aesthetically fit. It would also add more immersive visuals to existing episodes.
8 or 9 seasons. Every episode would be in timeline order. (In the first 4 seasons of The Clone Wars, there are episodes that aired out of order. Some of them several seasons apart from another.) The movie arc would also be incorporated in to season 1.
Existing stories not included in The Clone Wars. These are first priority:
Crystal Crisis on Utapau [This adds clarification to General Grievous’ hideout on Utapau. It also shows the initial intentions for Kyber crystals - later to be used for the Death Star.]
Son of Dathomir [This addresses where Maul has been before we see him in Season 7. It gives better clarity and flow to Maul’s story and the Shadow Collective.]
Dark Disciple [This addresses the conclusion of a core Clone Wars character. Asajj Ventress receives a concluding story that is otherwise not seen visually. While it was incorporated into a book, actual episodes would be crucial.]
Return to Mon Cala [there are canon inconsistencies with Nossor Ri, this arc needs to be reworked]
Return to the Jedi Temple [Inconsistencies with canon with Anakin/Vader. Vader later notes he never knew of the Sith shrine. This could be incorporated into the arc in a way that makes Anakin want to forget or simply made him forget. It otherwise needs to be reworked to not include Anakin. This arc could incorporate Grogu appearing in the background as well as some other Jedi that have been later revealed via flashbacks - Kelleran Bec, Jaro Tapal, etc.]
Yuuzahn Vong [The Yuuzahn Vong are currently not part of canon. So this arc may be best left behind or repurposed into a later series. Post Return of the Jedi ala OG Thrawn Trilogy?]
Bounty Hunter [This is canon due to Boba Fett’s helmet dent and further clarified by Cad Bane’s appearance in post order 66 canon stories. It’s crucial that this is made]
Kashyyyk [This would be a beautiful arc to see. It would also introduce the relationship Yoda has with the Wookiees]
Rex and R2 Top Gun [A fun arc that would be interesting to see realised.]
Additional stories or ideas I’d like to see. These are just stories I feel would help connect the established stories and characters of the ‘new canon’:
Maybe a Thrawn arc. To have visuals of Thrawn’s emergence and also Thrawn, Anakin and Padme on Batuu would be amazing. This has already been written by Timothy Zahn, but animated episodes would be great to see.
Maybe a General Grievous origin story. Not necessarily required, but would make a fascinating story. This wouldn’t have to be an arc, unless it’s incorporated into something else.
Possibly some sort of tie-in or reference to the High Republic? Maybe a throw away line that mentions the Hetzal system and the Legacy Run disaster (I realise that happened 200-300 years prior, but perhaps some sort of event happens and that is mentioned. It would be a great way to acknowledge the High Republic and confirm it is part of the history. Maybe a high Republic logo is seen somewhere in the background in the archives or something?
Maybe another Separatist oriented arc, showing the human side to the Separatists. Maybe Lux is involved? This was already explored, so this isn’t necessarily required.
Another story (not necessarily an arc) that would be nice to see, but not necessary, an origin story of Hera and Chopper. We see the crashed Y-Wing in Rebels, but that’s all we find out. A fleshed out story would be great to see.
An order 66 arc could show how the inquisitors are captured and turned. Not all of them, but maybe a select few? Maybe The Grand Inquisitor as a temple guard as well as another two or three Jedi.
Finally, I’d like to see a story of Barriss Offee and where she ended up. It’d be great to see her as an early inquisitor or some sort of enemy to the inquisitors?
The biggest pitfall with the new or unproduced arcs is the absenge of Tom Kane’s amazing voice talent. There are two ways to go about this. For Yularen and Yoda in particularly, the obvious would be to re-cast the voices. The other is to use the same technology that was used for The Mandalorian to bring back a certain character. The first is cheaper, but the second is more authentic. If a re-cast was to occur, Yularen would need to be incredibly near identical in my opinion.
What other stories would you like to see animated in a completed version of The Clone Wars?

2023.06.01 03:41 ProserpinaFC Recommendations on Arctic Circle information, especially climate and oceanography, expedition history, and just really weird facts

I'm writing a fantasy that takes place in a terraformed Arctic Circle, set about 1890-1940s. That part is tangential. Also, magical. Sea turtle gods willed it. We don't need to discuss that.
I want to do a big fat Arctic Circle literature review, but it's a bit difficult when so much information I find focuses on climate change and other modern issues.
Do you know of books or websites about Arctic geography? Or just any Arctic trivia you'd like to share?
Some things I've noted so far are:
1) Since the Atlantic literally flows into the middle of the Arctic Ocean through the Fram Strait near Greenland, I want the capital of this nation to be within this third. But, since almost all the freshwater rivers are Russian, I want the most population to be agricultural and living in that third. I don't know anything about the last third above Alaska besides that it is melting. Is there anything distinctive about the McKenzie side of the Arctic?
2) How else does the Arctic affect ocean and climate besides "big icebergs good, small icebergs bad"?
3) From what I understand of tectonic plates, the Earth has one big crack down the middle called the Atlantic Ocean that is spreading the plates apart and on the opposite side the Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean is trash compacting crust back inward. Does any of that change at the top of the planet? From maps it looks like the splitting of the plate stops in a curve above Siberia? Seismic maps look crazy. Would a country located in these areas be highly active? (Would it have more earthquakes than Japan? :D)
4) The elephants in the room -- the seasons and the temperature -- Is what I researched first and addressed in this being a fantasy story. But if you have any information anyway, I'd love to have it. I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
5) If I had to choose 2-3 expeditions to read about and understand how people survived travelling through the circle, which should I focus on? I also need to read more about native peoples, so any indigenous references would be appreciated, too. What's the biggest failure or disaster in Arctic history? ... Besides the Titanic.

2023.06.01 03:34 harry-jg How to Pay Hulu Outside in USA

Can't access Hulu outside the United States? It's as if the universe has conspired against you, demanding you provide a US credit card and asking you to physically be in the country. This becomes particularly vexing when you're on a vacation in, say, Paris, and all you want is to binge-watch your favourite show while munching on a croissant. Turns out, renewing your subscription can be as complicated as explaining the plot of a time-travel movie to your grandmother.
So here's the trick: You need a VPN. Hulu, being the sly fox that it is, looks at your IP address to see if you're within the good ol' USA. But a VPN, with its digital cloak of invisibility, lets you masquerade as a Yank, regardless of your actual whereabouts. Meaning, you could be sipping sake in Tokyo or riding a camel in Egypt, but Hulu will think you're eating apple pie in the heartland.
Through diligent labour, my team and I scrutinized over 60 VPNs designed to finagle Hulu's geoblocks. And standing tall among the crowd, we have ExpressVPN. It's the Brad Pitt of VPNs, offering multiple US servers and lightning-fast speeds to let you access Hulu without as much as a hiccup. And just to sweeten the deal, you can take ExpressVPN for a spin without any risk, as it's protected by a 30-day money-back guarantee. If it doesn't tickle your fancy, getting your money back is as easy as pie.
Getting Cozy with Hulu Globally: A VPN's Role in Your Streaming Escapades
Ever tried to access Hulu outside the United States? It's like attempting to communicate with a mime—nearly impossible and often met with an unamused silence. Hulu, with its treasure trove of binge-worthy content, unfortunately, dons an armor of licensing restrictions that keep it securely tethered to the Land of the Free. Its digital gatekeepers, aptly called geoblocks, detect the non-US IP address and give you a digital cold shoulder. And if you thought that's the end of your woes, there's more! Setting up a new Hulu account would need a US credit card, a hurdle that's hard to leap.
In these dire times, one can count on the prowess of a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Picture a VPN as a savvy undercover agent, masterfully disguising your IP address as if you're lounging on a couch somewhere in New York, even when you're actually sunbathing in Barcelona. A VPN juggles your internet traffic, directing it through a server of your choice, thereby replacing your original IP address with a shiny new one from the chosen location. This high-tech sleight of hand can bamboozle streaming platforms into thinking you're within their allowed borders.
In layman's terms, pick a VPN server located in the US and voila! You get a US IP address. When Hulu gazes upon this borrowed IP, it believes you're a proud dweller of Uncle Sam's land, lifting the barriers. Suddenly, signing up, renewing subscriptions, and accessing your beloved Hulu shows become a cakewalk, no matter where on the globe you're perched.
ExpressVPN
Imagine you're trying to sprint a marathon on stilts - pretty inconvenient and unstable, right? Now swap those stilts with a pair of world-class running shoes, and suddenly you're Usain Bolt. That's precisely the upgrade ExpressVPN offers when you're trying to subscribe to Hulu or streaming in Ultra High Definition.
In a test of virtual athleticism, ExpressVPN's New York, Dallas, and Chicago servers gave a stunning performance. Clocking in at an average speed of 91 Mbps, they fell only a hair short of my prime 100 Mbps connection. It’s like running a race and placing a close second to a cheetah. Given that you need merely a humble 25 Mbps to stream in UHD, this VPN crosses the finish line with excessive energy to spare. Even when I indulged in a hair-raising episode of American Horror Story, buffering was a foreign concept.
In addition to its impressive speed, ExpressVPN offers a roster of 24 US locations, akin to a digital buffet of options for connecting to Hulu on your world travels. Even from the other side of the world (9,153 km away, to be exact), my New Jersey server stood like a steadfast guard, ensuring my connection remained unbroken.
What's more, ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer acts as a secret decoder ring, enabling you to watch Hulu on devices that usually don't shake hands with VPNs. PlayStation, Xbox, or even that one smart TV you got at a Black Friday sale years ago; all can be brought into the fold. The setup process was quicker than making a microwave popcorn bag. Simply jot down a code from your ExpressVPN account dashboard, feed it into your smart TV’s network settings, and voila! I found myself catching up on Hulu shows on my antiquated Samsung Tizen TV with no hiccups.
While ExpressVPN might ask for a few more pennies than its fellow VPN services, the sheer performance justifies the price tag. It's like paying extra for a VIP concert ticket - you're assured of the best experience. And with a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can test drive it on Hulu, no strings attached. And if you decide it's not your cup of tea, their customer support is there to process your refund without quibble. They’re rather nice about it, really.
CyberGhostVPN
Picture CyberGhost as the highly competent butler of your digital mansion, ensuring a seamless Hulu streaming experience. This ace up the VPN sleeve not only provides fast and reliable connections but serves them with a silver platter specifically designed for Hulu. Imagine a world where buffering is as extinct as dial-up internet, all thanks to CyberGhost’s Hulu-optimized servers. I frolicked in this paradise while renewing my subscription using their Miami server.
Using CyberGhost's Hulu-optimized servers is like walking through an automatic door; it's a breeze. The interface is as user-friendly as a Labrador puppy. A simple peck on your keyboard typing "Hulu" in the search bar under the "For streaming" tab, and you're given a list of servers that are specially designed to work magic on Hulu. Better still, some of these servers have undergone a digital personal training regimen to optimize their performance for Fire Stick and Android TV specifically.
While CyberGhost may not be as predictably consistent as ExpressVPN, akin to a weather forecast, its connections still hold strong. Think of it like a relay race with the US, UK, and Australia servers, each passing the baton without letting the speed dip below an 82 Mbps average. I was treated to uninterrupted feasts of "Santa Evita" and "House of the Dragon" in Ultra High Definition, without so much as a single awkward pause or hiccup.
Private Internet Access
Imagine a scenario where you have a myriad of IP addresses at your disposal for streaming Hulu like a monarch, that's exactly what PIA offers. This VPN is a playground teeming with server options in the US, reducing your chances of being in the middle of an overcrowded digital mosh pit. Trust me, you'd prefer your own breathing room when renewing your Hulu subscription, which I did with as much ease as butter sliding off a hot knife. With such an extensive server network, you have a buffet of alternative routes should Hulu unexpectedly pull the roadblock on one.
What sets PIA apart from the crowd is its penchant for personalization. Think of it as the bespoke suit of VPN apps. This little wonder comes with an array of widgets that are as flexible as a yoga instructor, ready to twist and bend to suit your interface aesthetic. Additionally, it hands you the reins of encryption, allowing you to choose between the Fort Knox of security - the AES 256-bit encryption, or the slightly more fleet-footed but still quite secure AES 128-bit encryption.
Now, this plethora of customization options could be a bit like being lost in a tech version of Narnia for the newly initiated. It's a lot to take in. But give it a little time, a few exploratory clicks and swipes, and you'll find the app's interface becomes as familiar and easy to navigate as your favorite neighborhood bistro.
Five Secret Passages to Hulu Land Without a US Credit Card in 2023
Juggling through the nuances of signing up for Hulu, especially without a US credit card, can make your head spin faster than a hamster on a wheel. So let's pop the lid off Pandora's box and unveil the five undercover methods to bring Hulu to your fingertips.
Before you sprint into action, let's cross off a couple of quick checks:
Make sure to equip yourself with a VPN. Any VPN on my coveted shortlist should do the trick, but I would tilt my hat towards ExpressVPN. It zips along at breakneck speeds and boasts a generous offering of US servers to select from
Now you're in the right gear, but you need to be in the right place. As Hulu only pays house visits to those who reside in the US (virtually, of course), that's where you should connect.
With these quick checks done and dusted, you're ready to proceed. Brace yourself as we unveil the five secret scrolls to gain access to the tantalizing world of Hulu.
MyGiftCardSupply: Your Key to Unlock Hulu's Magic Box
A Hulu gift card from MyGiftCardSupply is your golden ticket to the land of unlimited entertainment.
Step 1: Buying a ticket. Venture into the online bazaar of MyGiftCardSupply, and procure a Hulu gift card ranging from $25 to $100. The amount depends on how deep you want to dive into the ocean of Hulu content. Be sure to sign up if you haven't already - think of it as a friendly handshake.
Step 2: Sniff out the code. Once the gift card purchase is complete, you'll receive an email with the precious code. Open it, and gently copy the code.
Step 3: Claim your prize. Stride confidently to Hulu's redemption page, type in your hard-earned code, and create your account. Do remember to use a US address and zip code when signing up – they are quite particular about that.
Step 4: Let the show begin. Slide into Hulu's log-in page and gently type in your shiny new credentials.
Step 5: The Grand Finale. Now it's time to sit back, relax, and bask in the glory of endless entertainment on Hulu. Step into your personal streaming universe and enjoy the show!
Hitching a Ride on iTunes US: Your Unconventional Route to Hulu
Now, let's stroll down a different route, this time, a path known as 'iTunes US.'
Step 1: Set up camp in the Land of Apple. Visit Apple's website and pitch your digital tent by creating a new account. Consider this your personal American outpost in the universe of iTunes.
Step 2: Stock up on provisions. Replenish your digital coffers either directly through iTunes or via a US iTunes gift card, which is akin to your secret stash of apple cider in the cellar.
Step 3: Summon Hulu. Type "Hulu" into the search bar and download the app. Much like calling a pet, it'll come running and install itself onto your device.
Step 4: Enter the realm of Hulu. Use your iTunes funds to either get a shiny new plan or renew an existing subscription, and then log into your Hulu account. This is you officially checking into the grand Hulu Hotel.
Step 5: Savour the spectacle. With all these steps complete, you're now in a position to pay for and enjoy your Hulu account. It's time to kick back and indulge in the smorgasbord of entertainment that Hulu has to offer.
Hopping onto the Hulu Train with a Prepaid US Card: A Thrifty Globetrotter's Guide
Let's now venture down a pragmatic avenue, namely the 'Prepaid US Card' route.
The first station is "Prepaid US Card Central". You'll need to navigate your way to VISA or MasterCard, where you can choose your ticket – the prepaid card.
Next, we arrive at "Funds Station". Here, you need to fuel up your prepaid card. This can be done directly or by transferring money from your bank account, given that your card of choice supports such cheery transfers.
Having acquired your ticket and made sure it's packed with funds, it's time to board the Hulu Express at the "Hulu Account Terminal". Here, you'll need to check-in, select a subscription plan, and jot down the necessary particulars.
We're almost there. The last stop before you start your entertainment journey is "Registration Point". Here, you pay for the service using your shiny new prepaid card. Now, if this doesn't work for some reason, perhaps the ticket machine is being obstinate, don't fret – just try the gift card method instead.
With the ticketing process complete, you're all set to start watching. It's time to sit back, kick off your shoes, and let the Hulu Express whisk you away into a world of non-stop entertainment, right outside of the USA.
PayPal Your Way to Hulu Paradise: A Modern Maverick's Approach
Welcome to the "PayPal method", a trail favored by modern mavericks, digital nomads, and online shopping aficionados.
Begin this journey by constructing your own digital finance fortress – a PayPal account. You'll need to swing by PayPal and ensure you're setting up a US account. Now, it's imperative that you get this right, because Hulu can be a bit snobbish when it comes to foreign PayPal accounts. If setting up a US PayPal account starts to feel like trying to lasso a greased pig, simply revert to our old reliable – the gift card method.
Having established your PayPal account, you're now ready for the next leg of the journey. Head on over to Hulu, strut your stuff, and log in using your credentials.
Next up, it's time to pay the piper... or rather, the subscription. If your account is a newborn, fresh out of the internet womb, you can also kick off a free trial.
With these steps accomplished, it's time to kick back and start watching. Dive headlong into the ocean of your favorite Hulu shows, and swim around in the thrill of it all.
StatesCard: Your Magic Carpet Ride to Hulu Bingeing
Behold, the wonders of StatesCard, the 21st-century magic carpet ride to the land of Hulu bingeing!
Your journey starts at the port of StatesCard, where you'll need to carve out your digital presence by clicking the "Sign Up" button. Having successfully become a part of the club, add a little bit of that digital money to make it official.
Your next stop is Hulu. Log in with your carefully crafted credentials or take a bold step and create a whole new identity for yourself (strictly on Hulu, of course).
Once settled in, it's time to pay the virtual ferryman. Use the card information you secured from your new friend, StatesCard, to pay for or renew your Hulu subscription. If you do this right, you'll have successfully purchased your ticket to endless entertainment.
Having accomplished these milestones, you're now fully armed and ready to embark on the Hulu adventure. Sit back, relax, and let the world of your favorite Hulu shows envelop you.

2023.06.01 03:24 swim1amy Single mom in a hateful red state

I am at a breaking point and have been for awhile and there’s nowhere to turn for help. I’ve always been proactive about my mental health. I grew up in an abusive family and went no contact when I was 20, so I’ve always been aware of the impact of my depression and I have always done what I could to see therapists and work on my issues. Issues are not the problem now - the system is.
I live in a red meat, right-to-work state. When Trump was elected, I cried because I knew that so many people were going to suffer, including me. I left my narcissistic husband in 2018. I saw my business and my industry die during the pandemic. I could not get a PPP loan. My ex stopped paying child support and I racked up $7K in debt. I paid it off but I am still not making enough to live and have racked up another $6K more, all while working full time. There’s no healthcare, no childcare, no affordable housing. I got $12K in rent assistance in HOPE grants, but I have to pay back $5200 because my landlord screwed up the paperwork and threatened to make me pay it back or evict me. It’s all totally legal too.
I’m on food stamps but I only get $26 a month. A charity called my work to verify my income so it’s embarrassing and hard to go to work now. I can’t move out of my neighborhood because I can’t afford anything within 45 minutes and I’m locked into staying here because I have to pay my landlord back for the HOPE grant.
There’s an abortion clinic at the end of my street and the anti-abortion protesters are just giddy at the new laws in my state. They’ve been causing accidents and near misses at my intersection on a daily basis. I complained to the police and ended up on their hit list somehow. They’ve photographed my license plate, sent people to follow me back to my apartment and video me going inside, and approach my kid. I complained to the police again but they can’t do anything unless they try to physically harm me or my kid. So now my kid isn’t allowed to play outside anymore.
But the worst part is trying to get mental healthcare. There’s nothing available and now that I am back on Medicaid, my prescriber conveniently ditched me and no one will take me. I went to the hospital to get a bridge prescription until they had an opening and they threatened to commit me. One of the meds I was on, Concerta, is a controlled substance and they accused me of drug seeking behavior. I told them upfront that going off it suddenly was causing suicidal ideation but that I wasn’t in danger of acting on it. I said this because anytime you even mention the S word, they threaten to call someone to haul you away. I also said that I had been assaulted in the state hospital and would never go back there, so please don’t threaten me with that either. But after waiting 3 hours of waiting they just threatened me with hospitalization. I left without a prescription and now I have no refills and no prescriber.
I am in a really dark place. I can’t call for help. I can’t get any help at all. I am constantly spiraling and all I can do is put one foot in front of the other day after day with no break in sight. I can just barely pay my bills but I can’t save money to leave. All I can do is just keep on for my kid, and even though I have a good kid, it’s still hard to be a parent with no support system and no future.
I swear this country hates women, especially single moms.

2023.06.01 03:20 Rangtangtangtang I’m playing this game for the first time properly, and it’s pretty good

I never really followed the game before and up to release apart from the massive outcry that came from the unplayable state of the game at its release, only now, I’m playing it, that I see why so many people got so excited for this game. It’s good, with plenty of glitches and bugs still in, but good, what gets to me though is looking up if you can do something as simple as changing the visuals of cyberware and being told “mods”. It feels like even now nearly 3 years after release the game still feels like a shell of what the game could’ve been, and that saddens me

2023.06.01 02:55 Crypto-Arab Everything is crumbling

Hey everyone,
I hope you're all doing well. I just wanted to take a moment to share what's been going on in my life lately. It's been a tough journey since I joined the unemployment bandwagon, and I could really use some support right now.
About nine months ago, I was unexpectedly fired from a high-level job that I had only been working at for three months. It was the most prestigious and highest-paying job I've ever had, so it hit me hard. Unfortunately, my boss let me go without any clear reason, and although I was able to collect unemployment for 20 weeks, that support has now dried up.
Since then, I've been tirelessly applying to countless jobs, but all I've received are rejection emails or worse, ghosting. It's disheartening, especially considering my education with an MBA and eight years of relevant work experience in my field. I've even contemplated applying to jobs I never thought I would, like McDonald's, just to make ends meet. On the other hand, if I hold off for another three months, I can reapply for unemployment. It's a tough decision to make, and I'm unsure how to proceed.
Adding to the challenges, three weeks after being terminated, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called ulcerative colitis. I can't help but believe that the stress from my previous job played a role in triggering it. Understanding this disease and adapting to its limitations has been a struggle, and it's only worsened by my worries about the long-term implications.
And if that wasn't enough, my long-term girlfriend of 10 years and I are going through some major relationship issues. This isn't directly related to my unemployment situation, but it seems like everything is falling apart at once. Neglected relationship issues from the past are resurfacing, and it feels like we might be nearing the end of the road.
Honestly, my whole world feels like it's crashing down on me. Everything I've worked so hard for is slipping away, and I feel powerless to stop it. I am seeing a therapist to help me navigate these challenges, but progress has been painstakingly slow. There are times when I wish I could turn back time and make a few different choices that would have led to a completely different outcome.
I apologize for the rant, but I just needed to get all of this off my chest. If anyone has any advice or supportive words, I would greatly appreciate it. Sometimes it helps to know that others have gone through similar struggles and come out the other side. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and feel free to drop a comment if you'd like to share anything.
Stay strong, everyone.

2023.06.01 02:53 AslandusTheLaster Graylight hunters

Original prompt: [WP] You see the beast in front of you, illuminated by a streetlamp, does it really think you're too stupid to realize it wants you to see it? Before you could react one of the newbies takes a shot at the creature. (link)
It was dark out. Pitch black, really, apart from the street lights that were too far away to offer any helpful level of illumination. John and Theresa were at the flanks, with the rookie in the back. What was the kid's name again? It slipped my mind, but I might try to remember if he survived the mission... Though that was a big "if".
As the darkness grew nearly suffocating, the visage of a face emerged from its inky depths. Though the circumstances made it quite unsettling, it could be seen as almost comical in the daylight, a big goofy smile a child might draw onto a stick figure as they pretended to take notes for a class they didn't care about. Aside from the location, the fact that the face appeared to be hovering about twelve feet in the air gave it an uncanny air that was almost certainly trouble. It wouldn't have even been visible yet without the night vision on my visor, so I was willing to bet the face couldn't properly see us yet. Well, if it needed to see at all.
Suffice to say, I'd read the docket, and knew that the face tended to be benign until acknowledged, so I simply gestured behind my back and continued walking as I had. John and Theresa sent a quick confirmation over the comms, but the rookie did not. To be expected, really, he was fresh out of training and hadn't gotten our routines down yet, so I kept moving.
I kept sweeping as I had been, with John and Theresa doing the same, but then I heard a scream and the rattle of gunfire. I turned to see the rookie firing in the direction of the face. We couldn't even see the body around it, if there was one, so the shots seemed to be pretty wild. The face got even more creepy in response, with inky black ooze dripping down from the eyes and mouth, and the smile getting wider and wider, well beyond the limits of human physiology.
When the mouth started reaching the edges of the face, the rookie dropped his gun and started clawing at his face. He tore off his helmet, coughing, scratching, and wiping his face with his gloved hands as dark fluid poured out of his tear ducts and the edges of his mouth.
I just sighed, turned around, and shot the kid in the head with my rifle. A shame, but I had warned him to study that docket like his life depended on it.
John and Theresa gasped at the kid's death, but more from surprise than shock. It wasn't the first time we'd had to put down a fresh recruit, and it probably wouldn't be the last.
"Commissioner's gonna read me the riot act for that one. Stay together, heads on a swivel," I said, waving my rifle back and forth as if I was still searching.
The face was now about ten feet closer, well within visible distance and easily within range of the rifle. Not that it would do much good to shoot it, or the rookie would probably still be alive. Instead I kept moving, and the face got so close I could practically poke it with the end of the gun. It sidled off and seemingly floated past Jon, then Ophelia as we walked.
Finally, clawed hands started reaching out from the darkness. Inky black, obviously, and nigh impossible to see compared to the face, but they may have been connected to the actual beast instead of a lure meant to trick victims. Still, I kept up the act of pretending I couldn't see them. As the claws got close I stopped, bending down as if I was checking something on the ground.
I had a hand on my knee, where I had stashed one of my knives, the one I'd covered in Graylight fluid, and ran my hand over the dirt. My eyes, however, were still turned forward to spy the ground where the claws were creeping toward us.
"Hm... Which way did it go?" I asked nobody. John and Theresa could almost certainly see the encroaching hands.
As the nearest hand got within striking distance, it began to rear back, and I grabbed my knife. The hand flew forward, and got a blade through its palm as it attempted to grab me.
A horrific shriek erupted from all around us, and the hand recoiled, tearing the knife from it as it went. Still, it was too late, a grayish glow flowed in a veinlike pattern from the knife wound, up the arm, and fanned out into the darkness around it. The pale face reappeared high in the air, an apparently small part of the beast itself, but quickly seemed to melt as the graylight etched its way there.
With another cry that faded into nothingness, the inky black ooze turned gray, and the moving parts of the creature collapsed to the ground.
"Jon, call cleanup. Theresa, cover me," I said, approaching the gray form.
I pulled a sheet of paper out of my pocket and wiped it over the ooze, getting a thick coating of it onto the page. As I had hoped, it seemed inert, so I returned to my comrades.
"Shame about the rookie," Theresa said as I returned.
"Shame about our training, knowing how to shoot doesn't so much good if you don't know when," I said. "Thank God one of these demons actually does something useful."
"That indeed," Theresa said, patting the pocket she kept her bottle of graylight fluid in. "But don't you even feel bad about the kid?"
"I feel bad about a lot of things, but he was about to get overtaken. Once I get promoted to working solo this'll be your job, so you've got to be willing to make calls like that when it counts," I said.
"Yippee..." Theresa said, sounding even more exhausted than she had less than a minute prior.
"Cleanup's on the way," John said, interrupting out scintillating conversation.
"Good," I said. "Then let's get out of here, we've got another operation tomorrow and you two need to get some shuteye."
"What about you, sir?" John asked.
"I don't sleep anymore," I said, punctuating the statement by pulling a shot of caffeine out of my pocket and downing it in front of my teammates. "Now let's go."

2023.06.01 02:53 myfirstgold 3 months to move

I (28m) got paralyzed almost 3 years ago. I can't move from my chest down. I moved in with my big brother and his wife who had their child 2.5 years ago. I've lived here since the end of my time in physical rehab. We're in Michigan. I'm at the point now where I can be independent, and drive. And I have my own van. But I have some recurring medical issues that have kept me from working. I'll never walk again, I'm a t6 complete spinal chord injury. I have bad spasticity in my legs all the time and occasional bladder issues that lead to urinary incontinence frequently. Plus I've just been a shell of the man I used to be before. My mental state is fucking broken. I'm pretty withdrawn in myself. My brother wants me out of his place in 3 months. He said he's not wanting to get papers or courts involved but effectively I'm being evicted in 3 months. Whatever, no hard feelings it's his house. I pay him rent keep common areas clean and try my hardest to be a good and invisible house mate. but he needs the space in his spare room more than he wants the money and I probably barely cover the costs of living here with what I can afford to give him I guess. Idk I just can't afford an apartment, I get social security but it's less per month than most places charge for just rent near here and most places are not wheelchair accessible. Idk wtf to do. I need help. I applied at a few places in February that said it was likely going to be a six month wait. Idk if that's going to happen. What the fuck do you do when you have nothing? I never thought I'd be so far down this hole. I can't believe I broke my back and survived just to have such limited options and shit prospects. Disability in this country is a trap.

2023.06.01 02:44 smoothestconcrete Short-Term Lease Apartments Near Mauston/Wisconsin Dells?

I will be on a short work assignment at a facility in Mauston starting next month through the end of the year. I have had zero luck finding a place that has availability and also offers a six-month lease. I've only really looked on the popular apartment websites such as apartments.com and Apartment Guide.
I'll be able to find a place in Madison if nothing else works about, but obviously I'd like to avoid an hour commute if possible. Anyone know if something that might not necessarily be easily come across online?

2023.06.01 02:34 AslandusTheLaster Muffin the Blobcat

Original prompt: [WP]: You reach for a bowl of flour, and a little clawed paw taps out at you - it wasn't flour, it was your cat sleeping in a bowl. You reach for a towel, your cat again. Whatever Gertrude really is, she's not very good at impersonating a cat. (link)
I arrived at Cassie's apartment in the early evening, just as the sun was beginning to set. The horizon was a lovely shade of reddish-purple, and I could hear the last cries of birds coming home to roost.
Cassie opened the door before I finished knocking, dressed in a warm hoodie instead of one of the dresses she'd worn on our first four dates.
"Jesse! You're early! Come on in," Cassie said, holding the door for me.
"Thanks, Cassie," I said. "What can I say? I wanted to help out with dinner. So what are we making?"
"Oh... Well, I'd been planning to make chili, but I forgot to get started this morning, so I was getting ready to make beef stew instead," she said.
"Cool, just tell me what to do," I said, stepping inside.
I followed Cassie into the kitchen, where she began explaining the recipe. It was a simple process, chopping vegetables and meat, pan-searing, then simmering them all for two to three hours, more than enough time to watch a movie or two on Netflix before it was time to eat.
As I reached for the knife to get to work, Cassie grabbed my wrist.
"Jesse! Wash your hands!" she said.
"Ah, right, sorry," I said.
I lathered my hands up with soap, scrubbing away the day's grime, before rinsing it all down the drain. Then, as I reached for the black and white checkered towel hanging next to the sink, a pair of paws reached out and grabbed my wrist. I jumped back, attempting to withdraw my hand. Instead of letting go, the paws just sort of... stretched, the fuzzy arms lengthening as they were dragged out of the towel, until they were nearly three feet long, at which point I stopped pulling back.
"Uh, Cassie?" I asked.
"Oh no! Muffin! Stop that!" she said, lightly tapping the back of one of the paws.
Both the paws immediately let go, snapping back toward the towel, which went from the checkered pattern to a dull striped one.
"I'm sorry, she does this sometimes..." Cassie said. "Hey! No! Get out of there!"
I followed her eyes, and saw that the entire carpet for the apartment now bore a checkered pattern, which quickly withdrew onto one of the fuzzy pillows on the couch. From the pillow, a small rounded paw emerged, grabbing the edge of the sofa and dragging the checkered pattern off of the pillow, which formed a chubby, bloblike body standing on four rounded legs. Though I could identify a sectioned part of the blob that was presumably a head, it lacked any features one would conventionally associate with a face, save for a slit across the front that could arguably resemble a mouth.
The blob creature trotted up to us, wiggling its body before leaping at Cassie. She caught the creature, hugging it tightly as its limbs bent at unnatural angles that suggested they lacked any form of skeletal structure.
"Aw, hey Muffin... Yes, mommy loves you," Cassie said, swaying the creature back and forth.
The slit in Muffin's face opened like the mouth of a puppet, filled with what appeared to be sewing needles and containing no visible throat, and let out a terrible sound. Despite the feline body language the creature was using, the sound was not like the mewling of a cat, but more like the shrieking cry of a child with their arm caught in a wood chipper.
"No, I just fed you an hour ago," Cassie said, looking over at a small dish in the corner of the kitchen, next to another bowl containing water. Though the center of the dish was bare, there was still a decent amount of dry cat food sitting around its edges. "Look, you still have food! If you're hungry, just go eat!"
"Okay, I have to ask," I said. "What is that?"
"Oh my god, you're still here. Most guys I bring home flee the building as soon as they see Muffin," Cassie said.
There was a small lull after she spoke, and I could hear what I assumed was meant to be Muffin purring, but it sounded more like the roar of a motorcycle engine in the midst of severe mechanical problems. I reached out to pet the creature, and it pressed its "head" into my palm, attempting to lick my hand. When one describes a cat's tongue as being like sandpaper, it generally doesn't refer to the actual abrasion it causes to the skin, but this was clearly not a normal cat.
"I'll be honest, in terms of weird dates, this doesn't even break the top five for me," I said.
"...I think that deserves some elaboration, but I guess I should start: I kind of just found Muffin at the animal shelter pretending to be a bed, and she came home on my handkerchief, so now she lives here," Cassie said. "She's a sweetheart, really, but she's... kinda weird. Come on, Mommy needs her hands."
Cassie dropped Muffin onto the carpet, which seemed to absorb the checkered creature as if it were water. Muffin popped out of the couch, landing in a sort of puddle upon its cushions before pulling itself onto the floor and stumbling back toward us. Its smooth, padless paws slid across the tile floor of the kitchen, leaving the creature flopping onto its belly until Cassie picked her up again and carefully placed her back on the couch.
"Just stay here, okay?" she said to Muffin, before returning to the kitchen and beginning to wash her hands. "Before you ask, no I don't know why she insists on trying to act like a cat."
"Cool... So, how finely do we need to chop these carrots?" I asked.
Cassie breathed a sigh of relief, and we began making dinner in earnest.

2023.06.01 02:31 New-Illustrator-9351 Soundproofing a bedroom by building a smaller room inside it

I want to "soundproof" my bedroom from the outside but also from noises that comes through the building structure. They messed it up and I can hear people dropping things or closing doors from any floor or direction. It's the only apartment available near my university and it's where I'll be staying for the next 4 years.
I don't want to build on my walls but instead make a room inside my room, if that makes sense. I got the idea from a friend who has an audio room. When I move out I can reuse the materials too since I hate noise :)
Without making some weird monstrosity and still looking like a room, how should I go about that? Drywall with fiberglass insulation, but how about the window (that would reach the one on my real wall), electrical connections?
The apartment floor is porcelain tile.

2023.06.01 02:24 Prudent-Ad486 Need Encouragement...Feel unstable and tossed to and fro.

Hello all,
I am in need of some brotherly encouragement on two main things. I am sorry if this post is long, but I have dealt with this for a while.

Thing One: I have felt seared lately...like my conscience is broken. I need help understanding how to soften my heart again and really LOVE the word, God, and the Faith.
Thing Two: The Faith seems very...complicated to me lately. I feel like I have abandoned the doctrine of perspicuity and have delved into a VERY heady faith.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thing One Explanation:
Prior to my conversion I was a chronic feeder of my flesh in just about every way that I could have been in my situation. Lust, Gluttony, and a lack of Order in my life. I would stay up through the night, every night, doing ANYTHING my heart desired and it just seared my really badly. Now, as a Christian, I desperately WANT to believe the Bible's teaching that God looks upon me as righteous in Christ...but it is hard to believe. Most times I don't even feel like I am capable of repenting hard enough...of FEELING BAD ENOUGH. I just want to be able to cry over my sin again. I worry that I have become complacent in my walk and, although the frequency of my sins has drastically lowered, and my lifestyle has hugely improved, I find that I see my progress slowing and that scares me. I have read all of the books on freedom from Lust, reclaiming Christian Masculinity, done the counseling, used the phone apps, done the Bible studies...but I see only marginal changes in my life recently. Sin just seems to find a way in me...and I am broken over how NOT broken I am about that. I find myself angry at how unphased I have been lately. I pray each day that God would soften my heart...but I worry that this means I am NOT ELECT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thing Two Explanation:
When I got converted I had 1000000 questions that I wanted answered...was I supposed to be Catholic? Wesleyan? Reformed? Independent? How does God work sovereignty through sin? How do I share the Gospel? What is the philosophical bent of the Bible? On and on and on it went until I had satisfactory answers (by worldly standards) for most, if not all, of the pressing questions that I had. Lately, after viewing some debates with Muslims, Jews, and others, I am feeling again like my faith is "Just another ancient-near-eastern belief system that shares its history and mythos with the Mesopotamians et. al. I miss the uniqueness that I felt as a Christian...I guess I feel like I have so analyzed the faith and picked it apart from every angle...that it just doesn't feel as simple anymore. It feels EXTREMELY complicated and hard to parse. I feel like I just cannot know how God really feels about me or the world and it is causing me worry and...honestly some shame.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TLDR: I have been a Christian for a few years now and I am worried that I am becoming cynical, complacent, and backsliding into the sins of my past. I don't want to be jaded towards my life of faith...I want to be on fire, repentant, and loving towards God.

Am I alone here?
