2023.06.02 18:23 Known-Damage-7879 Accepting that teaching wasn’t for me
Hi, so I’m not sure if my background fits here, but I got an education degree about 10 years ago, but never really used it. After getting my degree I only subbed once and basically just did unrelated jobs.
I remember during my third year of university when we got to the actual teaching courses finding it boring and unfulfilling. I think I pursued teaching because my grandma was a teacher and I looked up to her.
During my student teaching practicums I basically decided that teaching isn’t for me. I get stressed out easily and am also kind of a quiet guy. The idea of being “on” for 8 hours of the day was not something I looked forward to.
I figured maybe I’d pursue teaching when I was a little older and had more experience with the world, but I’ve found that I haven’t changed that much in my basic disposition since my early 20s. I still am introverted, still don’t like performing in front of people for long periods of time, and teaching still doesn’t seem to be something that I’m passionate about.
Despite all this I still have a part of myself that wishes I could give teaching another try to prove it wasn’t a waste of time or something? I think this might just be the sink cost fallacy, I regret wasting my time and money on something that I never really pursued. The last few years I’ve thought about making a bunch of money teaching up north, but then the reality of the job hits and I decide not to.
I think I have to get over the sunk cost fallacy, what do you think?

2023.06.02 18:20 Troll-e-poll-e-o-lee Fall 2024 hopeful. Should I even apply? 31M First Gen URM w/unusual path. 670 GMAT. Be honest w/my chances.
Brief-ish background (more detail on some of the career description below).Grew up in the southwest. Not very good options as far as schools and career paths post college (it’s all operations and warehouses). Could have probably gotten into better undergrads but as a first-gen student (parents not from US), I didn’t really understand the importance of college choice for career path nor what career paths were out there.
Post graduation I worked at an insurance firm since it was the first role I was offered. Didn’t really like it but stayed about a year.
Worked at an investment management firm as a broker. Stayed for 21 months. The role was a call center environment and was not a good fit for what I was looking for. Struggled to get a promotion. Was ultimately fired
Took a job not long after doing the same thing at another broker. Was there for about 10 months. Was also fired over a weird reason elaborated further below but the broker sold their practice to a larger broker-dealer which I think factored in the decision.
After this I was feeling pretty down and lacking confidence in finding a career in business. I decided to try my hand at Computer Science and studied math and computer science at a local community college. Took a night shift job to cover cost of living after a semester. COVID hit and I decided it was best to not take hard math and computer science classes in an online environment.
After much deliberation, I explored and decided to attend a Masters in Finance program as a mini-MBA. I found a program that would suit me well and still had in-person options. Graduated in a year.
Accepted a job offer at a regional bank (in the S&P 500) working in Corporate Finance; specifically Corporate Profitability Analytics. The role is more data related and has me using SQL, Power BI, and other data related software/programs in addition to Excel. Currently 1.5 years in. Have been doing well and hoping to be able to gain a promotion soon although the company is sort of cheap when it comes to this sort of thing. While I don’t mind my current work, it is niche and not something I find particularly interesting outside of the skillset I’ve been able to gain.
If I weren’t considering applying to an MBA I’d probably start searching for other opportunities, however, I also realize that with my pre-MSF experience, the job hopping doesn’t look good and there will be more benefit to sticking with the company for almost 3 years at the start of the program and having a promotion under my belt.
MBA Info
· Why I want an MBA:
· Short-term I’m hoping to pivot into management/strategy consulting for my longer-term goal of being able to be a leader in my community. I would want to pivot into starting my own non-profit firm where I help members of low-income communities and URM owned businesses grow with the knowledge I gain from my consulting experience. I also think consulting would help with my eclectic nature and help with preventing the need to job hop given constantly being in new environments (probs wont mention this in an application though)
· Why I want one now:
· My current role is pretty niche in the banking industry. I’m afraid of being pigeonholed and the skillset I’m gaining, while desirable, isn’t necessarily one I see that aligns with my long-term goals.
· Target schools:
· Planning to apply through Consortium. Columbia (reach), Tuck, Yale, NYU, UVA, Rochester (safety school). Also open to applying outside of Consortium or changing the schools I apply to if better fit is recommended.
Background
· Work experience (starting from most recent)
· Nov 2021-Present; Corporate Financial Analyst at regional bank in S&P 500*.*
· I work in Corporate Profitability Analytics. While my title is a Financial Analyst, skillset wise, I would say my role is closer to a data analyst. I utilize SQL, Power BI, Excel, and other software to help develop, design and refine models to allow the bank to conduct data driven research in regards to the profitability of the bank. I develop and maintain reports and dashboards to disseminate information to executives and other relevant stakeholders and field questions and concerns related to the information.
· Oct 2020 – Aug 2020; Masters in Finance student at a state school
· This served as a mini-MBA for me. In my previous roles prior to this program, I was a bad fit as the roles were far too customer service oriented and led to me being fired from 2 of the roles and me quitting before I could be fired from another.
· December 2019 – July 2020 Bi-Lingual Fraud Representative at a large Credit Card Company (Capital One/DiscoveAmex type)
· This was a role I took on while I was considering a career switch into Computer Science/Financial Engineering. The role was a night shift and allowed me to work while taking classes.
· Left the role on my own terms as I wanted time to prepare for my Masters in Finance program
· Aug 2019 – March 2019; Math/Comp Sci student at community college
· Attended a local community college where I was majoring in Math/Computer Science as I was considering a career switch during a crisis of confidence. Took math, programming and engineering classes while attending. COVID struck during second semester and decided that taking a STEM heavy course load online was not optimal for me.Around this time, I decided to look into MBA’s and Masters in Finance programs. One MBA program (Rochester) really wanted me to apply there, but overall, I felt the MSF suited me better for my experience and where I was at in life. It would allow me to keep the MBA in the back pocket for any other potential switches.
· Oct 2018 – Jul 2019; Licensed Investment Professional at a Broker-Dealer
· Worked as a Series 7 and Series 63 licensed contractor. The company is large and serves a specified client base but did not have a large broker-dealer segment. Took a hands-on approach in all aspects of wealth and asset management: consulting and educating investors in mutual fund options and other products to help meet financial goals.
· Consistently led entire department in relationship management and engagement metrics: survey responses, survey scores, and new business development through sales referrals to advisory consultants in a fast-paced environment
· Consistently led entire department in operations and efficiency metrics while exceeding accuracy requirements and adhering to legal compliance through attention to detail
· Ended up being fired after a client complained to a friend of his in the Board of Directors that I wouldn’t help them with something that was not possible. The company ended up being bought out by a larger broker-dealer during that same month and they had been letting contractors expire w/out being renewed. I am under the impression they were downsizing regardless. I understand this section is speculative and would most likely omit it from any actual application.
·
· Nov 2016 – Aug 2018; Licensed Investment Professional at a top Broker-Dealer (PIMCO/Vanguard/Schwab type)
· Similar functional duties as other broker-dealer. In addition to those duties, demonstrated leadership and ability to work collaboratively through training and development of new hires, presentation of materials and investment methodology for new hires in multiple meetings, coaching, and mentorship of peers
· Voluntarily cross-trained and developed skills from higher level departments in order to liaison with those departments and assist in their service levels and learn new skills
· Consistently led the department in efficiency metrics such as calls taken and average handle time while maintaining high accuracy
· Ended up being placed on a performance improvement plan without warning and subsequently fired by my manager not long after. This happened after she found out I was looking into other companies as I was feeling dissatisfied with my lack of promotion. I had talked about seeking other roles within the company that would be less customer service oriented and she said she was supportive of that. When I would apply to jobs that were more in line with what I was looking for in the company, I would get great feedback from the interviewers. They would then ask my current manager for feedback and after that I would seemingly get rejected. I understand this section is speculative and would most likely omit it from any actual application.
· Aug 2015 – Jul 2016 Workers Compensation Insurance Adjuster at a top firm (Travelers/Hartford/Zurich type)
· Under minimal supervision interpreted and applied insurance contract policies exercising sound judgment in order to quickly reach outcome of fraud investigation while still maintaining high quality and meeting regulatory audits and requirements.
· Knowledgeable point of reference and correspondence for witnesses, agents, other insurance companies, medical providers, attorneys, and others.
· Utilized discipline, self-motivation and strong organizational skills to properly handle multiple tasks for proper case management of existing claims as a full caseload was often 100+ claims.
· Worked with internal partners on a special project to help conduct and report data driven risk analysis by identifying patterns and industry trends and researching strategies to reduce negative trends; provided qualitative feedback/analysis as an adjuster.
· Consistently led the department in client survey feedback in both number of survey responses and survey scores (never received less than a 9). Won the monthly competition 7 of the 8 months it was in place.
· Left on my own terms. Realized early on into the job that the insurance industry was not interesting to me nor where I wanted to be. Once I received a job offer from an Investment Management company, I put in my two weeks.
· Extra curriculars and other experience:
· I’m a religious individual. During undergrad I was very involved with my church in its ministry and even interned there. Since graduating, I have been heavily involved in youth ministry in poor areas that are heavily minority. I have a particular calling to kids of these backgrounds because I used to from a similar background and know many of them don’t see enough positive male role models who have been able to overcome many of the trappings that growing up in less-than-optimal conditions can provide. In this role, I am able to connect with youth and facilitate conversation about life, faith, and development with them.
· I also serve as a member of the Finance Council and Development Advisory Board of a local church. In these roles I take part in creating and monitoring budgeting and finances of the church as well as developing ideas to raise revenue and seek out potential tithing partners.
· Undergrad school/major:
· State School ranked outside of top 200. Double majored in Political Science and Business Economics
· Chose to attend there due to full-ride scholarships. Did not realize the importance of choosing certain colleges for certain career paths
· Other education/coursework:
· Masters in Finance at state school w/top 50 business program
· Graduated with a 3.5 GPA
· Race/nationality:
· Primarily Hispanic (mixed w/other minorities but not sure how it classifies)
· Sex:
· M
Stats
· GMAT Score: Include breakdown
· 670 (42q/40v). Looking/probably need to retake as it may expire soon. Think I can score 700+ since I took this before taking math/computer science classes at community college
· Undergrad GPA:
· 3.41 for Bachelors. (3.6 at community college)
· Grad School GPA
· 3.5

I appreciate everyone in this sub Reddit. I haven’t posted anything here yet but I have read a lot. I have been working on a book for the last several months and I have 28,200 words. I would like to share one of my chapters to get feedback.
This is chapter 8
My father was a chief of police and several other members of my family were in law enforcement. I had been raised around and amongst police officers since I was very young and the seeds had been planted in my heart to follow in my father’s footsteps. I dropped out of high school in my junior year because I was utterly failing in my academics and frankly had no interest. I was working at Marvin’s IGA grocery store for most of the time when I was 17. After I turned 18 however, I began to look for a more serious job. My dad had heard that the local jail was hiring and that they would hire at 18 years of age. He explained that the jail was typically the first step on the path on starting a career in law enforcement and that many cops he knew had spent a year or two working at the jail before becoming police officers. In February of 2008 I applied and in early March I began a pre-employment screening process. This consisted of a background check and a polygraph test. I had never been criminally in trouble so the background check went fine. I am sure some of them had heard about my UFO 911 call but it was never mentioned to me if they had. As I walked into the administration side of the Sheriff’s Office, I could feel my heart pounding against my chest. I knew what was waiting for me - a dreaded polygraph test. The room was small, and the only thing between me and the stern-looking lieutenant was a desk. But what caught my attention was the intimidating chair in front of the desk, with various sensors and attachments ready to measure my every physical response. The lieutenant welcomed me, but his tone was stern as he explained that this was a mandatory test for all recruits seeking employment at the facility. The silence in the room was deafening, and the air was thick with tension. I knew that this moment would determine my future, and I could not help but wonder, would I pass the test or fail? I had been previously told what sorts of questions would be on the test. Several of which I knew I would have to lie on. Especially if they asked if I had ever used illegal drugs as I had smoked marijuana with friends by this point. I had been quite a book reader at this point in my life all ready and at one point I had read about how to fool a polygraph test and it essentially went like this. To fool the polygraph sensors, you have to believe your own lies. The sensors are looking for physiological signs of deception, guilt, anticipation anything of that sort. So, you must not view your answers as lies. There has to be an agreement in my mind already that the entire thing is a farce. This man is not really trying to read me, this is simply a round about way of filling out a form in his possession and I am putting the answers as I want them to appear on the form. So, in my heart this is no a question of true or false. It is a question of what I want to appear on the paper. Therefor when a question is asked. I am not lying regardless of what I say, I am simply dictating to him what to put on the paper for me. Another tip I had read was to focus on a particular place on the wall in front of you and concentrate on it. I sat down and said I was ready. He then began by asking my name and what town we were in for a base reading. Next came the questions. Have you ever committed a serious crime that went undetected? A normal response to this question would be to begin to think back over one’s history and to question one’s self to make sure you weren’t missing anything. However, I stared at the wall and decided the answer to that question needed to be no, so I said no. The polygraph examination went on like this until the end. I can’t say I passed with flying colors however. Lieutenant Carter at the end looked at me and told me my lines were strange and did not indicate either deception or truthfulness but were what they would call inconclusive. Which is still passable for I passed my exam although I got a few odd looks from the lieutenant before I left. Not long after this I was being fitted for a jailer uniform and being distributed the equipment I would be using in my new role as Jail Deputy. I had a grand sense of embarking on a noble quest that would lead to untold adventures and a feeling of being a part of something much bigger than myself. Putting on the uniform for the first time went straight to my head as I could almost feel the new powers of authority emanating out from my being. The jail was connected to the main Sheriff's Office by a set of sturdy steel doors, which were operated remotely from a centralized command center. Once inside, there was no way out unless the command center authorized it. Although there were one or two physical keys, they were not kept on the premises and were reserved only for emergency situations where the controls at the command center were inaccessible. As I walked down the corridor towards the "Pod" where I was to begin my work, I couldn't help but notice the thick, grey concrete walls that lined the passageway. The Pod I would be working in for the first few months was known as D Pod. Essentially, a Pod was a hexagonal command center situated on a raised platform, encircled by remotely operated doors that led to various cell blocks. D-Pod comprised of 6 cell blocks and 2 recreational yards. When entering D-Pod, the two largest cell blocks, D-109 and D-130, were situated on the left-hand side. D-109 housed individuals jailed on misdemeanor charges, while D-130 was reserved for those facing felony charges who had not yet gone to trial. Essentially, it was the pre-trial felony block. On the right-hand side, there were four smaller blocks. One of these, D-150, hosted federal inmates who were predominantly Hispanic individuals with immigration-related holds. However, occasionally, unique inmates with charges related to federal crimes, such as crossing state borders to commit a crime, would also be held in D-150. The final two blocks were D-169 which hosted all inmates with sex related crimes and D-170 which held all inmates with Felony charges who had recently been convicted at trial but had not been sent to prison yet. Initially, my job at the jail was titled "Working D-Pod Direct," which involved spending time in the two largest cell blocks, D-109 and D-130, rather than simply standing in the command area of the Pod. As I began to acclimate myself to the environment and interact with the inmates, I noticed a variety of odors that were foreign to me. The persistent scent of sweat and human body odor was particularly revolting. I couldn't help but cringe at the thought of it. As I glanced around at the inmates, I couldn't help but feel a sense of disdain towards them. They had made choices that landed them in jail, and now they were paying the price. While I would be civil and courteous, I didn't feel as though I owed them anything. It was clear that breaking the rules on my watch was not an option. I quickly familiarized myself with the list of inmate infractions and their respective punishments. If an inmate broke certain rules, they could be subjected to lockdown. It became somewhat of a game to try and catch them in the act, and why not? They had committed a crime and their time in jail should not be pleasant or enjoyable. After all, what motivation would they have to not reoffend and come back? Thanks to constantly splitting wood, my arms had become rock-solid. In addition, I had been diligently honing my boxing skills and was eager for a potential altercation. The idea of an inmate attempting to intimidate me was thrilling, and I relished the possibility of a challenge. My father had earned a reputation as a formidable fighter, and now it was time for me to begin carving out my own legacy. As I searched through the bunks in D-109, my eyes caught sight of an inmate's thin, uncomfortable mat resting on top of his metal bunk. I couldn't help but wonder what could be hiding underneath it. My curiosity got the best of me, and I lifted the mat to find small, circular objects made of toothpaste. It was clear to me that the inmate had made these "mints" himself. I immediately located the inmate responsible and demanded an explanation for his actions. He fumbled through a feeble excuse, which did nothing to sway my judgement. As punishment, I stripped him of his privileges to have a mat and associate with other inmates. I then escorted him to E-Pod, on the opposite side of the jail, which served as the lockdown block. While I found the concept of lockdown amusing at the time, it was a truly awful experience for the inmates. They were stripped of all their belongings except for a Bible and confined to an empty cell for 23 hours a day, with only one hour of freedom to take a shower or read the newspaper in the main area of the cell block. I found myself getting a rush from catching inmates breaking the rules. It became a daily goal of mine to ensure that at least one person was placed in lockdown. At the time I thought that the rules were very simple for people who clearly cared little about society, simple dos and don’ts. There were big ones such as “Don’t assault any jail staff”, “No Fighting.”, “Attempts to escape.”, “No sexual activity.” Etc. Then there were the pettier issues, these were the ones I spent my time on. “Leaning on the wall.”, “Storing food after meals have been picked up.”, “Being unsanitary, failing to keep cell clean.”, “Possessing anything not authorized or issued directly to the inmate through jail staff.” The latter rule was very open to interpretation, and was used if inmates had extra of anything. Many an inmate met lockdown due to having an extra roll of toilet paper in those days. A typical portion of my day might go like this. I stride purposefully down the dimly-lit prison block, my boots echoing off the concrete walls. My chest swells with a sense of authority as I approach the inmate's cell. Without a word, I barge in, my hand firmly gripping my baton. "Face the wall!" I bark, my voice carrying the weight of my position. The inmate jumps, fear etched on his face as he turns to comply with my order. I begin to inspect his cell, my eyes scanning every inch for any signs of contraband. My nose wrinkles at the faint smell of sweat and mold, but I push on, determined to maintain control. And then, there it is. An extra roll of toilet paper, sitting innocuously on the shelf. I whirl around to face the inmate, my lip curling in disdain. "What is this?" I demand, my tone dripping with arrogance. The inmate stammers, fear and distress etched on his face. "I-I didn't know," he stutters. "I didn't know we couldn't have more than one roll." I snort in disbelief. "You expect me to believe that? You should have read the handbook more closely." I reach out and snatch the booklet from his hands, flipping through the pages with a sneer. "And here it is," I say triumphantly, jabbing my finger at the relevant section. "One roll per inmate. Did you even bother to read this?" I pull the inmate out of his cell, dragging him along behind me as I stride purposefully down the hallway. "Lockdown for five days," I snap, my tone leaving no room for argument. "Maybe you'll learn to follow the rules next time." I stride out of the prison gates, my uniform crisp and my badge shining in the sun. It's been a hard day, but I've managed to keep the inmates in line, as I always do. The weight of the day's events still heavy on my mind, I pull out a pack of Marlboro reds and light one up. The smoke fills my lungs and I let out a long exhale, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. Driving down the winding country roads, the sun beating down on my face, I can't help but feel a sense of peace. The green pastures and fields stretch out for miles on either side of the road, and I feel like I'm the only one in the world. When I finally get home, I grab a cold beer from the fridge and climb into the driver's seat of my truck. The sounds of the woods and insects fill the air as I crack open the can and start to read a book. The sun slowly begins to set, casting a warm orange glow over the trees. As the night deepens, I feel a restlessness stirring within me. I decide to take my truck out for a spin, driving through the small town I grew up in. The beer has been flowing freely for hours, but it doesn't even occur to me that I might be breaking the law. I revel in the feeling of being an adult, of having power and control over others. It doesn't matter that I've spent the day punishing inmates for petty offenses, because in this moment, I am invincible. The irony of my situation is lost on me, and I continue to drive around, the night stretching out before me like an open road. After I get home and as the night wears on, I continue to drink, the bottles piling up around me. The sounds of the woods outside provide a backdrop to my drunken stupor, and I stumble out into the darkness. The insects hum around me, and the night birds call out in the distance. I feel my stomach churning, and I lurch forward, retching onto the ground. The smell of beer and bile fills my nostrils, and I heave until there's nothing left. As I stumble into the woods, their darkness and isolation seem to envelop me completely. The only witnesses to my weakness are the insects and birds, their chirping and buzzing forming a constant, mocking chorus. No god, no divine presence to judge my actions or offer me solace. I know that I can’t linger here for long. I have to be at work again at 6 in the morning, ready to continue my reign of power.

2023.06.02 18:09 Logikana_ Best Binders Under $50?
I have 2 old GC2B binders that still work decently ok, but I have a really large chest that's very unproportional to my body, so it doesn't all fit within the binder especially when swimming.
I'm looking for recommendations on binders that fit very large chested people well, but aren't more than $50 including shipping. I see a lot of ads and posts recommending specific brands, but when I go to check how much they are, they are like $50-$100. I don't really care if it's "worth it" cause they are higher quality or last longer. I cant pay over $50 for a binder.
Im also not concerned with larger sizing options, I just need something that compresses enough while also having enough space for my chest. (I have a 28inch band size and then a 34inch bust and I barely weigh 115lbs)
I also live within the US, so anything shipping from overseas will probably cost too much.

2023.06.02 17:51 EeveeFlareon_6788 Just remembered my custom Pikmin types
| I just remembered the Custom Pikmin types I made a while back before the release trailer of Pikmin 4 (AKA When we got the Teaser showing the sleeping Bulborb) Here is the info I made of them with some extras I also made to go with it: New Ideas and Concepts For Pikmin 4: Existing Pikmin: Red Pikmin: Can Burn The Enemy Occasionally. Blue Pikmin: Can Slip Easily but also leaves a wet trail that can speed moving entities like Pikmin or Bulborbs. Yellow Pikmin: Can Zap The Enemy Occasionally while also sometimes making a small electrical field that can hit. Anything and Anyone. White Pikmin: When dead, leaves a splotch of poison to hit the enemy, but the splotch also hits The Pikmin and You. Also it Now has an Onion. Purple Pikmin: Weighs Down Enemies, Also Has an Onion Now but you need 10 pellets to use it. Pink Pikmin: A Bit Faster and does Less damage, Low health as well, and can also carry other Pikmin. Rock Pikmin: Now can latch on to Enemies, makes ground shake when they hit the ground, weighs down enemies slower than purple, can break certain materials, and can survive being eaten (Basically when your rock Pikmin Get Eaten, they will come back out at the end of the fight.) Bulbmin: Basically they're mobile Pikmin, when thrown, they'll bounce off, So they attack from the ground. New Pikmin: Green Pikmin: Can Stack on top of each other to form a line you can throw. Parasitic Pikmin: When eaten they poison the enemy, releases poison gas when killed as well. Can also clone itself from dead enemies that are small and if there is enough room. Goo Pikmin: When thrown on the enemy, they leach off of the enemy's health. Can also fit in small spaces and climb walls. Also with the ability to take only a little damage from hazards except for fire because it is weak to fire. Instantly dies in water aswell. Ant Pikmin: Can Climb on walls and when thrown on an Enemy it runs on the enemy biting it aswell making it hard to shake off. Ice Pikmin: Can Freeze water, immune to being frozen, freezes the enemy, fast Bois. Brown Pikmin: Great Builders, it can use it's hands to throw Pikmin, it can't latch onto enemies, so it attacks from the ground. It's the strongest mobile attacker, 2nd strongest Pikmin, because of it's strength it can carry 3 items on each of it's 2 hands. 2nd Bulkiest as well. Fuzzy/Black Pikmin: Rolls around picking up items with it's fuzz to make a big ball, including small Enemies, Lightest Pikmin, because it is light, it floats in water and just drifts, but still can't swim, when thrown the items it rolled up join it to make bigger damage, the items fall off when attacked. Seed Pikmin: Weakest, can't latch and can't attack from ground, when buried becomes a random type of Pikmin depending on how they react in the level (For Example: If it's been introduced to water enough, it'll learn to swim and become Blue Pikmin.) It shares First place with Fuzzy/Black Pikmin in lightest Pikmin, but Seed Pikmin can't float. Carapace Pikmin: Can only carry 10 items, but the items tends to fall, and the amount of items they carry can effect when they fall. They attack from the ground and Shields Pikmin with their mushroom cap. Orange Pikmin: These Pikmin are round and roll around . They Attack from the ground and can latch on. When killed they explode. Can get bigger with the more damage that has been taken. Spirit Pikmin: They Produce light for caves, and the more Enemies they've killed or the more Pikmin that died, they can duplicate into one hive mind, basically if an Enemy is killed, the Spirit Pikmin killed the enemy, they get a soul added to that Spirit Pikmin's hivemind, these die when the main one does and have lil dandelion like stems that don't grow, and they always follow they're leader. Basically They are like Pikmin for That Specific Pikmin, Spirit Pikmin and Souls can both fly and can't latch on, when killed, they just ascend, can carry 5 items, but increases for every 5 souls. Auburn Pikmin: These Pikmin heal your team, and yes, auburn is a color, it's hex code is #E87722 Ash Pikmin: These Pikmin have 2 stems. When thrown, they will attack the enemy then they will be coming back. Flax Pikmin: These Guys wave a wide leaf that is in the shape of a Uchiwa/Uchiha, They use their fans to blow gusts of wind. New Hazards: Poison Gas: Cloud of Poison Poison Puddle: Poison Puddle that Hurts and Poisons Pikmin Frost: Freezes Pikmin into blocks of ice, can carry or break, if carried, will be took back to the onion and absorbed removing 1 Pikmin from your team but putting 1 Pikmin in the Onion Heal Clouds: Clouds that Can heal you Gust of Wind: These Gust your Pikmin away, except for the 4 heaviest Pikmin, Seed Pikmin (Due to their Mechanic, Flax Pikmin, and Ice Pikmin New Mechanics: Pikmin Can take damage now, This is called Bulkiness. Each color of Pikmin has there own amount of health with Ant Pikmin being the Lowest (50 hit points) with Rock Pikmin being the Highest (200 Hit Points). Captains can Attack aswell. Pikmin will learn what to and what not to do. Basically when sent on a Mission, If it's the Type of Pikmin's first mission, they'll struggle like not knowing if they can swim and going in water, (For Blue Pikmin when they enter water for the first time they'll think they are drowning but then realize they can't), but the more missions they go on, the more that type of Pikmin will learn what to do and what not to do. You can name Pikmin. You can now choose when you can leave and You'll no longer have a time limit on a Day, and Nights are another place where frost can happen. Missions are basically your story mode, you'll get missions to go on in Pikmin 4 and they'll reveal the full story. Missions are reworked. You Start In Space to study more About PNF-404 so You don't crash, but while preparing, the crew hears this strange sound, looks outside, and see an unknown ship crashing into the planet, so your first mission is to investigate where you learn that it was a time capsule for aliens and it was knocked in with a history of PNF-404 where they learn it's True name, "Earth" and a capsule to recreate a human being, and they discover more and more about this planet's past. You'll get 2 Missions every mission complete. You Can Fight Bosses Anytime. You can Control Certain Groups. And That was my ideas and Concepts for Pikmin 4. This is now all Gone because Of The Release Trailer but I hope you like my old predictions :) submitted by EeveeFlareon_6788 to Pikmin [link] [comments] |
2023.06.02 17:48 pizzansteve We Are Humanity
This mini series of sort is inspired by a few sources, most notably the "Alien invasion" things made by a few Pivot Animators as well as Warhammer 40K in some way that will become apparent later.
Date: April 6, 2408 POV: Ambassador Ra-Kakon of the 6th Cigadreth Dynasty [Description of the Cigadreth: Reptilian, 3.11 ft tall average, 20~ kg average, bright yellow to dark red colored scales, 2 side facing eyes, bipedal with long tail for movement support and balance] Location: Andromeda Galaxy
10 years ago, we have started to recieve some weird transmissions and signals from the Western fringe of the galaxy. A Kolshif colony, which was the closest to the origin of the signals was ordered to keep listening to them and report on their findings. The signals was so garbled that it was almost as if it was written by a Cigadreth hatchling. [Description of the Kolshif: Insectoid, 4.10 ft average, 40~kg average, yellow to red head carapace, purple to velvet thorax and mid carapace, 4 eyes(2 side facing, 2 front facing), quadrupedal(4 legs and 4 arms)]
We brought this up with the Graddath Council, a galactic organization that consists of 20 space faring species, and after much deliberation and squabbling, we ordered the colony to keep on listening but it took us a few weeks to realize that, 'maybe a sub-par reciever of a colony world is not the best equipment to use in this endeavor.' and so we decided to start construction of a listening post. The station itself was not that big, only being about 100 x 200 x 100 meters big but it will do the job once it was finished which took about 3 years due to unexpected delays and random budget cuts by sector officials.
When the station was done and activated, the first signal we recieved shocked us.
"???: Andromeda Expeditionary Force, status update.
"AEF: Doing good Sol, colony reached 1 billion inhabitants a few weeks ago. Grandbattlefleet Acasta is detecting more signs of extraterrestrial life that isn't just plants, wildlife and flat-out hostile.
"Sol: Avoid initiating First Contact, let them come to us first. Last time we did that it plunged the Milky Way into war.
"AEF: We observed them making a listening post because of us flinging transmissions to God knows where. We'll report on any activity from these natives.
"Sol: Acknowledged. Make hell if they fire first. End conversation."
They knew! They knew all along! Its a good thing that the whole galaxy was listening in on the situation, its hard to cover up the sudden construction of a station near a colony world of 14 billion, let alone the random signals they were flinging into the void. Now we can't just stand there and do nothing.
An emergency meeting was called into session with all representatives of the council.
"Due to sudden events and findings from LP-4," High-Speaker Kohdrin of the Sal'reth Empire began "What is our course of action? Should we send them a greetings or should we leave them be?" [Description of the Sal'reth: Avian, 3.9 ft tall average, 30~ kg average, bright blue to dark green colored feathers(royal purple for nobles), 2 side facing eyes, long beak with colors ranging from charcoal black to metallic gold, bipedal]
There was a long silence with only a few murmurs between allies and the occasional exchange of looks between representatives. Even the Kolshif guards themselves look angsty by their nervous swaying and movements.
"What shall we do fellow representatives?" Kohdrin said suddenly, quickly stopping the murmuring in the chamber "Shall we send a signal of greetings?"
"I say we shall, High-Speaker." Ambassador Nihje of the Shai Republic "After all, they already know that we exist and it seems like they have been waiting for some time now." [Description of the Shai: Mammalian-Feline, 3.8 ft tall average, 50~ kg average, yellow to red orange short fur with with black or red rings, 2 front facing eyes, quadrupedal/bipedal, long tail for balance]
"Any objections?"
The chamber was silent.
"No words from the Fal'riths? Not looking for a squabble Suler?"
"I uh... N-no High-Speaker." Fal'rith Representative Suler replied "For all we know, the aliens are probably listening in on us right now. No need for a petty squabble that will lead to nowhere!" [Description of the Fal'rith: Aquatic based species, 6 tentacles, colors vary from family to family, though nobles are always a tint of yellow, 4 eyes(positioning doesnt matter because the author is one tired bastard)]
This kind of surprised me. You see, Suler was always that kind of petty bastard who likes himself a good screaming match. Almost everything brought up in the chamber is somehwat influenced by him. I leaned my head onto my right arm as I look at my pad to see if there were any updates to the station, but like the old days in school, the High-Speaker took notice like my history teacher.
"Anything you want to say Ra?"
"No Kohdrin, just seeing if there were any updates on LP-4."
Almost as if on cue, all of our pads lit up in unison. It was a message from LP-4.
"Khodrin, may I read it aloud?" asked Ambassador Kal'Re of the 2nd Rakatoth Republic. [Description of the Rakatoth: Rodent, 2.10 ft tall average, 60~ kg average, dark brown to orange fur, 2 front positioned eyes, short snout, quadrupedal]
"Go on," replied the High-Speaker "Read it louder for the others at the back."
"Very well," he replied. He stood up on his two hind legs and read the message for all of us to hear.
"Dear representatives of the council, we apologize for interrupting your meeting for there is some urgent news. The aliens have been detected slowly moving towards us, almost as if like they are getting ready to do a warp directly into the capitol system.
"We beg of you for the lords on high for speedy decision making in order to defuse the situation and seek for a more peacful route in this quagmire of a galaxy. Also its a contingent of 2 humongous ships and they look like they are itching to pull the trigger."
When the last word was said, Kal'Re was still standing to see the reactions of everyone present, there was a few seconds of silence as we are digesting the information fed to us.
The short few seconds felt like an eternity and once that was over, everyone in the chamber started talking erratically.
"What do they mean by 'humongous'?" Nihje said confused at the situation.
Normally, the High-Speaker would bang on the gavel for silence in the chamber, but the situation was so surreal that she watched in stunned silence seemingly forgetting her position in the council. After a while and the talking starting to get louder, Khodrin remembered where she was and squawked "Silence!"
"My fellow Ambassadors!" I spoke aloud, "Make your decision for this situation is starting to go sideways!"
"Ra is right!" said Ambassador Lilia of Curtel Prime from inside her shell, "Leaving them alone is soon going to be an impossibility because they are slowly moving towards us!" [Description of the Curtels: Mollusk, 1 ft tall average, 30~kg average, dark green to light yellow shell, 2 side facing "eyes" on a small "head" from within the shell)
"Its better now than later!" Nihje chimed in "Later is looking sketchy!"
"All in favor of sending a message of peace?" Suler said, surprisingly.
The whole room errupted in confirmation and with a few button presses from Khodrin the message was sent.
I hope it makes it to them before it they make it to us. I thought to myself, Hopefully we continue the 100 cycles of no needless bloodshed.
We recieved a message from the Cigadreth colony world Za-Kai 2 about how "2 oddly shaped large cargo haulers failed to respond to the hails". We recieved a follow up message that the 2 ships stopped beyond the orbit of the Gas Giant designated 'Ra-998b'. Scans to reveal more about the ships were unsuccessful due to some "weird electronic interferences".
Everyone let out one shaky sigh of relief, though the ships stopped, they were still in council territory. We recieved another message from the colony stating:
"Forwarded from one SVS-Living Litany:
"Dear representatives of the Graddath Council, we are humanity. This is Rear-Admiral Johnathan Beckett. We would formally like to invite all of you aboard the SVS-Sol's Might for a diplomatic meeting and proper introduction of all the species in your care.
"Terra Lives On."
The High-Speaker opened her beak once more to speak but before anything came out a violent shaking rocked the station. This kind of shake was no meteor strike or some ambassador's transport bumping into the station, this was like-
"A SHIP HAS WARPED IN CLOSE PROXIMITY WITH THE STATION!" Shouted a Kolshif guard on the PA system.
Rude.
I helped Nihje get up on her feet and as I was dusting her off, a few of the council started murmuring profanities at the event that happened. We heard a scream from a Rakatoth staff member down the hall, we saw her running by the doorway and before a brave Kolshif can investigate, 5 aliens came into view.
They looked like they were bipeds, clad in grey armor with grey helmets and blue visors as well as pouldrons varying from white with blue trim to purple with blue trim. Their chest piece displays a blue and green marble(which I assume is their cradle world) surrounded by a blue ring and a golden laurel. Each step they take into the council chamber is taken with pride and confidence.
One of them stands out from the others. It has a purple pouldron and its main armor is like that of the ontourage but it wears a sache colored with blue, red and white with a roundel leading to the shoulder. It does not carry any visible weapon. The ontourage carry weapons of unknown class.
The Kolshifs were aiming their weapons at them yet the aliens look like they don't care at all. The High-Speaker ordered them to stand down but they never took their hands off their pulse rifles.
The aliens stood in front of doorway. The one with the sache turned its head slowly from one end of the chamber to the other, and once it was done it spoke. We heard its real voice, loud, almost like a roar though muffled by its helmet. Then the translator cracked to life.
"My name is Ambassador Wilhelm of the Terran United Federation. 11 years ago, we sent a colony fleet to this galaxy for better pastures for our own galaxy is growing smaller for our explorers and more hostile to its inhabitants. We only ever encountered another extraterrestrial race though when we approached them first, it sent our galaxy spiraling into a hundred year long war that saw said race be wiped from the universe." It spoke in Graddath Standard.
Right, don't tick them off. I thought to myself.
"They used to call themselves Ostrens, and when we first saw them we were happy and relieved to know that we were not alone in this universe. That joy and excitement was quickly snuffed out when they attacked one of our colonies. We are once again happy to know that there are more intelligent life in the nearest galaxy over, but due to lingering xenophobia, we never made the first move until one Rear-Admiral Beckett decided to push his luck by moving both of his large ships closer."
Ah, that's nice. Big boys with big toys. Better make sure this Beckett doesnt touch our things.
"We would like to apologize for the inconvenience that those ships may impose on that colony, but we would also like to know if all of you would join us aboard the TIES-Endurance."
We all looked at each other to see who would make the first move. It was then I felt the Kolshif Ambassador, Indrex, slowly push me towards the aliens. I cursed under my breath and as I slowly walked towards them, it felt like it was warmer. When I closed the gap, Ambassador Wilhelm suddenly extended his hand towards me, realizing what he did, he quickly put it back to his side.
"Sorry," he spoke softly, almost like a whisper "force of habit, never met another culture that didn't take the gesture as a sign of peace and greeting."
Damn, I should've took his hand, now I kind of feel bad.
One by one the other ambassadors took up the invitation, a Rakatoth had to carry Lilia because of the fact she had no limbs for movement. Wilhelm almost seemed happy and relieved when the last of us finally joined in.
"Very well then," Wilhelm said startling a few of us "follow Sargeant Macaraig over there. Macaraig, show us the way."
Macaraig nodded and lead the way, the station guards were trying to stop them but seeing as we were willingly following them they decided to stay. We all shared nervous glances with one another, its not everyday we get to encounter intelligent life, let alone an advanced one at that. The silence in the hall where we walked was almost deafening, only broken by the clanking of the alien soldiers' armor and sabatons.
It was then we saw their ship on the window. It was huge, probabaly bigger than the station itself. Its guns were bristling with energy and they made no attempt to hide the cannons. A wierd bulb was mounted at its bottom, it didnt look like it served a purpose. An alien saw my confusion and shook its head.
What? Why? It doesnt look like a weapon. I thought to myself, Better ask questions later.
We arrived to a docking airlock which was seemingly blasted open. Wilhelm saw what we were looking at and assured us that "some idiot got lazy and used an explosive instead of opening it manually." I gulped nervously, Nihje was suspicious at their intentions judging by her nervous tail swaying, Khodrin was a little worried with a few of the feathers on her back seemingly ruffled, and Suler was growing anxious.
When we took a look inside the airlock, we saw an alien with a black mask next to a weird trapezoid shaped object with a blue light flickering on top of it. The alien seemed to be doing something judging by the fact that both its hands are sticking into an opening. This alien was not wearing any armor and instead some thick, heavy fabric covered in oils of some sort. Wilhelm coughed which made the oily alien flinch.
"Is it done lieutenant?" Wilhelm said calmly.
"Just a few more minutes," the alien replied "some bits of shrapnel are jammed in the inner workings. Nanites are helping me so it should work as it is intended to."
Nanites? How advanced is this race we are facing?
The lieutenant closed the opening on the trapezoid object. He took a look at all of us. I'll admit, it was a little uncomfortable. He then took a look at the object and let out a groan. He kicked said object and the light on it turned green.
Almost in an instant, I saw the alien guards dissappear with a green flash, and then Wilhelm, then us. I was the last to go but before then I tried to run, with my instincts taking over.
I felt myself slamming on a cold metal floor.

2023.06.02 17:31 throwaway_fun_acc123 Turf cutting on private bogs
The sanctimonious bs on this sub surrounding turf recently is beyond belief. As someone who was born and raised in Dublin but have been living rural for a few years, I think ye all need to check yourselves.
Vast majority of turf/peat that used to be cut and burned in Ireland was brought to the cities etc for heat, in later years it was used to generate electricity. This a vastly different from what's going on these days. Most bord na mona large scale bogs have shut down and the lands allocated for rewetting. This caused massive unemployment in the areas over the years and you can still the effects on rural Ireland today.
Many of us who use turf as our primary heat source don't really have any other option. My home built in 60's, uses a solid fuel stove and back boiler to heat my rads. I get about €400 worth of turf, legally through traditional means and that does me for the winter. Even to get the equivalent in well seasoned, ''eco friendly'', timber would cost a lot more.
My current other options are to get an oil burner, that means I'm using imported oil, that costs about €800 a tank that MIGHT last me half a winter. Or I could retro fit my house, with solar and air to water heat, however I don't have €20,000 laying around and no grants don't come close to covering that cost.
The smaller private bogs have banks which are scraped out and layed on the ground. They are then usually hand stacked to dry and then drawn to local homes for storage for winter. For most of the year the environment on these private bogs is undisturbed. Most of the bog owners close to me have stopped spraying the ground with weedkiller before laying the rows out. Many who have stopped cutting have let their plots go wild to encourage wildlife in the area.
To see people on here and other places getting up their own holes telling others off about burning turf is annoying as fuck. Same cunts probably heating their homes off Russian gas, driving an electric car that some poor kid died extracting the cobalt for the battery and taking 2 or 3 foreign holidays a year because their lives are so miserable. Such ''eco friendly'' people wouldn't know biodiversity if it bit them on the arse
So yeah let him without sin cast the first stone and try to see things for others perspective.
Cheers

2023.06.02 17:10 r3dsca Obscure subreddit posting - The Branding Issue of Democrats from the 90s to Now
This was posted in the
AngryObservation subreddit (that I stumbled on two seconds ago)
Essay posted by
u/dcmetro7 https://www.reddit.com/usedcmetro7/ Democrats have a branding problem : AngryObservation (reddit.com) Democrats have a branding problem
😴 Long Observation 😴 I was inspired by
u/Randomuser1520 's post about the Democratic Party's seemingly weak bench of future potential presidential nominees.
A lot of the problems trace back to 2016, but I'd argue the Democrats' branding woes go back even further. Think all the way back to the last time the Democrats had a consistently strong electoral record as a party -- the 90s, where the only truly bad year for Ds was 1994. Bill Clinton had successfully rebranded the party under the 'Third Way' label that Dems at any level could embrace and benefit from, and he had a clear successor in Al Gore. But Gore loses narrowly in 2000, and the problems for the Dems' brand begin.
'Yes We Can'
After 9/11, the electorate supports Bush and they support war. Dems' brand takes a hit and they lose the 2002 midterms. In 2004, John Kerry is successfully painted as an out-of-touch Ivy League liberal, disengaged from 'real America.' Dems lose and their brand suffers further.
But by the end of Bush's term, most Americans are disillusioned with Dubyaism. They wanted change, and one man promises to lead them to it with posters that proclaim 'HOPE' and cries of 'Yes We Can,' heralding in a new age of politics. Barack Obama and the Democrats are swept into a trifecta in Washington.
And we certainly got a new age of politics. When Obama was inaugurated, pundits speculated about the 'emerging Democratic majority', and how the GOP may literally go extinct in ten years. By the end of Obama's second term, those same pundits are surveying the absolutely decimated state of the Democratic party at all levels of power. Dems had lost the Senate, the House, most governorships, and most state legislatures. Control of the state legislatures makes the GOP's hold on the House even stronger. Control of the Senate effectively leads to control of the Supreme Court.
While Obama certainly can't be blamed for everything the GOP threw at him, I feel like it's safe to say
his rebranding of the Democratic party failed in the long run. The 'Party of Hope' was sunk into the quagmire of a slow economic recovery, some of the most cynical politicking ever, and some of the most dysfunctional White House-Congress relationships in the history of the country. Obama's signature healthcare legislation would languish in the 30s approval-wise until after he left office. By 2015, no one was talking about the Democrats as the Party of Hope anymore. Even the guy who designed the original 'Hope' poster said he was frustrated by the lack of progress under the Obama admin. I'd argue that the Republicans were responsible for the clear majority of this dysfunction, but if their goal was to muddy the waters between the parties, they succeeded. And with the Tea Party, they were better at rebranding themselves even when they were in the opposition.
And none of this was helped by the face that Obama seemed extremely reluctant, even uninterested, in stepping into the role of party leader. Congressional Democrats were frustrated at the way he kept his distance from them, making it hard to solidify the policy goals they'd implemented in his first term. This article (
https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/us/aloof-obama-is-frustrating-his-own-party.html) sums it up well, with this prescient quote sticking out:
In interviews, nearly two dozen Democratic lawmakers and senior congressional aides suggested that Mr. Obama’s approach has left him with few loyalists to effectively manage the issues erupting abroad and at home and could imperil his efforts to leave a legacy in his final stretch in office.
And sure enough, Obama's legacy was in peril before he even left office.
'Stronger Together'
In 2016, Democrats didn't plan for a primary, they planned for a coronation. Hillary Clinton had been locking up all the support she could get from the Democratic establishment while Obama was serving his second term. Biden would seem like the clear establishment successor, but by the time he was able to turn his attention from VP duties to the primary he realized Hillary had completely boxed him out. She had already corralled all the big donors, operatives, and endorsements into her corner, and Joe was checkmated before he even sat down to the board. Thus, he turned down the opportunity, likely burying his long-nurtured presidential ambitions.
But then the coronation gets bumpy. Sanders challenges her from the outside, and immediately begins putting her on the spot as to why she's running. In other words, what does she envision for the Democratic brand? Hillary herself doesn't know. Is it a third term of Bill (whose star was starting to fade among everyone whose name doesn't rhyme with Shames Scarville), a third term of Obama (whose Hope posters have since become landfill), or an all-new thing?
To Hillary's credit, she couldn't portray herself as a total break from the past, both because she had been was strongly anchored to the national political landscape for the last thirty years, and because she could hardly attack Obama's record too harshly. In the end, she also struggled to brand both herself and the party. Consider the slogans most associated with her campaign; 'Forward Together' and 'Stronger Together' sound like the slogans of a centrist third party with no concrete policy ideas. They just attempted to project a feeling of unity onto a people who were united only, if the candidacies of Sanders and Trump meant anything, in the feeling that 'establishment' politicians like HRC had failed. And, of course, 'I'm with Her' was barely a rebrand at all, simply associating the party with its uncharismatic yet seemingly unstoppable frontrunner.
In the meantime, Trump had done the opposite, rebranding himself and the GOP as the party of 'America First populism.' What that meant exactly in terms of policy seemed to change from day to day But as a brand, as a forceful statement of intent, it worked, especially when contrasted with a seemingly rudderless HRC campaign that failed to answer the age-old question: 'Why are you running for president?'
'For the People'
After the 2016 fiasco, the Democrats were decimated and leaderless. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had passed his leadership position to Chuck Schumer and passed on soon after Trump took office. Tim Ryan led a mutiny against Nancy Pelosi, blaming her in part for the party's plunge from ascendance to irrelevance in the House. Hillary Clinton disappeared into the woods of Chappaqua. Obama started making a docu-series for Netflix. Joe Biden entered semi-retirement and wrote a book.
But in all of this, they found something they had been lacking. A brand.
Not the one they would have preferred, but one that would work nonetheless for winning elections. House Dems would embrace the (once-again) vague slogan of 'For the People' ahead of the 2018 midterms, but the aim was clear. The Democrats were now the Opposition; the Anti-Trump party.
Trump's approval rating was not just low, but incredibly sticky. People tended to have very firm opinions on him, and so his approval rating barely escaped the 35-45% range, with him almost hitting 50% before the pandemic hit. Thus, running on opposition to Trump would be fine electorally. In 2018, the Democrats had a blue wave year based mostly on opposition to Trump, retaking the house. Ironically, a big policy motivator for voters was backlash against the GOP's effort to repeal and replace Obamacare -- a promise that had driven Republican electoral gains since the bill was passed into law. Republican branding and messaging had been so successful that, for the better part of the decade, people trusted them to 'fix' the ACA until the very last minute before the replacement was signed.
'Battle for the Soul of the Nation'
But the problem remained for 2020 -- who would lead them? This was a difficult decision even before the pandemic. And Democratic primary voters were treated to a veritable buffet on angles on how to rebrand the party to beat Trump.
Should the party embrace democratic socialism under Sanders, or heavy consumer advocacy under Warren? Should it embrace a young, charismatic up-and-comer like Harris, Buttigieg, or O'Rourke or someone just as 'establishment' as Hillary, like Michael Bloomberg? Old-school liberalism with the Klob? Whatever Andrew Yang was doing?
But as the polls drew near, the Democrats seemed to conclude that beating Trump was simply more important than charting a new course for the party. If they could get elected or rebrand, they'd choose the former. And so all the other more moderate candidates dropped out to consolidate the vote around Biden, as the safe, expected pick who could stay the course. Biden and his surrogates began adopting the slogan 'Battle for the Soul of the Nation,' an epic and apocalyptic phrase that is still fundamentally reactive in tone, implying that the biggest motivator to vote for Democrats that fall was not to pass any specific agenda, but to put a stop to the GOP's plans.
Biden wouldn't
govern in this way, but he would campaign this way -- as the normal, capable candidate who could lead the country's post-covid recovery in opposition to Trump's perceived incompetence. Biden won, but Democrats didn't get nearly the boost they wanted from covid, and House candidates underperformed Biden nationally, leading to a surprising loss of seats in the House. And after the effort to throw out the election failed, Trump left office with severely damaged standing with independents. The anti-Trump brand had delivered Dems a trifecta; now it was time to use it; hopefully to establish a new brand for a new decade.
'Building Back Better'
Upon taking office, Biden and the Dems lay out their agenda; the 'Build Back Better' plan, which centers on a three-pronged approach; a pandemic relief bill, an infrastructure bill, and a social policy bill. Passing such plans will involve all 50 Senate D's on board in some cases, and a bipartisan filibuster-proof majority of 60 senators in other cases.
People laugh, think back to 2010, and begin arguing whether a prediction that the GOP will control 55 Senate seats by 2023 is too conservative. Nancy Pelosi is trying to manage a mere five-seat majority in the house. Mitch McConnell, who once feasted on the Democrats' lost hopes the way a hungry turtle devours a plate of juicy strawberries, still held enough sway in the Senate to hold up any significant policy not related to budget reconciliation. Even then, Schumer must wrangle mavericks like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. Dramatic divisions still rip across the fabric of American society. But then, something truly strange happens.
The 117th Congress ends up being one of the most productive sessions ever.
Whether or not you think any or all of the 117th's acts were good policy, it's undeniable that this was an unusually politically efficient session, especially considering the last decade of hardball politics. Bipartisan majorities drive the infrastructure act, a gun control act, a tech-manufacturing promotion act, and even a somewhat-legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide. Plus, Schumer and Pelosi navigate their tiny majorities toward passing partisan priorities, like the pandemic relief act and the scaled-down Build Back Better social policy bill, rebranded as the Inflation Reduction Act or IRA. McConnell drops his trademark stonewalling and collaborates with Biden on the bipartisan bills, and 'Yea' votes roll in even from deep red states -- Republican senators from Mississippi, West Virginia, and North Dakota get these bills over the line. Bipartisanship returns to Congress in fleeting glances -- something that I feel confident in arguing
absolutely no one expected Biden or the Dem leaders to be able to do.
Of course, no one has forgotten 2010, and 2022 looks to be another rough year. Inflation soars, and Biden's approval rating drops. Dems brace for impact. The Dobbs ruling happens, but polls repeatedly suggest that the economy is the top issue on voters' minds, and they don't like Biden's handling of it.
But while these things are true, they ignore a crucial factor -- the GOP is embroiled in an identity crisis of its own. The leader of the party is claiming to be the legitimate president of the United States, which is a bit of a hard issue to ignore. Trump loyalists beat out 'establishment' Republicans in the primaries, and bring their hard promotion of the MAGA brand to the general elections. And they lose.
I think it's fair to say that the GOP lost most of the key races of the 2022 midterms, rather than Democrats winning them. Swing state Republican parties chose candidates who adhered so closely to a brand so toxic that independents still chose the Democrats, even in some cases where they were dissatisfied with the party. Republicans who have managed to establish a brand for themselves -- DeSantis, Kemp, and DeWine among them -- soar, while the Trumpiest candidates fall flat. McConnell remains in the minority, and McCarthy becomes the head of a very, very dysfunctional family.
Will Brandon's Rebrand Stand?
So, coming off an unusually strong midterm, where does the party go in 2024? Probably, as
u/Randomuser1520 said, back to Biden. When your party wins one of the most fiercely contested elections in American history, has a productive legislative session, and then massively overperforms in the midterm, you don't usually change horses regardless of what approval polling says. If Biden were just 10 years younger and the health concerns were off the table, there would be no question in anyone's mind who to nominate.
The establishment and progressive wings of the party seem to be behind him if he runs, meaning challenges will only come from real outsiders like Marianne Williamson and Robert Kennedy Jr. The DNC will probably work to make those challenges as unviable as possible.
2024 is tricky to predict. Trump is favored on the Republican side, and as said before, his brand is so toxic that Biden can probably glide to reelection barring any massive economic downturns or serious health problems. I won't get too much into 2024, because it seems pretty clearly on the path to becoming another referendum on the GOP's brand, not the Democrats'. Biden's second term (and the rest of his first term) may be defined as much by implementation of the legislation they passed during the 117th as much as by new legislation, if not more.
So the question becomes this -- where does the party go in 2028? Or, in other words, what will Democrats take away from the Biden presidency, and how will Biden shape the party's brand going forward? Who they choose to lead the party next will tell, and Biden's presidency may already be laying out a blueprint.
In his 1996 State of the Union address, Bill Clinton declared 'the era of big government is over,' essentially conceding that Reagan and his vision of a small role for the federal government in domestic affairs had won out for the time, and that Democrats would need to work within that political reality in order to win elections. Obama's efforts to change that status quo resulted in an avalanche of backlash from Tea Partiers, self-proclaimed champions of fiscal conservatism. Hillary Clinton's failed campaign strategy arguably rested more on that understanding of the political climate than anything else, causing her to miss a series of growing frustrations with Reaganism at times channelled by Sanders and, at times, Trump -- at decimation of the manufacturing sector, at the growing gap between rich and poor, at China's seemingly unstoppable three-decade rise at the expense of the U.S.
Biden's approach to American industry and government is a strong repudiation of Reaganism, based around the idea that it is the government's job to fortify and guide the economy in ways that are necessary where the free market has little incentive to. It argues that the issues of infrastructural decay, manufacturing decline, and the growing need for green energy in the face of climate change will only be solved if the government directs the power of the private sector towards those goals at great upfront cost. And free trade, long held as the unassailable source of America's prosperity, must now only be employed in moderation -- if the U.S. has to arguably break international law to lure foreign investment into the U.S. through generous subsidies, it will be worth it, even if it earns the fury of our economic partners. This may be the groundwork of Bidenism.
These plans may fail. The money may be wasted by incompetent or corrupt administrators and the American people may become even more jaded at the thought of big government. But movement within the GOP may suggest a broader shift in the American mind towards this kind of economic interventionism is already in progress. Promising to reverse the decline of manufacturing through tariffs and other measures would have been political anathema twenty years ago, but it has become a core Republican plank. Florida Republicans' punitive measures towards Disney and the GOP's growing support for government action against Big Tech companies suggests openness towards not just using state power to guide the economy, but also to reshape the social landscape by manipulating the private sector. It may well be that the era of small government is over.
I've sorted some potential 'brands' and some of the people who might be nominated in 2028 / become party standard-bearers should the Democrats go in that direction. These lists aren't exhaustive; I'm just trying to establish a general vibe.
The 'Biden Blueprint': Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Gina Raimondo
These are members of the Biden admin who have been given great power (and great piles of money) to enact the legislation of the 117th. If American sentiment towards big government changes as quickly as I think it could, a Cabinet secretary could have a decent shot in 2028. Harris would be the natural successor as the VP, but Transportation Sec Buttigieg and Commerce Sec Raimondo, who were empowered to implement much of the Infrastructure Act and the CHIPS Act respectively, could become standard-bearers for this new vision of technocratic governance if they administer these programs well (and in a way that makes headlines). If Energy Sec Granholm were a natural-born citizen, she would definitely fit here as well, considering how much power the IRA gave her department.
The 'New New Deal': Amy Klobuchar, Catherine Cortez Masto, Mark Kelly, Tammy Duckworth, Raphael Warnock
Liberal senators who are capable of working across the aisle to achieve compromise could be a strong bet if Democrats want to recreate the success of the 117th Congress in the future. There's always an argument that effective legislators won't necessarily make for effective executives, but these choices would help with Democrats' goal of rebranding the Democratic party as the party you vote for if you want Washington to function properly and anticipate constituents' needs. Such a ticket could brand itself as the path to bipartisan yet assertive solutions on familiar and emerging issues like immigration reform, federal protection for abortion, the housing shortage, and the drug crisis.
The 'Bulwark': Roy Cooper, Laura Kelly, Andy Beshear
I'll admit that when I began writing this post, I had a more favorable opinion of the above three governors and politicians like them as presidential nominees and the potential 'future of the party.' I no longer feel as strongly about them, however, because I don't believe they do enough to change the brand of the Democrats and the political environment as a whole. These governors are best known for winning races in red states; for holding the line against the most conservative policies while finding areas of compromise, especially on kitchen-table issues.
But this brand of Democrat is fundamentally reactive, even defensive -- it assumes that most of the job will be obstructing right-wing legislation from a red legislature. In other words, it is a kind of strategy you use when you're trying to hold ground, not gain it. It works well when your
opponent's brand is toxic (as the GOP's has been since 2016), but this I suspect this brand of 'competent normality' will struggle if the opposition ceases to actively repel voters. If Trump and his acolytes continue to hold a strong grip on the party through 2024 and beyond, this brand may not be a bad bet short-term, but long-term Democrats want to be the ones
establishing the rules of the game, not just beating your opponent at theirs. That's what a successful political brand does. While Dems in similar situation should definitely look to these governors for guidance in running their campaigns (and hopefully, their administrations), I would caution at this point against basing the national party's brand on their model.
I think somewhere between these three groups lies a successful path forward for the Democrats that towards becoming the dominant party in U.S. politics at the federal level. There are some other interesting currents in the party; like how Democratic governors like Whitmer, Evers, and Walz have rebuilt D strength the Midwest after a rough 2010s, and how Western Dems like Jared Polis, Mary Peltola, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez have found unexpected electoral stength by embracing a form of libertarianism. However, these currents may be regional, and Democrats shouldn't necessarily try to nationalize every idea that works in one part of the country. Creating different regional 'flavors' of Democrat would be necessary to keep the party relevant in all parts of the country.
Regarding the 2020 primary runners-up, I don't think most of the visions laid out then work post-2024, and for this reason I tend not to give too much weight to current Democratic primary polling, because it assumes these same people would be running again.
Assuming Biden ends his term without catastrophe, I don't think the party needs to place all their faith in a young, charismatic Obama wannabe like O'Rourke or Swalwell, nor does it need to drastically pivot to the center, nor does it need to proclaim itself the party of 'outsiders,' nor does it need to give the reins to the progressive wing. If everything goes right, they can remain ideologically where they are now (roughly) and establish a solid brand for the first time in a generation.
The Democrats been losing the branding war since the days of Nixon. They may currently have all the tools they need right now to change that, and set the expectations for the next fifty years of politics. Let's see how they do.
This is my first big write-up, so I almost certainly missed some stuff and made some assumptions. Let me know what you think.

2023.06.02 17:03 linefena Help me choose a small black bag. Which should I get? Loewe Hammock Hobo, YSL Lou, Celine belt bag, Chloé Marcie?
| I need help choosing a bag: I’m missing a small black bag in my collection. I currently own a small Puzzle in sand and a LV small sac noe. Therefore I’m looking for a black bag that can go from day to night easily and is appropriate for special occasions (cocktail or black tie attire). However these occasions happen only a few times a year which is why it should fit for everyday use. I tend to carry only my essentials (cardholder, phone, lipstick, keys, sometimes sunglasses). For reference I am 5’7 (1.71m) and have an athletic/average built frame. I tend to wear (business) casual clothing except for mentioned special occasions. I prefer crossbody bags and like having my hands free. I baby my bags when wearing them but like to get the most out of them to justify the price by aiming to achieve a low cost per wear which is why I want to be able to wear it everyday as well. Regarding the hardware of these bags: I like silver and gold Hardware equally. Here are my thoughts on each bag: Loewe Hammock mini Hobo: love that it can be worn three different ways (crossbody, shoulder, clutch style when folded) and comes with two straps. As it’s a new release I don’t know how it will wear long term as I’m afraid it might crease if folded often. Love the slightly slouchy look it has and the low key logo. YSL Lou: I love the shape of a camera bag and the tassel. What I’m not sure of is the logo tarnishing long term? Also not sure if I’m a fan of the prominent logo although YSL is one of the few brand where I like the logo itself. Chloe Marcie: is the lowest price and below 1k. I live the shape of the bag but I’m not sure if it might be too casual for evening wear? Celine nano belt bag: I’ve been looking at this bag for a long time but I’m not sure if it fits my collection as I tend to favor bags that are not too structured. However the bag is just stunning. Is the leather very stiff and is it hard to get in and out of it? Which bag would you choose? What is your experience on wear and tear on these bags? What do they fit? submitted by linefena to handbags [link] [comments] |
2023.06.02 17:01 Efficient_Young_9032 What are the pros and cons of using a divorce lawyer?
What are the pros and cons of using a divorce lawyer? 📷
Tim Cella used to work at several law firms
As with everything in life, there are pros and cons and whether you actually need a divorce
lawyer will totally depend on your circumstances. If you and your spouse are amicable and not fighting and acrimony is non-existent, then you might not need a lawyer at all. If on the other hand, one or both spouses are fighting… well, then, you might need one no matter what. Here are some pros and cons:
PROS - Legal Knowledge and Expertise: A divorce lawyer has extensive knowledge and expertise in family law and divorce proceedings. They can provide you with legal guidance on important issues related to divorce such as child custody, alimony, property division, and more.
- Objective advice: During the stressful and emotional process of divorce, it is easy to make decisions that are not in your best interest. A divorce lawyer can provide objective advice, helping you to make sound decisions based on your unique situation.
- Avoiding Mistakes: Divorce proceedings can be complex, and there are various legal requirements that must be met. Without a divorce lawyer, you may miss important deadlines, overlook necessary paperwork or make costly mistakes. Hiring a divorce lawyer can help you avoid these mistakes.
- Litigation Experience: If you need to go to court during your divorce proceedings, a divorce lawyer will be able to represent you and navigate the legal system. They have experience in litigation and understand the nuances of court proceedings.
- Negotiation Skills: A divorce lawyer can negotiate on your behalf in order to obtain the best possible outcome for you. They know how to communicate effectively with the other party's lawyers and can work towards a resolution that meets your needs.
- Reduced Stress: Going through a divorce can be an incredibly stressful experience. By hiring a divorce lawyer, you can alleviate some of that stress by letting them handle the legal aspects of the process.
- Protecting Your Rights: The truth is - you don’t know what you don’t know - and if you don’t know for example that you can get half of your spouse’s retirement account and you don’t ask for it - you won’t get it. A divorce lawyer can ensure that your rights are protected throughout the divorce proceedings. They can represent you in court and fight for a fair settlement.
- Help With Paperwork: There is a lot of paperwork involved in a divorce, and it can be overwhelming to try and keep track of it all. A divorce lawyer can help you complete and file all necessary paperwork correctly and efficiently. I’ve heard horror stories from court clerks about how they “dislike” people doing their own legal work and how they have to reject pleadings done wrong.
CONS - Cost: One of the most significant cons of hiring a divorce lawyer is the cost. Lawyers can be expensive, and the cost of legal fees for a divorce can quickly add up. This can be a disadvantage if you are on a tight budget. In fact, some lawyers will make things more expensive than they need to be (see #7 below).
- Lack of Control: When you hire a divorce lawyer, you are effectively placing your case in their hands. This means that you may not have as much control over the outcome of your case as you would like.
- Lengthy Process: Divorce proceedings can be lengthy, especially when lawyers are involved. Hiring a lawyer may extend the process, which can be frustrating if you want to move on with your life.
- Emotional Distance: While a divorce lawyer can provide objective advice, they may not be able to offer the emotional support that you need during this difficult time.
- Adversarial Nature: Divorce proceedings can be adversarial, with each party fighting for their own interests. This can create a contentious atmosphere that may not be conducive to resolving disputes amicably.
- Limited Availability: Depending on the lawyer's workload and schedule, they may not always be available to answer your questions or discuss your case with you.
- Overly Aggressive Representation: Some divorce lawyers may take an overly aggressive approach, which can exacerbate tensions between parties and make it more difficult to reach a resolution. Some lawyers just want to fight. You don’t want someone to make your situation worse than it already is.
- Unpredictable Outcomes: Ultimately, the outcome of your divorce case will be determined by a judge, who may not rule in your favor despite your lawyer's best efforts. This can be frustrating and disappointing.
Overall it’s 100% completely up to you whether you get a divorce lawyer or not. I’ve found having a great lawyer on your side can be beneficial because, as I said before - you don’t know what you don’t know. Having someone who’s been through law school, passed the bar, and done hundreds of your type of case can really help. So make sure you get someone who is a right fit for you - if you’re going down that road.
I hope this has been helpful. Good luck.

I had a feeling I knew what was being asked of Fauve. A young media expert with smarts, ambition, ability, and whose work was slowly creeping outward into my counterparts among the other species…and who had already developed a rapport with dangerous ones to the point where she had no fear of them?
And one more thing.
She’s terribly cute.
This is hard to explain to some species, but the simple fact of the matter is that as an unmodified human with no meaningful combat training and only a reasonable level of fitness associated with a normal level of activity… Fauve appeared to be distinctly nonthreatening. She did not tower over ‘most’, the maxiki notwithstanding. She did not have any evident savage appendages or claws, and even her canines were underdeveloped even relative to my own.
Simply put… she did not look like an apex predator whose species was like a coiled spring ready for the pressure holding it down to release and spring it to undreamt of heights.
With a slender frame and wide, intent eyes, you had to be familiar with the common divergences of predator and prey to recognize that she was from a predator species at all. For example the front seated eyes for depth perception as opposed to the side facing eyes to search for predators. The slight canines for the tearing of meat after a creature is defleshed. The upright body that let them see farther.
She wasn’t even particularly fast, so you’d have to know enough about human anatomy to know that a tribe of her kind could walk almost anything to death.
So, Fauve looked harmless. It didn’t hurt that any attempt at delving into her identity would reveal that it was being in danger that ultimately led to her coming into her current state.
Of course, I knew the truth. In a strange sort of way, if Bonny Red was right, and I was more dangerous than she, then Fauve was at least as dangerous as me, you see. I wanted to change one Empire, one people. All else was an afterthought that I saw as a possibility but could be developed later.
Fauve had her eyes set on the whole galaxy, and my work was one of the weapons in her arsenal.
Do you see why I adore humans so? They are beautiful, dangerous, charming, kind, and relentless all at once, when something tickles their ambitions.
I will not trouble you with the drab details of my backchannel work, it is as it seems. I relayed a request to the league fighters. The fighters reached out to their embassy on Earth. The embassy received my message, a time was ‘suggested’ and I relayed that and then they would handle the rest themselves.
It was done in the time it took to finish lunch and write about it here, which was to say, about an hour.
To pass the time, I chose to amuse myself in the fruits of one of Fauve’s projects. I had a headset to engage in the game world that Fauve made, and followed the story she laid out. My character began as a family man, a wife, hair like ink, and the slight almond shape to her eyes that marked her heritage as coming from the far east.
In the game I played, she held a child who was a mix of both of us, and my role was that of a scientist… for three ‘days’ I tended ordinary tasks and played through the preprogrammed warmth of their household. Then I got to see the world erupt in flames outside of our window.
From there, safety. Cold storage… and my wife and child were stolen, from within the glass, I heard the ones taking them say, “They agreed to this…”
The scene faded out… and when I was ‘awake’ I was not alone, or the same. For one, I now had animalistic features, as did they… and yes, my ‘family’ was there. And I played for sixty in-game days until I died… only to take over and play as my wife, then when she died… I took over playing as my daughter. The game carried me through generations, parent to child, until I found myself playing a very familiar face.
Usagi.
I do love my humans, particularly Fauve… but they’re very good at ripping your heart out.
It was a combination adventure and survival game played over generations, and a history lesson that ended with my character’s demise, right down to her final words, and even her real voice.
Thinking of the horrors of the human past, everything took on a kind of urgency that it was difficult to describe, like being caught in the midst of a battle and knowing you must do something, but knowing anything you might do could just as easily lead to your death as your salvation.
I took the headset off and closed out the game. I had to do something… productive, I suppose.
I stretched out, laid myself back on my bed, and stretched myself out yet again. It was hard to be productive right now. It just felt like I was being pressed to death by an invisible weight…from every direction.
I grabbed my datapad and switched the screen over to my cooperation structure to do a little other work… it might work, it might not, but if it fails I lose nothing but credits. While if it works, who can say what positive impact might follow in the future?
What I was doing was going for the compensation section where pay and bonuses for players were managed. I selected my ‘discretionary’ options. As founder and the head of both organizations, in theory under the old human system I had total control over everything, in reality under that system there was an amalgamation of checks and balances that… frankly didn’t work very well, from what I’ve seen.
Under the new system, founding documentation always included discretionary percentages to where the head could act on budgets without oversight, beyond which changes had to be run through a board that handled day to day operations.
I wanted to provide an incentive for more species to send competitors to Ballyball and toward my fighting tournament, to that end, compensation needed to go up. If I wanted the Hundred Terrors to all be represented within three years, I’d need to increase the profit considerably, and expanding the range of players would further my ‘bonding’ experiments.
After this volume was released, I was asked if I ever felt guilty about essentially ‘manipulating’ so many into positions that not only caused injury, but also potentially toyed with their emotions in unpredictable ways.
No.
That is my answer.
No.
Not really.
Or if I did, not enough to get in the way of doing it. It wasn’t about my career anymore. Perhaps this is just proof that I am a dlamisa…
Or perhaps it is just proof that I am, and was, and maybe always will be, just as damaged as everyone else in my species.
Sometimes the right thing to do isn’t evident.
Sometimes the right thing to do will just get a lot of innocent people killed.
And sometimes the only way to do anything right, to save a lot of lives, to make a lot of lives better, is to do the wrong thing.
Even if that means a few have to go down hard for that to happen.
If a few bruised and bloody people in an arena played a part in making sure worlds didn’t burn, then it was absolutely worth it.
I’ll accept the judgment of history for my actions, because it means that even if I was wrong, there are people still alive to judge me for them.

2023.06.02 16:59 endersgame69 Kayobi's Days Off C12
The early part of the day was very quiet. Two people rushing in with panicked expressions raced in and snagged travel sewing kits meant for quick repairs. The relief on their faces… well, it felt pretty good to be able to provide what they needed on the spot. I smiled, pointed to the card reader, and wished them luck.
I got some funny looks, as well I should, given that they lived in this complex. The pair, one young man, one young woman, each wearing old suits that didn’t quite fit with the times or fit with their bodies, had clearly borrowed the clothes for job interviews and saw disaster in the form of a sudden and unexpectedly discovered tears in the old cloth.
If the Toriyama store hadn’t been there? Well, I doubt their day would have gone as smoothly. ‘No wonder she likes running it.’ I thought with a little smile on my face while I watched the wall clock continue to move forward one minute at a time.
I stopped clockwatching to go wipe down the counter by the bento. There was a sink and a soft cloth there waiting for use, and given the circumstances I figured… ‘Why not? What else is there to do?’ There were no customers for a fair bit, which wasn’t that surprising given the hour.
Kids were at school, most functional adults were at work, and nonfunctional ones tended not to have much in the way of money. The warm water felt good on my hands and before long the clean counter was cleaner than before.
From there I thought… ”Now what?” And I put my hands on my hips to look around the store. I looked toward the doors. ‘Still nobody.’ I thought, and went to check the inventory of things that were currently on the shelves. Dried seaweed was low… so I went to the back room behind the register to check the stock of goods… and frowned.
‘Alright… that’s not good. No, that’s bad, that’s very, very bad.’ The thought ran through my head as I looked within what was clearly the storage area for restocking… which was instead a sad sort of place, clean, like the rest of the store.
But that is what made it sad. See, I’d never held a real job on Earth, but I did know enough from movies, t.v. and manga that if you wanted to show that a place was dying, whether it be a restaurant or a store or whatever, the best way to do that was to show that it was damn near empty. ‘I’m out of… we ran out of… sorry, we don’t have…’ Whenever you heard that phrase in entertainment media, it was meant to show that a place was not doing well for itself.
There should have been multiple big boxes on pallets stacked way up, with just… all the snacks, not to mention all the cleaning supplies and prepackaged food and…
I had a sinking feeling. This was just the dry goods, the stuff that was plastic wrapped and packaged and so on.
There was a side door in this area, heavy and metal, it opened into the freezer. I cracked that door open and went inside, the icy chill hit my skin all at once and I wrapped my arms around my body and gave an audible shiver. “Brrr!” I said to myself as I ventured within.
This place should have had stacks of meat and drinks meant for the refrigerated section, all the basics that kept people going through that last hour or two.
But instead there were only a handful of boxes along the wall, none were higher than two deep up and two deep out, each aligned according to the product on the shelf.
But most of the produce shelf had just plain nothing.
My mind turned back to the two thugs who’d come into the store, and I spun on my heel, striding out of the deep freeze and venturing back to the register.
Still nobody was coming in, so I opened the register, checked for the paper envelope and cracked it open. There, I started counting.
Human money confuses me to no end. Every country has its own, and every country values every other country’s currency at a different rate from their own. Even the rate at which they valued their own currency didn’t actually match what was written on their damn stupid pieces of paper.
All I could do while I counted was grumble. “Damn stupid confusing inefficient barbaric primitive nonsensical absurd ridiculous daft temple to madness, forget why… how in all the hells of all the gods in all the Universe does anyone do anything this way?!”
I managed to get a count of the money within and tried to work out the relative cost compared to what I spent on things.
“So… let me work this out…” I mumbled and began drumming my fingers on the counter next to the register, “I pay that for a pizza… and this is like a few hundred pizzas so…”
My mouth dropped. “This is like a thousand pizzas?!” I shrieked with shock and horror… “No way?!” I couldn’t believe my own math, so I went to the far office. I’d seen through there sometimes when the door was open, and I knew Suki had a desk in there.
I tried the handle, it turned, it wasn’t locked. The wooden door swung inward when I pushed, and my eyes were greeted by a dizzying array of scattered papers, notebooks open with various numbers that were just… just dizzying to behold.
It was the exact opposite of the neat and orderly existence outside. I hesitated, fingers still curled around the doorhandle, my NEET brain screamed ‘Flee! This is an unholy land filled with math and confusion!’ But I did not flee.
I did not turn away.
I did. Not. Run.
I stepped within, leaving the door open at my back to both hear incoming customers and to ensure I could easily flee if the numbers assaulting my brain began to overwhelm me.
I did feel a little guilty, enough so that I couldn’t bring myself to actually sit in the cracked leather chair. The poor thing had clearly seen much better days, it was tilted slightly where one wheel was broken, once smooth brown back was tilted in such a way that suggested it was probably broken and couldn’t be leaned back in without it falling apart entirely.
There was one thing that perhaps saved my brain from a meltdown.
When you’re late paying a human organization, they really want you to know it. So a lot of the papers I saw were stamped ‘late notice’ or some variation thereof.
‘If she’s paying protection money to some yakuza baddies… no wonder she can’t pay her bills.’ My frown deepened as I began looking at one paper after another, just what was in that one single envelope was enough to pay most of the bottom numbers on the bills I picked up, and based on the dates, these were cumulative months.
“With that? She’d be just fine…” I mumbled and dropped the papers to fall like feathers in the breeze back down to the desk. I narrowed my eyes down at the desk.
Nobody needs to tell me that I can be sort of lazy. That’s the whole point of my vacations. But I really, really, like being a Painter. It’s not just that I’m good at it, I really see value in what I do. I hate dictators, they don’t just take lives, they take happiness. From where I’m sitting… standing, that is, these guys are just small scale dictators, leeches.
They were exactly the sort I do not like.
I heard the ding of the door as a customer walked in and hastened out to meet them. “Welcome to Toriyama’s.” I said with a smile as I stood in front of the register. I kicked the pants of the two petty tin pots out of my way, and started planning what I would do when my day was done.

2023.06.02 16:56 vurto Need a replacement for NYSC Park Slope, shutting down :(
Been going there for years so this sucks.
I've googled but just in case I missed something—any recommendations? I live in Red Hook so Gowanus, Park Slope would be good locations.
Squat racks, barbell exercises, free weights. No need for classes, just equipment.
I'm seeing places that include coaching which adds a lot more to the monthly price :(
The places I've checked out online, curious if there's recent feedback/opinions from the sub:
- Retro Fitness—read nightmare cancellation reviews, but how's the equipment and vibe there? Looks like a club from pictures. Monthly is $25.
- Cliffs at Gowanus—how's the gym there? I saw their pictures on google maps but couldn't get a good look. I also considered picking up rock climbing so I don't only spend time in the gym. Monthly is $125 I think.
- Red Hook StrengthWorks—$225 with coaching and you gotta book slots I think. If I'm paying this much I'd like open access (maybe they do but I can't tell from their website).
- OPEX South Brooklyn—$900 6-week trial with unlimited access... $480/4-week for 5 visits per week...
- Gowanus Fitness—$265/month for 8 classes, unlimited open gym.
- Harbor Fitness—$79/month, reviews on google maps sound good and it's near the old NYSC—is this worth a shot?
- South Brooklyn Weightlifting Club—Equipment looks great and looks like I'd like the place, but anybody know how much it costs? Can't find it on their website, they haven't responded to my text after they texted me ... I'm usually not a fan of these practices—why aren't they transparent about pricing on the website?
So did I miss anything? I don't think I'd be a fan of Crunch/Blink.

2023.06.02 16:55 rosie-bee-23 i want to tell you guys a story.
please remove if not allowed, but i figured it was something y'all would appreciate. (excuse formatting am on mobile)
when i was around 16, my family was really into skiing. we always rented boots and skis, which can get kind of expensive, so my dad went to yard sales and thrift stores to try to find gear. he found these neon orange ski boots in my size, but never did find anything else. it was a while before we went to use them, but we finally did. the boots fit, i had tried them on before, but once we got there i was in an INSANE amount of pain. my toes, my shins, everything. i did a couple of runs, because i try to tough things out and see if i just need to get used to it. the actual skiing didn't hurt at all, but moving around and just sliding along was hell. i tried changing my socks, moving my pants, nothing worked. it was so bad i ended up crying. after a few hours of making myself suffer because i thought it was just me being a wimp, my mom got me rental boots. INSTANT relief. i felt dumb for making myself suffer through the other boots, but i felt bad that my dad got them for me and i couldn't use them. they ended up being racing skis, slanted forwards, which is why they hurt to walk on so bad, i was essentially walking in a forced crouch. i had fun the rest of the day and was unnecessarily sore the next day.
i remembered this story because something similar happened yesterday and it made me think. i went bike riding with my family on rental bikes, we're on vacation and wanted to do some trails. i got on my bike and was instantly uncomfortable. the seat hurt so bad. we just did some horseback riding, so i attributed the pain to that. after maybe 30 minutes it was too painful to continue. again, i was embarrassed and sad that i wasted my families money and time by not being able to tough it out. my dad, bothers and fiancé did continue and had fun, but my mom stayed behind with me. i did a few small intervals of riding but it always ended up being too much. after literally 2 hours, on a whim, my mom asked me to switch bikes. instant relief. same seat, but mine for some reason was at a slant. i now literally have bruises on my legs from how bad that seat was.
these might just be random stories about me getting hurt, but i wanted to share them with you because i see something deeper in it. you can take them as you want, but to me it is a realization that i don't take myself seriously. i tell myself that im being a wuss, that i'm being dramatic, that it's SUPPOSED to hurt and that means i'm doing it right, that everyone deals with this and i'm pathetic for not being able to do it too. but it's not the truth. being comfortable is so much more important than fitting in, or doing things "the right way," or going through some bullshit rite of passage. some things are uncomfortable at first and get better, yes. stepping out of your comfort zone is vital for growth. but throwing yourself into tear jerking, bruise leaving discomfort is not healthy. know and respect your limits. i figured my witches would understand, and i encourage you to share your stories. thanks for reading this far!

2023.06.02 16:50 azraelng Which cards would you completely swap to improve thematic expression?
I'll preface this by saying I completely understand that to make a fun, balanced and competitive card game, you cannot nail the thematic connection of every card. I'm not mad about it but I sometimes think two cards could swap power, cost and ability making both cards fit better thematically while leaving the balance untouched.
For example, I think Kitty Pride and Jeff the Baby Land Shark could completely swap and both cards would fit who they are a little bit more. Kitty's phasing fits the get in anywhere mechanic a bit better while Jeff disappearing and reappearing stronger better fits the idea that you never know when he'll pop up and what he'll do.
What two cards would you swap to connect their abilities and power level to the character theme a little better?

2023.06.02 16:45 ErrorFluid Care agency director is trying to charge a vulnerable adult for missed care visits whilst admitted to hospital - potential civil litigation?
I am having a dispute with my uncle’s care agency as they are trying to charge him thousands of pounds for the care they didn’t deliver whilst he was in the hospital.
My uncle is 79 years old. He has Autism and Parkinson’s disease, making him a vulnerable adult who appointed me his power of attorney in 2020. My uncle is alone and has no other healthy relatives to advocate for him.
The care contract was drafted many years before I was concerned with his welfare, back when my father took care of his needs, but sadly my father’s health has deteriorated to the point where I have had to step in to care for him, my disabled mother and my uncle. I have requested to see the original, signed contract and have asked for clarification on the Chargeable Cancelled Care policy; will update post once a response has been received.
In the past, the care agency has never charged us for missed visits due to hospitalisations, most recently late last year from a fall that led to a pacemaker being fitted. I have invoices that prove his missed visits costs were waived whilst calls were placed on hold.
In the past, if I were to take my uncle to dinner or an event, I would give the agency 48hrs notice, and the call would be cancelled without charge. This time, when he was hospitalised after falling in the street, I expected the first two days could incur a cost, whilst my point of contact at the agency assured me all visits would be put on hold until he was discharged.
Whilst in the hospital, I received an angry phone call from the care agency director, influencing me to press the hospital to discharge my uncle expeditiously. His points were that my uncle has a low pain threshold, and since the x-ray showed no fracture, it would be more detrimental to him to be stuck in bed indefinitely. I was put in a position that felt very uncomfortable since he could not stand, let alone walk, without the help of three physiotherapists.
Fast forward to now, I’ve been invoiced for every missed call, including double rates on bank holidays, citing a missed call cancellation fee. I called the office, and they tried to tell me that if I paid the invoice, the missed call payments would go towards next month's calls once he was home. I fear that this is unlikely true, as how can I pay for a service that wasn't delivered and expect it to work as credit for next month when the agency will have large overheads for care delivery?
I need your help/advice on the legality of this. I refuse to let this unscrupulous man exploit my uncle.

2023.06.02 16:41 threwitinthetrash23 How can I potty train my non-verbal 3.5 year old?
Pretty straight-forward, I have a non-verbal 3.5 year old boy who I really need to potty train. I have an 8 year old son as well, he was potty trained before this age, he is on the spectrum but is very high functioning and was never non-verbal. My toddler is in speech therapy, I’ve had him evaluated and no one thinks he’s delayed mentally, and even the term “non-verbal” doesn’t seem to fit him because he makes all the right noises and his therapist says he’s well on his way to talking. He says a few words- Hi, Bye Bye, mom, “bubba” (his brother), he says what sounds like my boyfriends name, and he also signs a few words like “more”, “thank you”, “drink”. He follows most directions and is able to communicate his needs pretty well. But, potty training is just not happening. I’m doing all the same things I did with my older son and it’s not working. I really need him to be enrolled in a free half-day daycare program in my hometown, as I’m a single mom and paying for him to go to daycare is literally killing me and this is a great program with low student-teacher ratios and extra therapists on staff. It would literally be a life saver for me since even with assistance, daycare costs as much as my rent. The only requirement he isn’t meeting to attend is being potty trained. It’s my goal that over the summer he is potty trained, but I don’t know what else to do. Help me 😩
