2023.06.04 19:21 ibby1993 Does anyone know a good, trustworthy auto mechanic in the city?
Hello Chicagoans! My Corolla is in need of some new break pads and the north side dealer prices are ridiculous. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good, reasonably priced mechanic in the city.

Halloha, my name's Gianluca. Nice to meet you!- is what I would say in a formal setting.
But hence you found me in my area of comfort, welcome to my humble abode. Would you like some tea? Maybe you fancy some Earl Grey.
Anyway anyway I'm starting to babble lol, if you're wondering what I'm here for, it's for talking to you, interesting person out there wherever may you be. Meeting new people and all it brings is something I love. Making friends this way is amazing so therefore I presented myself!
If details are something you're into hearing, i can give you lots:
-I have to refuel every day almost cuz I go through an entire tank in 2 days or less. Love driving around. (Had to get new shoes and take up running to reduce expenses)
-I'm a car mechanic, also a construction worker, carpenter and if patience blesses me on that day; a painter.
-What am I saving up for? Well it's big, pretty massive in fact. So massive i could write an entire letter about it... Huh... Would it be cheeky if I said you can ask about this in your message? Would be a good idea.
-Had to start running everywhere for transport which is fun, I also do cycling, practice jumps and tricks at the bike park and do motorcycle and karting races. (Other categories and car racing are a work in progress, will upgrade soon)
-Music taste: this is the part where you look at a bunch of hyperbabble about bands that don't make a lot of sense unless you heard them, but I'll just throw a buncha names and you can see if any of the following applies: Radiohead, Megadeth, Fishmans, Marillion, The Black Keys, Queens of The Stone Age, Buckethead, Alphaville, Dire Straits, Little River Band, David Bowie, XTC, UB40, Commodores, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Cure.
-Ultramegahyper car and motorcycles fan, but in the weirdest way possible. My dream cars are actually cheap french hot hatches like the 306 and a 90's Renault Clio. The car I'd get first no matter what is a 1998 Ford Focus. If possible the RS version. And as for motorcycles I want a Kawasaki ZXR, 80's style. Also love German cars, especially old BMW's, first one I'd get is an e32 with the M70 V12 engine. Also love old Volkswagens and Audis, without a doubt would own an 80's Audi with one of their 5 cylinder engines and turbocharge it. Also very fond of japanese cars and will own a Nissan in any form possible, especially the 350z
-Played almost every Need For Speed game that ever released, started my journey with the franchise through Underground, and played every release as they launched. (yes even Undercover, I actually enjoyed it). I listen to the soundtracks of old NFS games in my free time. Also played Midnight Club, Forza, Assetto Corsa, FlatOut, Burnout, BeamNG... I COULD KEEP GOING.
-Not everything in my life is about cars though, my day is dedicated to music too, especially playing piano. I'm also a guitar and bass player. And really want to get more sound gear and instruments in the future (Cars and music gear? I'll be broke all the time)
-I'm relatively organized, but living by myself has shown me that being the only person inside the house, I leave stuff around unless somebody visits. But while living with my parents I didn't make any mess anywhere so I'm not an absolute demon.
-Yes, living by myself also requires me to cook and I'm actually an amazing cook. I include lots of seasoning and veggies into the meals, even soy to balance things out and eggs for protein. Learned lots while being independent.
-Fun facts about me to end this: The amount of clothes I have in total is so small that i can wash them all in one washing machine load, the house machine size. I also have 3 different pillows around me at all times cuz I don't like laying on a flat surface. I listen to music even while showering. And I own a dog that requires me to feed her on a daily basis even though I beg her to feed off the sun.
Anyways that's about it from me! Hope you enjoyed this lil introduction that is the size of the Twilight prologue, but way better.

2023.06.04 19:18 hagakure01 Is it worth enquiring about a car that isn’t advertised as for sale?
I walk past this Audi every single day while on my way to work. It’s a 2013 plate and it hasn’t been moved for over a year now. I’m currently looking for a new car, but in the current climate everything is so expensive. I’m not much of a car person, I like them, but I don’t know much about mechanics etc.
The car is pretty beat up; it has a large dent in the driver’s door and a missing wing mirror, I also imagine it has quite a few other things wrong with it. Due to its neglect, though, I reckon the owner would be willing to sell it for a decent price.
I was thinking about either knocking on the door or posting a letter. Also, if they are willing to sell, how would I go about getting it checked before I buy?
If anyone else has done this before let me know.
Cheers

2023.06.04 19:11 akpablo13 Florida to Alaska with trailer, what truck to buy
Hey everyone, I need some advice - if I’m in the wrong place, let me know. I’m tasked with buying a truck in Tampa or Orlando (near the 30’ 5000-lb bumper pull we just acquired) that will make it back home to AK without issue. I had a stock ‘99 7.3 a few years back and loved it, but I think this trip needs something a little newer. I’ve researched newer (2017-2020) Ram and Ford 6.7s for years with the fewest issues, but could use some real-world input as well as a decent dealer (or personal seller). I also plan to resell it once in AK, so I’d like something that will also have appeal up here, hence the Ram/Ford preference. What do you recommend?

2023.06.04 19:09 elizabethcarnahan1 I Asked Chatgpt How I can Recover my Lost Assets
Losing assets can be a distressing experience, but there are steps you can take to increase your chances of recovering them. Whether it's a misplaced valuable item or a financial asset that seems to have vanished, this guide will provide you with a roadmap to follow in your quest to recover your lost assets.
- Gather Information: The first step in recovering lost assets is to gather all relevant information. This includes documentation, receipts, photographs, or any other evidence that can help you establish ownership and prove the value of the lost assets. The more detailed and accurate your information, the better your chances of recovery.
- Report the Loss: If your assets were lost due to theft, file a police report as soon as possible. Provide the authorities with all the relevant details, including a description of the assets, any identifying marks, and the approximate value. This report will create an official record of the loss, which can be helpful during the recovery process.
- Notify Insurance Companies: If your lost assets are covered by an insurance policy, contact your insurance company to report the loss. Provide them with the necessary details, such as the policy number, description of the assets, and the estimated value. They will guide you through the claim process and may require supporting documentation.
- Check Online Marketplaces and Lost & Found Databases: For valuable items that may have been sold or found by someone else, search popular online marketplaces, such as eBay or Craigslist, to see if they are listed for sale. Additionally, check local lost and found databases, community bulletin boards, or social media groups where people often post about lost items. Reach out to the relevant parties if you find any potential leads.
- Engage Professional Services: In cases where the lost assets involve significant financial stakes or specialized expertise, consider hiring professional services. For example, asset recovery firms specialize in tracing and recovering lost financial assets. They have the knowledge and resources to navigate complex legal and financial systems to help you reclaim your assets.
- Spread the Word: Use various channels to spread the word about your lost assets. This can include creating flyers or posters with detailed descriptions and contact information. Share this information with local businesses, pawnshops, antique dealers, and other relevant organizations. The more people who know about your lost assets, the higher the chances of someone spotting them.
- Monitor Online Auctions and Secondhand Marketplaces: Regularly monitor online auctions, pawnshops, and secondhand marketplaces for any signs of your lost assets. Stay vigilant and keep an eye out for items that match the description or characteristics of your lost assets. If you come across a potential match, gather evidence and contact the relevant authorities or professionals to assist you in recovering them.
- Be Persistent and Patient: Recovering lost assets can take time and effort. It's important to be persistent and patient throughout the process. Follow up on leads, stay in touch with the authorities, insurance companies, or professionals involved, and remain hopeful. Sometimes, it may take months or even years to locate and reclaim your lost assets.
Conclusion: Losing assets can be a stressful experience, but by following these steps, you can increase your chances of recovering them. Remember to gather information, report the loss to the police and insurance companies, utilize online resources, engage professional services if necessary, spread the word, and stay persistent. With determination and a systematic approach, you can enhance the likelihood of recovering your lost assets.

2023.06.04 19:03 Live_in_a_Simulation Is RockAuto.com legit for Tundra 1st gen part ?
Hi,
I'm new in the US and got my first car (2000 Toyota Tundra V8) with some work that has to be done. I'm not use the the US market, where to shop for part etc etc. Someone told me to have a look at RockAuto and the price are just so cheap that it seems like a scam compared with AutoZone first result from google.
I have to change my radiator, the lower ball joint, the timing belt, probably my suspension in the front (not sure yet I would have to check) and for finish my front all the breaks + rotors ... Also some handles for the doors and tailgate, and some cosmetics stuff...
Can I trust thoses parts ? Is there some manufacturer with bad reputation and some with good ?
Do you recommend some dealers for the most safety sensitive part of my list ? (Timing belt, breaks, LBJ ?)
Should I go for Toyota part directly from
toyota.com or the manufacturer has responsibility to make part that are safe enough ?
Is there a way to find out if the part are safer than other ?

2023.06.04 18:57 floatersforalgernon Sunday discussion: Numbering/lettering or naming on car models?
Which approach do you find useful and/or confusing in creating car models? European brands generally go with the numbering/lettering option to differentiate segments. As far as I can tell:
- BMW's 2, 3, 5, 7 for sedans in increasing order in size and X for SVUs.
- Mercedes' A, C, E, S for sedan classes while G denoting the SUV class.
- Audi's 3, 4, 5, 6 for sedans and Q for SUVs
- Porsche is a bit weird. 718 and 911 for sedans, but they name their SUV
- Ferrari... oh my god.
- Lamborghini... ay dios mío.
Models of Asian brands are generally based on words, which makes it a tiny bit difficult when it comes to differentiating size and segment, such as:
- Toyota's Corolla, Camry, Avalon, none of which designates any clue as to size neither does their SUV line-up Corolla Cross, RAV4, 4Runner, etc.
- Honda's Civic, Accord, HR-V, CR-V, Pilot, Passport, etc.
- Hyundai's Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Kona, Tucson, Palisade, etc.
- Kia's Rio, Forte, K5 (?), Soul, Seltos, Sportage, Telluride, etc.
American brands are mixed:
- Ford's flagship truck line-up follows the numbering F-150, F-250, etc., but then all the other models are named: Maverick, Focus, Fiesta, Mustang, etc.
- Chevy, similarly, has the C# designation for Corvette, but names all the other models: Bolt, Blazer, Camaro, Silverado, etc.
- Cadillac's CT-# is for sedans and XT-# for SUVs, but they've got also Lyric, Escalade, Celestiq, etc.
- Tesla's could be the most intriguing: S - 3 - X - Y.
If you had a car company, which option would you choose?

Still waiting on my embody order from the sale and I’m wondering if it’s even worth the wait at this point. Am I in for a treat or should I just cancel the order and get a gesture? I’ve sat in the gesture and thought it was pretty comfortable. Really enjoyed how my back felt in this chair but my only gripe was how hard and jagged the armrests were. I don’t have a HM dealer nearby so I couldn’t try it but this sub is always hyping that chair so I placed the order due to the 30 day return. I shouldn’t be in a rush but my secretlabs is killing my back lately

2023.06.04 18:47 richray84 Ongoing Infotainment issues
I have a UK MY21 Formentor V2 1.5 Manual. Almost since the beginning I’ve had software issues, issues with the GPS and various errors/warnings. Posted here about a year ago, see link.
In November when I had several issues on a trip up to the Lake District (GPS thought we were in the middle of the Irish Sea while on the M6) and getting nowhere with the local dealerships, I contacted Cupra directly. They sent a box of fancy picnic foods and asked me to book the car in for the latest update that had been created. That was done in March, that failed, if anything it made things worse with more regular restarts and the GPS gets lost even sooner. Cupra asked me to book it back in with the dealer to “investigate”. They obviously couldn’t find an answer.
Cupra CS have since said there’s nothing more they can do until the next update comes out, but have no timescales for that and obviously no guarantee that it’ll solve anything. They want to close the complaint ticket and have graciously said I can re-open it if needed after the next update.
I’m beyond frustrated with them now. It’s such an irritating issue and to be told “sorry, nothing we can do” isn’t helping.
I’ve been looking at raising it with the Motor Ombudsman, it asks what you’d like as a resolution and I don’t know what would be reasonable. I don’t want to return it. I love the car, it’s great until the errors appear. There’s nothing really like it on the market and anything else is now more expensive due to the interest rate hikes. The ombudsman may not even be able to help as I can still use it as a car, albeit getting annoyed by it regularly. When some of the safety feature errors come up or the infotainment resets it can be a little distracting but doubt that’s enough of a case. Any car can drive, though in my mind I’ve paid more to have additional features that aren’t working consistently and usually don’t work when I actually need them.
Has anyone else complained to Cupra or the Ombudsman about issues and had a successful response?

2023.06.04 18:42 bostonv46 Here is my template
2023.06.04 18:40 Ghudda Reduce gun ownership rates with a bottle deposit like program, but for guns, that also ties the deposit to the original purchaser.
If you don't know what a bottle deposit is, when you purchase a bottle of something like a soda or beer, you pay a deposit on it, usually 5 or 10 cents. When you return an empty bottle you get your deposit back.
It's an inconsequential amount of money to some but pretty substantial to others and this small incentive greatly decreases litter of this type as people tend to hang onto their 'trash' to return it instead of tossing it into the woods. There will still be litter, just less of it. When a deposit isn't returned, that deposit money can help fund cleanup efforts.
Let's apply the same type of effect to guns. When you purchase a gun from a registered gun dealer, the purchaser must put a huge deposit onto it (like 1k or 2k) that's paid at the time of purchase. This deposit is tied to the purchaser, the gun's serial numbers, with the funds being held by the state. The purchaser can sell or return the gun back to any registered dealer and get their deposit back.
You can sell a gun to another person and get your deposit back by both parties showing up at a registered gun dealer. Sell their gun to the gun dealer to claim the deposit. Then the second party can repurchase the gun and register a new deposit in their name instead. Effectively using the gun dealer as a legal notary for the sale.
If a weapon is sold without an associated deposit with the sale, it's breaking the law on both parties.
The state can finance execution of the program with the interest generated by investing the deposits.
So why bother with this?
If the purchaser sells their gun without a registered dealer, they lose their deposit. If they lose their gun or it gets stolen, they lose their deposit. This deposit puts a massive incentive for people to be a responsible gun owner and keep track of what they own and securing it. A deposit artificially makes owning a gun more expensive but owners at any time can get their deposit back by forfeiting or selling their gun back to a registered dealer. In turn this greatly inflates prices of weapons on the black market and secondary market. Effectively someone, somewhere, had to lose a huge deposit in order for a new gun to be jailbroken, so the price of unregistered and black market weapons should increase by about the same amount.
It also gives people a reason to get rid of their guns when they no longer have an active reason to keep holding onto them. Would you rather keep your panic purchased random 200$ pistol locked in a safe for the next decade or return it and get ~2,200 back?
This is a long term strategy. It's not an overnight fix for the gun epidemic but a long term 30 year strategy to curtail more loose guns from being created.

2023.06.04 18:34 BoyTitan Can anyone reach out to luna cycle and tell them stop putting the egg rider display on dirt bikes.
I am looking to get a electric dirt bike and my one biggest flaw is lunacycle are the us dealer for a lot of em surron and taleria currently. They absolutely ruin the bikes with the egg rider display. Why would I want a watch sized display on my bike. If someone put that piece of junk on a gas bike it would get ripped to shreds for being a joke in reviews. A lot of people don't know the bike does not come stock like this from china luna cycle is going out their way putting a display the size of my watch on bikes. Its total non sense. Theres no way to just easily swap the display due to the motor controllers factory programming. Trying to look at your speed on that small joke of a display is a borderline safety hazard. At least give the option for a different display. You think having a tiny display no one can see is cool because you like a clean cockpit cool. Doesn't mean everyone else wants the exact same tiny display. Give the option for a different display. Likely going to pay more for a rfn ares and swap to a larger rear gear for higher top speed since I can see the display on that.

2023.06.04 18:34 Flash_Reservoir Are these 2 cars as equal as I believe?
Which car should I buy, both the same spec, 'mint' condition 2016 car in with no mechanical problems I'm aware of:
Car 1 - £10k (I don't think I could get anything off):
Dealership sale
60k miles
Full main dealer service history
Serviced by dealer before sale
Car 2 - £10k (I think based on seller comments I could get £9.5k):
Private seller Cat N, just been repaired at local body shop, I would be the first owner since repair. Crash was front corner collision, supposedly no air bags deployed (I've seen the pictures and this seems accurate from the auction pictures)
1 previous owner
9k miles - could it be a problem if I start putting 10k miles per year? I have verified based on MOT history and it's done an even amount of miles each year
'Service due in 3k miles' according to seller
I feel that before test driving them, these cars are fairly level and equally good option (as long as Cat N is £500 cheaper), is this a fair take? I have young kids so slightly concerned about airbag problems with the Cat N, should I be worried about that if there's no airbag fault codes?
Thanks!

2023.06.04 18:30 kamikaze2112 '18 S3 blue smoke on startup
Recently I've been getting a bit of blue smoke on startup, both cold starts and if it's been sitting for an hour or so on a warm start. Once it's running it's fine. Just about everything I've read points to faulty valve stem seals but is there anything else I should be checking? Car feels like it's a little down on power, and there's no noticeable leaks or anything. Dealer doesn't know what it could be, they claim they never see this problem on these cars.
I've got an IE stage 1 ECU/TCU on it and it's just a tick over 120000km (74.5k miles). It's otherwise stock. I have an IE downpipe in a box at home along with a stage 2 ECU flash but I'm hesitant to install it with this issue. It seems to run and drive just fine despite it feeling down on power, no codes or lights.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi all, purchased a '23 XC90 T8 in Feb and have loved every second of owning it but also have been preparing myself for the inevitable dreaded check engine light, based on feedback here and on SwedeSpeed.
It finally happened, but I'm wondering if it's related to the OTA 2.9 software update. I got the notice on Friday that the software was ready for installation but was on a road trip and decided to wait until I returned home on Saturday to install. No issues on the journey home. Later that evening, the CEL came on while I was going to dinner. When I got home I installed the software. Turned on the car after update was complete, and the light was still on. I plugged in the car to fully charge (it was still quasi depleted since my trip home). This morning the light seems to be off.
It seems too coincidental for the light to go on in tandem with the software update, so could that be the issue? I did purchase an OBD 2 scanner and although I'm still trying to figure this thing out, I think the code it kicked back was P0D1F...date/time synchronization.
Anyway, I don't think this is anything serious, will call the dealer this week of course, but just curious if anyone else had a CEL that went on in tandem with the OTA update and resolved itself?
