A couple of tornadoes, very large hail to 3 inches in diameter and severe thunderstorm winds of 60 to 70 mph are possible this afternoon/evening across southeast New Mexico and west Texas. Large hail and a few severe gusts will also be possible from eastern Colorado to southeastern Montana. ...Eastern NM/West TX... Morning surface analysis shows a remnant outflow boundary from overnight storms has pushed southwestward across eastern NM, with the boundary and low-level moisture banked against the Sacramento Mountains. Visible imagery shows that the low clouds should slowly erode through the early afternoon, leading to a corridor of backed low-level winds, considerable moisture, and moderate CAPE from east of ABQ into southeast NM. Also, water vapor loop and model guidance may indicate a subtle mid-level shortwave trough over south-central NM that will overspread the area helping to encourage convective initiation. All available CAM solutions develop widely scattered supercells by mid-afternoon along this corridor. Forecast soundings show steep mid-level lapse rates and sufficient bulk shear for organized supercells capable of very large hail. Hodograph shapes enlarge after 00z as the nocturnal low-level jet strengthens. This may encourage the development of a couple tornadoes as the storms track southeastward. Similar to the last several days, isolated but intense storms may persist well after dark and spread into west TX. ...Eastern CO/WY and southeast MT... Strong heating is occurring today from the foothills of central CO northward into eastern WY and southeast MT. Dewpoints well into the 50s, combined with cool mid-level temperatures (-12 to -15 at 500mb) and steep lapse rates will provide a favorable environment for scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Deep-layer vertical shear is not very strong, so organized multicell and only isolated supercell structures are expected. Nevertheless, large hail will be possible in the stronger storms throughout this area. Numerous severe thunderstorms are expected across parts of the southern Great Plains tonight. A few tornadoes and very large hail are most probable across parts of central and southwest Oklahoma into north Texas this evening. There was some discussion of this topic in the thread on the Lubbock Super Regional (Texas Tech vs Stanford) a couple of days ago and I wanted to provide some additional and/or corrected information here.
I used to have some papers on artificial turf temperatures, which was a "hot" topic back in the 1970s and 80s, related to MLB fields and player concerns, but I can't find them now. So I did a very brief search in Google Scholar to pull up more recent stuff; among them was this nice experimental study from 2016, comparing the thermal regimes of natural (NT) and artificial (AT) turfs in Hong Kong. If you're at all interested in the topic, it's definitely worth a read. I haven't yet worked all the way through it myself.
A few bullet points:
It might also be worth noting that the players spend about half their time in the dugouts; the worse sufferers are the umpires, and especially the home plate umpire.
My NWS forecast for Lubbock shows basically uninterrupted sunshine for the next several days, and each game is scheduled for a 2:00 start, local time. The high temperatures are expected to be around 100 F each day, and which should occur during the game.

- Maximum NT temps reached about 40 C (104 F) at the same time, thus about 54 degrees F cooler
- The AT tested has low albedo (reflectivity) and low specific heat, which basically translates to a surface that heats up greatly at high sun angles but which also cools down rapidly as the sun angle drops
- Citation of some earlier research that showed that within five minutes of exposure to a turf at 52 C (~126 F), the inner surface of a football shoe reached 42 C (~108 F). A "heat pain" threshold of 45 C (113 F) is also cited.

2019.05.19 06:10 Night_OwI PSU storm chase 2019
Sooo on Friday (May 17th) my university's storm chase group and I got back from our 12-day adventure in the Midwest. Our overall journey first took us from our start in central PA all the way down to Amarillo, TX where we were nailed with a heat burst as we were trying to get into our hotel that night. The following day (May 8th) we headed south to Lubbock where we chased an HP supercell for a while. The storm did produce a couple of tornadoes, but they were all closely rain-wrapped to the point where we would've had to be WAY too close to it to see them. The first confirmed one was in/near Tulia, but we got essentially cockblocked by the Palo Duro canyon. So we trekked northeast to Clarendon where another tornado developed and passed just to our north. After this we headed back to Amarillo for the night.
After a few down days where we played tourist in Amarillo/Lubbock visiting a couple of NWS offices, the Texas Air and Space Museum, and the Texas Tech National Wind Institute (plus radar), we traveled north to Wichita, KS and spent the night before heading east to chase near Kansas City, MO. We got on some late-afternoon storms that turned out to be absolutely stunning to look at and had an insane amount of lightning after sunset. There was rotation within the storm but it never produced.
This was followed by traveling to Davenport, IA the next day where we stayed overnight in order to get in position for the following day's chase. We targeted Northern Illinois/Indiana, but ultimately that storm developed a left component and collapsed on itself. An unfortunate end to our trip, but our problem there was we left our starting location too late.
We had a secondary mission on this trip, and that was participating in a "mini" hail study to provide IBHS with invaluable data on the spatial distribution of hail size within a swath. The May 8th storm and one near Fort Stockton, TX produced hail but we couldn't find any due to it likely being wind-driven away from roads. However, we did find lots of hail in the paths of the two storms in Missouri (first storm was in Maysville and the second was in Mooresville/Ludlow). Our largest stone was 2.53" along the longest axis, although that was due to the stone having a long spike. Overall that was a very exciting day for us, between the beauty of the storms, the prolific lightning, and two successful hail swaths.
I believe I can speak for the whole group when I say we all had an amazing time on this trip! Even though we didn't actually see a tornado or funnel cloud, there was a lot of fun to be had and excitement to be felt. We learned a lot and gained valuable experience. Thank you Penn State Storm Chase Team for giving me (and all of us) an experience of a lifetime!
