2023.06.02 16:56 Lofi_Loki [Trip Report] GSMNP overnight loop. Mt. Sterling fire tower via Baxter creek/BMT.

I went out over Memorial Day weekend for a 22mi loop in the Smokies. It served as a shakedown of some new gear which I’ll touch on as I go. My lighterpack was pretty much this.
Day 1: 11.9 miles, 4800 vertical feet. Pics from day 1. I will not lie. The climb kicked all of our asses. It was 100% doable and was mostly because I’ve been doing next to no hiking and only a little running recently. The last half of the day was smooth sailing. It was strangely dry up there with one semi-useable water source until just before the summit. We got to the fire tower and it’s easily some of the best views in the whole park. https://imgur.com/a/3e82IUT/ We chilled and ate lunch under the tower. I packed out some pancakes and hash brown casserole from breakfast that morning.
The trail between the fire tower and Laurel Gap shelter was super well maintained. We saw one bear and a wild boar and her babies. The shelter great. There was plenty of room but I set up the Xmid because that was part of the point of the trip. I have zero complaints. The ground was super loose which backed up the fact that I take full sized groundhogs on every trip. Staking out the ridgeline guylines helped a ton I’m sure. We stayed completely dry and even though it poured all night, condensation was no issue. I did opt to pitch the tent a bit high to get a little more ventilation which caused some spatter on our gear in the vestibules, but it wasn’t a big issue. My new Flex 22 kept me toasty and did not seem to pick up any water (weight before vs after the trip was the same). I had Skurka’s beans and rice for dinner which is always excellent. I add textured vegetable protein and tomato powder to give it some more substance.
Day 2: 11.4 miles. This was smooth sailing (mostly). The initial descent on Balsam Mountain Trail and Gunter Fork Trail was steep, slippery, and had 5-6 blowdowns. We had to take our packs off to shimmy through/under quite a few. We averaged <2mph here easily. Once things leveled out a bit it was smooth until we came to something like 8 water crossings in 4 miles. Some of which were around/over knee deep because of the rain the night before and that morning. I love water crossings so this was a blast personally. My feet stayed comfortable between the Injiji liners and thin darn toughs. This’ll be my go-to combo going forward. There was obviously tons of water day 2.
The Mariposa was great. I have had a Kumo for years so I knew I’d like it. The Trail Sender pants dried quickly and the solar eclipse fleece+Frogg toggs were a great combo for me as usual. The only other new piece of gear was Showa 282 gloves which are 10/10. For $20 from Amazon they outperform every other glove/mitten I’ve tried on every metric I care about (comfort, grip, dexterity, and waterproofness). They got dunked (not past the cuff) when I ate shit on a creek crossing and kept my hands warm and dry all day. Every bit of my body can be cold and wet and if my hands are warm I’m happy so these were excellent.

It’s time for the 2nd round of HS graduations around VCU. This time we get the double impact of Henrico County Public Schools Graduations being hosted at VCU’s Stuart C. Siegel Center on West Broad Street starting on Monday, June 5th to the 8th. And Richmond Public Schools Graduations being hosted at the Altria Theater the 6th to the 8th.

Cross-posting from the MS subreddit cause not everyone with MS has spinal cord problems and I also want to hear from people with SCI more generally.
I'm going to a theme park this weekend, and I really want to ride a lot of the rollercoasters, but I have MS with mainly spinal cord lesions (essentially incomplete non-traumatic SCIs) at C1, C4-5, T10, and T11. I'm not too worried about temporary symptom exacerbations (e.g., dizziness), but I am worried if the G-forces or more rough/jerky rides like wooden coasters could interact badly with my c-spine lesions.
Googling it, I can't find anything to indicate it's dangerous like with heart conditions, but there's not a lot of info out there. My gut tells me it's probably fine, but part of me still feels so fragile post-diagnosis. So I was wondering, anyone here ride rollercoasters with high c-spine injuries and/or lesions? How did it go?

Child I, event #3

Nicholas Johnson KC, for the prosecution, continues to cross-examine Letby in the case of Child I. He moves on to the third incident, on October 14, 2015.
Mr Johnson says Letby does not refer to this incident in her statement. Letby, in her evidence, said she did not recall this night.
Letby rules out staffing levels, medical incompetence or staffing mistakes as a contributory factor in the collapse of Child I for this incident.

The staffing rota for October 13-14, 2015 is shown to the court, with Letby in room 1 as the designated nurse for Child I. Joanne Williams is the designated nurse for two other babies in room 1 that night.
Letby is asked to look at her nursing notes for that night. Mr Johnson says Child I was tolerating handling and 'tone appears improved', according to Letby's notes.
The notes add: 'At 0500 abdomen noted to be more distended and firmer in appearance with area of discolouration spreading on right-hand side, veins more prominent. Oxygen requirement began to increase, colour became pale...gradually requiring 100% oxygen...blood gases poor as charted. Clear air entry, slightly reduced on left, chest movement reduced...continued to decline. Reintubated at approx 0700 - initially responded well. Abdomen firm and sitended. Overall colour pale. Xrays carried out...resuscitation commenced as documented...night and day staff members present'
Letby says she cannot recall the discolouration now. She does not recall it moved, but it was spreading by getting larger.
NJ: "Where did you get the time of 5 o'clock from?"
LL: "I don't know. I don't know if it's from paper charts or memory."
Mr Johnson says if Letby had seen this, she would have escalated it to a doctor.
LL: "I can't comment on what time the doctor did come."

At 5am, Letby recorded that Child I's "abdomen was noted to be more distended" with an "area of discolouration" that was "spreading" and "veins more prominent".
Resuscitation on the infant was commenced at this time.
Mr Johnson asks Letby about this incident.
"I can't comment because I don't remember it now," she tells the court.
"Don't or won't?" Mr Johnson asks.
"Don't," says Letby.

Mr Johnson says almost 24 hours earlier, Child I was found "almost dead", and then this incident happened. He asks what Letby would have done.
LL: "I would have escalated it to someone, senior like a doctor."
Mr Johnson shows the doctor's note, which mentions: "Abdomen distended and mottled".
LL: "I can't say specifically what time I asked him to come, the note says he came at 5.55am".

Letby says "squeaky" air entry is not an emergency.
"I can't say now what time I called the doctors or who I escalated it to," Letby says.
"'Asked to see patient' is not very urgent," Mr Johnson says, referring to her notes.
Letby says there is no other way to call a doctor, other than an emergency call which she didn't think was warranted.

Mr Johnson says this would have been an emergency for Child I.
LL: "I don't believe it was an emergency, I believe it showed a decline."
NJ: "You sabotaged [Child I] at about 6 o'clock, didn't you?"
LL: "No."

A prescription chart shows Dr Matthew Neame prescribed morphine sulphate for Child I, and the infusion was commenced at 5.50am.
A fluid chart shows '0530 abdo distended++' in Letby's writing.
Letby says by 6am, the oxygen requirement had gone up to 100% for Child I, from 60% at 5am.
Letby had written 'squeaky' for the oxygen level at 5am. Letby tells the court this meant the air entry for Child I was not clear.
Letby says squeaky air entry is not an emergency.
Mr Johnson says there is also expanding discolouration and a distended abdomen.
Letby denies copying the word 'squeaky' for the 5am oxygen column from Dr Neame's 5.55am note. Letby: "I disagree."
Letby says she recalls Dr Neame saying the mottling was unusual; she cannot recall the mottling specifically.
A report showed Child I's gaseous distention of the bowel had increased on October 14 since the previous x-ray at October 13. Child I had been on a ventilator and nil by mouth.
Letby denies injecting air into Child I.
NJ: "You had inflated [Child I] with air, hadn't you?"
LL: "No."
At 7am, Child I had a significant desaturation.
Letby's note: 'Reintubated at approx 0700 - initially responded well. Abdomen firm and distended. Overall colour pale. Xrays carried out.'
NJ: "That is because you were sabotaging her, isn't it?"
LL: "No."
Letby says she does not remember the 7am desaturation "with any clear detail".

"Child I collapsed again at 7am, didn't she?" Nick Johnson, prosecuting, says.
"Yes," says Letby,
"This is one of those cases where air was going in and out of her but she was not oxygenating. Do you remember that?"
"Yes," says Letby.
The night shift handover commences at 7.30am, so at this point Child I was handed into the care of another nurse.
Letby continues to say she does not remember this shift.

Child I, event 4 (fatal collapse)

Chester Standard
Mr Johnson moves to the final event for Child I, when she died on October 23.
Prior to that, Child I had been moved to Arrowe Park Hospital before returning to the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit.
Mr Johnson shows Letby observation charts for Child I from the previous day. Letby accepts Child I's observations were stable, save for one slightly raised respiration rate reading.
She agrees Child I was self-ventilating in air at this point. She accepts Child I's abdomen was, the previous day, soft and non-distended.
NJ: "Would you agree that despite three life-threatening events in the previous three weeks, [Child I] appeared to be in a stable condition?"
LL: "Yes."

For the night of October 22-23, Lucy Letby is a designated nurse for a baby in nursery room 2 and one in room 3. Ashleigh Hudson is the designated nurse for Child I in room 1 and one other baby.
Mr Johnson tells the court the baby in room 2 went to a hospital in Stoke during that night shift.
Letby says there were staffing issues, which were "not ideal", which were a contributory factor in the treatment of Child I following the collapse, in that a doctor had to be called away during the event.
Letby: "Considering what [Child I] had been through, she was a poorly baby, the doctors were not with her at all times...once she deteriorated."
​ Sky News:
"I think potentially there were staffing issues that may have affected her [the nurse on duty] but I don't know how," she says.
"The staffing was not ideal."
Mr Johnson asks if this is because she thought the colleague assigned to Child I was "not up to the job".
Letby says no, and says she means because "the doctor had to be called away to another delivery" in the labour suite.
"You didn't like being in nursery three though," Mr Johnson asks.
"No, I disagree," says Letby.
He then asks if she was jealous of her colleague for being in a higher dependency nursery.
"No, I have nothing to be jealous of," says Letby.

Letby adds she believed Ashleigh Hudson was capable of looking after Child I, for Child I's nursing needs at this stage.

The neonatal schedule for that night is shown to the court.
Letby sent a message on October 22 at 8.47pm to a colleague: '...Unit nice. Transport on way to take my baby back to Stoke. Only 8 babies. Off duty not out. X'
Mr Johnson says this refers to the baby he mentioned earlier who was transferred out during that night.
The court hears that transfer process, noted as completing at 1am, is not a 'five-minute' process, and takes time and involves family communication.

Child I collapsed at 11.57pm.
Letby denies falsifying a note for the Stoke-transfer baby prior to that at 11pm.
The court is shown a nursing note by Ashleigh Hudson, which the court heard was timed at 10.57pm. 'Longline removed due to constant occlusions; neonatal nurse Lucy Letby unable to flush, so Paeds Reg Rachel Chang informed.'
Dr Chang had written, for the Stoke-transfer baby at 10pm, the baby was safe for transfer.
Letby's note for this baby was written at 10.50pm, and completed at 10.52pm. It included a documentation of a longline infusion with a 10% dextrose fluid. Letby has co-signed the document.
Mr Johnson says the 'original 2300' reading has been changed to '2400' by Letby.
Letby said the '2300' reading was an error and it was changed to '2400' as the correct time. She adds: "The charts are there for everybody to look at."

This transfer, Letby says, would not have been a five-minute job and would have required a handover with the transport team and speaking to the family.
"I am going to suggest you were dealing with [the other baby] at 11pm," Mr Johnson says.
"Do you remember falsifying a recording relating to [the other baby]?"
Letby refutes this.
The court is then shown records relating to the baby in Letby's care. A close-up image of a medical note shows this baby being given a dextrose infusion at 00.00 (midnight), prior to the transfer.
But, the prosecution says, the four has been changed from a three, and the actual time this took place was 23.00 (11pm). They are accusing Letby of changing the notes to give herself an alibi in the lead-up to Child I's collapse.
"No I would not have changed a record, that was obviously written in error," Letby says. She says the note would have been signed off by her colleague.
The prosecution says she could have changed the time after it was signed.

Letby denies falsifying a fluid balance chart for the Stoke-transfer baby.
Mr Johnson asks if Letby recalls what Ashleigh Hudson said for the 11.57pm desaturation. He says Ms Hudson gave evidence to say Child I was crying, making a noise she had not heard before, different to a cry for hunger.
Letby: "I did not hear that cry at that point. When I entered that nursery, she was quiet...and apnoeic."
Letby says for this event, it was a case where one of the three nurses on duty that night would have had to come and assist in room 1.
Letby says she does not recall Ashleigh Hudson going to call for Child I's parents.

Nick Johnson, the prosecution barrister, asks Letby if she remembers saying she had "no recollection" of Child I, other than what appeared in the notes.
"I don't remember this baby without the notes," Letby agrees.
Letby's colleague said before Child I collapsed she had "been very unsettled" and made a sound she had never heard before.
Her colleague described this as a "loud, relentless,s almost constant with no fluctuation, cry" that was "very different to a hunger cry".
"This is another case of you gravitating to nursery one when you were in other less acute nurseries," Mr Johnson asks.
Letby refutes this was deliberate and says one of the three members of staff "would have had to assist".
She was involved in giving Child I medication - something she says she cannot remember but is backed up by the nursing notes.
The court is then shown more nursing notes, where the times have clearly been changed - with digits overwritten.
​ Chester Standard
Letby says there is an error on the IV chart, and the time has changed.
Mr Johnson: "Three different mistakes on two different babies?"
Letby says she does not know who wrote in the different times.
NJ: "How do those sorts of mistakes happen?
Letby says when the unit gets busy, "we" can make errors on the paperwork.
NJ: "We? Or you?"
LL: "I don't believe it would have been me - we would both have been there for it."
NJ: "Or is it you altering medical records to put some time between you and serious events for [Child I]?"
LL: "No."
Letby adds: "I did not deliberately falsify any paperwork."

At 1.06am, Child I was crying again, the court hears.
Letby recalls Child I was crying, but cannot recall being there by the cotside first. She accepts she was in the nursery.
Mr Johnson asks if Ashleigh Hudson was called over by Letby.
LL: "She might have been in the nursery when I called her, I couldn't say."
Letby adds she could have "come in" [as her defence statement says] from the other part of the nursery.
Letby says she had her hands in the incubator, "trying to settle [Child I]."
LL: "My assessment of [Child I] at that time was she was hungry and rooting."
NJ: "You had pumped her full of air?
LL: "No."
NJ: "You were doing your best to kill her?"
LL: "No."
Letby: "I have never injected air into any baby."

NJ: "Do you remember interrupting [Child I]'s mother?"
LL: "No."
Mr Johnson says Child I's mother, in agreed evidence, recalled Letby was "smiling" and had talked about how Child I had been going on about 'enjoying' her bath. Child I had been bathed as part of the bereavement process following her passing.
NJ: "Why did you say that?"
LL: "It's trying to, in that awful situation - it wasn't meant with any malice. We still talk to them and treat them as if they were alive. It wasn't joking or...malice, it was trying to reflect on a happier memory."
NJ: "How can you say such things?"
LL: "She had her first bath when she was alive and that was what she had enjoyed, not the one when she had passed away."
NJ: "How do you know it was her first bath?"
LL: "Because I was there, we took photographs, it was a big occasion."
Mr Johnson asks how many baths Child I had in Arrowe Park - Letby says she cannot say.
NJ: "You were getting a thrill out of the grief and despair in that room, weren't you?
LL: "Absolutely not."

Child J

Copies of Letby's defence statement, edited to the relevant parts in the case by agreement, are handed out to members of the jury.
Mr Johnson moves to the case of Child J, a baby girl born on October 31, 2015.
Letby, in her defence statement, said she had never seen a baby with stomas before at the Countess, and other doctors were "equally unsure about stomas", and the parents were "more proficient" than the Countess staff at dealing with stomas.
A handover sheet was taken to Letby's home, the defence statement adds, unintentionally.
The night shift rota for November 26-27 is put up. Two band 4 unit nurses are named in the rota.
Child J was in room 4. The designated nurse was Nicola Dennison, a band 4 nurse also looking after one other baby in room 4.
Letby was the designated nurse for two babies in room 3 that night.
Letby rules out staffing levels as a contributory factor in Child J's collapse, nor medical incompetence, nor staffing mistakes.
Letby accepts the evidence from Child J's mother that Child J was well and "about to go home in a day or two".
​
Letby adds there was an issue with Child J's stoma care, as it had been discussed among the nurses that they had little experience. She adds she does not "want to name names" on any specific nurses' lack of experience.
Mr Johnson refers to Nicola Dennison's previous experience with stomas, which she said in evidence she had experience of it.
Letby says over the years, she did not recall any other babies with stomas.
Mr Johnson says band 4 nurses, as said by Letby in evidence on May 16, should not be involved in stoma bag care, as they would be unfamiliar with the procedure. Letby said: "The unit was very busy and we had to use staff where we could."
Letby says she was not referring to Nicola Dennison specifically, but the nursing situation overall.
She says there was not an issue over staffing levels at the time of Child J's collapse.
Asked to explain a text message she had sent to a colleague Letby tells the court: "Sometimes I felt nurses would take on roles which I didn't think they were trained enough in".
The next message adds: "It's shocking really that they are willing to take the responsibility for things that they have no training or experience etc on. Don't think they appreciate the potential difficulties X"
Letby agrees she believed it was "potentially dangerous".
Mr Johnson says the impression of the court was that band 4 nurses were not qualified in stoma care, and the hospital was 'cutting conrers' by assigning such nurses to those tasks. Letby agrees.
The court is shown a document about the duties for special care babies [such as Child J], which includes stoma care.
LL: "You need to appreciate the context that the unit was not familiar with stomas."
NJ: "This nurse was familiar with stomas, wasn't she?"
LL: "In her opinion, yes."
Mr Johnson says Letby was deliberately creating the impression to the jury that the care for Child J was deficient.
LL: "I do think that. I don't think she had a high standard of care.
"I don't think anyone was overly confident in saying 'I know what to do with a stoma'. We were led by the parents..."
Mr Johnson asks why Nicola Dennison was not challenged about this.
LL: "I can't answer that."

Letby denies not being happy in nursery room 3, or being happier in nursery room 1.
Letby accepts the evidence of Nicola Dennison that babies in room 4 should have the light off overnight, as they are due to go home.
Mr Johnson says two pairs of events for child J happened; one pair in room 4, one pair in room 2.
The room 4 incidents happened at 3am and 4.57am, and the room 2 incidents happened either side of 7am. Letby accepts this was the case.
The court is shown a night shift staffing rota at the end of the night, in which Child J was in room 2.
Letby is asked if she has any memory of the earlier pair of incidents. She says she does not have a recollection.
She says from her memory, Child J had a seizure and was moved to room 2. She says she could be mistaken in her memory.

The court is shown an apnoea/brady/fit chart for Child J on November 27, recording events for Child J at 4.40am and 5.03am, recorded by nurse Nicola Dennison, in nursery 4.
The desaturations are recorded by Dr Kaliyilil Verghese.
Letby recalled when she was called in to room 4, Child J was 'fitting', not desaturating.
Letby accepts that by 6.28am, Child J had been moved to room 2, as a text message written by her to a colleague had said that was the case.

The court is then shown messages Letby sent to her colleague early in the morning.
Colleague [6.24am]: Good night? X
Letby [6.28am]: No [Child J] in 2 screened had profound de sats and just got 32-week twins born at home one with cleft lip and only 5 staff! X
The prosecution alleges this was evidence Letby was in nursery two with Child J, while her colleagues concentrated on the twins.
"I can't recall where I was when I sent that message," Letby says.
​ Chester Standard:
Letby says she cannot recall where she was when she sent the 6.28am message, whether she was in room 2 or not.
The message added: 'only 5 staff!'
Mr Johnson: "So it was all hands to the pump then?" as twins had been admitted to room 1 as an emergency.
LL: "Yes."
Mr Johnson says all staff would have been concentrated in room 1.
LL "Not all, but most, yes."
NJ: "You were not involved in that, were you?"
LL: "Not from memory, no."
Mr Johnson says the message sent at 6.31am would have meant Letby would not have been in room 1. Letby agrees.
Letby says Mary Griffiths would not have been in room 1 as she was not an intensive treatment unit-trained nurse. She denies she would have been the last nurse for room 2.
Letby accepts, from looking at the neonatal schedule, she would have been in room 2 when the emergency twins were admitted to room 1.
NJ: "There would have been a lot of distractions...wouldn't there?"
LL: "I don't know what you're implying."
NJ: "The medical staff would have their attention focused on the twins, and any help that could be spared would have gone on the twins.
NJ: "Do you accept that a lot of help was needed?"
LL: "It would be normal practice to get in the consultant when we only had the registrar, yes."
Dr John Gibbs arrives at 6.34am, earlier than normal for his shift, to assist.

The last message Letby sent to her colleague was 6.49am. The colleague sent three messages which were not replied to in the following minutes.
NJ: "That's because you were in nursery room 2, sabotaging [Child J], weren't you?"
LL: "No, I wasn't."
Letby accepts that, on the neonatal schedule, she is not recorded doing anything in the half hour prior to Child J's collapse at 6.56am.
Mr Johnson refers to Dr John Gibbs's notes of 'sudden desats (to unrecordable levels) at 6.56 and at 7.24 and bradycardia. Both associated with clenching of hands, stiff limbs, and on second occasion, eyes deviated to left.'
NJ: "This was your doing?"
LL: "No, it wasn't."
Letby accepts it was an emergency situation and Dr Gibbs had to be called away from room 1 to Child J in room 2.
NJ: "You took your opportunity, when all the resources at the NNU were concentrated on the twins who had been admitted as an emergency."
LL: "No."
Letby accepts evidence had been heard saying there was no known cause for Child J's deterioration.
Letby had care of Child J the following night, which the court is shown, from Letby's notes for that night, 'nothing happened'.

The following night, nothing happened to Child J - while Letby has tried to claim this is evidence she didn't hurt her (because why would she hurt her on one shift and not another), the prosecution points out that the following night Child J's parents were present on the unit.

Child K

Chester Standard
Mr Johnson moves on to the case of Child K, born on February 17, 2016.
Letby said, in her defence statement, she did not recall the events of February 17, and did not recall saying to Dr Ravi Jayaram that Child K had just started deteriorating.
She said she had done nothing to interfere with Child K's tube or the alarm.
She added the Countess neonatal unit was not capable, given its staffing levels, of looking after a baby of Child K's gestational age.
Letby tells the court she has no memory of such a conversation with Dr Jayaram. She says it is "difficult" to dispute Dr Jayaram's recollection of the event as she had no memory of it.
She denies she has changed her version of events since starting to give evidence.

Letby is asked if she understands the reason why Child K was born at the Countess.
LL: "Yes."
Mr Johnson tells the court it was deemed 'too risky' to transfer Child K and her mother to another hospital at that stage, and that was why Child K was born at the Countess.
LL: "I don't know why more effort was not made to find a bed for her [elsewhere]."
NJ: "You have persistently given the impression that the Countess has taken on babies it [is not able to look after and that is why they collapse]."
LL: "Yes."
NJ: "Is that the reason you said to the jury you didn't understand why [Child K] was born at the Countess?"
LL: "I don't understand why she was born at the Countess."
NJ: "Is it to bolster your defence?"
LL: "No."
LL: "I understand why she was born there but I don't necessarily agree [with the decision to have her born there]."

Letby says she does not recall the latter two desaturations for Child K, and does not accept Dr Jayaram's evidence in the first desaturation.
Mr Johnson says he will deal with these in a different order than chronologically; he will cross-examine on the second desaturation first.
Letby says she does not know what happened to Child K, so does not cite staffing levels as a contributory factor in Child K's desaturations.
She says she feels "potentially" the ET Tubes were not secured for Child K.

The second desaturation occurred at 6.10-6.15am on February 17, 2016.
The court hears a note on Child K's birth and assessment was typed up by Letby on a computer from 6.04am-6.10am. The note would have been taken from paper charts taken by the cotside.
NJ: "You were at [Child K's] cotside a minute or two before she desaturated, didn't you?"
Letby says she would have got the notes from the cotside "at some point" prior to her typing them up.

Mr Johnson then asks about the admission form Letby filled out. She says she got these from the cot side and took them to the computer.
"I think I know where you are going, we will dance the dance if you want to," Mr Johnson says.
Letby's defense barrister objects to this, saying comments like this are "belittling". The judge agrees and asks Mr Johnson to refrain from such remarks in future.
Letby is accused of moving Child K's tube, causing her to collapse.
"You moved Child K's tube when you took those notes back to her cot side," Mr Johnson asks.
"No I did not," says Letby.
Court is now adjourned for the day. The trial will resume at 10.30am on Monday

"I'm not nervous." Replied Joseph the human, sat with his arms resting on his knees.
The pair were sat in a public space on board a space station. To Joseph, who only a scant few weeks ago had just assumed that humanity was alone in the universe, the massive upheaval of the past few weeks had left him somewhat numb to the fact that an unknown sea of stars gently floated on by far above his head, while he sat on an artifical hill covered it what felt like real grass, next to an alien.
The pair were away from the crowds, choosing to sit on a hill overlooking the park and having a great view of the pleasure district.
Joseph had assumed something seedy from the name, but it was filled with families, parks, entertainment and confectionery stands.
The human's companion was one of two new friends that he had made. A canid, Basch, by virtue of his appearance, reminded Joseph of home. Wherever that was now. He looked like a werewolf, but with enough small differences that to say it was a one to one ratio to what he knew, would be false.
A mane that would have suited a lion or rock icon. Whiskers or spines extended from joins and down the centre of his back. A sea of small differences. Just... not quite a werewolf. If he squinted, then yeah, a 'space werewolf', maybe.
"Ah, I'm wrong then. I'm losing my touch..." Replied Basch, referring to Joseph's denial that his anxiety was building.
There was no danger, no need to be worried.
Yet...
That was when the canid attacked. Canids were larger than humans and Basch was a perfect specimen of a healthy male canid. Muscles rippled under a healthy shiny coat of fur. He used his greater mass to roll over Joseph sideways and dragged him into a barrel roll of sorts.
It all happened in mere moments, but the next instant Joseph was on his back, the grass tickling his ears while a giant wolf-like creature grinned down at him. Two massive clawed hands were either side of his head. The knees of the alien were either side of his legs while it's lower legs were crossed over and pinning Joseph's ankles down.
"What are you doing?" The young grinning man asked with laughter before trying to get up. He put an elbow beneath him and tried to push the alien away, but it was no different from trying to push a building.
"Oh no, I'm not being told I'm losing my touch, I have to be certain!" Exclaimed Basch as a hand snatched one of the human's wrists and pinned it. Putting his weight on the sides of his hands while holding the arm still, his other arm reached for the second wrist of the human which was just as quickly pinned down.
Joseph attempted to wriggle free, but found he was quite firmly held in place even when he bucked and yanked.
"I will not be shamed!" Grinned the alien.
"I didn't shame-hey! What are you-?! Ack!"
The canid had leaned down and pushed his snout and muzzle into the crease of Joseph's neck where it met the shoulder. A cold wet and leathery nose pressed into the exposed skin and breathed in deeply before breathing in and out in rapid successions, tickling the human.
Joseph reacted by flinching and trying to press his cheek into his shoulder, but the canid's head was in the way, snuffling and wriggling about.
"Mm, smells like nerves to me. What about... this side?!" The male said before retreating his head only to repeat his actions in the otherside. The human however was squirming and laughing as his sensitive areas were assaulted and tickled. He threatened the canid several times up to and including outright murder. The canid offered no mercy.
And as suddenly as the assault had started, it ended. Joseph was panting deeply, his face flushed red as he glared up at the canid who wore a dopey grin, tongue hanging out.
The canid released the human's hands and lowered himself onto his elbows. The canids body completely covered the human's lower half, pinning the legs and hips beneath him. The canid rested his head against the humans ribcage, while his hands were slipped beneath Joseph's shirt and rested against the bare skin directly. Basch could hear and feel the human's heart beating rapidly. He had noticed before that human's had a much faster heart rate than the other species, and only one heart at that.
The canid, on learning about their biology and hearing the small organ working so hard, developed a very serious sense of protection over it. It felt... fragile, like he needed to close his hands protectively over it and hold it against his own chest.
Especially Joseph's. It wasn't so much that he needed protecting, Basch had been a guard before. He didnt feel protective of the human, it was more that... he didn't want any harm to come to Joseph in the first place.
"So... am I wrong, or do I need to track down more evidence?" The canids voice rumbled and vibrated Joseph's entire body as he spoke.
"I can't smell what you can, for all I know you're just making things up!" Joseph complained, diverting the conversation.
"Being smell blind is no excuse... tell me... maybe I can make it better?"
"You..." the human sighed, his head thumping back down, seemingly defeated, but still not wanting to talk about it. Basch remained where he was, only moving his fingers, brushing his thumbs over the humans sides and stomach.
"It feels like something bad is going to happen."
"Something bad? Like what?"
"I dunno'... its stupid."
A growl of warning from the canid.
"It's not stupid. You're worried that you're in danger?"
"It's like... what happened the other week?" He referred back to the end of Earth.
"Every time we thought we were out of danger, something else went wrong. Like... its been two weeks since I got here... I'm waiting for the next thing to go wrong."
Basch understood this. Combat was a canid's preferred environment. There's a bad guy, kill the bad guy. Easy. But even for a canid, if the fighting is too hard or goes on for too long, it begins to weigh heavily on any canid. They become nervous, they react violently to surprises and expect the worst in perfectly calm situations.
Joseph felt Basch sigh before a flat, wet and broad tongue lapped at the underside of his chin. It immediately shattered the serious mood that was building in Joseph's head as he feigned repulsion, despite him immediately feeling better, if only a little bit.
"Aww gross! Canid breath!" He joked laughing.
As Vine came back to the other two, holding three odd treats in his hands, he came back to the canid ravishing the human. The furless alien was attempting to prevent the canid from licking his face and was failing miserably. The canid would duck in, wipe his broad tongue across the humans face, then use the moment of being blinded to attack the opposite side.
As Vine stood there, there was a moment that the human grabbed the canid's head with both hands and attempted to hold it away. The humans arm's were tense, his tendons sticking up and out as he put all his strength into holding the canids skull away. The canid merely leaned forward and slowly approached with a wicked grin before he was in range and licked the humans face once more before stopping and turning to the felinoid, leaning back exposing the panting human with his chest covering half ridden up to his arm pits.
"Welcome back!" Basch said with a wide smile.
"What is going on here?" Asked Vine, crooking an eye ridge.
"Nothing!" The canid lied pathetically.
The felinoid simply made a 'mm' noise as Joseph wiped his face free of drool with the length of his arms, still panting.
"If we're experimenting, firstly I want to be there to, at the very least, watch and secondly, whilst exciting, perhaps not in public?"
The canid merely leered at the felinoid, tongue dangling from its maw. Canids were not a partner Vine had ever considered before, but it was turning out to be an untapped goldmine of boundless energy of a confident partner that was vigously willing to serve.
The human on the other hand was a bundle of anxious nerves. While Vine could have manipulated him with ease, the felinoid was enjoying the long playful journey of Joseph coming to terms with the adventures and pleasures that Vine and Basch were offering without expectations. The two of them were, mostly, allowing the human to explore at his own pace.
That said if Basch was going to keep using every time Vine looked away to be flirting with the human, Vine was going to need to up his own game. He underestimated the tactical acumen of the solider.
"What you got there?"
"'You Creams', apparently a human delicacy."
Joseph looked up.
"Oh, Ice Creams?" Seeing the wafer cone and the coloured mound on top.
"I think they are frozen, but they were quite adamant they're called 'You Creams'"
Joseph frowned before a realisation dawned on him. He did a sit-up with the canid still pinning his legs and fished his translator out of his ear.
The canid did the same and the felinoid, after handing the cones out, matched.
"I like Ice Cream."
The aliens responded, but it was merely yowls and growls, the canid's words seemingly more sub-vocal then actual words, rattling Joseph's bsck teeth. The trio replaced the ear buds.
"I, meaning me, and Ice sound similar in some of our languages. They weren't saying You, they were saying Ice."
"Oh." Said Vine, looking at the slowly melting confection. "Well good luck then because they've got a sign and everything." He said with a shrug before biting into the treat with gutso.
Moments later Vine flinched and screwed his eyes up as he learnt what a brain freeze was.

Hi everyone, i’m having my 3A TP test on 5 June at SSDC in the 1st session. I’m a little bit nervous of what to expect as this is my first ever TP. I have done my lessons with a Private Driving Instructor, and so far i do feel confident for main road but a little scared for circuit although I’ve had multiple practices.
Okay so, there are a few things I would like to clarify as I don’t believe that my PDI has gone through all the small details like blindspots and use of handbrakes well enough, from what I heard from my friends who did via school. Here are the list of things i’m a bit confused about:
  1. Is it necessary to engage handbrake when doing parking and then raise your hand to let the TP know you’re done?
  2. Is there such a thing called left-side blindspots? My PDI told me to check blindspots on the right side but never really said much about the left side
  3. My PDI told me to keep left most of the time (unless I have to change lanes to make a right turn or U-turn), and not to unnecessarily overtake vehicles. However from my friends, I heard points could be accumulated for always staying in the left lane?
  4. Regarding the mirrors, my PDI told me i can leave the mirrors as it is until the end of the circuit test where I need to adjust back the mirrors to original position. However, I heard from my friends that I can only adjust the mirror when I am about to park, then must adjust back the mirror when I am leaving the parking lot.
  5. Am I allowed to adjust the mirror for S and J course?
  6. For the pole-reaction station thingy, I should put to park after going up the small kerb and stopping before the pole, wait for the TP to come out then go in front and put to park again for the TP to come in right? then after the TP comes in the car I do the reverse pole thing then drive forward to the next stations. This is the order that my PDI told which I would like to confirm for SSDC.
  7. For vertical parking, it is important for the car to align to the middle line (just nice beside the middle line right). And for parallel it should be in the middle of the left side curb and the middle bold line on the right.
  8. I was never told about the emergency jam break; may I know what is usually the procedure for this?
  9. Then usually when I exit the circuit to go main road, at SSDC gates there will be workers dashing across the gate; so it’s necessary to stop to check if anyone is crossing then move in front a bit and stop at the stop line right?
  10. Is there any other important tips I should follow to have a smooth clearance for my TP test?

Morning, Two days before Shel
Captain Setar suppressed a smile as she watched the Ops door close. “Well, that was interesting…Ce’lani is a little cranky.” The last vestiges of sleep clung to her as she settled down into the command chair. She felt worn out, but it was the cusp of dawn, and Pod Seven had only just turned over control. “Report on station?”
“The perimeter’s secure,” Jelki replied crisply, pulling up the map of the campus on the main screen. “Pod One is on station and reports twelve by twelve. Sgt Ma’reis is already complaining about janitor duty.”
“Ah, first pod problems.” Setar shook her head, rubbing her eyes and blowing gently on her mug of tea. “What about the objective?”
“The objective’s secure,” Re’lan piped up, already sounding chipper. The woman could have been priestess of Jrafell. Her unwavering cheeriness would have been a character fault if she weren’t so devoted. As it was, it was a damned penance for everyone else at this time of day.
Jelke finished running the obligatory shift change checks and stretched. Things wouldn't get interesting until breakfast, but watching the perimeter was a given. It didn't keep the curiosity out of her voice, as she cocked her head and glanced over. “What was interesting with Captain Ton’is, Ma’am?”
“Mm! Well… it appears she’s expecting a call from Professor Warrick today,” Setar drawled out, taking a moment to savor their reaction. “She felt a need to remind me she’s devoted to Hele, and that if Be’ona or I let her sleep through the call, she’s going to ‘fuck us up the ass with a lasrifle and pull the trigger’.”
Re’lan was probably blushing like a cadet, but Jelke shook her head ruefully. “I expect there's a ‘but’ in there somewhere, Captain?”
“Well, yeah, she said that’s where the rifle would go…” Setar sniggered before taking a long sip from her tea, and slid a bit lower in the command couch. Her eyes wandered to the traffic on the board. “She also made it clear what’ll happen if anybody listens in.”
Thoughtful silence descended. Setar almost counted to twelve before-
“We’re going to anyway, right Captain?” Jelke asked nonchalantly. “You know, for security’s sake?”
“Sergeant, that would be a base infringement of Captain Ton’is’ privacy, which is in fucking short supply for everyone in this bunker.” She rubbed her chin thoughtfully, watching the steam rise from her mug. “Deeps right we are.”

Lady Wicama regarded her guest with interest as their autocab plied its way about the outskirts of Prelitauri. While she’d been free and cheerfully able to accommodate Khelira’s request, Monsignor Santino Barcio, or Friar Barcio, as he preferred, was not at all what she’d been expecting. She supposed it was a matter of exposure…
The Palace had never quite been the same since Princess Yn’dara’s wedding. Yn’dara was one of those odd Royals who, though well-regarded, was seldom in the public eye. A perennial favorite of the Empress, indulging her unexplained absences passed as a matter of course for the Court. Widely known to be estranged from her mother, Princess Arduina, no one enquired either deeply or often, so when she suddenly resurfaced, her return would have equally passed without comment… if not for the wedding.
Yn’dara had shocked the entire Nobility.
While it was common for any woman to marry into an established family and become a kho, the wedding should have been singular for a Princess. Princesses didn’t marry into families, Princesses formed them. And while Yn’dara technically had done so, she’d taken on four unmarried women at the same time as her husband, who was a Human! Favorite or no, the wags in the court were agog that the Empress accepted Adam so readily! The Empress, however, had been adamant; Yn’dara and her family had her blessings, and were to be left alone.
However, time had proven to be on Yn’dara’s side as well as the Empress.
After a wedding seen across the galaxy, Yn’dara’s family settled into a life of public duty. They spent long trips away from Shil, and while quietly dismissed as ‘pleasure excursions’, her trips often showed the throne to the outer provinces. Although her public engagements were few, she’d become a vocal advocate of the Empress’ reforms against graft and corruption, and, gradually, the jealous mutters about scandalous excess and Human debauchery faded away. Her marriage remained an unusual footnote, but time had demonstrated the value of Yn’dara and her wives to the throne.
Then there was Prince Adam.
Rumor held the Prince had made a favorable impression on the Empress years before, at an event hosted by Yn’dara’s mother. While details had never been forthcoming, a more significant story about Adam wafted briefly through the ranks of the Golden Glaives.
Both stories had been effectively silenced, but Wicama knew who to talk to, and being Khelira’s guardian carried a certain clout all its own. Though that influence waxed and waned over the years, raising Khelira required being aware of events that could shape her future, and she’d proven herself to be discreet. Over time, doors had opened and words had flowed.
Time had been on Prince Adam’s side, as well.
As the years passed, she’d had an exposure to Prince Adam that few of the court and none of the public enjoyed. She’d been wary at first, but he’d been a good friend and mentor to Princess Khelandri before she joined the Marines, and however infrequent his presence, he always displayed a keen mind, a loving heart, and a steadfast duty to his wives. Privately, he absolutely doted on young Khelira and possessed a loyalty to the Empress that you could bend battlesteel around. The two got along famously - after all, he was a veteran.
Not Navy, mind you, but you couldn’t have everything.
And so, as Humanity began making forays upon the galactic stage, her first impression of the species had been favorable. She’d witnessed Adam mature into his role with the court, and while the issue of children remained unspoken, that faded as well. At the time, Yn’dara had been sixth in the line of succession. A year after the wedding, Kamaud’re became an adult, followed a year later by Khelandri, and the matter became largely moot.
As for a second impression on Humans, Khelira had provided enthusiastic reports about Thomas Warrick. While the Princess thrived at the Academy, Warrick seemed to be something special.
The absence of a father in her life had been a void that no woman could properly fill, but she’d done her best. Although she’d entertained a few qualms, as the months passed by, Warrick remained a positive influence. Khelira’s messages were infrequent by necessity, but she’d written about her distress over Warrick’s family and clearly been moved. Prince Adam carried his own scars, but what veteran didn’t? He hid them carefully around Khelli, and if Warrick had chosen not to, he’d provided a useful sense of perspective, instead. It was time for Khelira to grow up, and that meant facing the grist of differing opinions and ugly realities. That was what education was actually for, and Warrick seemed to be doing admirably well as a grindstone.
All of that was before the library incident, which settled her opinion once and for all. While erratic, irreverent, and capable of violence, Humans clearly could be a positive influence when channeled in the right direction. Yn’dara had shown what a good Shil’vati woman was capable of with Prince Adam, and Lady Pel’avon was following suit.
And at least the wags at the Palace wouldn’t speak of Yn’dara’s state wedding again. As a subject for spectacle, Miv’eire Pel’avon’s had put it to shame.
Still, it was good to see Warrick married. While Professor Ha’meres scandalous exploits had faded from the public eye, older wo… more mature women didn’t forget such things. The man had been a daring adventurer - and an inveterate gadabout - and an unmarried man around that many young women was too tempting for some girls. A wife or two… preferably more… resolved such idle fancies. If the Pel’avon ceremony had been somewhat… questionable in taste, compared to Adam’s, it remained legally binding. Warrick was willing to settle down, and by all reports his wife had a proper sense of decorum.
Human men seemed to be a trial from the Goddess, but hopefully she and her kho-wife could sort him with time, love, and kindness.
While exposure to only two Humans was not what she’d call a comprehensive sample, in both cases her impressions had been quite positive. And so, when Khelli asked her to escort a Human Priest about the city, she’d been entirely willing.
Thus far, it had been an enjoyable morning. While there had been occasional missteps, their conversation had been delightful as they traveled from property to property. Even so, she hadn’t expected to meet such a kindred spirit.
Admittedly she’d stammered a bit when he mentioned eating the flesh and drinking the blood of his redeemer. On the other hand, she compared it to the first time she’d bled into the ocean, mingling salt in her blood with the seas. He’d turned shockingly pale, so she changed the subject. It was a purely symbolic act to Drepna - just a cut on the thumb, for goddess sake...
She’d taken extra care afterwards. Barcio could be clearly a sensitive male, but diplomacy was part of her work. Even calling her role ‘work’ was deceptive. She’d raised Khelira in every way an Empress could not.
It was easy for other women to appreciate the prestige of her position, but few understood the depth of it - or the satisfaction.
During her career in the Navy, her flotilla had provided direct support for the Empress, and they’d come to work closely over three tours. After Khelira’s birth years later, the invitation came from the Royal Household to act as her guardian, and she’d never looked back. Competition had been fierce for the prestigious position, but applying had been the best move of her life.
Empress Kamilesh loved all her children and had spent as much time with each of them as she could, but her work was all-consuming, and after her husband’s act of… Well, the Empress had been there, but she’d born her pain privately. She had lost herself in her work for many years before recovering a semblance of her former self, and her absence had taken a toll on her children. Kamaud’re had taken it the worst. Khelandri had bounced back, while everyone doted on Lu’ral. Barely more than an infant, Khelira had been far too young to remember. Wicama had been there through all of it.
It was a good life, and the princess was a delightful girl. For Wicama, the absence of a man in her life was something she’d felt now and then, but she invested her life in Khelira. The Empress treated her as a member of the family in all but name… and in a very real sense, the child you raised was your child.
Looking back, some women might insinuate she’d given up her personal life to raise another woman’s daughter. They couldn’t have been more wrong.
She had her calling - just as Friar Barcio had his.
Yes, he was a priest, and his religious strictures were very unusual. A male priest in any of the Shil’vati faiths would never be placed under such restraints, and for a man to go unmarried was noteworthy…
But she understood having a calling. Oh yes, she understood that as few others could.
After discussing his needs, they’d set out to examine three properties around Prelitauri. The Friar’s individual requirements were deceptively difficult when taken as a whole. A complex coupling a generous auditorium, ample administrative space, and he clearly needed substantial grounds to properly convey a sense of aura. Such accommodations were seldom on the market, and since he expected his colleagues to arrive in weeks, his need was immediate.
Thankfully, urban renewal moved in waves. The tides of such fashions meant Prelitauri was once again an up-and-coming area. While difficult to find, three older structures had the potential to be suitable, and so it was that she’d enjoyed learning about her guest as they explored the tiny district.
The Monsignor spoke four other Earth languages fluently. He tended to break into his native tongue and hadn’t mastered contractions yet, but his Vatikre was passable and he listened carefully, seldom needing to ask about a word. After limiting her contractions when she spoke, their conversation flowed easily.
Barcio had shown little enthusiasm for the first two properties, but their conversation regarding other matters never waned. She expanded on her devotion to Drepna, Shil and the roles of each goddess while asking careful questions of his faith. His own inquiries proved thoughtful, and he was as avid in politely asking after her beliefs as explaining his faith.
After their second hour together, she’d taken the liberty of calling Prelate Hi’meta Merlamiss. As a priestess of Drepna’s second circle, Merlamiss had proven a valuable contact over the years. Well connected, she enjoyed a good relationship with many other prelates of the Divine Halls; she also got on well with Xinfess, the Rakiri’s Speaker of the Dark Mother on Shil. A meeting with Barcio would readily open doors for his group that might otherwise prove difficult to attain, and while Barcio’s accent strained now and then, it was clear the Monsignor and the Prelate shared a questionably low sense of humor.
Given a chance, they’d probably get on famously.
Certainly, that would be a blessing. Their hunt for a suitable facility had not gone nearly so well, and while Barcio had been conciliatory toward the first two facilities, she could tell he wasn’t taken with either. The last property wasn’t high in her expectations, so she found herself casting her head to the side when it swept into view and he clasped his hands in excitement.
”*È bella!* This is beautiful,” he exclaimed. “It reminds me a bit of my childhood home in Sacile!”
She looked out at the complex with its low gabled roofs, as their cab wound up from the entrance. Beside the drive, a small river meandered through the campus past the main buildings. She tapped the console to slow their ride and considered the place in a new light. “I’m… well, a bit surprised to be honest, Friar.”
“Please! We have been traveling for hours now, and I am not holding a service.” The Friar spared her a warm smile, before gazing back at the premises. “I would take it as a great kindness if you would call me Santino.”
“Very well - on the condition you call me Wicama.” It had been some time since anyone called her by anything but title or rank, and the informality was pleasant. Still, as their autocab closed on the end of the lane, she let such thoughts go and considered the location properly.
The buildings were low, sensible cubes, but that was largely an end to it. The architect had made some unusual choices in Helkam motifs that strained understanding. A long colonnade bordered the river, and that seemed nice enough, but the buildings! Forgoing purple was one thing, but they were beige! With unusual elements and the repressively bland color scheme, it was small wonder the clerk handling the property confessed that the space had lain vacant. Its original owners went into foreclosure. The exotic design had proven unable to attract interest, laying dormant ever since.
Barcio… Santino… seemed delighted, however, and she pulled up the specifications on her omni-pad. “This site has two smaller auditoriums besides the main one, while the central building has four floors. One is underground, but all the floors face an interior atrium.”
As the cab gently halted in the car park, she climbed out to hold the door but Santino had already scrambled out and was examining the gardens with evident interest. Tall stands of parago trees were losing the last of their fronds for the year, but she had to admit the grounds were substantial. Yesterday’s storm had left the morning air cold and crisp, lending the gardens an appealing aspect. Untended since the last owners, much could be done with them.
She had given up trying to escort the Friar anywhere after their first two stops, and now they fell into an easy pace side by side as they strolled toward the main building. She turned back to the property itself. “So, this reminds you of your home?”
It wasn’t exactly Helkam architecture - domes weren’t covering every possible surface - but the builder had clearly been nodding in that direction. A promenade wound to the entry, supporting white chevrons that arced into the sky. The bright morning sky shone through clever cutouts, making the unusual design at least look light, rather than oppressive and unappealing. With a decent renovation, the facility had possibilities, and the price was comparatively low.
“*Si!* Oh, not so much like home, but there is the sense of it. I was born near the sea, and this feels… similar.” He gave her a depreciating smile before rolling his eyes. “It may not please everyone who is coming, but ‘everyone’ is not here, so I am allowed some indulgence! Better to have something waiting than nothing at all. I confess, some of my colleagues thought we’d only manage when the bridge to Messina is finished.”
“You should not have been sent ahead alone! Surely your colleagues were not that worried about a poor reception,” she tutted. Priest or no, there were decencies about a man traveling alone to be observed. “You shouldn't need a bridge to find a place for your mission. I don’t know where Messina is, but I’m certain Prelate Marlemis wouldn’t stand for it!”
“Tch! Excuse my poor efforts! The older I get, the more I remember things like yesterday. Unfortunately, the yesterdays I remember so well were thirty years ago!” Barcio smiled wryly up at her as they walked. “The ‘bridge to Messina’ used to be a saying… People dreamed of building a bridge to Sicily, and it became something that never happened. My English friends would instead say ‘when hell freezes over’. *Un'espressione volgare*, but very much to the point.”
“Ah… I’m sure we can manage something, and this could be made presentable. Maybe change the beige to a pale violet?” she offered helpfully as she made it to the door first, holding it open. “The aura inside isn’t so bad.”
“You’ve said that several times, but I do not know what you mean?” He paused in looking around the entry, which had an open foyer exposing the two floors above and led out to the atrium beyond. “What is ‘aura’? I do not think I know the word as you mean it.”
“Aura is… Hmm…” Wicama paused thoughtfully and gestured at the atrium. The interior was in better shape than the grounds, and the architect had done something clever. Not yet noon, a bevel along the top edge filled the space with sunlight. “Have you ever walked along a beach and wanted to save a shell? When you are there, that is aura… When you take the shell home and think of the beach, that is aura, but… less focused. Diminished. You sense the beach because of the shell, but you are not at the beach. Places can have aura, but it is more than character. If you move through a place and find yourself experiencing it? That is aura.”
“Mhm! *lodevole!*“I like this idea very much. It would be right at home in the Vatican. Not everyone understands a space can move the spirit, or lend power to a message.” He nodded thoughtfully as he cast his eye about the open space. “With the right advice, perhaps we can lead others to these halls.”
“Perhaps. If you tour the Palace, I hope you’ll allow me to show you about? A lot of the real gems are hidden from the public.” She watched as he wandered toward the double-helixed stairways bordering the room. Those were definitely Helkam; walking up one side without meeting someone coming down the other was an interesting experience… once. After that, they could be an absolute nuisance. Spotting the elevators, she called him back. “The nice thing is this place is inexpensive! That will pad out your funds for a good remodel.”
Wicama quietly thanked the Goddesses that the builder’s had the good sense to install normal Shil’vati-style elevators. The sides were open, granting a wide view out over the atrium. The grounds were terraced to create a small park; that could make the underground space bearable, and the plans made them seem spacious enough. Not to everyone’s taste, but pretty. “I feel bad for asking, but can you afford the building? If the price of the first two bothered you, we can find others.”
“I would not hear of it! Thank you for your concern, but we are economical with our funds, and were sent with a generous sum. This is an important venture to everyone involved,” Barcio clasped a hand over his chest, as he shook his head. “I can not thank you enough for your help! You have surely spared me weeks, and I might not have found something half so suitable. As it is, the grounds are enough to gain me converts. Father Roscio and Pastor Weber will surely plant a vineyard before the inside is half done!”
“It’s not a problem. I have plenty of time,” she replied, dismissing the matter as inconsequential. “I work at the Palace, but with the Court away and my daughter at school, I’m a bit at loose ends just now. At the very least, I insist on helping you through the paperwork. I wouldn’t put it past some realty clerks to try and overcharge you… Someone from outside Shil, that is. I’ll ensure they stick to the listing.”
“To someone not from Shil… or someone who is not Shil’vati, perhaps?” His head canted slightly to one side, but he smiled as he said it. “*Certamente!* I would not dream of preventing you, though Rabbi Kleinbaum will be bitterly disappointed she has nothing to moan about.”
“I hope you won't take this badly, as I’ve only met one Human.” Wicama gave him a smile. She was long past girlish uncertainty, and the Navy had taught her a generous measure of professional poise to go with her skills as a markswoman. “You aren’t what I expected.”
“You know the professore, then?” He sucked in a breath and pursed his lips. “I am still deciding what sort of man he is.”
“No, actually, I know another Human but I’ve not… I have not… met Professor Warrick.”
“So. You mean that I am not *un barbaro*? I am here to make sure that we are seen as something more than savage warriors, *capisci*?” He studied her expectantly. “While the Imperium is doing good work on Earth, some still live in want. The Imperium provides enough for all to survive, but not all live in plenty. We need to present ourselves well.”
”That seems like a very secular outlook.” She offered, as they rode up to the third floor. Barcio asked for an explanation of the word, and by the time they’d made their way through the first offices he had the idea.
“My church has not always troubled itself with such things, but our holy father is greatly concerned with such inequalities. He takes it upon himself to address such matters with the Governess, when their time allows.”
“Your church has a good relationship with her?”
“È straordinario! The Governess adores our food, and while she was adamant about taking quarters in the Vatican, she has taken pains not to disturb us.” He shrugged dismissively. “*Cosa sai fare?* It seemed a small price, and we have endured far worse.”
“I used to hear terrible stories about red zones on Earth, though the Humans I’ve met don't seem the sort. It is good that your… pulp?” She tried the word and was rewarded with kind laughter and a gentle correction. “It is good that your pope concerns himself with the full welfare of the people and works with your governess. Our prelates share the same concerns.”
“I thought the Empress was the head of your church? Now, I find you have many…” he groped for a word, frowning, and gave up. “*Questo accento è una prova di fede!* ‘Denominations’ is not the right word, but she is the one revered, yes?”
“Of course! The Empress has to show all of our virtues and none of our faults, but that’s part of her role. To favor any divinity over the others could cause divisions. She has her personal preferences, of course, but never lets them be known.” Wicama explained carefully. “It would be in poor taste.”
“And poor politics, I think?” Santino gave her a long look. At his height it was difficult, but he managed. “This makes sense to me now, that the Imperium leaves matters of faith alone. *Una benedizione inaspettata.*”
Despite the serious topic, his fervent reply brought a smile back to her lips. “It seems your pope considers politics as well as economics.”
“People will always defend economic theories which assume that growth will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice. This has never been confirmed by the facts, and expresses a crude trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.” He said, stopping to clasp a hand over his cross. “Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting.”
“That doesn't sound like scripture.” She offered cautiously, as they made their way into a wider suite of offices on the second floor.
“*Esattamente* The words of Pope Francis, a good and blessed man who appointed me to my position. His successor, his holiness John Paul the Third, is much of the same mind.” Santino said quietly. “Our savior washed the feet of others and urged all to do the same. The hardest step is to be involved. To work together for change, as well as to pray. That is why I am here.
“*I pigri di cuore trovano sempre una scusa* Some Humans, they are yet angry with the Imperium. Now they have enough, they are bitter not to have plenty. For some there is never enough - the true poverty lies within their hearts,” Santino said a bit testily. “Our faith teaches us to find salvation in eternal life, but others? *Pigrizia!* They see it as an excuse from taking agency in themselves. Jesus washed the feet of others - he did not lay down and wait for someone to wash his!”
Wicama turned the unfamiliar metaphor over in her mind but decided she had the sense of it. “Sham teaches us that helping our families and one another is the same as helping ourselves. ‘The rising tide bares us all from the reefs’.” It was a matter of faith… but that was why it was faith in the first place. On the whole, it seemed like a mature perspective that explained the changes she’d seen in Prince Adam over the years. “You’re here to meet with others, but this seems as much about knowing yourselves.”
“*Sì, non è una brutta cosa avere umiltà davanti a Dio.* Human beings, while we are capable of the worst, we are also capable of choosing the good. Of rising up to make a new start. We are entering the galaxy.” He gestured out the window at the world beyond. “If not now… when?”
_ _ _ “So, when are you going to explain this masterpiece you four have been cooking up?” Marin asked. Sammi and Sam were barely awake but the twins had already arrived, bright-eyed and enthusiastic, and Marin cursed the resilience of youth. The room was acceptably warm, but Ayen had complained about the cold and used the excuse to slip back into bed. She was considering her options for joining him.
Somewhere, somehow, Sammi had found their rabbit pajamas again. “Sam, explain it to her? You do it better.” Sammi yawned, but Marin suspected it was an act. Once something got their attention, sleep was usually an afterthought.
“What, now?” Sam had barely stumbled into the room and blinked. Bleary-eyed and barely awake, he looked like he’d been ambushed, which was exactly the case.
“Pllllllleeeease…?” They sat back pulling the ears, giving their best Roger Rabbit impression. Luminous green eyes peered out at Sam, imploringly.
“Alright… I need coffee, but fine.” Sam trudged over to the kitchenette and poked listlessly at the instant coffee. It was getting perilously low, but Marin was sure he’d brought more on the ship. Eventually Sam gestured at the K’herbhal sisters with his mug. “So the girls want to create an artificial topological soliton. It's like a black hole, except where it isn't… It's sort of a kink in space-time.”
“Made you say kink!” Sammi grinned impishly and the girls blushed. Marin shook her head but paid attention. It felt far too early after another late night, but once everyone was up you had to hang on for whatever came next.
“So, what's that got to do with this… hole you want to use for power?” Marin raised her voice just enough to drag the conversation back on track.
“It’s more like a side effect. If it cuts the right angle, it goes into a realm of space-time we can tap for power. Think of it as an obverse of an energy drain, so it's like a white hole.”
“Let me guess.” Marin shook her head and grinned, holding up a hand to forestall the inevitable. “Except where it isn’t?”
“Ummm… pretty much.” Sam grumbled, blowing at his coffee. Marin glanced back at the twins. With Sam busy, the twins had gravitated to either side of Sammi. There was room left on the couch, and she wandered over to settle in beside one of them.
The Sams had been complaining for years about a lack of ‘focal power’ for their mass compression technologies, and while a rubber duck inside a diamond was impressive, they’d wanted to do something more - a lot more. She suspected if the twins were providing the means, then they already had something about to surface from the depths of their imaginations. Over the years she’d learned to pick a bit, rather than take their answers at straight value. “And if things don’t cut at the right angle? You remember how long it took to get rid of the Navy, when you started talking about making black holes?”
“It's not our fault they didn’t understand,” Sammi said defensively, crossing their arms and pouting at her before the rabbit ears fell over their face.
“Who didn’t understand what?” Akeimei yawned at the door. She cast a wink her way before wrapping her arms around Sam and gave him a quick hug. “What did I miss?”
“Umm… a parallel universe, if the math is right,” Sam mumbled from the depths of his coffee cup.
“What? Like identical versions of us?” Marin watched Akimei’s nose wrinkled at the smell before she slipped away from Sam. Slipped down beside her, they rubbed shoulders a moment. “Tell me, is there one where I get more sleep?”
“More or less identical… though it's not like you need to go into a parallel universe for that sort of thing. There’s already a ‘you’ out there somewhere right now, to say nothing of past and future ‘you’.” Sam scratched his cheek idly for a moment “It's just the math. The universe is so vast that there are exact physical cosmic twins of us out there somewhere, not to mention even more almost-twins.”
“Sam’s right!” Sammi perked up excitedly, bouncing on the sofa. “Then there are quantum cosmic twins - which gets weird because particles exist in multiple states and you’d sort of overlap… but the easiest one is probably just another us elsewhere in the universe right now! That's sort of the point where things are since the universe is bigger than you can imagine!”
“So exactly the same… or almost.” One of the twins giggled. “Just like us!”
“Pretty much,” Sam nodded, slowly emerging from the depths of his coffee. “Another you out there on another Shil, or another me on a whole Earth, even - just a little bit different.”
“What? Like an Earth that never met the Imperium?” Marin canted her head, tossing out the obvious. It was hard to remember her life before, and she didn’t want to contemplate the alternative.
“Oh, I don't like that idea.” One of the twins stuck out her lip. “We want to come to Earth!”
“Yeah,” her sister nodded, though she suddenly looked glum. “I don’t know if Professor Warrick would mind though. He’d be with his wife and daughter, there.”
“Oh…” her sister's face crumpled. “I didn’t think of it that way.”
“Well, don’t…” Sammi hugged them both a moment, though they held the first twin a bit tighter. “The point is, somewhere he’s with them right now!”
“Wow, I guess so.” she brightened. “Just imagine! A whole Earth that never met the Shil’vati!”
“I wouldn’t worry, sis.” her twin nodded. “I think Professor Warrick is pretty happy right now.”

“I am not happy about this!” Tom glared at his omni-pad before tossing it down in frustration.
Miv looked up at her husband.
“It’s an honor!” She tucked her chin in and gave him a long, considered look, “What is it that’s bothering you - really? It wasn't Monsignor Barcio. Are you certain this isn't the same sort of thing?”
“Yes, I’m sure!” he growled, looking away like a guilty child. “Alright, maybe… but this uniform is the silliest thing I’ve ever seen. I’ll look like a mushroom, and the hat only makes it worse!" Tom grimaced at the omni-pad accusingly, "They won’t take ‘no’ for an answer, so now I’m on the rolls as a Warden Captain - whatever that is - and this ceremony is ridiculous!”
“The ceremony is traditional. Very symbolic... Besides, they don't make wardens out of anyone below the rank of captain - I looked it up. You were one before, so it's appropriate to make you one instead of a Warden Major or Warden Colonel.” She smiled at him serenely. “Surely, it can’t be the worst thing you’ve ever done.”
He turned to wag a finger her way. “I’ll take that bet!”
“Worse than our wedding reception…?” She crooned, teasing him. “Or maybe pre-term night? I swear by the Goddess no one will pinch your ass, except for Lea and I.”
“Fine… “ Her smile grew wider as he grumbled, but he was calming down already and there wasn't heat in it. Still, he stubbornly clung on to the point a while longer. "It’s in my top five.”
“I’m sure you’ll survive, husband. Now then, I have meetings all afternoon, so why don't you finish reviewing the menu? You’ll feel better when all this is over and you can go back to cooking, chess, or starting that eeeyiy club… You might even give Ce’lani a call or message her?” She gathered her coat and smiled demurely, though it harbored nothing innocent. “If I’m not here you’ll have perfect privacy… Just don't promise anything you wouldn't promise to me.”
“It’s iai-do…” Tom groused, but he was already picking up his omni-pad.
She blew him a kiss and made her way toward the commons. Tom would probably stew a while, but he’d make the call.
There would be time to meet with Ce’lani on the common, before she had to come home for dinner.

Tom looked over the banquet menu as if it might reach out and bite him. The words stared up at him with perfect innocence.
Appetizer: Fruit and Cheese Platter - Slices of various cheeses and fruits on a platter providing a delicate mix of sweet, tangy and creamy to invigorate the dining experience. Serve with a selection of sweet and semi-sweet wines.
Soup: Choice of Tomato or French Onion Soup - Served with a piece of baguette and cheese.
Salad: Strawberry Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing -- an assortment of greens and fruit with a balsamic grain dressing to cleanse the palate.
Entree: Cornish Pasty - This herb-infused meat and pastry dish provides a counterpoint to the tangy taste of the salad and soup. Served with a creamy buttered mashed potato (a vegetable, humanely prepared!) with chives (also a vegetable). Served with a selection of wines or ales.
Dessert: Chef’s Sorbet Surprise - A sweet treat complemented by a palate cleanser, ending the meal on a piquant note.
His last call with Bherdin had been a trial and a half. Omni-pads were the definition of ‘high fidelity’, and hearing the little Shil’vati hyperventilate for ten minutes over the plan was pointless. At least Melondi had easier going with Vedeem on her side... one way or another this was happening.
As a final consolation, he relented on wearing matching suits. Bherdin frequently bemoaned Tom’s 'lamentable' fashion sense, and he perked up at that, promising to get him some appropriate formalwear for the occasion.
Privately, he suspected his Shil’vati friend was looking for a convenient alibi if a riot started.
In fairness, it probably wasn't a bad idea.
“Too late to use it myself…” he muttered. It wasn’t quite noon, and Miv was probably right. Instead of Chess Club or starting Iai-do practice or just cooking out at Human Food, he was stuck here at home. Miv’s place was bigger, but most of his stuff was still in boxes; it left him listless and climbing the walls. If this worked, at least things could get back to normal.
…Mostly normal…
He flipped back to the picture of the Warden uniform on his omni-pad. It was bad enough, but the hat made the whole thing look like a blue toadstool in silver filigree.
He swiped the picture away like an act of revenge, but didn’t toss the pad back on the table.
…Miv was right... and I promised to call Ce’lani…
Tom centered himself, pulling up the number. The universe was always in motion and a good Taoist accepted their part in what came. That was the lesson of ‘the Vinegar Tasters’, and it held true… The painting showed three men standing around a vat of vinegar. Each has dipped his finger into the vinegar and tasted it. The expression on each man's face showed his individual reaction.
The painting was an allegory for Confucius, Buddha, and Lao-tse. Confucius wore a sour look on his face. He believed life was out of harmony with the universe. As the second figure in the painting, Buddha had a bitter expression. Like the vinegar, life was painful and filled with attachments and desires that led to suffering. The last man, Lao-tse, was smiling at the taste. To him, harmony existed naturally and could be found by anyone at any time in any experience.
He thought about his buddy Dave. The old Marine would probably shake his head and tell him to ‘embrace the suck.’ It pretty much boiled down to the same thing.
Not that he was against calling. Miv and Lea had practically taken turns urging him on and giving their views on why it was a good idea. They hadn't harped about it, but he knew which way the wind was blowing. And Ce’lani’s message had been short, sweet in the literal sense, and the sound file she’d offered up had been…
…Pretty nice, really…
If he still said no, or decided he didn't like where this was going, they’d back his choice, of course. He didn't have a doubt in his mind… But with everything else in his life turned upside down, calling Ce’lani seemed like a calm in the eye of a storm.
…It's just a phone call. Leave the chaos at the gate…
He settled down on the couch to check his messages before giving her a call. It was nearly lunch…

His dad read in a magazine that the greenest lawns need to be watered first thing and so the sprinklers were programmed to come on very early. Carl woke to their patter and to the smell of wet grass and May blossom. Looking down, a slice of dawn light crossed the middle of the bed (right over his tummy) and he watched as strands of dust drifted through it, their spiralling, jerky motions briefly visible before they vanished into the airy space of the room on either side. At some point, he drifted back to sleep.
In the houses around him, forty or so others lay in their beds, dreaming dreams which, if you could have seen them, would have blended into a heady mix of hope and fear that hovered just above the various Groves, Avenues and Closes that made up the neighbourhood. This cloud was as real, somehow, as the birdsong flitting between the trees and the mist creeping back down the streets to the sea. Within it, promises of new lives and new lovers blended with unseen foes and inexorable catastrophes. Some confronted deeply hidden parts of themselves, manifest as dead relatives, impossible landscapes, bizarre tasks and strange entities with shifting identities. Others dreamt about nothing at all, and contributed only black streaks to the otherwise iridescent, billowing cloud.
For his part, Carl dreamt he was five years younger, learning to ride his bike. His mum was running behind him holding on to the back of the seat, giving him time to find his balance while his legs built up enough momentum to keep him upright. Then he was doing it – he was riding and it was exhilarating: a blur of light and colour and rushing air. And then, all of a sudden, he wasn’t. He was awake.
“Morning, dingus,” came a voice with a hint of amusement. Carl blinked his eyes open and stared at the boy outside the window. His hair seemed to possess a life of its own, swirling and dancing in the breeze. The boy smiled with his eyes but not his mouth and nodded toward a corner of the room. Carl followed the nod and saw a cricket ball sitting against the skirting board. “Lucky your window was open. Pass it back?” Carl looked again at the boy, still half asleep. The boy began to roll his hands with mock impatience: “You deaf or something?”
Cautiously – without a word – Carl pushed off the duvet, swung his legs over the side of the bed and dropped his feet to the carpet. He went to the corner, picked up the ball and walked it back to the window. He held it out and saw the black squiggles curving around its surface. “Who signed it?”, Carl asked. The boy didn’t answer. Instead, he grabbed the ball and ran across the lawn, disappearing into the hedges at the bottom of the garden. Carl stayed at the window for a few moments. As he stood, cool, salty air flowed past him into the room. The sprinklers pattered away.

The houses of stood in a row like colourful blocks. Mrs Friedman moved past them slowly, eyeing each in turn. The older she got, the more her taut face struggled to conceal the many jealousies, slights and conflicts that had amassed behind it. And so, more and more often, some of the bile overflowed back into the world, escaping her thin lips as a pointed whisper or, sometimes, even a direct attack – which is what happened next.
“Have you eyes?” Her frail voice floated down the drive, weakening with every inch. It was almost imperceptible by the time it reached Mr Fuller’s ears. It was, however, just enough to make him turn around and investigate. Seeing her, he smiled and began walking toward her, wiping his palm on a rag and setting up to shake hands.
“Hi there and good morning”, he said, “I’m Paul Fuller – new to the neighbourhood and it’s very nice to meet you.”
She stared at his outstretched hand and remained perfectly still, her white-knuckled fingers wrapped around the Zimmer frame. The man’s pleasantness confounded her – as had his claim that he was new to the area (that the house had been for sale was news to her). But, after a moment’s stasis, she managed to brush all this away and gesture weakly toward the drive. She asked again, “have you eyes?”
“Excuse me, madam?”, Paul replied.
“Your weeds”, she said, raising her eyebrows to indicate the displeasure she felt at having to repeat herself.
Paul scratched the back of his head and looked at the little green shoots that were just starting to peep through the cracks in the paving stones.
“I’m almost waist deep in them.”
“Oh. We’ve just moved in.” Paul said defensively. “In fact, we’re actually still moving in”. He pointed to the delivery van parked on the drive. “But, well – I’ll get the weeds cleaned up just as soon as I can, madam.”
“Good”, she said, resuming her slow shuffle down the street. Inside a cluster of bushes, two bright eyes were fixed upon her; a little fist gripped a weighty ball.

Mrs Alleman’s hands burned pink in the washing up bowl. She’d read somewhere that, for every additional degree she could tolerate, another species of germ was eliminated. Since then, increasing the temperature had become something of a challenge. She enjoyed the sharp tingle she felt as she pushed it up a little more each day, and she believed she was approaching what was possible for a human hand to endure. Her vindication came on the rare occasions when her husband or a friend got splashed dropping in a bowl or plate, or when they tried to fish out a piece of cutlery or a utensil, and jumped back in utter shock. “The hotter it is, the cleaner it is”, she’d sing, voicing the mantra that so often cycled in her mind.
Through the steam and the droplets running down the glass, she could just about see her husband talking to the new neighbour – or rather, the neighbour talking to him. Even from across the road, her husband’s discomfort was apparent, revealing itself in his demure, slouching gait and the way he kept glancing back at the house as though worried it would vanish and leave him stranded on this earnest stranger’s lawn. Left to his own devices, she knew, it would have taken him weeks or months to introduce himself – and, even then, it would only have happened thanks to some chance encounter at the grocery store or in the park, or in some other communal space, and only if the other party initiated it.
His awkwardness endeared her. It always had. Though, seeing her husband’s vacant face staring over this stranger’s shoulder, she experienced something else – something that was getting a little more familiar these days: a smidge of annoyance, perhaps. She pushed it away, reminding herself of all the things he did for her and for their family. Sighing, she pulled her hands from the blistering water and dried them off.
“Hi there”, she shouted as she crossed the road, waving with one hand and using the other to shield her eyes from the morning sun. “Welcome to Sunningdale. We’re so glad to see someone finally move in to this beautiful house. Mr and Mrs Cartwright only put in on the market on account of her mother’s – his mother in-law’s – health, bless her, which took a real turn last year. Cancer! I know. I mean, absolutely the last thing she needed. Her husband, Mrs Cartwright’s father – Mr Cartwright’s father-in-law – died last Christmas, sadly. Yes, on Christmas day itself, which they say is a very common day to die. I’m not sure why. Something to do with being surrounded with family? Maybe. Who knows? Anyway, the only reason they moved is to be closer to her in what will most probably be her final year. They were completed devastated to lose the house, of course – their home for over twenty years. But they needed to downsize, anyway. Two birds and all that. I actually remember seeing him carry her over the threshold. And haven’t they kept it lovely? I suppose that’s one of the reasons you bought it – gosh, yes, they really did keep it lovely, didn’t they? And is there a Mrs…”
“Fuller”, Paul answered, “And no, sadly not. There used to be. But she died – three years ago. Not on Christmas day. But also of cancer. Absolutely the last thing we needed.”
Mrs Alleman’s face dropped. “Oh, gosh – I’m so sorry. How cack-handed of me.”
With a smile, Paul revealed he was type of man who could joke about his partner’s death, which was a relief to the Alleman’s in the moment, but which would cause some disquiet to both of them as they lay siltenly in their beds that night.

I am referring to the attacks on Anthony Taylor and his family. I feel disgusted by this abhorrent behaviour. It will never be alright to attack someone over football. And attacking a man while with his wife and daughter is absolutely disgusting. Every discussion on this topic should start by admitting this.
I still want to share my thoughts on what happened: -Roma fans are not represented by a small minority who went beyond words, and actually tried to attack Taylor. Call for banning all Roma fans indiscriminately or Roma as a club make no sense. There should be accountability, the people who did that should be identified and face consequences for what they put that family through;

I mean what the actual fuck, he was vocal about the shitshow that the referrees were responsible for, he did not incite violence. Even if he didnt speak, every Roma fan would still be pissed at the decision making throughout the match. How do you jump from shouting disgrace to he is telling people to attack a person? I understand a lot of people hate Mourinho, but come on, he obviously does not accept violence, and he intended to criticise the ref, not order a fucking assault. Words and actions are two very different things.
-Finally, on accountability. Are people ignoring the fact that a major mistake was made by the refs in an European Final? Its difficult to be a ref for all the hate you get, this much is true, but what happened to responsability? A manager is bad and he is sacked, a regular person works if they make a major mistake they face the consequences. On the other hand, refs make mistakes with great impact on other people and most of the time their career goes on like nothing happened. That was clearly a penalty, his arm is not tucked to the body, it is open, changed the trajectory of the ball, the cross was not so close that he could not react, it is a clear penalty, and the refs did not explain their decision on why it isnt, people usually ignore that the penalty happened or simply say that is not a penalty and refuse to elaborate, there are literally no excuses, no tucked arm and not a close shot, not a difficult decision. I should add something that I think is very important. During the match, Taylor, when faced by the Roma players after the handball made the gesture that the arm was tucked and there was no way to get it out of the way, this is not the case. However, we dont know what he saw, we dont know his perspective when that happended, because maybe from his position he truly had the impression that that was the case and no penalty should be awarded (stay with me until the end). Not accouting for the double standard for yellow cards and all the minor mistakes he made, this is one where, in my opinion, ALL of the responsability is in the VAR team. VAR exists to correct the mistakes that refs on the field made because they didn't have the right angle to make the right decision or it happened so fast that they couldn't really spot it. Technology was introduced to improve the game, but 3 people sitting in a room looking at the replay did not correct him or even call him to check, how?! How can you sit in a room, with every angle of replay available, no pressure from the stadium noise or from the players, you look at that and say the arm is tucked with the body when it is clearly creating the very volume that intercepts the cross? If the field refs did not spot it for whatever reason, even that I can forgive, but if you are in a different room, checking all the replays in the world and still dont see the decision is wrong, its impossible, he justified it by saying the arm is tucked but in the replays you clearly see the opposite, so why the fuck would you not call him to confirm the (wrong) understanding he had?
Rant over, thanks for reading if you have made it this far, violent episodes are something no club wants to be associated with, I am ashamed for their behaviour. So even if you dont respect Taylor the professional, I respect Mr. Taylor the human, and Mr. Taylor the family man that does not deserve to be attacked in any circumstances, much less with his loved ones beside him.

Saw it fit to make a help thread for stickers since there's little to no guides on them yet. I'll update this post with the ones I can find.
First off, I'm pretty sure you need to have the camera equipped to actually take pictures of the stickers and collect them. You can get the camera from the present in Make A Star 2 (the sleepy guy's stage). It's on an RC car in the park area, very hard to miss.
Hot tip by the way, stickers are collected as soon as they're counted as being in a picture you take. You can quit out or fail the level, you wont lose the sticker.

Since Mandy still had not turned up and most everyone else in the house had things to do, Paul decided little Dan could spend the rest of the morning, at least, with him. He got himself and the child properly dressed, then opted to tuck the lad into his own oversized coat as they stepped out into the blustery air.
"You can't walk much yet, eh?" Paul said.
"Haaa," Danny intimated.
"Well, I can haul you about. 'Sides, even if you could walk, you've no shoes."
They set off down the street, Paul humming to himself as he usually did. The baby's downy hair tickled under the shelf of his chin, and it almost made him laugh.
This was going to be an odd day.
At the corner, Betty and Joey from down the street were about to cross. Betty had her big shopping basket; they had paused so she could redo the buttons on Joey's jacket.
"Pree baby," Joey slurred as Paul stopped beside them, and his free hand fluttered upward for a moment before he looked worriedly to Betty.
"C'n I? C'n?"
"He's wondering if he could pat Danny's hair," Betty translated.
"Oh," Paul nodded. "Sure, I guess."
Joey's fingers gently played with the faint strands for a moment, and then Joey grinned.
"M'pal," he said, and pointed to Danny.
"You got duty today, hmm?" Betty murmured, trying to strike up conversation.
Paul nodded again.
"Yup. Mandy wasn't back yet, and everyone was busy, so..."
"Got a day off or that?"
"Sure," Paul said, and laughed weakly.
Betty and Joey headed on then, and Paul waved to them, then checked that he had Danny securely settled.
It was a little embarrassing to know he was one of the few on the street that had no proper job or other productive way to pass time. Mostly he walked around the city, window shopping and reading newspapers or magazines. Sometimes he went to a library and read up on things needed around the squat, like repairs. At least then he felt he was doing something.
Today, he figured, would be mostly a going-inside-places day. Probably he could have just stayed in the house, but that always made him feel half-mad. Still, with the baby along, it would make sense not to stay out in the cold too much. Poor little guy might freeze.
Still, they walked a long way before Paul decided to stop in at that silly little music shop, Muztara. That place was always a little too warm, but there were spots to sit, and the owners always had free tea and cake for customers.
The door of the shop had a whole little rig of tiny brass bells that it rang when opened; Danny seemed to like that. At least he laughed and made a repetitive little "Shhhiii, shiiii" noise for a bit after. The slouchy guy behind the till looked up and waved.
"Hey, Paul."
"Hey."
As Paul was moving toward the tea urn, the guy moved generally that direction as well, slotting some LPs into a bin.
"You got a kid now?" he asked.
"Uhm," Paul said, filling a styrene cup and settling himself on a bench.
"We got milk, if ya want. For the kid."
"Ah? Tha'd be great. Ta."
Unfastening his coat, Paul eased Danny out and plumped the kid down on the bench at his side.
"How old's he?" the slouchy guy asked, reappearing from some back room with the milk.
"Uh, just a year."
"Cool. 'S'name?"
"Daniel. Danny, mostly."
"Nice. Here ya go then, Danny."
The guy had poured some milk into a funny little plastic teacup, and he handed it carefully to the baby, who very seriously accepted it and then stared at it, confused. Shaking his head and smiling, Paul set his tea aside for a moment to help the little lad drink.
"He's not s' good with cups just yet."
"Ah. Figures, as he's s' young."
There were a lot of biscuits and cakes laid out near the tea urn in boxes, and now Danny was craning his head around to look at them.
"Bikit?" he asked.
"Okay, little guy. One biscuit."
Paul chose soft rather than something crunchy, figuring that was best for little teeth. Danny seemed happy either way, shoving his milk cup into Paul's hands so he could concentrate on the sweet.
They sat a long time there. Now and then other people entered the shop. A few commented on Danny, mostly saying he was real cute. Paul felt proud whenever they did, since they also mostly seemed to think he was the baby's dad. It was flattering, sort of.
Eventually, Danny got fussy, rubbing his eyes and leaning against Paul's arm, whining. Probably he was tired. Paul stood slowly, stretching, then picked Danny up and tucked him back into the coat, fastening it carefully.
"Headed back out?" the slouchy guy yawned.
"Mm-hmm."
"Have a good day."
Danny seemed happier once they were back on the street, burrowing his head against Paul's jumper and ceasing his whining. Paul decided a library might be all right next. It would be nice and quiet. Little guy might sleep a bit.
Sure enough, by the time they reached the intended destination, Danny was well asleep, drooling just slightly. No big deal.
For the hour and a half that Danny slept, Paul read mostly about gardening. At the squats, everyone sort of worked together to grow a bit of food in the back gardens to save money, and he had some ideas for new vegetable beds they could try in a few months. Nothing in the books seemed to indicate his ideas were insane; very good.
Once Danny was waking up, a little blinky and confused, Paul reshelved his books and they took off again.
"Wanna go to the park, Dan?" Paul asked.
"Parg? Parg."
So to a park they went. Danny toddled about in the grass, stopping here and there to sit or crouch and stare at some fascinating pebble or such. Paul followed him, making sure he did not swallow rocks or something. Presently, the kid stopped and, looking focused, stood very still a while, grunting. Then he looked up to Paul.
"Help," he said.
"What, little guy? What help?"
Kneeling, Paul instantly caught a whiff of what needed help.
"Ah, no. Jeez. Come on, Dan. We oughta head home."
