Question about Belgian-Flemish heritage.
2023.06.03 09:43 SpreadTotalahj Question about Belgian-Flemish heritage.
My paternal grandfather was from Antwerp. He immigrated here (Iowa) with his parents when he was an infant during the late 1930s, for some reason, he married my half-Dutch, half-French paternal grandmother. I also know that he volunteered to serve in the Vietnam War in order to show his American patriotism. Thus, he did not teach my father to speak Flemish or introduce him to any Flemish culture..
So, year, I really want to connect with my ancestor and learn about his cultures. So I thought it were the right place to ask. Where do I start? Is there iconic thing I should research? Good references ?
I also want too add that I'm not in anyway identifying myself as a Belgian or Flemish and really don't want to be rude or anything negative. I really just want to learn about my ancestors and different cultures!

2023.06.03 08:55 kgb771 My (21M) ex (21F) left me and I want to know how my chances stand at getting back together
For context, we were dating for 1.5 years and we were pretty happy in the earlier parts of the relationship. We started as friends and developed into more over the course of 3 months in college. We have a lot of shared interests and we handled arguments pretty easily together. We took things slow in our relationship to build a good foundation and we were really in love with each other. We have really crazy once in a lifetime memories together that I don't think either of us could forget about.
Towards the ends of our relationship (the last month of it) I was putting too much pressure on her to spend more time with me and I would check in on her too much while she was out with friends making sure she was okay. It wasn't crazy person levels of checking in but it was enough to make her uncomfortable/annoyed with me doing it. I ended up being pretty clingy for the past month we were together, before that I still asked if she wanted to hangout too much but I wasn't nearly as needy back then. After a I bothered her two nights in a row she said she has lost romantic feelings for me. Obviously it was because I was being needy and I sought out a lot of time together rather than quality time together. We tried to make things work for a week but by then she said she wants to break up. I didn't fight her breakup since it seemed like she needed the space and I didn't want to make her stick in a situation where she wasn't happy. She was really sad during the breakup and didn't wish we had to but she felt like it would be inevitable if we didn't. We both handled it very maturely and remain on good terms.
After we broke up, we mostly cut contact, but I sent like 2 total texts at different times near the beginning of the breakup saying that I missed her and she's in my thoughts and I love her to let her know she is cared for, nothing like begging for her back. She responded in kind with stuff like "It's been really hard" and "I miss/love you too." We also ran into each other at the gym on a few occasions and said hi. At one point we arranged a meetup to walk my dog together and on it she said that she would be willing to try the relationship again when summer ends with a fresh start and that she doesn't know if she's ready to talk yet since she is still grieving the breakup and it feels too fresh to do anything together (this was 3 weeks post breakup). She said she would probably be ready to talk again when school ended which is next week. I have barely talked to her and just been giving her as much space as I'm able to since it's what she wanted. A few days ago (week 5 of the breakup) I dropped off a jacket I thought was hers (turns out it wasn't) a scarf I got for her and a letter. This letter wasn't an attempt to get her back, the contents of it were just me apologizing for where I went wrong in the relationship and that I would approach the relationship differently and I hope we can start building up a friendship and whatever happens happens. It was short, sweet, and sincere.
She texted me saying "Thanks for thinking of me, that's really nice of you. I appreciate the letter also." She also was laughing because it wasn't her sweater and said I can come around to pick it back up before she leaves for the summer and she walked out to hand it to me, not leaving it at doorstep. Almost all of her texts have been friendly (hearts and smiley faces) and straight forward, telling me kinda what she wants/needs. She also kept up the majority of our photos together up online and hasn't removed me from any of her social media. We can contact each other at any time and I'm sure she would respond fairly quick.
I really have taken a lot of time to evaluate why I felt the way I did in those moments and what would be different this time and I think I have become a genuinely better person and could be a better partner and I learned what healthier boundaries are. I can give more info into the relationship in comments if needed. I was thinking that I could reach out sometime in the next week or two to start actually talking again slowly and build up rapport to get a connection between us. She is going to be going across the country where she doesn't really know anyone over the summer for an internship so I'm assuming that she would appreciate someone to talk to when there isn't going to be many people where she is.
She has not been with any guys and doesn't participate in any hookup culture so I know she didn't leave me to be with anyone else, so just don't bother putting that in the comments.
Also, as another bit of background, towards the beginning of our relationship I drank too much alcohol at threw up at her place which made her really upset and she broke up and we talked it out a few days later and got back together, so she is isn't a one and done kinda person. She also was really upset that before the breakup I said breakups are final to me since she still wanted me in her life, but in one of my few messages to her I apologized for saying that and I would still like to be in each other's life (I originally said that because my last ex made life hell being off/on). Her parents had also broken up multiple times and gotten back together so maybe that is something to consider so she *probably* also shares the view that you can get back together.
If we got back together I think it would be for good this time and we wouldn't continue a pattern of breaking up only to get back together. I do think this breakup has been healthy for me and needed, I would just like the chance to get back together.
Tldr: My ex lost feelings but we remained kind together and I want to know if it's possible to get back together.
My question is if it sounds like I have a good chance of getting back together as well as what would be the best way to reach out to herebuild a connection?

2023.06.03 08:30 BruhEmperor Presidential Term of Thomas Custer (1889-1893) American Interflow Timeline
| After 12 years of trials and errors, Thomas Custer would finally rise and claim the presidency in a Post-Barnum era. With the nation being fundamentally changed in the past 8 years and with the effect of Barnum’s administration still very prevalent, like the still persistent Revelationist and Communard issues, Custer would need to uncharacteristically tread carefully to prevail in such a climate. President Thomas Custer’s Cabinet Vice President - Alfred A. Taylor Secretary of State - Francis Cockrell Secretary of the Treasury - Adlai Stevenson I Secretary of War - John Potter Stockton Secretary of the Navy - Arthur Sewall Secretary of the Interior - Thomas Goode Jones Attorney General - Jesse Root Grant II Secretary of Sustenance - Sylvester Pennoyer Secretary of Public Safety - Lyon G. Tyler (resigned May 1891), John R. McLean (read about the campaigns against the radicals here) Left? Right? No, Custerite! During his election campaign, the president promised a wide-range of groups things he would do in a future administration. Appealing to liberals, conservatives, nationalists, populists, militarists, anti-imperialists, and pro-reconciliationists, Custer would be flexible and non-partisan in his policies in order to fulfil such promises. Custer would first appeal to the anti-imperialist wing of his support by renegotiating to United States' promised port in the Congo during the Berlin Conference, crafted by Secretary Francis Cockrell, the United States would sell their land claims to the French on August 1889 for $1,250,000. The move would receive praise from anti-imperialists like Senators George Boutwell (F-MA) and Grover Cleveland (C-NY), and Representatives Edward Atkinson (C-MA) and John Wanamaker (P-PA), although opposition was brought in by some Commons and the old Barnumites like Representative William McKinley (F-OH). Land designated for the United States (dark blue) were sold to the French Empire Appealing to the pro-reconciliationists would be a harder feat than any of this. Ever since the end of the Civil War, stigmatism between the black and white communities in the south grew, it was further boosted by the barring policy of the Davis and Hamlin administrations which divided communities between whites and blacks to prevent violence. Forced integration was implemented by Custer with the Integration and Co-operation Act of 1889 which merged local segregated communities and forced some citizens living in those communities to live within the other group's area. Anti-reconciliationists like Senator Arthur Pue Gorman (C-MD) and Representative Benjamin Tillman (C-SC) opposed the bill, as they were elected within or with the backing of a white-only segregated community, though the pro-reconciliationists, which composed of both of the old pro and anti Barnumites, populists, salvationists, and progressives pushed the bill to pass Congress. Capitol Building 1889 The act faced major scrutiny from both black and white anti-reconciliationists, which pushed it as dictatorial and a breach of their civil liberties. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States in the case Jennings v. Gibbs, in which Florida county lawyer William Sherman Jennings sued Representative Thomas Van Renssalaer Gibbs (F-FL) for 'infringing on and decrying civil liberties' by his support of the act. Gibbs' lawyers sighted the act was to end possible future violence between the two groups and claimed it was for the overall wellbeing of the country and to the citizen as their move was paid for by the government itself and that it was within the government's authority to enforce such acts, while Jennings sighted the First Amendment, claiming to this act violated the right of petition the government as the citizens were more or less forced into integrating without a say. The court decided on June 10th, 1890, and sided 5-4 in favor of Gibbs, claiming that it was within the government's right to enforce such an act. Although the court did also sort of sided with Jennings, pushing that the citizens moved out of their communities must give their consent and approval of moving out. Justice Robert Roosevelt wrote the majority opinion: " It is within Congress' right to enforce such laws that they apply, although it is also important to receive the consent and approval of those being affect by the laws they apply, as without it is simple tyranny.". The Supreme Court just marked pro-reconciliation acts as constitutional. Lawyer William Sherman Jennings and Representative Thomas Van Renssalaer Gibbs With Custer getting the greenlight on reconciliation, he began to deal with those dissenting on his new laws. Some violence and unrest arose from anti-reconciliation protestors causing riots and clashes with the police, in one incident, an anti-reconciliation mob beat one police officer to death and threw in body in the streets. The incident shocked the nation and many demanded justice, this gave Custer the backing to enact another plan he had. In the span of June-August, thousands of anti-reconciliationist rioters were arrested and sent to ' re-education facilities' to be 're-educated' about their beliefs, those re-educated would be release after a month and if they caused more dissent they would be thrown back into the facilities to be 're-educated' once again. No one exactly knows what happens in the facilities but rumors going from torture to brainwashing are common, but those released from the facilities never talk about their experience there. Although, anti-reconciliation violence has been significantly reduced ever since the program was created. Custer's Politics for Dummies The Presidential Cabinet has always been more or less been aligned with the president's beliefs, although in this case, with the president's beliefs all over the place, the cabinet would be quiet diverse. Some would have quite populistic beliefs like Treasury Secretary Stevenson and Sustenance Secretary Pennoyer, some would be traditionally conservative like Navy Secretary Sewall, War Secretary Stockton, and Secretary of Public Safety Tyler, and some would be considered more liberal like Secretaries Cockrell and Jones, and Attorney General Grant. This caused some division in the cabinet, with many members having different opinions on issues, like the admission of more states in the plain, with the more populistic members being for it and the conservative ones being against it. Vice President Alfred A. Taylor, who was often the most moderate within the cabinet, often had headaches due to the amount of bickering in the cabinet, privately saying, " I would rather have been the presidential cook than a member of this cabinet.". Taylor was known for serving delicious Tennessee Cornbread during cabinet meetings and public events, which were from his own recipe. On the Congressional front, politics there too was starkly changing. The Radical People's and Christian Salvation Parties had faced a significant decline over the last election and were facing even complete dissolution. The bells did toll for the Salvationists, as on June 1, 1889, waiting for a train going from his hometown of Freeport, Illinois to Chicago, Senator Charles J. Guiteau was shot by an assailant who was connected to the Salvationists. The bullet did not puncture his heart though and he was immediately treated by doctors. The doctors, however, operated on him with unsterilized fingers and tools trying to find the bullet, and Guiteau contracted an infection which slowly weakened his health. Guiteau would pass away on June 30th, which ended a major figurehead for the Salvationists. With their main leader gone, the Salvationists and their party were now certainly going to fall, so once again they turned to the Populists to help, they proposed a merge of their parties, unlike the Visionary Alliance back in 1884, this move would be permanent. A joint Radical People's-Christian Salvation convention was called in D.C., in which they decided to form the Reformed People's Party which would incorporate both Populist and Salvationist agendas. All Salvationists and Populists would run on this party's banner starting on the 1890 midterms, causing a wave of new support of their joint movements to grow. Representatives like Jerry Simpson (RP-KA), Charles Tupper (CS-NS), and Marion Butler (RP-NC), and Senator John P. St. John (CS-KA), although notably the party leader Senator James B. Weaver (RP-IA) did not outright support the merger. Representative Jerry Simpson and Senator John P. St. John. Troubles also arose within the ruling party itself. With Custer's moves in office being controversial not only nation-wide but also within his own party. Many Commons were repulsed by Custer's appeal to nationalists and populists, like his push for isolationism, labor reform, free trade, and anti-gold standard policies, which saw as the reason why the current economy was entering a small recession. The Custer administration was also known as notoriously corrupt, though Custer himself was more blind to the issue than actually involved in it, it was well-known that politicians like Secretary Tyler were making backdoor deals with businessmen like J.P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie, even personally aiding in putting down worker strikes. Representative William Kissam Vanderbilt (P-NY) even once said, " The difference between a crafty serpent and a pro-big business politician? They have heels, I suppose.". These anti-reform and anti-Custerite politicians within the Commonwealth Party were called ' Reactionaries'. The reactionaries would included members like Senators Arthur Pue Gorman and John M. Palmer (C-IL) and Representatives like John Carlisle (C-KY). The reactionaries would form a major bloc within the party, often favoring militarism and traditional values in Congress, as seen from there opposition of the pro-reconciliation bills and their support for things like the gold standard and imperialism. But also from the other side of the spectrum are the people who see Custer as not reforming enough. Although they weren't as loud as the reactionaries and still mainly accept the situation, many still want more reform coming from the high office. The groups members included the likes of Representatives Samuel M. Jones (F-OH) and Charles N. Felton (C-CA), advocating mostly for internationalism, taxes, anti-corruption measures, and tariff reduction. Though more extreme politicians like Jones would call for monopoly busting, strong regulation, and direct elections. Senator Arthur Pue Gorman and Representative Charles N. Felton would represent two very different sides of the same party The Freedom Party had faced its largest split since the Federalist-Freedomite split during Henry Clay’s term. After the elections of 1888, the former Anti-Barnumites had taken control of most major positions in the main Freedom Party after the Conservative Freedom Party remerged with them. Staunch Anti-Barnumites like the pragmatic Representative Thomas Brackett Reed and stanch conservative Senator William Pierce Frye (F-MA) would all head their party in Congress. The remaining former Barnumites such as Representative William McKinley sought to amend the wounds between their counterparts and began the works to begin reconciling between the factions. Though many Freedomites were unsure about reconciling with the other faction, members like McKinley, Reed, and Representative Henry Clay Evans (F-TN) were influential in eventually mending their relations by the 1890 midterms, showing a mostly fully united party. This also was partly helped by the fact that former President Phineas Taylor Barnum would call for his old party’s unification, which had some mixed reactions in the party. The aging former President P.T. Barnum who would later die on April 1891 (read here about the Military Crisis of 1890 here) The Military's Resolve The government would once again refused the military extremists' demands of increased power. As such, the 700 or so extremists would attempt to storm the White House, with others were sent to seize government buildings and offices against the capitol. The D.C. police was immediately called to hold back the group and a shootout immediately ensued outside the White House. 2 hours passed as the shootout continued and both rebels and police were shot dead, the White House received significant damage due to artillery brought by the rebels, with some rebels even entering the now evacuated building. As the 3rd hour mark hit, military loyalist finally arrived at the scene, led by Harrison Gray Otis and Arthur MacArthur, the 3,000 loyalists sent engaged the rebels who were now resorting to guerilla warfare. 3 more hours would pass as the loyalists would trek to find the rebels scattered around Capitol Hill, it finally cease as the loyalists would find and capture both Jacob H. Smith and J. Franklin Bell hiding in an abandoned building, the remaining rebels would surrender in the 7th hour. Over 500 people would die in the so-called " Battle of Capitol Hill". Government loyalist in the outskirts of D.C. looking for rebels The affair caused a uproar across the nation, with some siding the government claiming the military was being spoiled, while some supported the rebel's calls claiming the remaining restrictions were still ruining their careers. It also divided the military more, with some siding with the loyalists and some adhering to the rebel's calls. Fears began to rise of a second Civil War due to such divisions, as some Reactionary politicians began to support the militarist cause. Immediate calls within the government were pushing for appeasement to the militarists to avoid another rebellion. Thus negotiators began to work on something to ease the stress of the military resulting in quite the controversial move. The 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution would add 9 seats to the House of Representatives that would be designated for the military. Called the 'Military Representatives', 9 servicemen would be chosen from either branch of the military to serve as Representatives for the military's interests. The Representatives would be appointed by the president and approved by the Senate and members could be removed by the president during House elections. The amendment was ratified with astonishing speed, being ratified only two months after it was proposed on February 23, 1891 right before the 52nd Congress met on March 4th. Custer also personally backed the amendment, with others like Representative Thomas B. Reed and William Kissam Vanderbilt supporting it. The 9 Military Representatives were sworn in along with the other 349 normally elected Representatives. Despite the amendment being quickly ratified, it still faced major opposition from anti-militarists and especially the remaining Populists and Salvationists. Representative Henry Clay Evans about the amendment, " If this amendment were to pass, we would be nothing but lapdogs to the armed forces, always in fear of a military rebellion.". Senator Daniel W. Voorhees (P-IN) stated, " Giving any more powers to the military would strip our fairly elected government of independence and reason, as fear would now dominate our politics.". Speaker Alexander S. Clay (C-GA) would be ousted as Speaker by John Wanamaker after the midterms in an anti-Commonwealth vote, Clay would later state, " Was supporting the amendment to the Constitution the right action? I do not know that answer. Yet I know one thing. It was the only action there was." Results of the 1890 House of Representatives Elections Results of the 1890 Senate Elections Tommy the Man After the meltdowns of the past two years, Custer would focus in his domestic and foreign policy. Custer would continue his pro-reconciliation policies, achieving slow success across the south, with some forcefully integrated communities prospering and with some having being burnt to the ground. Both pro-labor and pro-business policies would be implemented, such as an 8-hour work day and a shorter work week, other than this, businesses would be usually deregulated and were given reigns in handling any of their practices, with businessmen such as J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and John D. Rockefeller emerging as powerful figures nationally, with their monopolies being wide reaching. Cartoon mocking the rise of corporations and their growing power over politics Custer's more reformist policies would deter some of his allies against him, as the likes of Public Safety Secretary Lyon G. Tyler, who disliked Custer's rowdiness in politics in general. Tyler basically had enough went Custer vetoed many legislations that were drafted by the Commons themselves. Tyler resigned as Secretary on May 1891, being replaced by the more moderate John R. McLean. Despite being bashed for his reforms, Custer would also be criticized for his more conservative policies too. A believer in laissez-faire economics and free trade, Custer would refuse to intervene in the economy even when it entered a recession during 1890-91. Custer would often get criticized for allowing big business to skyrocket out of control with their monopolies and trusts, though he would claim his concern was only of the workers' well being. Governor Nathan Goff Jr. (P-VA) would criticize Custer's domestic policies by stating, " Protectionism, direct elections, and internationalism are core things we need in this day and age, not only in Virginia but nationally, yet the president has rejected all of them.". Custer's domestic policies would see opposition from the new reformed populists, which called the Commonwealth Party the party of ' Business, Booze, and Boors'. Custer, despite being a self-proclaimed 'isolationist', often had interest in foreign affairs yet couldn't act on them as fearing it would deter his supporters. When war broke out in South America in December 31, 1891, when Argentina, who is run by the dictator Nicholas Levalle who recently staged a coup against the government, and Bolivia invaded Chile and Paraguay (more on in the foreign events section), Custer privately sought intervention in favor of Chile and Paraguay to preserve their democracies. Yet Congress and the general public were staunchly against any intervention in South America as they saw as another foreign war. Anti-intervention sentiment grew even further when the Empire of Brazil intervened in favor of Chile and Paraguay on April 1, 1892, their force now being called the ' Continental Alliance', causing the scale of the war to increase and the death toll to grow. Though the public opinion was firmly sympathetic to the Continental Alliance, some in government sought to aid the ' Golden Alliance' of Argentina and Bolivia, as they saw helping them as a way to control their economy and politics, though yet again the majority rejected intervention. Custer did consult his cabinet on what to do on the matter, which Secretaries Sewall and Jones were in favor of intervention, though other like Secretary Cockrell and Attorney General Grant were against it which ultimately led Custer to not intervene for the time being. The US did sell highly demanded imports to both sides of the conflict, which yielded major profit. - Major Foreign Events - The War Down Even More South High inflation, corruption, and bad worker rights in Argentina caused major unrest against the government. The Revolution of Park broke out against the government then run by the conservative National Autonomist Party on July 26, 1890. The rebels captured an arms and ammunition facility in the city and began to arm themselves as government began to apprehend them. The government forces were caught off guard by the now armed rebels and were forced to retreat, the rebels then turned to the Casa Rosada and the president, the revolutionaries successfully broke through the guards and stormed the building, forcing President Manuel Celman to resign. A revolutionary junta was put in place of the government as a new larger government loyalist force was organized to recapture the capitol, which led was by General Nicholas Levalle. The loyalist force successfully defeated revolutionary resistance in the capitol and entered the Casa Rosada, the revolutionary junta was defeat although President Celman had been executed and Vice President Pellegrini had fled the city. Levalle, seeing an opportunity, declared himself emergency president, even rejecting Pellegrini when he returned to the city. Over the past months, Lavalle would style himself with dictatorial powers over the Argentine government, which only fueled his ego. General Nicholas Levalle of Argentina Lavalle was a man who opposed the resolve of the border dispute between Chile in Patagonia which restricted Argentina outside the Pacific Ocean. In tandem, Bolivia's Gregorio Pacheco, who succeeded his very pro-Chile predecessor, had designs on Chile after Bolivia had lost the War of the Pacific, as well as Paraguay. Lavalle had secret meetings with Pacheco regarding their plan on Chile, later including Paraguay to the discussion, many meetings later and they decided on a plan to demand land from both nations. Their militaries were built up in the coming months to prepare for the incoming conflict. On December 26, 1891, Bolivia sent an ultimatum to Chile demanding their coastal provinces lost in the War of the Pacific to be returned, Argentina would back them the next day. On the 27th, Bolivia demanded full recognition of the control of the Chaco region from Paraguay, which Argentina backed the same day. Given until the 31st to respond, the Chilean and Paraguayan governments refused to respond to the ultimatums, so on the 31st, Bolivia declared war on Chile and Bolivia, Argentina would declare war on January 2nd. The campaigns at first favored the 'Golden Alliance' of Argentina and Bolivia, which saw advanced in the north of Chile and southern Paraguay. By February, the Golden Alliance would be nearing the Paraguayan capital of Asuncion, which worried their neighbor to the east, the Empire of Brazil. Empress Isabel I was facing a waning popularity, especially after her father abolished slavery, and the public were firmly against the Golden Alliance. Fearing Argentina's and Bolivia's victory would shatter trust in her even more, she decided to intervene. An ultimatum was sent to Argentina, dictating to end the war or face a blockade, the Argentinians ignored the order. Brazilian ships would begin a naval blockade against Argentina, but oddly some ships were ordered to go dangerously close to the Argentina coast on February 25th. As the ships grew near, the Argentine coast guard were unable to recognize the vessels and assumed they were Chilean and open fired. Despite Argentina apologizing for the incident, the affair caused enough outrage in Brazil to secure that a war was a certain. Brazil declared war on both Argentina and Bolivia on April 1st, forming the 'Continental Alliance' with Chile and Paraguay. The war would rage on from April-August as many foreign nations watched, with both sides gaining the upper hand many times and thousands dead or wounded. By August, both sides would be exhausted by war and bloodshed and needed something to tip the scales. 2023.06.03 07:50 Boardstill Switching major from food science after freshman year
TLDR; thinking of switching from food science to a major that utilizes my strong writing and communications skills better and also actually interests me, but not sure of a potential alternative career path and if it would be worth giving up the financial security.
This is gonna be a long post sorry
Basically I went into college intending to major in food science. Why? In high school I had the opportunity to shadow a food scientist in a class and I thought the career was cool. I've always been passionate about food and cooking and I enjoy chemistry.
Food science is a very technical field that combines aspects of biology, microbiology, organic chemistry, engineering etc. and jobs tend to span the range from product development to Quality assurance and food safety to more nutrition-focused or marketing jobs. Basically it has great value because while the field is niche, there are pretty consistent opportunities and with the strong program at my school + the industry connections I will most likely be able to get a high paying job right out of college (based on what I've seen from FS graduates at my university).
I went into my freshman year undecided, but finished up my gen eds and took the STEM prerequisites as well as a food science survey course, intending to declare my major in Food Science the beginning of my sophomore year. Along the way I had doubts but it wasn't till a few days ago that I started to majorly reconsider my choice.
My reasoning was two-fold:
- In my STEM classes, I did not do as well as I could have not because I wasn't capable, but because I was uninterested. I would experience existential dread having to do with the class, leading to me failing to study for a test or stopping turning in assignments due to disinterest for a spell. This would hurt my grade, but not completely sabotage it because it would only be for a short spell of a few weeks to a month. This happened with Calc, Chem and Biology.
I would like to note that it wasn't simply that my classes were difficult and boring. I can deal with doing things I don't want to do. It was rather that my aptitudes of reading and writing/critical thinking and analysis, which I have always been way better at than math and science, were being neglected. I didn't feel passionate and convicted in what I was doing and I believe that this lack of passion was holding me back from being the best version of myself. I care a lot about history, art, culture, literature, and film and basically anything humanities and social sciences. I was originally considering majoring in sociology before high school. I have always excelled in English classes.
- I can't really see a future for myself in the industry. Going along with the aptitudes thing, I found my chemistry lab to be incredibly tedious and technical. I can't seriously picture myself working in a lab for the rest of my life and while there are other possible paths with a food science major, for the next 3 years pretty much all of my classes would be science classes with lab components. I don't hate science but I can't bring myself to care about it very much. I would be ok with slogging through 3 years of coursework if it was for a future I was really excited about, but for now there isn't one. I still love cooking and food and initially wanted to be a research chef, but I work in the service industry right now and don't see working at a kitchen as realistically worth the pain for me (it is an incredibly difficult and harrowing profession).
As of right now I have two choices:
- Stick it out and graduate with a food science degree: classes will be difficult, mildly interesting but not inspiring. The major does not play to my strengths as a student and thus I will probably not excel among my peers. I would likely feel dissatisfied with not being able to learn about the things I'm most interested in but I could probably land some cool internships working in the side of food science I'm most interested in (recipe development/test kitchen). Graduate and get a job and then...?
- Switch my major entirely. I'm already minoring in French and so I would most likely pair a humanities major with something more technical to build employability (e.g. a minor in statistics). I wouldn't bother this time majoring in something I didn't love, so I would probably go straight for something like English, Comparative Literature, perhaps even pick up another language like Russian, Communications (Film). The issue with this path is I have no idea what I'd do with it in the future. My pipe dream is to become a writer of some sort but that's all that really is at the moment since I have no decent work to back it up. However, with my current major I don't have time to even develop any potential skills in this area, so...
So what would you choose? And given my interests what are some possible majors for me to explore?

2023.06.03 06:24 Disastrous_Clothes_5 Should I be more outraged for the words my partner said even if at good faith or no bad will?
Well I like to state I self prescribe myself as a Mexican-American and I apologize I don't write this in Spanish I thought I'll get my point across better as of rn I'm more used to writing stuff in English. So to start with has been a old issue being brought up. I will state first of all I date multiple people yes they know of each other and ok with the arrangement.
Two of my partners live with me one southern us american and one midwest white american with Mexican descent. I love to consider myself as proud to be a Mexican for the most part. I was raised as many people of the Mexican diaspora to the US would stereotypically associate. My parents came here not so well as legal as one might want to. Most of my life I experience through that lense I grew up with Mexican/Hispanic food. My parents exclusively prefer to always speak in Spanish and hang among other Latinos. I was disciplined harshly but with care of course. I've been into Esol courses to "better" my English comprehension. Ate at Mexican own establishments, shopped at Latino own establishments. For the majority of my life up until late high school exclusively hanged around other Latinos. My partners not so much I would say before I met them they had on many cases an outsiders view of what it means to be a Latino in US especially one of Mexican heritage. Now that's to be expected to the southern white american and unfortunately my other partners father was deported before knowing his heritage.
He loves to claim it as his but I'm not sure he has a right to it rn. Let me explain, He's as white american has he can be. Doesn't speak Spanish has what appears to be no interest to learn. He continues with no substantial effort to want to learn Mexican or Hispanic culture despite the resources to learn. His closest connection being his father that to be fair is the worst you could possibly ask for one in this situation. They're cut off due to his own wishes to not interact with their father. Up until for years he would refer to Hispanics and Latinos in general as beaners and would say very blatant hatred for the culture. He has become better through the years. But I would still have to occasionally be like dude wtf. I believe my discomfort is due to his lack of connection to the culture. Especially as a whixican. I don't even believe he should care to talk as if he is Mexican.
The reason I'm saying this is mostly recently he's been angry with my other partner from the south. For multiple accusations of racism to Mexicans. I remember that at one time they joked about wetbacks due to a joke about my experience of being called that. He took offense to that and I as well and asked him to chill. And for the most part I feel that's been the only true transgression. From here I believe my Midwestern partner has been over reacting and reaching for shit.
A few weeks down the line he ask what a wet back was expected me to answer but my southern boyfriend chimed in and gave a proper answer to what it meant. And my Midwestern partner took offense for him explaining it but in all cases I didn't an issue since genuinely he just wanted to explain.
I believed that was it of the issue until my southern partner was complaining about another Mexican on Reddit for saying some fucked shit. And they refer to the poster as this Mexican due to his bio stating his origin. Explain how the person was causing harm to his fellow Hispanics by shutting them down and their concerns.
My Midwestern took offense to the Mexican comment and wants me to be outrage at my southern partner for him stating that. And I for one didn't see the problem as I believe anyone would say the Italian or French individual if referring in that specific context. But my major issue is him demanding me to be angrier. That he finds my reaction complacency to my other partners actions even when I stated my objections to many statements. He apologized before and promised improvement. I believe for one he has. But my major gripe is that he has a right to be outrage like he's the wounded party. That his culture was insulted. Like he fucking knows anything.
Idk man I just find this bs
But I want an outside opinion
Tldr: Conflict between partners. They (singular) don't have a right to be outrage about Mexican culture they know nothing about and should get over it

2023.06.03 06:14 d-constructionworker 24 [TF4A] seeking on- or offline (west coast) affection, check-ins, knowledge sharing, artsy collaboration, etc.
hi, this is mostly a hookup/sexting subreddit it seems, but perhaps someone would like to connect on a platonic or romantic level? (not ruling out sexy-times, but i need intimacy before its enjoyable for me.) i spend all day writing, so video-chatting after a bit of texting or eventual in person meetups would be ideal. i'm bi and don't really have demographic preferences besides that you aren't substantially younger than me.
i am working towards an online psych degree and studying philosophy, psychoanalysis, economics, sociology, and literature in my spare time. i play some instruments (mostly drums these days) and used to write and record music (i would like to again, especially in collaboration). i'm learning french but i'm not near fluent.
if any of the above sounds interesting to you, please shoot me a message! every time i post something like this i just get people sending 'hey', 'hi', or pictures of their penis, so please, if i may ask, write a bit about yourself:)
edit: oh and there's a pic of me on my profile somewhere

| SUMMARY OF ALEXANDER HAMILTON’S GOVERNORSHIP (1798-1800) Cabinet Attorney General: Charles Lee (1798-1800) Secretary of Foreign Affairs: John Jay (1798-1800) Secretary of Finance: Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1798-1800) Secretary of War: James McHenry (1798-1800) Preparation With the grand success of the National Party in the Assembly, Hamilton got to work with waging his war against France. Securing an alliance with Britain through the Treaty of London, America would soon find itself at war with France and its ally Spain. Through a combination of France and Spain being stretched too thin to fight effectively, and America possessing a gargantuan military thanks to its levée en masse policy, the Gulf of Mexico was successfully blockaded, and the colonial forces starved. America would then conquer its way through Louisiana, Florida, and the Caribbean until it stood as a champion. However, instead of making peace and consolidating the new territories, Hamilton had committed to a great gamble by, with the approval of the British, sending American troops directly to Europe to help put down the French Revolution for Good. Stability The American Revolution was a revolution of intellectuals; elites coming together to organize an overthrow of British rule, guiding the people along the way. The end result was initially instability, under the mob rule provided by the Articles of Confederation, but when the new Constitution came into effect, stability came and America prospered. The same could not be said for France. The French Revolution was a revolution of the mob; angry men coming out to vent themselves by storming buildings, ransacking cities, and plunging the nation into a sea of blood. Royals, nobles, religious figures, anyone suspected of being an opponent of the revolution was sent to the guillotine. It was one thing to throw off the shackles of tyranny; it was another thing altogether to frenziedly execute anyone associated with the old order. Though the Jacobin Club had been dissolved long ago, its ideals have not. There are still many radicals in the world who continue to unwaveringly support such ideals even in the face of the French themselves rejecting it; the Committee of Public Safety had been overthrown many years ago in favor of the more moderate Directorate. Chief among these remaining Jacobins was Thomas Paine, the head of the Country Party’s radicals. It was one thing to be a Jacobin; it was another thing entirely to be a Hébertist like him. With the damage done by Jacobinism as clear as day, Hamilton knew what he had to do. For the sake of not just America, for the sake of not just Europe, but for the sake of the world, the French Revolution had to be stamped out for good. McHenry was shortsighted. It was too risky to just indirectly assist the British. As Jay had prescribed, America had to go to Europe and take the fight directly to France’s shores. This would be a watershed moment in American history; Alexander Hamilton, the first governor of the United States, had held the burden of every one of his actions setting a precedent for future governors to follow, yet none would be quite like this one. America was destined to be actively involved in the world, and for sure every governor following Hamilton would look back to him to deal with their foreign policy. God save America, for there was no turning back now. Outrage Just as Charles Lee was about to strike at the heart of the Friendly Tribune and make an example of their leaders, Hamilton requested a meeting with him. Happy to finally be in contact with someone else in the executive branch, he complied and met with the governor. Hamilton met with Lee regarding public order; sending troops abroad was highly unpopular. Even the newspapers which usually backed Hamilton even in his darkest times were questioning the wisdom of sending troops across the sea. What business would America have fighting in Europe? It made sense to punish the French and their allies in Madrid for their misdeeds and to seize their North American holdings, but there was no land to gain in Europe. The land there was not to colonize, for it was the homeland of colonizers. Hamilton had a simple request for Lee: don’t let the newspapers know a thing about the war in Europe. If anything bad happened, even if it was small, the newspapers would go nuts over it, and the people would follow. Hamilton specifically requested that the Security Act be invoked as soon as any newspaper started speaking up, and that the use of National Marshals against such papers be liberal. “The papers are your enemy, the papers are your enemy. The isolationists are your enemy, the pacifists are your enemy, the pacifists are your enemy. Write that in your journal 100 times.” was what Lee was told by Hamilton. So, with gusto, he got to work keeping every goddamn paper in-line. Unfortunately for Hamilton, it wasn’t just the public he had to worry about, as he had to now contend with the sole cabinet member who opposed his decision: Secretary of War James McHenry. This was inevitable. If he sided with McHenry, he’d have to confront Jay. Regardless, he had to get McHenry to support this since waging a war was going to be difficult without the secretary of war supporting said war. The meeting was brief, as McHenry’s opposition stemmed less from the idea of sending troops to Europe and more so because he believed that it wasn’t winnable and also that the troops would be better off pacifying the newly-occupied territories. Hamilton reassured him of victory being possible, citing the army’s size swelling to almost 6-digits from its already massive size of 80,000 at the war’s start. Furthermore, Hamilton reminded McHenry of the Security Act’s potency in dealing with uppity non-citizens and Attorney General Lee’s efficiency in enforcing the act. National Marshals would be fine enough to secure the territories while the bulk of the army was in Europe, though a small force would be left behind to deal with it. It seemed the meeting was over, but McHenry had one last concern to mention, on behalf of Secretary of Finance Wolcott, who had been frequently absent for “personal reasons” since the passage of the Fourteen Points. The problem was that of funding such an operation. Funding was generally fine for most of the war due to the Economic Reorganization Act, but fighting such a war in Europe was risky from a fiscal perspective. Hamilton reassured McHenry that he had a plan in mind just in case the money ran dry, though he wouldn’t elaborate. Satisfied, the meeting ended, and Hamilton got to speaking with Britain over the Jay Plan. Cooperation For once, William Grenville would see the governor himself, as opposed to John Jay. He could only hope that whatever happened here would leave a good impression; he had high expectations for such a man like Hamilton. Though, he knew little about why this meeting was called on such short notice, and why Hamilton himself was even there to begin with. So, the meeting began. Hamilton first began to ask questions about what was going on regarding the European theater. Grenville answered by bringing up the two main campaigns: the slightly successful campaign in Holland, and the stalemating campaign in Italy and Switzerland. The former was only successful due to the arrival of Prussian forces, which had been turning the tide of war, while the latter was a stalemate due to mountainous terrain making offensives nearly impossible against the might of the French Army. The Battle of Novi, which resulted in a victory for Austro-Prussian forces in Italy. With that now known, Hamilton informed Grenville of his intention to send American troops over to Europe in order to assist in putting down the French Republic. Furthermore, to surely get Grenville’s approval, he even claimed he intended to go himself. This completely stunned Grenville. Though he knew that Hamilton had a preference for Britain over France, he was still a revolutionary, and him outright planning to send troops across the Atlantic to put one down seemed completely backwards. Still, help was help, and so he happily informed Hamilton that such action would be appreciated. Of course, the devil was always in the details. The American Army was an extremely large army. If there was one similarity between America and France, it was that they both practiced levée en masse. With all of those troops, lots of food, ammunition, and other supplies were going to be needed to keep them supplied enough to fight. Hamilton acknowledged that he could only give them so many supplies. The bulk of their supplies once they arrived would have to be from Britain and other nations in the Coalition. Wanting nothing more than the final destruction of the French Revolution, Grenville promised logistical support for the troops. Viewing the meeting as successful, the two ended it there. Hamilton was set to take an unprecedented action; America was going to fight across the sea. Such an action had untold rewards, but doing so possessed unbelievable risks. If anyone could prevail, however, it would be Hamilton. Leaked American troops had landed in Europe, ready to fight. The journey took a bit longer than expected; the seas were rougher than usual, but they still made it. This was it. This was the twilight of the French Revolution. Unfortunately, back at home, the press caught wind of the staggering number of America’s men landing in Europe. While nothing bad had happened to them yet, Hamilton had underestimated just how much the public opposed any action in Europe. Despite the best efforts of Attorney General Lee, the press was able to make hay with this. Particularly, that damned Friendly Tribune, right before its final shutdown after Lee had discovered its headquarters in the basement of a building that was supposed to be for textile manufacturing. The whole damn place was run by Quakers. Lee felt incredibly stupid for not making the blatantly obvious connection earlier. Regardless, the newspaper was destroyed in one fell swoop, and those who worked for it were subsequently arrested and convicted. But this wasn’t going to be the end of it. Absolutely not. The news was out there. Shutting down the papers wouldn’t make that any less true. Already, people were visibly angry about it. Protests began popping up in Philadelphia, and Quakers were running amok denouncing the intervention in Europe. Lee had failed his one job, God help him. Timing What a disaster. Hamilton was all the way in Europe fighting, the people had just gotten wind of the highly unpopular direct intervention, and worst of all, it was election season. Whether Hamilton forgot or simply didn’t care was up in the air. Regardless, for the first time since the Whiskey Rebellion, Hamilton’s allies felt like they would lose. The National Party was very divided on the direct intervention. They were already divided on the matter of war to begin with; passing the Mobilization Act was no easy feat. But taking the fight to Europe? Many in the party had privately found Hamilton to be insufferable, and a small few in the Assembly began to openly criticize the war. Senate President Pinckney, who acted as governor in Hamilton’s absence, could only thank God that the Senate Nationals had more party discipline. The Country Party, on the other hand, was vehemently opposed to the war from day one. They saw it as completely ridiculous and counterproductive considering they were a revolutionary nation; what kind of revolutionary nation fights other revolutionary nations? The initial war in North America swayed some of them and the anti-war public into supporting it due to the successes, but war in Europe was insane. Yet this war was so controversial, that it broke the two-party system. The Quakers, who found no home in either party due to their opposition to mobilization and war as a whole, which made the National Party unfit for them, and their opposition to slavery and Revolutionary France’s worst excesses made the Country Party unfit for them. So, under the leadership of famed abolitionist Elias Hicks, a new party was born from the ideals of the Quakers: the Friendship Party. Elias Hicks, Quaker, abolitionist, and founder of the Friendship Party. THE 1800 UNITED STATES ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS National Party The cockade of the National Party. The National Party stands as the nation’s dominant party. With a supermajority in the Assembly and a working supermajority in the Senate, the nation bows to the whims of the party; more often than not the wishes of Governor Hamilton. The Nationals support Hamilton’s entire domestic program of the Fourteen Points, high tariffs, internal improvements, and defending the Bank. The party, however, stands in its most divided state since the Whiskey Rebellion. With many members already skeptical of the Mobilization Act and the prospect of war with France, Hamilton’s decision to personally lead American troops into Europe has caused factionalism to once more present itself in the party, with a noticeable chunk of the party opposing such action. The Louisianans are the less dominant, more moderate faction of the party, headed by Massachusetts Governor John Adams. While still remaining mostly loyal to Governor Hamilton, they do hold some opposition to his domestic policies, most notably the levée en masse provision of the Mobilization Act. Most notably, however, is their opposition to Hamilton’s current foreign policy. The Louisianans are highly opposed to directly intervening in Europe, believing that consolidating the newly conquered territories, most notably Louisiana, is much more beneficial to the nation than recklessly sending American troops overseas, instead favoring indirectly supporting the Coalition through giving arms and loans. The Rejuvenationists are the current dominant faction of the party, and are obstinately loyal to Governor Hamilton. Headed by Senate President Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, they dance to the tune of Hamilton’s every word as they lend their support towards his complete domestic agenda alongside supporting rigorous enforcement of the Mobilization Act’s levée en masse provision. On foreign policy, they believe in continuing the war until the French Revolution is fully stamped out, in order to destroy the threat of Jacobinism one and for all and rejuvenate America’s standing in the global community. Most controversially, some radicals in the faction have even proposed a postwar military alliance with Britain in order to ensure a maintenance of the postwar order. Country Party The cockade of the Country Party. The Country Party has, for most of its history so far, been a joke of a party. Opposing Hamilton’s popular agenda and being dominated by radicals alienated many voters, resulting in it never finding a true mandate in the Assembly. However, with Hamilton’s direct intervention in Europe causing the greatest uproar against the governor since the Whiskey Rebellion, the party may finally find a chance to win. Opposing Hamilton’s domestic agenda, the party calls for a reduction in tariffs, an end to the whiskey tax, and an exit from the war paired with an immediate repeal of the Mobilization Act. However, the party still holds factions, with radicals calling for an end to national internal improvement programs, the bank, and even the standing army, while moderates wish to see a continuation of internal improvements, a reduction in the power of the bank, and the maintenance of a voluntary standing army. The Normalists are the moderates, headed by Assembly Minority Leader DeWitt Clinton. Calling for a return to normalcy from the turbulent rule of the National Party, the Normalists call for an immediate peace, a repeal of the Security Act, a reduction in tariffs and the whiskey tax, and the pursuit of American neutrality. However, unlike their more radical counterparts, they still believe in national internal improvement programs and only weakening the Bank. Furthermore, they don’t believe in abolishing the standing army, viewing it to be necessary to fight both domestic and foreign threats to national sovereignty. The Brumaireians are the radicals, headed by former Assembly Minority Leader Thomas Paine. The Brumaireians support a peace treaty with France and Spain containing compensation for the conquered territories, and an issuing of arms shipments and loans to Revolutionary France, viewing them as fellow revolutionaries fighting a fight not so different from America’s own decades prior. On domestic affairs, they favor a complete repeal of the entire Fourteen Points and the Mobilization Act, alongside abolishing the Bank, national internal improvements, the whiskey tax, all protective tariffs, and the standing army, viewing them all as threats to liberty and proof of the urban class conspiring to dominate the common farmer. Friendship Party *Note: This is a write-in option only.* The cockade of the Friendship Party. The newest party to join the American political scene, the oddly named Friendship Party seeks to further the interests of the Quaker cause, and especially the cause of pacifism. Headed by famed abolitionist Elias Hicks, the party seeks to combine various ideas from both parties paired with abolitionism. They take from the National Party’s disdain for Revolutionary France and their high support for merchants. They take from the Country Party’s support for peace and their opposition to the Mobilization Act, the Security Act, and the standing army. Their syncretic ideals are further represented by their notable members, with Moses Brown representing the merchants, William Savery representing the pro-Indian rights activists, and Robert Pleasants representing the rural folk. However, due to the party’s affiliation with a small religious group, their hardline pacifism and abolitionism, and the fact that they’ve only just formed, the party is not even known to most voters, and is not projected to get many, if any seats. Furthermore, Quakers are mostly based in the Mid-Atlantic, and consequently, the Friendship Party is only able to run candidates in that area, with all of the candidates requiring write-ins due to not being included on the ballot. Angelico manages to hold his own for 14 minutes as he avoids any major damage from Miro. suggestmeabook looking to finish someone else's DNF (not sure if it's ok to link it, just see my post history if you want to see it) and promised to post my thoughts here when I was done, so here goes (the gist and a few other things first, then more specific opinions and minor spoilers later, below the gray line...)
The DNF I chose was
Defending Jacob by William Landay. It sucked. One star. Maybe two. 😐
I do feel like I gained at least one interesting insight from the experience, however, which is this: I read it in 5 days, which is somewhat faster than my usual pace, and it made me realize something I hadn't before: The more immersed I am in a story, the longer it takes me to read it.
You see, I normally find it very easy to 'suspend my disbelief' and really get into a story, to see it play out in my imagination, acting each character's part, visualizing the environment, etc... And this slows down my 'words per minute' rate, sure -- and I've known that for a long time, and I'm fine with it -- but I now know there's much more to it than just that: I'm also a lot more hesitant to start or continue reading when I know it's going to require a certain amount of my attention and investment, and that slows me down as much if not more than just my WPM rate...
For example, when I'm reading something like
The Expanse (which I'm currently in the middle of), each book is (more or less) like a season of television, and each chapter is (again, more or less) like a full episode, where the chapter not only has its own story to tell but it also often has to advance the larger plot by at least an increment or two as well... And with all that going on, it's just that much harder to simply start the next chapter right after the last one, or pick the book up at the end of the day, when I'm maybe just a little to tired/drained to really get back into the whole thing just then...
With
Defending Jacob, however, I ended-up getting booted out of the narrative and back into reality a few different times early on (and throughout, see more below), and what I found was that after that point, moving from chapter to chapter or returning to the book after a break was easier than it normally is...
So, basically it's this: I've seen people here talk about "book hangovers", and I've certainly had those, but I now realize that I can also get smaller "chapter hangovers", and while I'm not really willing to sacrifice my vivid imagination for some improvement in my WPM reading speed, I would very much like to find a way to minimize or eliminate these "chapter hangovers" if possible... Because reading slowly but enjoying it is one thing; but preventing myself from reading at all, at least some of the time when I
could be reading, is a whole other thing entirely...
Ok, with that said, stop now if you don't want to be further influenced by my opinions of this book, and/or encounter any spoilers...
So, first I'll talk about the writing itself, because I've already alluded to it above... And maybe I'm just being nit-picky, but there were several times when the whole narrative just fell apart for me, causing me to abruptly 'un-suspend my disbelief' as it were, kicking me right out of the story entirely...
My first example, one of several of the most minor and nit-picky offenses:
Wendy said, "Did any of you know Ben?" She meant Ben Rifkin, the murder victim.
Oh? Oh!! Right, yes, thank you narrator! Because by Chapter 3 I had already forgotten absolutely every detail about the murder, the only event that had really taken place up to that point... 🙄 I mean, ok, to be fair, he does follow that up immediately with the following, but still, that line... I just couldn't hardly take anything seriously after that...
They had not known him. Calling him by his first name was just a way of adopting him.
Ok, so, next up is a slightly more defensible example IMO... This is the day of Jacob's arraignment in Chapter 9...
When the clerk called Jacob's case...[he] was ushered in by two court officers from the lockup and made to stand in the middle of the courtroom, in front of the jury box....Jonathan passed through the swinging gate in the bar, laid his briefcase on the defense table, and took a position beside Jacob...to make a point...I am not simply a hired gun doing my professional duty for a distasteful client. I believe in this kid.
Now, as I said above, I tend to imagine scenes very fully and vividly in my head, so in my mind these two, the defendant and his lawyer, are standing shoulder-to-shoulder in a shared, steadfast solidarity, and there is zero indication otherwise until this, only a page or two later:
The suggestion of a sneaky trick pulled Jonathan to his feet.
To his feet? When did he sit down?? When did he decide to abandon this grand united front he had so thoroughly established with his client and go take a load off?? This is only 16 paragraphs later mind you, 6 of which are single lines of dialog, with no scene breaks, and the author even states that the prosecution "recited the facts of the case, already familiar to everyone...with a minimum of embellishment" (emphasis mine)... So you're saying he didn't draw it out? Didn't grandstand? And since everyone was already familiar with the case he simply listed only bullet points without tons of supporting detail, etc? So we're talking minutes here, right, not hours?? Because that's what you led me to believe.
I mean, I know I'm being a bit harsh here, I know! But I can't help that this genuinely threw me for a loop, to the point where I had to re-read back a page or two just to make sure I hadn't zoned-out and missed a bunch of important stuff or whatever...
Alright, anyway, now for my final example we'll jump way ahead to the first day of the trial in Chapter 25... This is easily the most egregious offense, again at least IMO...
In Middlesex County, judges were ostensibly assigned to trials at random. No one actually believed such a lottery existed. The same few judges were assigned high-profile cases over and over...So it came as no surprise that the judge assigned to Jacob's trial was Burton French.
Yeah, no shit it wasn't a surprise: The arraignment judge already said that she had chosen him back in Chapter 9!!
"I'm sending this case out to Judge French for trial," [Judge] Rivera said with finality.
So firstly, saying that it's "no surprise" now when, yeah, it's literally no surprise which judge it was going to be -- regardless of the reason why it's that judge -- is just... it's... guuuuh 🙄
But secondly, where was all this talk about randomness and rotation queues or whatever back in Chapter 9, when the assignment was being made to begin with?! I've never so quickly started flipping back to find wherever I knew something had been said before... I thought I'd had a stroke or there was a glitch in the Matrix or something...
Ok, so that's the end of me harping on the author. Now I want to finish by discussing the story itself a bit, though I don't have much room left (before I hit Reddit's post character limit...)
I find that I only now know what the story was, after the fact. It was actually two stories: The murder thriller is one, and the other is a story about a seemingly empty man who is incapable of any kind of real human connection whatsoever, and the ways that his emptiness destroys himself and his family. I was so not expecting the second one at all, and for most of the book it was so non-obvious that it made the writing seem just godawful, but let me explain...
First, the murder thriller: It was fine, but I knew what the end would look like, in broad strokes, from early on. This isn't a brag; I don't believe I'm getting any smarty-pants points for saying this; it's just true. The clues that the grand jury trial which opens the book probably wasn't about the actual murder but something else, likely after, were just a little too obvious to anyone paying even half attention (and as you can see from all of the above, I'm paying pretty close attention). And it wasn't hard, then, to guess what form(s) the aftermath of the murder trial itself might take...
Secondly, and I'll have to summarize here, because I'm quickly running out of room: For a good long while the characters all seemed pretty devoid of, you know, character, and it was making the book fall rather flat... But I now understand (at least I think I do) retrospectively that that's because the MC Andy Barber (the father) just doesn't give a crap at all about other people, and it's from his POV that you're seeing them all. And if this was intentional, then I do have to give credit where credit is due: While I absolutely think that narrative could have been made more apparent earlier on, to really surface that complete lack of empathy and give better context to his narrator's voice, it was still a good and fairly complex character study, even if I can only see it in hindsight...
FWIW, I'm now three episodes into the TV miniseries, and so far they're sticking real close to the source material... But there was a scene in this last episode where Andy goes to ask his detective buddy for a favor, and this is the exchange:
"I'm asking you as a friend. All I need is his file."
"A Friend?"
"What?"
"Come on man, we work together, it's not like we ever hung out. The first time I set foot in your house was with a warrant."
"Wow. That's... I always thought we were friends; I'm sorry you didn't feel the same way."
"Look, don't get me wrong, you're a good guy, but if this is what you think an actual friendship is, it's you I feel sorry for."
I don't remember this from the book -- and can't find it now -- but it does a great job of cluing you in to Andy's total lack of empathy in a way that I can't remember ever getting from the book... And I wish I'd had it then, so I'd've known it was intentional and not just bad characterization...

2023.06.03 00:06 lautaromassimino Fixing Netflix "Elite" (season 4-6). [English].
Seasons 1, 2 & 3's rewrite: https://www.reddit.com/EliteNetflix/comments/13yr0za/fixing_netflix_elite_season_13_english/ \***************************************************************************************************************************)
S4. Attempted assassination of Rebeka Bermujo Ávalos: “A very strict principal and four new students arrive at Las Encinas who attack with love entanglements, serious rumors and a mystery that has just come out of the oven”. Season 4 Characters List: - Samuel García Dominguez.
- Guzmán Nunier Osuna.
- Valerio Montesinos Rojas.
- Rebeka Parilla.
- Cayetana Grajera Pando.
- Christian Varela Expósito (recurrent).
- Nadia Shanaa (guest).
- Felipe Rosón Caleruega.
- Patrick Blanco Benavent.
- Ariadna Blanco Benavent.
- Mencía Blanco Benavent.
- Benjamín Blanco.
- Armando de la Ossa.
- This season is probably going to be another one of the longest in terms of changes, as I feel like it was the worst of the six we've had so far, which is a huge mistake given all the big departues we've had in S3. The success of this season was something important because it meant the interest of the old fans for future seasons.
- The mistake of this season, I feel, was using the arrival of the new cast to completely divert the focus of attention from what had been the plot of the story (Marina's murder, which led to Polo's murder). The story of this season should have followed the consequences of Polo's death for our characters, the weight of the pact of silence regarding Lu, and the non-hypersexualized harmony that the first three seasons had between the characters.
- In this sense, it would make both this season and S5 keep the same vibes that they presented to us for season 6, first of all, lowering the morbidity and unnecessary sex scenes that we had since this season, creating more cohesion in the "individuality ” of the student uniforms, and creating an environment of more togetherness between characters, rather than many separate stories coming together at the end.
- In addition, from this season several things about the school itself raised in previous seasons seem to have been forgotten just like that:
- Las Encinas is a bilingual school, but we never see another teacher speaking English (French in the English dubbing) again.
- The school competition with the Ivy League prize that Nadia and Lu compete for during the first three seasons is not mentioned again, when it is supposed to be something that is done every single year.
- In addition, from this season almost all the scenes are located almost exclusively inside the school, and we see very little about outdoor scenes, or the private lives of the characters. This is also a serious mistake, since that was what best allowed us to know each other's backgrounds, and create empathy with them.
Season 4 Scoop: Ari, Patrick and Mencía: - We would find out that they are adopted children of Benjamin: they introduce us to their family in the midst of an experimentation of great anguish, why not add another factor? Also, I feel like it works because none of them look much alike physically, nor do they seem to fully connect with each other (we were led to believe that Patrick and Ari were twins, when their relationship is more toxic than many Elite romantic couples).
- The three of them would enter the third year, that is, a course below the one that Samuel & company are repeating (making Patrick and Ari two years younger than them, and Mencía three, since they originally tell us that she is one year ahead, together to her siblings).
Benjamín Blanco: The father of the new trio, and the new principal in Las Encinas, after Azucena's dismissal. In the middle of the season, we find out that
he is actually Polo's uncle (his late wife was Begoña Benavent's sister).
The compound last name of his children is Blanco Benavent, instead of Blanco Commerford.
- Benjamín would have come to Madrid to help his sister-in-law regarding her son's trial, and to try to obtain information about this, by infiltrating the school, since apparently, despite Christian's guilty plea, there does not seem to have been direct evidence implicating him as the killer, beyond the romantic bond he shared with Polo, so police say it's quite possible he'll be released for lack of evidence.
- They tell us that Benjamin asked his three children for "help" to try to find out what really happened with Polo. However, Ari is the only one who accepted his request for help. Patrick and Mencía try to act as if that doesn't happen. Neither of the three mentions that Polo was their cousin.
- This means that Benjamin and Ari would act as the main antagonists of the season, with the other two siblings being indirect antagonists.
Felipe Rosón Caleruega: - Felipe is Carla's (almost unknown) younger brother whom we would have finally met briefly during her graduation the previous season. Apparently, he had spent all those years attending a sister private school of Las Encinas located in Argentina, called Las Cumbres, and when we got to know him properly this season we would discover that it was not his idea to return to live in Madrid, but rather a decision made by his parents. We would later learn that he had actually been expelled from his last school, and that there is something about his past in Argentina that he is trying to keep secret.
- Between the middle of the season it's revealed that Felipe's "dark past" is based on having anger management problems: a video is revealed in which he is seen together with a group of students attacking another boy. They tell us that there is a heavy complaint against him, and the case is still on trial, and only thanks to the influence of his parents was he able to avoid being arrested.
- It's revealed that he's bisexual, and we're shown that he starts having some kind of secret crush on Patrick, both of them having this whole homoerotic friendship thing.
- This character would become related to the second main plot of this season, which in the future would become the main plot for later seasons:
⠀⠀⠀ →
We know that his father, Teodoro Rosón, after the end of Season 3 became the sole owner of the old company that he co-directed with Ventura Nunier (Guzmán's father) who was arrested at the end of S1 for embezzlement towards the School of San Esteban (the school from which Samu, Nadia and Christian received scholarships at the beginning of S1, after its collapse). ⠀⠀⠀ →
We now learn that Teodoro plans to rebuild a Public School again on top of the ruins of San Esteban, this time by "legal means" to avoid the same fate as Ventura, but still solely for the economic purposes that would result from such construction, and a new scholarship program that this new school would have with Las Encinas. ⠀⠀⠀ →
During the next season, the construction of this new institution would have finished, and we would have new scholarship recipients in Las Encinas, coming from this new school. This would be part of the "reboot" that the next generation would mean for Elite. - Felipe's character would be a direct reinvention of Philippe von Triesenberg's character, which would mean that said character is completely removed from the series script.
- The reason behind his origin as Carla's younger brother arises to create a kind of instant empathy with him, based on his connection with whom was one of our queens for three years.
Rebeka (not Ari) is the main victim of the season: - One of the biggest misses of the season was making one of the new guys the victim; especially Ari, who among the three, was the one that generated the least empathy in the public. Without changing the original story too much, seeing from the first episode that Rebeka's life is in danger would have aroused much more interest among the entire audience.
- As originally, Rebeka would end up in the hospital because of Armando, after having found out what Mencía was going through all season, and having confronted him to defend her. It's the same story that Ari had, but in a much more interesting and functional way.
Love triangle Samuel/Ari/Guzmán: It never happens.
- It was a pretty dire plot that only increased the public's hatred towards Ari for having separated Nadia and Guzmán, and for being the reason for the loss of all the development that Guzmán and Samu's relationship had had for three seasons.
- Instead, only Samuel remains her love interest, setting up that possible future "fatheson" connection between him and Benjamin.
- Guzmán, for his side, would continue to have a long-distance love relationship with Nadia through video calls, and towards the end of the season, she surprises him with a visit to Madrid.
⠀⠀⠀ → Samuel and Ari's relationship would not be there just as one more of the season, but would serve as an element for the plot:
Ari would have approached Samuel after learning that he was Christian's close friend (the accused in Polo's murder) to try to obtain information.
However, her feelings towards him would become true over the course of the season, thus seeing a kind of development in her character, which would allow the public to empathize with her. Guzmán & Mencía: Both become close friends, based on how much Guzmán would see Marina in Mencía
[For those who didn't know, Mencía was written as a reformulation of Marina's character, adapted to the needs of the new environment with this "new gen"]. As mentioned before,
Philippe's character is eliminated as a new character: his plot was something very delicate that I think was not handled well, and in the future it would be remedied with the entry and development of Isadora's story.
With Philippe gone, Cayetana's as his love interest is eliminated.
- After everything that happened with Polo the previous season, Cayetana is at a point in her life where she is not capable of being in another relationship. Her plot remains only in the way that she wants to change her future and focus on her design career, perhaps having aftermath of everything that happened with Polo, making her start having anxiety attacks (but treating the subject delicately, with her beginning to see a specialist by Rebe's obligation).
- We would see how Caye tries to seek support from Valerio, because of "Polo's issue" and the connection that Valerio also had with him, but she is frustrated when she realizes that Valerio seems to have coped with all this issue through the use of drugs. Another possible plot for her would be her attempt to help him (parallels to her original attempt to help Philippe).
- Cayetana would be an easy second target for Ari, in her attempt to find information about Polo for her father. However, she would not achieve much due to the gap between them throughout the season.
Patrick + Valerio: - "Replacement" for Ander-Patrick-Omar's idea, without the drama and toxicity that this trio represented. Ander and Omar are gone. Valerio and Patrick? Both are wild partiers with drug-abusing tendencies. Let's match them up and watch them explode and burn, because that would be very funny.
- Later it could be revealed (or not) that Patrick would have approached Valerio at Ari's request, to try to obtain some information regarding Polo's case, at the insistence of their father.
Christian subplot: - Following the story line proposed at the end of S3, Christian would be in prison for a large part of this fourth season, whether it was due to a nefarious action by the justice system, or by his own plea to defend Lu and "pay" for his silence regarding Marina's death. The scenes with him are based on visits given to him by Samuel, or even perhaps Guzmán, in prison.
- His permanence this season would be used to generate tension for the public, especially since (as mentioned at the beginning), the police would end up releasing him, due to lack of evidence against him. Let's say they take his statement as a result of the alcohol he drank at the party.
- It is his potential (and definitive) release from prison, which causes the arrival of the Benjamins in Madrid, with Benjamin trying to seek justice for the family of his dead wife.
Valerio's possible death?: - Yes, it would be something tragic. And I'm trying to avoid this whole "one character death per season" thing. But (in a way) it's something that might make sense: Valerio dies of an overdose, "completing circle" in his drug addiction plot, but not forcing murder into the season.
- Yet at the same time it might seem like too much for audiences (since, remember, we would have waited all season to see whether or not we would eventually lose Rebeka, and whether or not Christian would finally get out of prison. Keep them only to lose him, it could be a little too much).
- Whether or not he died, Valerio would leave the school at the end of this season (another viable option for his departure could be, perhaps, by Patrick's action after Valerio's possible overdose, using Benjamin's influence to get him help at a clinic, similar to Christian's original ending, but this time out of Patrick's honest concern for Valerio, and not out of wanting to "get him out of his way").
Armando's fate: - HE IS NOT KILLED BY GUZMÁN. Seriously, how did the writers come up with the idea that the character we met SEEKING JUSTICE FOR THE CRIME AGAINST HIS SISTER would become the new criminal face, not facing the consequences and ending his story with him running away to avoid charges? Just... no!!
- Armando is imprisoned: During the last episode we see Mencía crying in the hospital, blaming herself for the possibility of losing Rebe because of her. She finally comes clean; Not with her father, not with Ari, not with Patrick... but with Guzmán. Guzmán is the only person she trusts enough to admit the truth about Armando. Just at that moment, Rebeka wakes up. The rest is simply a competent action on the part of justice.
Guzmán drops out of school: At the end of the season, we see how he decides to join Nadia in the US.
- It's reveal that he feels guilty for getting away from everyone, especially because of what he has just discovered about Mencía. Her “brotherly instinct” tells him that he must stay to protect her, but in the end they show us a scene of both saying goodbye to each other in peace, and Mencía crying, thanking him for having put Armando in jail.
- There would be a farewell scene between him and Samuel, closing their plot as "brothers".
Outcome of Ari-Samuel Subplot, linked to Polo: - At some point near the season finale, Samuel would learn of Ari's and her family's connection to Polo's family, and the real reasons she had reached out to him. He would break up with her right then.
- Ari finally confesses the rest of the story, filling in the puzzle pieces that Samuel was missing. He claims that it hadn't all been fake, not for her: she had really fallen for him.
- As a possible redemption ending for the character, Ari vows not to tell her father about the truth after Polo's death, guided by the love she had come to feel for Samuel.
\***************************************************************************************************************************)
T5. Murder of Samuel Garcia Dominguez: "Another semester begins in Las Encinas that brings new love triangles, new students, new rules... and a new crime that leaves everyone baffled".
Season 5 Characters List: - Samuel García Dominguez.
- Rebeka Parilla.
- Cayetana Grajera Pando.
- Felipe Rosón Caleruega.
- Patrick Blanco Benavent.
- Ariadna Blanco Benavent.
- Mencía Blanco Benavent.
- Isadora Artiñán.
- Iván Carvalho.
- Cruz Carvalho.
- Benjamín Blanco.
Isadora & Iván's arrival: Elite timeline is confusing because Season 1 is supposed to pertain to an individual school year. Seasons 2 and 3 belong to two semesters of the same year, just like seasons 4 and 5. This would mean that Isadora and Iván would be entering Las Encinas in the middle of the semester, without any explanation. We could remedy this by giving them a simple explanation that would, incidentally, unite the two of them like the best friends S6 would have us believe they are, when we've barely seen too many interactions between them:
- Isa and Iván are exchange students: they both already knew each other, since they came from the very same private school in Argentina as Felipe.
- They enter the same course as Patrick, Ari, Mencía and Felipe, that is: they are also two years younger than Samuel & Co.
Patrick/Ari/Ivan triangle: It never happens. - Let's stop poisoning the Blancos so much. Enough with the whole Ivan/Patrick/Cruz thing.
Love triangle, Patrick-Felipe-Iván: - Created to compensate for the cuts I made in season 4 with AndePatrick/Omar, with Samuel/Ari/Guzmán, and this season, with Patrick/Ari/Iván. The three of them would have a possible temporary dynamic, initiated by Patrick despite the fact that Ivan and Felipe were in the closet at the time.
We would be introduced, in a secondary way, to some of the new characters of season 6 (in a similar way to how S6 gave us a first introduction to Sonia, a character signed as main for T7). Among them:
- Bilal, a student belonging to the new public school built by Teo Rosón on the foundations of the old San Esteban.
- Dídac, being seen close to Javier, as one of the JavieHugo/Alex group. He does not participate in the attack on Isadora at the end of the season.
- Nico, having already transitioned, but still not getting the document from him officially identifying him as a man. It is said that his d-name is Nicole (although everyone already calls him Nico). We saw one or two scenes of him close to Isadora and Mencía, before his official presentation in T6.
- Rocío may be another of the people close to the girls, perhaps as a new waitress at the Club del Lago, where she would meet Bilal. In the following season it could be explained that the reason for having been working at the Club was that her father had canceled her credit cards.
Graduation: Samuel and Rebeka officially graduate from Las Encinas, similar to what we saw for the rest of the characters in S3 (but without Valerio and Guzmán, as both would have dropped out in S4).
Samuel death: It would still happen, and it would still be at the hands of
Benjamin. However, the reasons could turn out to be different:
- Ari would have started to move away from her father this season, after the last scene we would have had of her and Samu at the end of S4. She would refuse to continue investigating her classmates and friends for him.
- She and Samu would have ended up the previous season, but they would still somehow not let go of each other. Benjamin realizes this, and begins to suspect that Samuel has something to do with Ari's refusal to want to continue helping him.
- Benjamin would begin to suspect that Samuel had "washed her mind" to Ari to leave the Polo case aside because he himself had been involved, in some way, following the fact of his closeness with Christian, and that he would discover that Samu had been visiting him in prison the previous semester. Benjamín would had been blackmailing Samu for the past few months to give him information about it. Samuel would not have opened his mouth (remember, in S3 a pact of silence was made to protect Lucrecia).
- In a final fit of rage trying to make him confess, Benjamin ends up pushing him into the pool, where Samu hits his head on the edge, bleeding to death.
\***************************************************************************************************************************)
T6. Ivan's accident, and subsequent coma: “After the death of a student, Las Encinas faces a new school year trying to have an image wash by covering up past disasters. The students try to achieve their goals, but will they all reach their goal alive?
Season 6 Characters List: - Felipe Rosón Caleruega.
- Patrick Blanco Benavent.
- Ariadna Blanco Benavent.
- Mencía Blanco Benavent.
- Isadora Artiñán.
- Iván Carvalho.
- Nicolás “Nico” Fernandez.
- Dídac.
- Sara.
- Rocío.
- Raúl.
- Cruz Carvalho.
The season begins three months after the murder of Samuel and the imprisonment of Benjamín Blanco.
- Rebeka graduated from Las Encinas and left Madrid. Also Caye is gone.
- The three Benjamins + Felipe, Isadora & Iván are beginning their last year at Las Encinas. Dídac and Sara are also in the same course as them.
- It would be implied that Nico and Rocío are a junior class.
The events of season 6 happen in a very similar way to what we originally saw, since that season was thought of as a reboot of the show, and it returned to recover all the vibes of the first generation. As I mentioned in the S4 section, at this point the sexual morbidity of the show was greatly reduced, and at all times there was a great feeling of togetherness, even with the new characters (something that, I dare say, we had never had before in Elite, not even with the original gen).
Isadora's plot: - This story remains largely the same, finally getting the justice she had been seeking since the previous season.
- The only thing that would change in this plot is the part of "justice into one's own hand" (referring to the chemical sterilization of heraggressors). And let's see, I UNDERSTAND why, her context of "justice failed me", but I feel that at the script level, the message of the series of "an eye for an eye / fire with fire" is very wrong, ESPECIALLY if at the end she was going to have that closure of justice that the plot and the character deserve.
Cruz Calvalho's plot: the hate crime plot against Cruz is also removed… - I understand that it's a key point in the Season, and honestly when I saw it I did "like it", although I felt a lot of helplessness and pity. But really, Cruz was a character who was SUPER promising for the future, a publicly gay professional footballer? Even today, with all the acceptance that exists, the number of players openly belonging to the LGBTIQ+ community can seriously be counted on the fingers of one hand.
- Cruz's public coming out could mean so many things publicly, and it was going to break an entire status quo… and they just made him die for a hate crime because he is who he is.
- I know that it tries to represent the reality in which we are living, BUT, in the show, the real reason for his death is based on causing a rupture between Patrick and Iván's relationship… so there THAT is my problem: Cruz exposes himself because he knew that Iván and Patrick had something special, that Patrick was important to his son. So simply killing him to make those characters break up? For what, what use would it all have been? Nope…just not.
Relationships of the season, without too many changes: - Patrick and Iván (without the breakup or the toxicity that they originally carried this season): Let's say they had a fight at the end of S6 for x reasons, which did make Iván tell Patrick that he didn't want to see him again. This being Patrick's reason for leaving him while he was in the hospital.
- Isadora and Dídac: Without too many changes. Both belong to two families in charge of hotels, which are competitors in Spain. A possible Romeo & Juliet style posed for S7.
- Rocío and Bilal: Same plot, with him approaching her for the sole reason of getting a benefit from her (for her money).
- Ari and Nico. Same plot.
- Raul and Sara. Same plot.
We would still have the departure of the Blanco siblings for the end, but this time, it would
NOT be having "reconciled" with their father.
- Ari would eventually testify AGAINST him, for Samuel's crime.
- They had come to Las Encinas in search of information about Polo, but only at the request of his father. It was not something that interested them, and they had nothing to continue doing there. In addition, there was the Mencía "thing" with Iván's accident…
- For the first time we would see Ari in the position of a true big sister, taking action to protect her family (as we originally saw). As a symbolic way of Ari's detachment from her father, we see her refusing to be called that way again, since "Ari" was her father's nickname for her. From that day on, she would be Ariadna… not Ariadna Blanco, but with her mother last name... Ariadna Benavent.
Knowing that Iván's character is still signed for S7 (unlike Patrick; this is confirmed by Manu's absence at the beginning of the season recordings), we could achieve a fitting ending for this couple by using a Short Story between Seasons 6 and 7.
\***************************************************************************************************************************)
Anddddddd here it is! My take for a rewrite of this show, which I feel started at the top of everything and gradually went down in quality, although it still has a lot of potential. I'm proud of how all six seasons turned out as a whole, though I still feel like these last three seasons feel a bit incomplete compared to the first ones. So what do you guys think? Would you add or take away something that I added? Did you like the changes? I'm new here, and this is my first real post on reddit, so I'd really appreciate your feedback ^-^ submitted by

I do Yoga to Chief Keef. I order iced matcha with no ice. I use Hello Kitty scissors to cut out my mole. I wash myself with Spiderman shampoo. I melt my left airpod in the dryer. I throw up at Starbucks. I take a shit in the secret toilet in the basement of Parsons. I try to kill my roommate. She’s a rat and that’s no insult but a fact. I have 97 cents in my bank account. I did not realize the rice was extra. I smell like Poison. By Dior. I bring a guy home, I lose my key. I shrug when he calls me crazy. I collect my plucked eyebrows. A bunch of them. Half bleached, half Black, like a garden of thorns in my plastic bag. I stalk my ex on social media. I keep tabs on his mom. I scan my boobs. My electricity gets cut off. I smear period blood on my lips. I sue my neighbor. I smell her piss through the door. I love being goofy, I prefer being strange. I sleep with no cushion and snore like a buzz saw. I order a new Macbook. They give me the wrong keyboard. I could complain, but I’m lazy. I hate to walk, I always sprint. I once joined a marathon on a whim. I was on crutches for 2 weeks. I ghosted my therapist, I owe her money. I replaced her with omegle. I miss him, so I call him. Then I block him. I throw away his paintings. I sell a sweater on Vinted. I give it to a homeless man instead. I tell the buyer that I lost it. I sit in cafes and eavesdrop on boring people talking. They argue about their wedding invites. It’s almost comically disgusting. I go to the movies, I sit in the last row. I throw single popcorn sporadically into the air. I duck, when they stare. I apply to jobs I don’t want and cry when I don’t get them. I complain when I’m broke. I write essays for others. Grades directly correlated to the cash. I hotbox my mothers’s bathroom. I let him eat my boogers. I call it love. I add two zeros to my 1%. That makes me a 100. I dye my dog’s hair blue. I match my own. I am swag on steroids embodied. Side effects included. I will crash, but make it suave. My friend tells me she feels like me for once “ Like a magnetic bull on dope”. I laugh, but I don’t think it's funny. Full Speed, I turn Chief Keef off. Pull up Beethoven. Let me get my Zen on.

2023.06.02 23:24 TaeminJung Solo nightlife and socialising Paris?
Hi guys! I have a question regarding Parisian night-life as a solo traveller.
I(m22, korean) started my first solo travelling two days ago in London. London was fine as I made friends at the hostel and I obviously speak english. I made lots of friends through my hostel and also hung out with locals. At least in london, everyone is just chill with a beer.
But in Paris it is very difficult to find a place to go to and if I walk into a place idk what im doing in there. As of writing this, i am awkwardly sitting in a random Paris baclub and made zero friends. Is it ok to walk up to people and be friendly in english? My french is terrible, so that is hopeless.
I really want to hang out with people around my age that i can connect with!
Are there any student's bars or other solo travellers bars in paris? If so, I'd love your ecommendations.
Plus, any kind of baclub etiquette for Paris would be greatly appreciated!!
Ill be in Berlin and Munich next weeks, hopefully they go better.

2023.06.02 21:50 Forsaken-Artist-4317 Princess Mononoke and collapse
Princess Mononoke, is a master piece of the art and one of my all time favorite movies. And you should watch it.
I searched the sub for post about this movie, and only found a single one, and it deserves more discussion.
Here is the
Wikipedia for it.
The first time you watch it, just enjoy it. Go do that now. If you've never seen it, I envy you that you get to watch it for the first time. Make an event of it. Turn off the lights. Get some popcorn. And then come back and read the rest of my post.
Ok, good. Welcome back. Seriously, though, just bookmark this post and come back to it later.
Now that you've seen the movie, and if you're like me, you've seen it a dozen times, lets talk about how it relates to collapse.
There is the obvious theme of humans vs. nature, leading to leading to ultimately destruction of Iron Town. The wikipedia page does a great job, so I'll just copy and paste it here:
Environment
A central theme of Princess Mononoke is the environment.[29] The film centers on the adventure of Ashitaka as he journeys to the west to undo a fatal curse inflicted upon him by Nago, a boar turned into a demon by Eboshi.[30] Michelle J. Smith and Elizabeth Parsons said that the film "makes heroes of outsiders in all identity politics categories and blurs the stereotypes that usually define such characters". In the case of the deer god's destruction of the forest and Tataraba, Smith and Parsons said that the "supernatural forces of destruction are unleashed by humans greedily consuming natural resources".[31] They also characterized Eboshi as a businesswoman who has a desire to make money at the expense of the forest, and also cite Eboshi's intention to destroy the forest to mine the mountain "embodies environmentalist evil".[30] Deirdre M. Pike writes that Princess Mononoke is simultaneously part of nature and part of the problem.[32] Mononoke represents the connection between the environment and humans, but also demonstrates that there is an imbalance in power between the two.[32]
The main thing that I want to talk about is how inevitable the plot of the movie is, and how one could easy remove any of the characters, or have them die earlier in the movie, and the outcome of the movie would be the same. Maybe delayed a few years, but ultimately, the deer god's destruction at the hand of the humans is all but guaranteed.
Ashitaka is the main character and acts as our point of view character for the events in the movie. But what if he was killed by Nago in the opening of the movie, and then the movie just kept going?
Well, we would be treated to beautiful landscapes as the camera heads west. And then we get to the village where some humans are killing other humans. Ashitaka isn't there to save anyone, and the hunter doesn't see his skills or curse, and so continues to Iron Town without him.
Ashitaka isn't there to save the Ox driver, and the camera just passes thru the forest. We get Iron Town, and without Ashitaka we miss out on a lot of the exposition of the characters that they would have explained to him. But Princess Mononoke still attacks Iron Town in the attempt to kill Lady Eboshi. Here, it seems the most likely case is that she is killed by the villagers. Eboshi and the villages seemed to have it pretty under control.
So now both of the main characters in the movie are dead, but the movie keeps going. The Hunters and Eboshi still plan to kill the Deer God, and now without Ashitaka and Princess Mononoke, the task is that much easier. The Deer God's head is stolen, and then, well, depending on how all that actually works, the Emperor is granted Immortality, The End, or how I imagine it, they aren't able to escape the Death God's wrath and ultimately Iron Town is destroyed in much the same way as in the movie. The Death God wipes it off the face of the earth.
But we can just stop once they kill the Deer God, as that's the metaphor of environmental destruction that I'm concerned about.
But what if Princess Mononoke had succeeded in killing Eboshi when she attacked the village? Would that have saved the Deer God? Well, no. We know that other humans know about the iron underneath the forest. They attack Iron Town while Eboshi is attempting to kill the Deer God. So even if Princess Mononoke had killed every single human in Iron Town, more humans would have come for the Iron. Endlessly.
Eboshi's death wouldn't have even prevented the death of the Deer God. Sure, in the movie she is the one that pulls the trigger, but any number of the hunters could have just as easily made that shot. A few of them were superstitious about it, but most were completely Ok with the act, and could just as easily pulled the trigger.
Same with Jigo character and his hunters. The Emperor wants the head of the Deer God, and put out a bounty for its head. That means anyone and everyone, for miles and miles around, would come and try to kill the Deer God. Inside of the movie, his death would have likely delayed the death of the Deer God the most, but ultimately, he is just one of endless mercenaries. Even the death of the Emperor wouldn't have saved the Deer God for long, as well know that Eboshi was mainly killing it so that she could get to the iron underneath the forest.
Ok, so what?
Well, as you can see, I think about this movie A LOT, and have basically come to view it as a true story. Obviously, not all the fantasy elements, but if earth was covered in massive beast that humans had to deal with with just pointy sticks and later swords. The Deer God as a metaphor for just nature in general, and humans slowly building up the ability to tame nature it self. One could set this movie basically any time and place in history, back before the Beast and Gods of the world still stood a chance against our technology.
Here are some ChatGPT generated examples:
Certainly! Here are ten different locations and time periods where a similar story to "Princess Mononoke" could take place:
Ancient Greece - A mountainous region where a conflict arises between a mining colony and a guardian spirit of the forest.
Viking Era Scandinavia - A fjord-side village clashes with a mythical creature that protects the surrounding wilderness.
Aztec Empire (15th century) - A powerful empire seeks to exploit the resources of a sacred rainforest, leading to a confrontation with a nature deity.
Colonial-era India - British colonizers encounter a fierce resistance from indigenous tribes defending their sacred lands from industrial exploitation.
Prehistoric Amazon Rainforest - A tribal society fights against an ancient creature guarding their sacred territory from encroaching outsiders.
Wild West (19th century) - A railroad company's expansion threatens a Native American tribe's spiritual connection with the land and a legendary animal guardian.
Ancient Egypt - An ambitious pharaoh's desire for expansion puts him at odds with a powerful deity protecting the Nile and its surrounding environment.
Feudal Japan (Sengoku period) - Warring samurai clans disrupt the balance of nature, resulting in a conflict with a mythical creature protecting a pristine forest.
Victorian-era Australia - Settlers encroach upon the habitats of unique and rare creatures, leading to clashes with indigenous tribes who revere them as gods.
Future Mars Colony - Human colonists on Mars face a struggle between resource exploitation and the preservation of the planet's delicate ecosystem, involving an enigmatic Martian guardian entity.
Ok, that last one is ChatGPT completely missing the point, but you get the idea.
There is a line Princess Mononoke along the lines of "There are humans everywhere; go kill them in your own forest."
And that's that the take away from all this. Humans are everywhere, and we've slowly, one after the other, killed every single giant and beast that used to live on this planet, that were tasked with protecting their (and our) gods.
And now humans have killed and stolen the head of not just the Deer God, but of every single God on the planet. The oceans gods, the forest gods, the desert gods, the rain gods, the river gods, and gods of wind, heat and cold. All of them, blind and angry, will thrash their vengeance upon us all.
The last thing I'll add, is that Lady Eboshi saved women from the sex trade, and treated and housed lepers. She wanted to build a place for the people of her village. It's very likely that Ashitaka's people long ago killed the beast and gods of their own forest, in the attempt to do the same.
Humans have been evil a lot in our history, but also, a lot of the time, too, we just wanted a place to live.
