2023.06.03 17:49 Sapphiqueen Pleasant dinner with a stranger
| I (29F) found myself craving delicious Korean BBQ earlier, and although I was alone, I didn't mind it since I'm accustomed to dining solo. I even decided to invite anyone available to join me on a post in phlgbtr4r. But since I'm in Manila Korea Town already anyway, I went ahead into what looks like an authentic Korean samgyup place. Determined to enjoy my meal on my own, I ordered two plates of meat ala carte. Just as I was about to start indulging, this lady came in and asked for a table for one. Without hesitation, I politely invited her to join me. She gladly accepted and took a seat across from me. It was one of the most memorable dinner I've had in a while. As we began talking, it became evident that talking to her was such a bliss. She has this natural warmth and was an excellent conversationalist. With undivided attention, she listened intently to my stories, and together, we just enjoyed each other's company talking about the most random and fascinating topics. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and genuine connection. I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible experience I had just encountered. It was more than just a satisfying meal; it was a moment of genuine human connection that touched my heart. This unexpected meeting reminded me of the magic found in simple moments. TLDR; Invited a stranger from the next table to eat with me and had an amazing human connection. submitted by Sapphiqueen to CasualPH [link] [comments] |
2023.06.03 17:49 Mkumj12 The omnipotent paradox
Apologies ahead if this is outside the context of this board. For those unfamiliar the omnipotent paradox is the question: What happens when an immovable object meets an unstoppable force? Granted you could scoff off the whole thing assuming either of these are impossible, but that would be no fun. I have two ideas to answer this brain buster. First a simple one: it creates a transfer of energy resulting in a change of roles (this of course is paradoxical to the paradox), but the unstoppable force becomes an immovable object and vice versa. The other idea I have which is more science backed, maybe, is that it would result in what I refer to as a universe creating event, like the Big Bang. Interestingly one might picture either of these forces as having huge volume, in our simple way of thinking bigger things more energy. To the contrary if we modeled what this might actually look like both forces would be infinitesimally small with a simultaneous exponentially large density, think black hole or point of singularity. So I would posit when this “unstoppable” force meets the “immovable” object the result would be a physics warping nano moment, as a Vice article recently described, in which the release of infinite energy against an equal resistance could only result in a big bang event. The amount of pressure and heat growing on infinitum would create a singularity and subsequent explosive force.

2023.06.03 17:49 TwitchyBuck Painting movie colour schemes or creating your own
I am only just getting started in middle earth after playing warhammer fantasy and 40k for many years. I have created my own colour schemes in almost every army I have ever collected, but middle-earth seems like a setting where using the traditional colour schemes feels more appropriate. Is it more common to choose your own, or follow the movies? I know most people's advice will be something along the lines of 'do what you want', but I am interested in knowing what the common trend is before I paint Minas Tirith with red instead of black or something along those lines.

2023.06.03 17:48 Most-Calendar-600 Owlman basically foretold…
… Miles being Prowler in another universe and his dad being dead.
“Before there was thought, there was this place. One Earth, with a single history. But with the coming of man came the illusion of free will. And with that illusion came chaos. With every choice we make, we literally create a world. History branches in two, creating one Earth where we made the choice, and a second where we didn't. That's the secret of the universe, you know. Billions of people, making billions of choices, creating infinite Earths. Some so similar to each other that you could spend a lifetime searching for any distinction. Others so radically different, they defy comprehension.”

2023.06.03 17:48 Aromatic_Listen_7489 Leaving academia: am I useless?
I am finishing my PhD in theoretical solid state physics this year. I don't want to stay in academia, however I am not sure which direction to follow, and where else I can apply my skills in physics and maths. Kind of feel my knowledge is a bit useless for industry/high-tech.
I am looking into a direction of data analytics, or data science. I attended a special half-year university course in data science (got a certificate), and I've been using Python a bit throughout my studies and work as a physicist (though I am doing analytics mainly, not numerics). I don't mind learning more, as I certainly like coding.
I would love hear stories from fellow Redditors with a theoretical physics background who dealt with a similar problem and found a job outside academia. How hard was it? How long did it take? How did you decide what do you want to do, and how much did you have to learn (I mean hard skills relevant to a chosen job position)?

Hello everyone! I spend a lot of time on the internet because of work, so I thought hey, why not try a subreddit like this one! I'm not sure what I'm looking for, I'm a very chill down to earth guy. Everything in life interests me, that's not so good for my focus, but it is nice because that means that there's surely atleast something that we have in common that we can talk about! I love getting to know new people, online and irl. When I'm not behind the computer I'm usually hiking through the woods, or being a couch potato binging the latest show on netflix

2023.06.03 17:46 Chestertons_Eyebrows Trying to identify a SF anthology I read in High School.
This has been driving me crazy for over 40 years. When I was in 9th Grade, in 1978-79, we read from an anthology of Science Fiction stories for young adults. The only specific story I can remember is James E. Gunn’s “Cave of Night.” Another followed an explorer as he meets creatures on a strange planet, including a silicon-based creature that leaves glass pyramids as feces. Several of the stories really captured my 15-year-old imagination, and I have been trying to track it down ever since. I have even reached out to the teacher — she remembers using the book, but has no details. The book was structured as a textbook, with review and discussion questions after each story. Does this sound familiar to anybody?

2023.06.03 17:45 Asynergyst 29M Looking for conversations, connection, activities, community, pretty much anything.
Hey there,
I'm looking for people to talk with long-term, be that once a day, or once every 5 minutes. I love connecting to people through conversation. We can talk about math, science, and the universe. We can talk about food and traveling. We can talk about genetic engineering plants and animals. We can talk about stories and movies (I'm very into sci-fi). Or we can just talk about life, what it means to be alive, what our goals are, how to get through our current situations. Anything. I want to get to know you, and I hope that I'm interesting enough to get to know in return.
I'm down to play video games (I'm more into PC gaming) together, or video chat, voice chat, or just text chat. At the moment, my preferred method of communication is discord. I'd be happy to use the Reddit chat feature to start, but if you have discord and you want to chat, shoot me a DM with your id or leave it in the comments and I'll be sure to send you a friend request.
My timezone (at the moment) is CST. I'm more of a morning person so I think I could pretty easily hold a conversation if you're in Europe. Anything further east might be challenging, but I'd be happy to try and make it work. I don't really mind who you are, your gender, or age. I try to be open-minded, and friendship can take many forms.
Here are some randomly specific things about me:
- I love cooperative board/video games. It Takes Two is on my bucket list.
- I'm working on a music album. Don't really know what genre it is, but people have said my music would be good soundtracks for games.
- I have some undiagnosed 'issues', one of which is probably type 2 bipolar. This means sometimes I might not be a great friend but it's something I'm seeking help for. It does mean if you have similar issues, I ought to be quite understanding.

2023.06.03 17:44 vpscloud19 Mothercrystals.
Of course, this is merely based on assumptions that it is based on past FF's themes and elements that 16 might be using all this time.
In connections to FF1:
In FF1 (no, not the Chaos one), its premise was simply that because the crystals lost their light because of the Garland and the Four Fiends. Here is the opening line when we start playing FF1:
"The world is veiled in darkness. The wind stops, the sea is wild, and the earth begins to rot. The people wait, their only hope, a prophecy..
When the world is in darkness, Four Warriors will come.
After a long journey, for young warriors arrive, each holding an orb."
Now the orb is obviously the crystals. In FF1, it was about restoring the crystal's power to restore the proper order of the FF1 world, where the winds blow again, the sea calms, and the earth recovers.
In FF16, there can be some uses of the crystals, like a water source (literally using the crystal just for some coffee or tea), fire, maybe electricity too, weaponry, and also light. And as with the premise of FF16, the crystals' powers start to run out, which is the source of wars happening in Valisthea. The crystals' weakening power is also the cause of the Blight, slowly making the earth rot.
And with FF16's tagline:
"The legacy of the crystal has shaped our history for long enough"
Clive's mission to destroy the crystals is the exact opposite of what the Warriors of Light have been prophesied to do. Yet there is no indication of a prophecy of the destruction of the crystals, nor prophecy is again the main theme as like many other FFs, which means Clive is doing it on free will.
FF1 - Warrior of Light - Restore the power of the Crystals - Prophesied
FF16 - Clive Rosfield - Destroy the Mothercrystals - Free Will
And while FF1's ending after the time loop show the crystals restored and had a happy ending, as FF16 is more than just the crystals, it could be more than just a sad ending.
In connections to FF5:
Now, CBU3 sets their inspirations on FF5, where the crystals are also the central theme of the story. They were once destroyed which caused the two worlds to reunite, and also made a chaotic turn for the story, but were restored in the ending and sealed in a much safer places. They even had Liquid Flame as a boss.
And FF5's other theme is the use of the Void, also known as the Interdimensional Rift that made Final Fantasy a multiversal story, loosely connected with one another. Only certain games make use of it like FF8, where Gilgamesh becomes a GF for Squall's group who replaces Odin. It then gives the possibility of Gilgamesh appearing again hunting for swords, and as a sidequest.
The fact that we only see so little of the story makes it possible that the Interdimensional Rift might be used again as an element of the story, shaping some of its history, but not taking a part of the story with high importance unlike FF5's. And if the dev team claims the story is much much larger than what it is advertised, then the Void can be the reason why. It is also possible that the Rift sucked out ancient debris and materials that the Fallen civilization then used 1500 years ago, before they fall of course. It's possible that those behind Clive's enemies in late game (not the empire or other nations) use the Rift as their base, like what ExDeath did long ago. They might even present some easter eggs that the base they used were once ExDeath's.

2023.06.03 17:43 ginomachi [SPS] Hi everyone, author E. S. Fein here again! Many asked for me to make a post when my new book is available for pre-order. Well, it is finally here! Mendel's Ladder, Volume 1 in the Collected Histories of Neoevolution Earth. Dystopic scifi, grimdark epic fantasy, intense action, and more!
2023.06.03 17:42 sanblvd In the far far far far far future, each one of us will be studies by beings for hundreds or thousands of years.
There is only a certain amount of hydrogen in the univese and they are essential for star formation and once they are burned out, new star formation will be impossible, however if any civilization that are still alive by that point will able to figure out ways to extend their existance for trillions of eons more, for them the early hydrogen era of the universe is nothing but an tiny tiny fraction of a second on a year long scale. However they are also unlikey to make any further scientific advances to change anything since most of the elements in the universe will be at the maximum decay stage, but they will be advanced enough to keep their consciousness for another few trillion trillion years in the vold of emptiness. What do they do? They are going to study each one of us human/animals/insects that have ever existed on this earth, they will break down every second of our life and study it to the fullest of extend possible..... all of this because they literally have nothing to do. Don't ask me how can they get this data, they'll get it.
I am posting this as a message to them, hi there, hello, I know your predicament and I am sorry. And yes I know, I am not the first person to come up with this thought, but I think I am rare enough don't you think? Maybe you will spend another few thousand years of your time to study why i said what I just said just now. chow

2023.06.03 17:42 Secure_Sale_9263 NYU Tandon Bridge Program
A few months ago, I posted on this subreddit asking for advice on pursuing an MS in Computer Science with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. After conducting my own research, I have narrowed down my options to the NYU Tandon Bridge program, which would make me eligible for an MS in CS at NYU and other universities that accept it. Columbia University also offers a similar bridge program.
I am currently in my third year of engineering, and my GPA stands at 8.6 out of 10 (or 3.44 out of 4). While my university may not be the most renowned in India, it has an above-average reputation. Additionally, I am currently working with a professor on a project related to the field of computer science.
Besides these accomplishments, I don't have much else in my profile. I am seeking guidance on what my next steps should be. My goal is to raise my GPA to 8.8 or 8.9 by the end of my third year and work on more projects with professors as well as independently. What other actions should I consider taking?
