2023.05.21 19:29 voldemoriarty28 Upgraded from Schwinn to Marlin 5. Can’t wait to take it out on the trail
| Bought a schwinn sidewinder a couple months ago as a beginner trail+commuter bike. After taking it out to some trails, figured it is not going to be good enough if I want to have some fun on the trails. So decided to upgrade to Trek marlin 5 because of the 2x8 drivetrain. Excited to take it out on the trails submitted by voldemoriarty28 to trekmarlin [link] [comments] |

2023.04.30 04:28 ITPoet I’m getting there, just 11 days of practice
i started on april 18th with a basic walmart bike, the schwinn sidewinder, and i still have it. i have improved a lot. the elevation is also a lot more than it was that day, so if it was purely flat, i’m sure i could do it in a lot less time. will try the same route on may 18th again.

2023.04.21 15:29 Pots_And_Pans Questions and thoughts on buying first road bike
TLDR: My ebike has made me want to get into road cycling, what kind of road bike do I want?
Budget: $1000
Bikes I test-rode so far: Current ebike: - Schwinn Sidewinder MTB 26 inch wheels with flat bars with 1000w hub motor.
- Weighs 80 lbs.
- Riding in a more upright position, but not a cruiser position.
Current type of riding: - Ranges from casual to exercising.
- I ride paved roads 90% of the time and 10% rail trails with packed crushed gravel.
- No true off roading in the woods or heavy mud.
What I want to do: - I’ve found I really enjoy longer rides on the road and pedaling hard for a workout.
- What appeals to me about a road bike is how light they are and having to rely on my own power to go places.
- Not thinking about using it to commute to work right now. (That’s originally why I built the ebike but didn’t finish it till fall and then took my time getting comfortable riding in traffic)
Flat vs Drop Bars: - Flat is what I am familiar with. Drop bars felt squirrely. The more forward position also felt unnatural. But would probably get used to it.
- What’s better for hand comfort? On my ebike with flats I was having some ulnar nerve pain but corrected it with saddle height. But I like the idea of being able to switch hand positions in the drop bars
- I’ve read that flats keep you more upright and are better for city/heavy traffic. Most of my riding is in the suburbs and farm roads in amish country - so a mix of moderate to calm traffic.
Road vs Hybrid vs Gravel: - I like the idea of a gravel bike and being able to use it on more types of terrain, but also don’t want to sacrifice any performance if my riding will primarily be on paved roads.
- But at the same time, I’m not planning to do any racing so gravel bikes should be enough speed for my type of riding, right?
- Should I look for a road/hybrid bike with wider tires that would be okay for rail trails?
- Does it make sense to buy a gravel bike and an extra set of road wheels?
New vs Used: - I was initially set on used as a way of testing if I will actually enjoy a road style bike but talking with my LBS made me realize I didn’t know a lot of the questions I should be asking or info I would need.
- For example, I was confident I would need a medium size frame for my height (5’11”) but the person I spoke with at the shop recommended I try a Large and it felt very comfortable.
Are there any other considerations I should think about while looking for a bike? Any other advice?
If you got this far, thanks for reading my ramble.

2023.03.26 14:33 GoGaslightYerself Will Increasing Tire Size Increase No-Hands Stability?
Recently got back into biking after many years away. On my last bike, a
1982 Schwinn Sidewinder, I could take my hands off the bars and continue pedaling (to give my back a break while commuting).
On my new flat-bar hybrid bike (
Specialized Sirrus 2.0), I can't comfortably take my hands off the bars (yet). Would increasing my tire size increase the effective wheel diameter and therefore increase
rake/trail, caster effect, and thus my no-hands stability? (It currently has 700x32c tires and can go up to 42c). I also wonder whether a tire with more mass would increase the "flywheel" gyroscopic effect (Sidewinder had much heavier balloon tires.)
Alternately, is there something else I could do to make this bike more ridable with no-hands?
TIA.

2023.03.03 20:22 DaydrinkingWhiteClaw Middle Schooler Bike
Hi! I'm new here, and looking for some advice. I don't know much about bikes, but I'm in the market for a bike for my son to take to middle school starting this September. He's 4'9" now, but will probably be a bit taller come September since he hasn't had his growth spurt yet. I thought I'd orient myself early, and came across Kent and Schwinn mountain bikes at an accessible price point.
I'm currently looking at these two:
Schwinn Sidewinder mountain bike, 24-inch wheels, 21 speeds, black / green at $198
Kent 24" Northpoint Boy's Mountain Bike, Black/Green at $98
Are these ok choices, and which would be better quality? Are there other bikes I should consider at this price point?
Thanks in advance for any input you may have to share.

2023.02.27 13:11 GoGaslightYerself Convince Me On Flat Handlebars
After 40 years away, I'm getting back into bike riding, and my new hybrid has flat handlebars. I'm having trouble getting used to this "aggressive" riding position. It makes it hard to see around you, and very hard to look back over your shoulder for overtaking cars. It's also hard on my back (at least so far), and my wrists go numb.
My last bike ('82 Schwinn Sidewinder "mountain bike") had a much more upright riding position, and I used it on a 7-mile daily commute. One nice thing was that on long straightaways, I could take my hands off the bars, and use them to help push my legs down. I could ride for miles with "no hands." My new hybrid bike doesn't seem to be rideable with "no hands" ... seems like it doesn't have enough trail (or is it rake?) to keep the front wheel straight.
So anyway, I'm thinking of changing the handlebars on my hybrid to give me a couple inches of rise, so that I can sit a little more upright, since I apparently cannot ever take my hands off the bars anymore.
Is there any reason (beyond wind resistance) that I should resist the urge to modify the bike in this way? (Somewhere I read that half your body weight should be on the bars and half on the seat, but that sounds crazy to me ... I'm supposed to support 90 pounds -- half my weight -- with my arms the whole time I'm riding?)
Thank you in advance for any advice or insights.

First new bike -- first ANY bike -- in 41 years, and my, my, how things have changed! This thing shifts gears like a dream and I doubt it's really even dialled in yet (since I had to assemble it myself). Also, the rear brake needs to be bled, so I have that little adventure to look forward to.
2022 Specialized Sirrus 2.0 I also looked at the Cannondale Quick 5 and really really wanted to love it, but the components were nicer on the Specialized and it was cheaper anyway. Plus the lifetime frame warranty from Specialized sealed the deal.
The color in real life isn't as pretty as what I (thought I) saw on their website, but it's growin' on me. Also not lovin' the riding position -- I kinda liked the more upright position on my 1982 Schwinn Sidewinder -- but maybe leaning over will grow on me, too. I'm hoping it doesn't mess with my lower back.
It may not sound like it, but I really like it! And I'm looking forward to getting back in decent shape after too many years away from it.
