2023.05.30 09:13 Phaphilou Looking for native English speakers to record themselves reading my French students'poems

Hello guys,
I'm an English high school teacher from France. My students have written very short poems in English (8 verses) and I thought it could be fun if some native English speakers could record themselves while reading them.
There are some mistakes and obscure parts but I've decided not to change anything.
If you've got 1 minute to spare, and have the possiblity to record yourself using your phone, you'd make them very happy !
You can choose one from the following compilation (at the beginning of the recording, please state your name or nickname if you wish to remain anonymous, and the country you're from. It will be fun to discuss your different accents in class):
I don't know yet if many redditors will be interested in participating. To make things easier, you can reply to this post with the title of the poem you've chosen, and send me a PM with a link to the file you will have uploaded (wetransfer? ou some other hosting service). That way, other redditors will know which poems have already been recorded.
Merci beaucoup !
Here it is:
The bad dream
Around the mirrored walls and polished floor,
Their dancing bodies can’t escape from these doors
Behind this mask of prosperity
Hides a dark and a controlled reality.
Working hard for an assigned dream
Costumes that highlight their gleam
Hiding behind the nightmare
Parents living their last dream through their little star.
Welcome to the new society
The remparts of Laon used to rhyme with safety
Built during the Middle Ages, they were the reflection of security
Days and nights, from summer to winter, Barbarians were in the way
But the wall, as a bodyguard kept them away.
The remparts of Laon used to rhyme with safety,
But today in their shadow people can find a dead body.
Now rapists, thieves and killers like to join the party.
Welcome to the new society
McDo : no, no, no
If you want to be skinny,
Don’t look in your plate
The burgers are not healthy
If you don’t want to increase your sugar rate
Yummy Yummy Yummy Nuggets !
If you want to eat pets
You might cough up feathers
The next step : eat American invaders.
Modern Guillotine
Many are these cells that swallow the intelligent ;
Prisoners are sitting on stools ;
With their over developed brains, they teach children they deem fools ;
Without worrying about their sentiments ;
The prisoners tremble with anxiety like the rat that walked in the cell without rule
The cell resists against the tremors
While Charles 1st becomes the slave king facing god and his terror
God invades his head with knowledge and the death bell rings in this place : the school !
Fields of Loneliness
In the middle of the green realm
Thrones a quiet domain
Something went whelm
With a terrible silence it became overwhelmed
That we men have let settle
They’re now devastated to have
Lost the beauty of this place
It lost its pace
Women don’t come anymore
To brush their hair and paddle the pound
No more joy can be found
Water of memories :
This haven of peace gently preserved
Of this life manhandled
I pick you up presently
But it's not like previously
When nothing goes
I come back to you
But I see through you
The anger that men throw
I drown in your eyes
And I melt in your arms
You play the mother's role
You who were once the queen's watering hole
Overpriced LeaderPrice
Prices climb high, our wallets run dry
The cost of living, we cannot deny,
Shelves stacked tall, yet can’t buy it all
Our budget begs to differ, as we take the fall
Though products sell fast, we cannot afford
Supplied depleted, the shelves look bored
As prices soar and wallet shrink
We are faced to choose but we can’t afford to think

Question/ Advice: Buffed resin is going from clear to foggy
Hello fellow crafters! I had this interesting commission come in from a friend of mine. They had a broken mirror that they put a fake $100 in and covered in a thin layer of resin to act as a conversation piece. She had an issue in her pour and asked me to sand it down and rebuff it (she still wants the mirror to be reflective). After sanding to 2000 grit and buffing/polishing, I followed the instructions on the polish I was using which directed the surface to be wiped down with a microfiber towel. This removed some of the clarity from the finish, and I wanted to make sure my client would be able to clean the mirror.
I attempted to wipe the mirror down with simple green to remove the haze, but it ended up creating more of a hazy fog as the product dried. I repeated the process with both windex and water to a similar result. I finally tried Mineral Spirits, as shown in this video (the shop towel in the video was dipped in the spirits), and that temporarily returned the mirror clear finish. However, as it dried the foggy haze returned. I do all sorts of DIY, primarily in wood, but this is the first time I've worked with resin at this scale/size and am at a bit of a loss as to how to retain a good finish. I have a few questions for more experienced resin craftspeople as follows:
  1. Has anyone had similar issues? How did you resolve it?
  2. How would you recommend finishing such a project to retain a clear surface that could be cleaned easily?
  3. Would pouring a flood coat help remedy this fogginess issue? If so, how would you recommend finishing that layer? What thickness would you advise?
Any and all help or insight is greatly appreciated as I'd like to finish this project by next weekend (June 9th) and want to ensure I allow proper curing time if additional resin is needed. Thanks in advance!

Manipulation Quotes.......................................................................................................27812 1. IntroductionManipulation is not the same as influence. We all use influence other people to advance our goals, to motivate others and to help them realize their own goals. Influencing happens all the time and in many different ways. As long as we inspire, motivate, convince, persuade, seduce or use assertiveness most people will agree that we are acting within the frame of healthy social life.Every now and then, however, we will use a different tactic: we will manipulate people to get what we want. There are a lot of negative connotations connected to manipulating. The reason is that, contrary to the first series of tactics, manipulation works with unfair means and does not respect the personal rights of the second party (now called "the victim"): it violates his integrity, works with hidden agendas and deliberately uses dishonest tricks like faulty reasoning, coercion, blackmail and lying in an attempt to control the victim's actions. Manipulation also is unbalanced: it is about suiting the manipulator's advantage or purpose only, often even at the expense of the victim. So, in theory, the difference is clear enough: influencing is positive, manipulating is negative. Influencing is ethical, manipulating is not.In practice, it is often more difficult to know when you are being manipulated and how to best defend yourself against it: Manipulation is unbalanced, the manipulator is trying to benefit at your expense. Yet one of the tricks he will use to reach his goal, is to convince you that you are the one who is to benefit most.How can you know whether a person is hiding information from you in an attempt to mislead you? How can you be certain about the final intentions of another person? It's often really difficult to recognize manipulation when it happens. After all, if we are aware that it is happening ... would we allow ourselves to be manipulated? One of the reasons that we ignore to recognize manipulation is that it goes against the very basics of honest behaviour: We want to be respected, appreciated and loved for whom we are. This implies that we avoid hurting others, avoid lying, feel we deserve the benefit of the doubt and therefore treat others as innocent until proven guilty. Because we act like this, we assume others do too. Every now and then however, we will meet with people that have a different approach to life. As a rule, it is safe to say that when things look like bullshit and smell like it, they usually are bullshit. When you feel uneasy about a relationship; when you have to give in too much; when you feel like having to walk on egg shells; when you feel guilty, humiliated or imperfect after yet another difficult conversation; when choices become power-games; when affection turns green with jealousy or becomes overwhelming, exclusive and possessive; when there are half-truths, lies, denials surfacing; when everything that goes wrong somehow is your fault; when you feel you are pressured to take decisions you do not agree with ... chances that you are being manipulated are very real.If you already know this, than you also know a manipulator rarely comes unprepared. Feeling that you are being manipulated is one thing. Putting the finger on the right spot is much more difficult. 13📷 Because, of course, the manipulator will claim that he acted in good faith; that "again", he is being misunderstood, ...That is where this book comes in handy: it lists and explains the tricks manipulators use and teaches you how to recognize them and how to best defend and protect yourself.14📷

Continue Reading with Trial 1. Manipulation: What, Why, Who, How?Personal Growth - The Manipulation Trap: Are you a victim? - by Anita Anandhttp://www.lifepositive.com/Mind/Personal\_Growth/The\_Manipulation\_Trap92010.aspDo you find yourself doing things that you do not really want to? When someone close to you or in a situation of power suggests that you do something against your will, how do you feel? Probably not good. How often do you experience or hear of people who seem to have been blackmailed into accepting life-changing decisions (such as choice of education, career, and marriage partner), because their parents, partners, bosses, best friends, or children thought it was best for them.Everybody who wants something from somebody else is a potential manipulator. Especially when the feeling is that they can get what they want more easily in a covert way than in open and rational ways.Manipulation often is about power. Manipulators want the power to dominate you, to force you to give them whatever it is they are after to feel important, safe, comfortable, valued, loved, …: obedience, loyalty, cooperation, support, vote, silence, energy, time, work, money, attention, companionship, friendship, love, sex, … your Chinese Vases … really anything. No wonder that manipulators come in all kinds, as we will see in the next chapters. All salesmen are trained in “sales techniques”, many of which are in fact “manipulation techniques”. Important however is to realize that everybody will try to manipulate others every now and then. Though ethically never a good solution, in the real world we will all sometimes use manipulation to win time, because the favour required is not important, to prevent a mayor bad, to avoid arguments and frictions, “because this is for a real noble cause”, etc… Manipulation becomes a problem only when the manipulator advances his own interests at the expense of this victim’s and causes mental, physical, financial or other harm.According to clinical psychologist Dr George Simon, often, manipulators in many ways are dysfunctional people who conceal aggressive intentions and behaviours; know the psychological vulnerabilities of the victim to determine what tactics are likely to be the most effective, and have a sufficient level of ruthlessness to have no qualms about causing harm to the victim if necessary.Manipulators also need to advance their own purposes and their own gain, even at virtually any cost to others. They need to attain feelings of power, and superiority in relationships with others and need to feel in control.Dr Richard Paul and Dr Linda Elker write: “The human mind has no natural guide to the truth, nor does it naturally love the truth. What the human mind loves, is itself: what serves it, what flatters it, what gives it what it wants, and what strikes down and destroys whatever threatens it”.Manipulators know this very well. They shrewdly focus on pursuing their own interest, without respect to how that pursuit affect others. They know how to use the established structure of power to advance their interests. They have a great command of the rhetoric of persuasion and are more sophisticated, more verbal and generally have more schooling, greater status and achieve more success than uncritical persons. They are accustomed to playing the dominant role in relationships. They cannot effectively manipulate others if they appear to them to be invalidating their beliefs. That is why they are rarely rebels or critics of society. In fact, since they are fundamentally concerned, not with advancing rational values, but with getting what they want, they are careful to present themselves as sharing the values of those they manipulate. For the same reason, they strive to appear before others in a way that associates themselves with power, authority and conventional morality. Their goal is 15📷📷📷

Continue Reading with Trial always to control what others think and they do so by controlling the way information is presented to them.In order to control and change your mind, however, they first have to read it. Manipulators will observe you, collect information through how you answer their questions and what your friends or colleagues tell about you, but also through finding out more about you: who you associate with, where you live, what your life is like, how you feel, what you read, which music you listen to, what you do … Nowadays this kind of personal information is always more found through electronic traces that you leave on the internet: social network profiles, comments, things you published, …Manipulators continually collect, consolidate, then sift all of this information in order to find thought patterns that can be interpreted as your personal disposition, i.e., to better understand your personality, character matrix and hence find your weak spots. Here is a warning for in case you would consider starting to take advantage of some people yourself: If you treat some people unselfishly, you will basically treat everybody you deal with unselfishly. But if you take advantage today of some people, you will end up taking advantage of anyone.“Show me a man who mistreats his enemies, and I’ll show you a man who stabs his friends in the back too.” (R.B. Sparkman – The art of manipulation)16📷📷

Information From Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological\_manipulation**2.1 What exactly is Psychological Manipulation?Psychological manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the perception or behavior of others through underhanded, deceptive, or even abusive tactics. By advancing the interests of the manipulator, often at the other's expense, such methods could be considered exploitative, abusive, devious, and deceptive. It depends on the context and motivations, whether social influence constitutes underhanded manipulation.2.2 What is required for** successful manipulation?According to George K. Simon, successful psychological manipulation primarily involves the manipulator:1.concealing aggressive intentions and behaviors.2.knowing the psychological vulnerabilities of the victim to determine what tactics are likely to be the most effective.3.having a sufficient level of ruthlessness to have no qualms about causing harm to the victim if necessary.Consequently the manipulation is likely to be accomplished through covert aggressive (relational aggressive or passive aggressive) means.2.3 What do manipulators want?Manipulators can have various possible motivations, including: the need to advance their own purposes and personal gain at virtually any cost to othersa strong need to attain feelings of power and superiority in relationships with othersa want and need to feel in control (aka. control freak)a desire to gain a feeling of power over others in order to raise their perception of self-esteem17📷📷📷📷

2023.05.30 04:50 Mental4Help I asked for a mix of Stephen King and Dr. Seuss.

In a land shrouded in shadows and rhyme, Where dark tales meet whimsy, it's quite the time. Stephen King and Dr. Seuss, an unusual blend, Their worlds collide, and new stories transcend.
In the haunted town of Who-Ville's Derry, A Grinch-faced creature named Pennywise was scary. He lurked in the sewers, a shape-shifting clown, Feasting on fears, causing children to frown.
But Horton the Elephant, kind and brave, Stood tall against Pennywise's wicked rave. With a sneer and a leer, the clown tried to prey, But Horton's heart, unwavering, saved the day.
In the midst of the night, with a whisper so eerie, Thing One and Thing Two became quite leery. They peeked through the window of a house quite grim, Where Jack Torrance wrote, his mind growing dim.
"Oh, the Places You'll Scare!" Jack's manuscript read, As the Overlook Hotel filled him with dread. Redrum, redrum, the words echoed loud, While Grinch lurked nearby, wearing a shroud.
The Cat in the Hat, mischievous and sly, Took a stroll down the road, his grin reaching the sky. He met the Pet Sematary, where things came alive, With eerie resurrections, but not quite as they strive.
Green Eggs and Psycho, a breakfast macabre, Norman Bates stared, his eyes filled with slob. With a knife in his hand and a smile so wry, He said, "Eat up, my friend, and prepare to die."
In a land where imagination takes a twist, Where Goosebumps mix with Seussian bliss, Stephen King's darkness meets Dr. Seuss's glee, A mashup of tales for all to see.
So, heed this warning, be it day or night, As you journey through worlds both dark and bright, Embrace the fusion of horror and rhymes, For in this realm, the imagination chimes.
Please note that this whimsical narrative is a creative blend of the styles and themes of Stephen King and Dr. Seuss. It is meant to be a lighthearted exploration of the combination of their distinctive storytelling approaches and does not represent any specific works by either author.

2023.05.30 04:32 mrspwins MSC Meraviglia - NYC - May 7-14 Review

Hello! My husband and I went on our first-ever cruise on the MSC Meraviglia earlier this month and it just occurred to me that it might be nice to post a review. Since the biggest questions I see people ask about with MSC are "how is the food?" and "why do people hate the food?" I thought I'd do a food review. Obviously I can't compare it with any of the other cruise lines, but we like to eat out and are willing to spend money on a great meal so that's what I am comparing it to. We've eaten at Michelin starred restaurants and typically avoid chains but on a normal day we're making spaghetti with meat sauce or dumping frozen garlic chicken pasta into a pot like the average American.
Before I get started with this, I need to note that I have been dealing with a health issue that makes me constantly somewhat queasy and have little appetite. While I've lost a bunch of weight I do not recommend this method. However, some days I feel better than others, and I had a couple of good days on the trip, enough to try a couple of specialty restaurants, but not enough to try everywhere I wanted to.
So MSC food is *different*. It's like when you go to Europe and the food isn't really unfamiliar, but you don't find the stuff you're used to eating. They don't really have fried food, they didn't seem to have bags of chips or candy. On days I didn't feel well, I ordered a chicken sandwich from room service. It came on thin-sliced white bread with no crusts, with sliced roasted chicken (not deli slices), tomato, and darker greens. The potato chips were hand-sliced potatoes and tasted like potatoes pan-fried with a little salt. There was a small side-salad too, again with darker greens, not iceberg or romaine, dressed with a little vinagrette. I got chocolate-chip cookies for dessert, and they were crisp and the size you'd get making them at home, not the giant size you usually get here. And it was all delicious! Hopefully that helps to clarify what I mean by "different".
My husband ate at Kaito Sushi by himself, and I joined him at Butcher's Cut and Ocean Cay specialty restaurants. He said the sushi was good, not spectacular, but at least as good or better than we get in our Midwestern city (which has a well-respected food scene). He liked it enough to eat there twice. At Butcher's Cut, I had bone marrow with parsley sauce for an appetizer, filet mignon and crispy fries for the entrée, and lava cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The steak was done perfectly medium-rare, per my request. I didn't try the sauces on the steak because it didn't need them. The scoop of ice cream with the lava cake was small but rich and creamy. Best, though, were the fries. OMG the fries were the most amazing thing I have ever tasted! I cannot express how much I loved them. Steak fries, perfectly crisp and lightly salty with almost a caramelized crust on the outside, perfectly soft and almost melty on the inside. If I could only eat those fries for the rest of my life, I would die happy. This was as good a meal as we would get at a higher-end steakhouse, and definitely worth buying the package.
At Ocean Cay, I had the crackling fennel salad (very good, and a large portion), the roasted lobster tail with bourbon vanilla cream and pureed carrots (very surprising and delicious flavors, not sure that I would have roasted lobster again) and crème brulée (large portion, very rich, so much that I couldn't finish it though I sure tried). I tried my husband's crab cakes - they were tender and seasoned fine for me but he thought they were a bit bland. His tuna steak was good, though. The waitstaff there were particularly attentive and helpful. Worth it with the package, though I got the lobster off the regular menu.
We are not drinkers so did not get an alcohol package. I got a glass of wine with supper at both specialty restaurants, but there were surprisingly few choices by the glass. They were both nice wines but I would have liked a few more options. BTW, there are AA meetings ("Friends of Bill W") every evening in the "library" - more a corner with some bookshelves - in case you need them.
We only ate in the main dining room once for supper. I would say it's like eating at a mid-range restaurant, maybe like a local chain. Not the best meal ever, but far from the worst. This is where you're most likely to find food that is closer to a typical American restaurant - they had meatloaf and potatoes as one option the night we went. Again, the staff is fantastic and are happy to give you more cheese or pepper or leave off the sauce, etc.
We ordered continental breakfast every day but one (it was free with our Fantastica experience). Pain au chocolate every morning, with fresh fruit! The only bad part was that I couldn't get a diet coke delivered with it - my husband ran up to the buffet to get some for me every morning. He said his coffee was great, though, plus he got big bottles of Sanpellegrino all day, so he was happy. We tried eggs and bacon one morning, but it wasn't that great. I had pain au chocolate with a little peanut butter and fruit the rest of the time and was quite content.
The buffet was big and very busy whenever I went to it. They had multiple stations for the more popular items, but I don't think everyone realized that. The pizza was, in fact, very good, but again it is not much like American pizza. The slices were large but had thin, flexible crusts that were not greasy and did not have tons of cheese or tomato sauce. There were pepperoni slices when I was there, but also white pizza and different kinds of veggie slices. The one closest to plain cheese was either pepperoni or one that had small slices of zucchini scattered on it that would be easy to pick off if you didn't want them. If you have a picky person in your party that intends to rely on pizza for their meals, please reconsider - it really isn't even like the Neapolitan pizza I've had here. They didn't have peanut butter out anywhere but they had it available. They had a grill section for burgers and hot dogs (I didn't get a close look, so not sure what else might be there but I didn't see chicken nuggets). They had lots of salad fixings and pasta salad and fruit and a rotisserie chicken station. A wide variety of tasty bread and rolls and real butter. Desserts were usually small - two bites - pieces of cake in different flavors, not necessarily plain chocolate or vanilla. ETA: We just put together a charcuterie plate with french bread and prosciutto and salami and fresh mozzarella and pears, etc a couple of times. Highly recommended.
The chocolate place served an absolutely divine hot chocolate with whipped cream, and the gelato was stellar, but they are extra. Budget for them, both in cash and calories.
My husband gained two pounds even though he mostly lounged around and he ate constantly. I'm sure it's possible to gain a lot more but the smaller portion sizes and dearth of heavy sauces and fried food definitely helped. Neither of us felt deprived at all.
So TL;DR: MDR food was fine, specialty restaurants better and worth the package prices, but picky eaters or fried-food lovers may not be happy with food options.

The Daughter that Follows
Chapter 27
Reunited
Part 2
Anna woke up in a mostly bare room, the only decorations were a few pictures of animals and dinosaurs that her father had collected. Rio was sitting and meditating, facing the rising sun. Anna watched her for a few minutes before standing to get ready.
“Anna...” Rio asked, some small fear was hinted at in her mental voice. “What happens to me when this is over?”
Anna paused, she was slightly confused by the question. “What do you want to do?” Anna asked.
Rio herself emanated some confusion and fear. “I don’t know. My parents will not be happy I took off the stone or that I evolved.”
Anna hugged Rio. “Well you can stay with me and my dad. Like I said, I adopted you.”
“I’m serious Anna.” Rio sighed.
“So am I.” Anna pushed the thought. “As far as family is concerned, you’re a part of mine.”
Rio let a low contented rumble escape her, then stood and walked out.
A few moments later Anna walked out into her father’s small, but comfortable living room. He had apparently upgraded from a trailer to an on site home. Dr. Wu had also apparently insisted he do so, if only because the trailer had recently lost a roof to a mysterious glowing phenomena.
“So I got eggs, toast and if you can beat Rio, bacon.” Alan laughed.
“No one beats me at bacon.” Rio smiled and yipped.
Anna laughed as she took a few scoops of scrambled eggs with a few slices of toast and bacon. Alan joined the both of them and sat smiling. “So how’s V?”
“Probably driving Salem insane.” Anna nodded.
“Not hard.” Alan chuckled. “Once we’ve had the time to relax and reconnect, I’m gonna head out, you give me a week then you follow.”
Anna nodded.
“What, no objections?” Alan laughed.
“I’m going to get my people together during that time.” Anna smiled.
“You have people now?” Alan laughed.
“Uncle Stephen.” Anna nodded, “Endara, a few others like SideEffect.”
“Jesus!” Alan jumped up and looked around. “Sorry, the fact that he exists outside of Dross City has always left a permanent fear of him just finding me.”
Anna stared and nodded at her father. “I’d say I’d invite Wraith’s variant but I don’t think that’s a smart idea.”
“No Agatha or Danny.” Alan pointed at her, “They’ll be targets.”
Anna nodded, “Oh, I know. I might get Shepard...”
Alan burst into laughter and a glint of maniacal glee glinted in his eyes. “You leave them to me.”
“Kratos?” Anna asked.
“Go ahead.” Alan smiled.
Anna shifted, slightly uncomfortable at seeing her father become slightly unhinged.
“Don’t worry, I’m not gonna rip apart the multiverse, I just know more than a few Shepards I can call on for help.” Alan sighed. “Trust me, please. “
Anna nodded, then perked up. “OH! The Spider-Men!”
Alan smiled, “You get the ones you met, I’ll get the others.”
“The others?” Anna asked.
Alan sighed, “Look, the less I have to explain about the Spider-Verse and the lunatics there, the better.”
“Spider-Verse? Anna laughed.
“Don’t laugh, it’s a serious thing in their section of the multiverse.” Alan explained. “Keeps all their worlds held together.”
“Through a web, right?” Anna smirked.
“The Web of Life.” Alan nodded.
Anna stopped as she realized her father was serious. “You mean that, how does that work?”
“Reality is as deep as we can perceive, and the Spiders heroes in that part of the multiverse cna perceive just that much deeper than most others.” Alan explained. “The fact that the majority are absolutely fueled by doing the right thing is a benefit those realities don’t even realize they have.”
Anna stared and blinked.
“They’re more powerful than most realize and the ones who do, usually think they’ll break at some point.” Alan laughed and closed his eyes with a sigh.
When he opened them though Anna saw something different in his eyes. A mist of white just beyond the iris seemed to be there and it called to power deep in her. Anna gasped.
“I think we both know that though.” Alan smiled. “So, you’re gonna be heroism.”
Anna blushed.
Alan looked at Rio. “They got a spot for you yet?”
Rio shook her head.
“Give’em time.” Alan laughed.
Rio grasped her Megastone and nodded.
“Think I’ll go pick up Release.” Alan laughed. “See if he wants to go for one more adventure together.”
“I think he’d love that.” Anna smiled.
“Bonds beyond life and death.” Rio nodded as she looked at her own megastone.
“Exactly.” Anna smiled. “So what’s happening today?”
“Today, I’m either going to be working with a very picky pachy, or Billy’s going to give me a call.” Alan sighed. “Tuesdays.”
Anna nodded. “I’d like to help, either way.”
Alan nodded and smiled, then a dark though clouded his joy. “Anna, what else have you fought? I know the Heartless, the Organization and Atropos’ goons.”
“And Stockman.” Rio added.
Alan nodded. “He’ll be handled. Trust me.”
“What’d you tell Perfection last night?” Anna asked.
Alan smiled. “I gave a good friend an idea for a magic lesson for his student.”
Anna paled. “You didn’t.”
“Alex needs to learn.” Alan smiled.
Anna shook her head. “Well other than them, borg-Reavers, but only at a distance.”
Alan nodded with a look of worry. “I remember that story.”
“Draal...” Anna said with a murderous glare.
Alan telekinetically moved the sharp knives he owned back into their drawers. Rio stared at Anna with a look of concern.
“While I completely agree, I can’t help but feel maybe I should be the one with that much anger towards him.” Alan gave a nervous laugh.
“He kept showing up and insisting he wanted to help.” Anna hissed.
“Yeah, I’m Tiger Dropping him into a star.” Alan growled.
“Wouldn’t that hurt?” Anna asked.
“Tiger Drop negates all damage.” Alan smiled, “Not that you’d get that. Please tell me you don’t get that? I don’t want to have to kill a Majima.”
Anna stared at her father and shook her head.
“Good.” Alan smiled and nodded.
“Rio?” Anna asked.
“I have no idea.” Rio shrugged.
“Then there’s Dinal.” Anna said. “If I ever see her again, I’m gonna nuke her.”
Alan nodded. “Not if I see her first.” He smiled.
“I don’t think the Scareek can follow me but I think I made them think humans in that reality were psychic.” Anna explained as she continued, ignoring her father's prodding.
“Damn.” Alan laughed, “We can try and fix that after.”
Anna shook her head. “I kinda should have died. Perfection saved me but made it look like I did.”
Alan stared at his daughter. “Well then they get a wonderful news flash because if Perfection’s involved there’s a plan at work and someone is getting f’d in the a.”
Anna snorted at her father’s phrasing. “No saying hi. MAybe let them see us?”
“You feel guilty.” Alan smirked.
“I...” She sighed. “I messed up big.”
Alan nodded. “Then we’ll see what we can do.”
“Oh!” Anna slammed her fist. “Sindri and Odin!”
“Right, Thor is back there too.” Rio added. “He isn’t a monster anymore.”
Alan paused and looked at Rio. “I have a distinct memory of my barriers being casually obliterated.”
“He’s changed, for his daughter.” Anna explained. “To be better.”
Alan looked at Anna and nodded. If there was one thing he could understand it was that. “Kratos okay with him?”
Anna nodded. “They’re trying to make everything as peaceful as they can, but Sindri and Odin are working with Atropos.”
“Damn.” Alan hissed. “They weren’t kidding.”
“They’ve been keeping you informed, haven’t they?” Anna asked.
Alan nodded as his phone went off with a K-pop song. He answered the phone and watched his daughter fall out of her chair laughing.
“Yeah, I can be ready in an hour. Got my kid with me, she’s got the skills to help keep one of them calm.” Alan said in a serious tone.
Anna popped back up and shoveled food into her mouth as fast as she could.
“Trike herd and...” Alan paused as he wrote it down. “They made another I-Rex?” He sighed as he clearly received confirmation. “We’ll take the Rex, you guys can handle the herd and if we have to put this one down we can do it quickly.” He ended the call and nearly tossed his phone across the room.
“It’s not a normal dinosaur is it?” Anna asked.
“Made in a lab, originally to be a more ‘exciting’ dino.” Alan hissed. “Raised it and it’s sibling without other interactions.”
“Oh god.” Anna gasped.
“It went berserk once it got out, and it’s extremely smart. Part Raptor and rex with some squid thrown in to help it cloak.” Alan explained. “This one was specifically raised to be a weapon but it’s a juvenile, it can have a chance.”
Anna nodded. “I can keep us safe.”
Alan smiled. “I don’t doubt that. You keep us safe I’ll get in her head.”
Anna smiled as she again shoveled food into her mouth.
Alan laughed. “Eat, get your gear.”
“May I stay?” Rio asked.
Anna nodded. “Are you sure?”
Rio nodded, “This area allows me to meditate with ease.”
Anna nodded and finished her meal, then ran to get ready.
(T)(D)(T)(F)---(T)(F)(T)(W)
Hours later Alan was staring at Anna’s gear, she was dressed in her red hoodie, a shirt that had a t-rex with grabby arms, torn jeans and steel toed boots. Of course under all of that was some of the best light armor that the Sixth World could afford with some bonuses only a very mean man could obtain for his goddaughter.
“Punk.” Alan nodded.
Anna smiled. “Sheena is a punk rocker.”
Alan rolled his eyes, “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised given your sisters.”
Anna giggled. “At least Arlina was a proper lady.”
Alan burst into a fit of raucous laughter then stopped. “Oh, you’re serious.”
Anna blinked. “What was she for you?”
“Rebellious adult daughter who only listened to dad when she and her boyfriend caused more trouble to explode from tiny issues.” Alan smiled. “And a loyal daughter who went out of her way to protect her dad.”
Anna smiled. “She really was brave.”
Alan nodded. “Always was. She’s smiling on you kiddo.”
“All right.” The pilot said from the front of their plane. “We’re getting to the drop zone.”
“Awesome.” Alan smiled.
“Drop zone?” Anna asked.
“We’re jumping!” Alan smiled with a deeply disturbingly happy laugh as he handed his daughter a parachute and hit a button that opened the rear of the large plane they were on.
“We can fly!” Anna shouted.
Alan nodded as he put on his parachute, smiled and walked to the edge. “God I love a good jump!”
Anna watched as her father leaped out of the plane. Anna shook her head and dropped the parachute, ran forward and dove forwards as Hong Long roared to life around her. She looked over to see her father shaking his head, his parachute was still not deployed. He leaned into his dive, much to Anna’s shock. She and Hong Long Lurched forward, careening towards the ground, faster and faster. She watched her father’s parachute open two thirds of the way down. Then she felt the world pull on her less and Hong Long slowed down as a purple energy wave washed over them both. Then she passed her father’s parachute and he was no longer in it, he was now rocketing towards the ground.
“CHEATER!” Anna roared as she tried to push Hong Long’s power forward. She focused hard and grit her teeth as she watched Hong Long’s scales and mane turn golden, and they plowed straight through the field and past Alan, straight to a landing position on the ground.
Hong Long coiled and sat up straight to howl in victory.
A few seconds later Alan landed with just a flutter of the ragged edges of his now dull blue jacket. He looked his daughter and her tulpa over, then nodded in approval.
“So this is what Sayain energy does to your dragon...” Alan observed.
Hong Long nodded happily.
“Okay then.” Alan smiled, “Let’s see how much you’ve learned.”
Anna stared at her father. “What?”
“Find our target.” Alan smiled.
“I thought I was our defense.” Anna crossed her arms.
“Kid I can make a barrier that it takes a God of Thunder to break.” Alan snorted. “And I want to see you work.”
Anna gave a huff but closed her eyes to try and focus. She reached out as far as she could, which was admittedly a lot farther than it used to be. She could now reach out close to seven or eight kilometers. She felt nothing but random animals skittering and hunting, but nothing abnormally aggressive. She looked at her father and shook her head.
“Really?” Alan took a breath. “Can’t reach that far I guess.”
Anna nodded. “About eight kilometers at my highest focus.”
Alan nodded, “Well then we’re heading that way.”
“Is it that way?” Anna asked.
“Maybe!” Alan smiled.
Anna rolled her eyes but followed her father, pulling Hong Long back into her being. She was also really regretting wearing her hoodie as they had landed in a jungle, likely near the border of Central and South America. They walked for hours before Alan finally stopped and paused.
“What’s wrong?” Anna asked.
“What do you hear?” Alan asked.
Anna stopped and heard nothing. The animals had gone silent.
“There’s a predator nearby.” Alan said.
Anna focused and felt a mind focused on them. It was watching and stalking from above.
“Do they hunt in trees?” Anna asked,
“No.” Alan sighed, “They don’t.”
“Then what’s hunting us?” Anna asked as a tremble of fear rolled down her spine.
“Something that’s about to make a horrible mistake.” Alan sighed. “This one doesn’t belong here.”
“NO!” The voice of Ragnis bellowed as he appeared high in the trees and tossed the stalker to the ground. He then followed the creature and lopped its right arm off at the shoulder. “It doesn’t.”
Alan pulled the arm to him and with more than enough force to turn the bones in the arm to mush, launched it skyward where it exploded in a brilliant explosion about a minute later, well above the atmosphere.
The creature laid on the ground, clearly in shock. Alan wrenched a metallic mask that was covered in bones, off the face of the green-blooded stalker. Anna saw the crab-like face and flinched, she remembered the movie this creature was from.
“This is a yautja.” Alan explained.
“I thought it was a Predator.” Anna asked.
“That’s the name of the movie.” Alan said. “These guys can be a pain or a threat.” He bent down to inspect the alien’s face.
Anna felt something hungry approaching and pressed herself against a large tree.
Ragnis moved and pulled a trident from his back which he used to pin the creature to the ground through its gut.
“Bad-blood.” Alan nodded and pointed to a burn on the alien’s forehead. “He’s been disowned by his clan for breaking sacred rules. Likely hunting young prey or unarmed prey.”
“And he’s not from the neighborhood.” Ragnis scoffed. “Honestly, she tried this? I’m bored.”
“Get him out of here, will you?” Alan asked, “We have an Indominous Rex to find.”
“Dad.” Anna nodded towards where she felt the large hunger coming from.
“Well, enjoy the hunt!” Ragnis said as he winked and vanished with the hunter.
Alan focused ahead and nodded to Anna. “Now you take the defensive.”
Anna nodded and stood next to her father. She felt another set of eyes looking at her, then another set of eyes and she froze for a moment.
“There’s a second one, dad.” Anna hissed.
“Of course this one’s social with a sibling.” Alan nodded. “Okay, so we need to take one each.”
“Dad?” Anna looked at her father.
“What have you fought?” Alan asked. “You stood up to Daleks. To Dinal. We just need to calm them down.”
Anna nodded and focused, not bringing Hong Long forward, she did not want to be seen as aggressive to whichever of these dinosaurs ended up benign her opponent.
She watched for a few minutes and then the jungle blinked and nodded at her. Then jaws caming rushing at her and her father and they each went a different direction.

Spring-heeled Jack
Spring-heeled Jack is an entity in English folklore of the Victorian era. The first claimed sighting of Spring-heeled Jack was in 1837.[1] Later sightings were reported all over the United Kingdom and were especially prevalent in suburban London, the Midlands) and Scotland.[2]
There are many theories about the nature and identity of Spring-heeled Jack. This urban legend was very popular in its time, due to the tales of his bizarre appearance and ability to make extraordinary leaps, to the point that he became the topic of several works of fiction.
Spring-heeled Jack was described by people who claimed to have seen him as having a terrifying and frightful appearance, with diabolical physiognomy, clawed hands, and eyes that "resembled red balls of fire". One report claimed that, beneath a black cloak, he wore a helmet and a tight-fitting white garment like an oilskin. Many stories also mention a "Devil-like" aspect. Others said he was tall and thin, with the appearance of a gentleman. Several reports mention that he could breathe out blue and white flames and that he wore sharp metallic claws at his fingertips. At least two people claimed that he was able to speak comprehensible English.

Precedents

In the early 19th century, there were reports of ghosts that stalked the streets of London. These human-like figures were described as pale; it was believed that they stalked and preyed on lone pedestrians. The stories told of these figures formed part of a distinct ghost tradition in London which, some writers have argued, formed the foundation of the later legend of Spring-heeled Jack.[3]
The most important of these early entities was the Hammersmith Ghost, which in 1803 and 1804 was reported in Hammersmith on the western fringes of London; it would later reappear in 1824. Another apparition, the Southampton ghost, was also reported as assaulting individuals in the night. This particular spirit bore many of the characteristics of Spring-heeled Jack, and was reported as jumping over houses and being over 10 ft (3.0 m) tall.[3]

Early reports

The first alleged sightings of Spring-heeled Jack were made in London in 1837 and the last reported sighting is said in most of the secondary literature to have been made in Liverpool in 1904.[4][5]
According to much later accounts, in October 1837 a girl by the name of Mary Stevens was walking to Lavender Hill, where she was working as a servant, after visiting her parents in Battersea. On her way through Clapham Common, a strange figure leapt at her from a dark alley. After immobilising her with a tight grip of his arms, he began to kiss her face, while ripping her clothes and touching her flesh with his claws, which were, according to her deposition, "cold and clammy as those of a corpse". In panic, the girl screamed, making the attacker quickly flee from the scene. The commotion brought several residents who immediately launched a search for the aggressor, but he could not be found.[6]
The next day, the leaping character is said to have chosen a very different victim near Mary Stevens' home, inaugurating a method that would reappear in later reports: he jumped in the way of a passing carriage, causing the coachman to lose control, crash, and severely injure himself. Several witnesses claimed that he escaped by jumping over a 9 ft (2.7 m) high wall while cackling with a high-pitched, ringing laughter.[6]
Gradually, the news of the strange character spread, and soon the press and the public gave him the name "Spring-heeled Jack".[7]

📷A public session at the Mansion House, London (c. 1840).
A few months after these first sightings, on 9 January 1838, the Lord Mayor of London, Sir John Cowan), revealed at a public session held in the Mansion House an anonymous complaint that he had received several days earlier, which he had withheld in the hope of obtaining further information. The correspondent, who signed the letter "a resident of Peckham", wrote:
It appears that some individuals (of, as the writer believes, the highest ranks of life) have laid a wager with a mischievous and foolhardy companion, that he durst not take upon himself the task of visiting many of the villages near London in three different disguises—a ghost, a bear, and a devil; and moreover, that he will not enter a gentleman's gardens for the purpose of alarming the inmates of the house. The wager has, however, been accepted, and the unmanly villain has succeeded in depriving seven ladies of their senses, two of whom are not likely to recover, but to become burdens to their families. At one house the man rang the bell, and on the servant coming to open door, this worse than brute stood in no less dreadful figure than a spectre clad most perfectly. The consequence was that the poor girl immediately swooned, and has never from that moment been in her senses. The affair has now been going on for some time, and, strange to say, the papers are still silent on the subject. The writer has reason to believe that they have the whole history at their finger-ends but, through interested motives, are induced to remain silent.[8]
Though the Lord Mayor seemed fairly sceptical, a member of the audience confirmed that "servant girls about Kensington, Hammersmith and Ealing, tell dreadful stories of this ghost or devil". The matter was reported in The Times on 9 January, other national papers on 10 January and, on the day after that, the Lord Mayor showed a crowded gathering a pile of letters from various places in and around London complaining of similar "wicked pranks". The quantity of letters that poured into the Mansion House suggests that the stories were widespread in suburban London. One writer said several young women in Hammersmith had been frightened into "dangerous fits" and some "severely wounded by a sort of claws the miscreant wore on his hands". Another correspondent claimed that in Stockwell, Brixton, Camberwell and Vauxhall several people had died of fright and others had had fits; meanwhile, another reported that the trickster had been repeatedly seen in Lewisham and Blackheath.[citation needed]
The Lord Mayor himself was in two minds about the affair: he thought "the greatest exaggerations" had been made, and that it was quite impossible "that the ghost performs the feats of a devil upon earth", but on the other hand someone he trusted had told him of a servant girl at Forest Hill who had been scared into fits by a figure in a bear's skin; he was confident the person or persons involved in this "pantomime display" would be caught and punished.[9] The police were instructed to search for the individual responsible, and rewards were offered.[citation needed]
A peculiar report from The Brighton Gazette, which appeared in the 14 April 1838 edition of The Times, related how a gardener in Rosehill, Sussex, had been terrified by a creature of unknown nature. The Times wrote that "Spring-heeled Jack has, it seems, found his way to the Sussex coast", even though the report bore little resemblance to other accounts of Jack. The incident occurred on 13 April, when it appeared to a gardener "in the shape of a bear or some other four-footed animal". Having attracted the gardener's attention by a growl, it then climbed the garden wall and ran along it on all fours, before jumping down and chasing the gardener for some time. After terrifying the gardener, the apparition scaled the wall and made its exit.[10]

Scales and Alsop reports

📷Illustration of Spring-heeled Jack, from the 1867 serial Spring-heel'd Jack: The Terror of London
Perhaps the best known of the alleged incidents involving Spring-heeled Jack were the attacks on two teenage girls, Lucy Scales and Jane Alsop. The Alsop report was widely covered by the newspapers, including a piece in The Times,[11] while fewer reports appeared in relation to the attack on Scales. The press coverage of these two attacks helped to raise the profile of Spring-heeled Jack.[citation needed]

Alsop case

Jane Alsop reported that on the night of 19 February 1838, she answered the door of her father's house to a man claiming to be a police officer, who told her to bring a light, claiming "we have caught Spring-heeled Jack here in the lane". She brought the person a candle, and noticed that he wore a large cloak. The moment she had handed him the candle, however, he threw off the cloak and "presented a most hideous and frightful appearance", vomiting blue and white flame from his mouth while his eyes resembled "red balls of fire". Miss Alsop reported that he wore a large helmet and that his clothing, which appeared to be very tight-fitting, resembled white oilskin. Without saying a word he caught hold of her and began tearing her gown with his claws which she was certain were "of some metallic substance". She screamed for help, and managed to get away from him and ran towards the house. He caught her on the steps and tore her neck and arms with his claws. She was rescued by one of her sisters, after which her assailant fled.[4][12]

Scales case

On 28 February 1838,[13] nine days after the attack on Miss Alsop, 18-year-old Lucy Scales and her sister were returning home after visiting their brother, a butcher who lived in a respectable part of Limehouse. Miss Scales stated in her deposition to the police that as she and her sister were passing along Green Dragon Alley, they observed a person standing in an angle of the passage. She was walking in front of her sister at the time, and just as she came up to the person, who was wearing a large cloak, he spurted "a quantity of blue flame" in her face, which deprived her of her sight, and so alarmed her, that she instantly dropped to the ground, and was seized with violent fits which continued for several hours.[14]
Her brother added that on the evening in question, he had heard the loud screams of one of his sisters moments after they had left his house and on running up Green Dragon Alley he found his sister Lucy on the ground in a fit, with her sister attempting to hold and support her. She was taken home, and he then learned from his other sister what had happened. She described Lucy's assailant as being of tall, thin, and gentlemanly appearance, covered in a large cloak, and carrying a small lamp or bull's eye lantern similar to those used by the police. The individual did not speak nor did he try to lay hands on them, but instead walked quickly away. Every effort was made by the police to discover the author of these and similar outrages, and several persons were questioned, but were set free.[14]

Popularisation

The Times reported the alleged attack on Jane Alsop on 2 March 1838 under the heading "The Late Outrage at Old Ford".[11] This was followed with an account of the trial of one Thomas Millbank, who, immediately after the reported attack on Jane Alsop, had boasted in the Morgan's Arms that he was Spring-heeled Jack. He was arrested and tried at Lambeth Street court. The arresting officer was James Lea, who had earlier arrested William Corder, the Red Barn Murderer. Millbank had been wearing white overalls and a greatcoat, which he dropped outside the house, and the candle he dropped was also found. He escaped conviction only because Jane Alsop insisted her attacker had breathed fire, and Millbank admitted he could do no such thing. Most of the other accounts were written long after the date; contemporary newspapers do not mention them.[citation needed]

After these incidents, Spring-heeled Jack became one of the most popular characters of the period. His alleged exploits were reported in the newspapers and became the subject of several penny dreadfuls and plays performed in the cheap theatres that abounded at the time. The devil was even renamed "Spring-heeled Jack" in some Punch and Judy shows, as recounted by Henry Mayhew in his London Labour and the London Poor:
This here is Satan,-we might say the devil, but that ain't right, and gennelfolks don't like such words. He is now commonly called 'Spring-heeled Jack;' or the 'Rossian Bear,' – that's since the war. — Henry Mayhew, London Labour and the London Poor, p. 52[15]
But, even as his fame was growing, reports of Spring-heeled Jack's appearances became less frequent if more widespread. In 1843, however, a wave of sightings swept the country again. A report from Northamptonshire described him as "the very image of the Devil himself, with horns and eyes of flame", and in East Anglia reports of attacks on drivers of mail coaches became common. In July 1847 "a Spring-heeled Jack investigation" in Teignmouth, Devon led to a Captain Finch being convicted of two charges of assault against women during which he is said to have been "disguised in a skin coat, which had the appearance of bullock's hide, skullcap, horns and mask".[16] The legend was linked with the phenomenon of the "Devil's Footprints" which appeared in Devon in February 1855.[citation needed]

Last reports

In the beginning of the 1870s, Spring-heeled Jack was reported again in several places distant from each other. In November 1872, the News of the World reported that Peckham was "in a state of commotion owing to what is known as the "Peckham Ghost", a mysterious figure, quite alarming in appearance". The editorial pointed out that it was none other than "Spring-heeled Jack, who terrified a past generation".[17] Similar stories were published in The Illustrated Police News. In April and May 1873, it reported there were numerous sightings in Sheffield of the "Park Ghost", which locals also came to identify as Spring-heeled Jack.[18]

Aldershot

📷North Camp in Aldershot as it looked in 1866.
This news was followed by more reported sightings, until in August 1877 one of the most notable reports about Spring-heeled Jack came from a group of soldiers in Aldershot Garrison. This story went as follows: a sentry on duty at the North Camp peered into the darkness, his attention attracted by a peculiar figure "advancing towards him." The soldier issued a challenge, which went unheeded, and the figure came up beside him and delivered several slaps to his face. A guard shot at him, with no visible effect; some sources claim that the soldier may have fired blanks) at him, others that he missed or fired warning shots. The strange figure then disappeared into the surrounding darkness "with astonishing bounds."[19][20][21]
Lord Ernest Hamilton's 1922 memoir Forty Years On mentions the Aldershot appearances of Spring-heeled Jack; however, he (apparently erroneously) says that they occurred in the winter of 1879 after his regiment, the 60th Rifles, had moved to Aldershot, and that similar appearances had occurred when the regiment was barracked at Colchester in the winter of 1878. He adds that the panic became so great at Aldershot that sentries were issued ammunition and ordered to shoot "the night terror" on sight, following which the appearances ceased. Hamilton thought that the appearances were actually pranks, carried out by one of his fellow officers, a Lieutenant Alfrey.[22][23] However, there is no record of Alfrey ever being court-martialled for the offence.[24]

Lincolnshire

In the autumn of 1877, Spring-heeled Jack was reportedly seen at Newport Arch, in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, wearing a sheep skin. An angry mob supposedly chased him and cornered him, and just as in Aldershot a while before, residents fired at him to no effect. As usual, he was said to have made use of his leaping abilities to lose the crowd and disappear once again.[25]

Liverpool

By the end of the 19th century the reported sightings of Spring-heeled Jack were moving towards the north west of England. Around 1888, in Everton, north Liverpool, he allegedly appeared on the rooftop of Saint Francis Xavier's Church in Salisbury Street. In 1904 there were reports of appearances in nearby William Henry Street.[26]

Aftermath and impact upon Victorian popular culture

The vast urban legend built around Spring-heeled Jack influenced many aspects of Victorian life, especially in contemporary popular culture. For decades, especially in London, his name was equated with the bogeyman, as a means of scaring children into behaving by telling them if they were not good, Spring-heeled Jack would leap up and peer in at them through their bedroom windows, by night.
However, it was in fictional entertainment where the legend of Spring-heeled Jack exerted the most extensive influence, owing to his allegedly extraordinary nature. Three pamphlet publications, purportedly based on the real events, appeared almost immediately, during January and February, 1838. They were not advertised as fiction, though they likely were at least partly so. The only known copies were reported to have perished when the British Library was hit during The Blitz, but their catalog still lists the first one.
The character was written into a number of penny dreadful stories during the latter half of the 19th century, initially as a villain and then in increasingly heroic roles. By the early 1900s he was being represented as a costumed, altruistic avenger of wrongs and protector of the innocent, effectively becoming a precursor to pulp fiction and then comic book superheroes.

Theories

No one was ever caught and identified as Spring-heeled Jack; combined with the extraordinary abilities attributed to him and the very long period during which he was reportedly at large, this has led to numerous and varied theories of his nature and identity.[citation needed] While several researchers seek a normal explanation for the events, other authors explore the more fantastic details of the story to propose different kinds of paranormal speculation.[citation needed]

Sceptical positions

Sceptical investigators have dismissed the stories of Spring-heeled Jack as mass hysteria which developed around various stories of a bogeyman or devil which have been around for centuries, or from exaggerated urban myths about a man who clambered over rooftops claiming that the Devil was chasing him.[27]
📷Henry de La Poer Beresford, 3rd Marquess of Waterford (1840)
Other researchers believe that some individual(s) may have been behind its origins, being followed by imitators later on.[28] Spring-heeled Jack was widely considered not to be a supernatural creature, but rather one or more persons with a macabre sense of humour.[4] This idea matches the contents of the letter to the Lord Mayor, which accused a group of young aristocrats as the culprits, after an irresponsible wager.[4] A popular rumour circulating as early as 1840 pointed to an Irish nobleman, the Marquess of Waterford, as the main suspect.[4] Haining) suggested this may have been due to him having previously had bad experiences with women and police officers.[29]
The Marquess was frequently in the news in the late 1830s for drunken brawling, brutal jokes and vandalism, and was said to do anything for a bet; his irregular behaviour and his contempt for women earned him the title "the Mad Marquis", and it is also known that he was in the London area by the time the first incidents took place. In 1880 he was named as the perpetrator by E. Cobham Brewer, who said that the Marquess "used to amuse himself by springing on travellers unawares, to frighten them, and from time to time others have followed his silly example."[30][31] In 1842, the Marquess married and settled in Curraghmore House, County Waterford, and reportedly led an exemplary life until he died in a riding accident in 1859.[citation needed]
Sceptical investigators have asserted that the story of Spring-heeled Jack was exaggerated and altered through mass hysteria, a process in which many sociological issues may have contributed. These include unsupported rumours, superstition, oral tradition, sensationalist publications, and a folklore rich in tales of fairies and strange roguish creatures. Gossip of alleged leaping and fire-spitting powers, his alleged extraordinary features and his reputed skill in evading apprehension captured the mind of the superstitious public—increasingly so with the passing of time, which gave the impression that Spring-heeled Jack had suffered no effects from ageing. As a result, a whole urban legend was built around the character, being reflected by contemporary publications, which in turn fuelled this popular perception.[32]

Paranormal conjectures

📷Spring-heeled Jack illustrated on the cover of the 1904 serial Spring-heeled Jack
A variety of wildly speculative paranormal explanations have been proposed to explain the origin of Spring-heeled Jack, including that he was an extraterrestrial entity with a non-human appearance and features (e.g., retro-reflective red eyes, or phosphorus breath) and a superhuman agility deriving from life on a high-gravity world, with his jumping ability and strange behaviour,[33] and that he was a demon, accidentally or purposefully summoned into this world by practitioners of the occult, or who made himself manifest simply to create spiritual turmoil.[34]
Fortean authors, particularly Loren Coleman[35] and Jerome Clark,[36] list "Spring-heeled Jack" in a category named "phantom attackers", with another well-known example being the "Mad Gasser of Mattoon". Typical "phantom attackers" appear to be human, and may be perceived as prosaic criminals, but may display extraordinary abilities (as in Spring-heeled Jack's jumps, which, it is widely noted, would break the ankles of a human who replicated them) and/or cannot be caught by authorities. Victims commonly experience the "attack" in their bedrooms, homes or other seemingly secure enclosures. They may report being pinned or paralysed, or on the other hand describe a "siege" in which they fought off a persistent intruder or intruders. Many reports can readily be explained psychologically, most notably as the "Old Hag" phenomenon, recorded in folklore and recognised by psychologists as a form of hallucination. In the most problematic cases, an "attack" is witnessed by several people and substantiated by some physical evidence, but the attacker cannot be verified to exist.[citation needed]

Counterpart in Prague

A similar figure known as Pérák, the Spring Man of Prague was reported to have been seen in Czechoslovakia around 1939–1945. As writers such as Mike Dash have shown, the elusiveness and supernatural leaping abilities attributed to Pérák bear a close resemblance to those exhibited by Spring-heeled Jack, and distinct parallels can be drawn between the two entities.[28] The stories of Pérák provide a useful example of how the traits of Spring-heeled Jack have a broad cultural resonance in urban folklore. Pérák, like Spring-heeled Jack, went on to become a folklore hero, even starring in several animated superhero cartoons, fighting the SS, the earliest of which is Jiří Trnka's 1946 film Pérák a SS or Springman and the SS.[37]

In contemporary popular culture

The character of Spring-heeled Jack has been revived or referenced in a variety of 20th and 21st century media, including:
Spring-Heeled Jack (1989) – a combination prose and graphic novel by Philip Pullman in which Spring-heeled Jack saves a group of plucky orphans from the malevolent Mack the Knife.[38]
The Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack (2010) – an alternate history novel by author Mark Hodder, portraying Spring-Heeled Jack as a time traveler.[39]
The Springheel Saga (2011) – a three-series audio drama produced by the Wireless Theatre Company.[40]

No trans fats are listed on the nutrition label online for that product. Is this already known? Now I’m nervous that their sauces may have trans fats also that are not listed on the nutrition labels.

2023.05.30 01:37 EspowaveAnime Challenger Approaching: Amber Glides In! (Genshin Impact series)

Why?
Genshin Impact is an ever-expansive and ever-growing game released on multiple devices, such as the PS4 and PS5, Android, IOS, and Windows. But there is a place that it said to release in the near future- the infamous Nintendo Switch. Now, why should Genshin Impact of all games be in Super Smash Bros.?
As we learned in (I think) 2021, Steve got added into Smash Ultimate, but what most fans don’t realize is how big this character is. Minecraft is on not only the Switch, but on most Playstations, most XBOXs, some other Nintendo products, and on Windows and even Mobile! Steve is the binder of all of these platforms and will allow for multiple series to get in Super Smash Bros! Disclaimer: all series that are on other game platforms have to be on the Nintendo Switch platform. There is not one example of a game that isn’t introduced through the Fighter Pass that is on or was on a Nintendo Platform at least once. But, as mentioned, Genshin WILL be, leaving any character there fair game. So, let’s take the most remembered character from the beginning of the game, Amber, the Gliding Champion!
Backstory!
Considered to be a rising star within the Knights of Favonius, Amber is a master of gliding, winning her the Gliding Champion title on three separate occasions. Her stories and peers have described her as an optimistic and passionate young girl, even assisting the Traveller and making them feel at home. “At times, however,” the story states, “her excessive energy can make her quite the troublemaker.” She still to this day holds firm to her lost grandfather’s teachings of responsibility and trust. Meeting her as the protagonist was the first friend you would have ever made, and it would last long!
Stats And Others!
Amber will definitely use her bow slinging skills in Super Smash Bros., so she will be a very projectile heavy attacker. Think of Byleth’s moves but all involving a bow instead of just some. Her firecracker-like personality should also translate into an energetic and fast character, with possible middle-of-the-pack weight, and using a bow has to be pretty tricky, huh? So, this is what I came up with:
Zoner + Precision
This fighter archetype uses the trickiness of shooting targets as a base, with the more you play the character, the more knowledgeable you get! And no, Amber, despite having the Zoner archetype that houses multiple slow characters, will be an energetic and fast paced character.
So, what about stats?
Weight: 100 (Cloud) Size: 4.5/10
Walk Speed: 0.979 (Kirby-Hero) Frame Data: 3/10
Initial Dash Speed: 2.55 (Marth) Damage: 6.5/10
Run Speed: 1.91 (Toon Link-Mii Brawler) KO Power: 9/10
Air Speed: 1.341 (Jigglypuff-Yoshi) Combo: 1/10
Fall Speed: 1.8 (Mega Man) Recovery: 5/10
Alt 1: Amber in her 5-Star Outrider costume.
Alt 2: Amber but colored like the 100% Outrider costume.
Alt 3: Amber in a black clothes, with gray socks, green hair, and a gold hat. This references Collei.
Alt 4: Amber with aqua clothes, all-white socks, blue hair and a gray hat. This is a reference to Faruzan.
Alt 5: Amber with turquoise pants, a gray shirt, black socks, and a brown hat and hair. This references Gorou.
Alt 6: Amber with black clothes, purple socks, a lavender hat, and blonde hair. This references Fischl.
Alt 7: Amber with silver shorts, a white shirt, gray socks, a blue hat, and brunette hair. This is a reference to Tartaglia
Alt 8: Amber in purple shorts, a lavender shirt, indigo socks, purple ears, and black hair. This references Tighnari.
Attacks!
Jab: Amber does a quick forward punch, then a roundhouse kick, and finishes off with a blow from her bow. By spamming the A-Button, multiple arrows are flung.
Dash Attack: Amber grabs a glider and flies forward with her legs out, which can kick the opponent. This travels a very long distance, but is very easy to see coming and constantly gets weaker and weaker.
Forward Tilt: Amber grabs her bow and swipes it up from 5:00 to 1:00. This isn’t a reliable spam move, but great for punishing.
Up Tilt: Amber grabs her bow and twirls it in a 360 degree circle above her head. This is a highly spammable and weak move.
Down Tilt: Amber swipes her bow along the ground like a sword, which can trip opponents. Highly spammable as well.
Forward Smash: Amber charges her bow to shoot three arrows, all going in different directions unless charged, which has them fire together! These are not projectiles, just extended disjointed hitboxes! The arrows don’t deal very much damage when split apart, so firing this when charged is very helpful!
Up Smash: Very similar to the forward smash! Amber charges her bow to shoot three arrows, all going in different directions unless charged which has them fire together. They don’t deal much by themselves so charging them is very helpful, blah blah blah. This time she just shoots them overhead!
Down Smash: Amber crouches down and, when charged, kicks her legs out on both sides before jumping up from the ground to stand up again. Believe or not, the hardest hitting part of the move is her get up, which can spike opponents on ledges!
Neutral Air: Literally Byleth’s neutral air. (That was easy!)
Forward Air: My least favorite term in all of SSBU, Amber does a s*x kick, or Mario’s neutral air. (Don’t ask me why it’s called that!)
Back Air: Amber turns her body sideways and kicks at a 9:00/3:00 angle, which bounces her forwards if she hits anyone.
Up Air: Amber flips upside down and does an indescribable kick where she kind of does a backflip.
Down Air: Like Inkling’s down air, she pokes down her bow which, at the very very tip, can spike.
Grab: Amber uses something that she would normally not use: an arrow that is connected to a string that can pull opponents in! This wouldn’t be a tether, just a disjointed hitbox.
Pummel: Amber punches with her right hand in the opponent's face or chest depending on size.
Up Throw: Amber throws the opponent up and shoots an arrow up.
Forward Throw: Amber drops the opponent and kicks them away.
Down Throw: Amber lays the opponent down and uses a small version of Fiery Rain that launches the opponent away.
Back Throw: Amber throws the opponent under her legs as she does a leapfrog. This launches the opponent backwards.
Specials!
Neutral Special: Sharpshooter
Shoot an arrow forwards that can be angled slightly. This move is a slightly spammable move that is a great poking tool. Amber can even dodge forwards slightly while using it, like Joker’s neutral special!
Side Special: Explosive Puppet
Send out a cute little bunny that will lock onto the closest foe, and explode next to them! Use this to distract the opponent so Amber can go in for the stock! Only one can appear on screen at a time, and each has a detonation time of one second when they reach the opponent’s location.
Up Special: Wind Glider
Like Steve’s, use an artificial pair of rings and glide forwards. This, however, is more similar to how it works in Genshin Impact, meaning that it doesn’t go wheee and is more controlled. This is also like Mr. Game & Watch’s up special in that as soon as you use an aerial, you go down!
Down Special: Fiery Rain
Amber shoots up an array of burning arrows into the sky that will fall onto a reticle on the ground. You can move the reticle at the cost of losing all mobility, and if you get hit you can no longer move the reticle, leaving the arrows to fall where the reticle was last. After two seconds, the arrows will fall, dealing the most amount of damage out of all the moves in Amber’s kit. Please note: Amber can be hurt by this move as well, so be cautious. This move also leaves her open and in a dangerous state.
The Final Smash!
Final Smash: Crimson Hero Of Mondstadt
Amber’s Final Smash begins like Link’s, shooting a big arrow forwards, leaving anyone who was first hit by the move to cut to a cutscene. It shows Mondstadt, infested by monsters, but then showing multiple flaming arrows falling from the sky, dealing a lot of damage to who is unluckily hit. If they are at a high enough percentage, then it will auto kill! Also the cutscene ends when Amber flies through the front of the screen.

THE TOP 7 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR NAILS
Do you want to know how to make your nails stronger? Continue reading!
All of us desire gorgeous, robust, and thick nails. They can identify our hands in a variety of ways and serve as a useful health indicator. The only issue is that they occasionally aren't as powerful as we would like them to be. Fortunately, there are methods and routines that can quickly strengthen them.

Here are the top 7 methods for making your nails stronger:

1. Reduce your exposure to water

Your nails will become brittle and fragile if they are exposed to too much water. When washing and bathing, you need to take nail wholesale supply near me precautions to shorten the amount of time that water is in touch with your nails. For this situation, gloves are acceptable.

2. Use Biotin dietary supplements

One of the B vitamins is biotin, often known as vitamin B-7 and vitamin H. Since it dissolves in water, the body does not keep it. This suggests that you must drink it consistently. They can help to make your hair, nails, and nervous system stronger and more functional. Sardines, boiled eggs, and legumes all contain it. An alternative is to take a B vitamin or a supplement.

2023.05.30 00:37 squiidsquaad It's been awhile since high school physics... Help with this circuit diagram/plan for a small wiring project

I bought some 3 prong switches (on/off/on), and I want to make a small project running them to light bulbs.
The idea is to have the front simply show the switches in a line, and with 2 small light bulbs per switch (ideally something more rustic than LEDs but I haven't gotten that far yet). The switches would rest at the mid off position, but I could flip them up and get one color bulb to light up, or down and get the other color to light up. Each bulb pair would rely only on their designated switch, and the rest wouldn't affect them turning on or off like a DC circuit.
It's been years since I've thought much about electric circuits and I would like to make this small project to get back into the subject, but as a jack of all crafty-diy subjects I love a good repurpose. I would like to chop up some of the old USB cables I have lying around and use the wiring inside. I was also hoping to make this power thru a USB port instead of a full plug or a battery.
I found a site to remind me of many of the basic equations for calculating aspects of the circuits, but I do remember there being more to it than I have been able to find information on (as I don't know the right keywords to search).
As a power source, a USB port probably has a standard input amount, but I'm not sure what it is.
The switches I have on hand are labelled
2A 250VAC
5A 120VAC
I'm assuming its volts and then AC as in AC circuits, but I'm not certain. And I don't understand why there are 2 different listings.
And I know there's a reason people use differing sizes of wire for different projects, but I don't recall learning the way to know the limit of small wire and at what points or how to tell when to use a thicker wire.
Does this circuit diagram I made look correct so far? The next step will be figuring out the math aspect of it, if I can use a USB as a power source, what type of bulbs, etc.
I would sincerely appreciate any helpful tips, corrections, or directions to some more resources if you have anything for me. Thank you for reading all this.

2023.05.30 00:11 WildWestCollectibles How to cook a delicious meal that you can have for breakfast lunch and dinner for only $1.44

Shakshuka! This recipe serves 4 with less than $6 worth of ingredients, healthy, and best of all it doesn’t taste like cardboard, it’s SO good and full of flavor! I have this multiple times a week and can’t get enough.
YouTube recipe to follow along
Ingredients (with Orange County, California prices per serving from Costco and Walmart as of 5/29/2023)
Olive oil ($0.40)
1 yellow onion ($0.85)
1 green bell pepper ($0.72)
1 serrano pepper ($0.15)
Paprika (<$0.05)
Cumin (<$0.05)
Minced Garlic ($0.10)
1 - 28oz can of whole peeled tomatoes ($1.43)
(Optional) 1 can of chickpeas
Salt (<$0.05)
4 eggs ($0.66) [24 eggs at Costco for $3.99]
Black Pepper (<$0.05)
Cilantro ($0.50)
Feta cheese ($0.40)
Toasted bread ($0.36 can be any carb of your choice)
Total cost for 4 servings: $5.77 ($1.44 per serving! I have the receipts to prove it!)
Cooking instructions:
1) chop the onions, bell pepper, and hot pepper and sauté with paprika and cumin in olive oil for around 5 minutes in medium-high heat.
2) once sautéed, add some garlic and after about 2 minutes, add the whole can of tomatoes. You can crush them while they cook with a wooden spoon. Keep stirring and taste it to add salt and seasoning to taste.
3) Here is where you can add the chickpeas if you’d like. After around 10-15 minutes, check to see if you can move the sauce and see the bottom of the pan without it being too watery. Once the sauce has thickened, drop heat to low
4) create four pockets in the sauce where you will carefully crack the 4 eggs. Add salt and pepper on the eggs and cover with a lid for 5-7 minutes
5) once egg whites are cooked and yolk is still runny, add feta cheese, cilantro and it’s ready to eat! If it’s too spicy, you can drizzle a bit of honey.
I hope you guys like it! Please reach out if you have any questions.
*Prices will vary depending on where you shop and what year you are seeing this recipe in.

2023.05.30 00:02 RedMiller1231 Seasoning peeling off

Seasoning peeling off
This is what happened after I finished deep frying some pickles, letting the pan cool and removing the grease, wiping the pan out and then cooking some smothered green beans and potatoes. I went to wash the pan after dinner and this happened. Where did I go wrong with my seasoning? I cook scrambled eggs in the same pan earlier that morning and had no problem

Spicy ground pork with pickled long beans and tenderstem broccoli
Yeah I really like my greens! The ground pork included doubanjian and pickled chillies. The long beans have been pickling for a few weeks now and have still retained their crunch but taste exquisite! As for the egg fried rice, I used half a cup of day old white long grain and jasmine rice. It almost tasted as good as takeaway stir fried rice but without the smoky "wok hei"

2023.05.29 22:28 Bedelia101 Vegan lower calorie pasta dough

I have pasta-making attachments for a KitchenAid mixer. But, there are restrictions at my house.
I’m allergic to eggs and the other family members are trying to moderate their caloric intake.
Is it tenable to make a tasty pasta dough with these ingredients? Are there changes that you’d recommend?
I plan to experiment with a small batch and tweak it from there. The initial batch might look like this:
1/4 cup whole flax seeds (or less) that I grind myself 2 Tbs (or more?) of vital wheat gluten 1 cup of oat fiber flour Greens, incorporate them according to a recipe I saw this morning.
Maybe fortify with King Arthur pasta flour, if that’s the only way to make the overall recipe hang together. At the very least, I’d use real flour to prevent sticking to the cutting board or to the parts of the pasta machine.
The recipes I’ve seen so far don’t meet the requirements to be egg-free and reduced calorie.
I love zoodles and other veggie-based substitutes, but the other folks aren’t into it. They like the konjac noodles, but, I’d still like to try my hand at homemade.
Does anyone know of a good resource for this?

2023.05.29 22:27 Aisling_The_Sapphire Subnautica: Below Zero - The Definitive No-Spoilers Guide For New Players

Updated May 2023
After changing reddit accounts and about a year since posting it, it seemed prudent to throw this up for visibility. :)
Few things are worse than not knowing what happened to a loved one. Which is what convinced Robin Ayou to get into a drop shuttle with a lifepod with basically nothing, then fire herself down onto an ocean planet where the only place that she could investigate was a tiny little patch of barely-even-land and pray she can survive long enough to find a way to get off the planet.
Nobody ever told Robin she was great at forward planning.
https://subnauticamap.io/belowzero - This map will provide direction/orientation for this guide, but BEWARE! It marks spoilers if you turn those on!

Touchdown

Once you've landed, you'll find some food and water to start you off scattered around the ship. You won't have to worry about getting cold, since standing next to your now-burning ship will warm you up and the meteors coming down don't actually paste you, they're mostly to stress you out.
Note that may not be the case later. The weather in this game is a serious thing.
Once you have your stuff, you'll find the drop pod on your HUD. Don't go straight to it, though. As soon as you hit the water, look for an indentation in the ground. You'll find some copper in there. Then, follow the northern glacial wall (That's to your right when you're looking at your lifepod) until you find a small cave, which will have some silver and gold. That'll get you started off nicely. Get to your lifepod, take a look at your fabricator. You'll find that the items you have blueprints for can be pinned to the top-right in your PDA by clicking on them in the blueprints tab, a useful feature when hunting for materials.
Your goals right now are your basic survival tools. Note that the kelp forest is a bad place to hold your stuff in your hand. The sea monkeys are kleptomaniacs and will gank your stuff. You can totally get it back though, it just means chasing after them a bit, which is annoying and wastes time. However, if you pull out a flare and hold it in front of them, they freak out and run away from you for a little bit.

Time To Get Rolling

Your first task, as indicated by the PDA, is to find Delta Island. This becomes relatively easy once you find a compass. If you've gone to the emergency cache you'll have the beacon blueprint so stock up on them before traveling so you can mark things. You're going to be making a lot of these but since you can toggle them it's not so bad, you'll just need a lot of beacons. Its south of where the drop pod lands. As you spread out your searching range you'll find that the sea floor drops down among twisty coral structures.
This area is called Twisty Bridges. It's the main go-to for coral samples and you'll want those. There's small bits of Alterra stuff scattered around the area. It's here you'll find mobile vehicle bay, sea truck and seaglide fragments. When you've been in the area for a bit, you'll hear what sounds like an SOS. It's worth checking that out and you'll find that this spot goes deeper than you might suspect. Makes you wonder what's down there, doesn't it?
Beyond Twisty Bridges lies the thermal spires, an area of volcanic activity and thermal smokers. Many sea truck fragments are here. The wildlife here is noisy and menacing sounding but if you don't hang out next to them they're easy to avoid. Smacking one with a blade will made it instantly turn and get the hell away from you. They don't like being hit. On the border between thermal spires and twisty bridges someplace is a small foundation platform with external grow beds for you to scan, but you can get these at Omega Station later if you're not sweating on it. There are large crevices and a few volcanic fissures out here. Beware the heat vents, but exploring those areas can pay off, later.
On the island, you'll find blueprints you need, as well as some materials like sulfur and horseshoe nuts. The latter are very useful to plant in the seabase you'll be wanting. Take care to look around thoroughly for blueprints you'll find useful, as not all of them are inside the buildings. Also, keep a sharp eye out for music disks which you'll find scattered throughout the game, especially in bases.
On the south-west corner of the island is a precursor artifact you can scan. Look for the beach with all the pengwings on it. The habitat builder can be found on a box outside Delta Station. Make sure to scan the map inside the sea base. There's also a PDA up by the comms tower.

Let's Go Explorin'

So, by now you've visited Delta Island, have had a good look around Twisty Bridges and you've probably discovered the sea monkey caves in Kelp Forest. If you haven't gone exploring in those, you really ought to. You'll find more MVB fragments there but that's also where the propulsion cannon blueprint can be found, the laser cutter, as well as a fair amount of gold and some precursor artifacts as well. Once that's all done with and taken care of, you've probably got at least a tiny seabase, but if you don't... what are you doing?
Go on, shoo. Go make a base.
...
Okay, got one now? Good! Hopefully it's someplace nice. Your basic sea truck can't get down to where you want to be going next but a depth module will take care of that. A MkII depth module will let you get to the very bottom of where you want to go. Where do you want to go? Koppa Mine. You'll find it on the western side of the island. Take care to look around when you find the door eventually, since there is a databox just inside the main doors, before you head down. It has the moonpool and will allow you to get that much earlier than you would through scanning it.
To drive the seatruck inside the mine, drive north from the entrance of Koppa mine, you'll come across a volcanic fissure in the seafloor nearby which has JUST enough space for you to fit your seatruck through it. The fissure leads right into Koppa Mine, allowing you to drive the seatruck inside!
The other alternative is actually spare air tanks. Totally a viable solution so long as you remember to refill them by equipping them once you're out of the water. You can swap them out mid-dive and extend your breathing time, which is handy since the prawn fragment blueprints you require are kinda far down there. If you're free diving in this way, note that the bottom chamber of the mine has a hole in the ceiling leading to a small cave system which will lead you back to the surface, as well as having a number of oxygen plants to keep you from choking on the way. The entrance to that is almost right next to the Delta Station docks.
Also note that Site Zero, which has useful blueprints, can be found by hugging the northern glacial wall and heading east along it. You can find it by checking breaks in the ice, one of them leads up to a small hidden cave where the base lies. But if you don't find it, you'll be directed here later. It just has some useful things to scan and a lantern fruit tree. There is a music disk here.

Way Down South

By now you've probably answered the SoS. If not, go do that. As you hang out with Al-An, he'll give you prompts to artifacts that you haven't found yet, if you dawdle in looking for the required number. At this point you should have the following:
Building the Prawn is surprisingly easy, but requires lithium, a material you probably haven't seen a lot of yet. There's a little scattered around in thermal spires, but only a little. You can find a lot at purple vents, but be careful to avoid the doom shrimp. A chelicarate hangs out here. There are other things in this area which are relevant to you which you'll want to mark out for later. There is a small seatruck crash site with a variety of fragments out here, if you find it, look around carefully for the music disk that's here.
Following the marker for the unknown pilots last position, you will find a green area rich in confusing cave systems. This area is the lilypads zone. Old girl can be found down near the signal, just look for the shimmering things on the wall, the hive minds. She's near them. Grab the seatruck defense module she has in there. Be sure to pick up the databox directly outside her base to get the stillsuit as well and if you follow the caves down where they turn blue you'll stumble on an old thermal plant of hers, where another databox lies. There's fragments scattered all over this zone as well as The mercury II stern, which lays on the border between lilypads and purple vents, as well as the bow, which is a little further in on the western side of lilypads. Be sure to explore the area thoroughly and take note of the massive crevasse near the middle of the zone. Inside the chunk of land here is Omega Lab, which will net you the external grow beds, nuclear plant, nuclear disposal as well as a couple new beds and the antenna plants. It's in this area you'll need to search for nickel later, so building a scanner station here is a good idea. Deep Lilypads holds an Al-An body part you'll require. Deep Lilypads is also the only place you can acquire the materials to manufacture benzene.
Don't go too close to the Lily Paddlers, unless you like being off your face, in which case go say hi, it's hilarious. Trust me. ;D
In order to disable the satellite for Dances-With-Reapers, you're going to need to wreck dive the Mercury II. Two of its sections can be found in purple vents, while the bow - the largest - can be found in Lilypads, west of Omega Labs floating island. You'll need the laser cutter for this. Your goal is to scan the parallel processors in the wreck, but there's all kinds of really useful stuff in there too, not to mention all the titanium. ALL the titanium. So be sure to drop beacons on these things, bring a spare air tank and bring your pathfinder tool. If you don't have the pathfinder tool, go look around in the caves full of emeralds between Phi Robotics docks and Phi Robotics itself. There is one up on a small ridge in one of those caves. If you can't find it, don't worry though, just bring flares and use them as breadcrumbs while diving to prevent yourself from getting too lost. The alien containment tank, reinforced dive suit, parallel processor can be found in these. A music disk is in the bow section on a bridge console.

LAND HO!

Aaah, glacial basin. How I hate thee. The basin is split into four sections, two for each part of the basin, north and south. South is where you'll probably end up first. You can find the docks to access this area by tracking along the northern glacial wall and continuing west until you come to the eye jellyfish. Check the radio tower next to the docks, there is a music disk there. The upper southern area is where Phi Robotics lays, as well as frost vase plants and spicy peppers. Both of those are excellent crops to grow, as they net you useful things. The spicy peppers scattered throughout the entirety of glacial basin essentially means that you'll not starve while out here so long as you're paying attention to what you're doing. Note that snow stalkers REALLY HATE FLARES. They'll make your trips out here annoying, even in the prawn, which is the best way to ensure the weather isn't a factor for you. Sometimes they're in the caves. Flares will make exploring these much safer.
You can get to lower glacial basin through the upper part, but it's a bit confusing and I prefer to access it via the glacial tunnel. Head south along the western glacial wall from the glacial basin docks and you'll find a tunnel which eye jellyfish are hanging out near. This tunnel leads directly to lower glacial basin and provides a convenient way to access the area without needing to travel through upper GB every time.
Northern Glacial Basin can be accessed by scanning the hydraulic fluid on the bridge, then repairing the bridge to cross it. DO NOT GO HERE WITHOUT THE PRAWN. SERIOUSLY. The grip arm is very handy to have out here and if you haven't found it, use a scanner room in Lilypads to find the sea monkey nests but it's not necessary so don't stress if you don't have it. Just don't use the snow fox. It's useless and handles like crap.
The iceworms here are dangerous if you stay still too long. Take your time, explore thoroughly and mark out any Alterra sites you find with beacons. A couple of these have the blueprints for the Thumper and this is your ticket to working in this area safely. A thumper will keep the iceworms away within a radius, ensuring you don't get whacked while picking stuff up outside the prawn.
Along the western wall of this zone is a small cave with three large ion cube deposits. Keep a sharp eye out for it, you definitely want those. At the north-east tip of the zone you'll find ice worm corpses you can scan that don't put you in mortal danger during the attempt.
Really funny seeing them pop up and chow down on snow stalkers, though. Pay back sucks, don't it? Al-An's body part is out here. Keep an eye out for the precursor cables and make sure to check all the caves, because the master gateway leading to Phi Robotics is here as well. The room containing the gateway leads to a small docks and tunnel with an ice wall you can cut through to easily access the middle of northern glacial basin from the docks. There is a music disk at those docks as well.

Going Down?

By now you're probably wondering where to go. Remember purple vents? The engine part of the mercury II has a crevasse leading down to where you need to go next. Once you've found the crystal caves, you better hope you picked up the defense module at Marg's base. It's sitting inside her room and sometimes gets knocked to the floor when Preston jumps you. You'll be wanting it for what's down here.
The Shadow Leviathan.
Ohhhh boy are they ever aggressive. Good news for you though, they patrol around on a set route and they don't go through the whole of crystal caves. You'll be looking for fragments here, as well as materials. Lots of gold, silver and kyanite in the crevasses in the floor of these caves. An Al-An body part, the final one, can be found at the bottom of a tunnel which is mouthed by a circular formation of crystals. Once you have it, you'll want to go even deeper to find the fabrication facility, forcing you to wander crystal caves until you find the blood crystal caves.

Oh Yeah, It's All Comin' Together

So, you now have everything you need to build your home boy a body. Once that's done, you'll be wanting to wrap up the bit with Sam. If you've explored lower southern glacial basin, you'll have found the cave with the frozen leviathan. Oh, and grab the music disk in the security bunker. Exploring this cave gets you some useful stuff. You know the little caves here with the blinking markers? Explore these with spy penglings! There's some useful stuff in some of them, actually. Including the antidote Sam hid. You can use that on the loader located on the upper part of the leviathan in the cave.
And... that's that! That's the whole game.

Tips and Tricks

Good luck, Robin!
