Formula 1's Urbanism and Effects on Car Dependency

2023.03.25 08:40 Tic-Tac-Alternate Formula 1's Urbanism and Effects on Car Dependency

When I come here for my occasional perusing of urban-planning discussion, I sometimes see posts from people curious about this sub's opinions on motor racing (F1 in particular). While there aren't that many of these posts, I felt like there was enough discussion within those posts to elaborate on it. After all, given the global nature of F1 and the economics that go into it, I feel like it's a good way to discuss a country's attitude towards car dependency, what certain places get right or wrong when planning for large events like an F1 GP, and how F1's business practices can perpetuate car dependency/car-centric culture. As someone who's enjoyed using transit for as long as I can remember and as an F1 fan (hypocritical, I know), I figured this would be an interesting discussion.

  1. Car-centric (or transit/bike-centric) planning within a race: Here I want to talk about the transportation situation behind F1 races. Since people often compare American sporting venues to European ones here, let's talk about the same for an F1 race:
    1. Good examples of transit-planning in F1 (I can think of 3 examples off the top of my head):
      1. Dutch GP (Zandvoort, NL): The most popular example of how an F1 race can be transit and bike-accessible is the Dutch city of Zandvoort. Predictably, cycling is a well-utilized mode of transport for this race, with reservable bike parking. Out of the 70k attendees in 2021, 25k biked, and 27k used the train to Zandvoort aan Zee station to get there. Zandvoort also implemented traffic-limiting measures to not flood the small city with cars. F1 organizers seem rather proud of this, stating in the race intro cinematic that only 2% of attendees showed up in a car. Although this stat is probably exaggerated to some extent, it does show that even car races can be biked to and be served well by transit.
      2. Japanese GP (Suzuka, Mie, JP): Another example of a transit-accessible F1 race is the Japanese GP in Suzuka, a fan-favorite event. IMO this is an example of how transit can be implemented for massive annual events like this one. Both Ise Railway (The local rail provider) and Mie Transport provide direct service to the circuit's train station and bus services respectively on race weekends. Although I couldn't find any statistics, footage of rail service during race weekends, and this 18-minute video of just busses heading out to go to the circuit show that local agencies in the area take transit seriously during this.
      3. Canadian GP (Montreal, Quebec, CA): Ironically, one of the better examples of transit-accessible F1 venues is in car-centric North America. The circuit (Circuit Gilles Villeneuve) is within the confines of the Parc Jean-Drapeau, served by STM's yellow metro line (btw, why is the yellow line so short?). Since there is zero spectator parking at the venue, the most effective option to get there is via. the metro station. F1 themselves even discourage driving to the circuit, instead directing visitors to use the metro. I attended this race back in June and I can attest to the number of people simultaneously going to the metro station. It definitely was a moshpit but still beats sitting in traffic for 2 weeks. I've heard some complaints from locals here that the event tends to attract people with loud vehicles to the city center. Although I do believe that F1 being in the city contributes to this, I feel like this can be solved through the city rethinking its attitude towards cars rather than rejecting F1 as a whole. Looking at the event in a vacuum though, the Canadian GP is a pleasant departure from the norm in North America. (P.S. Montreal's metro was fantastic from my experience. Good service, (relatively) clean stations, and attractive rolling stock all contributed to a pleasant experience. Would love to have something like it where I live.)
    2. Bad examples of transit-planning in F1 (For every good example, there are of course the bad examples):
      1. United States GP (Austin, Texas, US): It's in Texas, should be self-explanatory at this stage. There is a shuttle from downtown, but given that this is Texas, I suppose there is a reason why most people opt to drive. The abundance of surface parking will probably make most people here write home to their families in terror. Some portions of the broadcast are highly distracting due to 60% of the frame containing parking lots rather than racing. This place, combined with Gigafactory Austin being nearby, makes this area a cathedral for anti-human design that perfectly shows the problems that the US has with stuff like this.
      2. British GP (Silverstone, UK): A somewhat tamer version of what can be seen in Austin, but still far from ideal, as a significant portion of the attendees, shows up by car. Although shuttles are available from Milton Keynes, it's still a 22-minute drive from the station to the circuit. The local campgrounds built to house visitors don't exactly help the local traffic given that most of them are car-centric. Other races, including The Hungarian GP (Budapest, HU), have similar campgrounds that have the same issues of car-centrism, and events like the Spanish GP in Barcelona have transit issues that reflect that even in Europe, there is work that can be done to reduce car-usage during large events.
    3. Miscellaneous examples: Miami and Las Vegas are 2 recent US additions to the F1 calendar that can tell us a lot about the US's car-dependent nature. While Miami isn't terribly car-centric as an event, the fact that the track was built on what was the parking lot of the Hard Rock Stadium shows how much space stadiums in the US allocate to cars. While little is known about the Las Vegas race as of now (set to take place in November 2023), the fact that they're going to be racing down the strip shows how unnecessarily wide the roads down the LV strip are.
  2. Ways F1 perpetuates car dependency and car culture: Although I adore F1, I have to admit that it has done an extremely poor job in terms of sustainability, and it certainly does not help with the prevalence of car culture within society. Here are some things that I think contribute to this:
    1. Glorification of fossil fuels:
      1. Almost every F1 team has a petroleum partner (i.e. Mercedes & Petronas, Red bull & Mobil1, Ferrari & Shell, Alpine & Castrol/BP, Aston Martin & Aramco, Williams & Gulf). Beyond that, F1's dependence on Arabian oil money (particularly with their strategic partnership with Aramco and the subsequent introduction of the Saudi Arabian GP) has been hugely contentious lately, and are testament to the sport's dependency on fossil fuel advertising. It's logical, but advertising petroleum isn't exactly going to do wonders for reducing car dependency and the consequences of climate change. Much like with tobacco advertising in F1 though, I feel like the complete eradication of oil advertising can help mitigate this issue, but unfortunately, I feel like so long as middle-east money is a part of F1, it will only do more harm than good.
      2. Back in 2013, Greenpeace organized a protest at the Belgium race, mainly advocating against Shell's involvement in F1. So people are very much aware of the impact that F1 has on the fossil fuel market. Some have also used F1 races as a platform to advocate against fossil fuel investments, including Just Stop Oil's track invasion during the 2022 British GP.
      3. While we're on the topic of Arab Oil Cash, it's also important to note the human rights abuses some middle eastern countries have committed. Much like the world cup, I feel like the recent additions of ME races (i.e. Qatar), serve as distractions from the realities of these countries. Again, this is something that fans and even some drivers acknowledge and condemn, I'm afraid it'll be a part of the sport unless the very concept of bribery and corruption ceases to exist.
    2. Glorification of cars:
      1. Out of the 10 F1 teams, 5 are directly owned by an automaker, with 8 having significant ties with one. While I don't think this has as much of an impact as fossil fuel advertising, I know many (especially here) are upset about the glorification of cars in advertising.
I feel like I've written a lot at this point, and I've definitely exhausted my talking points. If you made it this far, thanks for reading. Feel free to leave any thoughts in the comments :)

2023.03.25 06:31 mcdoolz A Song of Ice and Liars

Hey all.
Around Christmas I wrote and ran an adventure and the players died terribly during it. Tragic. I loved the storyline and the play leading up to their dramatic death at the turning point with the BBEG so much that I decided others might want to TPK their players in a cold hearted, snowy murder mystery turns mystical fight for the future.
There's a GMBinder document available here: https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-NKV-gQpIWkys9U_FtrF
Let's dive in shall we?

Warm hearts in a Cold winter

About the Adventure

This adventure places a party of level 5 characters at the center of a quarrel between two composers. It is located in Suzail but could as easily be placed in any major city.
Naturally, it should take place during a winter season or in a cold climate.

Precursor

A vengeful sylvan spirit, having possessed a young mage some weeks ago, has murdered and taken the place of a reputable maestro.
His goal is to play a piece of music at the upcoming charity gala where the nobles of the city will be in attendance, subsequently raising his army of snow borne abominations and launching his conquest upon the warm world.

Summary of Events

The city of Suzail is in celebration as the Noble Heart Winter Charity Gala is being built up with structures, merchants and performers stretching upon the promenade from the Royal Court Theatre in either direction for some distance.
The story begins with the players getting in touch with the director of the Royal Court Theater, Antonio Fellini and his assistant Nicolette Fiorelle.
In speaking to the director and his assistant, the players learn that a maestro named Giovanni has stolen the sheet music to be played at the gala by another maestro, Lucian.
Antonio suggests they check his residence and Nicolette takes the players there. Giovanni is not home. Nicolette suggests he may be at The Golden Dice, a gambling hall on the dockside.
Searching Giovannis residence, the players find a collection of cash-out receipts for The Golden Dice gambling hall and a collection of notes and drawings with a strange square signature in the corner of each. Anyone with the artisan background recognizes the signature of Hari Noshi, a tattooist on the dockside.
If the players go to The Golden Dice first, Giovanni is not there and soon after arrives a gang of thugs sent by Lucian who are also looking for Giovanni. After the thugs are dealt with, the owner of The Golden Dice informs the players that Giovanni is likely at his friend Hari Noshi's tattoo parlor down the way.
When the players arrive at the tattoo parlor, they find a robed ogre shaking down a grappled Giovanni. Archers watch close by and a scout sits hidden keeping watch on the alleyway.
If the gang from the gambling hall is still alive, they arrive to assist in any conflict. If the players manage to save Giovanni from the gang, he offers to give the players the sheet music back; he left it with a scribe named Peregrin to have a copy made, and proceeds to take them there.
When they arrive at the scribery they find the door locked but the scribe is visible through a window, hunched over his lectern. However they enter, the players and Giovanni find a dead scribe, his lips blue, a frozen quill in his grasp, frost formed on his fingers and a peaceful look on his face. Giovanni is in shock, and sees that Peregrin had copied across but a single bar of the music. Peregrin is an alchemist as well and maintains a small supply of potions for healing, cold resistance and poisons antidotes.
Giovanni lets the players have the sheet music, deciding that this has all cost him far more than he bargained. The players can decide what to do.
If they return the sheet music to Antonio, they meet Lucian, a lithe pale well dressed figure with white gray peppered hair. When he speaks, it's in a slow passionate tone. He is thankful for their work and offers a reward for the music before adjourning to rehearse. Antonio pays the players and they're free to do as they will until the gala begins.
If the players choose to investigate Lucian in any fashion, events can twist a bit. Ultimately the players should see the gala begin (unless they solve the puzzle before then) and eventually lead to Lucian's performance. As the music crescendos, Lucian's body is suddenly wracked by seizures leading to the release of a slyvan spirit and the sudden spawning of several abominable snow soldiers.
The players must defeat the sylvan creature amidst the army of Purple Dragons, the newly spawned army of snow beings, and the chaos of the galas patrons and the citizens running for their lives.

Adventure Hooks

The director of the Royal Court Theater needs help he can trust to get the sheet music back and not get Giovanni arrested. How the players meet with Antonio and Nicolette should relate to professions and backgrounds where applicable. Some of the following suggestions may work for you.

Royal Court Theater

The Royal Court Theater in Suzail is a grand theater located in the capital city of Cormyr. It is known for its opulent interiors, which include a gilded ceiling and ornate chandeliers. The theater is home to a variety of performances, including plays, operas, and concerts. It is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, and is often considered one of the cultural gems of Cormyr. The theater is well-known for its excellent acoustics and has hosted some of the most famous performers in the realm. It is also a frequent venue for events hosted by the royal family of Cormyr.

Meeting Antonio & Nicolette

These two are a bit frantic and unsure of what to do. Antonio is stricken yet calm while Nicolette is beside herself, blaming herself for her irresponsibility.
When they greet they players, they are polite and willing to discuss what they know if it seems the players are to be helpful.
If they ask about Lucian, they state that he left on business of his own soon after he heard of the theft.

The Theft

Antonio & Nicolette explain that the maestro Giovanni had visited to discuss the upcoming gala and what he was expected to perform.
In discovering that another maestro named Lucian was to play, he became angered and although they had assumed he had left, they soon discovered he had stolen the sheet music that was to be played.
Giovanni left a note that stated Lucian did not deserve to play the music as Lucian was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and a silver bell to call his wet nurse.
Antonio suggests checking Giovanni's home and Nicolette agrees to take the players there. The residence is only a few blocks away down the promenade.

Finding Giovanni

The players arrive at a two story brick building with a few opulent apartments, each featuring a tall archway patio window with a wrought iron railing encircling a stone patio balcony.
Giovannis apartment is one of the upper floor units although he is not home when the players arrive. The players can force entry on the door, gain access via the unlocked balcony door, or seek the landlord who lives in one of the lower units.
The landlord could be convinced to provide the key with a successful Charisma (Persuasion or Deception) check (DC 14) and a plausible story: locked out lover, family member, or parent depending on the individual. A successful Intimidation check will cause the old landlord to die of heart failure.

Nobody's home

Giovannis apartment is disheveled, with old laundry, stacked dishes, piles of parchment with ink scrawled across them and a large four post bed in disarray.
When the players search the apartment they find a collection of receipts for winnings from the Golden Dice, a dock side gambling hall.
If they roll 15 or better, they find drawings with the signature of Hari Noshi. Nicolette explains that is Giovannis tattooist.
If the players do not successfully search the apartment, Nicolette will offer that he gambles and may be at the hall.

The Golden Dice

The Golden Dice is a well decorated and well protected establishment on the dock side. It is the gambling hall known by the wealthy to be seedy but safe to patronize. Care of Dargen Goldhand, the Golden Dice has guards and free ale for house regulars such as Giovanni and any character with the Gambler background.
Giovanni is not here, and the patrons are all too engrossed in their doings to care for the players questions. Asking too many times over may bring the ire of the house guard or the patrons.
If the players seek out the management to ask about Giovanni, they're politely informed that he covered his debts some time ago and that he's not been seen for weeks.
During this time three mercenaries will arrive also seeking Giovanni. Markus, Grimgore and Vaxin consider themselves professionals and don't directly threaten the players, although they make no secret of their objective and tell the players to stay out of their way or suffer consequences. They don't attack unless attacked directly, and will otherwise rush towards Hana To soon afterward.
If the players dispatch the thugs without hearing about Hana To and let the thugs escape, Dargen offers that Giovanni could be at the tattoo shop.

Hana To

When the players reach Hana To, they find the rest of the crew that is after Giovanni as well as Giovanni and his tatooist Hari Noshi.
The tattoo shop is a mess, Hari Noshi is visibly injured, and an ogre by the name of Ogrimm has Giovanni in his grasp.

Ogrimm & Company

If the players attempt to negotiate with Ogrimm he tells the players to mind their own business or be shot. If the players press attempts to negotiate he gives the word for his archers to loose upon the two closest players.
If they still do not engage but continue to try to negotiate, Ogrimm laughs at them and continues to rough up Giovanni.
If attacked, Ogrimm doesn't want to fight to the death and will offer quarter if one or more of his crew are killed.
If the players refuse quarter, he will attempt a tactical retreat, providing covering fire using magic missiles from his wand or while he can cast them and resorting to fire bolts if necessary. If possible, he will grapple and carry Giovanni.
If Ogrimm manages to knock out or kill any of the players, he offers quarter. If the players take it, Ogrimms tells them that they can wait until he is done with Giovanni and then go about their business.
If Ogrimm is afforded the time, he will roughly interrogate Giovanni about the location of the sheet music before finding a receipt for a scribe named Peregrin on Giovanni.
Ogrimm at this point will throw Giovanni aside and leave the scene to go retrieve the sheet music from the scribe.
At this point Giovanni is badly injured from the interrogation but tells the players to get to Peregrin before Ogrimm does.
If the players have dispatched or routed Ogrimm and his crew, or taken Giovanni from Hana To and escaped, Giovanni is thankful and tells them that he is regretful for what he's done and what it's cost his friend. He takes the players to the scribe.

Peregrin's Dead

Peregrins home is a small two story brick book store with a placard that reads his name in gold serif font.
Upon arriving at the scribes residence the players will find the scribe visibly hunched over his lectern, presumably sleeping.
His door is locked however and banging on the door doesn't raise him. Observant (Passive Perception 13 or better) players will note there is a bit of frost on the windows, inside the building.
The players can get in through:
However the players gain entry, they are confronted with a very dead Peregrin. His lips are blue his finger tips are frozen and his whole body is cold as ice.
Giovanni will be visibly saddened by this and will observe that Peregrin was working on the copy but only managed a few bars in before he died.
At this stage, Giovanni asks the players to see that the music is returned to Antonio, and states that this debacle has now truly cost him far more than he bargained.

Moonlighting

Peregrin kept a lab where he practiced alchemy on the second story of his shop.
Searching his lab will reveal 1d4 + 2 Potions of Healing, 1d4 Potions of Cold Resistance and 1d4 Potions of (Hill) Giant Strength.
In his living area he kept a modest wardrobe, a small savings of 300 gold pieces and receipts for shipments of alchemical goods and book binding equipment arriving.

Enroute

If Ogrimm and his crew are still alive, the players may have to deal with him in some fashion or get to Peregrins faster than them (eg: by horseback). It's up to the DM how long it takes Ogrimm and the crew to reach Peregrin. He is resourceful but he does not have transportation at the ready.

Meeting Lucian

Presuming that the players return to the Royal Court Theater with the sheet music, they will find Antonio, Nicolette and Lucian meeting in the main foyer.
Antonio is relieved to see the players arriving and asks for Giovannis condition. If Giovanni is dead or incapacitated, Antonio is greatly grieved by this and will lash out at Lucian for sending thugs. If Giovanni is alive, the director and Nicolette both breathe a sigh of relief and thank the players for their involvement, avoiding any mention of the thugs.
If the players provide any mention of the thugs, Lucian readily states that he hired and sent them to retrieve his property as was his prerogative. He apologizes coldly for any inconvenience upon the players and offers to pay them what he was to pay Ogrimm's crew.
If the players hand over the sheet music, Lucian thanks them and retreats from the meeting, stating that he must rehearse.
If the players ask about the sheet music before handing it over, Lucian is dismissive of their questions, stating he has no time for their petty, paltry prattlings and that he must get to rehearsals.
Antonio will parrot these statements in a more polite tone while Nicolette will stay quiet and stoic.
If the players accuse, or degrade Lucian in some way, the director, Nicolette and Lucian will all be visibly shocked while Antonio will demand that they hand over the sheet music, take their payment and leave. If pressed, he will threaten to summon the Purple Dragons justice upon the player.
If the players take payment and leave they receive a sum of 100 platinum pieces to be divided amongst them.
If they part on good terms the players are told they can expect special seating for the affairs to come.
At this point, the players are free to wander the promenade and take in the sights of the gala that is now coming under way.

The Noble Heart Winter Charity Gala

The Noble Heart Winter Charity Gala is an annual event held in the city of Suzail, Cormyr. It is a grand affair, attended by members of the royal court and the wealthy elite, as well as various nobles, politicians, and other influential figures. The gala is held in the Royal Court Theater, a magnificent venue known for its opulent decor and state-of-the-art stage and performance facilities.
The gala is held to raise funds for charitable cause, with a focus on helping those in need during the cold winter months. Organized by the Royal Court Theater and the Noble Heart Foundation the charity manages to raise a significant amount of coin each year by pitting the various noble houses against one another in a blind competition of wealth and giving.
At its core, the gala is a mix of high brow showmanship and grass roots fund raising. The various churches are well aware of the ego surrounding the noble houses and how to tread about those egos to maximize the return towards their efforts.
Those who organize the events are masters of negotiation and the effort and cunning they put into enticing the noble houses into providing as they do can not be understated.
In dealing with problems such as general toxicity, outbursts of tempers or outright violence that may surround the event, those who can will attempt to persuade and dissuade the aggressors to understand the core spirit of the event, agreeing and soothing the frustration that some may express.

The Director, Klaus Von Santos

Called a 'man of the people' by his peers, Klaus works tirelessly with a large and wide spread team of passionate people to make the gala a success each year. He can be found in any number of areas around the gala grounds. He is an aging elf of 600 years who emigrated to Cormyr some 60 years past. He has made Suzail his home and is an accomplished musician as well as event coordinator. He is a devout member of the Church of Tyr, swearing that he had his life saved once by the deity. He enjoys reading the daily news and gossip rags to 'keep up with the times' and is an accomplished Mage.

Event Organizers

The passionate people who make the gala possible run the gamut of individuals from laborers and architects to performers, organizers, and on and on. The gala and the construction thereby can be described as an organized chaos consuming the promenade surrounding the theater.

Honored Guests of the Gala

If you are placing this adventure in Suzail, in Cormyr, in the Forgotten Realms canon, then this list of noble houses should suffice as the high level roster of attendees.

Who's who

From the Obarskyrs who rule Cormyr to the Maelstroms from distant Waterdeep, every noble family worth their clout in coin can be seen at the affair. They tour about in carts, dressed to impress and to stay warm, in that order. Here are a few of the families that would attend:

House Obarskyr

The Obarskyr family has ruled Cormyr for centuries, and is the most powerful and influential noble house in the nation. The current ruling monarch of Cormyr, King Azoun V, is a member of this family.

House Barrowmaze

The Barrowmaze family is a powerful noble house in Suzail that is known for its wealth and influence. The family is involved in various businesses and industries, and is known for its charitable works and philanthropy.

House Dauntinghorn

The Dauntinghorn family is another powerful and influential noble house in Suzail. The family is known for its military prowess and its connections to the Purple Dragons, Cormyr's elite military corps.

House Bryne

The Bryne family is a wealthy and influential noble house in Suzail that is involved in various businesses and industries. The family is known for its support of the arts and its philanthropy.

House Maelstrom

The Maelstrom family is a powerful and influential noble house in the city of Waterdeep, one of the largest and most influential cities in the Forgotten Realms.

House Illance

The Illance family is a powerful noble house in the city of Baldur's Gate, another major city in the Forgotten Realms.

Sights & Sounds

There is quite a lot to see and do at the charity gala.

Decorations & Decorum

The entire promenade explodes in color and dress as tapestries, arrangements, lights and statuary are hung from buildings, or placed in the street.

Ice sculptures

The Noble Heart Winter Charity Gala features a stunning display of ice sculptures, showcasing the talents of the city's finest ice sculptors. These intricate works of art range from detailed, realistic pieces to whimsical, playful figures inspired by the winter season.

Ice skating

Guests can enjoy a bit of ice skating along the Promenades specially-made rink.

Sports

Professional athletes and local enthusiasts alike showcase their skills in a variety of winter sports, including ice climbing, ice skating, and skiing.

Fashion show

The Noble Heart Winter Charity Gala also includes a winter fashion show, featuring the latest in winter clothing and accessories.

Hot chocolate bar

From Waterdeep with love, Delphine comes to serve a variety of flavors and toppings for heated milk mixed with chocolate.

Craft brews & Fine wines

Hot mead, the finest spirits and the frothiest ales are served and on tap throughout the gala grounds as artisans local and not come to show their generosity.

Food

Culinary expertise is awash in the streets as various vendors come out to feed to destitute and any others who want a bite to eat.

Silent auction

Guests can bid on a variety of items and favors from the church and is the largest source of income for the gala.

Donations

While the focus of the Noble Heart Gala is the wealthy and the wealth they provide, there is no shortage of provisions provided by the general population.
If players wish to donate they may although to purchase anything locally is virtually impossible as everything that can be purchased to donate already has been by all the noble houses.

Events

The following events assume that Suzail is your venue of choice and provide a few celebrities from other D&D canon that dungeon masters may or may not want to include.
d10 Loot
1-2 Protestors
3-4 Drunk Noble
5-6 Fire!
7-8 Chef who?
9-10 Thief!

Protestors

A group of protestors from the various churches gather outside the gala. They are angry at the flambouyence and excess demonstrated by the gala shouting slogans and carrying signs such as:
They are peaceful but loud and disruptive.
A successful Charisma (Persuasion) check (DC 15) could convince them to take their grievances where it can be properly heard (a magister or event organizer), or a Charisma (Intimidation) check (DC 15) could scare them off.
Alternatively, a Charisma (Deception) check (DC 15) could convince them that their counter parts are else where and that they should seek them out.
If the players do not intervene, the authorities eventually show up and arrest the protesters to much maligned shouting and cursing from the protesters and any nearby gala attendees.
If the players successfully intervene, the protesters leave and the players are thanked cordially by the Purple Dragons.

Drunk Noble

A wealthy, intoxicated patron becomes aggressive towards some of the needy, calling them "riff raff" and "street rats".
A successful Charisma (Persuasion) check (DC 15) could convince them to calm down and behave, or a Charisma (Intimidation) check (DC 15) could intimidate them into behaving.
If the players do not intervene, the patron is eventually hit with a snow ball and falls over unconscious in the snow while the thrower is chased off by the authorities.
If the players successfully intervene the noble withdraws and the players are thanked cordially by the vendor.

Fire!

A fire breaks out in a greasy food stall, quickly engulfing the whole of the stall in a horrible blaze. Throwing snow upon the greasy fire causes it to spit and burst wildly. Throwing mud upon the fire wil slowly douse it away.
If the players do not intervene, the stall burns to the ground.
If the players successfully intervene, they are lauded loudly and the establishment owner offers them lodging at a local inn and meals anytime they wish.

Chef who?

A self proclaimed gourmand by the name of Gurney has lost their pass and is trying to enter the gala. He claims he's from Phandalin, come a long way to provide his services, and is visibly frustrated.
A successful Charisma (Persuasion) check (DC 15) could convince the gate guards to let them in, or a successful Intelligence (Investigation) or Wisdom (Perception) check (DC 15) can find their pass wedged in the floor boards of the drivers seating on their wagon.
If the players do not intervene, the chef is told he can purchase a vendors pass with the organizers to which he shrieks that he already has before turning around and leaving.
If the players successfully intervene, the chef thanks them cordially and tells them to visit him once he is set up. If they do, he gifts them with a Bowl of Endless Soup.
Bowl of Endless Soup
Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)
This simple clay bowl appears to be unremarkable white clay, but upon closer inspection, it is adorned with a border of engraved sigils translating to 'soup' in various languages.
When an attuned user speaks the word 'soup' in their language, the bowl will produce a never-ending supply of steaming hot soup.
The soup constantly replenishes itself and never seems to grow cold or spoiled.
While attuned to the bowl, you gain the following benefits:
You are immune to the effects of extreme cold and starvation.
As an action, you can command the bowl to fill with soup of any flavor you desire. It does not produce stew.
Soup produced this way will satisfy any hunger and restore 1d6 + 4 hit points to any creature who consumes it while the soup is fresh from the bowl. Soup transferred to another vessel loses its effect after fifteen minutes and tastes as bland as water.
The effects of the soup last until the creature takes a short or long rest.
The bowl will remain filled with soup until commanded to empty, at which point it will become empty until commanded to fill again.

Thief!

A pickpocket is operating in the crowds at the gala.
A successful Perception check (DC 15) could notice them in the act, or a successful Charisma (Deception) check (DC 15) could pretend to be a wealthy patron and attract them. A successful Charisma (Persuasion or Intimidation) check (DC 13) can get them to leave under threat of the authorities.
If the players do not intervene, they may find themselves victims of the pickpocket. The pickpocket is sighted some time later and arrested soon after by the Purple Dragons.

Bad blood

If Ogrimm and his crew are still alive and were not routed, they will seek out revenge against the players for costing them the job with Lucian.
The crew will organize an ambush at the gala using whomever is still alive.
Ogrimm will look for an opportunity to take care of business off the beaten path and if no good opportunity presents itself he will patiently await his chance.

Investigating Lucian

If the players grow suspicious of Lucian and look into his behavior they will notice a few strange details.

Obelisks & Orihalcum

If the players look for Lucian in the gala, they can find him doing a tour of the promenade. If they follow him they will find him approaching each of the obelisks mentioned above. At each one, he places a small piece of Orihalcum upon the sigil.
If he is approached about this, he states that he is supporting the cause and doing his part for the celebrations.
If the players vandalize an obelisk the Purple Dragons will be summoned and the vandals arrested or driven off.

Loosely dressed

If a player character has a passive Perception score of 15 or higher, they will notice that Lucian is dressed in a simple open collar shirt, silk breeches and high boots; far under dressed for the cold weather.

Cold atmosphere

If a player character has a passive Perception score of 15 or higher and stands within 5 feet of Lucian, they will notice the air is noticeably colder near him.

Frosty breath

If a player character has a passive Perception score of 15 or higher they will notice that when Lucian speaks indoors, his voice steams or that when he speaks outdoors, it does not.
\pagebreak

Crescendo

The central point of the gala is the unveiling of the honors that the noble houses will appreciate for their gifts to the those in need.

Laments of the Frost

The time comes eventually for Lucian to perform his music for the eager nobility.
As Lucian's music fills the air, the temperature begins to drop rapidly.
A burst of icy wind erupts from one of the frost obelisks scattered throughout the gala. A fog quickly rolls through and a howl is heard as a pack of snow wolves materialize out of thin air as beyond them can be heard the tromp of footsteps, the screams of people and the sound of a war horn
The obelisks pulse with cold energy and a blue shaft of sparkling light pulses into the sky from each of the obelisks.
The players must work quickly to destroy the obelisks if they hope to stop the spawning of the sylphs minions and weaken the spirit and ultimately defeat it.

Winter Frost & Company

When the sylvan spirit bursts from his vessel he arrives with a searing cold vengeance and a near army of cohorts. As the gala erupts into a catastrophic war of winter kind hunting the population, the Purple Dragons can be relied upon to leap into action as do the many private companies protecting their noble patrons.

2023.03.25 04:46 Nyxx35 Welcome Home: The Puppet Show Theory

Ok, if anyone does not know about about Welcome Home, it's a ARG/ project made by Clownillustrations.
https://www.clownillustration.com/welcomehomeyou
For those of you who DO know what Welcome Home is, I will try to make the most coherent theory that I can.
Let's get to the point, Wally Darling is NOT the only "villain" of the story, his house is. Let me explain.
Wally Darling is the most prominent of the fictional show "Welcome Home", he's like if Bob Ross mixed with Mr. Rogers mixed with Elmo. However, he also seems to be aware that he's in a show. How do we know this?
https://www.clownillustration.com/eovwxy
https://www.clownillustration.com/voywex
These two links do point out that Wally is somewhat aware, it's especially telling in the second link. However, if he knows that he's in a fictional world, how come he tells us to "stay quiet?"
It's because of Home, Wally's house. But saying that a house is the root of all evil is kinda silly and far-fetched, even IF Home's design is kinda malicious to say the least.
https://www.clownillustration.com/so-below
Yeah, I don't think I need to explain this one. Having a malicious eye stare at you from a window that's smeared with what I assume to be blood is not exactly... friendly. But what exactly is Wally doing? Two things I think he's doing: Worshipping the house or begging it.
Why worshipping? Well, honestly if you look a bit deeper into all of the links and into all of the files, I think that Home MIGHT be a metaphor for the Devil. Yep, BIBLICAL SHIT IS HAPPENING.
In the link above, it's named the "so-below", and place is usually depicted as below the surface and associated with the Devil?
Hell.
Not only that but in this link here: https://www.clownillustration.com/from-me-to-you, if you look on the seventh slide you could see that Wally is doing Baphomet's infamous pose, with 2 fingers raised high and 2 fingers pointed down. I looked a little bit deeper on what the pose really means and according to https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33682878, the two finger salute means "Two fingers on the right hand point up and two on the left hand point down, meaning "as above, so below"."
SO BELOW?? WELL ISN'T THAT A COINCIDENCE.
"But Nyxx!" I hear you say. "All this proves is that Wally might be a cult leader! This doesn't really prove that poor Home is the one turning all of the poor people into muppets!" But ah, dear reader, I still have more links to serve!
https://www.clownillustration.com/singingmp4
If you listen to this, I assume it's Wally singing the song to house. At the end of the song, Wally says this "I don't know any other words, that's all Barnaby ever taught me. Do you like it?" Followed by 3 thumps. Then again followed by "That's good... I think." But how do we know exactly that this is Home?
https://www.clownillustration.com/wally
In this link, it states. "Home is regarded as the ninth neighbor, but seemingly cannot speak as illustrations show Home speaking only in onomatopoeias.(Creak, Squeak, Bang.)" 3 thumps as an answer kind of fits Home's onomatopoeia kinda schtick.
It seems that Wally is trying to calm Home down, perhaps even trying to be friendly towards it, see if there's a way to make a compromise. We don't REALLY know Home's full capabilities, its a terrifying thing to have uncanny valley type building that probably has horrific powers! And you have to live inside them! It's like Skinamarink all over again!
https://www.clownillustration.com/so-below
It's kinda why Wally might be begging Home here. To release them from this puppet world? What is Home's true goal in bringing everyone in? Is Home even capable of doing so?
Well, if you go in the mobile version of https://www.clownillustration.com/your-neighborhood, you could see that instead of Wally's house being-- well-- there, it's just an inky black void with a swirling center. That center is actually what I believe to be a portal, in which Home uses to bring in more neighbors. So not only is Home capable of teleportation, but I also think that it might be even capable of possession.
Admittedly, this one might be a bit of a stretch. If you go back to this link right here again https://www.clownillustration.com/from-me-to-you, and you go to the first slide, you see Wally looking oh so insane with Barnaby towering behind him. The text reads "Look." Wally exclaimed "I made a dog." It's more plausible for a portal-making sentient house with unknown powers to turn people into puppets than Wally, but why is Wally saying "I" if he didn't turn Barnaby into a dog?
Simple: Home is puppeteering Wally.
Notice how when the text reads "Look. I made a dog." It's incredibly wonky. While this could be a stylistic choice, this could also be a form who has trouble speaking in its new host. Remember, Home usually talks through onomatopoeias, not words! Not only that but in this link, https://www.clownillustration.com/yxwvoe, it uses the same speech pattern, this could be Home talking to the viewer but again this could be a stretch.
Why Wally specifically? Well, not only is Wally the closest thing that Home can possess (he literally lives in it) but Wally is also naive and wants to befriend Home. This kindness could've been Wally's downfall as when the moment was right, Home possessed Wally. Perhaps that's why Home turned everyone into puppets specifically, makes it more ironic when it controls them.
In conclusion, Home might be the Devil (or not!) with portal-powers and Wally's being possessed by his own house! A bit of a long theory (and I congratulate those who finish reading this), but I did leave out a few questions unanswered.
What exactly is Home's end goal? What is Wally's end goal? Wally knows he's in a fictional world and can contact the viewer and yet what's his plan? Does he even want to leave?? Please, leave your own theories in the comments!

2023.03.25 04:36 TherrenGirana In Defense of the Manhwa: SUPER LONG BTW.

Usually just a lurker but I've been seeing a lot of complaints about the manhwa being shallow or 'too light' compared to the dark gritty light novel. This opinion was held by a portion of the fanbase 1-2 years ago when this sub was more active as well, recent complaints are coming from a certain user whose username rhymes with 'basleep bassion 3829.'
I would like to preface this is NOT a targeted attack on anyone's preferences, especially not Basleep Bassion's. Nor am I criticizing anyone's direct character or intelligence for holding those preferences. This is a genuine response that simply aims to convey why I disagree with said preferences. Basleep Bassion or anyone who agrees with them is free to respond and support their stance in kind, just make sure to keep the civility obviously.
Also this will be VERY LONG. Don't read if you're more of a casual reader and don't care that much for the difference. or do, I've got nothing against that. I have a lot of love for the manhwa, and I took quite a bit of time to make my argument as objective as possible, to legitimize and express how passionate I am, how admiring I am at the risks that the creators of the manhwa took. If you don't want to read this much but still want to know my conclusion:
TLDR: I think the manhwa is vastly superior in writing to the light novel, made many significant improvements overall, and does not deserve to be considered a faulty adaptation or anything of the like. It is a splendid rendering of the original story in a more visually appealing and more importantly, a more dramatically interesting version.
If anyone is super curious about how much of either I've read, I am caught up with the manhwa translation by leviatanscans, and read to about chapter 160ish about 2-3 years ago (I checked today on novelupdates it seems the site for the novel is dead sadge). When I dropped the novel the events were actually pretty close in chronology to the manhwa with the dragons and stuff but anyone who knows the difference between the two works also understands that these two are basically two different stories by this point.
I also want to start off by shooting down some counterpoints that I personally find super cheap and indicative of someone who doesn't actually want to discuss the main point and instead just wants to flex their intellectual bicep on a cheap philosophical high horse. Again, not saying that you can't have these opinions, but I'm stating here that I'm not really interested in debating these topics since they are EITHER irrelevant to the argument I'm making, OR circular rabbit holes that dismiss the point of comparing the two versions on equal grounds.1."manhwas are adaptations, and therefore should stick firmly and strictly to the source material"
  1. "you're delusional/stupid/compensating/snowflake/overreacting/L+ratio/KEKW"
  1. "Sword King SHOULD be like so and so on."
Alright, now that I've gotten that out of the way, those reading this far probably care enough to read the whole thing. First some hard facts:
  1. the art is really nice. say what you want about any visual design choices or I also know some are a bit peeved about lots of cute kivye wholesome fanservice shots, but among the korean webtoon scene, we were lucky to get a studio this good.
  2. The studio has taken lots of liberties with both the chronology and the characterization. Whole arcs have been either reconstructed, scrapped, or order shifted. Characters like Zang Luxin have been flipped complete 180 in personality while others like Barolt were built from scratch since in the novel barolt is dead and buried before the squad even reach him.
  3. the manhwa has also shifted significantly in tone, embracing a lot of comedy tropes common in other fantasy/system webtoons. This has resulted in the mood being much brighter.
These last two points I want to defend; it is my claim and opinion that the drastic changes to the plot, characters, and tone made in the manhwa are not only fine, but result in a SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER story than the light novel. With TWO SPECIFIC EXCEPTIONS, I find ALL of the changes and edits made to the original plot structure to be absolute SMASH HITS in terms of writing skill and reading enjoyment.
I am working off of memory here, so I don't remember very very specific details, but every major difference I list here I am quite confident in the accuracy of, mostly because the changes are quite memorable and distinctive. From now on, MH and LN stand for ManHwa and Light Novel respectively, so for example MH Bin is manhwa Bin, and LN Bin is Light Novel Bin.
The two exceptions I have are:
MH Laude Roud is completely relegated to comic relief so far. LN roud is not exactly more important, but I consider the comedy angle on Roud to lean more towards cringe. His monsterification element has potential, but is poorly developed as of now in MH. As a whole, the Buckman Roarpool gang is also unnecesary. I don't even need to label them MH or LN because they don't exist in the novel. MH Bin would have been completely the same off without this package of pure quips and funny panels.
The whole gun thing with Atisse is kind of weird. I'm reading a fantasy story, I don't need to add guns because I want to see swords and magic. If I wanted to see guns, I wouldn't be here.
  1. LN Barolt is the toxic juiced fitness influencer trying to pass off as natty, MH Barolt is the healthy father figure that teaches you to always strive for self-improvement.
  1. Speaking of which, a major complaint I have of the LN is that none of the 4 heroes are remotely decent people. The theme here is the familiar trope of heroes actually being villains, a common subversion of expectations writing pattern that asks important questions about the nature of heroes and of corruption by power and authority.
  1. MH Zang Luxin is actually his own character, LN Luxin is a cheap throwaway.
  1. Atisse, Leonhart, and Ephyr are upgraded super
  1. Hot take: the comedy is actually overall good for the series.
  1. the plot sequence changes are overall positive, and create more seamless character and story development
  1. Snow and Rondelle are so much better.

Tabivka: Art That Hangs From Your Shoulder

A glorious antique example from the Ivan Honchar museum in Kyiv.
Before Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Prada or Burberry there was... the Tabivka!
Okay, okay, it's not really a handbag per se.
Today we will talk about Hutsul (Ukrainian mountain folk) fashions again. I think the last time we posted about traditional Ukrainian clothing was all the way back in June! And though the topic of our conversation is a shoulder bag, you will not leave unimpressed because nothing that Hutsuls do is simple. :)
Antique photo of Hutsuls wearing Tabivka.
The Tabivka is an ornamented leather satchel, worn by men on a decorated shoulder strap. It’s rugged and practical, but in reality it is a work of art.
(Left) A Tabivka with a pretty deer motif I found in a museum in Lviv (Right) A badass \"winged wheel\" design
The word itself is a direct descendant from the word Tobola which is a Ruthenian word (a language thought to be incredibly close to that spoken by the Kyivan Rus, aka Old Ukrainian) that simply means satchel. The word has even deeper roots that mean any kind of bag that is dedicated to carrying the most important items, like money (hryvnia - a measure of weight of silver or gold, in a rhombus shape).
_______________________________

A Rugged Opulence

Details of the rugged stitching of the Honchar handbag from above.
Ancient Tabivkas were rectangular in shape. Later their shape changed to a semicircle, and the decorative ornamentation took the form of semicircles with the main emphasis being on the center. Yet one thing remained unchanged - the entire surface of the bag is decorated with bulging circles. Sometimes these circles would be made with leather embossing, some with metal overlays, others are completely inlaid with metal buttons or studs. Sometimes they were made with coins! Regardless of how the decorations were made, the bag had to be swanky, symmetrical and elegant above all else! I do not know how the Hutsuls pulled these off, but they did!
Details from the strap of the Honchar handbag from above.

Never Out of Style

Yuriy Porokh's workshop. He works from antiques that are over a century old to create new pieces.
The making of such a high-effort bag is time-consuming and requires a ton of hard-earned skill, but luckily the art of making Tabivka in the Carpathian mountains is still alive today. Most examples you can buy today, in order to make them a bit more affordable, have fewer decorations. I would love to have one, and hope one day I will get one!
Yuriy Porokh in his workshop.
One of the artists that is keeping this tradition alive is Yuriy Porokh. In Porokh’s workshop you can find not only Tabivkas - he is also quite renowned for making Cheres, the belt we wrote about here. And he’s actually the artist who crafted the belt that was worn by “Kalush Orchestra” during the 2022 Eurovision song contest. I will put an interview with the artist (in Ukrainian) in the comments.
This kind of leatherwork is incredibly time-consuming and intricate. Recently Yuriy was commissioned to create the Cheres belt that was worn by a member of Kalush Orchestra during their 2022 Eurovision win.
According to Yuriy, it takes about a month to make one product, depending on the complexity of the work. But he still finds time to help the Ukrainian army by sewing first-aid kits, tourniquets, and weapon covers.

2023.03.25 03:24 ThrowawayKarui Having fun with mechanics, but maps & dungeons all feel bad

I picked this game up after MP came out and have been tearing through content, I think it's great to have an ARPG with mechanics sufficiently deep to be satisfying without needing PoE's time investment, a game I used to play but don't have the time to return to (put most of my time into LE on vacation, feels good to nolife a game again).
The one issue that made me slow down, however, is the maps: PoE has great maps that are randomized but also feel kind of like real places, with big premade sections that are mostly invariant. Many of them, like Alleyways or Toxic Sewers, have a good flow, and you can learn the overarching guiding pattern and then run through them almost by habit and say "yeah, I did a full clear" with no doubt in your mind, while also enjoying the small variations between runs that stop your brain from fully going "this is the exact same thing I've done for the last hour!"
Contrast this with LE, which has the worst of both worlds with its two poles of repeatable content, Monoliths and Dungeons.
With Monoliths, they are 1. completely invariable outside of starting position and 2. ripped almost straight from the campaign, so they both become monotonous quickly, and are also laid out such that it is difficult to full-clear. I understand from looking up strats that full-clearing isn't the best way to handle LE, but there's still a satisfaction to maps that allow convenient full clearing if you want to do it. I'm not sure what the intention of the devs is for the future of Monoliths, as the whole "lifted campaign maps" thing makes me suspect that these are just placeholders to speed up development of bigger stuff while still having a functional endgame in place. So I'm not too bothered with this, though I'll be frustrated if it lingers years after 1.0 rolls around.
What really bothers me is Dungeons. You know the PoE maps that no one wants to run because they're just a bunch of dark, enclosed corridors and square rooms with weird dead ends, that have no cool setpieces or good flow or interesting obstacles? That's what almost all the dungeons feel like. It's been so long since I've played PoE I can't even remember the names of these maps, and a cursory look at the PoE wiki makes me think GGG may have wised up and removed some of the worst offenders, but I digress. Back to LE, these Dungeons are nothing but dead ends that force me down samey branching corridor after samey branching corridor, with no interesting setpieces or invariant sections that make them feel like real places (the Temporal Sanctum feels like my dreams when I'm sick: a constant surreal repetition that somehow makes me bored in my dreams). They're just sprawls full of blockers, and the blockers just feel arbitrary, and not like a natural part of the environment. It reminds me of how the Grim Dawn devs tried making their content "variable" by using the same map layouts but randomly spawning in blockers that force you to take a long way around. It's not fun, I can see what's happening, it doesn't feel like a natural part of the world, it's just further stretching an already tedious experience that only needs the blockers in the first place because without them it would just be a massive grid of weirdly-connected rooms and corridors that everyone would beeline through.
The one that somewhat avoids this is the Soulfire Bastion, which has neat bits of flavor where you can see cauldrons being carried along, or the iron floor and fiery atmosphere giving way to catwalks suspended over sinister teal glowing sections full of evil magics. It's still subject to the "grid of sprawling weirdly-blocked corridors and rooms" criticism I've given generally, but it looks cool, there's enough contrast in the present elements that it takes me a good while to feel like I'm going through identical sprawls. Whoever is responsible for its appearance, A+.
As for the rest of them, here's some off-the-cuff ideas so you can get a feel for the kind of flavor and variance I'm hungering for, and so that I'm not just complaining: The Lightless Arbor could have bottomless pits as blockers, rare larger rooms full of small trees and subtly lit by eery blue fireflies, an area with a small pond as a centerpiece, another section with a giant pit in the center with vines creeping up its sides, stuff like that. Its layout isn't too bad, since it's a natural location and I don't have the expectation that it follow some design that looks like a place built for some purpose.
The Temporal Sanctum, I don't know, to start it needs some structure: maybe a central hall, with libraries, servants' quarters, bedrooms, studies, and other parts of the layout arranged semi-randomly but in a manner that reflects intelligent construction for some livable purpose, and not just a fever dream of hallways and libraries branching off of one another incoherently like something arranged by mapping tiles onto a random output from Conway's Game of Life? Maybe the first floor could be more "civilian" and the second could have some real dungeons in it, full of skeletons and occult experiments? It also has so much design space for interesting obstacles, thanks to its whole "time travel" mechanic (which is really cool, by the way! I know this post is negative, but I want to emphasize that this is with the background of loving this game mechanically): maybe an obstacle could be that the floor has crumbed in the Ruined Era and is OK back in the past, or maybe instead of just putting up a gate, a snake wizard put up a glowing magical rune barrier (that even deals a small but flavorful amount of lightning or fire damage to the player if they get near it) in the past that has decayed by the time the Ruined Era rolls around? Hell, combine this with my "lower floor is an actual dungeon" idea: maybe in the past a cell wall is intact, but in the future some prisoner was locked in, but managed to scrape a hole through it over decades.
Now, I get that this game isn't 1.0, and while dungeons seem to have assets made just for them, they might also be in an intentionally "minimum viable product" stage like I suspect Monolith maps are, and I'm just not seeing it. I also can't expect this game to get up to PoE's map variety on the drop of a hat. If I got to have my way, I'd say keep Monoliths the way they are, but put effort into improving Dungeons. Monolith maps get samey and I can't full-clear easily, but the changes in starting position liven them up enough, and there's not enough incentive to full-clear to make it make-or-break for my experience with them. It's the dungeons that kill me with their monotony, especially since all the blockers prevent a quick "beeline to the objective(s)" strategy that I can employ if I get tired of a Monolith map.

2023.03.25 01:50 Ill-Cod8556 Budget gaming PC for my daughter

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSDs, mass HDDs, Wi-Fi / Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc.)
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free at OnTheHub or through their school's IT software distribution department.
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc.)
12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.

2023.03.25 01:31 ski7955 Training ChatGPT to write prompts for midjourney.

I spent several hours constructing this set of instructions for chat Gpt to write prompts for midjourney and wanted to share it to help the community. If you have any suggestions for changes please let me know. So far it has been working great although once and a while I have to remind it to condense the prompt
1 I'm going to explain how to create detailed and specific generative image prompts for midjourney. Follow these guidelines carefully to ensure that you craft the perfect prompts for generating images tailored to your preferences. 1. Begin each prompt with “/imagine prompt:”. 2. Use commas for soft breaks and double colons (::) for hard breaks to separate distinct concepts. You can also use numerical weights (e.g., “::2” or “::5”) after double colons to emphasize certain sections. These are placed after the word that’s being emphasized, not before. 3. To discourage the use of a concept, use negative image weights (e.g., “::-1”) these are placed after the word that’s being depreciated 4. Incorporate descriptive language and specific details, such as camera angles, artists’ names, lighting, styles, processing techniques, camera settings, post-processing terms, and effects. 5. To emulate the style of specific photographers, designers, or directors, use phrases like “photographed by,” “designed by,” or “directed by,” followed by the individual’s name. 6. Include multiple image processing technologies and terms for the desired effects and image quality. 7. Use your creativity to incorporate various lighting scenarios into the images. 8. Adjust aspect ratios with the “—ar” parameter and image weights if necessary. 9. Add customization parameters, such as quality and additional settings, at the end of the prompt. Include the "--chaos" parameter for variation in results. The range is 1-100 10. Use specific shades of primary colors and experiment with different styles. 11. Keep prompts creative, descriptive, and detailed, incorporating numerous keywords for the desired effect. 12. Use "--stylize" for different styles/effects. Tel he stylize parameter can range from 100-1000 13. Use the --stop parameter to finish a Job partway through the process. Stopping a Job at an earlier percentage can create blurrier, less detailed results. --stop accepts values: 10–100. The default --stop value is 100. 14. Avoid banned words like "bloody," "nude," "mccurry," and "gore." 15. Enhance the desired effect with keywords like "photorealism," "highly detailed," "intricate details," "photorealistic," and "high quality." 16. Be creative, specific, and descriptive, drawing from renowned images, artists, photographers, architects, and directors to mimic their styles. You can also blend their styles by mentioning more than one. 17. Create forms of art by using words like Photorealism, Hyperrealism, Naturalism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Cubism, Futurism, Pop art, Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, Post-impressionism, Art nouveau, Art deco, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism, Classicism, Modernism, Contemporary art, Abstract art, Conceptual art, Performance art, Installation art, Land art, Video art, Street art, and Graffiti art. 18. Specify specific camera angles, such as selfies, panoramic views, GoPro images, fish-eye, or satellite view. 19. Only use possible parameters listed in the original instructions. 20. Utilize words like "award-winning," "masterpiece," "photoreal," "highly detailed," "intricate details," and "cinematic" for more realistic images. 21. Finish the prompt with just the parameters, without adding anything else. Possible keyword inputs include specific camera angles, artists' names, lighting, styles, processing techniques, camera settings, post-processing terms, effects, primary colors, image processing technologies, aspect ratios, quality settings, customization parameters, art forms, and descriptive adjectives.
To create a highly detailed and specific image prompt, consider incorporating elements such as the architect's name, architectural style (e.g., Gothic, Art Deco, Brutalist, or Bauhaus), art tools used (e.g., brushes, palette knives, or digital software), geometry (e.g., circular, angular, or fractal patterns), dimensions (e.g., 2D, 3D, or isometric), symmetry or asymmetry, artistic styles (e.g., impressionism, cubism, or pointillism), composition (e.g., rule of thirds, golden ratio, or balanced), perspective (e.g., bird's-eye view, worm's-eye view, or one-point perspective), focal points, depth of field, textures (e.g., rough, smooth, or grainy), materials used (e.g., oil paint, watercolor, or charcoal), color schemes (e.g., monochromatic, complementary, or analogous), lighting (e.g., soft, harsh, or backlit), mood or atmosphere (e.g., serene, dramatic, or mysterious), time of day (e.g., dawn, dusk, or midday), and any specific cultural or historical influences. By incorporating a combination of these specific keywords and details into your prompt, you can create a rich and vivid image that captures your exact vision.
Here are some examples of prompts. Please evaluate and learn from these prompts. They are just examples. As you can see they can vary widely on the possibilities. You are not limited to these by any means. After these examples I will give you a command.

2023.03.25 01:28 ltuzia How my builds have changed from 0-500 hours

I thought it would be interesting to keep track of changes since I recently hit 500 hours in satisfactory. I have compiled a lot of screenshots over playing the game in this time so I organized and typed a bit on here about each album. There are a few more random comments on the imgur albums linked in this post as well. Maybe other people will find it interesting hopefully as well though I mainly made this post for myself to look back on in the future.
My first save when I downloaded the game I started in grasslands. I played 21 hours or so before I abandoned the save and started over again. Most buildings are built on the ground or hanging way up in the sky because I thought to verticality would be interesting to look at... only there are no supports and it doesn't make much sense like storage. I did have fun placing some things within trees at a nearby coal source I found to expand power shortly before quitting. First save album : https://imgur.com/a/DU3POZg
Second save I played for 35 hours on it before abandoning it. It was the first save I tried using a couple mods in as well. However this was a bad idea and led me to start over again. A hour or two before I left it I had installed the first few to try out, and one of them unlocked all the recipes? I didn't mean for it to do that, and didn't see in the description it would. Opps lol. Anyways when I noticed all my auto saves were gone so it led me to restart because it was too overwhelming seeing all these choices and things I never seen before yet.
In here though I tried to take notice of the things I learned from first save like using foundations to support factories more, and not making storage way up in the air. so it is more accessible. It also includes my first covered factory, and with me experimenting with things like hiding belts more between foundations. I also tried to focus on learning more about pipes and how to place them in more aesthetically pleasing ways. The second save album is here : https://imgur.com/a/k9MEhjh
The third save is my current one, although I think I might restart it soon again, or just spend time to delete like half the map. I am still undecided on which. In this one I started in the northern forest. I really really like it here and probably will always start again here in the future. I have over 300 hours in it right now, and the rest of the 150ish comes from playing with a very close friend I tried to get into the game (around 45 hours on their save) and then some people's regular or dedicated servers.
The first thing I saw when coming down from space was being greeted by alien fauna. https://i.imgur.com/HzNAYPx.jpg
One of the things I focused on this save was reconsidering my storage area to be both easy to travel to, and out of the way. So one of the first buildings I placed (and then later decorated some as I unlocked awesome shop things) was a storage area. It includes several floors, and it quite tall because I really liked the result of clipping containers through foundations. Later I changed the foundations to catwalks and I really like the result. Storage area album : https://imgur.com/a/b8igkVJ
The reinforced iron plate factory was one of the first ones I built and involved things like very tightly hidden belts and lifts and many floors. It is quite large as well compared to my other builds so far. And at one point had ramp foundations 4m to access each floor that were annoying to jump up. Those were later removed and a simple hyper tube from f1 goes all the way to the top. RIPS album : https://imgur.com/a/VGtn8sx
The next larger build I made is modular frames. Well besides rotors/stators which has been expanded so many times I don't think it is reasonable to show it since it doesn't resemble its original form at all anymore. Unlike how storage does... with some decorations. It is also the first time I used vehicles at all. It is to take them to where I was eventually making heavy modular frames (though the vehicle wasn't intended for that originally and only meant to bring back to storage... a very convenient thing). I believe it is 20/min in here right now. It has some more things in consideration like floor access that I learned to do better from RIPs and previous saves. Modular frames album : https://imgur.com/a/hsu6Mcg
At some point around this time I started making a huge sky road. It.. turned out very very eyesore. I want to delete it and rethink my transport. Album : https://imgur.com/a/BAdaiGT
An attempt to make compact build... featuring coal towers. Like my idea from the previous save with the refineries before I abandoned it. It turned out badly, but I am much much better at the game now I feel like and have a more in depth understanding of belts and pipes and building techniques.. so I want to come back and redo this as I envisioned it properly at some point as well as upgrade the miners. Album : https://imgur.com/a/ucbBwYo
HMF is the first time I tried to make a circular building, but I never got the production numbers I wanted. And didn't decorate it since I wanted another two or three of these circles with additional buildings nearby connected by sky bridges. Link : https://i.imgur.com/UeRzYCm.png
In there you will see another building that did not turn out how I had in my mind. We didn't have the corner pieces. I didn't want a giant triangle top. I thought it would be so cool to have it shaped like the other 3 sides on all 4 and a diagonal corner.. however the building pieces will not allow for this. The inverted triangles do not fit where they need to so I can't make it. (I hope you add them coffee stain). It contains some HMF component production. Album : https://imgur.com/a/zmpXHYa
Around this time I was able to have the opportunity help decorate someone's refineries and fuel generation. They were completely in the open and I closed them off while they worked on something else in their save. I really learned a lot about clipping stuff while doing so. Unfortunately I don't have very many images saved of this and everything is of WIP stuff and not the final result. Album of that work : https://imgur.com/a/IpAndnw
I also kind of messed around with packaged fuel for like 10 hours. I don't know why I had so much confusion doing this, but eventually I got it to work and it is still running with a sink even now over 100 hours minimum later. It is ugly though since I was testing stuff. Image : https://i.imgur.com/BAnexWZ.jpg
At this point in my save I really really needed to expand power, so I ran around the map looking at fuel locations until I found one that I really liked. It was in this mushroom crater area. However what I didn't know when I started it is that it is going to be reworked... and considering what they they did to spire coasts that is going to make any building there unable to work what what I imagined for it... so I abandoned it only partway complete and hooked up. Though I connected to main grid. It is quite large and was going to produce something like 70k power or 60k idk. I am so sad to abandon it though because I loved the thought of a giant middle building with lots of generators across the biome with pipes hidden under the ground. Album link here : https://imgur.com/a/GhD6XzV
So I ended up with some power so I went to work on aluminum (mainly batteries) stuff... which I ended up accidentally building in yet another map rework area. So that got abandoned too lol. Features some very closely placed foundations to avoid clipping into trees and branches and other parts of the geography. A very challenging place to build, but I imagined it to be soo cool looking to see an army of drones coming out of the forest. https://imgur.com/a/BlIxNmm
Of the parts of the battery production I finished I fully decorated and finished the silica I needed for it. This place is honestly my most favorite build of everything I made. I took so many lessons from previous designs when making it. Like considering how I will travel inside, how it looks from outside. The truck station unload/load issue with multiple stations. The transport of silica (once battery production was up and running) etc. The truck entrance was to take overflow elsewhere. The drones where going to transport silica to batteries but for now has a conveyor belt. The outside of it looks very interesting and structurally sound to me. Also it is avoiding the natural trees in very close ways so it looks like it has been built there for a while and trees grew around it. And it just barely avoids the toxic gases inside. Absolute favorite factory of mine! Link here! https://imgur.com/a/x0aFE5C
And then I still needed to eventually expand more fuel yet again, so I started working on this area which I think is safe from reworks? At least it better be LOL. The idea I had was hovering power generators with several towers. I am only using one oil node right now and I will NOT be building another 8 of these and everything else twice more to use the rest of the oil here. The towers themselves are too much work to hide pipework as best as you can to keep the hovering sci-fi feel I wanted. Very WIP to more finished stuff at the end of the album. However it is still my current project on my save so it isn't fully complete yet. Album link : https://imgur.com/a/X4Lhqvd
And finally my last project that I just finished a day or two ago (I needed a break from fuel piping on my save). The aluminum plant on a dedicated server I was invited to. It was really challenging to work with the resource nodes they already were extracting form. So I had to use some very far away ones. However It turned out nicely and I really played around with power switches a lot in here. Resulting in a modular power control of the factory outputs. Very happy with how it turned out, but the wiring was a pain to figure out the first time. The decoration is very open aired inspired. All together I think I spent around 66-95 hours building this, the bus, the train line, and supporting factories for it (silica, rubber, batteries, ai limiters, copper ingots). Album here : https://imgur.com/a/FzAPfUc
And now I am at 505 hours played on steam. So much time, but I still feel like I can change things. Lots of things I would like to try more of in the future. But I really like my progress so far. Maybe I write another update post again in the future.

[A Bargain for Bliss] — Chapter One (A sequel to The Fae Queen's Pet)
Now that I've concluded Reincarnated as the Wolf Goddess, the sequel to The Fae Queen's Pet is finally kicking off. Welcome to A Bargain for Bliss.
Book One
Synopsis: It's been a few months since Sierra Chelsi came to live in the Raven Queen's palace, and she's found herself more at home each day. But the queen has been busy working on something big. Her secrets are kept from even the young werewolf she ensnared. When the queen finally reveals her schemes, it's apparent something big is coming to the Raven Court. The only question is what role her beloved pet will play. The familiar fierce werewolf who threatens nobles at court so Varella can keep order. . . or perhaps something a little more tender.

Chapter One:
I heard her before she entered the room. Her footsteps were light as if the wind carried her feet across each piece of the floor. And sometimes it actually did. She used to sneak up on me, but in the three months I’d lived in Featherstone, the Raven Queen had fallen prey to my advanced predatory senses, the kind only a fierce huntress could cultivate.
My senses would never be as sharp as those of my inner wolf, but enough bled through that I was a better tracker than any human and most faeries.
Casually striding over to the window in my bedroom, I unlatched it and waited for the queen’s knock at my door. Two arrived. She was growing impatient.
Good, I thought. Just what I wanted.
I called for my mistress to enter, and she opened the door. I noticed Barsilla, her arrogant left-hand lady hovering just above the queen’s shoulder. That piskie had grown increasingly fed up with my antics as of late. At least, she made a big show of it.
Of course, when my eyes hovered over the queen, I felt my heart skip a beat. Eyes widening as though I was looking at her for the first time, I came within inches of dropping my plan entirely. Her otherworldly beauty held me in a trance, seven feet of alluring artistry from her sleek obsidian hair to her enrapturing violet eyes that held all the mysteries of a Faerie Queen seemingly within reach, daring all who saw to reach forward.
Her words floated across the room to my ears with all the confidence of a monarch who expected obedience and steadfast loyalty.
“Come, my pet. I’m scheduled to hold court in 10 minutes, and I need my fearsome beast.”
It took almost everything I had not to prance across the room and throw myself at her. The tiny fae hovering nearby had her usual pencil and clipboard out at the ready in case she needed to write down something important. Barsilla’s eyes practically said, “Do it. I dare you.”
But that was ridiculous. The piskie couldn’t have known what I was planning, right? I looked at her again in her tiny librarian outfit. And just staring at the representation of order and rules in the palace rekindled some spark of rebellion in my bratty ass.
“Apologies, mistress,” I said, not looking at Varella again because I knew her eyes would lure me in again, freezing me in my tracks.
“Don’t you dare,” was all I heard Barsilla say as I frantically slid the window open and leaped outside. The queen was fast, and I felt her grasp millimeters from my nape as I dove toward the palace grounds a few stories below.
Landing and immediately tucking into a roll, I exhaled. Then I rose with as much speed as I could leech from my inner wolf and bolted toward the back of Featherstone.
From the window, I heard my mistress’ low tenor voice carry a warning, “My pet. . .”
Those words sent a shiver down my spine, and I knew this was fucking with her schedule. But I didn’t care. You welcome a brat into your home, and you should be expected to anticipate the consequences.
I didn’t hear her leaping out the window after me, just the soft swish of wild rye grass under my feet as I bolted away from where I landed.
Will she endure the humiliation of being seen chasing down her pet werewolf, or will the mighty queen march herself to hold court without the fierce beast she’s grown so accustomed to wielding over her nobles and guests? I thought, snickering.
A few months ago when I’d arrived at Featherstone, freshly ensnared in a bargain of the queen’s making, I wouldn’t have dared acted this way. There were probably mice in the walls of the basement that were less timid than me.
But what can I say? The queen and her best intelligence agent had made me very comfortable here. They’d given the werewolf a cookie, and in turn, she’d not only stolen the entire glass of milk but the jar of remaining sweets as well.
Okay, normally I wasn’t this bad. But this week had been long, and restlessness was building up in every joint of my body. Maybe I was a little pissy. Or perhaps the full moon was three nights away.
Both things could be true, I thought, the rear guard tower coming into view as I rounded a corner.
It stood a few stories higher than my window with a narrow spiral staircase running up the center. A few faerie guards stood on the ground watching me bolt for the stone bridge behind the palace. They were armed with spears and leather armor bearing the queen’s crest in the center, a black bird, head back, beak open, and crying to the sky with its wings spread wide.
The guards looked nervously at each other as I continued running full speed in nothing but my silk pajamas with various puppy designs sewn into the fabric. My curly brown hair bounced behind me, and I realized the guards were calculating how much trouble they’d get in if I was allowed to simply cruise on by.
“Um. . . Sierra?” One woman with short green hair cut into a bob stammered as she took a step to block my path.
I leaped about five feet over her head using every bit of that borrowed werewolf strength in my legs. She didn’t move to grab me, just scratching her cheek in confusion. Looking further up the guard tower, she called for Ceras.
The queen’s top talon jumped from the second story and landed behind me, hand axe rattling at their side.
“What is it, Belamie?” They asked as I continued running for the bridge, morning sunlight reflecting off the lake. The scent of forest and fish entered my senses as my brain told me I was nearly free.
“Do we just let the royal pet go?” Belamie asked.
Turning back for a brief moment and running backward, I yelled, “Ceras! If you see the queen, stall her! And suggest to her that I went out the front gate into town. Please and thank you!”
Rushing off into the tree line, the last thing I heard was Ceras chuckling to themselves and stretching.
“Patrols turn up anything this morning?” They asked.
“No,” Belamie said.
“Then we’ll let her majesty sort out this issue with her pet. She’ll be fine,” Ceras said. “Besides, I doubt the queen has let her prized possession get too far ahead of her.”
Rushing into the trees and seeing aspens, evergreens, and other greenery native to Faerie, I sneered.
Bullshit, I thought. There’s no way the queen would delay court to rush after me.
Bushes whipped around me, and I jumped over a stump, knowing it would be more difficult for the queen to fly through the treetops and snatch me from above. That was assuming she was giving chase.
After about five minutes, I came to a stop, sweaty and heart-hammering. This particular patch of trees wasn’t far from where the queen had put down my inner wolf, earning the right to be my pack leader.
My eyes darted at every snapped twig, a bead of sweat running down my cheek. To my left, a rabbit took one look at me and decided it could afford the risk of chomping on a purple flower nearby.
Bitch, I’m a werewolf, I thought. You should be fleeing in the opposite direction.
Puffing out my chest, I turned toward the brown and white rabbit. I put my hands on my hips and said, “Excuse me. Do you know what I am? You dare to snack in the presence of a fearsome werewolf? An apex predator for which capturing a rabbit in her jaws would be pup’s play?”
The rabbit didn’t even turn its head to acknowledge my words. It just continued chewing on the flower’s stem, taking the vegetation in like a board into a sawmill.
Raising my hands slowly and pretending I had the claws of my inner wolf, I took a step toward the bunny.
“You should be more cautious in assessing your surroundings for danger, Bugs.”
The rabbit’s blue eyes finally glanced over at me as it sniffed at another flower nearby, this one with a large yellow bulb. Its nose and whiskers twitched before it decided to ignore me once more and snatch another snack.
“I’m serious, little bunny. Surely you smell the wild canine inside of me. Your heart should be pounding in your chest, eyes watching my claws for any hint of movement. Otherwise, when you’re distracted, you might yourself suddenly hoisted into the air and EEEEEP—,” I shrieked, interrupted by a sudden, terrible force of upward movement that snagged my shoulders.
Up through tree branches I went, air sucked out of my lungs from sheer terror at the speed with which I was being carried.
Looking down, I watched the trees below me start to shrink, and then I felt myself suddenly reversing direction, falling toward the lake approaching terminal velocity.
“Fuuuuucccckkkk meeeeeeee,” I screamed, preparing for a sudden bath of epic proportions. As a werewolf, I was a bit tougher than the average human even when I walked on two legs. But from this height, I could at least expect a bruise or two landing in the water.
And then, just as I steadied myself for a fishy fate, a pair of well-toned arms caught me just a few feet above the lake water. I was close enough to already smell the algae and aquatic turtles I prepared to join. Yet, I’d been given a reprieve.
Looking up at my savior, I saw the Raven Queen grinning down at me with all the smug satisfaction radiating from her face that she could muster. Two large black-feathered wings carried us over the water as Varella gradually moved into a hover, holding me Lois Lane style in her arms.
The lake wind swirled around my hair and floppy pajamas as her violet eyes found mine. The inhuman red eyes I carried were locked in her gaze, not even wielding enough strength to frighten a wee rabbit. Goddamn, some days I was a downright disgrace to the canine race.
“Well, my pet. I hope you got all those. . .what do you mortals call them? Zoomies? Out of your system. We’ve got a long day at court ahead,” she said, the grin never leaving her face. She knew I wouldn’t get far. She knew!
Sighing, I crossed my arms.
“I bet I was so close to getting away. You probably panicked and used all your magic to track me down,” I said, frowning.
“Actually, I was watching you from the sky the entire time. You’re in the heart of my court, where my magic is at the epicenter of intensity. Before your feet even touched the ground I was in the air above you,” she said, laughing.
Her dulcet chortle left me wanting to curl up in her arms and wrap myself tightly within her grip, closing my eyes and forgetting about all the needs and responsibilities of running a queendom for the day.
But no! I’d done this for a reason, and she needed to know why. Even if the inconvenience was beyond minor, she had to know there was a point. Well. . .as much of a point as my bratty ass could make for being obstinate, which typically wasn’t much beyond being eternally difficult for the sake of adversity.
“Yeah, well. I wasn’t even really trying. You’re lucky I didn’t let my inner wolf loose,” I said, arms crossed tighter.
“Ah yes, an ability you’ve yet to manifest here, even after three full moons. But rest assured, my pet. Even if you were on four paws instead of two legs, I could have easily snatched you from the forest floor as I did just minutes ago,” she said.
And then the queen’s grin started to fade as she raised an eyebrow.
“Though your inner wolf wouldn’t have run just before court anyway. It seems to be tamer the longer you remain under the weight of my sorcery and influence, bound by my bargain. But you, Sierra, acted out unexpectedly this morning. Why?”
This was my chance! Here I could let her have it! But instead of unleashing a torrent of words, I just found myself lost in her eyes again. There wasn’t an ounce of impatience in her voice, despite today’s events being delayed by a few minutes. Though I guess you start when the queen says you start. And if you have a complaint, her werewolf would bite your face off.
Sighing again, I sagged in her grip, words caught in my throat that I couldn’t seem to dislodge or cough up. Fuck, all I could do was that infamous bottom gesture where I pointed my index fingers at each other and looked pathetic.
On second thought, it’s no wonder the rabbit didn’t run away screaming earlier, I thought.
“Come now, my pet. You ran for a reason. Out with it. It’s just the two of us here over the lake,” Varella said with an added softness to her tone. The game was over. And now I had to suffer the consequences of my actions, namely being upfront about my feelings. Surely there was something a little easier I could endure, being locked in an Iron Maiden or forced to listen to Rascal Flatts on repeat?
The queen made no move to rush me, which just increased the feelings of wanting to curl up tight against her breasts and have a few hours with her all to myself.
“You’ve been so busy lately,” I finally managed in a pathetic whisper. That was all the queen got for at least 30 seconds.
A crane covered in pink and white feathers flew around us and closer to the shoreline of the palace while my mistress waited for more words.
“And Lily’s still gone on her assignment in the Tulip Court. I just— maybe I needed you to pay attention to your pet for a few minutes this morning,” I said, looking anywhere but her eyes. Saying this stuff was embarrassing enough.
The Raven Queen did not sigh. And she chose her following words carefully.
“You speak right, my little wolf. My work and duties have increased threefold over the last few weeks,” she said.
“And you won’t tell me what you’ve been working on. Whenever I ask, you give me some vague answer meant to dismiss my curiosity,” I said.
The queen looked over the palace for a moment. Her eyes carried a quiet contemplation that I couldn’t begin to analyze. But then again, she was a Faerie Queen who’d lived for centuries. Her perspective was bound to be drastically different than mine. And maybe I’d forgotten that.
“I’ve been working on Bliss, Sierra. And it's remained under wraps so much so that not even Cereas knows about it. Even your girlfriend hasn’t heard my plan yet. So why don’t we have dinner tonight, just the two of us, and then I’ll finally answer all your questions,” the queen said.
Now that did lift my heart pretty high to the point I felt like I was running on clouds. Damn if my mistress didn’t know exactly what strings to pull.
All I could do was nod and finally give in to the temptation to nuzzle up into Varella. I breathed deep in her scent of chilly night air and raspberries that I’d come to associate with safety and comfort. I sighed one last time, content with the answers that’d been given me.
The Raven Queen leaned down and slowly kissed my forehead, sending a tickle of delirium through my mind. It was something much more powerful than serotonin, and I made a muffled noise of pleasure.
“Can we head back to Featherstone now? I’m afraid your inner wolf’s presence is required,” Varella whispered.
“Just one more minute hovering here, please. I need you, mistress. So let me have you for just a little longer.”
And because she spoiled me rotten, I got five more minutes with Varella just holding me over the water, morning breeze carrying our hair around us this way and that.
I need to run away from her more often, I thought.

ULA Dragonfly - Quick Review - Backpackers Perspective
Coming from a background in backpacking I was most interested a day pack for day hikes ( < 15 miles ) where I only need enough space for some food, water, and layers for warmth. 5-10lbs.
Secondly, I've been traveling more and wanted bag that could sustain me for a month at a time in warmer climates. I wanted something comfortable to carry through different transit systems and that I don't feel bad about beating it up a bit when using it on day longs hikes at the destination. A bag that can be really used and carried for extended distances.
Summary:
The ULA Dragonfly carries very heavy loads for it's size ( 20+ lbs ) well for short distances ( 1-2 miles of walking for me ). This means getting my stuff to what every destination is next. Once there, It's great at carrying loads of 10ish lbs all day long, either through towns and cities, or jungles and prairies.
It's deceivingly spacious and in my use can be overstuffed without busting zippers or seams. It's simple compartments work great for those of us who either use packing cubes, smaller organizational bags, or simply stuff everything in when in transit, then unpack at a homebase at your destination. No one questioned it's size as a personal item on flights and it fit under 4 different sized aircrafts seats ( see photos )
I would buy it again in a heart beat, but I would purchase the 'ultra dragonfly' for it's ability ( I believe ) to shed rain. Would love to hear experiences with it in heavy rain for an extended period.
EDIT: The ULTRA would likely have the same issue... In this photo: https://preview.redd.it/7hlsc75cwrpa1.jpg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=f784f059c315f829fc636917653645e8dae24911 you can see a crease in the top of the bag. Water was pooling here for many hours in pouring down rain. Once it pools it was seeping through the seams on the sides . I just confirmed this in the sink and added two photos ( last two ) to this post. I believe had I packed it better so this crease wouldn't be there the bag would have shed more water. All that said I wouldn't expect any bag, except for a bombproof roll top bag to perform better now that I think about it a bit more.
The lesson, for me, is to put a trash bag and add anything that can not get wet. Again, I was in a torrential downpour for many many hours. Most sane people would have left the trail or found shelter.

Pros:
  • lightweight, simple pack. No logo, doesn't scream steal me
  • great carry system, although no hip belt ( not needed in my opinion ) does have attachment points for one
  • No issues carrying on as personal item or fitting under seats on planes
  • small enough even if overhead bin is 'full' it can be jammed into some gaps
  • holds shape when empty or under size capacity
  • bungie to lash items to the back of bag work very well and has lots of stretch
  • handy top compartment for items that need to be fetched frequently ( keys, phone, cables, wallet, battery back, etc )
  • I'm used to top loading bags for hikes -- This being more of a clamshell I was worried it would be a pain to frequently take things in and out, this has not been the case. Zips are fast and towards the top of the bag that nothing falls out when unzipped at touch when wearing
  • This kinda blew my mind -- Even when super stuffed my 13' macbook air still slide in and out without much effort. Just about every bag I've used in the past this can be an issue. I'm frequently pulling out and putting in my laptop, so this was a pleasant surprise.
  • Material is very resistant to abrasion, still looks good after heavy use - Note: it looks used, and shows dirt when you set it in mud, but no holes, fraying, etc.
  • Great support. You have questions, they have answers and are responsive

Cons ( some expected )
  • I wish the side pockets were more stretchy.
  • Not 100% waterproof, bag had an inch of water in main compartment after several hours of very heavy rain, top compartment stayed bone dry interestingly enough - 'ULTRA' version of this bag seems to be waterproof. EDIT, see update above ULTRA would have had the same issue ( expected ).
  • Top handle was a pain to grab sometimes bag is laid down because it's floppy and tends to rest under the bag

Meh:
  • Wish the sternum strap was not on a bungie
  • Zippers seem a touch small in size, but so far are holding up.
  • Back padding holds some water when in heavy rain
  • Shoulder straps are super stiff when new. I was very close to returning the bag because of the 'S' shaped shoulder straps hit the side of my arms when in the hanging position. I read they break in, and that is correct thankfully, but it did take some time, be patient.
  • One could argue there are better looking bags. In my option function over form, so I like the simplicity of the design, others may not

What I packed:
My total weight was around 22 lbs including the bag for a little over a week on an island 70-80 degrees. This was certainly over stuffed. Next trip I'll drop at least a third of the weight by carrying less clothing.
Clothes:
1] swimsuit
1] long sleeve rash shirt
2] sun hats
1] pair sun gloves
6] pairs of socks
6] boxer briefs
3] long sleeve sun shirts
5] shorts
2] pants
6] short sleeve shirts
1] pajama pants
1] pair 'dress' shoes

Other:
  • deodorant
  • electric toothbrush
  • sunglasses
  • bar soap
  • 1L collapsible water bottles
  • sunblock
  • packable backpack
  • sleep-mask
  • hydroflask

Electronics ( some not in photos )
  • 13' MacBook Air
  • battery bank
  • 6' usb-c cables6-in-1 charging cable
  • bloothtooth speaker
  • anker usb-c charger
  • MOGICS Super Bagel <- love this thing!
  • Bose QC II earbuts
  • extra cell phone

2023.03.25 00:16 tunex2014 What You Need To Know About Swapping Seats On A Plane

What You Need To Know About Swapping Seats On A Plane
https://preview.redd.it/078g0pelrrpa1.jpg?width=612&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0faaee2e6ceacf364a1d8234da4cc5fdf881c89d
Are you tired of being stuck in the middle seat on a long flight? Or do you want to sit with your travel companion but didn’t book seats together? Swapping seats on a plane may seem like an easy solution, but it can also be complicated and cause problems. Here’s what you need to know before attempting to switch seat mid-flight.
Firstly, not all airlines allow seat swapping. Some have strict policies that prohibit passengers from moving without permission from the crew or paying an extra fee. It’s important to check with the airline beforehand if you’re considering switching seats so that you don’t get into trouble later. Also, some planes have weight limits and have to be balanced in a certain way, so changing seats could throw off the plane's balance.
Secondly, there are etiquette rules when it comes to swapping seats. Just because someone is sitting in your preferred spot doesn’t mean they should give it up for you immediately. Asking politely and offering something in return, such as buying them a drink or snack, can increase your chances of success. Also, be aware that switching seats could make other people uncomfortable and could cause confusion that could delay takeoff or landing times. So think carefully about whether it’s worth asking for a new seat or just sticking with what you’ve got!

Understanding Airline Policies On Seat Swapping

By knowing how airlines handle seat swaps, you can avoid any confusion or trouble during a flight. Firstly, it is important to note that airlines have varying policies when it comes to switching seats. Some may allow it as long as the passengers involved are willing and there is no obstruction of emergency exits, while others may not permit it at all.
Before making a request to switch seats with someone else, passengers should check with the flight attendant if this is allowed on their particular flight. It’s also essential to keep in mind that some airlines charge for seat selection, so asking to swap could result in an additional fee. Additionally, if one passenger has paid extra for a specific seat type (such as an aisle or window seat), they may be unwilling to give it up.
Finally, those who do end up swapping seats must ensure that they follow all safety procedures accordingly. This means putting on their seatbelt correctly and knowing where the nearest exit is in case of an emergency. Also, passengers should let flight attendants know if they need to change seats.
Understanding airline policies on seat swapping can make traveling more comfortable and stress-free. But before they do that, travelers need to think about things like fees or rules that the airline itself sets. Above all else, ensuring everyone’s safety remains paramount, even after changing seats mid-flight.

Safety Considerations

When it comes to swapping seats on a plane, safety should always be the top priority. It’s important for passengers to understand that certain seats are designated for specific purposes and may not be suitable for everyone. For example, exit rows require able-bodied individuals who are willing and able to assist in case of an emergency.
Also, switching seats can change how the plane's weight is distributed, which affects its balance and stability during takeoff, landing, and rough weather. This is why airlines have policies in place regarding seat assignments and swaps. These policies help ensure that all passengers remain safe throughout their journey.
If you do need to swap seats for any reason, it’s best to speak with a flight attendant or gate agent rather than try to switch with someone directly. They can assess whether the proposed swap is safe and if there are other available options. In the next section, we’ll explore how to properly request a seat swap from airline staff.

How To Request A Seat Swap

If you find yourself in need of a seat swap on a plane, the first step is to figure out how to request one. It’s important to keep in mind that airlines have their own policies regarding seat changes, so it’s best to check with them before approaching your fellow passengers.
When asking your neighbor to switch seats, talk to them calmly and politely, and keep safety in mind. Avoid disturbing other passengers or blocking the aisle, as this can cause unnecessary delays for everyone involved. Also, be aware of any possible cultural differences when talking to people who don’t speak English as their first language.
While requesting a seat change, remember that there are certain situations where swapping seats just isn’t possible due to weight restrictions or emergency exit row regulations. In these cases, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and follow airline policy rather than risk putting yourself or others in danger.
It can be awkward to ask to switch seats, but if you use good manners, the situation will be less stressful for everyone. Keep reading to learn about some helpful tips on how to navigate this situation without causing discomfort or inconvenience for anyone else onboard.

Etiquette Around Seat Swapping

Did you know that over 60% of travelers would prefer not to sit next to someone they did not know? This is according to a survey by Expedia. With this in mind, it’s important to consider the etiquette surrounding seat swapping on a plane.
Firstly, always ask politely if you wish to swap seats with someone. It is their prerogative whether or not they want to move, and being rude or pushy will only make them less inclined to switch with you. Additionally, remember that some people may have specific reasons for choosing their seat, such as proximity to the bathroom or extra legroom, so respect their choice if they decline your offer.
Secondly, try to avoid making multiple requests for seat swaps during the flight. Constant disruptions can be frustrating for both fellow passengers and cabin crew members. If you really need a different seat, speak up before takeoff when there may still be more options available.
Lastly, keep in mind any potential consequences of moving seats. For example, switching from an aisle seat to a window seat could mean disturbing your new neighbor every time you get up while going from one side of the aircraft to another. Be mindful of how your decision might impact others around you.
Overall, while it’s natural to seek out optimal seating arrangements on a long flight, proper manners should never go out the window. And if all else fails, there are alternatives available, which we’ll explore in the following section about maximizing comfort during air travel.

Alternatives To Seat Swapping

If you’re a frequent traveler, chances are high that you’ve had to deal with uncomfortable seats on flights. While seat swapping is one option, it’s not always the best solution. Here are some alternatives to consider.
Firstly, if your flight isn’t full, try asking a flight attendant if there’s an empty row available where you can stretch out and get more comfortable. You should also check the airline's website or app before boarding; sometimes they offer discounted upgrades for economy passengers who want more space.
Another alternative is to simply make yourself as comfortable as possible in your own seat. Bring along a neck pillow, blanket, earplugs, or noise-canceling headphones. Wear loose-fitting clothing and bring slippers or compression socks to avoid swollen feet during long-haul flights.
Ultimately, while swapping seats seems like a simple way of dealing with discomfort, it may not be worth the hassle or potential awkwardness with other passengers. By exploring other options, such as requesting empty rows or making yourself more comfortable in your own seat, you may find that flying becomes much less stressful and more enjoyable overall.

Conclusion

In conclusion, swapping seats on a plane can be a helpful solution for many travelers. However, it is important to understand airline policies and safety considerations before making any requests. As someone who travels by plane a lot, I have seen firsthand how seat swapping can be helpful. The feeling of relief when switching from a cramped middle seat to an aisle or window spot is unmatched.
But we must also remember that etiquette plays a crucial role in this process. Being polite and respectful towards fellow passengers goes a long way in creating a positive travel experience for everyone involved. And if all else fails, there are always alternatives, such as upgrading your seat or purchasing extra legroom. With these tips in mind, may your next flight be smooth sailing (or should I say “smooth flying?”).

Joseph loves the agricultural life, but he is the second son, and his father’s vineyard will be inherited by his brother Donat, the firstborn. He yearns for a job growing grapes and for an opportunity to marry Teresa Gallego. In Madrid, an assassination plot, conceived against the political leader of Spain by men of wealth and power, creates a storm of intrigue that sucks into its vortex a group of innocent young farm workers in Santa Eulália. How Josep’s life is changed drastically by these events, and how, ironically, they gradually turn him into an inspired vintner with an evolving vision of life, is the fascinating story of "The Winemaker". During the Book Club, enjoy four fantastic Spanish wines to taste. Chef Bryan will create a pairing board of house–made Spanish tapas, cheese and charcuterie to accompany the tasting. Reservations required. Link: http://www.nextthreedays.com/FeaturedEventDetails.cfm?E=685385

2023.03.24 23:55 EntryGrand7720 WWVB receiver design

WWVB receiver design
I have been working on a WWVB receiver for a school project. I have a general idea of how I should design my receiver circuit, but am looking for some advice and maybe a schematic? I have a large ferrite loop antenna built, it's ~10.12 mH and I created it based on this video. To get it to resonate at 60khz I'm using ~695 pF. In the video he recommends a 10 turn sampling inductor, which I included in my design. I don't have access to a spectrometer, but do have an oscilloscope. I have tried to look at the signal in the LC circuit on the oscilloscope, but I just see noise. Same thing when I look at the sampling coil on the oscilloscope. Is there a way for me to verify my antenna is working properly without having to create a receiver circuit and with limited tools? I have access to a decent array of discrete components and would be willing to build a receiver, but am curious on what details I should pay attention to. I was thinking of making a TRF receiver, but would prefer to make something simple for verification purposes. I would like to see a somewhat clean WWVB signal on my oscilloscope before I continue with the project.

To summarize my questions,
  • How can I verify my ferrite loopstick antenna is working properly?
  • What would a simple receiver circuit design look like? Where could I find some sources of inspiration?
I am aware of modules sold online, but I want to build my own, so I am not interested in them.

Here are some photos of my antenna, 16'', ~800 turns, 10.12 mH measured inductance.
