2023.06.02 23:56 RachelEvening My personal pet peeve with Alters (Or why I'm excited for Executor Alter, but worried for what he and Silence the Paradigmatic could mean for the future of the game)

TL;DR**:** Hypergryph is relying way too much on Alters to give some much needed spotlight to some characters, when Alters shouldn't be a must to give low-rarity characters their own events or plots and if they continue that trend it will kill my hype for their stories, particularly in those cases where an Alter was simply not needed lore-wise before their event (A.K.A Silence Alter).
Welcome everyone to my heavily biased rant that no one but me might agree with and that will most likely be downvoted to oblivion. That's okay, you might have your own take, this is just my opinion. Feel free to disagree with everything I'm about to rant here like the madwoman screaming to the wall that I am right now.
With that out of the way and if you are still reading this, let's begin.

Alters on Arknights: A story-telling tool

...Let's talk about Alters, shall we?
Love them or hate them, they can be a tool for when an unit has potential and powers on their lore that aren't reflected on the original unit for whatever reason, or stuff that is foreshadowed on their lore that has a good reason to be relegated to an Alter unit (Texas having left the mafia for example, or Shining having made an oath to never use her sword again... whenever Shining Alter ever actually happens).
Something I liked going into Arknights is that Alters were rarely used solely as a money-grabbing scheme. They were that too, don't get me wrong, this is still a gacha game, but still... I got the sense that, unlike in other gacha games, Alters in Arknights actually had a narrative purpose, and it was one that wasn't deliberately engineered in a way that you could say that a certain event was just written in such a way to make an Alter happen (There's just 2 examples, maybe 4, of that happening in this game from what I counted, with only 3 of those released in Global right now, but we'll get to those ones in a second), but it was always born from lore that had already long existed before the Alter unit did.
With very few exceptions, all of the Alters we have gotten on Arknights actually have a reason to exist that was mentioned or at least hinted at long before their debut... Which makes those who did came out of the blue stick out all the more like a sore thumb.
To prove my point, I'm gonna list every Alter on the game so far with the exception of one, including the newly announced Executor Alter, and I'm gonna give a short summary of the lore that had been established for their existence prior to their actual release:

Out of all these Alters, only Chalter was truly gratuitous in that she is only Ch'en with a modified water gun, nothing leading up to her existing prior to Dossoles Holiday. Other than her, only Greyy Alter and maybe Skalter could be criticized for coming out of nowhere, and even then they still have a decent enough reason to exist, with Skadi having already had a whole event and pre-existing lore prior to Under Tides, her Alter, and the whole Bad Ending stuff that came with it that would eventually lead to IS3.
...Oh yeah, there's also Yato and Noir Corne randomly getting Alters as part of the Monster Hunter collab, but other than my personal take on it and how I really hope Collab Alters won't be a recurring thing... It is just a collab, what did you expect? And even then, it could be argued that it makes sense for those Operators in particular to have been given the Alters, as they are both said to be experienced and reliable ops in their lore, but are held back from fully being that in-game because of their 2 star rarity.
My point is that, so far, almost all Alters had some lore reason to be that I could agree with.
And then... Silence Alter was announced.

Silence the Paradigmatic: One step forward, two steps back

When I first saw the Lonetrail trailer and saw Silence Alter, I was hyped. Silence was getting an Alter, and not only that, she was gonna be welfare? Could this be a sign that HG is finally gonna leave the trend of Limited Alters behind? My happiness was unmeasurable.
But then, after my excitement died down and I started to think, I realized something...
Go and read all the current Rhine Labs lore Including the manga. Including OG Silence's files, especially OG Silence's files.
Now, let me ask you a question: Did Olivia Silence, as a character, needed an Alter?
Was there anything on her files, or in the manga, or on some module or an Operator Record, that said anything about her character that would require her to be stronger in-game that she already was? Or something that would need to have her change her whole in-game class or kit?
Because, and this is just in my honest, humble opinion: No. No there was not.
Silence was not some kid or teenager like Greyy or the Reserve A1 squad. She wasn't holding back any "true power" cliché nor was she currently anything other than what she was in the past, like Gavial or Nearl. Silence was just Silence: A woman, a mother, a medic.
That's not to say that Olivia Silence didn't had room to grow as a character, I for one was very hopeful for a Rhine Labs event to touch on her strained relationship with Saria once again and I'm happy that Lonetrail seems to have gone there. But unlike, say, Texas or Reed, none of the character growth that was ever hinted at with Silence seemed to have anything to do with the possibility of an Alter. There was nothing on her files or she as a character that screamed "I need an Alter".
Olivia Silence and her whole character arc didn't need her to have a sudden 6 star Alter, just as she didn't need a 6 star Alter when she left Rhine Labs in her backstory, nor after the "present day" sideplot in the manga. Just like she didn't need one in Dorothy's Vision. There was nothing, no plot or event or sequel to the manga or whatever, that wouldn't had made sense with Silence just remaining her 5-stars Medic self.
Her class, her kit, heck arguably even her rarity made sense with her lore.
But now, she's an Abjurer supporter because... she went to space? That at its core it's not that much better than Chalter existing because Ch'en went to Dossoles and Tequila sold her a water gun there...
Okay, that was just me taking the piss, but still... Look, I'm sure Lonetrail is gonna be great and that I'm gonna love reading it once it comes to Global, and might give a good explanation as to why Silence Alter exists, but that still leaves this Alter with a flaw that, as I have exposed earlier, few of the Alters in this game actually had: There was little to no reason for this Alter to exist prior to the event it came out with. Whatever lore reason Lonetrail gives, it will be a self-sustained one because the Alter is already there.
You could argue than the pre-existing lore here is Silence's already established desire of curing Oripathy. But if that alone was the case, then a lot of other Operators at Rhodes Island should also get an Alter, starting with Sussurro. That alone doesn't feel like enough of a reason for an Alter.

Character growth equals... Alter?

And that's when it hit me: I was not angry or disappointed that Silence was given an Alter with zero build-up to it.
I'm disappointed and a little salty because HG took a character arc I was patiently waiting for and then shoved up a good but still unnecessary Alter into it as if Alters were now obligatory, limited unit or not.
As if a low-rarity character can't have character growth or their own story arc without relying on an Alter. As if HG isn't confident enough on their own event stories without a shiny new Alter unit to help them promote them.
I like this game, and I love its characters, but I don't want to have to expect an Alter out of my favorite character just because I want them to finally appear on their own plotline. I don't want Andreana to finally appear on the next Abyssal Hunter event but as a weird Alter version of herself with the white hair and red eyes of the other Hunters like some people on this subreddit have suggested, not when Andreana's whole deal on her files is that she is her own thing: A gun-loving but normal woman who just happened to have been experimented on in the past, and giving her a more abyssal appearance or changing her class would erase that. I don't want Thorns to suddenly have a completely unnecessary Geek or Medic Alter just because I want him to have his own sidestory and have his past explored. Cuora finally regaining her memories... Okay, I guess an Alter wouldn't be so out of place there, but you surely get my point by now, do you?
You don't need Alters to tell a good story, and Alters shouldn't have to be equivalent to character growth.
"But that's just how gachas work!" Maybe. But that doesn't mean I have to like it.

That's all. Thanks for reading my nonsense if you reached this far, thank you.

I used to be able to copy and paste my previous posts and just remove the ones I've sold. Now it bunches everything up and the bulletpoints no longer function. I had to bring an older version into a word proccessor. Just werid and frustrating.

2023.06.02 23:28 Drakolf TftM- Love Rubs and Cuddles

Grahim was having the worst day of his life.
While this hyperbolic statement was likely entirely untrue, in the moment, the Canician was in the worst mood he'd been in for a long time, and had a very short temper as a result. His proposal at the Galactic Council had been rejected before he could properly get it off the floor- stupid Silarians and their flashy and impractical solutions to literally anything- and his lunch had been outright stolen from him by a Rakat who claimed he was the one trying to steal the food- and during the brief time that Grahim had brought up his receipts and proved that he was the one who bought it, the Rakat had absconded with the food, and the security force simply told him they would try to find the culprit, without offering any form of recompense.
The Hedron was widely known for its automatic sliding doors, none of which Grahim would slam shut to vent his anger. He was tired, hungry, and the last thing he wanted to do was lash out at anyone who didn't deserve it.
Like David.
Before he could beeline for his room, David was already approaching, arms wrapped around his abdomen and face buried in his fur.
"Not now." Grahim growled. It was instinctual, unintentional. It always hurt him when he growled at David, the Human was trying his best.
"Rough day, Grrhaf?" David asked. His pronunciation of the Caniti word was rough, but understandable. Though there wasn't a direct translation that worked- the best approximation was the sweet meats of herbivorous prey bathed in fresh blood from an equally fresh kill- Humans opted to translate it as 'sweetie' or 'honey', as it conveyed the same linguistic function as a term of endearment.
"If we were on Caniti Grrau, there would be several dead men today." Grahim growled. His stomach growled as if in agreement.
"Well, it'll please you to know that I've made dinner. We're having meatloaf with gravy, sausages, and those little cocktail weenies you like so much in your favorite sauce." David replied. Grahim's tail wagged at just the sound of the meal, let alone the scent that was beginning to waft his way.
There was no hesitation, dinner was served and eaten- Grahim noted David eating a salad along with his food, the plant matter not only digestible by his more omnivorous companion, but also enjoyed with the same sauce used with the cocktail weenies. Even when eating prey food, David liked to drench it in meat juices.
It was after dinner that the two went into their recreation room and sat down, David surprised Grahim by pulling him to a laying position. "Grrhaf, why have you done this?" Grahim asked.
"Shh, you've had a rough day. Lay your head on my lap." David replied firmly.
Grahim didn't argue, he rested his head on his companion's lap as they browsed the Hedron's television network for something they both could enjoy- or, that would be the normal course of action, yet David went directly toward Canician channels.
"David, you hate Canician broadcasts." Grahim remarked.
"And you don't." David replied. Then he did something with his fingers, Grahim at first didn't understand what it was, only that it was pleasant, almost intoxicating. David's fingers gently snaked through the fur around his ears, lightly scratching in an almost obscene way, and then David's other hand gently rubbed along Grahim's belly.
The Canician normally hated having anyone touch his belly, it was soft and vulnerable. Yet, David's blunt nails were no danger, his largely flat teeth- while capable of tearing flesh- were so blunt that they were no danger. Grahim felt... vulnerable, but he didn't feel in danger. He nuzzled David's hand almost involuntarily, and those blunt nails gently scraped against the sensitive area around his neck.
The growl that left his lips wasn't one of warning or threat, but of surprised contentment, and as the television began broadcasting Canician bloodsports, Grahim realized that maybe this was actually the best day ever in disguise.

2023.06.02 23:21 samtheman0105 Truly Human chapter 14

Well, hey friends, sorry for the delay... again. I wish I could write faster, but I think chapters will come out every 1-2 weeks for the foreseeable future. Anyway, on to the chapter!

first/
—————————————————————
Memory transcript subject: Mikhail Rykov, Human Liberation Front, Eastern American cell
Standardized human time: January 10th, 2057
After the reinforcements were briefed, our force of 65 strong left and headed towards the base, leaving behind only a skeleton crew to keep the outpost running. Just as the commanders promised, I was going to be leading the team going into the building itself to rescue my friends.
“God be with me…” I muttered to myself, closing my eyes as I clutched the small cross my grandmother had given me before my first mission as a token of good luck. It felt like so long ago now, I’d have to pay her a visit once we’re done. I had no doubt that my comrades would need medical attention, so we would likely be taking them deep into the wilderness to one of our larger permanent bases. I’d see if I could get a letter out to her, or get a secure radio signal that would reach Kamchatka.
“You still pray, huh?” One of the women in the back of the truck, who I recognized as part of Borowski’s reinforcements, said after I put the cross back in my pocket. Catherine I believe was her name. “I keep what little we still have of our ancestors' culture alive” I said while making sure my rifle was ready for the fight. My old, wooden stock, bolt action hunting rifle. It would do.
“Good, I think we’ll need a god's help” she said, checking her rifle as well. “We’re coming up on it now.”
“Then let’s prepare for a fight. Everyone!” I yelled as I stood up, facing the rest of my team in the cramped vehicle. “You know what they’re likely doing to our comrades! You know what they will do to us should they find out where we hide! Let all of your righteous rage at what they’ve done to our beautiful planet and cultures boil over! Let it guide your bullets towards the skulls of those Federation bastards! For the true humanity!”
I smiled as I was met with a chorus of our rallying cry said back to me, with a few cheers thrown in. It felt good, finally being able to do something. Finally being able to rescue them from whatever hell they were going through.
“Rykov, Borowski, get ready, T minus ten seconds” Carlson's voice said over the radio. I crossed myself one final time before grabbing onto a handle on the ceiling, steadying myself as we went off road. Carlson began counting down as we got closer.
“Five.”
Deep breath
“Four”
They’ll pay for what they’ve done
“Three”
My team will be ok
“Two”
Every Fed killed is a step closer to our freedom
“One!”
As Carlson finished the count down, I felt our vehicle crash through an armored wall. I could hear sirens blaring from inside the building as I pushed open the back doors, and hopped out of the truck with my team close behind me. “Bury them in lead! Leave no survivors!” I yelled as I fired at a fleeing Gojid, nailing the spiky bastard in the back of the head. It slumped to the ground, and I pulled the bolt back on my rifle before advancing forward, my team and I putting down the little disorganized resistance we faced with ease.
“This way! Come on!” I yelled, motioning for my men to follow me. I slid into cover, Catherine sliding in beside me, and looked over to see a door open. Perfect. “Right there! Light it up!” I said to her, raising my rifle and firing into the doorway. She fired as well, and we managed to take down three of the approaching reinforcements before we were forced into cover again.
“Hey Rykov” she said with a smile, reaching onto her belt and pulling out a grenade. “Would you like to do the honors?”
“I’d love to.” I said with a smile, taking it from her and pulling the pin. I threw it right in the middle of the group of federation soldiers, standing up and firing at any survivors as soon as I heard the explosion. I saw several attempting to crawl away, who I quickly put down with quick headshots. I wouldn’t have minded carrying out their deaths a bit longer, but I needed to be efficient.
Maybe I’ll bring one in alive, find out what a krakotl tastes like
As I looked back at the doorway, I saw a familiar face scrambling to his feet nearby. The officer from the road, the one that shot Miles. I watched as he shot one of my men in the neck before slipping into cover. When I looked around, I saw several bodies, both ours and federation. It was a sad truth that people died fighting for freedom they’ll never see, but I knew that when I chose to fight. I knew that when organizing this mission. There would be time to mourn later.
“Give me another grenade, now!” I said to Catherine, who quickly handed it over. I pulled the pin and threw it towards the officer's cover. I saw him fly backwards and hit the ground, which took care of almost all of the enemies outside.
“Now, move! Forward!” I yelled to my team as I rushed towards the door. I stopped to make sure everybody got inside before joining them, but as I was walking through the doorway a bullet hit the wall next to me.
I turned around to see the officer, blood running down his leg as he staggered towards me with his pistol aimed. As tempting as it was to beat him to death against the wall, I refrained.
Efficient, I need to be efficient.
Instead, I fired a shot at him, hitting him in the chest before pulling back the bolt and firing again into the same spot. He fell backwards onto the ground, finally out of the fight.
Hope that killed him, I thought as I advanced inside with my remaining team. Borowski and his group should be distracting them outside, while we push in towards the cells. Immediately, we were met with a firefight, forcing us into the little cover we could find behind corners and walls. A few of my team dipped into side rooms along with the techies, clearing them of anyone, even scientists and non combatants as they rushed towards the computers, nabbing whatever intel they could. The scientists were the chief architects of our cultural genocide, they deserved no more mercy then the soldiers who forced the cure down our throats.
“This way!” I yelled after we managed to clear the hallway, thanks to some of the team bringing along makeshift firebombs that we liked to call Greek fire, after the legendary weapon used by the Byzantine Empire back when we had a history. I doubt the cured had ever heard of Rome or Byzantium.
We hurried through the building, carefully rounding corners and picking off any enemies that came our way. We lost some of our own, of course, but we still had enough of a force to finish the rescue. Finally, we found them. I could see what looked like cells down the hall, guarded by a smaller force than I anticipated. We easily dispatched of them, and my heart began to race as I sprinted towards the glass doors.
What I saw in the first door drove me into a rage. Jacob was there, a large collar around his neck and a bloody bandage around the stump where his right hand once was. Blood was running down his face from his eye, and his mouth was scarred. He was being held up, one of the cured human guards using him as a shield while a Zurulian doctor coward behind them.
“St- stay back!” The guard said, aiming his pistol at me. He was clearly terrified at the sight of me and the remaining seven team members gathering behind me. “Go get the others” I said without looking away from the guard. He began to panic as I shot the lock on the door and began to approach, clutching my rifle until my knuckles were white. My team ran off, hopefully to enact the same vengeance on whatever federation monsters they find.
“Mikhail… I… I knew you’d come…” Jacob said weakly, forcing a smile, which let me see that he was missing a tooth as well. My rage finally boiled over. I lunged forward and grabbed the monster’s hand, tossing his pistol away from him before he could react. Jacob fell forward as I dragged the guard to the ground and began beating him. Over, and over, and over. No matter how much he cried, no matter how much he begged for mercy, I no longer possessed any. I beat it till it stopped making a sound, then stomped on its head until there wasn’t much left but a mess of red blood where a face used to be. The scientist had attempted to run while I was distracted, but even in his injured state, Jacob was still quick. He picked up the guard's pistol, and was keeping the terrified zurulian held at gunpoint.
When I finally got up, my hands bloody and my breath ragged, I approached him. He winced as I put a hand on his shoulder, but gave me another weak smile. “It's… good to see you again… how’d you find us?”
“A story for another day” I said, turning my eyes back to the scientist. “He’s all yours, do what you want with him.” Jacobs' bloody smile grew wider as he approached the cowering marsupial, who only attempted to run again. Jacob promptly shot it in the leg, sending it to the ground with a pained yelp.
“You fuckers put us through so much…” He said as he slowly approached, likely relishing the fear in its eyes as much as I was. The thing whimpered as he knelt down next to it, placing the barrel of the sidearm right up to the doctor's stomach. “Took my hand, took my eye, mangled my mouth, MADE ME EAT YOUR CURE!” He yelled, getting inches away from the shaking doctor. The part about the cure made my heart drop. After all we’d been through, after all we’d fought for, the federation had turned him into one of them. They’d probably turned everybody into one of them.
“Destroying who we were wasn’t enough three hundred years ago, was it?” He said, moving the pistol to one of the doctor's other knees before firing again, point blank. It cried in pain and began to whimper as Jacob got right up in its face again. “I will burn the federation to the ground… there’s nowhere you, or your species, or your entire fucking federation will be safe!” With that, he fired a shot into its gut, and left it to bleed out in agony. I went with him out of the cell, half carrying him as he leaned on me for support. The others had been rescued too, and thankfully were in better shape then Jacob. Miles had bandages around his chest and leg, but was otherwise ok. Alexandra was limping along with the help of one of the rescuers, while Emily looked completely unscathed other than a couple bruises and cuts.
“Get those collars off, now!” I said as I grabbed the pistol from Jacobs hand, firing a shot up through the large device and into the ceiling. I managed to pull it away, revealing burns from constant shocks. “Those fuckers… come on, lets go!” I began helping Jacob towards the exit while the others followed behind me. Emily fell in beside me, having grabbed a rifle from a corpse. “I can't believe what they’ve done to him, I knew it would be bad, but…” she said, taking a few steps ahead along with another partisan to make sure we would be clear to help the injured to the vehicles.
“I’m… glad to see I got it the worst…” Jacob said as we limped down the hall. “Don’t worry brother, we’ll be safe soon.” I said to him.
The techies joined us as we approached the exit, falling in behind Emily. “Find anything?” I said to them as the doorway came into sight. “Let's just say command will like what we have, this could change everything” one of them said with a smile. I recognized him as Ilich, the guard that had helped me into the cave and given me water when I first arrived at Carlson’s outpost.
“Yeah… you won’t believe why we were taken alive…” Jacob said as we made our way outside. To my dismay, the body of the officer with the glasses who I’d shot was gone, meaning he’d survived and managed to scurry away. A blood trail led around the side of the building, but I didn’t have time to chase him. Not right now.
“Tell me on the ride back” I said, calling for a medship. “Commander Carlson, Commander Borowski, we’ve got them! It's time to pull out!” I yelled into my comms as I helped Jacob onto a small dropship that had just landed outside the destroyed outer wall, one that had been converted into a medical vessel. I made sure everybody else was loaded onto ships before finally climbing into one myself. This surprise attack had gone spectacularly well. Borowski and his group had kept them completely distracted, letting us get in and out with my comrades without much resistance.
I finally began to relax as the ships lifted off with everyone inside. Carlson and Borowski would conduct a fighting retreat, and meet us back at the outpost later. Just as I let out a deep sigh, I saw Miles limping towards me. I barely had time to turn towards him before I felt his fist collide with my nose.
I stumbled backwards, wiping blood away as I stared back at the furious kid. “You left me!” He yelled, drawing the attention of anyone who wasn’t already watching this spectacle. “You ran! You left me, left us, and now look at Jacob!” He said, motioning to our mutilated friend currently being treated by a medic.
“And then I rescued you…” I said quietly, letting out a quiet sigh before I continued. “I didn’t want to run, but if I didn’t I would have been in those cells with you, and nobody would have made it out of that hell… I’d just be stuck with you.”
“Y- You… you…” Miles stammered, tears welling up in his eyes. He was clearly too angry to get any words out before he turned away and sat down, letting a medic tend to him as he glared at me.
“Here.” I heard Ilich say as I sat back down. I looked over to see him holding out a piece of cloth for me to try and stop the bleeding in my nose, at the very least wipe it off.
“Thanks…” I grumbled, taking the cloth and quickly staining it red. “So what did you find on their servers?” I asked him, turning to face the techie. A wide smile grew across his face as I asked, a smile wider and more genuine than any I’d seen in a long time. “Well… we aren’t alone, there’s another predator species. They call themselves the Arxur.”

2023.06.02 23:17 The_Alloquist [A Lord of Death] - Chapter 54 (Aya)

[←Chapter 53] [Cover Art] [My Links] [Index] [Discord] [Subreddit] [Chapter 55→]
The day had slid by Aya like so much water off of a duck’s back. It took a particularly hard prod by Frare to dislodge her from a slurry of inattentiveness. As she looked around she realised the barricades had been almost completely disassembled, with only scraps remaining on the church floor. The pieces of broken glass and masonry were being carted outside by the villagers that remained.
Currently there was a lukewarm debate around the command table, dragged to the centre of the hall. Aya’s consciousness glossed over Sorore reprimanding her brother for bothering her, as well as the various arguments over logistics and provisions. She half-heartedly listened to discussions of various threats on various roads, and then quickly forgot about it.
Without really realising it, she found herself peaking at the parchments spread over the table. The lined scrolls held no real meaning for her, but the centre map with its pins certainly did. It was a large and fairly extensive map of the continent, with various cities illustrated with flowing script too elaborate for her to read. Slowly her eyes flitted from north to south, and found the curl of a mountain range bleeding into a peninsula where she assumed Karkos was.
“What about here?” she said, pointing to the location through the greaves of the captains before her.
Most turned to look with amused confusion, and she quickly felt a flush creeping up her neck.
“It’s a city,” she said.
The officers continued to look at her, awaiting elaboration.
“Y-you could get food there,” she offered weekly.
She almost added ‘I’ve heard the food is quite good’, though fortunately for her dignity the phrase died on her lips before it could enter the world. Naia, almost directly across from her, looked down and stroked his beard.
“It’s far from the worst option,” he said, “in fact, it’s probably one of the better ones.”
“It charges an arm and a leg, just for the usage of one ship. The cost of transporting all of us will be steep,” one soldier protested.
“The mountains are blocked off with the Alonshaze destroyed. None of the other passes can be reliably quickly traversed, even in summer,” Naia countered, “going the land route right now would be asking for trouble. The flatlands at the base of the Alonshaze have always been unstable, but ever since Ein’elen broke up it-”
“Sharaloch would be another option,” spoke up Damafelce, without much enthusiasm.
“You want to bet on a city of pirates and mercenaries for transport?” exclaimed another captain.
“Unwise, especially with such valuable persons,” Naia said, “we’ve already had enough headaches. The last thing I need is a hostage situation while sailing the strait.”
“You get what you pay for in Karkos,” yet another captain offered, with general murmurs of assent, “though with what gold we have I-”
“The gold’s not the issue,” said Naia, “if necessary, we can issue bonds in the name of Angorrah, or the paladins can in the name of the church.”
Niche, glum and surly, still nodded at the implied question.
“The general would not be happy. You know how possessive they get over money on a mission,” said Damafelce.
“We’ve been attacked multiple times, crossed half the continent, and found a long lost bequeathed, all with about a hundred men,” snorted Naia, “with all due respect to my betters, they can take their complaints and shove them-”
“If we’re going by speed and stability, Karkos is the best way,” cut in Niche through the laughter of the soldiers, “the safety of the Bequeathed should be our top priority. A good ship will get us there in under a week.”
“A ship to Espala, then Inalthia. Draskar forest is a nightmare at any time of the year,” Naia said, leaning over the map. With a subtle motion, he moved Aya’s finger northwest, and she realised with horror that she’d been pointing to the wrong end of the peninsula where some lesser settlement stood.
“Captain Deckard, I assume those that don’t want to come for pilgrimage will be returning to the fort?” he continued without giving any sign that she’d done anything wrong.
A new man, eyes blazing underneath furry dark brows nodded fervently.
“Well, I suppose we’ll have to clear out. I want everyone ready by sunset - it’ll be just under a week before we reach Karkos. Get what sleep you can - we’ll be riding out the next morning.”
There were a few finer points of debate that were bandied back and forth, but the conversation largely seemed to be settled. Niche and Damafelce both seemed to be locked in a staring match as Naia approached her.
“A good suggestion, my lady,” he said, “it’s been a long time since I’ve been in the city, but it might be just the place after this string of close calls.”
Aya tried to take what credit she could with a burning face.
“Now, there’s one other piece of business I have to attend to, I think,” he said, “where is the mage?”
“He’s on the roof,” she blurted, “I can show you.”
“No,” he said, holding up a gauntlet, “I think we’ll be just fine by ourselves. You should go and rest. It’s been a long night.”
He and Damafelce walked away from the table and vanished through the side door. Aya returned back to the altar with Niche, who was muttering some unkind things under his breath. It wasn’t more than a half hour before Naia returned with his captain, looking troubled. Before she could ask any questions, however, he quickly exited through the front of the church.
The rest of the day was largely spent on routines of amusement, the Bequeathed and the children of the village playing little games and telling stories among each other. The paladins, though they kept an eagle eye upon their charges, were not in a talkative mood that day. Lillian’s face was particularly dark, and she often muttered things that no one cared to listen to.
When evening came, any residual fears of the monsters returning were put to rest. The icy fear was no more, the villagers placed back what intact pews there were, and the flow of people from the medical bay slowed to a trickle. A simple meal, and a dreamless sleep, and Aya awoke in the early hours of the morning. Pulling herself up to one of the broken windows, she could see the summer green of the trees, their vibrancy somewhat damped by a light blue-grey fog.
Before they left, a service was held to bury those who’d been slain. The dead were laid side by side, wrapped in simple drab cloth, in a large pit just outside the doors of the church. Niche stood over the graves, eyes shut, pronouncings the blessing and peace that these brave defenders would lie with. Aya took the time to say a silent thanks as she gazed at the cloth-bound bodies.
As the remains were covered with soil, Niche shifted into a louder, older language as he sang in a husky tenor. Some kind of funeral liturgy, she guessed, though it was unfamiliar to her. The villagers cast tears into the ground with clouds of earth as they passed along the pit, then they left for the wall and the village beyond.
Aya’s concerns as she reentered the church shifted to more material things - hunger, cold, the lack of bathing over the last few days. At least some of those needs were addressed by the paladins in the next hours, with furs and food. But soon enough, they were on horses, walking in a line down to the south over open fields before the forest.
The first morning passed with very little conversation between anyone as they passed underneath the trees. That was all the better for Aya, who found herself enjoying the crisp air and the rapidly warming sunlight. It did take a bit of a turn for sorrow when she remembered that she often swam with her mother on mornings like these in the mountain lakes. Still, she was determined to extract what happiness she could on such a wretched journey. It was a resiliency that Frare seemed to share, while his sister still glanced nervously at the trees around them. Aya wondered if the girl was still seeing the creatures from last night in every shadow.
When they reached a clearing around midday, the children were made to sit before Niche as he handed out various meagre components of meals. As they began to eat, Lillian joined him, and both cleared their throats in unison.
“Right,” Niche began, “I realise the last few days have been less than smooth. Hardly a time for lessons, unfortunately.”
His dry chuckle was not reciprocated by any of the listeners, so he quickly moved on.
“But, given the nature of what happened, I think it’s advisable to speak on magic and mages, and what the scripture says about them.”
Frare, at the word ‘scripture’ audible groaned, which was followed by a hiss as his sister seized his ear.
“We have been forced into a position where we needed the help of a mage,” Niche said, picking his words with care, “it was not something we did willingly. It wasn’t a choice, but rather the product of circumstances beyond our control.”
You mean, the commander overruled you, thought Aya, though she elected not to voice such thoughts.
“If we had another choice,” Lillian chimed in, “we would’ve taken it. Survival, however, takes precedence, especially for you three. The choices were made, we might not be proud of it, but we’re all still here and that’s what matters.”
“That being said,” Niche said, fumbling in the interior of his breastplate and withdrawing a small booklet, “it would be good for you to understand what exactly underlies our choices.”
Aya’s eyes flicked over to the twins - Sorore was sitting upright and attentive, while her brother was a glum and slumped mirror. Niche thumbed through a few pages, focused in on the one he’d selected and once more, cleared his throat.
“And thus it was found, a great conspiracy, conspired against the children of Angorrah, conspired with creatures both great and small, but terrible all, in darkness and stagnant pools, where the profundity of their sin would go unnoticed by the decent and pious. Hated and proclaimed sinner, traitor, rebel against the Lost themselves. Three Boons would be taken, and three Houses be condemned to dust.”
Sorore perked up, for she clearly already knew the story and was excited to hear it yet again. Aya waited with a tempered anticipation, hoping at least there would be a half-way interesting tale, despite its lacklustre delivery. The story progressed into a broad parable, describing how three houses arose in rebellion against the church, and how three holy items had been robbed from the sepulchre of the ‘roiling cathedral’.
Apparently, they were ferried into the hands of mages, who perverted their holy functions until they burned the most sacred tree on the continent, one laid by Nafthtazia herself. For all of Aya’s doubts about the moral, she couldn’t deny the enjoyment of a good piece of history.
“Magic exists beyond the purview of the church,” Niche began, then quickly corrected his error, “rather, it is a part of the mystery of the Lost, but others can access in inappropriate ways. Some speculate that it should be left entirely to the Lost, not handled by mortal hands. Regardless, the church has taken upon a sacred duty, to ensure that what magic is used is done so sparingly, and with the utmost care.”
He closed the book with a flourish, clearly pleased at the depth of his instruction. Frare’s eyes were fluttering, which prompted a painful poke from his sister.
“So, magic is evil?” said Aya, trying to square that conclusion with all she’d seen.
Niche puffed out his chest, no doubt about to exclaim that it was in the strongest possible terms. Lillian however, had her own thoughts to add before he could.
“Not… inherently,” she said, “But it is broadly forbidden and for good reason. It is less evil, rather a great risk for evil. That is, far too easy to put it towards evil ends. That’s why mages are, as a rule, cruel, selfish, and dangerous creatures. Perhaps it is better put that magic attracts evil, even if it can be used for good.”
Aya stewed in that statement for a while - clearly the church was deeply knowledgeable, expanding and attending to her own, meagre education on the matter from the local priest. Still there were holes, obvious holes, or so she told herself.
“It might be hard to understand,” Niche said, “it might seem a little strange that the church forbids something that could be so useful. There are very good reasons both in scripture and in history that proves the point - magic is not to be used with abandon, and thus must remain under the Church’s eye.”
He patted the sigil of the church, engraved on his breastplate.
“That is one reason why the Light Lords were created in the first place,” he said, with thinly veiled pride, “we are the watchers, investigating the use of magic and capturing the perpetrator that would harm or cheat with it.”
“It was a decision made long ago,” added Lillian, “it was a sort of… half-agreement between the church and the army. We kept the peace that was broken by the mages during the Night of the Burning Tree.”
“So there are mages in Angorrah?” said Aya, drawing a strange, near insulted look by Sorore at the question.
“Well…” said Lillian, sharing a look with Niche, “a handful at most, who operate under the strictest scrutiny.”
Sorore’s face twisted at this, but whatever comment she would’ve liked to make stayed in her head.
“The point is that mages are faithless and concerned for themselves above all else. They are to be engaged on only the most necessary basis. They may be directed towards good in service to the church, but never on their own.”
The rest of the lesson served as constant reinforcements and examples of the danger of mages. There were one or two arguments between Frare and their teachers that Sorore was too slow to suppress. Before long they were off again, the leaves shaking above them as a wind blew from the south. The evening camp mercifully spared them another lecture and after a simple dinner, both twins made their excuses and retired.
Aya huddled beside the fire as the temperature dropped. Around them were a circle of waggons, some covered by a framework of canvas, others bare, all loaded with supplies. The gifts of the grateful villagers, granted to the commander who had saved them.
The paladins were busy doing maintenance, carefully laying out arms and armour, scrubbing, polishing and sharpening. Aya got up, murmured a good night to the paladins, who nodded curtly. They were so absorbed that they didn’t seem to notice Aya slipping away.
She poked her head into one of the ‘empty’ waggons, scanning the darkness for any sign of movement. Save for a handful of small crates, there lay the crumpled form of the mage just as they’d loaded him. Aya felt her breath still as she looked at Inniaylsia’s amber eyes. Even from this distance, she could see the subtle inner flames of reds and yellows softly illuminating them.
“Yes?” came the voice of the older woman, curt and snappish.
Aya started to speak, then stopped, realising that she had no real reason to be here, at least not one that she’d thought out.
“Come out with it child,” came the voice again.
Aya was put in mind of a line of children, heads bowed before a grandmother picking detritus from their scalps.
“I- I-” she said, “I was wondering if…”
“No. There’s been no change in this old bag of bones,” said Innie, her voice softening slightly, “though I’m sure he would appreciate your concern.”
Aya stood there for a moment, awkwardness rising, before setting her jaw, looking behind her, and upon seeing the paladin’s backs, clambered in as quietly as possible. The cat sat attentively and silently, regarding the young girl before her. Aya began in a hushed whisper, talking about the Night of the Burning Tree and the lessons of the paladins from the morning.
“If you want to ask a question about history,” interrupted the cat, “you best ask this sod when he wakes up. He proves irritatingly well-versed on that. Considering his age, he might've lived through it.”
“I thought you were old as well,” Aya said, trying to remember where she got the notion from.
“I am. Older than him. Old as half the company put together,” she said, “but I rarely venture outside of the forest. This is the furthest south I have been in decades, perhaps a century or two.”
Aya paused to try and get a grasp on the scale of time the creature had just casually gestured at.
“So my dear, if you’re going to ask me about the great deeds of men or the history of cities, I’m afraid you’re out of luck,” said the cat, tail bobbing this way and that.
“But that’s not exactly what I…” said Aya, taking a deep breath before continuing, “I wanted to ask about magic.”
The cat cocked its head, the speed of the tail picking up.
“What about magic, child?” she said.
Swish-swish.
“Well, I was wondering, just for a start, what is it?” Aya said.
“You should sit down,” said the cat, “this might take a while.”

2023.06.02 22:48 byendurance Seven years sober. From jail, to endurance sports, to a completely new life

I wrote a longish memoir of my journey to sobriety. It goes like this:
Midway through my life’s journey, I saw the lights of a police car in my rearview mirror. In a blackout, only snapshots come back to you, providing subtle hints of a night gone sideways. Usually these memories are of the worst scenes of the night. Once the mind has already checked out, certain still-shot images still register in the wetware.
I managed to get to the side of the road and go through a proper arrest. I recall refusing the sobriety test not because I wanted to contest the policeman’s assessment in court, but because I could barely stand up. I had been driving 35 miles-per-hour on a 65 mile-per-hour highway, at 4 AM, with no shirt and no shoes
The mistake of that day had been made many hours prior to the sirens, when someone offered me a shot of liquor. I stayed strong and said no. Actually, I only said no once, then I gladly took the shot, and then another, and another. I liked claiming that “If I just stick to beer” nothing could go wrong. Light beer keeps the madness away, I believed, since you can’t drink it fast enough to get really stupid. This is not actually true, but it lengthens the process of getting wasted. That I even needed to consider this possibility speaks for itself. This propensity I considered a normal feature of people, fortifying my bias with a remembered passage from the novel Winesburg, Ohio about the men from the country coming to town for a rowdy night:
Under the influence of drink the naturally strong lusts of their natures, kept suppressed by the heroic labor of breaking up new ground, were released. A kind of crude and animal-like poetic fervor took possession of them. On the road home they stood up on the wagon seats and shouted at the stars. Sometimes they fought long and bitterly and at other times they broke forth into songs.
To drink was to relax and let loose, and let go of the frustrations and struggles of the day or week. I suspect that is true for many people. But there’s a problem in this notion for some of us that like to shout at the stars.

(For the rest, it begins at this link. The best seven years of my life have been these sober years.)

Providence, RI, US: Found in river-adjacent woods. Size of a volleyball.
About 26"/65 cm off of a path in a woodsy, natural conservation area that is mostly oak, beech and black birch trees. This is up a hill overlooking a brackish river. It's been pretty dry here with only a light rainfall overnight a week ago. Temps are mid-40s-mid-50s F overnight and 60s/70s F daytime. I'm sorry, I'm not sure what is relevant or not. Unfortunately, I did not touch it or sniff it.
It's really neato!! Does anyone know what it is? Thank you!

2023.06.02 22:24 tranquil45 Looking for someone to talk to (UK)

I'm posting this on behalf of someone I know, who is looking for someone to talk to. The Stroke Association is trying to connect him to a volunteer, but there's an 8 week waitlist.
Male, 65, major stroke 4 weeks ago and had a successful thrombectomy.
Balance, speech and cognitively he's as before. Vision loss in one eye, and battling fatigue.
Married with two grown kids, a self employed professional.
If anyone would like to spend some time chatting on the phone, about anything, I can connect you.
Thanks so much in advance.
Having now witnessed a stroke up close, I wish you and your families lots of love and light. X

2023.06.02 22:01 pindasausmetballen Qua Patet Orbis, Part 14

A Nature of Predators fanfic, all credit goes to u/SpacePalladin15
Memory transcription subject: Sergeant Irons, Delta-4, United Nations Marine Corps
[Standardised Human Time] October 26th 2136 A.D.
Rescue Mission: Operation Retina, POW Rescue
The windows became tinted after the Arxur spoke and the other holding me down looked confused as the room started to fill with gas.
‘’what’s happening? What is this gas?’’ it said as he began coughing up blood.
‘’Chlorine, smart choice, won’t kill in most cases, it will blind and give you terrible irritations on your skin and in your throat.’’ I answered as I silently held my breath as much as possible.
Once the Arxur were starting to falter, I took my chance and knocked one in the stomach with my elbow, using the shock of my hit to grab its rifle and shoot the other Arxur in the neck, making crimson blood flow out of the artery inside, onto the enclosed catwalk, slowly dripping into the pen.
I quickly tried to pin the other Arxur down with little succes, the gas started burning in my eyes, even though we were trained for this, its still hurted as fuck.
Frederick responded to seeing me pinned down and grabbed the now bled out Arxurs pistol, placing two well fired shots into its head, making him go limp immediately.
The gas was still here as I started to hear Gojid choking below us. I signed at the large gate in the pen, worried that talking allowed more gas to enter our lungs and we both moved to the end of the catwalk, towards the control room.
As we entered the control room we were met with a familiar face, Trinsa, he had a worried but slightly happy look on his face, his ears perked up when he heard my voice, he seemed to have a cybernetic left eye, probably what the grays did to him.
Once the other humans saw we had escaped they flipped a switch on the control panel, allowing the now former cattle to escape, meeting another squad of special forces on the other side.
Now back on the ship, I told Trinsa what happened, after we were boarded, Trinsa’s lights went out and got separated by the Arxur boarding the ship, we managed to hold them of for a few minutes but eventually we ran dry and got captured, we lost delta 1 and delta 2 during the fighting, god bless those brave souls.
Captured by the Arxur wasn’t pleasant, they saw us as more then the ‘prey’, but less than them, they called us leaflickers, beating us, torturing us for fun, laughing while we were suffering, they took Fredericks FUCKING ARM JUST TO TASTE TEST THE NEW SPECIES!
Our saviors weren’t much better, they gassed 14 Gojid with asthma, or shortlung, as they called it, WHAT DID THEY FUCKING EXPECT, ME, A FULLY TRAINED SPECIAL OPERATIVE, BARELY GOT TROUGH THAT, WERE THEY TRYING TO FUCKING KILL THOSE?
Trinsa also looked sad, but I won’t blame him, his tail curled around his leg and his large tan ears flat against his head, there were only two of us now, Fred was in medical, getting his arm treated and probably getting sent back to earth for a prosthetic.
‘’so does that new eye of yours have built in night vision or IR?’’ I asked jokingly.
‘’yeah, funnily enough, it actually does, but it works with my mind, just like the translators do, I’m no technician but that thing is hooked up to my brain!’’ he replied, pointing towards his left eye socket.
‘’why are you so sad, i’ve never seen you like this, you’re always happy?’’ he asked, unknowingly he just dropped a bombshell of a question in my mind.
‘’w- we lost ONE BILLION PEOPLE, with the expectations to come across aliens that are better than us, surely we’ll be the worst we thought, BUT NO, HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT THEY DO TRINSA, THEY LOCK UP ANYONE WHO DOESN’T FOLLOW THE ‘HERD’, BURN ANYTHING THAT ACTS ‘PREDATORY’, the moment they saw us, they wanted to kill us, just because how we look, now that wasn’t an issue if we did something wrong, BUT THIS IS JUST PLAIN RACIST, THEY FUCKING BOMBED US THE MOMENT WE CAME ACROSS THEM!’’ I ranted, the news I heard broke me, all the time I had spent in that shithole, just to hear 1/10th of your population died, it was miserable.
Trinsa moved a bit back, giving me some space, and probably because i was yelling at him, but I needed to let it out, someone to hear it, someone to listen, halve my squad died back there.
I'm not done with those aliens yet, but first some refreshment before getting out in the field again.
‘’hey lets get something in the mess hall, i heard they had this new thing called… pat- how do you pronounce this?’’ he handed me his pad showing some yellow fries, mayo, curry and onions, ‘’yeah lets go get that, i would love me a patatje speciaal, we’ll get one for Fred too’’
First/Previous/Next?
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Note: Curry is not the curry from India or other countries, its a spicier Dutch ketchup, really good! Patatje means fries in Dutch and speciaal, special, shocking right, go google it its reeeaaally good!

2023.06.02 21:37 SharkLaserBoy2001 Tales of Venom Chapter 1

The market was bustling with action. Dragons stepped on each other’s talons and tails. Wings getting tangled with passersby trying to avoid the crowd. One dragonet watched the commotion from under a cart, where the owner was trying to grab any dragon’s attention to attempt to catch a sale. The dragonet’s eyes glazed across the crowd, for a chance to strike.
There!
A small coconut bounced around the ground, ricocheting from dragon to dragon. It rolled conveniently to a standstill in front of the cart, and just as the tiny dragon was about to pounce, a wandering merchant picked it up. The dragon inspected the coconut, rolling it a few times over in his claws before putting it into a side pouch wrapped around his upper forearm and walked away, to somewhere else in the plaza.
The dragonet stuck his head out from under the cart to try to catch a glimpse of the coconut stealing dragon, but he was nowhere to be seen in the waving sea of scales.
“Hmph! That was my coconut!” The dragonet grumbled quietly to himself. “The one chance I get all day…” he said as his voice trailed off as his stomach also grumbled for food. It was getting late, and if he got home after dark, Ma wouldn’t be happy. He let out a little sigh, and dashed out from under the cart. The cart owner didn’t notice him, nor acknowledge him being there if he did, as he was preoccupied with whatever he was trying to sell, which was a variety of fruits stacked on each other.
The dragonet dismissed the thought of stealing any fruit, as he didn’t have a taste for them and didn’t want the owner to notice. The walk home was boring as it ever was, but something caught his attention. A subtle noise came from a pile of crates half-covered in the darkening light, but when he got close, a shadow took off. He tried to see where it went, but now since it was dusk, everything casted a shadow. Whoever, or whatever was hiding, did not want to be found.
He didn’t give it a second thought, but the feeling of eyes on the back of his neck lingered. When he got home, he hurried inside, and was not a second too late. Just as the door closed, his mother stormed down the stairs leading to the front room where he stood.
“Rattle, yout late,” she inquired, her tone flaked with fury. But I’m not late, Rattle thought to himself, but knew it would be the wrong thing to say. “I’m sorry, Ma,” he whispered slightly, trying to make himself even smaller than normal. “Do not call me ‘Ma’ ever again,” she replied coldly, her getting louder with each word. “My name is Mamba,” she finished, at the point of almost yelling.
“Y-yes, Mamba,” Rattle squeaked. This is why he never wanted to upset mother. Anything he did she turned against him, even if it was in her favor to start with. “It’s time for dinner,” Mamba exclaimed as she headed for the kitchen, with fury in each step on the way. Rattle followed behind her, but was trying to keep as much distance between them.
Rattle sat himself down, and stared blankly down at the blood-red wooden table in front of him. Mamba laid a cooked vulture on the plate sitting on the other side of the table, directly opposite of Rattle, and then she took a brown-yellowish lizard out from one of her many pouches and dropped it on the wood in front of him. Mamba immediately started ravaging the vulture, ripping hunks off of it and swallowing them whole. Rattle just stared at the lizard gloomily, until Mamba was done picking the flesh off of the bones on the vulture.
“Eat,” she ordered Rattle. He looked up at Mamba, at her black scales trickling down her neck which reflected the light coming from the oil lamp, at her battle-worn face that radiated impatience and vengeance. Rattle looked down at the lizard, when he picked it up with 2 talons and ripped it in half with a single bite. He swallowed the first half, then the second.
That’s when the pain he knew would come started marching its way through his body. He clutched his stomach, and swallowed as he almost immediately threw up. “M-may I be e-excused,” he managed to get out. Mamba glared at him, her swirling black eyes boring into his. “M-Mamba,” he corrected himself. “Yes, you may go,” she said, her talons tapping the table in wave-like patterns.
Rattle wasted no time as he dashed out the kitchen’s back door and into the alleyway. The stars were out fully now, seemingly judging him from the sky above. Rattle clutched the side of a barrel that was the closest to him, and threw up whatever he managed to eat in the past two days into it. Rattle collapsed onto the steps leading to the back door, and tried to regain control over himself. The alleyway around him bobbed up and down in his vision, as the pain in his stomach did not want to go away. The many times this has happened does not make it feel any better.
Finally, after what seemed like hours, he felt able to move his own body and his head stopped spinning. He walked back inside the house, which was now pitch darkness. It did not matter though, as he knew his house by heart. After climbing the stairs and entering his room, he collapsed onto his bed, or what counted as one. Some rags and blankets piled into a corner is what accommodations he was given, along with a lonely 2 layered bookshelf which in itself shouldn’t be standing, given the state it is in.
Rattle immediately fell into sleep, the exhaustion overpowering any actions he tried to do, which at the moment he didn’t mind since all he wanted was sleep. But even in sleep, horrors had him in their cold grip. As he slept, unescapable nightmares swallowed him. The creatures and dragons haunting him in his sleep, with most of them being Mother, and another dragon who he has never seen before, but seemingly always stalks him in his sleep.

2023.06.02 21:20 InternetTraumatized New Martyr John the New of Sochi, who suffered at Belgrade (June 2)

(from oca.org)
The Holy Great Martyr John the New of Sochi, lived in the fourteenth century in the city of Trebizond. He was a merchant, devout and firm in his Orthodoxy, and generous to the poor.
Once, he happened to be sailing on a ship while pursuing his trading activities. The captain of the ship was not Orthodox, but got into an argument about the Faith with Saint John. Having been vanquished by the saint’s words, the captain resolved to make trouble for him when they got to Belgrade. During the ship’s stay at Belgrade, the captain went to the city ruler, a fire-worshipper, and suggested that on his ship was a studious man who also desired to become a fire-worshipper.
The city ruler invited Saint John to join the fire-worshippers and renounce his faith in Christ.
The saint prayed secretly, calling on the help of Him Who said, “When they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what you shall speak, neither do you premeditate; but whatsoever will be given you in that hour, speak that, for it is not you that speaks, but the Holy Spirit” (Mark 13:11). And the Lord gave him the courage and understanding to counter all the claims of the impious and firmly confess himself a Christian. After this, the saint was so fiercely beaten with rods that his entire body was lacerated, and the flesh came off in pieces. The holy martyr thanked God for being found worthy to shed his blood for Him and thereby wash away his sins.
Afterwards they put him in chains and dragged him away to prison. In the morning the city ruler ordered the saint brought forth again. The martyr came before him with a bright and cheerful face. The intrepid martyr absolutely refused to deny Christ, denouncing the governor as a tool of Satan. Then they beat him again with rods, so that all his insides were laid bare.
The gathering crowd could not bear this horrible spectacle and they began to shout angrily, denouncing the governor for tormenting a defenseless man. The governor, having the beating stopped, gave orders to tie the Great Martyr to the tail of a wild horse to drag him by the legs through the streets of the city. Residents of the Jewish quarter particularly scoffed at the martyr and threw stones at him. Finally, someone took a sword and cut off his head.
Saint John’s body with his severed head lay there until evening, and none of the Christians dared to take him away. By night a luminous pillar was seen over him, and a multitude of burning lamps. Three light-bearing men sang Psalms and censed the body of the saint. One of the Jews, thinking that these were Christians coming to take up the remains of the martyr, grabbed a bow and tried to shoot an arrow at them, but he was restrained by the invisible power of God, and became rigid.
In the morning the vision vanished, but the archer continued to stand motionless. Having told the gathering inhabitants of the city about the vision and what was done to him by the command of God, he was freed from his invisible bonds. Having learned about the occurrence, the ruler gave permission to bury the body of the martyr in the local church. This occurred between the years 1330 and 1340. There is some question about the year of the saint’s martyrdom. Saint Νikόdēmos of the Holy Mountain gives the year as 1642, while others say it was 1492.
The captain who had betrayed Saint John repented of his deed, and decided secretly to convey the relics to his own country, but the saint appeared in a dream to the priest of the church, and prevented this. After seventy years the relics were transferred to Sochi, the capital of the Moldo-Valachian principality, and placed in the cathedral church.
Troparion — Tone 3
Your holy martyr John, O Lord, through his sufferings has received an incorruptible crown from You, our God. For having Your strength, he laid low his adversaries, and shattered the powerless boldness of demons. Through his intercessions, save our souls!
Kontakion — Tone 2
You appeared as a bright star announcing Christ with your radiance, which is repulsive to this world, O Martyr John; extinguishing the allure of false gods, you enlighten the faithful, always interceding for us all.

2023.06.02 21:10 An0maIyy Rockstead Higo & JK Dwarf

Missing out on blade show and want a new toy?! You’ve come to the right place!

First up is a really cool knife from Poland, it’s a JK Knives, Dwarf. This is the 8th dwarf and has an unreal action. The detent is light but crisp and the blade falls shut beautifully. It’s in m390 steel with titanium handles. I carried this a few times, but it’s in great shape. I don’t see any snails/scratches, but there is some handling wear on scales. This was $800 from polish customs after shipping/fees.
Asking for $475

Next is my Rockstead Higo J. This is the DLC version on both the scales and blade. Its in overall great shape, but there are two areas of concern, both of which I pictured. 1st is the small chip in the dlc next to the clip, the second is a small imperfection on the mirrored blade. I have zero clue how it got there and what it would take to get it out, but it’s there for now. The blade has zero chips, and is extremely sharp (think laser beam). The action is like the most perfect/broken in CRK that you could imagine!
The blade is hardened to an unreal 65.1 HRC, and is made of DLT571. These come from Japan and are as much works of art as they are knives. This is an older model and is safe to assume that the warranty is no longer in place as it has had multiple owners.
I am looking for $650

I am not looking for trades, but will always consider Holts as I mainly collect morphs, haptics, and specters now. I would also consider a VC Edge, although I doubt what is listed here would pry one away from an owner

Joining the club! Hoping for some feedback.
-Love the ride, interior, and handling. It’s faster than I expected in Sport mode. Gas mileage is also better than expected. Way more fun to drive than my buddy’s S5. Similar to my other friend’s M340i but I prefer the ride of the Stinger.
-I got a nice deal on a Canadian model which I believe is the GT Prestige. So it has a mishmash of GT1 and GT2 features but doesn’t have the front camera for example. Nor the 360 cam. Probably missing some other small details but I can’t notice so far. Also kind of annoyed that CarPlay requires a USB connection. I’ve seen plenty of cars where’s it’s wireless. I really think they dropped the ball on this minor but critical detail for driver enjoyment.
-So far modded only cosmetics. Fully limo tinted all the way around, smoked out tail lights, rear is completely de-badged. Wheels powder coated glossy black along with front KIA decal. Looks nice and a lot of people have been asking what car it is — ha. I was going to install front canards but didn’t realize they came in a trashy Matte plastic from KDM. Will need to dip or paint them glossy before I consider putting them on. Don’t know about how they will hold up with 3M tape either…
-Chrome trim along roofline is getting sun damaged and corroded. I tried a chrome cleaner but it only lasted a day. Should I wrap this or will it be covered under warranty? This is disappointing. My 2012 Acura had chrome trim that still looks brand new to this day.
-Considering smoking out the blinkers on the headlights. Anyone do this yet? I don’t want to do the whole headlight since I’m not a fan of that look.
-Now to the major question. What kind of performance mods have you guys done? I’ve seen a lot of talk of Injen intakes, Borla Exhaust, new HKS plugs, etc. I don’t know how I feel about that piggy back ECU. I’m over my head there and may stay away since I’ve heard it could lead to issues down the road. Any thoughts? Don’t want to break the bank on any mods but absolutely want to get some nicer sound out of the car and a modest horsepower bump. Lastly — what’s a solid radar detector nowadays? I’ve been out of the loop for a while.
Thanks and overall super stoked for the ride. I wish more people bought the car but I also love how rare it is. I didn’t want a cookie cutter BeameAudi/Lexus. Can’t afford a proper M series, RS, AMG. So this is a perfect middle ground.
