Background :
I had a terrible job hunting experience. When I graduated, I succumbed to peer pressure and ended up applying for over 50 internships and more than 100 full-time positions(was not even shortlisted in any of them). Eventually, I came to the realization that relentlessly competing in this rat race served no purpose, so I decided to continue with my own venture(PC building), which remained successful for about four years until it was affected by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During my second job search, I applied filters and focused solely on early-stage startups with smaller team sizes through Angel. I was still considered a fresher since I had no relevant professional software experience, and I was completely fine with it. I applied to around 7 positions, got shortlisted for 2, and eventually got placed at Disecto Technologies Pvt Ltd. It was a Data-Privacy & Security startup, the description was on-point and the pay was decent as well. The position was SDE-l with DRF stack, and the interview process consisted of two rounds - HR & Technical. Despite being in a totally different field professionally, I did enjoy competitive coding, possessed strong problem-solving skills, and actively participated on platforms like Techgig and HackerRank.
Role :
To be honest, initially, I found the codebase quite intimidating due to its sheer size. However, I appreciated the management's approach upon joining. They didn't overwhelm me with tasks right away. Instead, they allowed me sufficient time to become acquainted with the codebase. Fun Fridays helped me connect with the team and gain comfort, leading me to plan some events myself. Before communicating any feature update timelines to clients, the developers were always consulted, and their input was considered. I'm glad that there was no micro-management in the team. The stand-up calls were scheduled well in advance, and we had the flexibility to adjust our work hours accordingly. For requesting leaves, a simple email notification was sufficient. Even same-day leaves were granted no questions asked.
I had an incredible bond with my colleagues in the backend team. We enjoyed engaging in brainstorming sessions once tasks were assigned. Also due to the small team size, we had direct access to top management without any layers in between, this facilitated clear and transparent communication. While working on a critical feature, I encountered a roadblock and found myself stuck. Since my colleagues were typically more active in the evening, the founder himself offered to brainstorm together and find a solution. The work environment was so positive and balanced that I never felt helpless or overwhelmed.
It is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate companies like Disecto and their awesome management. Despite the delayed post, I want to emphasize the significance of recognizing that such companies do exist and can serve as role models for others in the industry. After working at Disecto for 8 months, I decided to move on as I had different plans. I am currently aware that the company is facing a funding crunch, and I genuinely hope that they recover successfully from this situation.

For anyone who reads this, I currently work in an embedded systems domain sort of job. Here is a quick description:
Just curious to see basic descriptions of other jobs to get an idea what is out there.
Here is a description of my job: I work 100% remote at the moment. I have gone in a couple of weeks, but prefer work at home. I write programs (pick a task, place the task in the correct spot in the overall flow, then code it, then test it, then test it again, then test it again...) and optimize code to have a balance of readability and space (literal program size and also stack size). Each time you pick a task, you probably will never finish it. There is always something to expand on with it or fix (as there are either sometimes mistakes with the design of what I am implrementing or bugs), so making good design choices early on definitely pays off. That is the general idea of my job. Scripting tools is honestly my favorite, but there are no style guidelines most of all. Some scripts are monstrosities that are so bad I am surprised I didn't go blind.
Hopefully I didn't give too many details 😳

Interviewer: "What is your most recent job and what did you do?"

Me: "I was the Tech Associate of the retailer that is opposite of Walmart. I assisted Guests with any technology related advice or questions, ensured the merchandise was show-ready, and resolved any...complex, situations to the satisfaction of our Guests. Overall, I was running the department by myself 5 days a week an average of 7 hours each day."

Interviewer: "So you worked in retail. Tell me of a time you encountered a really hostile customer and how did you resolve the situation."

Me: "There was one time when I had a line of roughly 8+ people waiting on me to open merchandise cases for them. I was in the middle of a cell phone activation. Normally this takes 5-10mins, but in this instance I believe I reached the 20+ min mark.

This situation had no hostile Guests, but I cite it because it reflects my ability to handle high pressure situations. Almost the entire line stayed during that 20+ min duration due to my constant communication that I SEE them and my promise to deliver service to them every 2-3 mins. A typical retail associate in that situation, from what I've seen, would unfortunately choose to ignore the line. I chose to be communicative and emphatic."

Interviewer: "It sounds like you have a lot of experience in dealing with customer service. Have you ever worked a Internet Voice Repair role before, and/or do you know what the job will entail?"

Me: "I've never worked this role before, as my decade worth of experience has only been in retail, but I have a rough idea. I use company-issued software and hardware to facilitate phone calls with your customers. Then I need to determine if it is technical related or account related. If technical, then it's my job to assist them, and if I cannot, get them someone who can. If account related, transfer them over to the correct department."

Interviewer: "If I didn't know any better, it sounds like you already work for us! I'd like to continue past the pre-screen interview now and formally invite you to the in-person interview."

Other questions such as those about my hobby

Interviewer: "The starting rate is $20, is that acceptable for you?"

Me: "Your website stated an hourly range of $20-34, including an option to input a specific desired amount. I believe that my decade's worth of retail experience, familiarity with modern technology software, and my ability to handle customer situations of a volatile and complex nature are worth $32 an hour. Your customers need help, I'm here to give it to them."

Interviewer: "If you were an existing employee with us, this conversation would be very different, but the starting rate for new hires is still $20. Are you still okay with that?"


TLDR: I fucking nailed a pre-screen interview, showing competency for a job I've never done before despite being only a cashier my entire life, but big famous internet company will not negotiate beyond $20, despite listing $20-$34 on their own web site, NOT a 3rd party search aggregator

I do not know if this is the sub for this matter. But, here it goes. It is true that I filed my resignation already, and they had read my resignation or knew about it na.
But I had been asked by one of my coworkers one too many times already.
"Kelan ba last day mo? May kapalit ka na ba?" Last week's statement. Followed with "may nahanap na ba sila or ikaw?"
I said no or none, since first of all, the job has low pay for a licensed PT like me who took a brunt job of an equivalent of a PT aide or a support staff (instead of treating patients or clients, this job is more of equipment procurement, maintenance, fixing the classrooms for clinical demonstrations and activities).
It is a noble job, thanks to my immediate supervisor, but it was my first paid job that I had to endure before I found better opportunities during the pandemic and they need my focus na.
She replied it seems like your peers have thriving careers already and it would be difficult to find one that would replace you. In my mind, it is true, because there are only a few licensed people like me who would be up for the job if they can do the same with a bit better payment and actually be with clients to do what they studied for from 8-5 or during their desired hours pa.
I've also shared with many people, esp my peers, that the job is not for someone who is able to do more than their job description, in which makes things harder to even recommend someone to be in this job at all. Working from 8-8, with a minimum wage (let's say from 11k, I became 14k, peers are 15 starting to 23k, then it goes up depending on the company policies), and influencing you to go overtime for better pay was appealing before. But now, it is just dragging at this point. L
After that, a week has passed and she asked again "Kailan last day mo? May nahanap na ba sila na kapalit mo?" was yesterday.
That brushed me off in a way. I know with my not pakikisama ugali, and more of a professional relationship I built for the past year or so, learning r / antiwork, and r / ph antiwork that it's better to have some boundaries talaga with work environments, I guess that is a sign that they want to get rid of me na talaga din kasi I'm not with their tribe, and not tolerant with their work ethics and habits na.

I grew up in a Western country and where I work (a Govt department) is predominantly White. The public sector loves to advertise how “diverse and inclusive” they are but in all the departments I’ve worked in, I’ve seen similar patterns.
Desis and Asians more broadly are over represented in the more corporate functions like IT, finance and procurement and a few have even made it to senior positions. But we are underrepresented in areas like social policy, law, compliance and research and we also tend to stop advancing once we reach the middle management level.
The other thing I’ve noticed is whenever a diverse person speaks up about something problematic that’s happening, the gaslighting will shortly occur. They will then be labelled as “difficult” and hard to get a long with.
While I’ve never experienced direct racism from my colleagues, I think I’ve experienced more subtle racism. For example being overlooked for promotion in favour for less qualified white colleagues, having older white colleagues talk down to me or exhibit behaviours like micromanaging tendencies. I’ve also witnessed another desi colleague who is more junior than me get stuck with all the undesirable work that’s not in her job description. I’ve not witnessed that with my other white colleagues who have been in her role before.
It’s gotten to the point where I’m so fed up that I’m looking for other jobs.

Traffic:
If you have no predictable source of traffic to get leads, then you’re relying on a fluke to scale (will only last a few months max)
I don’t care what your form of traffic is, just have at least one.
Two great options are cold emails and ads.
The more traffic you can get to your offer, the more sales you will make.
Offer:
I’m not taking shots, but a lot of business owners simply do not have a good offeunderstand what makes a good offer.
An offer is NOT a landing page with pricing packages and product descriptions. An offer is how you change the life of a business owner with a direct result.
If you haven’t got one yet, I recommend trying multiple with different audiences to see what works best.
Sales System:
If you’re getting leads, you better get to them while they’re hot.
Even if you have a funnel to book a sales call, you should be following up with every lead that opts-in - booking or not.
About 50% of our sales come from leads who didn’t actually book a call originally.
You don’t need a squeaky clean system while you’re scaling - just have a simple system that gets the job done.
If you get ⅔ of these things in order, then you have a business.
If you perfect 3/3 of these things, you will inevitably hit 6 figure months
