2023.05.30 05:26 PreparationOk620 I need to cancel a trip with my friends

Hi everyone, this is going to be long so I apologise. I am aware that this is a first world problem but it’s less about the actual trip and more about preserving my friendship with someone I consider one of my best friends.
I (21F) went to school with these 3 people, let’s call my close friend (S), her cousin (M) and his girlfriend (B). I recently got back in touch with M and B after we attended an event for S. We hung out a couple times and decided to plan a trip for the summer. Italy and France.
This is obviously very exciting and I felt very grateful to be able to plan such a fun trip with my friends but very early on I ran into an issue which is budget. We don’t live in the US and are all well off in our country but two of them S & M (the cousins) are ridiculously rich even by western country standards. I’m going to list my issues so it’s easier to read.
  1. Airplane tickets. They wanted to go business class but I wanted economy so I could spend my money on shopping. They gave each other looks and I caught on so I told them to go business and I would happily sit in economy. It was a little awkward but in everyone’s best interest so they agreed and we moved on.
  2. Hotels. M sent us an itinerary $350 per night per person. I wanted to be in safe hotels so I agreed. A few weeks later this has changed to $550 per night and this was not okay with me. I’m an anxious person and didn’t want to cause conflict so I call someone for advice and they told me to just suck it up and communicate and that if S is really a true friend they’d understand and want me to be comfortable. I call S and address my concerns and they are nice about it and told me nothing is finalised and of course we can change it. I was relieved. A few weeks later nothing has changed and it’s like the conversation never happened. Instead of getting the cheapest room at the fancy hotels they wanted balconies that no one is ever going to use. I tried to say do we really need a balcony and they just laughed it off.
  3. Booking restaurants. We meet up to plan the small things. I have a friend who lives in France so I ask for recommendations. They send back a long message with restaurants and bars. We are going through this list and M starts making jokes about how they are inexpensive and probably suck. (€30 a dish) so yes not Michelin star but not unhygienic by any means. Only wanting to go to caviar lobster restaurants but I stay silent because I like food too and it’s fine.
  4. Other activities. Boat day, rental car. Need the fanciest boat but I don’t say anything because boards are fun and it’s fine. Rental car for one day is €2800 ( I won’t be driving) so it doesn’t matter to me if it’s a vintage sports car or just a taxi. I say no because they called me and made jokes about how I’m sitting in the backseat alone because B has now cancelled due to work.
  5. B has cancelled. I feel unheard and I don’t want to cheat them out of their luxury trip experience. I don’t want to keep nagging about things. It’s not fair to them or me. Not to mention things like the boat and car are now divided by 3 not 4. Without B I feel like the third wheel between two cousins who are best friends. They also speak a different regional language than me and often start communicating that way and I have to ask that they don’t do that multiple times a day. I feel left out and don’t want to not enjoy myself fully. I don’t know what to do but cancel at this point because our preferences are different.
I don’t think badly of S at all. They think that getting regular rooms instead of suites is a compromise. They think using Ubers rather than getting a car + chauffeur is a compromise. If I could afford that, of course I would go. I know that if I go on the trip, many more things like this will come up and at this point I just care about preserving my friendship with S.
If I do cancel, they will still go without me. So I wouldn’t be ruining it for anyone else. I just need advice on how to approach the situation and try to get S to see it from my side.
If you got this far, thank you for reading and I apologise for the formatting since I’m on my phone.

2023.05.30 04:22 WestCoastPancakes September Campervan Itinerary

My husband and I are traveling to your amazing country for 10 days in mid September, and we are looking for advice about narrowing down our itinerary from locals/experienced travelers. Our plans are fairly up in the air right now. We booked a small, self-contained camper van for 7 nights (pickup and drop off in Christchurch), in hopes that we can be a bit flexible about where we go because we know the weather can be unpredictable.
  1. If we are in a self-contained vehicle, is it necessary to book campsites in advance? We are interested in freedom camping, but we aren't sure how quickly free sites fill at this time of year.
  2. We are hoping to visit areas like Mount Cook, Queenstown, Lake Tekapo, Wanaka, Fiordland, etc. Are any of these areas exceedingly difficult/impossible to visit at this time of year due to expected severe weather or seasonal road closures?
  3. I know September is the "shoulder season" and we may experience pretty unpredictable weather. Our van rental includes snow chains and a portable heater to be used as needed. Of the above regions, is there anywhere in particular you think we should book electric hookup sites in advance due to very low temps? (We have experience tent camping in -4C temps).
Thanks for your help, we can't wait to explore your beautiful home and we promise to treat it with respect!

2023.05.30 03:55 autotldr Italy: Agents die when boat capsizes on Lake Maggiore

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 43%. (I'm a bot)
Two Italian intelligence agents and a retired Israeli security forces member were among four victims of Sunday's boating disaster on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, local officials say.
Anya Bozhkova, the 50-year-old Russian wife of the boat's captain, also died.
According to Italian news outlets, the boat had been carrying about 25 people who were celebrating a birthday when a storm developed over the lake, later turning into a "Small hurricane".
The 16m long boat capsized and sank on Sunday evening between the towns of Sesto Calende and Arona.
Everyone onboard went into the water, but many of the passengers swam ashore or were rescued by other boats.
Lake Maggiore - on the south side of the Alps - is shared by Italy and Switzerland and is a popular destination for tourists.

2023.05.30 03:43 Globofchaos After Valhalla chapter 43

One month ago a British man wrote in his journal
"During the wars everything has changed in the nature of science. It became more about survival than science after all . Between the lives of humans and gods it seems that only one can make it after all..or so we thought. One of the many questions was why are the valkyries dying off faster than humans or gods and how do we stop this . I want to study this Valkyrie as she seems to be one of the remaining few alive from this shit fest we call a planet "
Isaac closed his journal getting up from the metal table , "Hey where are you going ? " Marie 's husband Pierre asked . "I'm going to gather some info on the valkyrie , " Isaac told him walking to another room. The dark room opened revealing Gondul, she was completely naked with only the long light blue hair covering her chest. Her sapphire eyes opened at Isaac. The philosopher pressed the button releasing the liquids from the healing chamber then took off her mask . Gondul rubbed her eyes before staring at him . "Who are you and What do you want ? " Gondul was rather calm about her predicament. "Come with me " Isaac took his shirt and jacket off, giving it to Gondul. She followed him outside wearing Isaac oversized clothing and shorts she found. Glow in the dark mushrooms shined a bright color lighting up the forest they live in . Gondul awed at the scenery following him to the path of light until they reached a nearby lake .
Despite the first meeting Gondul felt nothing off about him still she was cautious about her surroundings. "How do we get over there without a boat ? " Gondul asked ."One minute " Isaac told her as a fog passed by . He jumped on the fog reaching his hand out . Gondul noticed multiple scars on his arm once the light was shown . She accepted his hand and pulled herself up on the foggy cloud allowing them to float across the water . Underneath were glowing fish swimming aimlessly beneath and flowers that bright up . "You are probably wondering why I brought you over here " Isaac mentioned. "Actually yeah I was wondering why you woke me up in the middle of the night " Gondul laid her cheek on the cloud "but it is beautiful ". "You really don't remember me do you ? " Isaac asked. He stood bright on the moon light to make it easier for her to see . "Oh right " the memory clicked in her head at that very moment. "You are one of Tesla's friends that touched me and I didn't mind because you are very handsome, " Gondul commented. "Uh..thanks " Isaac replied, Gondul was quick to notice a few scars on his arms and body.
"What happened to you ? " She asked, "Lots basically 12 months didn't feel like 12 months …so let me start . Basically after you and Tesla died THE REAL Ragnarok came . Tesla had no clue how wrong he was for saying Ragnarok wasn't going to come .
Isaac- So after that Hell fuckery of a war I became the leader because for a few reasons. 1 I actually have fighting experience, 2 I'm a very good detective in many areas , 3 I can handle stressful situations the best . So we spent the last 12 months dealing with everyone's ass . After the war was over we hid in the Forest because the underworld was too dangerous. During my hunts I ended up finding you completely naked covered in wounds speaking complete gibberish then you passed out in my arms . You were in that healing chamber for two weeks and during those two weeks I looked out for you trying to understand what the hell was going on . Finally one day you woke up like nothing happened and now you are here .
"Wow .." Gondul was surprised "You saved my life …" . "Yeah I guess …" Isaac felt the valkyrie hug him . "Your name is Isaac right? " she laid her head on his chest. "Yes Isaac Newton " He answered, patting her back. For some reason he felt his heartbeat a little faster . How long has it been since he had been hugged ? Or even she ? What happened to her that led to the massive wounds on her flesh like that. Isaac shook his head . He didn't want to ask her so soon. "This place is very beautiful…" Gondul pointed out especially the fish..". "Yeah I believe it's because of the natural bacteria in the water that's causing this mutation. It's very hard to eat when you are vegetarian, " Isaac sighed.
"Maybe I can help you with some stuff.." Gondul said "No matter what I'm in your dept ". "Gondul…." Newton paused " No you are not we ..are just friends .."
The flash back ended with Gondul screaming forcing Newton up . "Stay there I'm going to get help " Edison came to his senses running away. Terror bird pecked on the tree knocking Gondul down. Raptor hissed at her as she tried to run only for the terror bird to sink its beak into her leg. *crunch * Gondul fell on the floor, blood dripping down . She opened her eyes realizing who it was, "Isaac…." . The long haired philosopher breathed heavily. Rage boiling inside of him as he sunk the spear deeper into the terror bird. "Don't you dare touch her " he growled, pulling the weapon back before launching another attack. Terror bird attempted to kick Isaac but failed dodging the attack. Newton returned with his own kick with enough force to break the predator's leg forcing it on the ground. Seconds later Isaac fatally stabbed the bird until it no longer struggled . Newton's spear snapped in half during the attack, " Isaac.." Gondul rushed over to see his new scar . She pressed her hand over his ab stopping the bleeding, "it's nothing over had many like this before " Isaac claimed.
"And you saved me once again " Gondul blushed lighty, "Yeah I did …" Newton turned around " Hey Gondul I want to talk to you later ..There is a favor I want you to do for me " Isaac mentioned. "You want me to help you with the bird ?" She wondered. "No it's something else " Isaac claimed " I want to talk to you in private…".

Hi, sorry if this is a noob question. I've never been magnet fishing before, but I've watch a good number of Youtube videos.
I've seen a lot of people magnet fishing in rivers, lakes and piers, but I've always wondered why no one seems to take a boat, go out to sea and magnet fish from there? Is it not possible? Is there nothing to find?

2023.05.30 03:30 SBrookbank Moving to Norfolk? Read this before you post.

Welcome to HamptonRoadsVAHousing! Our subreddit gets a lot of questions about relocating to the area, so be sure to search the subreddit to see if your specific questions have already been answered.
Here's a quick list of the top tips and most frequently repeated advice about moving to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area:
Live on the same side of the water as you work. Our many bridges, tunnels and bridge-tunnels frequently experience heavy traffic volume and become chokepoints even on days without incidents or accidents. Commuting from the Southside (Norfolk/Virginia Beach) to the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg) and vice versa is not recommended. Additionally, many water crossings are now or will eventually be tolled. Get an EZ-Pass to pay the lowest rate.
This area floods. Look at FEMA flood maps for the area you want to move to and be aware of possibly needing flood insurance. Similarly, our area occasionally experiences hurricanes. Know your Evacuation Zone and learn more about Hurricane Preparations. Hampton Roads has a lot to offer. Obviously there is the beach. But there is also a surprisingly good and growing food & craft beer scene. A great many museums and activities. And an easy drive to the mountains and other major cities. Career wise the medical center is growing year over year, and is only expected to continue expanding into a major hub for the region. Norfolk offers a slightly more urban feel, with lots of great food joints and cultural amenities, all while being walking and bike friendly. Virginia Beach is more suburban in feel, and has a large amount of great neighborhoods at a decent price not too far from the beach. Chesapeake is even more suburban, but more affordable. Suffolk is growing, but still by all rights could be considered mostly rural. (credit to u/Here4thebeer3232)
Check crime reports. Crime can happen anywhere but some areas see more reported incidents than others. Great areas can be adjacent to bad neighborhoods, sometimes separated only by a road or a few blocks. When buying or renting a residence, try to visit the area at different times of day and strike up conversations with locals to get a feel for the location. Use Norfolk's Crime Mapping tool to view crime reports and statistics.
Norfolk Neighborhoods of Note
Chelsea/West Ghent: Small former industrial area that is now home to 2 top tier Breweries and is a central part of the Elizabeth River Bike Trail. Has a growing culinary scene. Limited residential options.
Colonial Place: Upscale residential neighborhood with waterside access. Flooding is a concern in this area, but neighborhoods are family friendly and homes are gorgeous.
Downtown: the urban center of our region. Growing residential population to match established barestaurant, entertainment and financial scenes.
East Beach: Newly constructed high end beach condos right on the Chesapeake Bay. Has abundant docking for boats, fishing holes, and beach access. A more quiet and older community.
Fort Norfolk: Growing area adjacent to EVMS and Sentara Medical Center. The unofficial midtown of Norfolk, that is slowly becoming a part of the city skyline. Floods often.
Freemason: straight-laced & upscale enclave adjacent to downtown and built around cobblestone streets.
Ghent: trendy, historic and filled to the brim with character, culture and delicious cuisine. The neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, Colley Avenue, and adjacent 21st and 22nd streets are lined with eclectic eateries, unique shops, art galleries and antique stores.
Larchmont: High end homes in a family friendly neighborhood. Adjacent to ODU, but without the noise, Larchmont is home to incredible homes in a very green and quiet part of the city. Also has waterside access. Oceanview: Affordable community right on the beach. Still considered more working class, it is slowly looking to compete with the Virginia Beach Oceanfront as a tourist attraction. Home to the Bold Mariner Brewery and Jessy's Taqueria
NEON District: Growing Arts district, adjacent to downtown. Home to a variety of arts shops and artisan restaurants, as well as the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Harrison Opera house.
Park Place: Park Place is a historic neighborhood centrally located to the north of Downtown Norfolk. Park Place offers multimodal access to health and fitness facilities, dining, coffee shops, retail, visual art, live music, and community for people from all walks of life. This historic residential neighborhood is a diverse and inclusive community, and is comprised of a mix of single detached houses, condos, luxury, market rate, and affordable rentals homes and apartments. Located between 23rd street and 38th street, and between Granby street on the east, and Colley ave on the west, the Park Place area neighborhood includes two business districts, the 35th Street Business District and the Railroad District, and is walkable to the North Colley, Ghent, and Riverview business districts.
Railroad District: Rapidly growing former warehouse district located between Ghent and Park place. Home to the majority of Breweries in the city. While could be considered gentrified, is still home to novel cultural centers such as 757 Makerspace and Nomads Clothing Exchange.
Riverview: Immediately adjacent to the Norfolk Zoo and
Lafayette park. With waterside access and a small commercial corridor, Riverview is a good area for all ages. Also home to MJs Tavern, the largest LGBT bar in the metropolitan area.
St Paul's District: Under construction
West Ocean View: Turns into a parking lot for HRBT traffic every time the base lets out.
Willoughby Spit: Quiet residential sandbar. Remains somewhat isolated from HRBT traffic, but offers a commanding presence along the Chesapeake Bay.
VirginiaBeach Neighborhoods of Note
Chesapeake/Chic's Beach: "locals only" beachside community.
Oceanfront: touristy stretch of beach + boardwalk, hotels, and trinket shops.
Town Center: VB's Central Business District including Pembroke Mall and other high-end shopping, dining, and entertainment.

2023.05.30 03:04 handmethetequila Lost Heirloom in Lake Travis

Anyone know anyone or a company who dives for lost items in Lake Travis? My best friend lost a family heirloom piece of jewelry on a boat today. We can pinpoint the likely spot and time it was probably found with the help of photos.
Anyone know who we could call to help hunt for this ? She’s devastated and is the type who always takes care of everyone else. I’d really like to at least try for a miracle.
Update 1: Robert Weiss immediately answered his phone and we are planning a search effort. What a lovely guy. Tysm for the rec team !
Update 2: We need a boat to be able to take Robert out. My friend misreported the original location and it is not Lake Travis. Robert still wants to get out there and search, but we’re having a hard time finding a boat to take him. Anyone have a boat or know someone with a boat on Lake Austin available tomorrow or Wednesday???

2023.05.30 02:51 delicioustaco9 Boat rental damage

Rented a boat with some friends over the weekend and we bumped into another boat while parking. Only damage to both boats was a scratch on our boat and theirs. In fact ours was mostly buffed out with a rag.
Fair is fair though and we did not get our security deposit refunded. I received a text message from the rental company saying “since we withheld the security deposit, there will be no further action” since I asked if we were “settled.” However, I read stories online about people getting a bill weeks later for damages, etc. I’m worried that the company can try to collect for damages to the boat that I didn’t inflict.
Does the text message mean anything as far as being truly settled?
