2023.06.09 03:17 JereTheJuggler 27/EST/PC - Looking for long term friends

Hey, my name is Jeremiah, or Jere for short.
I'm mostly into puzzle games which sadly tend to be single player, but with 200+ games in my Steam library I've acquired a few multiplayer games over the years that I like too.
Here's a top 10 of games that are single player or I'm not really interested in playing again right now, but would love to talk about:
I work as a programmer (js, php, C#, VB.Net, MySQL) from 7am to 3:30, and am available for gaming from 4 to 9pm. I always have Discord open while at work and would love a distraction. lol
I'm expecting that you'll be online and at least be able to chat most days. If you're only online like 2 days a week then it's not really going to work out.
I'm pretty chill and love talking about music too. I'm mostly into heavy metal and have been trying to expand my horizons a bit lately.
Voice chat is required if we're playing a game together. Using in-game chat takes too much away from actually playing the game for me.
Send me a dm with your Discord if you're interested.

2023.06.09 02:53 Let-Independent I've been DMing for about 8 years, and I feel like I'm just now starting to get a hang of it

Truthfully I DM'd for about 6 months back in 2002, but it doesn't really count. My friend's mom found out we were playing and got mad (echos of the Satanic panic). I took up the mantel when I saw the 5e starter set at the store randomly.Tricked my friends into playing it and now we're pretty consistent. I any case, even though I've DM'd for so long, I just now feel comfortable. I still get pre-game performance anxiety but I'm much more comfortable now than before. Here are some general lessons and observations I've used.
It May Be Your World, but it's Their StoryDon't fall too much in love with your story or campaign that you're obsessed with twists / story telling gimmicks. Players (at least my players) don't care too much about that stuff. What they care about is their part in the story. You can have politics and high-concept stuff, but only in service of what your players can do with it. They'll want to explore branches that you may not have intended. Make sure there are consequences. If an evil lich is preparing to turn a city into an army of undead minions, but the party wants to take a detour to hell to rescue the soul of a beloved comrade, by all means let them. But make sure they understand the consequences of what that means when they get back.
I like world building. It's part of why I DM. But I know that my players will never care about the lore and NPCs nearly as much as I will. My players have had an NPC servant for two years that follows them around. They still don't remember his name. They're much too busy thinking about how they're going to troll the local magistrate or get enough money to buy out their contract with a corrupt merchant that has them under his thumb.
PCs Latch Onto the Weirdest Details
Be careful how you describe places and characters. One time the players were looking for information for their current quest. I generated a random NPCs toi give them some intel and described her as having 4 fingers on her left hand as a random character detail. My players honed in on that and thought it was important. They took it as a sign she was involved in an underground crime ring and was thus lieing to them. I thought that angle was interesting, so I shuffled my plans to make it "canon". But man, i do get confused about what they pay attention to and what they don't.
Less is More
I used to carry a bunch of props, minis, books and binders of notes with me. It's not necessary. Minis and scenary looks awesome and is fun, but man is it a bitch to manage. I've since switched to a semi-digital format and that has been a huge help in all honesty. I can have all my monsters open on seperate tabs on DNDbeyond. Instead of drawn battle maps, I lay crappy TV on the table and set up miniatures on top of it. The maps I make in Dungeondraft (or steal online). And I run them on FoundryVTT, which I also use for managing my campaign notes. Does it take away from some of the tactile tabletopness? Probably, but it's been a godsend in managing everything. The characters still have minis, but I just use mostly generic tokens for monsters and NPCs.
On a side note - Paper character sheets suuuuuuuuck. I recently saw the condition of my player's character sheets and they're a mess. I don't know how they keep track of everything.
USE MUSIC!!!
I held off doing this for a long time, because I felt insecure about it. But it helps keep your players attention so well. Plus when it changes drastically, it's you can feel the tension. It's one of the most powerful tools a DM can use.
My Favorite Resources / Books
Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master - Great for showing what you should be focusing on when prepping. The Monsters Know What they're Doing - How to treat monsters as more than stat blocks. Dives into the sort of behaviors and tactics each monster would do.
The Game Master's Book of Traps, Puzzles and Dungeons - All sorts of interesting mechanics you can pick and drop into your game.
The Ultimate RPG Gameplay Guide - Awesome book integrates all sorts of awesome theories from improv and creative writing and how you can use them for playing tabletop RPGs.
The Ultimate RPG Game Master's World Building Guide - Provides an excellent toolset for building a game world.
FoundryVTT - Even if you run an all paper game, I would recommend using it for campaign planning. It has everything you could want. I love the way it handles notes. It's super easy to use. Switched to it from Roll20 and never looked back.Dungeondraft - One of the best map making tools I've found. Pretty easy to use (does take some learning though). I had been using Inkarnate, but Inkarnate is terrible for battle maps due to how tedious making Walls is. There is a plug in for Dungeondraft that lets you fully upload into Foundry, and it will recognize your walls and what not. Super dope for setting up lighting

“Mendicants, a nun with five qualities is cast down to hell. What five? Without examining or scrutinizing, she praises those deserving of criticism, and criticizes those deserving of praise. She has wrong speech and wrong action, and wastes gifts given in faith. A nun with these five qualities is cast down to hell.
A nun with five qualities is raised up to heaven. What five? After examining and scrutinizing, she criticizes those deserving of criticism, and praises those deserving of praise. She has right speech and right action, and doesn’t waste gifts given in faith. A nun with these five qualities is raised up to heaven.”
Note: We don’t get any indication from the sutta why it was addressed specifically about bhikkhunīs (nuns), however we do know that senior monks would give talks to the bhikkhunī saṅgha on the uposatha. Of course these same qualities apply to bhikkhus (monks).

2023.06.09 02:30 Appropriate_Rent_243 weird issues with buying the game (PC)

so, the other day I bought the game. then for no apparent reason blizzard refunded the game and I couldn't play it anymore. I spoke with my bank and they said that they had no part in that and it's a vendor problem. Today i bought the game again online, and downloaded it...but it says "can't play Diablo IV now" And according to the Battle.net transaction history, the second purchase never happened, even thought I have an email confirming the transaction number. I look at my bank account online and it shows the new transaction.
When I look at the battlenet app under "my games" it says 0, and under "installed" it says 1
so it seems like according to blizzard I installed the game but I don't own it. It's really frustrating because I can see the file sin my folders, but when I click the .exe file nothing happens.
I can't find anything helpful on the blizzard website. has anyone else had this weird problem?

2023.06.09 01:17 MarchingArtsBTN Hey fellow score nerds - I built a new website called bandScores as a place to host historical scores for every activity within the marching arts. Come check it out!

Hi everyone! I’m here to share an exciting (and very massive) data project I’ve been working on over the past year.
Some of you may remember that I started a project last year called Marching Arts by the Numbers. My first project that I shared with the community was a dashboard/web app for scores from the 2022 DCI. The dashboard was updated daily throughout the season with new scores, recaps, and other metrics as the season progressed. Last fall got really busy for me, but I picked up data work again in the winter and built similar dashboards for the 2023 WGI guard and percussion seasons.
I’ve decided to rebrand a bit and rename my project to bandScores. I’m also really excited to share that I’ve launched a new website at https://www.bandscores.net/. For the longest time, I’ve wanted one central place on the web where I can look up current or historical scores for any activity in the marching arts and more easily compare scores and recaps across shows or seasons. Having yet to come across anything like that, I decided to build a site myself!
The site is still very much in its infancy with a lot of work yet to be done on future projects and pages. But I’m happy to share the work I’ve done so far. Here is a list of some of the different pages that are currently published:
Some of the projects I’m planning for the near future:
All together, between scraping and cleaning the data, building the dashboards, and building the website, I've worked on this project for probably close to 1000 hours, if not more - and I’m still only at the tip of the iceberg with work that I want to put into this! I’m simply doing this as a fun passion project and as something to give back to the community. I appreciate any feedback or suggestions you have and hope you enjoy this new website and resource!

2023.06.09 01:11 Gamzese Can’t Re-install on PS5

I bought the ultimate edition on PS5 and have been playing it since early access.
I had an issue yesterday during what should be login with “Something went wrong” and a code that google told me indicated network connectivity issues, but the internet connection was fine.
So uninstalled with the intention of reinstalling. However, on the PS5 itself, the game shows “In Library” but I only have the option to “Learn more” or “Unfollow”. No install option.
In the PS5 app I can ask it to “Download to console” but it never starts. In the app it sits there “Waiting to download” and doesn’t start downloading to the console.
I found an online troubleshooting guide and tried updating system software, restoring licences, restoring default settings, clearing cache and rebuilding the database but nothing has changed.
The only other thing I can think of is I created a battle.net account for my son to be able to play with me, which worked, and maybe that account is confusing access now. I checked the linked accounts in battle net though and my one, which purchased it, is linked to the PS5.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this?
Who do I even contact? Blizzard or Sony?
Edit: Something happened because now it’s installing. Yay!

2023.06.08 23:58 Kingtubby52 Is it time to euthanize?

Hey everyone, I was hoping to get some advice for my little blue betta. About a week ago I noticed the filter for the 2.5 gallon tank it's in wasn't working properly and the fish wasn't being super active, mostly laying around in the low hiding spots of the tank. I took out the filter and gave it a good cleaning and put it back in. I didn't think much of it because I'd done this before but I had not cleaned it as thoroughly the previous time. Since then, my fish has continued to behave lethargic and sometimes will not move for 12+ hours from the same spot. I've noticed a slight discoloration on his underside as well as behind the gills. It's a white/gray/metallic color, which has made me think the fish may have graphite disease, however it has not spread very far if it IS graphite. The fish has also been doing what I have found is called "Betta vertical death hang" where the head is facing downwards in the rocks and the rear is floating. I'm not sure how long graphite takes to really set in or if that's what this even is. I moved the fish so I could do a full water change / tank cleaning (I noticed a few white "spots" on an area of the tank that didn't get a lot of water flow, would this be ammonia maybe?), as well as replaced part of the filter. At this point, I'm not sure if I should maybe consider getting some salts / medicine online or if euthanizing with clove oil is the best situation. I would like to mention that if I move any decorations or accidentally touch the fish with one of my cleaning nets, it will bolt off and swim energetically but only for a few seconds and then it will float back to the bottom of wherever it's decided to stop.
This is my first time caring for a betta, and I've had it just over a year. I do feel really guilty about this entire situation, as I keep telling myself that removing and cleaning the filter probably caused some sort of shock.
I'm not sure how old it was whenever I got it, as I took it from a friend who was not properly caring for it. Is there also a chance it could just be age?
Thanks for any advice, and sorry if I missed anything! I do not have any pictures currently as I do not wish to disturb the fish anymore than I already have today when I checked on it.

2023.06.08 23:23 AmericanScream "Get Out Of Crypto Platforms Now!" - Former head of the SEC's Cybercrime division explains why he's not some out-of-touch boomer who doesn't understand. He explains precisely why doing business with these entities is BAD NEWS.

By John Reed Stark
Original post: https://twitter.com/JohnReedStark/status/1666780985189433347

Get out of crypto platforms now, I can't say it any plainer. Having worked as an attorney in the SEC Enforcement Division for almost 20 years (including 11 years as Chief of the SEC Office of Internet Enforcement), I believe that we now know for certain that crypto trading platforms are under a U.S. regulatory/law enforcement siege which has only just begun.

And before you chop my head off with vitriol, ad hominems and OK Boomerisms, please allow me to explain the situation with only facts and research.
And before you label me a bureaucratic, washed-up SEC shill, please bear in mind that while I may indeed be washed up (!), I am typically an outspoken and dedicated SEC critic (see, e.g., https://twitter.com/JohnReedStark/status/1656774452388962305?s=20). I also have no stake of any kind in the cryptoverse. I am 100% objective, independent and neutral. Just seeking truth, always.
My take is that the SEC is spot-on with their crypto-related enforcement efforts. No matter what the carnival barkers promise, it is axiomatic that crypto trading platforms are high-risk, perilous and inherently unsafe. Please read on to understand my reasoning.

Why A Lack of SEC Registration Matters

U.S. SEC registration of financial firms: (1) mandates that investor funds and securities be handled appropriately without conflicts of interest; (2) ensures that investors understand the risks involved in purchasing the often illiquid and speculative securities that are traded on a cryptocurrency platform; (3) makes buyers aware of the last prices on securities traded over a cryptocurrency platform; and (4) provides adequate disclosures regarding their trading policies, practices and procedures.
Overall, entities providing financial services must carefully handle access to, and control of, investor funds, and provide all users with adequate protection and fortification.
With traditional SEC-registered financial firms, the SEC has unlimited and instantaneous visibility into every aspect of operations. With crypto trading platforms, the SEC lacks any sort of oversight and access — and has scant ability to detect, investigate and deter fraudulent conduct. As a result, the crypto marketplace operates without much supervision, lacking:

What the Crypto Regulatory Vacuum Means

For customers of digital asset platforms like most so-called crypto exchanges, there is not just a gap in customer protections, but a chasm. For example unlike SEC-registered financial firms, crypto trading platforms have:
It's all straight-forward and commonsensical. SEC registration establishes critical requirements that protect investors from individual risk and protect capital markets from global systemic risk. The requirements also make U.S. markets among the safest, most robust, most vibrant and most desirable marketplaces in the world.
Thanks for reading. With my blessing (and nothing but love for you), please feel free to launch the hate. Full Stop.

2023.06.08 21:47 OpticalData Healthier alternatives to replace Reddit

Lifted (with permission) from today's Stay Grounded newsletter post

Lemmy - Decentralized Communities and Link Aggregation

Lemmy isn’t one website, it is many sites that work together. It’s kind of like if every subreddit was it’s own thing. Lemmy is to Reddit what Mastodon is to Twitter, meaning it’s decentralized, no single company controls it (and nobody can make the sort of changes Reddit is trying to make now)
With Lemmy, you register with one “instance” (website) and use that account to comment and post on other Lemmy instances. Importantly, unlike with subreddits, instances can block other instances, which helps to keep conversations from getting derailed by those pushing outside agendas.
Examples:
Lemmy.ml, BeeHaw.org, Lemmy.one, Sopuli.xyz
Pros
  • Structurally nearly identical to Reddit
  • Greater control over what content you see and don’t
  • No “brigading” (instance mods can block other instances entirely)
  • Low incentive for toxicity (unlike for-profit social media)
  • No risk of corporate overlords “rug pulling” your communities away
Cons:
  • Still very new, not nearly as popular as Reddit
Lemmy is growing rapidly, but it still needs more active users to establish critical mass. If Lemmy instances were to catch on I think it would be a great way to keep all the good parts of Reddit without the bad ones.

LibReddit and Teddit - Alternative Reddit Frontends

Alternative front-ends are really neat. A quick explanation is that they are fast, ad-free, and privacy-focused ways to view popular websites like Reddit. The two most popular alternative front-ends for Reddit are: LibReddit (“redesign” style) and Teddit (“old-style” reddit). Anyone can set up and host these, so there are a lot with some minor differences. Here a few examples you can check out:
Examples:
Pros:
  • It’s literally reskinned reddit with all of the same content
  • No ads/suggested content
  • Significantly faster loading (usually)
  • Streamlined experience
Cons:
  • It’s literally reskinned reddit with all of the same toxicity and “junk food”
  • Sometimes your chosen frontend can go down (switching is easy but annoying)

RSS Readers - News Feeds Without Clickbait

I am always surprised at how few people truly understand how wonderful RSS readers can be. It’s most of the benefits of link-aggregator style social media with none of the drama, and not sorted by “popularity”. I think the only reason they’re not more popular is that they take a few minutes to set up.
Pros:
  • Non-algorithmic custom news feed
  • No clickbait
  • Tailored to your interests
  • Most feed readers actually allow you follow Reddit subreddits within them
Cons:
  • Not as useful if you primarily visit Reddit for the “communal” elements.
  • Takes a bit of time to find sources you like
How to curate an RSS reader. I also have a cheap tablet that is essentially just a dedicated RSS reader device. It’s very nice for when I want to sit for a minute and read a little without committing to a book.
I think the best path forward for those seeking a healthier alternative to Reddit is to mix all three suggestions:
  • Sign up for the places you want to see grow.
  • Use alternative front-ends when visiting Reddit itself.
  • Don’t use use social media at all to curate your news.
Lastly if you can bring yourself to do it (and you can! get all entertainment off of your phone!

2023.06.08 21:27 charenton_ [META] r/DefCringeNoodles will be participating in the Reddit Blackout from June 12 to 14

While we are but a tiny sub, it's only correct that we collectively join the Reddit Blackout from June 12 to 14 (or whenever we remember to unprivate the sub) in protest of upcoming API changes that will kill third party Reddit apps.
If you’re unaware of the situation, here is some context.
Apollo and Reddit Is Fun have officially announced they will end on June 30 and many others will surely make announcements soon, if they haven't already.
(I currenly use the official Reddit app to moderate everything through my phone and it fucking sucks.)
Much like Dennis, the braintrust at Reddit has shot themselves in the foot by alienating its userbase, ignoring legitimate concerns, overcharging for subpar content, and feeding its users garbage for far too long. Much like Dennis, Reddit exploits its community and relies on volunteer labour to keep itself running on a day-to-day basis. Much like Dennis, Reddit requires an active fanbase and daily engagement to be relevant in a rapidly changing online environment. And very much like Dennis, Reddit may never recover from this short-sighted decision.
You can participate by not visiting Reddit during those 48 hours. More protest resources can be found at /Save3rdPartyApps, including this post here.
Let's all go do something more worthwhile with this time than continuing to feed a megaconglomerate that couldn't give a fuck about the consumers of its content. Plus, we all get 48 Def Noodles-free hours (or more depending on when we remember to unprivate the sub), which is a net positive for everyone!
And remember: we love you ❤️😉
