Many of you know me directly or indirectly as the (now retired) Silph Road Scientist who used to publish raid attacker spreadsheets, actually even as "prestiger" spreadsheets even before raids existed, who predicted forced nest migrations, or as the co-discoverer (together with u/DrThod_PokemonGo) of the egg rarity tiers, or just as the guy who tried fun and funny raid challenges with teams of small unevolved Pokémon, already before raids were even a thing.
I started playing in July 2016 and I played almost every single day between November 2016 and March 2023.
My passion for statistics / quantitative analysis + geo-located stuff had me hooked, and the challenge of achieving different goals kept me in the game despite the frequent bugs and the lack of communication from Niantic's side.
I decided to stop playing cold turkey when Niantic announced the price increase for remote raid passes, but that was just the final nail in thecoffin Koffing in a season full of frustrations, which in turn were only the tip of the iceberg above a huge chunk of unsolved issues.
2) Then in March I felt for the umpteenth time the rush to remove Frustration exactly in that week because it's just one week (or less) every three months, and not even with a fixed calendar.
3) Meanwhile I was hovering in the 2000s in GBL, without much hope to achieve Veteran any time soon, and still being forced to tank and go back up to get Rare Candies (because a 1-4 followed by a 4-1 gives 3 Rare Candies while two 3-2 sets give 0 Rare Candies).
4) I also realized that the "Go Battle League Pass" locked Elite TMs behind 900-950 battles per quarter, which amount to 20 monthly hours of GBL. At a $15 hourly salary that corresponds to $300 per month i.e. $3600 per year. Not sure if everyone realizes how much time/money it is.
5) At the end of March, the "Bronzor Cup" obviously added to the frustration level.
6) So the remote raiding kill (which not only meant I would have a hard time competing for the pokeraids Phantom Drafts, but also meant that walking to a gym locally, finding no one, and asking for remote help on Discord wouldn't be a possibility anymore) was just the cherry on top.
But these are just the final hits that made me realize there are many more unsolved issues in the game.
2) Related but slightly different: Rarity goes from "impossible" to "too much of it" AND BACK in a matter of days. I'd spend months chasing a rare Pokémon (e.g. Togetic), only for there to be a 3-hour window where I'd get plenty of it. But if in those 3 hours my daughter's school organizes an event, I may miss 90% of that exclusive time window and go back to "impossible" rarity at the end of the event. It also made any buddy walking or egg hatching or spawn chasing feel useless, because the game now is mostly "play in the scheduled obligation time to get what you need".
3) Being force-fed event after events also deprives players of the time to explore "natural" spawns (which are bad anyway) or nests (which nobody reports anymore because it's pointless on many levels).
4) It's very hard to coordinate with other players. For years we had to just be lucky and bump into other players by chance, and then try to find the right third-party app for that particular community (Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord...). Campfire is too little, too late, and not available for everyone yet.
5) Most game incentives cater to rule violators (mostly spoofers, multiaccounters and account sharers). Raids must be in person? "We'll fly to it." Guaranteed XL from trades? "I don't need your help, I just do 100 daily trades with my baby account." Regional exclusives? "My sister is in New Zealand, if you want I can ask her to catch a Relicanth for you." Especially multiaccounters get a lot of the good stuff: a second account, even without significant work put into it, adds firepower to raids, especially with the Mega attack bonus, it is a better Pokémon transfer "sink" than Professor Willow, who almost never gives XL candy, while "trades" with the alt account are often guaranteed, and a second account of a different team can conveniently take out the demotivated gym placeholders for 50 guaranteed coins a day. I literally emigrated away from a country that implicitly tolerates rule violators. I'm now leaving a game that implicitly tolerates rule violators.
6) Raids have been broken since freaking 2017 and no fix is in sight. I'm referring to the extremely annoying bugs called phantom hits and boss health regeneration.
7) RNG is everywhere. Spawns are random, eggs are random, IVs are random, the number of XL candies is random, GBL encounters are random, raid bosses appear randomly, nests rotate randomly, raid rewards are random, quests are random, and so on and so on. Yes, that's what keeps players trying for more, and yes, in the long term many things even out, but it's still quite frustrating.
8) Many ways of wasting raid passes. People backing out at the last moment because there is no in-game communication channel (and because the number of needed trainers and the actual attacker effectiveness are being kept obscure by Niantic), inability to re-enter when the raid has expired, and the already mentioned raid bugs make raiding sometimes just a waste of time and raid passes.
9) The GBL reward structure incentivizes tanking. Giving rewards on the basis of how many matches have been won within a set instead of overall, coupled with matchmaking based instead on Elo and therefore (roughly) on overall match wins, pushes players to lose matches on purpose in order to win more when their Elo is artificially lower but rewards are higher because of Go Battle Days or just 4-1 being just so much better than 3-2, given the poor average quality of encounters.
10) Communication sucks. It's June 2023 and there is still no way a new player can figure out that at the end of each GBL season the star piece has to be activated before clicking on Battle. And the same goes for a lot of in-game mechanics that can only be figured out by reading a lot of posts here or by trial and error. In addition, often the official blog and even Niantic support give wrong information.
1) The gym system is stupid. Instead of being competitive (actual battles for gym control among the three teams, with appropriate rewards) or cooperative (before the 2017 gym "reform", players from the same team could "power up" a gym by "training" in a raid-like way), it is just a race to who gets the first 6 spots in an empty gym without any effort (or with variable effort only by the first player) and then hoping that someone from the opposing team kicks out your "defender" after more than 8 hours but possibly every day, but not from all gyms but only one gym a day. Or just multiaccounting (ToS violation) and do it all yourself.
2) Too much focus on Saturdays and Sundays. For me it's a major problem, but I can understand the reason. However I'm around more often Monday to Friday than on weekends, so it's annoying that CDs, raid days and special research events (which are by the way the shortest and the ones that shouldn't be missed) fall on days when I'm not so flexible.
3) Too many pointless time sinks. Pointless animations when fighting gyms, pointless 120-second lobby when soloing a low-tier raid, pointless animations for buddy feeding, pointless need for AR when AR is not functional to the game, pointless Rocket rewards screens, etc.
I'm thankful to the Silph Road Team (moderators, scientists, researchers, and everyone else) and to the PoGoRaids Team (moderators, draft leaders, and everyone else) and to both TheSilphRoad and pogoraids communities because they have made this not-so-short phase of my playing life more enjoyable despite Niantic.

What promped me to quit the game for good
1) The first frustration was when Master Premier Classic was removed. Master Premier Classic was my best GBL league, I had a well-balanced team (Togekiss - Snorlax - Swampert) that I knew very well and brought me twice to Veteran. Now, to be equally competitive in Master Premier XL, I needed hundreds of XL candies for my team, which were basically locked behind events and trading. That is, easy for people flexible enough to play when Niantic wants, and easy for multiaccounters, but hard for legit players with work and family obligations like me.2) Then in March I felt for the umpteenth time the rush to remove Frustration exactly in that week because it's just one week (or less) every three months, and not even with a fixed calendar.

Gift sending/opening, buddy hearts, Frustration/CDs/events that force you to do something specific at set dates/times... Minor problems
This above was enough to make me quit. But we also have some minor problems that would be nice to be solved because they are additional nuisances:1) The gym system is stupid. Hi All. I (37m) spent the first 15 years of my working life in restaurants and really enjoyed it; serving, bartending, cooking - I just loved the energy and pace of it, and I myself love good food from quality ingredients. During this time I earned a BA in Geography & Urban Studies here in Philadelphia, then once the kids came I moved into construction and am now an assistant project manager at a small electrical company. I earn $72k a year so salary is acceptable, but this industry sucks. Ever since Covid disrupted the supply chain, this industry has gotten ruthless and I don't enjoy it. Not to mention, the typical folk in this industry are just unrelatable to me. I really want out, but I don't know what to do. I started taking some IT courses at the local community college but I'm getting cold feet because of how saturated that industry is with graduates seeking entry-level positions. Not to mention the pay cut would be roughly 15% and there's no guarantee of advancing out of helpdesk.
When I consider moving back into the restaurant industry, I can't shake the negative of working in the evenings and weekends, which is the reason I left in the first place. With young kids, I'd hate to miss out on my time with them.
What would you suggest I consider? I'm content in pursuing an associates degree for an occupation with upward mobility. One person I spoke with suggested Accounting. Another suggested Business... as of now, I'm considering sticking through it while taking some business classes, then starting my own cafe..... Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

I’m a 24f who has been in retail management in a decently competitive area for about five years. I started as a keyholder at a department store with an inventory of over 2.5m and in two years became the assistant manager. Last August, I made the choice to take a pay decrease and switch companies to one with a better career development plan and thankfully it has worked out. I started as a department manager, then five months in was promoted to day support, and a month later accepted a ASM contract.At 24 I am now on salary as an assistant manager for the overnight fulfillment team. I am extremely in love with merchandising, and being the voice of my team. I take a lot of pride in my job, and often pull 10-12 hour shifts. However I am beginning to struggle with how physical this current position is. I know there are other management positions with less physical requirements like front end but I hate the tedious paperwork that comes with it. I am just wondering what other careers my current skills could be transferable into. I am looking at pursuing a college education as I jumped immediately into work after high school.

The brave remote shores of the beach next to peaks of Mount Silwan had braved more than they showed on their brow. A local fisher, who most people around him considered as polite as a perched peacock, noticed a foundation stone with a marking that made him think of the taste of his wife’s cooking when she was not in a particularly pleasant mood.
The foundation stone was textured and rough to the touch, and from the perspective of a sparrow soaring high, it seemed of colors ranging from a vibrant crimson to a bottle-green with a hint of blueberry blue.
There was something unique about it—to the fisher, it looked like a hedgehog tumbling around, attempting to imitate a rolling tumbleweed in the Hami desert.
On one fine day, a day which did not seem at all different from any other summer day, the village, the beach, and the entire mount Silwan were wiped out completely.
It was all because of a mistake or rather a series of mistakes which occurred even though they had the minimal probability of occurrence—a probability which was lower than that of a group of Monkeys writing a book about a group of monkeys writing a sonata in the style of Shakespeare.
This story is about that mistake which has no relation to the bad cooking or the fisher, but is linked intrinsically to that Foundation Stone and its weird origin.

Zhavi Mastermind felt the cold Himalayan air cut through him as he gritted his teeth and stayed determined. The task he came here for was worth all the effort and care he showed it. Being a software architect working for a start-up focused on mapping the universe, Zhavi had made himself enough money to pay for his travels and more. He could probably afford hired help. But then knowledge was precious, especially information which could lead to unlimited success or even world domination or more. Besides, he needed to have a tiny footprint. The more people with him, the easier it would have been for anyone to spot his operation. And then someone could interfere. Besides, he wouldn’t want even his hired help to know details about his plan. There was too much at stake here. So, he followed the only option for him that seemed right—he had to work under the radar.
His trip so far had been short and mostly sweet. As he had traveled all the way here, there had been a few hiccups here and there, but overall, it had been event-free. Most people recognized him as a tourist, so it made him easy to be ignored.
The night before had been tiring, as he had set up camp here. To a casual visitor, it would appear that Zhavi had set up his base simply because it seemed the right place. He had planned every step of the way. This was the place to be. It was around 30 feet from the target, which made it easy for him to set up a personal area network which had a range of up to 33 feet.
He targeted the place where a power surge had been detected and ignored. As he sat down waiting, he recalled how he had discovered it truly by chance. He had been working with data from a reconfigurable radio telescope and found a powerful signal—a signal which could only have been signifying intelligent life. As he analyzed, he found out that the source was not from any other place but a place in the Himalayan region in Northern Pakistan some distance from the base camp of one of the most formidable peaks, “Nanga Parbat.”
The encryption that he had cracked had been eye-shattering. Initially expecting it to be some boring secret communication by a government, it had shocked him to see the communication in a language beyond anything that existed on the planet. A higher dimensional language, so to speak, with words with meanings which were impossible to decipher for mere humans. Each word lay in the cross section of concepts. As Zhavi explored, he used brute force decryption with the help of resources from a global public super-computing facility to discover the meanings. And what he found was truly astounding. There were historical, cultural, and geographical references in the signals. It was impossible to understand them without taking notes on each of them. The problem, however, was that none of them were from Earth and that’s when he realized he had to get here.
The data scientists ignored the signal as an outlier even though it had been detected once. As Zhavi dug deeper, he found another incident over two decades back.

If he could find it, someone else could find it too. So, it was now or never.
Zhavi authenticated and opened the shiny black box. Inside, lights were turning off and on as he flipped the switches. Screens around him lit as his custom designed distributed operating system booted up and synched.
A soft voice said, “Your secure Personal area network is now operational.”
“Turn on the security system.”
“Security system turned on. Cameras operational. Lasers are operational and looking for targets.”
Zhavi was a pacifist. He would always tell himself he never believed in violence. But he just hated to be disturbed. He was, however, also a realist. He realized the need for sacrifices for some causes. And that sometimes extreme measures need to be taken to attain success. If there was any such day in his life where he should never be disturbed, it was today.
As he listened to the whirring lasers and the automated drones guarding his position and looking for intruders, he focused his cameras on the approximate location where he thought the item should appear and waited. Everything seemed to be fine.
A sudden, blinding flash of light caused Zhavi to flinch in surprise. He took a step back, his eyes widening in wonder as he tried to grasp the magnificence of the object in front of him.
“Dr. GB, Dr. GB, sir, you need to see this. You have a letter.”
“I have a what?”
“A letter, sir.”
“How is it possible? You know, girl, your brain gone mad. We don’t even have an address. How can somebody send us a letter in the middle of nowhere? It’s the Congo river, not some small lake, Mary.”
“Sir, I assure you it’s for you. I just found it on the porch outside.”
It was a hot day, like many other days in Congo, as Dr. GB Smith sat on his reclining chair in one corner of the makeshift hut that he called his lab. He lazily eyed the plump woman standing near the door, her bright clothing standing out in the shadows.
“Why are you standing over there?”
“Sir, you didn’t let me come in.”
“It’s just a lab.”
“Sir, the last time I tried coming in, that fish thing you have in there. It shocked me.”
“Aha, the eel. You should be proud, Mary. You should tell your grandchildren an eel struck you.”
“Sir, I doubt I’ll have any children or even get married if I keep working for you.”
“It’s not that dangerous, Mary. Be brave.”
“Sir, it’s not about just the place being dangerous. Of course, there are no safety procedures or anything. The real problem is that you don’t pay me. It’s not like you paid me some months of salary and then got late with just one. You haven’t paid me anything. So, if I don’t die after being bitten by one of these things that you keep here in this lab, I think I’ll probably die of starvation. To let you in on a little secret, I am probably only surviving because I am living with my parents.”

As he eyed her, Mary stood still, looking unconvinced by Dr. GB’s invitation or even his attempts at humor, which she probably considered at least distasteful. Her one hand was on the door, with the other holding something with just one foot inside the lab.
GB scratched his white beard, trying to keep up with his planned expression of an air of disinterest, and looked into her eyes. “So? Aren’t you going to give it to me?”
The girl first looked on both sides and then ran towards him. Before he could say anything, the letter was flying on top of him as he masterfully apprehended it on its way to the side.
He said, “So we are all set, right? You are telling me you are fine. Not starving and still alive. Every day, this is just what every animal in the river can wish for.” He looked up only to find her running away towards the door.
GB sighed. As much as he didn’t want to show it, he was worried. This was the third one this year, and he was running out of candidates. Mary had tolerated him for a period far longer than the previous ones.
As he looked at the letter, he felt the texture of the wax seal beneath his fingertips. His eyes opened wide.

I am getting another raise soon since I just passed the PTCE exam (unknown amount). My annual raise will only be $0.27. I don't expect to go over $14.00-$14.10/hr after everything.
Here are my opportunities:
1) The retail competition starts its uncertified technicians at $16/hr, so with my PTCB certification, I may make a little more. Pros: Better pay. Close friend works there. Associated with my university. Heard training is better. Workflow seems more efficient. Cons: 30-minute drive. It is a busier location (however, more help is available).
2) Another retail pharmacy, specifically one inside of a membership warehouse club. Estimated pay to be anywhere from $17-24/hr. Pros: Better pay. 14-minute drive. Gas station is right in the parking lot. Cons: Don't know too much about it.

I'm 34 F, married, no kids. I have been in retail for over 15 years and I hated it.
My husband runs a small, successful family business, his success allowed me to return to college, I finished both my associate of art and associate of science degrees, I decided to pursue a career in medical lab science; it seemed like something I could do well, appealed to my introvert nature and would provide a salary I could be proud of.
For the past 3 semesters I have been working on finishing out my prerequisites; it was very slow going because I was only taking 2 classes per semester & working full time at my retail job.
This year in January I made the choice to quit my job and focus all my time and energy on school. One week into the semester I tore my ACL & both menisci and had to attend my classes via zoom. Almost exactly 3 weeks after that I was rushed to the ICU with massive pulmonary embolisms . I underwent 2 emergency surgeries and spent 9 days in the ICU fighting for my life (this isn't meant to be a sob story, I swear).
While in the ICU I withdrew from my university; it may have been a rash decision but, I figured if I didn't die I would be too busy with my physical recovery (estimated at ~6 months) to continue my studies, and I still haven't had corrective surgery on my knee.
Now I've been home for a week and I spend a lot of time thinking about the future. I'm already 34, these new health issues will have me down for the better part of a year! I don't want to be in school forever, but I don't want to go back to retail or a crappy 25k/yr job.
I want to do something that makes me feel accomplished & allows me to contribute monetarily to our life.
I have a lot of "hobbies" but nothing that I feel I could turn into a career.
Am I doomed to be a 40 yr old student or work retail for the rest of my life? Have any of you had a similar situation?
