2023.06.02 16:24 EventideGamesStudio How Do Solo Game Developers Make Video Games?

Hello Everyone!
How Do Solo Game Developers Make Video Games?
TL;DR
The process solo developers go through to build a game breaks down into 6 phases: Idea, Prototype, Iteration, Polish, Release, and Post-Release. Each phase impacts the game in a specific way.
  1. Idea: Have an idea for a game to create.
  2. Prototype: Build a small, quick, playable version of the game that reflects the game’s core idea.
  3. Iteration: Assemble and expand on the game’s core gameplay loop.
  4. Polish: Integrate extra details that make the game pop and stand out.
  5. Release: Share the game for others to play.
  6. Post-Release: Expand, Maintain, or leave the game as is.
This post is a direct copy from my website here.
Let’s jump right into it!
How do solo game developers make video games? Game development is a large topic to cover with many nuances. Today, we’ll walk through the process that solo game developers go through to develop the game itself.
Why is this important for solo game developers to understand this process?
Like the gaming industry, you have limited resources. Your time. Your money. Your effort. Your skills. Unlike the industry though, you are the driving force behind your game. You are responsible for everything. Marketing. Business. Art. Engineering. Building the game itself is a tiny part of the process. But, it is the core of the entire process.
How does the gaming industry build games? It breaks down into 6 phases:
Where does the game fit into each of these phases? Which ones are specific to the game themselves? These are vague and we can do better. Let’s break it down further.
Here’s how each of the 6 game industry phases relate to the game itself:
  1. Idea -> Idea
  2. Pre-Production -> Prototype
  3. Production -> Iteration
  4. Post-Production -> Polish
  5. Release -> Release
  6. Post-Release -> Post-Release
Let’s walk through each one of these game phases.

Idea

The idea is the thought or scenario for a game. This is the backbone and vision for the game. The more catchy, fun, and original it is, the better. The goal of this phase is to have an idea that you build a game off of.
It can come from anywhere: video game, board game, personal background, an experience, your brain, random idea generator, AI, players, friends, a team, group of people, family, etc.
The game idea we are going to use throughout this blog is for a survival crafting game.

Prototype

A prototype is the smallest, quickest, playable version of the game that reflects the game’s core idea. The goal of this phase is two fold: Build the prototype and decide whether this prototype is worth growing into a full game.
Let’s elaborate on the definition of what makes up the prototype.
Smallest
Smallest meaning you only want the core game elements present in the prototype.
How do you do this?
Start by disassembling the game idea into its core gameplay loop. A gameplay loop contains the main tasks that the player will be doing throughout the game.
In a survival crafting game, the core gameplay loop would look like this: gather resources, craft items and weapons, defeating enemies, and repeat.
The next step is to break down each task into systems that make the task possible. Then, you build those systems.
For example, to gather a wood resource, what systems do you need to get wood? Here’s a few you would need:
  1. To get wood from a tree, you need a tree to exist. Build a tree.
  2. How do you interact with the tree? You need to hit it. Need a system to contain a way to trigger actions with the keyboard and mouse. Then, you need to use that system to trigger actions like hit. You need a system on a tree to recognize the hits from you.
  3. How does the tree know when to turn into wood? When it’s destroyed, after 3 hits. Then, you’ll need the tree to have a health system.
  4. How do you get to the tree? You need to move to it. Need a player controller for the player to move around.
  5. Once you get the wood, how do you pick it up? Need a pick up system to pick up nearby resources.
  6. Once you pick up the wood, where is it stored? Need an inventory system to track the wood you’ve picked up.
You continue this process with each task until you have gone through each one.
Quick & Playable
We want a fast way to play and test out these tasks and the game itself. The two ways to do this are with a physical prototype or with a digital prototype.
The physical prototype is building the pieces and components that make up the game. Then, using them to interact with rules (which are in your head) and the environment. This method is quick and tangible. Unfortunately, it doesn’t scale well. It doesn’t work for all games (like our survival crafting game). You’ll need to convert it into a digital format anyway for the rules, systems, etc.. It’s hard to share and get feedback. For these reasons, solo developers favor the digital prototype.
The quickest way to create a playable digital prototype is with a game engine.
What is a game engine?
It’s a software tool embedded with many features and functionality that you build your game on top of. A good way to think about it is with an analogy: a game engine to a game is what a foundation is to a house. They are convenient, powerful, and ready to use (little to no setup required).
If you are new to game development, use a game engine. Picking one is a whole topic in itself. Depends on:
  1. What matters to you (e.g. support, tutorials, asset store, open source)
  2. What kind of game you’re building (e.g. 2D vs. 3D, pixel art vs realistic)
  3. Your skills and experience you have (e.g. programming).
Do your research and pick one. Don’t think about it too long.
Reflects the game’s core idea
Are you building systems related to the game idea and the game you want to make? If so, keep it. Else, drop it.
Using our survival crafting game example, a system to transition from day to night and back is nice. But, the game doesn’t depend on it.
This also includes the art. Use simple images for 2D and basic shapes, like spheres, capsules and cubes, for 3D. Remember we want small, quick and playable. This also avoids scope creep, a process of adding features until the game it’s too big and too complex to finish.
When you finish the prototype, it’s going to feel underwhelming to play.
Why is that? We have expectations.
First, we have expectations of ourselves. We know we can do better.
Second, we have expectations based on the games we’ve played. We’ve had great experiences and memories playing these amazing feeling and looking games. This prototype is not that.
This is 100% normal.
Remember the end goal of the prototype phase: decide whether to transform this prototype into a full game.
Deciding this is up to you and your goals. Is it fun? Does it offer a different and unique experience? Play around with it. Explore the space of the game idea. Don’t be afraid to experiment. This is when you should share it with people and get their thoughts with a playtest. As this blog relates to development of the game itself, we are going to skip it right now and move on to the iteration phase.

Iteration

This is when you start to build up the game. You will spend a majority of your time here assembling and expanding the core gameplay loop. You’ll work on elements of the game that not only add breath but also depth.
For our survival crafting game example, during this phase you might do the following:
  1. Make more enemies (Zombies, Raiders, Mercenaries)
  2. Add more resources to gather (rock, metal)
  3. Make more weapons (swords, throwing knives, guns)
  4. Create more items (first aid kits, pickaxe, torch)
  5. Expand crafting to make interesting weapons and items (bottle + gas + cloth = molotov cocktail)
  6. Create puzzles to complete (Need key to unlock safe, solve riddle to find rare resources)
  7. Start a progression system or skill tree (Learn to craft more items, enhance melee abilities)
  8. Make more levels (dense green forest, snowy mountain, dry arid desert)
  9. Incorporate art assets (rocks, trees, buildings, first aid kits, swords, guns, zombies, birds, bears, etc.)
  10. Create a menu with settings (audio, video, gameplay)
  11. In-Game UI
  12. Day and Night Cycle
  13. Hunger, Stamina & Hydration system
  14. Interesting enemy AI (enemies maneuver in groups, find cover, attack with different weapons, reposition themselves)
  15. Narrative (why are you trying to survive?)
  16. Vehicles (Cars, motorcycles)
A key part of this phase (as the title suggests) is to iterate. Build. Test. Analyze. Repeat.
Build a system or improve an aspect of the game. Test to make sure it works. Analyze if it improves the game and aligns with the game’s idea. If it does, great! Move to the next thing. If not, why not? Was it not fun? Hard to use? Decide whether to improve it, shelve it or drop it.
With your time, effort and dedicated focus, the game will grow. It will morph into the game you are expecting. The game may scratch the itch but is not satisfying. It’s missing that extra umph that makes it special and impactful. This is where polish comes in.

Polish

Polish is the process of making the game look pretty, feel good to play, and elevate it to the next level. An important step before beginning the polish phase is that the game should be close to finished. Adding more content, systems and assets into the game puts you back into the iteration phase. Polish can be a distraction if done too early.
What do you do during this phase then? Integrate those extra details that make the game pop.
Using our survival crafting game example, this could include but is not limited to:
  1. Ambient sounds (water flowing, birds chirping)
  2. Music (tense music when an animal chases you, cheerful music when walking through a meadow, creepy music when walking around in the dark)
  3. Sound effects (firing a gun, chopping a tree, walking on rocky terrain, “oof” and “uggs” when taking damage)
  4. Particles (gun’s muzzle flash, wood chunks fly off of trees when hit, smoke rising from a fire)
  5. Post-processing (red bloody outline on screen when getting hit, chromatic aberration when feeling woozy)
  6. Screen shake (gentle sway when running, violent shake when taking damage)
  7. Visual effects (grenade explosions, x-ray vision)
  8. Animations (squash & stretch, player running, UI Transitions)
At this point, the game should look, feel and play like the game idea you had to begin with. If it doesn’t, that’s ok. Go back to the iteration phase to add content or keep adding polish. It’s rare to get it right the first time. Take a few passes through the iteration and polish phase to get it where you want it and are happy with it. Don’t be afraid to get feedback from others too.
Once you feel it’s ready, the next step is to put it into the player’s hands. Releasing it.

Release

Congrats, you’ve made it to the end! 🥳 Time to let the game shine and let your players play it. Releasing your game means to share it online for players to access it by put it on a marketplace.
For PC, a few locations are Steam, itch.io and Epic Games. For Mobile, there is the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. For consoles, there is Sony’s Playstation Store, Microsoft’s Xbox Store and Nintendo’s Store & eShop.

Post-Release

You finished the game. Where do you go from here? There are three options: Expand it, Maintain it, or Leave it as-is.
You can expand the game using updates or Downloadable Content (or DLC). This could be adding more to the game that you couldn’t fit or didn’t have time to put in before release.
Examples for our survival crafting game could be:
  1. Additional guns
  2. Cosmetic upgrades
  3. More game modes (like playing as an animal and hunting the player)
  4. A level editor
  5. Mod support
  6. New levels (like an abandoned metropolitan area.
You can maintain the game through bug fixes to improve the current player’s experience.
Examples could be:
  1. Prevent visual glitches
  2. Stopping enemies running through walls
  3. Fix the save system
  4. Prevent item duplication
  5. Fix the inventory
You could leave it as-is. The game is what it is. You get what you get and that’s it. No planned updates, fixes or DLC.
It depends on you, your goals and your time. It’s up to you on what to do next.

Summary

The process solo developers go through to build a game breaks down into 6 phases: Idea, Prototype, Iteration, Polish, Release, and Post-Release. Each phase impacts the game in a specific way.
  1. Idea: Have an idea for a game to create.
  2. Prototype: Build a small, quick, playable version of the game that reflects the game’s core idea.

  4. Polish: Integrate extra details that make the game pop and stand out.
  5. Release: Share the game for others to play.
  6. Post-Release: Expand, Maintain, or leave the game as is.
I hope this provided a sneak peek behind the curtain of game development.

2023.06.02 16:16 Jackelopes219 Brad Stevens deserves blame for Mazzula & the team's failures.

I understand that most of you still love Brad for what he did for the organization as coach, but let's not forget that this is still Danny's team. All of your favorite Celtics players are Danny's guys, not Brad's (besides White). Brad hired a rookie head coach in back-to-back seasons for a win-now team (Poor decision). He traded a first round pick for Brogdon, who has a huge contract, when we are already stacked on guards, and desperately need more bigs/rebounding/toughness (Bad decision). He did not sufficiently extinguish JB for KD trade rumors last offseason, which partially alienated JB & I believe had a negative effect on him mentally this season (Poor decision). He traded another pick for Mike Muscala, who was also a non-factor, when it's obvious that we are going to need to re-tool through the draft as the new CBA & salary cap restrictions arise (Poor decision). He also allowed Joe to entirely eliminate Pritchard & Grant Williams from the rotation for a majority of this season/playoffs, alienating Pritchard, tanking his value to the team, and his value as a future trade asset (Poor decision).
Mazzula failed to emphasize defense and reports have been recently coming out that Smart & Horford were typically the ones assigning defenses and coverages during timeouts. "Mazzula Ball" aka "stand around the 3pt line and have JT & JB run iso's with no movement," is insanely hard to do when a well-coached defense keys in on that and double teams our best two players. You can't blame Joe because he is inexperienced, but he never should have been coach in the first place. We aren't in a position to allow a coach to figure it out on the fly, we are a championship contender. We have one the best rosters in the league, easily a top-3 roster, and Joe couldn't figure it out. He shouldn't be kept as head coach, we need veteran leadership and don't need to retain a coach simply because it would be lame to fire him.
Joe should be relegated to assistant coach and in a few years he can lead the charge again, once he's sufficiently experienced, and learned how to coach under a veteran. The guy essentially has no coaching experience compared to other coaches in the NBA, it's literally inarguable. He was 4th in line last year and largely failed this year. Again, this isn't on Joe, this is on Brad, and I have little confidence in him as a GM, and would have preferred for him to stay on as coach.

2023.06.02 16:15 afa00 Forgive My Excitement

Many of you have seen my posts here for the last several months. Thank you for your patience and your kind replies. My family are from the US. Between 2000 and 2009 my wife and I lived together abroad twice, but the arrival of kids and a very tight budget meant that it was domestic travel only vacations for us since that time. Mostly by car.
This year, a series of events conspired to allow us to travel internationally and we settled on Belize. I went on this sub and found out that our trip of six days six days/five nights was not enough so we talked on two more days. Still not enough, I know, but all we could manage.
So we are leaving for Belize this coming weekend and I’m super excited. I get all nerdy and giddy when I travel. I want to know as much as I can about the culture and people and try to do gather as much of the country into that trip as I can. Sadly, we are spending our time only in SI/Cayo and San Pedro/Caulker in our limited time. Next time (🤞🏼) we will do the north and south (looking w teay eyes at you, Hopkins & Placencia 🥹).
But sincere thanks to you all for induldging my earnest, random, and ignorant questions. So, here are some questions that have been swirling around my brain. None are dire. But I thought, I’d stick them up here to see if they might find some answers here and there from anyone with the tile, patience, and inclination to do so.
So, random questions:
  1. How much cash should we have on hand each day (3 in Cayo and 4 on Ambergris/Caulker) I know smaller bills are preferable, but I’ve only seen bits and pieces on some threads on this sub.
  2. You take one (packable) food ingredient back to the US with you from Belize. Something that will make cooking better back home. What is it?
  3. What run do I need to take home and where do I get it. I heard about Traveler’s 81? I like sipping a good sipping rum.
  4. What drink do I need to try at what bar, restaurant, whatever in Caulker, San Pedro, or San Ignacio? If you make the best drink in those towns, I’ll come over if invited! 😂😂
  5. If you’ve traveled to Belize and returned to your home country, what is something that you have that reminds you of your trip? Besides the wonderful memories?
  6. Guide at Xunantunich? Or just explore?
  7. I’ve heard the jungles are surprisingly mosquito free. Is that true? Especially this time of year (early June)?
  8. Is Belize a culture that barters at markets? Or is a price a price? To looking to score on a vendor. Just want to understand the culture. Thinking of street vendors selling non-food and market in SI.
  9. Tipping culture in Belize?
  10. Hot and humid day when going to guided tour at ATM. Pants still preferred given the journey (scrapes and cuts on rocks etc)?
OK. I think I’ve got it out of my system. But I might come back for more!!!

2023.06.02 16:14 timmieb Looking for people in SF/F just going about their lives.

Currently, I am reading Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree and I have recently stumbled upon the Solar Clipper series. While both are focused on characters building a business, that is not needed. I do like the relaxed pace of these books, with little to no conflict, just people in SciFi or Fantasy going about their lives. Any tips in that particular subgenre?

2023.06.02 16:12 SmilingCatSith Ttrpg game episodes

The boys today talked about how have been floating around having a table top rpg session as an episode so let’s generate some food for thought for Bob since he sometimes descends to the subreddit and ask the subreddit what games are actually fun to play in the time crunch they would need to play it in? Following that since there’s supposed to be a winner any thoughts on fun conditions to win/ideas for plots where there is a winner? I don’t use discord so if this post makes a golden egg feel free to share)
My two cents are Lasers & Feelings and powered by the apocalypse styled games such as monster of the week if they want it a little crunchier. However there are 1 page oneshot dungeons/adventures for Dnd floating around like Bob mentioned but I don’t have any saved up to conveniently hand out at the moment.
Addition thoughts for dnd include
1.is that they should speed run a low lvl adventure module with max lvl characters possibly even letting the boys read ahead the night before and try to out meta game each other to reach the end/goal first.
  1. They have someone dm a oneshot wacky race and it’s whoever is closest/farthest along the track before the episode ends.

Whether I'm out with my bike touring pannier setup, or I'm hiking with my 70L pack; carrying hammock, bugnet, tarp and TWO sleeping bags is just too much bulk.
I have a Ticket to the moon original hammock and the moonquilt. The moonquilt zips up at the ends and has a little hook on top so you can wrap yourself sort of like a cocoon. Is this meant so that you won't need a sleeping bag/blanket?
I'd love to get any input and tips, I've only been hammocking once and got way too cold at night. I've since gotten a much warmer sleeping bag and a UL 1-man tent, sort of accepted the idea of only hammocking in the summer which is like 2-3 months here. Or if I were to travel south.

2023.06.02 16:11 UnluckyRabbit9238 My sister and I don't like each other and it's honestly sad.

My sister (16F) and I (18F) don't get along at all. This is honestly saddening as we used to be best friends when we were 3 & 5 but things just changed after we hit puberty. I started getting annoyed at her cuz she'd always want to hang out with me and my friends and she'd get annoyed at me for the same things. We always moved from country to country so we've sort of been each other's best friend for a while. Obviously, there were times when I wanted to never see her again and vice versa.
Lately, however, my sister has become cruel. Yesterday, my university acceptances came in and unfortunately, I got waitlisted by my top choice but my rank is so low it's essentially hopeless. Obviously, I started crying because I worked really hard towards achieving this and didn't get admitted. Instead of comforting me or at least feeling bad for me, my little sister simply said "I knew you couldn't do it" and laughed in my face about getting wait listed. This ended with her getting yelled at by my mother.
I honestly think that behaviour is disgusting and I haven't done anything to warrant that kind of cruelty from her. I've always been there for her when she needed me, even when we were in a fight. I comforted her when she did horribly on her mock exams by getting her McDonald's and tutored her.
I'm not going to sit here and claim I'm the best sister ever but I'm certainly not the worst.
Lately, my sister has just been resenting me a lot. I think it's because the attention has been on me for the past few months because of my final exams, high school graduation and university acceptances. because of that, she does everything she can to get the attention off me and onto her, wether said attention is good or bad.
A few years ago, she ripped my favourite limited edition book (my most prized possession at the time) because the boy she liked had a crush on me even though I didn't even know who he was. I was very heartbroken because that thing was so expensive and my parents just urged me to forgive her because she's young and doesn't know any better and even blamed me for "stealing" the guy she liked. Again, I had no idea who this boy was and had never even spoken to him.
More recently, she's been telling me that I'm going to fail my finals and not get into university and just awful things like that. She's also been commenting on my weight a lot, saying she'd hate herself if she was as fat as me even though I'm at an average weight and just been awful all around.
I know that usually, it's the older sibling's fault if they don't get along with their siblings because they mistreated them but I haven't done anything notably awful to her.
I really don't know if this is my fault or just her being awful. Like I don't know maybe she's resented me ever since I didn't want her to hang out with me and my friends cuz I've heard that really impacts people when they grow older.

2023.06.02 16:10 MacBelieve Island loop vent merging with drain

First time dealing with plumbing as a homeowner beyond installing fixtures and I'm really trying to understand this scenario. Please help!
I have had 3 plumbers come by and bid on plumbing a kitchen island sink. All three plumbers described the loop vent to me where the loop would fold back into the drain line and the run between that connection and an existing drain/vent would be a single 2" pipe rather than a separate dry vent pipe going all the way to the roof.
All diagrams I see online of a loop vent require a separate connection to the vent that is 6" above the sink fixture, but there is some discussion of a "wet-vent" being allowed. Looking at the 2015 IPC, this is what I see relevant to kitchen island sink venting
916.2 Vent connection. The island fixture vent shall connect to the fixture drain as required for an individual or common vent. The vent shall rise vertically to above the drainage outlet of the fixture being vented before offsetting horizontally or vertically downward. The vent or branch vent for multiple island fixture vents shall extend to a point not less than 6 inches (152 mm) above the highest island fixture being vented before connecting to the outside vent terminal
916.3 Vent installation below the fixture flood level rim. The vent located below the flood level rim of the fixture being vented shall be installed as required for drainage piping in accordance with Chapter 7, except for sizing. The vent shall be sized in accordance with Section 906.2. The lowest point of the island fixture vent shall connect full size to the drainage system. The connection shall be to a vertical drain pipe or to the top half of a horizontal drain pipe. Cleanouts shall be provided in the island fixture vent to permit rodding of all vent piping located below the flood level rim of the fixtures. Rodding in both directions shall be permitted through a cleanout.
To me, this reads as either option being OK as long as the pipes are sized correctly. But it also requires additional cleanouts to meet code if tieing the vent back into the drain line before getting to the vertical vent pipe.
Can you all help me understand this?

2023.06.02 16:10 anchordwn Conflicted about moving back in with my mom.

I'm 25 years old, and last spring I made the decision to move out of state. I had lived on my own before, but when I made this choice I was living with my mom. I moved three states and 10 hours away, and got a job using my degree that I had never used before. I miss my friends. I miss my family. I have some family in this state but none I'm super close to. But it's mostly the friends - I am a very social person, and living alone in a new state, new job, new place has been extremely lonely and isolating. I have made one pretty good friend over the last year but it's not the same at all (who is an object of my personality disorder, but I won't get into that. The short is I have BPD and this person is taking the "favorite person" role in that). I miss my large social circle back home. It is making me depressed.
Honestly I had been considering it for awhile, but the nail in the coffin was spending memorial day with those hometown friends. I knew I missed them / was homesick, but that made it SO much worse.
I like the company I work for but I hate my job. It is my first in office job post graduation, and I have realized that I dislike the field I decided to go into when I was 18 and picking a college major. I hate office work, which I know isn't an unpopular opinion, but I felt so much more fufilled when I was doing my old job - which was bartending, which I had been doing since I was 18. I was making GREAT money (for bartending, I think the last year I did it I was gonna pull about 45k part time at a big nightclub in my city).
I have recently considered moving back in with my mom. I want to be around people I know again. I want to go back to bartending. I contacted my boss from my old nightclub job & told him what I'm considering. He told me that whenever I move, let him know and he will put me back on the schedule that day. He even made a facebook post on the bar's account to let people know I'll be back in a few weeks (even though I didn't say for sure, lol). I'm super conflicted, though.
Pros: Save money, be around friends and family again. Go back to job that actually made me happy. New career change, maybe start bartending full time and doing that as a career. go back to therapist that I had been seeing for years.
Cons: Massive paycut. Will miss my one friend a lot. Feel like I'm failing by not being able to stay in the new place. Moving in with mom. I have an AMAZING townhouse that I will likely not be able to afford a comparable thing to in old place. COL is much higher there
Mom thinks I'm blowing it cause I'm leaving a high paying job and she thought I liked it here. And I do, but I'm also severely depressed on top of it.
I dunno what to do. Guess I just want some advice or to talk about it.
