They tried taking it to dealership and they said it could be like 5 things and they have no idea and only way to tell is fix something and see if it happens again.. they don’t want to waste the money to do that.. they said they have never seen this issue before?? It started happening towing, and today it happened just stopped at a stop light!! Dealership said camshaft sensor could be 1 issue? Anyone ever have something similar happen or have had this happen please let me know!! I have attached picture of the light! submitted by Krazie9 to MechanicAdvice [link] [comments] |

2023.06.04 01:24 gaslightanthemarias Balancing true off-road and highway capability in favor of off-road: Toyota or bust?
Location: USA, TX
Price range: $20k is the edge of actually affordable, <$15k would be much smarter and more comfortable. $30k max if I'm being as reckless with financing as most Americans these days.
Lease or Buy: Buy
New or used: Budget says used, but not 100% opposed to new with the state of the used market.
Type of vehicle: SUV preferred, open to small truck or crossovewagon.
Must haves: - 4WD w/ 4LO (or very robust AWD), 8in+ ground clearance, decent approach/breakovedeparture angles, full-size spare
- reasonable maneuverability (not super wide, decent turning radius).
- reasonable long-haul highway comfort/manners (cruise control, no death wobble or excessive wandering)
- room for 4 adults and their gear, good cargo space for extended camping, room to sleep in total area behind front seats
- buttons (not touchscreen) for key functions (climate, radio, lights, vehicle modes) full-size spare,
- acceptable fuel mileage (min 18mpg highway)
- decent visibility (no major blindspots, stupid big flat hood, tiny rear windshield, etc)
Desired transmission: Automatic preferred, manual not a total dealbreaker
Intended use: 50% of anticipated miles will be adventure trips w/ a partner or friends (ie 90% highway, 10% remote offroad). NOT intended for deliberate rock-crawling or hardcore wheeling, overlanding, etc.
Other 50% will be occasional grocery-getting, poor-weather commuting, and cross-town errands and socializing in a highway-heavy city with clogged arteries and narrow neighborhood roads.
At home, I want it to have good utility for giving friends rides, schlepping furniture and bikes, and being a reliable source of mobility in crises.
I DON'T need a typical commuter, and willing to accept compromises in efficiency as result. My "daily driver" is my bicycle, including for most local errands. Expecting 5-10k mi/year, majority highway.
Is this your 1st vehicle: Yes (but as a someone who has been driving for 15 years)
Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Fluids, pads, sparkplugs, pads, bulbs: yes. Intend to do more, so important for this work to be somewhat cheap/easy in a driveway context.
Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: Likely not anytime soon. Important for these systems to be dependable and not crazy expensive to have work done on.
Additional Notes: - Safety is important (people drive insane everywhere these days but especially my area, also many deehogs on expected trips).
- Real off-road capabilities needed for responsible, self-reliant travel in remote areas, but not in a recreational enthusiast way. Don't intend to make wheeling/overlanding a hobby or expect to have similarly-equipped friends to bail me out in these situations. Terrain including but limited to sandy arroyos, steep loose-rock. I don't want to be in a vehicle punching above its weight, I want to be in one that's in its element.
- Major weather events that I'd like the vehicle to handle reasonably well include: downpours on oil-slicked roads, and occasional ice and snow storms (generally with no plowing, salting, or sanding). I realize this points more to AWD and good tires for close-to-home usage.
- Renting a true 4WD vehicle only when I need it: No, in those situations I want it to be my vehicle that I know, trust, and am personally responsible for, and I don't want to deal with the additional logistics of renting.
Vehicles you've already considered: Initial bumpers: nothing larger than a 4-door short-bed Tacoma/Frontier, nothing smalleless capable than a Crosstrek.
Most likely contenders so far:
- Lexus GX 470
- + Full-time 4WD with Torsen seems like best of both worlds of 4WD/AWD for all of my adverse-condition capability desires
- + Probably the best-driving of the "trucks"
- + (y'all know the rest, I won't go too deep)
- - difficulty in finding affordable one in good shape
- - Efficiency of FT 4WD w/ v8
- - Honestly too fancy, I dislike most luxury trappings
- Toyota 4Runner (3rd-5th Gen)
- + 4Runner shit
- + Full-time 4WD found on a few select trims too (but probably too competitive of a market for me to seek them out)
- + Efficiency of V6 a bit better (don't think I need more really)
- - pretty rough around the edges for the price, not impressed with brakes in particular
- - Market is crazy, hard to justify vs value proposition of the GX
- - 5th Gen feels too big (esp wide)
- Subaru Outback (2010s+)
- + Perennial do-it-all underdog.
- + 5-10mpg better than the "trucks"
- - Worried that it just won't cut it for expected offroad (AWD losing power to wheelspin and low articulation, CVT issues), and the most capable versions (XTs, Wilderness) compromise efficiency, affordability, and repair costs/ease to the point of having no real advantage vs anything beefier.
- - Low ride-height not an asset on truck-filled Texas roads
- - "Car" advantages pretty minimal, feels closer to a unibody SUV.
- - Not super impressed by real-world reliability and cost/ease of repair of 2010s models
The Maybes:
- Nissan Xterra (2nd Gen)
- + More affordable version of GX/4R
- - ...but at a commensurate loss in reliability and comforts (especially vs GX). Out of production, and well-cared-for survivors seem rare.
- Toyota Tacoma (4-door, short bed)
- + It's a Taco
- - I can't really justify a truck bed (I know, I know, that hasn't stopped 95% of Tacoma owners before me), and would need a Softopper or camper shell to keep gear safe, and maybe also an extender to sleep inside a 4-door version.
- - A bit longer than I want for trails and parking lots
- Nissan Frontier
The Close-But-Probably-Nots:
- Toyota FJ Cruiser
- - trash visibility
- - Big exterior, small interior
- - Cult Following and Toyota Tax
- Other Subarus (Forester, Crosstek)
- + Better visibility/ride height (Forester)
- + Better maneuverability, angles (Forester, esp Crosstek)
- - Less cargo space (esp Crosstek)
- - Less powecapability
- - No real additional value proposition over Outback
- Jeeps (Wrangler Unlimited, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee)
- + Most efficient smaller 4WDs
- + Ease of maintenance
- - Reliability below my acceptable threshold for remote and solo
- - Wrangler too off-road focused for 1000mi+ roadtrips.
- Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, etc
- See Forester
- - below off-road capability threshold.
- Old stuff
- It seems like they stopped making what I really want in the mid-2000s. ~'95-'05 Cherokee XJ/ZJ, Pathfinder, Rodeo, Trooper, Montero, Sidekick, Tracker, etc. The few that are left often fit the budget, but with serious concerns about reliability, safety, and remaining life. Ultimately, I don't think I'd trust one of these long-distance or in the backcountry unless it was a really prime specimen (which is rare/expensive).
TL;DR: Please confirm that a 4Runner or GX is the only thing that really makes sense, than an Outback won't cut it, that I did good research, and that I look good in this dress. (Or please point out if I'm off-base or missing something) Thanks!

2023.06.03 21:49 GoForMe13 2015 Jeep Cherokee Brake Help
Hi There!
I’m a very lightly experienced car owner (read: I took auto shop in high school and know the absolute basics but make no claims on knowing all there is to know about my car).
I’ve had my 2015 Jeep Cherokee since it was new. I have about 133,000 miles on it. I feel like my brakes are wearing down/having issues more frequently than they should. My suspicion is that I keep winding up with cheaper brakes that wear faster (my rims are covered in black brake dust all the time).
Currently my front brakes shake a bit and have just started to squeak a bit, so I know it’s time to get some work done. The rotors were cut and pads replaced on my front brakes in Sept 2022 and those are the ones that have started squeaking now.
I’d like to buy a set of decent rotors and pads for my car to have my mechanic put on that won’t wear so easily.
So I’m looking for 2 things: 1. A recommendation for a decent brand of pads/rotors I can buy that won’t wear as quickly as the cheaper ones I’ve had. 2. Any thoughts on why my brakes might be wearing so quickly? (I realize this one is much tougher to diagnose but while I’m here I figured I’d ask).
Thanks in advance!

2023.06.03 20:42 beeeeenqueeen 2014 grand jeep Cherokee overheating issue.
been overheating for a year now , had thermostat replaced, still overheating, fill coolant, still overheats. this morning i put ac on a little during break then shut it off because the temp was almost all the way to top. then on way home from work i used the heat and it was up all the way and it dinged so i pulled over. this has been happening way too much in past week. my mechanic said he saw no leak, i’m going to try and get in with him so he can check it out. we are probably going to see if we can trade this bitch in because it is way too much work. Does anyone know what the issue may be? anyone have any similar experience with a good solution???

2023.06.03 13:35 TechnologyWest209 $190 to locate a rattle?
I recently had my 2022 Grand Cherokee serviced by a dealership in Rockwall, TX. I'll let you deduce which one it was. Anyhow, they replaced my fuel pump at 20K, performed an oil change and tire rotation. After leaving the shop, my wife started hearing a flapping noise, but we couldn't go back I picked up the vehicle after service was closed.
We looked everywhere for the flapping/rattling noise and came up empty. In addition, I noticed orange sludge in my coolant reservoir. So, I took it to a dealer in Terrell, TX. Again, I'll let you deduce which one. 2 days after dropping it off, they call me to say that they fixed the coolant issue under warranty, but that I owe them $190 for one hour of labor because they found a brand new sprinkler head, most likely picked up off the tollway, wedged in my suspension. As it wasn't a warranty issue, they are charging me at least an hour for their 4 hours of looking.
Long story short, is this a normal thing to charge people for? Especially given the fact that they have coupons on their website for free multipoint inspections and the other work was under warranty?

2014 Jetta 1.8tsi. I've got a horrible knock from my right strut over medium bumps/potholes. Planning on replacing them becuase they're still factory at 133k. How can I figure out if I've got 55mm or 70mm strut mounts? There's gotta be a better way to find out without removing the strut.

2023.06.03 05:55 misscanwenot Can I use an old tire as a spare?
I’m replacing all of my tires, I drive a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4WD. I also need to get a spare. Can I just use one of my old tires on a rim? My back tires have quite a good chunk of tread left, about 6/32 I’d say.
If I use it as a spare, how long would I be safe to drive on it without risking damaging something? Ideally I know I’d never drive on it long, but I am going on a 1,000 mile one way trip soon through the Rockies so I want to be prepared for worse case scenarios.

2023.06.03 05:32 MistyAvalon1234 Is this LC worth 35k?
| Hello, I've wanted a land cruiser for a while as an off road capable family hauler (multiple kids). 4 years ago, I gave up on finding one at a reasonable price and opted for a 2008 Armada which now has 140k miles and is still in good condition. A family member is looking to sell their 100% stock 2014 Land Cruiser with 178k miles for $35,000. They are offering first dibs to me and I am wondering if it's a good deal. Pricing websites (KBB, NADA guides) have the value around $31-33k. The high mileage concerns me a bit, as I am wondering what the useful remaining life really is. I am mechanically inclined enough to make minor repairs (struts, motor mounts, wheel hub), but I would like to avoid it in general since it would be the daily family hauler and I tend to take my time with DIY work. They are the original owner and say they DIY the maintenance. They generally baby the car: change with synthetic oil every 5k miles, premium fuel, replace tires well before necessary. There have been no repairs needed outside of regular maintenance of wear parts. Cosmetically, only a few scrapes and some road rash from mostly highway miles (they lived far from the city). It was a family hauler, but kids grew out of it about 3-4 yrs ago. Interior leather has no issues. Tires are in basically new condition. There was one low speed collision that led to minor rear bumper damage and the bumper was replaced by the dealership. It was not used for off roading ever; no off roading features were ever touched. The vehicle has been an Arizona car and if I bought it, it would remain an Arizona car -- so no rust. Biggest environmental issue is surviving the heat. What would you pay for this vehicle? How long do you think it could last? https://preview.redd.it/3l9rr59i3q3b1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6006c5863ea2e4c76f46233602bf113de6e58f3d submitted by MistyAvalon1234 to LandCruisers [link] [comments] |

2023.06.03 02:24 EstablishmentJust592 Coolant system issues, I’m frickin stumped y’all
Okay so I’ve posted a few times with issues before, and the problems keep coming. I’m at a loss. And need help.
2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport w/3.6L. Evidently at some point the fan shorted out and reversed its polarity so it was pushing, not sucking, air over the radiator, replaced it. Coolant temp sensor went out, got it replaced. Still overheating. Supposedly two different shops now have done compression tests, no cracked block or blown head gasket. Second shop replaced water pump, thermostat, and radiator cap, said it was fine after a couple hours of driving. Picked it up yesterday and it’s still running hot! I drove it home from the shop and it bobbled slightly off of midrange, but barely. Today on the way home it got up to 3/4 hot for the last 5 of a 28 mile commute and sat there, then the last 1/2 mile it began to climb past. But also, I noticed my heater doesn’t blow hot anymore and the fan takes a few seconds and a lot of button pushing to get it to come on. Any thoughts? The defrost button starts blinking now and it never did that before either.

Im currently looking at used cars and one of the options I’m looking at is a 2014 grand Cherokee. I’ve driven Honda CRV for so many years now but the Cherokee has me intrigued. I’m trying to do a bit of research before buying, what are people thoughts on how this model has kept up, any problems or complaints anyone has had. I’d be really interested to know! 2023.06.03 01:01 BluNautilus My car might be totaled out after an accident. Looking for a good replacement.
Got hit yesterday in my 2002 Grand Cherokee and it's 50/50 that insurance will total it out. I'm looking to replace it with something similar (mid-full size SUV) but newer and importantly, more reliable.
MUST BE:
- Reliable
- Not too large since I have to park on street
- 10k-15k in price (approximately)
NICE BUT NOT NECESSARY:
- Sunroof
- Room for large tires (off-roading ability)
VEHICLES I AM CONSIDERING:
- Toyota 4Runner (reliable from what I've heard, good off-roading ability)
- Chevrolet Tahoe (comfortable, big but not too large, and has a V8 option)
- Dodge Durango (comfortable and has a V8 option, least desirable on my list)
