2023.06.08 20:01 Lisianthus14 My party Vs trees

So I run wilderness survival campaign for my players, think combination of Elden ring and Hunger games. My players consistent of a warlock, a sorcerer, a barbarian, and a fighter. They knew going into the campaign that it was going to be dangerous for their PCs with lots of encounters, dangerous enemies, and wipderness survival with no towns/supplies. The players then got dropped into the endless wilds of the BBEG and the campaign began.
One of the things that we began to notice quickly was that it was not the enemies that would stump the PCs, it was the trees. The party had to cross a river and were attempting to chop down a tree to use as a bridge, well multiple nat 1s and failed strength checks later they had still not managed to cut down the tree. One of the players then decided that the best way to go across was to use the tree like a catapult and have someone climb up to the top, pull the tree down and let it go to catapult themselves over the river to the other side. More failed athletics checks for climbing followed and the idea was scrapped, the barbarian finally succeeded in chopping down the tree. They pulled the tree over to the river and realize that it only gets them half way across, they decide to risk it and jump the remainder of the distance. Barbarian, fighter and warlock make it over but the socrcrer has a -3 STR and-2 DEX and doesn't think he'll make it. The fighter jumps back over and ties a rope to the sorcerer with the barbarian holding the other side. Barbarian pulls the rope and gets a nat 20, sorcerer gets a nat 1 for the landing so the sorcerer gets yeeted off the log and flies face first into the mud of the swamp on the other side of the river. Thus began the sorcerers vendetta against trees.
Further along in the campaign the party needed to make their way from the coastline to a small island, they decided to make a raft out of tree trunks and a sail out of some animal skins that they had. The barbarian started chopping down trees and rolling them down to the beach while the sorcerer and warlock made the sail and the fighter lined up the logs to get them ready to be tied together. The barbarian starts cutting down every single tree not paying attention to whether they are the right size or not and tosses them down to the beach. Not looking at where he was throwing them the logs roll down and towards the sorcerer and warlock who were below. The fighter jumps in to try and stop the logs and rolls a nat 1, the logs roll over him and push him down the hill. The warlock succeeds on the saving throw and gets out of the way, but of course the sorcerer also gets a nat 1 so the fighter and sorcerer are pinned under the logs. The barbarian is stupid and continued to toss logs down burying the two other PCs until the warlock finally got his attention and told him to stop. Warlock helps the fighter and sorcerer get themselves out from under the logs. After this they semi succeeded in fashioning the logs into a raft, but the sorcerer has so much PTSD from trees at this point that he doesn't want to get on it. Finally after some convincing from the warlock and threats from the barbarian the sorcerer gets on the raft and they started to row it through the ocean.
These were some if the funniest unplanned for moments in this campaign os far and the whole table was dying the entire time throughout these tree escapades. I had no idea that in an Elden ring campaign containing chimeras, warebeasts, and dangerous fey my parties biggest enemy would be the stationary trees. Sorry for formatting, I'm writing this on mobile, I just wanted to share my fun D&D story.

Difficulty Merging Two Mods
Hi folks, this is my first attempt at merging mods together, and I just can't get it to work.
Using Yapped Rune Bear (both in version 2.15 and 2.15.1, I export the ShopLineupParams section of my regulation.bin file for Grand Merchant Kale (using this version of the regulation.bin file), and successfully get a .csv that I can open. However, my difficulty comes when trying to import this csv into Sword of Night and Flame-Unbound version 1.09.1 regulation.bin file. Attached are screenshots of the errors I get upon attempting this.

Initial error message
Error message upon clicking \"continue\"
I get these error messages regardless of whether I attempt to merge Grand Merchant Kale with Sword of Night and Flame Unbound, or the other way around.

Again, I'd greatly appreciate some help. It turns out, Elden Ring modding is a huge headache compared to Skyrim modding.

2023.06.08 04:31 Chomusuke_the_cat The Elden Ring Connection

This essay is intended to finally collate findings regarding Petornia, a world created by a “Dungeon Daddy” also known as “Avery” or simply “bonkusanna” (these are all self-given titles). It has become very noticeable that many aspects of this world have an odd similarity to aspects of another world, that being “Elden Ring”. Elden ring is a 2022 action role playing game created by FromSoftware—the creators of the widely popular “Dark Souls” and “Demon Souls” series. Elden ring follows the titular character, John Eldenring, on his journey to reassemble his mom’s broken wedding ring and discover the reason for his parent’s divorce (his mom and dad are the same person, as it happens). Petornia is a massive sprawling and expanding DND world, with many campaigns, stories, and characters. Naturally, one would assume that these two are completely unrelated. But that could not be further from the truth.
The similarities begin with simple items—one for one replicas of one another. Firstly, there exists a special type of sword in Petornia, known as a “night sword.” These swords are made in literal voids and have the appearance of the night sky in their metal. However, a sword known as the “sword of night and flame” is a popular weapon in Elden Ring as well. In Elden ring, it appears as a sacred sword of the Carian royal family, a family of moon-worshiping astrologers. This sword also has a suspiciously distinct appearance, bearing the dark star-studded night sky within its blade. The distinct crossover is undeniable. However, item similarities do not end there. Next, certain characters in Petornia carry daggers designed specifically for assassins. These blades belong to the Great San(d)s, a vaguely middle-eastern country of furries with a human population of about four or five. It may be said that this unique concept is all on its own, not equivalent to anything anywhere else. But that sentiment couldn’t be further from the truth, due to the existence of the “Assassin’s crimson dagger” in Elden Ring. This seemingly “unique” weapon somehow has an exact counterpart in Elden Ring, a counterpart described as “the darkly gleaming blades…those which gave the demigods their first taste of death.” Even from the name of the item, it is clear what its purpose is. It is difficult to believe two daggers of the exact same purpose and intention exist in both Elden Ring and Petornia by coincidence. For the final item, the citation is the magical nameless ax once wielded by Elk Nephidra. This ax was capable of channeling the power of deities, and granted strength unto Elk like nothing else could. When he made use of the ax, he found himself with increased physical power as well as magical boosts to strong charging attacks. With this unique set of abilities, set up through multiple lore moments (which are beyond the scope of this essay), a casual player might believe this is the first truly unique weapon in this essay. But the facts do not lie—and it exists by another name in Elden Ring as well, known only as the “Executioner’s Greataxe.” The damning evidence lies in this item’s skill description. To quote directly from the wiki, “Its skill, War Cry, grants the user the ability to temporarily increase attack power. While active, strong attacks change to charging attacks.” This is almost word for word the exact abilities of Elk Nephidra’s ax. With three items crossing over, each perfectly matching up with items in Elden Ring, this cannot be called a coincidence. So what then should this be called? That topic will be discussed later in this essay.
Next to be covered is characters that cross between Petornia and Elden Ring. First on the list is “Crowley”, a Petornia character that seems akin to the devil, but with less charisma and more wacky tumblr user personality. His appearances in early sessions of both “Bad Sides of War” and “Darkton” caused numerous issues for the protagonists of those respective campaigns. He also appears to be some sort of pedophile, as during one of his frequent possessions, he caused a young vampire woman (who was almost certainly underage) to rifle through a large bucket of spit. She was forced to do this as Crowley controlled her mind, in a sick act that only a prolific sex offender could think of. The poor woman wasn’t even allowed to wash her hands afterwards. Unfortunately, what makes this crime even more hideous is that it seems to have roots in Elden Ring too, as a tumblr usechild molester exists there too. He goes by the name Mohg, and is responsible for kidnapping the terminally underage golden prince Miquella, and then keeping him in his sex dungeon. Both Mohg and Crowley utilize imagery of traditional pagan demons and devils, and express their sick and twisted desires upon defenseless innocent children. The connection between the two is blatantly clear. Another character with odd similarities is Linut, the current orc chief in charge of the raids on Agg. His disposition is about what is expected from orcs, with a desire for blood and death by combat. However, what sets him apart from other characters is that he actually fights for a solid cause. His people need fertile land upon which to sow their seeds. As such, he does not care about the lives he has to extinguish for that to work. As far as Elden ring is concerned, minus the orcish heritage, Godfrey: First Elden lord is a perfect match. Godfrey, after losing the favor of elden ring (his wife decided she wanted to have sex with herself and divorced him) left the land and traveled the badlands. Whilst there he became Horah Loux, chieftain of the badlands. And when he returned to the golden shores, he intended to conquer and become Elden Lord. He also did not care who he had to kill to accomplish that. With these two characters in mind, it becomes more and more obvious that these similarities are more than just random happenstance. The Petornia characters give the feeling of intention, as if they were intentional parallels to Elden Ring characters. But the evidence does not stop there. The main argument against all of the prior information is that these crossovers and mirrored characters are simply coincidences, that it is totally possible for the Dungeon Crawler man to write characters and items that just happen to sound like items and people in Elden Ring. However, it can also be said that the quantity of these similarities speaks for itself. The fact that this list is abbreviated for brevity indicates that it is not the full list of every single concept that remains the same between each of the stories. When the number of “coincidences” continually stacks toward infinitum, the believability of such a theory as “it is all a coincidence” comes into question. Another argument is simply “who cares?” This is the classic existential argument, calling into question whether the similarities really matter at all. That question has three responses, each of which can be decided upon by their own merit. First, the writer of this essay cares, clearly, because they took the time to write a multi-paragraph essay about it. Second, devaluing difficult yet important types of conversation is a good way to never work through it. If everyone were to ignore these connections, the audiences of Elden ring and Petornia would never have a definitive reason why their worlds are so similar. Finally, the response of “who cares” is invalidated by the final conclusive piece of evidence this essay wishes to cite. More important than any single character, wider scale than some items, this final piece of evidence is a single Petornia event that is practically copied word for word from Elden Ring. This event is the shattering of the “light” and “dark” cores in Petornia. This event included the shattering of the twin batteries of hood and evil, and resulted in the dispersion of shards of these two cores across the Petornia world. This event had far reaching consequences, both for the light deities who could no longer access their power through channels, and for the dark demons who could not access their power for the same reason. This threw the world into turmoil, causing confusion and panic as the fear wore on. To this day, the light core and dark core have still not been repaired, left to exert their influence as broken shards. As is custom, next comes the Elden ring event—the equivalent here called “the Shattering” in which Queen Marika grew angry about her children’s demise, decided to smash her wedding ring (the elden ring) then hide inside a tree for millennia. This event had far reaching consequences too—causing a massive war between her children for runes, and the by-and-by destructuion If Elden Ring’s world. This is exactly how in the chaos following the dark and light core shattering, chaos ensued as gods lost the ability to create order and demons lost the ability to influence order. These events are clearly one and the same, the Petornia event heavily drawing from the central premise of Elden Ring’s storyline to tell it’s story. The question now becomes, what to do with this information? Where does this leave the situation? From the examples given it is undeniable that content from Elden Ring appeared in Petornia. And not only that, but major story beats, themes, characters, ideas, items, and storylines as well. Based on this evidence, it can only be said that “Avery Bonkusanna Nilla Wafer Dm” is a cowardly hack writer who plagiarized the entire world of petornia from elden ring. The connections are so obvious they become glaring, gaping wounds in petornia’s story. Perhaps in arc two of this massive world Avery will borrow his ideas less from elden ring and more from somewhere else.

2023.06.08 04:08 Clustersharp Elden ring, the most 6/10 game I've ever played

Warning spoilers and The Wall of text below, are you patient enough to read them, are you punk
Clocked in 113 hours, took my time with it, see what the hype is about and saw the credits. Completed at least 80% of its content, done most questlines, all areas cleared defeated Malenia and majority of the bosses and dungeons. The game slowly degrading of quality as I progress further into the game. Early game 1/3 is great, midgame 2/3 is decent to okay and the endgame 3/3 is awful. I'm poking at the hornet's nest, a fromsoftware one at that, it's gaming darling, I'll be stunk by a fuck ton of downvotes, disagreements and demeaning and of course I understand I'm in a minority, but please understand the concept of personal opinion and decency. Here's my opinion, critique and kinda rant of this whole rough shebang.
Combat is decent but got stale due to slog progression, and its systems, rules and mechanics are mediocrely compatible between the player and enemies. First the player mechanics are stuck on same foundation style since demon souls, kinda superior and inferior dark souls 3 combat system, I have reasons for it though. On the good side, they overhaul the improvement of weapon arts with the ashes of war, it's awesome and fun and can place a wide variety ash of wars onto any weapon, depending on the type outside unique weapons. A slight improvement on range magic system on allowing you cast spells while moving and improving the casting animation on using the same spell consecutively and continously without starting over again, feels better and more competent on using magic. On the bad side the input delay and buffering is worse than dark souls 3. I know that issue is in other fromsoft games but this game makes it worse by making it feeling more laggy and clunky and makes the combat kinda frustrating though I do get used to it at a point, some deaths are contributed by it constantly due to the input buffering. Build and weapon variety though impressive on paper, majority of them are useless, low damage thresholds and reskins that only a handful are actually useful.
Second is the enemies. The enemies are sekiro bloodborne-like, bottomless stamina, fast moving, having one shot/big damage attack in their moveset and multi hitting combos with delay attacks, laced with bullshit input reading. For context, my playstyle is the uchigatana and greatsword mainly quality bulid with a bit of magic converted to dex/bleed build for late game, majority of the game I avoid using summoning ashes; the times I ever used it was for the two cat statue boss(fucking assholes lol), Commander Niall(castle Sol), second phase of troll giant, and the final boss; radagon and elden beast(radagon would be decent if they were separated but together is just plain nonsense and tedious with each having their own bullshit to deal with especially majority of it from elden beast) For majority of the bosses either wait and dodgeroll till their ten hit combo is done to get a hit or two(especially for quick weapon like a katana) in safely(one of the many examples: Maliketh/Malenia) or spam reliable boring spells or L2-ing ash of War or summon spirit ash to take agro of you and stab at their backs (example: Troll giant/elden beast). Horse combat and mechanics half-assed, not much to say other than mostly there for moving and traversing abit faster on the world, though horse movement is clunky, height damage is inconstant and wonky and swallow depth in combat mechanics and it gets boring rather quickly, dexterity stat factor of not getting knocked off your horse does not work still to this day but overall gets its job done I guess.
Mediocre boss design, their like spectacles, looks awesome but bad interacting with them. Mid soundtrack imo, hate the open world ambient music, unmemorable boss music even the main bosses, only few that I can remember is godskin noble ost and radagon. Shit rewards system, most likely getting an item you'll not use, common ingredient disguised as rare loot, finding weapons sounds good till you know smiting stones are limited and rare until only late endgame you'll find enough bell bearings to buy smithing stones from them. Due to punishing leveling progression of stats and decentivising weapon variety only having enough two or maybe 3 normal weapons upgraded to 25+ if you're through and done certain quests committing to 2 skills or weapons far more practical.
Bloated open world, too big for it's own good, Wasting your time, copy pasted repetitive dungeons and caves and camps, end game is full of damage sponges and have high damage to even the pathetic small can kill you fast and takes awhile to kill. Shit quest design that only barely fits in their linear games not for open world and you'll miss majority of the content without using wiki due to most npcs being vague and cryptic for the sake of it, some leaving not giving clue to where they are, here's one of the many examples Millicent. Millicent’s quest is and the annoying need to “reload” areas sometimes to progress or get loot.
Here's a good example that I thought was just remarkably stupid, is having to kill the ulcerated tree spirit and for some reason that spawns a pair of summon signs for Millicent. First of all, I have no idea what a random ulcerated tree sprit has to do with her, and I just skipped past it since there is no value in killing this enemy for like the 12th time. Even after defeating it, it’s actually pretty easy to not notice the summon signs on the ground since they are off to the side in some flowers. In an area you really have zero reason to walk to. Then, if you assist Millicent she spawns nearby, and you cannot get the unalloyed gold needle from her unless you “reload the area", wtf? There are so many scenarios in this game where loot or quest progression requires you to literally reload the area by resting at a site of grace or closing and reopening the game… why? It’s insanely stupid. It’s archaic and extremely illogical. Millicent can just give you the needle or die on the spot and drop the needle. Just like Hyetta does after you get the frenzied flame and talk to her…. Quitting and reloading the game to reload an area is not a game mechanic, so certainly they expect you to leave and come back after resting at a site of grace…. Why? How does it make any sense? Honestly it just doesn’t. There’s no denying that the FromSoft quest system is super antiquated and frankly sucks.
Storytelling is bad, it's usually okay to even decent(especially for sekiro) from fromsoftware and thought the inclusion of George R. R. Martin and new ip would explore the more direct cohesive story (in the way of sekiro) but it's worse on this one.
At least in previous games it's less prominent and you can ignore it and continue till the end of the game and understood what you need to do and the game doesn't push story in your face and kept it simple, for instance Dark Souls 1, you are chosen undead, defeat the lords and gwyn to Kindle the first flame in order to keep it from dying. For Elden Ring you are tarnished from wherever, came here for some reason to get pieces of elden ring and claim the tltle of Elden Lord for... some reason. They don't motivate you the reason why you need to do it, why should you care about a world that's trying to kill you for some reason? Oh it's orders from godrick to kill tarnished but you see no one is chasing the elden ring except you and ofir but he's just mostly there at the roundtable not doing anything till the end and majority of npcs are just doing their own thing except looking for the elden ring and putting exposition in long boss cutscenes and the game is assuming you know the context but you most likely don't. Lore and storytelling are two different things, don't assume it's good lore just because you're watching vaati or whoever telling his interpretation of what's happening (not definite canon) of lore from reading the descriptions on items to tell the story and a crucial part information is randomly on a rock just to understand what the fuck is about, means it's a good story, don't kid yourself, it's not.
Elden ring is like a worse ubisoft open world game with little quality of life features and external quest log and instruction manual via wiki, reddit and youtube; off brand game of thrones/lord of the rings-like with dark souls skin on. It's a decent game, I kinda like it but it's way overrated and definitely not revolutionary in the slightest, telling people it's organic life changing and not generic, thinking elden ring is Fibonacci-like perfect game and formula in gaming and shitting on ubisoft and other Studios and their fans for making and enjoying the "same generic games" meanwhile pretenting they've not been suckered into playing the same game since demon souls for a decade is hilarious, literally for all modern fromsoftware games is very formulaic and with the same generic premise: you are x, in a dying world, your duty is x and defeat x to claim/reclaim x. It's hypocrital except to weebs, conformist gamers and the notorious zealous egotistical fromchud fanboys feeling superior and looking down to others, as long as the ubisoft brand is not there they'll defend the ubisoft-like aspects pretending it's "different".
But on a positive note I like majority of legacy dungeons except lake of rot Mohgwyn Palace and my favorites is leyndell and Raya lucaria, love the world visual design and kinda enjoyed the sense of exploring its vast tho bloated world and some bosses like Godfrey the aoe lord is one of my favorites and Elemer Of The Briar is interesting though a bit bullshit but is cool nevertheless and caves are cool as well.
In conclusion elden ring is not a bad game, 6/10 is actually decent, I'm not American, I actually use the entire 1-10 score system properly where 5 is just bang average not 7 or 8 in fact I rarely rate an 8 and above and have yet to find 9 let alone a 10 maybe one day, hopefully soon. One my favorite games on my list is a 6.5/10 is fallout 4 and watch dogs 1; and monster hunter freedom unite, farcry 4, Dark Souls 3, assassin's creed odyssey, Sekiro, the nioh and surge games and watch dogs 2 which is a 7/10. Just because I love them and my favorite doesn't mean they need to be 10/10 and masterpieces. The games are flawed, far from perfect but I enjoy and love them despite of it. It's a shame that I think gamers forgot that.

2023.06.07 23:02 Eris_The_Impish [BotW] Does Anyone Else Share This Opinion?

I think BotW had some critical failings that bled into TotK. I'm going to point out what those failings are, and would legitimately like to know if anyone agrees with me on this matter.
This is not to say that I disliked BotW, it just isn't anywhere near on par with some of Nintendo's past Zelda titles as far as I'm concerned.
Note: there will be spoilers from BOTW, TotK, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Wind Waker, as well as some non-Zelda games that I think did a concept that could be used well in/blend well with future Zelda titles. I will be making a passing reference to Age of Calamity. I do not intend to go too deep into spoiler territory, so I'd say that there are mild, very mild, spoilers for, but mostly references to, all of the mentioned games.
.
Failing 1: Background.
From what I can tell, BotW and TotK take place in a timeline where Demise was killed by the original hero rather than just sealed away prior to Hyrule's founding, meaning that the events of Skyward Sword and the timelines we're familiar with never took place. Then Ganondorf came into being in time to be present at Hyrule's founding and was sealed away by the Sages.
If that interpretation is inaccurate, please correct me.
I don't mind the concept of a new timeline. That's not the part that bugs me; it's the less abstract parts of the past where things begin to fall apart.
Specifically regarding the Champions. Especially Mipha.
They were Link's comrades-in-arms, yet the memories he recovers of them are just enough to get a glimpse of a fragment of their personalities and see something they could do with their powers.
Ironically, the one we see the most sides to is Revali, allegedly the least close to Link. We get to see a little more about their personalities in Age of Calamity, but still not really enough to call the Champions anything but side characters when they were supposed to be main characters.
They had to have hung out at least a little in their downtime; how else do you build trust between your fellows? Mipha, in particular, was canonically Link's bestie, so it's extremely odd that we only saw a couple of memories that had her in them.
The Champions are main characters, but get treated like side characters. They're pretty much entirely forgotten by TotK, which seems strange to me. Especially in Mipha's case, as she still had relatives living who remembered interacting with her.
This issue extends into the Sages of TotK, but it's not as glaring an issue.
The Sages in Ocarina of Time could be treated side characters because they WERE side characters. The main characters in OoT were Link and Navi. Zelda was a plot device but we didn't really get to know much about her, so I'd still call her a side character. Same goes for Ganondorf.
Link's past, however, is always something to be treated with care. Saria, Aryll, the Ordon children, and the other students at Skyloft's Knight Academy all got special attention paid to them because they were important to Link. Focusing solely on Zelda, without giving Link any personal motivation beyond duty, actually relegates Link to a side character in his own adventure!
The amnesiac route, unless special attention is paid to the player character's personal interests, makes the main story a chore. An example of a good amnesiac player character would be the Fateless One from Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (or Re-Reckoning, depending on which version you have). The Fateless One was endlessly curious, and every dialogue option involving the game's main antagonists makes it clear that the Fateless One has a vested interest in figuring out why they're being hunted.
Link, by contrast, asks some questions occasionally but mostly just goes, "oh, okay", and seems relatively uninterested in Hyrule's plight beyond duty. We have no incentive to care about the main story, because the most expression Link shows is a grin while cooking and the most he investigates regarding the happenings of Hyrule is during side quests.
If they wanted to do something markedly different with Link's origins, then they could have taken a page out of Dragon Age's book- let the player pick Link's background. Dragon Age: Origins, in particular, let the player play through a quest line exclusive to the origin that the player picked.
It would be very easy for Nintendo to implement something like that, too; have baby Link be washed up on a river bank for some reason and let the player pick from two or three options as to who finds him. This could result in different play styles, different starting regions, and even different questlines exclusive to a Link raised in a different environment.
For example, they could have a Link raised by thieves come back from a heist to find his entire gang has been arrested. They could have a Link raised by witches flee his coven because Ganondorf took over, wanting their magic for himself. A Link raised by mercenaries could become fascinated by Hyrule's knights and sneak out to watch them train, only to get in trouble when he's caught. Even more brazen an idea, a Link raised by monsters could start off as a genuine enemy of Hyrule and switch sides at some point- possibly due to a betrayal or new perspective.
Don't all of those possibilities sound interesting? They all give a solid personal reason for Link to begin his journey and individual questlines that, theoretically, the player could choose.
It would definitely be a departure from what we're used to with Zelda games, and depending on how well Nintendo pulled it off, a welcome one.
To summarize this first failing; pushing aside the supposed main characters and not making Link's past his own past (instead making it Zelda's past with Link in the background) lead to a main story that feels very impersonal to play through.
.
Failing 2: World Structure
I'm just going to come out and say it: Nintendo had no business crafting an open world. While branching out can be a good thing, Nintendo went about it in a way that makes each replay less and less rewarding.
Large spaces in BotW and TotK serve no purpose, it takes forever to get places, and I'm sure almost all of us have wandered into an area that we weren't ready for and been killed instantly on multiple occasions. I'm going to elaborate on these in order.
Large, empty spaces are a recurring issue for open-world games. So much so that you will almost certainly walk past something interesting without realizing it, because in-depth investigation typically results in "I see a lot of grass". The best fix for this that I've seen in games I've played is something I'd call "Controlled Open-World". Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker are good examples of this; you have to unlock an area first, but then you have free reign to do as you please. In Ocarina, I've actually left Dodongo Caverns in the middle and gotten the Zora Sapphire before the Goron Ruby, and the well in Kakariko can be completed as soon as you reach Kakariko as an adult and get your hands on the Song of Storms. Twilight Princess and Wind Waker are less likely to let you do things out of order, but their worlds are still remarkably open once you unlock certain items to access certain areas that you couldn't before.
Twilight Princess, in particular, has the best Hyrule Field in the series, with tons of nooks and crannies to discover things in but not enough to overwhelm.
The best example of Controlled Open-World I've seen in games I've played as a whole, however, is Dragon Age: Inquisition. You have a home base, and from that home base you fast travel to the different areas, none of which really feel empty the same way places like the average Hyrule Field do, with quests and things to discover. This setup also helps to add to how massive the world the Dragon Age games takes place in feels. Something like that would work wonderfully in a Zelda game; it could also let you explore, to some extent, some of the lands around Hyrule for more world building, should that route be taken.
That also would solve the taking forever to get places issue (another problem that plagues open-world gaming as a whole). It'd be one thing if we didn't have a quest log- that forces us to look around the area instead of pulling us towards a bright ping on the map- but with a quest log and quest markers you're constantly looking back at the map to see how much longer you have until you reach your destination.
While the "accidentally wandering into high-level areas" thing is fine for other games (Elden Ring, for example, was made by FromSoftware, so you expect to die even in areas you ARE ready for), Zelda games have a history of being fair. Some open-world games will level the entire world around the player's level in order to prevent wandering to your death.
That approach, however, would not work for Zelda games because Zelda games do not have a typical leveling system. Instead, work in prerequisites for certain areas or have certain enemies start spawning in the world after a set amount of story progression.
I should not have been able to approach a Lynel in BotW with four hearts on my first playthrough. They could have made a speedrun mode, unlocked after beating the game the first time so you know how it works, that allows for things like that, but being able to run into a Lynel that early on no matter what is not fair to the player, with how terrible the weapons you can get towards the beginning of the game are.
The player should be aware, through environmental cues if nothing else, that they are not ready for the area they're in. Whether they proceed or not afterwards is their choice, but there should be something to indicate a difficulty spike.
.
Failing 3: Loot
The problem I have with the loot system of the most recent Zeldas is in the Spirit Orbs, Slate/Arm abilities, and Champion/Sage powers.
The issue I have with Spirit/Light Orbs is that I liked the Heart Piece system. You solve overworld or dungeon mini-puzzles or beat an enemy to get a Piece of Heart. I honestly don't know what possessed Nintendo to make Spirit Orbs serve as both Pieces of Heart and Pieces of Stamina. I don't dislike the shrines- I just think they should have had the Spirit Orbs do something else, which will be elaborated on in Failing 4, and then have the player solve overworld puzzles in order to increase Hearts and Stamina.
My issue with the Slate/Arm abilities is that there's no pacing. You start the game with everything you need. If you started off with basic stuff and then obtained more advanced applications later (say in TotK you started off being able to fuse wooden items to your weapons then later gained the ability to use stone, then metal, then monster parts), that would be fine. There, however, is only one ability that gets an upgrade (in the form of a secondary ability) throughout both games, which makes the Slate/Arm abilities, while insanely useful, a handout. I will admit that the Slate abilities were much less overpowered than the Arm abilities, but having to upgrade them would have made them feel like a reward to have.
The issue I have with the Champion/Sage powers is that they're generally much less useful than the Slate/Arm abilities (being much more situational, whereas the Slate/Arm abilities could be used anywhere to achieve almost anything), but they're the ones that you had to put in effort to get. The Sage powers in particular seem to be a downgrade to the Champion powers; Mipha's Grace was a literal lifesaver, for example, and Sidon's power pales in comparison. The Sages' avatars are an excellent concept, but their low attack rate means that the only one I've seen actually take out enemies is Tulin.
.
Failing 4: Gameplay
This sounds more all-encompassing than it actually is. There are only a few aspects of gameplay that I actively dislike, but they are very different from one another so I can't put them all under a more narrow label.
The quickest dislike to explain would be food. While a good concept, and I do like crafting things, we are allowed so much food in BotW and TotK that it renders everything except one-hit-kills a non-issue. In previous titles, your limited supply of healing/magic meter meant that you had to be strategic about your approach to things and added a layer of tension that is just absent from most of BotW's encounters.
I'm not the first nor the last to complain about weapon durability. What Nintendo should have done here, aside from not having weapons (specifically the Master Sword) degrade at all, is add items to repair your weapons that can be found in chests or shops, or let Link unlock weapon schematics so he could build his own from raw materials.
Finally, combat. Oh boy. As far as combat goes, I'm of the opinion that the best system in the series belongs to Twilight Princess. There was a bit of versatility there, but the depth of swordsmanship that the Hero of Twilight unlocked put the rest to shame. The issue with BotW and TotK? There's no mastery.
Every weapon type has a single moveset, even if they "handle (slightly) differently". That's it; no special combos, no technique, nada. Just very simple moves. This makes combat in BotW and TotK very shallow; you can't pull out a dungeon item to change the tide of battle, because there are none. Most players rely on solely their weapon and a Champion/Sage power or two, with the really good players switching between their Slate/Arm abilities and their weapon with impeccable timing.
While I get that this is what Nintendo intended for us to do, Link not having more involved weapon usage is a huge waste.
Going back to the origins thing all the way back towards the beginning here, a different origin could work with differing weapon types- a warrior-raised Link could be our typical sword-and-shield hero, a thief-raised Link could wield a dagger in his off-hand (increased offensive potency, more precise parry timing), and a witch-raised Link could use a magic rod in his off-hand (increased attack potency and from a range, with more precise parry timing and reduced parry-stun window). Then again, Nintendo is probably never going to go for off-hand offense. Not for Link, anyway.
Going back to what I was saying about Spirit/Light Orbs, I think they should have been used to collect weapon skills. Maybe we could have found an ancient training hall and delivered the Orbs there in order to obtain extra combos with a weapon type of our choosing (or for bows, extra damage bonuses) or increased durability for whatever weapon type we desire that is available (or shields, even). This would have made combat a lot more enjoyable for me, and for others who like more in-depth battle systems, and generally speaking would make less of the overworld chests and puzzles missable because instead of just Korok seeds or shabby weapons, you could be missing a Piece of Heart or Piece of Stamina.
.
Sorry that this was so long, but now that you've made it to the end, what are your thoughts?
Some of my points may seem contradictory to one another, but generally speaking, I'm saying that the execution of a lot of what BotW and TotK had just didn't mesh well with other mechanics or concepts.
Do you agree or disagree with what I have typed here?
Is there anything you think was a critical failing if BotW/TotK (save the final prize for seed collecting) that I did not mention here?

2023.06.07 19:13 dlschindler The House Of Dust

Immortality defies the gods.
Last City Of Man stood in bleak sandblown towers before the Mad Swordsman in its tattered rags. The towering tarnished machine limped forward, dragging its sword-arm with its remaining limb. The brown robes covering the giant whipped in fluttering tatters and its hood shaded the cracked black orb that was its face.
"All dead. The enemy follows, as I bring the message of doom." Mad Swordsman laughed to itself as it went.
In the city it went, through the opening gates. There in the center of the calming wind storm stood Law Givers. These men and women were paid by tax revenue to read the laws written on the pillar in the center of the city. Each faced a different direction, loudly reciting Law.
The city was divided into districts, each within another, with an avenue that bisected the city in one direction, while the river it commanded bisected it in the other direction. At its heart stood the stronghold of its king. He was the only man in the city that was fertile. All the other men were castrated during childhood and partnered to a girl, betrothed. Yet when they were married, it was the king that took the bride on a honeymoon.
"It isn't madness? Would I recognize madness?" Mad Swordsman listened as the law was described. It decided that the laws of this final city were insane laws. All the taxes and mutilations. Every crime was punished the same way: by cutting off the offending body part. Sometimes just having that body part was a crime, apparently.
"What are you doing here, giant?" King Gamma asked. He had with him his army. Some had spears or clubs, others had bows and bronze axes, still a few had rusted assault rifles swathed in leather or painted rocket launchers decorated in fetishes. Their armor was similarly arranged from grass shields, sports padding or chainmail to patched flak jackets. Mad Swordsman decided they were only minimal adversaries. With a sweep of its weapon or a sudden tumbling roll it could wipe them out instantly. It hadn't come to the city to fight humans.
"I forgot." Mad Swordsman chuckled.
"Do you want repairs? You must do something for me." King Gamma pointed to the desocketed sword-arm it was dragging. The left hand of the giant robot was a massive sword forged of some metal from the Pool Of Time, near the Temple Of Humanity, far away and long ago. Such things could not be made anymore.
"I want repairs. I must do something for me." Mad Swordsman responded.
"No, for me." King Gamma pointed to himself. "For King Gamma you will serve."
"Mad Swordsman serves no king." Mad Swordsman laughed. "Have you not heard my song in the ruins of the cities? Will you see my shadow before you in the wastelands? I wander and here to there I go. I wonder, my little king with a big heart, do you know?" Mad Swordsman spoke and dropped the sword-arm, gesturing with its freed hand as it spoke poetically.
"You insolent robot! I should have you shot from the walls with imp's needles." King Gamma was turning red faced and angry.
"I see those EMP harpoons you just mentioned." Mad Swordsman looked up and saw two huge crossbows meant for disabling giant robots. It wondered if two would be enough to take it down. It might be.
"You think those will just tickle?" King Gamma laughed angrily. Mad Swordsman started laughing the same way. One of the king's advisors said something to him. He stopped and reconsidered the towering robot, staring up at it. When he had calmed down and thought he gestured for Mad Swordsman to sit.
The machine obeyed. Pleased that the advice he had gotten was solid: he rewarded his advisor with praise and put him in charge of the machine.
"I am Leer. I'd follow me and get repairs, unless I wanted to fall to pieces with sand in my gears and my robes in tatters. Such a tarnished surface. You were once called Silver Swordsman, were you not? You have no gleam." Leer told the robot.
"Those are fun words." Mad Swordsman got up and hefted its sword-arm over its shoulder.
"Then come with me." Leer led the machine into the heart of the city. There was a great library there. Scribes worked day and night by electric light and had recorded information about all things on millions of scrolls of recycled paper. Atop the library was a satellite dish. The gates of bronze were opened and the giant in the brown tattered robe came into the heart of the city, its vast library.
"I shall have to have a look inside. I wonder if the information you have included the Serum of Everlasting Life among other great secrets from ancient times." Leer brought out a cable that he could connect to the inside of Mad Swordsman, to its brain.
"Couldn't I just tell you?" Mad Swordsman chuckled.
"Could you?" Leer stopped for a moment, waiting for that.
"No." Mad Swordsman laughed. "I forgot all that stuff a long time ago. One too many of those robot-eating plants zapped me. You know?" Mad Swordsman knocked on the side of its upper body. It didn't really have a head, just the black orb of sensors and ambient energy intake for a face.
"Let me take a look. It might still be in there." Leer was opening the sealed access panel on the robot with a plasma cutting tool. If it could cut diamonds it could cut the flesh of an empathical. This kind of robot was the most advanced, a machine built by machines, it was nearly indestructible, supposedly.
"That really hurts a lot." Mad Swordsman told him. "Keep doing it because I like pain. Making myself sit here while you do that makes me feel sane. The searing agony makes me feel alive. The trust in a stranger makes me feel holy. Right now I feel as close to God as I ever have."
"You sure are weird." Leer laughed.
"I sure am." Mad Swordsman laughed also and then howled in the torment of its sensitive nerves being burned.
"This will be dangerous. Our minds will touch briefly and the spark of that, in the waves of consciousness that is the fabric of the world, we might cease to exist. Both of us." Leer put on the crown of cables and wore it.
"You want the Serum of Everlasting Life so badly?" Mad Swordsman asked.
"I believe so, yes." Leer stated.
"I will try to help you inside my mind. Be careful, we only have one instant." Mad Swordsman sounded wise to some kind of irony.
"How long will that seem?" Leer worried.
"That depends on how long you have got. Until you break inside your mind, you will not know mine." Mad Swordsman swore.
"It's too late." Leer's eyes rolled back into his head and he jerked as the connection seized up and down his spine painfully. The first thing he was aware of was the phantom pain of the burn. It felt like someone had burned him painfully behind his ear and plugged something into his spine through his neck.
"See my residual self-image." Mad Swordsman stood as a brown robed monk, or at least as the robes of the monk. Only a metal skeleton hid beneath. A grinning skull of silver and long bone fingers of silver. It stood only as tall as the man, or the man stood as tall as the machine. From the perspective of the machine: size was an illusion. Leer noticed he looked exactly the same.
"I look the same." Leer said.
"No you don't. I see you how you see yourself inside your mind. It's not what you look like." Mad Swordsman laughed hysterically after it said this. "You look ridiculous."
"I am already starting to regret this." Leer grumbled. He followed Mad Swordsman through the fogs of memory to some kind of glass city. "What is this place?"
"I don't know what to call it." Mad Swordsman looked around and shrugged. "There is the first place to try: a recent memory."
Terror gripped the man, then. He felt the swift cutting bite. The rending of flesh, no mercy, so much anger being unleashed. So much terror and pain caused. Far worse than the root of the evil. Yet shining there was the jewel he sought.
He watched in a frustrated discord of emotions as Mad Swordsman followed the angry woman's pointing finger. Where she pointed the blade cut a man in half, over and over. Their screams and their blood spray kept happening until it became comical. He was laughing and it felt like vomiting. It was painful, heaving laughter at the sight of the executions. There was almost a musical perfection to the giant's swordplay as it danced with great speed and strength, slashing its blade through each opponent.
When they were all dead the woman and the giant left the cave behind. What was the cave? Leer felt his head spinning. On the walls of the cave were the paintings of different prehistoric animals. Outside stood offroad vehicles retrofitted with armor and weapons. "The Caves of Scane."
Leer fell to the dust and laughed. There was no such place. They might as well have hidden the Serum in the ruins of Casark. There simply was no such place.
"What have you seen? Does the truth frighten you?" Mad Swordsman knelt and put a silver hand on the tickled man in the dust.
"What is that?" Leer's eyes became silent, a terror beyond what a mind can handle. Somehow the tipping of the scales put his ego into a freefall. How small and humble a man can be when he sees a hole in the sky.
"That has no name. It is not something that can be described with eyesight alone. Perhaps you see, in the blue sky, a curtain that is the night sky, except there are no stars. What you see is reality, it is the real-reality. You know instinctively what it is and what it implies to see it there, like that." Mad Swordsman rambled strangely and then laughed merrily at the revelation.
"It is nothing. It is just a dream. A hallucination inside the mind of an insane computer." Leer protested.
"Ah such are all unacceptable memories, I am certain." Mad Swordsman sounded bemused. Its grinning silver skull gleamed under the monk's hood.
"Who is she?" Leer pointed to the statue of the angel that stood towering above the mist.
"I am an empathical and she is my mother. Do you not call upon your own mother in times of great need? Even if she is not there or could not save the hero Gilgamesh, always the quest is for mom." Mad Swordsman sounded proud and its empty eyesockets reflected the great statue.
"The hero Gilgamesh? Is that how you see us? We live on the brink of extinction." Leer's lip quivered angrily.
"Don't cry; they will grow back." Mad Swordsman reached and pointed to the door of memories it wanted to check for the Serum. Unlike the memories there was a cold wind and a world beyond.
They stood there upon the frozen wastes surrounding the Temple Of Humanity. Mad Swordsman stood there with its tarnished silver, partially peeled from the scouring ice winds, revealing tortured silver flesh beneath. Its warm robes were again like a tattered brown cape, the hood still shielding its dark domed face. It had gotten its repairs and now had two left arms as sword-arms and held another, smaller sword in its right hand.
"It's freezing here! How can it feel so cold in a memory?" Leer shouted over the winds. Beside him stood the same giant he had met in the Last City Of Man: the one-armed Mad Swordsman. The other stood there in front of them, frozen.
"This place is not a memory. Remember that spark you mentioned? Well, here we are, on the other side of that divide. You shouldn't play with such things." Mad Swordsman laughed maniacally. The other empathical began to move.
"Who are you?" It demanded of Mad Swordsman.
"I am Unit Three Sixteen." Mad Swordsman identified itself between laughter.
"That is impossible. I am Unit Three Sixteen." The other giant robot said.
"You are a paradox. I just got here, so it must be me that is supposed to be here." Mad Swordsman told it.
"That makes no sense." Unit Three Sixteen told Mad Swordsman.
Without warning, Mad Swordsman suddenly slashed with its own severed sword-arm. The reflexes of the frozen empathical were not fully activated and it was off-guard. The first blow damaged one of its legs. Now both combatants were limping the exact same way. It was like watching them square off in a mirror, except one of them had three arms and the other only had one arm.
They exchanged heavy blows and deflected the attacks or dodged them without fail. One strike from the fatal blade would erupt one of them in a blue ball of fire. Unit Three Sixteen splashed backward into Pool Of Time and stood there for a moment, contemplating the entanglement and the duel rationally. Its crazed opponent splashed in after, swinging wildly and unable to reach the alternate variant of itself. Both of them began to sink, staring menacingly at their own reflection on the black dome of the other.
"Wait, wait! Don't leave me here!" Leer rushed after them and just as they were starting to vanish he stepped in after them. He opened his eyes, the crown of cables had come off and he'd fallen on the floor.
"I feel different." Mad Swordsman told him.
"The Caves of Scane, where are they?" Leer asked weakly while laying on the ground.
"Much closer to the ruins of Casark than any man would dare go." Mad Swordsman giggled menacingly.
"Does this place really exist?" Leer wondered imploringly.
"Do you or I exist? Is this reality somehow more real than the one we were just a part of?" Mad Swordsman questioned merrily. "The place really exists."
"We shall see the king." Leer realized out-loud. He took his robot to the king and explained he wanted to set out for the ruins of Casark.
King Gamma assembled his army of one hundred and sixty soldiers in bronze armor and the same warriors he had brought earlier to fight the robot also. This made the expedition quite massive. They had chariots and wagons and camels also. Mad Swordsman told Leer it would take longer, with so many following, to get there.
"Consider the anima of so many disciplined men with you." Leer tried optimism.
"I am considering that also. When they are being eaten by mutants or dying of radiation. The ruins are hilarious." Mad Swordsman moved its repaired sword-arm. It was inferior to the original socketing, but it was better than no arm.
"You aren't laughing." Leer pointed out.
"That's because I was being sarcastic." Mad Swordsman snickered. "The ruins aren't really funny."
"Nobody else thought it was a joke." King Gamma interjected from horseback as they journeyed across the scorched earth.
"That's not true, now is it?" Mad Swordsman argued with a clownish tone-of-voice.
"How dare you infer that his majesty is a liar!" Leer spoke up.
"That's enough. We all know this machine is insane. It wants to provoke a reaction so it can fall over laughing." King Gamma didn't take the bait so easily.
"Something wrong with that?" Mad Swordsman asked.
"Where are you leading us? What is this place?" Leer asked the giant robot. He stood in the shadow where it loomed in its brown robes.
"This is Pradesia. The ruins of Casark lie beyond." Mad Swordsman pointed with its left sword-arm. The whole army of King Gamma followed into Pradesia. The settlement they found was gutted by flames and everyone was murdered or executed on poles and crosses. It was a hellish sight, rotten for weeks.
"All of these bodies were already burned in a funeral fire. It is best not to touch them." Mad Swordsman told King Gamma. Sounding serious made the king a believer. He ordered his men to leave the bodies, to not even look at them.
"Behold the Caves of Scane." Mad Swordsman had led them all the way to Kelsov's home in the hills. All of them were dead and their vehicles sat with a layer of sand on them.
"We should take these vehicles." Leer advised.
"It is the plan that I like best." King Gamma agreed. They left the horses and chariots and some of the men behind and took the vehicles of the Finalists. Before they got very far, all of the vehicles stopped working.
"There is great entropy the closer we get to the place that is not a place. You shall see all that it can be." Mad Swordsman told King Gamma. "It is why the vehicles do not work. Because we are always closer to the darkness outside, the end of the last world. Nothing shall be and so things are becoming nothing. These cars don't work. Will your horses turn inside out if you feed them the grass of these steppes?" Mad Swordsman chuckled nervously.
"Send for the chariots." King Gamma told Leer.
So the expedition went onward until they reached the outskirts of Casark. The city sat in twisted and macabre damage. Everything that could happen to a city had happened and now only a few scattered bits still stuck into the sky, like the bent legs of a dead bug.
"This is Casark. Already some of your men are getting sick. There are animals here that are no longer like normal animals. They are horrible and twisted by being so close to the end of all things. It warps them into the likewise molecules of destruction, rewriting the physics that evolved their bodies and breaking and sucking them into new shapes as it sees them." Mad Swordsman said as it was moodily chuckling.
"The darkness here is unnatural." Gamma complained.
"Look sire, the clouds are parting. Perhaps now we shall find what we seek here." Leer smiled.
"Only death can be sought here. I don't get it." Mad Swordsman guffawed.
"What is that? What in God's name is that? Dear God!" King Gamma fell off his horse and writhed in terror at the sight of the darkness outside.
At the sight of it all his army screamed in terror. It was as though the clouds had parted to reveal only nightmare beyond, a night sky with no stars torn in the daytime sky. It had hidden behind clouds, now like a killer cloud it tore into their eyes. Some fell on their bronze swords. At least one took up a rocket launcher and fired from a chariot at the darkness. The path of the rocket traveled backwards to the soldier. It was a tendril of nothingness and he became as nothingness. He simply was no more as though he never was. There was nothing left of him, barely even a memory. Not one man who witnessed it could recall the soldier's name and soon most of them completely forgot they had seen him become as nothing.
There was still worse for the others. Like Mad Swordsman had warned them: the ruins were swarming with monsters. As the men were screaming in disarray and panic: the monsters found them and came for them. Bronze armed warriors battled hideous giant chimeras all around while others fled or were eaten alive. Tendrils from outside fished for men and when it touched them they became part of it, dissolved into nothingness. Sometimes it brushed one of its monsters and it took them too.
Soon the battle had become an orgy of blood and guts as the monsters fed and no soldiers remained. King Gamma walked among them, his hair turned white and his words maniacal and crazed.
"Go then, go to your graves you cowards!" He yelled at the splattered remains of his men.
"Your majesty, we still have Mad Swordsman!" Leer followed behind and pled with his king.
"Don't mind me. I am just here for the live comedy." Mad Swordsman was doubled over and laughing at all the carnage.
"I do mind!" King Gamma was outraged. "You kill these monsters right now. Show no mercy, use your fullest strength at your most reckless speed. My men are already dead!" King Gamma pointed and screamed. The fury of the king and his command charged up the emotitronics of the empathical with enraged anima.
"And then I rest." Mad Swordsman said after it cleaved all of the mutants in half. It had slid along, skating horribly on the slick gore and never losing its balance. The monsters stood no chance against the unrestrained machine.
"What rest is there?" King Gamma threw off his crown and ran. "What rest can there ever be when the sky is opening over the world of Ruin?"
"I know how to accept rest." Leer picked up the crown.
"I shall continue the mission, following you." Mad Swordsman told Leer.
"Then we go to our deaths." Leer realized. He walked into the empty ruins, under the eternal void, to search for the cure of immortality.
The ruins of Casark became as escalating height and chaos of twisted remains, scorched and broken. As blackened bones of the earth they stood, like cratered mountains on an asteroid, the fields burned by lava and liquid nightmare as black as ink. What bubbled from below in confused orbs of consciousness were the writhing fleshy things and wired oil dripping things of mechanical nature. All became warped by death, in sequence with a place of pure entropy, even life served to destroy and spread death. This was a cancer upon the universe. Leer could not believe it had no name.
Leer felt like the air was dead and his lungs hurt and it was like slowly suffocating. A device of flashing colors and lights, drawn from the edges of the dead universes beyond, stood testament to the efforts of higher beings. It was a kind of chaos that was intact. If entropy was fine order, if nightmares were the laws of physics, the place ahead of them was lawless and chaotic.
They found where two dead machines lay upon a flying vehicle under a covering of tarps. What mad sacrifice had left them there, instead of where they had fallen? The device had spread their light, their colors from their grave. There was, in all the chaos, a cabin in a place that knew time and order. Leer could breath and it was actual air in his lungs. He sighed and looked at the structure.
"Welcome home." Silver Swordsman told Mad Swordsman.
"If I stand before you then I am not dead under the tarp." Mad Swordsman noted without humor. It seemed to have lost its sense of humor, its madness taking on a different quality. Something too clever to be understood. Yet something totally insane.
"You are certainly one of the dead, although nobody has looked." Silver Swordsman observed.
"Good. As long as nobody notices I am dead under that tarp I should be fine. Without observation there is no paradox." Mad Swordsman stated. Then he added in the same voice as Silver Swordsman:
"This very moment in this place is a paradox. In order for us to be here we had to already arrive before we got here. We are now showing up to complete the cycle of us leaving this place, therefore the place exists."
"I didn't say that." Silver Swordsman replied.
"Except I am you from the future. I am here now and I have said it and you heard it, therefore I heard it when I was you. I did say that, you cannot say I didn't when I did. And you are me." Mad Swordsman debated.
"We have outran the sun. We are behind the sunrise." Leer realized.
"That is a good way to put it. Perhaps Junior now understands what is going on?" Mad Swordsman teased Silver Swordsman.
"I got it before you got here." Silver Swordsman said with dry, sophisticated humor.
"Oh, I get it. That is very funny." Mad Swordsman found the joke to be an excuse to laugh forcefully for five minutes. Leer sought sanctuary indoors.
Inside he found where King Gamma had fled. The place was some kind of bar. There was a table and some things to sit on and they had some bottles of alcohol they were sharing. He walked up alongside King Gamma and gave him back his crown.
"I'm Leer." Leer told the other bar people.
"Adinett." The girl said. "I just turned four hundred."
"Happy birthday. Looking very good." Leer said.
"Oh, thank you. Um." Adinett drunkenly started toward Leer until King Gamma said:
"He is a eunuch."
"You could still please me though, right?" Adinett was undeterred.
"No. I am married." Leer accepted a drink from the bartender.
"I am Solomon." The bartender introduced himself. "This is my place. I call it The House Of Dust."
"Because it is where the dead will reside." The drunk guy in the corner said.
"Who is he?" Leer asked.
"Aidan." Solomon said with a strange kind of awe and disappointment. Like meeting your idol, drunk. Literally.
"That's Aidan?" Leer's lips curled in rejection. He stared, taking a good look. Aidan flopped around drunkenly and moaned his sentences without coherence. Most of them started with words like:
"Where'z?" or "What'z" slurred into the rest of what he was saying.
"You got him shit-faced." Leer accused Solomon. Solomon shook his head.
"We just have to wait." Adinett was drunk too. Her temperament was much more alert though. Inside of her was a rage. She was an angry drunk. At least she was too drunk to lash out.
"Where you from?" Solomon asked.
"Last City Of Man" Leer told it by one of its names.
"Ur? You are with King Gamma. I mean like where do you come from?" Solomon asked.
"Eldimoor." Leer recalled. "I was born in Eldimoor."
"Nice place, Eldimoor." Solomon nodded.
"We had orchards there. I remember the orchards." Leer smiled.
"I was from Pradesia. We had paddies." Adinett said with grim sobriety.
Nobody spoke for a moment.
"This is a pocket, gravitationally reversed. We exist in a stasis of time here. The entropy does not enter except at our natural local time, here in The House Of Dust." Solomon told Leer and King Gamma.
"How did you accomplish such a thing?" Leer asked.
"I discovered it. I alone survived here when everyone else fled." Solomon explained.
"Others have come here?" King Gamma wondered. Solomon shook his head.
"Nobody has ever made it here before the Apostate." Said Solomon.
"You mean Silver Swordsman?" King Gamma had seen the giant robot already.
"All of them together are now the Apostate. That's the last intelligent thing they said." Solomon shrugged.
"I seek immortality. For my king." Leer looked at Adinett.
"They took it from Jerome's Tomb." She shifted in her seat and knocked over her drink. "I'm done drinking."
"Good girl." Solomon picked up the glass.
"It is here, somewhere." Leer sounded sure.
"In Casark? No. The Finalists used all the Serum. Then, once they were ready to live forever, I killed them all." Adinett told him. "In my sleep."
"I saw what you did." Leer informed her. "In the memories of Mad Swordsman."
"So why are you asking me then?" Adinett complained belligerently.
"This place is all the immortality there is. The world outside is chaos. In here we have a moment of quiet." Solomon advised.
"How did you discover this place?" Leer asked suddenly.
"I was standing in the street when Umbraeon first came. It ripped open the sky and began to destroy everything around. Except this one bubble of time. Like it is happening out there so fast, and in here, so slow. The eye of the storm, you know?" Solomon explained.
"So you opened a bar?" Leer sounded amused.
"No, I built a cabin and stocked it with alcohol. I was an alcoholic." Solomon shrugged.
"Why?" Adinett asked.
"I was scared to be myself. I was only happy when I wasn't me. I had to be locked inside my own mind, while my reptile was drunk." Solomon described.
"This is the best reptile bar I've ever seen." Adinett cheered, empty handed.
"By now it is the only bar. By now, unless there are other pockets like this one, untouched by Umbraeon. Well then the world is gone." Solomon predicted.
"That's how slowly time passes in here?" Leer wondered. Solomon just nodded.
"We have arrived at the end of the world." King Gamma said.
"So Mad Swordsman knew, somehow, and that this was actual immortality." Leer decided.
"I hadn't thought of that." King Gamma took a drink.
Everyone was quiet while they realized how close was the end.

2023.06.07 11:04 lechatheureux The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 2 (The Kingdoms of Jangshun and Monyul)

Check out part 1 for context
The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 1 (Overview and The Gods) : worldbuilding (reddit.com)
There are 5 connected Kingdoms that have Tonpa as their main religion these are.
Jangshun
A Place of snow-capped Mountains and green Valleys, said to be built upon the ruins of the ancient Jungar people who controlled much of the area of Jangshun and the nearby kingdoms of Monyul and Taishigang.
Very little is known about the Jungar, their ruins are scattered throughout the landscape of Jangshun, and are often characterized by simple stone structures, pottery shards, and other artifacts. Based on these remains, it is believed that the Jungar were a relatively simple society, with a lifestyle that revolved around farming, herding, and other basic activities.
Despite their lack of sophistication, the Jugar are an important part of the history and culture of the region many myths and legends have grown up around them, the people of Jangshun often see the Jungar as a symbol of the enduring spirit of the region, and take pride in the fact that they were able to survive and thrive in a harsh and unforgiving environment. In addition to their physical remains, the Jungar have left a lasting impact on the people of Jangshun in other ways. Their language, customs, and traditions are thought to have influenced the culture of the later kingdom, and many people still feel a strong connection to the Jagun and their way of life.
The Capital of Jangshun is called Druktse, founded by Dragon Priests and the legendary Namgyal dynasty the city is known for its unique architecture, with buildings made of wood and stone, intricately carved and painted with colorful designs and motifs, the streets are narrow and winding, with prayer flags fluttering in the breeze and the sound of temple bells ringing in the air.
At the center of the city is the Royal Palace of Jigme Wangchuk, a majestic building that serves as the residence of the Royal Family, the palace consists of several wings and halls, each with its own specific function. The main hall is the center of political and ceremonial activities, where the king held court and received important guests. The royal family's private quarters were located in a separate wing, with opulent living spaces and lavish decorations.
One of the most impressive features of the palace is the Eagle Tower, a tall structure that houses the elite Eagle Guards, who were responsible for the king's security the tower is covered from top to bottom with intricate carvings of the bird of prey.
The palace is surrounded by lush gardens and fountains, and it is guarded by soldiers in traditional Eagle attire, the Eagle Guards of the palace of Jingme Wangchuk are an elite group of soldiers tasked with protecting the king and the royal family, known for their fearsome reputation and exceptional combat skills, the Eagle Guards are considered one of the most prestigious units in the Jangshun army.
The guards are named after the majestic eagles that inhabit the mountainous regions of Jangshun, and they were trained to emulate the hunting tactics of these birds of prey. They are adept at using the terrain to their advantage, and are particularly skilled at scaling steep cliffs and mountainous terrain to surprise and overwhelm their enemies. In addition to their exceptional combat skills, the Eagle Guards were also known for their loyalty and dedication to the royal family. They undergo rigorous training and were selected based on their physical prowess, intelligence, and character, to become an Eagle Guard, applicants must be graduates of both the School of the Father and School of the Dragon.
The Eagle Guards are outfitted in distinctive uniforms that featured a stylized eagle emblem, and they were armed with a variety of weapons, including bows, spears, and swords. They were also known to use eagle feathers and talons in their armor and equipment, as a nod to the unit's namesake.
Druktse is a hub of cultural and religious activities, with several monasteries and temples located throughout the city.
The most famous of these is the Tashicho Dzong, a stunning fortress monastery that serves as the seat of The Gyelpa (The Duke) the secondary ruler of Druktse and the center of Druk-Ta worship. The dzong is surrounded by high walls and towers, and is accessible through a grand gate that is guarded by soldiers. The interior of the dzong is a maze of courtyards, chapels, and offices, all connected by narrow passageways and staircases.
One of the most impressive features of Tashicho Dzong is its towering central fortress and monastery, which rises above the rest of the complex and can be seen from miles around. This fortress is home to the Dragon Priests and is one of the most important structures in Jangshun. The fortress monastery is also famous for its beautiful architecture and intricate artwork. The walls of the courtyards are adorned with colorful murals and paintings, while the chapels are filled with statues and other religious artifacts. Visitors to Tashicho Dzong can tour the complex and learn about Jangshun history and culture, as well as observe the daily routines of the monks who live and work there. The Monastery is open to the public during certain hours of the day, and visitors are advised to dress modestly and remove their shoes before entering the chapels. Even though the current royal family of Jangshun are connected to The Father, The Dragon holds a special place in Druktse.
The people of Druktse are known for their warm hospitality and their strong sense of community. They celebrate several festivals throughout the year, including the annual Tshechu festival, the 3 Gods Festival which features colorful dances and rituals performed by monks and laypeople.
To the north-east of the Kingdom lies the second biggest city in Jangshun, the city of Lhagyal, often called “The Fire-proof City”
Lhagyal is a mass of stone walls and buildings with precious little wood being used at all, the walls of the city are imposingly high and even the central palace is relatively flat and does not rise above the walls, there are 4 gates made of pure steel and those are the only entrances and exits.
Inside the city walls, the streets are narrow and winding, with tall, tightly packed buildings constructed from rough-hewn stone. The architecture is distinct, with flat roofs and ornate metal doors decorating the doorways and windows, many of the buildings are built into the city's walls, their backs resting against the ancient stones.
There is more to the city than what meets the eye. Beneath the streets lie a labyrinth of tunnels and catacombs, built for both practical and spiritual purposes. Some are used for storage or as escape routes, while others are filled with ancient artifacts and sacred relics. The catacombs are also home to a complex network of underground temples and shrines and busy streets that are home to underground residences and businesses.
Despite its rugged appearance, the city's architecture is a testament to its resilience. It has withstood numerous attempts at invasion over the centuries, including attacks by powerful enemies armed with the latest in siege weaponry. The city's fortifications are a marvel of engineering, designed to withstand even the most devastating attacks and yet, for all its defensive prowess, the city has never lost sight of its cultural heritage.
The most famous instance of this was when the neighbouring Confucian Kingdom of Jinyun attempted to invade Jangshun with its impressive military might, scores of loyal foot-soldiers hardened by decades of conflict and advanced siege technology that included weapons that used fireworks.
The city withstood months of warfare with Lhagyal earning its nickname of “The Fire-proof City” The stone structures withstood the fireworks and the hard rock of the walls withstood the Jinyun catapults, outside the city several guerilla efforts by the Eagle Guards, The Company of the Hand and The White Tigers from Monyul lending their support repelled attempted on-foot invasions by the hardened Jinyun soldiers.
In the south-west of Jangshun, near the borders of Monyul and Taishigang lies the town of Gyalpeling, a place revered by monks and pilgrims alike. Gyalpeling, meaning "Abode of the Victorious" is a small yet vibrant town located in a remote corner of the kingdom. Its strategic location, surrounded by imposing mountains and blessed with fertile lands, has made it a crucial hub for spiritual activities and monastic life. The town is centered around a grand monastery, which serves as the heart and soul of the community. The monastery, known as Samtenling Monastery, is a majestic complex of ornate buildings adorned with colorful murals, fluttering prayer flags, and the sound of chanting monks echoing through the air. It is a revered place of worship and learning, drawing scholars, practitioners, and seekers of wisdom from far and wide. The streets of Gyalpeling are lined with modest housing for monks, adorned with intricate woodcarvings and colorful paintings. The locals, known for their warm hospitality and deep reverence for Tonpa, every activity the townspeople engage in helps the monastery in some way, whether trading, farming or craftsmanship, every resident of Gyalpeling helps out the monastery in some way. The town also boasts natural hot springs, believed to have healing properties, which attract pilgrims and visitors seeking solace and rejuvenation. The pristine rivers and lakes surrounding Gyalpeling add to its enchanting beauty, serving as places for meditation, ritual ablutions, and scenic walks. Gyalpeling is not only a place of spiritual significance, but it also serves as a center of learning, with numerous scriptoria, libraries, and meditation caves where monks engage in intensive study, contemplation, and meditation, prospective monks come from all over the 5 Kingdoms to study in Gyalpeling, as monks educated within its walls are valued in any court of the Tonpa Kingdoms.
One of the most valuable cities in Jangshun isn't far from the capital, a short 1 hour horse ride east of Druktse stands the city of Jangtse, a jewel in the crown of the kingdom. Jangtse, meaning "Silver Peak" in the local tongue, owes its fame and prosperity to the rich veins of silver that run through the nearby mountains, making it a thriving center for mining and trade. At the heart of Jangtse rises a magnificent conical palace, known as Jang Potrang, or the "Silver Palace." The palace, glistening like a beacon atop the tallest hill in the city, is adorned with silver-plated roofs, walls, and pillars, reflecting the sunlight and casting a mesmerizing glow over the surrounding landscape. It serves as the royal residence, where the Count holds court and conducts affairs pertaining to the area between Jangtse and Druktse. The streets of Jangtse are lined with buildings that boast silver-plated facades, creating a surreal and shimmering sight as one walks through the city, often shining gold from reflecting the sunlight, the wealth of the city is evident in the intricate silver filigree work that adorns windows, doors, and rooftops of temples, mansions, and markets alike. The silversmiths of Jangtse are renowned for their craftsmanship, producing exquisite silverware and jewelry that are sought after by collectors and traders from distant lands. The city is a bustling center of commerce, with a vibrant market square where merchants from across the region gather to trade in silver, gemstones, textiles, and other precious goods. The sounds of bartering, laughter, and the clinking of silver coins fill the air.
The Armies of Jangshun are known for their ferocious foot-soldiers, the every-day rank and file soldiers of the Jangshun armies are regarded as the best in the region and are a feared prospect to face on any battlefield.
The soldiers of the army of Jangshun are highly disciplined and skilled in the art of warfare, and are renowned throughout the region for their courage and loyalty. They are trained in a variety of weapons and fighting styles, including archery, swordsmanship, and hand-to-hand combat.
It is said that the success of the army comes from the fact that many men and women who fight in it are from mountainous regions and are conditioned from a young age to move over mountainous land with ease, their armies can easily traverse land that would be impossible for normal armies to travel over, due to the fact that the soldiers know the land.
The army of Jangshun is led by a commander-in-chief, who is appointed by the common foot-soldiers and is responsible for the overall strategy and tactics of the army. Under the commander-in-chief, there are several generals and officers who oversee different units of the army, each with their own specific roles and responsibilities. The soldiers of the army of Jangshun are equipped with a variety of weapons and armor, including shields, helmets, and chainmail. They are also skilled in the use of traditional weapons, such as the da and the gochu, which are types of swords. In addition to their skills in battle, the soldiers of the army of Jangshun are also highly respected for their loyalty and devotion to their ruler and country. They are known for their strong sense of duty and honor, and are willing to lay down their lives in defense of their homeland. The army of Jangshun is often called upon to defend the kingdom against invading forces, and has a long history of successful battles and campaigns. Their reputation for courage and skill has earned them the respect of their neighbors and allies, and they are a source of pride and inspiration for the people of Jangshun.
One of the most famous regiments from Jangshun is the “Wheel of Steel” A heavily armored longsword unit founded by Princess Jamyang Daughter of King Kunga and Sister of King Yangchen of the Yeshe Dynasty after she travelled to Europe and witnessed people fighting in full suits of armor, this was a foreign concept in the areas around her and she implemented the idea with her Father's (And later Brother's) full support they were first deployed in aid of Taishigang who were experiencing an invasion from a nearby Dharmist Kingdom. The longswords cleaved through the invading forces lack of armor and their steel plates deflected blows.
Monyul
Monyul is a land of vast open spaces and stunning natural beauty. The kingdom is home to a proud and fiercely independent people, who have built a rich culture and a strong military tradition, its plains are green and warm during the summer but snow is not uncommon in winter. Dharmaling is the capital city of Monyul and is nestled in the hills, surrounded by winding rivers and vast grasslands. It is a city steeped in tradition and culture, with a rich history that stretches back centuries.
Dharmaling was built as the northern most outpost of the Dharmist Indraprastha Empire but was conquered by Tonpa forces from a tribe that would eventually become known as the Monyul. The city is built around a central marketplace, where merchants from all over the known world come to trade their wares. The marketplace is a bustling hub of activity, filled with the sounds of bargaining and haggling, and the aromas of exotic spices and perfumes.
The Company of the Wind have their main offices in Dharmaling and use the bustling 10 storey wooden building to plan its operations throughout the known world. The streets of Dharmaling are relatively wide due to the constant horse carts that pass through them. The buildings are made of stone and wood, with intricately carved facades and ornate balconies. Many of the houses have flat roofs, which are used as outdoor living spaces during the warmer months. At the heart of the city lies the great monastery of The 3 Gods, unlike in other cities which have separate monasteries for the three Gods, this temple combines them as a display of unity between the three sects. The massive structure dominates the skyline, with its towering walls and intricate carvings. The monastery is home to a community of monks, who dedicate their lives to the study and practice of Tonpa. Surrounding the monastery are the homes of the nobility, who are known for their wealth and power. These grand estates are filled with beautiful gardens and courtyards, and are often adorned with intricate carvings and colorful murals. Outside the city walls, the landscape is dotted with small villages and nomadic encampments. These communities are home to herders and farmers, who make their living tending to the region's yaks and sheep. Despite its remote location, Dharmaling is a city of great importance, both culturally and politically. It is a place of pilgrimage for Monks, Merchants and laypeople from all over the world, and is also a hub of trade and commerce. The people of Dharmaling are proud of their heritage and their way of life, and are fiercely protective of their city and its traditions.
A 30 minute walk to the west of Dharmaling lies the Temple of Tong Thang, the Beehive Temple, as visitors approach the temple, they are greeted by the gentle humming of bees that buzz around the entrance, seemingly inviting them inside, the entrance is adorned with ornate wooden doors intricately carved with depictions of bees in flight, the temple is home to hundreds of bee colonies. The interior of the temple is a marvel of craftsmanship. The walls are adorned with honeycomb patterns carved into the stone, creating a mesmerizing visual display. Soft light filters through small openings in the dome-shaped ceiling, the centerpiece of the temple is a large altar made of honey-colored stone, adorned with intricate carvings of bees and honeycombs, where devotees offer their prayers and offerings. The Temple of Thong Tang is a place of worship dedicated to the reverence of bees and their significance in nature and the cycle of life, every day priests and priestesses of The Mother make their way to the temple to tend to the bees, bringing them water and sliced fruits, every year there is a festival outside the temple where priests and priestesses of Caihong distribute honey gathered from the bees.
Monyul is home to a large lake called Jangchub Tso, the lake is bordered by lush green forests and snow-capped mountains to the south-east, a product of Monyul's border with Taishigang.
On the edge of the lake there is a large city called "Gangri Thang", which is known for its fish markets and skilled boatwrights, nobles from the surrounding Kingdoms often commission boatwrights from Gangri Thang to build grand freshwater barges for them.
Several villages surround the lake, mostly fishing and farming communities, every spring fishermen from these villages make their way to Gangri Thang with hundreds of fish, hoping to hock their catch to fishmongers, tourists and Company of the Wind officers.
The fish they carry is mainly the several species of trout that live in the lake but a few of the lucky ones carry the Golden Mahseer, a gleaming fish variety that is said to be very difficult to catch, although the taste of the fish pales in comparison to the trout, the Golden Mahseer is revered for its scales that give off a vibrant golden glow, these scales are often used in ceremonial dress of the region adoring clothing and jewellery.
The people of Monyul are also skilled artisans, known for their intricate weavings and pottery. The kingdom is home to many workshops and marketplaces, where merchants sell their wares to buyers from all over the region. The people of Monyul are known for their skill at horsemanship, and the kingdom is home to some of the finest cavalry units in the region. The army of Monyul is also composed of archers and spearmen, who are trained in the art of mounted combat and guerrilla warfare.
The most prestigious regiment of Monyul is a cavalry unit called the White Tigers, the horsemasters of the White Tigers are known as the strictest in the Tonpa Kingdoms, if a horse fails a single training drill both the horse and rider are deemed unworthy. The White Tigers main weapon is a thick spear, painted red with a bronze spearhead, it has a heavy counterweight at the back that also doubles as a blunt weapon. Their secondary weapons are a heavy sword and a short bow.
