Here are my picks for La Derby Day. As a fair warning, I have been in a slump since I have returned to betting after Covid 19 debacle that saw too many tracks adjust their meets. While I have hit just enough races to keep pushing my expectations to another day, week, or month, it pales in comparison to the winning streak(s) I had between 2011-2019. I will get it back eventually but a couple of just misses when I first came back caused me to lose faith in or change the way I was doing my betting set-up. While the near misses have continued, it is because I have narrowed enough race(s) down correctly, but I have made the wrong final decision(s) on too many occasions. Basically, racing goes in spells of good luck and bad luck that no one can control. I tried to force the issue but ended up doing more damage than good. Anyways, GOOD LUCK at the races.

1st Race: Crescent City Derby --- Purse: $100,000 --- 3 YOs La-Bred --- 1 1/16M Dirt:
1) Benoit (7-2) is a son of Closing Argument who finished 2nd in the 2005 Ky Derby at 80-1 and broodmare sire is English Channel, who won 6 G1 stakes, including the 2007 G1 1 1/2-mile BC Turf on a soft grass course by seven lengths among his 13 wins in 23 lifetime starts, all on grass. Like most sons and grandsons of Mr Prospector, his progeny moves up on all type tracks that has any moisture in it. Benoit's 2nd dam, Batuka, won the 1999 Peruvian Fillies TC for 3 YOs. 5x6x4x4 to Mr Prospector. Has started 4 times with 2 wins and 2 seconds but now gets a new trainer and he has two works since his last start, one 14 days after last start and one 7 days later and 7 days before this start. Only needs someone to run with the heavy favorite early to be a major factor in stretch.
8) Late September (5-1) is a son of Munnings, who won three G2 sprints, all at 7 furlongs and was G1 placed 4 times among his 14 lifetime starts. Broodmare sire, Lemon Drop Kid won the 1999 G1 Belmont S, denying Charismatic a TC, then added the 1999 G1 Travers S, and 2 more G1s & 2 more G2s in 2000 on his way to being named 2000 U.S. Champion Older Horse among his 10 wins in 24 lifetime starts. 4x4 to Mr Prospector. Late September has won 3 times in 8 lifetime starts, including 2 La-Bred stakes and a maiden win at CD in 52.05 for 4 1/2 furlongs against open bred. He has faced tougher in 4 of his 8 starts though his last start was against this type and he put in a half-hearted effort. Could he be off his best form? Very possible, but I will give him another shot as it is his third start since his last winning effort and his next start was against open bred stakes horses that winner ran one of the fastest time (109.96) at this year's FG meet, which has been duller than fast for most of the meet.
5) Allnight Moonlight (9-5) is a son of Ransom The Moon, a 2-time winner of the G1 Bing Crosby S, was a horse for the course at SA and Del Mar but struggled throughout his career away from those two tracks. Broodmare sire, Medaglia D'Oro, won 3 G1s among his 8 wins from 17 lifetime starts but is probably more famous for his back-to-back seconds in the BC Classic in 2002 and 2003 and what his progeny has done while racing. Allnight Moonlight comes into this race as the one to beat because of his bloodlines and that he is speed on a track that favors front runners but do not believe he will get to cruise all along like his first two wins indicates.

Race 2: Maiden Special Weight ---- Purse $75,000 --- 3 YOs --- 6 furlongs dirt:
3) Billy Bob Rocket (20-1) is a son of Spaniard who won 3 of 11 starts and finished second in his only stakes race, a black type stakes restricted to horses that did not win a $50K winning stakes purse in six prior months. Billy Bob Rocket's dam, Danceinthestreet, won 8 of 13 lifetime starts, all in conditioned allowance and/or claiming races while leading most of her races throughout in fast times. Broodmare sire, Citidancer, won 3 of 4 lifetime starts and finished 2nd in the G1 Jerome H in his last start and only stakes try. Billy Bob Rocket has made one start at Delta Downs, breaking slowly in a 5-furlong maiden race, then giving a valiant effort to get involved in the stretch. One work designed to put more speed in him 5 days before race day and a better break from gate is all this one need to upset this field. Looks live at good odds to me.
Noble Reality (5-1) is a son of Al Wukair, a G1 SW in France among his 3 stakes wins and 4 wins in 7 lifetime starts, all at 7 furlongs to one mile on grass. Broodmare sire, Arch, won 5 of 7 lifetime starts including a G1 and a G3 stakes win. Noble Reality's dam, Money Time, won 3 of 16 lifetime starts but traces back in tail female to Family #1 which includes a Byerley Turk mare, Prunella and Penelope among several other top producing broodmares. Money Time also has three crosses of Lalun, dam of Never Bend and Bold Reason (broodmare sire of Sadler's Wells) and Lalun's dam line traces back to Qui Vive, a full sister to Vedette, sire of Galopin and Speculum, the two sires most responsible for the formation of the second X-factor gene family, of course with help from the Whalebone line broodmare sires. While Noble Reality is an outcross in his first 5 generations, he has that sneaky Sadler's Wells/Danzig cross in his sire line/broodmare sire line that has been very successful for European breeders for 3 decades. First time starter that will likely be overlooked in betting and worth a look. The break will be key for him.
4) Castlewarden (5-2) is a son of Into Mischief, a G1 winner on AWT at 1 1/16M but whose progeny has proven to be better on dirt more than any other surface. Broodmare sire, Empire Maker, won the 2003 G1 Belmont S while denying Funny Cide a TC sweep among his 3 G1 wins in 8 career starts including a second in the 2003 Ky Derby to Funny Cide. While Castlewarden's dam placed in 4 of 8 career starts but did not win, all against maidens, she hails from one of the most important dam lines of this century. Castlewarden is a first-time starter with solid works indicating he might be a top performer with some experience.
5) King's Glory (4-1) is a son of Speightstown, who due to injuries that required significant time off, did not win a stakes race until he was a 6 YO but then went up the ladder to win 3 more G2 stakes with a G1 stakes win in G1 BC Sprint in the final start of his career. He has proven as a sire he can get top class sprinters but some of his progeny has stretched their early speed to mid distances on both grass and dirt. Most of his progeny usually needs a race or two to get a real feel of racing, then makes beating them extremely difficult, especially at sprint distances between 6-7 furlongs. Broodmare sire, Unusual Heat, won 2 minor stakes in Ireland during his racing career and stood in California for most of his stallion career where most of his progeny dominated California's grass sprints early then began stretching their speed to 8-8 1/2 furlongs and crossover to dirt using those same tactics with some success. King's Glory has a 5x4 cross to Northern Dancer, not exactly in the idea spots for me, so I will use both Nasrullah, whose dam appears in Bold Ruler line along with Nasrullah and his 3/4 brother, Royal Charger, who appears once each in King's Glory's 4th dam pedigree, and Somethingroyal, who is dam of Secretariat and Sir Gaylord, sire of this one's 4th dam. Bloodlines will not stop this one, only another less-than-ideal break from gate will. Eight works to prepare for this start with steady improvement noted before his last, an easy breeze less than 7 days before scheduled start, mainly to ensure he stays fit but without risking taking anything out of him.

6) Louisiana Liberty (20-1) is a daughter of Cloud Computing, who won the 2017 G1 Preakness S for his only stakes win in 8 lifetime starts. His short race career resembles most horses that are asked to do too much too soon before gaining any real racing experience. Broodmare sire, Pleasant Tap, finished 3rd in the 1990 Ky Derby, won the 1990 G2 7F Malibu S and after trying some of the best as a 4 YO but coming up short, had a career year as a 5 YO winning 2 G1 stakes and placing 2nd in 3 more G1 stakes, including the 1 1/4M BC Classic and was named 1992 Champion Older Horse. Louisiana Liberty's dam, Pleasantly Blessed won 11 races and finished second 12 times including winning 3 minor stakes on grass in 30 career starts. 5x4 to Mr Prospector, 5x5 to Halo. Ribot crossing in the sire line and broodmare sire line will only help. Tailed off after breaking her maiden in her 3rd career start after two near misses in her first two starts. In her last, her 4th start since that maiden win, she indicated she was returning to her top form but had to settle for second to the early pace battle winner who had open a clear lead entering the stretch. One solid work since her last but 9 days before scheduled start should have her ready to go.
1) Alpine Mist (7-2) is a daughter of Biofeld, who won 3 G2 stakes races among his 4 wins in 14 career starts, including 2 at one mile and the other at 6 furlongs. Broodmare sire, Brahms, scored his only G1 win in the 1 1/8-mile Hollywood Derby via a disqualification of the unofficial winner for a foul he was not part of. He added a G3 stakes win and a listed stakes win, among his 5 wins in 17 career starts. 5x4 to Mr Prospector and Northern Dancer. Filly is unbeaten in 3 lifetime starts and with 3 works since her last effort, she should have another top effort left in her.
3) Star Moment (15-1) is a daughter of Star Guitar who won 24 of 30 lifetime starts and dominated La Bred stakes races but found open bred graded stakes a little too tough as 4 of his 6 losses came in graded stakes races. He has been a top sire for La-Breds for almost a decade and his progeny wins from 6 to 1 1/16 mile quite frequently. Star Moment's dam, Moment Of Majesty, won 1 listed Canadian stakes, and placed in several Canadian graded stakes among her 4 wins in 28 lifetime starts and is a member of the only crop of St Liam before his untimely death. St Liam, won 9 of 20 lifetime starts including 4 G1 stakes races on his way to being named 2005 Champion Older Horse. However, his duel with Ghostzapper in the 2004 Woodward S is a classic that is rarely seen in U.S. racing as they duel throughout the race, going 108 4/5 and 133 2/5 before Ghostzapper finally got the edge on the last jump at the wire. St Liam's dam, Quiet Dance, is also 2nd dam of Gun Runner. 2x4 to Quiet American. She broke her maiden at first asking, then ran a dull race against La Bred stakes fillies followed by an even race in a grass allowance against older La-Bred fillies on a grass course that played extremely slow making gaining ground nearly impossible. Should welcome the return to fillies her own age and has two works since last effort. Trainer is likely to have her ready to spring the upset, if others falter especially.
5) Olivia G (4-1) is a daughter of Strong Mandate, who won the G1 Hopeful S at 7 furlongs and two races later, finished 3rd in the G1 1 1/16-mile BC Juvenile. Broodmare sire, Indygo Shiner, won a G3 grass stakes among his 4 wins in 12 lifetime starts but also broken his maiden and won a conditional allowance race on dirt. Olivia G's dam, Adrianne G, won one minor stakes race among her 11 wins in 33 starts but possesses what I feel is most important in determining which broodmare will succeed at breeding and that is a will to win regardless of the class they raced in (a lot of trainers either over- estimate or underestimate a filly's potential). Adrianne G now has produced 3 foals to race including 1 that was won 2 La-Bred stakes, another who won once in 5 starts and this one, who is La-Bred stakes placed but still looking for her first win after finishing 2nd in all 5 of her starts. Has two works since her last start, a week apart and trainer believes she fits here. Will wait before risking any win money on her but an underneath exotics finish is definitely a good possibility.

Race 4: Costa Rising S --- Purse $100,000 --- 4 YO & Up La Bred ----- 5 1/2 Furlongs Turf:
2) Relentless Dancer (15-1) has started 3 times on grass in his 30-start career, all at 1 mile or 1 1/16 mile against open bred stakes horses twice and tried unsuccessfully to grab the early lead in all 3 tries. Has an open bred stakes win on his resume and faced open bred class more often than restricted types until claimed for $40K out of a race at Keeneland last April. He went off form three starts back but his last signals he is regaining his best form even though that race was run on a sloppy dirt track. His last two starts with against allowance open bred types, something most handicappers do not know matters and does not check. Trainer put one fairly good work in him after that last start and Luis Saez takes the mount. Relentless Dancer has bloodlines that suggests he would be better at sprinting on grass than going middle distance on the surface. Think he will be overlooked enough to give reasonable odds for the risk and definitely worth considering.
4) Bertie's Galaxy (6-1) is the old class horse of this field that will beat this field on his best day. However, trainer has tried to keep him in top form for over a year while stopping on him a couple of times, probably due to physical ailments. He brought him back in November after a 5 1/2-month break with only one winning start in June breaking up an eight-month break. Obviously, he needed that start, especially since the track was sloppy but he broke tardy and basically was eliminated from winning. Next start, he broke with his usual burst, but pace was much too fast early that no speed was around at the end, and he finished last. Given another two-month break, his 5 works since has the look of a trainer who is serious about winning this race and probably circled this race for his next start a few months ago.
6) Vodka Gimlet (10-1) tries the grass for the first time. He has some bloodlines that suggests he may just like the grass. One of my concerns with newly turned 4 YOs is many are facing their elders for the first time. However, in this case, trainer has raced him against older in his last four starts as a 3 YO and he was competitive in 3 of them, though he was slightly overmatch in the three open bred races. Now catches a field of state bred with a couple of good, published works. Spacing between his works, in this case, does not concern me as much as a horse who puts only an average workout in. Trainer obviously thinks he has the horse as fit as he can get him.
3) X Clown (6-1) won 2 stakes races as a 2 YO in 2019, one restricted to La Breds and the other open to all 2 YOs. However, he went wrong in his first start as a 3 YO and spent the next 10 months on the shelf in 2020. In 2021, he returned to being competitive though he did not win a race. He won 2 races as a 5 YO in 2022, in an O/C $35K race at 5 1/2 furlongs on grass and a conditional allowance race, both restricted to La-Breds. After one more dull effort after his last win, he was given 6 months break and returned in Feb off of 4 decent works, so he obviously need that start. Now has 2 more works since that start and while he may not be ready to win just yet, he should improve enough to have a good chance at an exotic placing.

6) Merlazza (9-5) Edge in a fairly weak field. 2 good works since maiden win followed by an easy beeze six days before schedule start. 2nd dam is a full sister to G1 SW Majestic Warrior.
4) Saenz (15-1) will wire this field if inconsistent works does not affect her conditioning. Regardless, has works with bloodlines that suggests she will develop into a solid runner eventually.
2) Stellar Lady (9-2) should rebound against these as she has faced tougher most of her career.
7) Pasta Salad Rhonda (12-1) could not get the early lead in last as heavily favored front runner popped the gate and got a clear lead before the first quarter but would stop after six furlongs, long after this one had falter. Switches back to dirt where it came well off the pace to secure her maiden win. Works since last start are not eye popping but were more designed to increase endurance. Likely to be under the radar of many.

6) Sweet Shild O Mine (15-1) Poor ride as she was wide throughout in her first start gave her no shot at impacting the race. 3 more decent works and a change of jockeys is likely to make a huge difference. Top choice.
11) K'antheia (10-1) First time starter. 4x3 to Storm Cat, 5x5 to Northern Dancer, 5x5x5 to Mr Prospector.
4) Ervadean (12-1) First time starter. 4x5x5 to Mr Prospector.
1) Perfect Wish (10-1) Started once and battled for lead with eventual 2nd place finisher to the 1/8 pole before tiring. Useful first race for the experience mostly. 3 more works featuring a leg stretcher that was designed for exercise only, then a good work to make sure she was still fit, and then another leg stretcher six days before scheduled start to maintain fitness without taking any fitness from her. Break is the key for her and several others in here. 5x4 to Mr Prospector.

8) Dialherup (9-2) Finished 2nd in her first start in a $50K maiden claiming. She broke sluggish but jockey let her settle and then let her run after a half, and she was able to gain second after gaining the lead as the early pace setter tired readily in mid-stretch but was outrun late by another late runner. Bred for more speed, adds another good speed work and an easy work six days before this scheduled start. A better break, which is likely, should make her tough to deny. 4x4 to Storm Cat, 5x5x5 to Secretariat.
2) Super Luxe (8-1) broke extremely slow in her only start, spotting the leaders 15 lengths, then closed throughout without getting close to reaching contention to finished 4th beaten 11 1/2 lengths by top two. Bred top speed on top of top speed, so a much better break should be expected. Trainer has been giving stamina type works all along and he has added more since that race, so likely thought she was a 2-turn horse to begin with. 4x4 to Fappiano.
12) Corsini (8-1) broke slowly in her only start and slowly picked off horses and then put in a valiant effort to impact the race without much success but just miss finishing third after arriving late to finish 5th but was no match for top two who was the beneficiary of FG speed favoring dirt track. Has 3 more decent works since that start and only needs a better break with a good trip afterwards to move on to her next condition. 3x5 to Northern Dancer, 4x5 to Natalma, 5x4 to Raise A Native, 5x5 to Hail to Reason.
11) Freedom For All (5-1) is a first-time starter that has put in plenty of works suggesting she has some talent and finally gets her chance to see if she can shine. Break is only concern, as it is with most first- time starters. 4x4x5 to Mr Prospector.

Overview: I've had my truck a year now so here are my impressions. It's a Supercab, 6.5' bed, 4x4, Locker, tow package, 3.73 gears, and large fuel tank. I'm a simple man, haha. This was the first new vehicle I've ever bought for myself and the first Ford I've ever owned. I chose this over the Ram and GM 1500s because the visibility was so much better, the 5.0 sounded nice and had much better pick-up than the 5.3 Vortec. It just felt much better put together as well. So, my impressions: The truck has been extremely solid. I use it as my daily and commute 15-25 min through moderate city traffic,but also for hunting and towing every now and then. I've towed my 1987 C-10 from NM to Louisiana with a Uhaul car hauler and averaged 13 MPG. Power was perfect, control was good, and braking felt good. I also towed a 17' rented RV out to the boonies for elk hunting. It averaged 11 MPG (very mountainous) towing. Trolling around the fire roads was pretty good. It was very bouncy on account of the tow package. BUT we didn't get stuck or even struggle. Also with the larger tank we were able to tow 3 hrs up to the site, and drive around for 4 days on the same tank. We topped off for the return. With the 3.73s it's very peppy, even at 5,000' where I live. Goes right to the 106 mph speed limiter in no time, haha. The visibility in traffic in town is good and there really aren't any blind spots. Also, Gas mileage has averaged 18.5 since I bought it. The worst tank was 16ish, the best was 22 mpg and that was all highway at 75 - 80 mph. Issues: 1. The passenger A-pillar trim got a weird bleached out spot. It was replaced under warranty. . . That's it so far. I haven't noticed any oil consumption with the Coyote like some have noticed. 2. The 10 speed is..clunky. It works great, kicks down when I need it and upshifts seamlessly. BUT when taking off slowly at low speed it can hesitant then CLUNK down into a gear. It absolutely HATES 2nd gear. So if I California stop at an intersection then get on the gas for moderate acceleration it'll drop into first pretty rough. Things I'd have done different: 1. Crew cab. With the 6.5' bed its not THAT much longer. I was wrapped around the axle on cost and wheel base for offroad. The Supercab is plenty big for now, but it will be tough if I have a larger family. The suicide doors are the real issue. They're pretty annoying in tight parking spots. Also, I have a feeling that the door seals will be an issue eventually, there is more wind noise from where the front doors latch into the rears. They also rattle some on rougher roads. 2. sometimes I think I should have just gone full truck and gotten a 8' bed and regular cab. Thats what I had before. It worked fine.
Upgrades: 1. Wheels and Tires. The steel wheels are horrible looking, but I knew that. I'm cheap and didnt like any of the factory selections. So Likely some sort of bronze/brown wheel (Methods like everyone else?), and I have an unnatural love for Yokohama Geolandar MTs because that's what I had on my Jimny. Im bummed I'll take a MPG hit but whatever. 2. Bed liner. because I used the bed. 3. Tint. It gets hot here.
Any who, lots of words. I just noticed there arent THAT many people who have purchased any new trucks and put out a big review. Also I don't have time to make a video.

The World Baseball Classic has had the entire baseball world buzzing for the last couple of weeks. Orioles’ players performed admirably in the tournament, with Dean Kremer starting the only game that Team Israel won and Cedric Mullins driving in a couple of runs for the runner-up United States. Despite these solid performances, it was Anthony Santander who stole the spotlight. Santander went 6-17 with 2 home runs and a whopping 1.332 OPS in five games for Team Venezuela.
Santander is far from the first, or the best, Venezuelan-born ballplayer to spend time with the Orioles. Nine Venezuelan players have played for the Orioles in multiple seasons and also put up positive bWAR. Those nine include:

The Orioles history of Venezuelan ballplayers is even broader than these nine players though. Forty-one Venezuelan-born players have been a part of the Orioles major league roster at some point since the move to Baltimore in 1954. Let's take a brief look at the history of Venezuelan Orioles.

The Early Legends (1959-1967)
The first Venezuelan to make the major leagues was also the first to play for the Orioles—Chico Carrasquel. Carrasquel, hailing from Caracas, immediately made a splash in the major leagues when he debuted with the Chicago White Sox in 1950. He posted a .282/.368/.365/.733 slash line, coming in third in the AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Walt Dropo of the Red Sox (who drove in 144 runs with a .961 OPS), and Whitey Ford, as well as coming in 12th in AL MVP voting. Carrasquel, never an elite bat, put up solid numbers in six seasons with the White Sox. He made 4 all-star games and posted a career year in 1954 with a .716 OPS and accumulating 5.5 bWAR. He was traded to Cleveland following the 1955 season and spent the next 2 ½ years in Cleveland before making his way to the Kansas City Athletics and eventually the Orioles following the 1958 season.
Orioles’ manager Paul Richards hoped that Carrasquel could return to his White Sox form of a couple seasons past, but the 1959 season would prove disappointing for the 33-year-old Carrasquel. Carrasquel entered Spring Training in a three-way shortstop battle with established Orioles’ shortstop Willy Miranda and young up-and-comer Ron Hansen. Carrasquel won the starting job out of spring training, but the season would not go the way either he or the Orioles hoped. He slashed .223/.292/.295/.587 in 391 plate appearances and lost the starting job in mid-July to Miranda. Hansen would replace both Miranda and Carrasquel as the Orioles’ starting shortstop in 1960, proceeding to win AL Rookie of the Year.
The 1959 season proved disastrous for Carrasquel and ultimately ended his career in the major leagues. On September 17th, it was revealed that Carrasquel had partially lost vision in his left eye due to a throw from Red Sox’s Catcher Sammy White which had hit Carrasquel in his brow during a game on May 10th (Lou Hatter, The Baltimore Sun, September 17,1959). Carrasquel was released that offseason and he never played in the majors again, although he played, and eventually managed, for years back in Venezuela.
It was a couple years before another Venezuelan would play for the Orioles, and in 1963 another White Sox Venezuelan was traded to Baltimore—future Hall-of-Famer Luis Aparicio. Aparicio was already an established big leaguer when he was traded to Baltimore. He won Rookie of the Year at 22 years old back in 1956, and proceeded to appear in 5 straight all-star games and win five gold gloves from 1958-1962.
Aparicio was traded to Baltimore in January 1963 along with teammate Al Smith in exchange for Ron Hansen, two young players in Pete Ward and Dave Nicholson, and an aging future Hall-of-Fame catcher Hoyt Wilhelm. This trade proved very beneficial for both the White Sox and Orioles, but was considered “a coup” for the Orioles and helped propel the team into competition for the American League pennant (The Baltimore Sun, January 20, 1963). Aparicio would continue his great play in Baltimore, winning two more gold gloves, attending two more all-star games, and getting MVP votes in three separate seasons between 1963 and 1967. The Orioles posted a winning record in four of Aparicio’s five seasons in Baltimore, and even won the World Series in 1966.
The 1967 season would be a disappointing one for the Orioles though. The club finished 76-85 and GM Harry Dalton chose to trade Aparicio back to the White Sox at the end of the season. The trade opened the door for Mark Belanger to become the starting shortstop beginning in 1968. Belanger would remain the Orioles’ starting shortstop for the next fourteen years, winning eight gold gloves and posting 41.3 bWAR in that stretch. Aparicio would play in the majors for six more seasons—three with the White Sox and three with the Red Sox—before being elected into the Hall of Fame in 1984. It would be another fifteen years following Aparicio’s trade before another Venezuelan would appear in an Orioles’ game.

The Golden Years (2000-2011)
Only three Venezuelans appeared in an Orioles’ game between 1967 and 1999. Third Baseman Leo Hernández played in Baltimore in 1982,1983, and 1985 and hit for an unremarkable .226/.264/.341/.604 in 239 plate appearances. Oswaldo Peraza pitched for the Orioles in 1988, pitching to a 5.55 ERA in 86 innings for a 107-loss team. Peraza missed the 1989 season due to a rotator cuff injury and spent 1990 and 1991 bouncing between AA Hagerstown and AAA Rochester. He would never pitch in the major leagues again. The final Venezuelan to play for the Orioles in the Twentieth Century was 34-year-old Ozzie Guillén who signed with the Orioles in January 1998 after 13 seasons with the White Sox. He would only appear in 12 games and hit for an .063 batting average before being released on May 1st. Despite the dearth of Venezuelan talent in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, the 2000s would see a large number of talented Venezuelan ballplayers make their way up to Camden Yards.
2000 was a year of change for the Orioles. The team had not had a winning record since 1997 and the season did not start any better, with the Orioles sitting at 33-44 by the start of July. GM Syd Thrift decided it was time for some changes and traded off aging stars BJ Surhoff, Mike Bordick, Harold Baines, Mike Timlin, and Will Clark for a glut of minor leaguers and young MLB players. Journalist John Eisenberg wrote, following this mass trade-off, that “the Orioles were going nowhere for the third straight season, stuck in a losing, expensive cycle. Now they have more money to spend on Mike Mussina and other free-agent pitchers over the winter, and they have so many new, young pitchers that it’s hard to keep track. It’s about time” (John Eisenberg, The Baltimore Sun, July 30, 2000). Sound familiar? Though most of the minor league talent from these trades never made it to Baltimore, there was one who did. That one player was Melvin Mora.
Born in the northwest of Venezuela in 1972, Mora signed as an international free agent with the Houston Astros in 1991. He made his major league debut with the Mets in 1999 and struggled. He played well to start the 2000 season in New York, hitting .260/.317/.423/.740 through 79 games before being traded to Baltimore. Mora would spend the next nine years in Baltimore as a utility player and eventually settling into the Third Base position starting in 2004. The Orioles never had a winning record in any of Mora’s seasons with the club, but he flourished at third base, posting his best season in 2004. He hit .340/.419/.562/.981 and posted 3.5 bWAR that year despite the club only winning 78 games.
A number of other Venezuelan players played for the Orioles for multiple seasons during Mora’s tenure in Baltimore. Jorge Julio, Robert Machado, Ramón Hernández, Óscar Salazar, and César Izturis all played alongside Mora. Hernández is the most notable of this group. He signed as one of the Orioles’ bigger free agents in the 2005-2006 offseason in the midst of intense trade drama around Miguel Tejada. Despite this, Hernández immediately had a career year in 2006. He hit 23 home runs and put up an .822 OPS. Although he would never produce at this level again, Hernández’s three-year tenure in Baltimore was a positive one. He was traded following the 2008 season—with the club failing to win more than 70 games for the third straight season—for a young prospect named Justin Turner. Mora became a free agent a year later and finished his career journeying around the NL West.

Lean Years (2011-2016)
A number of Venezuelans played in Baltimore following the departures of Mora, Hernández, and Izturis, although none of them for very long. Six players played for the Orioles in this stretch. None stayed for more than a year. The most notable names are Freddy García, Francisco Rodríguez, and Gerardo Parra. All three have career bWARs over 10, but none of them were exceptional in their brief stints in Baltimore. The other three players include: Endy Chávez, Miguel Socolovich, and Jorge Rondon.
Ironically, the Orioles had one of their most successful stretches in this period from 2012 to 2016. It largely occurred without significant help from any Venezuelan players, or much in the way of foreign talent at all. A few exceptions would be: Wei-Yin Chen, Ubaldo Jiménez, Miguel González, and Jonathan Schoop.
The end of this winning stretch would see the arrival of the most important Venezuelan on the current Orioles’ roster—Anthony Santander.

The Venezuelan Renaissance (2017-Present)
It may seem odd to call this period a renaissance, but there are two major factors going into this belief. First, is the ascension of Anthony Santander over the last couple of seasons. Second, is the investment of Mike Elias’s front office in international signing and development.
Santander is the first Venezuelan player to play multiple years for the Orioles since the departure of Izturis in 2011. Though he struggled early on, Santander has improved dramatically since the 2020 season. 2022 was his best season to date, hitting 33 home runs and posting a .773 OPS. Elias has also voiced his own confidence in Santander despite the large crop of outfield prospects, like Colton Cowser and Kyle Stowers, who are pushing for major league playing time in the upcoming seasons.
A number of other Venezuelans have played for the Orioles since 2017. Renato Núñez is the only other one to spent more than a season in Baltimore. He played the best seasons of his career in Baltimore and has played in Japan and Mexico since leaving the major leagues after the 2021 season. Other Venezuelans to appear since 2017 include: Luis Sardiñas, Engelb Vielma, José Rondón, Jesús Sucre, Freddy Galvis, Robinson Chirinos, Rougned Odor, Jesús Aguilar, and Breyvic Valera.
Just as important as these players is the large investment in international player development. None of the 9 players who played multiple productive years in Baltimore came from the Orioles’ farm system, and most of the 41 Venezuelans who have appeared on the major league roster were signed and developed by other teams before playing in Baltimore. Elias’s investment in international development is part of a larger trend in MLB roster construction and marks a departure from the previous Duquette regime, which largely ignored international signings at a time when other organizations, like the Astros, were beginning to build strong major league teams through international player development. Elias has signed 33 Venezuelan prospects since taking over in 2019. Some, like Jean Pinto, Maikol Hernández, and Elio Prado, have established themselves as interesting prospects to watch in the Orioles’ farm system.

Conclusion
The Orioles may not have the most storied history when it comes to Venezuelan baseball players, but it is hard to deny the importance of players like Luis Aparicio, Melvin Mora, and Anthony Santander to the Orioles, as well as the importance of players like Chico Carrasquel, Ozzie Guillén, and others to the history of MLB as a whole.
It is worth looking back at this history though, especially as the game and MLB become more international every year. Only time will tell if Santander will become the next great Venezuelan Oriole, or if the young prospects will ever make the show. For now, as we bask in the joy that was the WBC and wait for the start of the regular season, we can celebrate and remember the lives and careers of those Venezuelans that have made their way to Baltimore in the past and present.

The car rental industry is a multi-billion dollar sector of the US economy. The US segment of the industry averages about $18.5 billion in revenue a year. Today, there are approximately 1.9 million rental vehicles that service the US segment of the market. In addition, there are many rental agencies besides the industry leaders that subdivide the total revenue, namely Dollar Thrifty, Budget and Vanguard. Unlike other mature service industries, the rental car industry is highly consolidated which naturally puts potential new comers at a cost-disadvantage since they face high input costs with reduced possibility of economies of scale. Moreover, most of the profit is generated by a few firms including Enterprise, Hertz and Avis. For the fiscal year of 2004, Enterprise generated $7.4 billion in total revenue. Hertz came in second position with about $5.2 billion and Avis with $2.97 in revenue.

Level of Integration
​
The rental car industry faces a completely different environment than it did five years ago. According to Business Travel News, vehicles are being rented until they have accumulated 20,000 to 30,000 miles until they are relegated to the used car industry whereas the turn-around mileage was 12,000 to 15,000 miles five years ago. Because of slow industry growth and narrow profit margin, there is no imminent threat to backward integration within the industry. In fact, among the industry players only Hertz is vertically integrated through Ford.

Scope of Competition
​
There are many factors that shape the competitive landscape of the car rental industry. Competition comes from two main sources throughout the chain. On the vacation consumer’s end of the spectrum, competition is fierce not only because the market is saturated and well guarded by industry leader Enterprise, but competitors operate at a cost disadvantage along with smaller market shares since Enterprise has established a network makina me qera of dealers over 90 percent the leisure segment. On the corporate segment, on the other hand, competition is very strong at the airports since that segment is under tight supervision by Hertz. Because the industry underwent a massive economic downfall in recent years, it has upgraded the scale of competition within most of the companies that survived. Competitively speaking, the rental car industry is a war-zone as most rental agencies including Enterprise, Hertz and Avis among the major players engage in a battle of the fittest.

It may have been released before 2004 but from what i remember the graphics were to good for it to be at least pre 2000. It had IRL truck racing opening movie. You could pick between 4-5 trucks at the beginning. you could select the map you played on by choosing a photo of the map on a cork board/photoboard if my memory serves correct. you could also custom paint your truck before the race with either entirely new colors or you could use stencils of different designs as well. I was a little kid when I played it so I never got past the first track. it had a big hill that the starting line was on that lead into a S curve. everything after that is fuzzy. The truck physics were super realistic. I swear the name was something like 4X4 or something to that nature but every time I looked it up, nothing came up. Would really appreciate the help!

EDIT: SOLVED.

I have a 1996 Mustang GT. It originally had the 4.6 V8 in it. It got engine swapped to the 5.4 V8 from an f150. The original 4.6 calls for a 550 CCA battery and the 5.4 in a f150 calls for 850 CCA. For the mustang after engine swap would I need a 550 or 850 CCA battery?
