My Preferred Methodology for Color Philosophy (on Main Philosophies, Colorless, Centers, etc)

2023.06.02 16:44 ColorTheorizing My Preferred Methodology for Color Philosophy (on Main Philosophies, Colorless, Centers, etc)

So, I've been ruminating on the colors and their philosophies, and I decided to post the heuristics I use here on the chance some of you might find it useful.
First of all, I think it's best to start with a clean slate by begining with how the colors were defined in 2014. This is because the Revisited articles Mark Rosewater started to publish during that time--as well as the Khans of Tarkir color interviews and the two color podcasts he also released during said year--directly imply a fresh start to the color pie. It's worth noting that later adjustments (such as those made to Green) are included.
Based off of the formula he uses in the 2014-15 articles (and has continued to use since then) we know that each color can be seperated into an end (the goal of one's life) and a mean (the way people should live). Color combinations are created by putting various ends & means together (you can have any combination of one or the other, by the way).
What are the colors' means & ends?:
White cares about "Peace" (the greater good) through "Structure" (rigid rules) (See here here, and here).
Blue cares about "Perfection" (the ability for people to improve themselves) through "Knowledge" (seeking information) (See here, here, and here).
Black believes in "Power" (control over the things in one's life) through "Opportunity" (whatever it takes) (See here and here).
Red believes in "Freedom" (following one's heart) through "Action" (acting on one's emotions) (See here).
And Green believes in "Growth" (the continuing of nature's process) through "Acceptance" (embracing the natural order and one's place in it) (See here, here, here, here, here, and here.)
In contrast, the colors also have lesser traits in their philosophies. These are tendencies assigned to the colors that (in my opinion) are reflective of their means & ends, but which the colors are not that strongly commited to. For example: Blue has a tendency to prefer geniocracy (it believes only the smartest should rule), however it can turn that aside for some forms of democracy Why? Because these are both lesser traits of Blue and they're really Blue pursuing its interest in "Knowledge."
"There's nothing more Perfect than nature. And there's nothing that has more to learn from it than nature ... Nature has endless Opportunities. And the ultimate source of Power is nature ... What's more Free than nature? What's more Peaceful than nature?"
Green, Drive to Work 574 at 30:29
Don't treat color identity as something where 'having some colors mean you have zero traits of the other colors' (aka, like the Shards of Alara). Everyone has bits of all the colors, but listing them all, all the time, isn't useful information--the labels just serve to point out when someone's means/ends align with particular colors'. Even characters in-universe can lean towards colors they don't have, but it's not part of their identity, it's simply an acknowledgement.
One should also avoid basing one's views of the color philosophies on the cards. Yes, that statement seems unusual, but consider this: by the time they're printed the cards have gone through many different hands, including those that aren't factoring in color philosophy. That's why you may find characters that have been given colors that don't actually match their ideals. I'm not saying 'never look at the cards' by the way, you just need to take them with a grain of salt.
So, when you combine various colors' main traits together, there's some interesting things worth noting.
Sometimes color combinations have center colors, like the factions from Alara or Tarkir. What constitutes center colors, I believe, is a preference for the ideals of said color(s) over the others in the combination.
It's also for the best to make sure that interpretations of color combinations aren't watered-down to be applicable to everyone--it's not much of a stance if everyone agrees with it.
In contrast to the color combinations, there's colorless. Remember, colorless is not a color. That's not me saying you can't have colorless philosophies, it's just that colorless is mutually exclusive to any color's means/ends (you can't have colors and not have colors at the same time) and one should treat it as such.
Finally, I want to note that I'm primarily talking about values, not personality. Coloring one's philosophy is fine, but attempting to align one's personality to a nonscientific system is problematic. In addition, while it's a useful tool for categorizing things, I personally don't like using the colors as a roadmap for people, characters, or factions (you do you).
That's my take on the colors. If you liked reading this I also discussed the special way to combine White & Black and its relation to four color combinations as well as the philosophy of the "color" Grue. And if you have any ideas or objections, please leave a comment below.
Thanks for reading!

2023.06.02 16:42 balphor Weekly and Monthly F2P Income Calculations

Bored and wanted to figure out pulling and spending plans a bit better so I decided to put this together. Due to the event schedule enstars runs on, calculations will be separated into non-event weeks, event weeks, and total monthly amount based on those together.
Disclaimer: I've only played engstars and only for 2 months, so I might have missed some things. Tour calculations won't be here bc I've only played one tour(antique) and wasn't paying attention to diamonds during that time. Besides that, I might have missed some things so feel free to comment if you notice mistakes.
1. Non-event weeks
Daily missions = 50 dias * 7 = 350/week
Starries = 15-100 dias/day. I'm calculating these at 15 per day = 105/week
Log-in bonus = 100
Share picture = 100
Society point bonus = 200, 1 dia ticket
Society shop = 1 dias ticket
With no new content added, the core gameplay cycle = 855 + 2 tickets(1555 dia value)
Non-event weeks add 2 songs - 1 being livefes, 1 being the previous event song getting added to the permanent pool. Tour weeks are an exception as they only add one(no event song)
S+ score * 4, pc easy normal and hard, clear x10 rewards = 170 * 3 + 120 + 50 = 680 dias for each song. If you can pc expert another 50 dias to you. I can't currently so I just calculate at what is reasonable for me to personally achieve.
In total, this adds up to 855 + (680 * 2) = 2,215 + 2 tickets(2,915 value).
2. Event weeks
Base income of 855 + 2 tickets
Event point rewards at 1.2 million pts = 700
Shop at 1000 ribbons = 900
Event story fully unlocked at 300k pts - these very in length but I'm calculating at 15 episodes = 150
Event song s+ * 4, pc easy normal hard, b combo expert = 170 * 3 + 140 + 50 = 700
Ranking rewards for highscore 5k-10k(ik these technically come the week after, but I'm including them here for organization) = 100
In total, this adds up to 3,405 + 2 tickets(4105 value).
3. Monthly income
I'm summarizing a 30-day month as 2 * non-event week + 2 * event week + 2 dailies = 11,370 + 8 tickets(12,770 value).
There's also ensemble live monthly missions if that's your jam but I'm not an expert when it comes to that. Afaik you can get 50 from 25x clear rewards, 50 from 10k total score, 50 from 7 matching missions. Also 50 from 200x clear rewards but why would you do that the queue times are So long
4. What does this mean?
Provided we get no other content 12,770 / 350 = 36 pulls per month.
Assuming you spend 10k per unit event, this also means you can get the event 5* every other banner, and every 5 months you can get 5*for both events that month. However, you'd have no dias for gacha.
This also means that in order to guarantee a 5*, you'll need to save for 8 months and 1 week. Happy saving!
I hope this post was somewhat helpful. I'll likely update it with tour information once SS Stage 1 drops on the 10th. Let me know if you have any feedback/notice mistakes

2023.06.02 16:38 Opening-Campaign-532 For anyone struggling with overwhelming feelings:

DETACHING FROM EMOTIONAL PAIN (GROUNDING)
Lisa Najavits, PhD
WHAT IS GROUNDING?
Grounding is a set of simple strategies to detach from emotional pain (for example, drug cravings,
self-harm impulses, anger, sadness). Distraction works by focusing outward on the external world—rather
than inward toward the self. You can also think of it as “distraction”, centering,” “a safe place,” looking
“outward,” or “healthy detachment.”

WHY DO GROUNDING?
When you are overwhelmed with emotional pain, you need a way to detach so that you can gain control
over your feelings and stay safe. As long as you are grounding, you cannot possibly use substances or hurt yourself. Grounding ‘anchors’ you to the present and to reality.
Many people with PTSD and substance abuse struggle with either feeling too much (overwhelming
emotions and memories) or too little (numbing and dissociation). In grounding, you attain balance
between the two—conscious of reality and able to tolerate it.

GUIDELINES
 Grounding can be done any time, any place, anywhere and no one has to know.
 Use grounding when you are: faced with a trigger, having a flashback, dissociating, having a
substance craving, or when your emotional pain goes above 6 (on a 0-10 scale). Grounding puts
healthy distance between you and these negative feelings.
 Keep your eyes open, scan the room, and turn the light on to stay in touch with the present.
 Rate your mood before and after to test whether it worked. Before grounding, rate your level of
 emotional pain (0-10, where 10 means “extreme pain”). Then re-rate it afterwards. Has it gone down?
 No talking about negative feelings or journal writing. You want to distract away from negative
 feelings, not get in touch with them.
 Stay neutral—no judgments of “good” and “bad’. For example, “The walls are blue; I dislike blue
because it reminds me of depression.” Simply say “The wafts are blue” and move on.
 Focus on the present, not the past or future.
 Note that grounding is not the same as relaxation training. Grounding is much more active, focuses
on distraction strategies and is intended to help extreme negative feelings. It is believed to be more.
effective for PTSD than relaxation training.

WAYS TO GROUND
Mental Grounding
♣ Describe your environment in detail using all your senses. For example, “The walls are white; there are
five pink chairs, there is a wooden bookshelf against the walt...” Describe objects, sounds, textures,
colors, smells, shapes, numbers and temperature. You can do this anywhere. For example, on the
subway: “I’m on the subway. I’ll see the river soon. Those are the windows. This is the bench. The
metal bar is silver. The subway map has four colors...”
♣ Play a “categories” game with yourself. Try to think of “types of dogs”, “jazz musicians”, “states that
begin with “A”, “cars”, “TV shows”, “writers”, “sports”, “songs”, “European cities.”
♣ Do an age progression. If you have regressed to a younger age (e.g., 8 years old), you can slowly work
your way backup (e.g., “I’m now 9”; “I’m now 10”; “I’m now 11”...) until you are back to your current
age.
♣ Describe an everyday activity in great detail. For example, describe a meal that you cook (e.g., First I
peel the potatoes and cut them into quarters, then I boil the water, I make an herb marinade of
oregano, basil, garlic, and olive oil...”).
♣ Imagine. Use an image: Glide along on skates away from your pain; change the TV channel to a better
show think of a wall as a buffer between you and your pain.
♣ Say a safety statement. ‘My name is _________; I am safe right now. I am in the present, not the past.

I am located in _____________ the date is _____________.
♣ Read something, saying each word to yourself. Or read each letter backwards so that you focus or the
letters and not on the meaning of words.
♣ Use humor. Think of something funny to jolt yourself out of your mood.
♣ Count to 10 or say the alphabet very s..l..o..w..l..y.
♣ Repeat a favorite saying to yourself over and over (e.g., the Serenity Prayer).

Physical Grounding
 Run cool or warm water over your hands.
 Grab tightly onto your chair as hard as you can.
 Touch various objects around you: a pen. keys, your clothing, the table, the walls. Notice textures,
colors, materials, weight, temperature. Compare objects you touch: Is one colder? Lighter?
 Dip your heels into the floor— literally “grounding” them! Notice the tension centered in your heels as
you do this. Remind yourself that you are connected to the ground.
 Carry a ground object in your pocket—a small object (a small rock, clay, ring, piece of cloth or yarn)
that you can touch whenever you feel triggered.
 Jump up and down.
 Notice your body: The weight of your body in the chair; wiggling your toes in your socks; the feel of
your back against the chair. You are connected to the world.
 Stretch. Extend your fingers, arms or legs as far as you can; roll your head around.
 Walk slowly, noticing each footstep, saying “left,” “right” with each step.
 Eat something. Describe the flavors in detail to yourself.
 Focus on your breathing. Noticing each inhale and exhale. Repeat a pleasant word to yourself on each
inhale (for example, a favorite, color or a soothing word such as “safe” or “easy”).
Soothing Grounding
♥ Say kind statements, as if you were talking to a small child. E.g.. “You are a good person going through
a hard time. You’ll get through this.
♥ Think of favorites. Think of your favorite color, animal, season, food, time of day, TV show.
♥ Picture people you care about (e.g., your children; and look at photographs of them).
♥ Remember the words to an inspiring song, quotation or poem that makes you feel better (e.g.. the
Serenity Prayer).
♥ Remember a safe place. Describe a place that you find very soothing (perhaps the beach or mountains,
or a favorite room); focus on everything about that place—the sounds, colors, shapes, objects,
textures.
♥ Say a coping statement. “I can handle this”, “This feeling will pass.”
♥ Plan out a safe treat for yourself, such as a piece of candy, a nice dinner, or a warm bath.
♥ Think of things you are looking forward to in the next week. Perhaps time with a friend or going to a
movie.

WHAT IF GROUNDING DOESN’T WORK?

♠ Practice as often as possible. Even when you don’t “need” it, so that you’ll know it by heart.
♠ Practice faster. Speeding up the pace gets you focused on the outside world quickly.
♠ Try grounding for a Iooooooonnnng time (20-30 minutes). And, repeat, repeat, repeat.
♠ Try to notice whether you do better with “physical” or “mental” grounding.
♠ Create your own methods of grounding. Any method you make up may be worth much more than
those you read here because it is yours.
♠ Start grounding early in a negative mood cycle. Start when the substance craving just starts or when
you have just started having a flashback.

2023.06.02 16:37 DepressedTransGurl How do i leave?

Hi, first of all sorry if I'm not very specific with my situation, i want to try to avoid giving information that could lead to my family knowing this account.
I am a pre-transition trans woman. I live with my mother and brother, which are very transphobic. They know what i am, and are very much against it.
I have plans to leave this place, since it's not just my family but also the place where i am that has given me a bunch of trouble with my identity, and has actively stopped me from doing any progress in my transition besides growing my hair long.
If things go well i should be able to leave and never go back by the start of next year.
Now my issue: my mother.
She has been incredibly abusive, and is the root of a lot of the traumatic experiences in my life. But she is still my mother.
My brother is basically non-existent, he does whatever my mother wants but is useless for everything else. He never needed to do anything since my mother always made me do any kind of job he didn't want to.
I am afraid that if i leave her she will get sick. I don't know how to approach it. If i tell her i will leave she will make a huge deal of it, and i know it's just her being manipulative.
I could basically just dissapear, slowly gather my stuff and leave one morning before she wakes up, but that would basically kill her.
That being said i can't stay, that's for sure.
Staying here will mean never transitioning, or doing it after so many years i don't know if I'll be alive by then. I am a woman, I want to look and talk like one, I don't want to stay in a body i hate for all my life because my family will hate me or i might get killed in my city.
If you could give me your opinion i would be very thankful, and also thank you for reading.

2023.06.02 16:36 Zealousideal-Scheme4 Herpes- how would you react?

Hello, I wanted to post this question to a large pool of people and not just the herpes subs on reddit.
I have herpes (hsv) type 1, the same strain that causes cold sores, but on the genitals. I contracted it from an ex partner who got cold sores and it lay dormant in my system for years eventually having an OB one day. I had one small OB about the size of a thumbnail, that lasted a few weeks, about a year ago and then haven't had one since. It shows differently for people, but generally it appears as a rash, followed by small blisters. Mine personally wasn't very painful, however it can be worse for others.
Interestingly, HSV1's natural habitat is the mouth region. It can also transmit to the genitals. It doesn't naturally exist there however, and as a result, transmits at a far lower rate to partners (especially after 1-2 years) than oral HSV1 (cold sores) does. The majority of new HSV1 infections are from receiving oral from a partner with cold sores than from genital sex with a person (citations online)
For both oral and genital, you can transmit hsv1 whether there is an outbreak or not, as it exhibits asymptomatic shedding when OBs are not present. After 1-2 years, genital HSV1 only sheds around 4 days per year on average and is almost dormant. Oral hsv1 transmission rates however, remain much higher given its natural habitat and frequent shedding and OBs.
I (unknowingly) potentially had it for years and had unprotected sex in monogamous relationships with multiple partners and didn't transmit it to anyone. There is countless stories on the herpes subs on reddit of long term marriages where one partner has it and one does not and it hasn't been transmitted. It goes to show that, given the stigma behind herpes, it can be somewhat of a non issue when the right precautions are taken, and has been blown out of proportion.
For context, Im male. I'm curious how people, both male and female would react in a dating scenario to being told this and what would be the best way to receive the information.
The reason I ask is, the stigma is more brutal than the virus itself. The amount of guilt that is thrown around in social media and the internet is absurd, and causes a lot of people to choose not to disclose given the prevalence of HSV1 being so common. (50 - 60% of people in the world carry it. Check stats online for further references)
From a very well health article: "One of the reasons the CDC doesn’t recommend regular testing for HSV is because of the psychological harm it can do when someone finds out they have it due to the stigma around herpes"
That means that anyone that does show symptoms or has been diagnosed has to wear the brunt of the psychological harm and are treated differently when there's a large percentage of the population blissfully unaware they already have it in either a dormant or asymptomatic state.
My view is the CDC, medical organizations and all media around the world should immediately implement a new education and testing campaign as well as open discourse on what herpes is, how it affects people, relationships, sex and mental health. The more people understand, the better off we'll all be.
Thankyou for reading

2023.06.02 16:35 Draakonys Let's have a talk - Guide to Choosing the Best Plex Server for You

Introduction:

I'm writing this tutorial to accommodate beginners and experienced users alike. If you would like to skip the introductory part and get right to the point, just look for the chapter entitled “My list of the best Plex Server devices”.
Next, I ask the subreddit admins not to remove this post and move it to the Builds megatread; have mercy.
Note: further down the line, I will refer to Plex Media Server as Plex Server and Plex Client Apps as Plex Client(s).

Plex Server vs Plex Client Overview:

When we talk about Plex, we cannot talk about the Plex Server without also talking about the Plex Clients. Both sides are equally important. However, they serve different purposes.
  1. Plex Server: This is the server component of Plex. It organizes and streams your videos, audio files, and photos from your computer or online sources to your client applications. The server software is available on various platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, certain models of NAS devices; heck, even Raspberry Pi can run Plex Server. Once installed, it catalogs your media, fetches metadata from the internet to provide additional information about your media such as cover art, summaries, ratings, etc. It also has the capability to transcode (convert on-the-fly) your media to a format that is compatible with the client device you're streaming to, making it very versatile. Finally, what makes a good Plex server is its ability to hardware transcode media content in as many streams as possible. That's what we're trying to do as cheaply as possible. Find more about the transcoding process here and know it by heart, it will be important later.
  2. Plex Clients: These are the applications you use to access your Plex Media Server. They can be installed on various devices like smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming devices (AppleTV, Nvidia Shield Pro, Roku, Amazon Fire TV Cube, etc.), gaming consoles, web browsers, and even desktop PCs. These clients fetch the content from the Plex Media Server and display it to the user. They allow you to stream your content, browse your libraries, create playlists, etc. Each Plex Client has a different set of supported video/audio codecs (formats). Why different set? Codec support depends on the underlying hardware, for example, the Nvidia Shield Pro will have a different set of supported video/audio codecs than the Amazon Fire TV Stick or LG Smart TV
To illustrate, if you install Plex Media Server on your home computer, and then install the Plex app on your smartphone, you could stream movies stored on your computer to your smartphone. The computer with the server software would be considered the Plex Server, and the smartphone with the app would be the Plex Client. The Plex Server does the heavy lifting (like file conversion) so the Plex Client(s) can have an optimized viewing or listening experience. To summarize, when we talk about Plex Clients, we are primarily talking about price and supported video/audio codecs (formats). The logic here is that the more expensive the client, the more audio/video codecs it supports. On the other hand, when we talk about the Plex servers, we talk primarily about price and performance (power). Similar to Plex Clients, the more expensive the Plex Server, the more powerful it will typically be. This relationship is not always straight forward and we will talk more about this later.

Simple Plex Setup

The simplest Plex setup would be one Plex Server and one Plex client. The simplest Plex setup is also a perfect Plex setup. If you only have one Plex Client, you can customize your audio/video media to perfectly match the codec(s) supported by that Plex Client. In such a setup, Plex Server will never need to do any transcoding because Plex Client will also play fully supported media formats. If your Plex server is never used for transcoding, then a Raspberry Pi can also be used as a good Plex server. If this is the case, why is hardly anyone talking about using Raspberry Pi as a Plex Server at all? Because what I call a simple and perfect Plex setup is just wishful thinking. We, end users, we always connect more then one Plex Client.

Realistic Plex Setup

A more realistic setup may include many different Plex Clients, like Plex Web Client, Plex TV Client, Plex Mobile/Table Client, and more frequently, Plex clients for the streaming box devices. Now remember, even if your current Plex Client device fully supports your media content, if you add another Plex Client device, it may or may not have the same codec (video/audio) support. Thus you may encounter the need for transcoding. This is no longer a simply process and devices like Raspberyy Pi will not be able to handle transcoding tasks.
This is the root of our problem and the main reason for this article. You should expect that some of your media files will require transcoding, and for video transcoding you need a machine capable enough of handling this process. More importantly, you want a machine that can hardware transcode your content, which means your Plex Server must have a dedicated hardware transcoding component. Likewise, there's a software transcoding process that requires pure CPU power, but you would be lucky to get 1-2 4K transcoding streams with modern Intel i7 or i9 CPUs. We want to avoid software transcoding, as hardware transcoding can do much more for a fraction of the power of software transcoding. For example, a 10th generation Intel i7 CPU can handle one 4K software transcoding task or 10+ 4K hardware transcoding tasks; that’s a huge difference. And before anyone comments, yes, we could make sure we only stream video/audio files that are fully (mostly) supported by all Plex Clients, but that would limit us in size, quality, and most importantly, the time it takes to make sure all the files meet the exact video/audio requirements.

Understanding Plex Server Requirements

Okay, so we've got a good handle on the importance of Plex Servers, what Plex HW transcoding is and why it's important. But now you might be asking, 'What do I need to make sure my Plex server can handle all this HW transcoding business?' Great question! Let's dive into that.Remember, your Plex server is the heart of your Plex ecosystem. It's where all your media lives, and it's the place that's doing all the hard work when it comes to streaming to your devices. When it comes to Plex server requirements, there are four main things to consider: CPU, GPU, power consumption, and storage.
To summarize, we’re looking for:

Desktop PC vs Mini PC vs NAS

My list of the best Plex Server devices:

Keep in mind that this is my list, and as such it is completely subjective. If you know of another device, mention it in the comments and I may add it to this list. Even better if you elaborate your view.
Note: Below links do not hold any tracking numbers or references.
Intel NUC Mini PCs:
Intel NUC mini PCs are often favored as Plex servers for several reasons. First, they offer relatively high-performance processors and support for more RAM compared to less expensive mini PCs like Beelink, allowing for smoother streaming and transcoding on Plex. Second, the build quality and reliability of Intel NUCs are generally regarded as superior. Third, Intel NUCs have good support for various operating systems, including those commonly used for servers. While other mini PCs can be cheaper, they may not offer the same level of performance and compatibility, which can affect the smooth running of a Plex server.
Intel Nuc 11 NUC11ATKC4 - $208 (11th gen Celeron N5105 with 8GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD)
Intel Nuc NUC11PAHi5 - $449 (11th gen i5 with 16GB DDR4 and 512 SSD)
Beelink/Minisforum Mini PCs:
To put it bluntly, when compared to Intel NUC, Beelink or MINISFORUM Mini PCs provide a similar performance at a potentially lower price point, yet still somewhat superior in quality to other cheap mini PCs from China. I'm a little split on recommending these devices; while I've never had any problems, I know some people who have. Personally I would go with Intel NUC just based on its reliability, but cheaper is cheaper.Last piece of advice, both Beelink or Minisforum come with pretty mediocre SSDs/NVMEs and RAM, and it's better (and even cheaper) to buy everything separately (barebone).
Beelink N100 - $189 (12th gen Celeron N100 with 16GB DDR4 and 500GB SSD)
Beelink Sei12 - $449 (12th gen i5 with 16GB DDR4 and 500GB NVME)
Minisforum TH80 - $384 (11th gen i7 with 16GB of DDR4 and )
Dell Optiplex Desktop PC:
Any Dell Optiplex with at least 7th gen Intel CPU. I can say that many users often choose Dell Optiplex computers due to their robustness, reliability, and most important affordability. They come with a variety of configurations that can be customized to suit the needs of a Plex server, such as good processing power, ample memory, and storage. Additionally, their size makes them a practical choice for Plex.
Refurbished DELL Optiplex 7060 - $179 (8th gen i5-8500 with 16GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD)
Refurbished DELL Optiplex 5060 - $299 (8th gen i7-8700 with 16GB DDR4 and 500GB SSD)
**Synology DS423+, Synology DS920+, QNAP TS-453be NAS’**Intel-based NAS devices are also preferred as good Plex servers for several reasons. You get all-in-one package with power-efficient 4K HW transcoding, built-in storage, and Linux-based OS.
Synology DS423 - $370 (Intel J4125 Celeron with 2GB DDR4)
Synology DS920 - Deprecated but still a fan-favorite. DS923+ switched to AMD-based CPU without iGPU so it should not be considered as a Plex Server.
QNAP TS-464 - $589 (Intel N5105 Celeron + 11th gen iGPU with 8GB DDR4)
Any custom-made Desktop PC
While custom-made desktop PCs are not my favorite option, I cannot justify not giving them a shout out here. Yes, they are big, noisy, and power hungry, but when it comes down to it, they can serve as a Plex server just as well as any mini PC. Just make sure you’re either running at least Intel 7th gen CPU (although some modern AMD CPUs will also do) or older CPU paired with at least Nvidia RTX 1050 GPU or newer.
Here's a benchmark for Nvidia GPU transcoding capabilities.
Mac Mini (Intel or Arm-based)
Mac has always been known to handle Plex Server very well.Older Intel-based Mac Minis are on the same level as Mini PCs, so what applies to Mini PCs also applies to Intel-based Mac Minis. On the other hand, even though M1 and M2 Macs are Arm-based, they offer excellent value for HW transcoding tasks. Both M1 and M2 are overkill for a Plex server and the only reason they are not higher on this chart is their price.
Mac Mini 2018 - $402 (8th gen i5 with 8GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD)
Mac Mini M1 - $430 (8GB memory and 256GG SSD)

2023.06.02 16:34 Zealousideal-Scheme4 Herpes - How would you react when told?

Phase 0) Digital Economics 101

The Digital Economics 101 module will open 1 week prior to the cohort start date. This is an onboarding module that will get you up to speed so we can get straight into the material. This will be required to finish before the start date.
  • Gain a deep understanding of all of the pieces in the digital economy.
  • Learn about the future of media and code — the front-end and backend of the internet — so you can focus your efforts.
  • Understand digital leverage, distribution, no-code tools, and digital assets so you can take part in the mental & financial wealth transfer.

Phase 1) Creating A Meaningful Niche

Every day I hear people going on and on about trying to find their niche.I also hear people talking about how they don’t know how to combine what they love talking about with what will sell. You already have the answer. You just don’t have the clarity.
  • Develop a long-term strategy to create your own niche — meaning you don’t have to worry about your “competition” playing status games.
  • Discover your life’s work, curiosities, and obsessions. I see too many people that are uncertain about this for years.
  • Cultivate and turn your vision, goals, and values into a brand that attracts an audience you love interacting with (and that will buy from you, and only you).

Phase 2) Content Strategy

There is one thing that separates those who make it in the digital economy and those who don’t.It’s the quality, articulation, and perceived originality of their content. The content you post has to make sense to the people you attract.Everyone has a different voice and tone that they resonate with. That they are congruent with and trust. It has to change their thought patterns or behavior — that’s what makes you memorable. That’s what separates you from the sea of people posting surface-level copy-cat style posts.Example and putting my money where my mouth is:
  • Become an expert-level speaker or writer on the topics you care about.
  • Never run out of content ideas for your posts or promotions (without using content templates — that’s how you stay a commodity).
  • Create posts, blogs, tweets, images, and videos that resonate with other’s on a deep level. People will actually ask you how you got so good at what you do.
  • Separate yourself from the ocean of B-tier creators that struggle to sell their products, services, andhave their ideas stick in the head of their audience.
  • Implement our Epistemic Research Method — which is just a fancy way of saying scientific research method… but it’s for researching your mind to craft brilliant content and product ideas.

Phase 3) Crafting Your Offer

Most people are sitting on a goldmine of skills, experience, and knowledge (that they can use to help people 1-2 steps behind them). That is what people pay for.Considering 95% of the market are beginners… if you are good at something, you can help them get to your level (no matter how “basic” you think the information is).Do you not watch basic content all day anyway? People don’t want new information, they want to be reminded of what works.
  • Use our Minimum Viable Offer strategy to start monetizing immediately (and have something to improve over time, rather than procrastinating until it’s perfect).
  • Have a strategy for reducing the time you spend working over time (as you build leverage and improve your offer).
  • Know how to create your own customers from the audience you are building, instead of “finding” the right customer for your offer.
  • Take the guesswork out of building coaching, consulting, or digital product offers.

Phase 4) Marketing Strategy

You aren’t making money because you aren’t promoting yourself or your offer. That is literally the only way to make money. Have something desirable and consistently put it in front of peoples’ faces. In Phase 4, I will show you how to systemize, automate, and be consistent with simple promotions. You will be able to make money without having the chance of forgetting to do it (or letting fear of failure get in the way).
  • Learn to sell on social media, in your writing, and across different platforms.
  • Have consistent sales coming in while focusing on your meaningful message (no need to sound salesy all the time).
  • Learn advanced automation strategies that you can implement at your own pace, especially once you validate your offer.

Bonus) The Creator Command Center

The Creator Command Center is a Notion template that houses all of the systems. This is how you will manage your brand, content, offer creation, marketing strategy, and systemized promotions for consistent sales.

Bonus) Live Product Build & Launch

In the first Digital Economics Cohort, I built out my course The 2 Hour Writer.I have videos showing how I build it with the strategies in phase 3 and 4.There is a bonus module that shows how I had an $85,000 launch that resulted in my first $100K month.I did this to prove the strategies inside Digital Economics work if you stick to the plan. And, this past Black Friday, I blew my that monthly high out of the water in 4 days. That’s the power of these strategies if you stay consistent with your life’s work.

2023.06.02 16:28 SilverHoard D7 visa process from Belgium

Boom dia, everyone! My parents would like to retire in Portugal soon. My mother is Belgian and with her EU passport everything seems to be quite easy to arrange. However, my father is English and now needs a D7 visa, which turns out to be less easy. The Portuguese consulate in Brussels refuses to provide information and simply says to google it, which we have already done a lot, but we still have some questions. Hopefully someone here has experience with this or can recommend a service?
My parents want to buy a house there, preferably without renting first. This means that they will not have a domicile address. But for the D7 you apparently have to have a Portuguese domicile during your application. In other words, he still cannot start the D7 application until he has actually moved or rented or bought something? Well? We thought it would be easier just like the NIF and bank account to arrange this in advance before moving to Portugal, so that that was already behind us. But now with the D7 we're not sure how to go about it.
Does he have to move to Portugal to get a place of residence and only then start the D7 application? Then he may have to fly over to Belgium several times in the hope of getting it arranged at the Belgian consulate. Or can he already start the process while in Belgium and then move later, when they are ready? But already have the D7 in his back pocket?
And then the question is, how long does the process from application to release take? And how long will it be valid? We sometimes read 4 months, sometimes a year, and sometimes two years ... All very vague.
Does anyone happen to have experience with this? Or who can point us in the right direction? Are there reliable services that help with this? Thank you in advance!

2023.06.02 16:27 hdmx539 I'm afraid I may not find an attorney for my situation.(TX)

First and foremost, I'm not looking for legal advice as I am in search of a lawyer. I honestly don't even know if you all need this information but I am flummoxed here and a bit scared.
Here's the situation. This is in Texas. Mods, if this isn't appropriate I'll delete it.
I'm supposed to be the owner of a lot in a major city here, there is no structure on it but I would like to build. It's in a residential neighborhood that is starting down the road of gentrification. If you look up the property it has my name on it, but the deed is a "quit claim" deed.
Ugh. Yes, I know.😔
This is on my mother's side. She was 3 of NINE children. I am her only child, many of her siblings went on to have large families themselves (like, 5 to 7 children large). As of now, only 2 of her siblings remain.
Grandpa (mom's father) purchased the small property, which had a small house at the time, so my mother could move in when she got married. She never did. Without going into the details which are unnecessary here, she did move in eventually, but decades later. When grandpa died grandma was the only deed holder. When grandma died, everyone (i.e. my mother's siblings), agreed she could have it. We were extremely poor and moved back only because we had become homeless and they were doing alright.
My mother refused to get the deed properly in her name. I have ZERO idea why and it really bothered me. So now I am here to get this fixed since I want to build on the property. When she died in '09 the property was still NOT in her name but since it was supposed to be my property, I was fully responsible for it. I've paid taxes on it, keep the property clear of vegetation, I even paid the fine the city levied when they had to raze it. I didn't want it to happen but because the property was STILL in grandma's name they refused to put my address in another city hours away so I could get any and all notices. But I still paid it.
One of my mother's sisters was named exactly like my grandmother's, even down to the spelling. When she got notice of this fine (an uncle got one too and called me about it as well) my aunt freaked out saying she didn't have the money and now the city was sending her this bill. I reassured her I'd take care of it. That was also the first time I heard about it. This documentation is filed with the county and shows as paid. I have financial proof I paid somewhere. This was in the 2010s, something like, 2012, I think.
Everyone in my family, even friends and coworkers I'd talk to about this bit of property would tell me to sell, it wasn't worth even the taxes (they'd be like, a couple hundred bucks a year), and considering the neighborhood it's not even worth building. (It was so bad the house next door had a drive by shooting and I found myself laying on the floor. Fortunately no stray bullets hit the house.) For years I'd get calls asking if I want to sell. I never did. For me, I think I may eventually land there when I'm old old (I'm just "old" now😅) because all of my family are there.
Here it is now 2023 and I have the means and ability to finally build on the lot. The problem is the deed.
I mentioned that my aunt who freaked out has the same exact name as grandmother. So when that happened in 2012, without telling me and after she had called and I told her I'd pay the bill, and did so, a couple of weeks later I'm on the county tax appraisal site and I see the name on the deed. All of a sudden I see my name as the owner, the deed is titled "quit claim," something like that. So I went searching to see, what happened on the county's court documentation website. Turns out my aunt with grandma's name did a "quit claim" deed to me. I know for an absolute fact that she did that believing she would no longer be responsible for the bill from the city and put all of the financial responsibility on me. I also found another quit claim deed to me from an aunt who is widowed. She married my mother's brother. My assumption here is that she was also under the impression she was the only "heir" to her husband's portion of this small piece of property since her husband (my uncle, mom's brother) has already passed away.
Y'all. I have 40 some odd cousins, most of whose parents have passed away with the exception of one other surviving aunt (who is in the throes of dementia) and an uncle. He's fine and doing great. Some of those cousins are no longer in contact with the rest of us.
Yeah, this is a mess. I know no title company would touch this deed and I also know that I can't build there until I get it firmly in my name.
I contacted a real estate / probate lawyer in that city. We had a consultation and when I explained the situation she agreed that what likely happened with the title was a court clerk seeing her name on the quit claim deed, seeing grandma's name as the property owner, and just assumed they were the same person. She said she'd consult with her mentor attorney on what to do. When I hadn't heard back from her in a couple of weeks, far longer than she said she'd get back to me I knew she wasn't going to take this. I still emailed her to ask her and she said she wouldn't be able to take the case. I did ask for a recommendation, which I got and will be calling them.
During the consultation she mentioned "suit to quiet title" and that we'd have to contact all remaining relatives, have them sign a notarized.... affidavit something? and then we can get the deed in my name with a warranty deed. I have NO IDEA how we'd do that because I can think of at least 4 cousins that are gone to the ether. I don't even know if they're still alive. I do have contact with at least two siblings from that family so I'm thinking she would very likely know.
My first question is ... will I find an attorney to take on this mess? Is this going to be incredibly expensive? I mean, I can manage and my husband and I are committed to get this done properly, but I do not have unlimited funds, either. Also, I ask this knowing that I'd take the recommendation of the attorney I do get to retain, but isn't there an easier way to do this without contacting so many people who have rights and claims to this property?
Speaking of which - while it is understood with my family that this property is solely mine - I have some other cousins who I fear may not so easily give up their claim considering the fact that since 2019 the property value has gone up to over 3 times it's value due to that area being really "hot" and will get even more popular. (Which is why I want to build ASAP so building there won't get so expensive.) The attorney I consulted said that if those family decide to be greedy about this, we can show them their part of the financial responsibilities with regards to the taxes I have paid and that $5k fine the city levied, all of which I have paid without any money from any other family member since 2010 if they want me to "buy" out their claim before relinquishing it. I don't think these cousins would do that, but I'm just trying to prepare for the worst. I don't even want anyone joking about it.
So. Is there no simpler way of doing this? Should I prepare to have to look for family members who have a rightful claim? What if someone does resist wanting a "pay out?"
Most importantly, is this too much of a mess that it'll be difficult to find a lawyer? Am I even looking for the right type of lawyer by looking for a real estate lawyer? Or is it probate? I don't even know if the property went through probate in the 90s when my grandmother died.
I hope this isn't too long or too much info. I'm a bit discouraged. Thank you.

2023.06.02 16:25 VirtualSalamander772 NASA Denies Ever Discussing UAP/UFO

NASA Denies Ever Discussing UAP/UFO
Below is what Scott Kelly, retired astronaut (and also the brother of Mark Kelly, former NASA astronaut and US Senator) said, on the record (as confirmed by Daniel Evans in his opening remarks), in front of a panel of NASA appointed experts and NASA representatives. In this capacity and setting, this is an official statement on behalf of NASA. It's worthwhile to note that nobody spoke up after to clarify or correct his statement. This is his first statement:
“…in my 20 years at NASA, no one, either officially or unofficially, in my recollection, have ever discussed, or briefed us, or had any kind of discussions about anything that would be considered a UAP or UFO or anything like that."
He repeated the statement, and added an additional bit about extraterrestrial origin (but note that it was stated as an additional category, not a qualifier):
“…In my experience of being in astronaut office (sic) for 20 years, there was never any formal or informal discussions, at all, about UAP or UFOs or anyone reporting anything that would suggest something from, you know, beyond our planet.”
Here are my thoughts on Scott Kelly's (NASA's) on the record official comments about zero UFO/UAP discussions at NASA from 1996-2016:
1) NASA's mission is "to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research". The acronym "NASA" stands for "National Aeronautics and Space Administration". Aeronautics is "the science or art involved with the study, design, and manufacturing of air flight–capable machines, and the techniques of operating aircraft and rockets within the atmosphere". Let's assume for a moment that UAP are never seen in space, because then clearly that would fall into NASA's scope. But 75+ years of sightings, many by military and some by NASA astronauts, have apparently been ignored by NASA (or at least the 20 years Scott Kelly was there - 1996-2016) despite clearly being potentially worthy of scientific study, especially if they are unknown flight capable craft, regardless of the nature or origin. We know they are worthy of study, because NASA has recently said so, and is in fact studying them now.
2) NASA wants us to believe that they suddenly woke up one day and said, "Hey, have you heard of UFO's? Maybe we should take a look at this stuff that people have been seeing all over the world for 75+ years". This means that they ignored Project Sign, Project Grudge, Project Bluebook, AATIP, UAPTF, Bob Lazar (whether you believe him or not), Phoenix Lights, etc. They were apparently not even aware of these things, since they weren't discussed at NASA, ever, at all, formally or informally, in any context or setting, from 1996-2016.
3) Scott Kelly's comments mean that we're supposed to believe that AATIP, the Air Force, the CIA, foreign governments, other space agencies, The Five Eyes, etc. never once reached out to NASA during 1996-2016 for help analyzing any UAP evidence, despite their expertise in aeronautic and space matters, even to ask them if some of these observed phenomenon were theirs or possibly from another foreign space agency.
4) NASA states that it wants to "reduce the stigma" associated with reporting UAP. However, based on Scott Kelly's statements, we now know that NASA has NEVER taken this subject seriously as a valid avenue for scientific study. But now suddenly they want others to take it seriously, and guys, they're here to help. However, if Scott Kelly's statements are true, it means that NASA has contributed to the stigma, and has actively or passively ignored and suppressed this subject as a valid topic of discussion and research within NASA.
5) Scott Kelly wants us to believe that in his 20 years with NASA (1996-2016), he has never, not once, ever heard anyone talking formally or informally about the numerous NASA astronauts who have come forward publicly and discussed UFOs. There have only been 334 US astronauts. That's a pretty small club. So when several of your most famous astronauts are going on TV shows and talking about UFOs seen on missions, he's saying that not one time, in a briefing, at the water cooler, over drinks, or a NASA picnic, never has anyone ever discussed what these guys have been saying.
6) If what Scott Kelly is saying is true, and UAP are eventually determined to be a truly new phenomenon, then they have wasted an untold amount of time and taxpayer money by deliberately ignoring this subject. They could have been investing resources into this for decades, but now they are playing catch-up with a tiny fraction of their budget. They spent well over $500 BILLION since 1958, and seemingly didn't use a single dollar on the scientific study of UFO/UAP until 2023. UAP are apparently are now admittedly a real thing, and according to them, definitely worthy of scientific study. This means it has always been a real thing worthy of scientific study. If true, this is an admission of incompetence of a staggering magnitude.
7) Scott Kelly's comments mean that at no point, during any mission from 1996-2016, was an object or phenomenon seen which was unexplained (UAP/UFO), even if that phenomenon or object was later identified.
8) Now some of you may say "Well, this was just Scott Kelly's personal experience, and perhaps he just wasn't involved in those discussions, or maybe they happened before he was with NASA". Here's the problem with that. In order for his statement to be true, it would mean that his brother never shared anything with him that falls into the categories he mentioned. It would also mean that during the preparation and research conducted by this NASA appointed team since October 2022, nobody on the panel was made aware of any activities that fall into those categories. Surely the NASA appointed UAP research team would have asked the most basic question regarding past and current UAP/UFO activities within NASA in preparation for this public meeting, and in preparation for their upcoming report. If they haven't asked those questions, then this study is a sham. If they haven't been provided that information proactively by NASA, then this study is a sham. Further, if anyone on the panel was aware of anything which contradicted Scott Kelly's statement, and they remained silent during and after hearing him make those broad sweeping statements, they had an obligation to speak up to correct the record. Otherwise, Daniel Evans statement "this agency (NASA) is absolutely cast iron committed to openness and transparency" is false.
9) Some of you may say: “Well, Scott Kelly doesn’t speak for all of NASA”. He made these comments in response to a question from the public submitted to NASA, at a NASA public meeting, as an appointed NASA expert for this panel/subject, on stage at a televised event, “on the record”, in front of numerous NASA appointed experts and NASA officials and employees. This is about as official a statement for NASA as it gets. If his statement was false, incomplete or in any way misleading, NASA and this panel had an obligation to correct the record. They did not.
10) I expect someone to say “Well there was no good data for them to take this subject seriously”. That’s not now science works. Scientists don’t wait for the data to come to them, you need to gather the data, which is the fundamental takeaway from this entire public meeting as repeated several times by the panel's chairman, astrophysicist David Spergel.
I'm sure many of you will nitpick the words I've used above and offer tiny corrections and clever rebuttals, but at the core, Scott Kelly's comments strain credibility beyond belief and should be challenged. I'm certain that his statements can be easily disproved with a FOIA request.
Black Vault, do your thing.

2023.06.02 16:22 ashim66 Another h1b edge case

This is a continuation of the previous post for a very specific case where multiple filings are valid.
Condition: atleast one employer where lottery is picked is completely legit. Let's call this company A. All other companies are not legit: B, C, D etc.
Now if you were to look at the conditions of fraud or misrepresentation, it lists 5 to 7 conditions (Google USCIS fraud and misrepresentation to get the page with this info).
ALL conditions need to be satisfied for a charge of fraud or misrepresentation.
One of these is "misrepresentation must be material". This means that the potentially wrong information must have an effect on the immigration benefit (in this case : approved H1b status in the US). That is, if the wrong info was not provided, the outcome would be different (that is, H1b status would not be approved).
But simple logical reasoning states that if you need only one approved petition to get the immigration benefit (valid h1b status) and the lottery process is random and independent, then having even 1 legitimate employer lottery win ensures that all other lottery results are immaterial.
Therefore, misrepresentation cannot be charged for lottery entries of companies B, C etc because they are immaterial to the lottery outcome (since it is fixed regardless of existence of company B, C etc lottery registration).

2023.06.02 16:21 AlarmingStress24 (Our) dog bit a powerline worker!

Help me please.
5 y/o German Shepherd.
Important Information: We live in rural New York. The dog is frequently off leash, as it is our property, and he knows not to go in the road. He has never bitten someone. We had to acquire insurance for the dog when we moved here. He is up to date with his rabies shots.
The Story: Worker calls my mom to let her know he is coming by to fix what had been broken (the powerline has been down and on our property for almost a week at this point). My dad is outside working on the yard with the dog free-roaming on the property. My dad and mom greet the man, exchange pleasantries, offer him a soda. That's when our dog just... bit him? For like, no reason? He has never been aggressive with strangers. He jumps and wants to play usually, so this is weird. My mom and dad immediately offer assistance, get the dog inside. They asked if he wanted to call the police or go to the hospital, he says no. He's (rightfully) pissed off, but he said no. From what my dad could tell, it looked like he did indeed get him pretty good, but not necessarily enough for a hospital visit.
The next day, my parents get a 10-day confinement paper from our county. He is not to be outside off leash, not to leave the county, nothing, for ten days. My mother had apparently called animal control on the dog before (my mom hates the dog and the dog hates her), so we were already floating around in some system before this.
Now, I don't know what is going to happen. We're all worried we're gonna be sued, the dog's gonna get taken away, they'll put him down, etc. Honestly though, I think I'm the only one worried about the dog.
My parents don't like or want our dog anymore. I'm worried that if we don't have him, he'll just rot in a shelter somewhere until eventually someone puts him down. He's a good boy, and this is just... a lot. He has a mean streak in him, and he takes no nonsense, but for him to act like that is just beyond what I would have expected from him.
Does anyone have any advice on where to expect this to go from here? Is our family about to catch a lawsuit? I am stressed. I don't know what to say. We don't want him to do this again to someone else or another dog, and I genuinely just don't think we can handle this dog in general. We've had him since he was a wee pup, and my parents just do not want anything to do with him anymore.

The start of the game was in a train station I think, and the main character was a detective with sunglasses and wearing a brown coat, I remember you got into a train and taken to a skyscraper where you were given information (can't remember what)
There was also a level where you would go to an area that looked Japanese, where you'd go into a Japanese restaurant and fight loads of people?
The characters were flat but were 3d, didn't have any feet or arms and I think their heads were floating above their body?
At the end of the game, you're in some sort of factory, and your life flashes before your eyes - that's all I can remember

2023.06.02 16:18 MeowCatalog What are Azure/OpenAI enterprise products and how much do they cost?

We've analyzed public data to provide insights into the pricing of AI services, which can be confusing due to the lack of transparency on Microsoft's website. We've identified over 40 products across various AI models, such as Davinci, Babbage, Cushman, Ada, and Curie, offering a range of services, including base units, fine-tuned models, deployment hosting, training, and tokens.
The products provided involve the following AI models:
  1. Davinci: A highly advanced and versatile AI model, suitable for a wide range of tasks, such as natural language understanding, summarization, and translation.
  2. Babbage: A powerful AI model designed for tasks that require moderate complexity and capabilities, such as sentiment analysis and text classification.
  3. Cushman: An AI model primarily focused on code-related tasks, such as code completion, bug detection, and code generation.
  4. Ada: A general-purpose AI model, suitable for various text-related tasks, including text generation, classification, and information extraction.
  5. Curie: Another versatile AI model, designed for tasks requiring intermediate capabilities, such as content generation and question-answering.
The products offered include base units, fine-tuned models, deployment hosting, training, and tokens for each of these AI models. Some products are in preview, while others require an Enterprise Agreement. The services provide customers with flexible options to utilize the models for various use cases, from text processing to code generation.
When a service is priced by tokens and hours, it means that the cost of using the service is determined based on two factors: the number of tokens processed and the amount of time (in hours) it takes to use the service.
  1. Tokens are units of text that an AI model processes. In the context of natural language processing, a token can be a word, a subword, or a character, depending on the model's tokenization method. For instance, when an AI model processes a text, it breaks the text into smaller units (tokens), and the total number of tokens generated affects the cost of the service.
  2. Hours refer to the duration of time spent using the service. This can be the time spent training an AI model, deploying it, or running inference tasks. The longer the usage duration, the higher the cost.

2023.06.02 16:17 amAProgrammer Information I collected about Muhammad Asad's tafseer on Women's Veil

So, I took an attempt to find out more information about the interpretation of Muhammad Asad on the verse of awrah. As this mentions quotations from early scholars about dependence on social views women's veil, which is one of our core point of contradiction with the conservative community.
I will start off by the footnote Asad has put:
My interpolation of the word "decently" reflects the interpretation of the phrase illa ma zahara minha by several of the earliest Islamic scholars, and particularly by Al-Qiffal (quoted by Razi), as "that which a human being may openly show in accordance with prevailing custom (al-'adah al-jariyah)". Although the traditional exponents of Islamic Law have for centuries been inclined to restrict the definition of "what may [decently] be apparent" to a woman's face, hands and feet--and sometimes even less than that--we may safely assume that the meaning of illa ma zahara minha is much wider, and that the deliberate vagueness of this phrase is meant to allow for all the time-bound changes that are necessary for man's moral and social growth. The pivotal clause in the above injunction is the demand, addressed in identical terms to men as well as to women, to "lower their gaze and be mindful of their chastity": and this determines the extent of what, at any given time, may legitimately--i.e., in consonance with the Qur'anic principles of social morality--be considered "decent" or "indecent" in a person's outward appearance
I didn't know, he actually took this opinion from really famous tafseer book Tafsir Al Kabir also known as Mafatih al-Ghayb written by Fakhr Al Din Al Razi. Know more about him here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fakhr_al-Din_al-Razi
Al Razi quoted an earlier scholar named Al Qiffal. As far as I have found, he is Al Qaffal Al Marwazi, a prominent Shafii scholar. More information about him: https://islamqa.org/shafii/shafiifiqh/30196/the-imam-abu-bakr-al-qaffal-al-kabir-ash-shashi/
Alright, now here is the tafseer that is our point of interest: https://quran-tafsir.net/alrazy/sura24-aya31.html#:%7E:text=%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%A3%D9%84%D8%A9%20%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AB%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A%D8%A9%20%3A%20%D8%A7%D8%AE%D8%AA%D9%84%D9%81%D9%88%D8%A7%20%D9%81%D9%8A%20%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AF,%D9%83%D8%B4%D9%81%20%D9%85%D8%A7%20%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%AA%D9%8A%D8%AF%20%D9%83%D8%B4%D9%81%D9%87%20%D9%88%D8%A3%D8%AF%D8%AA
This book is also available at shamela.ws
Here is what Al Razi said about what is permissible to show:
Al-Qaffal said the meaning of the verse is whatever a person reveals in his usual habits and tasks, and that is the face and palms for the women, and for the men the face, hands and feet. so the men and women were ordered to cover what necessity does not lead to revealing it and were given permission to reveal what they used to reveal out of necessity since the laws of Islam are easy. And since the appearance of the face and hands is a necessity for women no wonder the scholars agreed that they are not awrah.
However, he later says,
It is permissible to look at the adornment of her face, such as tattoos and dimples, and the adornment of her body, such as pigments, rings, and clothes. The reason for the permissibility of looking at her is that it is embarrassing because the woman must handle things with her hands and the need to uncover her face in testimony, trial and marriage.
These are not translated by me. First one is from another reddit post, second one is by google. The phrase he used which is actually mentioned by Asad is this: العادة الجارية
العادة means normally, usually, traditionally, typically. (https://dictionary.reverso.net/arabic-english/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%A9)
And the word الجارية means ongoing, current (https://dictionary.reverso.net/arabic-english/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9)
So, as a phrase it may mean - (body parts) that are taken to be normal currently, ongoing tradition. Asad has put it as "prevailing custom" which definitely matches up.
Al Razi actually mentions two points to determine what can be shown. First he quotes Al Qiffal, whatever a person reveals according to what is taken to be usual currently. Then, Al razi himself mentions whatever is needed to reveal considering necessity. It's important to note that Al Qiffal didn't bring the topic of necessity. He only talked about the norm of that time.
Now, about the part Al Razi wrote later, it sounds like he was not taking it that way. Once again, it's important to note, he actually wrote why other scholars allowed the face and hands to be shown. He didn't contradict the topic of prevailing custom.
Echoing his reasoning, If it's hard to work(not impossible) with hands covered, it can be said that working with a head covering is also hard(not impossible). Thus, if someone finds it difficult, she can easily take it off.
Thus, I think, both Al Qiffal and Al Razi had an opinion that aligns with our current view on Hijab.
Still one more topic to go, Asad mentioned there are more early scholars with this view. I have no information on them. So, that can be another research topic.
Would love to know your opinions and any more extra information on this.

2023.06.02 16:16 jacobn28 [REQ] ($75) - (Williamsport, PA) (Repayment of $100 on Friday, June 9th)

Hey there! Looking for some help with bills and also to establish some more credit on this sub. I borrowed once before about a year ago and it was paid back on time and in full. Search my username in the sub for confirmation.
So, my student loans recently went up (again, grrr) and I’m in-between a long stretch of paychecks. My company pays “twice a month” instead of bi-weekly, so that means I sometimes go 2 1/2 to 3 weeks without a paycheck. This, combined with my student loans, has me out of money until next Friday. I just need some extra cash to help cover some bills until my next paycheck. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I assure you will be paid in full on June 9. I can provide any identifying information you need.
Thanks for reading!
