Supply System Rant
2023.05.30 04:56 BillyJohnson367 Supply System Rant
I'm on edge with the new supply system.
On one hand, I do like how fleshed out it has become. Supply coming from hubs and ports, railroads and sea access connecting those nodes to the capital and what not.
On the other, I hate how supply from a hub or port is spread out into tiles/provinces where it's not needed. For example, level 1 railway or river access gives you 15 supply, but that supply is spread out 4 tiles wide (if possible). Without trucks or modifiers this supply is concentrated in the center. Motorizations brings this supply further out.
My problem is that hubs and ports shouldn't be sending supply to tiles/provinces that do not need it. Meaning there is a lot of wasted supply just spread out for no reason. Imagine your troops going hungry because the logistics department is sending food and water to a forest and dropping it off to rot and spoil.
I don't want to hate this new system. With hubs being 20000 IC, I played the game like the developers wanted me to. Build up railway and increase motorization. That didn't do much though. Even with building up railway to increase the supply cap from the hub the supply still spread out in provinces with no troops and therefore no use. Trucks only try to level the supply out further from the center - not increase it. Even with +100% infrastructure it didn't do much.
What I don't understand is the supply in your capital. I could build 400 factories and have the capital supply say 170 supply cap but that doesn't really show in the tiles.
What I've come to understand is that the reason Germany looks so green and Russia so blue is because the number of supply hubs that overlap each other's range. You can go into Germany and find several sources of supply. So no wonder one province gets 10 supply because there's 4-5 hubs bringing supply there. In Russia, you may be lucky to get two.
But if this is the case and the only real beneficial way to increase supply is with building more hubs or ports, why did Paradox make it a point to make hubs so expensive? I've even heard some of the devs wanted there to be no supply hubs to be buildable.
I've seen some argue that ports are a problem because you can build so many of them for less than a hub and get a lot of supply. But why punish the player for fixing their supply issue? Isn't that the point of this new game mechanic? To flesh out the supply to troops and make it more interesting and fun?
Armies will grow bigger. More supply will be needed. More hubs and railroads will need to be built. I don't understand why a front needs to stall for 3-4 months for a supply hub.
TL;DR
- I think supply in provinces without troops to consume it is wasteful making improving railways and motorization kind of fruitless effort. Meaning supply hubs and ports are the only real game changers. Perhaps supply hubs with their range provide supply as a State supply stat so no supply is wasted. Kind of like population size and air transports provide state-based supply but aren't distributed per tile but go straight to the troops that need it. Depending on where the tiles are is where each State gets supply from a hub.
- I do like how supply is very much relevant more so than previous versions of the game, but right now it seems like Paradox wants it to be a forever issue in the sense that you can't really fix your supply situation without hubs and ports and we'll make hubs 20000 IC so it's much harder.

2023.05.30 02:10 takaiishi Family got a new dog and introduced him to my cat in a way that I think scared the cat. I'm a bit concerned now and don't know where to go from here.
Apologies for the long post, there will be a tl;dr at the bottom. A little bit of backstory: my cat is a 12 year old Norwegian forest cat and we have had him since 2011, when he was just a kitten. We had a dog at the time who passed last August. My mom and stepdad adopted a new dog, a 12 year old chihuahua, in October. I was away at college so I don't know how they introduced them, but I know the cat was very territorial at first and would try to attack the dog. Now they tolerate each other. They're not best friends, but they can coexist in peace.
Yesterday, I found out they were adopting another dog, a 6 year old mini pin. He's lighter than my old dog but a bit taller, and slightly larger than my cat. I was at work when they brought him home today. On my way home, I found out that they introduced the new dog to my cat just by plopping them both in the same room. According to my family, it seemed fine at first; they were touching noses and seemed relaxed around each other until my cat started growling under his breath and ran upstairs and hid.
I got home and after meeting the new dog, I found my cat hiding deep in a closet upstairs. I brought him downstairs into my side of the house (I live in an attached in-law style apartment). You have to cross the living room and kitchen to get from the upstairs to my side, and he was
terrified when I brought him down the stairs. He burrowed his head into my armpit, something he has never done before while carrying him. He was scratching me as I brought him over, also something he has never done before. He only ever scratches/claws at you if he's scared or
really hungry. He wasn't like this with the dog we got in October (I think because that dog is a chihuahua and much smaller than my cat).
I told my mom to wait and let me introduce them as I was afraid something like this would occur, but I digress. I brought over some cat food, water, and a litter box to my side of the house for a safe space for the cat. The new dog will not be allowed on this side of the house for the time being.
I'm not really sure where to go from here. I wanted to introduce them slowly, not in a feast or famine style. The somewhat good news is the dog was simply curious about the cat; he was not aggressive at all. He wanted to play, but obviously cats are not the same as dogs and my cat doesn't understand that. I'm afraid this traumatized the cat. He was hiding under a table on my side of the house, again something he never does. He's calmed down at the time of writing this, but is it even possible to re-introduce them in a proper fashion? I'm at a loss. I found
this comment in a previous Reddit thread that I think is useful. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
TL;DR: Parents brought home a new 6 year old dog, introduced them to my 12 year old cat by plopping them in the same room, cat is now terrified to go over to the main area of the house and I don't know what to do in this situation.

2023.05.30 00:52 TheScruffinator2567 Mod 's that improve Superb Survivors?
I've been having a lot of issues with the superb survivors mod despite how fun it is, and these issues sometimes lead to a really good long-lasting run ending abruptly. Just yesterday I lost a really good game where I had a survivor group of 4 including myself, and we were living in a warehouse full of farming supplies out in the forest. I heard gunshots right outside and so I stepped outside with my pistol ready (a revolver with 5/6 rounds in it) and looked around. Just as I spotted the guy firing, he shot and killed one of my men, and hit me in the leg. I managed to make it behind a box truck where I crouched and started patching myself up, however, as I was patching myself up I watched 4 more "Lodged Bullet" indicators appear, with no gunshoot sound or anything. and so I popped out of cover, shot the hostile 5 times (all 5 shots landed and she had no armor) and then got killed, and while I was dead another survivor of mine stabbed her 6 times with a spear (of which he's level 4 with) before she killed him with the soundless pistol as well. So not only do survivor guns almost never actually make noise, but they have twice as much accuracy as the veteran career, and take 10 bullets to kill. Is there any mod/addon that fixes these things? They're completely gamebreaking.
TL;DR : Superb Survivors have way too much health and are way too accurate with firearms. Leading to an unassuming young woman in a dress to actually be a bulletproof tank with aiming level 10.

2023.05.29 22:22 L_i_S_A123 When SO bottles up things, goes on a tangent, i started the conversation talking about my feelings and hopes and it turned into this:
Long read, with paragraphs. However, please read. Please help figure this out.
Together for 18 yrs, married for almost 16 yrs. In the last few years, we have had a fair share of communication breakdowns. I have written about it and gotten great feedback. I do notice it has been a pattern of what occurs when I am talking about my feelings and hopes and instead of hearing me, he interrupt, his tone of voice changes and then he flips it into something unattractive.
Things that have helped: therapy and learning many tools. Learning The 5 Love Languages. Date night. However, we don't always apply or do them all the time. It's like we forget to use them, or do them or have them on the back burner. Going to our church-marriage group has helped, I believe. Me making boundaries.
Things that haven't helped: being called a bitch, his tone of voice and mine, his denial. Him keeping score and him saying things out of anger. Him threatening to leave for a hotel because I was asking questions to process so I could let it go. I let the issues go on before calling a break( learned in therapy), and me wanting to figure it all out at one time.
Here's an example from a few hours ago:
We have been enjoying the day together. I ran up to the market while he was mowing the lawn and when I got home, we had lunch. After lunch, we headed back outside to pick up twigs and down wood, trying to get a burn pile together. He had not been quiet earlier. Not did he say he wanted to relax? He said no. Wants to get it down and then he will. Because he was quiet, I asked, what's up? Did something happen when I was at the market? I said it feels like you're avoiding me, he said in a tone of voice he was treading lightly. I said it feels like you are ignoring me. (Treading lightly is a tool learned in therapy that he applies overly before his period starts). However, not all pms are the same. Most every weekend, I look forward to spending quality time with him and our family out in the yard. It doesn't feel like enough quality time between us, our work and the other living things we juggle and family time.
I was in the same area that my SO was. He knew I was there. However, maybe I didn't realize I was that close. He tosses a large branch and the branch swipes my face. Gratefully no cuts. I said ouch. It was as if SO was not mindful of me saying ouch or being that close. I expected him to say something, and I started crying, asking him for some compassion in a normal tone. So instead of asking if I was okay, he raised his voice and started talking about things unrelated to what I had just said. It appears he has resentments because it had nothing to do with the present moment conversation, and when I have resentments, I do the same thing. However, he said he doesn't.
At this moment, he's going on a tangent and sounds angry. I asked him why he was bringing other things into this conversation. I wondered if he had anything he needed to talk about and he said no.
Before long, he gets mean, telling me I am a bitch every PMS and that I am in denial about it or not honest with myself and or delusional because I do not own it and I always deny it. I ask him to stop projecting his stuff onto me.
He says I am constantly correcting him and criticizing him. I told him I was not the one being mean and saying hurtful things and please stop. I talked about my feelings and hopes about the branch, and then you snapped with your stuff. How is that being a bitch?? He did apologize about that one. I asked questions to clarify how my brain works so that I could understand his point of view. It's as if he thinks these are correcting and destructive criticism. I don't know why he takes what I have to say like it's a personal attack instead of objectively.
No, denial here about anything. I am fully aware of who I am, what I do and don’t, know my body works and how I can get before my period. At this point, I was in a good mood. However, when his tone of voice changed, so did mine, like he was inviting me to be at his level. At this point, I am not a happy camper. So he escalates a little more by threatening to leave for the night if I won't stop talking. So I stopped talking so he doesn't go.
I am taking a break from it. I am trying to make sense of it. tl;dr: Is there something more going on with him?? I have asked him several times, and he says no. Is he in denial? He does have depression and low self-esteem and has a habit of taking constructive criticism, not objectively and reacting emotionally. I am not sure what to do at this point. I need help figuring this out because things don't add up. This is our third like this year. It's overwhelming and confusing.
Be kind in helping, please. I already feel down, yet open to constructive feedback.

2023.05.29 21:26 AzelfWillpower [TotK] A theory about the Master Sword
Now this is partially me coping about the Master Sword being so easily wrecked by a Triforce-less Ganondorf, but hear me out.
The Master Sword, during the time of BotW/TotK, has a number of faults not present in earlier entries of the series. During a fight with Guardians, the sword is damaged so seriously that it has to rest for a whopping one hundred years to recuperate. Not only that, but a further set of trials are required to increase the power of the blade. It is unable to seal Calamity Ganon, requiring Zelda's sage abilities -- something usually only required when Ganon holds a piece of the Triforce. And most notably, in the opening scene of TotK, mere gloom blasts are enough to
completely shatter the legendary sword, rendering it useless until it was given an eons-long nap in the Light Dragon's head.
There's also the matter of the Master Sword needing to recharge within the gameplay of BotW/TotK.
However, do you recall a certain memory in BotW? The one where there are 4-6 deceased Silver Lynels amongst a horde of other slain monsters, all killed by Link with minimal injury? The only weapon Link is shown to have in memories is the Master Sword (although there might be one where he uses a generic metal sword prior to getting the Blade of Evil's Bane), and there's never any mention of it needing to recharge. I think it's a safe conclusion to draw that the Master Sword running out of energy is more or less a gameplay mechanic.
So where does this leave us? Generally speaking, even assuming the recharge thing is a gameplay mechanic, the showings of the Master Sword in the last two games of the series have been a bit weaker than in previous games in the franchise, with the sword being damaged and even straight up broken with relative ease. This is presumably the same blade that caught thunderbolts from Demise, slew an immortal King of Evil holding the Triforce of Power, and depending on the timeline, killed Ganon countless times. Yet a skeletal Ganondorf, not even in his Demon King form, not even holding a Triforce piece, is able to obliterate it with two gloom blasts. That doesn't particularly make sense.
Here's what I propose. The key to the Master Sword's strength in previous games is its most iconic resting place, a location of sacred power so strong that it's directly connected to the Sacred Realm -- the Temple of Time. Let us walk through the Master Sword's various appearances, chronologically.
The Blade of Evil's Bane as depicted in Skyward Sword is arguably the most powerful one. Starting as the Goddess Sword, you gradually power it up throughout the course of the story, from the Goddess Longsword, to the Goddess White Sword, to the Master Sword, and eventually the True Master Sword. This is accomplished through a series of Sacred Flames, described as "the breath of life itself", personally created by the Golden Goddesses. The final touch to the legendary blade is a blessing from Zelda, who in Skyward Sword is the
closest thing to Hylia herself. There's a common misconception that every Zelda is Hylia Reborn. This is false. They carry the
Blood of the Goddess, but only Skyward Sword Zelda is a direct reincarnation of Hylia. She even has Hylia's memories. Skyward Sword's Master Sword is freshly created, bathed in 3 flames made directly by the Golden Goddesses and blessed by the equivalent of Hylia herself. It is used to permanently seal Demise, a demon of such power that the main villain of the series, Ganondorf, is a mere reflection of his hatred. Also, it can catch thunderbolts, which is fucking awesome. After this, the blade is put to rest in the Temple of Time, where it remains for millennia.
Ocarina of Time is the Master Sword's next (and undoubtedly most iconic) appearance, where it, as it was placed in Skyward Sword, is held in the Temple of Time. It serves as a key
directly to the Sacred Realm, a place of such holy magic that the Triforce itself is contained there. Such is the Master Sword's power that, after sealing Link for an entire seven years, it's able to seal the King of Evil and his Triforce of Power with the help of the Seven Sages, besting him in single combat not once, but twice. This is the same Ganondorf who collapsed an entire castle while exhausted.
There are a lot more appearances after this, so I'll be brief.
- Twilight Princess: The sword has no notable weaknesses. It's left in the Temple of Time once more, which still seems to possess some degree of sacred power as well as the ability to travel in time.
- Wind Waker: The sword has been weakened to the point where the blessings of two sages are required in order to keep its sacred power intact. The Temple of Time is presumably gone and it is now stored in Hyrule Castle. Has also been using its power to seal Ganon's magic for a long time.
Now here's where things get interesting. In both A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds, the sword has one key quality; it's stored not in the Temple of Time, but rather a pedestal in the Lost Woods. The Pendants of Virtue are required to lift it in both games to prove Link's worth as the hero, allowing him to pluck the Legendary Master Sword. ALTTP is also one of the only games where the Master Sword can
not slay Ganon; the Silver Arrows are required for the job. What could this possibly mean? As most of you know, ALTTP and ALBW are the only games where you can tangibly upgrade the Master Sword in such a way that even its appearance is changed. The methods of upgrading it are a bit mundane, too -- a few Dwarven swordsmiths can as much as quadruple the strength of the Blade of Evil's Bane? A sword so old it has existed nearly as long as time itself? It's a little less silly in ALBW given you need a special ore, but the point remains.
Is the Master Sword from ALTTP/ALBW stronger than the sword immediately after being bathed in three flames from Din, Farore, and Nayru, before being blessed by the literal light of a Goddess? I mean, possibly, this series has had sillier plot points, but I don't think that's the case.
I think the Master Sword has lost some degree of power by the time of ALTTP/ALBW, and the upgrades we see in those games don't make it four times stronger than SS/OoT's Master Sword, but rather restore some of its previous power. They aren't permanent, either. They're superficial upgrades, healed away when the Master Sword is put back into its pedestal. The Master Sword has lost so much power that it's malleable by the hammer of a swordsmith or magic from a mere Great Fairy.
So how does this translate into BotW/TotK? If you'll remember, a major plot point is that the Master Sword is able to gain power when
bathed in sacred light. The Deku Tree says as much to Zelda. A steady stream of sacred light is what's able to restore the Master Sword's luster, bring it back to its status as the legendary sword it's supposed to be. I believe that the reason for the Master Sword's apparent decrease in power throughout the Downfall Timeline as well as the need for the constant blessing of Sages in the Adult Timeline is one thing; the lack of the Temple of Time. To put it bluntly, there is no resting place even remotely as sacred as that of the Temple of Time. Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess, games where the Master Sword has no known faults and never has to be upgraded or repaired, are ones where it has been in the Temple of Time for millennia. The Temple's pedestal is connected directly to the Sacred Realm, as well as possessing the ability for extremely potent time travel.
This isn't to say that the pedestal found within the woods doesn't have magic properties, but I wouldn't call it exactly "sacred". In Creating a Champion, the following is stated:
"The Master Sword has averted many calamities alongside the hero, and the pedestal that restores the sword from the damage it incurs in those battles is located in Korok Forest, which brims with the energy of the land."
There's specific wording here. The Master Sword, rather than drawing upon sacred power (like that found in the Temple of Time or the energy from the Light Dragon), draws upon the energy of the land in order to heal. Certainly potent, but it's not sacred power. Not only would this explain the sword being weaker in BotW/TotK (and possibly even in ALTTP/ALBW), it would also explain the need for two sages to pray to it in Wind Waker. Not only is it in neither a sacred location nor one full of life, the Master Sword is in a world where the vast majority of life in Hyrule was snuffed out by both Ganon and a terrible flood. There is far less energy "of the land" to gather -- which is especially problematic given that the Master Sword is also sealing Ganondorf's minions and his magic.
TL;DR: The Master Sword loses power when not in a sacred pedestal like the one found in the Temple of Time. In the pedestals of the forest (ALttP/ALBW/BotW/TotK), it draws upon the "power of the land" to heal itself, resulting in an overall weakened blade. The upgrades in ALTTP/ALBW do not make the sword four times stronger than SS/OoT/TP's Master Sword, but are superficial power increases as a result of the sword losing so much power that it has become malleable enough to have its appearance changed by mere swordsmiths and Great Fairies. It requires the prayers of Sages in Wind Waker because it both lacks a sacred pedestal and there is little life of the land to draw energy from. And finally, it is able to be shattered in TotK due to thousands upon thousands of years without being bathed in sacred energy.

2023.05.29 21:25 Mr_Bell_Man Respect Payback (Amazon's The Boys)
Before The Seven hit the scene as the most popular superhero group in the world, there was Payback. The group consisted of Soldier Boy, Crimson Countess, Gunpowder, Black Noir, Mindstorm, Swatto, and the TNT Twins.
Due to Soldier Boy’s constant abuse, several Payback members collaborated with Stan Edgar to have Soldier Boy handed over to the Russians in 1984. They then went their separate ways and lived their own lives, that is until Soldier Boy’s return in 2021 resulted in him hunting the rest of Payback down.
Legend - [AT] = Amazon Trivia. While watching The Boys on Amazon Prime, you can pause the episode to see official trivia bits provided by the show itself. A few of these contain relevant lore for this RT.
- [BN Flashback] = Black Noir flashback. S3E7 showcases some of Payback’s past in the form of Black Noir’s… unique flashbacks. For very obvious reasons these flashbacks aren’t 1:1 accurate but we can at least use them to say who fought who, which character won a fight, etc.
Soldier Boy was the leader of Payback and considered to be the greatest supe of them all before Homelander’s debut. Granted with super strength and durability, Soldier Boy would regularly misuse his powers both on civilians and his own teammates. His abuse led to the rest of Payback collaborating with Russia to have Soldier Boy taken into their custody. In Russia, Soldier Boy was experimented on for decades until he was accidentally released by The Boys. Now equipped with a new radiation beam power, Soldier Boy hunts down the rest of his former team members.

Highlighted Feats
A man with little words, Black Noir is an assassin who suffers from mental trauma due to the beating he got from Soldier Boy during the Nicaragua mission. He would later become one of the founding members of The Seven before being killed by Homelander.

Highlighted Feats
Crimson Countess was one of the leading figures of Payback as well as Soldier Boy’s supposed lover. In reality however, she hated him more than anything due to his abuse of the group. After Payback dissolved, she found a career in singing which ironically enough included being forced to sing memorial songs in honor of Soldier Boy’s presumed death.
Also she cares deeply about chimps.
Physicals
Fireballs
Crimson Countess’ main ability is producing fireballs by putting both of her hands together.
Gunpowder is a major gun fanatic who is extremely skilled when it comes to getting a good shot.
Physicals
Marksmanship
Mindstorm has various mind-related powers such as mind reading and hypnosis. He also has bipolar disorder which has led to him being forced to hear people’s thoughts around him to the point where he became a recluse in a forest.
Physicals
Mind abilities
Mindstorm possesses several abilities that involve manipulating people’s minds.
Mind reading
Mindstorm can read people’s minds. In the past he could do this whenever he wanted, however the bipolar disorder he developed resulted in him being forced to read nearby minds against his will.

2023.05.29 20:19 ThrowAway7s2 "Grace's recollections of the melodious month of May" from the May 15, 1979 Door County Advocate
| Grace's recollections of the melodious month of May Grace Samuelson By Grace Samuelson May is really a melodious month. Makes you feel like singing. The snow (except for occasional flurries) is gone; tulips and daffodils come out of hiding, buds on the trees are opening. Birds sing as they build nests. The winds have a melody, too, from roaring tempo sounds to whispering zephers. Spring rains tap out patty-cake lullabies on the roof, or swish and swing with disco beat. Even the dreary, stay-inside days, when we sort over things for the annual "Clean-up" time finds us warbling old time melodies. The big thing for many of us, while we were growing up in the early 1900's was the May Day surprise. We made little construction paper baskets, at school or at home, and the last day of April we went gathering wild flowers (if we could find any that early). Then early May Day morning we filled the baskets. If no wild flowers were to be found, we made crepe paper roses. We hung the baskets over the door knob of our best friend's house. Some of the schools had May-pole dances, and one memorable year I had the thrill of going down to Lawrence college with Mr. and Mrs. George Washburn for their May Day festivities. Vera was attending Lawrence then and I remember when she introduced me to her friends, they seemed surprised that my hair was blond and her's so dark. She said; "There are four of us girls, and we each have hair a different color: mine dark brown, Verna's light brown, Grace's blond, and Marian's red." I was a high school sophomore then, and felt very grown-up, especially as the Washburns stopped at a restaurant on the way home. We seldom had a chance to eat out. Now May 1 is known as Law Day; also the day the Russians and other militaristic nations demonstrate their show of force and power. (I wonder what Brezhnev would do with a May basket, or watch a May-pole dance?) Back then we made plans for observing Mother's Day. I was 10 when President Wilson signed a resolution establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis was the originator of the idea, and she worked hard to obtain that resolution. In later years she became a bitter woman, because she said that it was turned into a day for profit for merchants instead of merely honoring mothers. The first Mother's Day I remember was simply observed by wearing a pink carnation to church if your mother was living, or a white one if she wasn't. Then, greeting cards, gifts of candy and flowers were suggested. Later, commercialism took hold and advertisements for "gifts for Mother" ranged from perfume and candy to luxury items. Those early Mother's Days, I recall, we embroidered monograms on hankies, and proudly brought home the white carnation Mama would wear next day to church. The minister always preached a sermon about motherhood. We had a record for the Victrola (by Galli Curci, I believe) "Songs My Mother Taught Me," and someone always sang "Mother Machree." When people began having radios in their homes lovely and sentimental programs filled the airwaves. And, from the little pansy plants in paper cups that the children in Sunday school classes brought home to Mom, to elaborate presents and taking mother out to eat on "her" day, Mother was really special. Every greeting card is cherished, especially the hand colored ones made in school or at home. The legacy my own Mother left that I treasure most was the little slips of paper I found in her Bible: memorandums, quotes of poetry, parts of letters from her daughters expressing love, favorite bible verses, a lock of each daughter's hair. Every one expressed to me the real "Tollie": my mother. Mother and daughter banquets through the years bring memories, too, and I recall the year Mother, dressed as a pioneer mother, related details of her own pioneer upbringing, and read her tribute to her mother. Housecleaning was usually all done by that time of the year; the house was soap, water, and ammonia-clean. We were through with beating the rugs with the heavy wire carpet beater, lugging the aired clothes back upstairs to hang in the well-scrubbed closets. Now we were set to raking the lawn, sprouting the old potatoes in the cellar; carrying up the stored vegetables too-far gone to be used. A farmer came to plow all the gardens in our neighborhood, and we raked and smoothed, and helped plant leaf lettuce, radishes, and Papa's favorite, pepper cress. When we had the chance we'd hike out to the big creek and watch boys spearing suckers. The nicest part about living in town was that we were so close to the country. We kept a lookout for the meadowlarks, bluebirds, bob-o-links, thrush, and orioles. The 17th of May meant Norwegian Independence Day to many of our neighbors; to us it was Marian's birthday, and we always felt that "good luck" played a part in that. We three small girls were out in the yard with Mama when I found a four-leaf-clover. Mama told me to make a wish, and put the leaf in the bible. I wished for a baby, and, sure enough, one morning when we got up we were told that Dr. Kreutzer had brought us a baby sister in his little black bag! We were so excited, and I remember that Mama got out of bed one evening shortly after that to see Haley's comet from the west bedroom window. I was six, and I remember seeing that; its long tail streaming across the western sky. The big question at this time of every year was whether we'd have frost when the cherry blossoms were open. The year Marian was born, I remember hearing the Stanton Minors and Alex Johnsons talking about the early bloom. Most years we could expect blossoms around Memorial Day. Whether the blossoms came early or late, they were always breath-taking. We had small orchards all around our Poplar st. home at that time, but always everyone made an attempt to ride out in the country to see the lovely expanse of miles of white blossoms, and just a little later, the beautiful pink and white of the apple blossoms. You could live all your life in Door County and never lose the thrill of that glorious promise. Memorial Day was approaching, and in all the years I was in grade school I can remember getting ready for that big day. We called it Decoration Day, and assembled at the school, our bouquets of violets, spring beauties, mayflowers and trilliums, (with some lilac branches if they were open) wrapped in damp newspaper to keep them from wilting. We marched in a body down to Bayside cemetery, where we set flags on the old soldiers' graves, and decorated them with the flowers we'd gone picking after school the day before. There was always a program, with Spanish American war veterans, and a few Civil War veterans who were left. They always rode in one of the automobiles. We thought we had an individual part of the program, as we claimed "Grandpa" Grandy, who lived across the street from us, with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wil Maples. We loved to sit on their porch steps and hear him relate stories of his part in that war. He was a Cavalryman; once his horse was shot right from under him in battle. There were always speeches: Judge Graass, Lifwyer Wagner, and other good orators. And Memorial Day always meant the first picnic day of the year, with the potato salad, boiled ham sandwiches, Mama's burnt leather cake, and, of course, homemade ice cream. It was the time of year for dandelion greens, wilted with a hot vinegar and bacon dressing, or just doused with cider vinegar from Papa's cut-glass vinegar cruet that was always on the table, near his place. Some years there were early radishes and onions, and we snitched the tender stems of the rhubarb plants even before Mama could get enough to make one of her luscious pies. We hunted asparagus spears (sparrow-grass, some called it) growing wild in the fields, spring onions and baby radishes from the garden, and looked forward to the 4th, when strawberries would be ripe. The mason jars on the fruit cellar shelves were thinning out now, though there was still some sauce, and pickles left. Now that housecleaning days with its rush and labor were over, there wasn't the need for one-dish meals, except on wash-days, or ironing days. Before we got electricity in the house, we used sad-irons for Tuesday's ironing. Once, when I wanted to iron my favorite doll's dress, I put my doll's sad-iron right on the coals to heat. First thing I knew, it was red hot, and Mama told me I'd ruined the iron — the temper. I realized that I had to watch my own temper, but I had no idea that an iron had one! There is something about visiting cemeteries at this time of year that harks back to old customs; families fixing up the graves of loved ones; planting flowers and carrying water for them to grow. There are many beautiful little cemeteries (64 in all, I believe) in the county. Now, most of them have perpetual care, but there are still neglected plots with sunken graves, and mossy headstones. What used to be the Samuelson family cemetery, later turned over to the township, is still a lovely restful place to me. When we were in the restaurant, I used to walk over there almost every morning; there was a tranquility there. We always put a new flag on the grave of Job Sweet, the Civil War soldier buried there decades ago. I asked Mrs. Ida Johnson if they did anything special in Sweden, where she grew up, to observe Memorial Day. She said the last Sunday in May was always the day all the families put flowers on the graves — beautiful white blossoms which grew all around, although they also had mayflowers, and spring beauties, and violets. Sweden was a peaceful country, so there was no need of commemorence of soldier dead. But, she said, in November of every year, the families put candles in metal lanterns on every grave, a symbol of the Light everlasting. Nowadays, when Memorial Day has been moved to Monday, to extend a weekend , we no longer observe the day as we used to. On the real date — the 30th — the Veterans will gather in uniform; sound taps, and hear a few words of tribute. And Memorial Day, and May, will have rendered the spring overture. We remember. https://archive.co.door.wi.us/jsp/RcWebImageViewer.jsp?doc_id=1e8fc801-90a4-4104-8e86-19a1ea0947dc/wsbd0000/20170120/00000934&pg_seq=18 Courtesy of the Door County Library Newspaper Archive submitted by ThrowAway7s2 to DoorCountyALT [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 19:41 RaynaClay The Last Resort: A Small Leak
Hello all. I have written here before about my job at Ultima Resort (
1,

4,
5,
6,
7), though I know it has been a while, sorry about that. We were trapped for some time, my phone died pretty quickly, and I wasn’t able to recharge it again until the water receded. So, I haven’t really been able to write. But I am getting ahead of myself. Let me get you up to date, then it will all make more sense.
I opened a door and peered into the closet, but the noise was quieter here, if anything. I shut the closet and continued down the hallway. The dripping had started out intermittent. The gentle plip, plip, plip was barely audible over the normal sounds of the hotel, and we had assumed it was related to the steady rain that had been drumming on the building for a few days, at that point. But the frequency of the dripping had been increasing steadily, and now was concerningly loud and constant. It was somehow audible from every corner of the hotel, and it was only a matter of time until the guests complained. They were already irritable because of the bad weather, which had kept them stuck indoors. As I passed a window, a flash of lightning lit the forest behind the hotel. The lights flickered ominously but it stayed on. The clap of thunder rattled the doors in their frames. I spotted Vincent hurrying towards me from down the hall. His face seemed pale.
“Well, did you find the leak?” I asked.
“Umm… you could say that,” he replied, uncomfortably, eyes shifting to the storm outside.
“What’s wrong?”
“It… well, you should just come see.”
I followed him down the hall to the ballroom where we had hosted the anniversary party some days back. It had been a nice event. Less deaths than I had expected. The hors d’oeuvres were pretty good. There was still a bit of smoke damage on the west wall, but we had cleaned it off as best as we could and the place looked presentable again, though I was now thinking we should put on a new coat of paint. It was hard to decide, when I wasn’t sure if the room would even be here next week. Vincent opened the door on the back wall and gestured me inside. This was new.
It was some sort of small storage cupboard, with dim lighting and a low ceiling. It was full of what looked like furniture, draped in white cloths for storage. I wondered what the furniture was made of, because the room had a strange fetid odor, that reminded me of rot and death. I covered my nose with my hand instinctively, but it did little to help. The small window in the back showed that the rain continued to fall outside, but it didn’t seem to be the source of the leak, as the floor around it was dry. Still, the leak must be in here, because the sound was louder than ever. I took a step forward, to get a better look at the room, but Vincent grabbed my arm and pulled me back, pointing towards the ceiling. I looked up to see a large dome light. It had a strange dark tint, and hardly any light made it through. But something else was coming from the dome. Drips fell in a steady rhythm, and as my eyes tracked them, I saw them splash into a widening puddle on the ground. The puddle was viscous and black, glimmering in the dim light. I looked back at Vincent.
“What is that?” I raised an eyebrow. “It doesn’t really look like ordinary water to me.”
“I don’t know. Maybe… it is picking something up as it drips through from the roof?” he did not sound particularly convincing.
“Maybe,” I tried to play along. “Though, I am not sure I want to know what that could be. Did you check if it is coming from somewhere upstairs?”
“Yeah. Nothing out of the ordinary on the floor above, and I can’t find any signs of a leak anywhere else.”
“Alright,” I backed out of the door and closed it behind us. “Well, I am sure whatever that is will work itself out.”
“What? We’re just going to leave it? Why did we even bother looking, then?” Vincent protested.
“I was worried it was a roof leak, something we needed to handle with routine maintenance. That does not seem to be the case,” I raised a questioning eyebrow. “Do you know how to fix whatever is going on in there?”
“No…”
“Me neither. In this place, when the ceiling is dripping black ichor, it is probably for a reason. I assume we’ll find out when one of our guests gets involved.”
Vincent opened his mouth, as if to protest, but even as he did, the sound of the phone at the desk echoed through the hotel. Vincent sighed,
“Alright, let’s go see what fresh hell awaits us today.”
I heard a small chuckle inside my head. I resisted the urge to ask Al what he knew. He answers were rarely helpful. He didn’t seem to lie, but he was often intentionally misleading, saying whatever he thought would elicit the most drama. I was tired of giving him the satisfaction. I was sure I could sense his disappointment when I refused to engage, but maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part. I couldn’t blame Vincent for being apprehensive about what the guests’ inquiry might be. The three men had arrived to participate in some sort of golf event, but they been here for 3 days now and since it had poured every moment, the event was not taking place. The guests were very unhappy about this turn of events, and they had mostly been killing time by taking it out on us. That wasn’t exactly a surprise. The rich ones were always the most demanding, unused to being told ‘no’ even when the question was ‘has the rain stopped yet?’, and based on the Bugatti they had arrived in, these men were quite rich. I answered the phone on the desk, already suppressing a sigh.
“Ultima Resort, front desk, how can I help you?”
“You can come and open the bar,” the voice on the other end snapped. “It’s past noon and the sign says it should be available by now.”
“I apologize, sir. I’ll be right there.”
“You had better be. The service at this place is frankly astounding. Honestly, I don’t understand why anyone ever stays here. I have half a mind to leave a review warning people away.”
“I’m sorry, sir. I know your stay hasn’t been ideal, but please bear with us and we will do everything we can to make it right.”
“You can start by hanging up the phone and getting me my drink.”
The line went dead in my hand. I sighed and replaced the phone on the cradle.
“Let me guess, they wanted to give us a large tip and leave early?”
“Don’t quit your day job,” I chuckled. “You wouldn’t make it as a psychic. Come on, let’s go open the bar, before we have a mutiny on our hands.”
I grabbed the key to open the shutters from the desk and we headed into the dining room. Our three guests were standing around the locked bar, making a show of checking their watches. I struggled to keep my eyes from rolling. It was 12:03pm.
“You know,” Jack turned to the man next to him, but spoke loudly enough to be sure I could hear. “This reminds me of some of the dumps we stayed in before we made our fortune, you know? The little rat trap motels in the port towns we had to stay in.”
“The customer service certainly leaves something to be desired, for a 5-star resort,” his companion, Stewart, sniffed. “For the amount we are paying, I would expect better.”
I turned the lock, opening the bar. I let them vent; I didn’t particularly care if they left us a bad review, and I certainly couldn’t do anything with a good tip, so they were free to hate it here if they wanted. It mattered less to me than they could possibly imagine.
“Can you both hear that leak from your rooms?” the final man, Lesley, asked.
“Can we? I swear it is audible from everywhere in the hotel. There must be a dozen leaks in this old roof,” Jack laughed.
“It would explain that,” Stewart gestured to wet stain on the carpet across the room, oozing out from under a door I didn’t remember being there yesterday.
I glanced over to Vincent, he shrugged,
“I guess we’ve got a new connection to the ballroom. That’s kind of handy,” he said quietly to me, stepping behind the bar and reaching for the rum to pour; it was all they ever ordered.
“That’s another thing that reminds me of the old days,” Jack elbowed Lesley. “You would think a landlocked hotel would be drier than a yacht, but here we are. Maybe you should get out a mop, see if you remember how, Les.”
Lesley stiffened,
“I don’t do menial labor anymore, Cap.”
“Of course, of course,” Jack clapped Les on the shoulder. “Just a joke, mate. The usual, my good man,” he smiled at Vincent, who began pouring drinks.
As day transitioned into evening, I left the dining room in search of absorbent material, to put down on the leak that was spreading persistently into the dining room. I found some cat litter in a back closet, and it seemed like it would do, for now, so I returned and began spreading it over the growing stain. Jack at the bar looked up blearily, watching my work, before finally declaring,
“Oh, so it’s shit, then. That would at least explain the smell.”
“I think it smells more like a rotting carcass,” Stewart interjected.
He had a point there. Maybe I should get some baking soda from the kitchen.
“You know what?” Jack concluded. “Let’s get this next bottle to go. We’ll take it to our rooms for the night. I can’t stand the smell down here another minute.”
He grabbed the bottle from the bar, then he rose and led his friends out of the dining room. I couldn’t say I was sorry to see them go. Vincent circled out from around the bar and approached the soggy patch on the floor.
“So, is that the storage room?”
Now that we were alone, I risked turning the knob and I opened the door to see the same storage room we had entered earlier, though now the light fixture was pouring dark liquid onto the floor, the drip having turned into a deluge. I slammed the door again.
“Maybe we should get Manny,” I concluded.
Manny stood back, watching the ichor pour down like a waterfall. It was pooling around our shoes now, even standing outside the doorframe. He stroked his chin,
“How long has it been like this?”
“I don’t know,” I frowned. “It’s certainly sped up since we found it several hours ago. Any idea how we stop it?”
Manny closed his eyes for a moment, then frowned.
“I think, perhaps, that we should move the food and water from the kitchen, so they don’t get spoiled.”
“Move them where?” Vincent asked.
“To the top floor storage closet. It’ll be safest there. Come help me gather things up.”
“What, exactly, do you think is going to happen?” I raised an eyebrow.
“Let’s just get to work, we probably don’t have much time.”
Manny turned and strode into the kitchen. Vincent hung back and tapped my shoulder,
“What does he know that we don’t?”
“I have no idea, honestly,” I shrugged, and Vincent headed off towards the kitchen. “Do you know?”
I kept my voice low, so the others didn’t hear.
Oh, are you speaking to me now? Al sniffed.
“Depends, are you going to say anything useful?”
Perhaps for a…
“If you say ‘for a price’ we can go back to not talking. I am not trading anything for this.”
I think you will find I am much more helpful if you are willing to make a trade.
“I categorically disagree with that statement.”
Fine, I could feel him scowling. I can give you a hint for free. Maybe try asking yourself what he’s hiding from you?
“Your free hint is that he is keeping secrets?” I raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t that true of all of us? That isn’t exactly helpful.”
Well then, perhaps you would like to make a trade?
“Why do I even bother?” I sighed and headed into the kitchen to join the others.
Vincent was helping Manny load food onto a rolling cart. The Chef was, fortunately, nowhere in sight.
“Grab another cart and start loading the soft drinks and bottled water onto it. We don’t have much time before we need to be in our rooms,” Manny instructed.
I heaved a case of bottled water onto the cart, and we all got to work. By the time we made the final trip the carpet in the hall squished under my feet, oozing dark, foul-smelling liquid. It was coming in fast, now. Manny was probably right; we wouldn’t want the food supplies getting contaminated with… whatever this was. After he finished stacking the last bag of rice in the closet, Manny closed the door and turned the key in the lock.
“Well, we should find our rooms. It is getting late, and I doubt they will be in their usual place.”
As he turned to walk away, I noticed blood dripping down from his fingers onto the carpet.
“Manny, wait, your arm,” I pulled up his sleeve to reveal a thin, but deep cut running up his forearm. “What happened? Are you alright?”
Manny yanked his arm away,
“It’s nothing. I must have scraped it moving a box.”
It didn’t look like a scrape. It looked clean, with sharp edges, like a knife wound. But before I could say anything more, he was gone, disappearing down one of the halls.
“You ever wonder about him?” Vincent asked.
“Wonder what?”
“What his deal is. Come on, don’t play dumb. You’ve noticed how strange he can be. How he seems to know things about this place he shouldn’t. Surely, you’ve considered that he might be… one of them.”
“One of them?”
“You know, one of the things that run this place, like the Chef. A demon.”
“Manny? No, that’s ridiculous.”
“Why? He was here before you, maybe he was always here.”
“He is nothing like the Chef or the Masseur. It’s obvious that he is a person.”
“Is it? Maybe that’s just another trick. Maybe he is here to torment us, to steer us wrong.”
I shook my head,
“No, he’s helped us, helped me, many times. It’s impossible.”
“Alright,” Vincent shrugged. “But I have a bad feeling about this one, Lucy. Something about that… water. It isn’t right.”
“You always have a bad feeling. Come on, it’s time to get to sleep.”
“Right. See you tomorrow.”
However he knew, Manny was right. I found my room on the 2nd floor, in a back hallway. Since it wasn’t in its usual place, it took longer to find, but I did manage it before the deadline and locked myself in. Somehow, I could still hear the sound of flowing water, though. I could hear it everywhere in the hotel, in fact. In a way, it was soothing, people liked the sound of flowing water, right? So, keeping that in mind, I allowed it to lull me to sleep.
The morning arrived without fanfare, or a discernable difference in the light coming in through the windows. The storm continued to rage outside, and the clouds were so thick and dark that it was impossible to tell that dawn had broken. Still, my watch told me that day had arrived and so I left the room prepared to mop up whatever water had pooled downstairs and try to serve breakfast. No food had appeared in my room last night, so breakfast sounded very appealing. At least I could sneak a muffin or something. As I arrived at the stairs, I saw Manny standing on the landing, gazing down at the lobby.
“Is the mess bad?” I asked.
“You could say that,” Manny didn’t turn as I approached.
I reached the railing and gasped. The lobby was gone. The whole first floor was gone. All I could see was dark water, lapping against the stairs.
“How is that possible?”
“That’s not really a relevant question, in this place,” Manny noted. “Let’s just call it a flash flood.”
I jogged over to look out one of the windows, lightning flashed, illuminating an alien view, the lawn and garden were also gone. The only thing in sight was a sea of dark water, with the occasional tree protruding from the surface.
“What do we do now?” I asked.
“What we always do. Vincent has headed upstairs to lay out some food. We can help him, then lock up the rest and go clean rooms.”
“And if the water keeps rising?”
“We keep moving up the floors, I suppose.”
I stepped down the stairs until I was next to the water, and reached out a hand to touch the surface, wanting to test its temperature and texture.
Stop!
I froze in place, hand hovering above the liquid, the command so urgent I couldn’t ignore it. Trying to act casually, I rose and headed back up the stairs,
“Alright, I’ll go help with breakfast. Maybe we should put up a sign directing the guests to the 5th floor?”
“I’ll handle that. We will have to ration the food carefully; we don’t know how long we will need to make it last. Whatever you do, don’t show the guests where the food is locked up, and only bring out enough for us to have a small meal.”
“Right,” I nodded. “See you up there.”
I turned and headed up the stairs. I waited until I was out of earshot to ask,
“Ok, what was that about?”
Do not touch the water.
“Yes, I gathered that. Why?”
Because you belong to me. And I need you alive.
“What is the deal with that water, exactly?”
But only silence answered. He was done volunteering things for the moment, apparently. I sighed and continued up the stairs. Vincent was waiting for me on the fifth floor, hovering by the landing, looking down over the dark, gleaming surface of the new lake below.
“Have you ever seen anything like this before?” he asked as I reached the top of the stairs.
“Nope, this is a new one.”
“I wonder if this is what being on the Titanic felt like?” he mused. “Water rising, nowhere to go, just waiting for the end.”
“We aren’t on a ship, though.”
“No. Does that make it better, or worse?”
I shrugged and Vincent passed me a bagel,
“I figure we should eat the breads first; they’ll go moldy in this humidity. We can save the rice, potatoes, and canned goods for later.”
“Makes sense. Do we have a way to cook any of those things?”
“I looked around. Some of the rooms have fireplaces, I guess we can hang a pot over the fire, cook that way. But maybe all this will stop before we get to that point.”
“Maybe,” I wasn’t exactly feeling optimistic about it.
I helped Vincent lay out some fruit and soft breads on the hall table, so that when the guests awoke, they would have something to eat.
“What exactly are we going to tell them when they get here?” Vincent asked, putting out some bowls. “We can’t exactly say that the hotel is sinking and it’s all perfectly normal, can we?”
“What else is there to say?” I shrugged. “It’s some sort of flood. We don’t know any more than they do. It’s the truth, right?”
He considered that for a moment, then nodded.
“I suppose it is.”
A sudden commotion from downstairs drew us to the railing. The three guests were standing on the 2nd floor landing, looking down at the water, Manny was saying something I couldn’t quite hear, but the response was clear enough,
“What do you mean, underwater!” Steward shouted. “This hotel is on dry land. We specifically avoided anything near the ocean or any major body of water. Where did all this even come from?”
“We are located on a flood plain. It is possible that the dam broke upstream,” Manny explained calmly.
Dam, huh? That wasn’t a bad explanation.
“If that is true, where are the authorities, shouldn’t someone be here to evacuate us?”
“I am sure they will be here when they can. Until then, we just need to stay calm and safe. There is breakfast laid out on the 5th floor, please stay away from the water and we will relocate your rooms to the upper floors.”
The trio of men grumbled, but eventually they headed up the stairs. Vincent and I ducked back to our places. As they grabbed fruit from the table, Lesley scowled,
“I told you we should have left days ago. We could have moved to another hotel. Now we’re trapped here, in this dump.”
“Oh, relax, Les,” Jack chuckled. “We’ve been in worse scrapes before. This isn’t a big deal.”
“And if the water keeps rising?”
“I bet we could manage to make a passable raft, eh Stewart?”
Both men chuckled, sharing a private joke, but Lesley still looked anxious.
“I didn’t ever want to be out on the water again. We agreed.”
“Seriously, Les, just keep it together, alright? Let’s just eat something and find some way to kill time. I am sure the authorities will send a rescue crew and we’ll be out of here in no time.”
I opened the storage closet and felt my heart sink as I looked on the nearly empty room. We were down to only a couple of boxes of crackers and a few bottles of water. We had rationed the food carefully, but it had been over 2 weeks now, and we had almost exhausted our supply. I wasn’t looking forward to telling the others. Things had been getting tense. The power went out on the third day, and by now every cellphone we had was dead. Not that anyone could get a signal before that, anyway. The water had risen all the way to the fifth floor, so we were all trapped together on the top floor of the hotel, with nowhere else to go, if it rose any further. The guests had mostly given up hope for rescue, and the rest of us knew that was never a hope to begin with. So, now it looked like the six of us were just going to be trapped up here to starve, if we didn’t drown first. I covered my face with my hands.
“That bad, huh?”
“Vincent. No, it’s… it’s not…” what was the point in lying about it? “Yeah, it’s that bad. We are almost out of food, and the water has risen at least another foot since yesterday.”
“What are we going to do?”
“I have no idea. Let’s just get back to the group. We shouldn’t leave Manny alone, in case the guests come out of their rooms.”
“Right.”
We walked back to the central hallway together. As we entered the room, I saw Manny with his back to us, removing a soaked shirt. Even in the dim light, it was clear that his back was webbed with dozens of scars and cuts. Vincent cleared his throat and Manny hurriedly tugged on a dry shirt.
“I patched the hole in the roof,” he explained. “The rain should stop getting in from there, at least. And I brought down a full barrel of rainwater and replaced it with an empty one.”
“Thank you, Manny. At least the water from the sky is… normal. Because we are going to have to start drinking that water from time now on, I think.”
“And the food?” Manny asked.
“Some crackers, nothing more.”
“Well, I guess we will all need to tighten our belts, then.”
A moment of heavy silence passed between us, before a door burst open and Jack emerged.
“Where’s the food?” he barked. “We’re hungry and the table is bare.”
“Food’s gone,” Manny replied coolly. “There is water in the barrel, to take the edge off.”
“We can’t survive on only water.”
“We can, for another couple of weeks.”
“So that is your plan, to slowly starve to death?”
Manny shrugged but didn’t reply.
“Well, suit yourselves, I have a better plan.”
Jack turned on his heel and stormed out.
“What do you think they will do?” Vincent asked.
“He said already, didn’t he? Build a raft,” Manny replied.
“Maybe that isn’t a bad idea,” I offered. “We could help, try to get out of here?”
“Has attempting to leave ever worked?” Manny asked. “No, all we can do is hunker down until this resolves itself. And I don’t think going out on that water is a good idea.”
“Should we try to stop them, then?”
“No. If they are focused on building, it will keep them off our backs, for the time being. Let them do what they want.”
Vincent and I spent the next few days watching the three men lash together furniture using heavy objects as improvised hammers and strips of torn bed linens as ropes. They seemed to actually have some idea of what they were doing, and they quickly fell into a rhythm, with Stewart and Jack doing most of the planning and construction and Lesley being ordered to fetch supplies and carry heavy objects. He grumbled about it, but did what they told him. They mostly didn’t even notice we were there, as long as we made a show of occupying ourselves with some cleaning task or another. They never even bothered to ask why we were still cleaning and maintaining a flooded, sinking hotel all day. It was hard to tell if they just paid so little attention to us that they didn’t notice, or if they simply figured it was our way of coping with the situation. Occasionally, they would ask us for some material they needed but could not find, and we would help as much as we could, then they would go back to ignoring us. On the third day, when the raft was beginning to look seaworthy, Jack sat back on his heels, admiring their handiwork.
“Well, boys? What do you think? Will it float?”
Stewart rubbed his nose with his thumb,
“I think it’s as fine a vessel as we have ever crewed, captain.”
Jack laughed,
“And you thought we had left those days behind us for good, eh chief?”
“They are. But it looks like it will come in handy for us, one more time. Good luck, huh?”
“Good luck?” Lesley’s face turned dark; he had been increasingly dour over the last few days. “I don’t see the good luck in any of this. I think we are reaping our just reward.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Les, this flood has nothing to do with us.”
“No? You think all this is normal, then? It’s been raining nonstop for weeks, the water keeps rising, no one has come looking for us. It’s like…” he hesitated before continuing. “It’s like we are alone in our own private hell. Just us and dark water everywhere. I don’t know how you aren’t thinking about it. I can’t stop. I see his face whenever I close my eyes. I see the dark puddle in the bottom of the lifeboat. Maybe this is what we deserve.”
Jack backhanded him across the face,
“Pull yourself together, swabbie. And don’t speak again until you’ve regained your composure,” he turned back to Stewart. “Now, we need to get this to the roof before we finish lashing it together, or it won’t fit. Then, we can either find a way to launch it, or we can wait until the water rises enough, what do you think, Mr. Stewart?”
“Well, captain, I say we rig up some ropes to lower it, because if we wait until the water is that high and anything goes wrong, we won’t have another chance.”
“Very good. Alright, Les, help us lift these pieces.”
The raft was relocated to the roof and the next 3 days were spent lashing it together and making the ropes strong enough to lower it the ever-dwindling distance into the dark water. When they were finally ready to launch, Vincent, Manny and I gathered on the roof to watch. I had to admit, I was really beginning to hope they succeeded, even if it didn’t seem likely. We were still rationing out the last few crackers, but three or four crackers a day did little to even take the edge off of the hunger, which gnawed on my guts like an animal. If this didn’t work, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I looked over at Manny, his face grim and starting to look a little gaunt. As he turned to face me, I saw blood coating his neck and seeping into his shirt collar from a cut near his ear.
“You’re bleeding.”
He reached up and touched his neck, bringing his hand aways stained crimson,
“Shaving cut,” he offered, wiping it off absently with his hand.
I raised an eyebrow, but let it go. I had noticed Manny with little cuts or scars before, but he was always doing landscaping work or maintenance, so small cuts and injuries didn’t seem unusual. But suddenly, in such close quarters and confined indoors, it was apparent that he seemed to injure himself more than I would expect.
Curious, isn’t it? Al asked, speaking up for the first time in sometime.
“You have something to tell me?” I mumbled under my breath.
No, just noting that there is power in blood. I wonder what he uses it for?
Power, huh? That was probably worth thinking about. Later. For now, my attention was drawn to the makeshift ropes lowering the raft into the water. The raft settled into the water with barely a ripple, the liquid was entirely too thick and seemed to stick to the wood like oil, and the sound when it hit was less a splash and more of a splat. The three men looked at each other, confusion and concern on their faces.
“That doesn’t much seem like normal water, Cap’n,” Lesley noted.
“Probably lots of mud and silt mixed in, it’s nothing,” Jack waved away the concern. “Get down there and then you can help us down.”
Lesley shook his head, mutely.
“Fine, Stewart?”
The other man didn’t look happy about it, but he nodded apprehensively and moved to the edge of the roof and clambered down onto the raft. As it bucked and shifted under his weight, he lay down, waiting for it to stabilize, but instead, the rolling and pitching seemed to increase. Then, from the water under the boat came dozens of pale human hands. They were terribly bloated and marbled with green and grey. Corpse hands. Stewart looked down, terror written plainly on his face.
“No! It wasn’t my fault. I didn’t cause it,” he shouted at the corpses looming under him in the dark water. “You want the captain, not me!”
If that was meant to mollify them, it didn’t work. The hands gripped the wood and pulled, capsizing the raft and pitching Stewart into the water. He screamed as he hit the surface. Not just from fear, but pain. He tried clinging to flipped raft, but hands wrapped around his torso, trying to pull him into the dark. I could swear I heard whispers rising from the surface: Join us.
“Help me, please!” he cried.
He was too far down to reach from the roof, but maybe there was another way.
“Hurry, if we can get to the windows on the 5th floor, we can pull him in,” I shouted.
Vincent nodded and we ran down the stairs, searching for the room closest to him in the water. The screaming helped. When we dragged him inside, he was covered in scratches and bites from teeth that looked very human, some very deep and freely bleeding. His skin was stained from the dark water. The hands continued to reach for him, so I slammed the window shut, leaving them to paw at the glass, just as Manny burst into the room, followed by the other two guests. Seeing the seriousness of his injuries, Manny moved closer, kneeling next to me.
“Some of these are very deep. We need to get pressure on the wounds. Go grab some towels,” he instructed Stewart’s companions.
He inspected the bites and scratches more closely,
“Lucy, this bite is on an artery, press down on it hard, or he will bleed out. Vincent, go get some soap and water, we will have to clean this as best we can, under the circumstances.”
Vincent rose and Manny and I were left alone with Stewart, who seemed to have passed out.
“You seem to know what you are doing,” I noted, pressing down on the bleeding wound.
“I… I was a doctor, once,” he didn’t meet my eyes when he said it.
“Wow.”
“It was a long time ago. Another life.”
“Why didn’t you ever…” I was interrupted when Stewart’s eyes snapped open.
“I need a priest,” Stewart grabbed Manny’s collar, his eyes fevered and unfocused. “I need to confess my sins, before I die.”
“You aren’t going to…”
“We killed him,” he pressed on, oblivious to my objections. “Alan Ross.”
“The billionaire?” I blurted, surprised. “But he died in a… shipwreck…”
I fell silent. I remembered the news stories; Ross had been on a luxury yacht on the way to the Cayman Islands when it wrecked in a storm. The entire crew was lost, except for the captain, the chief mate, and a single deckhand, who had survived in a lifeboat. Ross was in the lifeboat as well, but he had already drowned, before they were able to drag him on board. They had drifted for over two weeks, with his corpse, before they were found and rescued. It had been a major news story, about a decade ago.
“It wasn’t like the news reported,” Stewart gasped. “When the yacht started taking on water, we should have stayed and helped to organize the evacuation of the crew. But Ross wanted to leave right away. He offered us money if we took just him and abandoned the others. We agreed, the captain and I. Lesley was just a deckhand, but he saw us leaving and followed. We quietly launched a lifeboat and fled, leaving the others to their fates.”
“How did Ross die?” I asked.
“He had a bag with him. It was so heavy he could hardly carry it. When he put it in the boat, it fell open and it was filled with diamonds. He was taking them to the Caymans. When we saw that, we… well, we decided. If he didn’t survive the shipwreck, if the diamonds were never found, who would know? We drowned him and hid the diamonds. When we were rescued, we waited awhile, then we sold them, made millions. But it wasn’t worth it… it wasn’t worth this. The guilt…”
He slumped to the ground. Manny met my eyes over the body,
“I think we lost him.”
As I looked up from the body, I saw Jack and Lesley standing there in the doorway, towels in their hands. There was an ugly look on Jack’s face.
“I wish he hadn’t told you that.”
“Told us what? He was raving, delusional,” I attempted.
“We were standing right here,” he replied.
I swallowed hard. Jack advanced into the room, holding a broken table leg like a club.
“We’ve kept this secret all these years, it isn’t getting out now.”
“We won’t tell anyone,” I protested.
“That isn’t a chance I am willing to take. Besides, with the food supply exhausted, it was always going to come to this, eventually. Might as well get it over with.”
“What are you doing?” I heard Vincent call from the doorway.
“Lesley, take care of him, will you?” Jack continued to advance on us.
“Please Jack, hasn’t there been enough death?” Lesley protested.
“Don’t act all innocent, you agreed to this, just like the rest of us. In for a penny, in for a pound, my friend.”
I glanced around for a weapon. Between the three of us, we should be able to take him, but I didn’t much like the look in Jack’s eyes. Manny had stood, backing slowly away as Jack advanced. Then the captain took a swing at him, Manny jumped to the side and the makeshift bat shattered the window behind him. Jack’s expression turned to one of horror as a pair of pale hands gripped the doorframe and a body began heaving itself through the open window. The broken glass sliced its bloated flesh to ribbons, but it didn’t halt the creature’s ingress. Dark, thick liquid that smelled of death oozed from its wounds.
“Alan!” Jack exclaimed, backing away swinging his bat at the creature.
“You owe me,” it gurgled.
We all backed out into the hall, but the creature advanced, slowly, leaving a trail of black liquid on the carpet as it walked.
“Is it money you want? I can get you your money back, your diamonds,” Jack offered.
“What use do I have for money?” it wheezed. “You owe me a life.”
Jack hit the body with his club, but it didn’t slow its progress. He screamed as it reached out a hand and closed it around his throat. Jack was lifted off his feet and the creature carried him to the stairs and plunged him into the dark water. At first, he flailed and fought, but a dozen hands rose from the water, gripping every part of his body. When he was completely immobilized, the corpse released him, letting him be dragged down into the depths. Then, it turned,
“Now,” it spoke to Lesley. “Will you fight, or come willingly?”
Lesley was trembling so hard he could barely stand,
“Please, I’m sorry, I beg you, spare me.”
The creature’s lips curled into a grotesque smile,
“Do you regret what you did to me?”
“I do, I do. I never should have agreed with their plan. Please, have mercy.”
“Did you have mercy on me, when I begged?”
Lesley shook his head.
“Then accept your fate.”
“What… what do you want me to do?”
“Walk into the water. Give your life willingly. Perhaps they will spare you, if you do,” the creature laughed, dark liquid bubbling from its mouth.
Lesley nodded haltingly and began to walk towards the stairs, stepping into the water, he walked down until he was submerged up to his waist. Then, the hands wrapped around his arms and torso and abruptly dragged him under. For a long moment, it seemed like he was gone, the same as Jack, but a moment later, he was thrown back onto the landing. Lesley raised his eyes, now as black as the water, and the creature smiled again, a tooth falling from its mouth as it did.
“Very good,” it burbled. “You have been baptized and born again into a new life.”
Lesley nodded, a serene smile on his face. Without a word, he rose and walked back into the room we had vacated only a moment before. Outside the window, the raft had been righted and floated serenely on the water. He looked down at Stewart’s body, then picked it up and draped it over his shoulder. Glancing back at the three of us, he winked,
“A snack for the journey.”
Then, he stepped out of the window onto the raft and drifted away.
“Don’t suppose any of you would care to join him?” the corpse of Alan Ross inquired. “Be born anew in the cleansing water?”
We all shook our heads silently.
“Oh well, another time, then.”
And with that, the corpse walked into the water and disappeared.
That night, our usual meals appeared in our rooms, and by the next morning, the water had receded, as if it had never been there. The electricity came back on, and the rain stopped. I was finally able to charge my phone and post this account. I tried asking Manny for more information about his time as a doctor but is as reticent as ever. I will keep trying, though, because Vincent and Al are right about one thing, there is something suspicious about how much he knows that he shouldn’t. But, that is a problem for another day, after all there is no need to rush, we aren’t going anywhere.
Until next time,
Lucy

2023.05.29 19:34 Rusty5th Not able take care of myself, my home. I’m a mess. Not sure what to do.
I’m new to Reddit and it’s nice to find a community that understands this condition. So, this is the first place I feel comfortable explaining my situation and asking for advice. (I’m getting emotional even thinking about telling my story)
I’m a 55 yo gay man. I’ve had issues with my spine and neck that got worse about 15+ years ago. Had 2 surgeries 10+ years ago which, looking back, probably triggered the CFS that had been in the background and not on my radar. Since then it’s been a long story of trying to live a normal life, figuring out there was something else going on preventing me from fully recovering, getting diagnosed with FM, and finally realizing I actually have ME/CFS.
After getting the correct diagnosis and learning about pacing etc I was able to live a life, not like the one I had before, but I was able to carry on. But over the last 2-3 years my symptoms have gotten worse. At the same time, my world has gotten smaller as friends went on with their lives and I’ve become isolated.
My home, which I own, has become an absolute embarrassment. I was already struggling with clutter building up when my dog, who I loved more than myself, got sick and died. Honestly, the only reason I survived losing her is because I still have a cat I also adore. I couldn’t abandon him (I know it may sound like it, but I’m not thinking of harming myself). Anyway, between the symptoms getting worse and being completely devastated after losing my dog, the clutter turned into filth. My energy levels dropped so low that I could barely make it to the kitchen and prepare one meal a day. I’m 6’ tall and was down to 130#. That was my lowest point, in weight and in life.
Since then, I’ve been trying to eat better and I’ve put on about half of the weight I’d lost over the previous 6 months. But between preparing food, cleaning the litter box (not as often as I’d like), my monthly dr appointment, and grocery shopping, I have absolutely nothing left to put into taking care of my home.
My house used to be nice. But things have gotten so bad I haven’t let anyone come inside in 2 years. I had hoped to sell it and move out of Florida but that now feels impossible. And things are falling apart. A section of my fence recently fell. I have a guy who sometimes does lawn work. I was going to ask if I could pay him to haul the fence out for bulk trash pickup later this month. Now, my A/C is on the fritz. Even if I had the money to pay a repairman right now, I’m too embarrassed to let anyone inside my house.
I know the advice might be a version of “get over your embarrassment and ask for help.” I honestly don’t know how to get past the embarrassment and I don’t know who to ask for help.
-It felt, at the same time, good and horrible to put that in writing
-Thanks in advance for any feedback

2023.05.29 18:23 bitchpleaseshutup Is Field Marshal Model overrated?
I was watching an interview of Dr. Daniel Feldmann, an author of a French biography of Field Marshal Model, being conducted on a Youtube Channel called 'Military history not visualized'. As someone who is interested in military history but not very knowledgeable about it, my opinion on Model was that he was a great defensive general and his nickname, the Fireman, was well deserved. However, the author seems to believe that he is somewhat overrated. I will try to summarize his arguments in the next paragraph:-
To be considered a 'fireman', one should be able to prove that the commander in question was able to extinguish a fire more effectively than other commanders. Model's performance doesn't indicate this. As the commander of the Army Group North, he retreated a 150 kilometers. This was also what his predecessor, Von Kuechler wanted to do and would have done anyway, so Model doesn't deserve any credit for it. Then, as the commander of Army Group South as well, he merely implemented Manstein's plan(although the author does say that he cannot be blamed for this as he couldn't have done much else as the leader of the Army Group). Then, during Bagration, he once again retreats till the Vistula river, and the only reason the Soviets stopped there was because they were exhausted, not because of any brilliancy on Model's part. Then, in France he once again retreats about 200 kilometers right until he reaches the German and Dutch border. All of these performances show that he didn't really extinguish any fires. Further, all advancing armies of that period had to stop after advancing for 200-300 kilometers due to logistical reasons. In all of the cases mentioned above, this is likely what happened, as opposed to the armies stopping due to Model being particularly good at defense. The author claims that this can be proven by the fact that the situation in other sectors of the front where he was not in charge was not any worse, and even in those places the Soviets eventually stopped advancing at about the same time despite him not being there. Similarly in the west, where Model was commander of the Army Group B(which was in the north), the allied armies in both North and South France stopped advancing at about the same time. So this too must be attributed to the allied armies having advanced as far as they physically could before having to stop to consolidate. The author does say that he was good as a defensive commander when he could defend on 'prepared position' as can be seen by his performance in 1942 at Rzhev, where the Soviets failed completely, even though they succeeded spectacularly in Stalingrad at the same time, because he had time to create static defenses. The author also attributes his success at the Huertgen forest to this. He contrasts these cases with his defensive abilities in cases of fires that have already spread, which he claims were not anything special.
Does this seem like a fair assessment of his career? And if so, should he be included in the list of other overrated Wehrmacht generals, like Rommel?

2023.05.29 17:26 I_Only_Post_NEAT Should I cluster shrubs or keep them separate in a mixed hedge?
Came here to ask here as well as in
landscaping:
So I been thinking back and forth on this for a few weeks and can’t really decide. Im looking to put in a mixed border hedge of native northeast shrubs for a 120foot stretch between a front lawn and sidewalk/road. Not really looking for privacy, just a nice buffer that will replace the deer eaten arborvitaes and also feed the birds. So my goals are to plant inkberries, bayberries, clethra, beach plums, winterberries, and red twig dogwoods. Maybe spread out here and there will be a small flowering tree or a conifer
What I’m trying to decide on is if I should cluster like species together, or spread them out individually in the hedge? Behind the house is a forest so I guess there’s a woodland sort of aesthetic going. And the front has no large shade trees and is very sunny.
If I cluster it’ll be something like 3 beach plums, then 3 inkberry, then 3 bayberry, then 3 winterberry, and in between the different species cluster would be a small tree or sort. If I do mixed then it’ll be just alternating shrubs.
I’m leaning toward the clustering of like species but I dont know if it’ll make my yard look like some kind of arboretum/nursery..
Thanks in advance!

2023.05.29 16:31 SleeplessFromSundown The Séance Club - The End of Windhaven Manor [Final]
This post is the final part of this story. Sorry it has taken so long to get through. And I'm not sure I even understand all of it yet. If you're new, this all started
here. The previous part (Part 7) is
here. Thank you to everyone who followed along.
-----
“Do you see her?” I asked in a meek voice.
“You mean that girl in black?” Harvey answered.
It was her, in the flesh. Her lips parted and formed a malevolent smile. Her dark eyes fixed on mine. My legs turned to solid lead. My feet refused to move. The anxiousness to reach Parker and Juliet and Beth in the cellar crumbled like the wood turning to ash behind us. She demanded my attention.
A hand rocked my shoulder. Harvey. I pushed him away.
“You have to go. Help them. I’ll take care of her.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll be right behind you.”
A mirage of Harvey flitted past Ally and disappeared into the kitchen. Everything blurred, everything but her.
She tilted her head to one side and bridged the gap between us with four slow and deliberate steps. She pushed her right hand out from a long sleeve and ran the black painted nail of her index finger across my cheek, the smooth lacquer cold against my skin. I shuddered as the chill spread like ice creeping up a window.
“It is such a shame to be losing you so soon. We’ve only just met, and yet I feel like we’ve known each other our whole lives. Do you feel it too?”
I shook my head. “Let me go.”
“We’re past that now Sam. I considered if we could coexist, you and I. It gave me a thrill knowing there is another one out there like me. But you insist on meddling with my work.”
“You mean locking all those girls in that filthy dungeon where they met their end? And Jane here.”
“The work is sometimes unpleasant.”
“But the pay is good?”
“This isn’t about money Sam. You and I are the same. The pain you felt from not fitting in. The lonely nights lying awake, wishing you could be like everyone else. The stares and the whispers. The rejection from those who are supposed to love us the most. I too know. But where you hid, I searched out a path where my talents were appreciated and rewarded. You don’t hate me Sam. You hate yourself for not thriving like I have.”
“Thriving? Is that what you call it?”
“By all measures yes. I am good at what I do. The best. The only. Or so I thought. And then there is you. A naïve, sheltered little boy who can barely put on his own pants in the morning. It is such a shame. And these so-called friends of yours, that was always doomed to failure. Oh and if you harbour any thoughts of them escaping, know that we blocked the little secret entrance the stable boy showed you. There’s no escape except through the fire. When they pick through the ashes of this building they will find their bones, and yours. Is this how you imagined it turning out?”
I flexed the muscles in my legs, but they refused to move. Ally smiled.
“It’s useless now Sam.”
I heard the faint whisper of Juliet’s voice in my head. She pleaded with me. Come on Sam, you can do this. I remembered the last encounter with Ally, outside the wall separating Windhaven Manor from the world. Ally had put me in the white room. I had broken free. I had overcome her power once. I had to do it again.
I took a deep breath in through my nose and cried out and willed my feet to move. Electricity coursed through my body and I directed it down to the floor. My left heel separated from the floor and that set the whole thing in motion. The dam burst. I lurched forwards and overbalanced and sprawled to the floor.
Ally crouched beside me and chuckled. “Some would call it a tragedy for a child to die so soon after learning to walk.”
I looked back towards the front of the house. The fire burned hot. Thick black smoke circled up the huge open space of the gallery. Portraits hanging on the wall bubbled and curled as flames consumed them.
A figure appeared at the foot of the staircase. The spectre of Crown. The goons had dragged his lifeless corpse out of the house, but stood before me was the spirit with unfinished business. The ugliness of his actions showed through now in death. His skin was sallow and wrinkled. His head too big for his body and his teeth yellowed. A grotesque monster made worse by his mortal demise.
Ally whispered in my ear. “He knows it was your meddling that brought about his end. I’ll leave you two alone.”
She brushed my cheek with the back of her hand and stood. As she walked away leather straps materialised out of thin air and pinned my body to the floor.
The spectre of Crown grew before me, swelling in size until he had to crouch to stay below the chandelier. He clenched his fists and with burning red eyes let out a guttural growl that skipped my ears and penetrated directly into my skull.
I tried to pull my hands to my ears but they would not come. It made no difference. The roar coming from Crown stabbed the inside of my head like a thousand daggers. I lifted my head and the growl grew to a scream that ricocheted around the inside of my skull. I couldn’t take much more. It felt as though my head would explode.
Guilt bubbled up and mingled with the fear and I shrank into the floor and wished for it to swallow me. They were down there, the only friends I had known, banging against a locked door denying their escape. I sobbed. I sobbed like I had the night my parents turned from me.
In the pit of my stomach something else grew. A seed of frustration born of a lifetime existing in a world that didn’t make sense. A world where I had no idea who I was and what I could or should do. A world in which I hid. I couldn’t do that now.
Juliet’s voice as clear as day, cutting through the racket of Crown’s scream. Do it Sam. I gritted my teeth and electricity buzzed somewhere deep inside, at first dull and imperceptible, and then amplified and resonating until it peaked into a deafening roar.
Above Crown the bulbs in the chandelier glowed white. He swivelled his head and watched them dumbly.
I concentrated, felt the energy forming an extra limb. Like the arms and legs of a newborn it flailed spasmodically. I fought to control it, to turn it to my will. I focussed on the straps pinning me to the floor. The electricity fed into the straps and turned them hot. For a moment I feared they would scold my skin, and then in a moment of release they split and flung upwards.
I picked myself up off the floor and faced the spectre of Crown. Like a spent boxer throwing one final punch I threw out my hands and screamed, willing Crown to be quiet and be still. Demanding he be so.
The floor shook. The dozens of bulbs in the chandelier shattered. The giant spectre of Crown diminished and the screaming inside my head softened until it was no more. Crown’s eyes opened wide as his mouth stitched together and his arms wrenched behind his back. I flicked my hand like I was swatting a fly and Crown flew into the corner of the room and slumped to the floor.
I bent over and rested my hands on my knees. My muscles ached, like I had run a marathon. Shadows played on the floor. I sucked in air and smoke and spluttered and coughed.
In the hallway the silhouette of Ally. She turned and shook her head. The heat of the fire intensified and crackled at my skin. If we were to make our escape, she could not be here to block us. I straightened and strode towards her.
I cycled furiously through the events of the last few days, searching for something to defeat Ally. I had to do to her what she had done to me. The time for running and breaking her spells was through.
I closed my eyes and concentrated. I stripped away everything except for the two of us. The crackle of the fire replaced with silence. The smell of the smoke disappeared. The heat washed away. One by one I shut down all my senses. When I opened my eyes a monotone room of white. Sterile calm had replaced the burning insides of Windhaven Manor.
Her eyes scanned the room and she giggled. “Cheap tricks won’t get you far,” she said. “And you learned this one from me.”
The white rippled as if the walls were made of water. She was fighting it. I concentrated, focussing all my energy, all my will. The ripples slowed and then stopped.
“You’re a fast learner,” she said. “But I have been doing this for more than a weekend.”
Strips of colour permeated the white. A rectangle of tile appeared on the floor. And then some blue from the curtain. Enough of a smouldering wall to let in some smoke. The acrid smell reached my nose and I spluttered. As each wedge of colour appeared, I filled it back in white. But it was a sinking ship and the pail I held to bail out the water would not be enough.
Ally grunted under her breath. A grunt of frustration. The white room shook and made a sound like a train bearing down.
I had to bind her. I raised my palm and coils of rope rose from the ground and oscillated like snakes around her. She swatted them away and wrenched them from the ground and flung them at my feet, limp and unmoving.
“It won’t be that easy,” she sneered.
My arms jerked behind my back. She bound my wrists and then my ankles. She pursed her lips and blew as if extinguishing a single candle on a birthday cake, and it was enough to send me to the floor. I couldn’t do this on my own. I needed help.
I shut my eyes and concentrated my energy not on my bindings, but on the woods at the back of Windhaven Manor. On the girls who escaped the dungeon and now roamed the forest, watching the house burn from behind the barrier Ally constructed.
I fed the energy coursing through my body into the giant snowdome structure until it burned hot and then like the globes in the chandelier, it cracked and exploded into the night sky. The spirits of the girls watched the shards disappear and then strode towards the Manor.
I turned my attention to the tiny room beside the pantry, where Jane Laughlin lay bound to the bed. I stood beside her and lay my hand on the shackles binding her to the bed. She shuddered as the mask came free from her mouth and then stood as the shackles broke.
I opened my eyes and the white of the room flickered off and then back on again like bad reception on a television. I had to keep the white walls up long enough for them to draw near. For them to be ready when the façade fell. Ally strode towards me, exuding confidence.
“You can’t beat me Sam.”
Ally squeezed her hands into fists and screamed. In a burst of energy she wiped the white room clear and we were back in the burning house. The air was thick with smoke. Behind me a timber beam tumbled from the ceiling and crashed to the floor. The heat and smoke sucked the moisture from my insides and I heaved out a series of coughs.
Ally opened her eyes and smiled. She had bested me. But then they came. The girls from the dungeon and Jane Laughlin surrounded her. The sum total off all the pain and hurt inflicted in this place. Everything Ally had worked to keep hidden from the world.
They lurched at Ally. She raised her hands and pushed them back one by one as they went for her. She spun on the spot, trying to keep them at bay. She could not hold them all back. The sheer weight of numbers overwhelmed. They leaned in and pushed their heads into hers and showed her what those men had done. Made her feel it. The fear and despair and anger of each individual stacked together and Ally crumpled to the floor holding her head.
“Make it stop,” she said.
They kept at her.
Jane Laughlin sidled over to the base of the stairs where Crown sat, bound and with his mouth stitched. She considered him, restrained and helpless on the floor as she had been. He fought with his restraints, and then whimpered, as she had. As I ran for the pantry and the wine cellar, the corridor filled with the muffled sound of his screams.
The door to the cellar stood open and I made the descent of the stairs in three leaps. The enclosed space already full with smoke. At the end of the long corridor leading outside, Parker and Harvey shouldered the door. Juliet and Beth screamed encouragement. The door would not budge.
“We can’t go that way,” I yelled.
They raced back up the long corridor. A sudden rush of emotion bubbled up to the surface. I was so happy to see them all still alive. My lower jaw rattled and my hands shook. I fought to hide it.
Beth reached me first. “Sam, you’re ok.”
I blubbered a response and took in a lung full of smoke. We had to get out.
The fire raged outside the kitchen door. A wave of flame climbed up and spread across the ceiling. A subtle cracking sound from above intensified and a chunk of the upstairs floor came crashing down through the ceiling, blocking the rear door. We couldn’t get out the back. The only way now was back through the house. A ball of flame whooshed through the doorway and I put my arm up too late, my eyebrows wilting in the heat.
We crouched together in the middle of the kitchen, lowering our heads to get the last of the remaining oxygen. Malicious red flames and choking black smoke surrounded us on all sides.
“Where do we go now?” Parker’s words came out between coughs. Tears streaked down his cheeks. Soot covered his brow. I wished I had an answer.
Then he was there, standing over Parker’s shoulder. Leon. With the protective bubble gone, he too was free to come in the Manor.
“The fire has not yet consumed the dining room. But you don’t have long.”
I looked vaguely in the direction of the kitchen door and blinked back the stinging from the smoke. “I don’t think we can find it in this.”
“Follow me.”
I pulled my shirt up over my head. “We have to go. The dining room, we can make it. All together on three.”
I shouted out the numbers, the sound drowned out by the roar of the fire. I grabbed Beth’s hand and yanked her into action. Leon led the way and I kept my eyes on his heels. Together we were a flurry of arms and legs bounding for the dining room. I gritted my teeth against the heat. We burst through the doorway and everything turned orange.
From below the sweater pulled tight down over my hair, I shot a glance over to the floor of the grand gallery where I had left Ally writhing on the floor. She was not there now. Nor were the spectres of the girls.
I followed Leon’s heels into the dining room. The great wooden table smouldered in the centre of the room. Brilliant orange flames consumed the thick curtains. Parker spotted his camera still atop the tripod and set to pulling the camera free before Harvey grabbed his arm and yelled something that sounded like ‘leave it’.
Harvey grabbed one of the heavy chairs with their high backs and velvet cushions and heaved it at the window in the back corner of the room. The chair disappeared into the darkness of the night and Harvey kicked at the glass shards left behind. Parker joined. We piled out the opening.
I drank in the fresh cool air of night, staggering over the narrow path beside the house and to the small strip of grass beyond. Parker collapsed beside me and pulled the laptop out from under his shirt. He tapped at the casing and for a moment a brief smile flashed across his face, but it did not last long. He wiped soot and sweat from his face with shaking hands.
Harvey checked us all in turn, like a parent fussing over their children. We had scrapes and bruises and our skin was red and raw, but we were alright. We had survived. He ran to the front of the house and came back with palms held out by his sides. The man in the black suit, the goons Ponytail and Beanie, and Ally were all gone, along with the black van and the BMW.
Huddled together, we watched the fire consume Windhaven Manor, bright reds and oranges lighting up the windows and thick black smoke tumbling into the purple haze of sky. It was almost morning, the horizon signalling the coming of the sun.
Leon stood apart on the grass. I went to him.
“Thank you for coming back for us.”
He shrugged. “It’s something. It isn’t enough to make up for the rest.”
“You saved our lives. And those girls, they had their chance to meet their tormentors. That’s something too.”
He nodded. “What happens now?”
I turned my head sideways. “I’m still learning how all this works.”
The red of the fire reflected in his eyes. “Me too. I might go for a walk in the woods. I always liked it out there.”
He glided across the lawn and entered the trees and was gone.
The sound of sirens fought with the crackle of the fire. The fire brigade and the police. I got to my feet and shuffled to the front of the Manor. The burnt out carcasses of our cars stood by the low height wall. Black soot smudged the stone façade above the windows and the doors.
By the oak tree on the ocean side of the house stood Jane Laughlin. She peered down into a hole dug at the base of the tree. A pale and withered hand poked up out of the dirt. Her hand. They had meant to remove the body, but had aborted the task and fled.
A fire truck appeared at the head of the driveway and then another. They sped down the gravel and came to a sliding stop. A lone police car followed. Harvey sidled over.
Jane looked to the horizon. Out on the cliff edge stood a figure in a red dress. She recognised her sister Kylie immediately and ran down the slope. The two sisters embraced in the first light of the sun. I turned to the whoosh of water through a hose from the fire trucks and when I turned back, the Laughlin sisters were gone.
The members of The Séance Club, which I now consider myself a part, sat together on the low-height stone wall as the firefighters extinguished the flames consuming Windhaven Manor. The house was quiet now. The nausea and vibration I had felt that first night replaced with calm.
The police stripped the compound clean for the best part of a week. They identified Kyle the sketch artist and Hugo from the teeth that survived the fire of the hovel built over the dungeon. Hugo’s wife lay on the back lawn where Beanie and Ponytail had left her. But as to specific evidence of the crimes that occurred, they could not find enough to put a case together.
The two fires and the disappearance of Crown made some headlines, but there wasn’t enough to hang anyone else. The police claimed publicly that there was no link between the fire at Windhaven Manor and the fire at the squalid residence over the back fence. At Harvey’s behest they searched the area with cadaver dogs for the remains of the girls, but they found nothing.
Parker turned his laptop over to the police. They identified the two goons, Ponytail and Beanie, low level thugs who had disappeared from the streets years earlier. Those in the know presumed them dead. It made tracing them almost impossible. Tracing their vehicles lead to a dead end.
The man in black the suit on the other hand might as well be a ghost. On him they found nothing. They have a face, but nothing else.
As for Ally, the girl somehow managed to always turn her face away from the cameras, as if she knew where they were.
I sat in a small room at the police station for three days with Harvey putting the pieces together. He showed me a photograph of an old and gaunt man with a bent back, the last owner of Windhaven Manor before it was sold after his death. He had to be the man with the bent back from the ceremony in the dungeon, but I could not be certain. I never saw his face. Of the faces I did see, we knew Crown and Kyle and Hugo, but the others were harder to pinpoint.
At the end of it all Harvey sighed. There was nothing more we could do. But we could rest on the knowledge that the key players in the ceremony were all now dead.
Questions nagged at me. Where was Ally and what was she doing? Would she try to find me? Who was she working for?
That was the biggest question of all. Who was at the top and pulling the strings? Harvey wasn’t giving up. He was a dog with a bone at the best of times, and now he had a taste of blood. He refused to go back to the police even after Crown’s departure, which he described as the removal of a cancerous limb.
Harvey called me after the dust settled on everything. I told him that the trail had gone cold and I had no idea where Ally was. For all I knew she had evaporated into thin air. Harvey thought it unlikely, and I agreed. He told me it was time for some old-fashioned detective work. The names of the goons would be a start.
And there was something else Harvey mentioned, something that I had almost forgotten. He had always believed that his investigation into the disappearance of the girls was the reason one of his colleagues was murdered. Crown confirmed as much in the bedroom right before he was shot. Harvey thinks there is something to it. Another thread to pull, and he has a hunch. For now he’s keeping his cards close to his chest until he has some proof. I almost pressed him on the issue but decided I’d rather put it all behind me.
The story made headlines in the local press for a while, but ultimately it fizzled into a non-story, quickly forgotten by a public with a short attention spans. We all waited for a reckoning from within the police ranks, but it never came. Harvey predicted that’s the way it would go, and he was proven right.
The one item they did recover was a gold necklace with a heart pendant. The necklace Jane Laughlin wore the night of her death. The police found it where the black van had parked. After a few days in the possession of the police, Harvey arranged to have the necklace released to the family of its former owner.
The following day Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin appeared on the local news, thanking the efforts of those who recovered the remains of their daughter. It was closure, though not the kind they had hoped for. Both their girls were dead.
A week later The Séance Club convened in Beth’s apartment. Parker and Juliet were already there when I arrived. It was cathartic to talk about the events at Windhaven Manor, to compare stories and scars. I guess that’s why they have the saying about a problem shared.
After a brief silence, Beth asked, “Are you going to talk to the parents of Jane and Kylie?”
I shook my head. “What will I tell them?”
“That their daughters found each other out by the cliff edge.”
“And what about the agony of their deaths? Should I tell them that too? Besides, it doesn’t feel right. None of this feels right to me yet. And what weight do my words hold over those of some Priest talking about how he knows their souls are at rest.”
“Because you really do know.”
I shrugged. “I can’t prove any of it.”
Truth was I had no idea how to integrate the things I could see and do into my life. From childhood all I had wanted was to be like everyone else. For people not to stare or whisper as I walked by. To find acceptance. Sitting with my three new friends at Beth’s tiny kitchen table, with our shared experience behind us, I finally had it. This could be the start of something.
Parker was already planning the next Séance Club trip. An abandoned farm up north with mysterious sightings going back centuries. Juliet was already on board. I told them to wait. I couldn’t jump back in right away.
I was the last to leave, Beth and I sipping mug after mug of coffee and sharing comfortable silence. When I sighed and told her I should go, she grabbed my arm.
“I’ve never had a real family, and then I found Juliet and Parker. The Séance Club became my family. Whatever happens we are there for each other. And we mean it when we say we want you to join.”
I thought about that all night, unable to sleep.
The next morning I called Parker.
An abandoned farm up north you say?
* * * *
I navigated to the narrow alley and checked the time. The Exchange should be open. It looked out of context in the Saturday morning light. No bright light spilling from the window. No surge of Friday night after work traffic.
I slipped in the front door. A lone man lifted upturned stools down from the bar. He had his back to me and I crept across the hardwood floor in the direction of the stairs down and the bathrooms.
The vibration swelled in my chest, but I did not fear it. A dull pain rose in the base of my skull, but I gritted my teeth. A man wearing a pair of rough leather shoes came from the other end of the corridor and stopped before me.
“Are you here to help?”
I nodded.

2023.05.29 15:34 approvethegroove People probably aren't going to buy your terrariums
Edit: I'm sorry I wasn't trying to come across as bitter as one comment said, I really have no issue with you trying. I just don't want anyone disappointed by market response or valuing their work based on how much it sells / what it sells for.
TL;DR: You probably aren't going to make any money off of terrariums. That doesn't mean they don't look great! It's just that most people who like terrariums would rather spend that money on supplies to make their own. You're more than welcome to try, just try to be courteous of how and where you choose to promote your products. This hobby isn't likely to fund itself, but I included a section at the bottom with some advice for participating in this hobby without breaking the bank. Keep making your awesome terrariums, we love them, you can even try to create a market for them! Just don't let money be one of your motives for making them, because you aren't likely to make much doing this.
I don't mean to be a downer, but I noticed a few posts here asking for pricing and selling advice and I kind of wanted to clarify this for anyone getting started hoping to make some money out of this hobby.
People probably aren't going to buy your terrariums. Don't get me wrong, it's not because they don't look great! It's just that generally speaking anyone who's interested in terrariums is already making them themselves. There might be a market for someone creating very large and/or elaborate and advanced setups for high dollar customers, but I'd imagine even that market has very low demand and is supplied by people with very advanced knowledge of terrariums.
I'm not trying to tell you not to pursue your terrarium dreams, I just want you to understand that making and selling terrariums is not going to be easy money. It might not even be any money. Terrariums are definitely an art and given how quickly this community is growing, maybe someday it'll be something more people are willing to pay for rather than only create themselves as with any other art form, but as of right now we just aren't really there yet.
If you want to sell terrariums because you'd like to foster a market for a growing art form that you appreciate, I'm okay with that. If you'd like to sell terrariums because you'd like to make money, I just think you're going to be disappointed. I understand that this hobby is addicting and can be expensive, but unfortunately it's not something that could easily fund itself.
Here's the terrarium financial advice I mentioned in the TL;DR:
Personally, I try to have "cheap terrariums" that I can easily make quickly and cheaply whenever I'd like to, and "expensive terrariums" that I put more time, effort, thought, and money into. If you're in the mood to make a terrarium, you can always go outside and find some moss to stick in a mason jar and arrange it in a way you find visually pleasing. You don't have to give everything you make a 10 layer substrate using only the finest of materials. If you want to make something a little more advanced, then go the extra mile and put careful consideration and time into planning, designing, and arranging it. You can get bags of orchid bark, coco coir, sphagnum moss, etc., all for under $10 each, but obviously that's going to add up if you're making 10 terrariums a month and putting a complex substrate mix into every one.
Find a container (secondhand stores are worth checking), and spend some time imagining what you'd like it to look like. Trust me, spending time choosing the plants you want, researching their care, determining the best possible setup for everything, and ultimately designing a terrarium that you know will look good and remain happy can be just as fun as actually putting stuff in your container. And while you spend time planning that terrarium, you can be saving money for the things you'll need. And like I said, whenever you're just itching to put something in a container, you can always go outside, grab some moss and some cute little weeds, and experiment. When you don't use your pricier terrarium resources as often and put more thought into how you use them, your supplies will last longer and you will get a nicer final product out of them. The money you put into them will feel even more worth it. Over time you'll grow your stash of supplies. It's a lot easier to make a fancy elaborate terrarium when you only need a sphagnum refill and some clay because you already have the activated charcoal, leca, perlite, gravel, and whatever else you'll need for this particular setup from past projects.
If you're down on funds and truly want to put some thought into a terrarium, go outside and see what you can find. There are so many adorable little plants out there that aren't even in human cultivation yet, and sometimes that's truly because we've dismissed it as a weed and it hasn't entered the circles that would think otherwise yet. Google lens is great for identifying plants, even weeds. Try to identify some small plants, find what their general needs are, and see if you can experiment with it in different conditions using the supplies available to you. You could be the first person to recognize their terrarium potential and pin down a good setup for them! It'll take some trial and error, but I personally think it would be very cool to see people finding new beautiful terrarium plants that everyone else dismisses and tries to replace with invasive grass species.
You can truly put as much or as little into this hobby as you'd like. You don't need to spend endlessly to have fun with it. I've thoroughly enjoyed making terrariums that I personally find very pleasing using stuff I found in the lawn. Keep making, learning, growing, and feel free to share it all here. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see it!

2023.05.29 15:31 Gumbybum Lore Discovery Part 3/3: Fishbones, Flatwoods, and Colonel's Burning Secret
Disclaimer: This post is long, so you may want to save it and read it later. Also, I put a lot of time into both researching this and writing it up. So if all you have is negative feedback, kindly keep it to yourself. Finally, there’s a lot more that I’ve been looking into beyond the scope of this write-up. If you’d like to join my exp-LORE-ation efforts, please let me know.
Recap: Part 1 establishes that Colonel is the same kid who was playing with his “baer frends” at the Palace of the Winding Path. Part 2 establishes that Darius Angler was the author of the 4 Untitled Poems.
Edit: Hyperlinks don't seem to be working so I'm manually pasting my references to parts 1 and 2.
https://www.reddit.com/fo76/comments/1327e9a/lore_discovery_responder_colonel_flatwoods_was/ https://www.reddit.com/fo76/comments/135xf3y/lore_discovery_part_2_responder_colonels_postwa TLDR (mad spoilers up in here):
Fishbones led the raid that killed Colonel and all the Responders in Flatwoods, and he could very well be Darius Angler’s brother. Colonel may have been up to something nefarious with the children of Flatwoods (but not in that way). Ra Ra might be Ward’s granddaughter. And it looks like mole rat teeth are used to craft Day Tripper.
We Begin at the End: November 2096. 13 Bridge Street, Flatwoods, WV. Responder Colonel died in the raider attack on Flatwoods, along with just about every other Responder that resided there. The raiders attacked because a Chem Addict stole all their food and chems and fled to Flatwoods. You can find her body and holotape just West of the river. But before we get to that, we need to look at what Colonel was up to before he died. Most people probably overlooked this detail because they haven’t explored Flatwoods since they were level 3, and at that point they didn’t have a jetpack or the Marsupial mutation. But Colonel’s front AND back porches are completely railed off. If you make it over the front railing, you’ll find the corpses of Colonel and (likely) the raider that killed him, Colonel’s second “Survivor Story,” and a stroller with an intact doll in it. Colonel was the “caregiver for children” in Flatwoods, so the stroller may have once been for an actual baby.
But on the back porch, Colonel was burning books, files, documents, and the contents of a mysterious duffel back on his grill. Colonel definitely had a secret and he was literally trying to burn the evidence. And that secret was his past with the Diehards and Darius Angler. If you follow the road West out of Flatwoods, you’ll eventually arrive at Hillfolk Hotdogs, which is the site of Untitled Poem #3 and the former home of Colonel when he lived with Angler as a child (you can find one of his “baer frends” on the kid-sized bunk bed). But inside the bus(?) at Hillfolk’s, you’ll also find similar documents and a duffel bag, just like the kind Colonel was burning in Flatwoods when he died. As a matter of fact, there are other similarly suspicious duffel bags and file caches along the Ohio River. And this takes us to Ohio River Adventures.
Fishbones is a Dirty Rat Bastard: In the exact same way that the Diehards returned to Crater, a former territory of theirs (and site of Untitled Poem #2), the Diehards also returned to Ohio River Adventures. Now, O.R.A. gets overlooked because there is no main quest line that keeps you returning to this area (maybe the grind for Raider Rep), but this place is former Diehard territory too. Now, it is critically important to know that both Fishbones (Bones) and Blackeye are O.G. Diehards. Blackeye was almost certainly Colonel’s 1st grade teacher back at the Palace of the Winding Path. But what about Bones? Well, my friends, I bet I’m about to tell you something you didn’t already know:
When Margie McClintock died in 2096 (as inferred what Rose tells us during the main quest), Meg Groberg took over and soon thereafter led the Diehards out of Appalachia before returning years later (that, you already knew). You probably also already knew that before Margie died, Meg and the other Diehards went against protocol and “shot first” when robbing people. Meg was a true raider in all the ways that Margie was not. But what you probably didn’t put together is that Margie died around the time that Flatwoods was attacked. According to the Chem Addict from Flatwoods:
“Chems Addict: Well, this is it I guess. Rock bottom I think they call it. I still miss him. Billy. I knew he was too young for me, but he made me feel good. Though it's the old Billy I really miss. The one who used to do nothing all day with me but listen to the radio and drink. I shoulda got out sooner when Billy and his buddies started torturing little cats and dogs. His friends... were no good. But that didn't stop me anyway. I can't believe my wake up call was watching people's heads... get stuck on spikes. So... what is an old gal like me to do? Steal all the food. Steal all the chems. And get the hell out of there. *laughs* I'd trade my last bite of food just to see the look on their faces. Oh, I know it's going to piss off Billy's friends, but I don't give a damn. I tell myself I should feel sorry for the little town across the river. But if I'm being honest, and that's what this tape is for, I don't really care. I call myself an addict, but it ain't the chems that finally got me. It was always Billy.”
I want to emphasize the “heads on spikes” part, because that’s something Margie would never tolerate. But Meg on the other hand let raiders be raiders. The other thing that I want to point out is “Billy.” I’m not saying for certain that this Billy is the same as Darius Angler’s brother, but I am saying that technically no body was ever recovered from the molten steel, and Angler didn’t see the accident happen because he didn’t work at Grafton Steel anymore. It’s possible that “Billy Angler,” who didn’t quit because “he needs the money,” could have taken out some kind of insurance policy, named his chem addict girlfriend as the beneficiary, faked his own death, and skipped town. Do I know for certain that this happened? Of course not. But what I do know is this: FISHBONES’S REAL NAME IS BILLY!!! The reason he’s obsessed with the letter B is because that’s his first initial. You see, at first I thought the raiders that wrecked Flatwoods were Cutthroats because of their whole feud with the Responders. But then I learned that the Flatwoods attack was caused by a bunch of chems that the Addict stole, and the Diehards were Appalachia’s great chems supplier (thanks to Angler). Furthermore, Fishbones’s current operation is spiking Mirelurk meat with an addictive substance (chems). And since Bones is an OG Diehard, it means he was the piece-of-shit raider that attacked Flatwoods and killed Colonel.
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Fishbones A Bit About Bruiser: I found a few interesting details about Bruiser at Ohio River Adventures, but nothing too profound. We know that he used to play football, his mascot was a “battle bear,” and that he spent some time in a vault. The likeliest conclusion from this information is that he’s from Grafton, given that’s the only high school in the region with a football field and it’s next to the makeshift vault that formerly housed a few raiders before the BOS took over. If you look up the IRL Grafton High School, you’ll find that it’s on Yates Ave (likely the namesake of Sofie Yates, a Responder turned Raider in Flatwoods) and their mascot is the “Bearcat.” Also, all the varsity jackets in FO76 have the letter B on them, but that’s more Fishbones’s thing. But none of this has anything to do with Colonel or Angler, so let’s move on.
The Charleston Cartel (2079-2082): From the Charleston Capitol Building terminal entries, we know there was a massive chem trade happening in Charleston at this time:
“Name: Matoukas, George
Date of Crime: 10.09.81
Description:
300 Block of Oak. Based on anonymous tip, Responder Atkins found subject peddling vast amounts of illegal chems out of his home. Over 300lbs of illegal chems found in the subject's basement.
Resolution:
Matoukas sentenced to 5 years hard labor under close supervision, with possibility of parole for good behavior. Chems were seized and destroyed.”
Since the Diehards’ operation at the Palace of the Winding Path effectively ended with the great rapture of ‘79, it only makes sense that the Diehards would have to adapt their drug trade elsewhere. If you actually look for raider activity in Charleston (outside of the courthouse), you won’t find a lot, but what you will find is very telling of their operations. You’ll find a dead raider at the chemistry workbench inside Hornwright Industrial Headquarters. You’ll find a few dead raiders in/above the pharmacy on the south side of town. And you’ll find a dead raider lurking outside the doctors’ offices (which is NOT the hospital) to the north. And this takes us to Dr. Joseph.
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Joseph_(Fallout_76))
Dr. Joseph was a psychiatrist in Charleston who practiced both before AND after the Great War. He had the authority to refer patients to Allegheny Asylum and write prescriptions; Prescriptions that would be filled at the pharmacy on the south side of Charleston. To one patient, P. Davis, he prescribed Day Tripper. This insightful detail is why the Diehards were operating in Charleston in the first place. As many seasoned players have observed, Day Tripper is not craftable in this game; You can only find it out in the wild. Consider the following terminal entry from the Palace of the Winding Path:
“Log: 12.29.77 Since the war, incense ingredients have been hard to come by. We started rationing weeks ago, in anticipation of this, and doses are much lower. The sedative effects of the incense are a priority, to keep people from freaking out.
I've begun to improvise with some other ingredients and found some creative ways of stretching the supply, at least until things return to relative normal. Other chem supplies are plentiful.”
So here’s what I think happened. If the Diehards were in dire need of Day Tripper to make their custom chems (see: Making Incense), and the Responders had a healthy supply of Day Tripper locked inside a pharmacy in Charleston, and there was also a doctor who wrote prescriptions for Day Tripper, then all the Diehards needed to do was register a new patient with Dr. Joseph. Enter: Darius Angler.
Darius Angler was batshit crazy (if in doubt, refer to his manifesto). Angler, who now resided at Hillfolk Hotdogs, was also just a short trip up the New River from Charleston. He would periodically visit Dr. Joseph, get his prescription filled like a meth-head scoring Sudafed, and used the trip as a cover to smuggle the refined chems into the city. Essentially, I think he just made a loop around the southwest “island” of the Forest (area surrounded on all sides by 3 rivers, referred to as “Zone D”). The loop around Zone D functioned as a supply chain/assembly line for producing the chems that were being smuggled into Charleston. There’s a lot of suspicious stuff happening around here: Raider activity, duffel bags/files, bridge control, coffin conspiracies, etc. that I had to edit out for length, but I’ll try to summarize it here.
Hillfolk Hotdogs is where Angler and Colonel raised mole rats for reasons I’ll explain later. Follow the Ohio River south and you’ll soon come to a boat that’s not far away from a crashed truck loaded up with industrial chemical barrels (useful for producing industrial quantities of chems). South of that is a tent with a duffel bag. Further south you’ll find a 3-story house with suspicious files and a duffle bag hidden in the attic (just like at Hillfolk’s). South of that are some dry-docked boats with a chem box and a duffel bag. Even further south is Ohio River Adventure (a current Raider base of operation that served a similar purpose back then). Southeast of there, by Lewis & Sons, is a little “boat” with 2 stuffed bears, which I think was left behind by Colonel as he reenacted his river adventures with Angler using his bears. Southeast of there is a floating Nuka-Cola structure with a submerged safe guarded by 2 more bears, one of which has a liquor bottle. I think this is a dead drop and the bears are another work of Colonel’s. Heading East up the River you’ll find a raider-operated “store” at the end of a questionable bridge. Further east is Charleston, where George Matoukas was distributing the chems. And on the return trip down the New River is another dead drop directly beneath the Bridge on the west side. It’s a safe by a couch with a bear and Jangles (I think Jangles is supposed to represent George). Again, I think that this big loop is a supply chain/assembly line for moving chems and the components needed to make chems.
The smuggling operation also deviously involved Colonel and his “Baer Frends.” If you jetpack up to the very top of AVR Medical Center, you’ll find two people who OD’ed on chems, each with a stuffed bear next to them. So I think that either the Diehards were sewing chems inside Colonel’s stuffed bears and using them as drug mules to smuggle chems into Charleston, or that Colonel just climbed to the highest point on the hospital (as he did at the Palace and later in Flatwoods) and left two bears as a memorial. But I’m leaning toward the former because of an unmarked location in the Savage Divide that I found. It’s southeast of Bastion Park right at the bend of the monorail line. It’s essentially a fire pit with a bunch of stuffed bears thrown in it with a few dead party-goers around the area. I think this is the location where the Responders destroyed all of the Chems, bears and all, that they confiscated from George Matoukas. Speaking of George Matoukas….
Curious George and the Rocket: According to the above-mentioned terminal entry, George Matoukas was apparently the only criminal who the Responders sentenced to hard labor rather than exile. If you go to Rollins Labor Camp (formerly Rollins Work Camp), you won’t find a whole lot there other than Blood Eagles. But what you WILL find at the very top of the crane structure are two stuffed bears and a Jangles. Colonel, as a child, had a thing for playing with “baer frends in high places.” I can’t say with any certainty what happened here, but maybe Angler was the one who gave the responders that “anonymous tip” because Matoukas was starting to rub off on Colonel, and Angler didn’t want him growing up to be a Raider. Matoukas gets sentenced to hard labor rather than exile, with a change of parole pending “good behavior,” which means “snitching.” So maybe Angler took Colonel to visit his “friend” at the labor camp (visiting hours are a thing), Angler introduced George to a “rocket,” and Colonel used his toys to recreate the scene. Or not. Who knows? But what I do know is that the shitty poet (Angler) moved on from Hillfolk Hotdogs to go to the Cranberry Bog, and I think the Christmas Flood gave him the perfect reason to leave.
Untitled Poem #3: I’m intentionally skipping Untitled Poem #2, partly because I haven’t found much deeper meaning to it, but mostly because what I think it means is little more than conjecture. #3, on the other hand, I feel like I can make sense of it:
“white cedar leaning against the shadow of our river
peeling like asylum walls
hobbled together around dignity that died long ago
simple things to jumpstart fogged memories
holed as teeth hidden in tin
we leave our things pinned
winning only the stuck wings”
I think the phrase “white cedar leaning against the shadow of our river” is the title of the painting in Dr. Joseph’s office. Or at least that’s how Darius Angler would describe it as if it was some kind of Rorschach test. “Peeling like asylum walls, hobbled together around dignity that died long ago” is a reference to the office wallpaper, and perhaps another one of Dr. Joseph’s clients, Daniel Boone.
“Patient: "Boone, D"
Observations:
Interesting case.
Patient responds only to "Daniel Boone" and indeed seems to believe himself to be the historical figure by the same name. I'd heard that some of the hillfolk can end up a bit off after lack of socialization, but I'd not expected to see such a case.
Advised that he be sent to Allegheny rather than the Penitentiary for further observation.”
There’s only a VERY narrow window of plausibility to suggest that Angler is Daniel Boone, so I won’t. But this entry seems to refer back to Untitled Poem #3, with worlds like “hillfolk” (as in Hillfolk Hotdogs), “Allegheny” (as in asylum), and “the historical figure” (as in dignity that died long ago). I think the line “simple things to jumpstart fogged memories'' refers to the Souvenir Magnet on the fridge at Hillfolk Hotdogs, and I think it came from Lady Janet’s Soft Serve (not Cow Spot Creamery). “Holed as teeth hidden in tin” refers to the mole rats that he was raising with Colonel at Hillfolk’s (the cat bowl on the floor is for the mole rat that walks around the trailer like Fry’s dog from Futurama, just waiting for Colonel to come home). And “we leave our things pinned, winning only the stuck wings,” refers to Angler’s (and Colonel’s) escape from the Diehards. I’m assuming this event took place just after the Christmas flood, once the chem operation in Charleston was destroyed with the rest of the city. But if you remember those dead raiders I mentioned earlier, there are a few more. Outside of Dr. Joseph’s office is a dead raider next to an ammo box. Well, next to him is a makeshift bridge that goes over the highway. And if you keep going in the same direction once you step off the bridge you’ll hit the southwest corner of Wade Airport. Immediately in that corner past the fence is a locked truck-trailer (watch out for the mine) with 2 more dead raiders and a power armor chassis (sometimes). I think the last line of the poem refers to this exact event, leaving his power armor (and compatriots) pinned in the back of the trailer so he can steal yet another Vertibird. Angler flew the automated aircraft to Watoga. Why? I don’t know. But it explains how he got to the Cranberry Bog and why his body can be found just a short distance south of the city.
Untitled Poem #4: Just like #2, I don’t have any deep insight into the specifics so all I can do is speculate. I’ll spare you the details. But what I think it’s about is the very end of his relationship with Colonel. I think the time Angler and Colonel spent together in the unmarked cabin southeast of Sunrise Field was just Angler teaching Colonel to be self-sufficient (hunting, trapping, maintaining weapons and whatnot). I think that when the scorched attacked Harper’s Ferry in 2086 that there was also generally increased scorched activity in the eastern half of Appalachia. The poem describes Angler providing cover fire to, or perhaps just drawing fire away from Colonel as escaped through Big Bend Tunnel, later to be found by the Responders. But again, like with #2, all I can do with this poem is speculate.
The Mysterious Mole Rats: This is a question I’ve had for almost 2 years now, and I think I finally figured it out. Back at the Palace of the Winding Path, there’s a lonely mole rat that lives in the computer room by the garden. There’s also a dead mole rat next to a dead raider pilot by a downed plane that was headed to the Palace from the north. I didn’t know what the Diehards needed mole rats for because I was only looking at the Palace itself. But the answer to this question is found at Lady Janet’s. Everyone thinks that the two bears in gas masks by the chemistry is just a Breaking Bad easter egg. But I think it’s yet another “baer frend” reenactment left behind by Colonel. Do you remember how the cultists at the Palace ran out of ingredients to make the “spiritual incense” and had to improvise? Well, one of the substitute ingredients they used, and the reason they were importing mole rats, and the reason the Diehards took care of the children like they did, is found in the baby carriage at Lady Janet’s.
A basket full of human jaw bones? Yeah…. Teeth. Or more precisely, “baby teeth.” I suppose mole rat teeth would do in a pinch, but as messed up as it sounds human baby teeth were preferred. This is why the Diehards at the Palace were taking care of those first-graders; because six-year-olds shed baby teeth like it’s raining molars! This also answers a question you didn’t even know you had, and it takes us back to Flatwoods. Here’s a note written by Jeremiah Ward who lived in trailer in the town (and the Ransacked Bunker before that):
“I, Jeremiah Ward, resident in the town of Flatwoods, county of... not sure.
Being of sound mind, and not acting under... duress. Mostly.
Hereby declare this letter to be my last will and testament.
Mia gets the house, and everything in it.
It ain't much but that's all I got to give and... she's all I got.
I know she's still alive.
The Responders say the dogs got her, but I know it ain't true.
They been real good to us. Teaching an old geezer like me how to really cook is something. I'll give em that.
But I know they lyin about those dogs. I seen em in the hills. There's some bad folks scoping us out. They took my granddaughter, I just know it.
I'll get you back, Mia. I promise.”
Mia, a baby who slept in the crib in that trailer, was abducted by raiders. And the only raider gang that ever had any interest in kids was the Diehards. And when you remember that the Responders had a foster care program that would later be run by Colonel once he was older, you’ll remember that a shit load of children went “missing” when Billy (Fishbones) attacked Flatwoods. And if teeth (baby, mole rat, or otherwise) was the secret ingredient in Angler’s chem recipe… and Colonel was Angler’s apprentice for a number of years before he joined the Responders… and Colonel was the caretaker of all of the children of Flatwoods… then exactly what was in those documents that Colonel was burning on his back porch?
Full Circle: So after everything, the Diehards lost their crop of children at the Palace of the Winding Path in 2079, but took the children of Flatwoods and left Appalachia. When they came back, they put Fishbones (Billy) in charge of the Ohio River Adventures operation, who is now spiking the mirelurk meat with a potent chem. It’s totally possible that Ra Ra is actually Mia Ward (Jeremiah Ward’s granddaughter). Hell, it’s even possible that Jeremiah Ward is somehow Ward from Foundation. Since Colonel was obviously keeping, and subsequently burning, secrets, I’d say he was also inclined to keep his raider past a secret as well as the truth about his adoptive father. Like he said in his Survivor’s Story, “he was bad.” Perhaps the reason he kept his Diehard history a secret from the Dassa and the other Responders was because he knew that the Responders were the ones punishing and exiling people back in Charleston. But this whole story began the day Darius Angler decided to get revenge on Grafton Steel. And if his brother hadn’t actually died after all, then it would explain why Angler stayed with the Diehards for as long as he did rather than returning to the Free states. Regardless, this entire story began and ended with Billy. “It was always Billy.”

2023.05.29 15:01 autotldr Ukrainian defenders destroy Russian ammunition storage point in forest on Lyman front
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 24%. (I'm a bot)
Ukrainian defenders have destroyed an ammunition storage point of the occupiers on the Lyman front, Luhansk Oblast.
Quote: "Border guards' drones have spotted a carefully disguised military storage point of the occupiers on the Lyman front."
Details: The occupiers tried hiding their ammunition in the forest, but all in vain.
Border guards have reported that aerial reconnaissance of the State Border Guard Service operated perfectly, and the Ukrainian artillery did not miss, either.
Thus, the occupiers' ammunition storage point was destroyed.
The State Border Guard Service has also shared a video showing the detonation.

2023.05.29 15:00 autotldr Indian official suspended for draining dam to retrieve smartphone
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 48%. (I'm a bot)
A government official in central India has been suspended from his job after he ordered a water reservoir to be drained to retrieve his smartphone, which he had dropped while taking a selfie.
Over the next three days, more than 2 million litres of water was pumped out from the reservoir, which was enough to irrigate at least 1,500 acres of land during India's scorching summer, local media reported.
Vishwas told local media the water in the reservoir was unusable for irrigation and that he had received permission from a senior official to drain it.
"Officials of irrigation department told me water was not being used by farmers and I could empty it by 3 feet , so I got the water drained into a canal and made it usable," he was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Authorities later suspended Vishwas after he was widely criticised for wasting water resources.
India is one of the most water-stressed countries and extreme temperatures lead to severe water scarcity, causing crop losses, forest fires and cuts to power.
