2023.06.02 17:55 WatermelonWarlock Murder, Regret, and Forgiveness
This debate revolves around whether or not abortion is "murder". I think that while we as two different sides disagree about whether or not abortion actually is murder, what we can
agree on is that murder is wrong. No one on this sub will consider the premeditated killing of a born
human 8-year-old in cold blood as morally permissible. I think we all, regardless of side, can agree that such a thing is repugnant and anyone that murdered their child in such a way is repugnant.
So I need the PL community to help me make sense of something. I need them to make sense of their reactions to women that say they have had abortions.
If a mother told me she had taken a hacksaw to her born child
, I'd find her repugnant. I wouldn't want her to be around me. I'd tell her to take a fucking hike and never talk to me again. I know that PLers claim that abortion is equivalent to that, but I actually don't see that play out in their reactions to women who admit to having abortions. For example, I took a little browse of the pro-life subreddit and typed in "regret", knowing that the search would bring up women discussing their abortions.
After reading their responses, I don’t think most PLers see it as actual murder
Let's take the example of a woman who was 7 months pregnant and attempted to chemically abort
. The baby ultimately died for other reasons, but she found almost nothing but sympathy. The responses were lots of “I'm so sorry for your loss"; there is only one person pointing out that what she did was, in the eyes of the PL philosophy, an attempted murder
, and that person was called out for their rudeness.
In a more recent thread
, the same thing happened
; the woman admitting to an abortion was met with sympathy, and the only person calling out the "murder" was the same person in the previous thread
who had all of his comments deleted by a mod and he was dogpiled by other users.
This is SO WEIRD, right? Who would be so compassionate and sensitive to the feelings of someone they think is a child murderer
? The first link is about a couple in college where the only reasoning they gave for their abortion amounts to: "we're still college students with financial constraints". Is this not a "convenience" abortion? Why is it being met with such sympathy?
It only gets weirder the more you look. For example, take a post from someone that expresses guilt over their abortion
. The responses are to soothe her feelings and to make her feel it's ok so long as she is regretful and doesn't do it again. "Do not let guilt consume you
", "You've learned from your mistake
", "As long as you don’t do it again and you move on, and you realize your mistakes, you’re ok
". Again, very few people treated her as if she was an actual killer. In fact, she blames others for her choices ("Is it okay because I was pro-choice back then? Like I didn't know. I was a second victim of the situation.") and other people are quick to agree with her
I am all for personal responsibility, but I also see you and your child and all the people like you and your child as victims of pro abortion organisations
You get a similar response to regret exposed by the singer for the Pussycat Dolls when she said she regretted her abortions
. Again, there are a couple
of people in that thread expressing disgust, but the overwhelming theme is to withhold judgment, with users calling out some of the more vocally disgusted PLers.
Now, contrast this with the reaction of someone who talks about her friend's abortion
i'm literally shaking in disgust. I can't even talk to her. Earlier in the convo she said she thought I thought she was a monster for her abortion and I just said no I don't, I know you were scared when you did it even tho I don't agree with it. then we talked more and more about why she did it and I understand the situation better despite not agreeing with the decision... she said she does not regret her abortion. and I immediately changed the subject because I actually started seeing her as a monster (unfortunately).
This isn't a heavily-commented post, but one of the comments says
I'm so sorry. I honestly don't know what I'd do if my friend got an abortion and didn't have any remorseful or sad feelings.
Ok, so looking at all of this... even within the comfort of their own sub, where they don't have to restrain themselves in front of other people, pro-lifers still don't treat this as a murder
. Hell, when they say "don't do it again", they're treating it as if you get a mulligan baby
, like you can kill one but hey, don't do it again. Their disgust is also often not a thing that exists as a result of the act itself, but of whether or not you regret the act
. Like a mother that doesn't feel bad about killing her baby is disgusting, but one that did is just a poor lost soul that made a mistake by getting her "One Free Baby Killing" card punched.
So my question to the PL community is... how is this consistent? How am I supposed to look at a movement that has women who got abortions in prominent pro-life positions of power
? How can I take the commitment seriously when people who paid to have their mistresses get abortions are prominent "pro-life" candidates like Walker
? How can I look at the reactions of users in your OWN SUB and believe that it's a majority opinion that abortion is actually murder equivalent to stabbing a baby when you meet women who had abortions overwhelmingly with soothing words and a dismissal of their responsibility?
How does this track with what you say you believe?

2023.06.02 17:53 aryuh_stuhrk Depression not ADHD
Hi, I am a woman in my mid20s.
About a year ago, I was diagnosed with Persistent Depressive Disorder. I was prescribed escitalporam and it greatly improved my life. No pessimism now.
Fast forward this year, I seek a therapist at a clinic this month. She highly suspected I have ADHD Inattentive Type. I have a list of all the symptoms I was and still am experiencing even though I am no longer depressed because of the meds I am taking (including those problems since I was a child). I am very self-aware and she recommended for me to seek a psychiatrist instead because she doesn't think therapy alone would help my situation. The therapist is a millennial, maybe that's why we got along well. I've never felt so heard and validated my whole life .
So I met with a psychiatrist (only via an online platform) from their clinic today, she invalidated my feelings and I think she dismissed my therapist's diagnosis. Idk if it's because she's kinda old that's why she was a bit condenscending and impatient or maybe bc my internet connection was bad.
Anyway, she only cherry picked a symptom I have from the therapist's notes and discussed it with me — struggling to take a bath and brush my teeth. I even offered to read my list of symptoms but she declined.
She said ADHD people DO NOT struggle with these BASIC things. It is possible that they struggle with house chores, but never with these very basic things. Only depressed people do. I told her that there are ADHD people who struggle with this, she said no, only them (the doctors I suppose) can say so. I also felt like she was disgusted with the fact that sometimes I don't shower for 3 days. I even told her that I am struggling with hygiene ever since I was a child but she dismissed it again.
She invalidated my feelings; She said these stuggles could be the result of stress, I told her I wasn't stressed! Then she said, "Why were you crying earlier and seeking help right now if you're not stressed?"
I know myself, I am not stressed "that way". I am not even sad at all. I am crying because I AM VERY FRUSTRATED. I am frustrated because I can't function like a disciplined adult no matter how hard I try. I wasn't able to tell this because she keeps on cutting me off when I give her my opinion.
She prescribed antipsychotics (amisulpride). I don't I think I need them tbh, as I'm responding well with escitalporam alone. I actually don't mind trying new meds though, but I think the fact that the doctor said that ADHDers don't struggle with hygiene is a red flag and the way she invalidated my feelings.
I am from a third-world country, healthcare isn't free here. My job doesn't have HMO as well so I paid for this consultation with my own money, 50 USD is a lot of money here. I felt like I paid someone just to invalidate and hurt my feelings.
Idk if I should try this new meds, I am afraid to lose more money as I am struggling financially. I am also afraid what if just make everything worse? Minus these symptoms (forgetfulness, time-blindness, hard time starting/finishing projects, disorganized, clumsy, and a lot more) I am actually emotionally okay in general.
Idk what to do anymore. :( Why is it so hard to get better?

Hello all. I've been receiving good feedback and interest so I'll continue with these posts...
Prior post if anyone is curious here
In may I closed 17 positions with an average DTE of 26 for a total gain of $11,301. This was my most successful month ever as the overall market has been roaring and the positions I was assigned on have recovered nicely and then some. SHOP shares were called away for a $5,000 profit which boosted this months numbers tremendously.
Below is just the trades closed in May. Closed May Trades
Total premiums collected since Sep 2022 has increased to $62,441. I have $5,000 in unrealized losses as of today. This number used to be around $20,000, but as the market has recovered, so have my unrealized losses.
This brings Net gain to $57,000 in 9 months on a $300k account or 19%.
Spy is up 7% in the same time frame and the QQQ is up 16% in this timeframe.
Below is a running log of all my newly opened trades plus past trades Current trades
I was assigned one position in May (RVLV) and am currently underwater but I like the company fundamentals and expect it to be a big winner in the future.

I posted my resume on here about a month or so ago and you all provided some fantastic feedback. After implementing some of said feedback, reading the wiki on here about cover letters/applying etc, and utilizing a resume builder instead of a Microsoft template, I wanted to run this back by you all before throwing out applications in mass.
For context: I am currently a Title 1 Interventionist for a local high school. Prior to that I was a high school math teacher. I have completed Exam FM. Will be sitting for P shortly. I have a fair amount of experience with Excel, however how much of it matters in an actuarial context is TBD. Minimal experience with VBA, programming languages, etc however I have completed TIA technical skills course so I'm not unfamiliar with it. Just not proficient yet. I do enjoy learning and utilizing technology. I consistently got marked as "distinguished" on my annual reviews for technology integration in the classroom. So I'm not concerned about my ability to develop the necessary skills as I love learning new things and optimizing my work flow.
Let me know what you all think. Can't tell you how much I appreciate this community! https://preview.redd.it/uox7m044lm3b1.jpg?width=791&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43befa64092a84dc8452e55fce7a1a1567addcf1
2023.06.02 17:52 Doccreator Elder Holland put his name to an essay celebrating the old age of the First Presidency...
Tl;dr The church is being lead by men who have been taught to do things one way, not to question those above them, and fed through a system which places ability and talent aside in lieu of natures indiscriminate removal of people from the living world. https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders/2023/6/1/23736858/elder-holland-essay-on-first-presidency-90th-birthday-henry-b-eyring
First, I think we should certainly listen to those who have age and experience and grow from their insights. However, age is not a pass all certification to be qualified to lead, or the ability to offer valuable input on everything from the naming of individual wards, to large international marketing campaigns. I think there are several instances where extreme age might be a hindrance.
Holland is quoted as saying in the article,
In spite of their age, the breathtaking activity and dazzling impact this First Presidency is having on the Church is already the stuff from which legends are made.
The impacts are listed in this article
, also included in Hollands essay; examples of some of those impacts... updated temple ceremonies, in home curriculum, the restructuring of the youth program, etc... the list contains 99 announcements and changes made during Nelson's time, all attributed to him, most being minor administrative changes likely enacted long before Nelson inherited the mantle of prophet, seer, and revelator.
While I'll admit that these things have had an impact, I'll emphatically disagree on the hyperbole placed behind those impacts as being "the stuff from which legends are made", unless we are to include some infamous results to be legendary.
I believe Nelsons age and experience are actually causing damage to the church, especially since President Nelson is allowed to operate in a vacuum free from critical review and feedback. From my perspective as someone who has spent 20 years in marketing (my own age being made somewhat clear), many things the church says and how they are done are similar to an era represented by a father sitting in his armchair reading a newspaper after a long day at the office, the mother making dinner in the kitchen, and the two children quietly doing what well behaved children do in the corner being seen, but not heard... a time in which President Nelson lived and thrived.
The insistence of 90+ year old church leaders being put on a world wide stage to tell youth how to date, marry, and raise a family is falling short on many fronts. If the youth are the future of the church, they are being lost to messages more relevant and applicable to their lives which seem to be coming from outside of the church's tight grip of doctrinal and social expectations.
I think there is something to be said to listening to our elders and learning from their experiences, but just as important, and maybe more important in light of today's fast paced world, handing the reigns over to individuals who are trained, experienced, and have an understanding of today's technology, messaging platforms and attitudes of the youth of the world is imperative for healthy church growth.
Elder Holland finished with this thought,
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, in matters of the spirit and in those considerations that take us into the patterns of the past, we see that God has deliberately developed a hierarchy — a system of seniority, if you will — that allows for a call to come to a man at a relatively young age. However, that man will be a great deal older by the time he has moved through the apostolic chairs that eventually makes him the senior apostle.
My senior brethren have often said that many of the lessons they have learned in their ministries could not have come except as a function of their time in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, watching, listening and learning in their junior years.
The church is being lead by men who have been taught to do things one way, not to question those above them, and fed through a system which places ability and talent aside in lieu of natures indiscriminate removal of people from the living world.
What are Nelson's qualifications to being in charge of a $250 billion dollar corporation? He lived longer than anyone else at the top. Who will inherit the leadership of the church after he dies? The next person who didn't die, and so on and so on. The church's leadership is essentially an inherited monarchy lacking representation.

2023.06.02 17:49 LewisHamtilon How do I enjoy a life without alcohol?
There's obviously huge financial and mental, physical incentive to quit.
I'm 25 a college graduate male who has a 7 year old kid (teen dad) and work for the government as an admin clerk. I make above middle income bracket and after my first year of probation I will be bumped up higher.
Moved to this town 2 months ago and I've got a nice apartment because I wanted to invest in living in a good place as long as I could afford. Bedroom, kitchen ,shower and enough space for my gaming and lounging. Great.
I met a girl about a few days of moving and the thing was cool but she left to go her original home since she was here on work. Had a thing with another girl. Met a really beautiful girl yesterday at work who studies at the local university.
Anyway man, I've been drinking almost everyday for the entire year now. 3 beers (660ml) minimum sometimes 3 bottles of 1litre beer or wine or both. Going to the bar where people converge for drinks after work since I feel a bit lonely at times.
I just sit and watch my Xbox and don't play sometimes... I enjoy it when I get into it. But it feels like something is amiss.
My job is counter to my strengths. By quite a lot. It's admin work. Repetitive, dull, in the same office environment. My favourite moments are when I get to drive long distance as I sometimes have the duty to do.
I feel like I'm making progress but some of my colleagues are so helicopter ish that it's really cramping me up. Communicating this with them has you getting gossiped about as being unwilling to learn.. it's that kind of office. I'm the youngest person there.
People are so inquisitive in your personal life. I met this pretty girl yesterday and we ended up exchanging numbers and word is already around that I'm using work to meet girls. Which is the first time it's ever happened. It was just a few words that lead to another. Completely innocent.
Me being a smoker is a big deal too. I smoke outside and get a mint then come back.
I work so damn hard. I know for a fact that I work harder than everyone else there.
I used to work in sales and sales would leave me tired because we did field sales. The company was dog water tbh, they gated the commission heavily but the base was quite decent and we clocked at 2pm, 1pm or whenever as long as we got targets... It was so fun..we had a team of 4 guys. In my office I'm one of 4 guys out 11 women.
I drink so much man. I come home extremely tired each and every single day. I wake up at 6:30 and come home at 17:00. I work hard, but this is a new level. But I was daily drinking even before I got this job.. I'm making comfortable money. At 25. I'm pretty much on track and good relative to a lot of people where I am. I live in a highly unemployed country.

2023.06.02 17:46 smokeythoughts Needing (and not getting) space in a relationship
I'm looking for some advice. I'm in a long-term relationship (9ish years) and my partner and I both work from home. He's very likely on the spectrum but not officially tested and I was diagnosed about 10 years ago.
I feel like I need so much space. Today I'm in the middle of a burnout due to being constantly talked to. He's also an alcoholic which makes the whole situation a lot more difficult. I feel guilty for needing to be alone but the more and more time I spend interacting with him, especially when he's drunk, I can feel my mask slip off. He then gets offended that I go semi-mute and expressionless. I have no control over it, and I hate it when I reveal myself in that way but that's the result of not having space.
I have no idea how to ask for space. In the past, I've said 'Hey, I need to work on this thing. I need space' and many variations of that. It usually ends up in an argument because he just won't leave me alone and I get more and more agitated.
I'm getting to the point where I just want to live alone but that isn't an option for me for financial reasons
any advice would be amazing!

2023.06.02 17:44 HoodieTheCat78 100 Days of PSVR2
PSVR2 launch day was only 100 days ago today! There seems to be a fair amount of anxiety on this sub about the future of the platform, but I feel like it’s off to a pretty strong start. Here are some reasons I’m feeling good about PSVR2:
- The hardware is an awesome step up from VR1. The tracking and ease of set up alone make PSVR2 so much more comfortable and inviting to use than VR1. On top of that, there’s the improved resolution and FOV and the fact that the platform is designed to make full use of the PS5’s power.
- The library is solid. Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil Village are undisputed AAA gems that were available at launch with PSVR2. And for those of us who already had the flat versions, they were free. Opinions on No Man’s Sky and Horizon: Call of the Mountain seem more mixed, but personally I adore NMS and Horizon has its champions as well. Beyond the AAA titles, VR2 launched with a ton of fun games that were previously available on other platforms but arguably shine brightest on PSVR2, like Synth Riders, Pistol Whip, Moss 1&2, Pavlov, The Light Brigade, Ragnarock, Tetris Effect, Thumper, and Rez! On top of that, the following weeks brought Saints & Sinners, Walkabout Golf, Red Matter 2, and Nock, which each had their day in the sun as favorites on this sub.
- More games to come! Last week’s showcase brought confirmation that we are getting the full campaign for early GOTY contender Resident Evil 4 Remake. We also got another peek at Synapse, which looks promising. And this week we learned that we’ll be getting the VR version of Bulletstorm, which is gonna be really cool! We all want to see more heavy-hitters announced like Astro-Bot (which I think we’ll get) or Half-Life Alyx (less likely), and I certainly hope we get some more, but in my experience the world of VR is filled with cool surprises. You never know which game is going to become your new favorite, and there are a lot of titles announced for PSVR2.
- It’s selling. Sony recently confirmed that PSVR2 has exceeded PSVR’s sales in the months after each headset’s launch. This is especially impressive given that the PS4 had a bigger install base at the time of the PSVR launch and also considering that PSVR came out much closer to the holidays. And to top it off, VR2 exceeded VR1’s numbers without a retail launch in the biggest market (the US). Judging by the activity on this sub, sales got another boost once VR2 got a retail release in the US on May 12. Before that, all sales in the US were through PS Direct!
- The high-end VR market is expanding. With Quest 3 announced and Apple VR coming, it’s an exciting time for VR. Hopefully the new headsets will bring more sophisticated games that will make good use of PSVR2’s capabilities when they’re brought to the platform.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on how things stand 100 days after launch. I have every expectation that VR2 will continue to grow and bring us cool new experiences. I’ll be really interested to see what happens during the holidays if Sony announces one or two must-haves, we get a Black Friday deal, and there’s a burst of new interest in VR with Apple’s headset arriving.
How’s everyone else feeling?

2023.06.02 17:44 No-Cupcake370 Fucked myself up to help my mom (w fewer, significantly less severe symptoms than me), fucked *all* my shit up, not just health. But y'all. She's all better now, it's ok. (Vent / Rant)
Shared before, but there is brand new fresh bullshit now. Huge rant. Wish I was sorry, dagaf
Iwas pressured into a trip home (US) by mom. Good amount of guilt, and knowing the way she is, I didn't keep a boundary I should have bc woe is her, her baby moved abroad and she has been abandoned (I am 36). Told her I couldn't bc of health, primarily, btw.
She wanted me to help unload her storage unit (?!?) And organize it.
I clarified, foot down, cannot help you in big ways around the house. My health is bad lately, in general w my chronic pain (10+ years) 10, 15lbs is really pushing it. Explain husband does most of the housework, I can barely run small errands alone. Said. Done. She was receptive.
She gets injured couple few days be for I visit. Sciatica. I get that.
I have small flares sometimes, not often. realized I have it often actually (can't walk right or else nerve pain, step wrong, move wrong, bam- shooting nerve pain in back and sometimes down leg- to me, I considered it only to be flaring when my leg felt like it was on fire ) but mainly age difference, shes doesn't take care of herself well anyway and has terrible balance and was a fall huge fall risk when she couldn't walk, already had some big falls over the years, even in her 50's. So basically I had to come to make sure she didn't fall and die. Because she has refused to do even the most basic of exercises, even just for balance, as told to by doctors for years.
My sis is not the most helpful (relatively detached, visits, shows up w a meal if things are bad, fam of her own, etc- but they go out of the way for BIL fam, whole other thing, w/e)
My mom helps w my grandma. (Errands, shopping, rides to and from). Cool.
Uncles are also pretty damn useless, one entirely, one just thinks he better than everyone bc the far right told him he was. He's also a drunk, and the other is on drugs.
So this leaves... Oh, fuck. Me.
Running myself into the gd ground. Migraines, vertigo, nausea (all to some extent daily), plus nerve pain and a slew of other shit.
Feel obligated. Run myself into the ground. Recover slightly after many days, run into ground, repeat ad nauseam (literally).
I've been unable to move much from bed except to painfully limp to bathroom for days at a time. Worst it has ever been bc I got guilted/ felt guilt to run my self ragged.
Mom isn't that bad. She's getting treatments.
The kickers. She whines about her nerve pain. Some sympathy, but not understandif what it was when I mine started a decade ago. Pins and needles make her crazy (brief). Is shocked (no pun) and all aghast and dramatic over electric nerve pain. Meanwhile, I'm sympathetic. She occasionally has realizations "oh, oh wait, you've been dealing w this for years. I didn't know how serious it was." Mean while how dare someone at the ins office or the doctor not take her sciatica seriously and take care of x and y and z.
Kicker- the whole fucking point of that- she had her second injection yesterday (first was steroid into SI joint, this was epidural to the spine)
This. Woman. Today (I didn't sleep bc pain, general misery, and insomnia has plagued me for over a year now).
Tell her I have not slept at all the last 2 evenings. I hurt and I was up sick and in pain last night.
All damn bright and bushy tailed 'look, my pain is way better, and I can walk on it, and look at the range of mobility already after one day!'
Me: limps tf off back to bed. Was almost tired enough to sleep but was taking care of her animals before she told me she's magically better.
Also, should have been a shorter trip, but I had to stay longer bc she needed the help / I was too damn sick to fly anyway. Overstayed my gd visa bc of poor translation on my part. So not only am I stuck in this bs here (oh, btw, FL is here, and I look quee androgynous enough to piss ppl off, maybe bc I am queer). I don't have my husband who was also helped me take care of my own basic needs. And I wanna be home w my husband and my dogs and not this woman that makes me a bit crazy at even the best of times.
And of course she offered to do stuff today, and other days here and there. But like. Maybe don't guilt me into destroying myself in the first place? Idfk also, yes, boundaries. But my mother is just whew and it's not NC bad but it is not fucking listen to her pout and whine about it for the foreseeable future bad. (She was resentful when I canceled a flight for effing covid. Out of SFO. Right before they stopped allowing, but my doctors were like 'absolutely cancel'
TL; DR 69 year-old mom w sciatica, who I destroyed my health to help (despite her physically being more able) bc she wasn't adjusting well to being temporarily disabled. I am falling apart and miserable. And she's all fucking better.
And if one more idiot in my family asks 'are you feeling better today' 'did you (symptom) go away?' I will scream or cry. Or just be silent and smile and say something polite without info dumping about how I actually am.... Bc that's rude.
Sorry huge rant..sleepless. angry. Felt tired enough for a min but I lost it again.
And I know many of you have it ten fold what I do and are wishing you were just this bad instead of where you are, and I'm sorry. And I feel for you immensely even thought I don't understand your pain.
Also why do I say less severe? Bc she can still sit upright for extended amounts of time with out getting dizzy or sick. She doesn't overwhelmed w nerve pain that sets of nausea and migraines when she stands too long. She can visit family more than me, and can drive.
I tried not to let her (and to break stuff into smaller groupings) but apparently she can lift more than me without ending up in bed for a day or few like I would. She sleeps at night (when her sciatica was bad, it was disturbed here and there. I could here when it was.) I hardly ever sleep bc PTSD and pain or god hates me or some such.

2023.06.02 17:42 thinkingstranger June 1, 2023
Late tonight the Senate passed H.R. 3746, the Fiscal Responsibility Act, suspending the debt ceiling and cutting certain federal spending. President Joe Biden has promised to sign it tomorrow, preventing a government default. Forty-four Democrats and two Independents—Angus King (I-ME) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ)—voted yes, along with 17 Republicans. Four Democrats and Independent Bernie Sanders (I-VT) voted no, along with 31 Republicans. The final tally to pass the measure was 63 to 36.
“Democrats are feeling very good tonight,” Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said. “We’ve saved the country from the scourge of default.”
Republicans brought the nation to the brink of default with their insistence that they opposed runaway government spending, but their demands did not square with that argument. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said that the $21 billion cut in funding to the Internal Revenue Service, for example, will result in $40 billion in lost revenue, increasing the deficit by $19 billion.
In other economic news, the Biden administration today announced actions designed to address racial bias in the valuation of homes.
This sounds sort of in the weeds for administration action, I know, but it is actually an important move for addressing the nation’s wealth inequality. In 2019 a study from the Federal Reserve showed that white American families had a median net worth of $188,100, Hispanic or Latino families had a net worth of $36,200, and Black American families had a median net worth of $24,100.
Homeownership is the most important factor in creating generational wealth—that is, wealth that passes from one generation to the next—both because homeownership essentially forces savings as people pay mortgages, and because homes tend to appreciate in value.
But a 2021 study by the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, more popularly known as Freddie Mac, showed that real estate appraisers are twice as likely to undervalue minority-owned property relative to contract price for which the home sells, than they are to undervalue homes owned by white Americans.
The story of lower valuation came to popular attention after a Black couple living near San Francisco applied for a loan and received an initial valuation far too low for them to qualify for that loan. Shocked, since the same house had been appraised at almost a half a million dollars higher the year before, the couple removed all traces of their ownership of the house and asked a white friend to stand in as the owner before a new appraiser evaluated the worth of the property. That new appraisal came back a half a million dollars higher than the lowball one.
(The couple sued, and the case was settled in February 2022).
Two years ago, the Biden administration announced a sweeping effort to “root out racial and ethnic bias in home evaluations.” Today it bolstered those efforts to “ensure that every American who buys a home has the same opportunities to build generational wealth through homeownership.” They call for fixing algorithms to ensure that home values are accurately assessed, creating pathways for consumers to challenge low assessments, and increasing the numbers of trained appraisers.
There is a reason that the administration has centered its housing policies on June 1. This is the anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre, when in 1921 white gangs destroyed the prosperous Greenwood district of that city, which was home to more than 10,000 Black Americans. It wiped out 35 blocks with more than 1,200 homes and businesses and took hundreds of Black lives, robbing Black families of generational wealth and the opportunities that come with it.
In 1921, Greenwood, known as “Black Wall Street,” was estimated to be the richest Black community in the United States. The destruction of May 31 to June 1, 1921, changed all that. Residents of Greenwood filed $1.8 million in damage claims—more than $27 million in today’s dollars—against the city, but all but one of the claims were denied when the city was found not liable for damages caused by mobs. (A white pawnshop owner was compensated for the guns stolen from his store.) Insurance didn’t help, either: insurance companies claimed that damage caused by “riots” was not covered by their policies.
In a 2018 article in the American Journal of Economics and Sociology
, Chris M. Messer, Thomas E. Shriver, and Alison E. Adams estimated that the destruction in Tulsa might well have amounted to more than $200 million in today’s dollars.
Greenwood’s Black residents nonetheless pooled their resources and rebuilt the district, despite the system of “redlining” by mortgage companies that deemed parts of Greenwood to be credit risks and made it impossible for residents to get mortgages. “Urban renewal” then destroyed the area again in the 1960s through the 1980s as white city planners rezoned the district, built highways through it, and took property through eminent domain.
Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged the destruction of Greenwood today in a call with reporters. Noting that “[h]omeownership is one of the single most powerful engines of wealth-building available to American families,” she explained that ‘[m]illions rely on the equity in their homes to put their children through college, to fund a startup, to retire with dignity, to create intergenerational prosperity and wealth.” But “for generations, many people of color have been prevented from taking full advantage of the benefits of homeownership.”
The inequalities of the past have persisted in the home appraisal system, Harris said. “[B]ecause their homes are undervalued, Black and Latino people often pay more for their mortgage, receive less when they sell, and are less able to get access to home equity lines of credit—all of which widens the racial wealth gap and deepens longstanding financial inequities.”
“Today,” her Twitter account said, “our Administration is announcing new actions to root out racial bias in home valuations to ensure that all hardworking families can realize the true value of their investment and have a fair shot at the American dream.”
Jonathan Lemire, Adam Cancryn, and Jennifer Haberkorn of Politico
reported today that White House officials urged allies to downplay their substantial victory on the debt ceiling crisis and the related budget negotiations, afraid of sparking Republican opposition and eager to be seen as the adults in the room.
But they needn’t have worried. Today, President Biden tripped over a sandbag left in his path as he was jogging away from the center stage of the U.S. Air Force Academy graduation in Colorado after giving the commencement address. He appeared fine after the fall, but it is dominating right-wing social media, the debt ceiling crisis already forgotten.

2023.06.02 17:41 Ordinary_Pain6716 I got called overqualified for a position during the interview, only for the recruiter to call me today and tell me they went with a more qualified person instead
I’m sorry for the rant, but I’ve literally reached my limit today….
As the title suggests, i had an interview for an Assistant Facilities Manager position with a well known brokerage firm in London.
I’ve been applying / interviewing for the last 3 months, in this time, I unfortunately passed the 500 jobs applications mark ages ago, and have had around 10 interviews (which is not bad) however i have always been informed that they went with a more senior option or my favourite one “a cheaper option”
I’ve been in the industry for over 5 years and have worked for some of the most prestigious companies out there and have a proven track record for all my achievements, that all seems to not matter at all.
Tuesday i’ve had an interview with a company i was really interested in, during the interview I constantly had the hiring manager tell me i might be over qualified for this position and i might get bored. At one point she asked why i’m not applying for a Facility Manager position instead of the Assistant manager position as i clearly have more than enough experience and am really confident in my abilities. I then explained to her that even tho, i do indeed have a lot of experience and am confident in my leadership abilities, i feel as i’m not at that level yet and i could benefit from a few more years under someone’s supervision whilst also offering the company my in-depth knowledge and skills accumulated over the years.
This all seemed to go well, until this morning.
The recruiter called me and explained that while the interviewer was impressed with my record, they choose to go with a more qualified person instead.
Has anyone ever experienced this? Did i do / say something wrong? I am literally dumbfounded at this and quite honestly speechless and demotivated…
Appreciate all help / roasting

2023.06.02 17:41 IntrovertMatt Calorie deficit, very little weight loss
Possibly a rookie question but everyone starts somewhere. I'm 29, 90kg, 5"9. I started the gym exactly 2 months today. My routine has been to go to the gym 4 times a week, each session including 45mins on the treadmil doing 13 incline, 3mph. Which usually comes up as around 600 calories burned according to the machine. 30mins doing a core kettlebell workout. 1 hour / 1 hour 1/2 doing weight training, push, pull, legs split. I also have a job where Im constantly walking through the day so I walk between 22000 to 28000 steps 4 times a week. I've been using an called called nutracheck to keep track of my nutrition, I haven't eaten over 2000 calories for the past 2 months. Generally around 1500-1700 most of the time but has never been over 2000. No cheat days. I've had around 140-150grams protein per day which was recommended when I first started which mainly consists of chicken, Greek yogurt or diet whey protein.
My main question is I've only lost 4lbs in those 2 months, in myself I feel like I've gained muscle very slightly but in a calorie deficit like that I figured I would've lost more weight than 4lbs in 2 months. Am I doing something wrong or am I gaining muscle at the same time as losing weight?

2023.06.02 17:41 GTAIVisbest Creating a dynamic line graph [ChatGPT stumped]
, I've been trying to create this dynamic line graph that uses a user-defined date range and looks in a headerless table, finds all instances within the date range, organizes them in order of dates, and then displays the results:
"On the sheet called "New Relationships", there is a table called "NewRelationships_TrackingTable". It is a HEADERLESS table, meaning it does not have any headers. However, I'd still like to use table column references in my graph instead of absolute static references. Just no header references
In NewRelationships_TrackingTable, there are two columns of note. The first column [Column1] is the name of the tracked entry. This is a dynamically expanding table, so there might be 5000 total entries, or there might be 5. In [Column1], the name of the tracked entry is placed. It can either be S10, S20, etc, but for now, I only want to focus on graphing one: S10.
The second column [Column2] is the DATE that the tracked item was tracked on. These dates might not be in order. The table is dynamic but it will not be automatically sorted by date, so you might have out-of-order dates there.
On a different sheet called "Metrics", there are two cells. Both have defined names linked to them, so there is no reason to use their absolute references. The cells are called "BeginningDateCell" and "EndDateCell" respectively. As their names suggest, they define a user-enterable date range for data analysis.
Underneath this, in the sheet "Metrics", I want to place the line graph. The graph should represent the amount of S10s tracked between the user-entered date range, in order of date.
The horizontal (x) axis of the graph should show the range of time (for example, if BeginningDateCell is 04/01/2023, and EndDateCell is 05/01/2023, then the X-axis of the graph would be one month, spaced out evenly.
The vertical (y) axis of the graph should show the number of S10 entries logged between that time period. For example, if on 04/01/2023, the total amount of S10s that were tracked with dates on or before then totaled 7, then the Y axis should start at 7. If by 05/01/2023, the total amount of S10s that were tracked with dates on or before then totaled 12, then the Y axis should finish at 12. The line graph should always either be a flat or an upwards projection, with the GOAL being to visualize the general progress of tracking throughout the dynamic date range. "
ChatGPT keeps giving me formulas using =FILTER() which does not exist in my Excel version, then an ArrayFormula which did not automatically "spill" downwards like it should have, and then more extremely dense formulas that always resolve to an error. I tried toying around with the graph maker, but I got nowhere.
As a last resort, I'm turning to y'all to see if anyone knows what formulas I'd need and where I would need to put them. I'm sure creating such a graph is *possible*, but I'm surprised it's so unintuitive.

2023.06.02 17:40 SkrOnTheRidge What’s going on with my lawn?
| || |
Bought house in 2021 builders had put down sod which was quite lush. Has been dropping off for the last two seasons in certain spots while others continue to thrive. Based on PictureThis results I believe the lawn is largely KBG but the thin spots in the pics are identifying as St Augustine (kinda surprising for Northeast?) Note: I do not have a dog or other pets. Zone 6A. Irrigation system doing deep watering every 3 days. How can I get this to fill back in? submitted by SkrOnTheRidge to lawncare [link] [comments]

2023.06.02 17:39 Own_Carpenter_6210 MY EXPERIENCE WITH GOD
this is going to be a long post. I have decided to jot this down at night, when I just experienced a miracle.
Growing up, my father wasn’t a very religious man and I being a papa’s girl influenced by him also had a phase where I didn’t believe in god. Recently however, due to certain instances in my life, that opinion has completely changed. honestly thebeerbisceps’s podcast channel did wonders for me and introduced me to a new side of religion. The only reason I didn’t believe in god and resented the idea was ONLY AND ONLY because of the man made religion aspects and how some people blindly followed the religion and spread hate . why this podcast was diffrent is because smart, accomplished people spoke about god with logic and also brought science into the picture, this is how I started. Soon, I started going to Mandirs, praying and it helped tremendously. I will now share a few instances which made me realise the power of god
1)I was in my car one day on a long long roadtrip,a party playlist was playing and loud party songs were playing(obviously). After some time, suddenly I started thinking about how I would be moving to a diffrent country for college soon and would have to leave all my family, my dog and my friends behind. This made me sad and tears fell from my eyes.AS SOON AS I STARTED CRYING, suddenly in the middle of the party playlist, hanuman chalisa started playing. That suprised me and low-key calmed me down. Weird but maybe the playlist accidenlty had hanuman chalisa or something. But then I had a thought, it would be crazy if I see a monkey while the Hanuman chalisa was going on. LO AND BEHOLD 15 seconds later I see a monkey( for refrence I was on a expressway in madhy pradesh and this road doesn’t have monkeys usually). This could all always be a coincidence for anyone else, but at that moment I had goosebumps.
I had several such moments while listening to the Hanuman chalisa, for eg. my parents would be fighting badly but as soon as I played hanuman chalisa they would suddenly make up and be very affectionate again. Also, whenever I had trouble sleeping, I would everyday listen to the mantra to fall asleep and it worked every time. Several such small things would happen.
2)I had the fear of dying earlier and would get very anxious whenever the thought popped in my head. Today, the thought came and I started panicking and having a anxiety attack. I tried googling what to do but nothing helped. then I went on Google and typed “Hindu god of courage”. Maa durga’s name came along with a mantra. I read the mantra and asked my dadi to read it again. ISTG I could feel a physical weight being lifted off my body and I felt better immediately and felt like I no longer fear it.
3) remeber how I mentioned my dad isn’t religious? I found out, when my mom was pregnant, he made a mannat that he wanted a girl. And he had so much faith in the mannat, that my name was decided before they found out if I was a boy or a girl.
If you made it to the end of the post, thank you for your time. Would love to hear your thoughts and OM NAMAH SHIVAAY

2023.06.02 17:38 Gurumarketer1 How I am maximizing my productivity and potential by 15x with Monk mode.
| || | submitted by Gurumarketer1 to u/Gurumarketer1 [link] [comments]
Hello this is Guru, I am a Marketing analyst and building my business www.passioncode.in
from scratch. As a 20 years old guy, I have to undergo a lot of mindset shifts and have to learn a lot to build my business. I am working a day job at an MNC so it is quite harder for me to be productive enough to scale my business in the evening due to many distractions. So I came up with Monk mode
as my solution and a strategy to reach my goals.
What is Monk Mode? Why I am doing it?
It is a period of immersion, in which you stay disciplined towards some goals you have fixed, the whole idea of this concept is committing yourself for some time to make the most use of it which maximizes the results
due to the compounding effect.
How long should monk mode last?
When you start as a beginner it is highly recommended to be in monk mode for 21 days.
21 days of Monk mode, full of discipline and
3 days of resting period, in which you can do whatever you want to enjoy your life, and again after that go back into monk mode with some extension to the previous count of days.
My plan is 21 days Monk mode > 3 days of rest > 26 days again > 3 days of rest >31 Days and so on ..... The more days you do it, the easier it gets.
I will do this repeatedly increasing the count of days but I won't stay in monk mode for more than 90 days.
It's a personal suggestion, but it's up to your own goals and priorities.
I feel It won't be a satisfying life if I go beyond 90 days into Monk mode.
How I plan before entering the 21days Monk mode!
There are two basic frameworks, I call them monk mode rules.
The Non-negotiables and The Variables Non-negotiables
are certain rules you will not break in the period of monk mode Variables
are certain tasks you are going to perform to bring the desired results faster.
Here is my list, https://preview.redd.it/57ijnrlmjm3b1.png?width=747&format=png&auto=webp&s=127f6e89b7f25fb5c33c9c07c48268b1bfd510f1
My Non-negotiables are no smoking, no drinking, no junk specifically no to anything that affects the function of your mind.
My variables are things that I need to perform daily for the next 21 days to bring a potential outcome out of it.
Create a table and assign a specific time of the day for each variable and perform it at the same time every day to create momentum.
That's it for today, I will blog about the monk mode reddit journey, stay tuned to see my results and how the monk mode changes my life!
Never underestimate yourself, Believe you can do anything!
Bye for now!
