The Seven Items Of A Teacher

2023.06.09 03:45 lin_seed The Seven Items Of A Teacher

Hey zen, it is good to be making OPs again, ngl.
And thank you very much for all the engagement on my last post. It felt very good to get some content up, and bring some conversation to the table after an extended absence. (Now hopefully Reddit can find some solution for this 3rd party app kerfuffle. I’m not sure I’m ready for tech platform Ragnarok just yet–when there’s so much zen to study these days!)
Anyway, in my previous post, I mentioned that I was splitting my look at the case (BCR 15) into two posts. I feel like it was worth doing in this case—partially because I often feel that we never look at the actual BCR in this forum, because it makes for such long OPs to try and grapple with Yuanwu's entire commentary. (And I do personally find Zen Master Yuanwu's commentary to be a key component of the book that Zen Master Yuanwu wrote for us, and am more than a little leary of the chopping-block treatment that it often receives in this forum.)
Anyway, this two part post is an attemp to address this issue. There were too many themes, or too much that was worth looking at, to fit it all in one post. "Why not just cut off at about the point where I used to fall asleep while reading BCR cases?" the thought suddenly occurred to me. "That would seem to make a lot of sense, if that's what my original reading experiences themselves were like!"
(Et voilá—the prototype BCR two-parter is born in a golden flash! ⚡️)
This way all of you who read the fist post have already had time to sleep on it–a mechanism and process I do not find at all trivial when it comes to reading and literary analysis.
Anyway, here is part II. I filmed a new video for it, in which I read and look at the central part of the commentary, the part that caught my.eye for this go around—but first, let's look at the text.
Oh wait, also—I have some potentially bad news. That moose and calf I ran into the other day and tood you about? My gardening teacher just told me that he heard a brown bear had taken a moose calf up on our hill somewhere. Likely hers, he thought. (She resides in and is very active in our corner of the neighborhood.) This is just awful to hear. (in more ways than one. Hearing a brown bear kill a moose calf is bar none the worst thing one can hear that I have ever heard. Seriously it is the worst thing you can hear.)
I hope it was a different moose. I just looked her in the eye like a week ago. It's natural...but it is very unpleasant to hear about moose calfs being taken and / or see the aftereffect (bereaved moose). It's pretty savage out here, sadly. I'm not sure if it was her, and I won't know until I get eyes on her again, but just a heads up that that particular moose, who was so instrumental to the video from last week and the experience I related, might have suffered something truly awful. Hopefully not. Hopefully I see her calf with her, and it turns out to be a misplaced rumor that's really about an entirely different moose. I'll be sure to let ya'll know when I find out.
(Sorry if that seemed discursive, but that moose did star in some Zen content and conversation in a way, and if she suffered a tragedy I felt it was worth sharing.)
Anyway, now to the text.
If you remember, we left off after the verse. Afterward, Yuanwu spends some time blowing hot air up Hsou Tou's skirt, and then has this to say about Yun Men:
If Yun Men were not someone whose whole capacity had penetrated through to liberation, how could he die with you and be born with you? Why can he do this? Because he is free from the many leaking points of gain and loss, of is and is not.
Ngl, being free from gain and loss sounds pretty nifty. I wonder if Yuanwu has more to say about these "leaking points"–if so, that seems like it could be pretty useful.
Thus Tung Shan said, “If you would judge whether one going beyond is genuine or false, there are three kinds of leakage: emotional leakage, leakage of views, and verbal leakage. If there is leakage of views, the intellect does not stir from its fixed position and falls into the poisonous sea. If feelings leak, knowing always turns towards and against, and one’s view is biased. Verbal leakage embodies the marvel but loses the fundamental; the intellect confuses beginning and end. You should know these three leaks for yourself.
These leakage points really caught my eye. I spent quite a bit of time contemplating them and looking at them myself and for them in myself. They make a lot of sense to me. Don't they make sense, though? I also find the term "leakage point" very useful, because it allows one to see these phenomena in a practical way, as something real and observable but also simple, grapple-able, addressable. Yuanwu? A fella that could write!
There are also three mysteries; the mystery within the essence, the mystery within the phrase, and the mystery within the mystery.b When the Ancients came into this realm, their whole capacity was fully used: if you happened to be born, they would be born together with you; if you happened to die, they would die with you. They stretched out their bodies in the tiger’s mouth; letting go their hands and feet, they would follow your lead for a thousand miles, for ten thousand miles. Why? You must go back with them to get this one realization before you’ll understand.
I like it that he mentions the mysteries, then doesn't try to explain them! More about the Ancients being "born with you and dying with you"—honestly I think this is a very interesting subject these days, and I'm already considering more content on the subject. Anyone else find this an interesting conversation? To me it seens to be highly relevant at the moment.
The image "stretching out in the tiger's mouth" is pretty cool, as is this description of just how far they will go for you. Makes "going back with them" sound supremely worth it, does it not?
And now for some fun literary content. I love it when Yuanwu does shit like this!
As for “Eighty-four thousand disciples of Buddha were not phoenix feathers,” this is the assembly of eighty-four thousand holy people on Vulture Peak of Spirit Mountain—they were not phoenix feathers.c The Southern History relates that in Sung times (420–479) there lived Hsieh Ch’ao-tsung (“surpassing his clan”), a man of Yang Hsia in Ch’en prefecture, the son of Hsieh Feng (“phoenix”). He had studied widely and his literary talent was superlative. At court there was no one to equal him; his contemporaries considered him unique. Since he was skilled in the written word, he served as permanent attendant at the capital. For the funeral ceremonies of the king’s mother Yinshu, Ch’ao-tsung composed a eulogy and presented it at court. Emperor Wu saw what he had written and praised him highly, saying, “Ch’ao-tsung does indeed have phoenix feathers!”
An old poem says,
Audiences over, the incense smoke fills his billowing sleeves;
In the perfection of a poem, the perfect jewel lies in the stroke of his brushtip.
If you want to know the excellence of the hereditary managers of Imperial decrees,
On the pond right now there’s a phoenix feather floating.
Translator's Note:
c Phoenix feather is a metaphor for someone of outstanding talent, and also for a worthy successor.
The Blue Cliff Record Thomas Cleary & J.C. Cleary
You know it's gonna be good when a Zen Master heads to vulture peak on spirit mountain. (Seriously. As a literati, my literary senses activate like the AI in Ironman's suit everytime Vulture Peak is mentioned!) I'm glad Cleary included the note about phoenix feathers...he transmits an awful lot of information to readers of the book, that's for sure. As the western economy continues to collapse, there will likely be millions and millions of more people who actually have the time to read again—and I certainly think Cleary is well positioned to get the Zen Masters into a lot of those eyes.
I’ve already released dozens of his books into the wild, but if I get the opportunity at some point I’d like to realize an operation to distribute them to all the small towns in Alaska. (Take that zenners—you have to spend decades arguing publicly on the internet to get Zen texts out there—while we slacker hermits can cover an entire state / century with a couple thousand bucks and one or two days on Amazon—now that is some efficiency!)
Oh gosh. Now here I am blowing hot air up a dead guy's skirt. How embarrassing. Thanks Yuanwu—apparently your literary fawning is transmissable through time and space!
That poem was something else, though. This line?
If you want to know the excellence of the hereditary managers of Imperial decrees,
Literally out of this world!
I cannot stress enough what a good poem this is. Seriously—Yuanwu is not a fucking joke. This was a masterful selection, in my opinion. I’m not sure how many zen readers are reading commentary like this, by the time they are this far into it—perhaps they are more focused on doctrine and ideas like many seem to be in zen posts and comments—but does anyone else receive the absolute literary flooring that is on offer here? Like a sword run straight down through the top of your head, piercing your right eye, and poking out beneath your jaw?
I guess what I’m saying is that, sometimes, it is hard to have the conversation with Yuanwu that I want to have with him as a Zen literati. (Oops…did that sproing a few sockets out there in readerland? “Zen literari”? “Literati who studies Zen” just sounds so clunky! Don’t panic—I won’t let it go to my head.) Thankfully, zen exists, which has provided me with a venue where I actually can have that conversation with Yuanwu, as easy as pie.
And this is one of those times I want to point at what a rich and detailed object Yuanwu has in fact handed us through the centuries, like a jade goldfish we can swallow, slip into our ear, entertain in our fishbowls—or even flush down our toilet! (For those of us lucky enough to have indoor plumbing, anyway. The fate of deep rural goldfish is a grimmer one, this hermit can personally assure you.)
But anyway, just look at that poem Yuanwu snuck us, zennists. A deft stroke. Highly enjoyable. Like a phoenix feather floating on a pond.
And gosh I just love that metaphor: the “phoenix feather” meaning a “successor”. Neat-O Mosquito! (Linseed: it’s mosquito season and I just got back from duck taping the holes in my windows!)
Okay, and so the end of Yuanwu’s commentary is just so gosh darned good that I wanted to read it to you myself. So the video part of the content starts here. The part that grabs me about this selection is the qualities and the description of the Teacher (based on seeing Yun Men in the case) that both Yuanwu and Cleary lay out for us together, hand in hand, right hear in this book. So that’s the bit to pay attention to—or at least it’s the bit that I was really paying attention to.
First, I do tell a story, one about two hermits, and how I learned I could pilfer from another hermit in my neighborhood using nothing but chopsticks. And not just run-of-the-mill theivery, either—a real heist! I was talkkng to Mr Algood about “pilferers who pilfer from pillferers who pilfer” the ofher day, and mentioned that it was “best hermit past time.” This is also the same truth that underlies most if not all literary work. Mr Algood said: “If you need it, it’s just trading,” which is certainly a valid take. My response, offered to him now, is: “And if they’re dead—that’s a waiver!”
So the little story I tell is a comment on Yuanwu / Hsou Tou, Thomas and JC Cleary—and even the practice of all of us here (or some of us) strudying Zen together in this literary medium otherwise known as “r zen”.
But then I get to the important stuff. The stuff I am interested in looking at. The Seven Items Of A Teacher.
The Tyrannosaur & The GOAT.
Ain't those seven items something, though? Don't they give us something to ponder?
Guess which of the seven is my favorite?
The freedom to appear and disappear.
Always has been.
Thanks for reading!
(And let’s hope that moose calf is okay.)

2023.06.09 03:40 BikerJedi The Origin of Video Games.

A yarn incoming, be warned. :) But I hope a fun one. I really hope you enjoy it, I love this story.
I'm 53, which means I was around when the internet became a thing. I was online before AOL was a company. That means although 53 isn't chronologically old, but it is old as fuck in terms of the Internet's lifespan.
So, when I was still in middle school, my friend Danny and I played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons. There were video games then on the Amigas and such that you could (if you had a lot of money) or the Atari systems if you didn't have enough money for a computer, but he and I envisioned MMO type play. Dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of users playing together at once. We didn't have the knowledge or skills to make it happen, maybe only a few people on Earth did back then. Back then it was games on huge floppy disks and talking to folks on BBS's.
Fast forward more than 20 years. Danny and I are both out of the Army, and we reunite with another high school friend, Richard. Our love of D&D in high school comes up, and Richard mentions that his brother runs a MUD. It seems his Dad had a T1 line dropped into his home and is running a private internet provider and hosting this MUD. I hadn't heard of a MUD.
MUD: Multi-User Dungeon. A 100% text based game for potentially hundreds of people at once. No graphics. Example:
You are in a room. In front of you is a pool of clear water. It seems to call you. To the left, you see an exit from this area, leading to an unknown fate.
At this point, you might type, "drink water" and get ambushed by a monster or "exit left" and something else scripted would happen. You can run entire dungeons that way, leveling up, collecting equipment and unlocking abilities. They all had different rules. Some only allowed you to kill monsters (PvE or Player vs Enemies) and others let you kill both (PvP or Player vs Players, which also includes enemies like monsters hostile.) The MUD that Richard's brother ran was the Wild Wild West - No rules at all besides not hacking the MUD itself. There were specific areas where you could not be killed, but almost anywhere else you could be.
When I made an account and logged in over my 56k dial up modem for the first time, it was amazing. There were safe areas inside the cities and where you couldn't be attacked. One step outside the city, and another player would kill you and loot your corpse before you could log back in. It was BRUTAL. If you couldn't read fast, you were dead. If you couldn't type AT LEAST 80 wpm and memorize a shit ton of keyboard shortcuts, you were dead. Players would kill you just for the joy of it, even if they didn't need your gear. Life was harsh.
I would get up in the morning, hit a couple of classes at the college, maybe play Magic the Gathering in the smoking lounge, do a few hours in the computer lab on internship, then head home to eat, chain smoke and fight. (I am so glad I gave up smokes - seriously. Fuck tobacco.)
The worst part was that on this particular MUD, there were clans. The largest and most powerful was The Toadies. They were a group of students at Georgia Technical University who where absolute fascist assholes as far as the MUD was concerned. Only a few other clans that existed since the MUD started were allowed to exist. Independent players were fair game, and new clans that formed were hunted and destroyed by The Toadies. They went so far as to not allow players weren't in The Toadies to kill certain bosses and get certain gear. They would hunt you, kill you, and loot that equipment from you if they learned you had it. And because they had been there forever and were so large, they could do it. A group of four or five of The Toadies would log in, hunt you down, and kill you in seconds.
One of the tactics they used: There was an Inn that was a safe area on the second floor, but if you went to ground level, the innkeeper would kill you. You had to type incredibly fast to get out of there safely, either going upstairs to the safe area or leaving that safe area to the safe outside though the dangerous open room. So The Toadies would wait until someone was lost. That person would broadcast something like "Hey, I need a teleport back to town." Then the Toadie would quickly run upstairs, teleport that person back to town, then wait. The person would read the room, see the exit down, then leave. They would get killed by the inkeeper if they didn't exit fast enough. The Toadie would run down, type "Loot all" and run back upstairs or out of the Inn.
Then one day, it all changed. I met Erabus when he joined the MUD.
Erabus was an older adult in college like I was. We had similar schedules. We partied up on the MUD together often. We both hated The Toadies. So we said, "Fuck it, we are making a new clan and fighting. These assholes don't get to make the rules" It also pissed us off that the admins (like Richard's brother) who ran it didn't care that a small group of players was fuckign with everyone else. He loved the chaos and drama.
Because we are poor white trash, we called our new clan The Dukes of Hazard and changed our flair. We quickly recruited 10-15 others to join us after we convinced them we had a plan, and set about leveling them up. The first few hours we hung around in the main area, people saw our flair and were talking about it. "OOOOOOoooohhhh - The Toadies are going to kill you." We gave no fucks. We were tired of being pushed around. We set about leveling up our new comrades and getting them equipment and spells to compete. Start by getting everyone the special falchion. Then the armor they need. Get that mage his staff. Oops - that staff is embargoed by The Toadies and they took it from my clan mate. Time to get him another one.
What resulted was four months of spectacular warfare. We grouped up during hours they weren't online and made runs to gear us up with the best weapons and armor. We stayed in safe areas when The Toadies were on. After a bit, we were leveled up and equipped enough we could fight quickly.
It started out by scouting. The really cool thing about this MUD was you could be logged in twice, so you could run two different characters. So imagine, I have two different text windows open and I'm switching back and forth between characters. We could find a Toadie out by themselves and jump them, loot the, then rush back to safe zones. We got the first four or so before we lost one. This tit for tat went on until we were strong enough to go 1v1. It became a months long hate fest.
One day I logged in and didn't see a Toadie on, so I took out my Mage and Ranger. My mage was the one who did the damage. My Ranger fought the enemies and kept the Mage save. While they were following each other, I get a message that a portal opens in front of me and steps out in front of me. (I don't remember his name.)
My heart rate spiked. The adrenaline that hit me was almost nauseating. I cast several spells in quick succession between switching back to my ranger and beating the shit out of him with my mace. Then I fucked up.
I didn't know it, but I had managed to beat this leader of The Toadies to about 10% health. He had done enough damage to my two characters that I panicked and noped out of there. So he survived that encounter, but we got him a few days later.
In the end, the Dukes of Hazard won. The Toadies either quit or mostly graduated GTU and gave up on the MUD after over a year of fighting. I lost a few, I won a few. By time I graduated and quit playing, I was typing over 100 words per minute just to stay alive. Lol. I can't type nearly that fast any more, but I still do a respectable amount.
That is how video games started. Reading INCREDIBLY fast and typing even faster to stay alive. Good times.

2023.06.09 02:39 Yeetusbeatmymeatus Tallstar was almost right

Spoilers for The New Prophecy, Onestar’s Confession and Winds of Change
Been listening to the audiobooks for the past month to reread the series and it feels as if every time they mention Mudclaw he is being unreasonable and aggressive:
-He turns away Bluestar from going to Highstones. (It’s because ThunderClan was sheltering Brokentail, but a reasonable warrior wouldn’t have tried to stop a CLAN LEADER.
He’s consistently shown to be belligerent to cats from other Clans. While this may be because of WindClan’s past suffering, the cats on the journey needed to be united so they could survive.
In Dawn, he is seen disobeying Crowpaw when he leads WindClan across the thunderpath before it’s safe and endangers Morningflower. Firestar is almost killed trying to save her. Reckless. He didn’t want to listen to Crowpaw even though he had experience crossing this particular thunderpath and he endangered his clan for a powertrip.
He wasn’t the right choice to lead at the lake because things were still getting established and he probably wouldn’t be as cooperative with the other leaders. Tallstar betrayed him with the deputy change but he believed that Mudclaw wasn’t the right leader for the time. He was xenophobic during the worst possible time: telling the WindClan cats to keep their distance from the other Clans in Winds of Change.
Would he have been an okay leader? Sure. He was a strong and loyal warrior with the respect of all his Clan but he was too abrasive to maintain relations with ThunderClan, and his behavior once they get to the lake makes him SEEM cold.
Onewhisker was supporting his leader until the very end: letting him lean on his flank essentially the whole time they traveled, making sure he was taken care of etc…
Whereas in Starlight when the cats first get to the lake, Mudclaw starts barking orders as if he was already leader. He rudely interrupted Firestar during the meeting and when Onewhisker tells him to show respect to Tallstar he coldly states that Tallstar won’t be leader for long. Onewhisker argues with Mudclaw and for once, Firestar doesn’t back him. Instead, he supports Mudclaw for fulfilling his duty as deputy. Onewhisker’s outburst was inappropriate, but Mudclaw’s response wasn’t very diplomatic and it made both of them look bad.
In Winds of Change he seems to be more concerned about Tallstar than he ever did in the books. I kind of take it as a retcon because he wasn’t written to be a protagonist in any capacity in the original story. The book is written from his point of view so we are supposed to root for him and understand why he feels the way he does. He eventually redeems himself in StarClan because he thought he was doing the right thing. Tallstar shouldn’t have appointed Onewhisker the way he did. ThunderClan cats and his own replacement being the only witnesses to this decision is super sus. No wonder Mudclaw felt it was wrong.
Onewhisker wasn’t the right choice either. His super edition is just retconned fanficish garbage and he makes a lot of poor choices as leader anyway. He pushes Firestar away even though Tallstar was hoping their friendship would prevail and WindClan would always have good relations with ThunderClan, who’s literally helped them during the darkest days in the forest.
Tallstar was old, and dying so he did the best he could. If Mudclaw had listened and just KEPT THE PEACE like Tallstar asked him to he probably would have kept his position.
Both of them suck. Ashfoot would have been a better leader than all of them imo

2023.06.09 01:32 TriTonyv7 Finishing the Adventure - Retribution Intro : Hard Truth

Previous
Far into the Trinity, a Mech was falling down towards a mystical place after being teleported. It was Terrence Suave that did have a bad time. After Professor Giro was defeated, Terrence tried a last-ditch attempt to kill Henry. Unfortunately for him, Henry and Bethany did got into their Super Form and they totally destroyed him. He later crashed into a place that was known as the Crystal Museum. The place where the Rainbow Tris originated. Terrence did got out of his now destroyed mech and was VERY pissed.
Terrence : AHHHH !!! I HATE THEM ! Why I didn’t see it before ?!? You know what ? I need to go with a plan B… But why this psychotic pilot is never there ?!
The ex-Leader looked around to see a Tri standing above the pillars. He was absolutely stunned by the brilliance of it so, he gave a closer look. Until he got interrupted by someone.
??? : Wait ! You think that you can took it easily ?
He turned back to see another member of the Trinity : Wateria. A forgotten friend of Alica that was send to the Crystal Museum to protect the Supreme Tri. Needless to say that she was prepared for intruders. Terrence stepped back, imploring the girl to not attack him.
Terrence : No please ! I’ve got here due to something unfortunate ! I was attacked by two persons : A Thief that was the leader of the Toppat Clan and a Little Angel. Their names was… Bethany and Henry. They used the Rainbow Tris to defeat me !
Wateria hesitated to spare Terrence due to his story. But she’s not an Echidna to be dumped like that.
Wateria : You know ? I’ll still eject you since you are not supposed to be here. But these names are not familiar. Anyway, GET OUT OF HERE !
She ejected the ex-leader with a baseball bat. And she looked on the memories of both Henry and Bethany. If for Henry, she cried a little bit based on what he has gone through. For Bethany… She was having a massive headache by looking into her memories.
Wateria : AH !!! What is… What is this ?!
She struggled even to stand up. After a while, it stopped. She was taking her breath again after the intense moment.
Wateria : By the light of Lumi… This is her memories ?! I hope that I still have Alica’s number…
She took her phone and luckily, Alica was still there. And the last contact was… 9 years ago… Yep, definitely forgotten. She tried to call her but her numerous attempts led into failure.
Wateria : I’m sure that she changed her number… Well… I need to leave. Even though it’s risky…
At the same moment, the Triple Threat was outside, doing a small camping to get a serious rest.
Charles : Hey. The hardest is behind us, right ?
Henry : I don’t think that… We do know now that we have the 13th Division. In top of the Insider Traitor.
Ellie : So… I fear that it would be worse that everything we have endured in the past. The Trinity, the fact that our world is fragmented into timelines and such is… Impossible to believe.
Henry : I know you don’t want to know it but it’s the truth… Amina even noticed that I was doing nightmares about it.
Amina : You are talking about this again ?
They looked her and she was with Bethany.
Henry : Hello, little gem. We did set up a camping because we are so tired…
Amina : It’s really nice. Anyway… You are not the only person that has constant nightmares. Bethany is seriously affected too…
Ellie : It’s every week ?
Bethany : It’s every night. Most of the time, it’s about my past runs.
Henry : Man… You are feeling tired by this ?
Bethany : Yeah… I don’t even know what to do… I can ask Tony to find a solution though…
Charles : Why not asking Isaac ? He’s quite the perfect guy to take care of you !
Bethany : Hehe… You know that I would be embarrassed if I do that.
Ellie : It happens to be shy, even if you confessed !
Amina : Yeah, don’t be like that, Bethy ! Ask him if you have the chance !
Bethany : I… I don’t even know what to say for your generosity…
??? : You don’t have to.
Everyone looked to see Tony coming with Rupert, Dave, Victoria and Sarah. Strangely, Tony was feeling… More sad. It would be logic if it was because of Alina but no, it’s something else.
Bethany : Tony ? It’s fine ?
Tony : Um… I need to talk with all of you. It’s important.
Victoria : Tony told us earlier about Galeforce. And… There’s good and bad news.
Charles : The General ? Tell the good news first !
Rupert : The good news was that Dmitri is not the responsible of his murder.
Henry : Really ? He didn’t have a grudge against him ?
Dave : According to our documents, no mention of the Wall is heard.
Ellie : Ah, it’s nice ! But… About the bad news ?
Tony : Oh that ? It’s about the real responsible of the murder… And…
He hesitated seriously and Charles was towards him, ready to hear it. After a long moment of silence, he revealed the truth.
Tony : It was me that killed him.
When Tony spelled these words, everyone stepped back in shock. For Charles, it was his entire world that crumbled down. He even punched the ground in anger. Everyone stayed silent for 2 minutes.
Tony : L-Listen, Charles… I can explain. First, try to pull yourself together...
Rupert : Tony told us it was because what the General said was… Very concerning.
None of the words seems to reach the Pilot. Victoria approached him to at least try to console him.
Victoria : Charlie…
But unfortunately, Charles violently pushed Victoria without warning and he picked a flaming stick as a weapon from the fire camp. Tony did stepped back.
Tony : C-Charles ?
Henry : Charles… Buddy… I-I’m sorry for you but calm down !
Suddenly, without a word, he punched his best friend and Henry got down. Amina even got towards Bethany to block her view.
Dave : Charles ! Stop ! It won’t change anything !
Dave did tried to contain him but of course Charles was clearly advantaged. He did rushed to Tony that did block his attack.
Tony : Charles ! What are you doing ?! Bethany and Victoria are watching !
And before Charles can beat Tony, Rupert with his rifle, knocking him out.
Rupert : You did know that it wasn’t a good idea to at least tell it.
Tony : I know… But I can’t keep this for myself. I had to tell it one day.
Henry : But why… Why you did killed him, Tony ? You hated him ?
The Guardian did a no with his head.
Victoria : We did see that Galeforce actually planned to fire all of you. And Tony tried hard to convince him to not do this but he didn’t want to hear him.
Ellie : But still, you didn’t have to…
Tony : …
After a long silence, Tony without a word, leaved the place. The others did see him and they did understand his reason but… Felt very terrible because Tony doesn’t kill without reason. Even if it was a good reason and that he wanted to protect Henry and his friends, Tony did it with regret.
Beth did catched up with up and grabbed his hand.
Bethany : Tony… I… I’m sorry for you…
Tony : Beth. I need to be alone. Please…
He then rejected violently her hand and left the place. The Virtuous looked at him in pure disappointment.
Bethany : Tony… Imagine if it was me… You would have killed me to protect them ? Or you would just leave the situation to them ?
He then stopped his walk… Trying to think for an answer…
Tony : Neither of them. You needed help and Death is not something that you deserve. Also… I’m proud of you.
And he leaved. The last quote that he said did warm her heart a little. It’s clear that she improved but it’s not enough.
Bethany : I will go forward, Tony… I will go forward...

2023.06.08 23:19 eyeb11 For the people who claim Moses wasn't a real person and Exodus never happened.

"In the times of the powerful pharaoh Amenemhat III (12th dynasty), a group of Asiatic people settled in the Delta, with centre in Tell el-Daba. For years, they used Canaanite ceramic and raised Asiatic long-haired sheep; so, it seems their economy was based on shepherding. Also, a good amount of weaponry has been found in their tombs.
Years later, pharaohs became weaker and weaker, so it is not farfetched to imagine that those pharaohs might get wary of those thriving and belligerent Asiatic people in the Delta. As a matter of fact, in that period, something rather shocking happened in the Delta. In those times, infant mortality was high: between 20% and 30% of burials were of children younger than 18 months; but in this period in particular, the amount of little boys dead rocketed to 65%. We don’t know the reason.
At the same time, the papyrus Brooklyn 35:1446 records a decree by pharaoh Sobekhotep III (13th dynasty) for a transfer of 95 slaves; half of them have Semite names (Menahem, Issachar, Asher, Shiphrah, etc.). In this period there was no military campaign in Canaan, so where did those Asiatic slaves came from? Also, the number of female slaves is much higher than male slaves, by 3 to 1. Would this have anything to do with the high number of little boys dead and buried in the area of the Delta?
At face value, all this seems to fit with the narrative in Genesis and Exodus:
In the times of a powerful pharaoh, Jacob’s clan (and their Asiatic sheep) moves from Canaan and settles in the Delta. A later pharaoh becomes paranoid and decides to enslave this Asiatic people and also to kill a good number of male babies. But, alas, most modern scholars place the Bible narrative over 200 years after the times of Amenemhat III or Sobekhotep III.
The last pharaoh of this 13th dynasty was likely Dedumes or Dudimose. I say likely, because this period is a bit chaotic and we know relatively little about it and about this pharaoh.
There is a stele by Dudimose that mentions the military official Khonsuemwaset, who was also his son. This stele is interesting for two reasons.
One, that, since Dudimose apparently died with no heir, his son must have died before him. And two, that the pharaoh’s son is depicted with gloves, an element that in Egypt was an indication that the person was the commander of the cavalry; this is evidence that there were horses and chariots in Egypt before the Hyksos. But, for some reason, its use didn’t become widespread until years later.
There is an Egyptian work of literature called Admonitions of Ipuwer that most historians date around this period. If so, it may indicate that, for some reason, the end of this dynasty sunk Egypt into chaos; the work mentions the Nile turning into blood, plagues, fire and ashes falling from the sky and destroying the earth, death, slaves running away, social disorder, poverty, famine and Asiatics invading and sacking.
This seems to fit with what Manetho wrote about certain pharaoh Tutimaeus in his book Aegyptiaca, frag. 42, 1.75-79.2:
“In his reign, for what cause I know not, a blast of God smote us; and unexpectedly, from the regions of the East, invaders of obscure race marched in confidence of victory against our land. By main force they easily overpowered the rulers of the land.”
Flavius Josephus’ quotation from his book Against Apion (Book 1, section 73) is very similar:
“Under a king of ours named Timaus (Tutimaeus) God became angry with us, I know not how, and there came, after a surprising manner, men of obscure birth from the east, and had the temerity to invade our country, and easily conquered it by force, as we did not do battle against them.”
It would be very tempting to connect all of this information to the narrative in the book of Exodus. After all, we have a pharaoh with chariots whose firstborn son dies before him, and after him the country is devastated and extremely weak: it receives a blast of God because God is angry at them, the Nile turned into blood and other similar images are mentioned, their slaves run away and the country is so impoverished and its army so weak that after their slaves left, an Asiatic people, the Hyksos, conquer Egypt easily, with no battle.
However, most scholars today place the narrative of the Exodus about 300 years later than this, in the times of Ramesses II. It almost sounds like circular reasoning: “If the exodus happened, it must have happened in the times of Ramesses II; but in the times of Ramesses II no exodus happened, so, the exodus never happened.”
There are more parallelisms. For example, few years after all these events, an army was besieging the city of Jericho when, suddenly an earthquake collapsed its walls, allowing this army to enter and burn the city. This fits perfectly with the Bible story, but, again, it happened about 300 years too early.
A few scholars (and not all of them believers) have suggested that perhaps we are looking for historical and archaeological evidence in the wrong period; so, they have proposed that we should revise our traditional chronology for ancient Egypt.
After doing that shift, the parallelisms between the Bible and historical and archaeological findings are striking to say the least.
I don’t mean that I believe in this proposal; I am not totally convinced, but I think it is a reasonable approach. And you don’t need to believe in God or in the divine inspiration of the Bible in order to accept the possibility that the Bible narratives are based on real events. I feel that this field of knowledge is too overloaded with personal passionate ideas that make it difficult to have a rational approach. And I think that when people say that there is no evidence whatsoever for the Bible narrative of the Exodus they are going too far.

2023.06.08 18:51 Spartawolf Galactic High (Chapter 73)

First/Previous
As the first rays of morning light peeked through the tattered blinds, Jack slowly opened his eyes, groaning slightly as he rolled out of bed on reflex and began his pushups. Lowering himself down and pressing himself up again like it was second nature to him, Jack slowly woke up and took stock. He felt a little more relaxed and well rested than normal, an unusual but welcome change from the nightmares and poor sleep he had gotten used to. But whether it was his time spent relaxing and watching films with the others the previous night or just sheer exhaustion finally catching up to him, he wasn't sure.
Regardless, Jack checked the time, the system of which Sephy had gone through with him a few times. Measurement systems were quite finicky here, but after just over a week of waking up in similar fashion Jack saw that the numbers looked similar to all the previous nights, and when he stopped a moment to listen, he couldn’t hear anybody else moving about. Even Dante was still asleep, and Jack was pleased to see that the ‘dog’ was breathing a bit better. Whatever Rayle had done seemed to work, though he’d still search for the nearest vet just in case Dante got this way again.
Tiptoeing across the room Jack quickly changed into some exercise clothes and grabbed his towel from where it was dumped on the floor from the previous day. This was a routine he had very rarely ever compromised on ever since he arrived in this realm, and like clockwork Jack tiptoed down the stairs and poured himself a drink of cold tea from the pot, downing it quickly before carefully opening the door to outside. Rayle was still asleep, resting their body on the natural ground to take advantage of their Druidic powers to slowly heal as they slept, but the two opossum-like Screediips, Thulu and Stega poked their heads out nervously to stare at Jack as he crept his way down the long-abandoned ancient road to the district wall. The only sounds were a few small birds fluttering well above him, and the soft thuds of his feet dragging themselves to the starting line.
Pulling out the display for his commlink was always a hassle for Jack ever time he tried, but he was getting better, correctly selecting the music app, clicking on the ‘workout’ tag and hitting ‘random’ with only a few errors or missclicks. As the heavy bass kicked in, beginning a strange combination of what sounding like a cross between death metal and yodelling, Jack started his warm up, his legs feeling stiff and barely functional until he got into a rhythm and soon began running without a problem.
It was about an hour before Jack wound down, seeing that Rayle had gotten up from their spot and left the back door open. So, finishing his workout he lightly jogged over, slipping through and seeing Nika awkwardly make another pot of tea.
“Wish I could have joined you.” The Kizun sighed. “Still sore but at least I’ll be able to come to school with you guys, no way am I gonna risk getting in detention, so it looks like I’m gonna try and tough it out.”
“Hey, you shouldn’t feel pressured to go if you’re hurt!” Jack cautioned. “We know a bunch of people that definitely won’t be able to come in, surely they won’t hand out detentions after a crisis?”
“They have before.” Rayle shook their head as they handed Jack a mug of water, which he downed greedily. “Glad I woke up in time, if it wasn’t for that Lifestone of yours I would probably still be in a coma.”
“Yeah about that.” that reminded Jack. “How are you holding up Rayle?”
“Much better!” The Squa’Kaar smiled nervously. “My connection to the earth is much stronger here, so I’ll be fine! I feel bad for those that lack the ability though…”
“Yeah, if it’s all the same with you Rayle I prefer sleeping in my room instead of freezing my ass outside.” Nika snorted.
“We always have the Lesser Lifestone?” Jack questioned. “Are you able to use that and get better?”
“You have a point.” Nika smiled. “But I’ll wait for the others to get up first, they probably need it more.”
“Doubt it.” Jack shrugged, “You’re hurt the most, you might as well get patched up otherwise you’re gonna have me worried all day.”
“Alright.” Nika smiled unsurely. “I’ll talk to Alora, you go have a shower before you stink up the place!”
“Heh, alright.” Jack sighed as he quickly made his way upstairs.
Once he left, Nika immediately reached into one of her pockets, frantically pulling out her bottle of pills. Quickly taking one, she gave the bottle a shake and sighed when she realised she was getting low. She had been taking pills to throw off her heat cycle more regularly now Jack was living with them, and times like these when he was either helping her with something or just straight up worried about her really set her off.
“You should stop fighting it.” Rayle pointed out from where she was curled up on the sofa sipping her tea, still wrapped up in the blanket they had taken outside while Nika gave her a look. “It’s not healthy to fight against an important aspect of your nature, why not just give in to it?”
“No.” Nika sighed before elaborating. “I mean, yeah I’ve thought about it but I honestly don’t think I’m anywhere near ready for that kind of stuff yet and I don’t think Jack is either. Besides, it’s not debilitating and the pills usually last a while. It’s just one of those things I’ll need to get used to.”
“Will it have any long-term effects?” the Druid asked curiously.
“Um…I don’t think so.” Nika shrugged. “My people have been using these since before our recorded history, ever since we no longer needed to rapidly spread, and there doesn’t seem to be any kind of built-up resistance over the generations. Buying these is the real problem though. My people are quite spread out amongst known and probably unknown space too, but finding a regular supplier can be a real pain sometimes even on the Ring. I’ll be alright. I usually am...”
*****
Jack’s body was still glistening with sweat from his run as he entered the bathroom and locked the door. Quickly shucking his clothes off and turning on the water, he waited for it to warm up a little bit before stepping in. As the hot water cascaded down his body he let out a sigh of relief as he washed away the grime, before leaning back against the cubicle wall and allowing a moment of relaxation before he knew he would have to walk into whatever shitshow awaited the group today.
He was brought back from his thoughts when the shower made a slight stuttering sound, prompting him to quickly turn it off and wrap a towel around him. Walking over to the sink and looking into the old, cracked mirror, he inspected the telltale signs of hair growing above his top lip. He hadn’t really been taught to shave before his arrival, because he hadn’t needed to learn yet, but Jack didn’t really like the idea of starting to grow a moustache or a beard at his age. Reaching into the bag he brought in with him he pulled out a knife he had been using for this purpose for the last week or so, which he kept reasonably sharpened. Though he didn’t know if there was any shaving cream or anything sold that could help protect his skin and make the process a little quicker and less stress-free, he still proceeded regardless, carefully running the blade up and down…
He quickly looked around as without warning, the door opened to reveal Vanya, who looked at him in a panic as he nicked his skin with the blade.
“No!” She yelled as she rushed over to him. “What are you doing!”
“Woah wait! Vanya! Calm down!” Jack tried to wave her off in confusion as she grabbed the arm holding the knife, allowing her to take it from him as he just stood there baffled, as she cast a quick healing spell on him.
Wait? Did she think he was…
“Hey.” Jack calmly put his hands on Vanya’s trembling arms. “That wasn’t what you thought it was, I’m not checking out just yet.”
‘At least never like that, since I’m a fucking coward…’ Jack thought to himself. “You okay Vanya?”
“Um…I’m sorry, I…” Vanya began, and had to take a few moments to calm herself down, breathing deeply in and out as a coping mechanism. “I’m sorry Jack.” She started again. “In the moment I didn’t know what you were doing and I thought the worst.”
“Nah, it’s fine.” Jack tried to give her a reassuring smile, knowing that he must have inadvertently triggered something in the rabbit-like girl. “I was just doing guy stuff, didn’t mean to spook you. How did you even get in if I locked the door?”
“I don’t know, I just turned it as normal and it opened, it might be broken.” She motioned to the long-cracked mirror. “Just like a bunch of other things, you guys mentioned you needed to do some home repairs.”
“Yeah.” Jack sighed, though realistically he didn’t feel bad about it. It was something more normal that he had an aptitude for, as he often helped his father and his brothers around the house with chores on the weekends. “Something might be off with the plumbing or something too, the shower was sputtering a bit towards the end but I wasn’t actually using it for that long.”
“Yeah I think Alora mentioned having the occasional utility problems when guests are over, I’m guessing it might be more problematic now there’s more people living here for the foreseeable future.” Vanya sighed. “I hope there’s enough for me.”
“There should be. If not then maybe Zayle can help with their water spirit?” Jack grinned, before suddenly realising something. “Um…mind getting off me and letting me get changed first?”
“Oh! Sorry!” Vanya panicked as she quickly moved back, freeing the towel around Jack’s waist to fall to the ground…
“Oh…” The Chuna just about got out with wide eyes, before Jack took the initiative and gently manhandled her out of the room, shutting the door behind him.
Quickly finishing his shave and getting dressed Jack waved the embarrassed Vanya in, who had pulled out her small handbag, somehow managing to yank out a fully folded school uniform for the day. Jack guessed it was something similar to the extra-dimensional wicker basket the Squa’Kaar twins had used to store most of their belongings. Heading downstairs, Jack was happy to see that the rest of the household was awake in various states of lucidity. Nika was wide awake and eating breakfast with Alora, who was a little tired but otherwise coping. Chiyo and the Squa’Kaar were sitting on the sofa catching the headlines while Sephy was still looking tired browsing her commlink.
“You’ve got some more bounties on you Jack.” Sephy cautioned. “But nowhere near as bad as last week, probably not gonna be a problem.”
“Who has he pissed off now?” Nika asked curiously.
“Actually it’s all of us.” Sephy shrugged. “Apparently the Ogar clan the Laird belonged to seeks a Weregild for his death. They either weren’t able to put up much or just don’t give a shit and put up a token amount that satisfies their tradition. We’ve also got some anonymous accounts freshly made that are bumping Jack up again…”
“Malakiel?” Jack asked, worried.
“Nah. It’s gotta be related to the Klowns. They’ve tagged a bunch of people, all prominent people that are publicly known to have had a hand in fighting off the Klowns. You, Luvia, Svaarti, Devil’s Daughter, and everyone’s favourite asshole Svaartal are up there, but the amounts are spread fairly evenly. Oh hey! Mr Sparrel’s here too! And holy crap, so is Master Kull!”
“How are the Klowns able to post bounties?” Zayle asked in confusion as their earth spirit lumbered over and brought over a tray of tea.
“Because it isn’t them themselves actually doing it.” Nika pointed out. “It’s all the crazies actually backing them on the datanet that want to see everything burn. The damn simps!”
The Cult of Jingubash is likely involved too. Chiyo added. They are known to exist but they’re treated the same as the Cult of the Destroyer. The Klowns are their public force, but there are many worshippers that hide in the shadows and keep their allegiances well hidden. They’re not believed to be organised in the way cultists of the Destroyer usually are, but they’re still very dangerous.
“Good to know.” Jack shrugged. “At least I’m one of many, any bounty hunters I should know about?”
“Nope.” Sephy smiled. “You’re all clear on the public list, but that doesn’t mean hunters aren’t coming after you, or they just haven't announced it publicly yet.”
“Yeah, when you’re known to have done a public service for the city, people tend to frown on those that want to mess with you.” Nika grinned as the conversation ended, with Jack quickly accepting the breakfast Zayle made for him as he watched the news, with Rayle occasionally skipping the more boring stories.
“...dire news as people are still being recovered from this scene of devastation…”
“..The CEO of Corvin Enterprises has threatened to hunt down and expel all ‘peasants’ from the newly annexed district…”
“It is currently unknown what occurred at the Pallid Pit, however Drow involvement in cleansing it is speculated to be the likely cause…”
“Red Legion forces have been pushed back from the Taurin Sector, causing many to wonder - Is the Red Legion on the brink of defeat?”
“....it is unknown if this is a possible sign of a new Nascent Demon Lord awakening on Hive Station Bastilla, but local factions are investigating….”
“Local rangers have confirmed a mass-migration of many Zorn tribes heading westward into the unexplored wilderness. The reason for this is unknown…”
“We have Breaking News!” A cheery avian female suddenly popped up on the screen. She was in a large hall amidst a crowd of journalists with a podium and lectern combo at the end. “I am reporting live from Cocaine Keep, where local warlord Commander Cocaine has called a press conference in light of the apparent death of Devil’s Daughter…oh! Looks like he’s about to speak!”
The camera zoomed in on a large biped walking to the podium. With greenish grey skin and several bone plates protecting their maw, the mean-looking, aquatic-looking warrior was wearing a full set of lithe combat armour that hugged his large frame, with an oversized pair of goggles and a plain white bandana.
“Ooooh yeah!” The warrior roared intensely, shutting up the crowd instantly as he posed with bulging muscles for the cameras as his voice echoed throughout the hall. “I’ve heard the news, yeah! I’ve seen the Klowns, yeah! I’ve smelled the chaos, yeah! And I sense the cries of the people for a hero, yeah! SO COMMANDER COCAINE WILL ANSWER! OOOOH YEAH!”
In the views of the cameras, Jack could see the front rows of journalists start to back away, almost as if they were afraid of the volatile warlord doing something crazy.
Jack couldn’t blame them.
“Yeah! I know you’re all feeling scared and alone out there, yeah! I know things are bad, yeah!” The lunatic continued, with energetic motions towards the stunned crowd. “But let me tell you people something. Commander Cocaine may not be the biggest or strongest there is, but I’ve got heart! I’ve got spirit! And I’ve got lots of cocaine! Ooooh yeah!”
He made several poses with his muscles bulging beneath his armour before he concluded his speech.
”You know who I am, but just in case you don’t, I am Commander Cocaine, and I am the hero this city needs! Anyone with an active bounty better watch out, because Commander Cocaine is coming! OOOOH YEAH!”
With that he strutted off as several reporters from the front row tried to ask him some questions.
“Well, we just heard from Commander Cocaine, who has just sworn to be the hero this city needs!” The reporter started after regaining their composure. “If you want to aid him, you can join the Cocaine Crusaders at the following…”
That’s enough crazy for me right now. Chiyo interrupted as she used her powers to call the remote to her and changed the channel.
“Heh, check this out!” Sephy suddenly cackled. “Svaartal’s got a fat bounty on him, probably from fans of Devil’s Daughter!”
“I hope Devil’s Daughter is okay…” Alora spoke up sadly, causing Sephy to calm down. “We may be partially responsible for what happened…”
“No, Devil’s Daughter made her choice using the information we gave her, we couldn’t have predicted what she would do with it.” Nika reasoned. “And we’re totally going for that bounty, right? We still owe Svaartal a receipt for coming after Jack last week, it’ll be the perfect time to get him if we all work together to take him down.”
“You forget that he’s aligned himself with a powerful Drow House!” Alora chided her. “Who we really want to shake off! As good as we are, we cannot stand against them if we give them greater cause to seek our destruction!”
“They came for us already!” Sephy pointed out. “How could it be worse? Besides, we can take them!”
“It could be a lot worse!” Alora cautioned. “And not only are the Drow Nobles powerful individually, they have a powerful force backing them. There’s a reason why they are a major faction here! You’d risk putting all of us in massive danger!”
“Svaartal has to separate from them at some point.” Nika reasoned. “What do you think Jack?”
“I don’t want to go after him.” Jack immediately replied, truthfully. “But if he gives me a good reason to, I'll face him again. However, if he leaves us alone, we can leave him alone.”
“Well, that’s decided.” Alora sighed in relief. “We haven’t got too much time before we need to go, so let’s all hurry up and get ready!”
As they all hustled and did what they needed to do, Nika sat down on the sofa already ready, unhappy with the decision on Svaartal. He was a dangerous threat to the group, and after his ambush on them she knew he had to be taken out before he had a chance to come for them again. She had tried to take him out during the Klown attack when everyone else was safe and nobody was looking, without success. But here, there was an opportunity to take him out for good without getting their own hands dirty.
Logging in to one of her proxy accounts, Nika bumped up Svaartal’s bounty some more, making it that much more lucrative….
‘Shouldn’t have tried to kill Jack, asshole.’ She thought to herself with a sly smile.
*****
The queues to the school entrance checkpoints were shorter than usual due to the Klown attack, but not depressingly so. Several of the students were talking to each other while they waited in line as they looked up and down the rows in hopes of seeing their friends. To Jack’s mind, many seemed relieved that there weren’t as many victims as they had expected, and the realisation that he played a major part in saving a lot of his fellow students around him during the attack gave him a warm feeling in the back of his mind.
Unfortunately, said good thoughts evaporated when they got closer to the prefects.
“Halt!” One of the Korrigan prefects ordered the group as they approached. “Due to increased security measures you will submit to a full pat down. Failure to comply will result in your immediate termination.”
“Heh, as if they could take us.” Sephy grinned to the others as she was surprisingly the first to volunteer, though Jack had no doubt the sneaky Skritta had ways of hiding what she didn’t want to be seen.
“You two, come this way.” The head prefect observing their queue told Jack and Alora as they moved separately to be searched.
“What have you got hidden here?” the Prefect narrowed his eyes at Jack as they neared the end of their check. It had been quite thorough but he hadn’t given the Prefects a hard time because of it. He could understand the need for additional security in light of the Klown attack, but he wished they weren’t so heavy handed…
“Those are my balls.” Jack squirmed away. “Handle with care, or preferably not at all!”
“Yeah only we get to do that!” Sephy grinned as Jack sputtered in shock.
“You may go.” The Prefect told him. “Actually…wait a moment.”
“Is there a problem?” Jack asked warily, not wanting to be given any grief by these guys.
“I…” the grey-skinned Prefect began before they found their words. “I want to thank you and your friends for what you did at the party, many of my friends and colleagues are still alive because of you.”
“I…that’s alright, I just did what I could to help.” Jack replied, abruptly taken aback by the words. As bad as the Prefects could be, they were still people.
As the rest of the group made it past the checkpoint to head to the lifts, Jack groaned internally as he saw several drow waiting for them up ahead. If looks alone could kill, Izadora was certainly trying as she snarled at the human, who grinned defiantly in return while wearing the shades he had picked up from one of the two Drow Nobles that had attacked him during their raid on the Pallid Pit. The two brothers, Soren and Kravel, were nearby dealing with the checkpoint, but Jack could see they had clocked their group’s arrival.
The huge drow was there too, close to Izadora, and casually leaning against the entry staircase looking bored. Another smaller drow was there who he didn’t immediately recognise, wasn’t she with Soren when the drow came to pick up Svaarti? She certainly stood out from the crowd; despite the slim, athletic build similar to most of the other Drow, Jack could see several school uniform violations, with the thin, high collared black leather-like jacket, with interwoven silvery circuitry that appeared functional being the most blatant, and several dyed strands of light purple amongst her naturally white long hair.
And finally, Svaartal himself. Standing at attention, he was leaning on the staff of Devil’s Daughter, and staring right at him.
“Someone’s chasing clout with that staff.” Nika growled, keeping her hands ready to draw weapons, ignoring the pain of movement as she put on an air of confidence.
“Let’s try not to escalate this if we can.” Alora cautioned.
“You.” Izadora growled under her breath, and the Eladrie sighed resignedly.
“Hey there!” Jack grinned widely, as he gave the Drow Matriarch a friendly wave while many students stopped to watch the exchange, knowing what had happened the last time. “How was your weekend?” He mocked, though he kept up the friendly facade.
“Better than yours I suspect.” She snarled back. “I’m surprised you’re alive, Outsider.”
“Wait, what?” The unknown Drow with them perked up, looking baffled, turning around to stare at Izadora, as Jack saw the traces of several neon circuitry designs peek up from the collar of her school uniform. “This is the guy that kicked your ass and got you all worked up, sister? He doesn’t look so tough to me! My mech could totally wreck him, shame the High Matriarch said no!”
Jack didn’t think the foul expression of Izadora couldn’t get worse, but he was almost amused to see that he was quite wrong. Both Svaartal and the huge drow covered their smirks as the Matriarch rounded on who was apparently her sister, even as the unusual Drow waltzed closer to Jack, peering at him with a curious expression. Nika immediately had her shotgun levelled at their head as Chiyo drew in her power, ready to lash out.
“What?” The strange drow rolled her eyes at the girls as she stopped. “I haven’t even done anything yet!”
“Dextra.” Izadora snapped with gritted teeth. “Satisfy your foolish curiosity another time.”
“You talk too much for a humiliated Matriarch trying to save face.” Sephy chipped in with her ricocheting plasma pistols pointed at the ground, though Jack knew from the angle that she had subtly taken aim at Izadora. “Jack kicked your ass right here, and we took out your special forces at the Pallid Pit!”
“I will make you…” Izadora snarled, before they were interrupted by a familiar, cool voice.
“Izadora, what is the reason you are accosting this group of students?” Rena called out, as she approached the crowd, and Jack was surprised and glad to see Nya trailing gingerly behind her, staring at Svaartal’s newly acquired staff. “It appears that you are holding up the flow of traffic.”
“I am simply ensuring that they know the rules, Rena.” Izadora dismissed. “I-”
“I doubt it.” Rena snapped, unamused. “Your duties are done here, I have been instructed to tell you to report to Mr Zhiel’s office immediately before class.”
Izadora grumbled but ultimately complied, while Svaartal and Dextra slinked away. Only the large one remained behind, looking at Rena almost amusedly as she gave orders to the students to disperse, before he finally turned lazily and slunk up the stairs, but not before subtly looking at Jack for just a tiny moment with a thin smirk.
“I would suggest you all go to your form classes, as there have been several changes in light of the Killer Klown’s attack. I will however address you about this incident later.” Rena sternly told their group, as Alora gently pulled Jack away, quietly pleading with him not to start any trouble, despite the human’s wish to chase after and attack Izadora again, and to give Rena some backtalk.
“Jack, did you really have to wear those shades you looted from the Mal’Kar’s around their surviving family?” The Eladrie sighed disapprovingly as they left the area.
“Yep!” He grinned as they made their way to the lifts.
“Totally worth it…”

2023.06.08 14:46 Jed08 [spoilers all] Can we have more boss-like battles in DA:D ?

One thing I think died down a little through the course of the saga, is how many fight against enemies that could qualify as a boss you can have in a game, and how memorable these fights can be.
In DA:O, I felt that after each main quest there was a final fight against a non common enemy (at least at the time) that you needed to have in order to complete the mission. The Ogre in Ostagar, the Broodmother in Orzammar, the Werewolf/clan leader in the forest, the sloth demon abomination in the Circle, the Desire Demon in Connor's head, even Loghain toward the end of the game... And I am sure I am forgetting others.
But in DA2, I felt the number of such encounters decreased. We had the Arishok, the end of games bosses, the demon possession the Dalish clan leader, the mage that killed our mother, and some big monster in caves.
And I feel DA:I is really the game with the less "boss-like" battles. We have the Demon of Envy and Alexius when we had to choose between helping Templars or helping Mages. We have the battle in the Fade against a Demon after attacking the Grey Wardens, the Samson/Calpernia fight, Lord Seeker Lucius and the Avvar chief in the Fallow Mire, but considering the size of the game, I think the number is quite low.
I know we have a several fights against Dragons that could count technically as Boss fight. However, nothing really leads you to these fight. It is almost like a random encounter with a huge and powerful foe.
I just hope we have more quests in DA:D that leads you to a boss-like fight.
