My First D&D Memory
2023.03.25 09:35 Food-Poisoning My First D&D Memory
For the purposes of this story, I will be, for the most part, referring to people by the class they are playing.
Hello everyone! This is my first time posting here after being drawn here by , so apologies in advance if there's any poor writing.
I am relatively new to D&D still. I had always been interested in playing, but I never really had anyone to play with and did not want to join a random group. To scratch my itch, I watched campaigns on YouTube/Twitch. Namely the One Piece D&D run by Rustage. Due to that, I became very familiar with the mechanics of D&D but had never actually played in a real game.
However, recently an online friend of mine started to set up a campaign for our group. The primary purpose of this was as a sort of Trainer Campaign to help familiarize new players. Pretty much everyone in this game I already knew.
For obvious reasons, we all start the campaign at level 1 (except for one player, but we'll get to that). The first session was pretty basic. Fought a couple rats, nearly get knocked comically unconscious by them, it was fun!
The group was small at the time as not everyone who wanted to play was ready. So for session one the players were:
DM: DM My Friend: playing an Elf Paladin (who I will be referring to as Paladin) DM's gf: playing an Aasimar Sorcerer (Sorcerer) DM's Sister: the only person in the vc I actually hadn't met yet. They were a more seasoned D&D player, so they were starting the game at level 3 to essentially be a Co-DM. She was playing a Warlock. (Warlock)
And finally Me: playing a Warforged Cleric.
Now that the general context is out of the way, we can move to where the story really begins.
Session 2: At the time I'm writing this, this session happened only a few hours ago. I just can't stop thinking about what happened.
Unfortunately, Paladin couldn't make it to this game, but we actually got 3 more players to join us for this session.
Another friend: playing a Human Ranger A friend of Sorcerer: playing a Kobold Hexblade Warlock (calling him Hexblade) And A third friend of all of us: Playing a Custom Lineage, Half-Tiefling Barbarian named Gaston (this is important).
We're all part of an adventurers guild based out of the city we are all in. The session began with the guild master "assigning more newbies" for Warlock to mentor. Intro Gaston, Ranger, and Hexblade. We then received a quest to go check out a request to take care of a disturbance for a farmer and his wife caused by the local wildlife in a nearby town.
Upon the start of our trek there, Hexblade, like the little gremlin kobold that he is, says, "I want to climb onto the shoulder of the tallest member of the party." Who just so happened to be me and my 6'4 warforged.
To that I just thought to myself, "screw it, this'll be interesting." We arrive at the barn and the first thing everyone notices are the 7ft tall cobblestone walls surrounding most of the property, save for a few exits/entrances and gates here and there.
The walls turn the property into essentially two squares one of which is only accessible through a gate connecting the two areas.
The area is pretty trashed, and after a few perception checks, Warlock, Hexblade (still on my shoulder), and I all round a corner to see a bear just across the way from us.
Roll Initiative. (The order doesn't matter too much but the most important thing to note is that Hexblade is first and I am dead last)
Hexblade springs off my shoulder and engages with the first bear. We all gang up on it and it falls pretty easily.
Certain that it likely wasn't the only one, on my turn I scoop up Hexblade as I walk past him and we head just outside the wall through a secondary exit onto the fields. Immediately spotting another bear.
Meanwhile, Warlock went through the gate into the second area and also discovers a bear. Ranger had also snuck into that area and was now on an 8ft high platform so that she could see both Warlock and Hexblade and I.
Soon after Gaston and Sorcerer have joined us in the fields and we dispatch the second bear swiftly. Warlock then calls out for a bit of help as, even at level 3, she's having a bit of trouble soloing a bear. Socerer, who was closest to the entrance dashes to Warlock's aid but then:
Now the real fun begins. A fourth, significantly larger bear emerges from within the larger storage house.
Hearing all the commotion and too far away to get to and through the gate in a turn, I get a brilliant idea. A spark of genius, or one of stupidity.
Throw the kobold.
I turn to Hexblade and say, "you gotta trust me. Roll yourself as tightly as you can into a ball."
While Hexblade's player was absolutely on board with this, he figured his character would need to be persuaded. But after a successful persuasion check, it was time. I grabbed my little gremlin Kobold ball, rolled my athletics, 16+4. Hexblade soars over the wall and rolls for his Dex save to land.
Natural. 20.
He flies about as beautifully as a kobold can and lands right next to Ranger. Then, because Hexblade was right after me, he got to immediately throw a dagger at the now final big bear. Satisfied that we pulled off what I thought would be the highlight of the night, I prepared myself to make the long trek around.
But oh boy was I wrong. Not even 10 minutes later, Gaston flies into rage and decides that he is getting to the other yard, and he tries to crash through the cobble wall. With rage granting advantage on his strength checks, Gaston rolls.
Natural. 20.
Gaston absolutely catapults through the wall like The Koolaid Man or the Armored Titan. With his attack, Gaston pulled the attention of the bear off of Hexblade and Ranger as well as made an easy way for myself to join the fight as well. With its attention turned, Hexblade JUMPS ONTO ITS BACK and starts attacking with his axe. Warlock and Sorcerer blast spells, and I heal Gaston (he got knocked unconscious almost immediately after by the bear lmao).
The bear is looking weak and again Gaston, fresh off the ground, gets ANOTHER natural 20 for his javelin throw. This kills the bear and ends the combat.
Wow, this ended up being longer than I expected. I hope you all enjoyed! While definitely not the most crazy of stories I've seen or read, this was my first D&D event that I know I will remember for quite awhile.
Thank you all for reading!

2023.03.25 09:23 teller_of_tall_tales the helpers.
Lorak D'narvoc wandered out of his room and towards the warm light of his grandfather's study. His father and brother were on the other side of the planet fight the Tyranian invasion, leaving him in the care of his grandparents. He'd had a nightmare that the Tyranian's had captured them and were slowly killing his father and brother.
The terrified child slowly crawled into his grandfather's lap, the older avian letting out a soft chuckle at his grandchild's antics.
"Another nightmare kiddo?"
Lorak nodded as he hugged his grandfather's waist. His grandpa always made him feel safe when his world felt like it was falling apart.
Lorak's grandfather nodded sympathetically and held the boy close gently rocking him back and forth. Patting Lorak's back he shifted in his chair and asked.
"What's got you so worked up my boy? Did you have the nightmare again?"
Lorak simply nodded again, still clutching his grandfather tightly. He was too scared to speak and wanted his father and brother back home.
Lorak's grandpa felt a tug in his heart and sighed softly, looking back on his life both in the military and beyond.
"Lorak, do you remember when the Tyranian's attacked radilon?"
Lorak nodded quietly before looking up at his grandfather.
"They gassed the world capital, the broadcasts said that millions died."
Lorak's grandfather nodded sagely before setting his grandson on his knee.
"Do you also remember what the survivors of that attack reported when they got home?"
Lorak shook his head softly. He'd been too scared to watch the broadcast any longer. His grandfather crinkled his eyes in the comforting way only a grandfather could.
"All across the city, people helped each other escape the things the gas made others into...."
...
The chain rattled around the shuttleport's door handles as Marty took a deep breath. He should be able to buy the people inside some time to evacuate if he was lucky. Picking up his Dane axe, he slowly turned to face the road behind him that lead to the shuttleport's main entrance. He could see the tide of diseased monsters sprinting at him like some macabre marathon. Ripping his veagvsir from his neck he wrapped it around his knuckles.
As the screeching tide bore down on him, he smiled. After all, what is the loss of one life if it saves a hundred more?
...
Lorak gazed up at his grandfather eyes filled with disbelief and still moist with tears. His grandfather closed his eyes and nodded softly.
"All over the city, as though by some previous agreement, dozens of people risked and even gave their lives to get others to safety."
Stroking his grandson's head feathers he asked.
"Do you remember a few weeks ago when that car got hit by a hovercraft over on clarent street?"
Lorak nodded, squeaking back.
"It had its own emergency broadcast, somebody was really hurt."
His grandfather chuckled his approval at the boy's memory, though wished his life had been less hectic.
"But they didn't die, do you remember why?"
Lorak shook his head.
"Because somebody saw it happen and didn't just stand by..."
...
Carter heard an almighty bang just outside the ice cream parlor. He shot out of his seat, leaving the cute avian girl he was dating stunned in hers.
He spotted the wreck in seconds and rushed over after spotting the dazed elderly alien in the hovercraft's driver seat. With inhuman strength he ripped the buckled door open and gently grabbed the alien's shoulders. His eyes widened a good margin as he checked their pulse and felt it shudder to a stop. Carter didn't even hesitate as he pulled the elderly alien from the driver's seat and began to administer CPR. He felt their ribs crack as he shouted.
"Somebody call a fucking ambulance and help me out here!"
...
Lorak gazed up at his grandpa with curious eyes, he was starting to feel less afraid as he nodded slightly.
His grandfather gave him an approving head pat before gazing off into the distance.
"A long time ago I was in the military just like your father and brother, I almost died on my first deployment..."
Lorak's eyes widened as his grandfather told him one of his war stories.
...
Grimdark D'narvoc lay wounded on a street in a city he didn't belong to. He wanted to cry as he desperately fought to stay awake, he had a wife and child at home he was about to leave behind. Suddenly, a shadow passed over him, he felt his time coming to an end. Then a thick pad of gauze was placed against his wound just as his hand fell away. Without the strength to open his eyes, he softly thanked the gods for whoever was treating his wounds. A soft voice calmly speaking to him through the entire thing.
"Deep breaths, this wound is gonna need some real patching up. But don't worry, I'll get you all patched up and you can go home, how's that sound?"
Grimdark couldn't hardly respond to the impossibly soft and kind voice except to finally let himself cry. The kind voice simply replied.
"We'll get you home friend, don't even worry about it."
Grimdark's chest heaved as he cried his fears away. He'd get to see his family again and that's all that mattered to him.
...
Lorak hugged his grandpa tightly and his grandfather hugged him back. Tears moistening old Grimdark's eyes.
"A human had saved me, even when we were fighting against them. You know what he told me Lorak?"
The young boy shook his head.
"The human told me 'when the world seems mean and scary, Look for the helpers.' Lorak I know it's scary not having your brother and father at home, but there's not a doubt in my mind they'll make it home. Because even on the battlefield, you'll find Helpers, and so will they."
Lorak yawned and nodded softly, slipping out of his grandfather's lap and heading for his room.
Grimdark watched him go with a slight wistfulness. He too was worried how his son and grandson were faring, but he also knew in his heart that they'd make it home. After all, they were fighting alongside an entire race of Helpers.
...
Torin and Barian D'narvoc were pinned down on the front and nearly out of ammunition. They'd said their prayers a long time ago, but now, father and son just quietly embraced each other and awaited the inevitable. Then a warcry cut through the din of battle.
"Do you want to live forever!?!?"
Then like a group of guardian angels, three humans in ragged gear leapt into the trench. One immediately slapped down their Lmg's bipod before opening fire. The rest simple propped their rifles up and joined in on the suppressing fire. One grabbed Torins shoulder and shouted.
"Go! We'll hold them off while you get to the fallback point."
Torin and Barian needed no more encouragement and as the humans slung covering fire down range, they climbed the lip and ran for the friendly trench. As they dropped down they heard one of the human commanders yelling for artillery.
The last they saw of their saviors was one lone, bloody human manning a Light machine gun until the first artillery shell landed and the could see them no longer.

2023.03.25 09:21 DanteTheLatinoBaby Death Anxiety after loss, any ideas to cope?
My grandmother passed away last year near Christmas. At the time I just didn't feel any way about it. We were never super close, she was actually quite mean to me as a child and I didn't ever really like her until I became her caregiver. However, over the past two month I've gotten this extreme death anxiety. I think it might be because she's the first "close" person I've ever lost, before her I only dealt with distant relatives and pet death.
I experienced a little death anxiety before her passing, as at the time I think I was grieving the fact that I'd never really get to know or get close to her. But it's really ramped up with time. For example, I have a few elderly coworkers (60-70s) and sometime while just talking to them, it hits me that even though they are healthy and have no problem doing work that they could just be hospitalized or die tomorrow. My boss (also a man in his 60s) had a heart attack not to long ago and although he's fine now the idea of it just feeds my anxiety. Like when I get this way I feel like I'm grieving my future death and the future deaths of the people around me.
At first it would hit me here and there when I thought about my grandmother and her life, but now I feel like I think about death all the time. It fills me with dread and makes me cry. I'm not entirely sure if it's the not knowing what comes after or if it's the not being able to live my life forever and ever that scares me, but it's placed itself deep in my chest. Generally, I think what starts it is talking about what I want to be doing in the future and where I want to be. Which aren't conversations I can avoid, I'm about to turn 21 next month everyone's a little excited.
I have spoken to my therapist about this, but she wasn't a big help. She just told me that 1) I'm too young to be thinking about death and 2) I should consider turning to religion (which is easier said than done, I can't just start believing after never believed in my entire life). I have anxiety in my normal day to day and my normal coping strategies aren't helping. Shopping, being around people, daydreaming, listening to music. My mind still wanders back to the concept of death.
I'm writing this at 4am because every time I clear my mind to go to sleep I just get filled with dread again and start crying again.

2023.03.25 09:15 Glass_Sentence7139 DreamWorld/Land of Nod
Ok, so this is my first reddit post, so please excuse any confusion. Recently, while watching YouTube, I stumbled upon a list of 10 alternate/parallel universe stories. I have believed in the theories of alternate universes forever...I mean literally, for as long as I can remember, and I have good reason.
I am a woman, almost 50 y.o, who has always had these "dreams". In my dreams, I am someplace else, but with full memories of ever part of my life when in the dream. I wake up at least 5x's/night, with full memories of the dream I had just had. I tried keeping dream logs, but, with the amount of dreams I have a night, along with the details remembered in each dream, I don't have the time to write down each dream. If i were to write them, they would be complete stories, not dreams. I almost wish I had someone who could write them for me.
The majority of my dreams are all in the same world. I call this world "The Land Of Nod", Don't ask me why I call it that, I started calling it that when I was about 15 and it just stuck.
My earliest memory of having repetitive dreams and dreams of this other world, was about when I was either 4 or 5, but I am sure I have had them my whole life, unfortunately, our brains don't start storing memories until about that age. My earliest memory of this life, was when I was approx. 3-4 y/o. My parents tell me that as a baby, I had colic until I was 9-months old, that's pretty late for colic, considering it usually subsides by the time a baby id 3-4 months old, I truly believe that it was not colic that kept me awake all night instead of sleeping, I believe I was having these dreams even then. At that young age, and I believe i was so confused, about what to believe and what not to believe, kept me up, crying, trying to stay in in world. Now, I know this is just a guess, but if you had experienced the things I have experienced thru-out the past 49 years of my life, you would understand why I feel this way. My friends and co-workers ask me everyday about my dreams the night before. Sometimes I tell them, sometimes I don't and sometimes i can't, because in "The Land Of Nod", there are creatures that don't exist here. There are everyday animals sold in their pet shops that don't exist here, on this plane, and most importantly, there are colors that don't exist here. They are impossible for me to describe, and although I will vividly remember the colors I see for several days after the dream, the memories slowly fade with time. But one thing I am sure of, they were there.
I compare it to how different animals, can see different colors due to the cones in their eyes. They say dogs only see in black and white, yet some insects can see different colors on the color spectrum, like ultraviolet, that our human eyes can't even imagine. Well, you can think I'm insane all you want, but it's true. There are amazing, marvelous, beautiful colors, both light and dark, shimmery, yet not opaque, indistinct, yet comprehensible, all at the same time.
When i say I wake up 5x/night,I am not exaggerating, in fact, I am lowering the bar. There have been times when i have woken up 9-10x/night due to these dreams.
Like I said, the majority of the time, I go to the same world when i dream. I know the whole town so well, I could draw a map. I know where the movie theater is,the mall, the train stations and the houses.
While some of you are probably thinking that I have taken bits and pieces of the real world and introduced them to create "The Land of Nod", i assure you, that is not the case. These are places, I know I have never seen, with people, most of who I have never met. Sometimes different people in my family will be there, and other times, someone entirely different would be my mother or father. On these occasions, I remember that whole entire life, clear as day. All the memories are intact, Sometimes, I am me, but younger, or older and other times, I am someone completely different. I have been a black woman in my dreams (I am a white woman in this dimension). I have been a Chinese male, and a Chinese female. For some reason, I have been Chinese more than any other ethnicity,
Now don't go getting up in arms over race and sex....I have no control over my dreams in the past, or even who I will be tonight.
A common theme with most of my dreams is the world ending. I have dreamt about this more times than I could begin to explain. 9 out of 10 times, in my dreams, the world ends due to floods and tsunami's. On occasion, I have been in the thick of it, trying to save people and get them on boats. But most of the time, it's after the fact. The damage and destruction. The haunting shapes of twisted metal from where skyscrapers use to be. I will say this: all of the dreams about the tsunami catastrophes appear to be far in the future. I can tell by what has been left over. The remnants, even of the twisted skyscrapers, are nothing that even remotely looks like this century.
I have not only had dreams of the end times, I have had dreams where I have lived a whole lifetime, grown up, fell in love, got married, grew old and relaxed with my old, true love, on a raft, in a makeshift lake that was inside a giant spaceship, where we could look up and see the clear dome, at least a 100 feet above us, showing all the stars. I remember the peace I felt in that moment. The peace of knowing I had a good life, with a man I love and being ready to accept death.
I have had movies that were complete movies. I( watched them fro beginning to end. They don't exist here in this dimension...believe me, I have searched. I have dreamt of musicals, one I remember i call "Stomp", because it was a horror, comical musical, of this band of gypsies, that floated from town to town, killing people, by stomping their heads while circling around them singing. I remember all these and more, vividly.
I have seen giant insects like 4 feet long spiders and 12 inch bees, whose abdomens were completely transparent, so much so, that I could see the intestines, both blue and green, inside the liquid sac of their abdomen.
I don't know why, after all these years I am talking about this.
I believe, honestly in my heart, that these are different dimensions that are out there, but we are unable to see or touch them, at least I can't when I'm awake,.
One more thing I would like to mention. When i crawl into bed and drift off to "The Land of Nod", i almost always find myself waking up there. I go to sleep here and wake up, still drowsy, in a different bed, but knowing where I am and who I am.
This was just a quick synopsis of my dream world and how i believe it relates to parallel dimensions. If anyone is interested, I have dreams and stories from the other side that could last for days. Do the math: between 4- 10 dreams a night, every night. Almost always remembering every detail. I have a lot written down, but more in my memory, stored, hoping someday to possibly write a book, or one of the movies or musicals I saw in the other world.
I would like to do a sleep study someday, but I wouldn't know what to say as to why. It's not really a medical reason, so insurance wouldn't cover it. I wish there was a scientist out there, studying dreams and other dimensions. If there was, I would be the perfect candidate.
Until then, if anyone happens to find my dreamworld interesting, amusing, or has had similar occurrences, Please let me know.
Sleep well. Don't fear. Namaste.
I certainly have no shortages of dream stories to tell....I just don't have enough time left on earth to tell them all.
Good night all...I'm off to "the Land of Nod" again. Hopefully I will only visit the other world no more than 5 times tonight......it takes a toll on my waking life.
I have never written about it before, maybe the fact that you are all a bunch of strangers that can't judge me helps me to speak my dark into the light. I've gotta be at work in a few hours, and I have an extremely tough job, being an SUD counselor for addicts in a recovery home, so I have to be on-point. Thanks again for listening to an old lady drag on about nothing and everything at the same time. I appreciate all of you. There is purpose, both in this life and the next, I can promise you that!

2023.03.25 09:14 GeometryDash_Gamer (DISVENTURE CAMP SPOILERS) "Sabotage Below Zero" Aiden isn't that bad
As some of you know, I’ve been watching some of the TD fanseasons, one of which includes Disventure Camp. And I’ve now seen quite a bit of people’s takes on it. Though there seems to be one heavily controversial character throughout, that being Aiden. And while a lot of people don’t like him due to him going very far despite…not having much of a personality to latch onto aside from just being an average teenager (well, and IG having a cool voice and design), his characterization and handling throughout episode 9 seems to especially be strongly hated by various people. Now I’m just going to preface things, the whole drama between James, Aiden and Karol is absolutely atrocious and makes me lose a ridiculous amount of brain cells with how it goes down. Even in hindsight, it was the one plot in DC I genuinely disliked, and I’ve just grown to hate it more and more overtime. Though for this post, I’d like to delve into things on Aiden’s end and explain why he’s nowhere near as bad as various people make him out to be, and if anything, the one character I actually sympathize with throughout this drama
The main complaint people tend to lodge against Aiden here is how upon Karol returning, she gets pretty villainized for wanting to get them eliminated, even though she had a justified reason to be mad given how James orchestrated her elimination. Now if this complaint was only just applied to James, I’d absolutely agree. But it’s almost like people seem to think Aiden was also in on Karol’s elimination or IG “betrayed” her in some way. Though when we look back at episode 2, all Aiden did was talk to Karol to try to get her in an alliance with James and Aiden. But then once Aiden told James that Karol was also in on voting one of the 3 girls, James just randomly decided to snitch on Karol to the girls to get her eliminated, since all three of them voting for one of the members of the girls alliance trio apparently made too much sense IG. Yet for some reason...Karol gets mad at Aiden only and calls him a traitor. Now granted, it can be argued that from Karol’s POV, Aiden told James what she said, which led to James snitching on her, meaning in a way Aiden betrayed her. But even then, I can’t help but wonder how she didn’t notice Aiden actively protesting while James was ratting her out, which I would think should be a big sign to her that Aiden wasn’t in on what James was doing at all. I mean, Karol even seems to think Aiden as well as James manipulated everyone into voting Karol out. But if Aiden actually also purposely told everyone about what Karol said…why would James also need to do so? And why would Aiden be actively protesting while James is doing so?
But that aside, this then rolls over to episode 9, AKA writing quality below zero "Sabotage Below Zero", where Karol returns and acts oddly very nice, only for it to turn out her nice demeanor is just a facade to win others over so she can get Jaiden voted out for what they did to her (or “did” in Aiden’s case). However, James is able to catch Karol plotting against them as she confides in Riya about her plan, and then records it and shows it to Aiden. They both realize they have to actually try to do something to hinder Karol from carrying out her plans against them. And this is where Aiden’s most controversial moment comes in. In order to prevent her from winning the challenge, he sneaks a tarantula Karol gave him earlier (while she was trying to play nice with him) onto her sledding partner Oliver, to distract them. As it turns out, it actually works, but…not in the way Aiden intended for it to. Oliver and Karol end up crashing during the challenge, which leads to Karol getting injured as Oliver just so happens to land in one of the most unfortunate spots possible, that being on top of Karol’s leg. And then in an extremely anticlimactic and copout resolution to this rivalry, Karol pulls a TDI Eva (that being getting eliminated just after she returned) and gets medically evacuated, not before protesting immensely
It’s also worth noting that at one point before Karol’s injury, Aiden unnecessarily rams into Karol’s sled while confronting her, out of anger at her for plotting against him and James (all the while pulling a nice facade with them). And then afterwards, she rams into them back. Though what’s especially weird is what unfolds after Karol gets injured. As Aiden makes it down to the hill, Karol gets mad at Aiden and curses him out for inadvertently getting the tarantula killed as a part of his sabotage (the tarantula also ended up getting crushed while on Oliver, as a result of their collision). And then, Aiden claps back by bringing up how she rammed into them…even though he did it first. Though while that is indeed hypocritical and an L on his part, it’s a pretty minor part of the general plot. That is unless you think him ramming into Karol was also what led to her being injured. But it didn’t. It was Oliver being distracted by the spider that caused them to crash, which led to Oliver landing on Karol and injuring her, which happened some time after Karol successfully rammed back into Jaiden and actually knocked them over
For my final thoughts, I’d say Aiden is actually surprisingly great this episode. I can always appreciate anti-heroic or pragmatic characters who are generally well-intentioned but aren’t above getting their hands dirty when push comes to shove. It's also the one time Aiden actually strategizes aside from having a good social game. And overall, I think his sabotage was pretty justified and understandable, and didn’t cross the line into being too despicable for me to not root for him. As even Aiden himself says, he wasn’t remotely trying to injure Karol, but rather he was just trying to distract her so she wouldn’t win immunity, and so Jaiden could actually try to get her voted out. And for the record, multiple other people also flew off their sleds and were fine afterwards. So the only real reason Karol actually got injured was because Oliver landed on her. Now admittedly, you can maybe make a case that Aiden could’ve been more outwardly apologetic to Karol about injuring her. But nonetheless, he still made it clear with James later on that he actually felt bad for it and didn’t intend to hurt her. And considering how two-faced and scummy Karol was being to Aiden, I can’t say I totally blame him for being defensive when she yelled at him. All things considered, Aiden is the one person I can actually fully sympathize with throughout this plot. He had no idea James would did what he did, and as a result was very undeservingly the subject of Karol’s scorn, despite them actually being cordial with each other earlier on. Although I'm not a fan of Karol throughout this plot either, I feel bad for her to a degree as well. After being the last one on her team standing in the challenge, she got humiliated and painted in a bad light because of James, who got her eliminated as a part of…probably one of the dumbest strategies I’ve ever seen. And then despite this, she gets villainized during her return as she justifiably tries to get revenge (even if half of her spite was misplaced). Ultimately, I’d say James easily sticks out the worst during this plot. On top of being the catalyst that started this entire mess, he also gets painted in the right to Karol along with Aiden…even though he was the one who actually got her eliminated, and in a more scummy way for that matter. I’ll also never get over just how completely brain-dead his """"""""""strategy"""""""""" leading to Karol's initial elimination is, but that’s a topic for a separate post

2023.03.25 09:02 NoxUmbra8 How do I read Spider-Man 2099 Exodus?
If anyone could help, id really appreciate it. What is the order of reading for this series? There's the omega, alpha, and numbered issues, but in what order are they meant to be read and do I need much previous knowledge? I've read most of the 90's 2099 run, and his appearance in the Nick Spencer Amazing Spider-Man run, am I missing something big I should read for context to Exodus stuff?
Thanks again, and let me know if this isn't the right place for this question!

2023.03.25 08:54 throwawaydogpark23 AITA for taking my non dog friendly dog to the dog park?
Okay to clarify: I'm not sure if my dog is dog friendly or not and I'm not using strangers' dogs as guinea pigs.
So, I adopted a dog, Tiger (9) about a month ago. He's a very high energy dog. I didn't think he would be since he's 9, but he is. I have a small yard near a busy road, but I live 5 minutes away from a dog park. I take him there at least twice a week, usually more though. I try to take him at odd hours when it shouldn't be crowded, and usually it's empty. If there's dogs in there, I take him for a couple laps around the park. Usually by the second lap the park is empty. If it isn't, we jog another lap and go home. If another person starts coming up with their dog, I immediately call Tiger over and usually have him leashed up by the time the owner gets in. I keep a good eye out for any people coming up.
The problem was yesterday, there was a dog in the park, so we did a lap around. By the time we came back, the park was empty so I took him in. We spent a good 20 minutes in there without anyone else showing up. I was playing with him and I guess I wasn't paying enough attention and someone started entering with their dog. I called over to the person and let him know that my dog wasn't friendly and to give me a second to leash him up and we'll go. The man waited, it didn't even take a minute to leash him up and head out the gate. As we passed the man, he asked me why I'd even take a non friendly dog to the dog park. I told him I'm sorry, I'm on my way out now. He was still kinda bitchy about it, but I''d rather just take Tiger and go instead of explain myself.
I was on the phone with my dad and he asked me how Tiger was adjusting. I told him everything was good, and I told him about the interaction at the park. He sided with the man and said I should stop taking Tiger out when I haven't had him that long and don't know how he acts. I can see where they're coming from, but I feel like I'm being responsible about it and I always leave when I see another dog coming so I don't prevent anyone else from being in the park.
I understand where they're coming from, but I dont prevent anyone else from entering and using the park, but my dad told me it didn't matter. I feel like I don't do anything wrong, but I want more opinions. AITA for taking my dog to the park when I don't know how he reacts to other dogs?

2023.03.25 08:45 River_Jasmine How to tell my father he's being inconsiderate?
My family have been awful since the loss of our baby girl.
Not a single person has spoken Jasmine's name or talked about her. No one sent so much as a card, let alone flowers or teddies. I have received these from charities, counselling groups... My financial advisor calls me to check how I am and cried with me. The person I have a functional business relationship with has shown me more compassion and sympathy than my own family. That makes me furious and deeply hurt.
On top of that, multiple family members have asked when things will be back to normal. (WTF?! Never, you heartless robots!) And my father, who we live with, has just been... It was Christmas two days after we got back from the hospital. He demanded that my husband and I wait on him. Yes, really. No, he's not disabled or need help. Go refill this glass, go get the third helping of Christmas cake, do all the clean up afterwards, etc. At night, he plays video games until 4am on full blast. He refuses to turn it down or wear headphones. Yes, this is a 70+ year old man. The grief has made it difficult for me to sleep - I have nightmares, and am so tense and stressed that I wake up frequently with my shoulders shaking. Our grief counsellor said she'd write him a letter about the importance of sleep for us at this time. He took one look at it, said it was addressed to my husband and myself and only mentioned sleep amidst other general advice, and dismissed it. One time, I snapped and yelled at him to STFU with the video games noise at 1am. He told my husband yesterday that because of this, he thinks I'm "deranged" and intends to call a doctor to have me sectioned.
We left for a weekend holiday yesterday, to get away during our daughter's due date, very kindly sent on this by a charity for baby loss. I feel a sense of relief here I haven't known since Jasmine's delivery. I can grieve how I please, I'm not under pressure, or surrounded by absolute jerks.
My father's getting impatient with my not talking to him and demanding I do so "or else". I don't know how to have this conversation. Because I just know that telling him he's being inconsiderate and why won't change a thing. He'll deny everything, get defensive, blame it all on us, and possibly kick us out anyway. That's the kind of person he is, long before we lost our baby. He never considers anyone else, and always demands to be catered to. I've never once in my entire life heard my father admit to being wrong about anything or apologise. I gave up on my father years ago. I knew he'd just never give a damn about me, so I stopped trying to make an effort. I just have no idea how to have this conversation and am skeptical if it's even worth it. But I'm being threatened, so I guess I have to.
Any advice on how to do this?

2023.03.25 08:22 Eldershit I want advice on a opening for a realistic horror story. Does this work well?
Starts off with a investigatophysiologist from a 'special ops' division going to the biggest prision to interview a criminal who reveals a myseterious object causing the criminals wife to summon a demon and get possessed. Object found in basement of new home they live in. She kill their kids while he was out chopping firewood. Guy comes back and hacks wife to bits after she tries to attack him. Guy kills her and fights the demon in the living room. Manages to kill it with the axe and burns the entire house down to kill the 'evil' based on the legends of the old house they bought and the shit he's just seen. Court sends him to prision where he tells the investigator (MC) about this. Is this a intresting opening and please review what I've done so far. Thanks for any tips.
Novak Merlock sat in the back of a military jetty heading towards one of the countries' most dangerous places. The notorious Hexton Island Prison housed at least ten-thousand criminals behind its pallid gray walls and its four towering watchtowers that stood proudly in the four corners of the square-shaped prison were armed with heavy-duty machine gun turrets. A garnish of razor-sharp barb-wire lined across the top of the walls. It looked mancing and dangerous, reflective of the kind of people it held. Behind him the city harbor shrunk as the boat went ever-closer to Hexton Prison.
The two armed guards handed Novak a waiver that he needed to sign to be allowed into the prison.
"Hello, sir. You need to sign this waiver to be allowed inside the prison and speak to the prisoner that your case requires. Legally, we need to explain the terms of the waiver to you before you sign it. Do you understand ?," inquired one of the guards.
"Understood," replied Novak, taking a pen out of his blazer pocket.
"The most important details are that there is a risk of being injured or killed by the prisoners, that you must follow all instructions given by the military personnel, and that you are not allowed to bring anything that could be used as a deadly weapon. Additionally, everything about your interaction will be recorded and could be handed over to other state officials. If you comply, you can fill the waiver," stated the other guard.
"Alright, I comply with the terms," asked Novak
Novak skimmed through the terms written on the paper that the guard had just explained. Before putting his name, purpose for visiting and signature down on the waiver before handing it back to the guard. The guard slipped it into a wooden box before pulling the latch down. The guard held onto the box for the remainder of the journey.
A while later Novak was standing in the office building of the prison getting his ID checked while he was being searched head-to-toe by guard with a metal detector and a regular pat down search. The only items he was allowed in was his notepad and a stubby short pen-ink refill tube that was provided by the prison. Before finally being allowed to pass through a series of doors into the main structure of the prison where the inmates were held.
Led by a private escort of five muscular guards armed with a baton and small riot shield. Novak walked through a labyrinth of cells. Contained behind bars, lived people in orange jumpsuits who had committed truly horrific acts without a morsel of regret for their actions. An aura of danger emanated off them, it wafted into the hallway. Novak even after years of dealing with criminals was still anxious about being near them. Though he never showed it. Novak revised the specific questions he would be asking to the certain prisoner who had the dubious honor of meeting with Novak- accredited to be one of the best in his line of work. Novak had pedantically read through the case file at the agency headquarters and memorized the majority of it.
After walking through a maze of cells he was led into an interrogation room where a prisoner had been seated in a metal chair bolted to the floor. His hands were bound in thick handcuffs which were attached to a bolted metal table by a metal chain with a carabiner on the end. The criminal's legs were tightly bound with a pair of ankle-cuffs. Novak took a seat opposite him as instructed by a guard. The stocky man wearing an orange jumpsuit had pale skin, greasy curls of brown hair and piercing emerald eyes that looked straight into your soul. He had a slight crooked smile when the door opened, showing off his amber-stained teeth. The man in orange sat up unnaturally still and straight.
The guards left the room but stood outside but looked through a window in the door.
“ Abiram Pierce. Could you tell me about what happened at your home on the 23rd of April 2012,” Novak inquirered

Missouri man makes harrowing rescue in flash flood
As heavy rains and flash floods doused southwestern Missouri Friday, Layton Hoyer wanted to get a closer look at the rising river levels. That is when he noticed an SUV caught in the flash floods near Granby.
At first, Hoyer thought the car might have been abandoned, but flashing brake lights caught his eye. The lights were blinking as if someone was intentionally tapping the brakes. He got on top of the train tracks near the ditch where the SUV was trapped and saw someone inside.
“I could see this elderly woman lying in this car trying to stay in the air bubble,” he said.
The 33-year-old quickly called 911, but he said the woman didn’t have much time left as the car continued to sink. Hoyer tried to reach her car from the passenger side, but the current was too strong. He then waded through the cold water before he too was submerged and then lunged, grabbing onto her car.
“I got a hold of the back door and started trying to pull the door open. But the vacuum on the door was so tight,” he said.
He said he was able to break the seal at the top of her window jam and open the door.
“I swear there was only a foot of air gap left in the back part of her car,” he said. “I just grabbed her by both arms and pulled her out of there.”
Hoyer rushed to get them both inside his truck to warm up.
SKIP ADVERTISEMENT Jim Channel, assistant Granby fire chief, was responding to a call of an 80-year-old woman trapped in a car when he arrived on the scene. Channel had been called to water rescues by Old Ritchey Road before, but he wasn’t surprised to see who was there.
“I’ve known the young man all his life, and he will do it again tomorrow,” Channel said of Hoyer. “He didn’t even think about what he was doing.”
Channel said he along with other rescue workers attempted to save the women’s three dogs inside the car, who were trapped in cages, but they couldn’t reach them in time before getting called to another water rescue.
Hoyer didn’t get a chance to get the woman’s full name. But he said he would like to see her again.
“I would love to put my arms around her ‘cause she just cried in my arms and told me how thankful she was when the ambulance got there,” he said. “I was so thankful that God put me there to help her.”

2023.03.25 08:20 Other-Borderlands K♥️: Sanctuary [Part 2]
K♥️
: Sanctuary [Part 2] This game is the last entry of a series of games, where I have written games for all 52 cards for a borderlands in the UK. Each one includes a story of how I imagine the game playing out. You can find all entries here. Venue: Church
Rules: Live in the church until the pastor presses the button
Fourth Day of Exhibitions The day began almost the same as the other three. They woke up, they ate breakfast they got to work. They had gotten to work, but still, Alfie refused to work.
Roger had worked in the garden, and was happy with the work he had done filling up all the allotted land, before he walked in to tell Noah. As he went to look for him, he caught sight of Alfie, and walked over to him.
“Why do you continue to refuse to work?” Roger asked Alfie.
“I’ve told you, he’s manipulating you! Can’t you see it? All he needs to do is lull you into a false sense of security, then he can slowly pick you off one by one. Once he has your trust he can keep going, and going, and then you’re all dead. He wins.” Alfie said.
“You’re crazy.” Roger said, turning away.
“I’m Crazy!? After all we’ve been through, you walk in here and only a day later you’re worshiping the guy. He is literally the King of Hearts!” Alfie shouted at him.
“Is everything alright here gentlemen?” Noah said, walking up to them.
“No Noah, it’s fine” Roger said walking away.
Noah watched Roger walk away, after telling him that the garden had been finished.
“Alfie. This is your last warning. Please join the colony, or I will have to punish you. Now, get to work.” Noah said, before walking away. Alfie stood where he was.
Noah waited to see if Alfie would join them in the Kitchen, but after a few hours, when it was time for lunch, Alfie still hadn’t turned up.
Noah gathered all the workers, handing out food.
“Today, I have to make a notice. One of our colonists is refusing to work. Yet, he sleeps in our beds, eats our food, and benefits from your labour. But does he help? No. He refuses. That man, is Alfie.” Noah pointed at him. “I would advise you to stay away from him, he is a dangerous influence to our colony. I will try and get him to work, but he will likely refuse once more, like the selfish person he is. That is all.” He said, before sitting down for food.
Alfie walked out in anger.
They finished their meal, and Noah walked to the gate, to see if any new colonists would arrive. He took a bite from his apple, and saw an old woman approaching.
“Hello, my child. Are you’re to join our sanctuary?” He asked, and the woman looked back at him confused, before she walked into the churchyard.
“Are you just going to ignore me?” Noah said.
“Tell me the rules then.” The old woman said.
“The rules are simple. No violence, don’t leave the churchyard. To clear the game, I need to press the button on the church altar freely.” The King said.
“What?” The Old woman said. “That’s not a game!?”
“This place is our sanctuary. Here we can live until our eventual end without having to see the horrible suffering the games cause, or by having to participate in them.” Noah explained.
“Why on earth should I even trust you?” The Woman said.
“It’s because it’s the truth. This place is a true place of safety that frees you from the games.” Roger said, walking up, followed by another gardener.
“Wait, how long have you been here?” The old woman asked them.
“He was here since the start, I arrived yesterday. Trust me, Noah is telling the truth. This place is a little slice of safety in an uncaring world.” Roger said, as the man nodded.
“Thank you for your help Roger. I presume you have finished the garden?” Noah said.
“Yes Noah. We still have a few seeds left over, however, so we may want to increase the size of the garden.” Roger responded.
“Ok. I’ll discuss it with the planners later. For now, I will give our guest here, a tour of our sanctuary.” Noah said, leading the old woman into the church. “What is your name?”
“Margret.” The old woman responded.
“Margret, it is nice to have you here. In this main hall is our dormitory, and at the end we have set up a kitchen. Outside is the garden and where we keep the animals. We also have extra rooms for enter-“ Noah said, being cut off by a voice from the other end of the church.
“Got a new sheep, have you Noah? Trying to get a on record on your brainwashing?” Alfie said, scowling at him while lent against a wall.
“Ignore him, he is a selfish freeloader who seeks to tear the place apart.” Noah said, quickly ushering Margret down into the lower floors.
“If you join Tracy in the planning room, I’ll assure you that she’ll find a good role for you. I have to deal with our trouble maker for a second.” Noah said, heading back up the stairs.
He met with Alfie.
“I’m begging you Alfie, please stop trying to destroy what we have here. We can live at peace with each other, defy the evil of this world. Just join us and all will be forgiven.” Noah said, pleading with him.
“I won’t believe your lies Noah.” Alfie said.
“Very well. I give you until sunrise tomorrow to reconsider.” Noah said walking away.
“Or what? Your own rules state no violence!” Alfie said.
“Violence is subjective. A push is not, under my definition, violence.” Noah said.
“Was that a threat!?” Alfie said, running towards Noah, jumping on to him. “Is this violence!?” He shouted at Noah.
Noah lay on the ground, awaiting Alfie to punch him.
“Come on. Do it. Punch me Alfie. You know how much you want to do it. Break your friends out from under my spell. Do it. It’s really easy. Just one sw-“
He felt a sharp pain across his face, and heard Alfie collapse to the floor.
Roger raced in, and saw the two of them on the floor.
“Noah!” He shouted. “Alfie!”
Noah stood up. “I’m fine, but your friend just came up and started att-“
Noah exhaled. “I’m sorry about him.”
“It’s ok. He wasn’t contributing.” Roger said.
“We will hold a service as soon as possible. Get started on the grave.”
Roger nodded, and gathered the gardeners to prepare a place to bury Alfie.
Noah looked at the roof, seeing the light stream in from where the laser had shot down. He would need to get it fixed. He went down to the planning room, and informed them of the news, before he added the fixing of the roof and the expansion of the garden to the to do list.
“Tracy, I’m very sorry for your loss.” Noah said.
“It’s hard to believe that he did it in the end…” She said, trailing off.
Noah announced the news to everyone at dinner, saying that he was sorry to have lost a member of the colony, even if he was unwilling and uncooperative.
By this point Margret had joined the planners and the cooks, and had become a valuable assistant.
They settled into their beds, Noah not telling them any tales today.
Fifth Day of Exhibitions Noah awoke early that morning, and went onto the roof. There were half gone now. He was surprised to see that Jack had made it this far. The Queen of hearts still hung in the sky too, and he looked at the card. He was not a betting man, but was sure that the Queen and him would outlast the others.
He woke up the cooks and they got to work preparing breakfast. They ate at their bunks, talking amongst themselves. Today’s breakfast was scrambled eggs, a delicacy many had not enjoyed for weeks. They were glad for such a delicious meal, and many thanked Noah for providing it.
The day passed smoothly for the first few hours, and everyone did their tasks. Now with Alfie out of the way, things seemed to have calmed down. He wasn’t sure if Alfie’s ideas had spread to anyone else, but he was sure he had managed to stamp out any possible support he had by portraying Alfie badly. Not even his friends supported him.
He walked up to the gates, eating from an apple. He watched weary until just before lunch, when a woman, her hands bandaged, began to walk up to the gates. She was dragging herself slowly, and he alerted those with any form of medical training to gather to their medical room as soon as she crossed the threshold.
The woman stepped in, seemingly not herself, and Noah quickly rushed the rules out to her before the medics carried her to try and treat her.
Clearly the Jack of spades had not been successful in his endeavours, and had now fallen.
He was informed the woman would be fine, and that she simply had been suffering from the cuts on her hands and a lack of water. They theorised that she may even have walked into the venue by accident.
Noah supervised various activities, before returning to greet the woman properly. She told him about her experience with the Jack of Spades, and he comforted her, telling her that she had entered the sanctuary and she was now safe from al of the other games.
He got her some of the soup they had made for lunch, and she ate it, gratefully. He asked her what she would like to do as a job once she recovered, recommending hard physical labor jobs due to her Jack of spades victory, and she agreed.
The afternoon passed smoothly, now the influence of Alfie had left, and they could live together in harmony.
In the evening, Noah got the woman, Kim, to recall her Jack of Spades experience, before he explained, that without this place, without the medical team, she may have died, yet now, here she was, free from all of that. He used her story to strengthen the trust they placed in him, as, after all, he had to keep them in his support if he wanted the sanctuary to continue.
He then began to talk about who the Jack of Spades was, and how he disapproved of his game. He told them about how the Jack of Spades was by no means a bad person to begin with. He had been kind, supportive, and a good friend to him, but once they arrived, he lost sight of his old self. He started to distrust Noah, and became the evil villain that had tortured Kim in his game. But Noah was different. He resisted that. He wanted the best for them.
A lone clap came from the back of the hall to interrupt Noah’s story.
“Very good, very good. You’ve used another person and their story to increase the trust others have for you, and quite frankly, it’s a wonderful idea. This game, the sanctuary, is great. You’ve found a perfect way to keep everyone alive while still preserving yourself. You spit in the face of the creator of this place. Amazing. The only problem is, I’m here to win.” A man in a hoodie said, walking forward. “Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Lucas, and I just beat the queen of hearts. I’ve come to finish the trio off.”
Noah looked at him. “Well, I think you are going to find that rather difficult….” Noah said. “I have no lan of pressing that button, and no one in this hall but you wants me to do so…”
“We’ll see, won’t we. Now, which bed do I get. I’ve had a long last hour.” Lucas responded. Noah pointed to a bunk, and Lucas lay down.
Noah continued his story, before they all went to bed.
Sixth Day of Exhibitions It was just him and Jack left now. The fact Jack had made it this far surprised him considerably, considering the nature of his game. Who knows, maybe God was looking out for him.
His routine was slightly different that morning. Instead of waking the cooks and preparing breakfast, he awoke Lucas.
“Perhaps we got off on the wrong foot yesterday. I am willing to give you a tour of the church, and then maybe you can tell me where you want to work. Let me assure you, this place is where you want to be. You don’t want to play any of the other games. You don’t want to clear all the games.” Noah said
“Yeah, whatever.” Lucas responded, getting up. “Although, in future, could you not wake me up so early in the morning?”
“Of course.” Noah said, leading him away.
He showed him the garden, the livestock, the underground rooms, and finally the Kitchen, where Lucas decided he wanted to work. He told Noah that he had always enjoyed cooking, and was quite good at it. Noah agreed to let him do so, and Lucas began to get to work on breakfast, as Noah woke the others up.
Lucas seized his chance, slowly walking out of the building with two sacks of potatoes, throwing them behind the wall, putting them outside of the area. He could slowly do this with all of the food, and then wreck the garden, Noah would quickly fall out of favour with the others. :Lucas did also realise, that in doing so would also damage his reputation, but he hoped most of the blame would fall on Noah.
He spent most of his day secretly throwing food out of the venue, before someone pointed out that someone had spilled a sack of potatoes just outside the churchyard.
Noah came to inspect it, and said that whoever it was should come forward, and Noah wouldn’t be angry.
Lucas stepped forward. “I’m sorry Noah, but I was carrying the potatoes, when I accidentally dropped them, and they all spilled out. I tried to throw the rest out to hide the evidence, but that was clearly a mistake.”
Lucas made his face look guilty, and Noah put his hand on Lucas shoulder.
“It is forgiven.” He said, before leaning in to Lucas “I know what you are doing. Stop, Now.” He whispered in Lucas’ ear.
Lucas looked at him, and nodded. Lucas walked back to the Kitchen, and began to properly work. He found that there were no other opportunities to get rid of food, so while everyone ate their food, he sat in silence contemplating when he could strike again.
He returned to work, and over a couple of hours, deliberated a conundrum.
The no violence rule should shield him from being stopped, so he could simply do it in broad daylight.
Just to be sure, Lucas waited until no-one was properly looking at him, or at the food.
Lucas saw a chance. He knew it was risky, but the no violence rule theoreticallymeant no one could stop him.
He picked up two bags in full view of everyone, and ran outside, throwing them through the gates.
“What the hell is he doing!?” Roger shouted.
“He’s decreasing the food supply to try and destroy our sanctuary! We must cats him out while we have the chance!” One of the gardeners shouted, and he rushed towards Lucas, about to push him.
“Wait! Don’t! No violence, remember?” Roger shouted.
“A push isn’t violence!” The Man shouted.
He prepared himself to push Lucas out of the churchyard, when an announcement rang out.
“There is only one game remaining. The Game is the King of Hearts. To join, please make your way to the venue.”
They stopped dead.
“Wait, if that’s true, then all that needs to happen for us to win is for Noah to press the button!” Roger said.
“Yes, but if we win we just have to become citizens ourselves. That isn’t what I want. I don’t want to have to create a game. I would rather stay here, with Noah. Don’t you? Or would you rather he died? Are you a traitor?” Someone said, and others agreed.
Roger was terrified. “That’s not what I meant..” He said, nervously.
“My children, calm down.” Noah said, walking out. “There is no need for our sanctuary to end because the other games have. We can still continue. Who is with me, and wishes to remain?”
The crowd gave a mixed reaction.
“After all I have done for you, after everything, you do not wish to remain?” Noah said, puzzled.
“Well Noah, one thing you underestimated was the human want for something they don’t have. Many here want to be able to leave the churchyard, which they can do if you press the button. In fact, your game is now more of a hindrance than an advantage. If you do press the button, they can at least go wherever they want. While you still live, They are confined to this churchyard.” Lucas said.
Noah was about to respond, when there was a large creaking from the church doors.
Four people walked in, the one at the front asking if he was interrupting.
“You…” Lucas said, looking at the schoolboy that had spoken, and then to the woman. “I’m surprised she made it this far. She cared way to much about people. Wheras you,” He said, looking at Ben. “I’m not one bit surprised. After you betrayed your friend, I knew you had it in you to survive this world.”
He turned back to the group. “See, now all the other games have gone, you will get more and more of these maniacs coming to make a stain on your perfect colony. Consider it-“
The door creaked open again, and three men and a woman walked in.
“As I was saying, more and more arrivals will come, and you will have to try harder and harder to keep them here. Anyway, I await you decision Noah. I am going to sleep now.” Lucas said, walking over to his bunk, listening as the crowd erupted into chaos.
Seventh Day of Exhibitions Lucas was awoken by the now familiar voice.
“The Button has been pressed. For all remains players, it is game clear.”
He shot up, seeing the others all looking around similarly. Lucas looked at the altar, where Noah’s dead body lay. It seems he crumpled under the pressure, and had decided to end his sanctuary.
The room was lit up with bright light from outside, and they all got up to make their way out.
Fireworks littered the sky, and as they filed out of the churchyard, they saw the King of Hearts Blimp explode behind them, and crash into the sanctuary.
“And I told him not to wake me early..” Lucas muttered.
“All Games have been cleared.” The Voice announced, and Lucas and the others continued to watch the fireworks displays.
“Now, the remaining players are offered a choice to continue the Death matches of the borderlands with Lifelong citizenship All player must individually provide a response now please.”
Lucas was the first to speak.
“I accept citizenship.”
Around him a chorus of declinations began, as he watched various players toying with what to choose.
John stood next to Grace, Sam, and Chris. They agreed together that they would decline citizenship.
They said it together.
Ben and James looked at each other. They knew they couldn’t continue in this world, and so rejected.
Alex and Mia did the Same. So did Kim, Roger, Tracy, Flo, and Margret.
They looked at the fireworks in the sky, which eventually coalesced to one glowing beacon in the sky, which slowly expanded, engulfing them.
Lucas shielded his eyes, and when he opened them, he found himself in an underground office, with various computers and chairs around. He looked at the table, seeing on it laid a King of Hearts card.
He stared at it, confused.
1st Day of Restitution “Yesterday, at around 10:00, there was a disastrous collapse at the Theatre, which has left large lists of casualties in its wake. A burst gas pipe caused the building to collapse as a result of its old age, burying many under layers of rubble. This follows yesterdays news of a bus crash in much the same place, which left 19 people in critical condition, all of whom have now passed. We are sure the city, as well as the greater region, will feel the affects of these two disasters for many years to come, and may never recover from the loss. Our heartfelt condolences to all the families.”
John clicked off the news broadcast. He was recovering in hospital from the events the previous day. He had been unlucky enough to be next to the theatre when it collapsed, burying him and the patient in the bed next to him under rubble. He looked over to the man in the hoodie laid out next to him, as well as the younger blond man on his right. He was glad to see some people had made it out safe, and he felt like he knew them well, assuming it was something to do with shared trauma.
In another part of the hospital, grace awoke next to her colleagues, Tracy, Flo, and Roger. It had been hard on her, the entire production crew, the actors, almost everyone involved in the production had been lost. She didn’t know any of them that well, but as she listened to the news broadcast run through the hundreds of dead, she couldn’t help but wonder why she was left alive. But she knew now she had to continue to live for those who had died, she couldn’t let herself get too wrapped up in the past. She wondered why her Dad hadn’t visited her yet, and asked one of the nurses to see if he had asked for her. The nurse informed her he had, but that he couldn’t see her as he was still being tended to. Grace was surprised by the fact her Dad had been there during the accident, but told the nurse she wanted to see him as soon as possible.
In another wing of the hospital, James turned to talk to ben, one of the only remaining members of his form. Mia lay next to him, drifting in and out of sleep. He had never really spoken to them, but felt he knew them really well.
Ben had been crying, thinking about everyone that had been lost, and James had shed a few tears too. While he had never really liked certain members of form, like Ellis, he didn’t think any of them had deserved this. Ben and James started to talk about their lives, and how grateful they were to be alive. Ben thought about how he had lost almost all his friends with one cruel sweep. The day before he had still been clinging on to the hope Jack would recover, but now their whole form was gone. Sophie, Tom, everyone.
Alex lay in bed, in hospital, watching the news play, informing everyone of the incident at the theatre. She found it hard to believe she had been there, and made it out. As the long list of casualties scrolled past, she felt so lucky to be alive. She caught sight of the name Kathrine Foreman on the screen, and couldn’t shake the feeling she had heard it somewhere before, it was like it was a person she couldn’t remember, a name she couldn’t put a face to. She lay back down, her arms and legs in pain.
Lucas He awoke, breathing heavily. He saw that he was where he should be, in the city, with everything in place.
Ever since accepting residency his dreams had been plagued with visions of doctors and nurses, talking about how he was comatose. He brushed the thoughts out of his mind, walking over to a sink and throwing water into his face.
He was alone here. No one else had chosen to stay. Yet, he still new almost as much as he did before. Why he was here, where here was, all lay unanswered. He shrugged.
He walked over to the table, preparing himself some food.
This was not what he had expected from citizenship, he must admit, but he welcomed the freedom of this world, even if no one could share it with him. The fax machine on the desk whirred, and he walked over to it, having only seen it in action once before. A list of names shot out of a fax machine near him, and he looked at them.
It was a table, with two columns. ‘Arrival date’ and ‘Player Name’. He had also been provided with a difficulty. Seven of Spades.
He looked at the paper, and smiled. This was more what he had been expecting.

2023.03.25 08:20 pro20blackoutz First Time Here: Taking Care of My Grandfather and his Businesses
Introduction Hello everyone, my name is Max; I am 18 years old and enrolled in university. (currently online only but will clarify later). First off before I talk about myself, I read through so many of my fellow peers' posts in this forum; and it really humbled me immediately about the situation I have to deal with on my own. I am so sorry for each and every one of you here who are hurting and suffering the loss of amazing loved ones who deserved anything but the fate they received. I can feel your pain through your words, and I can almost sense the love and amazing people in your pictures. It was truly a remarkable experience for me to really get a glimpse into the pain so many of us feel when death or suffering comes knocking at our doorsteps. Thank you for sharing your stories and I wish I could give each and every one of you a hug and whatever could take the pain away from you guys. None of you beautiful souls deserve to suffer.
Here's My Story: My grandfather is the toughest man I have ever seen in my life and by far the most dedicated and hard-working family man I have ever had the fortunate opportunity to meet and love. He immigrated from Yugoslavia in the 1970s before the brutal war in the 90s because he knew that the communist state was going downhill fast and that opportunities were drying up for him to raise a family and have a good life in the country he had lived in his entire life. He left his family in Yugoslavia when he immigrated to the United States to pursue the American Dream this country once had and to secure a better life for himself and his family. He came with pennies to his name, slept on park benches, did odd jobs wherever he could find them to make some money, and persevered through hell and back to bring his family to this country. As he juggled surviving in this country eating a bowl of soup a day and barely able to pay rent, he sacrificed everything he could to afford money to send to his wife and kids back in Yugoslavia so that they could live comfortably until he had enough money to bring them here to this country. His story truly is one that has resonated with me since I was a child, the true epitome of the American Dream. He worked hard day and night, came to a new country in which he had no money or no knowledge of how America function or how to speak a word of English; and built three dental practices and a real estate empire with his bare hands. He is solely responsible for my family's success. (We are not wealthy by any means, but he allowed us to be comfortable) As a child, I thought of him almost as a deity or godlike figure; unstoppable, invincible, and impenetrable.
In December of last year, this image I had of my grandfather being enormously wealthy and invincible was shattered by the harsh reality of what things actually were. My grandfather suffered a heart attack and drove himself to the hospital after he had tried to walk off the pain. (he had not realized he was suffering a heart attack until he was admitted to the hospital) I had prepared to enroll in college, but I decided to fly out to him and take care of him since he had no one able to do so. (some made excuses, some just couldn't be there for long periods of time, etc.) I flew out and when I saw him, he looked so frail and weak. His voice quivered barely able to speak. He spoke so softly it almost seemed like a whisper as if it required all his energy to simply utter the words he had on his mind. He couldn't get up on his own, he didn't know how to schedule doctor's appointments to resolve what lingering issues he still had after his procedure and to make sure he was still alright, he was basically unable to do anything at all that required any amount of effort. It was heartbreaking to see him in such a state, to have to help him up when all his life he had been completely independent and never required anybody's assistance. It was very hard to take care of him on an emotional level, although I executed my duties as necessary. My emotional pain was inferior in comparison to his physical pain, and I had to step up otherwise he would have died alone, severely ill, and miserable. I have been with him ever since taking care of anything he requires although he has recovered tremendously well since his heart attack. (he will never be as strong as he was before the heart attack, but I am glad he is as close as can be given the circumstances)
As I mentioned earlier; my grandfather has three dental practices (he practices very infrequently now after the heart attack as his staff left after his procedure in a truly evil manner in my opinion) and over 12 residential properties managing over 50 tenants, and I have had to assume a lot of the duties he once took care of himself to take the stress off his shoulders and lessen his workload. I am now primarily responsible for billing, managing tenant issues/disputes, and a majority of the duties that come with owning real estate. I have also had to do this while taking college courses and juggling the immensely overwhelming workload professors give out all while managing the overwhelming workload that comes with being a landlord. When we meet with tenants or our employees, he always tells them when he dies that I will take over the empire and be in charge of everything. Every time he says that it breaks my heart and at the same time it makes me feel selfishly amazing. I want to take over these properties and build it out further than my grandfather ever could given his limitations and how he had come from truly nothing. But at the same time, I am so fucking scared of losing my grandfather. I fear he will pass soon as most heart attack victims do after their initial heart attack, and that I will lose my best friend and greatest inspiration to be great. He made me a better person, helping me transition from ignorant adolescence to eye-opening adulthood that makes you see life through a different lens. No longer did I have rose-colored glasses that would allow me to remove the negatives of this universe and to only focus on and appreciate the positives. I have seen the worst and best of mankind in these past few months. I have seen desperation force people to make horrible decisions, and I have seen people purely destroy others because it could benefit them a little better. I have seen utter kindness purely just to help me and my grandfather out, and people who really care about us. I have seen more in these past few months to help me conceptualize the universe we find ourselves in than I have in my entire childhood. (Forgive me if I am rambling incoherently, it's hard to illustrate what I feel and what I have experienced)
Overall, I am terrified by the harsh world we find ourselves in. I used to think life wasn't so bad, that everything works out, and that people are inherently good. But in reality, it truly is not the case. My grandfather sacrificed everything to give our family a good life and he accomplished his goal; but now at 84 years old, he's heartbroken, he's sad, and he's trying to set everything up before he passes. Most nights I am here I am terrified that today may be the last day I see him, that he will pass peacefully in his sleep. That I won't be able to tell him how much I love him one more time. That I won't be able to tell him how much I appreciate all the things he has done for me and our family. He sacrificed everything to do good for his family, and yet he is suffering alone.
Without me being here, my grandfather would be dead. His empire would be destroyed, and his assets embroiled in a brutal legal battle brought on by his estranged daughter. I truly believe I saved him, but it never is enough. No matter how much I do, he is still going to suffer. There is still going to be more to do, there are still things that I will not be able to accomplish. No matter what, I will leave eventually and he will be back to being alone. His suffering will continue, and his pain is never-ending.
I just do not know what to do. I can't vent to my family because I don't want to burden them with the weight I carry on my shoulders just to relieve myself temporarily. I can't resolve all the matters that need resolving on my own. I can't save him as hard as I try. I just can't make things perfect.
Why is life so cruel and unfair? Why is it that good people always get crushed by the evil that is ever so prevalent in our society? Why is the universe designed to instill immense pain and suffering into us all? Why does my grandfather have to suffer given all that he is done? He's a god-fearing man, a family man, and a good man. Why does life have to be this way? These are all questions I have thought about heavily during my time here, and questions I do not think I will ever find the answers to.
The more I learn about life and about my family, the more I realize how all the nice wrapping we place around harsh truths can truly blind us. Once you tear away at the façade, you see an ugly and brutal void full of evil. You see the pain people feel, you witness the suffering, and you become one of them.
I have no one to talk to who could offer any kind of support to me in these trying times. I feel completely isolated, suffering, and alone just like my grandfather. It is what has bonded us ever so much over the years. We both understand each other because we are quite literally cut from the same cloth, which is not something I can say for the rest of my family. My grandfather and I are so similar, nearly identical; and it scares me that I will follow the same path as he did. That I will sacrifice everything to care for my family and yet in old age I will find myself alone and miserable. I am scared about so much, I am suffering so much, (I don't want to equate my pain to anyone else here, I know so many of you are suffering far more than me and I do not want to come across as selfish or arrogant) and I never feel anything I do will ever be enough. I fear our family is cursed, designed to be constantly divided and in pain. I fear that the empire we have will eventually fall, not grow. I fear that I will die young. I fear that I will never marry and have a family. I fear that I will lose my grandfather soon. I am fearful of so many things, and I am so saddened by this universe. I don't know why life has to be this way, do you?
I know my statements in this post may be incoherent at times and hard to follow, as I said earlier it is hard to really put into words the reality which I am experiencing. It's hard to put months and years of your life into a few paragraphs. It's hard to really process everything I am enduring more than anything. In conclusion, I want to make this world a better place. Not just for me and my family, but for society. I want to change the dynamic we have been so comfortable with shrugging off as just the way things are. I want to rid this world of unnecessary evil, I want to just make things perfect. But knowing how life is, these are mere dreams which I will never reach; just like the stars. I want life to be better, can any one help me?
Thanks for reading my dear friends. God bless each and every one of you. With Love, Max

2023.03.25 07:39 Tall_Phrase_9367 Henry David Thoreau Regardful of Solitude
Hi, I'm new and this sub makes me smile. I thought I'd share my favorite regards from Henry David Thoreau. May you regard and be regarded. 💙
I believe that men are generally still a little afraid of the dark, though the witches are all hung, and Christianity and candles have been introduced. Yet I experienced sometimes that the most sweet and tender, the most innocent and encouraging society may be found in any natural object, even for the poor misanthrope and most melancholy man. There can be no very black melancholy to him who lives in the midst of Nature and has his senses still. There was never yet such a storm but it was Æolian music to a healthy and innocent ear. Nothing can rightly compel a simple and brave man to a vulgar sadness. While I enjoy the friendship of the seasons I trust that nothing can make life a burden to me. The gentle rain which waters my beans and keeps me in the house to-day is not drear and melancholy, but good for me too. Though it prevents my hoeing them, it is of far more worth than my hoeing. If it should continue so long as to cause the seeds to rot in the ground and destroy the potatoes in the low lands, it would still be good for the grass on the uplands, and, being good for the grass, it would be good for me. Sometimes, when I compare myself with other men, it seems as if I were more favored by the gods than they, beyond any deserts that I am conscious of; as if I had a warrant and surety at their hands which my fellows have not, and were especially guided and guarded. I do not flatter myself, but if it be possible they flatter me. I have never felt lonesome, or in the least oppressed by a sense of solitude, but once, and that was a few weeks after I came to the woods, when, for an hour, I doubted if the near neighborhood of man was not essential to a serene and healthy life. To be alone was something unpleasant. But I was at the same time conscious of a slight insanity in my mood, and seemed to foresee my recovery. In the midst of a gentle rain while these thoughts prevailed, I was suddenly sensible of such sweet and beneficent society in Nature, in the very pattering of the drops, and in every sound and sight around my house, an infinite and unaccountable friendliness all at once like an atmosphere sustaining me, as made the fancied advantages of human neighborhood insignificant, and I have never thought of them since. Every little pine needle expanded and swelled with sympathy and befriended me. I was so distinctly made aware of the presence of something kindred to me, even in scenes which we are accustomed to call wild and dreary, and also that the nearest of blood to me and humanest was not a person nor a villager, that I thought no place could ever be strange to me again. —“Mourning untimely consumes the sad; Few are their days in the land of the living, Beautiful daughter of Toscar.” --- More regards and meaning from Henry David Thoreau's Solitude submitted by

2023.03.25 07:32 Abitterstan Do people forget Quaritch has almost and threatened to kill many other of the Suli children?
I feel like so much of his hate stems from the death of Neteyam (which I get…. I don’t like him either) but I feel like because the audience was shown that he can feel other emotions other than hate and anger that it makes him redeemable.
I’m sure in some way james can give him some sort of arc of becoming a good person, but I feel like people forget that the list of his sins don’t start and end with Neteyam’s death. Within this movie he quite literally seized all of the children, threatened to kill Lo’ak, orders a soldier to kill Neytiri (but Neteyam intervened), went and tortured then burned down the other village, after Neteyam died he uses his death to taunt Jake saying “your boy didn’t have to die, you brought this on yourself.” THEN AFTER doing that, proceeds to hold Kiri under his knife and cuts her while threatening to then kill his entire family and even tries to completely disregard spider (and fails) only after Neytiri inflicts physical harm on him. On top of you know having the children tied to the boat knowing that if nobody came for them they could have easily died or been killed by any impact to the ship or RDA just taking them out. Also held a gun to Lo’ak’s head on TOP of.
He has shown MORE times than not that he remains the same hateful man from the first movie and just because you see him feel sad that he died means that he’s some kind of changed compassionate man??? It just doesn’t click with me at all. Even the most evil people have someone that they love, but that doesn’t make them good.
I don’t know, this has been literally killing me lately 😭😭

2023.03.25 07:19 justjay9507 AITB for kicking a guy that was crawling during an MMA match
So I am an amateur MMA fighter and I have been in a few fights so far but a fight I just had I "used a dirty move".
Anyway I get in the cage and me and the other guy touch gloves, do all that, then we go back to our corners/sides to start. Immediately he gets in a Spider-Man pose like position as his starting stance, I didn't even know what he was doing. So the bell rings which is the way to start rounds off. I'm not even joking, the other guy was doing a crawl towards me.
Basically the Jon Jones crawl for MMA fans. So I don't know what to do because when he's like this there isn't much I can do, since he is on the ground and I can't really hit him, I can't take him down, the only thing that can happen is him taking me down and already having the advantage. There is no upside for me in this situation.
So I do the only thing I can do. Kick him right in the face and immediately knock him back and badly hurt him and the fight already gets stopped. I get awarded the win and I walk into the back locker room with my coach and everyone else in my corner.
My coach tells me that is a move that can easily end badly with my opponent severely hurt and in most cases it could end in a disqualification in most cases because I could've accidentally kicked the neck (which luckily I didn't) I basically tell him the same thing I put earlier that that was the only option.
And by the way for the people who are gonna say NTB for this thinking I didn't know. I did know that risk, but I was willing to make that risk to not get in a bad situation right away and I'm pretty confident in my accuracy.
So yeah that's my story, did I make the right choice or did I go too far to win?
