2023.06.09 04:29 Bubzoluck [30 min read] The Opioid Epidemic before the Opioid Epidemic - Exploring Morphine Derivatives and the First Opium War (Part 1)
| Hello and welcome back to SAR! I have written and rewritten this post a few times now and I think I have landed on a format I am happy with. When we talk about the impact of medicine on history its important to get the context right, and I think I have found a way to talk about our topic. So what is it? No chemical is more important to the world of medicine than Opium, okay maybe Penicillin, but today we will say its Opium. Principally an analgesic (anti-pain), the Opium Poppy allowed for humans to take away pain in great degrees and further development on the natural chemicals has opened up surgery and post-op recovery. While we tend to look at the recent Opioid Epidemic as the only issue regarding Opiates, history reveals to us a very similar precursor. Also please head over to u/jtjdp post about morphine derivatives here! She does an amazing job explaining the higher level concepts of medicinal chemistry that I just wouldn’t do justice. Alright, enough quibbling, let’s get to the good stuff. Disclaimer: this post is not designed to be medical advice. It is merely a look at the chemistry of medications and their general effect on the body. Each person responds differently to therapy. Please talk to your doctor about starting, stopping, or changing medical treatment. How Much do you Know About Pain? To be alive is to feel pain, and emo sentiments aside, this is one of the biggest biological properties of the central nervous system. When you think about it, how does the body take external stimuli and allow you to recognize it? The answer is the sensory nervous system which is responsible for sensing many different types of stimuli: temperature, pressure, pain, and chemicals. These sensory neurons carry the information from the extremities and transmit it up the spinal cord into the brain for processing. From there the brain alerts you to the issue allowing you to correct whatever problem is causing the pain. Let’s take a look: https://preview.redd.it/36yiuubbjw4b1.png?width=660&format=png&auto=webp&s=a8dc870ed6d879d67dce1eb126b86ba5acb9bc69 - We call these receptors Nociceptors and activation of these neurons in the periphery leads to a signal being sent towards the spinal cord. Those peripheral nerves eventually complex with the Dorsal Horn of the spinal cord and interface with the central nervous system to transfer the pain signal. This signal is then sent Ascending to the Thalamus where the pain signal is recognized and initiates a response (such as pulling your hand away from the hot stove). But that’s not the full story, the brain also sends signals back down Descending to modify the incoming signal and dampen it. Its this modifying that makes pain fade over time when you aren’t focusing on it—otherwise the brain would be overwhelmed by the repetitive signal and continuously think injury is still happening. Now let’s divide this process into its two parts, first up the Ascending pathway.
https://preview.redd.it/w6751owcjw4b1.png?width=896&format=png&auto=webp&s=122f8b2c615f741d848ed0171a574b1353a34038 - As the Action Potential travels from the periphery towards the Spine it causes the influx of Calcium into the Presynaptic Neuron. This neuron is what carries the original signal to then transfer into the Spine for further traveling. Eventually we reach the Synapse where the finger-nerve and spine meet and we get the transfer of information via Neurotransmitters. In this case, two chemicals are released: Glutamate and Substance P (which literally stands for Substance Pain). Glutamate will activate two receptors (AMPA and NMDA) which are Excitatory and stimulate the continuation of the pain signal up to the brain. Substance P activates the NK1 receptor which enhances the frequency of the pain signal (the throbbing) and the intensity of the pain burst. So to simplify, Glutamate allows the signal to be passed up to the brain but depending on the strength of the original pain signal more or less Substance P is released which modulates the strength and attention-grabbing nature of it. Okay great, we sent the pain pathway up and it will get processed in multiple different parts of the brain. But the brain can’t have that signal stinging it so it must send information back down to dampen that pain signal. This is where that aforementioned Descending pathway comes in. Above you can see how the blue line reaches down out of the brain and back into the spine to turn ‘off’ the signal. This is the basis of Analgesia or pain relief.
https://preview.redd.it/audgj8kfjw4b1.png?width=668&format=png&auto=webp&s=c3b58c520e8298e20f787d70e053948c3817c565 - Okay so now we have to divide the action of the Descending pathway which acts to dampen and modulate the original signal coming into the brain. Now, normally at rest this Descending neuron is inhibited so any fresh incoming signal is not inhibited from the get go but once that pain signal does come in, we get the good stuff! In response to pain the brain releases substances called Endorphins which activate the mu Opioid Receptor (MOR) located on the Descending pathway. Now MOR are inhibitory in nature so they are inhibiting the inhibitory resting state of neurons, or in other words, are allowing the Descending neuron to activate. And this is an important fact to recognize, Opiates do not inhibit pain, they inhibit the physiology of the nervous system that prevents modulation of the pain signal.
- Once the inhibition is inhibited, the Descending neuron is free to release two neurotransmitters onto the nerve that was carrying the original pain signal. Both Norepinephrine and Serotonin are released to activate their respective receptors which inhibit the release of Substance P and Glutamate thus decreasing the incoming pain signal. Likewise MOR receptors are found directly on the incoming nerve and further prevent the release of Glutamate and Substance P as well as being found on the Ascending neuron preventing the activation of the NMDA/AMPA and NK1 receptors. The result: dampened incoming signal and decreased pain sense being sent to the brain.
The Stars Align in the Shape of a Poppy https://preview.redd.it/nfygsi0hjw4b1.png?width=731&format=png&auto=webp&s=60c0b13cdad3d7b7b64f78d6294465f081839f61 To start our story about Opiates we need to turn to the great precursor—Opium. Opium itself is not a chemical but rather a really thick liquor (called latex) that contains a high concentration of Morphine (and some Codeine). There are 38 species of Poppy plants but only two produce Opium is great enough supply that it is worth farming them and humans have been cultivating these varieties for as long as we have known about the plants. When humans settled into Mesopotamia (near modern day Iraq), Poppies were one of the few plants grown in plots as large grain or vegetable fields (meaning that they were thought of as valuable as food). Throughout the Greek age of medicine (pre-500 BCE) through the Islamic medicinal revolution (500 BC-1500 AD), Opium was a major component of treatment, assisted suicide, and poison. In fact its through the rise of the Muslim Caliphates that we see the export of Opium to other parts of the world, especially through the Mediterranean Sea once the Crusaders return. Opium trading to the East via the silk roads was an almost continuous affair since time immemorial and Pakistan was a major growing area for the Eastern Poppy trade. - By the time after the Crusades (11-13th centuries), we start to see the West’s fixation on Opium. For many reasons Europe didn’t develop many psychoactive plants to the same degree as more humid/hot climates like Africa, the Middle East, and India. This is why the importation of Opium (and also Marijuana) was such a trade commodity and staple in the development of Western medicine. During the Renaissance and the revival of Greek philosophy we start to see the re-fascination with Opium and by the 1600s we see merchants importing Laudanum into Europe for recreational and medicinal use. The standard use of Tincture of Opium (which is Opium dissolved in ethanol, a DEADLY combination) was a particularly favorite preparation which was prescribed to the lowest day-worker all the way up to kings.
- The importation and use of Opium exploded in the late 1700s once the British conquered a major Poppy growing region of India. This region (western India and most of Pakistan) was originally slated to grow cotton like the American colonies but the region wasn’t wet enough to sustain the plant—it could however grow copious fields of Poppy plants to create Opium. Throughout the 18th century the British Raj became the largest exporter of Opium to Europe and after the discovery that Mercury and Arsenic may not be safe, Opium took over their duties. By 1780 almost all major remedies incorporated the use of Opium in some capacity and with the huge supply, it was incredibly cheap.
https://preview.redd.it/1cspu1ukjw4b1.png?width=578&format=png&auto=webp&s=4e81b6d401a1806f39592e802b0bd5ab6df9a2e8 - Poppy wasn’t only important to the British for its medicinal properties but also to bolster the huge amount of loss they were incurring in global trade to one trade partner—China. After she made contact with China in the mid-1500s, Britain starting to import HUGE amounts of tea as the Brits became literally addicted to the substance. By 1800 a full 15% of the ENTIRE British Empire’s revenue was being spent on importing tea, that’s 30 million pounds per YEAR, leading to a massive trade deficit. This means that more money was being sent to China literally enriching a foreign country while the British public was getting their fix on the black stuff. Oh and just in case you think things haven’t changed, Britain still accounts for 42.6% of the world’s tea consumption—seriously Brits, ever heard of coffee? Anyways, all this money leaving the British economy to be spent on non-Empire sustaining commodities was a major national security risk for the British. It would be different if they were importing gunpowder like the Dutch were or Silver as the Spanish had but literally they were consuming the riches they were spending the money on.
- Remember too that the British were not in the best position by the turn of the 19th century—they had just lost their colonies in the Americas, involvement in the Napoleonic Wars killed a generation of men, and the push to develop industries over public health led to a focus on fast growth rather than smart growth. One of the results of the Napoleonic Wars was the British occupation of the Island of Java which developed a very potent Opium which was traded with Chinese merchants regularly. Soon British merchants realized they could rebalance the trade deficit by selling Javanese Opium into China but the small island was unable to produce enough Poppies to meet the demand. So Britain turned to another one of its colonies, India.
https://preview.redd.it/iiu2j8emjw4b1.png?width=707&format=png&auto=webp&s=d6f54a00fe47739db6545be913c186e4560195d4 - India by the end of the 1700s was a bit of a challenge. The British hold on the subcontinent was firm but they couldn’t grow the cash crops they wanted. Indian cotton was nothing compared to Egyptian or Southern American (i.e. Virginia/North Carolina/Georgia) cotton and the Indian tobacco was known for being bitter. But by the 1770s the British government realized that Poppy was an easy crop to grow and the demand across the border with China was an easy market; British traders brought their cargo to small islands off the coast of China where it was sold for silver. Initially the Chinese didn’t mind the sale of Opium in their territory—when the British traders collected the silver from the sale they would almost immediately use it to buy Chinese goods, thus driving tax revenue for the Chinese government.
https://preview.redd.it/andjwt0qjw4b1.png?width=644&format=png&auto=webp&s=730782fa74a65c111a62f05024445656b81f9811 - But if you buy Opium, people are going to use that Opium. By the 1810s all trade with foreigners was restricted to just one port, Canton, and slowly the city started to develop a habit for the drug. The use of mind altering substances was curtailed pretty quickly for hundreds of years in China—the Ming Dynasty banned tobacco in 1640 and the Qing banned Madak (a powdered Opium containing tobacco) was similarly banned in 1729. But by 1790 more and more Chinese citizens were becoming addicted to the substance; what started as a recreational drug slowly became a crippling addiction that took hold over Canton. For a rigid society, the crippling Opiate addiction was a moral corruption for the Qing government and forced them to curtail Opium importation in 1780 and then an outright ban in 1796.
https://preview.redd.it/mw9oflprjw4b1.png?width=879&format=png&auto=webp&s=5640d0bc425726fbd471b8dcf8954222afc49fc5 - Knowing just how devastating the Opium was having on the inhabitants of Canton, as well as how it spread further inland, British merchants kept peddling their drug. Older ships with larger hulls were converted into floating warehouses and parked just outside of navigable waters. Once set up, Opium smugglers would pull up, purchase the Opium and avoid any oversight by the Chinese government to prevent the sale of the drug. Following their mother country, American merchants started to sell Turkish Opium, an inferior variety, at a much cheaper rate leading to drug peddling competition with more and more tons of Opium being sent into China. This drove down the price of Opium considerably which ultimately increased the demand.
- This demand eventually led to reversal of trade, meaning that more silver was leaving China to pay for Opium than the British were using to pay for Chinese goods. American and European traders could show up in Canton with holds full of Opium, sell it off for a profit, and then make a tidy silver profit to bring back to Europe. Likewise the importation of cheap machine-made cotton, furs, clocks, and steel into China driving down domestic profits.
Let’s Look at the Drugs a Bit https://preview.redd.it/y4uwbc1tjw4b1.png?width=548&format=png&auto=webp&s=71f79278925a92ea052d1ae390a495f0496966b2 https://preview.redd.it/pf709wmujw4b1.png?width=918&format=png&auto=webp&s=91cdf3fdd56db4beb95f07f340d24bb7ef7e9cf3 Stepping away from the history a bit, let’s introduce the Family. Okay so we understand how pain is sent to the brain and how it modulates but there is so much more to the mu Opioid Receptor and that’s not the only kind of Opioid receptor that we have. The two most clinically useful receptors are the Mu and Kappa Opioid Receptors (KOR) because they result in analgesia but there is a Delta Opioid Receptor (DOR) that is worth mentioning. The majority of the Opiates that we know and love are Mu agonists but there are some very interesting Kappa agonists that are worth mentioning as well. https://preview.redd.it/eg9toikwjw4b1.png?width=587&format=png&auto=webp&s=027d16b15bd7e195205513a3034eb5610ba88537 - Above is a chart that shows the binding affinities of select Opiates to the Mu receptor. The smaller the number is, the more tightly they bond. Now affinity is different than potency—potency is a measure of how much drug (in g) is required to produce the same effect. So even though morphine has a higher affinity than fentanyl, fentanyl has a MUCH more potent effect (which is why it can be so dangerous, you only need a little). Now many of the opiates cause the same effect so I want to spend more time on what makes them all so different:
- First up we have the 5-Ring Morphinians which are derived from the natural product Morphine. These structures have 5 component parts: an aromatic benzene ring (A), a completely saturated bridge ring (B), a partially unsaturated ring with an alcohol attachment (C), a piperidine heterocycle above the rest of the structure (D) and finally a ether linkage between the top and bottom of the structure to keep it fairly rigid (E). Truthfully we are only going to focus on two locations—firstly the top alcohol (red circle) can be methylated to form Codeine, a natural Prodrug of Morphine. A Prodrug is one that is biologically inactive but goes through an initial metabolism once ingested that makes it active.
https://preview.redd.it/hx3zwwcyjw4b1.png?width=725&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf238a61c14c183cf081da027074a3eb1a11b1f0 - In fact it’s this initial metabolism of Codeine that makes it very interesting. In order for Codeine to exert any pain relief it needs to be converted to Morphine which actually exerts the desirable properties. This is done by the liver enzyme CYP2D6 which is a pretty minor pathway for Codeine—only about 10% of the Codeine is actually converted to Morphine to have some action. Because of this 2D6 dependent pathway we have to be careful about administering drugs that might inhibit the 2D6 pathway because that would mean we are preventing codeine from being active. Drugs like Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Paroxetine (Paxil) are strong 2D6 inhibitors and so if we administered Codeine to someone taking this drug they’d never get any benefit from the Codeine. In addition there are genetic/ethnic differences that pharmacists can account for such as 2D6 activity. If you are someone with very little 2D6 activity then you would also not convert Codeine to Morphine and thus get no action from the drug—this may be a reason why some people say Codeine doesn’t work for them. Another reason could be that they are Rapid Metabolizers and quickly convert the Codeine to Morphine and thus get a massive hit quickly after ingestion—in that cause you’d need a much smaller dose than another person for the same effect.
https://preview.redd.it/cvbelexfkw4b1.png?width=919&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed6f1683761a69b87bd0de12834a76c1f089a31f - A different drug that is the opposite of Codeine is Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) which has a Ketone on ring C. This ketone and the lack of the double bond on this ring increases the lipophilicity of the drug and increases its ability to penetrate into the brain and thus have a greater effect. In fact Hydromorphone is 5-10x more potent than Morphine due to its greater ability to penetrate into the brain and increased receptor affinity for the mu receptor. Because the A ring OH is not capped with a methyl group, we don’t need to rely on 2D6 to metabolize Hydromorphone into an active drug form which again increases the activity of this drug compared to Codeine.
- So combine these two structural changes—the capped OH on ring A as seen in Codeine and the increased affinity found with the ketone in Hydromorphone and we get Hydrocodone (Norco, Lorcet). Well in this case you’d get a drug that has very good affinity for the mu receptor (better than codeine) BUT is still reliant on the small 2D6 pathway for activation (worse than morphine). In this regard only about 10% of Hydrocodone is active at a time. We can see this effect in the relative doses for equivalent effect: to match the effect of 30mg of Morphine, we’d need only 7.5mg of Hydromorphone (more active) but need 200mg of Codeine (less active).
https://preview.redd.it/la2oqttgkw4b1.png?width=845&format=png&auto=webp&s=0155a6506a5038a6dad7987572a8eabaab75205a - This brings us to our last drug of this class, Oxycodone which has a special OH group found on Ring B. What you’ll notice is that Oxycodone has that capped OH on ring A so it requires metabolism through 2D6 just like Codeine and Hydrocodone. When it is uncapped it becomes Oxymorphone which has 3 times as much effect as Morphine BUT that extra OH makes Oxycodone an exclusive Mu receptor agonist. Unlike the other drugs which may go to other receptors causing side effects (more on this later).
https://preview.redd.it/ftdg9l8jkw4b1.png?width=489&format=png&auto=webp&s=e2ceeb6172294b69574f5b929d0a218f481c7e41 https://preview.redd.it/yos35mojkw4b1.png?width=677&format=png&auto=webp&s=0e72e94694147c303defe123d88b048e6ca3369a - Next up I want to look at some Mu opioid receptor Antagonists or those than inhibit the function of the opioid receptor. Looking at the first two drugs, Naloxone and Naltrexone, we can see that they have the structure similar to Hydromorphone so they would have incredible brain penetration and affinity for opioid receptors BUT they contain that funky Nitrogen tail. Now normally there is a short methyl tail that is required for the function of Morphine but by adding a bulkier tail the drug is able to fit inside the receptor but prevent activation. What’s most important about these two drugs is that they have much more affinity for the receptor than other opiates. We can see this effect in the graph above: when no Naloxone is present, Fentanyl occupies the opiate receptor about 75% of the time. But as soon as Naloxone is administered that number drops swiftly (within minutes)--this is because Naloxone has a higher affinity for sitting in the receptor than Fentanyl. Think of it like the bully Naloxone coming up and pushing the poor defenseless Fentanyl off the swings so the bully can play on it (except in this instance Fentanyl is causing an overdose and we need to save someone’s life).
https://preview.redd.it/61dx2mwokw4b1.png?width=594&format=png&auto=webp&s=4740b8395ca83304d5e0a756004b119976c621f2 - Buprenorphine is similar but it is a Partial Agonist instead of being a full antagonist. Buprenorphine is not a 5-ring Morphinian byt a 6-ring Oripavine that has a few different modifications. The biggest additions is that it has the bulky Nitrogen tail found in full Antagonists but it has this funky C ring tail which fights the antagonism. The result is a tug of war between the antagonism of the Nitrogen tail and the agonism of this new C-ring tail resulting in Partial agonism—so if you took Buprenorphine you’d notice a markedly decreased pain relieving ability but importantly there is a ceiling effect, its much harder to overdose on Buprenorphine than other full agonists. In addition in the second graph we can see that Buprenorphine has the greatest affinity for the receptor than our other agonists which prevents someone from taking a more potent opiate while taking Buprenorphine. In this case the bully is already sitting on the swing and scaring away the other kids thus preventing them from having a turn (and potentially causing an overdose). This does mean that if someone was taking a more potent drug (like Fentanyl) and then took Buprenorphine, it would cause withdrawal just like Naloxone or Naltrexone.
https://preview.redd.it/x9wcb8xqkw4b1.png?width=912&format=png&auto=webp&s=d09a59a927363d3864eebfd29cb05215e9f0234b - Speaking of withdrawal, let’s take a look at how that happens. Remember that the pain signal is caused by the activation of AMPA and NMDA receptors from the peripheral nerve. AMPA is a type of receptor called a G-Protein Coupled Receptor or GPCR which in this case is linked to an Excitatory G-protein which leads to the activation of the nerve. When AMPA is activated, the G-protein (Ga) activates an enzyme called Adenylate Cyclase (AC) which increases the production of pro-activity cAMP—or in simpler terms—when AMPA is activated, it leads to an increase in levels of pro-pain molecule cAMP. The Opioid receptor is also a GPCR but it is linked to an inhibitory G-protein which prevents the action of Adenylate Cyclase and thus leads to a decrease in cAMP levels. So Opiates prevent pro-pain cAMP signaling from continuing.
- In the second graph we can see how tolerance forms. Initially (A), Adenylate Cyclase and cAMP levels are not affected by having opiates even though their ability to push along the pain signal is blocked. After a few hours, the leftover cAMP is degraded and cAMP levels start to drop significantly (B). In response to these levels going down, the activity of Adenylate Cyclase starts to increase and increase (C) which raises the level of cAMP. This rise in Adenylate Cyclase activity opposes the action of the opiate which necessitates the need for increased doses of Opiates and is why tolerance forms. As sustained inhibition of Adenylate Cyclase continues, the body upregulates Adenylate Cyclase activity to create more cAMP and to combat this we increase the dose.
- Now what if after years of taking an Opiate we suddenly administer Naloxone, an Opiate antagonist. Well after weeks to months of taking an Opiate, the level of Adenylate Cyclase activity is WAY above baseline. When you administer the antagonist, suddenly Adenylate Cyclase is able to produce a TON of cAMP that normally is blocked which leads to a MASSIVE amount of downstream signaling. The result is intense nausea and vomiting, stomach cramps, fever, anxiety, insomnia, and cravings. Thankfully the withdrawal process ends after about 72 hours but is one of the worst experiences someone can go through which is why proper down-tapering of Opiates is extremely important.
A Change in Trade Policy https://preview.redd.it/bb4eb0ltkw4b1.png?width=628&format=png&auto=webp&s=321048bd5d5edf8877aede887c3fcb7aa387a0e4 Oh, you’re still here. Neat! So by the 1820s the Qing dynasty was running into many problems regarding Opium. Firstly they needed the Opium taxes to fund their efforts to put down the White Lotus Rebellion and retain power. But after almost 30 years of trade the effects on Chinese communities could not be ignored along with local officials operating under the imperial trade department, the Hong, profiting from bribes to allow Opium. Regardless of initial efforts things were getting out of hand for the Qing government. In 1800, about 4000 chests of Opium or 560,000 pounds entered the country but by 1830 that number exploded to 20,000 chests or about 3 million pounds. But more than the amount of Opium actually entering the country was the incessant rudeness of the British government to open trade. - One of the “problems” for the British traders was how clamped down trade was with China. By 1800 all trade was limited to just Canton and the Hong was a strict master of trade. Foreigners were not allowed to appeal decisions made by the Hong and only Chinese traders could sell goods further inland than Canton. Traders chafed against this extreme oversight and sent hundreds of letters to the Hong requesting special dispensations which were summarily denied. Things changed significantly in 1834 when the Chinese trade was de-monopolized away from the East India Company allowing any private trader to get involved in the Eastern trade.
https://preview.redd.it/cvbkq7vukw4b1.png?width=669&format=png&auto=webp&s=9340d153989a2f8c32a72792554f86be77e1f4eb - In August of 1834, the British sent Lord William John Napier to Macau as superintendent of Chinese trade with the explicit order to follow all Chinese regulations. Thinking he knows best, Napier decided that the restrictive Chinese trade system was too restrictive and sent a letter to the Viceroy of Canton. This was unheard of—NO foreign traders were allowed to speak directly with Chinese officials and the Viceroy refused to accept it. So why not double down by ordering two British ships to BOMBARD two Pearl River forts as a show of force? Luckily Napier died of Typhus almost directly after else it would have resulted in a full blown war.
- In 1839 the Qing government appointed Lin Zexu as the Opium czar to completely eradicate the Opium trade from China. Lin banned the sale of Opium in China completely, set up rehabilitation centers for those affected by the drug, and put addicts to work to distract them while detoxing. Lin demanded that all Opium supplies must be surrendered to Qing authorities and any Chinese citizen disobeying the order would be punishable by death. He even went as far as closing the Pearl River Channel, trapping British traders in Canton and seizing their Opium warehouse stockpiles.
- The replacement for Napier was Admiral Sir Charles Elliot who protested the seizure of the Opium stockpile but knew that they could do nothing. He ordered all Opium ships to flee and prepare for battle which caused Lin Zexu to beseige a group of traders inside a Canton warehouse. Elliot convinced the traders to cooperate with the Chinese government and surrender their stock, saying that the British government would compensate for the lost Opium (which he had no authority to do). During April and May 1839 the British (and American) traders to surrender 20,000 chests of Opium which was burned for three days outside Canton. Following the burning, trade resumed to normal except no more Opium was allowed. Like many other instances of the government removing legitimate sale of a drug, the black market increased markedly.
- In July 1839 a new scandal rocked the British-Chinese trade system; two British sailors became drunk and beat a man death outside of his village. In response, Superintendent Elliot arrested the two men and paid compensation to the villager’s family for the loss of the man but Elliot refused to hand over the sailors to the Qing government. Lin Zexu saw this as a blatant disregard for Chinese law—afterall traders needed to understand that they can’t just come to China and violate Chinese law as they saw fit. Elliot offered to hold a trial on a British ship in front of Chinese officials to show that the men would not get off free. This incident would start the smoldering.
- On September 4th, Elliot sent two ships to Kowloon to buy food and provisions from Chinese peasants. While approaching the harbor, three Chinese war junks gave permission to the two British ships to trade but that permission was rescinded by the commander of Kowloon fort. Elliot fumed against the slight and said that if the British were not allowed to trade by 3pm, he would fire on the fort. 3pm passed and the British opened fire on the fort causing the Chinese junks to return fire. The fighting continued for 7 hours until nightfall and Elliot had to prevent the British officers from pressing the attack, thus ending the Battle of Kowloon. Having driven off the Chinese ships, the British purchased the supplies they needed while the Kowloon commander claimed that both ships were sunk and 50 British sailors killed.
- The reaction in Britain was about as much as you expect. Prime Minister Palmerston sent out letters to the Governor General of India to prepare marines to invade China and another letter to the Chinese Emperor telling him that Britain would send a military force. He sent a letter to Superintendent Elliot to set up a blockade on the Pearl River and capture Chusan Island. He also instructed Elliot to accomplish the following objectives:
- Demand the respect as a British envoy from the Qing Government.
- Secure the right for British law to be doled out on British subjects
- Get recompense for destroyed British property, especially the illegal drugs that they destroyed
- And most important, End the Canton System thus opening up China to free trade for the first time, ever.
Alright this is where we will leave things off for now, on the brink of war with China. Stay tuned! submitted by Bubzoluck to SAR_Med_Chem [link] [comments] |

Hey
zen, it is good to be making OPs again, ngl.
And thank you very much for all the engagement on my last post. It felt very good to get some content up, and bring some conversation to the table after an extended absence. (Now hopefully Reddit can find some solution for this 3rd party app kerfuffle. I’m not sure I’m ready for tech platform Ragnarok just yet–when there’s so much zen to study these days!)
Anyway, in my previous post, I mentioned that I was splitting my look at the case (BCR 15) into two posts. I feel like it was worth doing in this case—partially because I often feel that we never look at the actual BCR in this forum, because it makes for such long OPs to try and grapple with Yuanwu's entire commentary. (And I do personally find Zen Master Yuanwu's commentary to be a key component of the book that Zen Master Yuanwu wrote for us, and am more than a little leary of the chopping-block treatment that it often receives in this forum.)
Anyway, this two part post is an attemp to address this issue. There were too many themes, or too much that was worth looking at, to fit it all in one post. "Why not just cut off at about the point where I used to fall asleep while reading BCR cases?" the thought suddenly occurred to me. "That would seem to make a lot of sense, if that's what my original reading experiences themselves were like!"
(Et voilá—the prototype BCR two-parter is born in a golden flash! ⚡️)
This way all of you who read the fist post have already had time to sleep on it–a mechanism and process I do not find at all trivial when it comes to reading and literary analysis.
Anyway, here is part II. I filmed a new video for it, in which I read and look at the central part of the commentary, the part that caught my.eye for this go around—but first, let's look at the text.
Oh wait, also—I have some potentially bad news. That moose and calf I ran into the other day and tood you about? My gardening teacher just told me that he heard a brown bear had taken a moose calf up on our hill somewhere. Likely hers, he thought. (She resides in and is very active in our corner of the neighborhood.) This is just awful to hear. (in more ways than one. Hearing a brown bear kill a moose calf is bar none the worst thing one can hear that I have ever heard. Seriously it is the
worst thing you can hear.)
I hope it was a different moose. I just looked her in the eye like a week ago. It's natural...but it is very unpleasant to hear about moose calfs being taken and / or see the aftereffect (bereaved moose). It's pretty savage out here, sadly. I'm not sure if it was her, and I won't know until I get eyes on her again, but just a heads up that that particular moose, who was so instrumental to the video from last week and the experience I related, might have suffered something truly awful. Hopefully not. Hopefully I see her calf with her, and it turns out to be a misplaced rumor that's really about an entirely different moose. I'll be sure to let ya'll know when I find out.
(Sorry if that seemed discursive, but that moose did star in some
Zen content and conversation in a way, and if she suffered a tragedy I felt it was worth sharing.)
Anyway,
now to the text.
If you remember, we left off after the verse. Afterward, Yuanwu spends some time blowing hot air up Hsou Tou's skirt, and then has this to say about Yun Men:
If Yun Men were not someone whose whole capacity had penetrated through to liberation, how could he die with you and be born with you? Why can he do this? Because he is free from the many leaking points of gain and loss, of is and is not.
Ngl, being free from gain and loss sounds pretty nifty. I wonder if Yuanwu has more to say about these "leaking points"–if so, that seems like it could be pretty useful.
Thus Tung Shan said, “If you would judge whether one going beyond is genuine or false, there are three kinds of leakage: emotional leakage, leakage of views, and verbal leakage. If there is leakage of views, the intellect does not stir from its fixed position and falls into the poisonous sea. If feelings leak, knowing always turns towards and against, and one’s view is biased. Verbal leakage embodies the marvel but loses the fundamental; the intellect confuses beginning and end. You should know these three leaks for yourself.
These leakage points really caught my eye. I spent quite a bit of time contemplating them and looking at them myself and for them in myself. They make a lot of sense to me. Don't they make sense, though? I also find the term "leakage point" very useful, because it allows one to see these phenomena in a practical way, as something real and observable but also simple, grapple-able, addressable. Yuanwu? A fella that could write!
There are also three mysteries; the mystery within the essence, the mystery within the phrase, and the mystery within the mystery.b When the Ancients came into this realm, their whole capacity was fully used: if you happened to be born, they would be born together with you; if you happened to die, they would die with you. They stretched out their bodies in the tiger’s mouth; letting go their hands and feet, they would follow your lead for a thousand miles, for ten thousand miles. Why? You must go back with them to get this one realization before you’ll understand.
I like it that he mentions the mysteries, then doesn't try to explain them! More about the Ancients being "born with you and dying with you"—honestly I think this is a very interesting subject these days, and I'm already considering more content on the subject. Anyone else find this an interesting conversation? To me it seens to be highly relevant at the moment.
The image "stretching out in the tiger's mouth" is pretty cool, as is this description of just how far they will go for you. Makes "going back with them" sound supremely worth it, does it not?
And now for some fun literary content. I love it when Yuanwu does shit like this!
As for “Eighty-four thousand disciples of Buddha were not phoenix feathers,” this is the assembly of eighty-four thousand holy people on Vulture Peak of Spirit Mountain—they were not phoenix feathers.c The Southern History relates that in Sung times (420–479) there lived Hsieh Ch’ao-tsung (“surpassing his clan”), a man of Yang Hsia in Ch’en prefecture, the son of Hsieh Feng (“phoenix”). He had studied widely and his literary talent was superlative. At court there was no one to equal him; his contemporaries considered him unique. Since he was skilled in the written word, he served as permanent attendant at the capital. For the funeral ceremonies of the king’s mother Yinshu, Ch’ao-tsung composed a eulogy and presented it at court. Emperor Wu saw what he had written and praised him highly, saying, “Ch’ao-tsung does indeed have phoenix feathers!”
An old poem says,
Audiences over, the incense smoke fills his billowing sleeves;
In the perfection of a poem, the perfect jewel lies in the stroke of his brushtip.
If you want to know the excellence of the hereditary managers of Imperial decrees,
On the pond right now there’s a phoenix feather floating.
Translator's Note:
c Phoenix feather is a metaphor for someone of outstanding talent, and also for a worthy successor.
The Blue Cliff Record Thomas Cleary & J.C. Cleary
You know it's gonna be good when a Zen Master heads to vulture peak on spirit mountain. (Seriously. As a literati, my literary senses activate like the AI in Ironman's suit everytime Vulture Peak is mentioned!) I'm glad Cleary included the note about phoenix feathers...he transmits an awful lot of information to readers of the book, that's for sure. As the western economy continues to collapse, there will likely be millions and millions of more people who actually have the time to read again—and I certainly think Cleary is well positioned to get the Zen Masters into a lot of those eyes.
I’ve already released dozens of his books into the wild, but if I get the opportunity at some point I’d like to realize an operation to distribute them to all the small towns in Alaska. (Take that
zenners—you have to spend decades arguing publicly on the internet to get Zen texts out there—while we slacker hermits can cover an entire state / century with a couple thousand bucks and one or two days on Amazon—now
that is some efficiency!)
Oh gosh. Now here
I am blowing hot air up a dead guy's skirt. How embarrassing. Thanks Yuanwu—apparently your literary fawning is transmissable through time and space!
That poem was something else, though. This line?
If you want to know the excellence of the hereditary managers of Imperial decrees,
Literally out of this world!
I cannot stress enough what a good poem this is. Seriously—Yuanwu is not a fucking joke. This was a masterful selection, in my opinion. I’m not sure how many
zen readers are reading commentary like this, by the time they are this far into it—perhaps they are more focused on doctrine and ideas like many seem to be in
zen posts and comments—but does anyone else receive the absolute literary
flooring that is on offer here? Like a sword run straight down through the top of your head, piercing your right eye, and poking out beneath your jaw?
I guess what I’m saying is that, sometimes, it is hard to have the conversation with Yuanwu that I want to have with him as a Zen literati. (Oops…did that sproing a few sockets out there in readerland? “Zen literari”? “Literati who studies Zen” just sounds so clunky! Don’t panic—I won’t let it go to my head.) Thankfully,
zen exists, which has provided me with a venue where I actually
can have that conversation with Yuanwu, as easy as pie.
And this is one of those times I want to point at what a rich and detailed object Yuanwu has in fact handed us through the centuries, like a jade goldfish we can swallow, slip into our ear, entertain in our fishbowls—or even flush down our toilet! (For those of us lucky enough to have indoor plumbing, anyway. The fate of deep rural goldfish is a grimmer one, this hermit can personally assure you.)
But anyway, just look at that poem Yuanwu snuck us, zennists. A deft stroke. Highly enjoyable. Like a phoenix feather floating on a pond.
And gosh I just love that metaphor: the “phoenix feather” meaning a “successor”. Neat-O Mosquito! (Linseed: it’s mosquito season and I just got back from duck taping the holes in my windows!)
Okay, and so the end of Yuanwu’s commentary is just so gosh darned good that I wanted to read it to you myself. So the video part of the content starts here. The part that grabs me about this selection is the qualities and the description of the Teacher (based on seeing Yun Men in the case) that both Yuanwu and Cleary lay out for us together, hand in hand, right hear in this book. So that’s the bit to pay attention to—or at least it’s the bit that
I was really paying attention to.
First, I do tell a story, one about two hermits, and how I learned I could pilfer from another hermit in my neighborhood using nothing but chopsticks. And not just run-of-the-mill theivery, either—a real heist! I was talkkng to Mr Algood about “pilferers who pilfer from pillferers who pilfer” the ofher day, and mentioned that it was “best hermit past time.” This is also the same truth that underlies most if not all literary work. Mr Algood said: “If you need it, it’s just trading,” which is certainly a valid take. My response, offered to him now, is: “And if they’re dead—that’s a waiver!”
So the little story I tell is a comment on Yuanwu / Hsou Tou, Thomas and JC Cleary—and even the practice of all of us here (or some of us) strudying Zen together in this literary medium otherwise known as “r zen”.
But then I get to the important stuff. The stuff I am interested in looking at.
The Seven Items Of A Teacher. The Tyrannosaur & The GOAT.
Ain't those seven items something, though? Don't they give us something to ponder?
Guess which of the seven is my favorite?
The freedom to appear and disappear. Always has been.
Thanks for reading!
(And let’s hope that moose calf is okay.)

2023.06.09 03:41 HokageEzio Debunking the Whitebeard scar theory (Chapter 1086)
With the debut of Garland Figarland, many people are theorizing about his role in the God Valley Incident.
And a bunch of people are running with the theory that he scarred Whitebeard. Although it is a cool theory and would be a really well done bit of foreshadowing if the person Whitebeard referred to when he met Shanks is Chapter 434 was Garling, the theory does not really work if you put the timeline together.
Let's start with Whitebeard's scars.
He has 3 scars; an L shaped scar, an X on his left chest, and a scar right down the middle.
For starters, the conversation Roger and Whitebeard had after he became Pirate King. Roger and Whitebeard talked over sake cups, and we can see that Whitebeard definitely does not have the big L shaped scar on his right side is not there. In the anime when this panel took place the only scar Whitebeard had was the one down the middle, but obviously not going to use that as concrete evidence of anything.
This panel from the fight also gives us a pretty solid look at the right side of Whitebeard's chest, and not a sign of an L scar anywhere. Go back further to his duel with Roger.
Here is Roger, Whitebeard, and Oden talking after the fight. Whitebeard clearly does not have the scar yet in the middle of his chest. And we know that the scar could not have come from God Valley, because Shanks was an infant at that point. Shanks and Buggy are little cabin boys when this fight took place, so confirmed not the middle scar either.
And while there's not a very clear look at the left side of his chest that I can find from the Oden flashback, I think we'd be stretching a lot to say that it's there considering how far it goes over into the middle of his chest (well past his pecs)
Not here on the cover.
Not here either with a pretty good look at his shirt pretty far open. TL;DR
It's a fun theory, but it would require some serious retconning if Figarland gave Whitebeard one of his 3 prominent chest scars. Consider this effectively debunked.

2023.06.09 03:40 Adventurous-Ear9433 Why Mercury, mica, pyrite were found at Teotihuacan, 'local traditions of 'magician-Priest',Genetic Evidence for Founding Populations of Americas
Teotihuacan was built on a geodetic grid system (a power center) in perfect sacred geometrical alignment with the cosmos to harness the energy of earth and sky. To understand it, we must go back to the original truth of the purpose. advanced design of Teotihuacan suggests that ancient builders had knowledge, not only of architecture, but of complex mathematical and astronomical sciences. The term 'Teohuacan' was found inscribed halfway across the globe on monuments in China, the term means 'place of the sun'(*our translation is 'Place to tie up the sun)Mercury, Hermes was the great Messenger, which also speaks for the planets quick trips around the sun. An aerial view shocked many researchers, but following the traditions we know what every pyramid was used for.
Circuit Board-Teohuatican with two large processor chips— the Sun Pyramid and the Moon Pyramid. . One of the most interesting things about Teotihuacan is the finding by archaeologists of the extensive use of mica embedded in numerous structures. This mineral is found 3,000 miles away in Brazil and it is found in all buildings, housing complexes, temples and along the roads so basically this mineral is all over Teotihuacan.
The pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan contained considerable amounts of mica in layers up to 30 cm. Human use of mica dates back to prehistoric times. Mica was known to ancient Indian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman andChinese civilizations, as well as the Aztec civilization of the New World. The earliest use of mica has been found in cave paintings created during the Upper Paleolithic period (40,000 BC to 10,000 BC). The ancient civilizations & their inexplicable similarities are only shocking when one has disregarded our ancestors traditions as 'mythical ', which is a mistake made by academics only recently.
Mica is stable when exposed to electricity, light, moisture, and extreme temperatures. It has superior electrical properties as an insulator and as a dielectric, and can support an electrostatic field while dissipating minimal energy in the form of heat; it can be split very thin (0.025 to 0.125 millimeters or thinner) while maintaining its electrical properties, has a high dielectric breakdown, is thermally stable to 500 °C, and is resistant to corona discharge. Muscovite, the principal mica used by the electrical industry, is used in capacitors that are ideal for high frequency and radio frequency. Phlogopite mica remains stable at higher temperatures (to 900 °C) and is used in applications in which a combination of high-heat stability and electrical properties is required. Muscovite and phlogopite are used in sheet and ground forms.
The Maya Codex Vaticanus records faithfully the very ancient oral traditions of Central America. In one curious passage it states that “in the First Age, giants existed in that country(Mexico). "These 7 who escaped from a deluge , arrive in Cholula and there began to build a tower… in order that should a deluge come again he might escape to it.” Nahuatl language it’s named Tlachihualtepetl (‘artificial mountain’). Originally it was named Acholollan (‘water that falls in the place of flight’).
-Olmec(Xi)-had two different religious associations (gya-fa):the jaguar-man or humano-feline cult and the humano-bird cult. The humano-feline cult was called the nama-tigi by the Olmecs, while the humano-feline cult was called the kuno-tigi..
Xoc Bas Birdman The Teotihuacan(
Tlalocan )mural depicts a range of mountains covered in rolling clouds and mists, below a brilliant red sky dominated by the huge figure of Tláloc, the Maya/Aztec god of celestial waters. Falling from Tláloc's open hands are flaming droplets of celestial water, likely representing the high-resonance isotope of protium, that overtly reference the ignition of celestial water vapor to form HHO plasma. The differentiation of celestial waters from terrestrial waters through the infrasonic evaporation of water vapor corresponds to special modern water purification processes involving the separation of resonant lightwater (protium) from dissonant heavy waters
deuterium & tritium The plumed headdress of Tláloc is comprised of radiating feathers of green and red hues, representing the colors of auroral plasma. Three arching red plumes stand out from the other green plumes of the headdress, extending from either side of the central figure and from the foreheads (pineal glands) of the two smaller figures in profile, representing the three frequencies of sound that generate nonlinear standing waves. Rising above the giant central figure of Tláloc is a majestic twisting Tree of Life image, composed of intertwining plumes of yellow/green and pink/red aerial HHO plasma that appear identical to modern photographs of the plasma discharges of red sprites.
Tláloc, God of Celestial Water, god of the vapor that rises, from the earth warmed by the sun after the rains, god of the mist that ascends from the valleys at dawn, god of the water that returns to its source in the clouds that swim over the highest peaks, god of the humid incense from which rise the copal prayers and the prayers of sacrifice Tláloc is the return of vapor that strains to rise, is the return of time that strains to remember. Tláloc, God of the Fight Against the Current, with whose aid the hero battles against the torrent toward his own origin and beginning, towards the wings of his soul, the wings that Tláloc hides in the hero's past The cycle of years is past - the waiting ended. Come - reunite, pilgrims, for the sky is in flames! From Xochicalco to Teotíhuacan the red spreads one step, another step, and another, only twelve short steps from the cave of the womb to the final conflagration The red skies depicted in the Teotihuacan mural are also directly referenced in the Pyramid of Fire Codex, when it states that "the sky will be in flames" that will spread from one pyamid to another, as the worldwide netwrok of pyramids and sacred sites become activated to bath the area in the brilliant infrared and ultraviolet-A light of aerial HHO plasma plumes.ancient, unknown science designed to create energy directed up is excavating the tunnel.
-The geoposition of Teotihuacan pyramid complex (19.68°N 98.83°W), reveals a nonlinear (or Fibonacci-based) resonant alignment with respect to the Great Pyramid of Giza, being 7,684 miles away or 30.9% of the Earth's mean circumference (of 24,892 miles)..which is also observed in the Paracas petroglyphs.
The Sanskrit descendant cultures of Asia express the same essential interpretation given by the Maya culture of Central America; identifying the planet Mercury as ‘the fast runner’ that takes ‘quick flight’ around the sun, having a short orbital period of approximately 88 days. Among Nahuatl cultures, the art of running was crucial to the functioning of society, enabling the rapid conveyance of messages over long distance.
Mercury is the link (messenger) between the gods (higher principles) and humankind. In the ancient art of alchemy, such as in Hermeticism, Mercury, sulfur, and salt were the Earth's three principle substances that represent the trinity in creation. As sulphur is the symbol for the active principle, mercury is the symbol of the passive principle. The symbol of Mercury is the cosmic womb being incubated by the cross of the four elements of creation - earth, air, fire and water. Mercury is the messenger in Astrology as it is in mythology. It is the planet of day-to-day expression and communication. Mercury's action is to take things apart and put them back together again. It is an opportunistic planet, decidedly unemotional and curious. Mercury not only rules communication, it represents coordination. Thought processes, ideas, and sensory information from both unconscious and unconscious sources all need to be coordinated and understood.
Ive said before that the mercury was used to accomplish communication wth the Gods, The fluid metal element mercury was extolled as generating the luminosity of the blood of gods, for its threefold biophotonic extension of human longevity, whereby adepts of the alchemical arts were able to attain long lifespans. Mercury was closely associated with its extreme volatility, which must be carefully controlled to achieve positive results. Mercury was considered an ethereal element for its low boiling point of 357°C. When heated above this temperature, quicksilver will rapidly vaporize as toxic fumes inspiring an association with quick flight: ‘mercury has wings’.
A number of the Mesoamerican pyramids there are key components designed into their construction that act as magnifiers. These components appear to be important in the creation, magnification, and distribution of telluric fields.
Pyramid & Scalar WavesEarly Irrigation of Teotihuacan Provenance od Limestone used in Teotihuacan Identification of Pyrite & Hematite • Water, either moving naturally including rivers or cenotes (found at El Castillo at Chichen Itza) or by artificial canals or tunnels, similar to the Temple of Inscription found at Palenque.)
• Geo-magnetic fields. Naturally formed telluric fields that have high and low period throughout day and night.
• Pyramid design. The specific pyramid shape appears to greatly enhance the telluric fields that pulse up and into the center of the chamber.
• Pyramid interior fill. At a number of pyramids, rocks that are good electromagnetic conductors fill the interior of the pyramids and are used to enhance the pulsing field. Rocks that have veins with quartz, granite, and other electrical conducting properties appear to be favored.
Characterization of lime carbonates in plasters from Teotihuacan, Mexico: preliminary results of cathodoluminescence and carbon isotope analyses Dr Burke &Dr Brooker research determined that each location had been chosen because of its naturally occurring telluric energy field that pulsed up and into the structure or surrounding area. Also Burke and his research partner Kaj Halberg discovered electro-magnetic signatures that measured impressive charges on top of the pyramid. In a series of scans, the readings showed an average change of 908 volts over a short period of time, which was concentrated in the early morning hours. As ive stated in the past, this is the ideal time for sungazing. The pineal, contains magnetite & creates its own magnetic field. This was once a universal practice at Sacred sites, in 2009 until Nov 2012 The grand maya council held 52 full moon ritual of the new cycle where we visited sacred sites around the world and brought back these rituals. Burke mentions the readings and states, “These voltages might sound lethal and if it were a household current they could be. However, static electric charge in the air is a different type of electricity and even a thousand volts is not dangerous.” His discovery of pyramid field generation is fascinating, but what he actually uncovered was a means of generating and perhaps distributing electromagnetic energy within a pyramid complex. Which aligns with the term used for the ancient Egyptians, the Great PrNtr-house of Nature, or house of energy).
Stanford edu-Native American & Polynesian population The
Genetic Evidence for 2 founding populations has constantly confirmed our traditions, the idea of independent invention is absolute nonsense. Theres an overwhelming amount of evidence, "believe" is a term unfamiliar to Dogon culture & ive yet to see the point in such a thing. If preconceived biases have clouded the minds of the majority, and they ignore evidence thats their fault. The age of the Fourth Sun, the Age of the Black Headed People (Aztec), or the Age of Heroes (Inca). This is the era in which Quetzalcoatl appeared in Mexico -- tall of stature, bright of countenance, bearded, and wearing a long tunic. His staff, shaped like a serpent, was painted black, white, and red [reminiscent of American Indians' mythology of three races of Man]. The staff was inlaid with precious stones and adorned with six stars.
-Between the 14th and 16th centuries during the Aztec era, Quetzalcoatl was worshipped as the patron of priests, the inventor of books and the calendar, as well as the protector of goldsmiths and other craftsmen..Shamanism, was invented in west Africa & brought to the Mesoamerican civilizations. The Aztec oral traditions say that
Quetzalcoatl & his followers brought these beliefs ,and came from the East across the oceans. This is now corroborated by genetic, skeletal remains, artifacts, you name it. Quetzalcoatl was just a High Priest of Anu. The Gold tipped spears,or as Columbus calls it ' guanin 'to the Indians of Hispaniola. Samples of which sent back to Spain on a mail boat, and the proportion was found to be identical to what was being forged in African Guinea.
Moche Reed BoatThe Xi(Olmec) were a mix of a Polynesian/Oceanic elite aristocratic people accompanied by priests of the Orisha(Yoruba)/Mende(MalinkeBambara)responsible for introducing the religious practices and astronomical worship of the Mother Goddess complex (Venus, the Dogon Sirius observation and the Venus worship of the Olmecs, the use of the ax in the worship of Shango among he Yoruba of West Africa and the use of the ax in Olmec worship as well as the prominence of the thunder God later known as Tlalock among the Aztecs). It was R1b-V88(Yoruba) that were known as magicians to the Mayans & local Aymara over in Bolivia because of their knowledge of acoustics, which they have preserved from the Nile Valley (Anu colleges of Heliopolis).
Again, we see Toward the end of the Fourth Sun, wars between the gods were taking place. [The Battle of the Titans?] The gods' war brought havoc to the land; wild animals overran mankind, and Tollan was abandoned. The fourth Sun had begun 5,042 years before the time of the Codex Vaticano-Latino 3738 (1533). The time the Fourth Sun ended is not stated, but the Codex was written during the Fifth Sun. The Fourth Sun may have perished by means of the Jaguar. The Fifth Sun is referred to as the Age of Kings by the Incas.

Soft assorted timber (poplar, birch, fir, and so on) is 4000 kcal/kg. The low calorific value of straw pellets is 3000 ~ 3500 kcal/kg. Bean stalk, cotton stalk, peanut covering, and so on 3600 kcal/kg;. Corn stalk, rape stalk, and so on 3300 kcal/kg;. Wheat straw is 3200 kcal/kg;. Potato straw is 3100 kcal/kg;. Rice straw is 3000 kcal/kg. Related post: bagasse pellet mill 2. Biomass pellet mill is "carbon neutral tool". The EU is the first area on the planet to commit to low-carbon development. It has reached its carbon optimal as well as is relocating in the direction of carbon nonpartisanship. Its experience is worth picking up from. The EU's GDP accounts for 22.54% of the globe's overall, power usage make up 8%, and also carbon emissions account for 8.79% in the very same period. To achieve carbon neutrality in the power system, biomass-based renewable energy is used instead of fossil power. Judging from the general power structure of the 27 EU countries, biomass power make up 65% of renewable energy; from the point of view of carbon emission decrease, biomass power represent 43%, rating initially. The factor: Biomass energy made by biomass pellet mill is chemical power and also the only eco-friendly fuel that can be stored as well as moved. Dealing with diversified and also multi-period heating demands, biomass gas from the biofuel pellet equipment can be flexibly completely satisfied, and biomass resources are abundant as well as distributed. It is extensively used as well as affordable, and also it is more affordable than fossil power for heating. As an example, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland in north Europe have developed a affordable biomass energy sector chain based on a wide variety of farming as well as forestry wastes, and have actually become the biggest proportion of the energy market. https://preview.redd.it/tmxj5ul8cw4b1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bafb6e0511d2bf8d965097952b8abad836aa412e Biomass energy made by biomass pellet mill works with existing fossil energy infrastructure. For example, the six 660MW coal-fired systems of Drax, the biggest coal-fired nuclear power plant in the UK, are all converted to biomass to accomplish no carbon exhausts and also acquire substantial carbon emission decrease advantages; biomass energy is the only renewable energy selection that can totally replace fossil energy. It can not just meet the needs of the three significant energy terminals, power, electricity and heat, but additionally produce bio-based products to replace petroleum-based materials, which can not be attained by other renewable energy sources. 3. Development Fad of Biomass Gas Pellet Market. ( 1) Recently, the number of pellet cpus buying biomass pellet mill has raised. ( 2) The biomass pellet mill has actually kept a quick growth trend, and also there should be a large market space in the future. Collecting pertinent details, we discovered that from 2010 to 2013, the ordinary yearly sales of biomass pellet equipments increased from 228 million yuan to 1.985 billion yuan. Ships in all parts of the country, gradually creating an commercial chain advantage. submitted by richi-carmen to pelletmachinery [link] [comments] |
2023.06.09 03:36 Adventurous-Ear9433 Why Mica, Mercury,Pyrite were used at Teohuatican, Genetic Evidence for 2 founding Populations of the Americas, 'Magicians'

Alcaraz vs Djokovic :
How will we survive without the big 3? Well, here is your answer. Carlos Alcaraz is primed for his first Roland Garros title, and for once in tennis, the expectations for a phenom are warranted. Alcaraz is a whopping -210 for this match, which is the most significant odds for a player facing Djokovic in a long time. For reference, the last few Nadal vs Djokovic matches at Roland Garros had Djokovic at around even odds. There is some inflation to the odds because of how easily Alcaraz has been winning and due to Djokovic’s lackluster clay season/potential elbow issues, but for the most part, I agree with this line.
Djokovic has long been the best hope for someone to stop Nadal at slams, but he’s never really been dominant from the baseline. Even in his most recent win, it seemed like Nadal just hit a wall physically more than Djokovic was able to dominate with his tennis. Novak has power, but he’s much more dangerous on fast courts and Roland Garros is playing extremely slow. With two weeks of play scuffing up the courts, difficult bounces (not Djokovic’s favorite thing) are also becoming a factor. A player will need skill, willpower, and actual power to win this title, and I think Djokovic is outmatched by a tiny bit in all three categories here.
If we sort through attributes, Alcaraz is winning in a lot of them currently. I make no assumptions about other events, but in these conditions, here’s where I see the edges. Alcaraz is faster than Djokovic. Alcaraz is able to generate his own power easier than Djokovic, and is currently hitting his forehand better. Alcaraz is employing the dropshot with great success, and Djokovic tends to utilize his well but he can get a bit predictable with the location down the line off his backhand and he doesn’t use the forehand drop very often. As far as stamina, Alcaraz and Djokovic are likely around even, but Alcaraz’s preferred pace is as fast as possible, and I think he can hang at that level longer than his opponent. Where Djokovic wins finally is in the service department, and on the backhand wing. Djokovic is a bit more accurate than Alcaraz, although Carlos has shown improvement on his ability to hit the T serve from the ad side. Alcaraz’s backhand is very solid, but Djokovic in a rhythm rarely makes errors and he locates the ball a bit more accurately than Alcaraz.
All of these edges, I would say, are slight at this point, but Alcaraz has continued to improve on tour and that’s what makes this feel like a likely spot for him to beat one of the all-time greats of tennis. The only player who has won a set thus far is Taro Daniel, and that set was largely Carlos employing some flair for the crowd and having to resettle once it became clear Daniel was not going to join him in the fun. Musetti was so defeated by the end of his match against Alcaraz that he opted for the highlight reel stuff, and the crowd was treated to some great rallies but Lorenzo had resigned. Tsitsipas dug in after getting smoked in the first two sets, but Alcaraz was able to turn things up. One big aspect of both Djokovic and Alcaraz’s success has been their teams. During the 3rd set Tsitsipas comeback Alcaraz had turned to his box for inspiration (and a little venting). Juan Carlos Ferrero made the “chatter” motion with his hand a few times, and then made a fist. Such a simple thing, but a way to take a player out of their own internal monologue in a key moment without giving them excess direction to debate about is such an intelligent move. Alcaraz is now fresh for this match, and is thriving in these conditions having dismissed two players who took Djokovic to 5 sets in the past.
Djokovic will be ready for this contest as well, after a difficult but inevitable win against Karen Khachanov. Khachanov’s serve gave him the ability to hang even with Djokovic, but once Novak started to get returns in play at Karen’s feet he struggled to hang on. Djokovic’s consistency and his ability to maintain a level once he reaches it are usually good enough to defeat most players. Having to come up with constant offense and put in nonstop effort is something that most players on tour can’t keep up for more than 1-2 sets, but that’s exactly the level of tennis that Alcaraz has been training towards. This paragraph was supposed to be able Djokovic, but here comes Alcaraz creeping in. Watching him against Tsitsipas, I legit felt like he has a chance to break the big 3s record at the majors. He has 3-4 years already of training harder than everyone else on tour, and his speed and forehand are major factors in any match on any surface. The best part has been watching him work specifically on the holes in his game. His backhand was a bit generic, and he has fixed that. He steps into almost every ball now and looks to infuse pace. His serve is still the bit that lags behind the rest of his game, but it is improving at every tournament and there aren’t double fault issues, it’s just not as noticeably incredible as the rest of his game.
When I’m done gushing, I have to admit that I’m still expecting a close match. Musetti came out hesitant and looking to work into the match, and folded shortly after. Tsitsipas was fired up, but his insistence on trying to cover his backhand left him victim to a ton of passes and dropshots to his forehand side. Djokovic is the guy though that simply will not quit. When Alcaraz has the third set lapse that he had against his two previous opponents, Djokovic will win that set. If Alcaraz gets into a dialogue with his box, Djokovic will see it and make him play extra balls. Novak also is a big-match player and that means that the slower more compartmentalized pace of the match may allow him to create a different optic than really exists. If Djokovic is losing rallies, but hits a few timely aces, suddenly the match looks different to Carlos. If Djokovic plays possum early but elevates his game, suddenly there is doubt for Alcaraz to consider. I do think the crowd will get behind whoever is struggling also, and Djokovic has one of the most indomitable spirits on the tennis court that we’ve ever witnessed.
Alcaraz had big targets in his past two matches because Musetti and Tsitsipas don’t really have dangerous backhands, but here that’s gone because it’s Novak’s strength. Alcaraz has been taking some very deep return positions, and Djokovic is adept at the net so some serve and volley may be on the menu. The only big problem I see for Djokovic is that Alcaraz is hitting bigger than him off both wings. If the match goes deep, I think Alcaraz will be able to score more without going to dangerous targets. We saw Swiatek today go much safer on big points and just drive the ball with heavy topspin until she got up court, and we’ve seen Nadal do that with his forehand for a very long time. Alcaraz’s forehand is the same thing. This is mostly reading like I expect Alcaraz to have the early lead, but the best thing about this match is that if he doesn’t. he’s equally likely to dig in and make a comeback. Their previous meeting was a 3 set thriller in Madrid that Alcaraz won, so he’ll have some confidence to draw upon. This feels like the finals, and I think Alcaraz is set to get the first of many Roland Garros titles. Alcaraz in 4-5.
Ruud vs Zverev :
People are quick to dismiss Ruud’s potential, but he continually performs well at the majors. It’s his style I think that confuses people into thinking he doesn’t belong at this level. Ruud does everything in a very rigid and professional manner. If coaches were able to choose a high-percentage shot before every swing, they would come up with something very close to Ruud’s game. A lot of people forget that Thiem and Federer also made technical skill and decision-making their main focus, and with Ruud’s backhand still just a defensive tool, there is a lot of room for him to keep improving. In the meantime, he’s in another major semifinal and has a winnable match here against one of the tour’s most giraffe infused humans.
If you cross a #2 pencil with a surfboard, and give it a mirror for its birthday, you might get Alexander Zverev. He’s a polarizing figure on tour, but he’s showing decent signs of growing up. Last year he looked like he’d be defeating Nadal at this event, and he suffered an ankle injury that forced him to make some very unforgettable noises. Since his return it seems like he is working harder, and it’s a welcome change. He’s been training at a high level, and his return to aggressive play from the baseline is yielding him results. It’s easy to forget that his first few forays at tour level saw him going for huge groundstroke winners and almost beating Nadal on hardcourt (a putaway volley away from the win), but his recent play has shown signs that the time off has re-ignited his hunger on the court, and maybe even his brain.
Zverev had a really tough test against Etcheverry, who stole the momentum early in the second and almost carried it through into the third. Early in the second I wondered if Zverev had the legs for a 5-set match, because since his return he’s really only been playing the 2/3 format. Etcheverry proved a bit too ambitious during rallies though, and unforced errors on the forehand cost him the 3rd and 4th set. It was interesting to me to see Tomas going so aggressively when I felt he was on even terms in the rallies, but it’s another reminder of the weight of shot that Zverev brings. At home I see the defense as effortless, but when you’re the one chasing the heavy cross-court forehands and dealing with a backhand that doesn’t seem to miss, it’s easy to want to end the rally. Zverev had some double fault issues bubble to the surface, but he is through and should be moderately fresh for this semifinal.
Ruud’s quarterfinal was much easier and yet portions of it seemed impossibly difficult. Rune’s mom Aneke gave an interview after his win against Cerundolo and insisted that Rune would not be physically impacted by the 5-setter, despite him appearing to indicate his legs were fried towards the end of the match. This was nice gamesmanship, but insisting that there is no physical fatigue after there is clearly physical fatigue is a very “there is no man behind the curtain” vibe. Rune was not prepared to play in the first set against Ruud, and basically swung tentatively on a lot of balls. Ruud dominated things without having to do much, and the second set was a mirror of the first. That lactic acid buildup is really tough to completely override, even with the aid of ice baths (highly recommend these btw for recovery, do your research first though and ease yourself into them with cold showers first) and the best nutrition on tour. There were some comments from Aneke about Rune not really hydrating properly or eating well during matches, and that is something him and his team will have to work out. It was thrown out there that he was stuck with blueberry flavor drinks instead of his preferred raspberry, and while that is hilarious, you could also say that if the kid has clear issues with nutrition and hydration on court, and you aren’t getting him the stuff he needs to thrive, then your team isn’t really doing its job. Coaching tennis is 10% strategy, and 90% babysitting.
Rune took an off-court bathroom break after the 2nd set, and whatever he took clearly worked. He came back out bounding with energy, and the elevation in level took Ruud by surprise. Casper had been coasting with mid-level offense, and Rune’s hyper-aggressive shotmaking left him struggling to hang in the set. He dropped the third 6-3, and Rune had the crowd on his side. Unfortunately, the energy didn’t last forever. Ruud is very physically strong, and he’s a well-coached player. He dug in on defense and started really hitting the majority of his shots to the open court. Rune was still dangerous but it wore his legs down and Ruud eventually got the benefit of errors. Casper should be fresh for this semifinals, but I don’t love the Rune match as prep for playing Zverev. Zverev’s shot selection is a lot more conservative than Rune, and his serve is a lot bigger. When you’ve been scoring your points by being consistent, it can sometimes take a mental reset before you realize you have to hit a number of shots to win. What I do think is positive for Ruud is that Zverev doesn’t possess the same ability to hit his forehand both directions that Rune does. Zverev is mostly hitting solid angles this week when he goes cross-court, and his inside out forehand is decent but is not travelling through the court at an ungettable pace at all.
As far as strategies, Ruud will want to sit in the forehand to forehand exchanges. He also may want to try making any facial expressions, but perhaps this is too risky after so long as a roboto. In all seriousness, Zverev wins if he can make this about their backhands, and Ruud wins if he can make this about their forehands. Zverev is serving much bigger than Ruud, but not necessarily better. Ruud is more consistent from the baseline also and is a bit more adept at creating. Him having the physical tools to go 5 sets here and the experience of making last year’s finals is also a key, given that Zverev losing actually still represents a big result for him. It’s hard to keep fighting sometimes when you’ve already sort of done enough, and Zverev’s major issues in the past have been mental. Despite the first semifinal being the marquee matchup, this is likely to be a very long and good quality contest. I think overall, Ruud’s baseline tennis is just at a higher tier than Zverev has been competing at since his return, and Zverev has been getting the benefit at this event of a very 500 level draw while Ruud has been dispatching actual monsters. I like Jarry against Zverev, I like tired Rune against Zverev, and I like Ruud against Zverev. King of Clay Casper Ruud in 4-5.

2023.06.09 02:53 Simon_Drake Stormlight magic system
I've not read any of the Stormlight Archives books yet but I know there's a magic system based on this stuff called Stormlight.
So what's the deal with it, can anyone use it? Do they use it all the time? What can they use it for?
No spoilers please, I haven't read the books yet.
(I should edit the Flair to be "The Way Of Kings (I've only read the cover so far)"

The Wales Bonner x adidas SS23 Footwear Collection Debuts Tomorrow
adidas Originals and Wales Bonner continue their ongoing collaborative partnership with a Spring/Summer 2023 collection. For this collection, the central focus switches to the Caribbean as the British designer adroitly explores the Trefoil’s lasting presence within Jamaican culture.
This season sees Bonner returning to the classic adidas Samba and the SL72 running shoe, both were both featured in the FW20 and SS22 drops. Shown below, the Samba is crafted in full leather covered in a reflective gunmetal finish with decorative-stitched Three Stripes branding on the sides and heel badge. Its oversized tongues nods to the retro soccer boots while sitting atop an Earthy Brown rubber sole. The SL72 Knit will drop in two color options. Both comes constructed out of a knitted upper with suede overlays and premium leather tongues, heels, and inner lining for an extra premium touch. The first one is dressed in Green with Yellow contrasting accents, while the other comes in a Brown with Burnt Orange accents. All three pairs come with Wales Bonner branding on the lateral heel, insoles, and co-branding packaging.
Drawing on the nation’s awe-inspiring landscape and environment, the collection features a matching light teal nylon tracksuit, signature tracksuit in elevated knit construction, striking silver anorak with matching shorts, and the introduction of a Jamaican icon in the form of a Harrington jacket and flared trouser set. Other highlights include a toweling top and shorts set, knitted geometric patten roll neck, knitted sweater vest, neutral sweater sweatpant set, and two vibrant short-sleeve cotton t-shirts.
Get an official look at the Wales Bonner x adidas SS23 Footwear Collection below and look for them to release on June 9th at select adidas Originals retailers and adidas.com. Retail is set at $200 per pair.

2023.06.09 02:23 mfjp Best Mattress + Pod Cover Combo
I’ve been waiting to buy this pod cover for at least 3 years and finally feel good enough financially to invest in my sleep and get after it.
I just got the King size pro cover, but have a Queen size bed. I’m in the process of deciding which bed to buy with it. I don’t want to spend as much on a luxury bed given the value of the eight sleep.
Any recs on a good bed combo? Been looking at nectar?
Thanks, much appreciated

Timestamp:
https://imgur.com/a/sNArsTp Howdy all. It's time to free up room in the safe as it is starting to overtake the room, top of dresser, top of safe, and closet. Venmo, PayPal F&F, cashapp accepted. The price you see is the price you pay shipping included (besides add on items) Need more or better pics? Just ask. If prices are out of line, make me an offer, I want this stuff gone to a loving home.
Trades>bundles>dibs>PM's.
$55 Magpul ACS in black, light salt. With sling swivel pocket installed.
$40-Crossbreed Super Tuck for TLR-7 sub Hellcat, horse leather, red dot cut
$40-Werkz IWB for Hellcat with TLR7 sub/optic cut. Comes with add on dual j clips, never installed. Basically new, only used like twice.
$25-Bravo concealment OWB for Glock 19/17 with TLR1. Comes with pancake loops (never installed) Only used for nightstand gun holster.
$30- 2 holsters for glock 17 with TLR7. These are from when the TLR7 had the weird side button, but I assume will work with newer TLR7a lights, but I do not have a new style TLR7a to test. 1 Gearcraft IWB with concealment claw, 1 unknown OWB. Unknown holster has sharpie mark where I marked to heat it and reshape for better retention, so consider it a freebie with the IWB.
$45- Cloud Defensive LCS for Surefire ST-07 tape switch. New, never used. I'm too poor for Surefire lights, ordered by mistake because I can't read.
$375 PSA 14.7 CHF chrome lined pin and weld upper. Factory PSA upper purchased middle/late last year dirrect from PSA. Added Magpul dust cover. Less than 100 rounds through it. No BCG or CH. Ran great. Too nice to be my loanebeater upper. This one:
https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-14-7-mid-lenght-premium-5-56-nato-1-7-13-5-m-lok-pinned-welded.html $215-Sinus clear-er 9000 upper, built by me. This was my first AR, so dont shame me too much. Cerro forge forward assist upper (probably an Anderson) with a 6"ish? DPMS 1/9 twist chrome lined barrel. Pistol length gas. FSP cut down to clear a Fortis REV-9 Keymod handguard. KAK flash can. No BCG or CH. Light salt on the upper, light mark on the underside of the rail where I had a AFG mounted because I like not shooting my hand. I cannot even begin to explain how loud this thing is. I always put foamies in, then also used muffs. Tired of waiting for a cold range to go hang new targets? Just get this out, do a mag dump and you usually end up with the range to yourself very shortly. $215? Idk what it's worth, make me an offer if that's not reasonable. I don't really want to part out because somebody "borrowed" my armorers wrench.
Add on items below. $5 shipping if bought alone, free shipping if bought with something else. Buy 2 add ons and I'll cover shipping.
$15 Trinity Force Chinese AF buffer kit. Comes with tube, spring, and carbine buffer. Not sure what I expected. $15

$20-rifle length ribbed for your pleasure handguard. Came off a PSA premium 20", immediately replaced with RAS5 for GWOT drip. $20
$15-Shockwave birds head grip for Mossberg 500/590. Comes with screw and washers. No plug, not sure the originals had a plug, and this one is old. Low salt biggest imperfection is around the screw hole.
$15-Mossberg 500 plastic corn cob pump. With "don't shoot your hand off strap" low salt, whoever put the strap on did a bad job at getting the screws symmetrical, but it works
$10-Polymer heat shield for Mossberg 500 will not work with Magpul fore end
$10 NDZ anodized red aluminum safety for mossberg 500. Will include screw and little ball.
$15-Odin works XGMR-1. Fits New Frontier style AR9 lowers. New in package. Bought wrong one.
$20 Blue Force gear Standard Issue Vickers sling. Well-used, absolutely ratfucked would be another way to put it. Still works fine, just frayed on some edges. Great for your clone correct beat to fuck GWOT larp. I bought this as surplus, and took a risk not seeing a picture. Smelled like rancid assholes, 3 trips through the washing machine mostly got the smell out, remaining sand from the Middle East included for free. NO QD's
Free items (2) gun locks. New in bag with keys. Free with any purchase, just let me know how many you want.

- GCash to be IPO-ready in 6 months
- BSP cuts RRR by 250 basis points
- Vulcan Industrial changes ticker to ECVC
- LMG buyer: some additional due diligence
- PSE account growth slows
▌Main stories covered:
- [NEWS] Globe to ready GCash for IPO by year-end... Globe Telecom [GLO 1720.00 unch; 116% avgVol] [link] said that it expects its e-wallet unit, GCash, to be “push-button ready” for an IPO “by the end of the year.” GLO President Ernest Cu said, of plans to IPO GCash: “The growth is there, the profitability has been there for almost two years now.” Mr. Cu added, “We’re pretty much ripe for it.”
- MB: There’s not much left to say about GCash that hasn’t already been said. It was born in the right place, at the right time, and will mature in a regulatory environment that is cheering for it to grow and succeed. I’ve personally advocated for GLO to spin-off GCash for years now, but that’s not some kind of original hot take. It’s been clear for a long time that the needs of GCash are different from those of its parent, but it wasn’t always clear that GLO felt the same way. For the past few quarters, GLO has been trying to do this on-the-fly rebrand from a “telco” to a “techco”, which came off to me as a clumsy attempt to pretend like GLO is still the center of relevance to investors. To be clear, GLO didn’t say that the IPO would happen by year-end, only that it would be “push-button ready” by that time, and even if it were ready by Christmas, there’s no telling what market factors might be in-play that could result in GLO delaying even further. I’m curious to hear more as the plan takes shape.
- [NEWS] BSP cut banks’ reserve ratio by 250 basis points... The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) [link] cut the reserve requirement ratio (RRR) for universal and commercial banks by 250 basis points, down to 9.5%. The cut will go into effect on June 30 of this year. The BSP also cut the RRR for digital banks and thrift banks, but to a lesser degree. On June 30, the RRR is 9.5% for big banks, 6.0% for digital banks, 2.0% for thrift banks, and 1.0% for rural banks and co-ops. The BSP said that the timing of the cut is aligned with the expiration of “alternative modes of compliance with reserve requirements by end-June 2023”, that the RRR cut did not “constitute any shift in the BSP’s monetary policy settings”, and that controlling inflation through interest rate management is still its top priority.
- MB: Some context here on the RRR is useful. The RRR itself is the percentage of deposits that a bank must keep as reserves with the BSP. Historically, the Philippines has maintained a very high RRR relative to its neighbors, and it’s been the goal of the BSP to bring this ratio down for nearly a decade. Each percentage point of reduction is equivalent to roughly ₱150 billion in new money injected into the system in the form of loans that banks are now able to make, so this move is equivalent to approximately ₱375 billion of new money entering the economy. The BSP seems to be implying that the cut is roughly equivalent to the expiring accommodations that were made for banks during the post-COVID recovery period. This is a great move for banks, as they’ll be able to write more loans and earn more interest based on deposits that they’ve already technically taken, but is it a great move for the rest of us?
- [NOTES] Quick takes from around the market...
- Vulcan Industrial [VUL suspended] [link] board approved a series of measures, including a ticker symbol change (“ECVC”) and the offer and issuance of 550 million new common shares, to be sold by private placement for ₱1.00/share, in order to comply with the PSE’s 20% public float rule. VUL said that the proceeds of that sale would go toward “operations of the Company, business development, repayment of advances and/or acquisition of mining rights.”
- MB Quick Take: As a Star Trek fan, I admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for the original name and ticker of this company, so while it makes no sense to me why the new owners would want to incorporate the old company name into the new entity at all, I appreciate that “Vulcan” will live on in the new name, East Coast Vulcan Corporation. That said, I cannot accept that the board passed up the opportunity to simply slap an “E” on the front of this bad boy and have perhaps the most interesting ticker symbol in recent memory: “EVUL”. Even “ECVUL” is better than “ECVC”.
- LMG Corp [LMG suspended] [link] acquirer, Maxwealth Infinity Holdings (MIH), was background checked by a few diligent MB readers, and they found that the e-money fintech investment that MIH is involved in is loosely within the Tony Tiu universe of weird agri-tech companies. E-pon is the e-money app that was released by the Binangonan Rural Bank (BRB) in Q2 last year. BRB counts Mr. Tiu’s private holdco, Earthright Holdings (parent company of AgriNurture [ANI 7.32 ▲0.1%; 374% avgVol]), as one of its significant shareholders.
- MB Quick Take: When I mentioned that MIH was giving real SquidPay vibes, I didn’t even know that they were tangentially related to the Tony Tiu universe of “weird companies with lofty language and hard-to-define operations”. I don’t like to assume, but these kinds of entanglements matter to me as a long-term investor. Should they matter to you, too? That depends on your investing style, your knowledge of their businesses, and your tolerance for risk. Just putting it out there!
- Philippine Stock Exchange [PSE 160.10 ▼1.8%; 318% avgVol] [link] revealed “muted” growth in online stock market accounts in 2022, up only 8% y/y to 1.25 million. PSE noted a 2% decrease in traditional broker accounts to 453,827. Total accounts were up 5%, from 1.62 million in 2021, to 1.71 million in 2022. The PSE attributed the slower growth to a “clean-up of dormant accounts”, but said that it expects an “uptick in the numbers again with the foray of new stock brokerage firms in the online trading space and the upcoming rollout of stock investing features in finance apps”.
- MB Quick Take: The market is suffering from a crisis of interest. As Nicky Franco correctly points out, the PSE substantially lags behind all of our SE Asian peers with similarly-developed capital markets when it comes to the number of companies that we have on the stock exchange. Public floats are hilariously small. Volume is bone-dry. Most of the action this year has been driven by tender offers and companies trying to leave the exchange. REITs have padded the PSE’s IPO stats, but these hybrid pref follow-on offerings don’t have the same impact on the stock market eco-system that a fresh equity raise from a new and growing company would. It’s not all doom and gloom, but the challenges facing the SEC and PSE are substantial. And yet, all of these problems will be quickly forgotten once (inevitably) the next bull market starts.

2023.06.09 01:22 ContentedVole Rohanne I - Amongst the Seven's Creation
Fresh air stung Rohanne's lungs in an oddly pleasant way. They had only just exited the city, she could see the smoke rising from King's Landing even as the cover of trees began to provide shade to the Lannister procession. There were few of them, Rohanne, Hugh, a small regiment of Western levies, and of course, the invited guests. Melinda and the Lannisport branch of the family had been invited as well. Rohanne was not entirely sure who would arrive, but she knew she could at least count on Theodora. She appreciated that she knew her niece that well, and could trust her in a way she could not trust her own children.
Rohanne's own children had been invited as well, but it did not appear as though any of them elected to miss any of the festivities. More's the pity, Rohanne had hoped that they would arrive on their own accord, but perhaps it was better she meet with Theodora and the others in some manner of privacy. That was, of course, the secondary purpose of this trip into the woods. The primary was exactly as she stated. Tournaments
Game trails were overgrown and abandoned this time of the year, the game allowed to reclaim their populations before the next round of hunting could begin. It was the perfect opportunity to escape the confines of the works of man, so purely manifested in the bloodsports that were about to take place inside of the Capital of the Realm, and instead be amidst the works of the Seven's hands.
Hugh and Rohanne waited by the side of the Kingsroad, astride their horses. Hugh was looking uncharacteristically calm and melancholy in the wee hours of the morning, but Rohanne tried to make up for her husband's failure to enthuse by remaining as straight-backed and stiff-lipped as ever.
