When I come here for my occasional perusing of urban-planning discussion, I sometimes see posts from people curious about this sub's opinions on motor racing (F1 in particular). While there aren't that many of these posts, I felt like there was enough discussion within those posts to elaborate on it. After all, given the global nature of F1 and the economics that go into it, I feel like it's a good way to discuss a country's attitude towards car dependency, what certain places get right or wrong when planning for large events like an F1 GP, and how F1's business practices can perpetuate car dependency/car-centric culture. As someone who's enjoyed using transit for as long as I can remember and as an F1 fan (hypocritical, I know), I figured this would be an interesting discussion.

1. Car-centric (or transit/bike-centric) planning within a race: Here I want to talk about the transportation situation behind F1 races. Since people often compare American sporting venues to European ones here, let's talk about the same for an F1 race:
   1. Good examples of transit-planning in F1 (I can think of 3 examples off the top of my head):
      1. Dutch GP (Zandvoort, NL): The most popular example of how an F1 race can be transit and bike-accessible is the Dutch city of Zandvoort. Predictably, cycling is a well-utilized mode of transport for this race, with reservable bike parking. Out of the 70k attendees in 2021, 25k biked, and 27k used the train to Zandvoort aan Zee station to get there. Zandvoort also implemented traffic-limiting measures to not flood the small city with cars. F1 organizers seem rather proud of this, stating in the race intro cinematic that only 2% of attendees showed up in a car. Although this stat is probably exaggerated to some extent, it does show that even car races can be biked to and be served well by transit.
      2. Japanese GP (Suzuka, Mie, JP): Another example of a transit-accessible F1 race is the Japanese GP in Suzuka, a fan-favorite event. IMO this is an example of how transit can be implemented for massive annual events like this one. Both Ise Railway (The local rail provider) and Mie Transport provide direct service to the circuit's train station and bus services respectively on race weekends. Although I couldn't find any statistics, footage of rail service during race weekends, and this 18-minute video of just busses heading out to go to the circuit show that local agencies in the area take transit seriously during this.
      3. Canadian GP (Montreal, Quebec, CA): Ironically, one of the better examples of transit-accessible F1 venues is in car-centric North America. The circuit (Circuit Gilles Villeneuve) is within the confines of the Parc Jean-Drapeau, served by STM's yellow metro line (btw, why is the yellow line so short?). Since there is zero spectator parking at the venue, the most effective option to get there is via. the metro station. F1 themselves even discourage driving to the circuit, instead directing visitors to use the metro. I attended this race back in June and I can attest to the number of people simultaneously going to the metro station. It definitely was a moshpit but still beats sitting in traffic for 2 weeks. I've heard some complaints from locals here that the event tends to attract people with loud vehicles to the city center. Although I do believe that F1 being in the city contributes to this, I feel like this can be solved through the city rethinking its attitude towards cars rather than rejecting F1 as a whole. Looking at the event in a vacuum though, the Canadian GP is a pleasant departure from the norm in North America. (P.S. Montreal's metro was fantastic from my experience. Good service, (relatively) clean stations, and attractive rolling stock all contributed to a pleasant experience. Would love to have something like it where I live.)
   2. Bad examples of transit-planning in F1 (For every good example, there are of course the bad examples):
      1. United States GP (Austin, Texas, US): It's in Texas, should be self-explanatory at this stage. There is a shuttle from downtown, but given that this is Texas, I suppose there is a reason why most people opt to drive. The abundance of surface parking will probably make most people here write home to their families in terror. Some portions of the broadcast are highly distracting due to 60% of the frame containing parking lots rather than racing. This place, combined with Gigafactory Austin being nearby, makes this area a cathedral for anti-human design that perfectly shows the problems that the US has with stuff like this.
      2. British GP (Silverstone, UK): A somewhat tamer version of what can be seen in Austin, but still far from ideal, as a significant portion of the attendees, shows up by car. Although shuttles are available from Milton Keynes, it's still a 22-minute drive from the station to the circuit. The local campgrounds built to house visitors don't exactly help the local traffic given that most of them are car-centric. Other races, including The Hungarian GP (Budapest, HU), have similar campgrounds that have the same issues of car-centrism, and events like the Spanish GP in Barcelona have transit issues that reflect that even in Europe, there is work that can be done to reduce car-usage during large events.
   3. Miscellaneous examples: Miami and Las Vegas are 2 recent US additions to the F1 calendar that can tell us a lot about the US's car-dependent nature. While Miami isn't terribly car-centric as an event, the fact that the track was built on what was the parking lot of the Hard Rock Stadium shows how much space stadiums in the US allocate to cars. While little is known about the Las Vegas race as of now (set to take place in November 2023), the fact that they're going to be racing down the strip shows how unnecessarily wide the roads down the LV strip are.
2. Ways F1 perpetuates car dependency and car culture: Although I adore F1, I have to admit that it has done an extremely poor job in terms of sustainability, and it certainly does not help with the prevalence of car culture within society. Here are some things that I think contribute to this:
   1. Glorification of fossil fuels:
      1. Almost every F1 team has a petroleum partner (i.e. Mercedes & Petronas, Red bull & Mobil1, Ferrari & Shell, Alpine & Castrol/BP, Aston Martin & Aramco, Williams & Gulf). Beyond that, F1's dependence on Arabian oil money (particularly with their strategic partnership with Aramco and the subsequent introduction of the Saudi Arabian GP) has been hugely contentious lately, and are testament to the sport's dependency on fossil fuel advertising. It's logical, but advertising petroleum isn't exactly going to do wonders for reducing car dependency and the consequences of climate change. Much like with tobacco advertising in F1 though, I feel like the complete eradication of oil advertising can help mitigate this issue, but unfortunately, I feel like so long as middle-east money is a part of F1, it will only do more harm than good.
      2. Back in 2013, Greenpeace organized a protest at the Belgium race, mainly advocating against Shell's involvement in F1. So people are very much aware of the impact that F1 has on the fossil fuel market. Some have also used F1 races as a platform to advocate against fossil fuel investments, including Just Stop Oil's track invasion during the 2022 British GP.
      3. While we're on the topic of Arab Oil Cash, it's also important to note the human rights abuses some middle eastern countries have committed. Much like the world cup, I feel like the recent additions of ME races (i.e. Qatar), serve as distractions from the realities of these countries. Again, this is something that fans and even some drivers acknowledge and condemn, I'm afraid it'll be a part of the sport unless the very concept of bribery and corruption ceases to exist.
   2. Glorification of cars:
      1. Out of the 10 F1 teams, 5 are directly owned by an automaker, with 8 having significant ties with one. While I don't think this has as much of an impact as fossil fuel advertising, I know many (especially here) are upset about the glorification of cars in advertising.

Does anyone else feel that the elder leadership and guides have made a complete sh!tshow of our civilized paradigm?
We have been gifted with sovereign connections and abilities that are absolutely wondrous. Due to traditions, dogma, and power dichotomies many people grow up feeling utterly lost. People get pigeon-holed into choosing/affiliating with one path or another rather than seeing the bigger picture. (i.e. a big G god is the only deity in town, a truent 'brotherhood' is benevolently calling the shots behind the scenes, a hermaphrodite goat with a voracious appetite demanding your servitude, blue space chickens are diligently working to save us all, etc.)
Is anyone out there ready to come up with something new? For thousands of years a small amount of society has had an interest in the mysteries. In the past, the knowledge acquired has been used to achieve positions of prestige like a tribal shaman, a priest/priestess, a regent, or a Swiss banker. It is time to switch things up. It is time to extend a hand up to everyone. Let's pop the top off of the mystery can and teach our young ones a better way.
I am calling out all the spiritual rebels. Is anyone out there interested in creating something new? There must be some people out there fed up with the compartmentalized dissemination of knowledge. There must be others fed up with the East/West, Dark/Light, Righthand/Lefthand dualistic nature of every aspect of society. Does anyone else realize that these dual natures make up a whole body of things? We have been drastically limiting ourselves thinking that we must choose only one way. It is high time that we realize that there are numerous roads that lead to growth, and different ways work for different people. Isn't it about time we grow TF up and embrace that?
I wish to connect with anyone that may feel the same, and willing to face the consequences and challenges of challenging the 'old guards'. Let us cooperate, learn, grow, and ultimately flourish together as we create a whole new paradigm for future generations to come

At the time I was sober going on 18, 19 years. I was, and am on disability since 09' for schizoaffective bipolar type disorder.
For the longest time, especially since sobriety, I've been overwhelmed with thinking. Space, time, behavior, tornadoes...whatever.
But, since my life was an unmanaged train wreck I had no confidence in myself as having any quality. It seems that feeling good about yourself comes from a well managed life.
My last job was as a janitor on the army base near by roughly 5 years ago. I couldnt handle the pressure. I was so dependant on others for everything I was asking if I was sweeping properly. Very bad mindset. A lady mentioned crying and it made me feel like crying. I didnt understand how that could be. It seemed like witchcraft, so to speak. That was my last day at my last job. It was my 4th attempt to go back to work since my disability badge acquisition!
I've been in therapy for 16 or 17 years ago I got into therapy from a mental health episode. During that visit at the crisis stabilisation unit in Virginia (Fredricksburg) I met a man that changed my life. He went by the name Bose Uncle. He taught me a breathing exercise. 3 in 6 out. You breath in deep for 3 seconds roughly then out for 6 seconds. Also roughly. Dont try to be specific like me and do it exactly 3 and 6.
On down the road, life and me under pressure and practicing my breathing because sufferage bleep blop bloop, pandemic. Overwhelming, unadulteraded pain in the brain from an anxiety I'd never expierenced before I saw a vision. It seemed to be the exact same thing that happened to Bill Wilson from AA. A wind blew through me. His words. My words on it are, I was no longer a bound up point in time and space holding on to the memories from the stimulation from the moment. I was free from the tension that came about from the fucking utter bullshit that exists. I let it go. The moment. I stopped holding and figuring.

It was like my being afraid got wore out. I remember specifiaclly saying to myself at the height of my pain in a ridgid bodily posture laying in my recline, "bullshit." I calle dbullshit on my old beliefs. That old fire and brimstone god. Intstead I chose "my concept" of life as my God. My ideas are good to. Changed life.
About six months later I nearly died from pancreatitis. When I got home from 6 days in the hospital I shared it on facebook. I received a good number of get well soon messages as expected. I did not get what I thought I would. People coming to visit, bringing me food...all that. I nearly fucking died. I know hundreds of people. What does that mean? My perception is fucked up, my beghhvior is fucked up, I need to change.
I did not think that way at first. At first I thought, "I fucking hate everyone." For a while.
Then 6 months later, I got diagnosed with autism. April 24th 2021.
6 months later after learning to relax, I rested on my heels for the first time in my life. This began the second chapter of my life. The taking my time portion. The I am the most impotant person in my life to me. You all come second. For ever. I no longer run to the kitchen, the bathroom, through the grocery store, drive fast, or move my limbs fast. I have even taken control of my eyes speed of movement.
Did you know that your body can control your mind. If you dont control your body your body will be controlled by your environment throught the mind.
You receive stimulus simply due to being a sensing being. This moves you. If you are not aware of it. Make yourself aware of this and take control of your body, the way you look, smell, move (behavior speed) amplitude of voice ...total bodily control and you can eliminate a great deal of your own suffering. I havew come off my depression meds and greatfully have finally been more aptly medicated with litium. Now I dont have to force myself into slow mo behavior but I do stay aware I think from a bit of fear.

is it worth a bart ride to the east bay to ride diablo?
i've ridden tam many times, all the smaller local SF or adjacent climbs like conzelman and twin peaks and san bruno mountain and all that. i'm not fast uphill but have good endurance and can basically just keep going for hours.
thinking of a loop something like this, 65 mi, 5,500 feet. most similar ride i've done is 64 miles, 6,100 feet, but the climbing was broken up a little more. a little under 5 hours rolling time.

THIS IS A PvPvE SERVER, WHILE IT IS NOT REQUIRED, PvP IS ENCOURAGED
• Personal abuse, obscene, harassing, threatening, hateful, discriminatory or defamatory remarks of any nature won't be tolerated. This includes racial, sexual, homophobic or cultural slurs, even in the context of a joke/meme.
• Deliberately creating toxic situations or debates will not be tolerated.
• No impersonating staff under any context.
• No ban evading.
• No stream sniping.
• No glitching, hacking, and/or abusing bugs. (Glitching into bases, etc.)
• No griefing, such as blocking off other players bases while not actively raiding them.
• No logging off INSIDE another players base.
• No megaphone/microphone spam.
• No building in vital buildings/areas: hospitals, police stations, military buildings, gas stations, water, beaches, main roads, etc.

• No blocking off access to any other military loot spawns.
• Bases must be realistic, no floating/sky bridges.

NOTE: It is up to the players to read the building rules and make sure their base is setup correctly. This includes floating bases and any base that surrounds airdrop zones. Bases will be deleted without compensation.

• Combat logging: Defined as exiting the server within 5 minutes after last being struck by a player's attack, striking a player, be it firearm, melee, explosive, or otherwise.
• Staff reserve the right to ban players for situations not listed above.

After a long and drooling three weeks of modding up Skyrim SSE for Xbox X/S, I finally nailed it down to where you can have 150 mods with the old Bruma Expansion, and experience no CTD's or bugs.
I went back and forth using "Beyond Skyrim: Bruma v 1.3.3," and modding without it. But if you really like that mod as I do, you can have it ,and still add to the game with some really cool mods.
Unfortunately, you can't use the newer Bruma Expansion it has to be the older one, but even so, I managed to have a ton of creatures and just about every conversation mod there is, land, water and tree overhauls as well, and the game runs smooth. Been playing with this load order for almost two weeks and have had no crashes or bugs so far.
Make sure you install them in the order they're listed, and of course remember, when you do the NPC overhauls, do a hard reset for each. With all these I still have about 234.6MB left over, so you won't be overloading your game.
If any of these mods are not for you, feel free to add, or play around with the ones you prefer more, but at least load this list for you base, and then play around with the mods you want. If you nay questions, feel free to message me:

just came back from the old Riverview hospital in Coquitlam- and heres some points I want to point out for those thinking of heading there. I also have some questions!
• I saw some people go in and out of the cottages, so I think they are residential despite being so decrepit
• There are no current clear entrances to the very left building but it is the most decrepit and has little to no surveillance
• I think the middle building (Centre Lawn) is being used
• There is currently a movie being filmed within the back of the far right building (East Lawn), and is heavily guarded
• There is a supposed ladder that was spoken about, but sadly the only thing I could find were the remains of a wooden ladder that had been shattered
• There were multiple smashed windows and entry points that could be broken into with force, but you would need a ladder and crowbaaxe/some kind of heavy tool.
• I went up and down the roads and found that near the entrance and cemetery is fairly busy as the two buildings there are quite modern (one is a new mental building and another is first nations)
• The cemetery isnt really worth checking out- its just a flat land with stone, much like a regular cemetery but minus the larger tombstones
Now for my questions! (answers I got in brackets)

1. Which building has asbestos? (most/all)
2. Are there any other areas worth exploring other than the points I brought up? (no, the rest is private)
3. Is there any way to find out the guard times? (no)
4. What would be considered the best time to explore? (during the day because as long as youre respectful, youre allowed to stay within the permitted areas)
5. If the ladder exists, what type of ladder is it?
6. The hell is the big black hill in the middle of the cemetery??

Edit- After reading the comments I understand now that it is very illegal to trespass there. Im not going to delete anything off the original post as I hope the difficulty of getting in will steer people away.
Edit 2- I want to clarify that I went from 1:00 PM- 3:00 PM and missed the bus so I walked all the way to the cemetery from the other side of the place. I saw a lot of the stuff there and sincerely apologize if I was not welcome there within those times. I also actually saw some residents there that were incredibly kind and smiled to me and I smiled back, and the comments have confirmed that yes it is basically a small neighbourhood- im a little sad the outside of the cottages are so unkept though :(.

This is a huge game for GS as they are playing the second best team in the East . GS doesn’t look like a championship team this year as they have sucked on the road but have been very good at home. I think they win and cover
