We both work in tech and are in the absolute highest tax bracket.
Spouse = $400k salary $700k stock based compensation
Me = $100k salary 20k stock based compensation
2 young kids I’m in my mid 40s, husband is late 30s.
Given my salary is now a drop in the bucket of our total earnings, and the fact that I lose nearly 50% of that amount to taxes… I’m not sure why I am burning myself out trying to keep up with a high stress tech job with 2 young kids and aging parents.
I want to CoastFire and keep working 20ish hours a week, but have more flexibility and try something new. I’ve worked for the same tech company for 20 years and have a dream job by many standards, but it’s time to make a change.
I have about $100k I could invest in a new business, education, or to replace my salary for a year or so.
I want to still contribute around $50k a year to our overall family finances annually.
If you were in a similar situation, what would you do?
I’ve thought about: - Starting a non-profit, managing and growing it to a size where I can take a reasonable salary - Starting a small business -Becoming a qualified real estate professional (doesn’t count as part of W2)

I'm thinking if someone is middle class living in a developing country (e.g. rural Madagascar) where they make a decent income but nothing to sustain that life is convenient because they need to do everything themselves and almost live off-the-grid. Supermarkets/shops may not exist, they have to subsistence farm, food shortages, lack of options, lack of quality, lack of reliable power source, etc. Basically at the mercy of any health issue because the hospitals don't exist to treat you. Cars are expensive because it is hard to get cars, and spare parts from the manufacturing country to yours. Waste collection might not exist so you have to do everything yourself and either burn or dump in a landfill yourself. There are no taxis, so if you don't have a car or another mode of transportation, you don't have another way of getting anywhere except walking or a bicycle.
A very developed country (Switzerland) has supermarkets with abundance but everything is expensive, you may have to resort to buying certain things in bulk to save money or cut down (meat, fuel, energy bills, car taxes, parking). Hospital bills may also be expensive because all the medical staff is paid very well, facilities are expensive. Cars are expensive because they are taxed heavily. So people might choose to cycle because it's prohibitively expensive and unjustified to drive a car everywhere. Parking and insurance is expensive. Waste collection is very strict and limited (because it's expensive, so you have to do all the manual sorting yourself, reduce waste, wheel out the correct bin on the correct day otherwise you get fined, etc. Hold on to the waste for the rest of the week regardless of whether it stinks or not). If you don't have a car, then your only options might be to cycle somewhere or walk, and, why a lot of high earning people in Central London cycle to work and arrive there sweaty every day, go through the inconvenience of showering again, or get on trains from really far away to get away from expensive real estate, which may blow the mind of a southern or Eastern European middle class person that can comfortably get in their car and park at work, no sweat.
And basically, the countries in the sweet spot in the middle (economically speaking) have the best of both worlds. Services aren't expensive, so middle class people basically all have cars, multiple per family, large houses, or ample apartments, driveways, maids, eat out all the time, pay less for fuel, food is cheap and abundant, dump any waste, never recycle and no one cares, no planning at all, just dump it and they will collect it for you every day. Free plastic bags at the supermarket, no need to be carrying around a personal 'shopping cart'. Etc. They live the best quality and care-free life of all, and definitely the most unsustainable.. But what is indeed the end-goal here?
Are we all meant to be like Switzerland in the future? Where breathing will be taxed, and you can't make a noise or you'll be fined, and you have to pay the price of a house to own the parking spot in front of your house to allow you to park there? and you have to drive to a cheaper country (France) to smuggle meat back in the country to lessen the food bill? Or are we meant to live like Berliners, Amsterdammers and Londoners, in tiny cramped apartments with no chance of ever seeing sunlight in the house because all those apartments with sunlight are sold off to rich investors, and not able to own a car even if the technology exists, and cycle in the rain and cold because cars are taxed too much, while rich people can drive everywhere?
I just think about the average life of a working middle class parent in London, Riga, Antalya and maybe Caracas.
The parent in London has a terrible quality of life, taking the underground everywhere, rushing back and forth to drop off and get kids, if past the time they get fined, etc.
The middle class parent in Riga might have a nice car, can conveniently drive to the school, drop off their child, go to work, childcare is probably cheap (although I have not checked, this could be anywhere else in Eastern Europe), come back, if late, no worries, they probably have a babysitter or driver that picks up the kid and takes care of them, etc.
Antalya might be even better than Riga because things are much cheaper in Turkey, if you earn a good salary, services are cheap.
Then a working middle class parent in Caracas probably has a very old car, expensive to repair, has to spend a lot of money on security and insurance, has to be savvy about sourcing food because it's expensive and almost always unavailable, etc.
So we went from the two extremes of the spectrum and found people with stressful lives (not denying of course that the parent on the Caracas side had it much worse than London) and probably find that the middle income ones were happiest? So the graph of happiness/quality of lfie goes up as countries develop, peaks and then goes down a bit?

Mental stimulation was there. Witty/light-hearted conversation. Connection felt effortless, felt as if I was slowly but surely peeling layers upon layers of personality, and a huge plus was our shared appreciation for music and creativity. Her taste and sense of style felt so original.
On top of all that, she’s drop dead gorgeous. Without a doubt, the most attractive female I’ve ever been with in my life so far. Same goes for our physical chemistry. I’ve never felt such slow burning intimacy in bed like that in my life. All while being able to maintain that light-hearted play in between the love making. She was so captivating.
On the ride taking her back to where she was staying, we were playing songs that were our favorites at the time being. She plays “Telephones” by Vacations and “everything” by Kehlani (emotionally charged tracks btw, holy shit). Now I may or may not be reading too much into this, but given the shared adoration of music and lyrical subject matter, I felt as if she was tryna tell me something. If you need to listen to the songs for reference and better understanding, please do. Held hands on the way there and even got a good nights kiss. W night.
But here was the thing, and I’m probably stupid for even deciding to go through with the date after knowing this: she had to fly back home 1000+ miles away the day after. She was visiting a friend of hers which I got to meet her briefly, it was all good vibes.
But overall, this was one of the most magical nights I’ve had in a while. It almost felt like a movie, given how intoxicating the energy was within a span of about 6 hours. I did not expect to meet such a woman with as much intellectual beauty as her physical. For context this took place about a week ago and hence this post asking for ways/methods I could implement towards keeping me busy.
I make music myself and exercise frequently but I just wanted to see if anyone had anything else that could be super useful. I still may be raw emotionally, but I can’t see myself ever forgetting this individual. I try my best not to let my emotions dictate the direction of my day, but I’ll say this past week has been a bit of a struggle in terms of trying to fill that deep sense of intimacy and belonging she provided. I’m succeeding in overcoming that lonely feeling some days through being productive though, so that’s a positive. It’s just the damn night time that starts getting tough. But every so often I’ll daydream and hope that we’ll cross paths again on some divine timing type shit. I hope she’s not reading this either, I’d be mad embarrassed and have to block her for a minute jk lol. But big thanks to you if read through all of this. Any feedback/advice/encouragement on this situation is greatly appreciated!

I have a 12.9 inch iPad Pro 2020, I'm considering trading in for a new 11 inch. The only problem is I have the magic keyboard and accessories for the 12.9 already, would have to be another expense for all of that. I just feel like the 12.9 is never used because it is so cumbersome, but I do appreciate the screen real estate. I have a 14 inch MacBook Pro, and no TV at home lol so I just use either for media consumption. Is it worth it downsizing now, or should I wait until after WWDC?

Bought a house for $233k in 2008. It wasn't our principal residence at first. Change of use to principal residence occurred December 31, 2012. I got a real estate valuation at that time that the house was then worth $275k. I figured we needed to pay capital gains on that difference of $42k. I received advice from two accountants that we didn't claim that capital gains until we sold the house. We did that a few years back and I was a few years behind on my taxes (I know, I know) so the review letter I received only came in now.
I consulted with another accountant who confirmed that indeed, we only claim that capital gain when it becomes realized, in the year we sold the house. The CRA is telling me that since we didn't pay capital gains at the time of the disposition (2012), we can't use that valuation of $275k from 2012, but instead just the formula that takes the difference between the buying and selling value, multiplied by whatever fraction of the time the house was not our principal residence. Because of real estate market going up like crazy, as well as a ton of work we put into the house, this results in capital gains being calculated on almost $115k instead of $42k.
Is there a way around this? I asked if we can go back and revise our 2012 return to report the capital gain then, but the CRA rep said it was one year too late to go back to 2012, and also the penalties would probably add up to as much as paying taxes on the higher amount.
Is there no way to get them to take into account the formal valuation of the house that was done as of the change of use?

I consulted with another accountant who confirmed that indeed, we only claim that capital gain when it becomes realized, in the year we sold the house. The CRA is telling me that since we didn't pay capital gains at the time of the disposition (2012), we can't use that valuation of $275k from 2012, but instead just the formula that takes the difference between the buying and selling value, multiplied by whatever fraction of the time the house was not our principal residence. Because of real estate market going up like crazy, as well as a ton of work we put into the house, this results in capital gains being calculated on almost $115k instead of $42k.
Is there a way around this? I asked if we can go back and revise our 2012 return to report the capital gain then, but the CRA rep said it was one year too late to go back to 2012, and also the penalties would probably add up to as much as paying taxes on the higher amount.
Is there no way to get them to take into account the formal valuation of the house that was done as of the change of use?

I apologize if this feels a little disorganized, but there’s just so many things swirling in my head at the moment.
Short backstory: Lower class child of multiple divorces (usually due to violent physical abuse from mother’s different husbands minus my father) that alternated going to school in my southern birth state where my father lived and a western plains state my mother moved to year after year until high school where I worked my ass off in my studies and a little part time job to get just shy of a full ride to a private liberal arts university in New York where I met my current amazing fiancée, several good NYC friends, and graduated with a BA in economics in 2018. I didn’t do any internships because I’m an idiot who wanted to enjoy my college summers with my friends back home. Main goal in life at this point is having my own little not insane family like my upbringing.
Queue the dominos falling leading to my current feeling of loss of sanity. I stayed with my mother for a year working at a small construction office in an administrative capacity so I could pay off what off few loans I had before I would move to the big apple, where I have no family or nyc friends who moved to other states for grad school, to get a place with my girlfriend of 5 years at that point in 2019. Boss loved me and hated to see me go. I start at another construction company’s accounting department in NYC and quit after a few weeks since it felt like almost like a cult which sounds weird and I know I’m a fucking idiot for quitting even though I felt I had to go.
Anyways I find out about the process of joining the NYPD and how well they pay. It’s always something I had considered in the back of my mind since I’ve had family in law enforcement and the military and cops at least in my own life as a kid they had essentially acted as heroes being the ones that would stop my mother’s husbands from borderline killing her or my and my little brother in the past. I was naive and just wanted to make the world a better place thinking even if there was corruption I could be a good example to others and try to change things from within given everything I’d gone through in my life so far. So, I began the 2-3 year process and started looking for work to hold me over in the meantime. After a few months, I find a job with a tiny real estate developer as an assistant. Unfortunately, the exempt salaried pay was garbage and my boss was the biggest raging asshole I have ever had the displeasure of being stuck in a 6x10 windowless room for 3 months with. I’m talking shit on all of his employees in office and out. The one time I fuck up he screams over the phone, hangs up in rage, just to call back 30 seconds later to keep raging. I said like a complete fucking idiot fuck that shit and quit.
Surprise surprise I quit march 2020 like 2 weeks before covid went from “hmm china is having his little flu thing. Next up listen to our interview with kim kardashian!” to “HOLY FUCKING SHIT RED ALERT THE WORLD IS ON FUCKING FIRE SHUT ER DOWN PLEASE GOD SAVE THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN”. I struggled to find work but thankfully my girlfriend was doing well enough to hold us over as my savings drained. After like 4 months of nothing I said fuck it and got a security license since I was seeing those jobs everywhere (trying not to think too much about the ones getting shot for enforcing masks). I was hired direct at a luxury senior living place in Manhattan a month later with a pay rate higher than I’d ever had before. It was just finishing construction (which ended up getting dragged out a year longer) so my boss had me work 3pm-midnight with the promise I’d go 8am-5pm when we opened. That was honestly the hardest year of my life until we opened in mid 2021. Imagine Covid, plus working when everyone is off and being off when everyone is sleeping, and working weekends just barely having social contact outside the first few hours of work. That shit fucks with you. I am ashamed and a little scared to say there were a few times I stared a little too long at the city streets from our 17th floor rooftop gardens during my patrols.
Anyways, things got better when we opened. My bosses, coworkers, and later residents loved me. Always came to me to shoot the shit, help them with projects like excel or other computer stuff, training new staff on building functions and safety shit. I even got bumped to $32/hr and had our IT guy showing me the ropes and helping him with some of what he did. Then the NYPD finally came knocking. It took a few months but I passed all their tests. As I got further along my girlfriend of 7 years at that point grew more and more uneasy at the prospect and all my NYC friends were totally against it bordering on pleading me not to do it since all the BLM protests (which I supported) were still pretty recent. I was still just naive thinking if I could just get in I could change it for the better and how change has to start somewhere even if it’s just one person. Didn’t matter though because it all exploded when I finally got the email telling me to report to the academy. Girlfriend lost it. Pleading/sobbing for me not to do it. I just kept telling her she would see it wasn’t so bad after I started. I just had to take the shot and she would see. Then I got the ultimatum she still claims she doesn’t remember saying. She said she wouldn’t leave but didn’t think she could have kids with me if I went through with it. That shit hit me straight in the fucking heart. I emailed them to pull my candidacy. I wasn’t going to nuke this 7 year relationship for a fucking job.
Apparently they didn’t get the memo emailing me or leaving voicemails that they could squeeze me in if I wanted every time a new academy was coming up. Anyways I left the security job in June 2022 (idiot again I know) since my security license was expiring, Covid seemed to be finally chilling out now that everyone had our shots, and there wasn’t any upward movement happening even though my executive director would promise and promise how far he said he could see me going. Went to Europe got engaged with the lady which was about time after 8 years, but then struggled for months to get any sort of admin role like I’d had in the past.
I eventually said fuck it let’s try IT since I liked working that guy at my last job and have always been good with computers, but never got into programming beyond an intro comp sci class in college. Anyways 4 months later (could’ve been faster I know) after a lot of self study I got my comptia A+, Network+, and finally Security+ in mid to late April try to get my foot in door. After a month of applying and also turning 27 I’ve got nothing to show for it. Then I get a call today and freaked out going through all the protocols and shit in my head mentally prepping for any questions an employer might ask. I answer and IT’S THE FUCKING NYPD AGAIN TELLING ME I CAN GET IN THE ACADEMY IF I COME IN FOR A FUCKING MINI MEDICAL. Completely deflated I tell the lady I had already told my investigating officer to pull my candidacy which I guess he never did and she officially took me off the list.
After she hung up I feel like something just kind of snapped. I wanted to fucking scream and felt like I’m just spitting in the face of the universe for finally shutting down this life path for good after they’ve tried to pull me in so many times while I’ve ignored them while at the same time getting rejection after rejection from company after company. I know I’m not crazy for not being willing to give up such a long lasting relationship for something I don’t even really believe in anymore, but I feel crazy turning my nose up at the one employer who will look past my only crimes of having a fucking resume gap or not staying with the same company for 40 years. Thankfully my fiancée is now making over 6 figures and can afford to take care of us while I search, but I just feel like such a fucking failure after clawing my way out of poverty and the warzone that was my mother’s household as soon as the front door closed doing what I thought I was supposed to do to achieve socioeconomic mobility and I have nothing to show for it other than being a damn leech off my future wife while I drown in this shit.
Anyways, it just feels nice to write that all down for once. I guess I hope maybe this can help someone somehow. I’m not giving up, but goddamn this shit is hard. I hope y’all are having a better day and better luck.

I got a refinance on my home $400k at 5.99% with the intention of buying real estate and turning them into positive cash-flowing properties. My NOI target for these properties is 12%, but it appears I can get that (or close to it) with just the 10%-12% dividend yield from JEPI and JEPQ.
I'm thinking of just forgetting about real estate and just buying JEPI and JEPQ instead. It seems I get what I want from Real Estate (12% annual return) with JEPI and JEPQ without dealing with the headache of property management, high-interest rates, etc.
Thoughts? For some context, I'm currently 25 years old. I have a lot of investments focused on capital appreciation already, and for this strategy, I'm focusing on income generation.
All in might be a bit too much, but I'm definitely considering putting 50%-60%.

I'm thinking someone living in rural Madagascar that wants a steak regularly probably needs to have his own cows and butcher all the cuts themselves because there is no butcher round the corner with freshly avaliable meat everyday in convenient clean throwaway packaging.
Someone in Switzerland might no longer go to the butcher because it is too expensive and also cut meat from larger chunks in supermarkets as needed (obviously not the exact same situation) or maybe drive across the border on purpose where meat is cheaper. Rural Madagascar also has to worry about every gram of waste they generate or dumping it personally otherwise no one will collect it for them and it will just accumulate near their home. In Switzerland they have to know which container to use and when to wheel it out on the street (which day) otherwise they get fined and do all the manual sorting themselves (inconvenient).
Whereas the middle income countries have a lot more pampered services (butchers in supermarkets that do everything for you for no extra cost, waste collection where you basically dump anything and everything at any time of the day and by nightfall it gets collected, no questions asked), plastic bags for free, etc.
The same goes for housing - people in poor countries live in terrible unsafe and cramped housing. People in rich countries pay a lot of money to also live in very cramped, old unsafe real estate because everything is so expensive. And the countries in between have mansions, two cars and driveways for pennies, with drivers, maids, etc.

The wife and I recently purchased an acre in colorado. The real estate agent and seller said that there was a single water main that dead ended just at our properties frontage. I don't have this in writing.
The city confirmed the line was present and could be tied into depending on where on the lot we wanted to build. I do have this in writing. This was something we could work with, so we signed, and the property is ours. No mortage.
The city is going through changes, and the employees do not have the most accurate information. It turns out they are mistaken, and the water line is abandoned and unusable.
After talking to people in town, it turns out the the seller and likely the real estate agent were aware the line was abandoned and failed to disclose this to us before the sale.
The cost to extend a new water main is significant, in the high tens of thousands due to the cities' rules regarding mains extensions (it must loop around the block and tie into another main). It is likely that we will be on the hook for the bill. This is a financial burden we are not prepared for.
I hope to settle without getting lawyers involved unless necessary, but if so, I am not sure if I even have a case and who I should even be going after at this point.
I am hoping to request the seller refund a percentage of the sale price for the misinformation. (Nothing was noted in the disclosure agreement)
I can also request that the city cover a percentage of the water mains extensions. (Email evidence, they said it was possible)
I am not quite sure what a reasonable percentage for either would be.
For arguments sake, let's say the property was $100'000 and the water extension is another $100'000.

WINTER TIDE by Ruthanna Emrys is a book that deserves more love. So, for Pride Month, I’ve decided to give it a review. The book ticks most of the boxes for what I love in fiction: not only is it an H.P. Lovecraft-inspired story but it is also something that reinterprets the Mythos for a modern audience. Like Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff or my own Cthulhu Armageddon, it’s a work which tackles HPL’s controversial elements head on and does something interesting with them.
In the case of Winter Tide, it is a sequel to the novella A Litany of Earth which was originally published on Tor’s website and is actually available at the back of the novel. I suggest readers who want to fully enjoy this work read both A Litany of Earth first as well as H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow over Innsmouth, which remains his most famous work as well as the work which this is a perspective flip as well as continuation of. This book can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading both, personally. Hell, I’d even suggest reading the novella at the back of the book first.
For those of you unfamiliar with The Shadow over Innsmouth, the premise is a young New England scholar heads to the titular town of Innsmouth. It is a decaying hellhole of a fishing village with the locals all looking grossly deformed with huge eyes, scaly skin, and frog-like bodies. Gradually, the protagonist discovers the Innsmouthers have been interbreeding with a evil race of fish men called the Deep Ones and worshiping the dread god Cthulhu. The protagonist calls the US government down on them and they’re all arrested before being herded into camps.
Ruthanna Emrys takes this rather horrifying ending, if you treat them as people rather than monsters, and makes a series about the camps’ (almost) sole survivor. In this universe, the Deep Ones were just a peaceful aquatic race which was unfairly maligned by both H.P. Lovecraft’s protagonist as well as the US government. The same camps which held Japanese Americans during WW2 contain the leftovers of the Innsmouth Raid. Aphra is traumatized by the event and simply wants to get on with her life–but the US government isn’t done with her.
Aphra Marsh’s story is basically the H.P. Lovecraft version of Wicked where up is down, black is white, and the Mythos is good rather than evil. The US government hideously wronged Aphra and her people but have the gall to want her help in dealing with magical matters. Magic isn’t evil in this universe but it’s not “safe” either and plenty of humans are messing with forces which could end up destroying the world by accident. So, Aphra, heads off to join an FBI team trying to find a Russian spy in Miskatonic University.
The book advertises itself as a spy thriller but it’s mostly a drama about Aphra coming to terms with the appropriation of her people’s books and cultural artifacts by Miskatonic University. She has to go to New England in order to look at her people’s own work and request them from the library which stole them. Meanwhile, she also has to deal with a variety of personages who want to take her religious practices then remove all context from them in order to make a purely scientific form of magic.
I found these elements of the book very timely with things like Trevor Noah talking about how museums in Europe refuse tor return African art taken during the colonial era as well as things like Mindfulness that attempt to remove all Buddhism from Buddhist practices. Some of this is intended by Ruthanna Emrys while other is just happy coincidence I’m sure. The book is never preachy but is definitely written from the perspective of a minority coping with having her culture turned “trendy.” It makes me wonder what she’d think of Cthulhu slippers since he’s their version of Jesus.
I liked the eccentric cast of characters which the author assembles around Aphra Marsh. Spector is a true blue Captain America sort of patriot but you have to wonder if he realizes just how much he’s re-opening old wounds in his attempt to make amends for his country’s crimes. Professor Turnball is a delightful character and I liked the slow revelations about how her relationships (like her maid that the Great Race of Yith drove off). Barlow and his team of idiot FBI magicians also served as fun antagonists, even if I sympathized with them more than I should have. It reminded me a bit of a Mythos version of Agent Carter but with less action and more melancholy.
Does the book have any flaws? Well, I’m going to be remiss if I didn’t say the book is sometimes a bit on the slow side. There’s also the fact Aphra Marsh is not particularly interested in finding out the identity of the Russian spy in Miskatonic University’s library. She gets around to it eventually but there’s never a confrontation or dramatic payoff. Instead, she’s sidetracked by her “fellow” FBI agents and visiting Innsmouth for the first time in years. For those wanting Aphra to get involved in spywork, it’s a bit of a disappointment. This is a small flaw, however. One simply needs to understand what sort of book this is.
There’s also the fact this is a love letter to Lovecraft (Cthulhu, Deep Ones, geometric magic) but not necessarily Lovecraftian (scary unknowable dread) despite its use of the characters. To invoke my Wicked comparison above, this is not a book about how the Mythos is particularly scary to anyone but people who see cosmic insignifigance as a sanity blasting thing by itself. Both the religious and arreligious both have often taken the view mankind is a small thing and this is a book where HPL’s creatures are merely weird rather than terrifying. You’ll appreciate this book more if you know the Mythos inside and out but also have to leave your prejudices the cult of Cthulhu eats babies at the door. Aphra isn’t about to find out her people were secretly evil all along like some HPL protagonists did.
Pride Month wise, this is both a book by a LGBT author as well as something that is sprinkled with a cast full of gay. Aphra herself is somewhat ambiguous in her sexuality with the author she’s a asexual woman who has lesbian romantic tones. This quality which, sadly, she is blind to the feelings of her companion regarding her. The FBI agent assisting Aphra is also deeply closeted, understandably so given the time period and his place of employment.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this book and I think your enjoyment will be affected by how much you know (and love) H.P. Lovecraft while also being willing to put up with some good-natured criticism of his concepts. Aphra and the Deep Ones are a bit too nice at times but still likable characters. Besides, you don’t want to give them any sorts of characteristics that might make the treatment of them seem justified (especially when drawing parallels to real life history). It’s, overall, an extremely entertaining novel and good scifi.

WINTER TIDE by Ruthanna Emrys is a book that deserves more love. So, for Pride Month, I’ve decided to give it a review. The book ticks most of the boxes for what I love in fiction: not only is it an H.P. Lovecraft-inspired story but it is also something that reinterprets the Mythos for a modern audience. Like Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff or my own Cthulhu Armageddon, it’s a work which tackles HPL’s controversial elements head on and does something interesting with them.
In the case of Winter Tide, it is a sequel to the novella A Litany of Earth which was originally published on Tor’s website and is actually available at the back of the novel. I suggest readers who want to fully enjoy this work read both A Litany of Earth first as well as H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow over Innsmouth, which remains his most famous work as well as the work which this is a perspective flip as well as continuation of. This book can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading both, personally. Hell, I’d even suggest reading the novella at the back of the book first.
For those of you unfamiliar with The Shadow over Innsmouth, the premise is a young New England scholar heads to the titular town of Innsmouth. It is a decaying hellhole of a fishing village with the locals all looking grossly deformed with huge eyes, scaly skin, and frog-like bodies. Gradually, the protagonist discovers the Innsmouthers have been interbreeding with a evil race of fish men called the Deep Ones and worshiping the dread god Cthulhu. The protagonist calls the US government down on them and they’re all arrested before being herded into camps.
Ruthanna Emrys takes this rather horrifying ending, if you treat them as people rather than monsters, and makes a series about the camps’ (almost) sole survivor. In this universe, the Deep Ones were just a peaceful aquatic race which was unfairly maligned by both H.P. Lovecraft’s protagonist as well as the US government. The same camps which held Japanese Americans during WW2 contain the leftovers of the Innsmouth Raid. Aphra is traumatized by the event and simply wants to get on with her life–but the US government isn’t done with her.
Aphra Marsh’s story is basically the H.P. Lovecraft version of Wicked where up is down, black is white, and the Mythos is good rather than evil. The US government hideously wronged Aphra and her people but have the gall to want her help in dealing with magical matters. Magic isn’t evil in this universe but it’s not “safe” either and plenty of humans are messing with forces which could end up destroying the world by accident. So, Aphra, heads off to join an FBI team trying to find a Russian spy in Miskatonic University.
The book advertises itself as a spy thriller but it’s mostly a drama about Aphra coming to terms with the appropriation of her people’s books and cultural artifacts by Miskatonic University. She has to go to New England in order to look at her people’s own work and request them from the library which stole them. Meanwhile, she also has to deal with a variety of personages who want to take her religious practices then remove all context from them in order to make a purely scientific form of magic.
I found these elements of the book very timely with things like Trevor Noah talking about how museums in Europe refuse tor return African art taken during the colonial era as well as things like Mindfulness that attempt to remove all Buddhism from Buddhist practices. Some of this is intended by Ruthanna Emrys while other is just happy coincidence I’m sure. The book is never preachy but is definitely written from the perspective of a minority coping with having her culture turned “trendy.” It makes me wonder what she’d think of Cthulhu slippers since he’s their version of Jesus.
I liked the eccentric cast of characters which the author assembles around Aphra Marsh. Spector is a true blue Captain America sort of patriot but you have to wonder if he realizes just how much he’s re-opening old wounds in his attempt to make amends for his country’s crimes. Professor Turnball is a delightful character and I liked the slow revelations about how her relationships (like her maid that the Great Race of Yith drove off). Barlow and his team of idiot FBI magicians also served as fun antagonists, even if I sympathized with them more than I should have. It reminded me a bit of a Mythos version of Agent Carter but with less action and more melancholy.
