Hi all,
I organise a coding club that runs once a month in central Cambridge. As it's half term we have a fair few spots free today, so I thought I'd drop a message here to let any parents know about it.
Totally free, for anyone aged 7 - 17. We are part of the
Coderdojo organisation:
www.coderdojo.com It's from 10am - 1pm at Makespace on Mill Lane. Feel free to drop by any time during those hours to give it a try or even just take a look and see what it's all about.
Happy weekend!

2023.06.03 09:31 PoeticallyBroken Need hair help (18m)
Graduation is just around the corner, like literally next week, and I want to get a haircut to look atleast somewhat presentable. I've been growing my hair out for a while now, its maybe ~ 3" in length on the back and ~6-7" in length on the front. I plan to keep growing it out until maybe an inch over shoulder length. Realistically I wont be getting another haircut for 6 months, maybe even up to a year. I want someone that will give me something to help it grow out efficiently, not someone who will cut it too short, wasting months of progress lol. I'm a male and have straight hair, not curly unfortunately. Money is a big constraint, as I'm still a student. After browsing this sub, I've heard good things about viriles, but theres too many options and 60$ Is still a bit too steep for me. I've also heard about love lanes, but their prices make it an absolute no go, and studio 17, who's prices i couldnt find online. I'd still be willing to pay ~60 however if it was absolutely worth it. Im also willing to go out to New York if i need to. Im very indecisive, so please recommend me a barbestylist that suits my needs, I need this lol.

2023.06.03 09:25 crogonint List of Alternate Barovian Maps which are Needed
I'm pretty sure that the majority of Barovian content creators have already seen some version of this list. I actually went back to update my original post of the list to discover that I never made my own post of it! I put together the first version of this list a couple of years ago. I'm pretty sure this is the most complete list of its kind anywhere: Alternate areas of Barovia that are commonly needed, besides the commonly published CoS specific battlemaps:
0) The (Dark) Carnival - nobody ever makes maps / assets for this, even though gobs of people always throw it in to their campaign, even though it's old as crap. I understand that there's a Carnival Realm in the new VRGtR book.. I'll probably never use the realm-carnival, but that's a second place the Dark Carnival maps/assets could be used. There are also a trio of third party Ravenloft carnival modules as well that they could be used in.
1) Battlemap sized maps of the towns. At LEAST a 5 foot per square / hex map for the tiger chase. (Obviously modern VTT platforms don't actually need the grid on the map. ;) )
2) Random shops, stables, blacksmiths and generic places the party is likely to go anyway.
3) Generic encounter locations.. country roads / rivers / bridges and combinations of the three. It sounds dumb because you can get generic encounter maps like that anywhere.. but it would be AWESOME to have matching Barovian roads and Svalitch woods on all of your encounter maps. Don't forget the specific crossroads with the gallows from CoS.. I don't recall if there were hanging cages mentioned, but you could throw in some PNG options for them.
4) A covered bridge, including the roof, deck and under views. (To tack on to the Headless Horseman add-in.) The Woodcutters hut as well.
5) Besides the Carnival, there are a few other old school modules that people like to bolt on to CoS (Adam, etc. etc.).
6) DragnaCarta, MandysMod and Pyram King have all developed alternate encounters and a handful of setting that might be able to use an alternate map here and there. (Orphanage.) In particular, I recall battles in/near the bogs, on mountain sides with/without roads and watch towers. Military and outfitter style tent interiors and exteriors and camps placed.. you know what? Make those camps be PNG assets that could be dropped in a bog, next to a river or on a mountain side as needed. ;) I recall Lunch Break Heroes making an encounter for Borgia/Borca, but I don't recall if they made any scenarios / encounters for Barovia. I got a special request for Beneath the Abbey.
7) The Interactive Tome of Strahd sends the party back in time and would be a PHENOMENAL set of maps to expand Barovia. Seriously, you could drop those on DMsGuild and make some bank. Some additionally pre-Strahd bright and shiny versions of the village of Barovia and other basic maps might be nice for some throw-back adventures.
8) Retro Castle Ravenloft.. Castle Ravenloft fully restored to its former glory! (Castle Barovia? I picture it as more of a walled garrison, looking like a giant stone bubble from a distance, but it did have at least one tower overlooking the cliff.) We know that the old pre-Strahd castle had multiple floors located in roughly the same place as Castle Ravenloft, but with significantly different floor plans, as the ghosts walk staircases and pass through doorways that don't exist anymore. :D (Important side-note: Strahd did not grow up in Castle Ravenloft. I believe that there is one (1) painting of him looking out over Yesterhill, through the mists at a vision of the castle he grew up in, but I don't think anyone has ever tackled it.)
9) The caverns and the alter area in and under the Pillarstone of Ravenloft (from Expedition to Ravenloft) are frequently added in to CoS. I've never seen a map of a hidden cavern entrance in the Svalitch woods, let alone a set of creepy Barovian caverns.. or the Castle side of the entrance, for that matter.
10) Around a decade ago, some weirdo drew an artistic image of Castle Ravenloft with the foundation bedrock rotted away under it. I'd like to see a detailed elevation map of the curtain wall and gatehouse with the bedrock still under the curtain wall, because that irritates me to no end. NOBODY would build a massive curtain wall on a questionable foundation. Reference Vlads actual castle (which is admittedly ten times smaller than Ravenloft) for a rather specific example of a (THE) castle built on the side of a cliff. As I recall, if looking at the gatehouse, the left side and back left corner of Vlads actual castle are protected by a cliff, and that's where the inspiration for Castle Ravenloft came from.
11)Speaking of elevation, at the other end of Castle Ravenloft are balconies and windows jutting out over the cliff. I'd love to see detailed maps of those areas, an 'ant sized' map of the Svalitch woods and Barovia as seen from the castle, and an elevation map of the cliff-side reaching from the Svalitch woods up past the windows and balconies to the Curtain wall. Parties occasionally decide to attempt to scale the cliff. Having a cliff and curtain wall that actually matches would be awesome.
12) Odd ball areas we never see. The druids must have huts or a village somewhere. The Roc must have a nest somewhere. The Mad Mage in Barovia has one of either a tower / cavern / pocket dimension somewhere. We could use Barovian flavored versions of all three. Oh, and the woods and encounters with said mage on the backside of the lake.. so a lake / forested area with spread out trees for players to run in terror or attempt to attack at range.. or whatever.
13) UNDER Lake Zarovich, there are a handful of generic encounters. There are also a few river monster encounters, generally near the Berez Swamp, could use a lair map and an underwater river encounter map, Barovia flavored. Speaking of Berez, I've never seen a detailed large scale swamp map for the Berez Swamp.. let alone the whole town being overrun by the swamp.
14) A proper Berez Swamp. A full sized swamp, with river banks, fields of cattail and reeds, murky backwaters, underwater groves of trees, and a couple of dozen oddly shaped islets and sandbanks.. a few dead logs.. not to mention a proper full sized assortment of Berez town ruins.
15) What's the village in the Adventurer's Guild Supplements?? Orasnou! There's a tiny village there (the size most people depict Berez as, because the CoS book doesn't describe the whole town of Berez properly). So that map is needed, along with.. 4 interior maps, if I recall? (Probably more, + a manor.) As well as an alternate werewolf lair and a few others, like a Barovian bluff, again if I recall off of the top of my head. I've had requests for the Gundarak villages Teufeldorf, Zeidenburg and Renika, as well as the other minor villages and..
16) The complete map of Barovia, post Grand Conjunction (done in standard modern style/graphics).
17) Various encounters have been depicted on Mount Baratok. Which would be a stark stone mountain, snowy and generally above the treeline, not like the hilly tree covered mountains where Argynvostholt and the Roc and etc. are located. I think a largish rocky encounter map of the mountainside would be the first needed. I (seem to) recall a three tiered monastery built on the side of a cliff, with a freshwater spring enclosed that would require an elevation map along with three small interioexterior maps showing the wooden stairs going up and down the cliff-side. I recall one encounter involving a lai small cave sized area.
18) Lots of people want Van Richtens magic shop and other stuff described in his escapades. We could also use a handful of Vistani Vardos and Camps. If I recall, there are only two described in the CoS book, but there are many more tribes of Vistani than that, and we're told that they move around frequently. If might be easier to provide PNG files for the vardos, outfitter tents and assets for a large scale camp. Come to think of it, there aren't a whole lot of tokens for those smallish horses they use either, so someone might whip up 10-12 smallish shaggy horses with unique patterns to show off. They don't care one ounce for a horses pedigree, and are more than happy to keep unique looking mongrel horses as their personal caravan animals. They use mountain horse stock when breeding their horses, so they would be a bit hairier and stockier then say an Arabian.. just scaled closer to a pony size. Donkey size! They're donkey sized horses. :D ..real donkey size, if I recall 5e has some weirdness going on with their official donkey/wagon sizes that makes no sense at all for Vardos sized horses and wagons like the Vistani would have.
19) The valley where the village of Barovia is located is described as a massive fertile farming area, yet we never see any medieval farms, ranches, graineries or farmers markets for Barovia. Definitely need a few of those. Barovian farmers and ranchers would SPECIFICALLY all have the buildings that (in the real world) later became fortifications, Thick werewolf proof walls and heavily barricaded doors everywhere. No window on the ground floor. Livestock was housed indoors, in enclosed courtyards with family areas wrapped around them, or with the animals on the ground floor and the family living above on the second floor. Horse stalls and farrowing areas would be fenced off within the area. Graineries would be large round wooden buildings with barricaded doors and sturdy out-buildings. 10 foot tall max, today's 4-5 story tall graineries are a modern invention. There would probably be a large stone community grainery far on the other side of the valley from the Village of Barovia. for that matter, there ought to be a functioning grainery or warehouse somewhere between the Village of Barovia and Bonegrinder. ALSO, if Bonegrinder is no longer being used as a mill, there would HAVE to be another windmill or waterwheel driven mill somewhere else in Barovia. Many artists have envisioned a water-wheel grainery on the River Ivlis near the Village of Barovia. Corn cribs would be on the second floor of a barn for drying grain, doubling up to dry bales of hay, not primarily as a hay loft. PNGs for 2-3 styles of fencing and gates, water troughs, and some medieval horse drawn plows and rakes would be nice. Dog kennels!! Every farm would probably have it's own horse pasture or rink with a training post, and a dog kennel or run for dogs to run during the day. You know those giant mastiffs that the Barovian nobles are so fond of? Yeah, the farmers in the fertile valley near Barovia would be the only ones rich enough to be able to afford to raise those pups for the nobles. Somewhere out here would be a medieval rancher set up to raise mastiff puppies with an assortment of full grown mastiffs. Mongrel pups or runts would be sold off to neighboring farms at a discount. Roaming wolves would stay FAR away from them, and werewolf packs would likely attack them for any reason at all (if they could find a way in to the basin). I picture a LARGE farmers market and stockyards just inside the River Ivlis bridge of the Valley of Barovia. We know that Barovia is a trade center.. so there MUST be one. The bridge would offer protection if needed, and it would be the closest place farmers and ranchers could set up to provide commerce with the other villages and domains and still have the protection of being inside the gates. Hmm.. they might have a dirt race track there for showing off horses going up for sale. Make that very probably, The Vistani/Romani are famous for defending their mountain horses at the drop of a hat. This would be the main place of commerce for farmers goods in Barovia. This is (the main area) where Vistani Caravans would import and export farm goods in to and out of Barovia.
20) There would absolutely be homestead (small) sized farms and ranches carved out up in mountain valleys or even on mountain sides facing south. In fact, a south facing mountain side might get enough sunlight to raise delicate crops, spices and herbs, whereas most of Barovia can't, due to the mists blocking the sunlight. Also, a couple of mountain pastures with matching rocks / trees bordering them would be nice. Honestly though, if you pass out some rock and tree assets that match the ones you already use, anybody could throw together their own mountain pastures, or even their own valley pastures. Rows of crops are hard to find though! You could easily have scenarios of wolves/werewolves hunting the party in a cornfield.. but there are no Barovian cornfield battlemaps. ACTUALLY, I don't think I have any battlemap sized crop assets, and I probably have the largest collection of map assets around. You could probably sell these farming assets/maps on DriveThruRPG and DMsGuild as well, I've never seen them anywhere. ..OR you might ask Forgotten Adventures or Tom Cartos to throw some together, whatever seems clever. :) I've been asked specifically to try to get Yaedrag (barbarian-esque village in the mountains that Dragna wrote up) made up.
21) Jenny Greenteeth's Hut.. perhaps a grove of her untainted trees from the Quivering Forest? (Also the Glumpen Swamp and Vanishing Hills, various locations within these.) I picture the Quivering Forest loaded with fruit and nut trees and songbirds fighting for real estate (the text mentions angry squirrels).. surrounded by classic Svalitch Woods half-dead spooky trees. ;) I recall seeing a couple of versions that roughly followed the description given in DDAL04, but they're just a hut, not the whole barrow surrounding her hut as described. Additionally, many artists have upscaled her hut to be a small trading post, and put it on wooden poles, swamp style (never seen a battlemap of it, though). Lots of room for creative renditions there. :)
22) Another thing that I haven't seen ANYBODY making is small abbeys. The hills and mountains of Barovia are said to be littered with small abbeys. ..some of them abandoned, some not.
23) Abandoned mansions and manors. Strahd massacred the noble families of Barovia for their involvement in his father's murder. There is one legend of a nobleman possessed by a demon that Strahd left alive, as a curse 'worse than death'. At any rate, there ought to be a handful of abandoned / haunted mansions and manors dotting the Barovian countryside for the party to stumble in to (or check out due to a hook dropped by an informative villager).
24) There are currently NO mines in the CoS version of Barovia.. bizarre for a mountain country. It would suit that some of those decimated noble families ran some mines that have since been abandoned. Of course, it wouldn't do to host your standard monsters in a Barovian mine. I'm thinking Lair of the White Worm. Something more horrifying than dungeoneering.
25) It's been mentioned that instead of murdering the losers from the werewolf trials, they might be shipped off to be slaves in a mine, or to a plantation in the swamp. The plantation would be stick construction, as you would expect in a swamp, they would collect tubers and reeds that grow in the swamp, not traditional plantation type crops.
26) The various Barovian villages NOT included on Schleys map of (Central) Barovia usually have a town sized map plotted out and published somewhere, but no really decent overview maps or battlemap sized maps of them exist. (This need might easily be filled by a couple of handfuls of generic Barovian village buildings, field-stone and dirt street assets, and sundry village constructions.
27) Besides the Gates of Barovia, there are supposed to be watch-towers dotting the landscape as well. An operational watchtower and a couple of partially ruined ones would be awesome.
Assets nobody has made like the Dark Carnival and lake/river encounters and the Mad Mages various lair options would be the most needed. I simply don't understand why EVERY CoS map developer doesn't provide matching roads, forests, rivers and generic shops with matching Barovian assets. The maps I mentioned which you could make money selling on DriveThruRPG and DMsGuild (to me) would just be silly NOT to make. ...Van Richtens magic shop is requested a LOT. When the party first enters Barovia, I can picture them being chased in to a fortified farm by a pack of dire wolves / werewolves at dusk (perhaps the first couple of farms won't unbarricade their doors). I'm sure you can see the utility of the rest. Will everybody need a Roc nest on a cliff above the forest? No. Will DMs derail their campaign for a minute just for the opportunity to make the party loot a Roc nest? Yes. :
Finally, I would note that since I wrote this list, a few cartographers have added some of the above locations to their Library, but the vast majority of these are as of yet, untouched. :)

2023.06.03 08:57 aquiferous Sister is a wannabe golden child - cut off my parents but now my sister frustrates me and I want to expose her lies
I guess when I was a child I was the one who was academically successful and good at violin/etc./whatever - I was incredibly self motivated because I liked these things but despite all this success my parents always found something to criticize regarding my clumsiness and lack of organizational skills (either ADHD or the CPTSD they gave me) or got triggered by my RBF and demand that I be friendlier and “respectful” (because I am a Korean girl I need to grovel for abusive and stupid people - why would I act like a brainless idiot and do aegyo if I wasn’t even benefiting from benevolent sexism anyway and was getting SCREAMED AT???). I never felt like the golden child because I was miserable and never got praised even though I was the successful Asian kid all the Asian parents were comparing their kids to and my younger sister was the unacademic but pretty one who didn’t have (justified) rage fits so it all evened out imo.
Honestly there is so much additional context but now I’m just going to dump what I wrote for offmychest:
Honestly I feel like sometimes I need a sanity check??? I only realized the batshit insane stuff my family members have been pulling a few months ago when I finally had a breakdown and told someone else about their behavior.
In any case since my sister always was the sweet talker and kissed my parents’ asses I guess I was gaslit into thinking I was the asshole; sure she hasn’t had it easy either with our crazy parents but she constantly excuses their abuse because it makes her feel superior. The past year she started college around my hometown and I started putting the pieces together after thinking more about what she tells people.
Basically she always identified more than I did with being Korean (our family immigrated to the US when we were fairly young), but she now speaks with a semi-Korean accent in English even though she’s been in the US since she was an infant. She joined a cultural club geared towards Korean international students even though a less cliquey one for Korean students in general exists; I have no idea what sort of fucking origin story she told these people to pass as an “international student.” In addition she has apparently been telling her peers that our parents are moving back to Korea soon, which is patently untrue because I confirmed that before I snapped and stopped talking to them. The final straw for me was finding her Reddit account - she was also fucking lying about growing 3 inches in the span of a year (and got triggered when someone pointed out that this is biologically difficult for girls after puberty), inflated her ACT score to humbly drop some study tips to other students, and overall just really hammering in that English wasn’t her first language (I guess this was an attempt to earn praise from internet randos for writing in what is pretty much her native language). Recently she made an instagram post about her flight to Korea this summer and included such a SNEAKY view of her Korean passport that is expired by nearly a decade because we renounced the citizenship.
I guess I sound really salty in the post but I genuinely cannot believe she is getting away with this shit - she was always pretty manipulative as a child but I guess finally going to an elite college empowered her narcissism (she definitely lied on her resume and personal statement and was a B range student before Zoom classes), and there’s a reason she received straight rejections from lower ranked schools until she lucked out with a KOREAN ALUMNI INTERVIEWER she swindled into thinking she was such a sweet and wonderful girl. Of course, college rankings don’t matter that much (I go to another college as elite) but it’s definitely the name brand that lets her get away with being such a simpering asshole now because Korean people LOVE appearances!
I mean I was always disillusioned with Korean culture because I had to lean more into being the “smart” daughter; in any case Korean people would be super explicit about the fact that I am the ugly sister and would generally be offended when I refused to be bubbly and affectionate (why in the world should I grovel politely for the tackiest and rudest people in existence???). Now my younger sister, armed with her plastic surgery (yes, I know she is a teenager), name brand college, and superficial politeness is just getting more and more with her grift. If she was just real with me and straight up said she acts like this to succeed, I would appreciate the honestly and might even have some respect for her, but she fundamentally refuses to ever present herself in a disadvantageous light.
I don’t know what to do anymore; the more attention and success she achieves the more unethically she behaves. Would appreciate a sanity check/advice since whenever I say I have sibling issues vaguely people assume I’m just a salty conflict-loving grinch so then I need to clarify my sister is actually unhinged.

I use an egg (and egg replacement) - free recipe for chocolate chip cookies that uses baking powder, baking soda, and a wateoil mix that equals the liquid content of an egg, but I'm not sure if that would work or not in this case. 2023.06.03 08:21 Aztaloth My thoughts on building in the new 2000D
So I thought I would give my thoughts and advice on building in the 2000D for anyone else who has thought about getting one.
First off, I am no professional, however I have been building computers since the mid 90s. I have built everything from old ISA beige boxes to dual loop custom water setups. So I have a few years of experience.
Part 1. The planning:
This case is surprisingly easy to plan for but it is an ITX box so you do need to put some thought into it.
Air cooling options are extremely limited but the reality is that this case is made for an AIO. Some consideration will need to be given to the length and flexibility of the AIO tubes.
GPU choices are not very limited at all. I managed to squeeze an XFX 7900XTX Merc in mine. The length was a bit tight but this card is about as long as they come. Thickness was fine and the case would in fact fit a slightly thicker card easily. I would however be very concerned about a 40 series Nvidia card in here due to the clearance and issues with their power plugs. Also I am not sure I would use a card without a backplate.
Motherboard. This one almost got me. I used an Asus Strix Z790-I. Like most modern boards this has a shroud over the I/O. Due to the layout of the case this is very close to the lowest front fan. You have to install the fans 1st, and even so, you have to push on it a bit to get it to line up.
My chosen parts were as follows:
Intel 13900K
ASUS Strix Z790-I XFX 7900xtx Merc 310
2x16GB G.Skill TridentZ 6800 memory
2x 4TB Crucial NVME SSDs
SF1000-L PSU
Elite 150 Capellix XT. I know the screen is a waste. But I already had it.
Part 2. The build:
Building is surprisingly strait forward. But there are a few things to keep in mind.
As I mentioned above, the fans need to be installed first in the front. I had to remove my MB to be able to squeeze them in.
AIO needs to be installed with the tubes at the top. They will kink otherwise. Another minor note here, you can install the AIO too high on the bracket to allow it to be fitted into the case. An easy fix but easier to plan ahead.
I chose to bring cool air in through the front and then exhaust through the AIO on the side. The opposite would also work just fine and might drop CPU temps a couple degree.
The absolute worst part of the build is the PSU. I originally planned to use a Silverstone SX1000 I already owned. While there is plenty of room for the PSU, the bend s you need to get in the cables are difficult. I ended up using the new Corsair SF1000-L instead. The new smaller type 5 connectors allow for more flexibility in tight spaces.
I also had to reverse my normal order. Traditionally I plug the cables into the components first and then route them to the PSU. I found it much easier to do it the other way in this case.
Cable management is an absolute nightmare. A big part of this is the joy of Corsair RGB fans. But in general there is just no place to put the cables. I finally just zip ties the fan wires into two bundles and threw the commander pro in the bottom of the case. PSU cables are just just kind of there, and you will have very little space to route the GPU power cables between the side of the radiator and the back of the GPU. I finally just kind of gave up. You don’t see the inside anyway. 🤣
Part 3. Final results and issues:
The end results are great. The case looks good and tempts are the best I have seen in an ITX build. Honestly better than some ATX cases I have had. I run the CPU at a slight undervolt of -.075 and another slight undervolt on the GPU. CPU temps in testing maxed out in the mid 80s. And the GPU is staying in he mid-high 60s while playing destiny at 5120x1440 240hz.
I did make the mistake of pushing the case to close to the wall. Since the GPU is at the back this starved it of air and temps spiked until I figured out the problem.
Plugging in I/O is surprisingly difficult. The back panel is recessed and leaves you little room to work with wireless antenna are a real nightmare.
Speaking of which …. They needed to add about 1/2 inch to that space. I am not happy with how tight I had to bend the Displaypot cable to make it fit. I have seen cables with longer connector housings and they would flat out not fit. I am probably going to grab some 90 degree adapters to simplify this and for peace of mind.
As a nitpick, I am not a fan of how they did the power cable. The PSU is at the top of the case and they give you an extension then routes down the back using some cable ties. It just feels tacked on.
Overall I would say this is one of the better thought out ITX cases I have seen. It makes few compromises anyplace important and the end results are extremely good. It could use some improvements to be sure and it is priced higher than it should be. But the end results are good and I have to give Corsair credit on this one.

2023.06.03 07:55 TheLegendKeithDeroux The Indus Connection (Part 1 - India/Brahmin History): The Relationship Queen Victoria II has to Early Sikh Canadian Settler, Kesur Singh - Pierre Elliot Trudeau's Close Relationship to Indian President Indira Ghandi Before her Assassination & Operation Bluestar, Strengthened Indus Bonds (1897-1985)
| Disclaimer: The point of these stories is to uncover missed and hidden tales that many new generation Canadians are unaware of and overlook. The storied histories of people, ethnicities, neighborhoods are never told and for good reason. The information presented will be sourced and open to full discussion. This 3 Part series will uncover The Indus Connection - The Bind that Punjab (Informally Khalistan), India and Sri Lanka have to the Canadian Government, RCMP & CSIS. I've done my best to piece the significant information together in a timeline that allows the reader to understand these events clearer. (Information is cited; avoiding going full in depth) Kesur Singh was a Sikh officer of the 5th Cavalry who represented his regiment at Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee celebrations in London in 1897. This photo of him featured in The Navy and Army Illustrated of 10th Dec 1897. The description says 'He has on many occasions earned the praise of his superiors. He wears the medal and clasp for the Jowaki Expedition of 1877-78 and the medal with two clasps for Afghanistan (1878-80) where he was specially commended for devotion and courage on several occasions, and received the Order of Merit, and a special certificate from lord Roberts for his work at Sherpur. Kesur Singh & The First Sikh Canadian Settlers in Canada - Ties to the British Raj & How the Queen Elizabeth II Awarded him for his Valor in the British Indian Cavalry (1897) Kesur Singh, a Risaldar Major in the British India Army, is credited with being the first Sikh settler in Canada. He was amongst a group of Sikh officers who arrived in Vancouver on board Empress of India in 1897. They were on the way to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Sikhs found employment in laying the tracks of the Canadian Pacific Railway, in lumber mills and mines. Though they earned less than white workers, they made enough money to send some of it to India and make it possible for their relatives to immigrate to Canada. Indian Cavalry Passing the House of Parliament for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (1897) A notable moment in early Sikh history in Canada was in 1902 when settlers first arrived in Golden, British Columbia to work at the Columbia River Lumber Company. This was a theme amongst most early Punjabi Sikh settlers in Canada to find work in the agricultural and forestry sectors in British Columbia. Punjabi Sikhs became a prominent ethnic group within the sawmill workforce in British Columbia almost immediately after initial arrival to Canada. Punjabi Sikhs in Whitehorse, Yukon (April,1906) The early settlers in Golden built the first Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) in Canada and North America in 1905, which would later be destroyed by fire in 1926. The second Gurdwara to be built in Canada was in 1908 in Kitsilano (Vancouver), aimed at serving a growing number of Punjabi Sikh settlers who worked at nearby sawmills along False Creek at the time. The Gurdwara would later close and be demolished in 1970, with the temple society relocating to the newly built Gurdwara on Ross Street, in South Vancouver. As a result, the oldest existing Gurdwara in Canada today is the Gur Sikh Temple, located in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Built in 1911, the temple was designated as a national historic site of Canada in 2002 and is the third-oldest Gurdwara in the country. Later, the fourth Gurdwara to be built Canada was established in 1912 in Victoria on Topaz Avenue, while the fifth soon was built at the Fraser Mills (Coquitlam) settlement in 1913, followed a few years later by the sixth at the Queensborough (New Westminster) settlement in 1919, and the seventh at the Paldi (Vancouver Island) settlement, also in 1919. Early Sikh pioneers also settled in the Abbotsford area in 1905 and originally worked on farms and in the lumber industry. By 1906, there were about 1,500 Sikh workers living in Canada, among about 5,000 East Indians in total. Although most of the immigrants from South Asia at the time were Sikhs, local ignorance of Eastern religions led to them frequently being assumed to be Hindus. About 90% of these Sikhs lived in British Columbia. While Canadian politicians, missionaries, unions and the press were opposed to Asian workers. British Columbia industrialists were short of labor and thus Sikhs were able to get an early foothold at the turn of the 20th century in British Columbia. As with the large numbers of Chinese workers already present in Canada, many white workers resented those immigrants and directed their ill-will toward the Sikhs, who were easily recognized by their beards and turbans. Punjabis were accused of having a caste system, an idea that goes against the foundations of Sikhism. They were portrayed as being riddled with trachoma and as being unclean in general. To strengthen these racist characterizations, a song called White Canada Forever was created. All this eventually led to a boat of Sikhs arriving in Vancouver being sent to Victoria. In 1907, the year that Buckam Singh came to British Columbia from Punjab at the age of fourteen, Punjabis were forced to avoid the Anti-Oriental Riots of 1907 by staying indoors. Punjabi & Canadian Boy Drinking Soda (1972) Most of the Sikhs in Canada in 1907 were retired British army veterans and their families. These Punjabis had proved themselves as loyal soldiers in the British colonies in Asia and Africa. However, the Canadian Government did not prevent the use of the illegal scare tactics being used to monitor immigration and prevent Sikhs from seeking employment, and this soon resulted in the cessation of all Indian immigration to Canada. The Canadian Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier claimed that Indians were unsuited to life in the Canadian climate. However, in a letter to the viceroy, The Earl of Minto, Sir Wilfred voiced a different opinion, stating that the Chinese were the least adaptable to Canadian ways, whereas Sikhs, which he mistakenly referred to as Hindus, were the most adaptable. This sentiment changed after Buckam Singh's role in World War 1, which enabled more Sikhs to migrate to Canada. Takeaways During this Period: - The Immigration Act, 1910 came under scrutiny when a party of 39 Indians, mostly Sikhs, arriving on a Japanese ship, the Komagata Maru, succeeded in obtaining habeas corpus against the immigration department's order of deportation. The Canadian Government then passed a law intended to keep labourers and artisans, whether skilled or unskilled, out of Canada by preventing them from landing at any dock in British Columbia. As Canadian immigration became stricter, more Indians, most of them Sikhs, travelled south to the United States of America.
- The Komagata Maru Incident involved the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru, on which a group of people from British India attempted to immigrate to Canada in April 1914, but most were denied entry and forced to return to Budge Budge, Calcutta (present-day Kolkata). There, the Indian Imperial Police attempted to arrest the group leaders. A riot ensued, and they were fired upon by the police, resulting in the deaths of 22 people.
- Buckam Singh - Buckam Singh enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the spring of 1915. Buckam Singh was one of the earliest known Sikhs living in Ontario at the time as well as one of only 9 Sikhs known to have served with Canadian troops in the First World War. Private Buckam Singh served with the 20th Canadian Infantry Battalion in the battlefields of Flanders during 1916. Here, Buckam Singh was wounded twice in battle and later received treatment at a hospital run by one of Canada's most famous soldier poets the Doctor Lt. Colonel John McCrae. While recovering from his wounds in England, Private Buckam Singh contracted tuberculosis and spent his final days in a Kitchener, Ontario military hospital, dying at age 25 in 1919. His grave in Kitchener is the only known First World War Sikh Canadian soldier's grave in Canada. Despite being forgotten for ninety years and never getting to see his family again, Buckam Singh is now being celebrated as not only a Sikh hero, but a Canadian hero.
Legacy of Buckam Singh (1972) The Events Leading Up To an Independent Punjab State Precursor to Operation Bluestar - Post Independence Period of India (1956) Punjabi Suba Speeches (1956) The Punjabi Suba Movement After Independence from British Rule (1956) The Punjabi Suba movement was a long-drawn political agitation, launched by Punjabi speaking people (mostly Sikhs) demanding the creation of autonomous Punjabi Suba, or Punjabi-speaking state, in the post-independence Indian state of East Punjab. The movement is defined as the forerunner of Khalistan movement. Borrowing from the pre-partition demands for a Sikh country, this movement demanded a fundamental constitutional autonomous state within India. Led by the Akali Dal (a centre-right Sikh-centric state political party in Punjab, India. The party is the second-oldest in India, after Congress, being founded in 1920.), it resulted in the formation of the state of Punjab. The state of Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh were also created and some Pahari-majority parts of the East Punjab were also merged with Himachal Pradesh following the movement. The result of the movement failed to satisfy its leaders due to regions in Northern Haryana with Punjabi speaking and Sikh populations like Jind, Karnal, Ambala, Fatehabad and Sirsa being left out of Punjab. Many Sikh leaders saw this as falling short of the promise of a fully autonomous Sikh State that they felt was promised to them by Nehru and Gandhi in exchange for joining the Indian Union. In the 1950s the Punjabi Suba movement for linguistic reorganization of the state of Punjab and status for the Punjabi language took place, which the government finally agreed to in 1966 after protests and recommendation of the States Reorganization commission. The state of East Punjab was later split into the states of Himachal Pradesh, the new state Haryana and current day Punjab. The process of Sikh alienation from the national mainstream was set in motion shortly after Independence due to the communalism of national and regional parties and organization including the RSS, Jan Sangh, and the Arya Samaj, exacerbated by Congress mishandling and local politicians and factions. According to Indian general Afsir Karim, many observers believed that separatist sentiments began in 1951 when Punjabi Hindus disowned the Punjabi language under the influence of radical elements, and "doubts on the concepts of a Punjabi Suba" created mutual suspicion, bitterness, and further misunderstanding between the two communities. The 1966 reorganization left the Sikhs highly dissatisfied, with the unresolved status of Chandigarh and the distribution of river waters intensifying bitter feelings. While the Green Revolution in Punjab had several positive impacts, the introduction of the mechanized agricultural techniques led to uneven distribution of wealth. The industrial development was not done at the same pace of agricultural development, the Indian government had been reluctant to set up heavy industries in Punjab due to its status as a high-risk border state with Pakistan. The rapid increase in the higher education opportunities without adequate rise in the jobs resulted in the increase in the unemployment of educated youth. The resulting unemployed rural Sikh youth were drawn to the militant groups, and formed the backbone of the militancy. After being routed in 1972 Punjab election, the Akali Dal put forward the Anandpur Sahib Resolution in 1973 to address these and other grievances, and demand more autonomy to Punjab. The resolution included both religious and political issues. It asked for recognizing Sikhism as a religion It also demanded that power be generally devaluated from the Central to state governments. The Anandpur Resolution was rejected by the government as a secessionist document. Thousands of people joined the movement, feeling that it represented a real solution to demands such as a larger share of water for irrigation and the return of Chandigarh to Punjab. The 1978 Sikh-Nirankari clashes had been within the Sikh community, but the pro-Sant Nirankari stance of some Hindus in Punjab and Delhi had led to further division, including Jan Sangh members like Harbans Lal Khanna joining the fray, who, in a protest against holy city status for Amritsar, raising inflammatory slogans like "Kachha, kara, kirpan, bhejo inko Pakistan" ("those who wear the 5Ks (Sikhs), send them to Pakistan"), led to aggressive counter demonstrations. Prime Minister of Canada, Pierre Elliot Trudeau Visits India; Prime Minister of India, Indira Ghandi Visits Canada - The India-Canada Bonds Stay in Tact (1971) Indira Gandhi of India and Pierre Trudeau of Canada-walk through the lobby of the new $3 million Shaw festival Theatre at Niagar-on-the-Lake last night during intermission. After the play; Mrs. Gandhi joined Trudeau and his wife; Margaret; on state for presentation of a plaque. Prime minister Pierre Trudeau touched down in India. For five days in January, 1971, Pierre Elliott Trudeau toured the country, rode a camel, petted a bullock, went up the Ganges and into a locomotive factory, visited the tombs of Indian notables, saw the Taj Mahal and wore a hat that would have made a Rajput proud. He then sat down with the emerging, redoubtable Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to discuss the state of the world and the sorry state of Canada’s economic relationship with India. Even nuclear weapons were discussed in 1971 with the Canadian prime minister in a press conference opining “there is no expressed desire on (the Indian) part to explode such a (nuclear) device nor I believe the technological ability to do so.” Three years later, in May 1974, the Indians did explode such a device – cheekily codenamed Smiling Buddha – in the Rajasthan desert, using plutonium from the research reactor Canada had built for it in 1956 for peaceful purposes. The bilateral relationship dropped into a diplomatic pit with every leader since expressing sorrowful but hopeful words that things would improve. The one issue not on Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s agenda was anything to do with the Punjab and Sikhs. At the time, both were good news stories. The Punjab, home to most Sikhs, was the centre of an agricultural Green Revolution with new strains of wheat moving India from a food-deficient country to one of self sufficiency, with exports contemplated. Economically, Sikhs were the main beneficiaries and their biggest political problem was whether or not their beards met the requirements of flying fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. The emergence of India as a legitimate and serious geopolitical counterweight to China, not only in Asia but globally, has dramatically changed the bilateral agenda. Over the years, very little energy was expended by either India or Canada to put the relationship on a footing reflective of this changed status. There have been large and small bumps on that road since. Sikhs have been a significant part of the Canadian mosaic since the late 19th century. Their numbers increased dramatically with the mid-1970s changes to the Immigration Act and today they represent close to half of the 1.2 million Canadians with ancestry from the subcontinent. Their wealth, energy and self-deprecating humour, along with a monotheistic theology, were dominant features and over time the use of Sardar and Sardarji became terms of appreciation for the community as a whole. Towards the end of European colonial dominance, they were a military mainstay of the British Raj. As one Indian researcher wrote, “the success-story of the Sikh community as a whole has taken the form of a deep-rooted anxiety in the collective minds of the non-Sikh majorities especially the Hindus of India.” The present prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, has achieved political success exploiting this and other anxieties alongside the promotion of Hindu ascendency. IMPORTANT EXCERPT BY CSE AFTER AIR INDIA BOMBING (1985):India’s government knows more of what goes on in the Canadian Sikh community than the combined forces of the RCMP, CSIS and CSE. This was evident in the aftermath of the 1985 Air India bombings and it was rare if a visit by the Indian High Commissioner (he a Sikh) to the Department of Foreign Affairs did not provide details on some nefarious action within the community. The Path to Operation Bluestar: How the Assassination of Indira Ghandi led to the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots (Black November) Deceased Sikhs - Result of the Clashes The Sikh-Nirankari clashes - Precursor to Operation Bluestar (1978) The 1978 Sikh-Nirankari clash occurred between the Sant Nirankari Mission (An Indian backed Sikh Organization) and Sikhs of Damdami Taksal and Akal Kirtani Jatha on 13 April 1978 at Amritsar, Punjab, India. Sixteen people—thirteen traditional Sikhs and three Nirankari followers—were killed in the ensuing violence, occurring when some Akhand Kirtani Jatha and Damdami Taksal members led by Fauja Singh protested against and tried to stop a convention of Sant Nirankari Mission followers. This incident is considered to be a starting point in the events leading to Operation Blue Star and the 1980s insurgency in Punjab. Operation Bluestar - Indhira Ghandi's Plot to Eliminate Akhan Kirtani Jatha & Damdami Taksal Leaders (1984) Visual Depiction of Operation Bluestar (Preliminary Footage - AP News) Operation Blue Star was an Indian military operation carried out between 1 and 8 June 1984, ordered by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to remove religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers from the buildings of the Harmandir Sahib complex in Amritsar, Punjab. In July 1983, the Sikh political party Akali Dal's President Harcharan Singh Longowal had invited Bhindranwale to take up residence in Golden Temple Complex. Bhindranwale later on made the sacred temple complex an armoury and headquarters. In the violent events leading up to the Operation Blue Star, the militants had killed 165 Nirankaris, Hindus and Nirankaris, even 39 Sikhs opposed to Bhindranwale were killed. The total number of deaths was 410 in violent incidents and riots while 1,180 people were injured. Counterintelligence reports of the Indian agencies had reported that three prominent figures in the operation, Shabeg Singh, Balbir Singh and Amrik Singh had made at least six trips each to Pakistan between the years 1981 and 1983. Intelligence Bureau reported that weapons training was being provided at gurdwaras in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Soviet intelligence agency KGB reportedly tipped off the Indian agency RAW about the CIA and ISI working together on a Plan for Punjab with a code name "Gibraltar". RAW from its interrogation of a Pakistani Army officer received information that over a thousand trained Special Service Group commandos of the Pakistan Army had been dispatched by Pakistan into the Indian Punjab to assist Bhindranwale in his fight against the government. A large number of Pakistani agents also took the smuggling routes in the Kashmir and Kutch n for three days ending on 8 June. A clean-up operation codenamed as Operation Woodrose was also initiated throughout Punjab. The army had underestimated the firepower possessed by the militants. Militants had Chinese made rocket-propelled grenade launchers with armor piercing capabilities. Tanks and heavy artillery were used to attack the militants using anti-tank and machine-gun fire from the heavily fortified Akal Takht. After a 24-hour firefight, the army finally wrested control of the temple complex. Casualty figures for the Army were 83 dead and 249 injured. According to the official estimate presented by the Indian government, 1592 were apprehended and there were 493 combined militant and civilian casualties. High civilian casualties were attributed by the state to militants using pilgrims trapped inside the temple as human shields. According to Indian army generals, it was "doubtful" that Bhindranwale had any assurance of help or promise of asylum from Pakistan, as he made no attempt to escape with any associates, in additions to traditions of martyrdom. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale (Damdami Taksal Leader - Killed) Assassination of Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi By Her Sikh Bodyguards (1984) Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated at 9:30 a.m. on 31 October 1984 at her residence in Safdarjung Road, New Delhi. She was killed by her bodyguards. Satwant Singh and Beant Singh in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star, an Indian military action carried out between 1 and 8 June 1984 ordered by Indira Gandhi to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from the Golden Temple of Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab. The collateral damage included the death of many pilgrims, as well as damage to the Akal Takht. The military action on the sacred temple was criticized both inside and outside India. https://preview.redd.it/x3ee2xdzrq3b1.jpg?width=440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=438619a4afceb2005ca06799dc057de538203653 The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots (Sikh Genocide/Black November) in Response to Indian Prime Minister Indira Ghandi's Assasination - 17,000 Sikhs Dead [This Event Gave Rise to the Punjabi Insurgency Movement, Babar Khalsa & Flight Air India 182 Bombing in Canada] The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots - Resulted in 17,000 Deceased Sikhs The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, also known as the 1984 Sikh Genocide, 1984 Sikh Massacre or Black November, was a series of organized pogroms against Sikhs in India following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Government estimates project that about 2,800 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and 3,350 nationwide, whilst independent sources estimate the number of deaths at about 8,000–17,000. The assassination of Indira Gandhi itself had taken place shortly after she had ordered Operation Blue Star, a military action to secure the Harmandir Sahib Sikh temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab, in June 1984. The operation had resulted in a deadly battle with armed Sikh groups who were demanding greater rights and autonomy for Punjab and the deaths of many pilgrims. Sikhs worldwide had criticized the army action and many saw it as an assault on their religion and identity. In the aftermath of the pogroms, the government reported that 20,000 had fled the city; the People's Union for Civil Liberties reported "at least" 1,000 displaced persons. The most-affected regions were the Sikh neighborhoods of Delhi. Human rights organizations and newspapers across India believed that the massacre was organized. The collusion of political officials connected to the Indian National Congress in the violence and judicial failure to penalize the perpetrators alienated Sikhs and increased support for the Khalistan movement. The Akal Takht, Sikhism's governing body, considers the killings a genocide. In 2011, Human Rights Watch reported that the Government of India had "yet to prosecute those responsible for the mass killings".According to the 2011 WikiLeaks cable leaks, the United States was convinced of Indian National Congress' complicity in the riots and called it "opportunism" and "hatred" by the Congress government, of Sikhs. Although the U.S. has not identified the riots as genocide, it acknowledged that "grave human rights violations" occurred. In 2011, the burned sites of multiple Sikh killings from 1984, were discovered in Hondh-Chillar and Pataudi areas of Haryana. The Central Bureau of Investigation, the main Indian investigative agency, believes that the violence was organized with support from the Delhi police and some central-government officials. After 34 years of delay, in December 2018, the first high-profile conviction for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots took place with the arrest of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court. Very few convictions have taken place in the pending 1984 cases, with only one death penalty conviction for an accused, Yashpal in the case of murdering Sikhs in the Mahipalpur area of Delhi. 2023.06.03 07:29 Basic_Commercial_806 How Darvin Ham cost Lakers a trip to the Finals
Darvin Ham's coaching showed improvement as Lakers went further along in the playoffs. Each round he made adjustments to opponents and found success. Against the Grizzlies he shortened the rotation to cut Beasley and Brown out and matched AD's minutes with JJJ. The Warriors he put Schroder in the starting lineup and cut Vando out to match their small ball. The Nuggets series is where he went completely wrong.
Anyone can tell Nuggets are the biggest team in the nba. They have 3 guys 6'8 6'10 6'11 in their starting lineup. Jokic is an expert at exploiting mismatches not only for himself, but for his teammates too. If there was any series that called for bigger players in the Lakers rotation, it's this one.
In Game 1, Ham started the same 3 guard lineup from the Warriors series, which most knew was a bad idea. Nuggets predictably got off to scorching start with Gordon, MPJ bullying their smaller matchups and Jokic destroying Lakers on the boards. By halftime Nuggets were up 20 and Jokic outrebounded the entire Lakers team 16:15! Ham goes back to that same lineup in the 3rd and Nuggets maintain their 20+ pt lead to the end of the quarter. Definition of insanity
Lakers made a comeback in the 4th and brought the deficit to 3, but they lost the game by one possession. The lineup Lakers had during the run was SchrodeReaves/Rui/Lebron/AD. Nuggets offense went cold in part due to an interesting defensive adjustment. Rui guarded Jokic, while AD helped off Gordon. Rui held his own during this stretch, bodying Jokic and AD causing turnovers. This adjustment gets memed a lot, but I think the takeaway was playing bigger led to Lakers closing the gap. And AD in help position is still a problem for opponents.
Game 1 was the perfect opportunity for Lakers to steal one. Ham gave the Lakers no chance from the beginning with the 3 guard starting lineup. It became clear to Lakers fans that Rui should be starting, not for his defense on Jokic but to match Denver's size. AD, Reaves and Rui shined. Dlo shot 36%, a team low -25 and was being targeted on defense by the Nuggets. A good coach pays attention to those things and changes lineups/adjusts minutes accordingly.
Ham returned to the Dlo/Reaves/Vando/Lebron/AD starting lineup in Game 2. It was still an improvement over game 1. Lakers got off to a good start in 1st quarter and were able to take an early 10+ pt lead in the 2nd. Rui continued to be a matchup problem for the Nuggets, as he went 17 points on perfect 7/7 from the field in first half. Again, a good coach would recognize this and reward him with starting the second half. Riding the hot hand was one of Ham's biggest problems all season. Lakers still had a lead throughout the 3rd, mostly due to Vando's defense on Jamal Murray. He only had 14 points by the end of the 3rd.
The 4th quarter of Game 2 was where Ham made his second biggest mistake of the series. He took Vando out at the start and Murray proceeded to destroy the Lakers for 23 points in the quarter. What was telling was how easy it looked. Murray was simply shooting right over Schroder contests and backing him down for high percentage shots at the basket. Despite that explosion Lakers still lost by a couple of possessions. Draymond Green also commented on this in his podcast after Game 2, Schroder cannot guard Murray. There's a 3 inch height and 45 pound weight difference between them lol. Other than Vando, Troy Brown should've been next in line to guard Murray. Ham wasn't willing to try the 6'6 SG/SF ideal for this type of matchup which was baffling. Dlo shot 38% and was again a team low -16.
Lakers fans were expecting big changes in Game 3, considering how big they collapsed in Game 2. Surely Dlo would be benched and Rui brought to the starting lineup. Ham started the same lineup from Game 2. Ya, insanity. Murray found rhythm in the 1st quarter, scoring on Dlo late contests and overall bad perimeter defense. Lakers entered an early 10+ pt deficit by the end of the 1st . Murray also continued to exploit the mismatch on Schroder to stay in rhythm, ending the game with 37 pts on 50% shooting. Ham conceded the series in game 3, when he refused to go away from Dlo. 0-3 deficits are impossible to comeback from.
While Lakers big man depth was thin, it was necessary to try them especially against a big like Jokic. If Spoelstra is giving Cody Zeller burn in game 1 of the nba Finals, Ham can try Thompson and Wenyan. People were giving AD flack for not being aggressive enough on offense. He was in Game 1, but after he was running on fumes due to all physicality invovled with guarding an elite big like Jokic. Nuggets also made it a point to involve AD in many actions as well. In 2020 Lakers had Dwight Howard to take on the hits from Jokic, so that AD didn't have to. It gave AD relief and allowed to him to be impactful on offense and defense. I think Ham should've tapped into both Thompson and Wenyan to preserve Lebron and AD and use all 6 fouls if he had to.
TLDR: Darvin Ham made every mistake a coach could against the Nuggets. In a series where every game was decided by a few points, those mistakes directly led to losses.
1- He started a 3 guard lineup when Denver had 3 guys above 6'8 in their frontcourt, giving away Game 1. Doubling down on that lineup after the half was insanity. Lakers still brought it within 3 points near the end. Can't be overstated how big it would've been for Lakers to take Game 1.
2- 6'1 Schroder assigned to guard 6'4 Murray, leading to Murray averaging 33 points on 50% shooting in the series. That defensive matchup directly resulted in Game 2 and Game 3 losses. Vando and Troy Brown are the only player who can guard Murray. Schroder wasn't needed much in this series. The starting lineup should've been Reaves/Troy/Rui/Lebron/AD.
3- The biggest liability on the Lakers (offensively and defensively) Dangelo Russell was given 25+ minutes for 3 games straight. He was -53 on and +25 off across those 3 games. Any rational coach would've DNP'd him by Game 3. Ham allowed him to play 20 min in Game 3 and he was very costly in every single minute. Murray also got off to a hot start targeting him for easy buckets.
4- He refused to play his best players together. Reaves/Rui/Lebron/AD were Lakers 4 best players all series and Ham waited until game 4 to start them together.
5- Not playing Tristan Thompson and Wenyan Gabriel more from the beginning of the series. They aren't the ideal centers for playoff ball. However they were both needed to give AD and to lesser extent Lebron a breather. AD's offense took a huge dip after Game 1 and that's not a coincidence. The physicality of Jokic (post-ups and battling for boards) left AD burned out by Game 4. Tristan Thompson was surprisingly effective in the minutes he played, but again Ham waited until Lakers were down 0-3 to play him.

2023.06.03 07:27 Upper_Rate2477 What am I supposed to do?
Baby girl was moving and active majority of the pregnancy. Then at 33 weeks, I get diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I am 36 weeks now. No, not at 28 weeks (I know, late to the party). Anyways, I am living in a motel as I look to buy a home. It's been 2 solid months. My diet hasn't changed much since being diagnosed. Breakfast is a thin layer of peanut butter on 1 slice of whole wheat bread. Lunch and dinner is always the same thing: 17 pretzels, 17 small cubes of cheese (smaller than pre-bagged cubed cheese), 3 tablespoons of sliced almonds and 2 tablespoons of dried cranberries. I literally don't even have a microwave to cook food, so this is the best option based on what I can afford.
My blood sugar levels have been great with the occasional spike. Today, 1 hour after eating, my blood sugar was 192! Wtf caused it to spike when my diet is literally the most boring bs diet?
I was told to test 1hr after eating, which I do, and it's normally sitting at 120. I'm freaking out because baby is acting lethargic and not moving much today. I did a baby kick tracker from my obgyn and she barely kicked enough each time I did it today.
No I don't have snacks. I'm broke thanks to living in a motel for the last 2 months. I can barely afford food for myself since I'm also feeding my spouse and older child (preteen). Should I test 2hrs after to play it safe and make sure it's dropping?

2023.06.03 07:15 ExtraWoodpecker8602 Half vent/half proud of what I’ve done
So, obvious throwaway account - cause I’m fairly certain my wife may stalk some of the reddits I subscribe to on my main account.
Some history to begin - M39 - I got read the riot act from the doctor late last year. Scales tipped in at 199kg - 438 pounds… I’m not wanting to ever condone the way we lived and behaved during the time before vaccinations, but covid isolation policies in Australia, newborn just before covid blew up and all the challenges of sleep deprivation combined with WFH in a very stressful job and the convenience of Uber eats made my weight skyrocket.
Anyway, doctor tore strips off me, I buried it, as I always do with these things. I’m male, it’s what we do.
I would take my child to activities on the weekends, important life skills that I feel are vital for children to learn given how dangerous things are now. Anyway, it was also a gym. So, I signed up and started. For context I did all this stuff 12 years or so ago, got down to a weight where I did obstacle racing with friends - running 20k a day and loving life. Met my wife when I was at my peak and my nights rapidly changed from worshipping at the iron church to worshipping the idiot box or playing computer games. Pissed at myself for that.
Anyway, I started at the gym, I got checked out, all those things in March, I’d lost 6kg - so down to 193kg - the joys of catching covid - apart from the side effects of it, its a great way to cut weight /sarcasm - but still a long way to go considering how far I need to go.
My trainer, was supportive. He said for the first week all he wanted me to do is show up, spend 5 minutes on the treadmill and go home. By the end of that week, I was doing 20-30 minutes - the briefest flicker of what I missed had come back to me. The second week, we got into food prep, and weights - foundational stuff to get me back into the groove - nothing heavy, nothing complex, just tighten the up the ligaments and make sure everything would handle what would come over the next couple of months. I threw myself into it each night, after the family were sorted out for the evening, I’d spend an hour to start off with in my church.
I then had to travel for work - it’s not uncommon, but put a distinct damper on what I wanted to do. I bought a blender, packed it in my stuff and went away for work for a couple of weeks. I ended up signing up to a gym where I was - I spent my days at work, my evenings with my team members and the late evenings/very early in the morning (till 12.30-1am) in the gym each night. My food prep stuff was changed to allow me to do it relatively low effort - a couple of smoothies, packed with fruit/vegetables and one with protein powder and coffee. I’d go back to my apartment at lunch, make the next one and come back to work - so there was more incidental walking than I expected, anyway, caught gym flu. Who’d have thought, my calorie intake was so low, plus my expenditure was higher than my body would take, I had managed to grind myself into the ground. I eased off slightly, ate more food - not necessarily better food, but I ate, needed to build up again. By the time I got back I had lost 2kg, I wasn’t happy, but anyway, loss is a loss.
Over the course of the next month or so, I lost another few kgs, like 4 or so, but i was living at home again. When I train, I can be a moody, emotional shit, I know this. I’m like a bear with a sore paw.
This is where the rant comes in - My wife, and her family - aren’t exactly the most supportive in this - some never had to exercise in their life, lucky people. I constantly had to hear about it, defend my position - no, I don’t want a beer, I don’t want lasagne and I should live a little.
My wife on the other hand, has struggled all her life, and apparently it’s easier to just use the credit card and buy McDonald’s, kfc, multiple times a week at dinner and for lunch at work - then leaves the bags, boxes, etc in clear sight - kitchen bench, coffee table in front of the couch, in the car. She’s had weight loss surgery and it helped, but apparently, it’s easier to tap a few buttons on the phone instead of defrost something she’s made and chucked in the freezer. One of the things I do, at least 3-4 times a week is go around the house and tidy up after her, throwing out empty packets chips, fast food bags. I can feel the support there eh? Nothing like having my willpower tested every few days.
I had it out with her a few weeks ago, told her I couldn’t afford this and apparently cause I don’t eat with them anymore and my food is so expensive, it’s my fault. To be clear, it’s not cheap, it’s certainly less expensive than Uber eats multiple times a weeks.
We didn’t talk for a few days and I went away for work again, so I could cool off. I got to do my meal prep in the apartment again and didn’t have to see any takeaway boxes for a few days. Just to be clear - I do not ask her to make my food, and I often make my child’s meals, but the limit of how I’m helped is her ordering shopping online or may be take something out of the oven.
Whilst this was all happening, I was frustrated as anything. Scales weren’t moving, for like 2 weeks, despite how much I was putting in. I got sick as well whilst I was away - so I was like the bear with a sore paw. But, I persisted, and as of this morning, in a single month of persistence, I managed to drop 7.7kg (a sliver under 17 pounds). A proverbial shit tonne of cardio, and workouts anywhere between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours a night that helps me live in my life that I . And I had to buy all new clothes - I probably should have bought the size lower than I got cause these ones are baggy too - oh well, first world problem right there🤣
Anyway, my journey so far 199kg to 174.9kg (438 to 385) dropping 24.1kg (53 pounds) through highly regimented cico, being stubborn and working out now I I have that thirst for trying to get back to my best life.
It’s the start of another month for me - I count my progress on the 3rd of the month, wish me luck 😃😃

2023.06.03 07:09 boopinmybop Pizza pizza
| This is my Denver mile high Trader Joe’s pizza. It’s Trader Joe’s dough that i cold fermented in my fridge for 1-2 days, after shaping into 9-10” pizza sized dough balls. 1 pack of TJ’s makes 4 of these size pizzas. Day of, broil oven for 30min+ w cast iron pan inside or 500 for at least an 45min. Take out dough ball, flour it on both sides, and use ur hands to lightly press into a circle, without pressing too much air out. Then I grab a small roller and get it to about a 5-6” diameter circle, evenly thin. When I roll, I flip and turn 90 degrees after each roll to get a really even thinness to the dough. Once I hit that size I use my hands and gravity to establish a crust, then back on the table and use my hands to stretch it out to about 9-10 inches. Now I remove the pan and drop a tad extra olive oil, but turn on vent fan cuz of the smoke point of EVOO. Then carefully place the dough into the pan. We want to par bake the dough for 1 min. Remove and then use a spoon to pat down any bubbles. Get a teaspoon or 2 of EVOO and sprinkle it across ur dough. Then sprinkle on some oregano, crushed red pepper, and garlic powder. Then I use 2 slices mozzarella cheese preferably whole milk. Then I top with whatever I want, I keep my toppings frozen and they cook out perfectly. Then into the pan, and back into the oven for 6 minutes. Take it out, and voilà, pizza pizza submitted by boopinmybop to castiron [link] [comments] |
2023.06.03 07:06 Wolfwind1 Looking for feedback on a wacky caster vital strike build.
So the premise of this is a melee reach sorcerer who is built around doing crazy vital strike hits for Wrath of the Righteous.
My current build idea is you start off with rowdy rogue, heavily focused in stcharisma, with a minor drop in int and wisdom to push your stats up high, probably angel kin assassimar for the race, with skill points into arcana and persuasion. Then you push 4 levels of sorc (probably base line, but a case could be made for cross blooded just to make all my elemental damage the same flavor.) with probably a fire dragon bloodline, though likely lightning or cold ones would work fine as well. Then as soon as you finish those sorc levels you move straight into dragon disciple, for 4 levels followed by a single level dip into lore master for greater vital strike at level 10. After that it is EK all the way to 20. (lvl 1 rowdy rogue, 4 sorc, 4 dragon, 1 loremaster, 10 ek by 20)
Feats would probably be something along these lines.lvl 1: Spell focus elemental flavor. (Since you are too low on bab to get a weapon focus out the gate.) lvl 2: (bloodline feat) Either spell pen (cause every goddamn thing in this game has spell resist it feels like) or greater elemental flavor focus. lvl 3: weapon focus on a two handed reach weapon. (Since this build is for crazy damage, your ac won't be great but with early magic mainly focused on keeping you alive it shouldn't need to be) lvl 5: Spell pen if it hasn't been grabbed or greater spell pen. lvl 7: either selective or bolster meta magic. lvl 9: outflank for basic feat and skill focus arcana through the sorc/dragon bloodline stuff. lvl 10: yoink a feat through lore master for greater vital strike. lvl 11: power attack for base, with cornugan smash for EK free feat. lvl 13: improved critical for weapon type. lvl 15: greater weapon spec for type, and ek feat on dazzling display. lvl 17: shatter defenses. lvl 19: dreadful carnage and ek feat for persuasion to really nail home those cornugan smashes.
Mythics (I haven't decided on a path for it yet but leaning towards angel.). lvl 1 abundant casting (you won't have level 3 spells open just yet, but they should be right around the corner). lvl 2 mythic vital strike. lvl 3 ascendent element flavor. lvl 4 mythic spell pen. lvl 5 improved abundant castinglvl 6 mythic weapon focus. lvl 7 greater abundant casting or archmage armor. lvl 8 the one that didn't get grabbed at 7. lvl 9-10 undecided but going to be focused on more nuking or more boping.
Expected playstyle is going to focus on using magic to stay alive in the early game(reach weapon to stay behind the tank, spells to stay alive through the bs.) while bopping people from the back line. Then around lvl 9 or so when third level spells come online you use fireball or dragon breath for aoe clearing, and vital strike for single target boppery. spells from 4-6 going to be mainly focused on damage since by this level the primary casters should have equivalent or better buffs for anything my character can do, baring strictly personal ones like greater false life and eventually transform (and presumably legendary proportions from your buffing caster). By this point you should be running around with crazy stats, at least 10 str higher than whatever your unbuffed base is, tons of extra ac, reach for days, in addition to constantly demoralizing whenever you hit/kill something, which you should be doing a ton of damage with insanely empowered vital strike. By level 20 you are a 15 bab caster who will have lvl 8 possibly lvl 9 spells depending on how merged spell books would work with this monstrosity from angel path. At the cost of just 3 levels of spell casting.
Anyhow thoughts or comments or just shit I missed in general greatly appreciated.
