2023.05.29 14:00 AutoModerator General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of May 29, 2023
Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here. Is an EV right for me?
Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:
Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?
Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:
[1] Your general location
[2] Your budget in $, €, or £
[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer
[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?
[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase
[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage
[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?
[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?
[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?
If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time. Need tax credit/incentives help?

I’m 18+ and all characters and participants must be 18+
Lights, camera, action!
The live audience cheered and clapped, whilst garish lights flashed all over the large stage. A blonde busty women, dressed in a suit - the presenter. Her face looked uncomfortably plastic, to the point where it was a surprise that she wasn't melting underneath the stage lights.
"Hello, and welcome to The Gameshow!" she called into the crowd excitedly. "I hope you're all as excited as I am to get started, because as you know, you either ride it..."
"Or you lose it!" The audience called back the cheesy line, having heard it hundreds of times before.
"And for all you viewers at home..." she turned towards a nearby camera. "You could get the chance to come on to The Gameshow. All you have to do is send a text with your age and name to 696969, and we'll be in contact!" A set of disclaimers flashed across the screen for all viewers.
"Now, enough of that. I think it's time to play, right?" The audience cheered in approval. "Let's meet our first contestant!" The stage lights dimmed, a spotlight shining down on to an opening panel in the floor of the stage. A platform slowly started rising underneath the stage, bringing up the first player.

2023.05.29 13:55 yeehaw__cowboy How do some people live relatively normal lives without any trouble from law enforcement and suddenly they get arrested for murdering someone over a stupid reason?
For example, some people have killed someone over a stupid argument but they have no mental illnesses/trauma/past criminal records. Everyone runs into verbal fights and disagreements at times, so why they haven't used lethal violence before? I don't understand.

2023.05.29 13:55 Technical_Yoghurt333 AITA for not having a talking to the mother of my child’s possible sibling?
There’s no way to simplify this but I’ll try, I (f/25) refuse to have a relationship of any kind with my daughter’s (f/1yr) fathers’s new wife/gf/baby momma. It’s very confusing, I don’t know what she is. So for context, my daughter’s father has been absent in her life since I was 3 months pregnant. We had a relationship and were even engaged at one point but his alcoholism, temper, attitude, demeanor, his..everything became an issue. We lived together briefly at the beginning of my pregnancy but once he started drinking it all went downhill. One night, we got into an argument while he was drunk and it got heated so I just said I would leave for the night since I didn’t feel safe and i would come back when he was sober, he cornered me against a couch while very drunk and wouldn’t let me leave the house until I threatened to call the cops several times. After I was in my car, he kept pulling on my door and yelling at me to stop and just kept making it difficult for me to leave. I finally left that night and I stayed with my mom, we later talked and we came to an agreement where he would stop drinking until after the baby was born, I had hopes he would leave alcohol all together by then. The very next weekend, he was drunk again but he left the house this time and didn’t come back. I called him the next morning to see where he was and he claimed to be at the beach with his buddy’s gf, “picking rocks”. No buddy, just him and the buddy’s gf…I’m sorry but that didn’t sit well with me, I asked him when he would be back and he said he didn’t have a set time to be back home. He was supposed to work that day but chose to call off as well. I talked to my mom and she told me this would only get worse and that he wouldn’t change so I decided to leave him. I moved out that same day, I called to let him know and he started off by saying, I was already going to suggest you stay at your mom’s for a couple weeks but this works too. That was my final sign. I left and took all of the things I paid for which was most of everything we had minus his things and the few things his mother had bought. We kept in contact for the sake of the baby and I was determined to make things work for that reason. We were together technically but trying to work on things apart. I wanted to see some real change before the baby arrived to actually go back with him. He never changed and things got worse. He stopped calling, I had to initiate contact and it would still take him hours to respond. I would call him when i had drs appts and he would ignore them, i would text and he sometimes would respond, other times I had to wait for hours to get a simple response.I had low blood pressure which would cause me to get super dizzy sometimes when I stood up too quick or moved too fast and I passed out one time while at work. I worked at my aunt’s restaurant and my uncle was working when it happened. He saw me acting strangely while prepping and he knew something was wrong after I stopped responding to him so he rushed over to me when he saw me going down and managed to catch me before I fell completely. I fell but I didn’t fall as hard as I could have, had he not caught me. When I came to, he made sure I was okay and asked if I wanted to stay or go home and made me eat just in case it helped before letting me go back to work. I texted my ex about it all right after it happened and it took him 6 hours to respond, and he had the audacity to blame me and say that if I was a better mother I would have my dr do something about it before I killed our baby. My dr had addressed it prior to me passing out and recommended i drink more fluids and add more salt to my diet but that it was going to be normal because of my blood pressure and that there wasn’t much else i could do. She said to sit down or get low to the ground when i felt like i was getting dizzy. She even sent me to a cardiologist and she said the same things. A few weeks later I found out he had been cheating the whole time we were together and was sleeping with other girls. All of that just confirmed that we weren’t ever going to work. As the time came for the baby to arrive, he started pushing the topic of him being in the room while I was in labor and pushing. Since we were no longer together, I was strongly opposed, I said he could be at the hospital but not in the L&D room. He kept pushing and even tried to scare me into it. He claimed his “multiple” lawyers would order a DNA test to be performed on the baby while in utero to prove he was the dad so a judge could force me to let him be in the room. I simply wouldn’t allow it. It poses unnecessary risks to the baby and to myself. No way. He kept pushing but I called his bluff and so he stopped with that tactic and started bashing me on fb about how evil and monstrous and selfish I was, and how “Jesus and monk like” he was trying to be about the whole situation and that he would fight tooth and nail for his daughter and not falter and I was “keeping him from his daughter” who wasn’t born yet. (All quoted from his essay about me) I couldn’t believe him, I stopped acknowledging him as it was just becoming too stressful for me. On top of dealing with him, both of my grandparents that helped raise me in place of my absentee father passed 5 months apart from each other. It all started to take a toll on my health and i lost my sight in my left eye from lack of blood flow. It was some sort of panic attack combined with my low blood pressure and so I had to go to the hospital and stay there a night while they did tests to see what happened, the conclusion was functional vision loss and they weren’t sure when it would go away. He didn’t know about that. I was struggling a lot and he just didn’t care before so why alert him of that. I tried to block him out the last month of my pregnancy (not that there was much to ignore, after he bashed me on socials, he went radio silent) and eventually had our daughter and was really focused on my recovery as well as being a new mom to my baby girl. He showed up to my moms house with his father unannounced 2 weeks after I gave birth and she stopped him at the door. She went out to talk to him and his dad so that I wouldn’t get upset or anxious, She was worried about my health so I stayed inside with the baby. She spoke with them and told them simply that he should reach out to me via text and to try to work things out for the baby. Not to just show up unannounced. He then tried to bash me and say that he was and that I was ignoring him, which was a lie, I told her ever single time we were in contact and so she knew he was lying. She told him to try harder in regards to being a better person and called him out on some things he did. He stopped arguing at that point to save face for his dad. She came back in and he never reached out after that. I later moved out to my aunts on my dads side because some things happened with my mom that made it impossible to live together. My aunt convinced me to reach out to my ex and to try to make things work for the baby. So I did. I tried to talk to him about mediation and lawyers and child support, he claimed to be on board and when I offered for him to meet her, he told me he had “errands to run”. Later I found out the errands were to go grocery shopping for food to make dinner for his new gf. I stopped trying after that. I asked him to sign away his rights and he denied. He claimed he would never and that he would see me in court. I eventually started dating again and found my now husband. He and i started dating and it all just clicked into place. I fell in love with him and Hes just so good with my daughter and treats me so well. He treats my daughter as if she was his own. He’s known her since she was 3 months old so she quickly grew attached to him and We ended up getting engaged a few months after and i moved in with him before he went away on deployment. (Yes it seems sudden but this is all the complete opposite of my ex and he actually makes the effort to be involved in my daughters life, i know I found the one) Around Christmas I decided to push my ex again for him to sign away his rights. I wasn’t going to force him to be around her and at this point, after months of no contact or even an ounce of effort on his part, I didn’t think I was wrong in asking. I asked him to sign away his rights repeatedly. I wasn’t even asking for child support, I just wanted to be free of him coming back in her life later when it could become more convenient for him. My daughter deserves better than that. He denied and said that he would never…yet again…. He said he would take me to court and take her away from me. I called his bluff every single time. This kept up for months and still to this day. She is now 1 and 4 months. He now has a new wife/gf/baby momma. She reached out to me in January of 2023, 5 days after new years saying that I don’t know who she was but that she was dating my ex and that she hated to reach out like this, but she was worried about my safety and the baby’s safety. She said that he choked her and spit on her while he was intoxicated and that the police were called and that she made the mistake of not pressing charges, but that she just hoped we were safe and wanted to give me a heads up. I told her to call me and she did, she sounded sincere over the phone and I told her that that was the reason for my leaving. She said it all made sense after I explained everything. I offered for her to speak to my lawyer and eventually a judge so that it was no longer my word against his but hers as well and she seemed to agree wholeheartedly. She said he was an alcoholic and that he wasn’t fit to be a parent. I took her word and we agreed to stay in touch. The next day she texted me to tell me that she was pressing charges after all and getting a restraining order against him. I congratulated her and about a week later she blocked me. I found out that same week that she and him were back together. I was so mad. I felt betrayed and vulnerable. I couldn’t believe she just went back just like that. My fiancé and I decided in that time as well to tie the knot in February while he was on leave. We got married and after he went back, a few weeks later I found out I was expecting. My husband and I are so excited! We’re having another baby girl. Fast forward to about 3 weeks ago and I notice that she (my ex’s new thing) had unblocked me (her name in my fb messenger went from fb user to her name on fb) I clicked on it wondering why she unblocked me all of a sudden and I see that she was now married to him since January 25th and that they were excitedly expecting a boy and that they were starting a book collection for the new baby with books from both of their childhoods. I couldnt be more sad and disappointed as well as disgusted. How do you go back to him after what he did to you and add a baby to the whole thing? How selfish was she? How could you acknowledge one child but not the other? She saw how he was treating my daughter, You can’t possibly want that for your baby too? I was confused and mad but chose to ignore it all. What can I do? Nothing. Not my mess, why stress…She chose what she wanted to do. All I can do is wish her well. A few days later she messaged me apologizing for blocking me and going back to him. She said he was a wordsmith and that she fell for his empty promises yet again. She apologized for not back me up legally and that she felt terrible about it all. I truly didn’t feel bad for her. She did this to her self and now she wants to come back and pretend she didn’t just marry the guy? Like she knew what he was capable of? How did you not see that coming? I told her I seriously could care less what she had to say and that I didn’t believe her. I asked did you not marry him and get pregnant by him?? Like you’re his wife? Shouldn’t you be having his back? You did this to your self. She responded with I know why you might be weary and I don’t blame you. I’m “really sorry” and I understand why you might not want to speak. I told her more or less to fuck off and that I couldn’t speak with her anymore. I asked her did she not marry him and is she not having a baby with him and her response was legally yes we’re married but we’re separated and I’m having a baby…what? So I signed off on that note and sent the gif “Sorrows, sorrows…prayers”….iykyk…so now that bring the question of the hour up….I’m being told by a cousin of mine that l vented to that I shouldn’t have responded like that and that I should have been nice and that she probably wanted to vent and bond. “Technically” her son is my daughters sibling….I’m sorry but I don’t feel responsible for making sure that they have a relationship. I don’t even know if that’s even really her sibling, furthermore, why is that my job? Her dad doesn’t even know her! Not my fault either. I can’t be held responsible for rounding up all of his potential kids and making sure that they have a relationship. Also how do I know that she (the new thing) isn’t lying? How do I know she isn’t going to go back to him? I don’t trust her. Im trying to protect my baby. AITA? Am I being too harsh?

2023.05.29 13:39 Johnny_Boy398 Africa Rework: The Leopard of the Congo Mobutu Sese Seko
| (This is part of an ongoing series, links to which will be posted in the comments below) The Nationalists of the “Mouvement Authenticité de la Révolution” (MAR) Who is Mobutu Sese Seko? Just another warlord who got a lucky break? A champion of the nation willing to do what is necessary for unity and freedom? A traitor to the people who was happy to crack congolese heads until his pay got cut? A revolutionary Father-Marshal or a reactionary kleptocrat? No one can say for sure, but when the Congo war begins in 1966 it will become clear what he wishes himself to be: the great liberator, unifyer, and undisputed master of the great Congo nation. And with Japanese help he may just pull it off. But no man is born great, and even the Fuhrer does not rule alone. So let us discover how Mobutu came to be, and what his victory will mean for the Congo and Africa at large. For the Japanese, who will become his greatest supporters and headaches, he is the African Oda Nobunaga: a martial and cruel man whose vision for unity and glory far outweighs whatever sins he may have committed. Always one for the cameras and adept at winning over an audience, Mobutu will successfully win over the Japanese public by playing the role of the justly tyrannical “Great Man”, even while he personally prefers western delicacies. Joseph-Désiré Mobutu lived an unremarkable life before being thrust into greatness. He was only 16 when the Congo was violently transferred from Belgian to German hands, and like many rebellious students he joined in the 1949 protests against the construction of the Congo dam, stowing away from boarding school to do so. In the aftermath of the MNC repression Mobutu was assigned to the still technically Belgian controlled Force Publique as punishment. Unlike many of his fellows however Mobutu immediately took to military life, embracing the strength, discipline and martial values it provided. In part because of this he served without noticeable disobedience, and was even bribed to be an informant on clandestine communist cells within the force, ratting out a few of his “comrades”. From the point of view of the Belgians he was a model soldier. But this was an act: in truth Mobutu never ceased holding resentment for his arrogant Belgian commanders or the priests who had “educated” him. Behind their back he was a contributor to the native underground press, writing under assumed names and attacking the Belgian presence. It came as quite a shock then when in 1955, as his mandated time in the force was drawing to a close, Mobutu did not accept demobilization quietly but instead went into revolt. It is still a matter of debate about what pushed him into this. He claims that this had been the plan all along, while cynics say the impending annexation of the belgian Congo by Zentralafrika forced him into it. Some think that his double life was about to be exposed, while the more conspiratorial leftists say that he never went into rebellion at all, and that his “revolt” was ordered by the Belgians as a way to counter the APL insurgency. But whatever the case it was here that the public figure was born. After killing several belgian officers and stealing as many weapons and valuables as they could Mobutu and his co-conspirators quickly fled east. This was not entirely unusual: the sudden annexation of the colony led to many sporadic demonstrations and revolts. But it immediately became clear that Mobutu had larger ambitions than these local disturbances. His strategy at this time was one of survival: he would only accept those who could move fast and hit hard, with his armed band always staying on the move as they fled to the east. But unlike other petty warlords he understood the importance of a political and social message for his long term survival, as well as local alliances. For this he essentially copied the platform of the now underground MNC while adhering to none of its tenants in reality: he would tell the people whatever they wanted to hear so long as it got him what he wanted. More practically he made tight alliances with local eastern notables as well as Tutsi refugees which had fled reprisals to the east. In this he was successful, forging for himself a loose alliance in the north east which permitted him to slip the noose where so many others were eventually caught. One of his most important lieutenants in these early days was Victor Nendaka Bika, his de facto “foreign minister” and torturer who would make initial contact with those Mobutu saw the need to coerce or charm. Unlike many warlords Mobutu never gave into the temptation to rule by fear alone, instead seeking to co-opt useful men into his own organization. But he was just as happy to let loose his jackal to show the consequences of disloyalty. These early years from 1956-1962 were defined at first by mere survival: banditry, illegal trade and bribery were the only ways to stay alive. But slowly, with plenty of self promotion to help it, Mobutu’s reputation as a survivor and a winner grew locally, and then regionally. As the remnants of failed rebels and warlords drifted into his growing camp Mobutu was able to step beyond being a bandit king and into becoming a local powerbroker. He had already made himself the allied protector of the Tutsi refugees, and soon after the APL’s protracted people's war in the north began he sought to become the patron of his own native Ngbandi people as well. Where he had the most power in the eastern fringes the pan-Africanist APL held the north, with the Ngbandi in the middle still “up for grabs” between the APL, Mobutu and the German administration. It is here that he first developed his own separate political platform: unwilling or unable to come to an agreement with either of the other two factions Mobutu began developing his own ideology of an “authentic” congolese nationalism which was opposed to both pan-african and communist radicalism, “self defeating” regionalism and demanded the full liberation of the congo from european imperialism. But most importantly to those who heard his call was for unity under Mobutu: if the African people remained divided and timid they would be slaves forever, and only a great leader like Mobutu could bring them true liberty. As one may expect, this call for subordination won him very few new friends. The see-saw of influence in the Congo north and east is set to be radically upended in 1962, as kommissar Krogmann finally thinks he has enough stability in the west to launch a pacification campaign. In this he will be superficially successful: all anti-German factions will be forced to retreat and large swaths of land will be returned to German control. But it will not accomplish its primary objective of capturing and killing the leadership: Mobutu will once again avoid the hangman and will return when the Zentralafrika army goes marching south to the SAW. And when he does it will be with a new purpose. Much of his army was scattered or deserted by the German offensive, with many of the local allies he thought were in his hands all but begging to come to terms with the Germans after he was forced out. He had survived yes, but only by the skin of his teeth: this time he would do things differently. Taking lessons from the APL he will return in 1964 as a popular revolutionary rather than as a mere warlord with a printing press. Though still not fully developed it is here that “Joseph-Désiré” would become “Sese Seko Kuku Ngbendu wa za Banga” or “The all-powerful warrior who, because of his endurance and inflexible will to win, goes from conquest to conquest, leaving fire in his wake”. A new ideology of “Authentic” nationalism came with this new name, seeking to truly win over the hearts of the people as well as the loyalty of their leaders. It was a threat and a promise, as he would go about tearing down symbols of westernism in his wake and giving personal “gifts” to people or organizations which he wished to win over. He also sought to portray himself as an avenging angel, throwing “bad actors” such as denounced priests and hated collaborators against the wall. This new ideology, disseminated through the “Manifesto of Goma” is long in emotion and short in concrete policy. As such it was quickly denounced by the intellectuals of the Pan-Africanists and Liberals as not a “real” ideology and merely a cheap populism. But it is taken deadly seriously by the newly declared Mouvement Authenticité de la Révolution: for its supporters it promises a true rebirth of the congolese people from within rather than without. The Congo would be purged of malignant western influence by remaking the congolese individual in body, mind and spirit. This was the way to true freedom and dignity, far more than mere “material conditions” or to ape their constitutions. With his newfound identity and strategy Mobutu will of course be a prime target for Huttig’s retribution, but as is always the case too few men and not enough supplies will stop Huttig from ever putting him down for good. Plus Mobutu had found a new friend: the Japanese. In the immediate aftermath of Huttig’s takeover the Japanese will support the APL, but will quickly grow disenchanted: the naked radicalism and distrustful nature of the APL will lead to the Japanese looking for a more reliable partner, and Mobutu will aggressively angle to become just that. After having been rejected by the Americans in favor of the MNC Mobutu is the only big game left in the Congo for Japan to back, and was always a master at co-option and personal magnetism. He will charm the Japanese mission to sing his praises in Tokyo, even if there is little they can do for him at the moment. This will change when Huttig dies: taking a gamble Mobutu will strike at Stanleyville, successfully forcing the retreating garrison to leave behind most of their weapons and capturing an airport through which he will finally have solid connections with the outside world. The bad blood between him and the MNC and APL will mean that there is no choice but to fight it out as the Congo war begins in 1966, this time with Japan backing him to the hilt. Mobutu now seeks to become a legend. Already having gained a personal mythos after having been declared dead by the Germans several times, his wartime strategy will be to force the mass mobilization of the population. Under his personal name and with the backing of Japan he will force every man who comes under his control into his army, seeking to form a tidal wave of men which will overwhelm his enemies and make up for his lack of supply. If an enemy cannot be rooted out with simple force of numbers, it will be the job of his all Ngbandi “Leopard Division” or even better of Japanese “volunteers” to root them out. The success of this strategy is heavily dependent on momentum, and will rely on Japanese backing to arm itself. But if it is successful Zentralafrika will be no more, and neither will the Congo: The Republic of Zaire will rise as the newest power in Africa under the leadership of the nation's great guide: Mobutu Sese Seko. After a partial demobilization and a reconfirming of his alliance with “internal allies” such as the Tutsi under François Rukeba and the Bakongo under Holden Roberto he will initiate a grand campaign of national revolution and self aggrandizement: Zairianization. Asian inspired architecture of the newly built Presidential Palace. Among those celebrating the creation of Zaire will be the Japanese. All sides have poured a great deal of resources into the conflict, and the victory of Mobutu will doubtless be a strategic boon for Japanese influence on the continent. Mobutu for his part recognizes the usefulness of his new “friends”, but neither side is blinded by the propaganda: the dangers and opportunities of Nationalism are all too familiar. As mentioned in my previous post there are several common issues which any native unifyer must account for. The first among these is The Looming Famine: in the aftermath of years of war and mismanagement the supply of food to urban areas is critically unstable. And it is in this issue that the weaknesses of Mobutu’s regime will first be seen. Mobutu’s agricultural reform centers mostly on seizing land owned by the whites and his political enemies, and then redistributing it to himself, his political allies, and occasionally to the people. As everything with the Zairean revolution the purpose is twofold: to meet the needs of the people and to entrench Mobutu's personal political power. But often the second goal far outstrips the first: many of the people who gain this land do not know how to use the land productively, or if they do, are more interested in producing cash crops than they are in food staples. This is certainly the case for the massive amounts of land brought under Mobutu’s personal ownership, which will most often continue to grow the same way as the colonial plantations they were before. This reckless reorganization and focus on exports ensure that hunger will be an early and acute crisis for Zaire. The issue will be solved slowly, as roads are repaired and the rhythm of agricultural life is no longer disrupted by war, but the people need food now and more than anything else it is cassava and rice which the people demand from their leaders. It is by meeting this need that Japanese influence first becomes a powerful thing. Though motivated in part by genuine charity from well off Asians, the provision of food and aid is also cynically used by the Japanese state to buy the support of the people and the local power brokers away from Mobutu, and towards themselves. This aid, plus the government's own subsidies of food imports, plus the natural healing from war, will lead to the crisis fading away but leaving all sides on notice that the future of Zaire is still being made, and that the Japanese are a major player in it. The Mutilated Independence: The inability of Mobutu to take Leopoldville during the independence war is a blow to Mobutu’s prestige, not to mention Zaire as a whole. However he is pragmatic enough and has enough friends in Japan to hash out a deal with Nigeria and Gabon: the loss of the major port will not strangle Congolese exports or imports, only make them more expensive. But for both political and economic reasons the retaking of Leopoldville and the Kabinda port remain absolutely vital to the continued reign of Mobutu. To this end Mobutu’s solution to retaking Leopoldville is direct conquest, not because he can think of no other option but because it will give him the greatest personal prestige as a great conqueror. As such along with his policy of “Zairianization” and economic consolidation he will also invest a great deal into the army. This army will see its strength tested as Mobutu tries to expand his influence beyond the Zaireian borders. Gabon may be protected by America, but unleashing blitz style attacks on Angola and Rwanda is fair game. In Angola he will seek to set up Holden Roberto as a fellow autocratic “Authenticité” leader by supporting his meager army against the warring angolan factions in an attempted knockout blow. In Rwanda he will need to be somewhat more cautious (unless something very bad happens) but ultimately seeks to return Kigeli V to the throne on the backs of his long time exile allies. In this way he will both expand his influence as well as surround Leopoldville with friendly regimes. When the oil crisis hits Mobutu will leap at the opportunity to crush the Germans by launching an all out assault on “Festung Leopoldville”, and if successful will greatly increase his prestige, as well as rehabilitate his image in the eyes of other revolutionary leaders as a “true revolutionary”. If he fails in these wars however he will decline, and need to lean ever more heavily on Japan to prop himself up. This is somewhat awkward for Japan itself: having previously backed leftist movements as their best options they must now choose between their old allies and the new anti-leftist gambles taken by Mobutu. But despite the heartburn Zaire is simply too valuable in the african chaos for Japan to not continue supporting it, and so the rising sun shall backstab their allies in the name of pragmatism to the benefit of Mobutu. And besides, these new factions typically promess a better deal than the socialists did. Mobutu walks a fine line in African politics: though he has denounced the APL’s brand of pan-africanism he also wishes to be seen as a great revolutionary. Surrounded as he is by pan-african or otherwise revolutionary movements it is only good sense to say you are one of them. And to many Mobutu is just that: a liberating revolutionary who both freed and united great swaths of africa from pernicious white influence. But for the wider Marxist inspired world of African liberation his clear anti-communist is difficult to accept, no matter how well he speaks the language of pan-african pride. Lingering Regionalism: In this question Mobutu is the most radical, and his policy is what you may know him for OTL. While all revolutionaries desire to establish a united identity, and some of them will do so by autocratic centralization, Mobutu makes the establishment of a “true” Zaireian nation a core part of his rule. As established in the Manifesto of Goma Mobutu promesses a national revolution in which regionalism will be swept away by a new, authentic program of nation building which will decolonize the Congolese mind as well as their hands. In practical terms this means the creation of a totalitarian state which will regulate and make “african” all aspects of life. Western influence will be attacked via the banning of christian names and nationalizing catholic church property. A citizen dress code will be implemented as well as a “traditional” family code which will favor male-dominated polygamy and property laws. Though his own praetorian guard of the leopard division is tribally biased the army as a whole will have a new organization forbidding any unit to be more than 20% uniform in tribal origin. This campaign is carried out with special zeal against the influence of Catholicism. Seeing it as both a challenge to his own power and as a malignant foreign influence Mobutu will make a great show of putting priests on trial and instructing his followers to declare that Mubutu is like Jesus and the MAR like the church. Schools, previously run almost exclusively by religious organizations, will be nationalized and their curriculum no longer permitted to teach Christianity but instead to teach “Mobutuism”. Though he will not have the strength needed to wipe out the church entirely during the 60s or early 70s Mobutu will be able to effectively cow this institution and dare any priest to say “sacrilege”. This campaign will provide a degree of unity, pride and self confidence to the shattered nation beyond what any other program could do, but it is all provided through the image of Mobutu as the great sun king of the new nation. Mobutu will seek to become the center of a pseudo-religious cult of personality with mass public celebrations of his figure following him wherever he goes and an entourage singing songs in his praise. A consequence of the personalism in this campaign is than any embarrassing failures will not only reflect poorly on the nation but on Mobutu himself. As such he will often get worked up by seemingly trivial matters: if the football team should be lucky enough to participate in the world cup they will do so under the threat that if they do not perform well enough it will see retribution on them at home. But as part of building this cult he must never let any other person, even his own children, get a moment in the spotlight. Below him is transient chaos, while above him is none: he alone is the rock on which Zaire can be built. This policy is most clearly seen in his handling of the Warlord Plague. Here Mobutu has a two sided policy: All those military figures which he believes could pose a threat to his rule will at first be executed publicly and brutally. In the opening months of his reign he will institute a mini reign of terror to make an example of many warlords and political enemies. However, once the example has been made he will move on to a policy of co-opting these same men. Often through direct bribery, or through positions of prestige and other perks, local strongmen who will accept his rule are brought into the state machine by promising the opportunity to profit in exchange for loyalty. This opportunity is often revoked without notice or reason and personal rivalry at the top is encouraged: in this way no other individual is able to form a stable powerbase. But at the same time individuals previously kicked out of power may be rehabilitated just as quickly, rising once again to wealth and prestige on the auspices of Mobutu’s favor. In this way no elite is a permanent outsider, and the best move for many will seem to be “wait and see”. This of course makes the internal administration of the nation hell, but it does keep Mobutu in undisputed power without even the glimmer of a rival. This policy of personal co-option extends even to The Belgian Question. The Europeans remaining property will be nationalized and they will be deported, but it will not come with the punitive brutality of the pan-africanists. Mobutu has no love for the Belgians, and will not tolerate their continued dominance, but he also has no special hatred for them, seeing them mostly as political liabilities and rivals rather than ideology defining enemies: that distinction goes to the Germans. But after this show of nationalistic force the door will be left open to their return: many of the nationalized properties are redistributed to those without the knowledge, skill or desire to maintain their productivity. As such when those same Europeans are offered the chance to buy back their property or even return to the Congo Mobutu will not get in their way: so long as they avoid getting lynched along the way by Mobutu’s notoriously brutal and poorly disciplined soldiers he will let them have their piece too so long as they accept that it is by his grace alone that they keep it. Part of this leniency is out of a calculated mercy to Europeans: Mobutu is smart enough to know that making himself solely reliant on Japan is a poor strategy, and will seek to make connections with America, Italy and Brazil. Having mercy on the Belgians and keeping the door open to cooperation with the Euros is an easy way to mollify western opinion and thus maintain his own independence on the world stage. Of course even this policy has limits: Germany and those under her will see the door slammed shut. Which brings us neatly into the great struggle which defines the early Mobutu regime: addressing the Economic Devastation. In keeping with his Authenticité program Mobutu wishes to nationalize all previously foreign owned industry, which is the vast majority of all industry, under the one-party state. These national corporations, modeled off of the Japanese Zaibatsu and Italian corporatism, will be either controlled directly by Mobutu, by his close political allies, or (to his own displeasure) by East Asians, most often the Japanese. Mobutu’s Japanese backers are willing to prop up his regime, to allow whatever social and political organization he wishes, but they have come to the Congo for a reason. That reason is money and resources, and with Authenticité pushing for the cartelization of all money in the Congo the Japanese demand to be let in. Mobutu cannot simply dismiss them: it is Japanese credit and weapons which ensure he stays secure and on top. But he is also unwilling to simply roll over for them: he is a nationalist and a deeply ambitious man, and will not be satisfied with anything less than personal ownership of the Zaire economy. As such the 60s and early 70s will be a contest between true Mobutu loyalists and pro-Japanese opportunists for who will gain a majority share of the new nation's economic resources. Japan offers cash, guns, food, technical advisors and diplomatic support (all of which Zaire really needs) in return for shares in the national corporations and local extractions. They will also play dirty by employing bribes, intimidation tactics, organized crime and even clandestine support of anti-mobutu civil resistance to put pressure on the regime to open up more space for the Japanese. To counter this Mobutu has all the tools of the state at his disposal, as well as the mobilization of his own hard core group of supporters for intimidation or political pressure on local leaders. “Kazi ndjo baba, ndjo mama” (work, it is my father, it is my mother), is a common phrase in Katanga which alludes to the paternalist role played by large companies such as the Union Minière, which would provide housing, education, and sometimes even wives to their workers in exchange for productive loyalty. Even after the full German takeover “company work” maintained a facade of this relationship. Japan is well positioned to take up the old Union Minière paternalism tactics, offering workers higher and more regular pay than what native organizations sometimes can, while also reinforcing a culture of dependency which Mobutu is trying to break (or bend to his own ends). It is this contest for the hard cash and rare metals provided by the Congo which will determine the final form the Authenticité regime takes. If Mobutu is victorious and secures the lion's share of the economy for himself and a large enough share for his allies the Zairean Revolution will be complete with major bonuses to stability and political power, and even more importantly to Mobutu’s personal fortune. Though never giving public access to his personal books Mobutu will be plausibly rumored to be worth billions, with he and his family being some of the foremost african business people in the world and minor celebrities in the co-prosperity sphere. However the economy will suffer greatly from this as all economic efficiency and business skill has been sacrificed in the name of Mobutu’s personal power: though he is the undisputed master of Zaire it will be a deeply dysfunctional country economically, and if commodity prices were to fall he may need to go crawling back to the outside world to bail him out. On the other hand if Japan wins Zaire will become a neo-colonial strip, with its most lucrative industries owned in part or in full by the Japanese and the state unable to do anything about it without critically undermining its own elite support. This will make Mobutu into only a multi-millionaire rather than a billionaire, as well as undermine his public image of all powerful invincibility. With the Japanese ambassador keeping a hawkish eye on him and his party Mobutu will be left to stew in his unhappy lot knowing that if he ceases to play the part assigned to him the Japanese can always find someone else. This will also be the end of the Authentice campaign as even uneducated workers can see that their bread comes not from “Father Marshal” but from their places of work, owned by foreigners once again. But it is arguably better economically, as the extractive industries are at least run competently and its workers will be paid in full and on time more often. In all cases Zaire will be a sphere observer, but in this case it will be a part of the Japanese economic sphere as well. The later 70s and 80s will be difficult times for either end as prices crash and the cumulative effects of bad government and foreign domination come to the fore. But that is a story for another day. Japan or Mobutu, success or failure, unity or farce, one thing remains constant: the Zairean military officers are the new nobility of the new nation. Corruption is an endemic and potentially crippling issue in Zaire, and this is seen most clearly in the military, where officers will steal wages and army units will act close to bandits in the more remote regions, creating an atmosphere of fear. But the best position is that of an Air Force officer, with prominent families often paying through the nose for their sons to be educated in Japanese military academies to earn their wings. submitted by Johnny_Boy398 to TNOmod [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 13:34 Healthlinefix What is the safest way to make yourself pass out (Faint)?
If you're interested in simulating unconsciousness for acting or prank purposes, it's important to approach it with caution. Rapidly transitioning from a lying or sitting position can result in lightheadedness due to a temporary decrease in blood flow to the brain. While inducing this sensation is possible, it's crucial to note that it carries inherent risks, including potential vomiting, nausea, and even fatal outcomes. If you choose to explore this, it is imperative to prioritize safety and educate yourself on proper techniques to minimize harm.
- Burn Out Your Oxygen
Breathe rapidly or take deep breaths while seated on the ground. Maintain this pattern for approximately one minute, then rise to your feet. Remember to hold your breath as you stand up.
Sit on the ground and engage in rapid, deep breathing. Keep up this pace for about a minute before standing up. Be sure to momentarily halt your breath as you get up.
While seated on the ground, hyperventilate or take quick, deep breaths. Continue doing this for roughly a minute before standing up. Remember to cease breathing as you rise.
Take fast, deep breaths or hyperventilate while sitting on the ground. Sustain this rhythm for approximately a minute, then proceed to stand up. Remember to halt your breathing upon getting up.
Engage in rapid, deep breathing or hyperventilation while seated on the ground. Keep up this pace for about a minute before standing up. Ensure that you momentarily stop breathing upon standing.
2- Hold Your Breath
Experiment with breath-holding to temporarily deprive your brain of oxygen. By doing so, you can trigger a state of oxygen deficiency in your body, causing your brain to enter a state of "crisis mode." If you manage to hold your breath for a few minutes, you may experience dizziness and lightheadedness for a brief period.
Explore the effects of oxygen deprivation by practicing breath-holding. When you hold your breath, your body experiences an oxygen deficit, prompting your brain to enter a state of "crisis mode." If you can maintain breath-holding for a few minutes, you may encounter temporary dizziness and lightheadedness.
Induce a temporary shortage of oxygen in your body by holding your breath. This state of oxygen deficiency will trigger your brain's "crisis mode" response. If you can manage to hold your breath for a few minutes, you may experience short-lived dizziness and a feeling of lightheadedness.
Discover the effects of oxygen deprivation by attempting breath-holding. When you hold your breath, your body experiences a decreased oxygen supply, leading your brain to enter a state of "crisis mode." If you succeed in holding your breath for a few minutes, you may encounter temporary dizziness and a sense of lightheadedness.
Explore the impact of oxygen restriction by practicing breath-holding. By withholding your breath, you create a deficiency of oxygen in your body, triggering your brain to enter a state of "crisis mode." If you can sustain breath-holding for a few minutes, you may experience a temporary sensation of dizziness and lightheadedness.
3- Breathe Against Your Thumb
Engage in thumb breathing by placing your thumb against your lips and inhaling through the tiny gap. This technique can help you regulate your breath and promote a sense of calmness.
Explore the practice of breathing against your thumb by gently covering your lips with your thumb and inhaling slowly. This method can aid in controlling your breath and promoting relaxation.
Discover the technique of breathing against your thumb, where you create a slight obstruction by placing your thumb against your lips and inhaling deeply. This approach can assist in regulating your breathing pattern and inducing a sense of tranquility.
Experiment with the method of breathing against your thumb, wherein you softly press your thumb against your lips and take deliberate, controlled breaths. This technique can help you focus on your breath and promote a feeling of serenity.
Try out thumb breathing by positioning your thumb gently on your lips and inhaling slowly through the small gap. This practice can enhance breath awareness and encourage a state of inner calmness.
4- Stop Eating
Consider taking a break from eating to allow your body to rest and reset. Temporarily refraining from food intake can provide your digestive system with a much-needed break and allow you to listen to your body's hunger cues.
Explore the concept of temporarily discontinuing food consumption to give your body a chance to rejuvenate. Taking a break from eating can assist in promoting mindful eating habits and a better understanding of your body's nutritional needs.
Take a pause from eating as a means to give your body a break from digestion. By abstaining from food temporarily, you can provide your digestive system with an opportunity to rest and restore its balance.
Engage in a period of abstaining from food to give your body a chance to recalibrate. Pausing your eating routine can help you tune in to your body's signals of hunger and fullness, promoting a healthier relationship with food.
Consider implementing a short-term break from eating to allow your body to recharge and recalibrate. By refraining from food consumption for a limited period, you can focus on mindful eating practices and develop a greater awareness of your body's nutritional needs.
5- Try to inhale Smoke
Inhaling a significant amount of cigarette smoke into your lungs and briefly holding it can result in severe lightheadedness. Nonetheless, it's essential to note that smoking poses serious health risks, making this method hazardous and not recommended for inducing loss of consciousness.
6- Stop Using Blood Pressure Drugs
Ceasing the use of blood pressure medication can potentially trigger a fainting episode in individuals with hypertension. However, it's crucial to emphasize that discontinuing prescribed medication is dangerous and can have adverse health consequences. Therefore, we strongly advise against pursuing this method as it jeopardizes your well-being.

2023.05.29 13:09 Ok-Tumbleweed-8176 My (late) mom wrote a book about my abusive ndad
I’m the 42 yr old daughter of an ndad. I’ve been NC with ndad for almost 2 years and it’s been the best 2 years of my life. This community has been incredibly helpful in my healing process. I haven’t made any substantive posts here yet, but there are a few that have been brewing for several months. I think now is a good time to actually write them out and post them. The first is about my mom’s written accounts of ndad’s narcissistic abuse on our family.
My mom died in 2015, before I knew anything about narcissistic abuse and while I was still completely gaslit by my ndad and still believed a lot of his smear campaign against her. I very much wish she was still around to discuss all the damage ndad inflicted on our whole family. Mom was a writer, though, and I have her journals and published works from the final 20 years of her life. I’ve studied them carefully over the past 2 years and they’re helpful in confirming that ndad was definitely abusive and it’s not “all in my head”.
Several pieces of mom’s writing would probably be worthwhile to share in this forum, but the one I’ll start with is a snippet from a novel she published when I was about 20 years old. The book is based on a factual account of my family’s lives up until that point in time (2002), and then it shifts into a dramatic murdemystery story about an imagined future for our characters, including a tasty revenge plot against ndad. Satisfying revenge aside, several of the factual portions have been very eye opening and helpful for me in understanding the way mom conceptualized what was happening in our family.
I’ll start by quoting the text, and then share my thoughts about it. (Note: All our names were changed in the book, so I’m not redacting them because they’re pseudonyms. My mom is the narrator, I’m “Stacy”, ndad is “Randall”, and my younger sister is “Shea”.)
"As Stacy grew into a young teen, I could sense a major problem growing in my household. Randall was threatened by Stacy's intellect and would stifle her voice when she would assert an opinion contrary to his. His method of stifling was to glare at her with an angry stare, his eyes bugging out of their sockets, a vein popping out of his forehead, and then holler at her in a belittling and disrespectful way. This would send Stacy fleeing from the dinner table in tears of anger and embarrassment. I was thoroughly disgusted that a grown man would try to weaken his daughter's self-development, including her need to examine society and herself. Stacy wasn't surprised when I left her father. My mistake was that I didn't have him removed from my home, but rather fled in fear of my safety. He had discovered I was having an affair with Dante. I went to my brother's house, and while I stayed there Randall was using Stacy as his counselor. He gave her intimate details of our love life and read her my journal involving intimate details of my love affair with Dante. Stacy later told me that it made her sick every time her father would ask her to take a ride in the car with him. During those rides he would sob and tell her disturbing details of adult life at its worst. I still feel guilty, to this day, for not having been there to protect both of my daughters from the worst kind of abuse that their own father was perpetuating, to his total ignorance. Shea was told that I didn't want my old family anymore. Stacy was told the same, and given a vulgar picture of her mother. The girls were 10 and 15 at the time, and I should have kicked the bas\*** out of the house with a court order rather than turning and running on my own behalf. God forgive me for my selfishness."*
Here’s what stands out to me about the piece:
- The description of ndad’s rage face. It’s burned into my memory and she describes it perfectly. It also resembles how I’ve heard many other people describe narcissists’ facial expressions.
- Mom’s description of my emotions as “anger and embarrassment”. It’s apt, but I’d also add fear, confusion, shock, and humiliation to the mix. I rarely knew what would set him off at that time in my life. It always felt like stepping on a land mine or something.
- The car rides. I’d forgotten about (blocked?) them until I read this. They were awful.
- I’m pretty sure ndad using me as a “counselor” and reading me explicit contents from mom’s journals would be considered a form of covert incest… can anyone confirm whether I’m thinking about that correctly?
- I share mom’s wish that she’d kicked him out instead of running and only saving herself. (Ultimately, she didn’t truly save herself - her downfall after leaving the family was a pretty horrific spiral until her death thanks to a lifetime of n-abuse first by her parents, then by my ndad, and finally by 2 more npartners.)
- I find it interesting that mom didn’t play the “traditional” role of enabler in our family. This led to a lot of confusion for me as I untangled the truth about my dysfunctional family system and tried to figure out what role everyone played. Turns out ndad’s mother who was our nanny and “housekeeper” played that role. It’s almost like mom and I played the roles of dual scapegoats. Is that possible? Has anyone else experienced a dynamic like that?
Again, I appreciate this community very much, and if mom were still around I suspect she’d be an active participant in RBN too. I’d love to hear any thoughts you might have, especially on #4 and #6. Thanks so much.

2023.05.29 12:58 Finzombie The Thing in the Cracks Part 2
This is Part 2 because of the character limit, go here to get caught up: https://www.reddit.com/TheDarkGathering/comments/13urkbj/the_thing_in_the_cracks_part_1/ Talbot awoke in a round corridor. At least he thought that’s what it was. The corridor seemed to be made of dark stone, rough and ridged like a worm’s tunnel, but on a massive scale. Despite no visible light source, Talbot found he could make out every detail in the space around him.
Talbot shakily stood up and considered his situation. His hands were shaking. He supposed nearly getting killed by lethal injection and then shattering the very fabric of reality itself took a toll on the psyche. He reflexively reached for his notebook to note that down, and with a pang remembered that it was gone. He would likely never see it again.
Glancing around, Talbot wondered at how normal everything looked, considering he was in the fifth dimension. There was likely more going on under the surface, but from his vantage it just looked like an oddly lit cave.
Talbot noted that there was no sign of Willis. He’d distinctly remembered the other man getting pulled through time and space with him, but at some point during the traversal his hand had been wrenched away from Talbot’s wrist. Had he been shunted back to their reality, or was he here somewhere?
A deep rumble began to grow beneath Talbot’s feet. The entire cave shook like an earthquake as Talbot scrambled to the side of the tube.
Confused, the man glanced around. He saw no probable cause for the rumbling, no subterranean vehicles or even geological fissures that could explain the vibrations.
Turning, he realized with a start that the rumbling was slightly stronger on one side of him. If it was directional, there was an actual source, not just a general shaking of the environment.
Talbot began moving away from the rumbling, as it continued to grow stronger.
Eventually, he broke into a full run as everything around him shook. He felt like his skull was going to burst. It felt like something was chasing him, a massive subterranean beast.
As the rumbling kept growing, Talbot tripped. Out of nowhere, his foot slipped and he sprawled to the ground, crying out as he landed on his arm. He tried to get back up, which was when he realized there was something right behind him.
Talbot hit the deck, right as something zoomed directly above his head. Wind pulled at his hair and it felt like he was directly under a train.
Talbot screamed, but it was drowned out by the impossibly loud
whoosh of the thing above him. He gingerly flipped onto his back, barely staying clear of the surface of whatever was making the sound, in order to see what was above him.
There was nothing but empty space.
Then, he could suddenly see a long gray tube rushing past impossibly quickly. Then it was gone again, but the rushing was still there. It was blinking in and out of existence, only appearing for short bursts, but still there in its invisible state. Talbot realized that it must be dipping in and out of the Fifth Dimension, his own limited perception unable to comprehend its greater state.
Eventually, the thing slowed and stopped. As it was still, Talbot got a better look at it.
It was definitely organic. The exterior of the tube had a pale gray color, with a texture not unlike skin. However, as opposed to the neat, even lines separating cells on human skin, the striations on the thing seemed almost random, forming a surface that, although smooth, had the jagged impression of rough crags.
As Talbot examined the thing and wished he’d brought a camera, he heard something. From the object’s direction of origin, a deep groan emanated from lord-knew-where. Talbot winced as it hit his ears, the bellow deafening. He could immediately detect three things about the cry, judging by the cadence and the way it had slowly grown from an origin point. First, it definitely came from a living thing. Nothing artificial made that noise. Second, it came from very far away. And thirdly, it came from something massive. Impossibly so.
From the other direction, so comparably quiet he barely heard, Talbot made out a shriek that was horribly human.
The thing above him shifted and despite having almost a foot of clearance, Talbot instinctively sucked in his gut.
The tube… the limb began moving in the opposite direction, back towards its origin point.
Like a train, it started slowly but accelerated quickly, beginning to blink in and out of Talbot’s vision once again.
Talbot heard the scream again, closer this time. It seemed likely that whatever this thing was had found and grabbed another person.
After several long moments, the end of the limb finally reached Talbot, shooting past and above him like a tape measure shooting back into its shell when a button was pressed.
After it passed, Talbot sprang to his feet and finally got a good look at the end of the thing’s limb. The actual tube rounded off, dispelling any predictions about a monstrous tentacle. However, what was on the end of the limb may’ve been even more horrible.
Four long finger-like appendages were arranged around the limb radially, each one emerging from the edge of the flat tendril end. They were unnaturally thin, and despite somewhat resembling fingers, they had no visible knuckles and were tipped with sharp claws that appeared to be made of bone. They bent in, each holding their prey in place. Their prey in question was Tim Willis, currently pulling against the monstrous cage. The four outer digits pressed on each of his limbs, drawing blood where they poked him.
The limb, and Willis with it, disappeared around a bend in the tunnel. Talbot ran after it. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do, or if he was going to save the man, but he knew that no matter what happened, he wanted to see it.
For a long while Talbot chased the thing, barely keeping pace due to his cardio experience. During the run, whatever existed here continued bellowing, getting louder each time. In addition, each time he set his foot down, the ground felt slightly warmer.
Eventually he fell back, and lost sight of the thing completely. It was impressive that a man of his age and lifestyle had managed to follow the thing for so long, but he had to take a knee as exhaustion racked him. He continued following its path, but at a slower pace.
Eventually Talbot emerged into a much larger chamber. The air here was blistering, and the intermittent bellows had grown so loud that Talbot had to cover his ears every few minutes to keep from suffering permanent damage.
This cavern left him speechless.
Unlike the passage, with its unidentifiable neutral lighting, this cavern was dark, intermittently lit by what appeared to be giant glowworms, each perched on a rock surface and oozing an ugly orange aura into the space around it.
Less than half of the room was lit, but it was enough for Talbot to see that the remaining more-than-half was taken up by a monstrous… thing the same shade as the limb.
It was like a spider, in the same way that a massive dragonfish from the bottom of the sea is like a goldfish. Its main body was shaped like a blimp, and about the size of one too. A large abdomen sagged beneath it as it hung in the exact center of the room, and eight radially symmetrical limbs stuck to eight points around the cavern, suspending it in the middle of the room, and making it look like the center of a giant wheel, each limb serving as the spokes.
This facsimile was somewhat broken by the auxiliary limbs attached to its thorax, countless smaller tendrils identical to the one that held Willis. Some hovered around the thing’s ‘face’, while others darted towards countless holes in the rock around the cavern. As they moved, they blinked in and out of Talbot’s vision as they tapped into primordial forces beyond his eyes.
The cavern was dotted with holes, all exactly the same size and shape as the one Talbot stood in the lip of now. He realized that this thing and its countless appendages must’ve bored into the stone around it, creating a labyrinthine lair not dissimilar to an ant’s hive, but with one crucial difference. Rather than hundreds of tiny workers, this entire place had been built by, and for, one monstrous being.
Talbot was so stunned by the beast that he didn’t notice one of its many tendrils coming straight for him.
It appeared directly in front of his face, resulting in a jumpscare that sent him tumbling backwards, falling onto his back.
The thing moved like a snake, if a snake was constantly flipping between visible and invisible.
It struck, speeding downwards towards the chemist. Talbot braced for impact, but just before it could hit him it disappeared.
Talbot sat relieved, as it had apparently teleported somewhere else.
That was until it reappeared with the fingers around his torso.
The tendril had re-manifested just past him, the fingers clipping partway into the floor as they cradled him. Talbot felt four small pricks in his back and the backs of his thighs, where the claws had pierced his flesh.
The thing pulled him upwards, the fingers embedded in the ground breaking out of the stone beneath him and sending chunks of rock several feet in all directions.
The tendril shot up towards the ceiling of the cavern, rising what must’ve been 60 feet in half a second. Talbot could barely see the ground around the tendril, far enough below to dizzy him.
Talbot saw stars.
Talbot wished he could see the stars.
The tendril took him, in a daze, towards the thing’s face. As Talbot grew closer, he heard a ragged hissing, like an oxygen tank leaking. He realized it was the monster breathing, but immediately was unsure once its head turned toward him.
Its head was roughly human-shaped, but utterly inhuman in every other way. Five dark pits, facsimiles of eyes, were arranged in a pentagonal shape on the top half of its face. The bottom half was flat skin, but flat skin that seemed to be vertically stretched, as though it’d been draped over some opening. That was possibly where the breathing was coming from, but there was no way to tell with no actually apparent orifice.
The thing seemed to sniff Talbot, despite having no nose. Then it turned, and brought another piece of potential food to its head.
With a start, Talbot realized Willis was still alive. Or at least, unconsumed. He hung limp from his tendril, held in place by the finger-things and seemingly unconscious.
But the Thing wasn’t interested in either of them, not yet at least. It brought one of its tendrils up to its head before plunging it directly toward a nearby rock face. Right before it made contact, it disappeared.
Talbot reached towards Willis, but he was just outside of his reach. He didn’t want to yell to the man. The thing had no ears, but there was no guarantee that it couldn’t hear somehow.
The tendril that the thing had sent away reappeared, seemingly partially buried in the rock face. The thing wrenched its tendril from the rock, leaving behind a shallow pockmark in the cave.
Skewered on the spine was a small man. He flailed wildly and screamed something in a language Talbot didn’t know. He was wearing a business suit, but his pants were around his ankles, with baby blue boxers underneath.
Talbot wondered where he’d come from, then realized with a start that he’d likely originated from the real world. Meaning that this thing could reach beyond this reality and into their reality. Oh shit. Maybe he should’ve listened to Talc. If he and Willis hadn’t breached the Fifth Dimension, maybe the thing couldn’t’ve done the same, and this man might still be safe out there.
The thing brought the man towards its face and did the strange sniffing motion again. Satisfied, it brought him even closer. Talbot, despite himself, was curious to see how it consumed prey, and so paused in his attempts to wake Willis in order to watch.
The man screamed as the tendril brought him right up to the thing’s face, and then the thing’s face disappeared, moving through the Fifth Dimension in the same way as its tendrils.
When it reappeared, it was halfway inside the man, the smooth layer of skin clipped through his abdomen.
The thing pulled its head back.
Talbot turned away as a bloodcurdling scream and a terrible ripping sound reverberated through the cavern. He reached for Willis again, and to his surprise, found that he could reach him. He tapped him on the shoulder, and when he got no response, he slapped him in the face. Willis stirred, and slowly opened his eyes. He put a hand to his face and frowned. “Ow,” he said quietly.
Talbot put a finger to his lips and indicated the beast’s head with his eyes, and the gruesome consumption of the poor man.
Willis seemed to get the message. He quietly started prying each finger off of his body, praying that the thing had no nerves in the spines.
Talbot turned back towards the creature, which had repeated the teleportation maneuver a few more times before finally swallowing what remained of the man. Seemingly not quite satiated, Talbot’s tendril began to move as it pulled him closer to its face.
Talbot’s eyes widened and he looked back at Willis in fear. The man made a motion that suggested Talbot should try to stay calm, and that Willis would be along as soon as he’d freed himself.
Talbot tensed as he was pulled along, not wanting to be brought any closer to the monster. The thing brought him up to its face, and seemed to study him with the light-sensitive divots in its face. Talbot glanced back at Willis to see that he’d moved 2 of 4 fingers out of place. The larger man shot him a reassuring nod.
Turning back to the monster, Talbot realized that the other man wouldn’t get here in time. The thing was already lunging its head forward, and it blinked away.
It reappeared with Talbot’s shins inside its face. Behind the skin, Talbot’s feet could feel a damp cavity, so there was presumably a mouth of some sort behind the surface, and it wasn’t just solid flesh. A row of teeth closed around his legs, but not hard. They worked more to keep him in place than to actually damage his legs.
Talbot took a second to wonder why the hell he was considering the consumption mechanics of something that was actively chopping off his legs.
The tendril moved backwards, pulling Talbot away from the thing.
These last few lucid seconds, Talbot’s brain reverted to factory reset settings. Instead of hearing the wet tear of both his legs, or the strangely cartoonish wet
pop as the bones in both his shins were yanked away from his kneecaps, he found himself focusing on the strangest things.
Talbot considered the glowworms. Were they native to the Fifth Dimension, or had they come here from his, or another, Earth? If they were native, the convergent evolution with Earth glowworms, especially in an environment so alien, was coincidental to an unfathomable degree. If they had originated from Earth, however, why the orange glow? No glow worms on Earth glowed orange. Also, if they were Earthly, why did the thing not eat them? Did it only eat humans? Was it that cunning? That cruel?
Oh, Talbot realized,
I’m falling.
He blacked out before hitting the ground.
Talbot’s first thought upon waking up was,
Holy shit, I’m still alive. His second thought was,
Holy shit, how the hell am I still alive? His inner ear told him he was prone, but it’d been on the fritz ever since he’d arrived, so he opened his eyes to make sure. They confirmed what his ear was saying, and he took a quick second to thank all his organs for functioning so well under stress.
Willis sat next to him, notably more intact. He was wearing no shirt, and both his abdomen wound and Talbot’s stubs were bound in the fabric of an Anderson Innovations janitor’s uniform.
Talbot started staring at his abs, which caused Willis to glance down at him.
The other man cleared his throat. “Oh, you’re still alive?”
Talbot nodded softly. “Does it not know where we are?”
“Not yet,” Willis shrugged, “It has no eyes and didn’t see us escape, so it’s sending out tendrils through each passage, and hasn’t picked this one yet. I guess we got lucky when I dragged you in here.”
“Yeah. Why is that, by the way? You were just about to kill me before I trapped you in a hellish cave dimension.” He considered his words. “Which would only be more reason to kill me.”
Willis shook his head and chuckled tiredly. “Call me an idealist, but I didn’t join a group called the Agency for the Preservation of Humanity to kill people. I’m not good at holding grudges.”
“Then why were you gonna kill me when we were still out there?”
“It’s different. I had orders. Now Talc isn’t here, so it’s my decision. The real question is how are you still alive even
with my intervention?”
Talbot shrugged, which made him dizzy. “ I’m on my way out. That blood loss will kill me in a couple minutes, if that thing doesn’t find us first.”
Talbot glanced around the environment for the first time, and realized they were once again in one of the small side tubes. Loud bellowing filled the air as the thing presumably scoured its domain for the two men.
“Well, at least our sacrifice will save the rest of humanity.” Willis proclaimed.
Talbot chortled.
“What?” Willis responded.
“Didn’t you see the other guy get eaten?”
“What?! There was another guy?!”
“Yeah, it stole him from our world.”
“Goddammit Talbot, Talc said that would happen!”
“Yeah, sorry about that.” Talbot said, in a tone that didn’t sound very sorry.
“At least it was just once. Talc has your notes, so he’ll keep it from happening again.”
Talbot almost guffawed.
“Goddammit, what am I doing that’s so funny?!”
“No, it’s not you. Well, it
is you, a little, but it’s mostly the fact that I… may’ve doomed humanity anyway.”
Willis was silent, which Talbot regrettably took as a prompt to continue.
“Cause you see,” the scientist slurred, getting more light-headed by the second, “before I tried to ship off the notebook to Johnson, I ripped out the most important parts and sent ‘em to Vincent Anderson, my boss.”
Willis remained silent.
“So, you know. Hopefully someone publishes that in a journal somewhere so that people can actually remember me.”
Willis punched him in the face, hard.
Once he recovered, Talbot nodded. Blood ran from his nose. “I deserved that. I’m sorry, I didn’t know that learning how to break reality would allow a Great Old One to start eating people.”
Willis shook his head in disgust. “Talc told you not to. Do you really think your legacy is more important than the survival of our species?”
Talbot didn’t respond. Whether it was because he was speechless or dead was unclear, and didn’t really matter in any case.
Willis turned and limped away.
Two days after Willis and Talbot disappeared to the Fifth Dimension, Talc said goodbye to… himself and Willis-2, and used a Seal of Traversal to return to his native dimension. He reported to his boss that Willis was gone and would not be returning, before going to Talbot’s house and opening the door with the key they’d taken from the scientist.
Talc went into Talbot’s kitchen and fetched a can of tuna and a jar of mayonnaise. He mixed the two together and filled the pet bowl on the counter. Noting that there was some left, he made himself a tuna sandwich and sat next to the bowl.
It took Ozymandius a while to approach Talc, and even longer to warm up to him. However, the cat was curled up against the delicate man, purring like an engine, by the time the sunset rolled around and they both watched it out the large windows at the back of Talbot’s house.
Talc’s phone rang.
“Yello?” Talc said to the unknown caller.
“Hey.”
Talc immediately tensed. The voice was, undeniably, Talbot’s.
“What is this?!? Where are you?!?”
When the Talcs and Willis had reviewed the CCTV footage, they’d realized exactly where Talbot and Willis had ended up, and had naturally concluded that they were dead.
“I honestly don’t know. I was just in the Fifth Dimension with Willis, but now I’m unsure. It’s dark, and my legs don’t hurt anymore.”
“What does that mean?! Are you still alive?! Is Willis still alive?!”
“I don’t think so. I think I’m dying. Already dead?”
“Then how are you talking to me? Are there phones in the fifth dimension?”
“Nah, I can just hear you. My hypotheses are that this is either a feverish hallucination in my dying moments, or that the Fifth Dimension can somehow…” Talbot’s speech sank into bleary muttering, and was unintelligible for several words. “...subsurface conduit.”
“Talbot, you’re delirious. That makes no sense.”
“Good, so it’s the other hypothesis. Just cause I know you won’t actually hear this, take care of my cat.”
Talc moved to speak, but Talbot continued.
“Oh also,” He added, almost as an afterthought, “I sent my notebook to Anderson, so watch out with that.”
“Wait what, excuse me?!”
The line went dead.
Talc heard a thunderous snapping sound. He whirled around to face the window, pressing his face against the glass and staring up at the sky.
A horrific ripping sound filled the air as the very fabric of the Fourth Dimension was rent apart, the sky above Talc yawning wide. The thing’s tendrils emerged from the rift in the atmosphere and descended towards the ground, each one darting around erratically as though tasting the air.
Talc did not know what Talbot, or Anderson, or whoever had done, but he knew that they had forever changed the world around them, and doomed a large portion of the human race.
You haven’t just opened Pandora’s box, you fool, Talc thought bitterly of the foolish chemist,
You’ve blasted it apart with plastic explosives. Talc returned to the couch and cradled Ozymandius. There was little to be done now.
Talc felt almost relieved that his decades-long vigil could finally come to an end.
The Cracks in the world had finally become holes, and through those holes came a flood.

2023.05.29 12:57 maximusaemilius Two aliens visit a very old forest on earth.
"My family has lived in these mountains for more than three thousand years." "How can you be sure of that?” "Because we have records going back two thousand years and then records of my family's tribe before that. For that reason, no one knows these mountains better than I do, and even then, I still don't know everything there is to know. Every time I go out in the woods, I feel something new." Krill glanced over at Sunny.
If he could raise an eyebrow he would have.
Of all the places they could go on their weekend, and she had decided to go on a guided hike. This would be just like something Adam would do.
He thought of all the people he wouldn't have to remind Sunny how dangerous Earth forests were with their trees, and animals, and poisonous plants, and, well, pretty much everything.
"Don't give me that look, Krill. You know if Adam was here, he would take us out to do the same thing, and you needed to quit moping anyway. He's going to be back soon." Krill crossed his arms emphatically,
"I am not moping." "You are too moping, and it's honestly kind of pathetic. You get all cranky when Adam isn't around." ”Fuck you!” ”Why are you so aggressive? Don’t worry, Adam will be fine! Why do you worry so much?” "That's because I worry about his health and safety." "He's a grown man." "He's a man child." ”Awww is momma Krill missing his little Adam?” ”Fuck you too… Also you know I’m right about that.” ”I didn’t say you weren’t.” Krill sighed and turned back to look at their guide who was staring on in mild amusement.
This human had dark tan skin, deep brown eyes and long dark hair pulled back from his face. He wore a green ranger's uniform, but she knew for a fact he was off duty,
"We're ready." He smiled, and motioned them to follow him.
Krill held onto Sunny's shoulder as they followed the human into the woods.
"Aren't we going to take a trail?" "You don't need a trail when you have me." "I definitely think a trail would-…" "Is your mind ever still my alien friend?" Sunny shook her head,
"No, never, not even a little bit." "Well try. I can't show you anything if you don't also listen." "Now that just makes no sense!” Sunny huffed and the ranger sighed,
"There is more in these woods to hear, that there is to see. The wind leaves the animals." They passed over soggy earth and into a meadow filled with bright wildflowers. Krill was about to ask another question, but the ranger held up a hand despite not looking at him,
"Shhh, just listen, to the silence." Krill turned to glower at Sunny, and she smirked at him, but he angrily did as told, focusing away from his eyes and towards his ears. He could hear the wind in the trees, the distant chirp of birds, rustling in the underbrush, their feet as it moved over packed earth.
In the silence there was also a strange rushing. A sort of white noise that you expect to find at the ocean but comes from deep within the mountains.
He watched their new human friend from the corner of his eye as it led them deeper into the mountains. For all Krill knew this creature could be more interested in killing them and eating them.
How did Sunny even know him?
With his usual paranoia, Krill continued to watch as the green clad human lead them through patches of shadow, over rocks and through little mountain gullies. He used no trail, but it seemed as if all of his senses were alive, following something into the forest. He used his hands to trace over rough packed dirt. He scanned his eyes through the underbrush and lifted his head eyes closed allowing little gusts of air to sweep hair about his face.
He listened, and occasionally, Krill thought he saw the human smelling at the air.
And as they went, they were led deeper and deeper into the forest, Krill had to admit that there was something peaceful about it, almost surreal, like being removed from one's own head and being surrounded by the quiet.
A couple of times, he thought he saw the human smiling over his shoulder at him.
They had made it a good hour or two into the woods when they broke into a nearby clearing. Sunny was about to step out with him, but right at the edge of the treeline, she was stopped by the human, who had pulled back into the shadows.
Sunny blinked and looked around.
Krill did as well.
The ranger shook his head.
Krill looked over Sunny's shoulder, but in the clearing, he saw nothing, nothing except for a strangely geometric circle of wildflowers, in the middle of which there was nothing but a barren patch of dirt.
That was strange, there seemed to be nothing growing inside that circle.
"We go around." The man muttered.
"Why?" "Because, we don't want to trespass." "Trespass on what exactly?" Krill found himself whispering.
"Well, the fey, of course!" The human smiled at him, and he wasn't entirely sure if the creature was pulling his leg or not.
"What are the fey?" The human smiled again, slowly motioning him to follow as he led them around the open circle,
"The fey or fairies, are a group of mystical creatures known to make mischief. Most of the time if you trespass on their land, you forfeit your rights as human, and the laws of the fey world become absolute. If you take anything from a fey, you are immediately required to stay with them for the rest of eternity. There are many rules governing the world of the fey, so it is best just to avoid them." Krill snorted,
"Ah yes... fairies." "You laugh, but through all these years as a ranger, I have seen things I cannot explain." "Like what." "Like the time someone went missing in the forest. He was lost on a relatively well traveled hiking trail. We didn't find him for over six months. The search party was called off after those first few weeks. Six months later I am hiking in an unrelated part of the forest forty miles away in the other side of a mountain, and I find this man's decomposing corpse hanging from a forty-foot tall tree, with impact wounds that looked like he had been dropped from a great height. There were no cliffs in the area, and it appeared as if the man had died one month earlier." Krill frowned. The math on that didn't particularly add up.
"Then a year ago we went looking for a missing child. His parents turned around for five seconds and when they turned back, he was gone. I found his body forty feet up a sheer cliff-face, stuffed into a crevice five months later. He had been dead only two hours, and was wearing the same clothes he had been lost in." Sunny's eyes widened and Krill snorted.
He was expected to believe that?
The ranger waved at him.
"Say what you will, but the forest is a dangerous and unusual place if you don't know how to respect her." "Would you say you are superstitious then?" "Very. Look, I can't explain everything in the world, and I have no desire to do so. I see no harm in giving things the respect they deserve even if, later, it turns out I was wrong." The human was not particularly kidding about him being superstitious. More than a few times, he leads them around strange objects or formations. There was at one point, a time when they were heading towards another low gully in the middle of the woods, and all of a sudden, their entire party grew very uneasy.
The woods seemed darker to Krill than they had before.
But he shook it off.
Sunny seemed to be behaving similarly.
But the ranger, he looked downright terrified, grabbed the two of them by the arm and pulled them away quick time, setting them to a low jog in the opposite direction.
Sunny and Krill stared at him in confusion not entirely sure what to make of it.
"What was that all about?” The human just shook his head.
"We were not welcome!" "From what!?” "Does it matter? When you are not welcome somewhere, you do not question it." "What are you worried about, angering the wendigo?" It was at that moment that Krill was pretty sure he had made a huge mistake, as the human maniacally sprinted at him like a madman, grabbed him and had a hand pressed over his mouth in under a millisecond flat. Even Sunny looked shocked.
"We do NOT joke about those kind of things here!!!" He let Krill go, and Krill stared on in confusion and mild terror.
"I come from a line of people who believe you can attract things to you based off the kind of energy you put off. Now I don't know if it's true or not, but joking about something's existence is bound to piss it off enough to test its patience don’t you think?" He took a deep breath and adjusted his shirt,
”Now there are a few other things it could have been. It could have been the den of a mountain lion, or a bear. It could have been a subliminal sense of danger, an incorrect smell, or the way the rocks looked. Or it could simply have been us all getting paranoid at once, but whatever it is, I would rather be safe than sorry. Now come on, let's take you back. After your little stunt there with name-naming we better don’t risk anything…" Krill stayed quiet and tried not to joke more about the supernatural things., despite finding it funny and not really believing a word the man said.
Apparently, humans tended to take that sort of thing seriously.
Krill did not, all that supernatural stuff was definitely absolute bullshit.
They heard more stories form the strange ranger, about finding people in places they shouldn't be, staircases in strange places, the sudden loss of time.
"There was one point, when I was doing some training out in the field. We were on top of a mountain, and I went off to go to the bathroom. It was so weird, after I was finished, it was like time seemed to slow down. I got starving, and I was looking around in the forest thinking I might be able to find something to eat. I was so hungry. It was all I could think about, and then suddenly I see one of the other rangers, sort of snaps me out of how hungry I was." He shrugged,
"I raise my hand to him and this guy looks terrified, he runs up to me, and he's going off about where was I and what was I doing, what is going on we have been looking for you. Of course, I am super confused and as what he's on about, and this guy looks at me, and he's all like: dude you have been missing for three days." Krill and Sunny stared at him.
"I know, strange isn't it? To me it almost seemed like hours. But it was three days and almost twenty miles over to the next mountain ridge. I don't remember any of it." "Sounds like a dissociative fugue." "Maybe, whatever I was it was strange." Behind them, the sun was just beginning to fall and the undergrowth was heading towards a deep black.
They could see the parking lot just ahead of them, and it was at that moment, a blood curling shriek echoed up from the trees at their back.
Sunny leaped nearly a foot.
Krill squealed.
The ranger jumped.
The scream came again.
It sounded like a woman's voice in absolute gut-wrenching agony. Like she was being eviscerated from the inside moving out.
The ranger turned back towards the trees his chin down his eyes up,
"Get slowly back to the car, but don't run." "Don't run? Don't run!?" "Yes don't run. It's a mountain lion." He stared hard into the trees,
"It is a mountain lion and if you run it will have no other choice than to chase you. They don't like to attack from the front and running will trigger her hunting instincts. Walk backwards towards the car very slowly and do not take your eyes off the treeline." Off to his side, Krill heard a sharp metallic snik and watched as Sunny's spear suddenly appeared in hand.
Of course, she wasn't worried.
But together they backed towards the truck and got in.
As their headlights turned on, the high beams broke over a body hunched up against the treeline.
Sunny cursed in Drev.
The ranger nodded,
"See? Mountain lion." Krill stared in paralyzed horror at the massive cat, as it stalked back into the trees.
"Going to have to call that in. She is way too close to the trails for comfort, someone is going to get hurt. Hmm weird behavior from her…" As they were driving away, Krill looked back towards the woods, where the mountain lion had gone to.
Glancing over the scenery, he couldn’t see it anymore, only a shadowy shape of a person was standing there…
…
…
Wait a second…
WHAT!?
He did a double take as he thought he saw a tall willowy figure with antlers, standing at the edge of the treeline in almost the same spot as the mountain lion, angrily staring at him with glittering red eyes.
Woah what?
When he looked again it was gone.
He sat back in his seat, eyes straight forward.
He had a greater appreciation for the woods now because, for some reason, on Earth nature is connected to something strange and unexplainable, and whatever it is Krill was not interested in finding out.

2023.05.29 12:53 ggallinsmicropp Antinatalist arguments against efilism.
Hello all! First of all, i do apologize for any grammatical mistakes, as english isn't my native language, and as much as i write and read in it, some obvious mistakes might still be committed.
I would like to point out that i am, myself, an antinatalist, supportive of a misanthropic argument, so i was quite curious about efilism for a while now. After some research, i think i got a hold of it pretty well, but i did find it to be unethical and questionable in some regards. While i fully support general antinatalist positions towards humanity, i can not share it towards all sentient life for reasons outlined below.
One of my main issues is consent. While we can, and should choose to not procreate, and are able to recognize potential subjects inability to consent to exist, an animal simply cannot. Forcing an animal to not procreate violates its consent, obviously (it would choose to otherwise). It is more of a grey area with farm and domesticated animals (who we have, sadly, created ourselves), and that would be up for discussion. I do agree about all Efilists points about suffering, but neglecting consent is regardless an issue that needs to be adressed.
Second issue i see is sentient lives will to live. In fact, even Efilists talk about it a lot (like even turtle argument i heard a lot revolves around all sides will to live). Humans denying life would be an enornmous, deliberate suffering inflicted upon other sentient life, in proportions much large than it is committed by animals towards animals. I see no arguments out of this dillema honestly. Even if we imagine that potential animal suffering is greater than it would be if we press the red end all button, i do believe existing suffering has greater value that suffering that yet to exist (while both are negative).
If any Efilists would adress these two points, i would appreciate it. Thank you.

FYI, this is a story COLLECTION. Lots of standalones technically. So, you can basically start to read at any chapter, no pre-read of the other chapters needed technically (other than maybe getting better descriptions of characters than: Adam Vir=human, Krill=antlike alien, Sunny=tall alien, Conn=telepathic alien). The numbers are (mostly) only for organization of posts and continuity.
OC Written by Charlie Stastarrfallknightrise,
Typed up and then posted here by me.

As a small interlude, here have ONE chapter of what Krill and Sunny where up to when Adam was gone.
Note to self: write more stories what they did in the months Adam was gone later.

"My family has lived in these mountains for more than three thousand years."
"How can you be sure of that?”
"Because we have records going back two thousand years and then records of my family's tribe before that. For that reason, no one knows these mountains better than I do, and even then, I still don't know everything there is to know. Every time I go out in the woods, I feel something new."
Krill glanced over at Sunny.
He's going to be back soon."
Krill crossed his arms emphatically,
"I am not moping."
"You are too moping, and it's honestly kind of pathetic. You get all cranky when Adam isn't around."
”Fuck you!”
”Why are you so aggressive? Don’t worry, Adam will be fine! Why do you worry so much?”
"That's because I worry about his health and safety."
"He's a grown man."
"He's a man child."
”Awww is momma Krill missing his little Adam?”
”Fuck you too… Also you know I’m right about that.”
”I didn’t say you weren’t.”
Krill sighed and turned back to look at their guide who was staring on in mild amusement.
This human had dark tan skin, deep brown eyes and long dark hair pulled back from his face. He wore a green ranger's uniform, but she knew for a fact he was off duty,
"We're ready."
He smiled, and motioned them to follow him.
Krill held onto Sunny's shoulder as they followed the human into the woods.
"Aren't we going to take a trail?"
"You don't need a trail when you have me."
"I definitely think a trail would-…"
"Is your mind ever still my alien friend?"
Sunny shook her head,
"No, never, not even a little bit."
"Well try. I can't show you anything if you don't also listen."
"Now that just makes no sense!”
Sunny huffed and the ranger sighed,
"There is more in these woods to hear, that there is to see. The wind leaves the animals."
They passed over soggy earth and into a meadow filled with bright wildflowers. Krill was about to ask another question, but the ranger held up a hand despite not looking at him,
"Shhh, just listen, to the silence."
Krill turned to glower at Sunny, and she smirked at him, but he angrily did as told, focusing away from his eyes and towards his ears.
"We go around."
The man muttered.
"Why?"
"Because, we don't want to trespass."
"Trespass on what exactly?"
Krill found himself whispering.
"Well, the fey, of course!"
The human smiled at him, and he wasn't entirely sure if the creature was pulling his leg or not.
"What are the fey?"
The human smiled again, slowly motioning him to follow as he led them around the open circle,
"The fey or fairies, are a group of mystical creatures known to make mischief. Most of the time if you trespass on their land, you forfeit your rights as human, and the laws of the fey world become absolute. If you take anything from a fey, you are immediately required to stay with them for the rest of eternity. There are many rules governing the world of the fey, so it is best just to avoid them."
Krill snorted,
"Ah yes... fairies."
"You laugh, but through all these years as a ranger, I have seen things I cannot explain."
"Like what."
"Like the time someone went missing in the forest. There were no cliffs in the area, and it appeared as if the man had died one month earlier."
Krill frowned. The math on that didn't particularly add up.
"Then a year ago we went looking for a missing child. His parents turned around for five seconds and when they turned back, he was gone. I found his body forty feet up a sheer cliff-face, stuffed into a crevice five months later. He had been dead only two hours, and was wearing the same clothes he had been lost in."
Sunny's eyes widened and Krill snorted.
He was expected to believe that?
The ranger waved at him.
"Say what you will, but the forest is a dangerous and unusual place if you don't know how to respect her."
"Would you say you are superstitious then?"
"Very. Look, I can't explain everything in the world, and I have no desire to do so. I see no harm in giving things the respect they deserve even if, later, it turns out I was wrong."
The human was not particularly kidding about him being superstitious.
"What was that all about?”
The human just shook his head.
"We were not welcome!"
"From what!?”
"Does it matter? When you are not welcome somewhere, you do not question it."
"What are you worried about, angering the wendigo?"
It was at that moment that Krill was pretty sure he had made a huge mistake, as the human maniacally sprinted at him like a madman, grabbed him and had a hand pressed over his mouth in under a millisecond flat. Even Sunny looked shocked.
"We do NOT joke about those kind of things here!!!"
He let Krill go, and Krill stared on in confusion and mild terror.
"I come from a line of people who believe you can attract things to you based off the kind of energy you put off. Now I don't know if it's true or not, but joking about something's existence is bound to piss it off enough to test its patience don’t you think?"
He took a deep breath and adjusted his shirt,
”Now there are a few other things it could have been. After your little stunt there with name-naming we better don’t risk anything…"
Krill stayed quiet and tried not to joke more about the supernatural things., despite finding it funny and not really believing a word the man said.
It was all I could think about, and then suddenly I see one of the other rangers, sort of snaps me out of how hungry I was."
He shrugged,
"I raise my hand to him and this guy looks terrified, he runs up to me, and he's going off about where was I and what was I doing, what is going on we have been looking for you. Of course, I am super confused and as what he's on about, and this guy looks at me, and he's all like: dude you have been missing for three days."
Krill and Sunny stared at him.
"I know, strange isn't it? To me it almost seemed like hours. But it was three days and almost twenty miles over to the next mountain ridge. I don't remember any of it."
"Sounds like a dissociative fugue."
"Maybe, whatever I was it was strange."
Behind them, the sun was just beginning to fall and the undergrowth was heading towards a deep black.
The ranger turned back towards the trees his chin down his eyes up,
"Get slowly back to the car, but don't run."
"Don't run? Don't run!?"
"Yes don't run. It's a mountain lion."
He stared hard into the trees,
"It is a mountain lion and if you run it will have no other choice than to chase you. They don't like to attack from the front and running will trigger her hunting instincts. Walk backwards towards the car very slowly and do not take your eyes off the treeline."

Thanks for reading! As you saw in the title, this is a cross posted story written by starrfallknightrise and I'll just upload some of it here for you guys, if you are interested and want to read ahead, the original story-collection can be found on tumblr or wattpad to read for free. (link above this text under "OC:..." ) It is the Empyrean Iris story collection by starfallknightrise. Also, if you want to know more about the story collection i made an intro post about it, so feel free to check that out to see what other great characters to look forward to! (Link also above this text). I have no affiliations to the author; just thought I’d share some of the great stories you might enjoy a lot!
Obviously, I have Charlie’s permission to post this and for the people already knowing the stories, or starting to read them: If you follow the link and check out the story you will see some differences. I made some small (non-artistic) changes, mainly correcting writing mistakes, pronoun correction and some small additional info here and there of things which were not thought of/forgotten or even were added/changed in later stories (like the “USS->UNSC” prefix of Stabby, Chalar=/->Sunny etc). As well as some "biggemajor" changes in descriptions and info’s for the same stringency/continuity reason. That can be explained by the story collection being, well a story collection at the start with many standalone-stories just starring the same people, but later on it gets more to a stringent storyline with backstories and throwbacks. (For example Adam Vir has some HEAVY scars over his body, following his bones, which were not really talked about up till half the collection, where it says it covers his whole body and you find out via backflash that he had them the whole time and how he got them, they just weren't mentioned before. However, I would think a doctor would at least see these scars before that, especially since he gets analyzed, treated and goes shirtless/in T-shirts in some stories). So TLDR: Writing and some descriptions are slightly changed, with full OK from the author, since he himself did not bother to correct these things before.

2023.05.29 12:47 nexgitspvtltd The Future of Artificial Intelligence: Trends and Predictions
| Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live, work, and interact with the world around us. In recent years, we have seen incredible advances in AI technology. Today, the global AI market is valued at over $136 billion . But what does the future hold for AI? In this blog post, we'll explore some of the key trends and predictions for the future of artificial intelligence. Trend 1: Natural Language Processing (NLP) One of the most exciting trends in AI is the continued development of natural language processing . NLP refers to the ability of machines to understand, interpret, and generate human language. With advances in NLP, we can expect to see more sophisticated chatbots and virtual assistants that are able to understand and respond to natural language queries with greater accuracy. One application of NLP that has already made significant strides is sentiment analysis. Sentiment analysis involves analyzing large volumes of text to determine the overall sentiment or tone. This can be used to gauge public opinion about a particular product, brand, or issue. As NLP technology continues to improve, we can expect to see even more advanced sentiment analysis tools that are able to identify complex emotions and nuances in language accurately. Another area where NLP is making significant progress is in the development of conversational agents. These virtual assistants can engage in complex, human-like conversations with users. Companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are all investing heavily in this technology, and we can expect to see more and more sophisticated conversational agents in the coming years. https://preview.redd.it/7j9lzbgpjs2b1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f96af90821b64f2bb55276996d13e63748cabf4 Trend 2: Machine Learning Another trend shaping AI's future is the continued development of machine learning. Machine learning refers to the ability of machines to learn from data and improve their performance over time. This has already led to major breakthroughs such as image and speech recognition. We can expect to see even more machine-learning applications in the years to come. One area where machine learning already has a significant impact on healthcare. Machine learning algorithms are used to analyze medical data and predict patient outcomes. This has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, allowing doctors to make more accurate diagnoses and develop more effective treatment plans. Another application of machine learning that is expected to grow in the coming years is in the development of autonomous vehicles. Machine learning algorithms can be used to analyze data from sensors and cameras to help self-driving cars navigate the road safely and efficiently. As technology continues to improve, we can expect to see more autonomous vehicles on the streets. Trend 3: Ethics and Regulation As AI technology continues to advance, it is vital to consider the ethical and regulatory implications. There are concerns about the potential misuse of AI, particularly in areas such as surveillance and military applications. Governments and industry leaders need to work together to develop ethical guidelines and regulations to ensure that AI is used responsibly and for the benefit of society as a whole. One of the key ethical considerations in AI is the potential for bias. Machine learning algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on, and if that data is biased, it can lead to subjective outcomes. There have already been several high-profile cases of AI bias, such as the use of facial recognition technology that was found to be less accurate for people with darker skin tones. Developers need to be aware of these issues and take steps to mitigate bias in their algorithms. Another ethical consideration in AI is the potential for job displacement. As AI technology becomes more advanced, there is a risk that it could lead to job losses in certain industries. Governments and industry leaders need to work together to develop strategies to mitigate the impact of job displacement and ensure that workers are equipped with the skills they need to thrive in the new economy. Trend 4: Human-AI Collaboration Finally, human-AI collaboration is another trend that is expected to shape the future of AI. The best results are achieved in many applications when humans and AI work together. One area where human-AI collaboration is critical is in creative applications such as art and music. While AI is capable of generating its own works of art and music, the results are often formulaic and lacking in emotion. AI can learn from human creativity and intuition by working with humans and producing more exciting and engaging works. Human-AI collaboration is also important in applications such as healthcare, where the best outcomes are achieved when doctors and AI systems work together. AI can help doctors to analyze large amounts of medical data and identify patterns that would be difficult for humans to detect on their own. By working together, doctors and AI systems can provide more accurate diagnoses and develop more effective treatment plans. Trend 5: AI-Driven Customer Service With the rise of chatbots and virtual assistants, AI is poised to play an increasingly important role in customer service. AI-powered chatbots can help automate routine tasks and provide personalized support to customers while freeing up human agents to focus on more complex issues. What are Some of the Future Predictions for AI? 1. AI Will Continue to Transform the Workplace AI technology is already being used to automate routine tasks, optimize operations, and improve productivity in many industries. As AI technology continues to evolve and become more sophisticated, we can expect to see even more jobs being transformed by AI. This may lead to job displacement in some industries, but it will also create new opportunities for workers with skills in AI development and implementation. 2. AI Will Become More Personalized AI will better understand individual preferences and needs as it becomes more sophisticated. This will enable personalized recommendations, services, and products tailored to individual users. For example, AI-powered healthcare systems may use patient data to personalize treatment plans, while AI-powered shopping platforms may use customer data to offer personalized product recommendations. 3. Ethical and Regulatory Concerns As AI becomes more pervasive, it will continue to raise ethical and regulatory concerns. For example, there are concerns about AI bias and fairness, as well as concerns about AI's impact on privacy and security. It will be necessary for governments, industry leaders, and developers to work together to address these concerns and ensure that AI is being used ethically and responsibly. 4. Improvement in Software Development Processes According to a report from Gartner, by 2024, 65% of application development activity will be done using low-code application development platforms, which often incorporate AI and machine learning. These platforms allow developers to build and deploy applications more quickly and efficiently, with AI providing intelligent recommendations and automating repetitive tasks. In addition, AI can help with testing and debugging, improving the quality and reliability of software applications. As a result, we can expect to see more AI-powered software development tools and platforms in the coming years, making it easier and faster to build and deploy new software applications. Conclusion The future of AI is exciting and full of potential. With continued advances in natural language processing, machine learning, edge computing, explainable AI, and human-AI collaboration, we can expect AI to be used in new and innovative ways to solve some of the world's most pressing challenges. However, governments, industry leaders, and developers need to consider AI's ethical and regulatory implications and work together to ensure that AI is being used for the benefit of society as a whole. Also, the predictions, as mentioned earlier, offer a glimpse into what the future of AI might look like. However, seeing how AI technology transforms the world around us will be exciting as it advances and evolves. 2023.05.29 12:45 umadbruv478 My (20M) GF's (20F) best friend manipulated my friend group to break us up, and they're still friends
This is going to be REALLY long so please bear with me. Before I begin about the manipulation I need to give context about GF and I. We’ve been together for almost 1 year and 6 months, are both introverted, have very different friends, and go to the same college.
I’m a pretty introverted gamer on my college’s esports team and I usually like to stay in the comfort of my room. It’s my personal space and my comfort zone, so I rarely like to leave. My housemate and I are upperclassmen compared to the rest of our friend group so get-togethers and parties are always hosted by us.
My GF is sweet, caring, and insanely smart but she has a hard time making friendships that last. Her housemates basically abandoned her last year and didn’t tell her they excluded her from their group until the last day of housing selection, so she had to scramble to find a new housemate. She’s still friends with those housemates, and I think some of them were pretty dismissive of her and treated her badly when they lived together. She says they aren’t like that, but that’s my impression.
Emily, my GF’s new housemate, quickly became best friends with her once they started living together last Fall. Prior to this my GF was warned by her summer program roommate that Emily is a serial liar and not to trust her. That may not be exactly what she said but that’s the gist of it.
Our relationship has been a bit rocky over the past school year. I didn’t come over to her house nearly as much as I used to, and there was a general lack of effort on my part. Because of this Emily pretty much never had a chance to get to know me, and my GF would complain to her about our relationship issues. My GF discussed our issues with her friends and the consensus was that we needed to talk, and Emily even said that I was “toxic and abusive.” That was in February and our relationship got better, I started trying a little harder and went over once or twice. However, every single time I would interact with Emily she’d make a comment about me being a shitty boyfriend. If my GF and I had any banter she’d go “omg you guys are so toxic!” Or if the two of them were sitting outside she’d say “Come hang out with us! Be an actual boyfriend!” If my GF didn’t come over to my house, then she was 100% hanging out with Emily; and each time I would go out of my comfort zone to spend time with my GF I would be met with Emily’s passive-aggressive comments. So I just wouldn’t go over to her house. I hated being around her just waiting to hear what new insult she could come up with.
Emily and my GF were also in a senior capping group together. They needed to rent an AirBnB and my GF took the responsibility of renting it. The morning that they needed to check out my GF was freaking out because it was 1:30am, the AirBnB was 40 minutes away and an Uber this late didn’t sound very safe. Emily had a car, but she didn’t want to drive my GF because she was exhausted. My GF called my hysterical crying so I ran over to comfort her. A few minutes after I got there Emily cancels the Uber and tells my GF that she’ll drive GF to the AirBnB, that she isn’t mad, loves GF and she just wants GF to be safe. Once they get there Emily tells my GF it’s super unfair to make her drive so far this late, that she’s a bad friend and that she shouldn’t do this to her. I was in shock and told my GF that is textbook manipulation, which she agreed and thinks Emily can be over the top sometimes.
Fast forward to the last few weeks of classes, my housemate and I have one last get-together to get rid of all our alcohol before the year ends. My GF asked if she could bring Emily, because Emily was going through some things and needed a pick-me-up. I of course said yes, not wanting her to hate me even more, and they arrived shortly after.
Before everyone came over I was playing video games with a very antisocial friend. He’s on the team with me and despite inviting him to social events he never attends when there’s too many people. I didn’t want to abandon him when our friends came over so I decided to play one more match (30-40 mins) and then join the party. My GF was pretty annoyed, and everyone at the party joked about me being a typical introverted gamer not socializing. Emily was apparently really pressed and kept complaining about it, and how she wouldn’t tolerate that.
A few hours after the party dies down my GF, Emily, a few friends and I are all in my room chatting. Emily left the room for a few minutes and then came back to sit on the bed with my GF and I. After she came back everyone who wasn’t inside my room left. A few minutes pass and Emily begins texting my GF. I glanced over to read what she was saying on my GF’s phone and it read “Dude. We need to talk.” I stopped reading and then Emily shot up and made some excuse that she had an assignment to do and left. My GF continued receiving texts after Emily left and was visibly upset. GF texts me saying she needs to talk to me alone, and I asked my two other friends to leave so we could talk. My GF showed me the texts and Emily said that everyone not in my room was talking serious shit about me and GF, that I’m a horrible person and I always treat her like shit. I had one experience in HS where fake friends bad-mouthed me behind my back and I was really hurt, so experiencing it again made me extremely mad. The way the texts were phrased I thought they were talking shit about my GF and I, but in reality it was just me. Emily said that most of the shit talk was from the only other girl in the group, and that everyone in the room agreed with her. I immediately sent a text to the other girl, telling her it’s not okay in the slightest to do that and banned her from my house.
The next morning the other girl texted me back saying she had no clue what I was talking about and wanted to know more. I didn’t text her back because I wanted to get the full picture before I said anything else. My GF talked to Emily and she basically did a retelling of how I’m “toxic and abusive” and that she needs to break up with me. They talked for an hour and my GF said it was really bad. Emily’s points were based in truth (I never come over to their house, lack of effort, etc.) but she twisted them so much to describe me as abusive.
Later that night I had two of the people who were in the other room come over to tell me and my GF what happened. They explained that none of what Emily said ever happened and she kept trying to engage in conversation when everyone was tired, and that she couldn’t take a hint. The whole time my GF was texting Emily back and forth, and she found out GF was at my place. Emily started attacking my GF over text, threatening to text me and tell me how horrible I am, and to even come over and say it to my face or do who knows what. Emily said “you’re ruining all your friendships over a fucking GUY.” Emily sent paragraph after paragraph and my GF was in tears. My GF decided to go back home and talk to Emily in person because she cares for Emily a lot, they’re best friends and all. GF left and didn’t text me for hours. I got worried about her safety since Emily was so hostile over text that I had one of my friends Johnathan text her, to which she responded that she was okay. Johnathan and my GF came over so we could all talk and he gave his perspective on the matter which seemed to ease her mind.
My GF and I have talked this over many times, and she’s told me that she made her choice to stay together but that she’s still going to stay friends with Emily. I have expressed to my GF my feelings on how psychotic it is that Emily would lie about all of my friends saying I’m a horrible person, which my GF has acknowledged. However, she still talks to Emily and plans to let the friendship fade as time goes on, and Emily is still invited to her grad party in June where I’m gonna have to see her.
I have told my GF how much Emily bothers me countless times, that I’ve never done anything to this girl and just want to be left alone, but it really stings that my GF is still friends with her. Last week my GF told me the things Emily said still gave her doubts about us, and I explained that I did not want to be in a relationship where she is constantly questioning me because of someone so manipulative. I’m having a hard time wording it correctly, but this whole thing has put a huge strain on our relationship and I constantly feel hurt each time she brings up Emily. I don’t know how to proceed with our relationship. Is our relationship not worth it anymore? Are my feelings valid? Am I not taking her needs into consideration with mine?
TL;DR - My GF’s best friend lied and told her that my entire friend group said I treat her horribly and that I’m a piece of shit, but my GF is still friends with her and still has doubts about our relationship based on those lies.

2023.05.29 12:43 Key-Ad-8400 A feature i thinknis missing from MP3
Firslty it's boring that you can't use grenades or molotovs, but i can understand and live wothout it. But one feature i think should have been in Max Payne 3 is being able to throw back grenades (not ones from grenade launchers obviously). It would fit and i've been in several situations where i'm cornered with a grenade in front of me. Doesn't have to be a super advanced mechanic, it can be like in Call of duty where the character just throws it the way you're facing when pressing "throw back".
Edit: Sorry, I misspelled the title
