Recommendations for compact, long term travel toiletries?
2023.05.29 01:42 Lucidandpretty Recommendations for compact, long term travel toiletries?
I’m going to be traveling for two years and I’m looking for toiletry items that are small and compact that last a long time. I’ve switched to a shampoo bar for example and powdered dry shampoo for the best space/longevity ratio. I need recommendations for a women’s shaving cream, an alternative to carrying a ton of razor heads and a more compact type of body lotion maybe a moisturizing lotion bar of some kind or maybe some kind of moisturizing body oil? Any alternatives to a bottle of makeup brush cleaner? Does anyone use those bite toothpaste tablets? Does it save room? Let me know and thanks!

2023.05.29 01:20 silly_flying_dolphin CND UK Depleted Uranium: the last thing Ukrainians need
https://cnduk.org/depleted-uranium-the-last-thing-ukrainians-need/ - March 30, 2023
In a shocking development, the government has announced it will be sending depleted uranium (DU) rounds to Ukraine along with Challenger 2 tanks. As we know from several wars in the past few decades, the health consequences for Ukrainian civilians will be high. DU is a chemically toxic and radioactive heavy metal and it’s a by-product of the enrichment process used to make reactor-grade uranium. Its chemical and physical properties have made it popular for a range of military and commercial uses: its density and its ability to self-sharpen attracted the attention of the US Department of Defense (DoD) in the late 1950s. The military was looking to increase the armour piercing capacity of munitions and to strengthen the armour of tanks. DU seemed to fit the bill. But its use has had a devastating impact on the populations caught up in numerous conflicts, with the terrible type of health consequences that we associate with radiation impacts.
DU is used for armour piercing tank rounds and bullets as it is so heavy, meaning it can easily penetrate steel. Because of its heaviness, DU has also been used as ballast in aeroplanes, notably in hundreds of Boeing 747s – the early jumbo jets – that were built before 1981. The practice became particularly controversial after an El Al cargo jet crashed into an apartment block in Amsterdam in 1992. 43 people were killed and the cargo, which included 10 tons of chemicals, as well as flammable liquids, gases, and caustic substances burst into flames, along with hundreds of kilos of DU carried as weighting. Although local residents were assured that no health risk was posed, it was apparent that much of the DU had been released as dust particles into the atmosphere.
The risk is not that DU munitions will cause a nuclear explosion. It’s that the impact of their use causes toxic or radioactive dust to be released and if this is subsequently inhaled or ingested in other ways, it has very significant negative health consequences. After the first Gulf War the DoD Office of the Special Assistant for Gulf War Illnesses (OSAGWI) identified a number of DU exposure scenarios including through wounds caused by DU fragments, inhalation of airborne DU particles, ingestion of DU residues, or wound contamination by DU residues.
DU munitions were used on a large scale by the US and UK in the Gulf War in 1991 and in Iraq in 2003. Their use has caused a sharp increase in the incidence rates of some cancers, such as breast cancer and lymphoma, in the areas where it has been used. It has also been implicated in a rise in birth defects from areas adjacent to the main Gulf War battlefields. Other health problems associated with DU include kidney failure, nervous system disorders, lung disease and reproductive problems. A report funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2013 showed that more than 400 tonnes of DU ammunition were estimated to have been used in 1991 and 2003, the vast majority by US forces. The report showed that the Iraqi government’s Radiation Protection Centre had identified between 300 and 365 contaminated sites by 2006, mostly in the Basra region in southern Iraq. As well as warning of contamination being spread by poorly regulated scrap metal dealers, including children, it also shared evidence that DU munitions were fired at light vehicles, buildings and other civilian infrastructure including the Iraqi Ministry of Planning in Baghdad – in spite of official assurances of military-only armoured targets.
Its use in the former Yugoslavia by NATO forces in 1995 and 1999 led to the same type of consequences. It was also used by the US in Syria in 2015. The impacts have not been confined to local populations – they have also affected the troops involved in or close to their use, and also military clean-up teams sent to deal with the impact of the DU. The severe health consequences have led to the terms ‘Gulf War syndrome’ and ‘Balkan syndrome’ entering our vocabulary. The Ministry of Defence disputes the risks of DU, yet it recommends ‘ongoing surveillance’ for veterans with embedded DU fragments.
No treaty explicitly banning the use of DU is yet in force, but it is clear that its use runs counter to the basic rules and principles of International Humanitarian Law. In 2006, the European Parliament strengthened its previous calls for a moratorium by calling for an introduction of a total ban, classifying the use of DU, along with white phosphorus, as inhumane. Since 2007, repeated UN General Assembly resolutions have highlighted serious concerns over the use of DU weapons. The UK, together with the US, France and Israel are the only states that have consistently voted against the resolutions.
The British government must put an immediate end to its use of DU – inflicting it on the people of Ukraine is the last thing they need.

2023.05.29 01:16 Ok_World_8819 I wish we could've seen the OS side characters again (like Ritchie, Casey, Duplica, etc).
I was discussing on DMs with someone about obscure Pokemon side characters from the OS, such as Ritchie, Casey, Todd Snap, Tracey Sketchit, Sakura, Harrison, Duplica, etc. One thing i'll never understand, no matter what, is why we never saw more of them. Of the seven characters mentioned, the only three that came back at all were Tracey, Todd and Ritchie. And Ritchie merely had one very brief cameo and that's it. Todd appeared in New Snap but only as a small cameo in the Masters 8 (and is pretty easy to miss honestly). Tracey mostly only had cameos with his only speaking appearance being in MPM, in the final episode with Ash ever.
We could've had another Chronicles-type series where we see these old characters and newer side characters again, we could've seen Casey with an Electabuzz or other newer gen Pokemon, or see how Ritchie is doing since we last saw him.
It's a shame because I love all of those characters. Casey is definitely my favorite and it's depressing how we'll never see her again. I was a huge fan of Ritchie as a kid. Todd Snap is chill too, and i'm glad we saw him again in the new game.
Unfortunately though, they're all obscure to most people, if not on the same level of it. Some are even obscure to most Pokemon fans too, like Casey or Sakura.
Tracey Sketchit, Todd Snap and Ritchie were well-known during the 2000s but outside of the fanbase, they're mostly forgotten today - though Todd is probably less obscure for being in New Snap. They're kind of relics of that era in the same way other popular things from then - such as cartoons like Camp Lazlo or Dragon Tales, or movies like the 2003 Freaky Friday or Disney's Bolt - are mostly forgotten today. Even their character designs sort of feel Y2K, especially Ritchie.
I am confident that even most Pokemon fans have literally never heard of Casey in their entire life.
Sakura, Duplica and Harrison are borderline CoTDs. They had less than five speaking appearances in the entire anime, and I bet most of the few Pokemon fans that do recognize them have mistaken them for only being in one episode.
Other than Misty, Brock and Gary, the only other OS anime-exclusive characters that are still fairly well known are Officer Jenny, Nurse Joy, and maybe Cassidy and Butch.
The last two are a maybe because they came back last year in Journeys and were very popular in the 2000s but from what i've heard the episode kind of shafted them and they also had a 14 year absence in appearances.
Professor Oak is obviously iconic but he's a game character so obviously he'd be well-remembered by almost everyone.
And if you were to ask the average person that watched Pokemon growing up, they probably wouldn't recognize any of the other OS side characters except for Gary Oak. They just don't appear very much if at all anymore.
It's kind of odd how they just... never acknowledged most of them again. Like, not in cameos or references, never. They were completely erased from the memory of the writers (except Casey, because they clearly acknowledged the Electabuzz baseball team in S&M! She also got a small cameo which I mention below).
The amount of wasted opportunities to bring back Casey in particular is baffling. The SM baseball episode, Journeys, the Masters 8 as a cameo, the last few episodes with Ash... didn't appear in any of them. Her only cameo was in a short film called A Ripple In Time, which has Ash in the OS art style, and in the cameo she looks like a wet fart (dots for eyes and generally uncanny). Misty, Brock, Gary and Ritchie also cameo in the same shot but look decent/have normal eyes. It's just been so long since she last showed up (last speaking appearance was in 2004) that i'm certain she will never come back ever again, not even as a cameo, let alone a speaking role. Same with most of the others who also probably won't even get cameos.
A shame because the OS side characters are so much more memorable than most of the newer ones IMO. Especially their designs - Duplica's, Ritchie's, Todd's and Casey's in particular. Something about their character designs, the colors of their clothes... they just stand out. I don't really find the designs of the newer side characters to be that noteworthy or exciting except maybe Mairin who i've always liked a lot.
I just wish we could've seen them one last time, but we'll never get the opportunity again. They'll be doomed to obscurity for all eternity and it's so sad.

I have a 2015 Toyota Highlander AWD with about 70,000 miles. So far all I’ve done is regular oil changes (plus tires and brakes). It’s eight years old now and I plan on keeping it another four years. What maintenance should I be looking at doing at this point to make that happen? I’ve never towed with it and probably never will. I would guess half those mikes were interstate and half city.

2023.05.29 00:45 StageNinja21 CV boot replacement, 1992 Camry LE
| Hi all, I have a 1992 Camry LE 4cyl, with a torn front outer CV boot. The tear itself isn't terrible, no grease seems to have come out or anything, and there's no clicking or other strange noises from the joint. I'm not a mechanic and this is my first car I've done work on other than oil changes and brakes (I had help with that job, incidentally that was 2010 Camry lol), but I have a repair manual and a budget that 'encourages' me to do as much work at home as I can, so I'm going to give this a shot. Anyone here done this swap before, and/or have any tips? The picture above is what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-614-700-Drying-Adhesive-Select/dp/B07HQYVFH8/ref=mp_s_a_1_15?crid=14TZEW1MQNPS4&keywords=1992+Camry+LE+cv+boot&qid=1685312426&replacementKeywords=le+cv+boot&sprefix=1992+camry+le+cv+boot%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-15&vehicle=1992-76-1011------------&vehicleName=1992+Toyota+Camry I've heard that the boot clamps that come with the kit aren't the strongest, is there something out there that'll hold better and last longer, or some kind of adhesive or sealant that would strengthen the joint more? I want to make sure I do this right, so any tips or help would be greatly appreciated! submitted by StageNinja21 to MechanicAdvice [link] [comments] |

2023.05.28 23:21 OtherTon Are interest rates in the US going to skyrocket with the looming default crisis? How do leases work with Toyota?
I have a Corolla that I ordered that will be available around 6/20/23. I am worried that the interest rates are going to skyrocket compared to the current 2.9% being offered. Also, if I were to lease the car, what happens after the lease ends? Do you have a guaranteed right to buy the car? What is the financing like? I’ve asked my dealer this but they’ve said it’s really up to Southeastern Toyota Financing, and they don’t know what the deals will be next month.

Microplastics, climate denial,
contagious skin fungus, warlords, record temperatures, and wheat troubles. This is starting to get serious.
Last Week in Collapse: May 21-27, 2023 This is
Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter bringing together some of the most important, timely, useful, depressing, ironic, amazing, or otherwise must-see moments in Collapse.
This is the 73rd newsletter. Sorry it’s a bit later than usual. You can find the May 14-20 edition
here if you missed it last week. These newsletters are also
on Substack if you want them sent to your email inbox every Sunday.

Climate and soil scientists
are warning that Europe’s soil won’t be able to absorb as much water now, after a season of terrible drought. The
feedback loops spell disaster for the continent’s ability to weather the coming drought. France
has given up aiming for just a 1.5 °C temperature increase, and are
preparing for 4 °C rise by 2100. Scientists claim
we are heading for total disaster, but the rest of the world apparently has bigger problems.
The world is allegedly
on track for 2.7 °C of warming, and some experts predict that about
one billion humans may be forced to migrate as a result of global warming, sea level rise, etc. Iraq is
one such location, and countless migrants have already fled. On Twitter, climate scientists
report seeing more hostility and
climate denial.
Category 5 Typhoon Mawar
blasted Guam, and took out electricity, but no humans were killed on the island. In Somalia,
over one million people were displaced by drought within the last 4 months.
A ship’s
draft/draught) is the distance between its waterline and the bottom of its keel/hull. This determines a ship’s displacement; the heavier a ship’s cargo, the greater its draft will be. The Panama Canal
is reducing the allowed vessel draft because they didn’t receive enough rain in the last few months and cannot fully fill the Canal’s locks. As a result, more ships will be forced to make the long journey around
Cape Horn—or load up with less cargo to transit the Canal. The
supply chain feedback loops are compounding.
Chad saw its
highest May temperature last week—47 °C (117 °F), and part of Samoa tied
a new May temperature too—34.8 °C (101 °F) . New record temperatures
in Southeast Asia again. The ocean around the Cayman Islands
has hit 30 °C earlier than any previous year. The average sea surface temperature
has been breaking daily records for every day for over two months.
Experts are warning that
a heat wave would devastate Phoenix, Arizona, if it knocked out the power grid. Up to 800,000 people (half the population) would allegedly require emergency medical attention for heat stroke, etc. The
study concluded that about 12,800 people would die as a result.
Although most of the world is warming,
the upper atmosphere is cooling down, forcing scientists and generals to consider its potential impact on satellites and on our sensitive weather patterns. Temperatures beyond roughly 50km out in the atmosphere have been cooled by CO2 levels. Concrete implications from
the study are unclear.
About
5,000 Congolese are still missing weeks after catastrophic flooding. Wildfire risk is
increasing in Sweden. Heat wave
alerts in Sri Lanka.
A
study has claimed—again—that
species are going extinct even faster than expected. About half of surveyed
species have seen population declines recently (especially in the tropics), while 49% are holding relatively steady.
One species at risk of dieoff is the
black sea urchin off the coast of Israel—and their dieoff hold grim implications for the health of coral in the Red Sea.
Tick season has begun, and researchers are worried that
they can transfer prions from white-tailed deer to humans.
Chronic wasting disease has not yet afflicted humans, though it exists
in growing quantities among Canadian cervids.
——————————
The
danger from fungi is growing as a result of climate change, and the rise of Candida Auris—and a
resistant, contagious skin fungus coming
out of India—in the U.S. is alarming epidemiologists. The combination of compromised immune systems (from COVID, increased diabetes), climate change, distrust of health entities, health insurance problems, and healthcare worker collapse are creating a
terrible convergence of circumstances.
Over
5,000 new species have been discovered in the ocean between Hawai’i and Mexico—and in two months, applications will be accepted to begin
deep-sea mining extraction operations in the region. Meanwhile,
Shell shareholders rejected attempts to accept new emissions targets, 80% to 20%.
German police are looking into
classifying “Last Generation” climate activists as part of a criminal group, amid raids targeting the traffic-stopping activists.
Greenpeace claims that
recycled plastic can be more toxic than first-use plastic—but don’t worry, only
9% of plastic is recycled worldwide. A
study from
Hazardous Materials Advances concluded that
recycling plastics produces large amounts of microplastics which later contaminate our land, water, and even air.
The U.S. Supreme Court
limited the scope of the Clean Water Act, to exclude certain types of wetlands. This
opens up some wetlands to nearby development and pollution.
Some Kansas wheat farmers suffered so much drought and cold snaps that
they are abandoning their crops. Across the country, one third of winter-wheat acres are being abandoned, the highest percent in over 100 years. Utah’s Great Salt Lake is drying up, and
strong winds are blowing dust, sometimes containing heavy metals.
Locusts in Afghanistan
are threatening the coming wheat harvests in an already famine-stricken land. Argentina
will face a similar problem if they don’t get rain within a few weeks.
——————————
South Africa is suffering from 33% unemployment and devastating,
10-hour load-shedding (routine power outages) every day. A senior politician is
warning that the crumbling nation could become a failed state soon. Power grid troubles are expected to escalate later this winter, by August.
A teenage girl in Guyana
set fire to her dorm and unintentionally killed 19 people—because her cell phone was confiscated. What will society do when their water and human rights are confiscated?
Russia is supposedly
considering an export ban on gasoline, in an attempt to better control supply & prices within its own territory. Qatar
warned Europe that they haven’t seen the worst of the petrol/energy crisis yet.
Global demand for goods is reportedly
sinking, and the production of shipping containers is down. More and more
Americans are struggling to pay bills as
inflation rises. Germany is
officially in recession now. South Africa’s
interest rates are at a 14-year high.
Some experts are concerned that
China may overtake the U.S. with AI development. Others are concerned about the implications of an AI future dominated by the United States. Experts
are calling for regulation of AI before it destroys humans.
Cambodia’s ruling party
is keeping the opposition party off the ballots in this July’s elections.
The ceasefire in Khartoum
is largely holding, but
sporadic violence by fighters threatens the fragile “peace” in the city. Once a War “begins,” what role do the civilians have in re-instituting peace—or keeping the conflict going?
The head of the Wagner Group is
warning of revolution in Russia, a portent that may also be a threat. The mercenary group
is currently handing over Bakhmut to the Russian Army, and claims that about
20,000 Wagner soldiers died taking the city. Meanwhile, a pro-Ukrainian group of ethnic-Russian soldiers
made attacks inside Russian territory, and soon withdrew back into Ukraine.
Russia’s former President and PM
claimed that this
War could last for decades. Yet certain unspecified NATO member states
will give F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, and train about 20 Ukrainian pilots, in an effort to force an earlier conclusion. Yet their impact
may not be decisive on the battlefield.
Seven U.S. states agreed on
a three-year water-sharing compromise over the Colorado River’s water; whether the pact will hold when the Dust Bowl 2.0 begins is up in the air. Meanwhile, troops from
Afghanistan and Iran exchanged machine gun fire and some mortars, over water rights in the Helmand River.

Things to watch for next week include: ↠ It’s that time of the year again. American politicians
posture over raising the debt ceiling, a massive political/economic struggle that usually ends with a last-minute compromise or a short government shutdown. The U.S. is set to default on its debt on June 1st, which would damage trust and cause market bedlam. What’s it gonna be this time?
↠ Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, is rapidly running out of water. The city’s main reservoir only had
10 days left of water—5 days ago. So the city’s supply is set to be exhausted by next Friday. How will the government react—and what will the people do? This might be a signal of what lies ahead for the rest of us.
Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest: -
China will be getting 65M COVID cases—every week—if you believe the claims made in
this thread and its sources, which include the Chinese government. The world’s second-most-populous nation, once the last bastion against COVID, has resigned to letting rolling waves of coronavirus repeatedly infect the masses. So it goes.
-Some rich countries will fare very poorly in Collapse, judging by the comments on
this thread. Do you see your nation among them?
-Climate change may be worse than you think, says
a thread and its comments. Even some doomers will be taken aback by the speed and scale of the damage ahead. What are you doing to prepare?

2023.05.28 23:05 cclloene23 Totaled or not after being T-boned?
| I was T-boned in an intersection by a car that ran a red. I was able to drive the car back to my apartment after the accident. A family member mentioned the possibility of the car being totaled (it looks a little worse in person), but I feel like the insurance company will likely chose to repair it. However, I’m not a car expert whatsoever. It’s a 2022 Toyota Corolla. Any thoughts on whether it will be totaled? submitted by cclloene23 to autorepair [link] [comments] |
2023.05.28 22:43 m3rbles First Car
I'm looking for my first car, and using CarFax, I've narrowed it down to a few different options.
- 2022 Nissan Sentra
- 2020 VW Passat S
- 2020 Nissan Sentra SV
- 2020 VW Jetta
- 2019 Honda Civic LX
- 2021 Nissan Sentra S
- 2020 Nissan Altima S
- 2020 Toyota Corolla LE
Because I'm using CarFax, I can see the miles on the car and any records of accidents or service. Is there anything I should know about any of these cars, and anyone's personal opinions on them are more than welcome and greatly appreciated! I know next to nothing about cars, and any help at all is worth its weight in gold. I have no personal preference towards any of the cars, so whatever one is the best works for me. Thanks in advance!

2023.05.28 22:06 yeet_pestis I have 20k, what should I get?
As the title says: 20k cash, would love to avoid a car payment at all costs.
Moving from the east coast (urban city, walk to work) to a smaller Midwest city. Need a second car because now both my wife and myself will need to drive to work.
We have a 2010 Rav4 with 210k miles but still humming along (hand me down from my folks, well taken care of)… however this makes me want to spend a little more on the car we’re getting now to make sure it’s reliable… otherwise we’re the type of people to just buy a 4 grand Corolla from ‘05.
No kids right now, but that’s on the horizon in the next couple of years.
Have been researching this for months, and honestly getting crushed with analysis paralysis!

2023.05.28 22:05 Dyl8Reddit I’ve been collecting the Bing Word of the Day for an entire year now!
On the day that I posted this, 5-28-2023, it would have been an entire year since I started collecting the daily word that Bing offers every day. For those of you don’t know, if you
search for “Word of the day” on Bing, you will find a unique vocabulary word that is
specific to each day. That’s what I’ve been documenting for the past year.
I started collecting the words back on May 29, 2022. I kept them in a
plain text document that I named word-of-the-day.txt. This document was going to store my words in a specific format, which you will see below. I appended to this document every day in the summer using Windows Notepad, until I eventually moved the document to my Google Drive. This allowed me to hook up multiple automations to it, like a Siri Shortcut that would get the latest word and allow me to append it. Once April of 2023 (or even earlier) came around, I decided to change to only updating it every 6 days since my life was getting a bit busier then. And when I wasn’t automating, I would manually add the daily word as part of my
MicrosoftRewards routine (
sometimes, but only when I had the extra time for it)
Doing this isn’t as easy as going back to add all 365 words right before I published this. That is because there is a
limit to how far back one can go in the daily words — after 7 days a word disappears from the end of the list and is lost forever. This meant that I had to stay on top of the word list, which I did do pretty consistently until I missed on day on June 30th.
But that’s ok, as we all make mistakes. While I was keeping track of the words that Bing offered every day, I learned some interesting things. Discovering a new word every day slowly strengthened my vocabulary to be more eclectic. I used these words in various things like stories, or just to
confuse people that had never heard of the words. And with more words, what started as a hobby to collect the words became a project to archive the WOTD for an entire year.
A lot can happen in a single year. When I started, I didn't even have a Reddit account, and it was late May around the time where everyone gets out of school that I started making the list. Now it’s the end of another school year. I am completely different person.
So with that context and reflection, I would say that it is about time to show you the list that I’ve been collecting:*

2023.05.28 21:36 Arandomglitchtalefan Part two of operation copper! (Other parts linked in replys)
“We’ll, she must be suicidal.” Aron said as he pointed his weapon at the figure.
“How about instead of just shooting everyone we try to take her alive, she looks important.” Cole said.
“Cole’s right.” Gram replied. “In other words, aim for non lethal.”
“Bite me! If she decides to fight she’s gonna get a fight!” Uzi said as she pointed her railgun at the figure.
“Damn right.” Aron said as he smiled.
Somehow even with a ballistic face mask on the Figure looked to roll her 2 red glowing ‘eyes’.
“I guess I’ll just hold our friend here while you guys deal with that.” V said as she also rolled her eyes.
Popping the smoke bomb, it suddenly filled the room before anyone could fire, still everyone had the same reaction of shooting into it. V with her MP5SD, Aron with his AR, Cole with his AA12 and Gram with his MP5K. Gunfire rang out throughout the hallways and casings fell onto the floor but everyone ran out of ammo and reloaded except for V who held her gun facing the ceiling while Uzi held her railgun and scanned the smoke, however strangely nothing was there. Thad meanwhile grabbed a metal pipe from the ground as he backed up behind V.
“Coward.” V said under her breath as she glanced at Thad.
“Hey! I’m not a MD ok?” Thad replied.
Silence lay upon the team as everyone wondered if whoever that figure was was dead, gone, or something else. Unfortunately they were wrong.
Emerging from the smoke the figure seemed to dive through the air and onto Aron clunking him against a wall. Firing her M45 at his chest each of the shots ricocheting off his armor and behind her with only slight dents left, and eventually running out of ammo as the M45’s slide stayed back and each gunshot was replaced by a constant clicking.
“What is it sweetheart? Didn’t bring AP rounds?” Said Aron as he smirked. Everyone else trained their weapons on the figure as she held Aron.
Annoyed, the figure tossed the M45 in the air to catch it by the barrel and pistol whipping Aron’s helmet hitting so hard it knocked the night vision off its mounting onto the floor and dented his helmet with blood staining the wound.
Aron didn’t let himself get hit without a fight as he immediately pulled a knife from his side and tried to stab the figure, however she was faster.
V rolled her eyes and was about to fire on the figure when the MD beneath her saw his chance and got up fast enough to make V unbalanced, he then slammed his cuffs on a nearby pipe hard enough to break them as he turned around and activated his blade arms. V rolled her eyes and did the same as her visor turned into an >< before she started to fight the MD.
Backflipping off Aron and reloading her handgun so fast that the fresh mag went in before the spent one hit the ground the Figure shot the AA12 out of Cole’s hands before he fired and the MP5K out of Gram’s and as each of them saw this they drew knives and attempted to fight the Figure. Holstering the handgun with a stylish spin, she drew a silver kukri that had the unique appearance of the blade looking like it was constantly reforming itself over and over again like it was some kind of anomaly.
“Fascinating….” Gram said as he intensified the grip on his knife.
Wasting no time the two attempted to fight the Figure charging at her from both sides, dodging both of their attacks she grabbed Cole’s arm and spun him around hitting the floor with the floor beneath him cracking it. As this happened Gram attempted to get the figure while she wasn’t looking but she somehow was and elbowed him in the face cracking the helmet’s visor and knocking the Night vision off its mount. Gram however didn’t let up as he used his leg to suddenly kick the figures, making her unstable and slightly loosen her grip on Cole who immediately plunged his knife into the left red eye on her mask.
The figure only staggered backwards as she calmly took out the knife with no blood staining it. “Impressive, but you shouldn’t have done that.” She said,
The figure immediately threw Cole’s knife straight at his gut, spraying blood everywhere as he immediately held it and applied pressure, she then kicked Gram across the hall, slamming into one of the walls making a slight dent as he was knocked unconscious. Aron tried one last time to shoot the figure as he loaded his sidearm, however he was too slow when the figure managed to dodge the first bullet shot and punch Aron’s head into the wall knocking him out like the others. As she looked around to see Uzi aiming her railgun right at her. However Uzi underestimated the figure as she used her powers to try to encase her in some metal. However she was fast and quickly escaped before jumping directly behind her. And as Uzi was about to say BITE ME! The breath coming from her voice box to do so the figure spoke with the same Voicecoder as before. “Did any of these guys ever tell you to not get close to someone with a Melee weapon?” she said letting out a very short maniacal laugh “.... What?” said Uzi But it was too late to recognize her mistake. Reacting quickly the figure put her arm over the railgun aiming it towards the floor, Punching Uzi the the Face with the force to Crack the Visor and splatter Oil onto herself before Elbowing the railgun away from Uzi knocking her back and she stumbled over to the ground. As she looked up she saw the figure aiming her own railgun at her using her elbow to brace it along with shouldering it too.
However V unexpectedly pounced on the figure, knocking her back, the figure looked back to the MD to see him knocked out on the floor with a cracked visor.
“I see you’ve dealt with my friend.” The figure said.
“Your next!” V said with a smile. However before she could do anything the figure expertly flipped them over, causing V to be on the ground and the figure on top.
Before V could do anything else the figure's kukri was at her throat. However then Thad came charging in with the pipe as he screamed in what seemed like a sad attempt at a battle cry.
The figure caught Thad’s pipe before it hit her, she then looked at Thad and said in an annoyed tone. “Civilians….” She then kicked Thad into a nearby wall, making a crack on the wall as Thad slumped down from it, knocked out.
The figure then turned her attention to V and said. “You're lucky you're worth more alive.” She said as she pulled out a pair of what looked to be those MD cuffs and was about to put them on V when suddenly she was knocked off V by a punch.
V looked to her right to see Red standing there shaking off her hand before pulling out her sword.
“Leave. Her. Alone.” Red said.
“About damn time I found you.” The figure said as she got up.
“I’ll deal with her, V, get the others to the medical bay.”
“That’s a stupid idea. I’m staying and fighting with you.” V said in response.
However the figure snapped her fingers, suddenly the MD that jumped into the vents earlier came out now fully regenerated at the figures side.
“Deal with V, I’ll take care of Red.” She said as the MD nodded.
Then the MD charged and tackled V unexpectedly as Red just barely managed to block an attack from the figure with her blade.
Red tried to slice at the figure, however she was faster and dodged out of the way as she went in for her own slice. However it was Red's turn, Red immediately slid to the left and grabbed the figure’s hand holding the knife before allowing the figure.
The figure responded by kicking Red’s legs from under her as she tried to pounce on her. However Red rolled to the side and used her sword to try to slice at the figure, however she barely missed and instead sliced the figure's hand. The figure’s hand bled, however it wasn't normal blood, it was black but not oil. The figure's blood spilled out of her hand before she stopped the bleeding. She looked at her hand and back at Red.
The figure immediately charged at Red however instead of a tackle she threw her kukri at Red, causing Red to grab it midair but leaving her open to the figure then tackling her. She tackled Red into a wall and pinned her to it as she held her kukri to Red’s neck.
“He trained you well. But not good enough, traitor.” The figure said. Just then a bullet shot was heard as the other MD collapsed, injured and holding his side as V put her foot on his core. V then punched the MD on the ground instantly knocking him out.
The figure then said. “I don’t have time for this.” She then picked up Thad’s nearby pipe and threw it at V as she was still reveling in her victory. The pipe hit V and knocked her out immediately.
“Now back to you.” The figure said, turning her head to Red. Red then immediately tried to head but the figure, however she was unsuccessful as the figure used her own momentum and knocked her to the ground. The figure then put her foot on Red’s throat and started to slowly squish it.
“Say goodbye.” The figure said as Red started to have trouble breathing.
Suddenly a voice from down the hall said. “Let her go.”
The figure turned her head to see a man in a white trench coat with a black shirt and pants beneath and a black fedora on his head. Peeking from his hat was what looked like blond hair, he looked relatively skinny.
“I said. Let her go.” He said as he walked closer.
I don’t have time for this.” The figure said now even more annoyed.
The figure got off of Red as she breathed in heavily and held her throat.
The figure ran towards the man as he just stood there with a smile. The figure leaped at the man, however he expertly dodged out of the way causing her to land behind him, she then pulled her kukri out and tried to slash at the man with lightning speed. However he dodged all of them without a problem, all with a smile on his face.
Suddenly he made his first move, grabbing the figure's hand wielding the blade and threw her behind him as he kicked her as hard as he could away from him. She got up instantly and went in for another attack, however she didn’t expect a hard and quick punch by the man directly in the face. This punch was so hard her mask broke off her face. She held her face in what looked like pain. However she kept her right hand blocking her face as she used her left to grab her now broken mask. She then turned around and threw something on the ground that made some type of portal that she immediately leaped through before it dissipated.
The man then went towards Red as she slowly got up with a cough. “Who are you….” Red said out of breath.
V and Thad also got up with a brown as Uzi coughed up some oil, she was dazed as she used her abilities to start regenerating her cracked visor.
“I'm your reinforcements.” The man said as he looked around.
At that moment, Aron, Gram and Cole got up. Cole still held his wound as he staggered up. Aron also got up and took off his helmet as he held his head in pain.
“It looks to me you all need a trip to the medical bay. She kicked your asses.” The man said with a chuckle.
“You didn’t answer my question. Who are you?” Red said, now a little annoyed.
“I’m Dr Alto Clef. That’s at least the version you can pronounce. I'm here with my associate…. If he wasn’t outside.” Clef said.
“Dr Alto Clef…. In the flesh.” Gram said in astonishment.
“Hell ya! I'm a big fan, Clef! I loved that time you killed five reality warpers with an out of date 9mm!” Aron said as his head pain seemed to disappear, or at least he ignored it.
“We’ll i'm glad to see my accomplishments are getting some attention, Shaw owes me five dollars now!” Clef said with a chuckle.
“Wait wait, am I supposed to know who this is?” V said, confused.
“Ya, this is going wayyy too fast for my liking.” Uzi replied her visor now fully healed.
“Ughhhh…. My head….” Thad said as he barely got up holding his head in pain as he tried to force himself to stand up straight. “How can you guys even walk?….”
“Training.” Everyone said in unison.
“Anyway, back to my point! Who are you really?” V said.
“We’ll sweetheart I’m the one and only Dr Clef, hero of the foundation and killer of all things that threaten your very existence.” Clef replied with a wink. V rolled her eyes.
“Wait, weren’t you in a thing with 173 a couple years ago? Why are you suddenly flirting with her?” Aron said, confused.
“He what?!?” Red said now fully wide eyed and surprised. “173!?!??!”
“It’s a long story.” Gram replied with a sigh.
“Ya well it didn’t work out…. Mostly because of this war and the fact that it tried to kill me with everything it had last time I saw it. So now I’m looking for something else to fill that void…. That and the fact that talking to a statue gets boring really fast.” Clef said as he took out a cigarette from his coat, lit it, and smoked it.
“You know doing that will kill you right? It will shorten your lifespan by ten years at least.” Uzi said.
“Not me, I’m fucking immortal.” Clef said casually.
“Your what?” V said, confused.
“I’m immortal. Listen, you don’t make a child with a goddess and not become what is basically a demigod, ok.” Clef said as he smoked another cigarette.
“…. What.” Red said unbelievably confused.
“Long story.” Gram said.
“Well. Anyone want to stop standing here and turn on the generator? If so, follow me.” Clef said as he started to lead the way. “Oh, and you better go to the medical bay.” Clef pointed at Cole who was breathing heavily making sure not to move the knife.
“G-Good point….” Cole said as he walked off.
“Wait, do you even know the way to the generators?” Gram said.
“Of course! He’s Clef!” Aron said excitedly.
“…. Good point.” Gram said with a sigh.
“Fine! I’ll follow him. Get those cuffs on that MD V.” Red said, clearly angry about Clefs presence.
“Thad, you go back, you're not cut out for this.” Uzi said as she patted Thad on the head before she went along with the other’s.
“I figured that out….” Thad said as he wobbled back where he came.
V was grabbing some cuffs and putting them on the MD and cuffing him to a pipe in the wall. However Clef noticed her behind them and said. “Come on, what was your name, V right? The names Clef if you haven’t heard. Ah what am I saying, you’ll be screaming my name later after I’m done.” Clef winked and chuckled to himself.
“If you try to flirt with me again, I’ll personally rip your face off, I’m not interested and never will be, I’m not into humans!” V replied.
“Sheesh, is she always like this?” Clef said.
“You’d be surprised.” Aron said.
N was still running looking for his friends and seemed to stop by the same hallway sixteen times. They all looked the exact same, still carrying his special admirer who seemed to be muttering in her sleep about something, all he could hear in this panic was his name and also something she called a demon.
As N stopped to ponder this, another unfriendly pair of Yellow eyes emerged from the darkness, watching him from the vents as the distant sound of gunfire and the dripping of blood still echoed through the halls, as N kept Pondering and as the MD pounced something he could have never expected what happened next. Fennec lept from N’s hold and onto the MD, her handcuffs shattering as the blue glitched red and a symbol of three lines emerging from an ace of spades glitched red in place of eyes or a MD ><, and as she changed her left armor into her Pincer blades, the MD attempting to parry each strike finding each successful block cracking her blade more and more as she had to step further back without landing a hit on Fennec as she laughed maniacally the laughter causing her mouth to open the standard MD sharp-toothed smile. The kindness and warmth from earlier was gone, replaced by a fury unlike the MD had ever seen even from her own. This was no Angel. This was a demon. And as the MD’s blades finally cracked ‘Fennec’ leapt onto her, knocking the MD to the ground cutting both her lower arms off, splattering oil onto herself as the MD screamed in terror and pain, the demon grabbing at her head with the standard MD Claws, tearing off chunks of her visor and consuming it, oil staining her mouth and then reaching down and starting to tear up her chest. Ripping out some entrails and eating those too, unstable maniacal laughter being interrupted by the consumption of the MD’s insides. Deciding to end it ‘Fennec’ shoved the last tube in her mouth and stabbed the MD in the core and then cut off its head letting the oil from that leak into her mouth and then dropping it, when it stopped leaking oil with a thunk as it hit the ground. As the ace symbol dissipated Fen’s eyes switched back to their normal oval shape and as she looked at herself and the very dead MD on the floor her eyes emptied with fear as she backed up against a wall shaking slightly, starting to hyperventilate as she looked at her oil-stained blades. “L-Let’s never speak of this again….” Fennec said as she looked at N, wiping the oil off her mouth.
“Ok…. I’m very much traumatized!” N said, giving a thumbs up with a forced smile.
With that they continued walking through the halls, suddenly when they turned a corner N and Fennec bumped into the rest of the team, now with Clef.
“HOLY! GET DOWN N!” Yelled Aron as he pointed his gun at Fennec. Gram did the same as the panicked oval eyes filled her face.
“Wanna answer us as to why you're with the MD that tried killing us just a few hours ago!?!?” Uzi said as she pointed her railgun at Fen.
“Wait! S-She’s fine ok? She helped me.” N said as he tried to calm everyone down.
“I highly doubt that.” V said.
“Hey V…. I’ve heard a lot about you!” Fennec said, trying to sound friendly.
“How exactly can we trust her? Give me one reason?” Red said.
“…. She’s not killing us right now? Plus she could’ve killed me while we were alone.” N replied.
Everyone stood still for a few moments.
“We’ll…. Ignoring that…. Oh! Hey guys.” V said. “Have fun?”
“Ughhhhh Yea! Totally!” N said.
“You're obviously hiding something, but I could care less. Anyways, let's get to that generator.” V said.
“What I was thinking.” Red said as she glanced at Clef with suspicion.
“Say, your N right? I’ve heard about you.” Clef said as he looked at N.
“You have?” N asked, confused. “Am I famous!”
“No not at all, I just heard about you from your file. Serial designation N, made by Anderson robotics as a dissemembly drone. Over a hundred confirmed kills. Not a big number compared to V over here.” Clef said with a snicker.
“Oh….” N said now a little sad.
“What about me!” Fennec said. “Am I famous?”
“No, even less than N, I couldn’t even find a file for you.” Clef said.
“Oh….” Fennec said, also sad.
“We should be just a few halls to the containment cells.” Gram said.
“Yea I want this done as soon as possible please.” Uzi said with an eye roll.
“Same.” V said.
“Then stop lollygagging and move!” Red said, now visibly impatient.
As they moved back through the halls, they managed to finally find the now broken doors to the containment cells, they were crooked and looked bent. Inside were two more MD’s, one female and one male. The male one had Jane held against a wall as the female chuckled. The male one had his right arm turned into a blade as he held Jane up with his left, his blade arm was up to her throat. The male MD had the same orange jumpsuits every other MD had and so did the female. The male one had straight black hair while the female had long light brown hair.
Suddenly the female one noticed the team now staring at them. Suddenly the Male grabbed Jane and held her in front of him with his blade to her neck as the female ran behind the male MD and turned her right arm into a submachine gun before pointing it at the team.
“STAY BACK! OR SHE GETS IT!” The male yelled as he held his blade to Jane’s throat. Jane was awake and held her arms to the MD’s blade arm and tried in vain to pull it off her to no avail.
The MTF pulled their weapons and pointed them at the MD’s, Uzi did the same with her railgun as V did the same with her right arm. Clef pulled out his magnum with his right hand and pointed it at the male MD while Red unsheathed her sword and Fen changed her right arm into what seemed to be a modded arm cannon and pointed it at the female one.
“Put it down.” Clef said simply.
“MAKE US!” The female yelled with a chuckle.
“What do you want for her release?” Gram said.
“We want our own freedom!” The male MD yelled.
“I say we just shoot them.” Uzi said as he studied her railgun.
“The chances of hitting Jane are too high, trust me I calculated it.” V replied.
“You sure are fast when it comes to that.” Red said, glancing at V.
“I’m literally a robot, I’ve told you this before.” V replied while Red, looking embarrassed, nodded.
“Let her go tin cans!” Aron yelled.
“MAKE US! FLESH BAG!” The female MD yelled.
Suddenly a bullet shot rang out, however it didn’t come from any of the team, it came from behind the MD’s, the bullet hit the male one directly in the core as he yelled in pain before falling dead. Jane moved quickly to the side. Leaving the female MD in shock.
“I don’t think you're in a position to make demands any more.” Aron said with a smirk.
The female MD then reluctantly turned her arm back to normal and slowly raised her hands as the team moved in closer. Gram immediately placed a pair of the cuffs on the MD as he restrained her tail as well, all with a gun at her core. Jane looked behind her as everyone else did as well. Behind Jane was Lizzy holding a MTF rifle, she immediately put it down as she saw everyone looking at her.
“H-Hey guys.” She said.
“Gram, get that WD and MD under control.” Clef said.
“Didn’t expect to see you here.” Jane said. “I also noticed your new friend.”
“To answer your first question, no one truly does. To answer your second question, she kinda just decided to tag along.” Clef replied.
“You two know each other?” Uzi said.
“Yep, I was stationed at site 19 while Clef was there, mostly to decommission another reality warper.” Jane replied. “Anyway enough about him, where’s my rifle?”
“I have no idea.” N said with a shrug.
“Oh I know! You left in the habitation sector thing!” Fennec said.
“Huh, we’ll anyway get this generator back on and make sure the area is secured.” Jane said.
“I’m getting something near the colony exit, looked like three MD’s, the last ones by the looks of it.” Gram said as he showed his iPad. He had cuffed the female MD to a nearby wall.
“We'll need to go and stop them now are we?” Aron said.
“Yep, follow me I know a shortcut!” Uzi yelled as she ran out with everyone following her.
Meanwhile back at the exit of the colony, a couple MD’s were just starting to get to the exit, they stole a keycard off a dead foundation guard a few halls ago, and now had access to the door.
“Finally! Even if the sun is out I’ll be happy to actually see it again!” One said.
“Don’t get your hopes up, there could still be guards.” Another said.
“We’ll just fly off, no worries.” The third one replied.
“Oh right!” The other said a chuckle as he swiped the card on the door.
However instead of the cold welcoming of the outside, they instead were met by a man wearing a lab coat, he had a red amulet around his neck and smirked as he held a large gun labeled, ‘Micro HID’.
“What, says the dead guys?” The man said.
“What-“ The MD’s said at once before suddenly with a burst of energy from the Micro they were all disintegrated.
Just then the others got to the exit to see a pile of ash next to the man.
“Oh, hey Clef!” The man said as he waved. He had ginger hair, black eyes, white skin, and a small stubble beard that was barely noticeable.
“Dr Elias Shaw, what are you doing here?” Jane said.
“Ahh nothing! I was sent here for the same reason as Clef!” Shaw said.
“Wait wait wait, who are you?” Uzi said.
“Ya I’m confused.” N replied.
“I’ve lost the capacity to be confused.” V said.
“Same here.” Red said.
“Oh! I haven’t introduced myself! Sorry. I’m Dr Elias Shaw! At least that’s what my new name is! We don’t talk about my old name….” Shaw said.
“What was your old name?” Uzi asked.
“Dr Bri-“ Clef started before Shaw shushed him.
“Nope! I do not want to even mention that name!” Shaw said.
“Anyway…. All you need to know is that I’m immortal with this amulet, bla bla bla. Let’s get to working now!” Shaw said as Clef smirked.
“Wait what.” Uzi said.
“Best not to question it.” Aron replied. “That’s the best way to deal with Shaw.”

2023.05.28 20:58 SojournerSpeaker Overheard in New York
1/18/2121 (Humunity Series, Part 15) On Saturday morning I went about my usual weekend ritual: got up, walked the eight steps to the kitchen and turned on the espresso machine, made a flat white that was seldom a flat white because my mind wandered when I steamed milk—which often didn’t swirl as fast as I wanted—into somewhere between cappuccino and latte foam, and sat down at my adjustable standing desk that I’d raised only three or four times in three years. I turned on my home screen. “Open GTIC docs”. I clicked on my work in progress, Idroids Dream Of Sleep, scrolled down, and read the last page I’d written on Sunday. “Open River, search for citrus juicers”. I scrolled down and saw a promo video for a juicer with an inbuilt strainer that was less than half price—only eighty-seven sats. “Buy with Hyatt credit”. Purchase confirmed. Expect delivery by 4:00 pm tomorrow. I swiped back to my GTIC doc. “Make this tale live for us in all its many bearings, oh muse,” I said. “Call from Braga,” said my split scroll. “Answer”. “Hey Jake, my dogs are missing you. Do you want to come over later and stay the weekend? I’m making Chilean sea bass for work colleagues so I can make for us too, and we can go to that breakfast place you like,” said Braga. She has a nasal voice. “Hey, I’d love to, but I already said I’d meet up with my friend Richard later so I won’t make it over to Bay Ridge this weekend, sorry”. I wasn’t sorry. After she hung up, I looked back at the writing on my screen and shook my head. “Fuck”. I got up and walked over to the kitchen, took the bag of matcha out the fridge and turned the coffee machine on again, spooned a teaspoon of matcha, whisked, poured, steamed some oat milk, and poured a white heart into a green froth. I sat back down at the desk and looked at the screen again and began to type: First Leon saw the bus stop, and then he saw the hare. I wrote about three hundred words in fits and starts, between going to the restroom, checking my messages, and dictating a shopping list—artichokes included—onto another GTIC doc. I couldn’t sit still or concentrate on the screen for more than five seconds at a time, so I decided to head for Sullivan Street Bakery on Ninth Avenue. ***** I like to sit at the corner table at Sullivan Street Bakery, next to a downlit alcove and it encouraged me that ‘my’ table was free—sometimes it was, sometimes it wasn’t, but a little more often than not it was, which continued to surprise me given how busy the bakery got. I said hello to a server I’d only seen there a few times—the other girl sometimes gave me free stirato sandwiches and pain-au-chocolats at closing time, not because I was poor, but because she liked me and didn’t want the food to go to waste—and ordered a latte (they didn’t serve flat whites here) and a piece of olive oil cake. I sat nestled in the corner observing the rest of the room: some familiar regulars—not that I knew their names—people I might say hello to, or at least smile or nod. Two men sat at the table next to me worked at one of the art galleries nearby. About a quarter of the clientele here were intellectuals, writers, artists. Another quarter were pseudo-intellectual, another quarter were tourists, and the final quarter were, well, anyone’s guess. I like to ease myself into writing by eavesdropping a little: “What do you think of the story that Reps are using AI to write their stories these days? I find that ironic,” said a white-haired woman a couple of tables to my left. “My sister’s niece had sperm stored in that facility and this has ruined her family plans. I couldn’t get a slot with my therapist today. Since the attack her schedule is full,” said the squinting dark-haired woman she was with. Younger female voices pulled my attention in front of me and to the left: “So I got these shoes on a discount”. “O-M-I, I love. They’re so meth” “They’re restock right?” “D-O-A”.

2023.05.28 20:28 kupanatwojadupa How did you begin your van life?
| Just bought this old school 1979 Toyota Hiace with a rebuilt engine which I plan to turn into my living space for a while and drive it back up to the sunshine state, my natural habitat where it is warmmm!! 😍☀️🏝️ Does anyone have experience with older models? I’ve noticed an oil/gas type smell while driving which I know is common in any vans as I’ve smelled it while driving delivery vans in the past but previously I was driving a small car without any smell, is there a way to mask it especially if you’re living inside? It feels unhealthy to inhale. Do you need to take caution of anything if using it to drive long distances, or need to store anything for the van that may be needed along the way? Is it scary to sleep in the van at night in the outdoors, any security locking to add or measures to take when choosing sleeping locations? Easy to keep warm at night? Are showering, cooking, laundry and all those other basic necessities difficult to do? How about storing food, is it easy to use a small fridge? I’m in Australia and am 30F with my fiancé 30M & will be doing this together. Rent is increasing and it’s been very hard to find a new place, so financially this would be a great option and also a nice adventure that I’ve been longing for. Every time I’ve driven across the country it’s been in a small car, staying in motels or just resting in the car which was really uncomfortable. Any advice on gradually transforming the van in the most economical way possible would be so appreciated. I want to make the interior nice, I’ve seen people install flooring with glossy wood-type finishes. I would love to have a bed inside and some room for clothes and things. Maybe a little desk for my laptop and mirror to get ready with daily, definitely charging ports, heating and lighting which I’ve heard can be achieved very effectively through solar panels. There’s a water pump that connects from the bottom which gives you the option to put in a whole sink in etc, but if parks and free camp sites mostly have those things I probably wouldn’t bother doing that stuff & leave space for the rest. If anyone familiar with any of this could share their experiences plus costs and things, that would be amazing!! 😌🩵 submitted by kupanatwojadupa to VanLife [link] [comments] |

From the urban sprawl of Houston to the riverways of Virginia, air pollution from industrial plants is elevating the cancer risk of an estimated quarter of a million Americans to a level the federal government considers unacceptable.
Some of these hot spots of toxic air are infamous. An 85-mile stretch of the Mississippi River in Louisiana that’s thronged with oil refineries and chemical plants has earned the nickname Cancer Alley. Many other such areas remain unknown, even to residents breathing in the contaminated air.
Until now.
ProPublica undertook an analysis that has never been done before. Using advanced data processing software and a modeling tool developed by the Environmental Protection Agency, we
mapped the spread of cancer-causing chemicals from thousands of sources of hazardous air pollution across the country between 2014 and 2018. The result is an unparalleled view of how toxic air blooms around industrial facilities and spreads into nearby neighborhoods.
📷
The Most Detailed Map of Cancer-Causing Industrial Air Pollution in the U.S. At the map’s intimate scale, it’s possible to see up close how a massive chemical plant near a high school in Port Neches, Texas, laces the air with benzene, an aromatic gas that can
cause leukemia. Or how a manufacturing facility in New Castle, Delaware, for years blanketed a day care playground with ethylene oxide, a
highly toxic chemical that can lead to lymphoma and breast cancer. Our analysis found that ethylene oxide is the biggest contributor to excess industrial cancer risk from air pollutants nationwide. Corporations across the United States, but especially in Texas and Louisiana, manufacture the colorless, odorless gas, which lingers in the air for months and is highly mutagenic, meaning it can alter DNA.
In all, ProPublica identified more than a thousand hot spots of cancer-causing air. They are not equally distributed across the country. A quarter of the 20 hot spots with the highest levels of excess risk are in Texas, and almost all of them are in Southern states known for having weaker environmental regulations. Census tracts where the majority of residents are people of color experience about 40% more cancer-causing industrial air pollution on average than tracts where the residents are mostly white. In predominantly Black census tracts, the estimated cancer risk from toxic air pollution is more than double that of majority-white tracts.
After reviewing ProPublica’s map, Wayne Davis, an environmental scientist formerly with the EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, said, “The public is going to learn that EPA allows a hell of a lot of pollution to occur that the public does not think is occurring.”
Our analysis comes at a critical juncture for the fate of America’s air. After decades of improvement, air quality has, by some metrics,
begun to decline. In the last four years, the Trump administration rolled back more than
a hundred environmental protections, including two dozen air pollution and emissions policies.
The EPA says it “strives to
protect the greatest number of people possible” from an excess cancer risk worse than 1 in a million. That risk level means that if a million people in an area are continuously exposed to toxic air pollutants over a presumed lifetime of 70 years, there would likely be at least one case of cancer on top of those from other risks people already face. According to ProPublica’s analysis, 74 million Americans — more than a fifth of the population — are being exposed to estimated levels of risk higher than this.
EPA policy sets the upper limit of acceptable excess cancer risk at 1 in 10,000 — 100 times more than the EPA’s more aspirational goal and a level of exposure that numerous experts told ProPublica is too high. ProPublica found that an estimated 256,000 people are being exposed to risks beyond this threshold and that an estimated 43,000 people are being subjected to at least triple this level of risk. Still, the EPA sees crossing its risk threshold as more of a warning sign than a mandate for action: The law doesn’t require the agency to penalize polluters that, alone or in combination, raise the cancer risk in an area above the acceptable level.
In response to ProPublica’s findings, Joe Goffman, acting assistant administrator for the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, said in an emailed statement, “Toxic air emissions from industrial facilities are a problem that must be addressed.” Under President Joe Biden’s administration, “the EPA has reinvigorated its commitment to protect public health from toxic air emissions from industrial facilities — especially in communities that have already suffered disproportionately from air pollution and other environmental burdens.”
ProPublica’s reporting exposes flaws with EPA’s implementation of the Clean Air Act, a landmark law that dramatically reduced air pollution across America but provided less protection to those who live closest to industrial polluters.
The 1970 law resulted in outdoor air quality standards for a handful of widespread “criteria” pollutants, including sulfur dioxide and particulate matter, which could be traced to exhaust pipes and smokestacks all over the country and were proven to aggravate asthma and lead to early deaths. But 187 other dangerous chemicals, now known as hazardous air pollutants or air toxics, never got this level of attention. At the time, the science demonstrating the harms of these compounds, which primarily impact people in neighborhoods that border industrial facilities — so-called fence line communities — was still in its early stages. The EPA did not receive enough funding to set the same strict limits, and industry lobbying weakened the agency’s emerging regulations.
In 1990, Congress settled on a different approach to regulating air toxics. Since then, the EPA has made companies
install equipment to reduce their pollution and studied the remaining emissions to see if they pose an unacceptable health risk.
The way the agency assesses this risk vastly underestimates residents’ exposure, according to our analysis. Instead of looking at how cancer risk adds up when polluters are clustered together in a neighborhood, the EPA examines certain types of facilities and equipment in isolation. When the agency studies refineries, for example, it ignores a community’s exposure to pollution from nearby metal foundries or shipyards.
Matthew Tejada, director of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice, told ProPublica that tackling hot spots of toxic air will require “working back through 50 years of environmental regulation in the United States, and unpacking and untying a whole series of knots.”
Top Polluters The cancer-causing air emissions from these five corporations cover more populated square miles than the emissions from any other companies, according to our analysis.
- The Dow Chemical Company
- Huntsman Corp.
- Eastman Chemical Co.
- BASF
- LyondellBasell Industries
Most of these companies did not comment; Eastman said, “Not all risk is due to industrial activity, however, we continue to do our part to reduce risk and emissions to ensure the safety of our local community.” “The environmental regulatory system wasn’t set up to deal with these things,” he said. “All of the parts of the system have to be re-thought to address hot spots or places where we know there’s a disproportionate burden.”
The Clean Air Act rarely requires industry or the EPA to monitor for air toxics, leaving residents near these plants chronically uninformed about what they’re breathing in. And when companies report their emissions to the EPA, they’re allowed to estimate them using
flawed formulas and monitoring methods.
“These fence line communities are sacrifice zones,” said Jane Williams, executive director of California Communities Against Toxics. “Before there was climate denial, there was cancer denial. We release millions of pounds of carcinogens into our air, water and food and act mystified when people start getting sick.”
....

---
The cancer risks from industrial pollution can be compounded by factors like age, diet, genetic predisposition and exposure to radiation; the knock-on effect of inhaling toxic air for decades might, for example, mean the difference between merely having a family history of breast cancer and actually developing the disease yourself. While the cancer and asthma rates in Houston’s Harris County are comparable with those in the rest of the state, Texas officials have identified cancer clusters in several of the city’s neighborhoods.
Large swaths of the Greater Houston area make up the third-biggest hot spot of cancer-causing air in the country, according to our analysis, after Louisiana’s Cancer Alley and an area around Port Arthur, Texas, which is on the Louisiana border. For many homes closest to the fence lines of petrochemical plants in cities like La Porte and Port Neches, Texas, the estimated excess risk of cancer ranges from three to six times the level that the EPA considers acceptable.
But because of the way that the EPA underestimates risk, the true dangers of living in a toxic hot spot are often invisible to regulators and residents.
The agency breaks things down into the smallest possible categories “to avoid addressing what we call cumulative risk,” said John Walke, an attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council who formerly worked as an EPA lawyer advising the Office of Air and Radiation. “But our bodies do not parse out air pollution according to rule labels or industrial equipment or industrial source categories.” The cancer risk from each facility or type of equipment may be at levels the agency considers “acceptable,” but taken together, the potential harms can be substantial.
The EPA initially sent ProPublica a statement saying that it “ensures that risks from individual source categories are acceptable and that the standards provide an ample margin of safety to protect public health.”
In another statement sent after an interview, the agency added, “We understand that communities often confront multiple sources of toxic air pollution and face cumulative risks greater than the risk from a single source.” The EPA added that it was working both to better harness the science on cumulative risks and “to better understand risks for communities who are overburdened by numerous sources of multiple pollutants.”
Madison can’t help but notice that when her family travels, K’ryah’s asthma improves. “The first chance I get, I’m moving far away from Texas and never looking back,” she said. “I love being outside. I love seeing the stars. I don’t want to feel like someone is pumping gas onto our front porch.”
The locations of the
hot spots identified by ProPublica are anything but random. Industrial giants tend to favor areas that confer strategic advantages: On the Gulf Coast, for instance, oil rigs abound, so it’s more convenient to build refineries along the shoreline. Corporations also favor places where land is cheap and regulations are few.
Under federal law, the EPA delegates the majority of its enforcement powers to state and local authorities, which means that the environmental protections afforded to Americans vary widely between states. Texas, which is home to some of the largest hot spots in the nation, has
notoriously lax regulations.
Between 2008 and 2018, lawmakers cut funding for state pollution-control programs by 35% while boosting the state’s overall budget by 41%, according to
a report by the Environmental Integrity Project, an advocacy group founded by former EPA staffers. A
Texas Tribune story from 2017 found that during the prior year, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality had levied fines in fewer than 1% of the cases in which polluters exceeded emission limits. Even when
penalties are issued, many polluters see these fines as part of the cost of doing business, said Craig Johnston, a former lawyer at the EPA and a professor of environmental law at Lewis and Clark Law School.
Gary Rasp, a TCEQ spokesperson, told ProPublica that the agency “has taken actions to monitor, mitigate, and improve the air quality in fence line communities.” The agency runs dozens of stationary air toxics monitors across the state, he added, and “by continuously evaluating air monitoring data, which is more accurate than modeling, TCEQ can identify issues.” The agency also inspects industrial facilities and “has an active enforcement program, referring particularly egregious cases to the Texas Office of the Attorney General.”
That the people living inside these hot spots are disproportionately Black is not a coincidence. Our findings build on
decades of evidence demonstrating that pollution is segregated: People of color are exposed to far greater levels of air pollution than whites — a pattern that persists across income levels. These disparities are rooted in
racist real estate practices like redlining and the designation of
low-income neighborhoods and communities of color as mixed residential-industrial zones. In cities like Houston, for example, all-white zoning boards
targeted Black neighborhoods for the siting of noxious facilities, like landfills, incinerators and garbage dumps. Robert Bullard, a professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University, has
called the practice “PIBBY” or “Place In Blacks’ Back Yard” — a spin on the acronym “NIMBY” (“Not In My Back Yard”).
📷
How We Created the Most Detailed Map Ever of Cancer-Causing Industrial Air Pollution Many of the neighborhoods that border chemical plants are low-income and lack the same resources, access to health care and political capital that wealthier neighborhoods can bring to
fights against intrusive commercial activities. In places like Baytown, working-class people depend on the very companies that sicken them to earn a living. Over the years, the shadow of industry can permanently impair not just a neighborhood’s health but also its economic prospects and property values, fueling a cycle of disinvestment. “Industries rely on having these sinks — these sacrifice zones — for polluting,” said Ana Baptista, an environmental policy professor at The New School. “That political calculus has kept in place a regulatory system that allows for the continued concentration of industry. We sacrifice these low-income, African American, Indigenous communities for the economic benefit of the region or state or country.”
Tejada, the EPA’s director of environmental justice, said that the Biden administration and the EPA are focused on confronting these disparities. “These places didn’t happen by accident. The disproportionality of the impacts that they face, the generations of disinvestment and lack of access are not coincidences. These places were created. And it is the responsibility of everyone, including the government — chiefly the government — to do something about it.”
The federal government has long had the information it would need to take on these hot spots. The EPA collects emissions data from more than 20,000 industrial facilities across the country and has even developed its own state-of-the-art tool — the Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators model — to estimate the impact of toxic emissions on human health. The model, known as RSEI, was designed to help regulators and lawmakers pinpoint where to target further air-monitoring efforts, data-quality inspections or, if necessary, enforcement actions. Researchers and journalists have used this model for
various investigations over the years, including
this one.
And yet the agency’s own use of its powerful modeling tool has been limited. There’s been a lack of funding for and a dearth of interest in RSEI’s more ambitious applications, according to several former and current EPA employees. Wayne Davis, the former EPA scientist, managed the RSEI program under the Trump administration. He said that some of his supervisors were hesitant about publishing information that would directly implicate a facility. “They always told us, ‘Don’t make a big deal of it, don’t market it, and hopefully you’ll continue to get funding next year.’ They didn’t want to make anything public that would raise questions about why the EPA hadn’t done anything to regulate that facility.”
Nicolaas Bouwes, a former senior analyst at the EPA and a chief architect of the RSEI model, recalled the occasional battle to get colleagues to accept the screening tool, let alone share its findings with the public. “There’s often been pushback from having this rich data sheet too readily available because it could make headlines,” he said. “What I find annoying is that the EPA has the same information at their disposal and they don’t use it. If ProPublica can do this, so can the EPA.”
In its statement, the EPA said that it plans to improve its approach for sharing air toxics data faster and more regularly with the public. “EPA has not published calculated cancer risks using RSEI modeled results,” it continued. “RSEI results are not designed as a substitute for more comprehensive, inclusive, or site specific risk assessments,” but as a potential starting point that should only be used “to identify situations of potential concern that may warrant further investigation.”
Indeed,
our map works as a screening tool, not as a site-specific risk assessment. It cannot be used to tie individual cancer cases to emissions from specific industrial facilities, but it can be used to diagnose what the EPA calls “situations of potential concern.”
Our analysis arrives as America faces new threats to its air quality. The downstream effects of climate change, like warmer temperatures and massive wildfires, have created more smoke and smog. The Trump administration diluted, scuttled or reversed dozens of air pollution protections — actions
estimated to lead to thousands of additional premature deaths. In 2018, then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt created a massive air toxics loophole when he rolled back a key provision of the Clean Air Act, known as “Once In, Always In,” allowing thousands of large polluters to relax their use of pollution-controlling equipment.
Biden has yet to close this loophole, but he has signaled plans to alleviate the disproportionate impacts borne by the people who live in these hot spots. Within his first few days in office, he established two White House councils to address environmental injustice. And in March, Congress confirmed his appointment of EPA administrator Michael Regan, who has directed the agency to strengthen its enforcement of violations “in communities overburdened by pollution.”
https://www.propublica.org/article/toxmap-poison-in-the-air Over the years, Sullivan Ramirez herself has struggled with nerve degeneration and scleroderma, a rare condition that involves the tightening of the skin and connective tissues. While it can be difficult to link specific cases of disease to pollution exposure, the evidence in Mossville has accumulated: In a 1998 health survey conducted by the University of Texas, 84% of Mossville residents reported having headaches, dizziness, tremors and seizures. An EPA study from the same year found that
the average level of dioxins in the blood of Mossville residents was dangerously high — triple that of the general U.S. population. Even small amounts of dioxin, one of the most poisonous chemicals released by facilities, can cause developmental problems, damage the immune system and lead to cancer. A 2007 report found that the types of dioxin compounds in the blood of Mossville residents matched those emitted by local industrial facilities.
In an emailed statement, Sasol noted that its property buyout stemmed from direct requests from Mossville residents and that the company offered owners more than the appraised value of their homes. “Sasol and its predecessor have produced or handled chemicals at our Lake Charles complex for more than 60 years. We understand the science and have controls in place to ensure our operations are safe, protective of the environment, compliant with regulations and sustainable over the long term,” wrote Sarah Hughes, a spokesperson for Sasol. “Sasol is proud of our engagement with our neighbors in Mossville and the positive impact it has had on many of its residents.”
📷
Can Air Pollution Cause Cancer? What You Need to Know About the Risks. Sullivan Ramirez is wary of too much talk. She knows that the new administration has promised something more for communities like hers, but she doesn’t want to get her hopes up. The presentations from captains of industry, the listening sessions with earnest bureaucrats, the proposals from slick attorneys, the promises tossed off by politicians — over the years, she’s heard it all.
The people of Mossville are right to be skeptical, the EPA’s Tejada acknowledged. “I would be skeptical if I was from Mossville,” he added. “They should be skeptical until we actually show up and do the things that they’ve been asking us to do for a long time. But there’s now a level of commitment to actually tangling with these issues in a really serious, substantive way.”
After years of activism in Mossville, Sullivan Ramirez moved to Lake Charles, just a short drive away. But she worries the industrial sprawl will one day overtake her new home. To Sullivan Ramirez, Mossville is “the key” — a warning of what the future holds for America’s other hot spots if business continues as usual.
“This is the 21st century,” she said. “The act of polluting our lands and robbing our communities — when will enough be enough?”

2023.05.28 18:41 Wallcorners_wall_art HOW HIGH SHOULD I HANG WALL ART ON THE LIVING ROOM WALL?
| Wall Art – When determining how high to hang wall art, consider a few key guidelines. Generally, the center of the artwork should be positioned at eye level, which is typically around 57 to 60 inches from the floor. https://wallcorners.com/landscape-wall-art-painting-thomas-style-canvas-printing-art-for-bed-room-paintings-art-on-canvas-wholesale-canvas-art/ The correct height to hang wall art is eye level.
